A Word from the Editor

Wow! 2016 has left us smarting, so much change has happened not only in our political climate but closer to home here at the mother-hub of Cross Productions. Well Holly runs an equestrian business in Leicestershire, based at Fox Covert Farm and will be sharing her experience on the world show jumping stage. This issue we’ve got the hunk of a man, Shaun Chiswell of Optimum Fitness, gracing our premier page. He’s currently changing the way his client’s see their body shape as well as their waistlines. Clean out your closet

2017 Trends

Hello 2017

New Year, time for that wardrobe clear out!

For Spring/Summer 2017 there were a good many menswear fashion predictions from all the major shows, way too many to list here. So, we’ll just talk about three – all colour based too.

It’s a fresh new year and a fresh new start - the perfect time to think about our lifestyle, our goals... and our hair! It’s not uncommon for clients to decide on a style overhaul at the beginning of the year, so if you’re thinking about making a change, look no further...

To start, take every single item out of the wardrobe. When choosing garments to keep, ask yourself a few vital questions to immediately weed out the weak items. 1 Does it still fit? 2 Have you worn it in the last 12-24 months? 3 Would you wear it again? 4 If you saw it in a store, would you buy it? 5 Do you love the way it looks on you? 6 Is it damaged If you answered ‘No’ to one or more of these questions, you’re probably looking at an article of clothing that you bought and loved once, but just isn’t your thing anymore. Hang as many of your clothes neatly in your wardrobe as you can. If you can see an item you’re more likely to wear it. Keeping your wardrobe looking fresh and neat actually makes mornings less stressful. Get new hangers and get it looking uniform. Having all your hangers look the same and facing the same way will make your ‘organisation loving’ inner-self happy. While it may be tempting to colour code your clothes via Pinterest inspiration, make sure your system works for you and won’t confuse you as to where your things are. Organise in a way that will remind you of the clothes you have and love. Sukhina Garcia Betty Brown Boutique info@betty-brown.com 16 | NICHE

White Head to toe white prevailed as a favoured street style trend that was certainly bold. While most gentlemen that harnessed this trend went for more elaborate oriental-inspired silhouettes, there are simpler ways to channel elements of this trend. Team white jeans with a humble white t-shirt, but throw on a baseball cap for a more grounded look. Powder Blue While some gents went for true light blues, others went for more lavender versions of powder blue button downs. Undoubtedly, there was a sea of classic silhouettes, but other powder blue shirt wearers also went for more modern adaptations. These came in the form of asymmetric shoulders, detailing and skinnier fits. For corporate wear, adapt powder blue shirts with ties in the same colour family; think navy and cobalt. Monochrome Monochrome prints featured on the European streets of fashion week. Bold, graphic and unusual, attendees weren’t afraid to make daring statements in the most humble and basic of all the colour combinations. If you aren’t as brave, incorporate black and white in more traditional patterns, like bold stripes or ginghams which will read more classic yet perpetually stylish. Lee Parkin 0116 271 2573 Crossproductions.co.uk

Highlights and lowlights work any hair colour or style and can be perfectly tailored to you. If you like the idea of making a subtle change to your hair, this simple colour technique is perfect. Warm, chocolate tones mixed through dark hair, white and golden shades blended with blonde hair and a gorgeous mix of berries in red – a myriad of multi-tonal hair painting is the most beautiful way to freshen up your look this season! Short hair is always on trend, but now more than ever. Taking a few inches off your cut is possibly the best way to freshen it up and kick start that New Year feeling. Minimise your hair maintenance and go for a laidback, shaggy style. We’re saying goodbye to glossy, perfect shapes and hello to lots of layers, and movement. Keep it relaxed! Is your hair feeling the effects of the party season? Start 2017 right and give your hair some TLC. Deep conditioning hair rituals will be your best friend and at Barrie Stephen Hair and BStyled, we have a range of in-salon treatments and products available to get your hair ready for the year ahead! Give your local Barrie Stephen salon a call to speak to one of our experts. Barrie Stephen 0116 402 6222 Barriestephenhair.co.uk

You better shape up ‘Cause you need a plan. To get the body you desire it’s important you understand how your body works and use this to get the most out of your fitness regimen

After a conversation with the Optimum Fitness Personal Trainer and Mobility Coach Shaun Chiswell, it’s guaranteed you’ll feel motivated to get up and get physical! And after this Christmas, we need it! Here he offers guidance and creates a bespoke plan to get fit and succeed at our New Year resolutions. Shaun’s explanation of how the body works when dieting and exercising opened our eyes to why what we’re doing already might not be working for us. Last issue he explained that our body is the smartest machine around, and with a degree in chemistry and as an ex-Chemist, he knows what he’s talking about. He left his career as a Chemist to be able to truly help people beyond the pharmacy. He specialises in mobility: proving to people they don’t always need tablets or operations to rid those hip or back pains, while improving quality of life as well as fulfilling his clients’ goals of improving their body shape, losing weight and toning up. Here’s his advice to kick us into gear organising our diet and exercise plan.

Diet

“Your metabolism is your fire,” says Shaun. “You have to keep your fire burning all day otherwise it’ll die out.” In other words, eat breakfast and eat regularly. Shaun tells us that cutting down on food will only encourage your body to slow down your metabolic rate because it knows that food has become scarce and so protects you by storing more fat than usual to prepare for the possibility that you are unable to find any more food! Food gives your body energy and when you eat, you are fuelling your fire. By doing this your body has more energy to burn calories with. Shaun introduced us to macros (macronutrients); carbohydrates, proteins and fats your body needs for energy, muscle repair, and satisfaction. As well as counting calories he also counts his macros. “You have to enjoy your food. You can eat your lasagne, Nandos, or whatever it is that you like as long as it fits into your macros.” Shaun says there is no point avoiding the food you love because your cravings may

take over and ruin your progress. Shaun loves Poptarts – so he’ll eat them after a workout as part of his macro carb count. As the amount of macros needed will depend on various factors, he’ll help you work out how much you need and how to count them.

Exercise

“It’s all about finding it fun. Instead of getting on a treadmill, go and run around the park and look at something nice. Take the dog for a walk. Go to a fun class. You have to enjoy what you’re doing.” He advises that going for a run every night will only make you good at running. He believes that cardio has its place but if you’re looking to lose weight, gain muscle tone, or add some curves to your lean body, it’s high intensity interval training (HIIT) you need. “Shorter bursts of high intensity exercise in under a minute will get your heart rate up and shock your body, keeping your metabolic rate up.” This kind of training improves endurance, strength and speeds up metabolic rate and continue to burn calories after your workout. “Be honest with yourself. Some people can only fit in two hours a week.” The ex-Chemist advises 20 minutes three times a week as a starting point and things you can do at home include squats, planks, jogging, tricep dips and more.

Fitness Fixer-upper Mobility tip: hip flexes Hip Flexes help with everyday tasks that you may feel pain when performing such as bending over and climbing stairs. STEP 1: Mobilise by stretching with a roller or ball and prepare your body for this session. STEP 2: Place one foot on a bench and one on the floor. STEP 3: Move your weight from side to side taking notice of where the tight area is and hang out there for a while. Repeat daily.

His new premises in Thurmaston offer battle ropes, sled prowlers, slam balls and lots more to keep training interesting as he doesn’t believe in sitting you on a machine and letting you do all the work. The private Optimum Fitness gym is perfect for carrying out your New Year resolution with no intimidation from other ‘super-fit’ members and dedicated bespoke training from Shaun himself. See page 30 for Shaun’s summary of HIIT. Book in for a private or group session with friends. 07969 664 272 Optimumfitnessleicester.com

The shattering consequences

of medical neglect A widow, who was left devastated after careless actions of NHS staff led to her husband’s death, speaks out about the effects of clinical negligence When diagnosis or treatment for an illness goes wrong, the

Norma’s Story

effects can be damaging and even life threatening. Norma Curtis from Leicester still suffers the consequences of NHS staff’s actions, which were to blame for her husband’s death four years ago. Local law firm Lawson-West say that accidents and negligence shatter lives. Norma and her husband Michael experienced serious neglect that no amount of compensation could ever make up for. Norma said: “I’ve lost somebody precious in my life and his passing could have been avoided. I felt like it was just a failure from everybody, it was like they all went round with blindfolds on.” Vickki Ridgway, Head of Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence at Lawson-West, who dealt with the case said: “Norma and her husband placed their trust in the medics who were tasked with resolving a medical issue but

In 2012 Norma’s husband Michael had an ultrasound scan performed revealing a contracted gallbladder. Health professionals said Mr Curtis would benefit from laparoscopic cholecystectomy (keyhole surgery to the stomach and gall bladder). “I took a book thinking his consultation would take at least half an hour in order to go through everything but he was in and out of there before I’d turned a page. Mick needed the op but I thought there would be a bit more of a discussion about it because he had a scan and you could see that his gall bladder had shrivelled up. But you trust the surgeons and go with what they say.” Norma explained. The operation at Leicester General Hospital, which the couple were told would be a simple process taking as long as it would to have a cup of tea, actually lasted two and a half hours, after which Michael commented ‘I don’t feel as though I’ve had anything done’. His pains were still very much present and the surgeons detailed that the gall bladder had stuck to the liver. The keyhole surgery they performed had caused a rupture to the gall bladder resulting in a bile leak, which Norma believes was the result of ‘taking the easy option’

by choosing not to perform open surgery. When they returned home, Michael deteriorated and was admitted back into hospital as they had found the bile leak. To treat Michael they insisted on using three 19 French Blake drains with a plan to perform an ERCP and stent insertion (a tube through the mouth into the stomach). But Norma advised that her husband had had this type of operation before and that with his bad health he wouldn’t be able to bear it. Despite her warnings the surgeons went ahead without anaesthetic and failed stating that Michael ‘couldn’t withstand it’. “My husband went into that place able to run around and was always helping everyone else, and I had to drag him out in a wheelchair. By the Sunday I had to call an ambulance and the staff at the hospital could not believe he’d been sent home like that, we all wanted answers. Everything was just so blasé – it’s

created another, catastrophic and life changing situation for the couple and their extended family.”

It was so gentle and a very easy experience after

We all wanted answers

something they do day in day out and they didn’t think enough about the individual person.” From the time of his first operation until his death, just three weeks had passed and Norma was left distraught. But she had kept detailed notes on the neglect that they had both suffered right from the hidden away position he was kept in during his time in the ward down to the clear bile that Michael was coughing up; a definitive sign of heart failure, which no one had picked up on during the week leading to his death. Norma turned to Lawson-West for advice, which is when she was put into contact with Vickki who helped her come to terms with the negligence her husband had faced. “Vickki came to my house and the notes I had kept really helped her. While I spent time thinking about them not doing this or that right, Vickki identified that it was the actual operation they did that was wrong despite everything else so she was really really good. She had everyone on standby for my case and it was just so easy to talk to her. It was so gentle and a very easy experience for me after what I’d been through.”

what I’d been through.

Vickki Ridgway

Head of Personal Injury & Clinical Negligence Vickki commented: “For me, people like Norma are the main reason that I undertake this kind of work. Quite often and actually in more cases than not, people who have been injured at the hands of a specialist are seeking an explanation for what has happened and an apology. The financial compensation they receive is rarely a factor in seeking legal advice. In situations such as Norma’s, it would be impossible to put her back in the position she would have been had the negligence not occurred, which is the ultimate remedy sought in this type of case. However, by securing an admission of fault and an apology, I hope that in some way Norma can be at peace, knowing that she’s done everything she can for her husband.” If you have been affected by clinical negligence and need advice, contact Lawson-West. 0116 212 1000 Lawson-west.co.uk Lawsonwestseriousinjuries.co.uk

Detox for life, not just for Christmas

Winter skin with Sensei

All that lovely overindulging, partying, and those late nights at this time of year can result in a slightly jaded look to our skin, tired eyes and dulled skin colour. There are plenty of tricks though to help ‘fake’ lots of sleep, water and healthy digestion until January arrives and the health kick starts and they are the go-to celebrity favourites Enzyme Facial and Glycolic Acid treatments.

