Executive update
Welcome to the August 2023 edition of Groundswell, where we bring you the latest news and updates from Victoria's horticulture industry. In our last edition for winter, we celebrate the success of some of our industry partners, meet some new members, get the lowdown on our Industry Awards, and much, much more.
It has been an eventful few months for NGIV as we have been actively engaged in various advocacy efforts to promote and support our industry. We have held meetings with numerous state Members of Parliament, attended government-related events, and are currently preparing for the highly anticipated Annual Horticulture Showcase at Parliament House.
Horticulture Leader of the Year, Horticulture Student of the Year and Commitment to Environmental Stewardship awards, while recognising some distinguished and long-standing industry greats. It was a fantastic event with an impressive turn out; read about it and see the photos on page 14.

Taking place in the last week of August, the Showcase is an important event for our industry and serves as a continuation of our successful advocacy work. This year, our focus will be on education and careers in horticulture. We are excited to welcome special guests, including gardening celebrities, business owners, partners, directors, as well as education staff and students, who will join us in promoting and championing our industry’s strengths.
At NGIV, we are commited to advancing the interests of our members and the Victorian horticulture industry. Through events like the Showcase, we continue to advocate on behalf of our members, foster strong relationships with key stakeholders, and drive meaningful initiatives that support the growth and prosperity of our sector.

In addition to Awards Night, there have been several other successful industry events held recently. Notably, our Tree and Shrub Growers of Victoria and NextGen events at Plant Access were held in June. You can read more about them on Page 13. And looking ahead, NGIV is gearing up for the upcoming Australian Horticultural Trials Week 2023, scheduled to take place from 5 to 8 December. We take great pride in collaborating with esteemed breeders, growers, and allied businesses across Australia for this esteemed horticultural event. Trials Week presents a unique opportunity to explore and experience an array of exciting new plant varieties, while visiting some of Australia’s finest propagators, growers, and allied businesses. It also serves as a platform for networking with industry professionals from both Australia and abroad.

recognition of the value this project brings to our industry. The Horticultural Centre of Excellence will play an important role in supporting the growth and development of our sector. Since the last edition of Groundswell, the Partners in Wellbeing program has come to an end and NGIV have said farewell to our dedicated mental health clinician/consultant, Gerard Tan.
Beginning in October 2022, the Partners in Wellbeing initiative has been supporting the mental health and wellbeing needs of NGIV members. The program’s initial focus was on aiding businesses and their staff during the reopening of Victoria after prolonged periods of lockdown; however, the program has consistently adapted to the industry’s ongoing needs ever since. Through the Partners in Wellbeing program, Gerard has been actively contributing to the NGIV e-newsletter, offering weekly insights on mental health and wellbeing advice, and has made regular contributions to Groundswell
We would like to take a moment to express our heartfelt thanks to Gerard for his dedicated service. His contributions in the area of mental health and wellbeing have made a lasting impact on our industry, and while there are still many opportunities for growth in this area, Gerard’s insights have undoubtedly put our industry in a better position. We wish Gerard all the very best on the exciting road ahead.

Van Berkel Distributors: A family legacy in the horticulture industry

In the ever-evolving world of horticulture, Van Berkel Distributors stands as a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and family values. Founded in the 1950s, the company has grown from a small mail order business to an industry-leading distributor of bulbs, plants, and perennials, with Trenton Cottage serving as their wholesale division and Garden Express their thriving retail arm. As the company celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, we met with Jos, David and Chloe Van Berkel to delve into its rich history, evolution, and the key factors that have contributed to its success.
Van Berkel Distributors has a rich history rooted in the migration of the family from Holland in the early 1950s. Starting as a small mail order business, the company gradually expanded and evolved, and over time, the baton was passed from one generation to the next.
“I got involved when I was about 15, 16,” says Jos, whose father, Henk, established the business with his brother. “And when I was about 35, my father passed. I was left holding the baby, but I had David [Jos’s son and long-time Managing
Director] coming on. So gradually it went from one succession to the next. I would have run the business for a good 15, 20 years, but involved in the business for 40 odd years. And then David took over and told me to get out,” he laughs.
“I finished high school with some really good grades,” says David. “I went to join the bank and they gave me an international finance gig. I did the trip to the city a few times and thought, ‘No I’m a country boy and I want to want to run the business.’”

