Healthy Dining Choices EMBRACE THE LIGHTER SIDE OF DINING

W

ith Fiesta in our rearview mirrors and summer now fully in our sights, it’s time to embrace the lighter side of dining. It may surprise you to learn that many South Texas favorites serve cuisine that won’t undo all that hard work you’re putting in at the gym. I love Wildfish Seafood Grille. It’s a restaurant where everything is delicious and almost everything is healthy. It’s true. Choose anything from their beautiful oyster bar. Tartare Of Pacific Ahi Tuna with mango and citrus; the flavors are perfectly blended in this dish packed full of healthy fats (avocado), protein and iron. The Wildfish jumbo lump crab cake isn’t a big fried ball of cornmeal. It’s delicately sautéed and portioned to satisfy with-

out being too filling. Entrees are roasted, sautéed, broiled and seared. There are smart side selections as well including broccolini with lemon and garlic and sugar snap peas with portobellos. Paloma Blanca Mexican Cuisine, is a favorite of San Antonio diners who frequent the cozy Broadway location to sip margaritas on their patio near their peaceful fountain. Diners also enjoy the great taste of Mexico in the healthy selections on their extensive menu which is thoughtfully coded to show items that are lower in saturated fat, carbohydrates and sodium. They offer gluten free and vegetarian choices. And, they’ve teamed up with Mission Crossfit SA in the creation of a Paleo menu that includes beef taquitoes, fresh cooked fish and lean pork.

The Raw Deal Wrap

Diners choose Sumo San Antonio Steak House & Sushi Bar to marvel as skilled chef artists prepare heart-healthy meals. Teppanyaki, a Japanese table-side cooking technique, offers diners an opportunity to see exactly how their food is prepared and in some instances choose what ingredients they’d prefer. It’s an amazing and entertaining experience done well at Sumo. The Heart of Texas is light and delicious, spicy hot combination of chicken and shrimp. The sushi at Sumo is beautiful. A favorite, the Sunrise Roll, combines cucumber, crab, salmon and avocado. Omnivores know that Green Vegetarian Cuisine is a delicious and responsible choice. 100% kosher, Green serves healthy vegetarian and vegan comfort food that draws all types of diners including carnivores looking for a tasty way to eat clean. Check out their “Lighter Side” menu for a selection of gluten free bowls and salads. The heartiest choice, their protein salad, includes the following healthy hall of famers; carrots, tomatoes, kale, flaxseed, spinach, chick peas and quinoa with avocado

and roasted tofu. The Raw Deal Wrap is anything but, it’s a collard leaf stuffed with celery, bell peppers, tomatoes and sprouts with pecan hummus and cranberries. Thankfully, healthy dining doesn’t mean you have to exclude red meat. Lean cuts of quality beef provide an excellent source of protein. And if it’s quality you’re seeking, visit three of San Antonio’s finest steakhouses. Myron’s has been “proudly serving prime” since 2003. Their source, Chicago prime beef, is the top 2% of beef available in the US. Myron’s offers a number of healthy sides all fresh including spinach, broccoli and asparagus. The setting at Myron’s is intentionally romantic. It is a “go to” for milestone celebrations and special occasions for parties of two or large groups. A chic newcomer to the San Antonio dining community, J-Prime Steakhouse has successfully integrated South American flair into a traditional American steakhouse. Steaks at J-Prime are butchered in house and aged from 45-60 days and cooked at 1200 degrees over a custom grille. The

menu is imaginative. Their Brazilian flair comes through in a number of expertly prepared lighter selections including octopus ceviche and stuffed airline chicken breast. Located in The Vineyard Shopping Center off 1604, J-Prime is quickly becoming a hot spot for happy hour. Downtown San Antonio is alive and well with a number of elegant dining options. King among them is Bohanan’s, one of Texas’ top rated steakhouses. Akaushi beef has to be one of the reasons why. It is beef at its very best, humanely raised and hormone free. Any cut of pristinely marbled Akaushi beef is considered to be a healthy choice. When you combine the top notch menu with the unmatched service, you’ll understand why Bohanan’s is a San Antonio gem. Just across the street from the Majestic, Bohanan’s makes “dinner and a show” an evening to remember. Visit the bar at Bohanan’s on your cheat day. If you’re going to break your diet, do it over one of their exquisite cocktails. ■

