Yes, Microchips are a great way to identify your pet, but require a trip to a vet or shelter. They should NEVER be the only identification your pet has. PET TRAKR ID tags are readable by the people that matter most when your pet is found. The people who find them.

GOES INSTA-CRAZY SHARES VIDEOS OF ANIMALS DOING THINGS NEW SEASON PREMIERES ON NAT GEO WILD By Lori Zelenko with Samantha Story

ho doesn’t love scouring the internet for adorable pet videos? One of America’s funniest people, comedian, talent show host and now animal antics commentator, Howie Mandel is a self-confessed addict for these joyful captures of pets among us and into the wild. So crazy is he for such pet performances, that he teamed up with Nat Geo WILD to bring your favorite animal videos to the small screen.

Like the Instagram, the show is pure entertainment, but not without some valuable education

Animals Doing Things an ongoing series on Nat Geo Wild, premieres a new season Saturday, June 8th at 9:00 pm with Mandel at the helm, providing his electric commentary and quips! Mandel, known for his work on mega-popular TV shows America’s Got Talent and Deal or No Deal, provides his light-hearted comedy, but the show does also deliver some fascinating facts for viewers. “Like the Instagram, the show is pure entertainment, but not without some valuable education,” says Mandel. The videos that the show receives are sent in by viewers, adding to the show’s extraordinary relatability. “We take what the followers send our way - we take our cues from them.” Animals Doing Things is no star trip for Howie, it’s actually a family affair. Mandel’s love for funny animals stems from his own family’s animal-enthusiasm. Candidly, he says “I can’t tell you the number of animals that have been through our household. Name a species, it has been here,’’ he says with humorous exasperation. But PLM asks, let’s talk about dogs for moment, putting rodents aside even if rodents i.e. rats, hairy we presume, are doing what Howie could call a star turn on AGT this coming season. There are two dogs in his offcamera life, Coco, a Yorkie, and Lola - his wife’s dog - a long-haired chihuahua. Though he loves his family pets, sometimes the love isn’t always reciprocated. “I love Lola, but Lola does not always love me. Yes, we had Cesar Millan come in and try to fix the relationship. He tried.” Says Howie with a sad sigh. If you watch Cesar’s session on The Dog Whisperer, it is, well, sad to say painful. This tiny beast, Lola, just about eats Howie alive. His dog, Coco, on the other hand is another story. “Coco is so calm, if she were a person, she would be a yoga instructor. Namaste. She’s very low-key which is surprising as Yorkies can be fussy and energetic.” Mandel admits, though, that the biggest animal lover in his household is his wife, Terry. His wife has a soft spot for rescuing animals, but he has a different word for what she does. “She calls it ‘rescuing’. I call it ‘taking’. She takes any animal in her path.” Comically he mimics a local wildlife rescue center calling to ask for Mrs. Mandel, he answers the phone to offer to take a message. What does he hear, “We have her crow here. You know the one she found by the side of the road? Just advising we are ready to set I free back into the wild now, it’s healed.” His wife’s passion or animals is a trait passed on to his son, Alex, very much a presence on the Nat Geo show. Says Howie, “Alex is a veritable encyclopedia - he knows every obscure fact about animals. Ask him about a water buffalo, for example, and he will tell you where it is indigenous to, what it eats, how much it weighs - every possible fact.” His son also makes appearances on Mandel’s show, sharing his animal knowledge and love for furry friends with viewers too. Mandel’s household has been the home of many, many animals over the years. He reflects as he looks forward to a season of America’s Got Talent featuring rodents trained into what he equates to a dog act, “We owned a rodent - a rat actually a bald rat. It was my daughter’s. We assumed it was always happy. Until the trainer for the AGT act told me her rats were happy, it never occurred to me that they possibly were not happy. My daughter’s rat spent less time in the cage than in her hand. She carried it around with her all the time. It was hairless, with crinkly skin and lots of lumps, so we called it ‘Lumpy’.” Mandel has in recent years spoken publicly about his OCD and mysophobia (fear of germs). “Though I am a dog-lover, it is a bit of a dichotomy as I am a germaphobe, so I am not a cuddler or a big toucher.” Despite his condition, Mandel expresses the sheer gratitude he has for the pets in his life. “Even if you have had a crappy day you come home and they greet you. Everyone needs a place to escape and immersing yourself in the love of a pet does just that. Just love pure love.” It looks like Mandel’s year is only looking up, as AGT returns May 28th and Deal or No Deal premieres Wednesday, June 12th. Howie’s first solo stand up special in 20 years “Howie Mandel Presents Howie Mandel at the Howie Mandel Comedy Club” is also currently available on digital platforms. Need a fix of funny animal videos to get you through your workday? Then be sure to check out @ AnimalsDoingThings on Instagram and set your DVR for Nat Geo WILD when Animals Doing Things airs June 8th at 9 p.m. •

Duke (Eric Sonestreet) goes head to head with Rooster (Harrison Ford) the coolest farm dog ever in The Secret Life of Pets 2

MODERN FAMILY’S ERIC STONESTREET AND HIS OWN SHAGGY DOG INSPIRE DUKE IN THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 By Samantha Story

e all know him as the eccentric and loveable Cameron Tucker on ABC’s Modern Family and Duke from The Secret Life of Pets now Eric Stonestreet is bringing his character back to the big screen with the upcoming release of The Secret Life of Pets 2. His endearing portrayal of the shaggy rescue dog is a character influenced by the very animals within Eric’s own life. His passion and genuine love for dogs is apparent when it comes to discussing his furry four-legged pals. He took time to chat with Pet Lifestyles Magazine to share highlights from his upcoming movie and the adoration he has for his rescue dog, Roscoe. Roscoe from Wags and Walks Rescue in L.A. has stolen Eric Stonestreet’s heart. He’s earned his own place in the spotlight even appearing as a celebrity guest on TV talk shows.

PLM: Your dog Roscoe came from Wags and Walks Rescue in LA. What made you choose this rescue? I lost my pal of 15 years, Coleman, a year earlier and I knew I would know when I was ready to even consider getting another dog. Around March of that year, I told Wags and Walks to let me know if they ever got a cattle dog/mix breed rescue. I knew them because a wife of a LA Kings player worked with them and I had been following them on Instagram. They sent me a picture of Roscoe (name was ‘Bolo’ then) and when I saw him, I knew I needed to meet him. He was clearly very special even in a picture. He came over to the house and he immediately went and laid where Coleman was put to sleep. I later realized that the day they sent me his picture was the same day I had said goodbye to Coleman. It seemed pretty much like Coleman was letting me know I was ready to open my heart up to another pup. I had a vacation planned and said when I got back, I would take (Bolo.) So, on April 15th he came over for good to be my best PA. PLM: I’m a big fan of Roscoe and I follow him on Instagram! What has been Roscoe’s biggest celebrity moment so far since you adopted him 2 years ago? Well, he’s been on Ellen. That’s pretty big. And He just did some press for The Secret Life of Pets 2. But like me, Roscoe enjoys just being at home in his backyard relaxing with close friends.

JUNE/JULY 2019

PLM: Has Roscoe changed your day to day routine? Not too much. Like with Coleman, I have taught Roscoe the beauty of sleeping in when you can. He’s pretty much on my schedule and is not happy when we have to wake up at 5 a.m. PLM: Does he have any funny quirks or habits? He’s VERY affectionate and makes human noises while getting comfortable. It’s very cute. He’s keenly astute and ready in a moment’s notice for any and everything. His aptitude to learn is very impressive and I wouldn’t be surprised if in a couple years he’s talking and driving a car. But for real he’s a super smart dog. PLM: It’s always refreshing to see a person that just absolutely loves their dog. What has Roscoe taught you about dogs and love in the time you have known him? I never knew how the unrequested affection of a big dog could make you feel so good. Coleman was a little guy and while sweet, not overly cuddly. He had his own agenda. He did things on his terms. But with Roscoe, he will just out of the blue, come over, groan and lay on me. It’s the cutest thing. But it does make my girlfriend a little jealous. But I just look at her and say, “Babe. He was homeless. On the streets. In Pico Rivera. And she says, “Ya. TWO YEARS AGO. Roscoe is doing fine now.”

Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker on MODERN FAMILY with Jesse Tyler Ferguson. A lovable, laughable couple

Duke one shaggy dog in The Secret Life of Pets 2 voiced by Eric Stonestreet known and loved as Cameron on TV’s Modern Family

PLM: Did you rescue Roscoe, or did he rescue you? With both of the dogs I’ve had as an adult there is no doubt they came into my life at really important times. Coleman saw everything with my career. Ups and downs. From a small apartment to a nice house with a nice yard for him. And then with Roscoe, he helped me move on and forward and showed me that my heart was ready for another dog. I’m so thankful he came around when he did. I’m a lucky guy to have him and I’m lucky to have you too, Lindsay!! (I know she’s reading this.) PLM: What would you tell someone considering adopting a dog? Do it. You’ll never regret it. The love you give is repaid 200 times with the love you get. PLM: You play Duke in The Secret Life of Pets and the sequel which will be out on June 7th. Duke is a tough dog with a lot of heart. Where did you find the inspiration for the character you play in Secret Life of pets?

Just growing up around many animals and having Coleman is where the inspiration came from. Duke is a fun-loving fella and how I think most dogs probably are. Just eager and available for whatever. Whenever. PLM: How will Duke’s character evolve in the next movie? Are we in for another fur-raising adventure in the sequel? Well, he’s a parent now. Or so he thinks. So, he’s trying to balance letting go and worry with Liam, his and Max’s ‘son’ it’s an amazing adventure. Even more epic than the first!! And hello!! Harrison Ford! He plays a cool farm dog named Rooster! Rooster is the coolest thing Duke had ever seen and what we all aspire to be. People are gonna love the movie and the heart in it! For more of Roscoe and Eric Stonestreet’s adventures follow them on Instagram @mynameisroscoe and @ericstonestreet. The Secret Life of Pets 2 hits theatres on June 7th. • JUNE/JULY 2019

THE GOTH TEEN OF BEETLEJUICE AND HER PUP PUCCI By Marcy Macdonald

ophia Anne Caruso, wows the Broadway audiences 8 times a week, in the new hit Broadway show, Beetlejuice The Musical. On stage, she’s a pro. At home, her dog, Pucci, readily identifies her as the best dog mom ever but at heart, he wishes she would give it all up to scratch his tummy, full time. A native of Spokane, Washington, she now calls New York her home. That’s where Pucci found me, she says of her 13 year old Shih Tzu. “I love rescue dogs,” she affirms, “and was just visiting the Pink Poodle pet shop there when we met.” It was definitely love at first sight.

the problems of the world. When she and Pucci became a team, she became a “dedicated vegan who believes in a connection to all living things. It’s important, not just for humans. But I became a vegan for the safety of animals and freedom.

“All of the other pups were eating and rolling around and behaving like puppies, but he looked right at me and sat up on his back legs like a groundhog. I swooned. And was instantly sold! Pucci still sits that way to this day!”

I have always felt weird about eating animals. Guilty in fact. I am an empath and it is almost as though I can feel the energetic pain that a ‘food has endured. I say ‘food’ in quotes because that is what people call it but I simply think animals are not food. Our bodies aren’t built to even digest animal products.”

“I’m a huge animal lover, and I’m looking to rescue a pal for Pucci. He’s not that friendly with other animals (not to mention other humans), but I’m certain that I can find him the right girl: I’m trying to find him a lover to fall in love with,” Sophia shares, forever hopeful.

Downtime with her pal Pucci is precious. Together with her pup, Sophia can be found chilling under a tree, flipping the pages of a relevant read or home working on her own writing. Of course, there is always time for a game of tug of war or a leisurely stroll in a nearby park.

Pucci has never been on stage, but “has a lot of character of his own,” Sophia maintains. “He always knows when I’m sad and comes and sits right next to me and licks my hand”. Together they solve

Ask why she thinks it would be good for all of us to have a dog, and she’ll tell you the answer is “limitless love. Dogs will never stop loving you. Even if you’re an unlovable character like Beetlejuice!” •

DOG FRIENDED ME:

HOW JAVICIA LEWIS FOUND TRUE LOVE AND HAPPINESS WITH HER RESCUE DOG, JUDAH By Adrianne Frost

urrently, Javicia Lewis stars in the CBS-TV hit show, “God Friended Me”. She came out to New York from Los Angeles. So, before moving to New York City from California, Javicia had to take care of a few things: 1. Find a place to live 2. Pack 3. Adopt a dog. She wanted to bring a new family member with her to “such a foreign place”. “Also,” she adds, “I was really ready to be a dog mom!” “I adopted Judah for my birthday in May of 2018,” Javicia explains. “Judah is a rescue. The shelter is called Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego, CA.” She is a big fan of the shelter, and says, “They do such a great job there. I love that every night the dogs go to a foster home, instead of being left in the kennels alone.” Judah is also a Pit Bull. Javicia acknowledges that the breed gets a very bad (and unjustified) rap. “I’ve always had Pitbulls and Rottweilers in my life, so I personally have never experienced the negative aspect.” She knows it’s all about the love they get. “I am a strong believer that it’s the way they’re raised. If you raise them with love and socialize them properly, they can be just as soft and lovable as smaller breeds.” New York can be a scary place to be at first. “Living in NYC alone can be a bit scary at first, but having him with me made the move feel safe.” Now, Judah is by her side at all times. “Judah goes EVERYWHERE with me! He comes to work, where he gets to hang with my co stars’ pups,” she says. “I love taking him to the dog park in the morning. For some reason it’s super fulfilling to see him and the other pups run at full speed having the time of their lives.” But being good buddies; they spend plenty of time catching up on TV. “He loves to watch television with me. He sits upright on the couch, kind of like a human, and watches whatever I’m watching. If I have to leave him home alone, I always leave Animal Planet on... he’ll watch it for hours.” And when the tube is tuned to “God Friended Me”, Javicia says Judah is watching! “One day we were

watching God Friended Me, when he heard my voice his ears perked up and he walked closer to the TV and started watching!” “He is really like my child,” Javicia says proudly, “We go everywhere and do everything together.” As an actor, travel is a serious part of the job. “We love traveling,” Javicia excitedly tells us, “He’s a pro at the airport!” Javicia beams as she talks about Judah, “I love that he wears his feelings on his sleeve, I can always tell when he’s emotional about something and he can tell when I’m sad about something. That leads me to his cuddles, and his cuddles are out of this world! To be honest, I knew from the moment I met him that he was special and I had found my fur baby!” “I love Judah,” she says, “but more than anything, I love all animals!!! I feel strongly about doing our part in protecting and enforcing the rights of all animals. This includes living a vegan lifestyle. As an actress, we work long hours so it’s important we constantly maintain clean energy. Giving up all animal products has helped my health and energy as a whole!” Coming up, you can see Javicia Lewis in the romantic comedy film called ‘Always a Bridesmaid’, then she returns to New York to film season 2 of ‘God Friended Me’. In the fall of 2019, she will also be starring in the hit BET series ‘The Family Business’. Expect to see Judah on set! • JUNE/JULY 2019

THE DOG MOM FROM DOWN UNDER AUSSIE SUPERMODEL JESSICA HART By Todd Neikirk

ustralian supermodel, Jessica Hart, and her trademark gap-toothed smile have graced magazine covers of Vogue (multiple editions), Marie Claire, Elle, and GQ. She has also walked for such renowned fashion labels as Louis Vuitton, Dolce Gabbana, Max Mara and Victoria’s Secret. The 240,000 fans of Jessica’s Instagram page will always come across one constant, her pet Yorkie, Floyd. Jessica adopted Floyd 8 years ago and they currently live together in New York . How do the Australian stunner and her buddy do the city together. We hit the park, go to brunch, all the usual bestie stuff, says the supermodel. When they have to get out of the city, Hart says, “I love taking him to the Hamptons, he loves being on the beach.”

Jessica and Floyd so happy together. The supermodel and her Yorkie travel coast to coast jetting between NY and LA in style.

While Jessica is a world-renowned model, she is not the only member of her family with impressive credits. I asked if Floyd likes the limelight? “Yes, Floyd is very photogenic, he’s even been features in American Vogue. Check him out at @ theadventuresoffloyd.” And while he’s never walked on the catwalk alongside Mommy, Hart says that is an item on their shared bucket list. Of course, supermodels must travel all around the world to ply their trade. Does Floyd accompany Jessica on all of her trips? “As much as possible, she says! “In the US, he travels with me between NY & LA, to photo shoots and work. However, it’s tricky to take him when I need to travel internationally, luckily my friends love to look after him when I’m away.” With his adorable appearance and HUGE personality, Floyd doesn’t seem like an easy pup to leave at home. I asked Jessica if her Yorkie accompanies her on photoshoots. She told me, “For the most part I can bring him to most photoshoots, especially if it’s a client and team I’ve been working with for a while. However, I’ve never taken him backstage to a runway show, that would be a little tricky. It’s madness backstage, and he is so tiny.”

