ctober ushers in the Fall season with crisp cool temperatures and a beautiful landscape showcasing seasonal colors of autumn. Our travel feature on Fall Foliage Getaways highlights spectacular sightseeing and the abundance of outdoor activities in areas ranging from New York’s Hudson Valley to The Adirondacks and Finger Lakes to New England’s White Mountains and Berkshires with recommendations on places to stay. Fall is the perfect time for a relaxing day trip or staycation to beat the hustle and bustle in the city. Hit the road and enjoy! New York City plays host to New York Comic Con at the Javits Center from October 3rd through 6th with crowds in excess of 100,000 people dressed up as their favorite superheroes and villains looking for 15 minutes of fame and to possibly rub elbows with some cool celebrities, well-known writers, and talented producers. This year’s event will feature the likes of Paul Rudd, Adam Savage, and many famous celebs. You may even bump into one of the Impractical Jokers. Let them know, I said, “hi.” The Big Apple Circus comes to town for its 42nd season with an October 12th opening at Lincoln Center with performances continuing through February 2nd. Come witness the most spectacular one ring show under the “Big Tent” with amazing costumes and fabulous décor. Make sure to get cotton candy, popcorn, and if you have room, try one of the famous candied apples. Let’s not forget that Halloween is right around the corner with the 46th annual Village Halloween Parade taking place on October 31st at 7 p.m. sharp. The parade creeps along the spooktacular 6th Avenue from Spring to 16th Streets. In the true spirit of the holiday, be sure to come dressed in your most scary-looking zombie, ghost, or goblin attire. Arrive as a headless horseman or even a “Wicked” witch. Mingle with the “walking dead” in this one-of-a-kind horrific event. Lastly, a big thank you to all New Yorkers who came out last month in support of Rock and Rawhide’s Adoptapalooza event in Union Square and sponsors including The Petco Foundation, Z100 New York, and Bobs for Dogs from Skechers. They as well as the animal rescue centers made this year’s event a great success. A special mention to my friends Sean-Patrick Hillman and Kylie Edmond. Without their efforts, none of this would have been possible. It was so encouraging and a joy to see people show such love for their pets—and those newly adopted family members, too! I look forward to hearing from you with comments, suggestions, and what you would like to see on the pages of New York Lifestyles and Pet Lifestyles magazines. See you next month...

MARILYN HOFFMAN THE $100 MILLION REALTOR By AP Connolly

arilyn Hoffman’s expertise in selling extraordinary estates and ranches attracts a clientele that reads more like a Who’s Who of Business, Sports, Entertainment, and the Social Register. Golfer Lee Trevino, a world-famous fashion designer, a Saudi Prince, sports legend Deion Sanders, a billionaire Texas oilman, Horatio Alger member Carl Westcott, cosmetics queen Mary Kay, Merv Griffin, Indy 500 winner Andy Granatelli, the CEO of the country’s largest corporation, Alan Paulson the CEO of Gulfstream, a Trump cabinet member, and a major sports team owner have all been her clients.

Marilyn sold a 35,000 square foot waterfront estate for the full price of $20,000,000 in only 24 days. This home is believed to be the most significant waterfront estate sold in the country. This estate was previously listed with another international broker and did not sell. The remarkable thing is that she sold this home sight unseen to a famous California family. Marilyn was also the first broker to list a $100,000,000 Texas estate. Her famous sales include Kentucky’s Summer Wind Farm, with a 25,000 square foot mansion sold to James Thornton, and one of the largest estates in Texas which was sold to the new owners of the Texas Rangers. Her sale of a $9,995,000 Penthouse in Dallas was the most expensive ever sold in Dallas. She sold this home to the most famous Texas oilman in only 79 days after it had been listed with other brokers for 807 days. Marilyn also sold a $13,500,000 estate to the owners of a Scottish castle after she met them at the Keeneland sales where they were buying Thoroughbreds.

A WORLD OF EVENTS

Marilyn does the most unique marketing in the world, with real estate exhibits at such prestigious events as the Cavallino Classic Yacht Hop in Palm Beach, the Cattle Barons Galas, the Bal de la Mer in Monte Carlo, the Yacht Rendezvous at Fisher Island, the Saddlebred World Championship Show, the Military Ball in New York, the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction, the Breeder’s World Cup, the Rolex Three Day Event, the Winter Equestrian Festival, and at a charity gala at Mar a Lago, Donald Trump’s Palm Beach estate. Marilyn donates champion Arabian horses to many charity auctions, such as the Watermill Gala in Southampton, where her donation sold for $35,000 to a European princess. She has also donated over $200,000 to the Cattle Barons Ball, benefiting the American Cancer Society, and has topped the charity auctions many times. Not too many brokers can claim they have sold the largest home in multiple states, but Marilyn certainly holds the record. She has sold one of the most famous Texas ranches, the Double Diamond Ranch in Boerne, with 2,000 acres, 20 homes, and an exotic game preserve. She sold a 20,000 square foot home in Oklahoma for Cowboy Bill Watts, the world champion wrestler, and a 28,000 square foot Tulsa estate.

Marilyn Hoffman ©Billy Campbell

This energetic realtor also sold the Fox Ranch in Colorado, home of a 150,000 square foot log home, reported to be the largest private residence in the country. Her most recent sale was a property listed at $11,000,000 which she sold to the CEO of the most famous Japanese corporation for $10,875,000. OCTOBER 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 13

FOUR F RANCH

A WORLD CLASS TEXAS ESTATE

4FRanch.com 16 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

This is an opportunity to buy your Garden of Eden. Custom designed and built; this 6,900 square foot estate rests on 240 acres of pristine land with a lake and artesian well. “The owner of this one-of-a-kind estate ranch told me that when he was a youth, he would have to go out to a spring and haul water into the house. It left an indelible impression on him, and he vowed that a source of freshwater would be an essential part of his future home,” said Marilyn. “When this great ranch property amid piney woods became available, the first thing that got his attention was the artesian well flowing perpetually through the property!” The artesian well became the source of freshwater when the owners designed and constructed this four-bedroom and 3.5 bath two-story structure. An equestrian stable with eight stalls was added, and an existing cabin on the property was renovated as a caretaker’s home. The pictures tell the story of elegance and style put together by one of the country’s foremost interior designers for her own personal estate— comfortable yet posh abode. The entry foyer is grand, with the stairway going to the upstairs level guest rooms and study. The main level encompasses the two-level Great Room with floor to ceiling windows and a fireplace, Master Bedroom, Library, Game Room, and a Kitchen with every amenity and high-end appliances and granite countertops for the gourmet chef. Four fireplaces inside and one outside add the warm ambiance. Imagine a location just one hour from Dallas in the lush, green rolling hills of East Texas. LIFE & STYLE EDITOR’S PICKS FOR A MONTH OF GHOULISH GLEE By Griffin Miller

e’re all grownups here, right? Not necessarily adults, a less congenial word connoting sensible eating, taxes, career choices, real estate, and (occasionally) lawsuits. Grownups, on the other hand, retain a passion for video games, pranking, pizza as a food group and forever—and always—Halloween. What’s not to love about a holiday steeped in candy, costumes, and the macabre? Even if your nights of trick-or-treating are over, tossing back a mug of cider while watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show never stops being devilishly satisfying. Nor do my favorite October indulgences—fiendishly so. BLITHE SPIRITS

GOTH ON GLASS

From Oscar Wilde’s Picture of Dorian Gray to Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, a unique collection of Gothic masterworks have chilled their way onto lowball glasses courtesy of Well Told Design, a company known for bar and glassware etched with geography, history, and constellations. Veering into the supernatural, Well Told’s literary line showcases iconic passages, illustrations, cover art and author signatures. Imagine toasting Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera in a glass bearing a crucial quote and familiar red rose, or watching ice melt under a sinister Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde beaker. Me? I’ll stick to a simple blood-tinged scotch served by Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Info: welltolddesign.com.

Speaking of Halloween-savvy scotch, I turn your attention to a singular new premium blend from Dewar’s called Caribbean Smooth. Double-aged and finished in rum casks, this eight year-old scotch has a “flavor profile” that meshes with the season: apple, caramel and dark brown sugar. Plus a bonus of tropical fruit undertones. In terms of overall taste, I was not disappointed. And yes, it’s as smooth as its hype… maybe more so. I prefer my scotch on the rocks, but Caribbean Smooth is also a good choice for cocktails. To quote Jack Sparrow, “Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate.” Indeed, sometimes it’s made to be sipped. As to pairing it with Halloween candy, I matched it with Mounds and Almond Joy… not bad. NOIR IS THE NEW BLACK

Sexy and be-witching, it’s ostensibly sleepwear, but not necessarily. In slinky onyx with spaghetti straps morphing into a unexpected back design and a fashionista dip of the hem, JJwinks Room Service Maxi Nightgown could easily be a wardrobe staple for Mistress of the Night Elvira or Morticia Addams. Even me. With a non-confining, Light Hug™ bra alternative for home and slumber, the super-soft ribbed fabric is so versatile and comfy it doubles as a dress for travel, work, errands or, with a widow’s veil, steampunk jacket and lace up booties, the ultimate All Hallows Eve statement look. It comes in several colors including a striking red (aka Cranberry). Femme and fatale. Info: JJwinks.com. 26 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

MINAMALIST WITH A TWIST

Halloween soiree on your calendar? How about a wedding? An after-hour event? Brunch? Looking for cutting edge chic that packs flat and scores compliments? Then check out Nexus Mini Bag from Mary Smallwood Designs. The dimensions run 10” x 12” once you ace the elegant twist that lets you slip it on and bob for apples, conduct a séance, gesture wildly, all without dropping a beat. The luxe, pliable leather in myriad colors—including four metallic (the rose gold is to die for) – defies the bag’s practicality. Testing capacity, I popped in my phone, hand sanitizer, foldable brush, hanky, ID, credit card, cash, and sunglasses. A zippered pocket went on hold lip-gloss, mascara, compact and pen. Info: marysmallwood.com.

BOOTING UP

When it comes to picking favorites, I can’t help but circle back to things that make my life easier, cushy and, whenever possible, aesthetically pleasing. Arcopedico footwear checks off all three boxes, which explains why the company’s boots, shoes and sandals make the list on a regular basis, tantalizing me with new looks and styles. With cool weather setting in, I have turned my attention to their high boots—not thigh highs, but ones that touch the knee and rock minis, midis and jeans. (FYI: they’re also standard issue for Shakespearean breeches roles.) My latest discovery in this category is The Liana vegan boot which is—get this—machine washable. So comfortable I wear them early morn through post-theatre nights without any foot grief whatsoever. Info: arcopedicousa.com.

PERIPHERAL VISION

A place for everything and everything in its place. Whoever came up with that tidbit of optimism hasn’t been searching for my other shoe, favorite pen and garlic press— or rummaging at the bottom of my massive handbag (probably for all of the above). And while I’ve taken advantage of drawer dividers, bins and special hangers to address home chaos, my bag remains an unbalanced balancing act with makeup and wallet under control, but charger, ear buds, and cords running amok. That is until Moral Code stepped up my game with its Roll-up Tech Kit in handcrafted leather. Three perfect pockets let me deposit my accessories with smug panache before curling the soft leather into a secure, easy-to-grab roll. Info: moralcode.com.

PLEASE TEES ME

They may not be as sweet or sparkly as gowns from the Princess Boutique, or as colorful as costumes inspired by Toy Story, but they are certainly the most iconic wearables to come out of Disney— for parents, grandparents, vintage aficionados, and seasoned Mickey devotees—since Mouseketeer ears. With an eye on Walt’s legacy, the historian Imagineers have unearthed a treasure trove of archival artwork and stories and created the Disney Backstage Collection, a one-of-a-kind monthly subscription box service. Included in each retro keepsake canister are a limited-release t-shirt, pin, story card and mystery storytelling detail (think Easter Eggs). Collectible Alert: once the window for each exclusive release is shut, the canister and its contents will be retired. Info: shopdisney.com.

