Hi, everyone! This issue the reader will confront

with Suhkothai is a “Dawn of Happiness” land or a land that “has fishes in water and rice in paddy field” or a land that “originated Thai alphabets” Sukhothai Province, the former glorious metropolis, commercial center city of the Sukhothai Kingdom, the city originating art and culture pervading with diversity scent of beautiful and valuable art on craftsmanship, handicraft, Buddhist art and architecture, is the world heritage and is one of the important tourist sites in Thailand. Although, the time lapsed over 700 years, its traces of the glorious past and the beauty of this land can still be seen by new generations generally. If one visit at this place, one must fall in love with this charming old town of Sukhothai and will be certainly impressed forever with the origin of Sukhothai Kingdom that Thai people should be proud and experience once in the life. Sukhothai is also charming with lifestyle of happy city attracting everyone to experience by yourself. We hope you will have fun and enjoy this edition of Next Travel Magazine. Thank you!

Though the royal barges of Thailand are the last of their kind, the spectacular pagent on water can still be seen in Thailan. And this legendary procession seems to have orignated in the capital of Sukhothai kingdom,probably as in the 13th century. The earliest historical evidence concerning royal barges dates from the Sukhothai period, which mentions briefly some names of royal vessels participated in certain waterborne state ceremonies. The names of barges mantioned are Rua Prathinang Prahat Saeng Chan

(Toyal Barge for Appreciation of Moon - light), Rua Pratinang Chai Chalerm Tharanin (Royal Barge of Victory Over the Land); and Rua Prathinang Chai Sinthuphiman (Royal Barge of Victory on the Celestia River). From the later historical evidences, we learn that in the subsequent Ayutthaya period, the magnificent processions included a large fleet of royal barges aligned on the rivers and canals at the island capital of Ayatthaya. During this period the most inprotant royal barge processions had been organized for the royal Kathin ceremony. Once

a year at the end of the rainy season the Ayutthaya kings went to their royal monasteries to offer robes and other monastic paraptermalia to the monks. Towaeds the end of the period, it seems that the royal barge processions had also been held for other purposes than the Kathin ceremony. The kings then visited Saraburi once a years to pay homage to the newly discovered foot - prints of the Buddha. The earliest detailed account on the royal barge procession handed down to us was complied during the reign of King Prasat Thong (1630-1655)

in the late Ayutthaya period, which mentions that a number of new barges were constructed particularly for the King’s Kathin ceremony. In the following reign of King Narai the Great (1656-1688), the monarch had his court scribes to make specified records on royal processions both on water and on land. This particular document is entiled “The Royal Processions of King Narai the Great’s Reign”. It is interesting to notice that this literary descrptions are almost alike with the procession scenes illustrated in the murals at Wat Yom in Ayutthaya. The original

murals have since been deteriorated, but their copy on Khoi manuscript made in the beginning of our century still exists in the National Archives. According to many other records, several of which were made by European missionaries, traders and envoys, we can conclude the the Royal Barge Procession in the reign of King Narai the Great had spectacular, in accordance with the prosperity of the Kingdom at the time. The procession continued on to the last reign of the Ayutthaya period, but was in much smaller scale. Many of the remaining barges deteriorated gradually. During the war which brought about the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, the royal barges were lost along with other treasures and the records of the Kingdom. When King Rama I ascended the throne in 1782, to become the first king of the present Chakri Dynasty, he considered the renewal of national arts and craft and maintenance of tradition, an early. This included construction of new royal barges. So the royal barge procession survives and has occasionally been performed since then up to today. The Royal Barge Procession, a royal ceremony that involves more than fifty gold-crafted barges, is one of the most spectacular events in the world. With a long-run history sinceAyutthayaera, the procession aims to transport the king and/or

member(s) of the royal family during special events, such as when delivering the new robes to the monks after a Buddhist Lent period. The museum houses a precious collection of historic barges, some of which were built during the reign of King Rama I, more than two hundred years old. These barges are made of high-quality wood and beautifully decorated with vivid colors, mirrors and gold leaves. Each barge’s figurehead was crafted to represent a different kind of animals, which are vehicles of Rama god according to the Hindu belief. (Thais belief that the kings are avatars of Rama god). Probably the most remembered barge as it’s part of the logo of Tourism Authority of Thailand, the figurehead of the 46-meter-long Suphannahong royal barge features the shape of a mystical swan. It was built in 1911 during the reign of King Rama VI and is one of the four main royal barges which are the vehicles of the king. The other three, which are also the highlights of the museum, are Ananta Nagaraj with naga-shape figurehead, Narai Song Suban with Rama god on a garuda figurehead and Anekchat Puchong. National Museum of Royal Barges On April 1932 King Rama VII crossed the lower span of the Memorial Bridge and embarked on the barge Suphanahong to travel by barge procession to the Grand Palace to mark the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Chakri Dynasty and Bangkok as the capital city. That was the last Royal Barge Procession of an absolute Monarch of Siam, for the following June a coup dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;etat changed the government from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy. The barges were then kept at the dry dock on the Bangkok Noi Canal under the care of Royal Household and Royal Navy. The barge sustained severe damage during bombing of Bangkok in World War ll, soon after his return from school in Europe, the present king, H.M.King Bhumibol Adylvadej went to see the barges in their dock. Noting their deterotiatiom, His Majesty ordered their restoration; and decided to revive the ancient tradition of the Royal Barge Procession for auspicious occasions. Artists under the direction of the Fine Arts Department spent more than a year repairing the damage. In 1972 this dock was then renovated and established by the Fine Arts Department as the National Museum of Royal Barges.

พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ เรือพระราชพิธี พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ เรือพระราชพิธี เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ที่ตั้ง อยู่บริเวณปากคลองบางกอกน้อย เขตบางกอกน้อย ภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์ฯ จัด แสดงเรือพระราชพิธีส�ำคัญ 8 ล�ำ ได้แก่ เรือพระที่นั่งสุพรรณหงส์ เรือพระที่นั่ง อนันตนาคราช เรือพระที่นั่งอเนกชาติภุชงค์ เรือพระที่นั่งนารายณ์ทรงสุบรรณ รัชกาลที่ 9 เรือครุฑเหินเห็จ เรือกระบี่ปราบเมืองมาร เรืออสุรวายุภักษ์ และ เรือเอกไชยเหินหาว นอกจากเรือพระที่นั่งและเรือต่าง ๆ ที่ใช้ในกระบวน พยุหยาตราทางชลมารคที่จัดแสดงอยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑ์ฯ แล้ว ยังมีเครื่องประกอบ และสิ่งของเครื่องใช้ในพระราชพิธีต่าง ๆ จัดแสดงอยู่ด้วย เช่น บัลลังก์บุษบก บัลลังก์กัญญา พายชนิดต่าง ๆ และเครื่องแต่งกายของเหล่าฝีพาย พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ เรือพระราชพิธี เดิมเป็นอู่หรือโรงเก็บเรือพระราชพิธี อยู่ในความดูแลของส�ำนักพระราชวังและกองทัพเรือ เมื่อคราวเกิดสงครามโลก ครั้งที่ 2 อู่และเรือพระราชพิธีบางส่วนถูกระเบิดได้รับความเสียหาย และใน ปี พ.ศ. 2490 ส�ำนักพระราชวังและกองทัพเรือได้มอบให้กรมศิลปากรท�ำการ ซ่อมแซมดูแลรักษาบรรดาเรือต่างๆ ที่ใช้ในพระราชพิธีเหล่านี้ เรือพระราช พิธีเป็นเรือที่มีประวัติส�ำคัญมาแต่โบราณ ที่ยังคงมีความสวยงามในฝีมือช่าง อันล�้ำเลิศ และทรงคุณค่าในงานศิลปกรรม ประการส�ำคัญ ยังสามารถน�ำมา

ใช้ในการพระราชพิธีต่างๆ สืบเนื่องมาจนถึงปัจจุบันนี้ กรมศิลปากรเล็งเห็น ความส�ำคัญ จึงได้ขึ้นทะเบียนเรือพระที่นั่งต่างๆ ไว้เป็นมรดกของชาติ พร้อม ทั้งยกฐานะของอู่เก็บเรือขึ้นเป็นพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ เรือพระราชพิธี เมื่อ ปี พ.ศ. 2517 โดยในอดีตเรือพระราชพิธีจะหมายถึงเรือที่สร้างขึ้นส�ำหรับใช้ใน ยามศึกสงคราม และเป็นราชพาหนะของกษัตริย์ในการเสด็จพระราชด�ำเนินไป บ�ำเพ็ญพระราชกุศล หรือประกอบพระราชกรณียกิจต่างๆ แต่เรือเหล่านั้นได้ ถูกท�ำลายไปหมดเมื่อคราวเสียกรุงครั้งที่สอง ต่อมารัชกาลที่ 1 โปรดเกล้าฯให้ สร้างเรือพระที่นั่งและเรือประกอบขบวนขึ้นอีกครั้ง และในรัชกาลต่อๆ มาก็มี การสร้างเรือเพิ่มเติมขึ้นอีกหลายล�ำ แม้ในช่วงหลังๆ เรือพระที่นั่งเหล่านี้จะไม่ ได้ใช้ในการสงครามแล้ว แต่ก็ได้ใช้ในการสืบทอดแบบแผนกขบวนพยุหยาตรา ทางชลมารคต่อไป รัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างอู่เรือหลวง ขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นใต้วัดระฆัง เพื่อใช้ในการซ่อมสร้างเรือรบที่นับวันจะมีจ�ำนวน มากขึ้น โดยพระองค์เสด็จฯ มาทรงกระท�ำพิธีเปิดอู่เรือหลวงด้วยพระองค์เอง เป็นปฐมฤกษ์ เมื่อวันที่ 9 มกราคม 2433 ซึ่งนับเป็นพระมหากรุณาธิคุณเป็น ล้นพ้นแก่กองทัพเรือ กิจการอู่เรือหลวงได้เจริญก้าวหน้าขึ้น จนต้องสร้างอู่เรือ หลวงขึ้นใหม่ เพื่อรองรับการซ่อมสร้างเรือที่มีเพิ่มมากขึ้น อู่เรือหลวงที่ทรงพระ

กรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯให้สร้างนี้ นับได้ว่าเป็นการวางรากฐานในกิจการของกรมอู่ ทหารเรือให้เจริญก้าวหน้ามาจนถึงปัจจุบัน นอกจากนี้ในวีดีทัศน์ยังกล่าวถึง ความเป็นมาของพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งนี้อีกด้วย เมื่อรู้ประวัติกันแล้วก็มายลโฉมเรือพระที่นั่งและเรือในขบวนเรือพระราชพิธี ที่ตั้งอยู่อย่างงามสง่า 8 ล�ำด้วยกัน โดยเรือล�ำแรกที่มีความส�ำคัญมากก็คือ “เรือพระที่นั่งสุพรรณหงส์” สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 และเสร็จลงในสมัย รัชกาลที่ 6 มีโขนเรือเป็นรูปหงส์ ซึ่งตามต�ำนานอินเดียถือว่าหงส์เป็นพาหนะ ของพระพรหม และเป็นเครื่องหมายของความสง่างาม สูงส่ง ถัดมาคือ “เรือ พระที่นั่งนารายณ์ทรงสุบรรณ รัชกาลที่ 9” เป็นเรือพระที่นั่งที่มีความใกล้ชิด กับประชาชนคนไทยในสมัยนี้มากที่สุด เพราะเรือล�ำนี้เป็นเรือที่สร้างขึ้นมาใหม่ โดยกรมศิลปากรร่วมกับกองทัพเรือ และส�ำนักพระราชวัง โดยเพิ่งสร้างเสร็จ ในปี 2539 เพื่อทดแทนเรือพระที่นั่งล�ำเดิม และเพื่อถวายแด่พระบาทสมเด็จ พระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ในมหามงคลวโรกาสพระราชพิธีกาญจนาภิเษ