“I just loved the operational activities of the business, going through a process of receiving and packaging and then invoicing out and being a part of all of that. It probably wasn’t until later in life that I realised how much I learned about growing. Then we took over Bulb Express in the 2000s and I started to do some talks with people, and my growing experience just came out so naturally.”
Having held the position of Managing Director for the last few decades, David has now taken a step back. He now serves as a mentor of sorts to his daughter, Chloe, who continues to thrive in her role as General Manager.
“It’s an amazing achievement to be moving into fourth generation,” says Chloe. “The fact that we’ve stayed around through all this time, and we've adapted and stayed current in a niche part of the market – bulbs and perennials – not many companies achieve that. To be able to follow in your family’s footsteps and take pride in that and carry that name through time – it’s a great feeling.”
“It’s really interesting to think back at my transition with my dad,” says David. “I’d be pestering him to let me run the books and start accounts and get new business and grow the business. I was pushing him to let me do more and now to have Chloe doing the same thing, asking to look after the staff, to bring in new business. There are so many similarities there.”
Remarkably, Van Berkel Distributors still occupies the original site in Monbulk, which Jos and David visit often. The humble beginnings in a small shed and a house at the back of the property have transformed into a thriving business with dedicated offices and modern packing facilities. Notably, David’s brother, Greg, runs a growing operation just next door, which was also started by Jos, and is a major supplier to Van Berkel’s Distributors, specialising in Dahlias, Bearded Iris, Peonies, and other perennial stock. Van Berkel Distributors has continued to grow since the early days, when the business primarily focused on mail order and wholesale operations, supplying bulbs to Coles.
Jos remembers how through the 60s and 70s, Van Berkel Distributors refined its processes and ventured into new avenues. The company expanded its wholesale line, eventually discontinuing the mail order business in the 1970s to concentrate solely on supplying Coles and Kmart stores.

However, Van Berkel’s acquisition of local business Bulb Express marked a turning point, reigniting the mail order retail sector under the new name, Garden Express, and paving the way for the online platform it is today. Finding themselves on the verge of this new venture, Jos says they “grabbed the tiger by tail”
Garden Express has today served over one million customers across Australia, while Van Berkel Distributors remain one of Kmart’s longest serving suppliers, having worked with them for over 50 years.
In addition to the Van Berkel family members who play key roles within the company – Chloe and her parents, Jenni and David, and her aunt and uncle, along with Chloe’s great-aunt Maryanne, who still has an active role in the accounts department – Van Berkel Distributors values its dedicated team. The business has fostered a family-like environment, currently employing 65 permanent staff members, with their workforce growing to around 80 during peak seasons.
“We have four people who have worked with us for over 20 years,” says Chloe. “That’s another great achievement for us. Most of the people here have been here over five years. A lot of our employees have watched us kids grow up and my own son grow up. So, it’s a real family feel here.”
“You can’t have a good business without a good team and it’s something that you’ve got to work to establish,” says David. “It’s something that Chloe’s very good at too. We all really appreciate everybody that's been a part of this company.”
The business continues to excel in the digital space and over the past seven years, Rowan, marketing manager and Chloe’s Uncle, has been at the forefront of driving Garden Express through innovative marketing and a robust online presence. Recognising the evolving marketing landscape, Rowan and his team have shifted from the catalogues of the past to a digital-first approach, leveraging social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, as well as e-newsletters, to reach their audience.

“I think our active customer base is around 250,000 people,” says Rowan. “We send emails out to about 120,000 of those three times a week, and we’re able to sell things almost instantly. It’s quite crazy, especially if it’s something a little bit new or something that they might not be able to get from a local garden centre or a larger retailer. As an example, a blue kangaroo paw that came out recently – we were able to get some stock and within an hour we’d sold 500 of them.”
The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges to businesses worldwide. However, Van Berkel Distributors had a distinct advantage due to their extensive experience in online sales and mail order operations. As the demand for gardening products skyrocketed during lockdowns, the company found itself well-prepared to meet the surge in orders.
“We were 100% ready for it,” says Rowan. “We’ve done it for more than 15 years prior to COVID and mail order before that, which is basically the same thing. There were some challenges, but we came out the other side, and we've been able to retain the COVID audience.”
The nursery division is another important aspect of the business
With 65-acres of land in Healesville and the nursery in Monbulk spanning 10 acres, the company specialises in the propagation and cultivation of various plant species. Noteworthy is the Wollemi pine, a rare and ancient Australian native tree, which was believed to be extinct until a small population was discovered in the Blue Mountains. Van Berkel Distributors was the first associate company to distribute the pines 25 years ago, and almost 20 years ago, they became the pine’s sole propagator and distributor.
They are also one of the largest growers and suppliers of Hostas, Hippeastrum Amaryllis bulbs, and Peony roses.
Furthermore, their dedication to preserving old-world favourites is evident in the specialty lines they offer, catering to customers seeking unique and rare plant varieties.
While Van Berkel Distributors has embraced online retail, they recognise the importance of maintaining personal connections with their customers. A key opportunity for this is found at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS). For over 20 years, Garden Express has been an active participant in MIFGS, using it as a chance to engage directly with customers and help them put names to faces. At this year’s MIFGS, they showcased their long history with an array of black and white photos documenting their journey of the last 70 years.
Not wanting to let the milestone go unnoticed, as they mark their 70th year in the industry, they recently held a grand celebration – a Christmas in July European-themed birthday party. This event brought together employees, retired staff members, and family to commemorate the significant achievement of 70 years in business.
“We don’t underestimate how great it is that a business has survived this long and through so many challenges,” says David And recognising the importance of collaboration and networking, Van Berkel Distributors recently partnered with the NGIV. By joining the NGIV as an industry partner, Van Berkel Distributors hopes to foster relationships, gain wider industry recognition, and contribute their expertise to the wider horticulture community.
“We’ve been here for 70 years, and we want to be part of that network,” says Chloe. “We’ve got a lot of expertise to share and a lot to contribute.”

