Barn Stars

Seeing stars? Barn stars, that is, on area barns. More commonly known as hex signs, they are the best-known art form of the PA Dutch. Berks County has more colorful barn stars than anywhere else. What do the symbols mean? Follow our Barn Star Art Tour to get the scoop on these popular celestial images.

Pennsylvania Dutch

Horse-drawn buggies, kids tending to roadside stands, distelfinks, shoofly pie, barn stars, and a language that isn’t quite German are just some of the other clues that let you know you’re in PA Dutch country. Enjoy every encounter with our odd, unique, delicious, and fascinating culture and traditions!

The Pagoda

By all accounts, the Pagoda is our most curious attraction. For over a century, it has welcomed visitors to the region from its perch atop Mt. Penn. How did this Asian-inspired structure come to watch over the City of Reading and become a beloved landmark? Find the answer with a visit to the Pagoda. While the Pagoda isn’t open to the public, you can walk the grounds, read information about its origin, and see the building close-up from dawn to dusk daily.

Main Streets

Pennsylvania’s Americana Region has five Main Streets, each with a personality all its own. Visit Reading, West Reading, Hamburg, Boyertown, and Kutztown, to uncover the very different temperaments of our favorite thoroughfares. As you get to know our main streets, you’ll better understand our diverse county.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary

Raptors! Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is the first refuge for birds of prey in the world. Pretty cool, right? Come fall, the sanctuary offers the best seat in town, possibly North America, to watch the annual raptor migration. Lace up your hiking boots, grab your binoculars, and head to Hawk Mountain for spectacular views of these magnificent birds as they soar above the mountain. Get ready to be wowed!

Trains

For railroad lovers, a trip to Berks County wouldn’t be complete without a ride on one of our local trains, or a visit to our Reading Railroad Heritage Museum. The most curious thing about Berks County and trains; despite our history, we no longer have rail service in the region… but we’re working on it!

Self-Guided Tours

Our popular Barn Star Art and Covered Bridge tours offer detailed directions and cool tidbits about local culture and historical sites. The newest addition to our self-guided tours is BrewHaHa. The trail guides craft beer and mead enthusiasts to brew pubs, meaderies,

Biking Fun

Berks County offers exceptional spots to enjoy all kinds of outdoor fun, like mountain biking on the Greater Reading Trail System (GRTS). The International Mountain Biking Association designated it a Bronze Level Ride Center™, one of only 40 centers worldwide. The trails are meticulously cared for and continue to grow in miles and experiences.

What makes our trails unique? Unlike most mountain biking trails, ours interconnect and provide jump-offs in urban centers. All it takes is one spin to recognize how incredible they are.

Enjoy your time in Pennsylvania’s Americana Region, and please share images of your favorite Berks County curiosities with us at #PaAmericana | #BerksCounty.

Spring

If the spring weather has you itching to get outside, make Pennsylvania’s Americana Region your destination. Hike, bike, fish, kayak, and picnic in local parks and rec areas. Or try a railbike excursion at Colebrookdale Railroad. Schedule a seasonally-themed train ride and attend local events like West Reading’s French Fry Fest, Muhlenberg’s Spring Fest, and the ever-popular World War II Weekend. Berks County summers revolve around festivals, concerts, and beat-the-heat activities. When temperatures rise, Blue Marsh Lake offers a cool reprieve from the heat with swimming, boating, and paddle boarding fun. Curious about our PA Dutch culture? Attend the Kutztown Folk Festival, an annual celebration of the unique customs, traditions, and folklife of the PA Dutch. Some of our favorite festivals, RiverFest, Reading Pride Celebration, and the always delicious Taste of Hamburg-er Festival, provide a great way to spend the season’s final days.