DREAM WEAVER

Back when I was a starving writer—and by starving I mean Ramen noodles and coffee—I had a boss who informed me she would only sleep on sheets that cost $1,500. Each. I was not amused… or impressed. Even less so today, now that my sleep scenario is spent wrapped in the soothing Supima cotton of Gryphon sheets. A far cry from a $1,500 (although I don’t recommend cutting into them for ghost costumes), Gryphon bedding is majorly soft to begin with and becomes softer with each wash. After your first indulgent Gryphon-ized night, you wake up spoiled with only the faintest memories of your pedestrian past on lesser sheets. And should you find one of Gryphon’s three distinctive fabrics effective at keeping nightmares at bay, you’re officially ready for whatever Halloween 2019 has in store. Info:gryphonhome.com. •

STYLE

MARLA WYNNE

CASUAL ELEGANCE FOR THE MODERN WOMAN By Bailey Beckett

mart. Brassy. Stylish. There are many adjectives to ascribe Marla Wynne, but the most telling is in her fashions. The New York designer has built an empire on dressing women much like she does herself: elegant, comfortable, easy, and always très chic. It’s that delicate balance that has made her eponymous label the best thing in dressed threads. New York Lifestyles caught up with the fashion mogul to get her story and the secret behind her success. How would you describe your brand? Inspired by my 20 years of living in Paris, I appreciate a certain easy elegance and believe that there is no such thing as luxury without comfort. My brand is designed to be comfortable, easy to care for, easy to wear, and has an effortless elegance to it. What is your aesthetic? I favor fit on the bottom and flow on the top. We offer thoughtful basics in fabrications that are season-less and focus on dramatic toppers in novelty fabrications and favor sweater knits for every season. I believe in simplicity and design restraint. What inspired you to start your label? One of my series, The Highlander, focused on stories that traversed the ages, allowing me to work with some of the best costume designers in the world. I loved learning about textiles and the history of clothing and how costumes defined a character and a time and place in history. When I returned to the U.S., there was a writer’s strike in 2007-08. I knew that finding a post-strike opportunity in an industry that paid me the kind of salary I was used to was about as likely as finding a natural blonde in Beverly Hills. I began contemplating my second act. I recognized that there was very little out there for women my age that fit our changing bodies and changing lifestyles. So, during the strike, I bought a sewing machine, pattern paper, and began sketching and sewing. By the time the strike was over, I was in Nordstrom, specialty stores across the country and on HSN and never looked back. Who is the Marla woman? I design for the modern woman. She is busy and enjoying her best life. She wants ease, comfort, and elegance in season-less fabrications that mix and match and take her everywhere her busy life leads her. The proper fit is her number one criteria, but she wants to stand out from the crowd and make a statement when she walks into a room. What is one thing every woman must have in their wardrobe? The perfect-fitting pair of black pants. What are the essentials for fall/ winter? Great basics are the foundation of every season, topped off with a third piece to complete her wardrobe. For me, it is always a statement piece—a dramatic topper or coat. Fabulous scarves are a must-have along with statement jewelry that lets you express your individuality. I don’t want to see women walking around the city in the winter looking like they’re related to the Michelin Man. So we work very hard to create fabulous coats and toppers that keep you warm but have a certain carefree elegance. 28 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

Marla Wynne

How did you get the confidence to start your label after the television career ended? Ignorance is bliss. When I started, I had no idea how difficult this business can be. Who are your heroes? My parents, Ruth Bader Ginsburg (no relation) Coco Channel and every woman who dared to ignore convention—and do it anyway! For more information on Marla Wynne, visit marlawynne.com. •

FRENCH DELIGHTS

A LEISURELY RIVER CRUISE THROUGH LYON & PROVENCE By Kristie Kellahan

y quest to leave no cheese behind begins at the covered food market, Les Halles, in the beautiful French city of Avignon. Strolling the aisles and chatting with stall-holders about their creamy goat cheese, truffle salt, fresh cherries, and just-baked brioche, I’m delighted by the Gallic way of artfully infusing life with daily pleasures. In a country where more than a thousand kinds of cheese can be enjoyed, the people live to eat, and not the other way around. Avignon is the starting point for Viking A BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE River Cruises’ seven-night cruise along the Rhône. Foodies and wine connoisseurs are well catered for as our lovely ship, the Viking Delling, ambles along with stops in charming medieval villages and some of the prettiest cities in the south of France. Days are filled with outings to Beaujolais wine country, olive oil tastings, truffle hunts and cooking classes where the secrets of Provençal cuisine are revealed.

Viking Aquavit Terrace

On the Tastes of Lyon shore excursion, we stop first at Cafe Jeannine & Suzanne. Named for owner Sophie’s two pastry-making grandmothers, the patisserie produces sweet delights that are almost too exquisite to eat. Next, we ooh and aah at chocolatier Louis Simart’s creations. His original invention, chocolate Lyon “cobblestones” are irresistibly nutty, creamy and crunchy. We learn about wine-and-cheese pairings at Bistro Martine, a typical Lyonnaise brasserie where a plaque above the door crows that author Albert Camus chose to celebrate his wedding here in 1940. At Epicerie Abel, we stuff delicious charcuterie in our mouths and consider the merits of moving permanently to France. Back on-board the Viking ship, all meals are included, as well as wine and beer with lunch and dinner. The house red and white comes from Famille Perrin, one of the leading winemaking families in the southern Rhône Valley. On the shore excursion to the famed Châteauneuf-duPape wine region, we tour their vineyards and cellars. A tasting follows. The area is known mostly for bold, big-bodied red wines, but the region also produces some terrific, fresh whites. With just 2,000 residents and 320 wine producers in the CDP region, it seems everyone and their uncle is somehow involved in the grape business. Our guide Sylvain, who hails from a long line of winemakers, says the best wine to buy “is the one you like.” With that in mind, many guests take the opportunity to buy several bottles to take back to the ship. The perfect spot to toast the day is on the ship’s Aquavit terrace. Located at the bow of the ship, the space offers an alternative to dining in the main restaurant for lunch and dinner. The al fresco option is relished by many guests, who sit out and enjoy meals with an emphasis on regional cuisine. Salad Lyonnaise (frisée lettuce, a poached egg, hot bacon, croutons, and Dijon vinaigrette), zesty bouillabaisse and coq au vin casserole hit the spot.

EXCURSIONS & MORE The Delling is a classy vessel, presented with the elegant forms and colors of Scandinavian design (Norwegian businessman, Torstein Hagen founded Viking). The clean and simple design is a soothing foil for the lavish extravagance of French cathedrals, museums and town halls along the route. Staterooms (there are no inside cabins) feature plenty of blond wood, bathrooms with heated floors, and comfy beds that invite afternoon naps. There are no casinos, no kids, and no tacky group activities. And with a maximum of 190 passengers, the ship never feels crowded. Viking prides itself on the quality of its shore excursions, offering a thoughtfully curated selection that adds to the cultural enrichment experience of cruising. Many are included in the cruise fare; seven are complimentary on this trip. All guests are invited to join a walk in Avignon to the Pope’s Palace and to take in a panoramic tour of Lyon. An escorted outing to the medieval village of Viviers is included, as is a steam train ride to a scenic plateau in Tournon-surRhône. One of the optional tours was designed for the budding artists in our group. Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin lived and worked in Arles towards the end of the 19th century; inspired by the light, the cafes and the Roman amphitheater. The day-long excursion, Arles in Van Gogh’s Footsteps, includes visits to some of their favorite haunts, as well as a painting class with a local artist. Participants return to the ship, triumphantly holding aloft their creations.

Grenache is the dominant grape. • Herbes de Provence is a tasty seasoning for many dishes, including roast meats, salads, and potatoes. Small bottles of the pre-mixed blend of marjoram, rosemary, thyme, and oregano are easy-to-carry souvenirs. • Pink pralines are a Lyon specialty. BARBADOS BOUNTY

IVORY BEACHES, RARE NATURAL WONDERS & PLENTY OF HISTORY. HERE’S YOUR PLACE IN THE SUN. By Patricia Elonac

n the island of Barbados—where monkeys are green, bread grows on trees, and fish fly—how could a Caribbean getaway be anything but magical? It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Lazy hours on a palm-fringed beach balanced by time spent exploring; memorable dinners at picture-perfect restaurants combined with forays into the local culture. If you enjoy getting up close and personal with multi-hued coral, tropical fish, and hawksbill turtles, there’s plenty of scuba diving, snorkeling, as well as catamaran sailing. This easternmost and most British of all the Caribbean isles—it didn’t gain its independence from England until 1966—offers all that and more. And Bajans (as islanders call themselves) deliver their hospitality with a warmth and charm that can’t be beaten. THE BEACH & BEYOND With more than 80 beaches to call your own, it’s no wonder travelers call this island one of the best to soak up the sun. For a breathtaking view of the roaring surf, head to the island’s east coast—the Atlantic side—where the waves pound the rugged coastline giving the area some of the best surfing in the Caribbean. Or in Bathsheba, enjoy the typical Bajan lunch at the Atlantis Hotel like West Indian Pepperpot, Flying Fish Trio, or Roti Fusion. Then head to Bathsheba Beach, with its unspoiled expanses of windswept sand, in otherworldly rock formations looking more like giant mushrooms. The sparse crowds will entice you to take a stroll in search of your surfside hideaway. While Barbados’ sandy shores are its main attraction, there is plenty to discover beyond the beach. The island’s many historic plantation Great Houses are testaments to the fertile land, which sprouts countless farms. Stop and visit St. Nicholas Abbey, built in 1660 and believed to be the oldest building on Barbados. This architectural gem has Dutch gables, finials of coral stone, and beautiful grounds to stroll. Nearby Cherry Tree Hill provides 32 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

one of the most scenic views of the island. Drive to the crest for one of many photo-ops. Be sure to explore the Barbados Wildlife Reserve where monkeys roam free—as do tortoises, hare, otters, and brightly colored tropical birds. And for a look at Barbados on the inside, visit Harrison’s Cave situated mid-island, east of St. James. Explore a natural cavern of coral limestone with waterfalls, streams, stalactites, and stalagmites. The tour offers a captivating look at the mysterious wonders in the underworld. You’ll find some of the best walking tours in the world, thanks to a stunning backdrop and the perfect climate. Getting out and about on a walking tour is one of the most enjoyable ways of discovering the beauty of the landscape, from lush forests to flawless beaches. At the same time, you’ll be learning about the rich culture of the island and its fascinating history. Some have been developed with beginners in mind, with little or no climbing involved. Truly an excellent way to get to know Bajans, explore the villages, and get a close-up glimpse of the local wildlife.

WINE & DINE Nightlife in Barbados is endless with its many festivals, clubs, and excellent restaurants. A dining experience unlikely to be matched awaits you at The Cliff. Perched atop a seaside precipice, each candlelit table overlooks the water, offering a stunning view to complement your unforgettable meal. Daphne’s is where to go to see and be seen. For more local fare, search out The Village Bar, tucked away in the tiny village of Lemon Arbour. Sample such specialties as Pudding and Souse (traditionally served on Saturday) along with Baked Macaroni Pie. Wash it all down with a local beverage such as golden apple juice or a ginger beer. Don’t miss your chance to mingle with the locals at Oistins Friday Night Fish Fry in Christ Church—a lively Bajan-style weekend street festival where Calypso music, local delicacies such as flying fish and Jug Jug (usually eaten at Christmas), and the island’s laidback mood all add up to carefree fun. No trip to Barbados is complete without a visit to the Mount Gay Rum Distillery—the oldest, most famous rum in the world. Expertly crafted from the rich sugar cane, then processed into molasses, it is eventually turned into liquid gold. After the tour let the master bartender make a special rum-based cocktail for you.

WHERE TO STAY

Resorts and hotels are generally small and luxurious. Most offer entertainment, activities, water sports and a spectacular sunset every night. Colony Club Hotel The signature hotel of the seven Elegant Hotel properties on Barbados is certainly elegant but with an understated style and tone that’s primarily targeted to adults. The resort boasts a beautiful beachfront and a lagoon-style pool that meanders through the 7 acres of tropical gardens—a romantic setting, indeed. Excellent service is a hallmark here. Turtle Beach Resort You’ll find plenty to do at Turtle Beach at this mostly family resort. First of all, it’s all-inclusive—so all meals, beverages, and activities are included in the rate. And the Flying Fish Kids’ Club keeps youngsters busy with treasure hunts, supervised swims, and games. That allows parents to play tennis, learn to windsurf or sail, relax on the beach, go exploring, or enjoy a dinner for two. Families also enjoy time together—cooling off in the three pools, riding the waves on boogie boards, and patronizing the famous ice cream parlor!