Originally established as Debco, a producer and marketer of organic manures, AGS gained recognition in the early 1980s for their development of a superior potting mix that surpassed others available in the market. manufacturing processes. The introduction of bespoke equipment, designed by KD engineers and built in partnership with them, revolutionises the way AGS blends its products. Unlike their traditional batch blending method, which allowed for blending of two metres at a time, the continuous blending line operates constantly, ensuring a consistent flow of perfectly blended materials.
“We’ve gone from batch blending, which is two cubic metre batches at a time, which was probably really the most automated potting mix facility in the country as it was, to a continuous blending line where it’s all automated,” explains Commercial Business Manager Adrian McCarthy. “All fertiliser goes in automatically. All the media goes in automatically, gets blended up and gets delivered straight into a truck.”
The continuous blending line represents a substantial investment and serves as the centrepiece of AGS’s improved production infrastructure. With this technology, AGS achieves a remarkable increase in efficiency, productivity, and output – the transition from batch blending to continuous blending enables them to produce mixes nearly four times faster than before.
This transformative technology not only accelerates AGS’s production capacity but also enhances the quality and consistency of their products. By continually blending the materials, the line ensures an optimal mixture, resulting in

superior product performance. The precise control and accuracy of the continuous blending line allow AGS to maintain the highest standards in every batch of mix produced, offering customers a reliable and uniform product.
AGS has developed proprietary software to manage the entire mixing process, ensuring consistency and accuracy. Moreover, they have integrated online pH, moisture, and other metrics monitoring, as well as automatic sampling, enhancing the control and quality assurance of their products.
The impact of these technological upgrades extends beyond productivity gains. AGS’s continuous blending line represents a shift in mindset, embracing a more efficient and streamlined approach to manufacturing. With its ability to continually blend the right materials and quickly adapt to varying demands, AGS is better equipped to meet the industry's evolving needs.
“Nurseries are adapting, and we’re adapting,” says Adrian. These improvements have been funded in part by a federal government grant, its successful attainment a joint effort between AGS and consulting company Blue Rock. The grant is aimed to promote self-reliance and reduce dependence on imported products. AGS seized the opportunity to further improve their capabilities and address industry trends.
A changing of the guard
As they celebrate over 50 years of operation, AGS has recently undergone important transitions in its leadership and management structure, positioning itself for continued innovation and market growth.
One notable change is the upcoming retirement of Peter Jaeschke, AGS’s CEO. With his retirement at the end of the year, Adrian McCarthy will assume the role of CEO. Adrian’s experience and understanding of the industry, coupled with his commitment to AGS’s vision, makes him well-suited to lead the company into the future.
With Adrian’s transition to CEO, Steven Bath will step into the Commercial Business Manager position. Steven’s managerial experience makes him a valuable addition to AGS’s leadership team. With his keen understanding of the market, Stephen is well-positioned to drive AGS’s commercial success and foster strategic partnerships.
AGS’s journey is an example of innovation, adaptability, and continuous improvement. As they reflect on their 50 years in the industry, they remain focused on their mission to deliver highquality growing media solutions while continuing to embrace cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices.