ounded in 2009, Sanders Architecture is an Austin-based architecture firm that provides planning, design and architectural services for residential, commercial and institutional projects. Building harmony into every design, Sanders Architecture thoughtfully attends to the details of clients’ comfort, productivity and enjoyment through a highly collaborative approach. The firm’s honors include a 2014 AIA Austin Design Award and 2014 Green Dot Award for the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center admissions kiosk. As the firm’s founder and creative lead, Chris Sanders oversees the design process for all projects and closely attends to client relationships. His collaborative approach ensures direct contact with clients from initial meetings through the design and construction phases – a personal imperative for Chris that dates back to his master’s thesis, which revealed a strong correlation between user involvement in the design process and positive outcomes. Prior to founding Sanders Architecture, Chris served in project architect roles for Andersson Wise Architects in Austin, Texas; Ann Beha Architects in Boston, Massachu-

setts; and Baum, Freitag & Leesch in Weimar, Germany. Significant works completed include the award-winning Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Admissions Kiosk, Temple Ranch Pool Cabana, AWAY Spa at W Austin Hotel and Residences and Hawthorn Longfellow Library at Bowdoin College. As an Edward J. Romieniec Traveling Scholar, Chris traveled through South Asia, studying the colonial influence on local architecture and city planning. Chris earned his Master of Architecture degree from Texas A&M University, which included an internship at Leo A. Daly Architects in Washington, D.C. In 2003, Chris served as an intern for the U.S. National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (USICOMOS) at the Mediterranean Centre for Built Heritage in Split, Croatia. Chris grew up in Lufkin, Texas, in the heart of the Piney Woods. Time spent outdoors – camping, canoeing, hunting and fishing – is when he began to appreciate nature and to understand humankind's effect on the natural environment. Trying to reconcile his love of the land with his family’s roots in a natural-resource-based economy provided early lessons in sustainability. These experiences may explain why Chris considers Lady Bird Lake the defining feature of Austin’s urban landscape. Between training for marathons, walks with his family, attending music festivals, biking to and from the green belt and canoeing with his kids, he has formed a personal connection with the lake and associated parkland. ■

Aging in Place HONORING THE WISHES OF LOVED ONES // SPECIAL TO NHOME

46

/ NHOME MAY//JUNE 2015

AS WE GROW OLDER or have a loved one who is growing older, a question creeps into our minds. How can I stay in my own home? With nearly 90% of people over the age of 65 years old reporting that they would prefer remaining in their own home, aging in place has become a hot topic. Aging in place is defined as continuing to live in your home safely and as independently as possible as you age. There is truly great news for

MONKEYBUSINESSIMAGES/BIGSTOCK.COM

living independently

NOSNIBOR137/BIGSTOCK.COM, LISAFX/BIGSTOCK.COM

“ASKING FOR HELP IS NOT A SIGN OF WEAKNESS.” people who have this hope. There are a rapidly growing number of options to help you stay safe and independent in the home you cherish. From basic home modifications to emerging assistive technology, your home may actually serve to maintain independence by compensating for reduced functioning. Additionally, it should not be forgotten that a little help could go a long way. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a skill to ask for help. And it helps alleviate stress. Rehabilitation specialists, including physical and occupational therapists, can assess homes for safety and recommend equipment to support continued independence of activities that are performed daily (such as the use of a shower chair when bathing to accommodate for decreased balance). Therapists with a specialty in gerontology can assess and improve identified physical and environmental weaknesses. These same therapists can also sit beside someone who has a disease process associated with aging and explain what is going on, what is to come, and how to prepare emotionally and physically. It is worth the effort to ask for help and the expertise of licensed professionals to age in place. We aren’t just talking about staying at home. We are talking about carrying out vows to love our spouse during sickness/health. We are talking about children honoring their parent’s wishes to remain in the home. We are talking about changing the culture for the aging and walking them home with dignity and honor. ■