Detox, the word is rife at this time of year isn’t it? When January comes around so many of us make all sorts of promises to better ourselves only to fall off the wagon by February. So, what is the secret to achieving long term health success? I now work out four times a week, and feel great as a result. I never use the word diet, I prep my meals and most of all, I have changed my mind-set. The key for me has been realising it’s not only what I put into my body, it’s how I move it and what products I put on it. I have never felt better—if I can do it, so can you.

Now that the nights are drawing in and the weather is turning colder, it is really important to keep your skin hydrated and nourished.

Enzyme Facial This treatment improves the skins clarity and condition by using fruit enzymes which will leave the skin looking bright, clean and smooth. It’s suitable for all skin types and your skin will recover immediately providing you with a clean, fresh and natural looking results. It’s an instant pick me up and perfect for dull, tired skin. Glycolic Acid Glycolic Acid peels are medically endorsed as a viable alternative to more invasive chemical peels. Glycolic acid will gently encourage dead thickened layers to gently lift away. The skin will appear smoother, more translucent, softer and firmer. Glycolic acid peels are used to treat sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged follicles, coarse texture, pigmentation and acne and require next to no down time.

To complement my healthier lifestyle I used a number of natural and organic products to suit my training and diet. Of course, they aren’t essential but I have found that they have helped me a great deal. I recommend: 1 Clean and Lean’s pre-training antioxidant blend ‘Berry Burn’ to feel more energised 2 Wild Nutrition’s Women’s Daily Multi Nutrient & B Complex Plus 3 Chris James Mind & Body Gorgeous Greens for smoothies

Wearing a moisturiser that has a sun protection factor is still necessary even if the weather is cold; moisturisers help to protect the skin from environmental factors such as the wind and the drying effects of central heating; these are really ageing to the skin and can cause premature lines and wrinkles. Exfoliating the face and body will help to slough off dead skin cells and allow a moisturiser to be absorbed into the skin more easily and deeply. This is particularly essential if you wish to continue using fake tans and having any waxing performed during the winter months. By taking care of your skin throughout the colder weather, your skin will be less prone to dryness, itching and irritation.

Niche’s Jenny Cross

kick starts her health journey Dean asked me, “Do you want to look and feel better in 9 days?” “Erm...yes please!” Was my prompt reply Dean Higgin, my Forever Living Consultant, told me about the Clean 9 Program and I was intrigued right away. At first I was slightly concerned about fitting a new programme into my life (what with a busy family life and a business to run!) but, after chatting with Dean, I was assured it was easy and a straightforward process. He gave me a pack which consisted of Forever Living supplements, detailed instructions and Aloe products and told me in 9 days I would feel noticeably lighter and healthier as toxins leave my body. In the pack were all the items I would need to support a healthier body including vitamins, minerals, soluble fibre and nutritional information. After reading up on the program I embarked on the plan and it was very easy to follow. Each product is designed to support a better functioning system to work alongside a healthy lifestyle and with just a few shakes and tablets a day it was no hassle in my busy schedule. The results were brilliant. I felt generally better after just three days and significantly so after the full 9. I love knowing that the Forever products work with my body to rid it of toxins and supports a healthier system by giving my body the tools to absorb nutrients better from the foods I put in it. My skin looks better, I feel leaner and far more motivated to start my healthy new year journey. Just great. Jenny Cross Niche Magazine

Portion Size

Quick tips today; five key points which may help you with your fat loss goals 1. Eat protein with every meal. One palm sized portion of protein with each meal for women, two palm sized portions for a male 2. Eat fat with EVERY meal! Contrary to belief, your fat intake should be as high as one third of your total calorie intake. This has a heap of beneficial factors; among them, it will help suppress your appetite and reduce your risk of snacking between meals. Aim for a range of fats: poly, mono, and don’t forget the saturated fat!! Get it eaten; your body will thank you for it! 3. Reduce your intake of processed carbohydrates, try to limit this and stick to whole foods 4. Eat your greens and eat some more! Eat your five a day we always hear. However, limit your fruit intake to one small portion with a couple of meals

5. Eat! Your metabolism is directly linked to your calorific intake so ensure you are eating enough! Fad diets rely on a large and often dangerous calorie deficit. Don’t fall into that trap, you will trash your body and your hormones and your mood will be outrageous!

Where to find your proteins, carbs and fats. Protein Red meat White meat Dairy products

Measuring Progress

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail; an important statement, no? But how do we know we are failing? Well, by tracking our progress of course! What’s that, you aren’t tracking your progress? Maybe it’s time to start. So how do we do it? Here’s a few markers you can easily keep track of. 1. Waistline If your goal is fat loss, your waistline measurement should be decreasing gradually but should never go up over a period of weeks. Ensure you measure this at the same time of day i.e. in a morning on an empty stomach (so you aren’t taking a measurement whilst bloated). 2. Weight Your weight is not always a true indicator as lean bodyweight can increase at the same time as fat reduces, meaning no change in your actual weight. Generally speaking, unless you are ultralean, your weight should shift downwards as you lose body fat. Don’t get too bogged down with this one as your weight may not change for a couple of weeks. It will fluctuate due to hydration, sodium and glycogen on a daily

basis so for that reason it is pretty pointless to weigh yourself every day. Instead, look at weighing on a weekly/bi-weekly basis. Doing this should show you a true picture of consistency and also a lot less tears in the bathroom! 3. Photos Can’t stress this one enough. Get your clothes off and get those pictures taken! All angles: front, side and back. Your most accurate indicator is your appearance and the camera does not lie! 4. Performance What is your performance like in the gym and what are your numbers looking like on your lifts? Don’t Know? Write them down! Numbers should increase week by week, either the amount of weight you are lifting or the number of repetitions you are performing. If your performance is suffering significantly it could be a sign that you are under fuelled, potentially. Keep this awesome nutrition guide from Griffin Fit’s Lizzie Griffin and stick it on the fridge or something! If you aren’t doing these simple things you could be severely limiting your progress. So, as Lizzie says, get on it and start making progress now! Get in touch for a free consultation.

certain of improving, and that’s your own self. Aldous Huxley

Working on the cranio sacral system This New Year we focus a little more on what’s going inside of us as well as the health promises we make for our bodies To truly make a positive change in our lives taking a good look at what’s going on in our minds and emotional well-being is the only place to start. But, where do you start? Well, it is inevitable that what has gone on in our lives shapes and makes us who we are, influencing our relationship with ourselves and others. But, by confronting, releasing and letting go of the negative things that we have experienced, we can absolutely influence how we view our present and our view of it in a positive way. Of course, there are ways you can do this independently which all certainly help in this change and many of us do them already, perhaps through counselling, keeping a journal or yoga and meditation. However, there is another highly effective way to help release the trauma or negative cycles in your life and it’s called Craniosacral Therapy or CST. Priti Coles, a registered Craniosacral Therapist, helps clients let go of the past, feel positive in the present and look forward to the future by letting go of the things that could be holding them back. So, what is Craniosacral Therapy? In short, it is a hands-on method of whole body evaluation and treatment that can have a positive impact on nearly every system of the body. The non-invasive treatment is thought to release deeply held patterns of emotional or physical dysfunction which can be a result of injury, illness and personal circumstance. As the movement and desire for inner peace and inner wellbeing grows, CST is growing in popularity! Because it works on a physical and psychological level it treats the whole person and facilitates the body’s natural power of self-healing.

It was Recognised over a 100 years ago by an American osteopath. CST is named for the craniosacral system: the bones, tissues and fluid that support your central nervous system, which has a motion all of its own referred to as the craniosacral rhythm. By placing gentle hands on specific parts of the body and feeling the craniosacral rhythm Priti facilitates your healing. You are brought back into a state of balance and vitality also giving you the chance to unplug, recharge, evaluate and find inner peace! The treatment often makes people very emotional as it releases old patterns and trauma to achieve a renewed and released feeling afterwards.

For wherever you are on life’s path it really is about giving your own body back the tools it needs to heal itself and what could be more selfimproving than that this New Year?

HIIT the gym for maximum benefits

At this time of year, stepping onto the scales will form part of most individuals’ routines as they assess the damage following on from the festive period, but how much does our body weight actually tell us about our overall health?

As an ex-Chemist with a biology degree, 13 years’ experience as a Personal Trainer and Mobility Coach, and with it being the New Year and all, I thought I’d introduce you to a method of working out that may be new to you.

Fit and healthy beyond plan The New Year brings with it a host of healthy promises, but I believe, to achieve a long-term healthy lifestyle these changes need to be subtle and realistic enough to go the distance, i.e make it past February. Ditch the diet. Working with the supplements from Arbonne the new you is not going to be about counting calories, starving yourself or deprivation, it’s about an education in what not to eat based on nutritional science. We all need 1/8th fat, 50% vegetables, 25% protein and 1/8th carbohydrates, it is as simple as that. Back it up. As you make changes to your health through the food that you eat your body will also greatly benefit from the right supplements. Arbonne’s range for the Fit and Healthy Beyond Plan includes carefully developed supplements which will help build a healthier system as well as helping to give your body the right tools as it lets go of toxins and begins to repairs itself.

At David Lloyd Clubs we aim to provide the latest state of the art equipment for our members. This is why we are proud ambassadors of Boditrax technology. This medically approved body composition analyser helps to manage weight loss, increase fitness levels and support your goals with scans that read your body composition accurate to within 1 per cent. Boditrax measures and categorises weight into body fat mass, fat free mass, bone mass and total body water, all in a matter of seconds. Users can track changes, trace movement and change for long term health management.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is exactly what it says it is. Here’s why HIIT using ropes, sled or hill sprints are better than jogging on a treadmill. Using the treadmill can be labourious, up to an hour running even to make any real progress. It can be boring and it only burns calories while you’re actually moving. Your body will also get used to it becoming more efficient and learning to burn less calories while also possibly being bad for your joints and losing your muscle mass. Whereas benefits of HIIT include: ◆ Less time consuming – 20 minutes is fine ◆ More fun and interesting ◆ Calories continue to burn post-workout ◆ Metabolic rate is increased for over 24 hours ◆ Muscle mass is retained

So instead of stepping onto the scales to find out how much you weigh, come and find out exactly what your body is made up of and what should be your areas of concern. Whether it’s your visceral fat percentage (around your organs) or your metabolic age, Boditrax is able to go into more detail than you would have ever experienced and help you on the way to changing your body, health and confidence for the better.

Do your HIIT workouts in blasts of 30 seconds going all out to your absolute max. Allow one to three minutes of recovery. Then repeat this cycle up to 10 times.

Luscious, full Lox Hair extensions have come a long way since they were first available on the market thankfully. Now they are luscious, easily manageable and absolutely discreet so that no one even questions whether the hair is all the clients’ own. At our salon, Lox Hair Design, we adopt a natural philosophy when using hair extensions and always remain faithful to preserving the natural hair creating a tailored look every time. The key is in the bespoke experience and after an in-depth consultation when each client’s hair is carefully considered, it’s important to determine the ideal amount of hair is added and matched with the perfect Beauty Works hair.

LOX wins Master Extensionist Award

Using the very latest in advanced extension applications the hair is then applied by what’s known as micro-beading technique which uses no glue, sewing, heat or stitching. Using matching copper beads the hair is discreetly and expertly attached to the roots. This one set of extensions, if cared for using great products, I always recommend Beauty Works, will last for three months and then the hair can be removed and re-attached up to three times.

Beauty Works awarded us their Master Extensionist Award making us the only salon in Leicester with this fantastic accolade proving our professionalism, and quality of products and service. I’m proud to see Lox growing from strength to strength and we hope to continue with more awards next year! I’d like to say a huge thank you to every one of our clients for their custom and support. We couldn’t have done it without you.

The results always astound our clients, and to be honest they still astound me!

My Journey

Bilateral Breast Augmentation The diary entries of Jessica – a patient of Nuffield Hospital’s Cosmetic Surgeon Mr Sankar Friday 7th May My first consultation with Mr Sankar was to decide whether he was the surgeon for me and, of course, whether I was the patient for him. Right from the start he made me feel totally at ease and there was a nurse in the room at all times. He asked me what type of breast surgery I was considering and why I wished to have it. I have always felt my breasts were out of proportion with the rest of my body and didn’t feel very womanly unless I was wearing my ‘chicken fillets’! I showed him a picture and we discussed how he must take into consideration the size of my frame, skin availability and any complications that may arise if you push these boundaries, and that the picture was not really possible. He was very clear on what he would do safely and if I wished to exceed this then he would not be the surgeon for me. This made my decision that he was the one! My measurements and pictures were taken and I was fitted with a special tight vest to try various implants. I couldn’t decide straight away so he said to fill a plastic sandwich bag with rice to test out different sizes whilst at

home. I left with a very clear picture of the surgery, possible side effects, and look I can achieve.