Sandy Lane

Sandy Lane Hotel & Golf Club Few places in the Caribbean can compare to Sandy Lane’s luxurious facilities and ultrapampering service—or its astronomical prices. But for the few who can afford to stay here—guests include royalty, celebrities, and the otherwise rich and famous—it’s an unparalleled experience. Enjoy elegant dining, the Caribbean’s best golf courses, a tennis center, and a full complement of water sports…even an airport welcome and round-trip transfers via luxury car. A 5-bedroom villa is available to those who wish to vacation in their private mansion. The Crane Founded in 1887 on a seaside cliff near the site of a small commercial port, it was the island’s first resort and has remained the Caribbean’s oldest hotel in continuous operation. Today, it has been transformed into a luxurious, gated, villa community with numerous pools, several restaurants and one of the best beaches in Barbados. The historic hotel rooms and suites are decorated with original antiques; corner suites have walls of windows and wraparound patios or balconies with panoramic views of the sea. HARBORING LOVE

A COZY INN HAS HEARTS AFLUTTER ON THE NORTH FORK By Bailey Beckett

t’s not uncommon for guests at the South Harbor Inn to get déjà vu: haven’t I been here before? It may be an Inn, but it feels like a Four Seasons or Mandarin Oriental. There are Frette linens on the bed, Diptyque amenities in the bathroom, plush robes hanging in the closet, and small hidden clues that you are indeed somewhere different, like a lint brush, make-up remover and even a hair dryer. It is these details that make the upscale B&B a magnet for discerning travelers looking for a quiet or winesoaked retreat to Long Island. Hospitality veterans and owners Alex Azcona and Dan DeVito, from (surprise!) Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental respectively, would have it no other way. “We both have such a passion for the hospitality business—now we can do what we love in a place that we love,” said Azcona. Echoes DeVito: “It’s a dream come true to be able to introduce guests to Southold’s small-town charm, delicious local restaurants, wineries, and the natural beauty of the area’s beaches, bays. and countryside.” 38 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

South Harbor Inn

THE PERFECT WEEKEND AWAITS

That’s if you want to leave. With just four rooms, South Harbor Inn, originally built as a cross gable-style farmhouse in 1898, is a cozy respite in the country. In addition to luxe guest rooms, including one with a free-standing bathtub that makes bubbles bountiful, the inn features lots of small, stylish public places, like living room, parlor, and patio. The attention to detail is impeccable: bespoke furnishings, a fascinating collection of books, impeccable décor. South Harbor Inn also has a large communal dining room table for breakfast, which Alex makes with the enthusiasm of the most seasoned chef. Simply put, this is the perfect place to curl up with a good book, glass of wine, plate of cheese, or just scroll through your phone to delete messages you now have time to delete. Of course, the main attraction is the North Fork and its beaches, bays, wineries, restaurants, boutiques and seasonal fares make it especially convenient. Nearby Greenport has dozens of dining options, from the casual to upscale, like the breezy American Beech (americanbeech.com/home), offering unpretentious dining in a 19th-century horse stable, or the sleek Noah’s (chefnoahs.com/about), where seasonal fares are reinterpreted by chef Noah Schwartz through the lens of Sonoma-meets-the-North Fork. A burger at the Whiskey Wind (whiskeywindtavern.com), a shabby chic tavern on the main drag of town, is also a relaxed way to enjoy a spirit and burger in the middle of the day. Even closer to South Harbor Inn is A Lure (alurenorthfork.com), a chowder house and oyster-ia offering terrific seafood in a bayside setting. Alex Azcona (right) and Dan Devito (left)

A prime reason to go to the North Fork are the wineries, and there are several in particular you’ll want to visit. Shinn Estate Vineyards (shinnestatevineyards.com) is perhaps the most upscale. The familyowned winery and farmhouse, in the heart of the island, offers a variety of blends for tasting or purchase, including a 2018 “First Fruit” Sauvignon Blanc, 2016 Sparkling Brut, or Estate Merlot among others. Jamesport Vineyards (jamesportwines.com) offers what it calls “an iron first in a velvet glove,” owed to its “artful balance between ripeness and restraint, softness, and structure” (there are also pizza bites on the menu. Sold!) The oldest winery in Long Island is Castello di Borghese (borghesevineyard. com), which offers French grape varietals in a family-like setting. And just up the street from South Harbor Inn (we promise, because we walked it!) is Croteaux (croteaux.com/home), the only rosé vineyard in the U.S. where merlots, cabernet Francs and sauvignon blancs are made on the estate, mixing traditional tastes of southern France with the signature, seaside style of North Fork. So, grab the weekend bag and get going. The wine is perfectly chilled, and your luxury bedding awaits. THE RITZ-CARLTON ORLANDO, GRANDE LAKES SUPERIOR CLUB LEVEL PAMPERING By Stacey Zable

n my first day during a long weekend stay at the 582-room Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, I quickly learned that superior service at the property is ingrained in every member of the staff. When I asked where The Ritz-Carlton Spa was located at the front desk, I was not handed a map or pointed in a certain direction. A staff member personally walked me to the door of the expansive spa building, wishing me a wonderful experience within its walls. That level of service grows even further for guests who opt for The Ritz-Carlton Club Level accommodations. For me, the main reason to upgrade to Club is access to the Club Level Lounge and all the extras that come with it. The friendly concierge staff is ready to help with any request, whether it’s dining or spa or tour reservations. You’ll also be able to check out and settle your bill in the comfort of the Club Lounge and even print your return airline ticket. The Club Lounge provides five food buffet presentations throughout the day, plus drinks and alcoholic beverages and such anytime snacks as giant freshly baked cookies and jars of favorite candies. Breakfast and lunch are also presented along with afternoon snacks. Stop into the Club Lounge pre- or post-dinner for a glass of wine with hors d’oeuvres before and desserts after your meal.

FARM-TO-FORK

The dining experience within the Club Lounge is just part of the food frenzy of offerings with seven dining and lounge options at The Ritz-Carlton and eight more at the adjacent 1,000-room JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes. Depending on your mood, choices include casual to fine dining, varying cuisines and farm-to-fork offerings. The resort has its own on-site Whisper Creek Farm, a 7,000-square-foot fruit and vegetable garden plus a chicken coop and an apiary. At JW Marriott’s Whisper Creek Farm: The Kitchen, dine on comfort foods and craft beers made at the hotel’s own brewery. The Farm and other local products are part of the ingredients used for The Ritz-Carlton’s The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes Highball & Harvest’s Southern-inspired cuisine. BITS & BAILEY

THE WHO, WHAT & WOW OF THE LUXE SCENE By Bailey Beckett

heers, dears. The social scene is in full swing, offering a calendar filled with parties, galas, benefits, dinners, restaurants, store openings and cultural events, not to mention foliage in Central Park and on residential streets. It’s one of my favorite months (I also like January when I get to wear Hermès sweaters). In the meantime, dear readers, feed on these tasty morsels. ROME HOME

A delightful surprise on the culinary scene is Leonelli Taberna, a casual Roman-inspired trattoria, craft cocktail bar and lounge located in The Evelyn Hotel in the city’s chic NoMad neighborhood. Its ambiance—art deco design and rich color palette of dark woods, green marble, and amber tones—bridges Old New York with Old World Italy, but it’s the menu that charms: rustic Italian cuisine inspired by historic Roman eateries. Some of the favorites include Pesce and Carne; vegetables which Chef Jonathan Benno sources from produce in the neighboring Union Square Greenmarket; bread baked using flour milled at the restaurant; Salumi sourced from artisanal producer New England Charcuterie; and selections like stuzzichini, antipasti and pasta Al Forno that can be shared by the table, or enjoyed as an entrée with an Insalata of fresh vegetables. “Since I was a kid, I’ve always had a love affair with Italian food,” says Benno. “The comfort of it reminds me of sitting around the table with my family and eating my grandma’s eggplant parmesan, made with eggplant picked from our garden. That’s the feeling I want to recreate for guests at Leonelli Taberna.” In naming the restaurant, Benno wanted to pay tribute to The Eternal City. Leonelli, he reasoned, refers to the significance of the lion and the “strength, courage, leadership, and ‘the majesty of the Roman people.” Info: leonellitaberna.com. Shun ©Adrien Dirand

SHUN THIS SPOTLIGHT

Also tickling my fancy this month is Shun, a contemporary French restaurant with Japanese influences in midtown off Lexington Avenue. Helmed by Michelin-starred Chef Alain Verzeroli, longtime protégé of legendary French Chef Joël Robuchon and designed by award-winning French architect Joseph Dirand, the Art Deco-designed restaurant and bar features a 58-seat dining room and open kitchen and Bar Shun, a cocktail lounge with 38 seats. Pronounced “shoon,” the restaurant is named for the Japanese culinary tradition that celebrates seasonal food at its peak flavor, which is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture. Its menu features cuisine grounded in French technique, selectively integrating Japanese flavors and aesthetics. Divided into four sections, it includes dishes like Scallops Crudo, Beets & Radishes, Citrus, King Crab, Daikon & Herbs, Honey, Lemongrass Lobster, Tomato Confit, Leeks and Shun’s Long Island Duck à l’Orange, Peach and Cherries. “Shun combines my experiences working in both France and Japan,” said Verzeroli, who most recently served as Director of Culinary Operations at Château Restaurant Joël Robuchon in Tokyo. “Our aim was to create a luxurious yet minimalist space focusing on the Japanese philosophy of seasonality. Everything will serve to calm the senses from the exquisite design and the chosen color palette to the menu, and artisanal tableware settings imported from Japan and France.” The décor is just as striking. Interior elements evoke Art Deco glamour with a dramatic mix of rich materials, including two tones of Alcantara fabrics for the walls and seating; Italian ivory marble walls and floors; striking dark woods; mirrored glass, and three types of bespoke lacquer. Dirand also custom-designed the furniture including velvet upholstered banquettes, armchairs, tables and consoles. French artist and sculptor Philippe Anthonioz was commissioned to create chandeliers and wall sconces with a white plaster finish that adorn the double-height ceilings. Info: shun-nyc.com.

MAD FOR SAKS

It’s no secret Saks Fifth Avenue is one of Bailey’s favorite abodes—I once had my mail forwarded there—and I’m not yet over-the-swoon of its recent renovation, which included creating a second floor beauty destination and adding the chiceat-meet L’Avenue to its top two floors. But my Y chromosome attracted me to something more over the top: An 8,000-foot shoe destination bringing all its 60 brands—including Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Brunello Cucinelli, Burberry, Celine, Dior, Fendi, Givenchy, Gucci, John Lobb, Prada, Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo, Valentino, Versace and 15 new brands—on the sixth floor. Also on the floor, you’ll find AGLIT ITALY Lace Bar for personalization; made-to-order programs with luxury brands and a Leather Spa shoe shining and repair station. “Luxury footwear is the gateway for men’s customers into fashion and the new shoe experience is just the beginning of exciting things to come for our menswear offering,” said. Marc Metrick, President, Saks Fifth Avenue. “Men’s is a growing category at Saks, where we have seen a consistently positive customer response both in our stores and online. We are continuing to redefine the luxury shopping experience while giving our customers another compelling reason to shop with Saks.” I’m sold! But the lux doesn’t stop with the lads. As part of its grand renovation, Saks also premiered The Vault, 12,000 square foot space dedicated to high fine jewelry and watches. The Vault houses an assortment of more than 25 brands, 20 of which are new to Saks New York, including one-of-a-kind and limitededition pieces. It’s the largest selection of men’s watches Saks has ever offered. Accessed by a Rem Koolhaas-designed escalator, the new space also features six high fine jewelry shop-in-shops, eight vendor-designed watch shops, and two additional private VIP rooms. In addition, there’s an International Lounge, which offers a multilingual concierge service for global visitors, daily store tours and jewelry and watch repair services. A centrally located Exhibition Space will serve as an area to feature brand partners, guest curators, special collaborations and more. “We have created the ultimate luxury destination for high fine jewelry and watches in New York City,” said Tracy Margolies, Saks Fifth Avenue, Chief Merchant. “The Vault takes the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship experience to the next level.” Info:saksfifthavenue.com.