Art and Autism GrantsEco sharing his talent // BY: JENNIFER ALLEN

/ NHOME MAY//JUNE 2015

PHOTOS COURTESY OF GRANTSECO ART

H

e is one of the country’s most exciting emerging young artists with state and national accolades. Even more amazing, he’s done it all with a diagnosis that most would consider a disability, but he considers it an ability. In an often-misunderstood world of autism, Grant Manier (pronounced maun-yay), a special needs advocate and one of the most intriguing and captivating young Eco-impressionists of today, is an amazing example of how a complex disorder can grant some of the most amazing gifts; a combination of a window of imagination and an autistic mind that allows him to create stunning collage masterpieces using thousands of pieces of torn/cut shaped and textured paper from recycled calendars, magazines, posters, puzzles and more. He spends upward to 20 hours a week on his “eco-impressionist” pieces. From an owl made from movie posters to dolphins crafted with applesauce lids. Manier is breaking the mold and changing perceptions, whether an admirer or owner of an Eco-original or print, people love his art, his story, and what he stands for “Hope”. Grant Manier has been recognized by the United State Congress, Texas State Senate, Texas Governor, Mayor of Houston, and the Austin Rodeo as Grand Champion in the Eco-Art division, as well as many other honorable and deserved awards. Manier in just a few short years from the age of 15 created a business that started as a home school project, has now established himself as an awarding winning Eco-artist. By the age of 3, Manier showed an extreme fascination and passion for paper; writing, coloring, drawing and tearing. However, in the same breath, he was also exhibiting signs of extreme anxiety, social challenges, and obsessions (lining up toys, repetitive T.V. talk). By the age of 5, he was diagnosed with autism. He attended a private school for kids with autism until the age of 9. Attending public school, struggling academically, and being bullied (Grade 3-5), Manier’s anxieties overwhelmed him and his ability to focus on tasks were disappearing, even his love for art. Realizing that mainstream schooling was not working for Grant, his mother decided that homeschooling was the next best option. Once at home she encouraged his

strengths and insisted that he rediscover his love of art by adding it into the home school curriculum. Manier started to incorporate paper art as a coping technique for his anxieties. At the age of 14, Manier created his first eco-art masterpiece “The Sun God” shaped using over 4000 pieces of cut and torn recycled magazines, calendars, and craft paper onto canvas. The art piece at first glance appears to be a painting, but it is not. His mother was naïve to the art world, but knew a little something about business. After meeting with art appraisers and telling them Grant’s story she soon learned that what she would have otherwise sold for $100, is now insured for $7500. Manier is not your typical artist. He took a compulsive habit, ripping paper, and turned it into something magical. Collaging was an “old” but now “new” art movement thanks to eco-friendly times and Eco-artists, like Grant Manier. He sees a medium that can be brought to life through hours of work, intense focus abilities, and remarkable patience. He follows the same method for every art piece: a brush, recycle materials, tear, cut, glue, shade, glaze and repeat. The paper is expertly applied to canvas by the hands of a genius. “I never know how each one will turn out. I just keep going and see what happens, “stay-in-action” is just one of my mottos,” Grant says. He finds inspiration and ideas from nature, animals, academic subjects, friends, traveling, World Wide Web and his greatest inspiration is his mother. He has coined the term “Coolages” to define his art because he says he uses cool colors, cools shapes, cool textures. His art has brought him peace and purpose. “Art is my meditation,” he explains, “When my anxieties get the best of me and

“MANIER IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL ARTIST. HE TOOK A COMPULSIVE HABIT, RIPPING PAPER, AND TURNED IT INTO SOMETHING MAGICAL.”