Friday 14th May My follow up appointment today ensured I was fully aware of all procedures and entirely happy to go through with the surgery. Mr Sankar revisited all points discussed in the previous consultation to ensure I was clear on everything. I filled out forms and had some swabs and blood tests to ensure surgery could go ahead. Mr Sankar reassured me that if I had any more questions then I shouldn’t hesitate to contact him. I had two weeks cooling off period in case I changed my mind. During this time the nurse was available for me to phone if I had any questions.

Friday 28th May The day of surgery

At the hospital I was checked in and introduced to my wonderful nurse. I was left to get comfortable in my lovely room with fantastic views. An anaesthetist visited me and asked numerous questions followed by another anaesthetist who asked

the same questions again to check. Mr Sankar arrived, took some before pictures and marked me out ready for theatre where I was introduced to the staff before they inserted my cannula. Before long it was all over and I was awake in the recovery bay with a nurse close by who made me feel very relaxed. I was taken back to my room, checked regularly without fail, and fed and watered. As I sat up my chest felt as though there was a really heavy weight that was going to fall off and I could not bring myself to look at what had been done yet. I was fitted with some special leg massagers to help with blood circulation while I slept. Mr Sankar was brilliant and I would definitely recommend him if you are considering Bilateral Breast Augmentation in order for your transformation journey to be a successful one. Find out what happened next in Jessica’s journey in our March/April issue 19.

The Wedding planner

St Martins house is well known on the wedding scene for attracting couples from afar to the captivating setting We investigated why the Grade II listed building has been so consistently popular among couples over the years and ultimately, what you should be looking out for in the location of your dream venue.

The Guest List

How many people can be accommodated? This question will dramatically influence whether or not you get married in certain locations. Get a rough idea of your guest list numbers so that you can easily shortlist your preferred venues. One of the reasons that make St Martins House a great find is that they can accommodate 12-200 people in The Grand Hall which is spacious yet decidedly intimate.

The Budget

Sit down with your partner and decide how much you are willing to spend. Like St Martins House, your venue should have a range of flexible packages to suit most price points. Your budget and guest list combined will make it easier to decide which places you can immediately rule out.

The Date

Depending on the couple, the date may be more or less important than the location, or they may be of equal standing. Any which way, the date will of course need to be prioritised.

And bear in mind, the location you have your heart set on may not be available for a number of years even, so either the date or the location may need to be compromised.

The Location

For a completely relaxed and fun celebration, its best your venue isn’t too difficult to get to – you don’t want your guests disgruntled before they arrive. St Martins House is in the centre of Leicester city, so parking is readily available as is accommodation. It is within easy walking distance from car parks and the Historic Quarter provides a beautiful backdrop to set a romantic scene. Hear the Cathedral organ played as you explore the famous area that is proud to be home to King Richard III.

The Theme

Next, it’s time to think about whether your shortlist will suit the theme you have in mind for your big day. In The Grand Hall of St Martins House, captivating high vaulted ceilings and 19th century features show the venue for the traditional Grade II listed building that it is, as well as having a modern fresh vibe. The spacious Grand Hall has the facilities to be as flexible as you like with decoration and layout making it suitable for most themes. Expert wedding advisors are also on hand at every stage to help get you the best deals and take the stress out of the planning.

The Food

What’s on the menu may depend largely on the theme of the big day so you’ll need a venue that can cater to your specific requirements. St Martins can provide buffets and gala dinners and are very open to other dining styles. They’ve now teamed up with Eastern Heroes Kitchen run by Leicester TV Chef sensation Kwoklyn Wan. The partnership means St Martins now offer a bespoke Oriental catering service for those extra special occasions ranging from Chinese to Malaysian dishes.

The Photos

If you’re a big fan of photos, the interiors and exteriors of your venue will mean a lot to you as they will influence the look of your snaps. If you’re not completely happy with some areas, don’t worry as you can make up for this by finding a great photographer who will know exactly how to make the most of the location. Situated in the midst of Leicester’s finest historical buildings, you and your guests can enjoy the serene surroundings that St Martins is set in that have been recently revamped to add a modern twist to the classical background steeped in history. Plan in advance and if you need any help along the way, contact St Martins House for guidance. 0116 261 5200 Stmartinshouse.com Nick.Quinn@StMartinsHouse.com

Venue Approvals Most professional venues handpick and audit caterers before approving them and are probably one of the best indicators of a caterer’s standing and quality. The more grand the venue, the more stringent the approval process. Food Safety Rating Often overlooked, any commercial caterer must be registered, inspected and rated. Make sure their kitchen address is published and search online for their food safety rating. Visit Meet up with your potential caterers at their kitchen rather than at set up tasting events wherever possible. This will provide a valuable insight into how and where your food is prepared, what size they are, what resources they have in place and how the business is being managed. Pricing Quality has a price, if prices or package deals are cheap there will be a reason. Taste test Once you pick your caterer, ask to meet up at their kitchens and sample a few dishes to get a real taste for the catering and to help define your menu choices – the proof is in the pudding so to speak! Creating Memories to Entertain You for a Lifetime

Whilst it may not be the first thing you sort out (that’s nearly always the dress right?), the entertainment on the big day should be given just as much consideration Your Wedding Entertainment sees the meeting of two minds whom, whilst different, share a knowledge of, and passion for, creating those ‘wow’ moments for the bride, groom and their guests on their special day. Providing hand-picked, top quality wedding entertainers in all forms through a personal and very professional service, these guys deliver. Co-founders Gareth John and Daniel Cassidy know how to entertain, particularly in the wedding sphere, and are both part of renowned wedding and party band, Johnny and the Goodtime Boys, coined by Daniel. Gareth’s outfits, The King Lean Street Band, The JD’s, Blue Theft Jazz and The Paradimes, have all wowed wedding crowds since their inceptions and Daniel also has event planning and marketing experience through running his own events company, Island Events. So how did it all come about? “It’s something that Dan had mentioned

to me a few times, the initial idea being a general entertainment agency, but once we started talking we realised that our joint experience lay in this area, and we are both of the view that it is better to specialise than generalise,” Gareth explained. The professional musician and bandleader was looking to start a new venture. “It seemed a perfect fit, and we feel that both in the personal nature of our service and quality and diversity of entertainment we provide, we offer something different to our competition.” For Daniel, the company formation makes for a compelling new chapter, whilst he also sees the project as a natural progression from the wedding entertainment experience that has run in his family for generations, leading him from his role in an Irish show band at a very young age to running a wedding party band now. He said: “I’m really excited to be setting this up and look forward to growing it. Both of us enjoy entertaining audiences in

the bands we’re involved with and manage, and so this partnership is an exciting one and we look forward to delivering top quality wedding entertainment from the word go!” With everything from DJs with live percussion and audience participation in the set, to a New Orleans brass band and live band 80s experience, Your Wedding Entertainment has it covered, and are firm believers in the ‘if we don’t have it, we’ll find someone who does’ philosophy. Their strong connections with wedding suppliers from all fields mean they are also happy to assist with other parts of the day, and have a vast range of entertainment to cover everything from ceremonies through to evening receptions. The music played out at a party can make or break it. The wrong ‘vibe’ can turn the whole thing off and leave an empty dance floor glaringly and often embarrassingly obvious That said, it works the other way too, the right music can make a party that no one will forget. Midlands Pro DJ is a family owned business started by identical twins and music worshippers Ian and Bryan McIntosh who, along with a wealth of music knowledge and passion for the industry, set out to make it their mission that no event would fall victim of an empty dance floor. Their lively, friendly and enthused attitudes mean they cater for a wide range of events, provide a host of services, including musicians as well as a wide range of entertaining acts. Interacting with hosts and guests the Pro-DJs make sure any event

is memorable and talked about for all the right reasons long after the dancing shoes are kicked off at the end of the night! Discussing all the requirements for client’s ‘do’s in advance, the duo ensure that the music and feel is just right for any event whether it is the latest chart music, 60s soul or a bit of 70s disco! Clients who have booked Midlands Pro for events choose the act time and time again simply because the boys deliver everything that’s needed to ensure a good time is had by all. For corporate events the team work with local specialists and suppliers to provide other important elements including venue sourcing, conferences, dinner dances, award ceremonies, themed events, team

building, launches and promotions. A creative, committed attitude as well as being approachable and affordable has really put Midlands Pro DJ on the Midlands’ event map. A wedding day is a highly personal event with many couples having special songs and genre requirements or simply with the aim for the party to dance their socks off – both options are in safe hands. Whether it’s a wedding day, birthday party or a big corporate event, the Midlands Pro team bring the same level of high quality, professional service as well as a whole lot of fun and dancing. 07929 452 287 Midlandsprodj.com

Cocktail Class at Camis Lounge Lutterworth’s Camis Lounge is one of South Leicestershire’s finest bars and coffee lounges That’s what it says on the website but really, this doesn’t do it any justice – you have to see it to truly appreciate it! It’s ultra stylish with a super relaxing atmosphere and art inspired décor. Their cocktail classes are brand new, and being an independently run bar and lounge, you get the full attention of your master cocktail connoisseur. But first, you’ll be taken to your private curtainedoff area; which receives an instant ‘wow’ from all who lay eyes upon it. Glistening ornaments adorn fancy tables with decorative chairs and

sparkly Christmas decorations hang from the windows. We met Sam, our cocktail coach, who had us making three classics and even let us choose a fourth as we had extra time due to our cocktails going down a little too well. He had us laughing instantly and left us in between each of our handmade beverages to let us enjoy them in peace – or quite the opposite as you can imagine! You’ll then be served a delicious selection of canapés. The chef informed us he liked to emphasise the taste and full flavours that can be achieved with simple dishes.

The chicken and chorizo skewers were mouth-watering; the mini fish and chips with mushy peas were lusciously moreish, panna cotta was creatively sweet, and apple strudel was super scrummy. Having experienced Camis Lounge we would recommend this as the perfect location for a hen party event that would head into Leicester afterwards or that would keep the party right here in Lutterworth. 01455 203 452 Camislounge.co.uk

Banking on a

good steak Leicester’s iconic former NatWest bank building opens its doors to the city’s foodie crowd to huge acclaim You know us, we love our food and with the recent opening of Middletons Steakhouse in Leicester’s most happening St Martins area we paid a visit to check that it was worthy of said acclaim. Of course, the menu is as you would expect, a delicious mix of prime cuts of meat, grills, burgers all cooked to order using the finest ingredients. The décor is neat, minimalist and effortlessly cool with the restaurant thankfully holding on to many of the beautiful buildings original features including stunning ceiling detail, stained glass windows and the installation of a chandelier really suits the ambiance. The spacious dining area creates a wonderfully relaxed vibe and with the warm welcome from staff, it makes it the ideal spot for a romantic meal, take note for Valentine’s Day, birthday celebrations or a social meal. Making our choice for our evening wasn’t easy but after studying hard we went for Garlic Mushrooms and the Brie Wedges to start and the Fillet Steak and Bavette Steak cuts for main. Each accompanied by a choice of

sauces, field mushrooms and tomatoes and a choice of potato or salad side. Steaks are tricky to get right, but ours were both on the mark, delicate and cooked exactly to our specification. We didn’t go for a dessert this time, although there was a mouth-watering choice of home cooked options. Add to this a fabulous selection of wines and a cocktail list with all the classics and you have the recipe for a great night in the heart of the city centre. 0116 319 5185 Middletons-shg.co.uk 2 St Martins, Leicester, LE1 5DB NICHE | 61

