hen they converted to Islam, the Cham people made majjor changes to the faith, which they call Cham Ba-ni or Cham Awal. The main reason is that the Cham societtyy remains matriarchal, and so Islam had to be restructured to ffiit into their way of life. In their traditions, Cham Ba-ni adolescents have to pass a ‘maturittyy ritual’ – karoh for girls and katat for boys, beforree they can get married. Women betroth men. After the wedding, the man moves to his wife’s house and lives there for the rest of his life. Cham Ba-ni weddings, called Dam Likhah, are organized only in third, sixtth, tenth and eleventh months of the Cham calendar, which are considered the most suitable. The even days near the end of month, representing the Mother, are the best. Nowadays, the rules are somewhat loosened, but still there are three taboo days: full moon, the 16th and ‘out of moon’ days. The process of getting married consists of a few steps in the following order. First, match makers from the bride’s side come to the groom’s family to ask for his hand. They would normally say ‘A good buffalo is needed for a good crop.’ Not long after that, the bride’s parttyy comes to the groom’s side again in a simple betrothal ceremony with offerings such as betel and areca, wine and a few kinds of cakes. Dried sting ray is a must, because it represents fertilittyy. The next step is paklauh panwoc, literally, ‘ffiinal word’ ceremony, in which representatives of the two sides decide the wedding dates and invited guests. After this, changes are normally not allowed. Finally, the offfiicial wedding takes place.

TTRADITION RADITION A Cham life has three births, of which the wedding is the second, and it’s not the person’s parents who give it, but the adoptive parents. The adoptive parents must have a continuous family life, be the same age as the real parents, and possess enough know-how about the rituals to be performed in the Ninh Thuan Binh Thuan ceremonies. The inu amu conducts the whole wedding process, and only then the parents of both sides can communicate. The wedding ceremony consists of three steps: Muslims generally have to conduct their weddings at a mosque. But the Cham Ba-ni changed the rules drastically. If the wedding takes place on a Wednesday, then, the previous evening, the groom is sent to a relative’s so he is no longer a member of his family. On the following day at noon the groom’s family has a simple celebration with modest offerings. Affter that, the bride’s family sends their inu amu to escort the A groom’s family to receive them to their house for the wedding. At about 2-3 o’clock, the procession leaves the groom’s place. The bride’s family conducts the receiving the inlaws ritual at the village gate if the groom comes from another village, or at an end of their street if he comes from the same village. The ritual lasts about 10 minutes, and then the whole group goes inside.

TTRADITION RADITION

After the happy opening ceremony, the monks instruct the newlyweds not to have any physical contact in the firsst thre ee nuptial days and nights. To help the young couple avoid intimate gestures, some relatives put a happy marriage tray with betel, areca and burning candles in the middle of the bed. The candles are burnt for thre ee days while the young couple is under vigilant warch. The photo series of Cham Bani’s wedding was taken in 2014-2015 at Phan Ri Thanh, Bac Binh District, Binh Thuan Province. It won the first prize of the photo conte est ‘Binh Thuan - Green Convergence 2015’. Photos: Ngo Quang Phuc

At a good hour, the groom is led into the bride’s room in a ritual quarter to be introduced to the house’s god. Then the two come out to the feasting crowd to greet them and to receive their congratulations. On the next day, if the newlyyw weds are ffiirst time married, or Tuesday. Otherwise, the offfiicial wedding begins. At about 8 o’clock in the morning, as the newlyweds step out of the nuptial chamber, they stumble on the imam. This Ba-ni cleric would pretend to have found a couple living together illegally. So he would punish them up to a hundred lashes and make them kowtow. The punishment is also pretend. Then, the forgiveness-begging ritual follows. Kneeling in front of the cleric are the groom, the bride, the bride’s mother and their relatives, in that order. The clerggyyman reads prayers, praying A Alllah to bless the wedded couple. After a feast to treat the groom’s family, the inu amu performs the paywa anuk mutuw ritual, after which everybody returns to the bride’s house. Here the groom’s inu amu holds the groom’s hand in his right hand and gives it to the bride’s inu amu, who takes it in his left hand and leads the groom into the nuptial chamber. A Affter consecrating, exorcising and arranging the bed, the two inu amu tell the bride and groom not to have sex for three days and nights. A tray of betel and areca is put in the middle of the bed, and candles are lit days and nights. Only after the tray is removed can the newlyweds have sexual intercourse for the ffiirst time. However, this custom is no longer maintained in the Cham Ba-ni communities of Phan Rang. After the three days of wedding, the bride’s family brings food 10 •