FASHION SLEEK

Sasha Siem ©Caroline Fiss

On the eve of New York Fashion Week, British singer/songwriter Sasha Siem serenaded a VIP gathering at the tony Park Loggia, a new luxury residential building on the Upper West Side. Sponsored by the Daily Front Row, the intimate party featured Siem performing five of her songs from her upcoming album, Holy. More than 100 guests stood mesmerized as Siem sang as she played the Steinway piano, even eliciting a sing along to her hit single “Holey, Wholly, Holy.” Attending the soiree were Siem’s business partner Shani Lehrer from Sound Sanctum Records, the label they have started. Also in attendance was People magazine editor-in-chief Dan Wakeford, super model Alex Lundqvist, made famous from Hugo Boss; The Voice winner Chris Weaver, ShoesOf’s Lexi Cross and Huston Conti. Hosted by Gillian Miniter and Marc Rozic, the event served as a pre- kick off to NY Fashion Week, where Siem would go on to win New Wave Artist of the Year at the Fashion Media Awards. The setting of the Park Loggia for Siem’s coming out party proved brilliant: the soaring structure on West 61st Street is one of the most buzzed about buildings in Manhattan. You just knew you were in for a special night as soon as you entered the Park Loggia’s private porte-cochere entrance into a lobby featuring a double-height ceiling with a sculpted terra-cotta detail and and custom rock crystal chandeliers. TECH TALK

CALL ME MAYBE: THE NEW CLASS OF 2019 PHONES By Will Read

ust like the lyrics in the Carly Rae Jepsen song sometimes we feel the waiting for new cellphones can be a preoccupation for some. Just think of everything they do that does not involve speaking to another human being. The cellphone has become the object of obsession as a camera, television, movie maker, jukebox, wallet and everything else in between—not to mention the Internet! APPLE

In the USA Counterpoint’s 2016 market share survey indicated that three players—Apple, Samsung, and LG—account for some 70 percent of the market, with Apple having some 40 percent of the market with its iPhone product. In the technology calendar, September was punctuated by the annual iPhone product announcements from Apple which kick-start the industry push into the holiday season. If your cellphone is not working properly, out of date, or a contract renewal is imminent here are some of the new crop to consider.

iPhone 11, Pro & Pro Max Launched on September 10th in the annual presentation, Apple has built on the revolutionary features of the iPhone Xr and Xs into the newest additions to their range. The new iPhone 11 offers across the board improvements on its predecessors. The iPhone 11 Pro is the new flagship cellphone which builds on the features of the 2018 iPhones with more and better cameras and a faster processor. The Pro Max has the larger 6.5” screen and commensurate battery life. Announced simultaneously, The new Apple Watch Series 5 also has an array of health and exercise functionality plus (depending on the model) the ability to receive and make calls. Info: apple.com.

SAMSUNG Galaxy S10 5G & Galaxy Note 10+ 5G The challenger to Apple’s iPhone, iPad and Watch dominance, the Galaxy S10 and Note 10+ 5G phones, Tab Tablet and Galaxy Watch are all designed to keep Samsung as the primary alternative to the Apple ecosystem utilizing the Android operating system from Google. The latest release to hold consumer interest is the larger Galaxy Note 10+ which comes in two screen sizes and has interesting features such as the ability to charge a device from another device by placing them in contact. Samsung is also playing heavily on 5G high-speed capabilities, though in truth the networks capable of delivering the speed to everyone, everywhere are still being rolled out. Featuring an integral stylus as a tool reminds us of the Apple Newton, Palm Pilots and Psion handheld computers of what seems like the medieval period. Info: samsung.com.

LG

PUNKT

THE BLACK DIAMOND IPHONE 5

V50 ThinQ 5G The key selling point for the LG is that it is reliable, middleof-the-road and for the budget conscious consumer a solid purchase. The designers are also on point with integrating such features as three camera lenses (telephoto, super wide, and standard) to improve the quality of picture-taking and is 5G ready. Info: lg.com.

MP02 Minimalist Phone Swiss-based company Punkt launched the second version of their anti-smart phone the MP02 Minimalist Phone. Featuring a post-industrial design centered on making telephone calls and basic functionality such as 4G TLE connectivity, an address book and text messaging, the MP02 adds hotspot connectivity so that you can use the phone to access the web through another device—making it a choice rather than a reflex through an app. Battery life is excellent due to its simplicity and quality is what you would expect from a Swiss-engineered device. Info: punkt.ch.

Yes, technologically it is only an iPhone 5. However, Designer Stuart Hughes has coated the iPhone in black diamonds resulting in a retail price of $15.3 million making it currently the most expensive mobile phone in the World. With a 24k gold case and over 600 diamonds you will clearly attract attention when using it and although you may be nervous about losing it, if you can afford it, you can probably also afford someone to keep an eye on it. THE SUITE LIFE ON CELEBRITY SUMMIT

THE “MODERNIZED” SHIP STEPS IT UP FOR THE RETREAT GUEST By Stacey Zable

elebrity Summit re-emerged at Cape Liberty, NJ, this year after an impressive “bow-to-stern transformation” that is part of The Celebrity Revolution—a $500 million commitment to fleet-wide upgrades and modernization. Among the changes to the 2,158-guest ship were the additions of amenities and features dedicated to The Retreat suite class guest to make them feel like, well, a celebrity. Look for Celebrity Summit to sail the Caribbean this winter from San Juan and return to Cape Liberty for Bermuda, Canada/New England and Iceland and Greenland sailings May through October 2020. Here are five reasons to book The Retreat on Celebrity Summit that we found during our 7-night Bermuda cruise from Cape Liberty. It proved that the suite life is most definitely super sweet.

THE RETREAT LOUNGE

As soon as you arrive at the port it begins with priority checkin, which usually means no waiting. You are whisked into The Retreat Lounge on Celebrity Summit to meet your concierge upon boarding. In-suite services include a personal butler who can unpack and pack your clothes (if you wish) and handle all individual requests. Added as part of the modernization and open 24/7, The Retreat Lounge may be where you’ll find yourself the most while sailing Celebrity Summit. This inviting guestsonly lounge is manned by an exclusive concierge to handle all reservations and arrangements necessary onboard or while in port. Complimentary beverages and small bites at select times make it perfect for pre-dinner, or throughout the day when you want to grab a bottled water, soda, coffee, or cocktail. The relaxing lounge is designed as an escape, where you can leisurely chat, enjoy board or card games, watch television, or read your favorite best-seller novel. 52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

THE RETREAT SUNDECK

Another exclusive spot is The Retreat Sundeck. This expansive outdoor area is located at the front of the ship and features lounge chairs, outdoor beds, a hot tub, and a small space to dine on a lunch menu. Attendants offer complimentary fruit skewers to quench your hunger and are available to take your drink orders (though not complimentary here) while you enjoy the sun. Celebrity Summit also has an outdoor swimming pool with hot tubs and sundeck as well as an indoor pool with pulsating massage water features and hot tubs in the peaceful space of the Solarium reserved for guests ages 18 and older.

DINING CHOICES

The intimate Luminae suite-guests-only restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Its modern cuisine menus created by Celebrity’s Michelin-starred chef are exclusive to the restaurant. Open seating allows you to eat when you want, and efforts are made to pair you with the same wait staff, so they know your likes and dislikes. You may also order from the menu offered at the Cosmopolitan Restaurant main dining room and even choose to dine there any time you wish. The ship boasts nine dining venues when you want to step outside The Retreat’s dedicated restaurant. The Retreat guests can also dine at no additional cost at specialty restaurant Blu, offering “Clean Cuisine” (based on availability with AquaClass guests getting priority). For quick bites, the Oceanview Café buffet provides another choice for early morning to late-night dining. The Spa Café, with its lighter bites inside the Solarium, became a favorite spot for us mid-day. Specialty restaurants available for an additional fee are Qsine for its globally-influenced menu, Tuscan Grille for Italian dishes, and Sushi on Five featuring a menu of sushi and noodle dishes. Café al Bacio & Gelateria is the place for gelatos and Italian ices at an extra charge, plus pastries and specialty coffees.

SUITE CHOICES

As part of the revitalization, all staterooms and suites on Celebrity Summit have been completely redesigned. There are four classes of suites with amenities including such luxurious touches as celebrity’s exclusive bedding, large flat-screen televisions with free on-demand movies, tote bag, and welcome aboard fresh flowers and bottle of champagne or sparkling wine depending on suite category. The Retreat guest not only has access to the above exclusive offerings but can be a part of the regular ship activities and entertainment. Our relaxing days at sea were spent at The Retreat Sundeck or the Solarium and playing trivia. The nightly karaoke, live music in the lounges, and shows in the theater were ideal ways to enjoy our evenings. REAL ESTATE & YOUR HOME

AROUND TOWN DOWNTOWN MANHATTAN By TJ Johnson

eing one of the oldest neighborhoods in New York, Downtown Manhattan has some of the last remaining cobblestone streets and plenty of beautiful landmark buildings. There is a reason behind the recent boom in residential sales going on in the district. You can find breathtaking lofts that were converted from old office buildings and old banks, or high rise luxury apartments with lots of amenities. Let’s discuss some of the residential buildings available now. 25 PARK ROW Offering 110 residences, 25 Park Row is a 21st-century architectural icon at the center of the New Downtown, providing unmatched views from every residence over historic City Hall Park. At 25 Park Row, COOKFOX Architects has created the quintessential downtown luxury condominium, reinterpreting the classic Art Deco skyscraper through an expressive series of cascading terraces, setbacks, and loggias. Residents can exclusively enjoy The Park Row Club—a richly appointed amenity suite designed by Studio Mellone, featuring vast leisure spaces, soaring ceilings, and grandly-scaled windows overlooking City Hall Park. The Club offers a library and screening room, lounge, billiards room, bar, dining room, playroom, golf simulator, and a fitness center with a yoga studio and a 65-foot swimming pool. The Park Row Club Garden and Dining Terrace offers over 7,000 square feet of outdoor space for entertainment, relaxation, and play—including lounge and living spaces, a grilling kitchen, a trellised dining area, and a naturalistic play-scape and a lawn. 25 Park Row

125 GREENWICH STREET Designed by world-renowned architect Rafael Viñoly, 125 Greenwich Street offers 273 residences ranging from studios to three-bedroom and penthouse residences. Rafael Viñoly’s concept for 125 Greenwich Street: a double I-beam section standing on end. The exposed architectural wall serves as the structural backbone for the tower. Continuous, full-height, floor-to-ceiling curtain walls provide maximum visibility and clarity. The tower’s residential entrance is marked by recessed solid dark bronze doors and panels. March & White have envisioned each residence, masterfully amplifying space, light and other iconic building’s architecture, with finishes offered in three distinct palettes. More space to relish life. More space for working, entertaining, and for lounging and soaking up the sun (or taking shelter from the rain), for enjoying an afternoon siesta on a long, plush lounge. The onebedroom residence is ideal for those who need a little more square feet. The most casual of meals are elevated—transformed to impressive affairs— with panoramas of the Hudson River as their backdrop. The rounded glass wall and open-plan architecture augment entertaining space, and imbue your dining quarters with an easy, laid back elegance. 125 Greenwich Street is an exercise in detailed perfection. March & White drew on their work with superyachts, places where high-end detailing and precise efficiency are critical. The apartments are multi-adaptable, functioning differently depending on the time of day and use. For instance, the kitchen can completely disguise itself. When this happens, it has the presence of a piece of sublime sculptural art. Info: average price per square foot: $2,230-$2,594.

125 Greenwich Street

30 WARREN STREET This is a boutique-scale, ground-up, new development condominium transforming an entire block-front in Tribeca. Designed by François Leininger of Post-Office Architectes, 30 Warren houses 23 design-forward residences with a clean and refreshing Tribeca aesthetic and distinctly modern layouts. The building boasts a thoughtfully crafted facade featuring numerous setbacks and oversized windows that offer each residence incredible light, air, and views. 30 Warren residences feature artisanal wood work by Hudson LaGrange, hand built and finished in New York’s Hudson Valley. Committed to ensuring the highest quality millwork, Hudson LaGrange uses only the finest locally sourced materials, such as highest grade white oak and black walnut. All materials are locally sourced, eco-friendly, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. A private entrance off charming Warren Street welcomes residents home to a 24/7 attended lobby with rich embellishments, intricately detailed with stone slab flooring, hand-finished oak paneling, ductal wall cladding, custom champagne and black anodized metal panels, and custom brass light fixtures. 30 Warren Street

DINING OUT With so many dining options available downtown, there are the tried-and-true classics that always satisfy. One must-go-to restaurant in FiDi is, of course, Delmonico’s (delmonicos.com). Founded in 1837, it claims to be the first restaurant in New York City. It’s a traditional steak house and the food is fantastic. You also get to say you are at the first restaurant in New York City! Another is certainly becoming a classic. Luke’s Lobster (lukeslobster.com) is my favorite for Lobster Rolls. It’s like a taste of Maine in Manhattan. If you are interested in the this or any other neighborhood in Manhattan, contact The StarrJohnsonTeam for all your selling and buying needs. •

The amenity suite at 30 Warren caters to the essentials of daily life, including: a fitness and wellness studio, children’s playroom, private storage, and bicycle storage. Info: average price per square foot-$2,260-$2,262.