Exclusive organic drinks company launches on a global scale with bars, nightclubs and retailers all looking to stock the unique, organic alcoholic spirits and soft drinks. Leicester’s Chris Ryan of Pure Organic Drinks has a passion, and it’s his passion for bringing organic, high quality and attractive thirst-quenchers to a wider audience through three years of careful research, creation and bottle design. We spoke to Chris, the director of Pure Organic, to find out where his desire to bring highquality, organic refreshments started. He said: “Organic foods are becoming a huge part of our shopping experience and the benefits of choosing organic are widely known yet there was a distinct gap for organic drinks. I wanted to bring organic drink produce to a wider audience whilst making sure they were appealing in bottle design, unique and high quality, and superior tasting. For me, choosing organic produce is about choosing a healthier option for myself and the environment, and I could see that others felt the same, the option just isn’t there a lot of the time.” So, why choose organic? Well, first and foremost organic products are a more natural choice. Free from pesticides, additives and chemicals that can be harmful to our health and well-being in the long-term, these chemical free options are not only better for our bodies, but also the environment too. With many of us moving towards healthier lifestyle choices, and some shunning sugar or avoiding gluten, the Pure Organic drinks range offers sugar free vodkas and gluten free lagers so choosing a healthy lifestyle no longer means

that going out and socialising with a couple of drinks is forbidden. The exciting range features low calorie softer options too, including a pure orange juice and sugar free cola which are delicious alone in their own right or mixed with alcohol to create an organic drink match made in heaven. The Birch Tree Water is causing a huge stir with its 100 per cent natural content that is sugar-free, high in antioxidants and packed with minerals, electrolytes and micronutrients. Sustainably sourced from birch trees, it’s been dubbed by many as the new coconut water and rightly so with much the same health benefits and more besides. Choosing these drinks isn’t all health benefits and virtue though, Chris knows that when people go out to enjoy an evening of drinks, whatever the occasion, they want high quality with excellent tastes and attractive designs. He says: “I knew from the offset that it was important for each and every spirit and drink to look and taste the part, so I carefully selected superior tasting organic drinks. I designed and manufactured my own signature bottles and special limited edition glasses.” Drink connoisseurs are commenting on the excellent taste from the spirits, soft drinks and larger and here at Niche we concur. Zara Tyers, Niche Sales Executive said: “I tried the signature vodka half expecting the usual ‘back of the throat burn’ but to my delight it wasn’t there, instead it was a smooth and easy drink. Amazing!”

The resulting collection of beverages are stylish and sought after by fast growing crowds of consumers and bars. Retailers taking deliveries to stock the exclusive range across the UK in order to meet demand. Look out for the distinct, beautifully designed bottles from the Pure Organic selection on your next night out and if you can’t see it, ask politely that they should have it for the next time! 0116 216 8240

The nightmare

Christmas

after

Credit card bills stacked scarily high after the big spend at Christmas? Here’s how you can get help to clear them

I

n the last issue we looked at the effects of remortgaging when trying to save extra cash for Christmas. Well, if you missed your chance to find a new deal before then fret not, now is a great time to take another look. Here’s how remortgaging can help your finances after Christmas. First of all, remortgaging isn’t a comfortable word and doesn’t put us at ease if we don’t fully understand how it works. Put simply, remortgaging is the act of finding a payment system better suited to you than the deal you’re currently on. Each mortgage deal will usually be most efficient for around two years, so if you have been paying your mortgage for longer than this, it’s likely that you have automatically been put on your Standard Variable Rate (SVR), which is basically that same premise as letting your current car insurer automatically renew your deal when it comes to an end. Like your car insurance, the odds are in your favour of finding another deal on your mortgage that will save you money. For a more in depth explanation, you can speak to our mortgage brokers of choice, Mortgages Made Easy (MME). MME are family-run mortgage and insurance providers who have found the best deals for over 40,000 people in just 14 years of business. Owner Peter Simpson stresses the fact that being family-run makes a huge difference to the level of service they can provide. Treated as an individual rather than a number, MME’s clients are kept in contact throughout their deal and updated on any changes to the law that may affect them and their position by continuously trained and examined advisors. Being independent also

means that MME has access to the whole market so is able to arrange and secure better deals and make more options available to you that you wouldn’t find on the high street. Not tied to one lender, MME is therefore able to offer impartial advice.

Why Remortgage ◆ To consolidate your debts ◆ You want a more flexible mortgage ◆ You want to switch mortgage types

Peter suggests that many customers are looking to remortgage to save money generally, to move onto a fixed rate so they can keep track of finances more easily, or to release equity in the home if its value has increased. There are many reasons. But how exactly will remortgaging in the New Year help you to clear your credit cards?

◆ The value of your home has risen

You can add your credit card debt to mortgage repayments by securing a new deal researched by MME experts. This can help reduce your debt and also put all these payments together so they are far easier to keep track of.

◆ Move you onto a fixed rate deal so you can be certain of what your repayments will be

At the moment, mortgage rates have been found to be historically low so remortgaging and adding your debts onto your payments may result in you still spending less a month than you were previously. It may then perhaps be tempting to spend more on other luxuries and create more debt but with a very strong emphasis on their family background, MME will always advise each individual when they need it most and look out for you as though you are one of the MME family members. MME are happy to discuss your mortgage over the phone, at your home, in their offices or at a place of your convenience when the time is right for you. Book your free homebased consultation for advice.

◆ To secure fixed payments ◆ You want to pay more

What remortgaging can do for you ◆ Save you money

◆ Release equity in your home if it has gone up in value ◆ Fund home improvements ◆ Move you onto a mortgage that better suits your current circumstances

Those in Property have their say

Credit cards postChristmas Remortgaging can help save you lots of money if you know where to look. You may have done so in the later months of last year in order to save extra cash for Christmas but if you didn’t, don’t worry. At this time of year, remortgaging is one way to help clear those scary credit card bills after those hectic spending sprees. Finding a deal that is better suited to you than the deal you’re currently on is generally a good reason to look into remortgaging anyway. But people look for new deals for other reasons too, such as wanting to feel secure with a fixed rate deal, save money for other credit card luxuries, or if the value of the home has risen. Once you come to the end of your deal, which would usually last around two years, you will automatically be switched on to your Standard Variable Rate (SVR), which often means you end up paying more.

EAS’s visually stimulating showroom

Dream homes - getting the look

Niche enjoyed an evening of prosecco and canapés with excellent company courtesy of the lovely people at eas Windows. Their new branding, complete with red heart and slogan ‘love coming home’, was complimented perfectly with the welcome and friendly vibes that eas customers know well.

Few of us will design our own property. We may choose the spec and trim we want in our vehicles to bring to life our perfect four-wheeled friend but even in these days of mass production and universal trends on the high street, it is still possible to personalise our pad.

The event launched the beginning of the transformation of the new showroom that will be developed over the next year and served as a ‘taster’ for things to come. Emma and Adam Spradbury shared their plans and ideas for the renovation and have used the feedback from valued customers and business associates as to what they would like to see featured in the showsite. Their reputation within the community is one of integrity, and the night a real celebration of this through the support of local business and clients. Our own Jenny Cross and Sally Smith joined the crowd to take in and provide feedback and they were in good company with none other than Leicester local celebrity Zubeir Hassam, who stars in the latest amazon advert taking the net by storm.

With the help of some professional advice from leading interior designers Charles Lowe Interiors of Loughborough and their large stock in nine showrooms of accent and décor pieces, your own home can truly be as individual as your own character. Lowes themselves are now celebrating their 175th year of trading, having guided home buyers from fairy tale castles to one bedroom flats. They scour the lands across Europe in search of suppliers to find something different for you and remain acknowledged professionals in The English Country House look, that quintessential homely, time proven ambience that will make your house a home.

As we are family run, independent experts, we are not loyal to any mortgage lenders and can offer a wider range of choices than those found on the high street. You can add your credit card debt to your mortgage repayments by securing a new deal researched and advised by us helping reduce your debt and put all payments together so they’re easier to keep track of. Stefan Wardle

The top floor suite showcased the company’s latest products in such a way to allow the potential clients to see the products ‘in action’, a real life layout scene of windows, doors and conservatories which all helps to appreciate the true quality of the innovative eas product range. Adam Spradbury

Hooray for Hygge! You’ve probably seen or heard this word (pronounced “hue-gah”) around quite a lot recently as it has seemingly, suddenly, been taken to heart by us Brits It is a Danish word which has no literal translation in English but means taking pleasure in small moments, like the ritual of grinding and making your own fresh coffee or taking the time to light some candles in the evening. It em-bodies everything cosy, homely, feel-good, familiar and happy. What could be more wonderful?

Nordic House - Whitewashed Driftwood Hurricane £124 I love how earthy and natural this is. It will complement any décor scheme.

So in the sense of interior design, hygge can be used to create that perfect feeling of a calm, re-laxed, happy home which is especially pertinent in these darkest months after Christmas as we wait for spring to come. With the spirit of hygge in mind, I have chosen my top picks this month to be items which speak to my own sense of hearth and home namely beautiful candle holders, gorgeous soft cashmere, pretty tableware, inspirational artwork and divine bed linen for the best night’s sleep. These are my personal choices – what are yours? Hygge is such a beautiful concept for us to embrace, one which really opens us up to enjoying the moment, finding happiness in the small things even on ordinary days and when you think about it, what could be more important? The oldest human wisdom tells us that these ideas are the key to a happy life so I think we can all afford to allow a little (or a lot) of hygge into our lives, especially in these short dark January days. Happy Hygge New Year!

Fish: keeping yours out of troubled waters

Cork makes a comeback

Everyone worries when changing the look of a property or planning a big project, and obviously money and tight budgets play a huge factor within the design and ideas in place.

So last issue I discussed what type of food you should feed your fish, and how this affects your maintenance. But what about the type of fish you have in your pond?

Along with environmental enthusiasts, we couldn’t be happier that cork is back! Durable and versatile, it can be used as flooring throughout the home in a variety of colours and can even become a unique feature wall.

So when dealing with all these important matters with our customers, we make sure to listen and give advice on how to achieve the perfect results. We also ensure that they achieve this without over spending or having a product that doesn’t meet their requirements or fit the plan that they have in their mind.

This probably has the biggest effect on the pond environment, eco system and general pond maintenance. For simplicity, I would put fish into three groups.

Many of our new customers are family and friends of existing customers who want to pass on the stress free and un-pressured sales experience they themselves received. This way they know they are placing them in and their property in safe hands. Whether it be a bespoke design or a project that needs to match the existing building, our wide range of products cover all aspects of the glazing industry to ensure we can accommodate all your ideas and designs. Each of our staff members are educated and trained in all the fields of the industry from fabricating to installations and most importantly, product knowledge. With such an expert team, we are able to give the correct specialist advice that will help you to achieve the best possible end result that fits the brief and guarantees customer satisfaction. You have fish that continue to grow no matter the size of the environment; this put lots of pressure on the filter of a pond. These will be fish like Koi, general Carp and you can sometimes put Orfe into this category; a silvery freshwater fish of the carp family.

It’s soft underfoot, easy to clean and looks warm, stylish and earthy in any space. Its fashionable comeback is realised for a number of reasons but specifically, its green credentials are making cork the material of choice for those looking to make stylish, eco-friendly interior choices.

Next issue I will discuss how planting your garden correctly will still give you awesome gardens in the winter! Michael Wheat

A renewable and natural material, cork is scraped from the bark of the cork oak tree which requires at least 20 years of maturity before harvesting. The tree is then left to regrow and can be used again after sufficient growth time, absolutely no trees are destoyed in the process of cork’s creation. Grown predominantly in Mediterranean countries with over 50 per cent coming from Portugal, cork trees are thought to cover approximately 2.5 million hectares of land with each tree boasting a lifespan of 250 years. Furthermore, the unique tree has the remarkable capacity to retain carbon and a harvested cork tree fixates almost five times more carbon. Its attributes make it truly eco-friendly and an entirely naturally sustainable product, which through use, actually contributes to the preservation of a unique habitat in the world. Mark Lucas

Then you have sturgeon type fish; often called a “living fossil” as it’s part of a family of fish that has existed for more than 135 million years. They need lots of oxygen, they eat a sinking food that is high in oil and very desirable to other fish, and they also can grow to be huge! Some sturgeon can grow to 6ft! Not ideal for small ponds. And lastly, pond fish. Examples of these are Goldfish and Shubunkins, which tend to adapt to the size of the pond and are ideal for most small pond environments.