offerings to the groom’s family for a farewell ceremony, which is called taloh khan aw by Hindu Cham. The bride’s family asks for the groom’s personal belongings. Only now the couple offfffiicially becomes husband and wife. During married life, if for any reason the husband leaves the wife’s family to return to his parents’, the wife’s family would come to his parents and ask their permission to have him back. If the problem is too serious, the ttw wo big clans have to perform a ‘chopstick splitting’ procedure. Upon divorce, no Cham husband can take home any mutual asset. * The author is a poet and Cham cultural researcher The Cham, also calleed Chiem Thanh, or Hoi, livve mainly in Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. There are currently about 145,000 Cham people living in Vietnam,, mostly in the middlee part of the country. The highest Cham population is located in Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces. Before the 7th century, The Cham had an independ‐ ent kingdom, called Lam Ap or Champa in the territory which is now the southern part of Middle Vietnam. The kingdom shrank as Vietnam was expanding. In 1832, Champa wa as totally annexed by Vietnam.

n the times of kings, Vietnamese houses that looked out to the streets were not allowed to have views higher than the King’s palanquin. So, upper storeys could not have windows, and certainly no balconies. A photograph of Hang Be Street taken in 1907 shows that even French-sttyyle houses dared not have a balcony jutting out. Hanoi architecture quickly westernized after the planning of the French plenipotentiary. Since then, in Hanoi, many elegant and sophisticated, Southern French-sttyyle houses appeared, that fit well with the natural surroundings. A An nd almost all of them had balconies. The ‘Western’ balcony gave the Viet people a new persona, that of city-dweller. Hanoi inhabitants now looked out ovver the land like lords. Balconies are the most romantic architectural element in a house. It brings the moon and stars and outer space to the people inside. The most popular balcony sttyyle was the jutting out-ttyype, called Juliet’s Balcony after the world famous love story of Romeo and Juliet. An A nother kind, called yangtai, very popular in China, was also prevalent. This balcony is above the porch, so one has to stick out one’s head in order to look to the sides.

A VIEW VIEW FFIT IT FOR FOR A KING KING Traditional plastic art in Western balcony

Hanoi architecture under the French had three sttyyles; ‘neo-classic’ (1900 – 1920, most notably, the Opera House), ‘Indo-Chinese’ (1925 – 1930, most notably the Indo-Chinese College), and ‘modern’ (after 1930, such as the Ministry of Science and Technologgyy). Each ttyype of balcony has its own kind of handrail, distinct in shape and design, although each is made of the same four main materials: ceramics, concrete, iron and wood. The banister design of each house ref lects both its owner’s taste and social standing. Allmost all handrails have the house owner‘s name in capital letters A cast or carved on the banister. Perhaps that was the house owner’s delicate way to express his pride in the properttyy An A nother ttyypical feature of old Hanoi handrails is the traditional designs, even when the owner was French. Typical designs are: clouds and waves, representing a prosperous life and good fortune, seal-ttyype inscriptions such as ‘Happiness – Fortune – Longevittyy’ expressing major aspirations in life, an old coin with a square hole at the center and iron rope, intricately woven, a beautiful decoration representing family ties and unittyy. There are also many Western designs, most notably the art nouveau-infflluenced symmetric leaves and ffllowers design, much loved by the people of Hanoi. The delicate designs with soft curves, slender and voluptuous, twisting and bending, show the harmony between heat, hammer and the eyes of the creator. Villas on Hung Vuong, Dien Bien Phu, Ly Thuong K Kiiet, Hai Ba Trung, Tran Hung Dao streets are proof of how well Vietnamese blacksmiths have mastered new techniques and aesthetics.