In June, Plant Access hosted the Tree and Shrub Growers of Victoria and NextGen groups for an engaging and informative event in at their site in Heatherton. The event brought people of all ages together to explore Plant Access’ facilities, gain insights into their business and the broader freight industry, all while networking with like-minded members.
The first NextGen event of the year kicked off with an insightful tour, providing attendees with a first-hand glimpse into Plant Access’s operations. The group learned the ins and outs of safe, effective, and efficient plant transport carried out by Plant Access. Attendees were even treated to a sneak peek inside a state-of-the-art truck complete with living quarters including a cosy bed and a microwave for maximum driver comfort!
The tour not only allowed participants to explore the premises but also offered opportunities to engage with the Plant Access crew, including Cameron Koczak, the Operations Manager, and James Sherwin, the Head of Sales.
Soon after the NextGen event wrapped up, TSG members arrived for their very own tour, also led by Cameron.
The evening continued at Stomping Ground for dinner, drinks and networking. Guests were treated to a Q&A session with James Sherwin who provided insightful answers regarding the state of freight in the industry. Following the Q&A, NGIV CEO Craig Taberner took the floor, sharing updates and key announcements from the association. Attendees were encouraged to participate in industry events, fostering community engagement and professional growth.
A special thanks to Will McIntosh from Mansfield’s Propagation Nursery for his excellent hosting skills, asking the hard-hitting questions and to all those who attended. It was an engaging and promising start to the NextGen community’s year and an enjoyable, informative evening for the Tree and Shrub Growers of Victoria.

of Recognition at Nursery and Garden Industry Victoria's Annual Horticultural Industry Awards Night
The atmosphere was charged with excitement as NGIV hosted its highly anticipated Annual Horticultural Industry Awards Night. Held at the prestigious Zinc at Federation Square in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the event brought the industry together to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of individuals and businesses.
Guests were welcomed with drinks on arrival, setting the tone for an evening of celebration. Gideon Cox, MC for the evening, took the stage to extend a warm welcome to all attendees, both new and familiar faces. The event provided an opportunity to recognise and appreciate esteemed guests, including Glenn Fenton, President of Greenlife Industry Australia, and Megan Flower, CEO of Landscaping Victoria. A tribute was also paid to life members John van der Horst, Peter Wilkins, and Paul Boland, as well as honorary members Marcus Gale (IMG) and Leigh Siebler for their invaluable contributions to the industry.
The heart of the evening was dedicated to recognising and honouring exemplary individuals and businesses that have set new standards in the horticultural industry. The room buzzed with excitement as the first award, the Horticulture Student of the Year, was presented. Jacob Chizik from Speciality Trees and Swinburne University was named the deserving winner, with the award presented by Suzie Shearer, founder of award sponsor Coolabah Turf.
Next, the Young Horticulture Leader of the Year Award showcased the industry’s bright and promising future. Olumuyiwa Akintola Elliott from Garden City Plastics impressed the judging panel with his adaptability, professionalism, and dedication to sustainability throughout his career.
Environmental stewardship took centre stage as the Commitment to Environmental Stewardship Award was presented to Speciality Trees. The company’s dedication
to innovation, technology, and environmental education continues to set an inspiring example for the industry.
The final prestigious honour of the night, the NGIV President’s Distinguished Service Award, was given to Roger Boyle. Roger’s almost five decades of exceptional service, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the horticultural industry have made him a continual inspiration and a worthy recipient of this award.
The Awards Night not only celebrated achievements but also provided an opportunity for industry professionals to connect and network. The photobooth, sponsored by Cohort Nursery, and interactive bingo game added an element of fun and camaraderie to the event, encouraging guests to mingle and laugh together.
As the night drew to a close, NGIV CEO Craig Taberner expressed his gratitude to all attendees, partners, and volunteers who contributed to the success of the event. The Awards Night not only celebrated excellence but also served as a reminder of the strong sense of community and shared passion that underpins the horticultural industry. It was a fantastic celebration of the industry’s achievements and a testament to the dedication and commitment of its members.