Floyd is no stranger to the camera. He’s posed for a fashion mag or two in his career as supermodel Jessica Hart’s BFF.

Some dogs love to dress up in outfits and for others, it’s a bit of an ordeal. Most dogs, however, aren’t globetrotters who have appeared in major fashion magazines. So does Floyd have any couture items that he likes to dress in? “I try to put him in all types of outfits,” says Jessica,”but he prefers his birthday suit.” For Hart, who was born in Sydney and discovered in Melbourne, four-legged friends have always been a way of life. She tells Pet Lifestyles Magazine, “I grew up with a dog, a pug named Toto, I’ve also had a Yorkshire terrier named Charlie. I’ve always had a dog! Floyd is my only pup now though.” In addition to walking catwalks around the world, Jessica is also an entrepreneur. She is the founder of Luma Beauty which specializes in cosmetics products. You can check out her Instagram page at instagram. com/jesshart and of course, you can check out Floyd’s personal page at instagram.com/theadventuresoffloyd. • 14 | PET LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

BIEBER AND GIZELE

FROM THE RUNWAYS OF THE WORLD TO THE DOG PARKS OF NYC WHERE SHE GOES, HE GOES - AND 1 MILLION INSTAGRAMMERS FOLLOW By Todd Niekirk

olo Ralph Lauren, Rebecca Minkoff, Tory Burch and of course, Victoria’s Secret - are just some of the runways Brazilian beauty Gizele Oliveira has graced. Her lovely looks and her love for Bieber, her three-year old Bichon and Havanese mix, not to mention her swimsuit poses on our favorite beaches, have earned her more than a million devoted Instagram followers. Bieber entered Gizele’s life at two months old. Though she genuinely wanted to rescue, it turned out not to be possible given her jet set lifestyle, constantly traveling the globe for shoots and shows. In finding Bieber, Gizele found true love and a travel companion like no other. “I feel like he’s been everywhere with me,” she says with the glowing look of a proud dog mom who applauds her pup’s excellent travel manners. “We’ve been to LA, Miami, San Francisco, Paris, Monaco, Cannes, Brazil, Morocco...His favorite cities are LA and Miami!” When in NYC however, they spend quality time together, doing what every dog mom enjoys doing with their fur kid. After all, supermodels are just like us. “I love taking him for long walks, to dog parks and naturally, cuddling with this baby boy is just the best! I just found out about this dog cafe (borisandhorton.com - downtown NYC) and I definitely need to take him! For sure that will be our favorite spot!” Of course, Bieber’s no stranger to backstage or even being on set. Though, Gizelle sas, “it depends of the client.” Although Bieber being so very cute is distracting, he’s usually welcome when she’s working. Of course, his constant presence begs the question, has he ever walked the catwalk alongside her? “No! I actually really hope it happens one day! He was born to be a star, haha!” Gizele’s love of dogs is a life-long passion. Candidly she reveals, “I got my first dog when I was 11, she’s still alive but super old. Then she had a daughter that was my second dog. Both mini poodles, that’s why I have a poodle tattoo on my arm. They are so important to me!” Runway star supermodel Gizele with Bieber her beloved Bichon mix.

Gizele whose every move is followed by 1 Million instagrammers snuggles up to her beloved Bieber. True love at its finest.

Bieber is naturally a rock star in her book so it’s to be expected that Gizele shares insights in his personality with the true enthusiasm of a crazy-for-my-fur-baby pet parent, “My favorite thing about Bieber is that he’s super sweet to everyone and he loves kids! He gets super excited when he sees a kid, especially a toddler! What else do I love? I love that he is a big fan of cuddling! He’s the best cuddle buddy!”

Fun in the sun Supermodel Gizele and her best buddy Bieber chill out together. Rarely apart these two are totally in sync.

With a world-renowned fashionista as a mom, it’s no wonder Bieber has a fashion sense all his own. He loves the attention being well dressed gets him. Gizele explains, “Bieber is reluctant to put on his jacket until he gets a lot of compliments. Then he’s ok with it.” Is there a fashion label he prefers? Apparently, he loves his costume from Lilo & Stitch. For the latest on Gizele and Bieber’s globetrotting, find the scoop on Instagram @ giizeleoilveira. NICOLE RYAN AND LEO: NOW ON-AIR By Crystal C. Long

ife, Mom, Co-Host, Radio Personality, Reporter, Keynote Speaker – these are just some of the many identifiers to describe Nicole Ryan. Whether jetting off to Vegas for the Billboard Music Awards or being the keynote speaker at the Moms Rock Expo, dynamic radio personality and Co-Host of SiriusXM Hits 1’s The Morning Mash Up Nicole Ryan does it all with an abundance of passion and heart – as well as a sweet little Shih Tzu named Leo by her side on all her adventures (well, when permitting of course). Ryan and Leo’s lifelong friendship started when she got one of the best welcome home presents in her life, “When I returned home from a work trip my husband surprised me with him,” said Ryan (cue the awwws!). And from then on, a lifetime of love, cuddles, and all the joys from being a pet-parent started. “I love how amazing he is with my children and how I never worry about him running away. He’s happiest right by our side! He also is super in tune with my emotions and when I’m stressed or sad he’ll come and snuggle or kiss me to comfort me.” she told Pet Lifestyles Magazine.

Nicole Ryan and Leo, her furbaby, at work.

A star in his own right, Leo lives life in the fast lane – going to work with his mommy, taking care of his human brother and sister, and showering his family with love and kisses, yes, it’s what a dog was born to do, but Leo has some pretty exciting adventures of his own too. One of the perks of having a star radio personality as his mommy is getting the attention of many celebrities – and boy oh boy has Leo met many. “He’s met Miley Cyrus, Chris Hemsworth, Pink, 5 Seconds of Summer and more!” said Ryan. “I couldn’t even get Pink to start the interview ‘cause she was loving on Leo so much! She honestly just wanted to cuddle and mush him and forget our chat we had scheduled!” exclaimed Ryan. Needless to say, Leo is lapping up the attention, “Leo was a big fan of 5SOS who actually requested we have a dog there for the event we did. He took turns sitting on all of their laps and then cried to go back in the studio when they took him out for their performance. So clearly he felt connected to them!” But one of Leo’s favorite adventures is going to the studio with his mommy, and he is indeed the perfect work companion: easy, well behaved, never yaps, and being small enough to sneak into non-dog-friendly places. Of course brightening up Ryan’s days is just another plus, “It’s so sad to leave my babies at home so to be able to bring my furbaby makes that a little easier on those days.” She said.

Nicole and Leo out for a good time.

However, with all of this stardom stuff aside, Leo is just like any other dog and is happiest when right by his humans’ side. As Ryan lovingly stated “Leo loves coming to happy hour with us and sitting outside at restaurants when the weather is nice but his favorite place to be is on the beach laying in the sun!” Yes, Leo is living the dream life, and the love he gives to his human family is fully reciprocated – Ryan and her family’s love for Leo goes to no extent: Ryan even brought her furbaby a dog umbrella. “Poor Leo (like so many dogs) hates the rain...he refuses to go outside when the weather is bad so I decided to buy him a dog umbrella,” chuckled Ryan, “which is basically a leash that has an umbrella on it to keep him dry. He hated it but I tried!” Just like Leo, Ryan is living her dream life with her family of five consisting of Ryan and her husband, Matt; their two oh-soadorable kids, Parker and Keegan; and their sweet and lovable furbaby, who turns six in June! Happy Birthday Leo! For more of Leo-adorableness, follow his adventures on Instagram @leootterman and Ryan’s Instagram at @ mashupnicole. • 16 | PET LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

CREATING COZY CAT QUARTERS ARCHITECT MARIO ARBORE DESIGNS FELINE FANTASIES By Lori Zelenko

ish got to swim. Birds got to fly” and forgive us Jerome Kern, but cats got to climb. Architect Mario Arbore understands this only too well. A pet parent to three cats himself, he found himself pondering the idea of creating scalable “cat houses,” environments where felines could climb, crawl, or curl up depending on their mood. But no ordinary structure would do for his fine fourlegged friends. Before long, his thoughts turned to reality, and a business was born: Square Paws (squarepaws.com), architectdesigned, artisan-crafted cat towers and bespoke residential and commercial installations. He started in 2014 with a vertical orientation. Lighthouses to be precise. From an architectural history standpoint, Arbore delved deep, enjoying himself as he researched the various styles and forms of these structures so prevalent along America’s waterways. He soon found the floodgates opening for more extraordinary flights of fancy. As he says, once he started, the ideas, the imagination-powered vision, led to oversized objects, outrageous in more than one instance. Among the creations, a giant Espresso Pot, a tin of Sardines offering a nesting nook, and the Eiffel Tower. Soon he found himself pushing boundaries and creating even more wonderfully whimsical habitats for furry friends: a Ferris Wheel and a Giraffe with climbable crannies in its neck. 18 | PET LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

JUNE/JULY 2019

Architect and artisan Mario Arbore with one of his cherished felines, the inspiration for his fanciful cat towers. For more on his crazy-creative work, go to squarepaws.com.