I need to look for peace, all I have to do is come back to my art and I feel connected to something bigger.” Manier has a garage full of puzzles and it’s no coincidence that the puzzle piece is the symbol for autism. Recycled puzzles happen to be one of Grant’s greatest signatures marks. Grant not only recycles puzzles for his art, once he receives the box he proceeds to peel the print off of each puzzle piece, “I need the puzzle to be paper thin so I can apply it to the canvas easily, that’s why I need to peel the print off each piece,” Grant says. Manier is the only known puzzle artist to apply this painstaking puzzle process to his art. Although he teaches children and adults to recycle puzzle and create art, it takes a tremendous amount of patience and time to create the masterpieces that Manier does effortlessly. Manier travels, makes appearances, and raises money for schools, galas, conferences, and other great causes. Exhibiting and teaching the importance of recycling and protecting our planet. With his beautiful and breath taking Eco-Art masterpieces, Manier captures the attention of everyone around him and has created a following for his art. He has worked alongside with Dr. Temple Grandin, most well-known person with autism (HBO movie, Time Magazine “100 Most Influential People in the World”). Grant Manier, to some stands for “Hope” and for others a “New Era”. As an Eco-artist he’s protecting and teaching others to save the earth. As a person living with autism, he has become a voice for those you cannot hear by leading the way with his remarkable special talent and teaching the world, “It’s not what we can’t do... it’s what we can do that makes the difference” ■

Business Finance LAYING THE PROPER FOUNDATION // BY: COMFORT CHEVANNES

M

ost people understand that a building is nothing without a solid foundation. Why is the foundation of a building, like your home, the most important part of the structure? It’s because any issues with the foundation get worst as it begins to affect the other areas of the building. It's a compounding problem, it builds and can very well cause the home to eventually fall apart (literally). Think about it! Your home, yes, your home – all of it sits on top of the foundation. Likewise, in business if the foundation is not set up right, you can run into major issues that can last for years. Imagine loosing time and money, and then compounded on that is major debt following you for years. Not exactly the entrepreneurial dream. Using some of the construction procedures let’s examine what laying the proper foundation is like for self-employed business owners. The first step in the construction process is to get the needed permits from the city to build, and hiring a surveyor to determine the property boundaries and corners, so that the builder and architect will know where everything can or will be. In business, this is where the business owner ensures that the right business structure is cho-

52

/ NHOME MAY//JUNE 2015

sen and all licensing and permits needed to legally operate the business are obtained. But, even before that, the business owner should be sure that the business chosen is one that they actually want to do, because building a business requires putting in the needed time to get the work done. This is what we sometimes call working your business, and in the early stages working your business could mean doing research, enhancing your skills, getting to know your customers likes and dislikes better or even establishing business partners among other things. Let’s not forget the architect. The blueprint for the house must be designed properly and followed precisely by the builders. The blueprint is the design of the home, how everything will be laid out. In business, the blueprint is the business model, also referred to as the profit model. You can find out more about the business model in the book: SelfEmployed and profitable, and in the free download titled: The Effective Marketing Plan. Also in the early stages of the construction process is the site preparation, the crew uses a bulldozer and a backhoe to clear the land of any debris, unwanted trees and rocks. A builder cannot build on clutter and chaos; neither should a business owner ignore areas in their life that may impact their business or anti-business success behaviors that can leave them unprofitable and in debt. To help ensure that the proper foundation is laid, business owners should ensure that their business model makes sense according to their respective business type and industry practices. In addition, a lifestyle adjustment may be necessary to allow the

