y favorite time of the year always seems to sneak up so quickly! Because we are all so much busier, times just appears to be moving quicker. I love the holidays because of the special magic in the air that suddenly seems to make everyone more cheerful; more forgiving and more giving. The holiday season is also a favorite time for many home owners and interior designers. They especially enjoy decorating their home to reflect their personality and to create an inviting ambience to their home and lifestyles. Our cover story showcases one home in four South Texas cities with hopes to give you ideas for this year and years to come! In our “What's Cooking” section, Tanji Patton an Emmy Award winning journalist and host of Goodtaste with Tanji shares some great recipes that we hope you will include in your holiday PROUD MEMBER OF: menu. And for Functional Designs, the SA ASID Pinnacle Award under the leadership of Donna Reed and her team was a great success. We showcase for you the great award winning designs of creativity and great talent. One certainly does not need to go far to find a great designer! We hope our community inspiration stories will encourage your business to include a plan to give back even more. Editor/Realtor, Kim Young has a great article on Deployment and the holidays. We hope that you keep in mind the best part of Christmas is not the presents you will give or receive. The best part is being in His presence and making a difference and making an impact for someone else. Don't forget to include your favorite charity in your giving. We are grateful to our advertisers and to our readers for your continued support as we celebrate our 3rd year anniversary. On behalf of the staff of NHOME, we want to say “thank you” for making these past three years a joy to serve you and bring you the best in home designs and ideas, real estate, green and luxury living. May the blessings and the magic in the air fill your home and business this season and always. Sincerely from NHOME to your home,
Adaku Okoro, publisher adaku@nhometx.com
LETTERS TO THE PUBLISHER At NHOME magazine, we are proud to share some positive feedback contributed by some of our valued readers and friends.
Hello, Adaku. I really enjoy your new magazine, NHOME. It is very well done and fills a needed space in San Antonio’s magazine scene. I enjoy everything from the articles and stories, to the layout, to the photography, to the ads. Most recently, I was fascinated by the article, Heart and Soul, featuring Mayor Ivy Taylor and her husband, Rodney Taylor’s, renovated home in Dignowity Hill on San Antonio’s East Side. It is great to see how history can be remembered and revived over the years through one's home. As a friend of the Taylor’s, I have seen how the house has transformed from when they first purchased the home to its look and feel today. It is truly a “labor of love,” and the article so beautifully captures the essence of the Taylor’s love of history, restoration, and the East Side. Kim Young’s quote from Le Corbusier sums it all – “The home should be the treasure chest of living.” Thank you for this wonderful story and publication. I look forward to your next editions! Thanks, Art A. Hall

Bon Appétit SENOR VEGGIE’S FAVORITE HOLIDAY CUISINE // BY: RITA ZENZEN HECK
BORN AND RAISED on San Antonio’s south side, Jose Cruz thought he wanted to be an artist when he graduated from high school and enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago, but he wasn’t fulfilled. Then he heard about the New England Culinary Institute in Burlington, Vermont, a classically French school. “I took French in high school ... so I thought why not,” he said. “The experience taught me that there was art in creating food and it was much more satisfying.” Cruz specialized in the art of the saucier. His sauces and delicately sautéed items turned ordinary dishes into French treasures. After seventeen years of cooking at various restaurants across the country, Jose returned to San Antonio and turned his expertise toward creating plant-based dishes that would appeal to everyone. His and wife Tiffany’s first venture was a food truck and catering service which expanded into Senor Veggie which he opened this summer on South Presa street ... “my old neighborhood,” he smiled. Doing all the work themselves, the couple transformed a ho-hum spot into a trendy comfortable haven for veggies featuring local artists’ works and a landscaped patio for people watching. Tiffany focused her artistic talent as an art history major into creating work-of-art pastries which taste even better than they look. For holidays and special occasions, Chef Cruz created a series of plant-based recipes that would be a hit on any table. ■

Reduce heat to medium/low and simmer, uncovered, for at least 40-45 minutes. Stir frequently & add touch of water if needed. The goal is to over-cook the lentils slightly. Mash lentils slightly with a spoon when ready. Toast walnuts at 325F for about 8-10 minutes. Set aside. Increase oven temp to 350F. Whisk ground flax with water in a small bowl and set aside. Heat a teaspoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sautee the garlic and onion for about 5 minutes. Season with salt. Now add in the diced celery, shredded carrot and apple, and raisins. Sautee for about 5 minutes more. Remove from heat. In a large mixing bowl, mix all ingredients together. Adjust seasonings to taste. Grease a loaf pan and line with parchment paper. Press mixture firmly into pan. Whisk glaze ingredients and then spread half on top of loaf. Reserve the rest for a dipping sauce. Bake at 350F for 40-50 minutes, uncovered. Miles to Go Before We Eat TAKING IT TO THE STREET LOOKING FOR DELICIOUS TEXAS HOLIDAY FOODS // BY: ANGELA CLACK

ou’ve heard the song and know that there are miles and miles of Texas. You can go anywhere in the Lone Star State and find delicious eats. There’s no shortage of great choices beyond the traditional fare that Texas is known for. Yes, we have the country’s best barbecue. We’re also the “go to” for chicken fried steak. Texans and visitors alike enjoy a full range of comfort foods in our quaint small towns. We’ve also got a myriad of choices for cutting edge cuisine in our major cities. Here are some favorites.