กอีกด้วย “เรือพระที่นั่งอนันตนาคราช” โขนเรือเป็นรูปนาคเจ็ดเศียร สร้าง ขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 6 โดยปรกติแล้ว เรือพระที่นั่งล�ำนี้จะใช้เป็นที่ประดิษฐาน พระพุทธรูปส�ำคัญ หรือผ้าพระกฐินในกระบวนพยุหยาตราทางชลมารค ส่วน “เรือพระที่นั่งอเนกชาติภุชงค์” เป็นเรือพระที่นั่งรอง สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาล ที่ 5 โขนเรือจ�ำหลักลายปิดทองรูปพญานาคเล็กๆ จ�ำนวนมาก ส่วนเรือที่เหลือ นั้น มิได้เป็นเรือพระที่นั่ง แต่เป็นเรือประกอบในขบวนพยุหยาตราทางชลมารค ได้แก่ เรือเอกชัยเหินหาว เรือครุฑเหินเห็จ เรือกระบี่ปราบเมืองมาร และเรือ อสุรวายุภักษ์ รวมทั้งหมด 8 ล�ำที่อยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งนี้ จริงๆ แล้วเรือในขบวน พยุหยาตรายังมีมากกว่านั้น แต่เก็บรักษาไว้ในสถานที่อื่นๆ คือในโรงเรือแผนก พระราชพิธี กองเรือเล็ก กรมขนส่งทหารเรือ และโรงเรืออู่ยนต์หลวง ท่าวาสุก รี ส�ำหรับใครที่อยากชมเรือพระที่นั่งอย่างใกล้ชิดก็สามารถเข้าชมได้ เพราะทั้ง เรื่องราวของขบวนเรือพระราชพิธีและเรือต่างๆที่กล่าวมาข้างต้นนั้น ถือเป็น มรดกทางวัฒนธรรมของเมืองไทยที่ทรงคุณค่ายิ่ง

เปิดท�ำการบินเมือ่ วันที่ 12 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2539 สนามบิน สุโขทัย มีเนื้อที่ 2,000 ไร่ ตั้งอยู่ในเขต 3 ต�ำบล คือ ต.ท่าทอง ต.คลอง กระจง และ ต.ย่านยาว อ.สวรรคโลก จ.สุโขทัย เริม่ ด�ำเนินการก่อสร้าง เมือ่ ปีที่ 2535 และเปิดให้บริการในปี พ.ศ. 2539 ในเส้นทางกรุงเทพฯ– สุโขทัย–เชียงใหม่ เมือ่ 12 เมษายน 2539 และ สุโขทัย–เสียมราฐ (นคร วัด) เมือ่ 28 มีนาคม 2543 โดยใช้เครือ่ งบิน ATR 72-200 ขนาด 70 ทีน่ งั่ การออกแบบอาคารผู้โดยสารเป็นลักษณะทรงไทย เปิดโล่งตาม ศิลปะสุโขทัยโบราณ เพือ่ ความกลมกลืนและสอดคล้องกับวัฒนธรรม ของจังหวัดสุโขทัย โดยตัวอาคารสามารถรองรับผู้โดยสารทั้งขา เข้าและขาออกอาคารละ 150 คน ปั จ จุ บั น ทางวิ่ ง (Runway) ยาว 2,300 เมตร กว้ า ง 45 เมตร รองรั บ น�้ ำ หนั ก ได้ 45ตั น ทั้ ง นี้ บริ ษั ท ฯ ได้ รั บ ความร่ ว มมื อ จากบริ ษั ท วิ ท ยุ ก ารบิ น แห่ ง ประเทศไทย จ�ำกัด มาเป็นผู้ดูแลด้านการควบคุมการจราจรทาง อากาศ โดยติดตั้งเครื่องช่วยเดินอากาศ และด้านการสื่อสารการบิน โดยให้บริการข่ายสื่อสารการบินผ่านดาวเทียม VSAT และยังได้รับ ความร่วมมือจากกองอากาศการบิน กรมอุตุนิยมวิทยา ติดตั้งเครื่อง มือตรวจอากาศและรายงานสภาพอากาศบริเวณสนามบิน โดยใช้ เครื่องวัดทิศทางความเร็วของลม เครื่องวัดความกดอากาศ และ เครื่องวัดอุณหภูมิ ให้ทั้งสนามบินสุโขทัยและสนามบิน สมุยด้วย สนามบินสุโขทัยได้รับอนุญาตให้เป็นสนามบินศุลกากรประกอบ กิจการเดินอากาศแบบประจ�ำมีก�ำหนดประกอบด้วย ด่านตรวจ คนเข้ า เมื อ ง, ด่ า นศุ ล กากร ด่ า นกั ก กั น พื ช และด่ า นควบคุ ม โรคติ ด ต่ อ สามารถรองรั บ ผู ้ โ ดยสารที่ เ ดิ น ทางจากต่ า งประเทศได้ บริษัท การบินกรุงเทพ จ�ำกัด เปิดสนามบินสุโขทัย พร้อมให้บริการใน เส้นทาง กรุงเทพฯ-สุโขทัย และ กรุงเทพ-สุโขทัย-ล�ำปาง และจังหวัดใกล้ เคียง ทั้งนี้เพื่อเป็นการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวทางภาคเหนือตอนล่างของ ประเทศไทย อาทิเช่น อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ ศรีสัชนาลัย ฯลฯ รวมทั้ง ในเส้นทางในประเทศแถบอินโดจีน โดยบริษัทฯ มีความตั้งใจที่จะใช้สนามบินสุโขทัย เป็นศูนย์กลางการบินในภูมิภาคแถบนี้ บริเวณรอบๆสนามบินสุโขทัยมีภูมิทัศน์ที่หลากหลาย และ น่าตื่นตาตื่นใจ ท่านจะได้สัมผัสกับบรรยากาศที่เงียบสงบ ร่มรื่นภายในสนามบิน พร้อม กับ ได้สัมผัสในสนามบินแห่งนี้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นสวนสวยเขียวชอุ่ม และ โรง เรือนกระจกทีป่ ลูกเลีย้ งกล้วยไม้เอาไว้ มีอาคารพิพธิ ภัณฑ์ จัดแสดงรวบรวม เครื่องสังคโลก เครื่องถ้วยชามโบราณ และยัง มีพื้นที่แปลงนาอินทรีย์สาธิต ที่สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงวิถีชีวิต และ วัฒนธรรมการปลูกข้าวของคนในท้องถิ่น รวมไปถึงการใช้ควายในการไถนาอีกด้วยมีปชู นียสถานทีส่ ำ� คัญๆทางศาสนา เช่น ศาลพระพรหม และ ศาลของหลวงพ่อศิลา แบบจ�ำลองนครวัดส�ำหรับ ผู้ที่สนใจวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่นได้ศึกษา สัมผัส เรียนรู้ และลิ้มลองก๋วยเตี๋ยวขึ้น ชื่อของจังหวัดสุโขทัยที่ร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวลานบิน แปลงนาเกษตรอินทรีย์ ท่าน จะได้เห็นและสัมผัสกับวิถีชีวิตดั่งเดิมของชาวนาที่หมุนเวียนเปลี่ยนไปตาม ฤดูกาล ชาวนาที่อยู่ในชุดม่อฮ่อม สีฟ้าใช้ควายไถนา อยู่ในท้องทุ่ง ปลูกข้าว เกี่ยวข้าว หรือ สีข้าว เป็นต้น อีกทั้งยังมีสระบัว บึงหงส์ขาว หงส์ด�ำ รวมไป ถึง สวนสัตว์ขนาดย่อม มีทงั้ ยีราฟ อัลปาก้า ม้าลาย กวาง กระบือ ฯลฯ ร้าน ขายของที่ระลึกที่เกี่ยวกับสินค้าเกษตรอินทรีย์อีกด้วย

The Sukhothai Kingdom • Source of national heritage, the Thai alphabets, the best Loy Krathong celebrations, firm foundation of Buddhism, the fine Teen Jok cloth, ancient chinaware, holy Pho Khun Ramkhamhaeng’s mother, dawn of happiness. • The Sukhothai Kingdom also known as Sukhodaya, was an early kingdom in the area around the city Sukhothai, in north central Thailand. The Kingdom existed from 1238 until 1438. The old capital, now 12 km outside of New Sukhothai in Tambon Mueang Kao, is in ruins and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage historical park. Traditional Thai historians considered the foundation of the Sukhothai kingdom as the beginning of their nation because little was known about the kingdoms prior to Sukhothai. Modern historical studies demonstrate that Thai history began before Sukhothai. Yet the foundation of Sukhothai is still a celebrated event. Founded in the 13th century, Sukhothai, which literally means “Dawn of Happiness”, was the first truly independent Thai Kingdom and enjoyed a golden age under King Ramkhamhaeng, who is credited with creating the Thai alphabet. The superb temples and monuments of this great city have been lovingly restored, and Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see for all travelers. Sukhothai became an independent kingdom when two princes-Pho Khun Pha Muang and Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao combined their forces and drove the Khmers out of Sukhothai, then a major frontier post of the Angkor Empire.One of Thailand’s finest warriors, King Ramkhamhaeng, second son of Pho Khun Bang Klang Haok, made Sukhothai a powerful and extensive kingdom that even established direct political relations with China. Returning from the funeral of Emperor Kublai Khan, King Ramkhamhaeng brought back Chinese artisans who taught the art of pottery to the Thais. While visitors are eager to pick up today’s Sangkhalok Pottery, antique examples of such are eagerly sought by collectors. King Ramkhamhaeng also promoted religion and culture, and through his efforts Buddhism flourished among the population. Inspirational faith gave birth to classic forms of Thai religious arts; images of the Lord Buddha sculptured during the Sukhothai Era are cultural treasures that impart a feeling of peace and serenity.A total of eight kings ruled Sukhothai but the gradual