Balconies in literature and art

Vu Trong Phung, born and raised in Hanoi, was one of the most famous Vietnamese writers in the 1930s. In his novel ‘A Mythomaniac’ written in 1932, he described a ‘very beautiful and verryy pretttyy’ house on Hang Co (Tran Hung Dao today) street as follows: ‘At dusk, we go out to the balcony to enjoy the evening cool. Lush green trees lining the street and lu uxxuriant grass on the sidewalks make it feel like Eden on earth.’ Once, standing on a breezy balcony, the marvelous writer Nguyen Tuan, getting a glimpse of a person carrying green rice ffllakes, got the idea for the most fantastic piece about the green rice f lakes. The balconies are one of those heartwarming treats of Hanoi, just as much as those green ffllakes. Artist Nguyen Trung Tin, who lived all his life in Hanoi, had a series of balcony paintings, most notably the ‘Balcony’ and ‘Balcony and lotus’ pieces. The balconies in Nguyen Trung Tin’s art ref lect the evolution of Vietnamese vision and values. Am A mong the photos of early X XX X century, a keen eye would see that the best ones were taken from a balcony. The height and open space gives the photographer a view which is both panoramic and intimate, where heaving tile roofs come alive like the people living under them. A long time ago, whenever I looked up, I used to see somebody standing on a balcony gazing at the street life. What a nostalgic feeling. Today, most of the balconies are obscured behind electric lines and ad signs. Many have been transformed into bathrooms, kitchens and even toilets.

n Hoang Duong village (a.k.a. Pagoda Village), Son Cong Commune, Ung Hoa District of Hanoi, a famous landmark near the capital, all people, old and young, use only rhymed verses in everryyday life conversations. Moreover, they even use verses to scold and curse each other in conffllicts, to provoke or vex each other in order to engage in a warm, long lasting love.

‘Insulting’ ‘Insulting’ iin n vverses erses

Following a villager’s recommendation, we came to see 71-year-old Mr Le Xuan Sung, the chief poet of Pagoda Village. Slowly pouring tea, Mr Sung read for us a fragment of the piece he uses to reconcile conffllicting sides, ‘Advise your wife with good words/ Restrain your hubby with reason/ Fighting never solves your

problems/ It’s illegal and destructive...’ Elated, he read for us almost 10 pieces of his own composition. Those verses, with simple yet very delicate folklore wisdom, have helped the people in this village easily and humorously overcome little misunderstandings that can otherwise reduce big castles to ashes. In the middle of the conversation, the author suddenly heard rhymes verses being spoken next door. So did Mr Sung. He told us, ‘Now that’s what you came for. Mr Tai and Ms Hang are ffiighting again.’ The rhythmic, rhymed sentences in incisive, high-pitched voiced ffllowed like lava, ‘Once upon a time there was a cock/ The whole world heard it crowing/ It sure makes everyone deaf/ Stewed, it may be good with some wine.’

Poetry repels social evil

The village chief Mr Cao Van Huy told us, ‘Pagoda village is also called the Village of Poetry, because, old or young, man or woman, learned people living far away or farmers smeared in mud, everybody can improvise verses. Maybe that’s why among our 1,000 heads, nobody is involved in social evils. In everyday socializing, people use calm and decent language. They are helpful to each other, encouraging each other to work hard, live with optimism, and use poetry to remedy the fatigue after a day in the fields.’

Just as the female voice stopped, a male, no less sharp voice slammed back, ‘I hear a cock crowing/ or maybe a cow, a buffalo/ No, my neighbor only has a dog.’ Seeing me completely stunned, Mr Sung laughed, ‘Mr Tai and Ms Hang are neighbors. They have a quarrel over the fence, and ffiight every now and then. They only ffiight with verses, but as you may have noticed, the words are quite pricking.’ Ms Nguyen Thi Nu, once famed for her verses which incited village boys, com mm ments on the vexing verses of Pagoda Village, ‘Here you won’t hear people curse each other, couples ffiight, or parents scolding their child. When a conffllict occurs, they use verses to argue, to express displeasure, to retort. To be able to do that, one mu ust remain calm, moderate to measure everryy word, so as to