His own cats, Bella, Ciccio, and Lana are continuous sources of inspiration, each one unique in their behavior (as all cats are). “They find wonder in so many things,” he observes, cherishing the subtle, intimate way they express affection and noting how some like to “cave” while others like to jump immediately to the highest point of a cat tower. Arbore does maintain, however, that designing for creatures whose very nature is to claw and destroy has its challenges. But he takes that into account, providing dedicated spots for scratching and clawing within his sturdy structures.

Nesting atop a Square Paws Totem Pole brings serenity to this kitty.

Though his work may be grounded, he admits to bringing “crazy” to custom cat towers. Naturally, clients with eccentricities of their own gravitate to his aesthetic. Arbore speaks of one client in Santa Barbara, California, who with his partner has 22 cats. What was Mario’s mission? He started with a custom wine glass envisioned as a cat tower in his client’s signature shades: bright blue, gold, and neon green. A year later came a second request: a cat tower to enable the client’s felines to contemplate the great outdoors, have access to an excellent window view, or watch fish swimming in a fish tank oblivious to their predatory companions. No obvious answer would do here. No Baywatch babes here, just cozy kitties. Nautical inspiration the Square Paws way.

Fit for cats who consider themselves royalty, a Throne that’s outrageously beautiful from Square Paws.

Espuresso gives our feline friends a shot of fun, Square Paws style. This Fun House from Square Paws is truly a flight of fancy.

Mario and the Square Paws team came up with a concept as fanciful as the demand itself, “pretending that the fish tank was spilling out into the room and that the cats themselves would be underwater. As if they were in this submerged habitat. We built a cat boat that was mounted to the center of the ceiling in the room so the kitties could look out the skylight. Then we added a ‘Coral Reef,’ a cat tower with hand-carved fish ‘swimming’ around each elevated cat platform. Unifying the concept was a cat-walk ‘wave’ sweeping from the boat to the reef.” In the scale of things, hard to say who’s crazier here, the client wanting a fantastic feline habitat? Or Mario Arbore for having the verve and imagination to make a dream come true? There are always new projects in the works for Square Paws, each one a joyful exploration leading to unexpected creative and innovative discoveries. Among the cat towers there is no consistent favorite for Arbore. “Each one,” he says, “has their moments.” So what’s next on the horizon for this architect whose own cats must feel like royalty? (After all, he has made a cat tower throne.) Coming soon: a Fun House, a zany kitty play space for sure, and a music-themed sanctuary celebrating an animal-friendly pop artist. All in the name of love for our feline friends. • JUNE/JULY 2019

OLD OR YOUNG YOU CAN TEACH A DOG NEW TRICKS By Larry Kay

og tricks may look like magic, but many tricks are easy to learn when you master a few building blocks. Dog tricks will unleash a dog’s personality and confidence. A paw shake helps a dog become sociable and builds your bond.

Paw Target Training

The Target Is a Training Tool. Beginners and pro movie dog trainers alike use the target to teach many amazing tricks. Once your dog can put her paw on a target, she’ll be ready to learn more tricks. You can place the target on other objects, such as on your hand for a paw shake, on a bell or buzzer that your dog rings when it’s potty time, or on a door to push it closed. You can also train your dog to touch a target with her nose, chin, shoulder, or back foot. Let’s start with paw touches to learn four dog tricks. Get a Target. Use a soft plastic disc, such as a lid from a yogurt container. I also use a buzzer (pictured here). On movie sets we sometimes attach a target to the end of a padded stick. Step 1. Build interest in the target. When you show enthusiasm toward the target, you’ll build your dog’s curiosity. Put a few high-value treats on the target. Each time she shows interest in the target, say “yes!” (or click if your dog knows clicker training). Eventually, when your dog touches the target with her paw, immediately put more treats on it; we call that a “jackpot.” Stay positive and patient as she learns that pawing the target is rewarding. Paw Target Training

Step 2. Teach the target’s meaning. Once your dog paws the target consistently, delay saying “yes” (or clicking) one second so that your dog learns to touch it more deliberately. Use fewer treats and give rewards more selectively for her deliberate paw touches. After every few successes, move the target a few inches to improve her paw-eye coordination. Step 3. Add the cues. Say “Target” each time your dog paws it. As you get into a rhythm of successful paw touches, say “Target” earlier. Eventually, you’ll say “Target” to begin each paw touch, which means you now have a verbal cue for this trick. To add a hand signal, point at the target as you say the cue. Step 4. Generalize it. Each time, move the target a few inches to a new spot. This tells your dog that no matter where the target is, whenever she hears your cue it’s time to paw it.

JUNE/JULY 2019

Step 5. Send your dog to the target. Have your dog sit and stay as you place the target a few feet away from her. Then cue (point and say “Target”) to send her to touch it. Increase the distance a few inches at a time. Congratulations! Your dog has now learned to paw a target. Now you can put the target on a variety of objects.

Ring the Bell

Paw Shake

Paw Shake. Put the target in your hand and cue your dog to touch it. Say “Yes!” and then reward each paw touch. When she targets your hand consistently, it’s time to phase out the target disc by quickly pulling it out of the way (grab it with your other hand), so that her paw lands in your hand. Say the cue “Shake” each time your dog paws your hand. Once she understands the cue, phase out the target and just offer your hand.

Ring the Bell. Tape the target to a strand of jingle bells. Much like teaching the Paw Shake, you’ll shape her efforts to paw at the bells when you cue “Ring the Bell.” Eventually, you’ll remove the target altogether. If your dog seems afraid of the jingling, wrap the bells with a cloth and acclimate her slowly to it as you train this trick.

Close the Door. Tape the target onto a closed door. As your dog paws the target consistently, open the door a bit wider and raise the height of the target. It may take her time to get comfortable with the swinging door, so open it one inch at a time. Eventually, you’ll remove the target. Safety tip: Place the target away from the door’s edge so that your dog doesn’t pinch her paw when it swings shut.

DOGS VS. ICE CREAM THIS SUMMER EVERY PUP’S A WINNER! By FoxyLoxy MacDonald | Photos by Diana Lundin, Dogs vs. Ice Cream, Familius

ome August when celebrity photographer Diana Lundin’s book comes out, ice cream season will be in full swing but one look at the delicious cover image and any self-respecting dog will start drooling right now! And I confess, I count myself among them. And you might ask WHO am I? A Yorkie not yet celebrated enough to be featured in this beautiful book that even makes cat lovers smile, after all they are watching us canines face a battle: can any dog totally devour ice cream before it melts? Some of us - Pitties, Dobermans, Boxers, Dalmatians, Poodles - and yes, they star in the book - know that the way to score a scoop is stealing a lick by leaping high. Others, petite like me, are dependent on compassionate humans bending down to, shall we say, give us a lick up. One thing we all have in common however is a commitment to earning that prize, a frosty treat on a hot sunny day. We are grateful to Ms. Lundin for chronicling our dilemma. And envious of the lucky pups who got to chow down in front of the camera. We hear that even celeb pups like Thunder whose pet parent is Kristin Chenoweth, gloried in their triumph, licking the odds to win this seasonal struggle. Panting with anticipation? You can pre-order at familius.com. Or wait ‘till Summer heats up to fetch a copy at dog-lovin’ booksellers everywhere. AUTHOR BIO FoxyLoxy MacDonald is a 10-year old Yorkie. HIKING WITH YOUR DOG? MAKE IT AN EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER By John Woods

ith the season for outdoor sports upon us, Pet Lifestyles offers an easy guide to teach you the basics of how to prepare your dog for hiking, the equipment you’ll need and some of the best dog breeds that are a match made in heaven for hiking. PREPARING YOUR DOG FOR HIKING Gear up to hiking with your dog.