Fall in Pennsylvania’s Americana Region buzzes with festivals and seasonal activities. September welcomes the Chile Pepper Food Festival, the NHRA Nationals, Oley Valley Community Fair and many more regional events. Reading Liederkranz’s annual Oktoberfest brings Germany to Berks County with authentic foods, drinks, and entertainment. Leaf peepers love the fantastic views of changing foliage from the lookouts of Hawk Mountain, and kids can’t resist spooky lantern tours of Crystal Cave or the corn mazes of Mast Farm. The arts also shine with GoggleWorks’ Pumpkin Palooza, Reading Film Fest, and IX Art Show Imagine This.

What a deal! William A. Witman built the Pagoda in 1908 to cover a hole in Mt. Penn left by his quarry. He intended to use it as a luxury hotel, but misfortune led to foreclosure, and the Pagoda never opened. Luckily, a local businessman paid Witman’s banknote in exchange for the Pagoda’s deed. In 1911 he sold the building to the city for $1.00. Since then, the Pagoda has been cared for by the people of Reading.

Kutztown

Kutztown is a college town and home of the Kutztown Folk Festival, but have you ever explored the amenities of its lovely Main Street? Browse the bookstores, galleries, antique shops, boutiques, and numerous eateries – perfect for all those hungry students.

Surrounding attractions like Folino Estate Vineyard, Rodale Institute, Allentown & Auburn Railroad, the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center, and Crystal Cave make for fascinating side trips. In fact, Crystal Cave is Pennsylvania’s first show cave. Upon its discovery, curious visitors traveled from near and far to explore the natural wonder. Its constant temperature of 54 degrees makes it a “cool” place to visit on a hot summer day.

@HOTDADCALENDAR

What do Elton John, Sting, the Harlem Globe Trotters, and Taylor Swift have in common? Easy! All have performed at venues on Penn Street in Reading. The street could easily be dubbed the entertainment hub of Berks County.

Visitors and locals flock to the Miller Center for the Arts, the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, Santander’s Arena, and Performing Arts Center, and DoubleTree by Hilton Reading for concerts, sporting events, comedy shows, and much more.

Favorite eateries like The Peanut Bar, Judy’s on Cherry and Saucony Creek at Franklin Station make their homes along this busy corridor too. All in all, time spent in Downtown Reading is sure to be exciting and delicious.

HAMBURG

Does your mouth begin to water when you think of Hamburg, PA? It will once you attend the town’s Taste of Hamburg-er Festival. The tasty day puts the beef into competitions, family-friendly activities, and totally whacky, yet delicious hamburger creations. How whacky? New burger concoctions debut each year, so don your loosest jeans, attend the annual festival, and sample the newest recipes for yourself.

If you can’t make the event, there are plenty of things to do and wonderful eateries to enjoy throughout the year in this welcoming hometown. Plus, Hamburg’s proximity to the Appalachian foothills makes it a fun spot if you like spending time outdoors. Take time to discover the wonders of this truly charming slice of America.

WEST READING

A quick drive or walk across the Penn Street Bridge from Reading will land you smack dab on Penn Avenue in West Reading. Just that quickly, the street narrows, and the Main Street storefronts take on a small-town look. Charming, yes, but “The Avenue” is anything but provincial. The popular destination delivers entertainment in the form of fashionable boutiques, hip events, trendy eateries and brew pubs.

West Reading also offers visitors a vibrant and growing collection of paint and mosaic murals on buildings along Cherry Street, parallel to Penn Avenue. This modern-day Main Street’s ever-changing activities make it a fabulous place to explore year-round.

BOYERTOWN

Bears, bears – they’re everywhere! Seventy-five bears of all shapes, colors, and sizes roam the streets of Boyertown as a nod to the town’s artistic community. The enchanting creatures add to the charm of Boyertown’s Main Street, a delightful mix of galleries, restaurants, breweries, and shops.

Catch a glass-blowing demo at Taylor Backes, then lunch and craft beers at The Other Farm. As for dessert, there’s nothing better than ice cream or penny candies from The Peppermint Stick Candy Store.

The area’s attractions are top-notch too. Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, the General Carl Spaatz National USAAF Museum, and Colebrookdale Railroad beg to be explored. So, no lions or tigers, just lots of bears, and lots of fun things to do in Boyertown, oh my!