One of the wisest ways to find a good restaurant is to simply tell a friend where you’re going. So, I asked a co-worker, Marlene, where to eat in Austin. One of her recommendations, Odd Duck, features small plates and a communal seating arrangement, a dining phenomena sweeping through Austin. I was initially skeptical, however, Odd Duck has perfected small plates with their ever changing menu of well-prepared dishes. I had been warned to “get at least four plates for yourself.” It is guidance that I should have taken to heart. Every dish I was forced to share with my husband was exquisite, including pork cracklings atop a black bean and pickled pepper concoction, a chorizo flatbread, pancetta taco and tempura sweet potato. The server introduced each dish which was at first delightful but then eventually became a painful exercise in patience as we waited for the presentation to end so that we could savor the tiny plates. A later visit to Austin landed us at the Domain, one of Austin's premier shopping destinations. It is also a marvelous place to dine. Chef Kent Rathbun’s Jasper’s Gourmet Backyard Cuisine offers a distinct departure from Austin’s small plates. The hearty, expertly prepared cuisine is gourmet comfort. We tried their signature slow-smoked baby back ribs and warm potato salad, wood grilled tenderloin filet and Ahi with fried rice and bok choy and a bacon cheese burger. It wasn’t your basic burger. Jasper’s serves a tenderloin/ brisket bacon burger with shiner bock braised onions. I subbed in sharp cheddar at on the advice of the server. Superb. Another Domain favorite next door to Jasper’s, North Italia features scratchmade pasta and pizza. Their can’t miss menu includes a fig and prosciutto pizza topped with goat cheese and arugula, seared diver scallops with risotto and a spicy shrimp with mafaldine pasta. North’s interior is stunning, but choose the patio which is situated next to the Domain’s courtyard which often features live music. If you’re fond of Latin cuisine, make a reservation at Gloria’s Latin Cuisine, another beautifully appointed Domain destination. The ceviche trio is a treat featuring orange roughy ceviche, shrimp cocktail and scallop ceviche. One taste confirms their commitment to using the freshest ingredients and preparing everything from scratch. Gloria’s also serves delightful cocktails including

AUSTIN
a variety of margaritas, mojitos and a beautiful sangria. And, in case you’re torn between a sangria and a margarita, ask for The Swirl and enjoy the best of both beverages. Include Copper Restaurant and Desert Lounge in your Domain visit. I stopped in to try the Candy Girl, a champagne based cocktail, with cotton candy infused vodka. It is one of a number of beautiful craft cocktails to enjoy during their extensive happy hour. They are one of a few restaurants that has a happy hour every day. DALLAS A shopper’s paradise, Dallas is also a top city for lovers of the arts, sports and dining. Truluck’s is a seafood, steak and crab house. It’s signature offering is stone crab harvested responsibly from their own fisheries. Expect the server to say “I feel sorry for you” when you admit you’ve never visited Truluck’s. The unobtrusive exterior gives way to a elegant interior where the stone crab is king. It’s delicious and so are their seafood platters. The fried shrimp is prepared old school with a cornmeal based breading. Finish with their traditional key lime pie. Don’t expect to get a traditional slab at Smoke. Instead, look for down home with a gourmet twist. Smoke is renowned for meat including coffee cured brisket. My favorite is reminiscent of that rib that tipped over Fred Flintstone’s car. The Big Rib is enormous, served atop a flavorful hominy casserole. Fork tender, this hunk of beef is an enjoyable challenge. Expect to leave with a bag in hand. Ask any hotel concierge for the best in Asian cuisine and you’re likely to hear the name Howard Wang. There are three locations in Dallas including the uptown location on Lemmon Avenue. The extensive dinner menu includes marvelously prepared dishes. Top choices include the crispy sesame tofu, NOVEMBER//DECEMBERR 2014 NHOME /

HOUSTON Don’t visit Houston without stopping at Ouisie's Table. The creation of Elouise Adams Jones, Ouisie's (pronounced “Wee . . Zees”) menus are meticulously curated to include an array of American and ethnic dishes. I stopped in with my family for breakfast and enjoyed the eggs benedict, rice and pistachio bread pudding, French toast with caramelized bananas and cinnamon, and egg white and caramelized onion tacos. My only regret was that I could not also dine there for lunch. Houston’s impressive museum district is home to Danton’s Gulf Coast Seafood Kitchen. Oysters Kyle is a favorite appetizer featuring garlic, lemon butter and bread for sopping. Their Gulf Coast selections are grilled over oak and hickory or fried in peanut oil. Classic southern sides include onion rings, dirty rice, red beans and rice and okra and tomatoes. The “can't miss” at Danton’s is their white chocolate bread pudding, a soupy bowl of sweet brioche that’s worth the trip all on its own. Bite Macarons covers everything I value in a fine cuisine, authenticity, quality and a visually appealing product and location. The chic shop is modern with clean minimalist decor that allows the sweet offerings in the display case to take center stage. The meticulously hand-crafted macarons come in a number of unique flavors including Earl Grey, Honey Lavender and Coffee.