Before you even begin to contemplate hiking with your dog, JohnWoods, owner of All Things Dogs, says that it is vital to ensure that your dog is well leash trained and has a good recall.

Build up your endurance before heading out on an extended hike.

If your dog isn’t used to long hikes and you’re just getting into this hobby, you’ll need to pace yourselves; slowly build up and increase the difficulty of each hike you do. Slowly increase your dog’s endurance until they’re ready to attempt a short hike. Before you leave for your first hike, you’ll need to ensure you have all the appropriate equipment, from the right leash, to a collapsible dog bowl.

WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL YOU NEED TO HIKE WITH YOUR DOG?

Before you leave for your first hike, you’ll need to ensure you have all the appropriate equipment, from the right leash, to a collapsible dog bowl. Ruffwear makes a terrific packable bowl called Quencher. Info: ruffwear.com

Harness Start with a harness with a handle. A harness helps so that if leash gets caught or dog gets into trouble, it’s not being strangled at the neck. Handle helps if you need to help the dog up and over boulders or tricky terrain. Leash You’ll need a good quality leash for hiking. There are so many different varieties to choose from: extendable leashes, to slacklines, to leashes that tie around your waste. The type you choose will depend on your dog and the types of hikes you’ll be doing. It is good to have an extra leash in your backpack in case of emergency.

Collapsible Dog Bowl + Water Bottle Dehydration and potential heat stroke are two risks that dogs face while enjoying the outdoors. Plan ahead to carry not only enough water for you, but for your dog as well. If going on extended day trips, consider purification bottles or tablets to convert water in lakes or streams into safe water sources for you and your pet.

Kurgo makes an entire system for hiking with your dog. Recommended is the Molle collar and country vest/harness with a handle to hold when covering rough terrain. Info: kurgo.com.

If you’re hiking on rugged terrain you might want to consider getting some boots for your dog to protect their delicate paws. Even if the terrain is smooth, sand can burn your dog’s paws so don’t take their stamina for granted. Backpack If you’re using a backpack for yourself and for your dog as well, start light. Don’t overload yourselves. It’s recommended that your dog carry no more than 25% of its body weight in its dog pack. If your dog is new to dog packs, start with a light load and work up to a heavier load as your dog gets accustomed to wearing the pack. 26 | PET LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

PLACES IN NY TO HIKE WITH YOUR DOG New York may be a vibrant bustling city, but there are actually quite a few places for you can get away and take your dog for a hike. Avid hiker and professional dog trainer Steffi Trott recommends these popular places where you can hike with your dog in New York. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation This spacious park is located about 90 minutes from NYC. On over 4,000 acres it offers a variety of terrain and wooded trails to explore. A total of 42 miles of trails wind through the park. You should not miss the Blue Trail that starts at the Kimberly Picnic Area and takes you to the highest point of the park at 860 ft elevation. If you hike this trail in June, you will see Laurels in full bloom along the way. If you want to hike a bit longer consider the Red Trail. Starting at the Michigan Road Picnic Area, it winds a 5.6 mile loop through the park across a variety of scenery. Rockefeller State Park This beautiful park is located only 30 miles outside of the hustle and bustle of NYC and offers you an oasis of peace and quiet. The park is known to be very dog-friendly, so expect to meet some other hikers and their dogs on the combined 32 miles of trails. You will be able to experience a variety of scenery: meadows, trickling streams and forests. Be sure to hike the 13 Bridges Loop Trail that takes you over 13 lovely rivulets while hiking a total of 1.9 miles. Cornish Estate Trail in Hudson Highlands State Park This trail sits next to the Hudson River and offers beautiful views of the imposing Mount Beacon. The 1.8 mile out-and-back trail is only open from February-November, so make sure to visit it during these months! It is the easiest hike in Hudson Highlands State Park. On your path you will pass the ruins of the estate on your left. Take some time to explore the remains of various structures, such as a greenhouse, pump house and swimming pool! • Enjoy your hike together with friends, family and your dog but be vigilant. Be aware of how your pet is faring with rough terrain, heat and other environmental factors at all times.

Ruffwear is definitely a go to resource when it comes to hiking with your four-legged BFF. Managing to be practical as well as attractive, the sturdy Slackline leash comes in twilight shades. Info: ruffwear.com.

TIPS FOR HIKING WITH YOUR DOGS Keep an eye on their panting. Panting is good, but excessive panting means your dog is overheated and you need to take a break! Dr Wendy Hauser of Veterinary Relations at Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group recommends that you prepare a doggy first aid kit including one roll each of: cast padding, gauze, vetwrap (synthetic elasticized self-clinging wrap) and elasticon (a very sticky somewhat stretchy bandage material). These versatile materials are great for bandaging lacerations, abrasions and sprains. Kristiana Kripena from InsectCop.net recommends using a petfriendly insect repellent on your dog every time you’re about to head out for a hike. That is the most successful way to ensure that mosquitoes, ticks, and other pests aren’t attacking your dog while you’re hiking. Steffi Trott of Spirit Dog Training says it is important to be courteous of others while hiking. Everyone has a right to be on the trail and it is everyone’s duty to make others feel comfortable. Keep your dog to the side to let other hikers pass and do not allow your dog to get up close and personal with them. Not everyone is fond of a dog sniffing their pockets or bare legs! JUNE/JULY 2019

CATS, THE NEW THERAPY PETS By Alyssa Huckleberry

hen you think therapy pet, what comes to mind? A dog, right? Probably a lab or a golden retriever. If you think longer and harder, your mind might conjure some more comical images of birds, tortoises, or hamsters in the line of duty… animals that have snagged headlines for their surprising (and rare) service. But what about a cat? After all, a 2016 Gallup study showed that 44% of Americans own a dog and 29% a cat…hardly the numbers represented when you consider the number of dogs trained as therapy pets versus the number of cats.

Felix pays a therapy visit. Cats can be loving visitors too.

Some predictable factors have kept cats on the sidelines: shy or skittish temperaments, cats’ sense of independence (not so pleased to be confined to a leash), and the issue of transportation (most cat owners will describe torturous, hair-rising car rides when they’ve needed to transport their cat) are some reasons frequently cited. And yet, cats who don’t fit this stereotype can be the perfect antidote for anxious children, fragile seniors, and the individual in need of a warm lap. Not only that, but cats’ smaller size and cuddle-quotient serve as powerful incentives to bring more felines into the realm of pet therapy.

Felix is precisely that kind of cat: a curious, unbiased attention-hog who loves to travel and doesn’t mind a leash (just to name a few of his quixotic behaviors). The response is the same if Felix is at the neighborhood coffee shop, Farmer’s Market, or the beach: people that spot his pointy ears and wide eyes poking out of the top of the pet purse will usually begin by murmuring to their companions about the presence of a cat outside the home before either chuckling or asking to meet the furry little charmer. Like any pet owner, I’m biased towards my fur-baby: he’s adorable (yes), he’s so well-behaved (yes, yes), he’s so calm (well…you’re not seeing him at home). But it was the repeated and unexpected emotional responses that got the gears turning for Felix’s aptitude for pet therapy: on many occasions, strangers holding Felix close would begin crying before going on to share heartfelt memories or strong feelings that his presence elicited. Family members and friends expressed shock at the number of “cat people”: a group of people with no less affection but with fewer opportunities to interact with their preferred pet in public.

Felix the therapy cat en route to a caring visit.