Floating Solar: A renewable energy option for a sustainable future

As prominent players in Victoria’s horticultural sector and Renewable Energy sectors respectively, Nursery & Garden Industry Victoria (NGIV) and Greenwood Solutions are at the forefront of exploring innovative and sustainable practices.
One such initiative is the use of floating solar panels, or “floatovoltaics”
Currently, one of these 350kW+ floating arrays is in use at a Victorian wastewater treatment plant, addressing the considerable electrical loads the site experiences. The array was designed and installed by Greenwood Solutions, an in-house renewables company based in Abbotsford, Victoria.
The system, consisting of over 780 Canadian solar panels tethered to concrete blocks surrounding the Array, is attracting a lot of attention not only from interested renewable enthusiasts, but also the abundant bird life attracted to these sites.
West Gippsland’s Lardner Park is another site which has adopted an innovative approach. Greenwood have designed a 50kW floating solar panel system that will sit very nicely on a body of water situated in this beautiful part of Victoria.
This will be another exciting demonstration of the potential of floatovoltaics, a concept that promises to revolutionise the way we harness solar energy on farms, or in businesses that have access to a dam or lake.
Why floating solar panels? The reasons are numerous:
» They allow for the utilisation of bodies of water, a resource often overlooked in energy production.
» They create an opportunity for businesses to maximise profitability without sacrificing precious land that could be better used.
» Floating solar panels provide evaporative benefits, lessening the amount of sunlight hitting the water, and thus reducing evaporation.
» The natural cooling effect of the water results in a more efficient solar system as it helps to manage the temperature of the panels, thereby increasing their efficiency.
Many businesses who are involved in turf and greenlife production, as well as retail nurseries, could potentially benefit from adopting such renewable energy solutions.
Additionally, businesses involved in horticulture-allied trades, educational institutions, and other not-for-profit organisations, including governmentaligned green enterprises, could further the reach and impact of this technology through their respective networks and platforms.
One of the challenges currently facing the adoption of floating solar technology is the cost. The initial cost of floating solar panels can be higher than conventional rooftop systems. However, the potential benefits and long-term savings could offset these upfront costs. For small dams, the entire water body could be covered with panels, held in place by tethers on the bank, eliminating the need to enter the water. This is a particularly ideal solution for wastewater treatment lagoons, which often lack the land or roof space for traditional solar installations. The journey towards the widespread adoption of renewable energy technologies like floating solar is not without challenges. But we believe that as more farms and agricultural enterprises see the benefits of these systems – both economic and environmental – adoption will increase, leading to a greener and more sustainable horticulture sector.

A fond farewell to Humphris’ Andrew White

Between the ages of 15 and 20, Andrew worked on farms during school holidays, operating as a wool presser and taking on night plough work. He finished high school in 1977 and attended university.
After completing his studies in 1981, Andrew pursued his interest in gardening by starting his own garden maintenance business in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. To boost business when he was short on money, Andrew cheekily sprayed sulphate ammonia on his customers’ grass, resulting in accelerated growth and more work. He successfully operated this business for two years.
In 1983, Andrew took on a job opportunity through a friend, conducting a research project. The aim of the project was to explore methods for preserving Australian native plants inside shipping containers for eight weeks. Over the course of 12 months, Andrew conducted various trials, simulating different conditions, and employing chemical treatments and coverings. With a team of six staff members, this project proved to be a valuable experience for Andrew, allowing him to buy and outsource plants.
In 1984, he embarked on his career as a plant breeder in Sydney, marking the beginning of his journey in the industry. During this time, he established a tissue culture lab, transforming a men’s locker room. That company was Woodlands, now Oasis, where Andrew remained a valued employee for 32 years.
Following the tissue culture experience, Andrew transitioned into plant breeding for a period of 3–4 years, focusing on cultivating various plants, including poinsettias. Throughout this period, he collaborated with the University of California to explore the techniques for successfully growing Australian native plants in the Californian environment.
In late 80s, the recession hit, resulting in a halt on research and development. Andrew took on a new role as the manager of a propagation team of 15 employees. Under his management, the team successfully handled the propagation of four million cuttings a year. Additionally, Andrew provided technical support to growers throughout Australia.
In 1998, he commenced work in the seedling area within Oasis. Two years later, Andrew and Michelle (Andrew’s big boss) were approached to relocate to Melbourne, a decision that entailed uprooting their lives along with their four young children and pets. Accepting the challenge, Andrew stepped into the role of Oasis site manager in Cranbourne. Initially slated as a two-year commitment overseeing a team of 150 staff members, the position proved was extended to a seven-year term.
In 2015, Andrew was appointed Oasis general manager, overseeing 300 staff across two sites in Cranbourne and Springwood (Blue Mountains). Managing such a widespread operation necessitated frequent travel between the sites. Andrew would spend 2–3 nights every fortnight away from home, which not only allowed him to efficiently oversee operations but also presented an opportunity to travel the world.
As a side note, from 1992 to 2015, Andrew served as a director for Bonza, a plant breeding company with Japanese connections. Despite the duration of his involvement, Andrew did not learn much Japanese unfortunately. Furthermore, Andrew had a four-year term on the NGIV board.
On March 15, 2016, Andrew joined Humphris Nursery as the general manager, embarking on a role that has required him to wear many hats.
Throughout his time at the nursery, Andrew has managed staff, overseeing the team’s growth from 60 to 120 employees. He also contributed through grant writing, staff recruitment (some of which have had us asking ourselves, “what was he thinking?”), and assumed the role of grafting manager. Additionally, Andrew served as a valuable sounding board for Kerstie and, most difficult of all, he faced the difficult task of trying to control Baz.
Andrew is a man of loyalty and honesty. He has a fantastic work ethic and he is stoic. He is humble about his contribution to Humphris Nursery and the industry at large. He is a true professional who has shown by example that hard work is something to aim for daily. Andrew will walk away from the industry with many friendships, a well-respected and kind man, whose presence knowledge will be missed.
We love all that he has done for us and now he must go and do all that he loves for himself. All at Humphris are going to miss Andrew in our own individual way.