and signature dishes peppercorn spiced soft shell crab and ginger beef tenderloin. Look for ssahmBBQ gourmet Korean tacos, a top food truck in Dallas’ trendy Arts District. As their slogan suggests, diners can “Come get ssahm” from this favorite that fuses Latin and Korean in a variety of reasonably priced meals. Surprises include Kimchee fries and the SsahmDawg. Diners choose their meat, beef, pork or chicken(tofu is also available) to create tasty tacos, burritos and quesadillas.
Although it is one of America’s largest cities, San Antonio has a small town charm. SA is engaged in an ongoing debate about where to get the best burger. One establishment that is often at the top of the local’s list is Chester’s Hamburger Company. Regulars love the poppy seed buns. When you visit, add the green chilis to your burger to make it messy and take it over the top. There’s great beer and home fries in an inviting very casual atmosphere. Tourists and locals alike visit Paesano’s for excellent Mediterranean cuisine. If you’ve never visited, you’ve got to order their most famous dish, Shrimp Paesano. It’s so great, you’ll be tempted to order it on every visit, but don’t. Their extensive menu, which varies slightly among the three location, includes great pasta and everything from ceviche to massive imaginative salads and a favorite of mine, the smoked salmon pizza with red onion, capers and lemon vodka crème, available at their 1604 location. Some of the most beautifully presented cuisine in SA is available at Silo. They don’t have an extensive menu and they don’t need one. There’s enough variety on the menu and perfection in the preparation to ensure you won’t be disappointed. I don’t visit without enjoying the chicken fried oysters. Entrees include tenderloin, red fish, salmon and a five spice duck. A favorite cocktail, the Champ-Berry Martini includes drunken berries. According to a server, the blackberries and raspberries are marinated in rum and Grand Marnier for seven days before being served with champagne. Both locations are elegant yet comfortable. With culinary selections like these, foodies needn’t go far to eat well. Enjoy all that Texas has to offer. ■

Tastes and Smells FORGOTTEN MEMORIES OF HOLIDAY FLAVORS // BY: GOOD TASTE WITH TANJI
F
unny how a flavor or an aroma can bring back long forgotten memories, even emotions. Something as simple as the smell of bread baking can make you feel all warm and toasty inside – instant comfort. I recently discovered a decades old cookbook that belonged to my mother-in-law. Helen and her three sisters never let a major holiday go by without huge fanfare. Every side dish imaginable, a garlic and jalapeno stuffed ham, perfectly browned turkey and multiple desserts were the norm. Take-out was not allowed. As I flipped through the old pages and the loose, faded pieces of newspaper that filled its covers, I was overcome with emotion. So much love, joy and even heartache was often shared at those giant holiday tables over the years. So, this Thanksgiving I wanted to pay tribute to Helen and mothers and grandmothers everywhere who truly are the glue that keeps our families and extended families connected. You’ve warmed our hearts and enriched our lives in ways we’ll never be able to fully grasp. I’ve put together a few of those holiday recipes here – the family favorites I’ll never forget. Up first is a delicious squash casserole, a dish you don’t often see anymore. I’ll wager this will be your favorite

holiday side – it’s one of mine. Two types of squash, chopped sweet yellow onion, and grated cheddar cheese carry the load in this hearty holiday casserole that plays like a soufflé. Another popular side - Bourbon & Pecan Yams (sweet potatoes). Yams or sweet potatoes, peeled then cubed, toasted Texas pecans and bourbon (of your choice) make this dish sing! And dessert fans, it wasn’t the pumpkin pie that stood out on Thanksgiving for us, it was Helen’s Lemon Meringue Pie made with the most delicious of all products ever produced – Eagle Brand’s Sweetened Condensed Milk. This recipe is over 50 years old! I’m told it actually passed down from my mother-in-law’s mother. BOERNE, TX Inspiration is often pulled from art, music, and even nature. However, this one of a kind home needed none of these elements. This stunning, contemporary 7,500 sq. ft., Hill Country estate, hosts an incredible amount of “larger than life” features. Bold windows make a perfect place to hang tastefully designed wreaths. A floor to ceiling, snow dusted Christmas tree, dressed with over 200 ornaments, draws your attention to the center of the formal living room. The white baby grand piano, dazzling Z Gallery chandelier and porcelain white furniture give the room a true “White Christmas” ambiance. Cool hues of blue, silver and white are the perfect palette to convey the beauty of the architecture and the season. Inspired by the grand scale, interior designer Nichelle Hosley, owner of n2 Spaces Interior Design, with the assistance of San Antonio’s Luxury Real Estate agent, Ian Wiley transformed this home for the holidays. Wiley said, “There is no home in San Antonio like this, it’s truly the perfect canvas for a designer and a great showcase property.