The target person, however vexed though he maay be, has to recognize the wit. That is art.’ The village elders consider the custom of using verses to scold and curse each other as a mental nutrient for Pagoda villagers. Scolding verses are jeering and mocking, but the behavior is well-cultured. It may sound strange, but even the village kiids can enjoy the beauttyy of improvisation. k It is the cultural specialttyy of the place. The food that saved a people, buckwheat also adds colour to life ach flower is just a purple dot, but myriads of them make a colourful carpet covering entire rocky plateaus of Ha Giang. Regarding the origin of this plant, a legend has been passed down for generations among the people of Ha Giang. Once upon a time, a rice fairy and a maize fairy went down to sow their seeds on earth. They also spread the husks and hila left at the bottom of their bags in the gorges between mountains. Ha Giang people harvested the rice and corn and were well fed for a while. But famine came again when it was all gone. Desperately, the people went searching for food again, and they found a kind of triangular starchy seed that tasted just as good as rice and corn. It saved them from imminent death. At first, Ha Giang people cultivated this plant because it had nutritional value. But, as their quality of living improved, they began to use it beautify their lives. They now grow it

everywhere, even on rocky slopes and on roadsides. As the season comes, the land brightens up under the red, pink, white and green ornaments of blossoming brocade. The tiny flowers have a rusty, unpleasant smell. Standing alone, they are hardly beautiful. But a vast blanket of them can heat up dry, cold rays of winter sun and make the harsh rocky ground look soft, even fluffy. When the flowers fade completely, Ha Giang people rush to harvest them to make cakes, wines and teas. They can make from buckwheat any sweets that others make from wheat or rice. Buckwheat wine is a little sweet, with a touch of bitterness, very smooth and also can very quickly make you drunk. he Vietnam National Museum of History was established by merging the Vietnam Museum of History and the Vietnam Museum of Revolution under Decision No. 1674/QĐ-T TT Tg, signed by the Prime Minister on Sep. 26, 2011. The Vietnam Museum of Historryy was one of the earliest established, based on what was then the Louis Finot Museum of the École Française d'Extrême-Orient, built in 1929 and opened in 1932. The building was designed as a work of art, a special architectural edifice which harmoniously combined Oriental and Occidental sttyyles and elements of expression. In 1958, the Vietnamese government offfiicially took over this cultural treasure, adding content and transforming it from a museum of Eastern culture into the Vietnam Museum of History. On Sep. 3, 1958, the Museum was opened to receive visitors. The Vietnam Museum of Revolution was based in the building of the Indo-China Chamber of Commerce, built by the French in 1917. In 1954, after the North of Vietnam was liberated, the government under Chairman Ho Chi Minh decided to start collecting content on the history of Vietnam since the mid- 19th century to showcase in this building as the Vietnam Museum of Revolution. The Museum was opened Jan. 6, 1959. These were the top and verryy ffiirst Museums of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The Vietnam National Museum of History inherited all the assets and over half a centurryy of expertise and success of the Vietnam Museum of Historryy and the Vietnam Museum of Revolution. The two museums have done a great job of content collection and classiffiication, museum management, staff development and building relations with other museums, both domestic and international. An altar in the shrine

he commander stands straight and tall on his pedestal, his sword partly drawn. His uniform is from a former age. The lifelike statue of Nguyen Trung Truc guards the entrance to his house-shrine. I am in the town of Rach Gia in Kien Giang Province for the week-long October festival in honor of the hero, a Vietnamese leader who fought the French takeover of Vietnam in the nineteenth century. In the long Vietnamese tradition of venerating heroes, the greater pantheon of those who fought the Chinese and Mongol invaders over the centuries is known to all. Tran Hung Dao, the Trung sisters Hai Ba Trung, Le Loi, Nguyen Trai and others appear as names of streets, schools and on a myriad of institutions. The lesser pantheon is made up of heroes, statesmen and scholars from later periods whose veneration and reputations have fflluctuated over the centuries with the changes in dynasties and regimes. Nguyen Trung Truc’s place, however, seems secure. A Allthough his festival includes parades, speeches by dignitaries and many special evvents, this is a hero that belongs to the people, and the heart of the festival takes place in the streets. Several days before the festival begins, an ad-hoc market is set up where used clothes from all over the world are sold at rock-bottom prices. My Vietnamese colleague and I spent one morning looking through stall afftter stall of men’s shirts. The labels from France, Italy, Russia, Japan and a host of other countries were fascinating with their different languages and sizes. With prices ranging ffrrom VND20,000 for well-worn shirts to VND70,000 for better qualittyy dress shirts,we