An integrated approach to creating mentally healthy workplaces

Businesses are propelled by people – the individuals who make crucial decisions, produce, and deliver essential products and services, and engage with customers and the public. To unlock their full potential, people need healthy work environments, inclusive cultures, and effective practices. From this standpoint, cultivating a thriving and productive workforce is no longer an ancillary concern; instead, prioritising employee wellbeing becomes an imperative to running a prosperous business.
In line with its commitment to helping member grow their businesses, NGIV allocated the Wellbeing of Business Communities Grant, received from the Victorian Government, to a project aimed at enhancing workplace mental health among its member businesses. Titled Creating Mentally Healthy Workplaces: An Integrated Approach, this project takes inspiration from the National Mental Health Commission’s Blueprint for Mentally HealthyWorkplaces
The project aims to actively involve the workforce in enhancing workplace mental health by:
» reducing stigma around mental ill health by raising wellbeing literacy and promoting dialogue
» increasing understanding of psychosocial hazards, and risk mitigation strategies
» providing resources to support individual mental health and early help-seeking
» establishing a community of practice to promote workplace mental health across the industry.
The project is built upon the Thrive at Work framework, which has been developed by leading Australian researchers at the Future of Work Institute. This framework encompasses three pillars that encapsulate the central priorities in workplace mental health: protecting mental health, responding to mental ill-health, and promoting thriving. Each pillar is made up of three essential building blocks, designed to support the attainment of the associated outcome.
The project launched at the end of June, with a workshop series designed to increase participants’ understanding of psychosocial hazards and employer obligations, and build capability to identify and respond to mental ill-health. The workshops were a valuable opportunity for participants to share their expertise and learn from each other’s experiences. The workshops also introduced practical resources to assist engagement around mental health and wellbeing.
The resources included a set of talking points covering topics such as anxiety and depression, workplace mental health, and taking action to support a work colleague. Additionally, two posters were provided for break rooms and other employee spaces. The first is a self-assessment tool that frames mental health as a dynamic state and encourages individual to think about how they are doing in the moment, and steps they can take support their mental health. The second promotes five simple and effective ways that people can improve their psychological and emotional health.
The COVID-19 pandemic was challenging in many ways. However, one unexpected upside was people and governments prioritising mental health and wellbeing. This triggered a virtuous cycle of activity. Moving forward, the critical issue will be sustaining this momentum. The industry possesses a wealth of knowledge and lived experience of mental health that can be harnessed as a powerful catalyst for positive change. In the upcoming months, NGIV will be bringing industry champions together through a series of discussions to explore gaps, initiatives, and opportunities for enhancing workplace mental health and well-being. The world of retail: Challenges and opportunities

We caught up with Mario Diaco, owner of Diaco’s Garden Nursery, to gain valuable insights into the world of retail and explore the existing challenges and potential opportunities in the ever-changing retail landscape.
“First and foremost, it’s been a relatively quiet period for us in terms of overall business activity. Last year’s lacklustre spring, combined with unfavourable weather conditions since then, has impacted the footfall in our nursery. We continued a series of very successful Zoom sessions through June and July this year. It is an excellent way of reinforcing that essential partnership between retailer and supplier.
We involved mainly plant growers but added two allied goods suppliers as well. I do believe we tend to overlook the importance of our allied suppliers at times. Plants need help to grow and flourish. Independent Garden Centres, i.e., you, are best placed to advise your customers on these products.
It is interesting to see Garden Centres sales growth in giftware and even clothing over the years. Some centres are now devoting more space and effort into gifts and homewares than traditional gift shops. It is clearly paying off in terms of profit with careful management and control. Remember what Debra Templar says though: “Don’t let your giftware have a Birthday!”
Winter is a time to plan, so make the most of it and be ready for a super spring.

Growing media components have different properties which can be grouped into physical, chemical and biological properties. These properties all interact and the knowledge of treating and blending growing media ingredients provides the basis for the optimum plant growing environment.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Air Filled Porosity (AFP)
The AFP is the percentage of air occupying the growing media when it has been saturated with water and allowed to drain. AFP is influenced by the range of particle sizes in the growing media and measures the amount of oxygen available in the mix for root respiration and microbial activity. A greater amount of air in the media improves root growth, but with a higher AFP, media may require more frequent watering and nutrient leaching may increase. A growing media blend with a low AFP will require irrigating less often but will quickly become waterlogged and results in slower growth and greater potential for pest and disease issues.