FREDERICKSBURG, TX Not far off the beaten path just outside of Fredericksburg, Texas you’ll find Susan and Dennis Kusenberger’s hill country retreat. Nestled on 8 acres of manicured property, close to the Pedernales River, the owners of RE/MAX Town and Country have created their own tranquil oasis with the help of designers, twins, John and Don Mooring of The Christmas Store. The traditional Texas stone home was remodeled last year with a surprisingly uptown interior of warm gray walls and ceilings along with subtle rugs and furnishing--nothing stands out but everything shines. For the holiday season Susan and Dennis wanted to decorate their new home in a modern yet elegant style to coordinate with their new furnishings. Working with the twins, the team put together a sparkling and unique group of decorations that are whimsical yet stylish. As John and Don worked their magic arranging garlands, wreaths, trees and florals, Susan laid out beautiful place settings for her guests, and included gorgeous cookies, cakes and flower arrangements, all in shades of white. The combination of beautiful furniture and elegant decorations make this home a relaxing paradise that will be inviting to all who enter for the holiday parties ahead.

SAN ANTONIO, TX A TRADITIONAL SAN ANTONIO HOME Santa Claus will not be disappointed when he comes down the chimney in this elegant and inviting home in the Woods of Sonterra. The nutcracker stoically welcomes guests at the front door. As they enter they can’t help but notice the timeless collection of Christmas ornaments and holiday accessories. The arrangements in each room are so striking that visions of one’s childhood past are emotionally recalled. The owners of the home have been collecting traditional Christmas décor for years from The Home Accessory Company and elaborate nativity scenes invoke feelings of reverence. Each room is tastefully decorated with classical trees, unique ornaments, and custom wreaths design by Aguie Medrano and his team of designers. After his cookies and milk, Santa will be sure to take a break in the cigar room and enjoy the warm, masculine décor. As Santa turns to depart up the chimney, he can't help but take one last look to relish the memory of this impressively decorated local San Antonio home.

Three Generations Go Vertical
A
lthough the span of reasons residents choose a luxury high rise is wide, a common theme among them is the desire to simplify their lives. Tripp and Chaney Stuart were looking for more family time and less housework when they moved to The Broadway in July 2013. After living in several large homes in San Antonio for fifteen years, the Stuarts decided it was time for a change. The family moved to The Broadway with a 13-year-old son, 10-year-old daughter and puppy in tow and have never looked back. To accommodate the family, the Stuart’s transformed two, 2-bedroom units into a stunning contemporary, yet comfortable 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom single family home. The high-rise lifestyle provided the comfortable luxury the Stuarts were used to without the hassle of consistent and time consuming upkeep. Without the maintenance of a large home, the Stuarts found more time to enjoy their family. When remodeling their new home, Chaney & Tripp focused on family-friendly spaces. The kitchen and family room, in particular, have become gathering places for entertaining. The home has a distinctive Chinoiserie flair, and incorporates heirlooms to provide a sense of balance. The family room is comfortable with tartan and leather, and is accented by Tripp’s grandparents’ large antique oriental “Kerman” carpet, which was previously owned by Jack Dempsey. The kitchen was designed as a focal point, and features large white Callacatta marble slabs on the countertops and backsplash to echo their marble topped antique pieces and compliment the walnut cabinetry. When the Stuarts aren’t enjoying their home in the sky, you can find them pursuing hobbies on or near The Broadway grounds. The children love the climate controlled swimming pool, and so do their friends who frequently come to visit. The family cooks out often using The Broadway’s gas grills, and the whole family loves the fitness center. The Stuarts no longer have to worry about home maintenance or yard work, and as a result have more time to spend together. “It’s funny, we cook out by the pool far more than we ever barbecued in our previous home, likely because we have more time to do the things

AFTER we enjoy,” Tripp says. “Everything about The Broadway makes life easier. From the valet and concierge, to 24 hour controlled access, it really is a turnkey operation.” Not only does the immediate family find more time to spend together, but the children now see more of their grandfather as well. After losing his wife, Tripp’s father moved from Dallas to San Antonio to be closer to his family and now lives just a few floors away. The family has dinners together regularly and the children often escape to his condo when they need a getaway. Mr. Stuart senior particularly enjoys having three golf courses less than five minutes away. The Stuarts have three different generations of family living in one building, and each loves life at The Broadway as much as the other. The Broadway Residences offer every luxury of domesticity in a low-maintenance, resort-style setting. Located at 4242 Broadway, the high-rise sits on 2.5 acres at the gateway to the city near the San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio Country Club and Witte Museum. The completely residential project has more than 140,000 square feet of amenities including a state-of-the-art fitness center with yoga studio, media room, pet park, conference room, catering kitchen and on-site hotel-trained staff. The resort-style pool boasts