decline of Sukhothai occurred during the reigns of the last two kings. The end of this first Thai kingdom occurred in 1365 when it became a vassal state of Ayutthaya, a rising power to the south. Sukhothai, which literally means “Dawn of Happiness”, may be the most romantic of all former Thai capital cities. The superb temples and monuments of this great city have been lovingly restored, and Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see for all travelers, particularly in the evening when the graceful Buddha images are illuminated by lights, while exploring the grassy, tree lined park via bicycle, or most spectacularly, during the Loy Krathong festival, when hundreds of candle-powered, floating lanterns are released into the sky. King Ramkhamhaeng, who reigned over Sukhothai’s golden age promoted religion and culture, and brought Chinese artisans back to the city to teach his people the art of pottery. Visitors can visit villages still engaged in the production of Sangkhalok Pottery as well as Hat Siao cloth, named for the village in Si Satchanalai district, just north of Sukhothai town. This famous hand-woven cloth is produced not far from Si Satchanalai Historical Park, where the ruins of another important historical city can be explored. As Sukhothai is such a popular tourist destination and is located along the way from Bangkok to Chiang Mai it can be reached via car, bus, or airplane. It is also possible to take a train to nearby Phitsanulok and then travel via bus to Sukhothai. Once there, it may be easier to get around the province with a car, but there are standard forms of local transport available for visitors staying in town: i.e. local bus, songtaew, motorbike taxi, tuk tuk, and samlor. There are also motorbike rentals in Sukhothai town and bike rentals available just outside Sukhothai Historical Park. By Air Bangkok Airways flies from Bangkok to Sukhothai daily, a 1-hour journey. sukhothai Historical Park The Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ruins of Sukhothai, capital of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in what is now the north of Thailand. It is located near the modern city of Sukhothai, capital of the province with the same name. The 70 square Kilometers of Sukothai Historical Park or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Muang Kaoâ&#x20AC;? (called locally) is full of the remains of the civilization that developed during the Sukothai era (founded 1238). Sukothai used to be the capital of Thailand, nowadays it is known as a popular tourists stop. Sukothai province was designated a World Heritage site in 1991. Sukothai is an historical city closely linked to Sri Satchanalai; it is a city of beautiful and unique arts. Ruins of the royal palaces, Buddhist temples, Buddha sculptures, the city gates, walls, and other interesting remains of Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first kingdom can be seen. The old city is rectangular 1,400 x 1,810 meters with four city gates and surrounded by three walls, separated by 20 meters of canal. Even though the Sukothai Historical Park is very big, the places inside are not very far apart. Ramkhamhaeng National Museum is a place that tourists should not miss. The museum displays basic knowledge about the Sukothai National Park and background information about the Sukothai kingdom. There are many antiques such as striking Sukothai sculpture, chinaware and statues. All of the remains show the prosperity of the Sukothai Kingdom. Most of the antiques were discovered during the restoration of Sukothai, others were recovered from nearby cities such as Srisatchanalai, Kampaengpetch, Petchaboon and Pijit. The ancient remains in Sukothai Historical Park are divided into two groups; the remains in the inner city and those in the outer city. There are 126 sites in Sukothai some of them still in good condition and others are in complete ruins. Therefore, before going to Sukothai, visitors should study some basic information about the site in order not to miss any important places. The inner city (Muang Chan Nai) Here is the royal palace of the king and some fine temples. It is the heart of the city and is still used today. The protection of the area was first announced in the Royal Gazette on June 6, 1962. In 1976 the restoration project was approved, and in July 1988 the park was officially opened. On December 12, 1991, it was declared a World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns together with the associated historic parks in Kamphaeng Phet and Si Satchanalai. อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย ครอบคลุมพื้นที่โบราณสถานกรุงสุโขทัย ศูนย์กลางการปกครองของอาณาจักรสุโขทัยซึ่งมีอ�ำนาจอยู่บริเวณภาคเหนือตอนล่าง ของประเทศไทยในช่วงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18-19 ตั้งอยู่ที่ต�ำบลเมืองเก่า (เขตเทศบาล ต�ำบลเมืองเก่า) อ�ำเภอเมืองสุโขทัย จังหวัดสุโขทัย ห่างจากตัวเมืองสุโขทัยปัจจุบัน (เขต เทศบาลเมืองสุโขทัยธานี) ไปทางทิศตะวันตกประมาณ 12 กิโลเมตร ตามทางหลวง แผ่นดินหมายเลข 12 (ถนนจรดวิถีถ่อง) เมืองโบราณที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องสัมพันธ์กับเมือง ศรีสัชนาลัยอย่างใกล้ชิดในด้านประวัติความเป็นมา เป็นแหล่งศิลปกรรมอันงดงามอ่อน ช้อย มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว เป็นแหล่งก�ำเนิดศิลปวัฒนธรรม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นตัวอักษรไทย การวางผังเมืองอย่างเป็นระบบ โดยเฉพาะในด้านศิลปกรรม พุทธประติมากรรมของ สุโขทัยได้รับการยอมรับกันว่าเป็นสุดยอดทางความงามของศิลปะไทย เมืองเก่าสุโขทัย มีโบราณสถานขนาดใหญ่ตระการตาหลากหลายรูปแบบ โดยเฉพาะพระพุทธรูปขนาด มหึมา ในพื้นที่ทั้งหมด 70 ตร.กม. ของอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัยหรือที่ชาวบ้านเรียกว่า “เมืองเก่า” นี้ เต็มไปด้วยร่องรอยความเจริญของอารยธรรมสมัยสุโขทัยที่เคยรุ่งเรืองเมื่อ กว่า 700 ปีก่อน โดยมีเมืองเก่าแห่งนี้เป็นราชธานี ปัจจุบันสถานที่แห่งนี้เป็นแหล่งท่อง เที่ยวศึกษาทางวัฒนธรรมที่ส�ำคัญอย่างยิ่งของเมืองไทย และมีความส�ำคัญระดับโลก เมื่อ ได้รับการประกาศเป็นมรดกโลกโดยองค์การยูเนสโกในปี พ.ศ. 2534 โบราณสถานในอุ ทยานฯ แบ่งออกเป็นสองส่วนใหญ่ๆ คือ ภายในเขตเมืองชั้นใน และภายนอกเขตเมือง ชั้นใน รวมแล้วถึง 126 แห่ง บางแห่งมีความส�ำคัญและมีสภาพค่อนข้างสมบูรณ์ ในขณะ ที่บางแห่งเป็นเพียงซากเจดีย์ มณฑป หรือสิ่งก่อสร้างเล็ก ๆ เท่านั้น ดังนั้นในการเที่ยว ชม นักท่องเที่ยวจึงควรศึกษาข้อมูลพื้นฐานเสียก่อน เพื่อจะได้ไม่พลาดสถานที่ส�ำคัญของ อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย ส�ำหรับผังเมืองของตัวเมืองเก่านั้นเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า ขนาด 1,400x1,810 ม. มีประตู เมืองสี่ประตู มีก�ำแพงดินล้อมรอบสามชั้น แต่ละชั้นมีคูน�้ำกว้าง 20 ม. คั่นกลาง แม้พื้นที่ อุทยานฯ จะกว้าง แต่ที่เที่ยวแต่ละแห่งก็อยู่ไม่ห่างไกลเกินไปนัก อีกทั้งยังมีแผนที่ภายใน อุทยานฯ ตั้งแสดงไว้เป็นจุด เพื่ออ�ำนวยความสะดวกส�ำหรับผู้ชม พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ รามค�ำแหง นับเป็นจุดส�ำคัญที่นักท่องเที่ยวไม่ควรพลาดชม เนื่องจากเป็นส่วนที่จะปูพื้นฐานความรู้เกี่ยวกับอุทยานฯ แห่งนี้ รวมทั้งเรื่องราวความ เป็นมาของอาณาจักรสุโขทัยที่กินอาณาเขตครอบคลุมภาคกลางตอนบนหลายจังหวัด โดยจัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุที่ส�ำคัญไว้มากมาย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นพระพุทธรูปศิลปะสุโขทัยอัน งดงาม เครื่องสังคโลก เทวรูป ฯลฯ อันเป็นรูปธรรมที่แสดงถึงความรุ่งเรืองของสุโขทัยได้ เป็นอย่างดี โบราณวัตถุที่จัดแสดงส่วนใหญ่ได้จากการเก็บรวบรวมขุดค้นในเมืองสุโขทัย บางส่วนได้จากบริเวณเมืองใกล้เคียง เช่น เมืองศรีสัชนาลัย ก�ำแพงเพชร เพชรบูรณ์ และ พิจิตร อีกส่วนหนึ่งเป็นของที่พระราชประสิทธิคุณ อดีตเจ้าอาวาสวัดราชธานี และชาว สุโขทัยร่วมกันมอบให้ ภายในเขตเมืองชั้นใน ในอดีตค�ำว่าเมืองชั้นใน หมายถึงเขตเมืองอันเป็นที่ตั้งของสถาน ที่ส�ำคัญ เช่น พระราชวังที่ประทับของกษัตริย์ วัดในเขตพระราชฐาน เป็นต้น ถือเป็นใจ กลางเมืองเก่าสุโขทัย ชื่อเมืองชั้นในได้น�ำมาใช้เรียกเขตแดนที่เที่ยวในปัจจุบันด้วย อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัยได้รับการประกาศคุ้มครองครั้งแรกตามประกาศราชกิจ จานุเบกษา เล่มที่ 92 ตอนที่ 112 ลงวันที่ 2 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2504 ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2519 โครงการฟื้นฟูอุทยานแห่งนี้ก็ได้รับการอนุมัติ และเปิดอย่างเป็นทางการในเดือน กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2531 โดยในวันที่ 12 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2534 องค์การยูเนสโกได้ประกาศ ให้อุทยานแห่งนี้เป็นแหล่งมรดกโลกร่วมกับอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ที่ก�ำแพงเพชรและ ศรีสัชนาลัยภายใต้ชื่อว่า “เมืองประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัยและเมืองบริวาร” (Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns) ISSUE 9

Wat Sra Si

The Wat Sra Si on a small island must have been quite magnificent; it has ten chedis influenced by the Ceylon-style. Six rows of columns and the beautiful statue of a seated Buddha in the pose of the Bhumispara-mudra remain from the large wiharn. The bot of the Wat Sra Si stands on an island in a pond covered with lotus flowers. The buildings of the wat on the bank, inhabited by monks, originate from a more recent period. The old laterite chedi in Singhalese style is decaying badly. In the mondhop is a stone footprint of Buddha, which was brought here from the Wat Phra Bat Yai; it is thought to have been discovered - according to an inscription - by King Liu Thai in 1359. In honor of this holy place the Loy Kratong festival (light festival) is celebrated here in November; the lake is transformed by thousands of tiny floating candles into a fascinating sea of light. วัดสระศรี วัดสระศรี เป็นวัดที่ตั้งอยู่ในทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของวัดมหาธาตุ ซึ่ง เป็นโบราณสถานส�ำคัญที่มีความงดงามมากอีกแห่งหนึ่ง เนื่องจากที่ตั้งอยู่กลางสระ น�้ำที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดชื่อว่า ตระพังตระกวน สิ่งส�ำคัญของวัดประกอบด้วย เจดีย์ทรง ระฆัง วิหารและโบสถ์กลางน�้ำ ด้านหน้าวิหารขนาดใหญ่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปูน ปั้นปางมารวิชัย มีเจดีย์ขนาดเล็ก ศิลปศรีวิชัยผสมลังกา ตั้งอยู่ทางด้านทิศใต้ มีซุ้ม พระพุทธรูป 4 ทิศ ด้านหน้ามีเกาะกลางน�้ำขนาดย่อมเป็นที่ตั้งของพระอุโบสถขนาด เล็ก วัดแห่งนี้ได้ชื่อว่าเป็นจุดที่มีทัศนียภาพที่สวยงาม เจดีย์ทรงระฆังของวัดสระศรี เป็นหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่แสดงถึง การ รับพุทธศาสนาจากลังกาของสุโขทัย บางครั้งจึงเรียกเจดีย์แบบนี้ว่า เจดีย์ทรง ลังกา ครั้งหนึ่งมีผู้ลักลอบขุดกรุของเจดีย์องค์นี้ ได้พบ เจดีย์จ�ำลอง (บรรจุอัฐิธาตุ) และแผ่นทองจารึกข้อความกล่าวถึงพระเถระผู้ใหญ่มาด�ำเนินการสร้างเจดีย์เพื่อ บรรจุพระอัฐิธาตุของพระมหาธรรมราชาลิไท จารึกหลักนี้จึงเรียกว่า จารึกวัดสระ ศรี และสถูปเจดีย์จ�ำลอง ดังกล่าว ปัจจุบันจัดแสดงอยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ รามค�ำแหง สุโขทัย ส่วนโบสถ์ที่อยู่กลางน�้ำก็เป็นความเชื่อถือแบบพุทธที่ใช้น�้ำใน ความหมายของ ความบริสุทธิ์ของขอบเขต เรียก ว่า อุทกสีมา หรือ นทีสีมา ที่กันไว้ เป็นเขตส�ำหรับให้พระสงฆ์ท�ำสังฆกรรม พระวิหาร มีขนาดค่อนข้างใหญ่เก้าห้อง ผนังก่อด้วยอิฐถือปูน เสาแปด เหลี่ยมก่อด้วยศิลาแลง ด้านหน้ามีมุขเด็จและบันไดทางขึ้นทั้งสองด้าน ภายใน ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้นปางมารวิชัย พุทธลักษณะงดงาม พระเกศาขมวด ใหญ่ ยอดเป็นเปลว ประดิษฐานที่ฐานชุกชี เจดีย์ประธาน ตั้งอยู่ด้านหลังพระวิหาร เป็นเจดีย์ทรงทรงระฆัง หรือทรง ลังกา ขนาดใหญ่ ฐานชั้นล่างเป็นฐานบัวลูกแก้วอกไก่ยกสูง ก่อเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส ส่วนบนเป็นชั้นบัวถลา องค์ระฆัง บัลลังก์ ก้านฉัตรและปลียอด ภายในได้มีการขุด พบเจดีย์จ�ำลองส�ำริด เจดีย์ดีบุก กรวยชิน กรวยเหล็ก โดยสมบัติดังกล่าวปัจจุบันได้ เก็บรักษาไว้ที่พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติรามค�ำแหง เจดีย์ขนาดเล็ก ศิลปะศรีวิชัยผสมลังกา ตั้งอยู่ด้านข้างเจดีย์ประธาน รอบเจดีย์มีซุ้มประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปทั้งสี่ทิศ ด้านหน้าเจดีย์ประดิษฐานด้วย พระพุทธรูปปางลีลา ศิลปะสุโขทัย พระอุโบสกลางน�้ำ ตั้งอยู่ด้านหน้าพระวิหาร บนเกาะที่มีขนาดเล็ก เป็น พระอุโบสถสองห้อง เหลือเฉพาะส่วนฐานและเสา มีเสมาหินชนวนปักอยู่โดยรอบ อันเป็นการแสดงเขตของพุทธาวาส