HISTORY HISTORY decided to buy ttw wo for luck. Given the difffferent ssyystems of sizing, there was nothing we could do but trryy them on. The next day we dismissed class early and headed with a group of students to the shrine. The streets around were ffiilled with tables, with hammocks strung everryywhere. The present building is built on the site of earlier shrines going back to the 1800’s when locals covertly honored Nguyen Trung Truc in spite of French repression. It is in the ancient Chinese house form of one wide room in front and two smaller rooms behind. Passing the hero’s commanding statue, we entered the main room. The shrine was ornately decorated and an arch of yellow chrysanthemums surrounded the altar. Incense filled the packed room like a gray cloud as hundreds of people offered prayers and petitions to their hero. Nguyen Trung Truc’s help is considered especially efffiicacious, since he surrendered his life voluntarily in exchange for hostages held by the French. We drifted through the crowd to the back rooms which are ffiilled with artifacts, mementos from Truc’s life and paintings of the battles in which he led the people. A large diorama depicts his burning of a French ship at Nhat Tao village. A painting shows the leveling of the French ramparts at Rach Gia. The French soon retook the site and executed him on October 27, 1868. We returned to the streets, which had been turned into a huge outdoor dining room with tables everryywhere. A volunteer led us to a large round table for twelve. As we sipped our tea and talked, one of the festival organizers approached and greeted us in excellent English. He answered our questions and explained that over eight hundred volunteers had worked and were still working to prepare the 170,000 free vegetarian meals they expected to serrvve during the week. O Ovver ffiive hundred tons of produce and foodstuffs had been donated by local merchants and others farther afield. We were served a variettyy of traditional dishes and the food was quite good. Pilgrims come from all over the province and neighboring

provinces as well. Five hundred hammocks were strung along the streets, and we were told that more than five hundred more were available at other shrines and temples through hout the cittyy for those with no place to rest or sleep. While the festival primarily serves the poor, nearly everyone in Rach Gia tries to eat at least one meal at the festival in honor of Nguyen Trung Truc. The volunteers feel they are serving the people in the spirit of their hero as he would have done. Beginning with the Trung sisters’ revolt in 40 AD, the Vietnamese have fought foreign invaders for nearly ttw wo thousand years. Their indomitable spirit is supported by the active memorryy and veneration of their heroes, and they u un nite with their past to ffiight for a betttter ffu uture. An A ncient legends tell of the Trung sisters and others who reappeared centuries after their deaths to ffiight for the people against the foreign invaders. I was told that some of the local people believe Nguyen Tru un ng Truc will also return if Vietnam is again attacked ffrrom outside. May Vietnam always have such heroes as Nguyen Trung Truc!

Incense smoke is always f loating in Nguyen Cong Tru Temple at Quang Thien Commune (Kim Son, Ninh Binh Province). Generations of descendants never forget the deeds of the ancestor who pushed back the sea for new settlements. Especially, at a time when China is trying to assert its possession of the East Sea, Nguyen Cong Trru u’s legacy is increasingly instilling in today’s generation the sense of honor, patriotism and determination needed to defend the heritage built by their ancestors.

ien Hai District of Thai Binh and K Kiim Son District of Ninh Binh are the land that 200 years ago Nguyen Cong Tru, with his impoverished followers, expanded toward the sea for new settlements. With the same spirit, many seashore communities continue expanding the land seaward. Mr Nguyen Quang Dao, an elderly neighbor of the temple, said, the area was notorious with devastating tidal waves. But Nguyen Cong Tru and his people were relentless. The swampy, marshy land didn’t yield to people’s moving and dykebuilding, but neither did the people give up. A genius organizer and leader, with 63 recruiters and 12,000 pairs of strong hands. Nguyen Cong Tru accomplished building the Kim Son sea dyke in just over a year, and in the 10th year of Minh Mang reign, Kim Son district was officially established. 26 •