With unique views of San Antonio and up to 5,830-square-feet of spacious living, The Broadway has gone from one of the city’s best-kept secrets to one of it’s most desirable communities. Historical Treasures GOING GREEN // BY: RITA ZENZEN HECK
H
istory is being repeated in neighborhoods across San Antonio. Historical District homes, once deteriorating eyesores, are evolving into sought after historical treasures. Lavaca and King William, downtown San Antonio's first neighborhoods, are alive with construction clatter and historical home revivals and upgrades. Smart architects and designers are buying up old neglected properties, waving their creative wands, bringing back the original early 1900s look...and adding green. Design/builder Efrain Varga, a California transplant, is one of several architects injecting their green expertise into Lavaca and King William revival turning neglected structures into attractive sustainable living homes while maintaining their historical integrity. Among Varga's projects is a pair of homes located at 205 and 209 Carolina Street which showcase his talents.
42
/ NHOME NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2014
“These homes had been neglected for years and it was challenging to restore their original 1910 exteriors yet add today's modern conveniences and green features,” Varga commented. “Fortunately I was able to save all of the original windows, decorative wood screens, fireplace chimney and a beautiful stained glass window at the 209 property,” Varga said. Revamping the original 209 Caroline home's 1650 square feet of living area, Vargo opened up the interior space into a kitchen, dining and living room. Both homes have energy saving lighting, 15 seer heat pumps, gas tankless water heaters, Energy Star appliances and upgraded insulation. “We also reinforced the pier and beam structures and reused much of the original building materials reducing landfill waste,” Varga said. “Preserving porches, saving trees and enhancing outdoor spaces is also important for older homes in keeping with the traditional neighborhood,” he added. All of Varga's historical retros have been recognized by Build SA Green and he is currently planning 28 town homes in the King William neighborhood to be completed in late 2015.
REPEATING HISTORY Jeff and Kelly Martinez fell in love with the character and charm of the Olmos Park neighborhood a few years ago and purchased an 88 year old fixer-upper but soon realized that rehab was impossible. “There were too many problems to overcome and the only solution was to start from scratch. That meant demolishing the original structure and reproducing it exactly to reinforce its historical integrity in the neighborhood,” Kelly Martinez explained. Turning the project over to BuiltSmart Resources, a source for education and implementation of sustainable building materials and practices, the Martinez's commissioned them to reproduce the original 3100 square foot structure but increase the size to 4500 square feet to better accommodate their family. “We just love the Olmos Park neighborhood and felt it important to reproduce

our original 1920s house as closely as possible to honor its character,” Kelly said. “We were able to keep the trees, reuse a lot of the materials and match those that were missing to complete the project,” she added. Situated on a half acre the two story home had plenty of space to expand without interfering with its natural setting. BuiltSmart was able to save one-third of the original Ludowici clay tiles and CONTACTS match them on floors, staircase and other areas. Made in Santa Barbara California, the tiles are composed Efrain Vargo of local and natural materials using a technique that Collaborative Homes creates no waste and are 100% recyclable. LED and CREE-LED lighting have motion controlled sensors with dimmers and moisture sensing ventilation fans add to energy savings and efficiency. A complete thermal envelope was achieved using spray foam insulation in walls and under roof adding to energy efficiency. “Although we reproduced the original look, we wanted to add something to make it distinctive. We drove through the neighborhood and discovered that many of the homes had decorative entry door surrounds so we took pictures and found one that complemented our home and fit in the neighborhood,” Kelly explained. “With a forty foot setback, we are surrounded by nature yet have the advantages of city living. We couldn't be happier with our new old home,” she said with a smile.
HISTORICAL HOME ENERGY RETROFITS PAYOFF A research study on energy retrofits for historic homes in San Antonio was recently conducted by the Center for Cultural Sustainability UTSA College of Architecture to help homeowners prioritize cost-effective improvements that will lower energy usage and bills. “Our team selected homes in various sections of San Antonio to study over a period of time to determine which retrofits could add more to the home's energy efficiency,” explained Hazem Rashed-Ali, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at UTSA. The statistics apply to 1700 square foot one-story detached frame construction on piers built ca. 1910 in hot-humid climate zoned historic districts protected by local ordinances. For the compete survey pamphlet: Energy Retrofits for Historic Homes in Hot Humid Climates Making everything old (homes) new again seems to be a growing trend in San Antonio these days in keeping with the city's outstanding historical reputation. ■

Bringing Christmas Home FROM AROUND THE WORLD // BY: RITA ZENZEN HECK

Left to right: All eight of Santa’s reindeer are gathered on and around the fireplace in the VanCleave living room with name tags made by Virginia’s mother. Two silverplated reindeer are from Thailand, the other six are from Korea and Hong Kong. From Shanghai to Mexico, more than three hundred nativities from around the world are displayed in Virginia and Albert VanCleave’s library. Angels from many countries float throughout the house during the VanCleave’s Christmas extravaganza.

ecycling and reuse are components of Green Living and Virginia and Albert VanCleave are champions of the cause. In 1983, the couple designed and built their unusual home in Stevenwood, a convenient San Antonio neighborhood off I-10 near the medical center that welcomed their creative building approach. “We wanted a house with lots of rooms to entertain on the first level and a dramatic balcony surrounding the second floor to overlook the space below, a special treat during the holidays when every room has its own Christmas theme.” Virginia explained. The VanCleave's extravagant Christmas decorating began the first year they were in the house which put it on the San Antonio Garden Center Christmas Pilgrimage in 1984 and the University United Methodist Christmas Home Tour. Over the past 31 years, the VanCleaves have shared their Christmas spirit with dozens of San Antonio non-profits including senior citizens from the Commander's House and St. Mathews Senior Center. “As president of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas in 2001- 2003, I invited all 6500 members to the house during one week in December with members coming from all over the state.” Virginia recalled. Avid travelers, the VanCleaves always bring Christmas decorations back from their trips. “I have visited more than 90 countries over the years so every decoration brings