Phra Ajana Srichoom temple พระอจนะ วัดศรีชุม T he northern inner z one

In the northern part of the inner city, are many interesting places that are not as crowded as the inner city. There are plans that show where each attraction is situated. Many places such as Pra Ajana, Srichoom temple are well known to history lovers. Wat Si Chum has one of the largest seated Buddha images in Thailand. This temple was built in the fourteenth century and the Buddha image that you see here, is called Phra Atchana which measures nearly 15 metres high. There is stairway within its wall that leads up to the roof, but unfortunately one is not permitted to climb these stairs due to the precarious nature of the stairs. Northwest of the city wall, Wat Si Chum is much visited with a well known large sitting Buddha image. The image is also mentioned in the Sukhothai Stone Inscription No.1, and Phra Atchana (Ajana) is the name of the Buddha image. There are ancient drawings on the ceiling of the mandapa surrounding the Buddha, telling the stories of the former incarnations of the Buddha (Jatakas). Wat Si Chum [ the temple of the bodhi tree ] is a 13th C temple. The buddha image is covered in stucco and is seated inside a square brick Mandala building with a tapering wall structure which opens in the center of the top. Wat Si Chum is situated about 1,500 metres north of Wat Mahathat, with a moat serving as the boundary. Although there are only the remains of a small viharn and mondop, this wat is of importance. The roof of the mondop has disintegrated, exposing an enormous seated stucco Buddha over 11 metres in width called Phra Achana. The mondop is 32 metres square, 15 metres high and the walls are 3 metres thick. A passageway in the inner left wall leads to a stairway to the

roof. On the ceiling of the passageway are more than fifty engraved slate slabs, dating back to the mid 14th century, illustrating scenes from the Jataka tales, stories of the Buddha’s previous lives. It is believed that the ritual of circumambulation ( or climbing of the stairs ) was a symbolic ascent to Buddhahood. วัดศรีชมุ หรือ วัดฤๅษีชมุ เป็นโบราณสถานในเขตอุทยานประวัตศิ าสตร์ สุโขทัย จังหวัดสุโขทัย ตัววัดเป็นโบราณสถานตัง้ อยูท่ างทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ นอก ก�ำแพงเมืองสุโขทัย วัดนี้เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัยองค์ใหญ่ซึ่งมี นามว่า “พระอจนะ” องค์พระพุทธรูปประดิษฐานอยู่ในมณฑป พระพุทธอจนะ เป็นทีเ่ ลือ่ งลือถึงความศักดิส์ ทิ ธิแ์ ละมีมนต์เสน่หแ์ ละเอกลักษณ์ชวนให้นกั ท่องเทีย่ ว มาเที่ยวชมและสักการะอย่างไม่ขาดสาย พระอจนะ “อจนะ” แปลว่า “ผู้ไม่หวั่น ไหว ผู้มั่นคง”“ผู้ที่ควรแก่การเคารพกราบไหว้” ขนาดใหญ่ หน้าตักกว้าง 11.30 เมตร ลักษณะของวิหารสร้างเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมลักษณะคล้ายมณฑป แต่หลังคาพัง ทลายลงมาหมดแล้ว เหลือเพียงผนังทั้งสี่ด้าน ผนังแต่ละด้าน ก่ออิฐถือปูนอย่าง แน่นหนา ผนังทางด้านใต้มีช่องให้คนเข้าไปภายใน และเดินขึ้นไปตามทางบันได แคบ ๆ ถึงผนังด้านข้างขององค์พระอัจนะ หรือสามารถขึ้นไปถึงสันผนังด้านบน ได้ ภายในช่องก�ำแพงตามฝาผนังมีภาพเขียนเก่าแก่แต่เลอะเลือนเกือบหมด ภาพ เขียนนี้มีอายุเกือบ 700 ปี นอกจากนี้แล้วบนเพดานช่องบันไดยังมีแผ่นหินชนวน ขนาดใหญ่แกะสลักลวดลายเรื่องชาดกต่าง ๆ มีจ�ำนวนทั้งหมด 50 ภาพ เมื่อเดิน ตามช่องทางบันไดขึน้ ไปจะโผล่บนหลังคาวิหารมองเห็นทิวทัศน์อนั งดงามของเมือง เก่าสุโขทัยได้โดยรอบวัดศรีชมุ นัน้ สันนิษฐานว่าสร้างในสมัยพ่อขุนรามค�ำแหง โดย ปรากฏอยูใ่ นศิลาจารึกสุโขทัยหลักที่ 1 ว่า “เบือ้ งตีนนอนเมืองสุโขทัยนีม้ พี ระอจนะ มีปราสาท” พระประธานในมณฑปจึงมีชื่อว่า “พระอจนะ” ซึ่งสันนิษฐานว่าใน อดีตตัวมณฑปน่าจะมีหลังคาคล้ายโดม ตัวมณฑปนั้นตั้งอยู่บนฐานสูง ด้านหน้า เปิดเป็นช่องเห็นพระพักตร์พระพุทธรูปงดงามแต่ไกล ISSUE 9 53

Wat Si Sawai

วัดศรีสวาย Wat Si Sawai is situated 350 metres from the south of Wat Mahathat. Its three prangs (imitated Hindu Shikhara Vimanas) are regarded as ancient edifice of considerable significance. Demarcated by a wall, the three prangs were built in Lop Buri art style. Their slender forms on low bases are decorated with stucco, some designs are similar to those on Chinese ware of Yuan dynasty. Found in situ, a carved lintel depicting the reclining Vishnu on Ananta Naga(Anantasayana), fragments of Hindu god images and linga, all point out that this temple was originally a Hindu sanctuary and was later transformed into a Buddhist temple with some expansion of the frontal part in form of a vihara. Wat catches the eye at Wat Si Sawai are the three Khmer-style prangs. Wat Si Sawai initially started off as a Hindu temple during the Khmer period. Hindu artifacts found at the temple stylistically indicate it was constructed during the 12- or 13th century. Later on, during the Sukhothai Kingdom, Wat Si Sawai became a Theravada Buddhist temple, and assembly halls were added during that time. วัดศรีสวาย ตั้งอยู่ห่างออกไปทางตอนใต้ของวัดมหาธาตุ ประมาณ 350 เมตร โบราณสถานส�ำคัญทีต่ งั้ อยูใ่ นก�ำแพงแก้ว ประกอบ ด้วยปรางค์ 3 องค์ รูปแบบศิลปะลพบุรี ลักษณะของปรางค์ค่อนข้าง เพรียว ตั้งอยู่บนฐานเตี้ย ๆ ลวดลายปูนปั้นบางส่วนเหมือนลายบน เครื่องถ้วยจีน สมัยราชวงศ์หยวน ได้พบทับหลังสลักเป็นรูปนารายณ์ บรรทมสินธุ์ ชิ้นส่วนของเทวรูป และศิวลึงค์ที่แสดงให้เห็นว่าเคยเป็น เทวสถานในศาสนาฮินดูมาก่อน แล้วแปลงเป็นพุทธสถานโดยต่อเติม วิหารขึ้นที่ด้านหน้า แล้วเป็นวัดในพุทธศาสนาภายหลัง วัดศรีสวาย เดิมเป็นเทวสถานในศาสนาพราหมณ์หรือฮินดู ลักษณะเป็น ปรางค์สามยอดแบบขอม มีคูน�้ำล้อมรอบปรางค์สามองค์ โบราณสถาน ดังกล่าวนี้มีที่มาจากทรงปราสาทแบบขอม แต่ได้รับการดัดแปลงแตก ต่างจากต้นแบบ เช่นส่วนประดับของปราสาทขอมที่เรียกว่า บันแถลง กลายเป็นรูปกลีบขนุน และปูนปั้นประดับกลีบขนุนเป็นรูปครุฑยุดนาค และเทวดา ปรางค์วัดศรีสวายจึงแตกต่างจากปรางค์สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ซึ่งมีต้นแบบจาก ปรางค์ในศิลปะขอมและคล้ายคลึงแบบขอมมากกว่า ปรางค์ในแบบของช่างสุโขทัย เมื่อครั้งพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จประพาสเมือง สุโขทัย ทรงพบรูปพระอิศวรและและโบราณวัตถุหินจ�ำหลักเป็นทับ หลังรูปพระนารายณ์บรรทมสินธุ์ รูปพระนารายณ์สี่กร และชิ้นส่วน ของเทวรูปและศิวลึงค์ท�ำด้วยส�ำริด จึงทรงสันนิษฐานว่า วัดศรีสวาย นี้คงเป็นสถานที่พวกพราหมณ์ใช้ท�ำพิธีโล้ชิงช้า (ตรียัมปวาย) แต่ต่อมา เมื่อคนไทยเข้ามาครอบครองกรุงสุโขทัย วัดนี้จึงถูกดัดแปลงให้เป็นวัด ทางพระพุทธศาสนา ISSUE 9

Wat Sapan Hin

The stone bridge วัดสะพานหิน The Wat Sapan Hin lies on a hill at the edge of the Yom plain and offers a fine view of the mountains and Si Satchanalai. A paved path leads to the monastery giving it the name “temple of the stone bridge”. In this wat King Ramkhamhaeng celebrated the Thot-Kathin festival annually in October, the end of the Buddhist fasting period. Tall stucco covered laterite columns once supported the wiharn. There is an impressive 12.5-m (41ft) high statue of a standing Buddha in Sukhothai style leaning against a brick wall in the open, the right hand raised in a protective gesture. It is deeply revered by the population of the surrounding area.Situated on a 200 m. hill, the sanctuary is approached by a pathway of slate slabs.