POOLS IN NYC HOMES MAKING A BIG SPLASH By AP Connolly

ove to swim, but don’t want to have to trek to a gym to get your laps in? With cooler temps around the corner, why not buy with the convenience of a pool. Swimming pools are almost as old as urban civilization. Dating to 2600 B.C. they were called Great Baths. These ancient city pools were built of fired and mortared brick and covered with a tar-based sealant. Not much has changed about the concept or importance of pools over the millennia. Designed in different shapes and sizes, pools today not only are a convenient recreation but add status to New York City living. Here, some places to consider that come complete with stunning pools.

ROSE HILL

CLASSIC ELEGANCE IN GOTHAM By AP Connolly | Images Courtesy of Rockefeller Group

ver 90 years ago, Rockefeller Group was formed to develop and build Rockefeller Center. John D. Rockefeller Jr., the visionary behind Rockefeller Center, and in turn, the founder of what has become today’s Rockefeller Group, set the bar extremely high for projects that are meant to be timeless, through bold vision unrivaled in his time and attention to detail that still inspires greatness. But perhaps the most salient example of the Rockefellers’ values and ambitions was the construction of Rockefeller Center. Built at the height of the depression, this unprecedented city within a city became a symbol of stability and optimism throughout the 1930s. With daring, bravado and no small amount of personal risk, John D. Rockefeller Jr. tapped his personal fortune to transform 12 acres of midtown Manhattan into one of the great public spaces of all time. OCTOBER 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 61

ART DECO WITH A MODERN TWIST

Now the leading national large-scale urban developer has launched Rose Hill, its first-ever residential tower in its home city—Manhattan. The 45-story Rose Hill, currently under construction at 30 East 29th Street, is unlike any other new residential building in New York. It embraces Art Deco DNA while creating a modern new genre of the luxury apartment buildings. In-home flex spaces, urban resort amenities, and exciting collaborations are just some of the surprises residents will find appealing. The name Rose Hill is a nod to the location of the building in the most historic section of NoMad, once part of the 130-acre Rose Hill Farm estate. It is designed inside and out by CetraRuddy, the award-winning New York-based firm successful for their well-received residential buildings that blend modern design with historical elements. Rose Hill draws a direct connection back to Rockefeller Center with its heavy Art Deco influence of the 20th century. Rising over 600 feet in height and clad in an ornamental bronze façade, the contemporary design, although rooted in the past, speaks to today’s modern New Yorker.

HOW HACKETT INTERIORS BRINGS DESIGN DETAIL TO MAKE THE LOOK By Cecilia Ruane

fficially founded in 2016, Hackett Interiors is a passion project between two sisters, Meghan Hackett-Cassidy and Erin Hackett. Meghan has been working in the interior design industry for over ten years, and before starting her own business, worked for Ken Gemes of Bronxville, NY and Victoria Hagan of New York, NY. With her little sister’s background and expertise in marketing and business operations, the two decided to join forces in the launch of Hackett Interiors—the Bronxville, NY-based interior design firm known for its incredible mix of high and low, its sophisticated yet functional projects, and its adored sister duo behind it all. “The best part about a project is getting to know our clients and their families,” says Meghan and Erin. “We take a lot of pride in designing spaces that are reflective of how they’re utilized and make sure that style is not sacrificed entirely for function.” When it comes to working with a designer and finding the best fit for your next renovation project, Meghan and Erin highly suggest taking your time to find a design team. Search for someone who understands not only your design interests and style, but also your lifestyle, your family needs, and all of the other daily functions of a household. ©Emily Sidoti

PERSONALITY & LONGEVITY

It’s crucial. If you find someone that understands the details that go beyond your favorite paint colors or pillows (though, important!), the process will be far more enjoyable and effective. The duo recommends asking questions at the beginning and throughout the design process. They also stress asking additional questions that touch on your lifestyle and its function. When designing or renovating your home, the process should never be rushed, as full home projects are typically a longer-term commitment that a single-room renovation. The duo loves to mix high and low pieces, and their ultimate goal is to design a home with personality and longevity. Most recently, they completed a stunning home in Bronxville (pictured here on these pages) that represents the ultimate marriage of livable luxury. The clients, a husband and wife duo who work full time in New York City and who grew up in Bronxville, wanted the design to be reflective of the home’s classic architectural elements. Sticking with a primarily neutral color palette, Meghan and Erin brought in a variety of accessories for the client that add sophisticated color and pattern pops. From playful wall-coverings to chic wall art, and beyond, the living spaces, kitchen nook, and the bedroom were given a bright revamp.

68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

MAKING THE MOST OF SPACE

The home’s natural bright light and windows throughout set the scene for a muted and tonal color scheme, but the sisters wanted to ensure that each space didn’t fall flat. In the living spaces, for instance, sleek accent décor was added throughout including ottomans that could be easily-transitioned for entertaining or extra seating, along with coffee tables, mirrors, and artwork. The scale of each room was extremely important to the duo as well. Meghan and Erin always make sure to map out a floor plan to ensure that they can make the most out of a space without overwhelming or underwhelming the room. For example, in the TV viewing room, the duo incorporated an L-shaped sofa against the wall with a single ottoman and side table facing the built-in television. These choices allowed for a functional and comfortable room that wasn’t too overcrowded or busy. The kitchen nook is perfect for quick or on-the-go mornings which is typical for many of Hackett Interiors’ busy clients. Meghan and Erin wanted to give this client, in particular, an area in the kitchen that was designated for more than just sitting. They added a wide variety of plush pillows, a round eating table, and two additional chairs on the opposite side, creating a more formal eating area without making it feel like an entire dining table or setting. With a muted and tonal color palette in the decor, space strays from all-white and lackluster without feeling out of place in the primarily white kitchen. Meghan and Erin often opt for sleek grays, and off-blues, to beautifully enhance an otherwise neutral space without clashing in the overall theme. The entire home ultimately carries a cohesive color palette and aesthetic throughout each room that allowed the duo to bring in pieces that could function in a variety of spaces.

RETHINKING YOUR FOREVER HOME

Erin (left) ad Meghan (righ) ©Emily Gilbert

Very true to the style that Hackett Interiors have become well-known for and much sought after, the result of this home was an environment that felt and looked luxurious while it also functioned as an every-day space for work, play, entertaining, and beyond for the client. If you’re looking to design or renovate your forever home, Meghan and Erin suggest looking for a design team that not only create for longevity but also reflects your style as well as a style that is in line with your home and its bones. Often, the project goes far beyond the “big stuff,” and it’s the details that your designer will be bringing in that will make the most difference for you and your family. JEALOUSY

HOW TO KEEP IT FROM RUINING YOUR LIFE By Peter M. Kalellis

he feeling of jealousy is sad and insidious. A man who notices that his wife or partner praises the virtues of another man feels uncomfortable and allows this jealousy to take possession of his mind. A woman whose husband or partner is trying to find employment for her girlfriend may fear that a love affair may develop. Such a woman is setting herself up for a jealous existence. PROBLEMS THAT CAN ESCALATE

Jealousy is an emotional condition that engages one person in a fervent struggle against another. It starts when an individual feels that the other has an advantage. Most people are affected by this emotion in varying degrees of intensity and frequency as they compete and compare themselves to others. Jealous individuals cannot harm others by their feelings of jealousy; primarily, they hurt themselves. When jealous feelings persist, there is no peace, and problems in any relationship that can escalate into hatred. Since the dawn of history, in most human relationships, in the arts and drama, among races and nations, jealousy is present. I want to have what you have. It is sad to notice jealousy among adults. In most fields of endeavor, this pervasive emotion causes anxiety, anger—even hostility. Why are they always whispering and smiling together? Where does he get all that money? Jealous people tacitly acknowledge their inability to maintain the love of a spouse and further admit unworthiness of affection. The very nature of jealousy is an attempt to overshadow the other by denying their freedom of thought, activity, and personal initiative. These are indispensable ingredients for healthy communications and the preservation of enduring love.

Amazing For Pain

“I have tried many products over the years and fully endorse this product. It has helped me with so many aches and pains and is the perfect pain cream for even your modest to moderate pain. I recommend this product for anyone that suffers from any sort of pain in their joints, back, legs or anywhere else.” Dayton Callie (Sons of Anarchy)

KEEP THESE IN MIND

• Most people disclaim possession of such an evil emotion as jealousy. At times they may not be aware that they are possessed by envy. They deny such feelings: Me, jealous? What makes you think I’m jealous? I feel just fine. • Have you ever noticed how jealousy surfaces among adults? The habit of comparing and competing is so widespread that many people firmly believe that it is a law of nature. • Mature, responsible, self-reliant people have little or no need to compete with anyone. They are too self-confident to make jealous comparisons or to blackmail, cheat, destroy, and torment others to rise above them. • If you imagine that your happiness depends upon another person, and you become consumed by jealousy of other people, you are deluding yourself. True happiness is a product of a good heart and a pure spirit. • Analyze the reality of your feelings. They can be emotionally and physically consuming. Realize the detriment to your health, peace of mind, and the destruction jealousy causes to your relationship with your spouse. •

THE CAPITAL GRILLE WHEN ONLY THE BEST WILL DO! By Anne Raso

f you constantly dream of diving into a prime dry-aged steak in a chic yet relaxed atmosphere, The Capital Grille is the perfect eating excursion for you. There are three conveniently located Manhattan locations (Financial District, Midtown West, and Midtown East) that are the kinds of places you’ll want to “sink your teeth into.” New York Lifestyles recently visited the Chrysler Tower location and we were seated in the spectacular Atrium known as The Trylon. Its glass and metal peaks mimic the architecture of the Chrysler Building’s rooflines. The airy, art deco feeling of that room is something that you won’t soon forget. The Capital Grille puts an elegant yet modern spin on the traditional New York steakhouse tradition. It has everything you would expect—large cuts of dry-aged prime beef and classic steakhouse sides and desserts like Caesar Salad and New York Style Cheesecake, respectively. But you also have world-class lobster, surf and turf and hand-selected fish. The pasta dishes here are more experimental than you might expect and that just might be due to Executive Chef Juan Arboleda. You see, he cut his teeth at acclaimed Northern Italian cooking schools and eateries. The handsome bearded Long Island native came aboard in 2007 as a sous chef and worked up to executive chef in 2011. He has since not only kept the Chrysler Tower location earning rave reviews but has overseen the openings of numerous locations in the U.S. and Mexico.

AWARD-WINNING FARE We asked Chef Juan the highlights of being the executive chef of The Capital Grille Chrysler Center and what features of the restaurant he feels are truly unique. He remarked, “In terms of unique features, The Capital Grille is best known for our expertly prepared dry-aged steaks, which are hand-cut by our in-house butcher. The restaurant is also recognized for our exceptional wine list of more than 350 selections, curated by our Advanced Sommelier. Our wine list includes some of the most highly allocated and sought-after wines in the world, including many options rarely offered by the glass. Beyond our cuisine, we offer a unique space for diners. The Trylon Tower in the Chrysler Building, designed by architect Philip Johnson, is a one-of-a-kind in New York City.” Not to be overlooked are the inventive cocktails like “Grapefruit Fire & Ice,” and French 75 two favorites with the regular crowd. 72 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

The Capital Grille

We continued the conversation posing a couple additional questions to Chef Juan. What are the challenges of being the chef of a legendary NYC steakhouse? He reveals in a serious tone, “I’ve been doing this for more than 30 years. In this industry, it is not necessarily about getting to the top but maintaining your position. I am focused on maintaining the quality of our cuisine and ensuring we remain relevant in the NYC market. A critical component of that drive is our commitment to offering our guests the highest level of hospitality.” Who is the typical clientele of The Capital Grille? “It varies. Weekly we host many work events, executives, and teams in the lounge, whereas the dining room is often the place for celebrations that bring together generations. Our guest base is as diverse as this wonderful city, and we love having the opportunity to offer The Capital Grille experience to everyone, no matter what the occasion.”

SOURCING THE BEST MEAT & PRODUCE We were curious to know whether The Capital Grille is all about farm to table and, if so, who is selecting the meat, seafood, and produce? Chef Juan explained: “What we’re known for is bringing the taste of luxury into everything we prepare for guests. Ultimately, our beef comes from the top ranchers in the United States. We specialize in dry-aging steak, a process that takes 18 to 24 days under the careful supervision of our in-house butcher Through dry-aging, we are able to intensify the flavor and maximize the tenderness of our meat—and through controlled humidity and airflow, we remove moisture from the beef, which provides our meat with flavor and tenderness that we believe is unparalleled.” How does the restaurant keep up with the trends for the healthy and vegan fare? Responds Chef Juan, “We are always keeping our eye on the latest trends and happy to work with guests to prepare dishes to their specifications. We can adjust any of our recipes to meet dietary restrictions such as low sodium, gluten sensitive, vegetarian, and the like. And while we are known for our expertly prepared dry-aged steaks, The Capital Grille is committed to offering a diverse menu for those seeking a different kind of meat alternative.”