Today, Felix can be found ministering to school-age children as well as seniors in the nearby nursing home (where his owner rather sheepishly is sometimes made to sing the “Felix the Cat” song from the old cartoon). While the visits themselves run the gamut, here are some tips that we’ve picked up along the way. •

THE LUXURY OF SAFETY PET LUXURY SHAMPOO By Annabelle Shapiroby

eet Virginia Perez, a proud pet parent who as a lawmaker has been fighting to strengthen animal protection laws. Virginia created her exclusive collection of Pet Luxury Shampoos and Conditioners to counteract her concerns over the issues created by many pet care products on the market. Virginia is focused on providing formulas that are especially formulated to be gentle, safe, and effective. Pet Luxury provides products that are free of harsh or harmful chemicals, dyes and detergents. Due to her great love for animals and desire to put an end to animal cruelty, part of the proceeds of Pet Luxury are donated to various animal welfare organizations that focus on the health, safety and psychological wellness of animals. Pet Luxury products are carefully formulated using popular fragrances and nutritional ingredients that were originally designed for humans. To ensure quality and safety, our products are made in an FDA registered, NASC certified, cGMP and FSMA compliant laboratory. Pet Lifestyles recently met with Virginia to find out more about her company and its impact on the pet industry. What inspired you to create this product line? How did you come up with this concept? When my dogs developed an adverse reaction to a shampoo I picked up at a local store I became concerned when my youngest puppy began developing kidney problems. After a few vet visits to mitigate and reverse the problem I learned that 80 percent of organ failure in pets can be caused by chemicals and topical treatments. Like any loving pet parent, I began my research and was infuriated to learn that many popular pet products contain harmful chemicals, dyes, and detergents. Moreover, some formulas are so unbalanced that they are completely ineffective or are blended with such heavy perfumes that are designed to mask the problem instead of treating it. What makes Pet Luxury dog shampoo unique and stand out from the rest? My pets are part of my family and I would do whatever it takes to provide them with longer, happier and healthier lives. And so, Pet Luxury was born. I created Pet Luxury Products out of pure love for my pets and the necessity to treat them with products that won’t deter their good health and threaten to shorten their lifespan. I focused on providing formulas that are specially formulated to be gentle, safe, and effective. Pet Luxury provides products that are free of harsh or harmful chemicals, dyes, and detergents. Carefully

formulated using popular fragrances and natural ingredients that were originally designed for humans. Our exclusive deodorizing formulas are infused with exotic ingredients like Japanese Cherry Blossom, Cucumber Melon, Sweet Pea and Vanilla, and Sun Ripened Raspberry. We are one hundred percent GMO-free, Paraben-free and Cruelty-free. To ensure quality and safety, our products are made in an FDA registered, NASC certified, cGMP and FSMA compliant laboratory. Our products are currently the best on the market because we don’t mask the problem, we treat it. Can you please tell me more about your line of pet products? Is there a website to find out more info on it? Our products are manufactured with their quality in mind. Although our name, quality, and presentation were designed to deliver a true sense of luxury we are very proud of the fact that we come from humble beginnings, which is why we are a luxury care brand for pets that won’t break the bank. As a lawmaker, I have been fighting tirelessly to strengthen animal protection laws, but I won’t stop there. By creating Pet Luxury I am helping protect more than my own pets. I vowed to support countless animals in need by donating part of our proceeds to various animal welfare organizations that focus on the health, safety and psychological wellness of animals. By purchasing Pet Luxury you are helping us put an end to animal cruelty one bottle at the time. What is your target audience? What dogs are most suitable for them? Pet Luxury is safe for all animals including dogs, cats, and even horses. All of our grooming products are gentle deodorizers which make our formulas suitable for all skin and coat types no matter what breed of fur baby you have. How can one purchase these products? ZANI’S FURRY FRIENDS: THEIR MANTRA IS RESCUE By Aaron Greenbaum

hen you visit an adoption center to pick out a dog or cat, do you favor younger, perkier pets, or does your heart melt for older, less-active animals who need just as much love? Do you mind if your adopted fur baby is missing a limb, an ear, an eye, or is deaf/blind? Regardless of your preference, Zani’s Furry Friends has your purrfect match. Zani’s Furry Friends ZFF Inc. (or ZFF for short) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mantra is Rescue. The organization is dedicated to rescuing cats and dogs from New York City shelters, where space is at a premium and the risk of euthanasia is high. Completely funded by donations and staffed by volunteers, Zani’s has operated for almost twenty years and has saved the lives of thousands of cats and dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages.

Even though Zani’s Furry Friends (ZFF) started as an adoption service to ferry pets from shelters to loving families, it has grown into a network of New York City foster homes and one New Jersey boarding facility – fittingly a renovated vet’s office with plenty of outdoor space and couches.

Zani’s Furry Friends also helps the occasional horse, too.

Although many of the cats and dogs ZFF rescues are from the Animal Care Centers (ACC) of New York City there is also an overseas contingent, dogs in need of forever homes arriving at Kennedy Airport from far flung corners of the world. Zani’s holds adoption events in New York and New Jersey, three or four a week during the warm weather months, thanks to its dedicated Adoption Van. Most Fridays, New Jersey adoption hopefuls can join the Zani’s crew at the Iron Plow Winery in Columbus, NJ. On Saturdays or Sundays, the Zani’s team visits the Tractor Supply Stores in Southampton and Allentown, NJ, just in case customers in the market for a new chicken coop or tractor may also want a loyal pet to help around the farm or lovingly greet them after a long day in the fields. Alternatively, Saturday or Sunday, the furry friends return to NYC to run around Carl Schurz Park for another weekly adoption event, weather permitting, of course. Even when the cats and dogs aren’t playing outside on the weekend, they can sit comfortably in the adoption van, so people who are interested in adopting a pet need only walk up to a Zani’s volunteer and ask how much is that doggy/kitty in the window. Zani’s Furry Friends is excited to be a part of the World Dog Expo, keep an eye out for their van not to mention an array of rescue dogs ready for loving families. The name of the organization might be playful, but Zani’s Furry Friends’ volunteers are one hundred percent serious when it comes to their wards’ happiness. For instance, if their cats need the company of another cat, they only let people adopt cats in pairs. More importantly, Zani’s only took on animals who got past the discerning eye of the Boarding Dog Director Ursula. Sadly, she recently passed but this beloved mascot was an excellent judge of character. If an abandoned pet got along with her, they were deemed prime adoption material. Will there be a new Ursula, we all have to wait and see.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY RESCUES FOR EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AT HAPPINESS

Zani’s Furry Friends might focus on the pets of New York City, but they always have time to help cats and dogs in need from afar. I’m talking countries such as Puerto Rico, Egypt, Jordan, and Kuwait, and many other countries in the Middle East and Asia. Zani’s works with foreign rescuers to save pets from any country where “animal welfare” is not a common practice. And occasionally, with advance advertising, these overseas pets are adopted upon arrival. Volunteers at Zani’s have rescued older, blind, three-legged cats and dogs, and they’ve also rescued animals thrown from buildings, burned with acid, hammered on the head, deliberately hit by cars, and have resultingly suffered other horrendous injuries – usually in countries with lax animal welfare if existent at all. ZFF tends to keep their adoptions local to the Metropolitan Area and New England, but volunteers never give up long distance options for that perfect home. While not their common practice, a few of their cats and dogs have found forever homes in Washington, D.C., Florida, New Mexico, Washington, Utah, California, and a coterie of adopters has even traveled from as far away as Nova Scotia, Switzerland, and Finland. Some of these adopters fly in for their new furry family members to meet them at the airport and load them onto their return flights. The less stress a rescue pet experiences before reaching its new forever home, the better.

INSTAGRAM FOR INSTA-ADOPTION

To help find new potential adoption families and expedite the process, Zani’s Furry Friends has adopted (pardon the pun) many social media practices. The organization has its own Facebook page, Zani’s Furry Friends ZFF (not to be confused with the Zani’s Furry Friends Facebook group; that’s an unaffiliated group), as well as an Instagram account. However, the official Instagram account is just called Zani’s Furry Friends. Adoption hopefuls can check out Zani’s latest rescues through Facebook and Instagram, and many of their adoptees have their own dedicated Instagram accounts. While browsing, potential adopters see the photos and fall in love, resulting in adoptions. Moreover, these accounts help ZFF volunteers keep up with the progress of an adopted pet, as well as spread word of Zani’s Furry Friends’ activities to potential adopters, always a boon for non-profit organizations that can’t spend too much money on marketing.

When a Zani’s Furry Friends pet finds a forever home, they’re set for life.