Water Retention Efficiency is the capacity of a media to retain mois from overhead irrigation. This property influences nursery water consumption by determining how long containers must be irrigated to replace lost water. A growing media with a higher WRE is able t retain more of the water applied, therefore less is lost through leach The bottom line is that growing media formulations can significan influence water consumption and nutrient runoff, especially where sprinkler or drip irrigation is used. Switching to a high WRE growing media is a relatively inexpensive means of improving water and fertiliser use efficiency.

The growth in the use of coir as a growing media ingredient in recent years has increased the capacity of various growing media blends to absorb irrigation water /ssand based growing media has absorption rates in the range of 10-15mm/hr, however adding various rates of coir products can move this up to as high as 25mm/hr. Applying water at a rate that optimises growth, and doesn’t unnecessarily leach f r, , will result in faster growth and better plant health. Waater Retention Efficiency (WRE)
during potting. Increasing the bulk density of a growing media improves the stability of containers but will usually reduce the AFP.
The bulk density of a growing media should be considered when planning for plant transportation costs because of its impact on the weight of containers. Bulk density can also be used as a quick measure of how evenly growing media has been mixed. This is done by comparing the weight of samples of equal volume, from the same batch of growing media. Ideally, the bulk density of wet
growing media to suit most nursery situations is 1 litre of wet mix weighing less than 1 kg (<1 kg/L), with 1.2kg/L being the maximum suggested for general nursery use.
Shrinkage
Shrinkage refers to the ‘slumping’ of the growing media in the container over a period of time. Shrinkage causes changes in porosity, affecting AFP, WHC and bulk density which causes the unsteadiness of plants in containers. Depending on the length of the crop cycle, materials that decompose rapidly can result in a greater amount of shrinkage. Smaller organic particles tend to break down more readily than larger particles. For example, sawdust will shrink more quickly than barks, and should not
be used in long-term growing media types. Sand does not shrink but may reduce the AFP of the media due to its fine particle size. Plants may require staging (repotting) more frequently if shrinkage rates are high.
BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Freedom from pathogens
A composting process which exposes the organic materials to a minimum of 55˚C for at least three consecutive days should ensure growing media is free from plant pathogens. Standard composting procedures take several weeks (approx. 12) to complete thoroughly. The value of composting organic growing media ingredients which are likely to contain plant pathogenscanbethreefoldincluding pathogens can be three-fold including the removal of harmful pathogens, the potential for disease suppression of certain pathogens and an opportunity to address nitrogen consumption.
River sand is considered to be contaminated unless proven otherwise by adequate laboratory testing, whereas quarry-based san is considered pathogen free and i the recommended alternative.

Growers must know the specific pH ranges of their crops when establishing growing media pH values.
A key consideration is to test the pH of your growing media following delivery and during production and storage because the pH of a media changes over time. The pH of growing mediamaybeaffectedbythefertiliser

Electrical Conductivity (EC)
Electrical Conductivity is a measure of the total concentration of electrically charged particles (ions) in a solution and indicates the amount of soluble salt in the growing media. All fertilisers applied in nursery production are salts and EC can be measured to give a broad indication of the nutritional status of a growing media.
The EC of the growing media should meet, but not exceed the E requirements of the crops grown. For seedling media, the EC should not exceed 1.5dS/m, although som seedlings will not tolerate EC leve above 1 dS/m. For most other cro the EC should not exceed 2.2 dS/m However, it is important to note that EC does not identify deficien or toxic levels of specific nutrients A full laboratory analysis test is required to identify concentration of individual elements. Nitrogen Drawdown
Nitrogen Drawdown is a natural phenomenon seen in bark growin media which results in a significan reduction in plant available nitrog The reduction is caused by microorganisms using the available nitrogen in the process of breakin down the organic components of the growing media and making it unavailable to the plant. With pine bark this drawdown indicates continuing microbial activity and disease suppressive activity.

Storage

Ideally, a growing storage bay should have a concrete base and a cover to exclude contaminants. Some growers cover their growing media with tarpaulins or similar to prevent contamination. The storage area should be designed to ensure water does not come into contact with the growing media and drains away, including being sloped away from the rear toward the front. Timber walls should be disinfested (e.g., copper spray) between batches.

With the last of our beautiful crisp and colourful autumn days behind us, the new season brought a change in focus with stocks of bare-rooted plants a highlight of the day.
The Winter Gala BBQ and coffee Cart for June was jointly sponsored by NGIV Gold Industry Partners, Oasis and WorkSafe.
Oasis took the opportunity to recognise the amazing contribution of Jim Johnson upon his upcoming retirement. Jim has been an industry icon, having been involved in horticulture since 1978 to current day.
And it was a busy day for the second of our Trade Days of the Winter season in July. After some very cold weather, it was a reasonable start to the day, with dry, but cool, conditions.