Buratta

WORLD-CLASS BURGERS Yearning for a juicy burger? The Wagyu & Wine promotion is offered in the Lounge area of all Capital Grille restaurants through November 17th—and aims to please. You get a sizeable 8-ounce Wagyu burger prepared in one of three styles (it includes artisinal cheeses and exotic mushrooms), and a choice of three Napa Valley reds from iconic local wineries—all for $25. No reservations are necessary for the Lounge. Of course, we wanted to know about any new menu choices to expect for the fall/winter season. Chef Juan reveals that in addition to the Waygu & Wine special, there’s “our signature Bone-in Kona Crusted Dry-Aged NY Strip with Shallots.” (Now that’s definitely more reason for us to return to Capital Grille!) SPOTLIGHT ON

CARLY HUGHES OF TV’S AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE By Patricia Canole

ust meeting actress Carly Hughes is an uplifting experience. This gifted Broadway star has migrated to television playing Angela in the fan-favorite and critically acclaimed ABC comedy American Housewife now in its 4th season.

Carly Hughes ©Jenny Anderson

But before she was making TV audiences laugh, she was wowing audiences with her voice on Broadway. Carly has appeared in eight Broadway shows, most recently starring as Velma Kelly in Chicago, the Leading Player in Pippin, and Lucille/Shirley of the Shirelles in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Her other Broadway credits include The Book of Mormon, Ghost: The Musical, Ragtime, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. We sat down with Carly to learn a little more about this native of Columbus, Maryland—listed one of best places to live in the U.S. She’s fun, spontaneous, caring and, yes, an amazing talent. You can hear the joy in her voice, and that makes her not only someone you want to watch but also someone you want to know. Tell us about growing up in Columbia, Maryland. It was awesome! It’s a beautiful part of Maryland, with so much diversity. Especially in the school system. I felt very lucky to grow up in a city that couldn’t help but to be diverse, accepting, and that had such a decisive hand in shaping my life. When did you come to realize you wanted an acting/entertainment career? I could sing probably before I could talk! I grew up initially thinking I wanted to be a singer. Then in 5th grade, I did my first school play, Robin Hood—and was bitten by the acting bug. Does a sense of humor run in your family? Were you a funny kid? Does it ever! My mom and my dad are both goofballs and can find the humor in almost anything. I grew up laughing a lot! I don’t know if I was a funny kid, but I’m sure I thought I was! 74 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

For those who don’t know American Housewife, describe what this hit TV show is all about. What is your character Angela like? The wealthy town of Westport, Connecticut, is full of cookie-cutter mommies and their seemingly perfect offspring, but the members of the Otto family, along with Angela and Doris, can’t be counted among them. Angela is the straight-talking, compassionate best friend. She has two kids, is divorced, and is enjoying life as a single parent. You, Katy Mixon and Ali Wong make for an entertaining comedy trio! What is it like playing opposite of them? Do they challenge you? Thank you! We genuinely crack each other up and have so much fun on set! Always laughing together and at each other and making jokes. We each bring a different tone and a different element of comedy to the table, and it makes for some funny scenes. Before TV, it was Broadway. Was it your dancing talents that led to the Broadway stage? Singing and acting actually did. I am a dancer, but I wasn’t dancing in any of my Broadway shows for a while. I was always in a singer track and understudied one of the leads. I finally got to spread my dancin’ wings in Pippin and Chicago, and it felt so good. For those who don’t know about The Princess Grace Award, can you describe what it is, and how has it helped you? It’s a huge honor. The Princess Grace Foundation–USA is dedicated to elevating extraordinary emerging artists in theater, dance, and film via awards in the form of grants, scholarships, and fellowships. The awards program continues the legacy of Princess Grace by advancing excellence in the arts in America. The Special Award, along with the scholarship I received from PGF-USA, gave me the added confidence that I was on the right path, and doing what I was meant to do in this life.

Tell NYL readers all about your roles on Broadway? Do you have a favorite? Two of my most favorite roles are The Leading Player in Pippin and Velma Kelly in Chicago. The Leading Player challenged me in ways I never knew possible and made me rise to every occasion, both physically and mentally. It stretched my talent to the lengths they had needed to go. And Velma is a cherished role I’ve always wanted to do! Who are some of your favorite stage performers? There are so many! I love watching Valerie Pettiford, who is such a temptress on stage! Lin Manuel always brings so much heart to every performance. Megan Hilty, yes, she’s my best friend, but she’s just so dang talented and charismatic! Patina Miller, definitely her stage presence is powerful. I never really got to see her on stage a lot because I was always in my own shows, but I recently had the opportunity to see her play the Witch in Into The Woods. She was magical! Now that you’ve been seen on the Broadway stage and TV screen, is there one you prefer? I mean, there’s nothing like a live performance. The energy from the audience, the no take-backs aspect of it all—you can’t beat it! Everything you see live on stage can never be seen again. Each performance is unique, and every show is different, even if just by the tiniest bit. However, there’s fun on TV! You get to play more and try new things on the spot. And there’s always a retake. How did you win the role of Angela on American Housewife? I auditioned! It was opening night of my last show in NYC, and I ran to ABC between rehearsal and the show to do so. I did two scenes, ran back to the theater opening. I did a tape with casting, and they sent it to ABC network and the executives. About two weeks later, I was flown to LA for a screen test! I then waited about another week to find out that I got the job. I found out as I was getting off the A train in NYC, and I just started crying and screaming and dancing right there in the street! New Yorkers need to know how Carly Hughes gets to relax? Ha! Not often. But when I do, it is glorious. I’ve become fond of getting a massage to release tension and relax. I always love going to the movies and watching them at home. I also love cooking, especially for friends or reading a good book under a soft blanket. What is your dream project? I would love to do a biopic film or miniseries. There are some amazing women whose life stories are so intricate and exciting. I’d love to dive into Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, and Josephine Baker. Are you working on any other projects? I recorded a few songs last year that I’m in the process of finalizing. I am looking forward to releasing them. •

ON THE BIG SCREEN By Jenny Peters

PREQUELS AND SEQUELS JOKER Rated: R The Joker has had a long and illustrious career, being played by everyone from Cesar Romero to Jack Nicholson to Heath Ledger and Jared Leto as the Batman’s arch-nemesis. Now threetime Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix dons the frightening mask that defines this iconic character to tell the Joker’s origin story in this prequel. Directed by Todd Phillips, who is best known for his comedies (The Hangover, Old School) this one is not played for laughs. MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL Not yet rated Angelina Jolie returns to the big screen in this Maleficent sequel, reprising her role as the evil sorceress of Sleeping Beauty fame. Elle Fanning is back as well, as Princess Aurora, in this fantastical fantasy flick that adds Oscar nominees Michelle Pfeiffer and Chiwetel Ejiofor into this sequel’s mix. It’s chockablock with eye-popping special effects, along with Jolie and Pfeiffer vying to see who chews up more of the scenery. What’s not to love? ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP Not yet rated It’s taken them ten years, but those tongue-in-cheek zombie killers are coming back to the big screen. Everyone’s back—Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin and even Bill Murray (as Bill Murray)—in this comical sequel to the 2009 goofball comedy. With director Ruben Fleisher and screenwriter Rhett Reese also back for more, it’s the same silly sensibility as the original, which means it’s tons of fun—in a ghoulish kind of way, of course.

THE FUTURE IS NOW GEMINI MAN Rated: PG-13 Will Smith stars twice in this dizzying flick about a trained assassin who discovers that he’s been cloned – and his double is out to get him. While that might sound like a run-of-the-mill actioner, when you add in two-time Oscar-winning director Ang Lee at the helm and screenwriter David Benioff of Game of Thrones fame, this one has a pedigree that cannot be denied. 76 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

LUCY IN THE SKY Rated: R Oscar-winner Natalie Portman stars as astronaut Lucy Cola, who heads into the great beyond on a space mission that irrevocably changes her life-as well as her perspective on being back on earth. Jon Hamm, Dan Stevens, Ellen Burstyn and Tig Notaro co-star in this otherworldly movie directed by Noah Hawley, the Emmy Award-winning writer-creator of the Fargo television series.

THE OSCAR CHASE BEGINS THE CURRENT WAR Rated: PG-13 Fellow former Oscar nominees Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road and Nocturnal Animals) go toe-to-toe in this fascinating biopic. It follows the real-life rivalry between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, as both inventors came up with electrical systems that changed the world. Nicolas Hoult co-stars as Nikolai Tesla and Tom Holland, Matthew Macfayden and Katherine Waterston also appear in this historical drama. DOLEMITE IS MY NAME Rated: R Eddie Murphy bursts back on the scene with this comic homage to one of the 1970s black cult heroes, Rudy Ray Moore. Moore made the “Blaxploitation” genre his own, starring in a series of flicks as Dolemite, a pimp with the gift of gab. Moore also put out comedy albums as the character and performed as a singer and rapper along the way. His raunchy style is a perfect fit for Murphy, whose own stand-up career was influenced by Moore’s well-known persona; insiders are already saying this might be Murphy’s ticket to finally winning an Academy Award after almost 40 years as an A-list movie star. PAIN AND GLORY Rated: R Oscar-winning Spanish writer-director Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film is a semiautobiographical tale about a successful, yet neurotic, film director’s messed-up life. With longtime collaborator Antonio Banderas in the lead role (for which he won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival) and Oscar winner Penelope Cruz along for the bumpy ride, this Spanishlanguage movie is poised as a strong contender for Oscar’s Best Foreign Film. PARASITE Not yet rated Another strong early contender for Best Foreign Film is Joon-ho Bong’s Parasite, which beat out Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory for the top Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. It’s a dark comedydrama that has been taking festivals around the world by storm, pitting a lowincome family against a wealthy one with some very creepy results. ON THE SMALL SCREEN By Jenny Peters

DYSFUNCTIONAL LIVES ALMOST FAMILY FOX Oscar-winner Timothy Hutton returns to the small screen with this wigged-out comedy-drama about a fertility doctor who used his sperm to impregnate dozens of women. Things get weird when his daughter (played by Brittany Snow) discovers that she’s got two sisters from other mothers. Megan Echikunwoke and Emily Osment co-star in this ongoing tale of family discovery. CATHERINE THE GREAT HBO She was the Empress of Russia for the last 30 years of the 1700s, which makes Catherine the Great an intriguing historical character. But it’s her private life that is truly fascinating, for she was openly sexual and, after overthrowing her husband to take the throne, she had numerous lovers. This HBO miniseries stars the wonderful Helen Mirren as Catherine, while Jason Clarke takes on the role of Grigory Potemkin, one of her more important paramours. This one’s sure to be a juicy ride! EL CAMINO: A BREAKING BAD MOVIE Netflix Attention Breaking Bad fanatics, your wish has been granted! The show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, is back with the movie that continues the story of Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul, who won three Emmys for his work in the show). And while Walter White and his screwed up family are gone, Jesse is still very much in the game, as he escapes from prison and goes on the lam. Fans will regret only one thing about this sequel - that it is only a two-hour movie, not a whole new follow-up series. LIVING WITH YOURSELF Netflix Paul Rudd stars in this limited series about a guy whose life isn’t going so well, that is until he visits a very special wellness-spa. Weird things happen to him at this transformative place, leading to the ultimate in dysfunctional living. His wife and coworkers cannot figure out what happened to him—and he can’t either. Living with Yourself is a mind-bending comedic look at selfimprovement gone very, very wrong. 78 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

BIG APPLE CIRCUS THRILLS, CHILLS & SO MUCH MORE! By Lisa B. Lewis

ig Apple Circus believes that celebrating all abilities creates limitless possibilities. Worldrenowned for its intimate and artistic style, Big Apple Circus is passionate about revitalizing the circus for modern-day audiences with unique and astounding human feats by performers with incredible real-life stories. A New York Times Critic’s Pick every year since its re-emergence in 2017, it continues a long-standing tradition of inclusivity, highlighting the most exceptional talent from around the globe. This year’s thrilling spectacular begins performances October 12, 2019, through February 2, 2020.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Big Apple Circus was the brainchild of Paul Binder and Michael Christensen in 1977. From the very beginning, inclusion was its primary mission. The original show included the New York School for Circus Arts, Inc. 1987 brought the first performance of Circus of the Senses, a show enhanced with live audio description for the Blind. Paul Binder and legendary radio host Marty Glickman were the very first Audio Describers. The name changed to Big Apple Circus Ltd. in 1988. The idea of creating a circus school/one-ring stemmed from their experience in France, where they had performed as a comedy juggling act in 1975 with the circus of the legendary Annie Fratellini.