A brand new estate and lettings agent on the city scene, Whitegates opened its doors only a month ago, but is already seeing broad success, with a buoyant property market 7% up on last year and sales rushing through to meet the new stamp duty deadline, easing the pain of buying. Located in the former Santander bank premises, at 3 Halford Street, the lavishly refurbished new office and showroom delivers both in style and substance.

"People expect us to be dealing with only high end property, but we cover homes across the board throughout Leicestershire, from large rural detached properties to city centre apartments:' said Mitul Gadhia, Managing Director. The Whitegates team is headed up by Managing Director Mitul Gadhia, who has a passion for property. Mitul has his own property portfolio and successfully runs three franchises under the Martin & Co/Whitegates brands to provide a distinctly different service from other agents. The world’s leading property market convention MIPIM is the premier real estate event gathering the most influential players from all sectors of the international property industry for four days of intense networking, learning and transactions through organised premium events, conferencing and dedicated exhibition zones 2017 will see Leicestershire part of a new initiative ‘The Midlands Engine’ where 86 local authorities, 27 universities and 11 LLEP’s will join forces to give the Midlands one voice. Recognised as the UK’s catalyst for growth working with the private sector to attract and drive inward investment it will be a unique offering that really showcases the strengths throughout the region. The reason for the move from 2016’s ‘The Power of 3’, which was made up of just Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire was purely political. Helen Donnelan Inward Investment Officer at Leicester City Council quotes: “The Power of 3 gave us a great alliance on the world stage at MIPIM 2016, the idea of collaborating with the wider Midlands area will create a tour de force at the premier construction and development event. The Midlands Engine will perfectly synergise with the public and private sectors and ultimately drive interest and investment to our region.” The UK Midlands Pavilion will boast a 200m2 exhibition space sited on the main concourse entrance adjacent to the London Pavilion. 80% of delegates are expected to use this route. Boasting a professional meeting area, café, bar and main stage, exhibition stands and central reception this really will be a huge platform to highlight and project the Midlands proposition where various destinations will be featured. 78 | NICHE

Team Leicestershire; a group of 20 plus private businesses who joined together to host and welcome new investors and propositions, will be taking to the South of France with a strong alliance of professionals across the different sectors related to construction and development. Each sponsor of Team Leicestershire invite a careful selection of guests to join them at the two events that will showcase Leicester’s offering. To strengthen Team Leicestershire and to ensure the relationships founded at MIPIM had longevity and sustainability Building Connections was born. Looking to create partnerships for success and keep Leicestershire on a global map Team Leicestershire works alongside and supports organisations such as ProCon, RICS and RIBA. Working hand in hand with the inward investment team at Leicester City Council, Building Connections will continue to host events back in the home town of Leicester all year round. The aim being to see exciting companies and fresh new businesses relocate to the area. Offering practical support as well as a network of professionals who are all striving for the growth of our city and beyond. Working tirelessly to provide a professional platform to build connections through celebrating Leicestershire, MIPIM 2017 is looking set to be the most exciting yet.

What it means to We have supported the Team Leicestershire delegation at MIPIM for a number of years and it has always proved a very worthwhile week to meet contacts and clients, and work with other professionals in the Leicester team to grow the profile of the city and county internationally. The hard work starts when you get back and convert the meetings into new instructions or new inward investment into Leicester but it has proved that it delivers results. This year, it will be good to see us being part of the wider Midlands Engine delegation, working together with other cities to maximise opportunities for the region. Richard Osborn, Weightmans

be a part of Team Leicester Being a part of Team Leicestershire at MIPIM gave us a platform to promote our business to a large number of companies. During the week in Cannes we were also able to build on the many long standing relationships that we have established over the years, as well as form many new ones. We have gained a higher profile and the ability to network with key businesses who we would not normally have met in Leicester. As part of Team Leicestershire we also hosted a number of hospitality events which were a great way to meet potential new clients and build on our networking group across the UK.

As a sponsor of Team Leicester, at MIPIM, we support and engage with the local business community. It’s our job, as a sponsor, to encourage those outside the region to invest in the city and demonstrate what it has to offer. We can invite guests from other regions and encourage business networking and raise our profile at Team Leicester sponsored events. Connecting with Birmingham and the East Midlands could also pay dividend for years to come. Attending MIPIM allows BSD to develop relationships formed since opening in Leicester two years ago. It will leave us enthused and excited about the future of BSD. Phil Pollard, BSD NICHE | 79

LEICESTERSHIRE

BID Sarah Thomson, Director of Strategic Partnerships, De Montfort University and Chris Stafford, CEO Curve Theatre are both very proud to be co-chairs of #BIDLEICESTER. Leicester has grown in statue and prominence and has found a new self-confidence but the journey is far from over. Leicester has the potential to be a top destination, not just for tourism and leisure but for retail, hospitality and business. A business improvement district (BID) is all about businesses working together to achieve their aims and enhance trading performance. The commitment and enthusiasm of the BID Steering

Doing business together Group comprising of individuals representing all sectors and sizes of businesses within the BID area - the inner ring road - has brought us to this point in the development of the BID. Now we wish to invite all businesses in the BID area to let us know their views and ideas on how a successful BID for Leicester can help keep up the momentum and attention the city has benefitted from. The BID model is both effective and robust which is borne out by over 200 established BIDs throughout the UK today. #BIDLEICESTER provides the opportunity for our businesses to work together to address the

challenges to growth over a five-year period. The BID is managed by the private sector and funded through a contribution of between 1%-1.5% of rateable value. Businesses are asked to vote on a Business Plan which has been crafted to reflect the needs of the city centre businesses identified through comprehensive consultation. Three main themes have emerged from our interaction with businesses to date which are: improving the customer experience, more effective marketing and business support and engagement. For more information please contact info@bidleicester.co.uk

What does the BID mean for business in the city... Curve is fully committed to supporting Leicester’s BID. We’ve seen how successful BIDs have had a significant impact in supporting the ambitions, growth and economic development of cities across the UK. Leicester is already a great city, I am confident that Leicester’s BID can make us even better. Chris Stafford, CEO Curve Theatre For me the BID is a no-brainer, I’m Leicester born and bred; I’ve travelled and worked over the world. I started 33CankStreet because I was frustrated by lack of variety of places to get a good cocktail and good service, I could have gone off to work in London but I wanted to 80 | NICHE

invest back into Leicester. The BID for me is about bringing together businesses that feel the same. By investing together we have more power to influence decisions and develop the city, more people living and visiting the city means better business. Kal Ruparell, 33CankStreet Owner Leicester has come a long way in the last few years but there is more to do. A BID would provide a valuable platform for Leicester to make the most of the opportunity it’s currently presented with and among other things, ensure talented young people stay in the area. The reality is that improving our city further costs money, but for a modest additional contribution from Leicester businesses working together we have the opportunity to make some

significant improvements for the benefit of all of us. Richard Osborn, Partner and Regional Office Head Midlands Real Estate, Weightmans LLP A successful BID in Leicester city centre gives a much needed voice to Businesses on the issues that matter locally. Leicester has had great success in the last few years and an increased footfall means that getting the environment right for our residents and visitors is more important than ever. The BID will only help with this and continue to ensure Leicester goes from strength to strength. After witnessing the positive roll out of BID’s across the country, I am excited to see the value the BID will add to our city. Rachelle Welsh - Local Business Manager, Santander

Guests can watch the short films, and then certificates will be presented to the young people involved in the creation of the films, who will be there with their families. Digital tax accounts an end to tax returns?

Family arbitration anyone?

Re-structuring an organisation

Back in March 2015, George Osbourne confirmed in his budget that Self Assessment Tax Returns would be replaced by Digital Tax Returns. This system will enable individuals and businesses to access their own tax records online, via PC, smartphone or tablet, and submit information on a quarterly basis, using real time information. Bank accounts will be linked to tax accounts and it will be possible to pay tax via direct debit or instalments.

What is it? Family arbitration is a form of out of court dispute resolution. A private arbitrator such as a Senior Barrister or Solicitor with special training is appointed by the husband and wife in a divorce case to ‘adjudicate’ on their case and to resolve it once and for all. Hearings can take place in your Solicitor’s offices or, for husbands and wives who no longer live in the same town, hired rooms in hotels can be used. The decision of the arbitrator is binding and will take effect as though it had been an order made by a Judge.

Unfortunately over the last few months I have been involved in several re-structuring projects for my clients. Sadly this has involved some redundancies which I have helped to keep to a minimal level.

Millions of taxpayers can already access their accounts by registering via the Government Gateway website. These individuals can access their personal tax information online via their own personal authentication code. Included in the information available is a taxpayer’s SA302 detail; the income and tax details of previous tax years. This is particularly relevant and useful now that banks are requesting more information to verify income before advancing mortgages. Those who pay tax via PAYE will have their income tax, national insurance and pension position shown in their digital accounts. HMRC will use information it holds, along with data from third parties (e.g. banks) to populate digital accounts. Taxpayers will still be able to authorise their accountants to manage their digital accounts. The Government hopes that by 2020, Self Assessment Tax Returns will be a thing of the past. Contact us for any help you need with your tax returns. Peter Morris 0116 242 3400 Torrwaterfield.co.uk 82 | NICHE

Why choose it? Arbitration can be used to resolve financial matters between divorcing couples and can also be used by parties to settle disputes regarding the arrangements for the children. Some parties prefer Arbitration as a form of dispute resolution over traditional court proceedings because it is often cheaper, quicker and more private than court proceedings. For example, wealthy business men and women and sport professionals will often not want to air their dirty laundry in public and share a public waiting area at court where they are likely to be recognised by other court users and so quite often these are the people who choose to arbitrate and agree to be bound by whatever decision the arbitrator makes. But increasingly, it is being used by ordinary people in ordinary cases who just want a quicker resolution to their divorce settlements than the court can offer. To learn more, contact one of our specialist Family solicitors today. Glynis Wright 0116 238 5680 Glyniswright.co.uk

Change is inevitable in any business, and if redundancies are necessary planning is crucial to comply with the law and also HR best practice. An employer should always consult with their employees before considering any redundancies. It is important that ‘no stone should be left unturned’ in an effort to avoid compulsory redundancies. Consultation can either be individual or collective. Consultation must begin in good time and must last for a period of at least 30 days if 20 to 99 employees are to be made redundant. If 100 or more employees are to made redundant a consultation period of at least 45 days should take place. An employer should administer a fair and consistent selection criteria when considering redundancies. This normally includes subject areas such as attendance records, disciplinary record, skills or experience, standard of work experience and aptitude for work. If an employee is selected for redundancy they are entitled to a notice period, and if they have two or more years’ service a statutory redundancy payment. For further advice please contact Atom HR. My will writing experience It’s time to detail the will and get it written up! Having left last time with a number of points to consider after talking to Owner Nick Foreman, I had made up my mind.

hopefully it will be relevant for the foreseeable.

Firstly, we recapped what Nick remembered from our last meeting. And then it was time for the nitty gritty. Who am I leaving things to? How do I want my estate left? Being engaged currently and wishing for different circumstances from the present day to when I am married, Nick was able to tell me about legal jargon: ‘in contemplation of marriage’. In layman’s terms, if I was to pass away today (God forbid) without a will, there is a pecking order which is used. This would automatically leave everything to my next of kin. This is not my wish so having the will is important. However, if

CASE STUDY: SALLY SMITH and when I marry, the pecking order would alter. My will would become invalid and I would have to begin this process again. Already knowing what I want now and after I am married means I can include the legal term to ensure my will still stands. Being able to write in the future has made this process simple and one that now means

Prior to starting this process I hadn’t considered what if I out-live the people in my will. With this being a possibility I have opted for a second choice of how I would wish to leave my estate. I have even gone as far as to add in my chosen charity to receive my estate if all else fails. This is unlikely but I now feel confident in any circumstances that my wishes will be carried out via my will. I have left Nick to write it all professionally. Look out for the next instalment...

