CRIMINOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE A Powerful Educational Experience Niagara University’s criminology and criminal justice program is one of the largest departments housed on campus, and continues to be a popular program, drawing students from Western New York, Southern Ontario, across the U.S., and abroad. NU’s program educates and guides students in all areas of the fields of criminology and criminal justice, such as victim services, social services, research, and law, while helping students develop a network of connections through internship opportunities, study abroad programs, and faculty-student research. Upon completion of the program, students will be ready for careers within or outside of criminology and criminal justice, or may go on to law school or graduate school.

A Cutting-Edge Curriculum The personalized curriculum includes core courses in criminology, victimology, law enforcement, adjudication and law, and research methodology, as well as broadbased liberal arts courses and independent study intended on giving students a well-rounded and civicminded education. Students will obtain experiential learning through study abroad excursions each spring, internship opportunities, and chances to conduct research with faculty. Minors can be added in forensic science, law, and computer crime (to name a few), or students can work towards a master’s degree in criminal justice administration with the 4+1 B.S./M.S program.

MENTORSHIP

Faculty members publish in nationally and internationally acclaimed journals, and are known as research leaders in criminal justice fields such as victimology, the death penalty, court systems, and many more.

Students can choose from several minors including Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, or Political Science and Law, to name a few. They can also complete the 4+1 program.

There are many opportunities for experiential learning, and internships. In recent years, students have been placed in agencies like the YWCA, DEA, Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the FBI.

CRIMINOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE The criminology and criminal justice department has a full-time professional-in-residence on staff, with more than 20 years of experience, to help place students in meaningful internships. Over the past several years, students have been placed in federal, state, and local criminal justice agencies. Some students have also taken advantage of semester-long internships in Washington, D.C., or with the New York state government in Albany. Students also have great study abroad opportunities – over the last five years alone, close to a hundred students have traveled abroad on two-week excursions to countries including Belgium, Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. “The faculty in the criminal justice department at NU made me really want to learn the most that I could. The professors get to know you by name and strive to push you to achieve your top potential. The department also offers study abroad programs, which have helped shape me into who I am today.”