Zani’s Furry Friends ZFF, Inc has come a long way from its beginnings as a local adoption service. If you would like to help by donating your time or money, or if you want to read their most recent stories or check up on their adoptables, visit Zani’s website at zanisfurryfriends.org. And, if you’re in the neighborhood, please drop by their many adoption events in New York and New Jersey and say Hi! to the volunteers.• JUNE/JULY 2019

TAKING YOUR City Cat to the Country this Summer? Follow These FIVE Tips TO MAKE YOUR Feline A HAPPY CAMPER By Arielle Bennett and Dr. Eric Dougherty, DVM

any of us city-dwellers wait impatiently through NYC’s chilly seasons to finally reach our summer getaways. We may choose a quick escape close to home, like The Hamptons, The North Fork (of Long Island), or the upstate wonders of the Empire State, and a select group of us stay regional specifically so we can travel with our cats. Around this time of year, many of our clients at our cat-only veterinary practice in Manhattan (www.thecatpractice.com) often ask us how to best travel with their cats, so here are some tips that may help anyone wondering how to plan for making their city cat into a country kitty this summer. Book travel with cats well in advance As one of those crazy cat parents that is nearly incapable of traveling without my cats (I know, I know!), I have learned there are very few accommodations that accept cats as hotel, bed and breakfast, or vacation home guests. In the entire North Fork region, three years ago I called literally every hotel and bed and breakfast, and found only a couple spots that would let me bring one cat. The place we ended up staying at had to inspect our cat on arrival and look over the room before we left – and of course I was guilty the entire trip of having only ¼ of my cats with me! I discovered that these “pet friendly” accommodations almost always meant “dogsonly.” Vacation home sites have the same issue in this region; they advertised as pet friendly but when I messaged about their pet policy, it was the same “no cats allowed” response. Last year I found one house to rent for three days in the Hamptons that finally welcomed my 4 cats. The catch: it was double my budget and smelled of wet dogs when we arrived. All of this is assuming you’re traveling with cats by car, so if you’re traveling via plane to get to a local U.S. destination, not only will you often need a health certificate from your vet, but you will have to follow the airline’s many everchanging rules as well as most likely book your air travel over the phone via 1980s tech. While this phone call can be a frustrating process, it is important to ask the agent all of your kitty-travel questions so there won’t be any issues at the airport. Test a harness system indoors before your let your cat roam outstide. Cats are natural escape artists so be advised that they can probably manage slither out of many a secure-looking harness

Cats do love to be in the lap of luxury, here are Terrance and Phillip chillin’ at the hotel

Visit your vet beforehand and get your cat up to date Making sure your cat is fully vaccinated with a clean bill of health is better to do before a vacation then during one, especially if your cat is older. Not only will this give you peace of mind while traveling, but it will hopefully prevent needing veterinary services on vacation if you’re going to a place with few vets in the area. This also gives you the opportunity to talk with your vet about how to travel with your cat and minimize your city kitty’s stress on the road and in a new environment. While many cat parents ask us about sedating cats for travel, for most short trips we usually advise against this. We recommend using feliway and catnip, and a favorite toy and cozy bed prepped in your cat’s carrier to begin. For some highly stressed cats there may be anti-anxiety medicine options such as Trazadone if your vet decides this is the best course. Keep in mind, if your cat is trying a new medicine recommended by their vet to travel, usually it’s best to first try it at home one day well before travel to be sure your cat doesn’t have any adverse reactions. It’s never a good idea to try new medicine for the first time while your cat is literally on the road and away from medical care if needed.

MICROCHIPPING YOUR CAT IS A MUST Over the years we’ve had a few heartbreaking calls from frantic cat parents that lost their cats on vacation without being microchipped. Don’t let this happen to you! Even if your cat is a city cat 99% of the time, and hopefully you will never need this feature, it’s always better to be on the safe side if an emergency arises. If your cat is lost and then found, any vet office, shelter, or rescue will be able to scan your pet and start the process of getting her back to you.

Check us out on the web!

FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION IS USEFUL IN THE COUNTRY While city cats that don’t venture outdoors are rarely exposed to fleas or ticks, country cats are taking a bigger risk and should be given a preventative treatment before vacationing. New York is unfortunately home to ticks in many of our vacation destinations, as anyone that’s hiked through this great land has probably discovered the hard way. While cats tend to be a little more resistant in general to tick borne illnesses than dogs, it is always best to take a cautious approach. Frontline and Revolution preventatives for cats are worth considering for this region, especially if you plan on giving kitty any supervised outdoor time (Frontline does fleas and ticks, while Revolution does fleas and heartworm). Remember, never combine/overlap over the counter flea treatments, and many of these options on the shelves are toxic to cats anyway, so it’s best to discuss prevention options with your vet before trying them at home. In general, flea collars are not recommended as a method of prevention.

Boney on vacation

BRING KITTY OUTSIDE ONLY WITH GREAT CAUTION AND SUPERVISION For many reasons, city cats shouldn’t roam outside in the country without close supervision. The chance of escape aside, city cats don’t know the rules of outdoor life. They haven’t been exposed to the elements or predators, and we should never assume that all cats know where they are at all times. Even if they are very food motivated and love you dearly, they can easily get lost, hurt, or even find their way up a tree and have no way to get down, and one mistake is a mistake too many as far as their health and safety are concerned. One of my cats, Boney, is an avid escape artist thanks to his early years living in the countryside and learning about the joys of nature before we became NYC apartment dwellers, so for him I make an outdoor exception on a rare occasion as long as he is on a leash and I am with him at all times. Cats can escape from leashes easily as well, so test a harness system indoors a couple times before venturing outside. Luckily, the few times Boney has gone outside in his old age, his main desire is to roll around and look directly at the sun for some reason, but he also wants to chew on every plant he comes across. Many garden plants, trees, and shrubs are toxic to cats, which is another reason why it is safest to be right there, babysitting your little carnivore, simply to stop them from their ridiculous drive to gnaw on greenery. If not, you will probably have at minimum a puke or two as a result, since eating grass usually has this consequence for kitty. PET WELLNESS

In Chinese Medicine, the eyes are the window of the liver. Trouble with your pet’s eyes can be a sign of larger health issues.

SEEING CLEARLY

UNDERSTANDING EYE HEALTH AND YOUR PET Dr. Judy Morgan DVM

nowing the signs of eye disease is important for every pet owner, as many times vision may be lost in as little as a few hours. It’s important to be aware of what the “normal” eye looks like for your pet. Take time to gaze into your pet’s eyes at least once or twice a day to spot early warning signs of trouble. To learn how to recognize potential problems with your pet’s eyes, PET LIFESTYLES asked renowned holistic vet, Dr. Judy Morgan, an owner of the Clayton and Churchtown Veterinary Associates in Salem County, New Jersey (claytonvetnj.com), and also the author of From Needles to Natural: Learning Holistic Pet Healing and the best-seller, Yin & Yang Nutrition for Dogs to identify what to look for as well as what treatment options might be. Learn more about her natural approach to pet health integrating both Western and Eastern therapies at drjudymorgan.com. REDNESS in the white part of the eye (sclera) signals inflammation. This may be caused by external irritation from pollen, dust, smoke, or scented sprays and candles. Other causes of increased redness include increased pressure within the eye (glaucoma or a mass within the eye), ulceration or a scratch on the cornea, or inflammation elsewhere in the body. The eyes are the window of the liver from a Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view (no pun intended). When there is trouble within the liver, redness may be seen in the eyes. Unless there is a clear indication of a primary ocular (eye) problem, I recommend running tests of liver function to make sure there is not a bigger problem going on. Many times, red eyes are the first indicator of a bigger problem such as lymphoma or other generalized cancer. If you recognize any of these symptoms, head to your vet immediately. 34 | PET LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

JUNE/JULY 2019

Dr. Judy Morgan DVM of Clayton and Churchtown Vets in New Jersey takes a natural approach to pet health integrating both Eastern and Western therapies. A respected author as well, she believes in the power of nutrition to maximize your pet’s health.

ULCERATION or scratches on the cornea, are extremely painful. They may occur from external trauma or from self-trauma from scratching or rubbing the head, seen commonly in animals with itching due to allergies. Symptoms may include a grayish haze on part of the cornea, increased tear production, squinting, sensitivity to light, and redness. The cornea is only seven cell layers thick; corneal rupture can occur if not treated immediately. Treatment will generally include topical antibiotics, possibly medications for pain, and a collar to prevent rubbing the eye and causing more trauma. GLAUCOMA is a medical emergency. The eye will be red, painful, cloudy, and possibly bulging. If not treated to reduce the pressure within twelve to twenty-four hours, permanent blindness is likely to occur. Brachycephalic (flat-faced breeds like Pugs, Pekingese, and Bulldogs) and Spaniel breeds tend to be more prone to glaucoma, but the condition can be seen in any breed at any age.

One healthy pup enjoyimg CBD treats from tippyorganics.com

The large, luminous eyes of flat-faced breeds like the Pekingese pictured here as well as Pugs and Bulldogs are prone to eye issues like Glaucoma. Watch for symptoms and see your vet immediately.