“We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle” Sir Winston Churchill

National award from professional taxation body is just like receiving a BAFTA! It’s always nice to be appreciated for what we achieve in our working lives, so I was as pleased as a Chancellor with a budget surplus to receive an award from the Chartered Institute of Taxation, (CIOT) the leading professional body for tax in the UK. I’m proud and delighted to say that the Institute has honoured me with the CIOT Award of Certificate of Merit in recognition of my contribution to education and conference lecturing. As a corporate tax expert and CIOT member I lecture to accountants and lawyers all over the country, as well as locally as guest lecturer at De Montfort University. I’m a great supporter of the CIOT and the role the Institute plays in educating and informing people about how the UK tax system works. It’s rewarding to be involved and I enjoy serving on the institute’s education committee and on a number of its technical sub-committees. The Award of Certificate of Merit was introduced by the CIOT’s council in 2010 for both members and non-members who have played a significant role in the workings of the Institute. It’s a great honour and privilege to receive what is the CIOT’s equivalent of a BAFTA, and I’m particularly humbled to earn such recognition from my fellow tax professionals. The Miller Partnership looks forward to 2017 and to continuing to share its expertise and many years of experience with more businesses and their tax advisers – especially as we prepare for the challenges which lie ahead postBrexit, with the dawn of a new era in American, European and global politics. Last year’s ceremony gave us all a sparkling sample of things to come for the 2017 awards and this year’s

theme is yet to be revealed and will remain a mystery for the majority of the year (but don’t worry you’ll have enough time to sort your fitting outfits). presenting local companies big and small with accolades to celebrate their achievements and hard work, it’s also an excuse for a night of all round live entertainment from magicians to singers along with plenty of surprises along the way. Last year the audience was shocked with an unexpected fashion show brought together by a collaboration with Cross Productions, ModelZed Promotions, Betty Brown and Barrie Stephen Hair. What will Cross Productions come up with next? Of course we already know, but where’s the fun in telling! What we can say is that our offices are always buzzing with anticipation for our awards ceremony and this year will be the third of its kind and plans have created even more suspense. Those in Business have their say

Linking - a SEO concept that’s misunderstood

Telecommunications and motorsport

The brains behind the brand

Getting your business to appear higher on Google search results (aka Search Engine Optimisation or SEO) is a complex task, but link building is an essential element.

I founded Daly Systems in 1996 to supply, install and maintain business telecom systems with the objective of providing the highest quality products and levels of customer service. Twenty years on, we’ve seen enormous change, the convergence of telecoms into the IT arena, and Dalys’ expanding portfolio of products and services, reflects these changes; it has meant that the range of skills and expertise within Dalys has grown and strengthened. Our business partnership with telecommunication market leaders NEC gives us the opportunity to offer the most advanced call management solutions, giving our customers measurable benefits.

Wow, what a year! As a business, the goals we set out to achieve in 2016 were smashed; we have seen a steady stream of new clients, we’ve continued to delight our existing clients, we have invested in new presses and equipment to support the growth that we are enjoying, and we have won more awards!

Let’s bust a few misconceptions about linking that may explain why your business website isn’t performing as well as you’d like it to. 1. Getting to the top of Google is easy. It used to be, but not anymore. Competition has skyrocketed, but there’s still only one place up for grabs at the top of any Google search page. 2. More links are better. A link to your website from a highly respected site within your field can be worth a lot more than hundreds of poor quality links from irrelevant or untrustworthy sites. 3. SEO is just link building. Although links are critical, most experts agree they account for about one third of what Google factors in. There’s a lot more to consider. 4. Links are just for Google’s benefit. Reaching out to key influencers to request a link for your website could be the start of a great partnership. Building links could massively strengthen your brand and online presence, which is why we make it a priority for our clients.

Having invested in our billing platform, we give highly competitive prices on lines and calls, and direct access to the BT order portal speeds up line ordering and fault resolution. Add to that, IP surveillance, mobile packages, IT support, plus other services to support the day to day running of our clients’ businesses across the UK. We work with many multi-site organisations, as well as small independent businesses, schools and charities, solicitors and manufacturing companies.

What are your plans for 2017? Are you looking to the future and wanting to grow but aren’t sure how to achieve this? Did you achieve all you wanted to in 2016? If not, then maybe now is the time to have a look at the design of your company branding. Have you had the same branding for years while your business has changed and developed? Do the colours and style of your literature reflect your business values? Does your message really stand out from the crowd? We can help. We will spend time and listen to you, learn about your business, understand your customers and market place. We will offer free advice on how best to enhance your existing branding, or rethink things to highlight and enhance what you offer.

We are giving Niche Magazine readers exclusive access to some free SEO tools! Go to seotools.easyinternet.co.uk. Diana Esho

So, where does motorsport come in to the picture? That is my other passion, having raced Formula Ford for many years I have now qualified as an International Clerk of the Course. It enables me to stay involved at the sharp end of the sport, but without the physical stress of racing. Peter Daly

To us, design is the cornerstone of how your brand is perceived and we have been creating engaging designs for our clients for over 15 years. We are experts in our field and the passion for creating good design runs through us all. So let us help you make 2017 the year that you meet all your business objectives. Chris Goodman

Winners of last year’s Niche Business Awards Eco category, Soar Valley Press, took Niche team members along to an event they believe played a big part in their success at the September ceremony

Soar Valley Press leave their carbon neutral footprint at Heartwood Forest CO2 (carbon dioxide) is a natural gas that all plants and animals need. However, the cycle has altered and in turn our climate too through high levels of the gas being produced by manufacturing, transportation and the burning of fossil fuels. Newly planted trees absorb more CO2 than older trees (Forestry.gov.uk), which is why the tree planting days that Soar Valley Press take part in are so important.

The Carbon Capture Tree Planting Day at Heartwood Forest Hertfordshire in November run by Premier Paper Group was attended by over a hundred business people from across the country. Rather fittingly this is the fifth year of collaboration with the Woodland Trust and this specific anniversary is represented by wood. This initiative has resulted in 100,000 new trees over the years.

Brothers Chris and Dave Goodman are committed to providing an eco-friendly service by keeping a carbon-neutral footprint at the Soar Valley Press HQ. Their Carbon Capture Programme calculates the amount of carbon emissions generated in the production and delivery of paper. They then fund the planting of new native woodland to equal the CO2 used in the paper production.

The Soar Valley Press team consider their volunteer tree-planting escapades and other green efforts to be the reason the Niche Eco award sits proudly in their office. Along with companies from all over the UK, Chris and Dave took Niche’s excited Journalist, Kerry and Head of Sales, Sally to see what it was all about.

98 | NICHE

After breakfast and speeches, the team planted 5000 trees meaning

that volunteers planted an estimated 33 trees each! Between a lot of digging and playing with the furrier canine members of the volunteering team, there was fortuitous networking and team building to be had. After looking back at their rewarding work, it was back to base with hearty soup, bread, pasties and muffins. As you read this the young trees will be soaking up all that excess CO2 and in 20 years’ time will be put to good use as timber. For the past 15 years Soar Valley Press have been helping their clients communicate better with marketing, design, print and finishing solutions and expertise whilst making a positive difference to the environment. #LifesBetterWithTrees 0116 259 9955 Soarvalleypress.co.uk

A day in the life... ADT Taxis give Niche an exclusive insider into the daily life of a taxi driver

Being a taxi driver is easy – you take passengers from A to B, get your payment and on to the next job, right? Wrong. What about the guy who had one too many and became ill in your driver’s car last week? Or the one who exited before settling? Or the one who shouted abuse for taking him to the wrong destination after being given the wrong address? ADT Taxi’s office manager Darren Green, gives us an insight into the good and bad days a taxi driver can face. You may have had a bad experience in your time with a taxi firm but ADT told Niche how they kept their customers safe and on time throughout last year. “Each day is different to the next,” says the taxi-driver-turned-officemanager as he whizzes round the office of the high-end taxi firm. “I get in around 6am as I like to get a head start and go through all the emails, enquiries and check the latest feedback.” Once a customer has been dropped off at their destination, they can rate their

driver from one to five stars on the exclusive ADT app. Darren checks these regularly and if ever a driver were to regularly receive low stars, he’ll advise them and help check on the cars cleanliness and put training in place. “Compared to the amount of bookings we have, complaints are very low but we will always learn from and rectify any mistake and offer refunds and apologies. But with technology now, it’s very rare because I’m on call pretty much 24/7 so I can fix any problem in the office with bookings remotely from my desktop.” With latest technologies, ADT is always ahead of the game. Many corporate customers such as hotels and restaurants have the ‘Taxi Butler’; a button that with one simple press will despatch a driver to their destination freeing up precious time for receptionists, secretaries, and front of house staff. It also means that corporate clients are never left waiting and wondering if they’ll

I always advise my drivers to have the door locked and window down when a passenger approaches at night. make it to their meetings and social gatherings on time. Whilst Darren calmly dashes around the office as we catch up on Friday 16th December, he tells me that this weekend will be one of the busiest of the year. “There’ll be a lot of Christmas parties this weekend and throughout the whole company we’re pretty much solid already. But we always plan ahead throughout the year because anything could happen. Tonight, I have 10 staff taking calls you only need one to call in sick or one car to break down for it to throw everything out of balance, so we are always prepared for that meaning that customers are never affected.” The two Loughborough and four Leicester offices are all linked so that every member of staff knows each other and can see who is working and what job is on. Darren says they need to work as one big connected team and keep a good rapport going as everything has a knock-on effect and when things go wrong, they rely on each other for help.

Darren was once a taxi driver but after discovering he had a detached retina, had to surrender his driving license. While he misses his job on the road, he puts every effort into making sure his employees and customers are as happy as he was when he was on the job. “I always advise my drivers to have the door locked and window down when a passenger approaches at night. And if they’re not comfortable, they should explain that they’re not going to accept the travel if they’re acting drunk and aggressive. It’s down to their discretion, I’d rather know my drivers were safe and are avoiding situations that put them at risk.” Driver panic buttons will lock the entire system if an employee is in trouble and systems will not resume until the driver is safe and located through their GPS tracker. ADT also has a GPS tracker for passengers to feel safe as well. Ladies, gentlemen, children and parents can always feel safe with the use of the app.

Darren explains: “I had a call from a parent just yesterday saying she loved the app because she booked her taxi and got a text with the make of the car, the drivers name and ETA, she was also happy she could see where her child was in the car from the GPS tracker. There’s a lot of taxis out there that aren’t registered but with ADT, you’ll know that a silver Toyota Prius reg number ‘xxx’ is coming to pick you up and be assured that they are a registered legal driver with proper training and experience.” Darren will finish his day around 4pm but he will be on hand for the rest of the night to be there for his drivers and clients. Download the ADT app so that you’re always guaranteed a safe and enjoyable journey. 0116 255 5222 Adt-taxis.co.uk

2016: The Year of the Underdog Across the world in 2016 there have been a number of surpise results: victories for both Brexit and Donald Trump may well have the biggest effect on world affairs in due course but here in Leicester the year will remembered forever for the biggest sporting underdog sory of all time. Leicester City’s Premier League title, famously at odds of 5000-1, was the nearest thing to a sporting miracle that anyone has ever witnessed and that achivement has been underlined by individual awards for both Jamie Vardy (Sports Writers’ Footballer of the Year) and Riyad Mahrez (PFA Player of the Year). As the year drew to a close, those individuals were again on the receiving end. Vardy was named a the year’s eighth best player in the prestigious Ballon d’Or poll, while Mahrez ended up in seventh place in that particular vote and also picked up the BBC African Player of the Year title. For good measure, Shinji Okazaki was named International Asian Player of the Year. Who in Leicester ever dreamed of such achievements from the boys in blue? 102 | NICHE

Elsewhere, some of Leicester’s other underdogs will be looking towards 2017 to do their part. At Grace Road, those particular Foxes are still stuggling to find a winning combination that will lift them into the upper reaches of Division Two in the County Championship and into the later stages of one of the oneday competitions. Summer success seems overdue at the Fischer Cricket Ground. It is quite a similar story with the Lions in the British Speedway League. For them it has again proved difficult to assemble a truly competitive squad this time. Much of the fans’ interest in 2016 was heavily focussed on the individual World Championship, where former Lions’ skipper Jason Doyle looked set to add another chapter to the gripping underdog tale when moving into the lead in the Grand Prix series with just three meetings remaining. Sadly, injuries that were sustained in a bad fall brought Doyle’s campaign to a premature end but hopes remain high for 2017, so watch this space.