back memories which are gathered together on our eight foot Travel Tree in the living room with ornaments from all over the world. We recently returned from Nepal (a repeat destination) and brought back more decorations. There is also a small Henry VIII tree there with Henry and each of his wives ornaments purchased at the Tower of London. “The great room has a Russian tree featuring Russian ornaments and costumed dolls from various regions of the country. A large Children's tree is in the family room and a nine foot Mexican tree is in the sun room. The dining room has an Angel tree similar to one I saw at New York's Metropolitan Museum with several of my favorite nativities underneath.” “A six foot purple Mardi Gras tree is in the exercise room with all decorations collected while watching the parade in New Orleans. A small Gingerbread tree stands in the kitchen with Gingerbread cookies originally purchased in London. A small Alamo tree is in the breakfast room with Alamo related decorations. The guest bedroom has a small Birds Nest tree and two of the downstairs bathrooms have small trees, one made of shells and the other with handmade beaded birds.” Holiday decorating usually begins at the VanCleave house in October, “Last year I started in September because we were in India in October,” Virginia noted.
“THE GREAT ROOM HAS A RUSSIAN TREE FEATURING RUSSIAN ORNAMENTS AND COSTUMED DOLLS FROM VARIOUS REGIONS OF THE COUNTRY.”
From Russia with love, this tree features ornaments all made in that country and sits atop another fireplace in the VanCleave home.
“We're finished before Thanksgiving and we take everything down mid-January. It takes six weeks to set up the decorations and about five days to dismantle them,” she added. More than 300 nativities have been gathered from around the world and are displayed in the library throughout the year. One nativity was made from a cinnamon tree trunk in Singapore. Another is in an igloo from Alaska. Others come from Bolivia, Venezuela, one has all dog figures and a tiny glass set from the Hanoi Hilton. “I love nativity scenes. We have one in a mushroom, one in a Bedoouin tent from Dubai, and a metallic paper one in the shape of a church in Kracow with a nativity in the window. The one from Brazil is
made from minerals and precious stones,” Virginia recalls. Virginia VanCleave, a retired UTSA history teacher, has been inducted into the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame, Who's Who Among America's Best Teachers, and was appointed an Admiral in the Texas Navy among many other recognitions. Virginia and Albert, a real estate attorney, agreed when they met in college that they would spend a lot of their time traveling and getting ready for Christmas... and they certainly have lived up to that vow. ■

“ONE-OFFS”, a solo exhibition by Houston artist, Ed Wilson at Fl!ght Gallery is an eclectic mix of casted metal and metal fabrications spanning over 20 years. Gallery owners, Justin Parr and Ed Saavedra grant opportunity to give voice to Ed’s political views, but sprinkle the exhibition and offset our experience with very formal and personal testimonials to a lifetime dedicated to craft, technique and artisan integrity. I first met Ed Wilson in the spring of 2001. Tex Kerschen and I, former curators at the ArtCar Museum in Houston were curating a collection of artwork about clandestine wars, armies, and operations throughout the world; focusing on CIA operatives, third world conflicts and national governmental inappropriateness. This exhibition titled “Secret Wars” brought international attention to the museum and to the artworks of Ed Wilson and many others via an unannounced FBI field investigation into underlying “UnAmerican activities”. Wilson’s work at that time touched on the political aspects of Middle East conflicts, deforestation, and general anti-war sentimentality. So, naturally when I heard Fl!ght Gallery in San Antonio was going to host a solo exhibition of Ed’s work in October 2014, I knew I had to catch up with the artist and see how he has progressed in the past 13 years. Upon entry into the gallery, one is met by a free standing metal casted shop broom on one side and a pair of metal casted artist work boots on the other. Immediately these very personal attributes usher in a sentiment of ‘welcome to my house’ and the layman cynicism of ‘walk a mile in my shoes’.
“THERE IS A JUXTAPOSITION OF INNOCENT VS. CONSEQUENTIAL VIOLENCE.” These juxtapose of material to object – (the weight of the metal vs. the airiness of a broom bristle) is repeated several times as Ed investigates various properties of his chosen medium and his visual representation of choice subject matter. Several large sculptures draw focus into the epicenter of the gallery; quasi-monumental constructions that suck you in like “Twister”, an almost 7 ft. vortex of 256 ft. of winded metal stripping acting as a whirling tornado, spinning the viewer around and around into the gun metal grey world of Ed Wilson. Left of center sits an 8 ft. Native American arrowhead titled, “The stone age did not end from lack of stone”. Stitched together with rectangular metal constructs, mimicking the leather adornments or tee pee skin sheathings used by a culture long exterminated, Ed relishes in a dichotomy that demands exploration across various con-