วัดสะพานหิน หรือ วัดสะพานหิน วัดนี้ตั้งอยู่บนเนิน เขานอกเขตก�ำแพงเมืองเก่าสุโขทัยทางทิศตะวันตก ทางเดินขึ้น ปูลาดด้วยหินชนวนจากตีนเขาขึ้นไปเป็นระยะทาง 300 เมตร โบราณสถานด้านทิศตะวันตกของก�ำแพงเมืองที่มีความส�ำคัญเป็น อย่างยิ่ง วัดนี้ตั้งอยู่บนเนินลูกเตี้ยสูงประมาณ 200 เมตร มีทาง เดินปูด้วยหินชนวนแผ่นบางๆ จนถึงบริเวณลานวัด มีวิหารก่อด้วย อิฐ มีเสาก่อด้วยศิลาแลง 4 แถว 5 ห้อง ประดิษฐานพระประธาน เป็นพระพุทธรูปยืนขนาดใหญ่ พระปางประทานอภัยสูง 12.50 เมตร เรียกว่า “พระอัฏฐารศ”พระอัฏฐารสซึ่งหมายถึงพระพุทธ รูปประทับยืนที่นิยมสร้างกันในสมัยสุโขทัย สันนิษฐานกันว่า พระ อัฎฐารสนี้ คือพระพุทธรูปยืนขนาดใหญ่ที่ศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 1 กล่าว ถึงเมืองสุโขทัยสมัยพ่อขุนรามค�ำแหงมหาราชว่า “…ในกลางอรัญ ญิก มีพิหารอันณึ่งมนใหญ่ สูงงามแก่กม มีพระอัฎฐารสอันณึ่งลุก ยืน… “ และสันนิษฐานกันอีกว่า วัดสะพานหินนี้น่าจะเป็นวัดที่ พ่อขุนรามค�ำแหงมหาราชทรงช้างเผือกชื่อ รูจาคีรี ขึ้นไปนบพระ ทุกวันข้างขึ้น 15 ค�่ำและข้างแรม 15 ค�่ำ ส�ำหรับพระอัฏฐารสที่วัด สะพานหินเป็นพระพุทธรูปปางประทานอภัยสร้างตามคติของลังกา ที่ว่า พระพุทธเจ้ามีความสูงเท่ากับ 18 ศอก โดยสร้างเป็นพระพุทธ รูปยกพระหัตถ์ข้างใดข้างหนึ่งขึ้น หันฝ่าพระหัตถ์ออก ปลายนิ้ว พระหัตถ์ตั้งขึ้นเรียกว่าการแสดงปางประทานอภัย

King Ramkhamhaeng the Great Monument Pho Khun Ram Khamhaeng was the third king of the Phra Ruang dynasty, ruling the Sukhothai Kingdom (a forerunner of the modern kingdom of Thailand) from 1278–1298, during its most prosperous era. He is credited with the creation of the Thai alphabet and the firm establishment of Theravada Buddhism as the state religion of the kingdom. Recent scholarship has cast doubt on his role, however, noting that much of the information relating to his rule may have been fabricated in the 19th century in order to legitimize the Siamese state in the face of colonial threats. According to conventional Thai history, Ramkhamhaeng is credited with developing the Thai alphabet (Lai Sue Thai) from Sanskrit, Pali and the Grantha script. His rule is often cited by supporters of the Thai monarchy as evidence of a “benevolent monarchy” that continues today. The Ramkhamhaeng stele Much of the above biographical information comes from a stone inscription on the Ramkhamhaeng stele, now in the National Museum in Bangkok. The formal name of this stone is The King Ram Khamhaeng Inscription Documentary heritage inscribed on the Memory of the World Register in 2003 by UNESCO.

Si Satchanalai Historical Park Si Satchanalai Historical Park, is situated on the bank of the Yom River. Important ancient monuments are contained within the old city walls and outside the city walls. Historical Park is a World Heritage Site Before Sukhothai era it was Si Satchanalai town. A feature of Sukhothai temple structural design is the lotus-bud pagoda. However at Sukhothai also Sri Lanka and Srivijaya type memorials are present. Mainly of the place of worship structures in this Historical Park were raised for the period of the Kingdom of Sukhothai era (1235-1438). The prehistoric town, once called Muang Chaliang, was named Si Satchanalai during the reign of Phra Ruang when a new governmental core was established to reinstate Chaliang. When Pho Khun Ramkhamhaeng (The third king of Sukhothai era) has come to succeed to the throne as king of Sukhothai , he reconstruct and development in all aspects Satchanalai city. There are many kings in Sukhothai era. Even when Sukhothai fall under the authority of Ayutthaya during the early royalty of the Phra Ruang dynasty would be honored to governance in the old city Satchanalai. Si Satchanalai Historical Park has been honored as a World Heritage (World Heritage) as well as the Sukhothai Historical Park since 1991. Si Satchanalai Historical Park is open daily from 08.00-17.00 hours and admission is 40 Baht. Bicycles are provided for rent at 30 Baht a day, and elephant rides around the park are available at 100 Baht per person per 30 minutes.

อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย เป็นอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ของ ประเทศไทยตั้งอยู่ที่ต�ำบลศรีสัชนาลัย อ�ำเภอศรีสัชนาลัย จังหวัดสุโขทัย มี โบราณสถานทั้งหมด 215 แห่ง ส�ำรวจค้นพบแล้ว 204 แห่ง รวมทั้งสุสาน วัดชมชื่น และเตาสังคโลกโบราณ ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ต�ำบลศรีสัชนาลัย ต�ำบล สารจิตร ต�ำบลหนองอ้อ และต�ำบลท่าชัย เมืองโบราณศรีสัชนาลัย อยู่ในเขต หมู่บ้านพระปรางค์ ต�ำบลศรีสัชนาลัย มีพื้นที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 45.14 ตาราง กิโลเมตร เดิมชื่อว่า “เมืองเชลียง” แล้วเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “ศรีสัชนาลัย” ใน สมัยกษัตริย์ราชวงศ์พระร่วงขึ้นครองกรุงสุโขทัย และได้สร้างเมืองขึ้นใหม่ เป็นศูนย์กลางการปกครองแทนเมืองเชลียง ในปัจจุบันจากการประเมิน ของกรมศิลปากร นับว่ามีการต่อเติมโบราณสถานจากสภาพเดิมน้อยกว่าที่ ใด ยังคงรักษาภูมิทัศน์ของเมืองประวัติศาสตร์ไว้ได้ครบถ้วน เมื่อวันที่ 12 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2534 อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย พร้อมด้วย อุทยาน ประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย และอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ก�ำแพงเพชร ได้รับเกียรติให้ลง ทะเบียนเป็นมรดกโลกจากองค์การยูเนสโก ภายใต้ชื่อว่า “เมืองประวัติศาสตร์ สุโขทัยและเมืองบริวาร” (Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns) อุทยานฯ เปิดให้นักท่องเที่ยวเข้าชมได้ทุกวัน ตั้งแต่เวลา 08.00 - 17.00 น. อัตราค่าเข้าชม ชาวไทย 10 บาท ชาวต่างชาติ 40 บาท หรือสามารถซื้อตั๋วรวมได้ ชาวไทย 30 บาท ชาวต่างชาติ 150 บาท ในกรณี ที่น�ำยานพาหนะเข้าภายในเขตอุทยานฯ เสียค่าธรรมเนียมอีก ราคา 10 - 50 บาท และทางอุทยานฯ มีบริการรถรางน�ำชมโบราณสถานทั่วบริเวณชาวไทย 10 บาท ชาวต่างชาติ 30 บาท

Wat Phra Si Ratanamahathat

ว ัดพระศรีร ัตนมหาธาตุ This is a large historic temple complex located

to the southeast of Si Satchanalai town. The decorative stucco bearing the Bayon art style of ancient Khmer found at the main entrance of the temple as well as archaeological evidence excavated here; including foundations of earlier brick structures found beneath 2 buildings called Wiharn (vihara) Luang and Wiharn Phra Song Phi Nong and fragments of roofing tile with designs in Bayon art style, point out clearly that Wat Phra Si Ratanamahathat was originally founded before Sukhothai kingdom. Some scholars suggest that it was firstly constructed during the times of Pho Khun Si Nao Nam Thum, or around the early 13th century AD. ตั้งอยุ่ทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้นอกก�ำแพงเมืองศรีสัชนาลัย ตรงช่วงแหลมโค้งข้อศอกของแม่นำ�้ ยมโดยหันหน้าวัดไปทางทิศ ตะวันออก วัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุเป็นกลุ่มโบราณสถานขนาด ใหญ่ ปัจจุบันมี ฐานะเป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นราชวรวิหาร วัด พระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุ เชื่อว่าเป็นศูนย์กลางของเมืองศรีสัชนาลัย ตั้งแต่สมัยพ่อขุนศรีนาวน�ำถุม (ประมาณ พ.ศ.1780) เป็นต้นมา โดยมีหลักฐานยอดซุ้มปูน ปั้นประตูทางเข้าวัด ซึ่งมีลักษณะรูป แบบศิลปะสมัยบายนและหลักฐานจากการขุดค้นทางโบราณคดี ทีพ่ บทาง ศาสนสถานก่ออิฐอยูใ่ ต้วหิ ารหลวง และวิหารสองพีน่ อ้ ง โดยมีศิลปวัตถุส�ำคัญ คือ กระเบื้องเชิงชายท�ำเป็นรูปนางอัปสร ถือดอกบัว และท�ำเป็นรูปเทวดา เทพธิดา หลักฐานต่าง ๆ เหล่า นี้ยืนยันอายุสมัยของวัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุได้ว่ามีอายุมาแล้ว ตั้งแต่ พุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 จนถึงปัจจุบันก็ยังเป็นพระอาราม หลวงชั้นราชวรวิหาร

Wat Chang Lom

วัดช้างล้อม

This temple is located almost at the centre of the historic town, and is situated on the plain to the east of Khao Phanom Phloeng, an important low hill inside the town. The most important historic buildings at this temple is the main chedi of Sri Lankan style bounded by a demarcation wall. The base of the chedi is high and square in its shape. The front side of the base was decorated with 8 sculptures of elephant while other sides were decorated with 9 sculptures of elephant. There was one sculpture at each corner of the base. Altogether there were 39 sculptures of elephant around the base. The sculptures of elephant at Wat Chang Lom are quite different from those found at other temples. These represent the fully standing elephants and are taller than the life elephant. Some scholars believe that this was the temple mentioned in the text of the Stone Inscription Number 1, made by King Ramkhamhaeng in 1286 AD, as the place where the king dug up the Buddha remains in order to make a homage to the remains before he reburied and built a chedi over the remains. วัดช้างล้อมตัง้ อยูภ่ ายในก�ำแพงเมืองกลางตัวเมืองศรีสชั นาลัย บน ที่ราบเชิงเขาด้านทิศใต้ของเขาพนมเพลิงสิ่งส�ำคัญคือเจดีย์ประธานทรงลังกา ตั้งอยู่ภายในก�ำแพงแก้วสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส มีซุ้มประตูทั้ง 4 ทิศ โดยประตูด้าน หน้าและด้านหลังเป็นประตูเข้าออก ส่วนประตูด้านข้างเป็นประตูหลอก(ตัน) ยอดท�ำคล้ายปรางค์ เจดียป์ ระธานเป็นทรงลังกา ตัง้ อยูบ่ นฐานประทักษิณรูป สี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส มีช้างปูนปั้นเต็มตัวประดับโดยรอบฐานทั้ง 4 ด้าน ด้านละ 9 เชือก (ยกเว้นด้านหนึ่งซึ่งเป็นบันไดทางขึ้นมีเพียง 8 เชือก) และที่มุมอีก 4 เชือก รวมเป็น 39 เชือก ช้างที่ประดับตรงมุมจะมีขนาดใหญ่ และมีลวดลาย ปูนปั้นประดับที่คอ ตันขาและข้อเท้า ระหว่างรูปช้างจะมีเสาประทีปสลับอยู่ ด้านหน้าช้าง แต่ละเชือกจะมีพุ่มดอกบัวตูมปูนปั้นวางอยู่ วัดช้างล้อมที่เมือง ศรีสชั นาลัย ช้างมีลกั ษณะเด่นกว่าช้างปูนปัน้ ทีว่ ดั อืน่ ๆ คือยืนเต็มตัวแยกออก จากผนัง มีขนาดสูงใหญ่กว่าช้างจริง และด้านหน้ามีพมุ่ ดอกบัวปูนปัน้ ประดับ ไว้ นักวิชาการ บางท่านสันนิษฐานว่าวัดช้างล้อมนี้น่าจะเป็นวัดเดียวกันกับที่ ปรากฏในศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 1 ที่กล่าวไว้ว่าในปี พ.ศ. 1892 พ่อขุนรามค�ำแหง ให้ขดุ เอาพระธาตุขนึ้ มาท�ำบูชา และเฉลิม ฉลอง หลังจากนัน้ จึงฝังลงในกลาง เมืองศรีสชั นาลัย และก่อพระเจดียท์ บั ลงไป โบราณสถานภายในวัดทีย่ งั มีหลัก ฐาน คือ วิหารอยู่ด้านหน้าเจดีย์ประธาน นอกจากนั้นเป็นวิหารขนาดเล็กๆ 2 หลัง และ เจดีย์รายอีก 2 องค์

Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo

วัดเจดีย์เจ็ดแถว

This temple is located opposite to Wat Chang Lom. The important buildings in this temple are the main chedi with lotus-bud shape top, a vihara building and 33 subordinate chedis. A demarcation wall bound all. A temple ditch originally surrounded the whole building complex. This temple has been called Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo, means the temple with seven rows of chedis, because there are many subordinate chedis here. The subordinate chedis are quite famous. These bear various styles of art such as Sri Lankan, Pagan and Srivijaya styles. The late Prince Damrongrajanuphap suggested that this might be the temple where the cremated remains of the Sukhothai royal family were kept. ตั้งอยู่ค่อนข้างกลางตัวเมือง ตรงข้ามกับวัดช้างล้อม วัดนี้หันหน้าไปทาง ทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โบราณสถานที่ส�ำคัญคือ เจดีย์ประธานรูปดอกบัว ตูมอยู่ด้านหลังพระวิหาร และมีเจดีย์รายรวม ทั้งอาคารขนาดเล็กแบบ ต่าง ๆ กัน 33 องค์ มีก�ำแพงแก้วล้อมรอบอีกชั้นหนึ่ง นอกก�ำแพงมีโบสถ์ และบ่อน�้ำ เดิมมีคูน�้ำล้อมรอบ เจดีย์รายที่วัดเจดีย์เจ็ดแถวมีรูปแบบที่ได้รับอิทธิพลศิลปะจากที่ต่าง ๆ หลายแห่งเช่น ลังกาและพุกาม ด้านหลังเจดีย์ประธานทีเจดีย์รายที่มี ลักษณะเด่นคือฐานเป็นเจดีย์สี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัสยอด เป็นทรงกลม ภายใน เจดีย์มีซุ้มโถง และสามารถเข้าไปได้ และมีซุ้มเล็กประกอบซุ้มโถงอยู่ ทั้ง 2 ข้าง ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้นปางลีลา ส่วนซุ้มโถงเป็นที่ ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปยืน ปูนปั้น และมีภาพจิตรกรรมใช้สีแบบเอก รงค์เป็นภาพอดีตพระพุทธเจ้า และเหล่าเทวดากษัตริย์ที่มาแวดล้อม ถวายดอกไม้ ส่วนซุ้มจรนัมด้านหลังของเรือนธาตุจะท�ำเป็นพระพุทธรูป นาคปรก อย่างสวยงาม ต่อจากเรือนธาตุเป็นเจดีย์ทรงกลม 5 องค์โดยมี องค์ใหญ่เป็นประธานและมีเจดีย์ประจ�ำมุม 4 องค์ ประดับด้วยพระพุทธ รูปปั้นปางลีลา ในซุ้มเรือนธาตุ วัดเจดีย์เจ็ดแถวเป็นชื่อที่ตั้งขึ้นภายหลังโดยราษฎรในท้องถิ่น สาเหตุที่ เรียกเนื่องจากพบเจดีย์จ�ำนวนมากมายหลายแถวภายในวัด และสมเด็จ พระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอกรมพระยาด�ำรงราชานุภาพ ทรงสันนิษฐานว่าวัด เจดีย์เจ็ดแถวเป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระอัฐิของพระราชวงศ์สุโขทัย ISSUE 9

Wat Nang Phaya ว ัดนางพญา The main chedi of Sri Lankan style is the focus

of this temple. This chedi is supported by a high base, which was once decorated with sculptures of elephant similar to Wat Chang Lom. Another important and famous historic structure here is a vihara building made of laterite blocks. The exterior face of the vihara’s walls were decorated with highly elaborated stucco bearing the art style Ayutthaya period. ตัง้ อยู่แนวเดียวกันกับวัดสวนแก้วอุทยานใหญ่ใกล้กับ ก�ำแพงเมืองด้านทิศใต้วัดหันหน้าไปทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ สิ่ง ก่อสร้างส�ำคัญประกอบด้วย เจดีย์ประธานเป็นเจดีย์ทรงกลมตั้งอยู่ บน ฐานประทักษิณ แต่เดิมมีช้างปูนปั้นประดับสลับกับเสาประทีป ปูนปั้นเช่นเดียวกับวัดช้างล้อม ซุ้มด้านหน้ามีบันไดทางขึ้นจนถึง ภายในโถงเจดีย์และสามารถเดินได้รอบโถงตรง กลางโถงมี แกน เจดียป์ ระดับด้วยลวดลายปูนปัน้ ตรงกลางมีซมุ้ ประดิษฐานพระพุทธ รูปทั้ง 4 ด้าน แต่ถูกท�ำลาย วิหารก่อด้วยศิลาแลงมีมุขหน้าและมุข หลัง ผนังวิหารเจาะช่องแสง ผนังด้านทิศใต้ยัง มีลวดลานปูนปั้น ที่สวนงาม ลวดลายปูนปั้นท�ำเป็นกึ่งมนุษย์กึ่งวานรก�ำลังวิ่ง แต่ถูก ท�ำลายไปบางส่วน แต่ถ้าได้ศึกษาลวดลายโดยละเอียดแล้วก็พบว่า ยังเห็นได้ชัดเจน นอกจากนี้ยังท�ำเป็น รูปลวดลายพรรณพฤกษา และรูปเทพพนม ซึ่งเป็นฝีมือชั้นครู รูปแบบศิลปะอยู่ในสมัยอยุธยา ตอนต้น เป็นวัดทีม่ ลี วดลายปูนปัน้ งดงามมาก ปรากฏอยูบ่ นซากผนัง วิหารด้านตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ ซึ่งเป็น วิหารขนาดเจ็ดห้อง ภายใน วิหารตามเสาทุกด้านมีเทพนมและลวดลายต่างๆ ท�ำด้วยสังคโลก ไม่เคลือบ เจดีย์ของวัดก่อด้วยศิลาแลงสูงใหญ่ และมีสภาพสมบูรณ์ รอบฐานเจดีย์ มีเสาโคมไฟโดยตลอด มีบันไดขึ้นไปบนเจดีย์

ศาลพระแม่ย่าเป็นปูชนียสถานที่ส�ำคัญของสุโขทัย เป็นที่ เคารพสักการะของประชาชน ทั้งในจังหวัดสุโขทัยประประชาชนโดย ทั่วไป ใครมีเรื่องทุกข์ร้อนก็จะไปกราบไหว้ตั้งจิตอธิษฐานขอความช่วย เหลือจากพระแม่ย่า เล่ากันว่ามักจะได้ดังที่ขอ ปัจจุบันศาลพระแม่ย่า จัดสร้างขึ้นใหม่ เริ่มด�ำเนินการเมื่อ ปี พ.ศ. 2537 สมัยที่นายเกียรติพันธ์ น้อยมณี เป็นผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัด โดยกราบบังคมทูลเชิญสมเด็จพระเทพ รัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เสด็จฯ มาทรงวางศิลาฤกษ์ เมื่อวัน ที่ 12 กันยายน 2537 และด�ำเนินการก่อสร้างเสร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2541 มี การท�ำพิธีอันเชิญพระแม่ย่าเข้าประดิษฐาน ณ ศาลแห่งใหม่ เมื่อวันที่ 6 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2541 และจังหวัดสุโขทัย ได้จัดให้งานพระแม่ย่าเป็น งานประจ�ำปีของจังหวัดสุโขทัย โดยจะจัดในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ของทุกปี ส�ำหรับพระแม่ย่าตามความรู้สึกของชาวสุโขทัย เข้าใจ ว่าเป็นรูปนางเสือง พระราชมารดาพ่อขุนรามค�ำแหงมหาราช สมัย นั้นถือว่าพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นพ่อเมืองเหมือนพ่อคนทั้งเมือง ลูก ๆ จึงเรียกว่า “ย่า” เพราะฉะนั้นการเรียกชื่อ ถ�้ำแม่ย่า และเขาแม่ ย่า ชาวสุโขทัยจึงเรียกตามความเชื่อดังกล่าวข้างต้น รวมทั้งเรียกตาม โบราณวัตถุ คือ พระพุทธรูปแม่ย่าประดิษฐานอยู่ครั้งแรกเป็นส�ำคัญ ในปี พ.ศ. 2457 สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาด�ำรง ราชานุภาพ องค์พระบิดาแห่งประวัติศาสตร์ไทย ก็ได้ทรงออกค้นหา “พระ ขพุงผีเทวดา” ที่บริเวณทิศเบื้องหัวนอนเมืองสุโขทัย ตามที่ศิลาจารึกบอก ไว้ ทรงคาดหมายว่าน่าจะสร้างขึ้นไว้เป็นองค์เทวรูป ตั้งประดิษฐ์ไว้มากกว่า ที่จะมีเพียงแต่ชื่อ และก็ทรงพบ องค์เทวรูปผู้หญิงสลักด้วยแท่งศิลาอยู่ใน

ถ�้ำที่ภูเขาแห่งหนึ่งห่างจากเมืองสุโขทัยเก่าไปทางทิศใต้ราว 7 กิโลเมตร จึง ทรงพระวินิจฉัยว่า เทวรูปหินนี้ที่จะใช่ “พระขพุงผี” ผู้รักษาเมืองสุโขทัย ไว้ตามที่ศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 1 จารึกบอกไว้ด้วยว่าเทวรูปอื่นในเทือกเขาหลวง นี้ไม่มีที่ไหนอีกแล้ว และเทวรูปนี้ชาวบ้านแถบนั้นต่าง พากันเคารพนับถือ อย่างยิ่ง สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาด�ำรงราชานุภาพทรงพระ วิตกว่า ถ้าปล่อยให้องค์เทวรูปตั้งอยู่ในป่าอย่างนี้ต่อไป อาจสูญหายหรือ ถูกท�ำลายให้ช�ำรุดพังลงได้ ควรอัญเชิญไปเก็บรักษาไว้ที่ในตัวเมืองใหม่ ต่อมาเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2460 พระยารามราชภักดี (ใหญ่ ศรลัมภ์) เจ้าเมืองสมัยนั้น จึงอัญเชิญมาไว้ ณ ศาลากลางจังหวัด องค์เทวรูป (พระแม่ ย่า) เมื่อย้ายไปอยู่เมืองสุโขทัยใหม่ ๆ ยังไม่มีเทวาลัย เป็นที่ประดิษฐาน คง เก็บรักษาไว้ในพิพิธภัณฑ์ศาลากลางจังหวัดสุโขทัย เคยย้ายไปประดิษฐาน ในศาลาสวรรคโลกระยะหนึ่ง (สมัยเมื่อเปลี่ยนจังหวัดสุโขทัยเป็นจังหวัด สวรรคโลก เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2475) แต่ภายหลังก็อัญเชิญกลับจังหวัดสุโขทัย ตามเดิมและต่อมาในระยะหลังจากนั้น เกิดประเพณีแห่แหนองค์เทวรูป (พระแม่ย่า) ในวันมหาสงกรานต์ ถือกันว่าท�ำให้ฝนตก ซึ่งปรากฏว่ามีฝน ตกใหญ่ทุกครั้งที่น�ำเทวรูปองค์จริงออกแห่ให้ ประชาชนสรงน�้ำเป็นที่น่า อัศจรรย์ จนนายเชื่อ ศิริสนธิ ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดสุโขทัยสมัยนั้น เกรงว่าจะ มีการแห่งพระแม่ย่าจนอาจจะตกหักเสียหายขึ้นได้ จึงได้สร้างเทวาลัยเป็น ที่ประดิษฐานอยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น�้ำยมฝั่งตะวันออก ตรงหน้าศาลากลางจังหวัด สุโขทัย เรียกว่า “ศาลพระแม่ย่า” องค์เทวรูป (พระแม่ย่า) ได้ประดิษฐาน อยู่ในเทวาลัยแห่งนี้ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2496 เป็นต้นมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

Organic Agriculture Project Sukhothai Airport โครงการเกษตรอินทรีย์ สนามบินสุโขทัย along the sufficiency pathway