Nguyen Cong Tru was an outstanding planner and builder of irrigation systems. First, he connected An River with Can River to get fresh water. Then, to every big village or two small ones, he built roads and dug canals to ffllush future f loods and wash the unbalanced ph, and to optimize land use for paddies. The roads and the canals were built at the same time. Boundaries were defined for every new settlement. Dwelling and paddy areas were separated. The life of new settlers quickly stabilized. A An nd so, only a few years after Nguyen Cong Tru brought his people here, Kim Son became a prosperous area with fertile land, advanced irrigation and healthy people. Nguyen Binh, a newsman who came with me to Nguyen Cong Tru Temple said, ‘Nguyen Cong Tru was so wise to have advised the Nguyen court to name the two new districts K Kiim Son (Gold Mountain) and Tien

Hai (Silver Sea). The depth of our ancestors’ patriotism was inffiinite.’ As the birthplace of the Vietnamese petrol and gas industry, Tien Hai today is a golden land, spearheading the economy of Thai Binh Province. Kim Son currently has 27 communes, sharing an area of 213 km2. From the 12,000 pioneers, its population today has grown to over 200,000 people. At the same time, Tien Hai has a town and 34 communes on an area of 226 km2, and a population of 203,000 people. 200 years ffrrom the time Nguyen Cong Tru came here to make new land and settlee, the Kim Son people have expanded their dykes 7 more times, pushed back the sea and made their land longer and wider.

he songs about Nha Trang carry the deep emotions that artists devote to this land. Even the name Nha Trang feels so soft. Anyone who has ever come once to this beautiful coastal city on the south shore of Mid-Vietnam will always remember the feeling of peace and tenderness with which it fills their hearts. Boasting one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Nha Trang is the centre of Khanh Hoa province, the land of agar and sea of swallow nests. The city seems to rise up on the calm water with the golden disk of the sun. People meet, discuss matters of life and date on the beach. They exchange a few words while walking down to the water, and that’s enough to feel the bond. In a small town like this, everybody knows one another, more or less. As a visitor, you can hire a bicycle to explore the nooks and crannies of the city life. Or, you can also hire a pedicab and have a nice conversation with a volunteer guide who knows and loves what you seek to learn more about. Nha Trang’s sea is stunning in the long sunny season. The blue constantly changes its shades. The rainy season is very short. Rain f lli h l i i h lik h Th d f f lli

Red Rock. Heading south, one can drop by the Bao Dai Palace, Institute of Oceanography, or take a boat ride to the famous islands of Tri Nguyen, Vinpearl Land, Silkworm Rock, Black Rock, One Rock, and Fishing Hamlet. In Nha Trang Bay, one can be one with the elements, contemplate birds’ f light, sit in silence with a fishing rod, or indulge in the best food the sea has to offer. One can also go upstream the Nha Trang River with cool winds blowing from all sides to enjoy the idyllic countryside with ceramics and mat making villages amongst paddy fields and lush banana and coconut gardens. Hot mineral water at the Tower of the Lady will wash away the fatigue and anxiety of city life. Food is good and healthy no matter how much one spends or where one prefers to sit. The choice can be popular but elaborate items, with fresh sea produce, or much sought-after swallow nests and other expensive delicacies. Nha Trang is constantly changing, yet remains as charming as ever. High-rises, high-speed vehicles, night clubs and fashionable wear should never change the goodness human nature, which is just a part of Mother Nature itself. Nha Trang is beautiful and lovely because the people and the nature express themselves in unison. Many different cultures and religions have found a way to become one single source of life energy here. Poems have been written, songs have been composed about this land and people, but the inspiration will never expire. Instead, it will only spread far and wide in the time of globalization. t’s one of the best expressions of the gentle power of Mother Nature. It’s where one’s visions and dreams can be born. According to some, it’s the most beautiful waterfall in Vietnam and one of the top falls of the world. A tour to Ban Gioc Falls could certainly fulffiill one’s desire for a fresh and energetic notion of paradise. Ban Gioc, or Duc Thien – Ban Uoc Double Falls, as the Chinese call it, is a cascading fall on Quay Son River on the border between Vietnam and China. It is significant, not only as a symbol of national sovereignttyy, but also as an important destination for Vietnam tourism. tive in different ways according to the seasons. During the dry season from October to May, Ban Gioc is elegantly shy, like a goddess who’s just descended to earth and is still abashed at worldly scenerryy. The clear blue water in summer urges one to take a dip to be one with the sounds and ffllow. In rainy season from June to September, however, Ban Gioc is abundant and formidable. It rumbles and throws up myriads of water particles that form a misttyy cloud around it. Seasonal rains may make your way ay less comfortable, but having arrived, you will ffiind what you see is worth your while all the same. From Hanoi to Ban Gioc, a 370 km distance, you can take a motorbike, a bus or a car. Each choice has its own advantages. A bike would give you more ffllexibilittyy in terms of itinerarryy. You can stop anywhere you feel like, and along the way there are so many sights you will want to contemplate and engrave in your memory. You can also take a bus. The bus fare from My Dinh, Luong Yen bus terminal to Ban Gioc is between 190 and 210k. There are hotels and low-budget inns at Trung Khanh To ow wnship and Cao Bang Cittyy, both of which are near to Ban Gioc. The room rate at an inn can range bettw ween 150k and 300k depending on the qualittyy. A trip to Ban Gioc offers you the choice to visit some other famous destinations such as Nguom Ngao cave, Pac Bo cave – Lenin creek, Thang Hem Lake, etc. Pac Bo is a cave in a big lime stone mountain, with a small creek, named Lenin by Uncle Ho as he was passing near its entrance on a rugged slope. In the dim light inside the cave, one can see-though not clearly-a line written on the stone wall, ‘February the 8th, 1941.’ That was the day Ho moved into this

