MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION IN LITERACY AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

A Powerful Educational Experience

Niagara University’s literacy and English language learners program prepares individuals with initial certification to provide appropriate literacy assessments, interventions, and supports for all learners with a special focus on English language learners. Candidates will also acquire awareness and understanding of the social-cultural and sociolinguistic issues that impact the acquisition of English as an additional language.

Curriculum

This 46-credit hour program emphasizes the integration of reading and writing throughout the birth-12 curriculum, including addressing the needs of English Language Learners. Candidates are prepared to instruct B-12 students with varying literacy abilities, differentiating according to their literacy profiles and language development as English Language Learners.

FLEXIBILITY

Students can complete the Literacy and English Language Learners program in two and half years.

Graduate assistantships, scholarship opportunities, and over 60 different awards for well-qualified matriculated graduate students exist to make graduate school more affordable.

QUALITY

NU’s program will allow graduates to address a variety of literacy strengths and needs in both traditional and inclusive classrooms with learners of diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic, racial, and social backgrounds.

LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Family Literacy Center

The family literacy center is an on-campus educational opportunity for graduate students to demonstrate teaching while enhancing the literacy performance of at-risk readers and their families. The center’s programs focus on improving reading, writing and listening skills among children while supporting the literacy and basic skills of the family itself.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, ELL and literacy instructors were one of the highest needed positions in NYS.