ACTIVITIES

With an aim to promote social benefit, certain area around Sukhothai Airport has been gradually converted into green area starting about ten years ago . Initially with rice farming experiment in small field without using any chemical we accumulated learning experiences little by little before venturing into larger and larger space until setting up the Organic Agriculture Project, Sukhothai Airport as we can see today.Up till now we fully realized that “Organic Agriculture” along the sufficiency pathway” is the answer to keep a smile on every living face. Thus, we are glad to have a part in the production of safe food for consumers and to have friendly relation with environment, as well as to provide supporting effort to broadening the expansion of organic agriculture system in Thailand. After the construction has finished and the airport has been in operation for a certain period the surrounding area still remains an open field and its potential utility has not yet been properly exploited. Since we felt obligated somewhat to carry out certain activities for social benefit we decided to make use of this arable land and turn it into an agricultural land friendly to producers, consumers and environment alike. In 1999 an experiment to grow rice without any chemical was carried out on a small scale of about 3 rais of unused land at one end of the airport. The positive result led to a gradual expansion of the experiment and gave us more confidence that we had chosen the right approach to a sustainable agriculture undertaking . Eventually 6 years later we launched our full scale “Organic Agriculture Project, Sukhothai Airport” cover more than 200 rais of the airport land ,to add more green color to the scenery through farming practices, which were friendly to nature concurrently with doing research studies and development of rice strains to ensure that our rice will be highly nutritious as well as suitable to the local natural environment. From growing chemical free rice alone within a small piece of land today about 400 rais of our organic agriculture land include paddy field, vegetable beds and fruit orchards ( mango, papaya, banana, mango plum). After turning commercial three years ago our

products were initially supplied to our airline catering service, and airports, but as our production volume increased we have broadened out our sale to the general consumers through our own outlets in Sukhothai and Bangkok as well as other available marketing channels. The outcome so far brought us confidence and an answer confirming that organic agriculture along the sufficiency pathway is feasible under the present day economic and social condition, especially on the rich soil ot Thailand. Chemical free rice farming has been an intended goal of Dr.Prasert and Mrs. Vanli Prasarttongosoth since the start of the project about ten years ago. Now it has grown into “Organic Agriculture Project, Sukhothai Airport ” and they still continue to provide full

supportwith Khun Sutthawadi Charoenrat serving as the Project Manager , Khun Somdej Immak as our technical advisor,while the operation is run by an efficient team work of more than 40 staff. Every one has his own important contribution in making this organic agriculture project a success today as well as in the future to come. Plant vegetable and learn how to take care of vegetable without using chemicals, Pick up fresh vegetables to take home Biking along the path within the project should be an enjoyable way to view the environment around this organic agriculture project as well as being the most nature friendly one. Starting from the welcome area, bike along the paved way for a short distance pass cattle pen on the opposite side then turn left on to an earthen track .The beginning scenery on both sides will be that of broad paddy field in green from young rice plants or golden green from plants with ears depending upon the timing of your visit to the project. After passing through the initial bumpy track you may stop to rest for a while at the field side lean to before proceeding on to vegetable garden and fruit orchard area. Here the atmosphere will change somewhat. On the left side the paddy field remains in the scenery while on the right will be banana orchard where rows and rows of banana trees can be seen, some may bear bunches of nice looking bananas. Continued biking for short while will bring you to another rest stop at vegetable garden.Time to get off the bike and walk around to see many vegetables. You will be impressed with lettuce, salad green and red, Chinese Kale leaves which appear with holes but still look nice naturally, butter head, green oak leaf, all sprouting new leaves, and excited with good size cucumber. While biking through fruit orchard you will see short papaya trees full with fruits. and many kinds of mangoes. In the middle of the orchard there is another lean to where you can rest a while from the heat before proceed ing further. Before turning back on to the paved road the road is even more bumpy than the initial part, so you have to be careful. The view on the right is a public waterway near Sukhothai Heritage Resort where villagers like to come and fish. You can stop here to watch or chat with the people who are always friendly and happy to relate their experience with tourists.

Biking pass Sukhothai Heritage Resort to the right turn will lead you to the area called “Lotus Pond and swan pool” with lotus pond on the left and swan pool on the right of the road. If you happen to arrive during the flowering period the big pond will be beautifully dotted with pink lotus. On the right hand pool white and black swans with baby swan will be gliding over the smooth surface of the water. Turning left at the end of the lotus pond will take you along the dirt road shaded with tall trees for a short distance before turning right pass paddy field and small pond to enter the “Rice Mill Community” where you will find a small size mill next to a working area for grading and packaging rice:, a group of project workers’ housings and a home stay living quarter, which can accommodate about 6-8 people. Plenty of birds can be observed around the project. With a pair of binoculars you can enjoy bird watching while stopping over at several lean toes along the biking round. The best time to do biking would be the early morning and late afternoon with shading light. The whole tour will take about 30-60 minutes depending upon your biking skill, and will surely be a healthy exercise for you. This demonstrative are is where you can observe the Thai rice farmers’ traditional way of life. Depending on the season, you may see the farmers in their distinctive indigo colored cotton uniforms ploughing the paddies with water buffalo, transplanting rice seedlings, harvesting, or milling rice.

ส�ำหรับเส้นทางเกษตรกรรมที่ยั่งยืน เราจึงได้ก้าวเข้าสู่ระบบเกษตรอินทรีย์อย่างเต็ม รูปแบบในปี 2549 ภายใต้ชื่อ “โครงการเกษตรอินทรีย์สนามบินสุโขทัย” บรรจงแต้ม สีเขียวบนผืนดินควบคู่กับการทุ่มเทศึกษาวิจัยและพัฒนาพันธุ์ข้าว เพื่อให้ได้ผลผลิต ข้าวที่มีคุณค่าทางโภชนาการสูงและเป็นสายพันธุ์ที่เหมาะสมกับสภาพตามธรรมชาติ ของพื้นที่โครงการฯ จากที่เคยปลูกข้าวเพียงอย่างเดียวในผืนนาขนาดเล็ก วันนี้พื้นที่ กว่า 400 ไร่หลากหลายไปด้วยนาข้าว แปลงผัก และสวนผลไม้ จากที่เคยผลิตได้เพียง แค่จำ� หน่ายให้ครัวสายการบินกรุงเทพและพนักงานบริษทั ในเครือ วันนีผ้ ลผลิตอินทรีย์ ออกดอกผลงอกงาม กระทั่งมีปริมาณมากพอส�ำหรับการจ�ำหน่ายแก่ผู้บริโภคทั่วไป ความส�ำเร็จก้าวแรกไม่เพียงน�ำมาซึง่ ความภูมใิ จ แต่ยงั ช่วยยืนยันว่า… วิถเี กษตรอินทรีย์ ทีด่ ำ� เนินควบคูไ่ ปกับหลักแห่งความพอเพียงนัน้ สามารถอยูร่ อดได้ในระบบเศรษฐกิจของ โลก ปัจจุบนั โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิง่ บนแผ่นดินอันอุดมสมบูรณ์ของประเทศไทย การท�ำนา โดยไม่พงึ่ พาสารเคมีเป็นเจตนารมณ์ของนายแพทย์ปราเสริฐและคุณวัลลีย์ ปราสาททอง โอสถ ที่ริเริ่มขึ้นตั้งแต่เมื่อประมาณสิบปีที่แล้ว กระทั่งเติบโตขึ้นเป็นโครงการเกษตร อินทรีย์สนามบินสุโขทัย บุคคลทั้งสองยังให้การสนับสนุนโครงการฯ ด้วยดีเสมอมา โดยมีคุณศุทธาวดี เจริญรัถ เป็นผู้จัดการโครงการฯ และอาจารย์สมเดช อิ่มมาก เป็น ที่ปรึกษาด้านการพัฒนาสายพันธุ์ ข้าว พร้อมด้วยทีมงานแข็งขันอีกมากกว่า 40 ชีวิต ทุกคนต่างมีส่วนส�ำคัญที่ท�ำให้ดินแดนเกษตรอินทรีย์แห่งนี้เดิน มาถึ ง ความส� ำ เร็ จ ก้ า วแรก และจะเดิ น หน้ า ร่ ว มกั น อย่ า งมั่ น คงสู ่ ก ้ า วต่ อ ๆ ไป ส�ำหรับผู้ที่ต้องการสัมผัสวิถีเกษตรอินทรีย์อย่างใกล้ชิด คุณสามารถเข้าร่วมกิจกรรม “ห้องเรียนกลางแจ้ง” เพื่อเรียนรู้และลงมือปฏิบัติงานส่วนต่างๆ ภายในโครงการฯ โดยมีเกษตรกรอินทรีย์ตัวจริงเป็นพี่เลี้ยงคอยให้ค�ำแนะน�ำ ถอนกล้า ด�ำนา ขี่ควาย ชมโรงสี... และอีกหลายกิจกรรมดีๆ ที่ทางโครงการเกษตรอินทรีย์ สนามบินสุโขทัย มีไว้ต้อนรับนัก ท่องเที่ยว ที่ต้องการเรียนรู้และสัมผัสกับวิถีชีวิตที่พอเพียง โครงการ เกษตรอินทรีย์ สนามบินสุโขทัย ตั้งอยู่บริเวณเดียวกับสนามบินสุโขทัย เมื่อเดินทางมา ถึงสิ่งแรกคือการเปลี่ยนชุด เป็นชาวนาเต็มขั้น โดยให้ใส่เสื้อกางเกงแบบม่อฮ่อม เมื่อ เตรียมตัวเสร็จก็จะขึ้นรถอีแต๋น หรือรถสามล้อแล้วแต่จ�ำนวนคนที่ท�ำ กิจกรรม จาก นั้นจะพาไปยังเล้าเป็ดเป็นที่แรก เพื่อเก็บไข่เป็ดกันแบบสดๆ ต่อด้วยไปชมฝูงควาย

Roam on pedestrian street, enjoy delicious food and retrace Thai way of life of Sukhothai will help promote Sukhothai tourism and distribute revenue to local communities. Pedestrian street of Sukhothai Province will be organized on every Saturday across from Wat Ratchathani, where is a road beside the playground. In the fair atmosphere, there will be many shops of handicraft products, OTOP products and food products as well as handwork demonstration which indicates identity of Sukhothai Province. Particularly, the highlight of the pedestrian street is at dance stage where everyone who wants to make retro-dance can come to participate. In addition, there are performances of music and traditional dance which create colorful and atmospheric World Heritage Town in the fair. Therefore, it would like to have a lot of people to walk here because besides they can enjoy and have products back to their houses; revenue will be distributed to communities in Sukhothai Province. The market is conducted on every Saturday at 6.00-10.00 pm.

สาธรพิพิธภัณฑ์ผ้าทองค�ำ

Sathorn Gold Textile Museum, Baan Hat Siao, has fully displayed the historic story of vintage pattern weaved textile of Thai Phuan People, Baan Had Siew. Its owner is Khun Sathorn Soratprasopanti. Inside the museum, history of vintage pattern weaved textile is fully displayed whether Pha Jok with ninestrip pattern of Baan Hat Siao, fabrics used in ordination ceremony with elephant procession, fabrics used in wedding ceremony. These are identity handmade textiles of Thai Phuan, Baan Hat Siao, that have been consecutively inherited for hundreds of years. Inside the room displaying ancient fabrics, there is history of custom, tradition and lifestyle of Thai Phuan, Baan Hat Siao,. Khun Sathorn has had sought to purchase all kinds of indigenous clothes and ancient fabrics until he found 1 piece of Gold Pha Sin from Chiang Tung Royal Court with the price up to THB 150,000. Khun Sathorn bought it without any hesitation in order to conserve it and for the fortune of the museum. This fabric also inspired him to purchase another piece of weaved fabric, with a price of THB 380,000. It is 90% gold with the gold weight of 82 baht, for his daughter as a prominent of the museum. It appeared that the result was better than expectation, the ordinary Sathorn shop became a learning source of national leading education institutions and interesting general public as well as foreigners who come to admire and study at the shop daily. Eventually, the shop was turned into “Sathorn Gold Textile Museum”. Besides the Textile Museum, there is a Ancient Building Museum where displays belongings and lifestyle of people in the former times and also demonstrates the process of weaving Pha Sin Teen Jok in order to allow audiences to learn and study about the difficulty of such weaving. In addition to the displayed vintage fabrics, there is a souvenir shop selling various patterns of fabric which are a symbol of Baan Hat Siao, including ancient gold and silverware made by hand in beautifully ancient Sukhothai style. If one is interested in fabrics, one should visit and take a look at Gold Textile Museum, Hat Siao Sub-district, Si Satchanalai District, Sukhothai Province. It is opened with free admission in order to show the ancestor’s knowledge for admiring and studying of Thai Phuan descendants, outsiders and foreigners.