Leicester Riders cannot be regarded as underdogs in the British Basketball League but they continue to battle hard to nudge Newcastle Eagles out of the number one ranking. There is always plenty of excitement to be had at the new Leicester Community Sports Arena and Rob Paternostro’s squad are certain to continue their challenge in 2017. The story of Leicester Tigers in 2016 is perhaps the hardest to pin down. The club is clearly not quite at the same level as in recent years while still challenging for a top four place in the Premiership. The draw in the European Champions Cup has not been particularly kind in the last two seasons either, nor has the injury situation in 2016. Funds have been made available for ground redevelopment and Welford Road continues to be one of the most impressive rugby stadiums in the country. Hopefully 2017 will see the team recapture their spark on the field and become true title contenders once more. Dave Smith

Get Busy Living Centre for injury rehab

Fun and flexibility for tots too

Here at the Leicester Racecourse we have an exciting array of events for you to get involved with. With something to suit all the family, save the date for the events that take your fancy.

As an ambassador for the Matt Hampson Foundation I am overjoyed to announce that the much-talked about Get Busy Living Centre will be up and running this year!

Here’s what’s on: 29 APR 2017 KING RICHARD III STAKES GENTLEMEN’S DAY As well as a great day of racing we have live music from the one and only Madness Tribute Band ‘Los Palmas 6’ which features Steve Turner who played live with Madness for eleven years as the sax player and support vocals. Live entertainment will be in an indoor arena which is close to the racing and has plenty of indoor cover, bars and seating, so don’t worry if the weather is not on our side!

It’s taken a lot of hard work volunteered by local companies to develop the £1 million rehabilitation facility for those who have suffered catastrophic injury through sport. The huge project was made possible by many local partners who offered their time, services, materials and expertise all for free. Companies, from construction experts Willmott Dixon to marketing agency Cartwright Communications, have turned Matt Hampson’s dream into a real life triumph.

Oadby Gymnastics invite you and your under four’s to have fun, gain greater co-ordination, improve balance and get active. Gymnastics offer a great deal of benefits to young people including greater flexibility, increased confidence and a host of co-ordination skills which all contribute to happy, healthier children and who doesn’t want that?

My good friend set up his foundation after suffering a lifechanging accident during a training session in 2005. He now helps those who have had a similar injury by offering support and assistance. And now, his Get Busy Living Centre is seeing a derelict aircraft hangar in Melton Mowbray transformed into a state-of-theart facility where people can get physical rehabilitation, spend time with their families and share experiences with those in a similar situation. Matt has been incredibly grateful for the generosity of the project partners and is looking forward to being able to offer the opportunities for beneficiaries to sample life-changing technology without the astronomical costs. Louis Deacon Matthampsonfoundation.org

We think the merits of gymnastics can be enjoyed from way before structured classes at four years old and that’s why we started our new parents and tots gymnastics club on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The doors are open from 10-11am for structured play, this involves music and movement and goes towards their pre-school ABC award which stands for Active, Balance and Co-ordination. The afternoon session, 1-2pm, is more of a free style play where the tots can play in the fun pit, run about on the matted and padded play things and equipment in safety burning some of that energy positively. Both sessions offer plenty of opportunity to run and play with a coffee machine and comfortable area for the parents to meet and socialise with each other too. Sessions are pay as you play – there’s no need for booking or signing up just drop in, come see us and have fun! Jon Mutch 07813 205 852 Olgc-gymnastics.co.uk NICHE | 103

Those in Sport have their say

The horse of a lifetime International showjumping star Holly Smith tells Niche she’s moving onwards and upwards after her sad goodbye to the horse who galloped her to an international stage Holly Smith (nee Gillott) is a rising star on the showjumping circuit, representing her country on a global platform. Dedicated, talented, and ambitious are just a few words that encapsulate this young lady who is mature way beyond her 27 years, and she says it’s all thanks to a horse named Dougie Douglas. Holly’s hunger for showjumping didn’t exist until four-year-old Dougie arrived. Their relationship sparked a passion in Holly that led her to quit university to carve a career with the young horse. They spent more years together than the average rider and steed, and experienced great things during their companionship. But it would come to an end when Holly knew she had to give Dougie up to continue in her career. The business-minded showjumping success runs Holly Gillott Showjumping and since her farewell to the fairytale horse, she has been training hard and preparing for a big year of international competitions for 2017. She airs the reality behind the elegance of a demanding equestrian lifestyle.

At what point did your passion for the equine world blossom? Horses have always been a part of my life since I can remember. My mother Amanda rode competitively so we had horses around the family home. I began to ride at a young age and had a proper Pony Club upbringing. Where in the world has riding taken you? I represented team GB at the Nations Cup League all over Europe and the UK. I’ve also taken a string of horses over to the sunshine tour the last few years as well as other international competitions to gain valuable FEI points and mileage at international 5* competitions. Let’s talk about Dougie, this is the horse that took you to 5* Nations Cup, do you think you’d be where you are today without him? We sourced Doug as a four year old from the Gorsebridge sales and it wasn’t until he arrived we began to think he was something special. We developed and grew our partnership as we rose up through the rankings from novice to 5* level. I owe Doug for building my profile up in the sport and the wealth of experience we gained together; he is as they say, ‘the horse of a life time.’

How did you feel having to let him go? The sale of Dougie Douglas was a business decision to empower my career with longevity, the financial benefits of selling him has given my company Holly Gillott Showjumping the resources to improve my Leicestershire equine base, invest into young horse power for the future, and given me time to produce the string of horses I have at present. What is your proudest moment to date? I have a few proud moments but the one that means the most to me has to be being called up to represent your country at 5* level, which is something I couldn’t have done without Doug. As a business owner, what’s your next career move? After the sale of Dougie Douglas last year I’ve taken the time to focus on the horses I have right now. I’ll be taking these away over to Europe to compete on the international circuit. I’d like to see what opportunities may arise from new owner’s wanting to places their horses with me. Thank you Dougie Douglas.

Creator and original presenter of BBC Radio 1’s Dance Anthems Dave Pearce, famous for his legendary bigroom sets featuring trance, electro and progressive house entwined with reworked masterpieces, will follow the influential Aswad with some epic anthems lined up to see in the sunset. Fancy street food and unique beverages will be on offer around the racecourse where race-goers and music fans can indulge in craft beers, Prosecco, gourmet and artisan pizzas, fries, donuts, burgers, paella and a host of other cuisines from around the world. “We’re bringing a brand new event to the Racecourse this summer – The Leicester Dance Fest. Excitement is already building, and with some of the best names in the industry present, we know this will be a top seller!” Rob added. Rob is also excited to announce the headlining act at this year’s Ladies Day, which is increasingly growing in terms of popularity and hype, ‘Never Ever’ and ‘The Beach’ singers All Saints! Last year was the biggest Ladies Day yet, drawing a record crowd of over 11,000. Rob believes having one of the most popular girl bands of the 90s will drum up an even bigger audience. The awardwinning group released Red Flag last April, their first album since 2006, and have recently embarked on their first tour in 15 years. After revealing the girls will also be performing some of their hits from

Those in Sport have their say

Throwing in the towel Boxing is a joke now. At the time of print in December, we had Anthony Joshua defending the world title against someone who can’t last three rounds. Boxers are not fighting their best fights because there is too much money in the sport. It’s all about how much money the promoters can make now, not about the challenge and quality of the fight. This is what I realised when I became a world champion and why I walked away. No one wanted to fight me. This is what a lot of boxers go through now. You go through the learning stage, work your way to a certain level and it gets you so far until you end up in the money system. I was a boxer because I enjoyed it but there was no challenge anymore, I’d lost the drive, and on top of that it’s a sport where you can get seriously hurt so for me it just wasn’t worth it anymore. The greed involved within the industry had taken away from boxing what I loved about it and the exciting challenges that came with it. Aside from building my empire of a gym and working at my day job Triple Skillz Sports, which encourages young people to change their lives, I have been putting all my energy into body building and will be competing in April. I still need to put on more size ‘til then but this is what drives me now. Rendall Munroe tripleskillz.co.uk 108 | NICHE

A European Tour As we reach the halfway point of the season there is no doubt about the direction that the story of Leicester City has taken. While league form has been patchy, the focus this term has been about us all going on a European tour. Some will claim the draw for the group stages was kind. Certainly in terms of accessability, the cities of Bruges, Copenhagen and Porto have all been wonderful locations for the fans to visit and many happy memories have been forged for the travelling Blue Army. The fact that the Foxes managed to defy the odds and qualify for the knockout stages with a game to spare did no harm to the mood either. The final fixture, in Portugal, gave Claudio Ranieri the opportunity to rest some key squad members and, while the resulting scoreline was not what everyone wanted, that decision was vindicated three days later when the best performance of the season saw City trounce Manchester City in the Premier League with a showing that was reminiscent of last season. The draw for the round of 16 in the Champions League has paired the Foxes with Sevilla, the winners of the Europa League in each of the last three seasons. Yet again a perfect draw for the travelling fans with the prospect of temperatures in the high teens in late February and a city full of culture and interest to explore. City will go into this tie as underdogs, despite being the seeded group winners, but this still appears to be the ‘age of the outsider’ so who knows what will ultimately be in store. Regardless of the result, this has been a European tour to savour for everyone. Dave Smith

The pathways to excellence Dyslexia made life tougher in my early years. But then I was introduced to Zing Performance, which changed my life at 36! It’s the only brain development company that has the ability to regrow our brains neural pathways. This is the foundation of how we learn skills from public speaking to Maths, to helping with stress and anxiety making us relaxed and in control of our rational thoughts and decisions. Our front brain takes in information and processes it to our back brain; the cerebellum (our hard drive), which is 100,000 times faster than our front brains. Our brains development is active from birth to seven years. If we’ve developed good neural pathways we become natural and instinctive, if not, we will never become natural in a certain skill. Zing Performance asks you to complete a 25 minute assessment online then designs your very own personalised program: two physical and mental daily exercises, which stimulate the correct areas of your neural pathways to create new ones to your cerebellum. After every 2-5 min exercise, you rate its difficulty and the program adapts to suit your brain’s needs. The six month program has money back guarantee if you complete 70 per cent and feel no positive results. It’s helped children and world champions – amazing how an app can change your life. Give it a try and see a change in yourself! Paul Nixon Zingperformance.com/zfns

“One of best comedy festivals in the world” The Guardian Leicester Comedy Festival will take over streets, bars, cafes, hotels and venues across Leicester and Leicestershire for the 24th consecutive year, making it the longest running comedy festival in Europe. The 19-day festival runs from 8th – 26th February 2017 and features over 770 shows across more than 60 venues. Highlights for 2017 include Jimmy Carr, Johnny Vegas, Ken Dodd, Richard Herring, Stewart Lee, Sue Perkins, James Acaster, Adam Buxton’s Bug: David Bowie Special, Sarah Millican as part of Standard Issue Magazine in Conversation, an exclusive interview with Romesh Ranganathan, Tom Lucy (Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year winner 2016) and Richard Gadd and Scott Gibson (lastminute.com Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2016 winners). As well as big TV names Leicester Comedy Festival is increasingly seen as the place to spot new comedic 112 | NICHE

flair. Geoff Rowe, Founder and Director of the Leicester Comedy Festival, said: “The variety of performances and unique events that take place throughout Leicester Comedy Festival makes it the best place for seeing huge comedy stars and the chance to spot rising talent. Nurturing new voices in comedy is crucial to the festival’s success, and one which is celebrated at the end of the festival each year, with the prestigious Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year competition.” The festival also celebrates the classic British pun with the annual UK Pun Championships, this year taking place at De Montfort Hall on Monday 13th February. The festival is not just for young folk; for several years the festival has championed comedians aged over 55, with the Silver Stand Up competition. This competition has grown to become a significant national competition and is supported by comedians including Pam Ayres, Jasper Carrot, Alexei Sayle and Bruce Forsythe. There are

plenty of different types of shows to take in, including the expanded Beyond A Joke programme of seminars and discussions that explore contemporary issues in comedy. Many of these seminars are free and will include speakers including Mrs Barbara Nice, Sarah Millican and Romesh Ranganathan. Special programmes include the Leicester Fridge which returns for a 3rd year and The BIG Weekends return to Loughborough and Melton, where we present a taste of the main festival in both towns. The Tiger Roar with Laughter Fringe, takes place in Everards pubs across Leicester and Leicestershire and features some amazing comedians and VERY special guests. So, there is plenty to choose from. A baby,

a podcast and a narcissistic comedian GRILLED: Comedian and star of the podcast that reveals the inner workings of his fellow comics, Stuart Goldsmith, on his own happiness He’s the comedian who has it all, and now that he has a baby, he can tick off the box at the top of his checklist and finally share the joys of fatherhood in the middle of a very cushtie life in the 21st century when his show ‘All the Time in the World’ comes to Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival Saturday 11th February. “As a narcissistic comedian whose life was very nicely set up where I didn’t have to work too hard, the baby has absolutely smashed that off the table! So part of the show is definitely me not being the main character anymore in my own life,” Stuart told Niche. The happy-go-lucky comic has delivered fantastic shows including ‘Compared to What’, which he will be touring later this year, but he has brought more to the domestic table than just this by changing the way we view comedians as he tears away at the front they protect themselves with on his podcast ‘The Comedian’s Comedian’. He’s quizzed and cross-examined the likes of Jimmy Carr, Bill Burr, and unearthed the unhappiness behind the Russell Howard trademark smile.