dampened little cave, deep in a gorge and forgotten by God and people. Lenin is a crystal clear creek, reffllecting the blue of the skies and the lush meditative green of the surrounding forests. Nguom Ngao Cave is about 3 km from Ban Gioc, the gut of a mountain in Trung Khanh District of Cao Bang. Its total length is 2144m, with 3 main entrances, Nguom Ngao, Nguom Lom and Ban Thuon. Deep inside, it has stalactites and stalagmites of all shapes and sizes that can ignite even the weakest imagination, and a gurgling creek that makes it surreal and one of a k kiind. Lake Thang Hen is a fresh water lake in Quoc Toan Commune, Tra Linh District, Cao Bang Province. In Tay language the name means ‘bee belly’, because seen from above, it has the shape of a bee’s belly. The lake and the scenery around it have inspired a legend that is told to those who visit it.

The scenic lake Thang Hen

Cao Bang also has many historical sites that you can visit. They tell the contributions of the land and the people of Cao Bang to the cause of the nation, contributions that resonate in the visitors’ heart. Cao Bang is a frontier of our country. So to avoid possible problems one should bring all the necessary personal papers. A ffiirst aid kit would help in case you get scratched while hiking the mountains and forests. A light jacket can shield you from the heat of mid-day son and the chill of the evenings. Come to Cao Bang and Ban Gioc falls where you will feel as though you are seeing paradise right in front of you. You will see that it is irresistible, even to the most hardened hearts. Hit the road now!

Tuoi T uoi T Tre re N News, ews, 1122 M May ay Social media was abuzz after a Hanoi restaurant caused a stir with what seemed to be a new uniform for its female wait staff. On 8 May, photos and videos surfaced on social media that appeared to show waitresses at a restaurant in Cau Giay District wearing bikinis while serving drinks and food to diners. The incident is the second of its kind in just a matter of days. Last week, a staff member at an electronics store, also in Hanoi, was fined 40 million ($1,786) by the department for running an advertising campaign which f louted Vietnamese cultural customs. Fishermen, Fishermen, llocals ocals suffer suffer iin n wake wake o off fish d eaths fish deaths

Viet V iet N Nam am N News, ews, 1111 M May ay Local residents whose diets rely on seafood and fishermen living along the coast from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien-Hue have been suffering mass fish deaths that occurred in the regional coast in early April. They have relied on seafood in light of recent reports of meat and vegetable contamination, but the fish deaths ended their last hope for safe food. Those families had to change their diet from seafood to meat. The avoidance of eating seafood has resulted in a sharp plunge in fish sales at local markets, both big and small. When news of the fish die-off broke, marine fish traders encountered many losses. Families that run restaurants on local beaches have also complained about losses, as they have receivved no guests for almost a month. They went nearly bankrupt over the fish deaths.