Dupla Mao Na Roda Balancing Act

80 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

They fell in love with the circus. A circus in its original concept: intimate, artistic, theatrical, as opposed to the three-ring most Americans were used to. Binder thought that such a human-scale spectacle, where the performers’ artistry was more important should have a place in his hometown of New York City. Big Apple Circus gave its first performance in July 1977, under a small Big Top located on a Manhattan landfill that was to become Battery Park City. New Yorkers loved it! 2019-2020 marks its 42nd season and is set to celebrate human talent in the concrete jungle like never before! Initially founded in 1977, with ups and downs over the past few years, it’s back with a bang at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. The one-ring two-act spectacle offers thrills for all ages, in an intimate Big Top where no seat is more than 50 feet from the performers, no wild or exotic animals, and community outreach is a priority.

LET THE SHOW BEGIN

There’s undoubtedly lots of wonder and magic at the Big Apple Circus this year. The all-new cast of performers was single-handedly chosen as much for their astonishing talent as they were for their unique backstories and ability. Led by a trailblazing, Afro-Latina female ringmaster Storm Marrero, are the inspiring, super-hero acts along with some extraordinary New Yorkers. Look for strongmen Alan Pagnota and Rafael Ferreira in Dupla Maoi Na Roda who never fail to amaze in their unforgettable routine highlighting breathtaking feats; the New York premiere of America’s Got Talent finalists Savitsky Cats, consist of Svitlana, Marina, and Misha—and their ten adorable and wildly talented housecats; and after traveling the world and entertaining audiences in six languages, New York-comedian Amy Gordon returns to her favorite city. But there’s plenty more. Once you’ve seen The Aliev Troupe, you’ll be mesmerized with their aerial maneuvers. The internationallyacclaimed acrobats are masters of the unique combination of Aerial Casting, Russian Barre, and Trapeze; the Trick Riders Caleb Carinci & Renny Spencer, and their horses, Boaz and Cupola are ready, willing, and able to take NYC commuting to new heights; and Big Apple Circus fan-favorite who also has the fastest feet north of FiDi, is the fantastic 79-year-young comedic acrobat Hovey Burgess. We’ll also mention he’s an NYU and Julliard Professor too. And more New Yorkers only means more fun and thrills. Meet the hire-wire act Lopez Troupe, who have much more energy than even Times Square tour guides; and the darling Duo Strap act—featuring Maryna Tkachenko and Tetiana Yudina—gives a whole new meaning to straphangers; for the wildest ride in New York City, it’s not the cab on Third Avenue, but Jayson Dominguez who dominates his Wheel of Death; and another proud New Yorker is the multi-talented Kyle Driggs who can probably juggle more than the average city slicker. SPECIAL EXTRAS

One of the primary goals of the Big Apple Circus is to engage people on a human level, away from the technology which envelops our everyday lives. Nothing can compare to experiencing the circus in person. To see these fantastic feats less than 50 feet away, to speak to the performers, and to stimulate every single one of your senses provides memories for a lifetime. Big Apple Circus always has honored and valued differentiated experiences. This year, the circus is celebrating each one with gusto. In addition to a spectacular season, they are offering 18 reducedprice performances ($10-$15) during school hours to share the joy with students of all means. This includes a complete CORE/ STEAM study guide. There are two performances for those with sensory needs; Big Apple Embraces Autism. One for schools; as well as families (check the Big Apple Circus website for dates). These shows include a professionally staffed calming area, caring volunteers, modified lights and sound, and a social story free with your tickets. Big Apple Circus is the only circus in the world to offer Circus of the Senses! A performance which includes ASL, Live Audio description, both a pre- and post-show touch experience, Braille, and large print programs and tons of extra attention for all. For one night only, Big Apple Circus presents Dinner and Show in the Dark, where audience members are asked to don blindfolds and enjoy the show through descriptive audio headsets. Enjoy the enhanced perspective formerly only enjoyed by the Blind. The evening includes a full three-course meal and a complete touch tour. You will be amazed at how much your other senses are enhanced when given a chance. For more information on Big Apple Circus, visit bigapplecircus. com. For tickets go to Ticketmaster.com. HOW TWO FORMER CBS EXECS CREATED A POPULAR PODCAST By Adam Morgan

ho knew that gossipy, mid-day phone conversations between two professional besties could generate listeners? Such is the situation with former CBS communication pros Beth Feldman and Jeremy Murphy. The two, who worked together for five years in the network’s storied Black Rock headquarters, always enjoyed talking regularly by phone and sharing their opinions and perspectives about, well, anything. Out of this came the question: you think others want to listen? With Beth’s stand-up quality, tell-it-like-it-is humor and Jeremy’s causticstyle wit, they started to broadcast their conversations with a weekly podcast called The Giggle. Since launching they’ve steadily grown their audience to include friends and colleagues, members of the media, and random listeners who like to hear a funny talk between friends. New York Lifestyles sat down with the two to figure out why The Giggle has so many giggling. How did this all start? Beth: When we worked together at CBS, where the required weekly staff meeting with our boss was called “The Gaggle.” After each meeting, we’d go back to my office for “The Giggle” where we’d joke about what happened in the meeting and complain about our jobs. Eventually, we both struck out on our own, but wanted to recapture some of that banter we had during those days and so The Giggle was reborn as a podcast. Jeremy: We had both left our jobs but always stayed in touch, and we’d have these laugh-out-loud conversations about everything from media, entertainment, and former colleagues we hated. Beth is beyond ahead of the curve when it comes to building and growing new platforms, and suggested we share our talks with others. Out of that came The Giggle.

Beth & Jeremy.

How would you describe it? Beth: It’s a conversation driven podcast that tackles the latest headlines of the week, entertainment news, travel stories, and what’s happening in our lives that has either ticked us off or made us laugh. We get our ideas from what we’re watching, reading and experiencing in our own lives. Our work experiences change from one day to the next: One minute we’re covering a photo shoot, the next we’re at a gala. That’s really fun. The good news is, we have each other to commiserate with and to offer advice or a diversion when work gets a bit frustrating. Jeremy: What’s great about The Giggle is that the conversation can go anywhere. We always have a broad sketch of what we want to talk about and are guided by an unscripted conversation. For example, we had renowned astrologer Virginia Bell on the podcast, and while we talked horoscopes and signs, we spent time talking about her youth in Italy and this La Dolce Vita lifestyle she led as a young woman coming of age in Rome. It was fascinating. We could have talked for hours. Who have been your favorite guests? Beth: Gossip columnists Rob Shuter and Ben Widdicombe, publicist extraordinaire Judy Twersky, and former New York Times

marketing columnist Stuart Elliott. Whenever we get to speak to super smart guests with a sarcastic sense of humor, the hour flies by and we find ourselves laughing out loud most of the time. Jeremy: When we want to get serious and talk politics and media, we have Luis Miranda of Ambassador Public Affairs. He was my roommate in college and worked in the White House, and he has keen insights and observations about what’s going on in the world. What’s next? Beth: I’d like to start booking celebrity guests and newsmakers. It would be fun to speak to some of the people we giggle about all the time. We promise not to be mean though—we are the nicest hosts. Jeremy: For The Giggle, I’d like to get it in studio and do something with SiriusXM. We have been taping from different locations, which is fun as well. We did an episode at The Carlyle and talked with their Communications Director Jennifer Cooke, who gave us behind-the-scenes nuggets from the Always at the Carlyle documentary. That was awesome. ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER TIME FOR BREAST CANCER CHANGE By Efrat Roman

come from a long dynasty of women affected by breast cancer. My grandmother, her four sisters, my mother, and I were all diagnosed with breast cancer “thanks” to our BRCA gene mutation. I was 9 when my grandmother was diagnosed. I remember her losing her hair and wearing headscarves— it left a mark on my childhood and growing up. When my mother was diagnosed, I was a teenager. At the time, being diagnosed with breast cancer was practically a death sentence, and mastectomies were the protocol. Lumpectomies were starting to be considered, so my mother insisted on itagainst her doctors’ recommendations. Breast cancer followed me around for years until it finally caught up with me when I was diagnosed at 40. I went through a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, which failed, and then had another five surgeries. I couldn’t do the sixth and opted for a tattoo on my chest instead. 84 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

SharkUpNation startup competition in NYC

THE ROAD TO NORMALCY Nearly 83 percent of women with breast cancer have had PTSD symptoms between the time of diagnosis and starting treatment, which is typically the time surgeries are performed. When I discovered this, it shocked me at first. But that was because I hadn’t entirely accepted my trauma. I was part of that percentage; I knew why they had PTSD symptoms because I had them too. Waking up in the hospital bed and experiencing your new body for the first time with the current standard of care (or lack thereof) is traumatizing. Physical recovery is hard. We wake up with drains coming out of our armpits, pain, huge scars, limited mobility, you name it! For many women, and me, the harder recovery is the mental one— and it leaves invisible scars and trauma. I woke up covered with dressings improvised from all kinds of bandages and tape. I wore a reusable post-op compression bra, and not a single one of them was designed for me or my post-op needs. Recovering at home was a nightmare. The reusable bras became soiled and washing them was humiliating. Lifting my arms to change was impossible, and I needed help. My mother was there for me, and I am thankful for that. But I began thinking this couldn’t possibly be the standard of care. With so many breast procedures performed annually, there must be some breast dressing designed for breasts post-op. I searched, I spoke to the community and medical professionals and realized there was nothing. The solution I thought of was so simple.

RECOVER WITH DIGNITY

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

EZbra was born after a long journey involving in-depth research, R&D developments, and the challenges of building a medical device company from the ground up. I discovered challenges along the way—like trying to present a medical device for women to mostly male investors, but nothing was going to stop me.

There is no question that awareness is essential. Thanks to breast cancer campaigns, women everywhere are getting checked, and early detection saves lives. This October, we want to do more than raise awareness. We want to make a real change in the lives of patients. For those who wish to help, visit the EZbra website, choose a breast cancer organization they support, and make a purchase. In turn, we will send those EZbras to the organization as well as a donation of 10 percent of the unit price of $30.

It was designed for post-op use and is made to allow more easy application by the patient and caregivers. It’s absorbent while being very light, soft, and breathable; it can be adjusted separately on each side to fit most shapes and sizes. All this is done without any adhesive or latex, which eliminates the risk of allergic reactions and medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSI). I was set on making a change in women’s healthcare that was a challenge in and of itself. But it was not the only one. To find potential investors, I found myself presenting the physical and emotional aspects of this disease, a process that included graphic post-op images. It was a learning process, and I found amazing women investors who believed in EZbra and understood that this was a necessary and much-needed change. And it worked!

The ground is moving, and it can no longer be ignored—we won’t let it. I invite you to be a part of this revolution and help millions of women around the world by improving the standard of care as they recover from breast surgery. -ER

MY NEW YORK STORY MARK GRGURIC: THE IMAGE SHAKER By Bailey Beckett

ark Grguric is one of the most promising young visual artists in multi-platform media. His exquisite eye and intuitive understanding of lighting, composition and form has distinguished him as up and coming in photography. Inspired by artists like Guy Guibourdin, Ernst Haas and Brassai, Grguric’s versatility allows for a free-form, follow-the-moment style of shooting that goes beyond any perception or pre-set narrative to reveal in-the-moment action, emotion and storytelling. He is regularly hired by brands like CocaCola, Peloton, SmartWater and H&M, among others, as well as for editorial and privately commissioned works. A native of Frankfurt (where his father was based as part of the US military), Grguric studied at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He is currently based in New York. He talked to New York Lifestyles about his inspiration, aspirations and influences.