MONKEYBUSINESSIMAGES/BIGSTOCK.COM

finance

business owner to focus on the business development. Finances need to be in order; if there is no savings or there’s a shortage of cash to properly fund the early stages of the business, keeping a part time job may be necessary to have additional money in the business or maintain their livelihood. Bank Accounts, business insurance, and setting up your books properly so that you can keep track of your business finances should also be established early. If you can’t keep track of your business finances

full time to being self-employed full time. Working brings in a paycheck, whereas in business at times you live off what’s left in the business. If one really believes that self-employment is the way to go, then downsizing or scaling back on household expenses to ensure that they can make it through the earlier phase of their business may be necessary to avoid unwarranted financial stress. Personal finances is an area to consider deeply because you do not want to find yourself struggling to balance personal and business finances, or even regretting venturing off into business because of financial distress. To help you keep track of your personal finances use a household budget. When the construction crew is finished with the digging phase, the concrete is poured into the holes. This is to create a connection point between the foundation and the ground. It takes about four weeks for the concrete to dry depending on the weather. Once the concrete hardens it is now ready to support the bricks that will form the walls of the house. Similar in business, all the essential plans must be put in place to support the growth of the business. This means putting together, financial projections, your marketing plan, operating plans and business budget. You may ask “why aren’t these plans with designing the blueprint phase”. Good question, however, keep in mind that the blueprint is the Business Model. Once the business model has been determined, coming up with strategic plans to support the building of your business will be much easier to design. These plans, once they have been put into action will not only serve as a road map, but also as the supporting documents your business needs to help take it to the next level. ■

“TO HELP ENSURE THAT THE PROPER FOUNDATION IS LAID, BUSINESS OWNERS SHOULD ENSURE THAT THEIR BUSINESS MODEL MAKES SENSE ACCORDING TO THEIR RESPECTIVE BUSINESS TYPE AND INDUSTRY PRACTICES.” or you don’t know what’s happening in your business, then you are not really operating your business, and you will not be in a position to make well informed decisions. After the crew has cleared the site, they move on to digging deep into the ground creating trenches and holes where the concrete is to be poured. This ensures that the ground can support the house. Builders never just build from the ground level; they always dig down into the ground as far as needed depending on the soil type to ensure the foundation is laid properly to support the structure. Many business owners do not always think about how their personal finances may be impacted by their decision to start a business. Consider for a moment the person who transitions from being employed

n a business known for open houses, for sale signs, and finding the best deals for buyers and sellers, a group of San Antonio real estate agents came together last month to ensure women and children in the community have a safe place to call home – at least temporarily – when escaping domestic violence. Platinum Top 50 hosted its first annual San Antonio Fashion Show Fundraiser on April 9th. Proceeds from the event benefit Family Violence Prevention Services, a women and children’s center providing emergency shelter, transitional housing, and education services to eradicate domestic violence in the community. Based on the success of their annual event in Austin, Platinum Top 50’s Fashion Show Fundraiser – an organization honoring San Antonio real estate agents for not only their professional work but civic responsibility and involvement – raised over $8,000. Held at the beautiful Jack Guenther Pavilion at The Briscoe Western Art Museum, 32 real estate agents and affiliates moonlighted as models in front of a crowd of 350. The walked down the runway in spring and summer looks generously provided by local boutiques Penner’s Mens Store, Grove Hill, W by Worth, The Impeccable Pig, and Elaine Turner. Family Violence Prevention Services and four other deserving nonprofits in the community were selected as potential recipients of the proceeds based on the involvement of PT50 award recipients. The group then voted to determine which organization would be the beneficiary of this fundraising event. Platinum Top 50 and the Platinum Top 50 Awards Program annually recognizes 50 residential real estate agents in the San Antonio area for their outstanding achievements in sales, education, industry participation and civic leadership. A major component of the awards application focuses on community service and involvement. Often referred to as the most successful and wellrounded realtors, Platinum Top 50 Winners exemplify initiative, involvement, success, and philanthropy. ■