PANNUS is a condition in which there is a black pigment film that covers the cornea. This is generally due to chronic irritation of the cornea, as commonly seen with “dry eye” when there is not enough tear production. Dry eye is more common in small breeds and in dogs fed dry kibble diets. There may be some breed predisposition as well. Increased moisture in the diet will help. Pets with this condition will benefit greatly from the use of artificial tears; check with your vet about options here as they may prefer to prescribe an anti-inflammatory drug. CATARACTS may be seen in any age pet but are most commonly seen in older animals. Juvenile cataracts can occur. There is no magic cure for cataracts, although supporting the liver with products such as milk thistle and Sam-e may be of some benefit. Cataracts are very common in diabetic pets so in this case, it is important to regulate blood sugar to decrease cataract formation. However they may also result from other conditions not immediately or properly attended to, i.e. an injury to te eye. CHERRY EYE is a condition in which the tear gland of the third eyelid in the inner corner of the eye is visible as a red, inflamed lump. The gland produces about twenty percent of the tear film and should be surgically replaced down behind the eyelid whenever possible. At times the gland will not stay in place, even after surgical repair, and will have to be removed. Cherry eye should be repaired; if left exposed, the gland will become dry, irritated, and painful. Pets will rub the eye, increasing their risk for corneal ulceration. ENTROPIAN is a curling in of the upper or lower eyelids, allowing the eyelashes to rub the eye, which is prone to corneal ulceration due to chronic trauma from the hair rubbing the cornea. Surgical correction is the preferred method of treatment. Shar Pei and Chow dogs are known for this condition, but it can be seen in any breed. SARDS or Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration in dogs is an inflammatory condition that results in sudden blindness. This may be an auto-immune condition; dogs will generally have increased thirst and urination, indicating an inflammatory process in the body. Many times, these dogs will also have increased liver enzymes, showing the connection between the liver and eye health. No effective treatments have halted the progression of this disease, but steroids and other immunosuppressants are generally prescribed. Pugs, Dachshunds, and miniature Schnauzers are over-represented. In my practice treat this condition with TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine) food therapy, using diets that will cool the body, decrease inflammation, and drain the liver. •

MOM ON A MISSION

FOUNDER OF FIVE STRANDS AFFORDABLE TESTING TELLS HER STORY By Lori Zelenko

om on a mission - now that is a force to be reckoned with - a merger of power and passion. That’s the force, the vital energy, of Lisa Blaurock, founder of 5Strands Affordable Testing. Struggling with weight and digestive issues most of her life, she spent thousands of dollars in testing and surgeries. Still desperate for answers on why she was not improving, she learned through an expensive allergy test that she was intolerant to some of her favorite foods. Several months later, her daughter too had digestive issues. Although Lisa had the option of expensive blood tests and more invasive and yes, expensive, means of determining allergies, she felt this was not the route to follow.

Diorabelle before and after 5Strands Testing helped eliminate intolerances.

Lisa searched for alternative ways to do intolerance testing. Research led her to discover a lab offering a blood test for $250.00 via an “at home kit.” Lisa sent the kit to her daughter, away at college. Tears resulted when Lisa’s daughter had to painfully prick her own finger in her dorm room and collect the blood sample. Surely this caring Mom said to herself, there has to be a better and easier way to test for intolerances. With further research, she found a lab in Europe that was doing testing with hair - and understanding her mission - AFFORDABLE TESTING FOR ALL - contracted with her and 5Strands Affordable Testing was created. Due to logistics, the lab was eventually opened here in the USA. Fast forward about a year, Lisa’s human customers start asking how to test their pets? Can Lisa help? Being a pet parent to four herself, she wanted to help. So she developed a hair analysis test for pets to determine food intolerances and environmental allergens. Affordable Allergy Test Founder Lisa Blaurock who is always so happy to see what a difference diagnosing intolerances and making changes can make for our pets.

The 5Strands Affordable Pet Test tests for around 200 food and 100 environmental items. A simple at home test that utilizes your pet’s hair. Painless, hassle free, and affordable at $144.00. And best of all, no vet referral needed. Taking lessons learned from her human experience, Lisa recommended eliminating potential intolerances for Diorabelle. After the first week, her coat, eyes, personality, temperament, and energy level all improved greatly. There was also noticeably less itching after the very first day. Says Lisa, “I had been struggling for 2 years trying to figure out how to help her get healthy. THIS test with my quick action started her healthy life in just 3 weeks. She barely looks like the same pup. What a difference a few months can make when armed with the correct information.” Within 4 months of Diorabelle getting on the right nutrition plan (eliminating trigger foods), she has gained 1 pound (she’s now 4 lbs.), only has occasional itching, bright clear eyes, her coat is coming in thick and lush (no bald spots), she has much more energy and her tummy issues are gone. She is a very healthy happy pup now. It is obvious Affordable Testing is AMAZING! Don’t hesitate to order today and get your pet healthy too! You’ll be so happy you did! PET WELLNESS

When you spot a tick on your dog, carefully take tweezers to remove it. Ask your vet how to recognize Lyme-disease carrying ticks and what to do if your pet gets infected.

IT’S FLEA AND TICK SEASON PREVENTION: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW By Pamela Smythe-Woods

leas and Ticks are two of the most common parasites plaguing our beloved housepets, so PET LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE asked Dr. Brett Shorenstein VMD, Medical Director of Abingdon Square Veterinary Clinic (abingdonsquarevet.com) how to recognize fleas and ticks on your pet; the results of a bite or infestation, and the best solutions for prevention and treatment. RECOGNIZING FLEAS AND TICKS

The most immediately apparent signs of fleas are itchy, irritated skin; hair loss, scabs, flea dirt (dark grains) or even pale gums. Ticks can be found anywhere on the body and they are typically not even noticed by your pet so it is up to you to be vigilant. Ticks are typically found around the face or at the ear base, however, they can be anywhere - even between the toes.

TREATING PREVALENT PARASITES

Dr. Brett Shorenstein of Abingdon Square Vets tells us how to keep our pets safe and healthy this Summer by preventing fleas and ticks.

Treatment for fleas involves your veterinarian administering an oral medication for rapid flea knockdown, monthly prevention indefinitely and then environmental decontamination with vacuuming, washing all bedding and possibly a pet safe exterminator. Tick treatment: It is important to remove the entire tick appropriately. If a tick is removed in less than 12 hours; most tick-borne diseases will not be transmitted in that period of time. If you are going to remove a tick, it important that the tick is removed completely - use a pair of tweezers and grip as close to your pet’s skin as possible - try to grasp at the neck of the tick and not squeeze the body of the tick as this may release infective organisms such as Lyme disease. Pull up evenly. Make sure the tick’s mouthparts have been removed. Your veterinarian will want to run a blood test for tick-borne disease 4-6 weeks after tick exposure and will advise on treatment as necessary. If any lethargy, limping, loss of appetite is noted after tick exposure - see your veterinarian as this may signify a tick-borne disease.

BEST WAYS TO PREVENT

We recommend year-round flea and tick prevention. Speak to your vet about the best option for your pet. This may be in the form of an oral product such as Nexgard, Simparica, Bravecto or a topical such as Frontline or a collar such as Seresto. There are natural prevention choices as well if a holistic approach is preferred, however Dr. Shorestein feels strongly that these products are not powerful enough to deter fleas and ticks. He suggests adhering to your vet’s suggestion for a prescription product. However if you are committed to natural products, Wondercide (wondercide.com) offers a wide aromatherapeutic selection for dogs and cats (also for home or yard) with essences including Peppermint or Lemongrass and Sit Stay Forever (sitstayforever.com) offers organic Neem Oil Spray for dogs. 38 | PET LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE

JUNE/JULY 2019

Be very careful with over-the-counter products which may not be safe for your pet. Products that are safe for dogs are NOT safe for cats, therefore, each species should only use their species-specific preventives. The risks of the veterinary prescribed preventives are low - but the oral products can cause gastrointestinal upset and in RARE circumstances seizure may be seen. Your veterinarian can discuss the risks further based on the specific patient. The topicals and collars can have a local reaction at the site where they are placed, so if you start to see any sign of irritation remove the collar and try an alternative. It is a good idea to completely run your hands through your pet’s fur after time outdoors and be sure to do a tick check after coming inside each night from a tick endemic area. •