Since starting the show five years ago, it’s become a favourite of Ricky Gervais who when goaded into being on the show remarked ‘when I’m ready’, proving the power of Stuart’s interviewing technique that can really hit a few emotional nerves. “When I started the show it was definitely ‘how do you write your jokes?’ and it gradually morphed into ‘how do you write your jokes and how do you cope?’ and now it’s mostly ‘who are you really and how do you cope, oh and how do you write your jokes?’” laughed Stuart. When asked about the interviewers own happiness he said: “I am by no means a trained therapist in any way but I’ve been through therapy myself and I think whenever anyone is going to delve into anyone else’s psyche, they should probably have some sort of a grip on their own problems. “The internal therapy one does as a comedian or any self-employed creative, we’re constantly having to go ‘should I be doing this, is this really for me, what about last night’s bad gig?’, and it can be an intense vortex and doing the podcast has

proved to be a real catalyst for happiness in my own life.” Stuart’s recognised that the people he considers naturally talented incredible successes are as hard-working as anyone else after seeing the trauma they suffer from themselves and that he now feels ‘a little bit less alone’ because of this. And so, it turns out, have many other comedians who have been inspired to commit to stand-up comedy because of The Comedian’s Comedian. He has a list of 40+ comics who have emailed to be on the show after gaining the confidence to take a stab at stand up because of the podcast. In the future, Stuart’s next checklist has a box for Jackie Chan waiting to be ticked off, but of course not before he’s scrutinised Gervais, “Come on Ricky, get on the show – you know how to get in touch with me!” See Stuart this February at The Criterion.

The life of a

classical composer Reviving Panufnik Remarkable stories were heard by our Niche team when we took a trip to the home of Scottish born 74 year old composer Martin Dalby The cultural city of Glasgow called our Niche girls to its beautiful streets this October to visit our favourite classical composer Martin Dalby. It was a pleasure to finally meet the former BBC Radio 3 producer (once named Music Programme) esteemed for his work within the corporation. We’ve written about his life and achievements many times in Niche Magazine so the visit to his Glasgow home was a natural development of our working relationship. Our girls Sally and Leanne headed for the hills to interview the prolific composer for the first ever documentary put into production by our publishing house Cross 114 | NICHE

Productions. The documentary reveals touching moments and uncovers Martin’s most emotional strifes including the struggles he faced on his journey to become a composer and the realisation that his work had always been taken seriously by his peers. Hear the stories of the travelled composer who encouraged and motivated so many musicians and composers during his time at the BBC and beyond. Find this insightful documentary into the life of a wonderful leading composer on the website.

Martin-dalby.co.uk

Martin told a story of one of the many times he revived, challenged and inspired musician’s careers taking them to new heights. “After I joined the BBC in London I was allocated an office and from its window we could watch them build the post office tower. Every day we would make a mark on the wall to see how far up it had got and we had just done that when the telephone rang. It was the radio 3 press officer and he said ‘a terrible thing has happened… Panufnik (Andrzej, a Polish composer and conductor) has called rather distressed saying that somebody calling himself Martin Dalby has rung him to offer him a broadcast!’ And I said well I wouldn’t worry about that because I did ring. He said ‘you couldn’t have, the BBC doesn’t ring Panufnik!’ But I did! I’d been told to do it by the boss and Panufnik started being barred - I never knew why but as a result of that I fulfilled the request from my boss and did a programme on him and there after we became very close friends and I did a lot of Panufnik’s music and got rid of the bar on it!”

Nocturnal Animals

What’s on a Vue

The 2017 awards season kicks off on January 8th with the Golden Globes. For those of us who like to try and catch all the films in the running before the Oscars, I’ve managed to nail down my Film of the Year 2016. Nocturnal Animals is the second film from Tom Ford, whose titanic fashion empire included the revival of Gucci, a couture presence at YSL and his own eponymous ultra high end label. Ford’s style is an emphatic and almost unconscious part of everything he touches.

A brilliant ballet triptych and a comic classic from Pinter are just some of the fantastic events being brought to the big screen by Vue Leicester in the New Year. The upcoming line-up includes Woolf Works, a brilliant triptych for The Royal Ballet choreographed by Wayne McGregor. The multi-award winning choreographer combines themes from three of Woolf’s landmark novels - Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves - with elements of her letters, essays and diaries. Acclaimed British composer Max Richter (Infra, Sum and Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons) creates a specially commissioned score incorporating electronic and live music.

His directorial debut A Single Man, a tender portrayal of grief adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s novel, garnered an Oscar nomination for Colin Firth in the lead role, and Ford’s vision and style resonated throughout that inaugural cinematic production. ‘Overly stylised’ is a criticism thrown at Ford in Nocturnal Animals and, for me, this is unfair: like asking a badger to avoid being seen as ‘too black and white’. The story of Edward and Susan, previously married whilst students, is both mirrored and obfuscated by Edward’s ‘great novel’ Nocturnal Animals a tale of terror, menace and the horrifying consequences of a family road trip through West Texas. The novel is dedicated to Susan whose beautiful life, dedicated to art, seems empty and fragmented. As a study of masculinity and guilt, emotional disconnection and visceral fear, this film packs a real punch with powerhouse, possibly award winning, performances from both major and minor players. As seen at Phoenix. Tracey Miller traceyannmiller@hotmail.com 116 | NICHE

Johnny Carr, Alternative Content Manager at Vue UK and Ireland, commented: “Our live and event cinema showings continue to be hugely popular. We take pride in providing our customers with the best seat in the house for a host of sought-after shows and we don’t just feature acting brilliance. In January we are also showing encores of the glorious revival of Pinter’s comic classic, NT Live: No Man’s Land starring Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. The play follows the tales of two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner who meet in a Hampstead pub.As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game.”

What IS a limited edition print A question we get asked a lot, hope this helps! When a published artist produces a painting it’s submitted to the publishers who then decide which pieces go to print, which are sold as originals painting only and which if any are rejected. It is then decided how many will be printed in the edition. Recently, we have seen this number reduce from several hundreds to sometimes a low a single figure. The smaller the edition size, the more collectable a piece is. Limited editions will have a number near the signature. It may look like 43/150. In this case it would be number 43 of an edition size of 150. Occasionally there are a number of AP’s or artist proofs released. Usually 10% of the edition size. Some collectors like the prestige of owning an AP, if two prints were for sale and one was an AP I would choose the AP. The original to a print is always highly desirable, these pieces are usually sold fairly quickly. Each print comes with a certificate of authenticity. This is signed by the artist and the publishers to say that it is a true copy, numbered with number matching the number on the painting and the title.

Leicester’s Vue cinema can be found at Meridian Leisure Park.

Another trend recently is for the artist to hand embellished the print, this gives the print a real feel of the original adding texture and movement. Sara Lovatt

It’s all in the

Historic manor to open its doors to the public for the first time in centuries this year The Grade II listed 17th century home, which was once a chapel, holds many secrets within its walls. The manor can be found on the edge of the Charnwood Forest nestled amongst many mature trees, surrounded by stunning formal gardens tipped with natural woodland, which an abundance of creatures call home. Steeped in history and retaining its grand staircase, wood paneled walls and dining room carvings of Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh, all the little details contribute to the mystical house that is full of stories and walls who have seen and heard a thing or two. The manor has been added to over the centuries, with residents creating their own spectacular architectural additions each time, the last of which was almost a third of the building by Judge Joyce in the 1900s. Anthony and Sarah Kurr are the most recent in the historical line of Abbots Oak Manor owners who saw a rare opportunity to once again breathe life into the quintessentially English home. Involving all local companies and people to help with the restoration and have forged deals with local farmers and merchants for food and drinks. Both enchanting and fascinating in equal measures, the property has unearthed a host of surprises as the new owners lovingly restored it over the last three years, including a sealed off section of the cellar beneath the chapel. The little details which have been respectfully restored include that all important grand staircase, which

is said to be taken from the Pall Mall home of Nell Gwyn, mistress of King Charles II, and placed at Abbots Oak creating a London escape for the lovers. Talking of lovers, the beguiling manor is taking bookings for weddings in 2017. The romantic house, with its five bed and breakfast rooms, can play host to one of the biggest days in your life within its captivating setting. Have your Lady Mary moment as you make your entrance down the grand staircase or enjoy a drink by the fire with your groomsmen in the perfectly momentous setting. Whilst the property oozes historical charm, the service and welcome is anything but stuffy and ancient with the hosts keen to ensure a comfortable, inviting feel. Anthony and Sarah have always sought the assistance of local services from renovators to food suppliers and catering experts, most notably a partnership with award winning Dimblebee Catering. It really is the most perfect setting for christenings, corporate events, gourmet food nights and overnight stays. The long and illustrious history of this special manor house is what makes it so fascinating. Enjoy this special, unique environment which is crying out to be experienced in all its glory once again. As the Chair of the Parent Association at Our Lady’s Convent School, which encourages pupils to engage with parents and decisions made at the school, Diana set out to involve the schoolgirls and their friends and families in the ‘Your Smalls’ enterprise by inspiring them to raid their drawers for old bras that can be sent over to support women in crisis in Gambia. In just two shipments since the project began, over 1000 bras have been delivered to women of all ages in Gambia. The bras are shipped out to The Wullingkamma Nursery and Lower Basic School and Medical Centre, which Diana and husband Mark have flown out to visit. Facebook: YourSmallsAppeal NICHE | 121

Bespoke Travel Wave goodbye to DIY holidays and take a trip to Millington Travel agency When the internet came along, it spelled the end for over 95 per cent of the independently owned travel agencies in the UK. Only the few very best ones survived, and that included Millington Travel, who had been around in Leicester for over 40 years. The reasons they continue not only to survive but thrive are very simple. Not everyone wants to spend chunks of their precious leisure time playing at being a travel agent, getting lost and confused in front of a computer. They would rather pay a little bit for a well-travelled expert to create their perfect holiday, know they are completely financially protected, and know who to turn to should they encounter any problems while they are away. In fact the majority of the time Millingtons can match or do even better than internet prices, so their

customers get all that great service AND save money on their holiday. In the last couple of years Millington Travel have expanded rapidly across the county and beyond, always careful to select the best, highly qualified staff, who have an enthusiasm and love for all things travel. Last year saw the opening of branches in Loughborough, Nuneaton and Kettering, this year they have added Melton Mowbray, and most recently Market Harborough. The demand for a professional travel service, somewhere people can go to discuss their travel needs over a cup of coffee with an expert appears to be everywhere, and Nigel Armitage, joint Managing Director of the group sees no foreseeable slowdown in the rapid rate of expansion.

“We have our successful business model, and that is built around our independence to offer the widest possible choice of products and by recruiting or training the best teams of staff.” Nigel commented, “People do not have time in their busy lives for the do-ityourself online holiday, they like the assurance we provide that everything has been arranged thoroughly and professionally.” Millington branches can be found on Humberstone Road, Market Street and Halford Street in Leicester city centre. They are also in Syston, Melton Mowbray, Loughborough, Lutterworth, Kettering, Market Harborough and Nuneaton.