Hildebrand Corridor fulfilling Mr. McCombs’ forward thinking idea of an urban community and new gateway to the city. “The Broadway and the surrounding area is defining San Antonio in the same way Times Square defines New York. There’s simply no place like it,” said Red McCombs, Founder and Chairman of McCombs Enterprises. The Broadway Residences, the vision of Mr. McCombs, sparked invigorated interest in the area that is being called the new ‘Main Street’ of San Antonio. The Broadway/Hildebrand Corridor

also includes attractions such as the Botanical Gardens, Maverick Park and the newly opened San Antonio Children’s Museum a “Do Seum”. “What you are seeing is just the beginning of refocusing Downtown San Antonio and the pathway to it,” said Mr. McCombs. The Broadway, located at 4242 Broadway, was built on one of the bestknown corners in San Antonio where the iconic Earl Abel’s restaurant originally opened in 1940. “We were fortunate to purchase that property from the Earl Abel family, it was the only location we considered. We are proud to own this site and were very aware of the importance this corner holds in the city’s history. I feel The Broadway is a continuation of that proud heritage and brings a sense of community to the area,” said Mr. McCombs. As the demand for luxury condominiums and vertical living continues to rise, the residential project is now more than 50% sold out. Because of The Broadway’s limited inventory, buyers are moving quickly and San Antonio’s most coveted high-rise is selling out rapidly. This is a testament to Mr. McCombs vision. According to the Texas Association of Realtors, condominiums and townhomes were the fastest growing segment of the RED McCOMBS Texas housing market during the first half of 2014. The Broadway sits on 2.5 acres near the San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio Country Club and Witte Museum. The residential building offers a resort-style setting with on-site hotel-trained staff. Amenities such as a state-of-the-art fitness center, media room, pet park, conference room, and catering kitchen cover more than 140,000 square feet. The resort-style pool boasts covered cabanas and a climate-controlled pool with lounge. “The building itself is something you never tire of viewing. I built it to be a reference point that will be viable 100 years from now. It was built to withstand the test of time,” said Mr. McCombs. “The luxury and quality of the tower really placed a spotlight on a new way of living that I think will be important to other developers that we see coming into the area. There is nothing like The Broadway,” said Mr. McCombs, about The Broadway Residences: The Broadway, with unique views of San Antonio and up to 11,000 squarefeet of spacious living, has gone from one of the city’s best kept secrets to one of it’s most desirable communities. The interiors include floor-to-ceiling windows, open floor plans, gourmet kitchens, master suites and hardwood floors. Distinctive one, two and three-bedroom floor plans range from 1,262 square feet to a sprawling 11,000 square feet with the option to combine units for a customizable square footage and layout. Homes at The Broadway start in the $600’s and go up to more than $10 million. The project is a development of San Antonio-based McCombs Enterprises. ■

O

n March 31 the ASID San Antonio Design community held its 4th annual Business of Design Conference. It was a very successful event with over 65 ASID members attending. The event was held at the Art Institute of San Antonio. Interior Designers, who are ASID members and also those who are Registered Interior Designers by Texas Board of Architectural Examiners are required to take CEU’s to maintain their membership or their registration. Registered Interior Designers [RIDs] pay annual registration fees and take continuing education courses annually to comply with TBAE’s requirements for registration and the ability to call oneself a Registered Interior Designer in the State of Texas. To facilitate this need this year’s Business of Design conference offered 5 IDCEC approved CEU’S courses as well as lectures on business practices and procedures, how to market design services, and product specifications and information. These courses were presented by various ASID Industry Professionals. Presenters were from Hunter Douglas, Fiezy rugs; Bentley Carpets’; Schonbek Lighting; Fiberseal; UTSA business center; NCIDQ; Boss Creative; State of Texas department of Insurance. Interior Designers attending were from all parts of the state. The Art Institute Culinary School provided a gourmet lunch. And Industry Professional vendor product exhibit was also provided for the attending designers to view the vendor’s new products and services. All the evaluations from attendee’s were positive requesting that we repeat this event again next year. We want to thank all event sponsors and our IP’s who supported this event. In additional, a very big thank you goes to the Art Institute of San Antonio whose participation made this event possible. ■