notations and conceptual deceptions. After passing the initial pieces we are greeted by a large manipulated photograph mounted to the gallery wall showcasing a portion of tools, artisan needs, and fabrication/ production utensils found in his studio. The utilitarian layout illustrates his passion with evidence of worn grips, weathered handles, and various other indications of routine use; solidifying artist paid dues in decades of craft. The key to the success of this exhibition lies in the story told by visual cues - personal or political. “The Price of Oil”, a larger-than-life wall mounted metal gas pump dispenses blood drops not gasoline, a leftist view of blood for oil, and a personal artist distaste for the U.S. involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and Egypt. However, although overtly political one can step outside of the taboo realm of this piece and appreciate the care and craftsmanship put into it as a final product. On the opposite wall, a formal architectural rendition of a typical house made of metal and inlaid with various mixed media prints showcases his love for materials while toying with metaphors of a person’s life cycle. Moveable and playful, yet anchored only by their metal weight, are two smaller castings that give a thought to innocence versus destruction, war, and ‘carnage’. “Child’s Play” a casted metal children’s tricycle is outfitted with a modified WWII Japanese infantry rifle as a gun turret. “I had two nephews that were involved in gun deaths”, said Wilson, giving context to an already disturbing contraption. “There is a juxtaposition of innocent vs. consequential violence”, he added. Conceptually, he alludes to the history of the gun, the possibility of its own history of death, war, and role in World War II. Minus the cherry red paint, the tricycle is rideable and brings up a childhood nostalgia that weaves in furies of child on child crime; inner city shootings to African children armies. A casted turtle shell mounted on small tank treads creates a rolling catastrophe of epic proportions masked in a tiny package. Protection of wildlife, pro animal rights, fighting against animal
“I HAD TWO NEPHEWS WHO WERE INVOLVED IN GUN DEATHS.” extinctions and man’s roll in the destruction of the natural world all swirl into a sculpture that is visually as mixed up as its intended meaning; a one off combine that was happened by chance. Small wall hanging metal relief architectural sculptures that look like a basic house structure, are a simple role reversal with intermittent material/media examinations. Instead of addressing the role of log cabin logs for the exterior supports of a cabin, Wilson puts them inside the house. Stucco, brick and wood are hung together in a 3 piece children’s story; a seemingly easy reference to a contemporary flair on the “Three Little Pigs” or Handy Andy meets Ed Wilson. The signature sculpture for the exhibition is a piece that is purposefully alone on a wall in the side hallway. A metal casted UZI titled, “Carnage” is complete with serial numbers and in an air of general authentication shoots a single bullet; its tracer scribing the word ‘carnage’ in cursive across the space adjacent to the gun. The unabashed bullet is heading toward any oblivious gallery attendant as they walk through the exhibition. A summary of random violence, gun crimes, and the destruction, killing and slaughter associated with war. As a distinguished artist and acclaimed craftsman, Wilson makes objects that demand attention, respect and investigation; a sheer reflection of the artist and his aged demeanor. Highly collected, Wilson’s art, although confrontational in some aspects, can be a great asset to any collection. He gives unique voice to a wide variety of cause while maintaining a strict professional aesthetic reflective of his foundry techniques, relentless craftsmanship and a utilitarian dexterity. ■

Impact San Antonio MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT HOME // BY: JEANNE ALBRECHT
Last October, these reasons came to life when Impact San Antonio members awarded a $100,000 grant to each of these three agencies: • Blueprint Ministries – Their grant will be used to provide 50 inner city homeowners a restored house that offers them safer, warmer living conditions. Restorative work will be done by volunteer teenagers and adults and may include replacing or repairing the roof, interior walls, ceilings, floors, siding, porches, bathroom and kitchen renovations.
“IMPACT SA
ALLOWS ME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A MEANINGFUL WAY WITHOUT
REQUIRING ME TO CONTRIBUTE ADDITIONAL HOURS I DO NOT HAVE.”

D
o you know why women join Impact San Antonio? The number one answer is because 100% of their annual $1,000 donation goes to non-profit agencies that benefit San Antonio and the people who live here. Close behind are these reasons: “There are no other obligations to be a member … Impact SA allows me to make a difference in a meaningful way without requiring me to contribute additional hours I do not have.” “It is a fun group to be around and I feel an infinity with the other professional, spirited women.” “I have an equal say with every other member.” “Our process of choosing the $100,000 grants is thorough and intelligent, but always with a base of care.” “The fantastic projects we fund show the power of women, combining our donations to have a real impact.”
/ NHOME NOVEMBER//DECEMBER 2014
• Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio – The proposed project will move the teens they serve from an unattractive, cramped and debilitated leased space to a new building on its Calderón Branch campus. The building will be specifically designed for teens, to include a Learning Center/Tech Lab, lounge and open space for programs, games and activities, and allow teens access to Calderón’s gym, pool, and outdoor courts – an important draw. • Roy Maas’ Youth Alternatives – Their grant will purchase desperately needed heating and air conditioning units at the San Antonio campus. Without these additions, the Emergency Shelter and Counseling Center are unbearably hot in the summer and very cold on winter days. The contribution will provide a more comfortable environment for children struggling to heal from the trauma of abuse and neglect. The two finalists – Friends of Government Canyon and Playhouse San Antonio – received $19,000 each. Would you like to give hundreds of thousands of dollars to make a difference in people’s lives? Do you have a passion for helping people in need, and want a way to do it graciously and effectively? If yes, join Impact San Antonio (ISA).
We are accepting memberships now for 2015, with a goal of enlisting 400 women so that we can award four $100,000 lifechanging grants. Your membership brings us one step closer to reaching our goal. As a member, you not only have a part – and a say – in where the $100,000 grants go, but you can attend our incredible ISA social and educational events that occur throughout the year. The first is scheduled for January 20 with guest speaker Molly Cox, Chief of Engagement for SA2020. She is an amazing speaker who will give updates about this important initiative for San Antonio. You can read about all past projects funded by ISA grants on our website under the “Grants Awarded” tab. Previous recipients
of ISA $100,000 grants include Boys Town Texas Inc., Children's Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP), Christian Senior Services - Grace Place, San Antonio AIDS Foundation, SAY Sí, Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM), Daily Bread Ministries, Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) and St. Jude’s Ranch. ■