Where do you work and what is your role?
I work at Van Schaik’s Bio Gro at our Dandenong site. I am the site’s Quality Assurance Officer.
How long have you worked there and how has your role progressed in that time?
I’ve been here for 3.5 years, in the QA position the entire time. My role began doing basic QC testing of potting mix batches in the lab, but has since progressed to cover process improvement, trial work, auditing, and compliance.
What/or who inspired you to choose horticulture?
It all happened by accident. I have previously worked in Microbiology and Food Safety, but wanted to try something a bit different and was lucky enough to end up where I did. My parents are keen gardeners though and I’ve gained much inspiration from them.
What are your achievements and ambitions within the industry??
My ambition is for Bio Gro to be recognised as the supplier of the best Growing Media on the market, while continuing to create new products out of recycled materials to help build a sustainable future.
Who has inspired you on your journey?
Our South Australian QA Officer, Matt Goetze, has played an instrumental role in my development. I’m always learning from him. The same goes for Michelle Torcasio, Bio Gro’s Sales Manager. She’s been in the business a long time and her understanding of potting mix is second-to-none.
What do you enjoy most about working in horticulture?
The best thing about working in Horticulture is the team that I work with. I also really enjoy getting out to visit customers to see how their stock is performing in our potting mix.
What is a typical day like for you?
A normal day includes base material monitoring, generation of potting mix formulations specific to our customers’ requirements, lab testing and internal auditing. But I like to change it up with customer visits whenever possible. Lately I’ve also been spending some setting up the QA procedures for our new site in Newbridge.
Why should more young people choose horticulture as a career?
Growing plants has so many benefits and I think everyone should try to develop their green thumb. There’s a lot of variety in the Horticulture industry and there’s plenty of opportunity for young people to kickstart their career and to develop their skills and knowledge.

I have a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Microbiology and Immunology. After joining Bio Gro though, I obtained a Certificate in Horticulture.
Tell us a bit about you; what you enjoy doing outside of work?
I spend much of my free time playing guitar and piano. I love writing music and performing on stage. I also really enjoy watching the footy and cricket, and finding new places to eat and drink.

Stunning Chelsea Australian Garden now open in Victoria
Nestled among the towering gums of the much-loved Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden on Wurundjeri Country, visitors can wander the winding paths, listen to the frogs in the billabong, and explore over 400 different species of native Australian plants at the stunning Chelsea Australian Garden.
The garden is Landscape Designer Phillip Johnson’s re-creation of the award-winning ‘Australian Garden’. In 2013, Phillip Johnson, Wes Fleming and the Trailfinders team's garden became the first ever Australian entry to win Gold at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show. The display was toured by the Queen and Prince Harry and was unanimously voted ‘Best in Show’ by the judges.
Ten years later, Phillip Johnson has re-created the garden in Olinda. The new garden is over 20 times the size of the original Chelsea Flower Show build, converting a section of the former Olinda Golf Course into a stunning botanic garden, supporting biodiversity and habitat creation in the area. It is a permanent display, featuring an enormous Waratah sculpture, waterfall and billabong. Over 15,000 plants have been used in the design, with over 400 different Australian species, including rare and endangered species such as the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis), which is listed as critically endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth).
Many of NGIV’s industry partners and members have helped to make the garden possible, including: Botanix Plant Supply, Fleming’s Nurseries, Established Tree Transplanters, Kenthurst Nursery, Yarra View Bushland Nursery, Kuranga Native Nursery, Native Plant Wholesalers, Oz Watergardens, Plant Multi Nursery, Proteaflora Nursery, Simon the Plant Man, Station Creek Tree Farm, True Blue Nursery, and Vaughan’s Australian Plants/Boutique Natives. The garden showcases sustainable and water-wise design, including an integrated bushfire protection system, solar power and the clever use of recycled and reclaimed materials, such as seating which was lovingly crafted from the Dandenong Ranges storm recovery program.
It also promotes and supports biodiversity through the creation of important native habitats for native plants and animals. This will encourage wildlife such as birds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Minister for Environment Ingrid Stitt stated, “This garden has been highly anticipated among nature lovers near and far. We are thrilled to be providing more opportunities for people to get into nature, and this garden will showcase Australia’s captivating and diverse native flora.”
The project was made possible thanks to a $3.8 million investment from the Victorian Government, $2.2 million from the Federal Government and $340,000 in funds raised by the People and Parks Foundation.