Mai Klang Krung Mai Klang Krung Restaurant has been already opened over 16 years. Its atmosphere is plentiful of variety of tree cover which makes the place looking cool and feeling pleasant. Inside the restaurant is also decorated with ancient things and appliances such as old lamps, chinaware or pottery with strange shape. Ban Kru Eiw is an indigenous food restaurant of Sukhothai Province. Initially, Kru Aiw (Teacher Aiw) intended to open small restaurant of about 5 tables. Upon increasing number of customers, the restaurant was expanded. Presently, there are 2 air-conditioned rooms which were modified from the whole house. Seats of external area have shady, cozy and intimate atmosphere which are good for sitting to have meal. The restaurant has paid much attention on cleanness and freshness of vegetable and customers’ health. There are various kinds of food for services with a prominent on unique taste of Kru Aiw style such as Sukhothai Rice Noodle which still remains the Traditional Sukhothai Rice Noodle using cow-pea as a primary ingredient, Phadthai (Stir-fried Thai Noodle), Khanom Buoeng, etc. For people who like eating vegetable, the recommended menu is Naim Nueng. one should come to S&N Coffee house which is located in Sukhothai town. S&N is abbreviated from Sun and Night which is ready to be opened to welcome customers from 9 am to 8 pm daily. The owner had an idea to run a coffee shop after graduation, therefore, he tried to open this shop. At the beginning, there were services of coffee and bakery only. Due to the shop is located near many offices, customers requested to have food too. Therefore, the owner decided to sell food as well in order to have more customers. Presently, the shop has been opened for 3 years. Decoration of this shop does not much emphasize on anything, but color is used for attracting customers who take its services. It also shows the owner’s collections which were bought during the owner visiting many places. In addition, there is a book corner with tourism journals and novels inside the shop where customers can take book(s) to read. If one would like to work along with coffee sipping, the shop also provides Wi-Fi service. Regarding the coffee, the shop has chosen good coffee for the service. Khanom Phing Mae Tim sold by ajar door ขนมผิงแม่ติ๋ม

Speaking about Khanom Phing of Kong Krailat District, Sukhothai Province, it must be thought of “Khanom Phing Mae Tim sold by ajar door”. Her Khanom Phing was transferred over 40 years ago. With its identity, it is the only shop using ancient charcoal oven to bake such dessert which needs skill and observation. If the dessert is not kept washing well, its color is not beautiful or if it is over heated, it may be burnt. With her style of baking, Khanom Phing Mae Tim is coconut milk scent and sweet, creamy, crispy and delicious taste. It is believed that one, who has a chance to try it, must eat it more than one piece. Such dessert comprises not so many ingredients, they are only tapioca flour, duck eggs, sugar and coconut milk. Delicious Khanom Phing must have duck eggs as an ingredient because its taste will be better than that one using chicken eggs. Mae Tim shop will bake freshly new dessert everyday by starting from 11 pm until around 7 am in the next morning. Before getting ready to eat Khanom Phing, the blended flour must be fermented for 1 night to make it being naturally bulged. Then, the appropriately bulged flour will be knead in a shape of long line before cutting into small chunks and laying on tray smeared with cooking oil. Baking time is 10 minutes per tray. Baking method is to burn charcoal until reaching the certain temperature, then place such burnt charcoal around the oven on its top and bottom. After that, tray will be inserted into the oven and it must be observed by using experience to periodically take it out from the oven. We call this step as baking. The tray will be taken off the oven for cracking the dessert off it upon the appropriately baked. Then,

the dessert will be left for cooling before packing for selling. One who wants to buy Khanom Phing Mae Tim sold by ajar door is recommended to buy it in early morning because all dessert will be sold out by late morning. In order to not waste the time, it is recommended to make reservation via telephone. เมือพูดถึงขนมผิงของอ�ำเภอกงไกรลาศ จังหวัดสุโขทัยก็ต้อง นึกถึง “ขนมผิงแม่ติ๋ม แง้มประตูขาย” ขนมผิงร้านแม่ติ๋มนั้นได้รับการ ถ่ายทอดมามากกว่า 40 ปีแล้ว ด้วยความที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ เป็นร้านเดียวที่ ยังคงใช้วิธีอบขนมผิงด้วยเตาถ่านแบบโบราณ คือใช้เตาถ่านอบขนม ซึ่งต้อง ใช้ความช�ำนาญ และต้องเป็นคนช่างสังเกต และหากดูขนมไม่ดีจะท�ำให้ขนม ผิงสีไม่สวย หรือไฟแรงเกินไปอาจไหม้ได้ เลยท�ำให้ขนมผิง แม่ติ๋ม มีกลิ่นหอม ของกะทิ และมีรสชาติ หวาม มัน กรอบ อร่อย เชื่อได้ว่าใครที่ลองชิมก็ไม่ สามารถหยุดแค่ชิ้นเดียวแน่ๆ ขั้นตอนการท�ำก็มีส่วนผสมก็ไม่เยอะ แป้งมัน ไข่เป็ด น�้ำตาล และกะทิ การที่จะท�ำขนมผิงให้อร่อยก็ต้องใช่ไข่เป็ด เพราะ จะท�ำให้ขนมผิงมีรสชาติที่ดีกว่าการใช้ไข่ไก่ ที่ร้านแม่ติ๋มจะท�ำขนมใหม่ทุก วันและจะเริ่มท�ำตั้งแต่ 5 ทุ่มจนถึง ประมาณ 7 โมงเช้าของวันรุ่งขึ้น กว่า จะมาเป็นขนมผิงให้ได้รับประทานนั้น ต้องหมักแป้งทิ้งไว 1 คืนเพื่อให้แป้ง ฟูเองโดยธรรมชาติ พอแป้งฟูได้ที่ ก็น�ำมาปั้นเป็นเส้นยาวๆ และตัดเป็นก้อน เล็กๆ วางลงบนถาดที่ทาน�้ำมัน ขั้นตอนในการอบจะใช้เวลาประมาณ 10 นาทีต่อ 1 ถาด วิธีการอบคือต้องเผาถ่านให้ร้อนได้ที่แล้ว จึงต้องน�ำถ่าน มาวางด้านบนของเตา และด้านล่างซึ่งจะวางไว้บริเวณรอบๆด้านข้างของ เตา และน�ำถาดสอดเข้าเตา และต้องน�ำถาดขนมออกมาดูตลอดโดยการ คาดคะเนจากประสบการณ์ เราเรียกขั้นตอนนี้ว่าการผิง เมื่อขนมได้ทีแล้ว ก็จะน�ำมากะเทาะให้ขนมหลุดออกจากถาด ทิ้งไว้ให้เย็น และใส่ถุงจ�ำหน่าย ใครที่ต้องการจะซื้อขนมผิงแม่ติ๋ม แง้มประตู่ขาย แนะน�ำว่าต้องไปซื้อแต่เช้า เพราะช่วงสายขนมก็จะหมด หรือโทรสั่งจองไว้เพื่อไม่ให้เป็นการเสียเวลา ISSUE 9

Mae Kularb แม่กุหลาบ

Mae Kularb Shop was opened over 50 years ago. Presently, its owner is the 2nd generation. The name of Mae Kularb came from the mother’s name of the shop owner. Famous desserts of Mae Kularb are Thong Muan, Thong Phub, and Khanom Phing. Mae Kularb’s desserts will be cooked daily because they are sent to sell in many places. Therefore, they are needed to be cooked everyday in order to serve the customers’ demand. Ingredients of Thong Muan or Thong Phub are mainly comprised wheat flour, sugar, duck eggs, scraped coconut and sesame. Ingredients of Khanom Phing are mainly comprised tapioca flour, sugar, duck eggs and coconut milk cream. After Khanom Phing is completely baked by gas oven, it will be fumigated with Thai style aroma candle smoke. Mae Kularb Shop can produce many hundred kilograms of desserts daily. Su Khon Tha Khanom Gliew สุคนธา ขนมเกลียวสุโขทัย Sukhontha Khanom Gliew Sukhothai was opened in 1990. Now, it is over 20 years old. The shop was named after its owner; that is “Sukhontha”. Khanom Gliew (spiral snack) of Sukhontha comprises many forms for selecting as souvenir. Khanom Gliew Sukhontha is different from others because its size is not too small and too big and it has spring onion as an ingredient. Khanom Gliew Sukhontha is also sent to other places for reselling. Khanom Gliew Sukhontha is hand made in every step without any machine. The shop used to think to produce such snack by machine. However, no any machine is able to substitute hand production because the twisting step for making spiral may make the snack tearing apart. Khanom Gliew is another famous kind of chewing snack souvenir of Sukhothai Province. It is made of wheat flour mixed with eggs and flavored with pepper and salt then blended, then kneaded in spiral shape and fried until brown. After that, the fried snack is slightly stirred with bae-sae, which is a combination of water and sugar. The Khanom Gliew tastes sweet with spring onion aroma. Sukhontha Khanom Gliew is good for souvenir.

สุคนธา ขนมเกลียวสุโขทัย เปิดมาเมือปี 2533 ตอนนี้ก็ 20 กว่าปี เจ้าของได้ตั้งชื่อร้านตามชื่อเจ้าของร้านนั้นก็คือ “สุคนธา” ขนมเกลียวของ สุคนธา มีหลากหลายรูปแบบให้ได้เลือกน�ำไปเป็นของ ฝากกัน ขนมเกลียวสุคนธา จะต่างกับที่อื่นด้วยขนาดที่ไม่เล็กและใหญ่ จนเกินไป และก็ใส่ต้มหอมลองไป นอกจากจะท�ำขนมเกลียวเองแล้ว ยังส่งไปให้ร้านอื่นได้น�ำไปขายต่อในรูปแบบอื่นอีกด้วย ส่วนขั้นตอน ในการท�ำขนมเกลียวนั้นทุกขั้นตอนจะใช้มือในการท�ำ ไม่มีเครื่องจักร มาช่วยเลย ทางร้านเคยคิดที่จะน�ำเครื่องจักรเข้ามาใช่ในการผลิต แต่ ก็ไม่เครื่องจักรไหนที่จะสามารถมาแทนการท�ำขนมเกลียวด้วยมือ ได้ เพราะถ้าใช้เครื่องจักรในขั้นตอนการบิดขนมให้เป็นเกลียวนั้นอาจ ท�ำให้ขนมขาดได้ ขนมเกลียวเป็นของฝากประเภทขบเคี้ยวที่ขึ้นชื่ออีก ชนิดหนึ่งของจังหวัดสุโขทัย ท�ำจากแป้งหมี่ผสมไข่ ปรุงรส ด้วยพริก ไทย เกลือ เคล้าให้เข้ากันก่อนจะน�ำมาปั้นเป็นเกลียว แล้วน�ำไปทอด ให้ออกสีน�้ำตาล จากนั้นก็น�ำไปคลุกแบะแซจะมีส่วนผสมของน�้ำกับ น�้ำตาล รสชาติของขนมเกลียวจะมีรสหวานและมีความหอมของต้ม หอม สุคนธา ขนมเกลียวสุโขทัยเป็นขนมที่เหมาะแก่การเป็นของฝาก