Christmas Past REALLY HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS // BY: KIM YOUNG
W
e live in a military community but unless you’ve got family serving; whether military, civil service, or support staff, it’s too easy get wrapped up in your own preparations and forget those who can’t be home for the holidays. I realized recently how little thought I’ve given it over the years. It was a serendipity moment that nearly brought me to tears--definitely not a typical occurrence for a busy Realtor. I had just locked the door, put the key back in the lock box and turned to visit with my clients, Will and Sarah Ramseur about the next step before we went our separate ways that day. Their excitement to finalize the purchase and move in before Christmas was contagious, and as we discussed the closing, Will said, “This is going to be my Christmas.” I wasn’t sure what he meant as he continued, “Last year I sat alone opening the gifts my family had sent me. I was surround by the smell of sewage and forced to find coverage during rocket attacks.” I pinched myself to hold back the tears as his sacrifice magnified my thoughtlessness. Pictures of a sanctuary filled with peace and warmth,

bright colors and twinkling lights and the sound of ringing bells of praise and worship flashed in my brain of Christmas past I’d spent with my family. Even though I’m not trained to minister to those who serve our country, or to help their families deal with the pain of separation during the holidays I did a little research into what I can do when introduced to someone dealing with those issues. According to Ms. Vicki, who writes for miliary.com, deployment during the holidays commonly causes depression. She advises readers to recognize symptoms such as changes in sleep or eating habits. In her column she lists five tips to manage deployment stress. I learned that the key is in not dwelling on what you don’t have. It’s important to spend time with friends and family who can encourage and offer support. “Being in Afghanistan last year really didn’t feel like Christmas at all,” Will said. “I guess that’s why this year no matter how close our move is to Christmas Day, it is very important for me to have a good old fashioned Christmas with my family.” Will is looking forward to food, beer, and watching his kids open their presents under a “big-ass” tree. We at NHOME Texas Magazine want to take this opportunity to thank the service men and women, support staff and their families for the sacrifice they make so we have the freedom to celebrate the holidays at home. ■

And The 2014 Winner Is SETH CAMM, SAN ANTONIO’S ARTIST OF THE YEAR // BY: GABRIEL DIEGO DELGADO
“THE SAN ANTONIO ARTIST’S EXHIBITION PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ARTIST’S OF ALL MEDIA TO BE JUDGED BY A JUROR OF REPUTE.”
EVERY YEAR SINCE 1945 the San Antonio Art League Museum sponsors a solo exhibition for the Artist of the Year. The artist is honored with a retrospective exhibition and accompanying catalog. It provides an opportunity for artists within a sixty mile radius of San Antonio to participate in the competition and possibly be selected for the exhibit in the museum located in the King William District. According to the San Antonio Art League Museum, “The annual San Antonio Artist’s Exhibition grew out of the fabled Edgar B. Davis Competitions of the late 1920s. It provides an opportunity for artists of all media, young or old, experienced or beginners, to be judged by a juror of repute for acceptance in the exhibition and to compete for awards and purchase prizes.” This year, the coveted and highly prestigious award went to Seth Camm, a San Antonio based contemporary painter who evokes the artistic attributes of artists and artisans from long ago to help him forge his way through contemporary issues using century’s old techniques. With chiaroscuro, (Italian for the play of light and dark) Seth works through illusionistic shading; defining the illusion of volume. His soft shadows, deep contrasts, and vibrant hues add a signature timeless aesthetic in the world of contemporary art. From impressionistic people, house portraits, landscapes, still-life and even nightmarish narratives, Seth artistic genre elevates him to a status reserved for master painters. Seth was chosen by a closed jury panel. His artistic gift dominated the submission selections. Mentored by the great Odd Nerdrum, a contemporary Neo- Baroque artist from Sweden, Seth was guided then delved into the classical techniques of Rembrandt, Michelangelo, and da Vinci. With a dark and melancholy overtone, Seth’s portrait paintings take on spiritual affirmations; giving important to the discarded - the homeless, the forgotten, the dismissed; giving voice to the silent and granting eternal purity in the classic renditions for spiritual affirmations and relinquish of penance; washed away by an artistic shaman. “The Artist of the Year” exhibition is also accompanied by a 36-page color catalog of Camm's work. ■