When it comes to my personal work, I simply love capturing beautiful moments, the beauty in humanity. 86 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

Mark Grguric

Why photography? I originally was into music and went on tour photographing a band when I was 18 years old and fell in love with photography from that point forward. I didn’t consider it an actual career until I was around 20. What is your aesthetic? I would say my aesthetic across the board, regardless of the nature of the work I am making from advertising fashion to beauty, is to figure out a way to add a surreal element to a natural environment, usually by playing with light and reflections within a space. When it comes to my personal work, I simply love capturing beautiful moments, the beauty in humanity. Do you have a niche? I would say that I am very technically skilled across the board for both still life and lifestyle. However, I understand that’s a little general. In a perfect world I’d love to be shooting commercial fashion and advertising of any kind. Tell us what inspires you most. Color, abstract concepts and new ideas! Reflections, multiple elements being used to capture and image or video. A lot of experimentation.

Mark Grguric

How do you get people comfortable in front of the camera? Mostly with a very personable vibe and clear communication of what we are trying to achieve on the day of production. Also playing music and keeping the energy up What’s the best part about shooting in New York? really helps! People are straightforward and professional. If you’re honest and try and execute a shoot the What kind of photography do you prefer? I personally love black and white photography. However, for my own personal work, right way and you don’t have a big budget, people will work with you! Also, there are places in New I prefer vibrant colors and abstract concepts when I get to produce them. York City where you can find anything under the sun including equipment and props. You have no idea the bizarre troubles and logistical issues I’ve had in other places to find a beach cart or a 12x12 piece of white acrylic. Pieces that are so very inexpensive, but so pivotal to the success and seamless flow of a shoot. Tell us your best location for a shoot. It’s hard to pinpoint a specific location in New York as the best place because of the fact that each different shoot calls for a different vibe. My personal favorite is in Greenpoint where there’s very little foot traffic and beautiful mixture of classic Brooklyn homes combined with industrial architecture around every corner. Plus, the restaurants are amazing for sourcing food for crew and the bars are perfect for drinks after the shoot. What are the biggest challenges? I’d say the biggest challenge that I’ve had to accept is embracing people for who they are and not who I’d like them to be. You work with all kinds of people in this industry. The biggest difficulty is that the ones who are the most talented are the ones who are the most introverted and reserved. It would be nice to have introverted photographers and lighting designers around more often. But they tend to spend more time in the studio than in social environments.

Favorite Place To Photograph: “Greenpoint where there’s very little foot traffic and beautiful mixture of classic Brooklyn homes and industrial architecture.”

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years? Hopefully running a successful creative production company and traveling around producing shoots for hotels and design spaces on the business side. As far as my photography career, hopefully figuring out my niche and really exploring that market! For more information on Mark Grguric, visit markgrguric.com. •

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL NEW YORK MORE REASONS TO LOVE THIS PLACE By Bailey Beckett

ven with a skyline that grows more crowded (enough already, developers!) one cannot miss The Four Seasons Hotel New York. The I. M. Pei-designed building soars over the sky of the Upper East Side (and a tad of Midtown). The 52-floor luxury property has housed the Four Seasons for almost 20 years, and in that time has set the standard for five-star hospitality.

The flagship of the esteemed hotel brand began showing its age a few years back, but a recent $120 million renovation restored the property to its former glory. The transformation is made even more special with its piece-de-resistance: the Ty Penthouse, a $30,000-a-night suite offering a birds-eye view of Manhattan (and beyond!). “I traveled around the world to select the finest fabrics, exotic stone surfaces, and furnishings,” said owner Ty Warner, also the creator of the Beanie Babies empire. “I have taken inspiration from my travels and created a seamlessly designed oasis fit for the most luxury-conscious travelers.” Witness handmade king-sized lighted-pedestal beds that appear to float above the ground; furnishings made from rare Japanese tamo ash, cerused oak and bespoke fabrics; distinctive English sycamore wood-paneling. Don’t overlook the lizard gold and Chabata wallcoverings; and custom-woven, 100 percent wool carpets, and handknotted rugs that lend the living spaces an intimate yet elegant feel.

THE FEEL OF A PRIVATE RESIDENCE

That passion extends to the entire hotel, which features 17 studios, 286 junior suites, as well as 57 with one- and twobedrooms and five specialty rooms. All offer oversized windows that offer sweeping panoramic views of Manhattan and an abundance of natural light. The rooms also feature striking, custom-designed ziggurat ceilings with variable lighting, and when the sun sets, brightness can be adjusted to suit the mood. Add in luxurious Italian Breccia Oniciata marble in the bathrooms, which come with oversized deep-soaking tubs, remote-controlled mirrored televisions and Bvlgari amenities. The rooms also include oversized walk-in English sycamore closets with a separate make-up area, curved 65-inch and curved 55-inch HD televisions, and original artwork to evoke the feeling of a posh private residence. One of the biggest lures to the Four Seasons is its lobby Ty Bar, stylish, soaring lounge designed with art deco inspiration, the bespoke cocktail menu of classics from the 1920s and 30s and craft beers. Ty Bar recently began serving afternoon tea, a boozy twist to the tradition with tea-inspired cocktails, Louis Roederer Brut Champagne and caviar, and two flavored offerings: sweet (vanilla scones with clotted cream and strawberry rhubarb jam, brown sugar panna cotta with raspberry gelee, chocolate hazelnut napoleons, vanilla cream profiteroles, lemon tart with lemon basil meringue) and savory (smoked salmon roulade with osetra caviar, organic egg brioche, organic chicken Waldorf, fig and prosciutto with brie, cucumber watercress with Chef ’s aioli).

THE ULTIMATE LUXURY

My favorite experience though was the L. RAPHAEL Spa from the internationally renowned skincare brand (and its namesake, Ronit Raphael). The 4,500 square foot spa is heaven personified, offering guests serenity in the form of custom massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, and hair care services. The brand is most famous for its “Oxygen,” “Ultra-Gravity,” and “Beauty Diamond” treatments, which can cost as much as $1,600 (so worth it!). The company revolutionized the art of skincare with its LEC-40 lipid complex, which can be found in all its products (which are for sale). Bailey indulged in a bespoke massage, followed by an Oxygen facial. And as of writing this, one week later, I still look fab. Even better than usual. RESCUE DOGS ROCK NYC LEAVING NO PUPS BEHIND By Elizabeth Elston

escue Dogs Rescue NYC is a not for profit animal rescue charity founded in 2015, which relies solely on donations and fundraising to help animals in need. The charity has, to date, saved over 4,500 animals. Co-founders Jackie O’Sullivan and Stacey Silverstein started the rescue to protect abused and at-risk dogs from kill shelters and provide vetting services and ultimately loving homes. After a successful career in sales and marketing, Jackie O’Sullivan left CONCRETE PLANS corporate America to pursue her dream of working with and helping animals. Jackie began volunteering at the Animal Care Centers of NYC and eventually went on to work with another large NYC rescue. Jackie was a managing partner for three years at the rescue where she worked with Stacey Silverstein, who also was a managing partner and volunteer at the Animal Care Centers of NYC. Stacey is a practicing attorney in New York, who had the mission of helping and saving the neediest of dogs and being the voice for the voiceless. Jackie and Stacey’s dreams became a reality when they founded Rescue Dogs Rock NYC in March of 2015.

92 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s goal is to raise awareness of the evergrowing plight of homeless animals in the United States, in shelters as well as those abandoned in the streets. Working to educate about the considerable potential these animals have as family pets is one of the critical issues Rescue Dogs NYC is trying to tackle. There are way too many fantastic animals that are euthanized every day just because they are homeless. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC seeks to educate that these animals are not damaged goods or unworthy, but can be fostered into wonderful family pets. Sadly, the abuse, neglect, cruelty, and medical cases cost shelters the most money and often are the first animals to euthanize. “We believe that no injured or abused animal should lose its life simply due to lack of funds. We rely on volunteers, fosters, and adopters to take the animals into their home and provide them with proper care and a nurturing environment,” said Jackie. All animals are vaccinated, heartworm tested, micro-chipped, and behavior altered. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC thoroughly screens all homes, fosters, and adopters, by references, interviews with applicants, and a home visit to ensure the home. And so with a successful last year, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC will host their 2nd Annual Gala this month on October 22nd at 583 Park Avenue, New York City. The gala will raise funds and awareness to help animals in need and will be co-chaired by Georgina Bloomberg and Lara Trump. Robin Lathrop of By Robin will produce the event. Rescue Dogs Rescue NYC is currently working on developing its first adoption and rehabilitation center on Long Island. The new center will allow them to save many more dogs in need of rescue. TIME OUT WITH…MICKY DOLENZ PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE By Darren Paltrowitz

illions of music fans first learned about Micky Dolenz as the drummer (and sometimes lead vocalist) of The Monkees. But almost ten years before that, Dolenz was a working actor, notably starring as “Mickey Braddock” in the television show Circus Boy. In turn, Dolenz has been working steadily for over 60 years, which ought to say a lot about the guy’s multigenerational appeal.

“I was born in a showbiz family, a very down to earth showbiz family,” began Dolenz. “My father was an actor/singer off the boat from Italy, and my mom was from Austin, Texas, who left for Los Angeles to be an actress. They met while doing a play and got married. We lived out in the Valley on a ranch with horses and gardens—and so down to earth.”

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

So where did his ambition come from to pursue a career in the arts? “I was following in my father’s footsteps. My earliest memories were going with him and watching him be an actor. My first screen test, I was six years old. Even before Circus Boy,” he explained. How exactly did that screen test happen, you ask? “I think it was my father’s agent who suggested I test for a role in an upcoming movie. I said, yes. I don’t ever remember being pressured in any way, but that was my first screen test.” As Micky Dolenz has regularly performed and worked in New York, I asked how often he gets back to Manhattan. “I lived in New York for the best part of the year or two when I was doing Aida, the Elton John musical, and then I was a morning DJ at CBS-FM,” recalled Dolenz, referring to his work as the last morning show host of the radio powerhouse before it became 101.1 Jack FM in 2005. “My wife is from Philly, and all of her family’s there. Today, my two children are in the D.C. area. And, yes, I have grandchildren. So you see, I do spend a lot of time in this area.” I pointed out to Dolenz that his family is a rarity—like the Barrymores and the Nelsons—in having three generations of entertainers since two of his daughters have gone into the entertainment world. “That’s true,” he answered. “Ami has done very well. Then my youngest daughter from another marriage, Georgia, is an actress, producer and director. She has a short film that just got accepted into Vail Film Festival that she wrote, produced, and starred in.” OCTOBER 2019 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 95

THE MONKEES AND BROADWAY

Reflecting further on his musical upbringing, Dolenz discussed studying classical guitar. “My first instrument of choice was Spanish classical guitar, and I was okay for a 10- or 12-year-old kid.” It was early rock and roll that helped him land his role in The Monkees. “My audition piece was ‘Johnny B. Goode’ by Chuck Berry. I didn’t do any vocal training at the time—I just naturally sang.” Added Dolenz: “It wasn’t until I started doing Broadway when my manager said, ‘You really should start taking some vocal lessons and learn to breathe. I’m glad I took her advice because it helped, mostly when you’re not feeling great and under the weather.” Dolenz, a multi-instrumentalist, is still notably singing in top form these days, 15 or so years following his Aida run. I asked him if this is due to genetics or taking care of the voice. “Your vocal cords are muscles. Little tiny muscles that look a little bit like guitar strings. So there is a physicality to it and you can be born with, say, a golfer’s physique or a seven-foot six basketball player’s physique,” he laughed. “You know that nature versus nurture argument. Of course, a few may have the natural gift, but then some have to nurture the talent. Think of it as a sport: You have to train. You have to take care of your body and muscles.”

A FUTURE OF SONG

Looking ahead to the coming months, Dolenz will be performing as part of the It Was Fifty Years Ago Today Tour where he and other legends will be performing The White Album by The Beatles in addition to some other hits. “I’m thrilled and flattered and quite honored to be asked to be part of this tour,” noted Dolenz. “Such incredible talent like Todd [Rundgren] and Christopher [Cross] and Jason [Scheff] and Joey [Molland]—I’m a huge fan of these people. I’m very flattered and honored to be singing with these people.” Looking ahead, Dolenz is already booked well into 2020. “I already have solo dates in 2020. Whether or not [Monkees cofounder Mike] Nesmith and I are going to go out again as [The Monkees Present] The Mike & Micky Show, which we did very successfully, that remains to be seen. But I always have solo shows all year.” So with Micky Dolenz’s past, present and future all looking bright, any last words for the kids, Micky? “My advice for anybody who wants to get into show business, my first bit of advice would be getting a good lawyer.” As gloomy as that sounded, Dolenz insisted that the bright days of entertainment are far from over. “The money follows art; art doesn’t follow the money. Surround yourself with people that are talented and have the same sensibilities. Then with any luck, you’ll get lucky.” • 96 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | OCTOBER 2019
