A Word from the Editor
It’s the glorious high summer in Leicestershire and, so far so good! We’ve been a busy team over at Niche Magazine and there’s no sign of our frantic social lives easing up any time soon. May saw us launch the Cross Connections Expo with critical applause from attendees and exhibitors alike, keep the date free for 2018’s addition to the business calendar already, May 16th. You’ll also see we had a swell time at the Great Leicestershire Charity Celebration Ball, where a community pulled together and raised crucial funds for ten local charities, all so deserving. Thank you to all who attended, donated and supported, it really does make a difference. The main event and what’s been keeping us busy in the past few weeks is the Niche Business Awards, now in its third year this is finding its own with record numbers of nominations. We’re now planning the finale 8th September, expect a grand show, we kind of set the bar so high in the last two years. Book a room, arrange your transport – this is where I plug a mention for Hotel Maiyango and ADT Taxis right? In any case book your seats via eventbrite.co.uk Speaking of Maiyango, this ground-breaking dining den in Leicester will be closing its doors very soon for a mysterious refurb to a concept dining restaurant, this we can’t wait to enjoy having followed the prosperous progress of the business for the last 12 years. Have you experienced the quintessential English pub garden so far this year? If you’re in need of a sun trapped, beer filled, BBQ haven then you should venture over to Steamin’ Billy’s ‘The White Bear’ in Hinckley. This latest addition to the publican’s growing portfolio has an outside space of suitable revere. Abbots Oak, tucked away in north west Leicestershire, also has great grounds for exploring on the edge of Charnwood Forest this newly renovated manse is now taking bookings for some of the most beautiful events in Leicestershire. We also welcome some amazing new businesses to our publication, take Iosys, an IT business that is ready to save you time and money with all things digital. And here’s hoping we can use the great new app from Capacity when looking for a place to party locally, it’s so clever, letting users know if their selected destination is too busy to cope with extra custom. So, all in all, we have to say Leicestershire is a hive of activity. We hope you enjoy the pages within our July/August edition. We’ll be back in September to bring you the best of the summer that was.

Learn to Love the emotional man For a very long time women have campaigned for equality and acceptance in all walks of life
A
s society has evolved, a lot of support and ‘air time’ is given to support females in just about everything, but what about the men? Whilst the female is revered in many religions, worshipped and cosseted, what about men? You don’t often hear of men kicking off or protesting. Maybe it’s because they know or think their voice doesn’t matter. To admit they are depressed or can’t cope is soul destroying. Suicide rates among young men are the highest they have been for years. Children come into this world with no preconceived ideas or imprints. The parents and extended family are responsible for the relationship field that is created around the child and imprints start to be projected at them, which could be from their own life experiences or cultural beliefs. In some cultures girls are nothing more than burdens, in other societies they are taught to aim for the best, be the best, reach for the stars and not to settle for second best. It’s a different story for men. Boys are taught and expected to be
tough, avoid emotion, avoid tears and be doers, hunter, and gatherers. A male life goes something like this: Go to school, stand up for yourself if you are picked on. Do well, study hard, go to university, be as qualified as you can. Get a decent job with good prospects and salary. At the same time find a loving relationship. Have children and support their partner and children. Somewhere along the line he loses himself, unable to feel or show emotions. Unfortunately, we as wives and partners are just as guilty as the parents for creating this persona. There is a profound sadness in observing the breakdown of a man’s soul and sometimes the damage is so great that it’s hard to come back from. In my work I meet ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ men who hurt and feel the same but express differently. My aim is to provide a safe space, where there is no judgement or expectation. I also talk to my female clients about how it is ok and important to support the men in their lives without feeling threatened or vulnerable themselves.
If a woman becomes overwhelmed and she reacts, society accepts her reaction while men are expected to soldier on. I encourage all men to have an understanding of themselves and their traits first and foremost, empowering them to realise that sensitivity is a gift and a strength. In my own personal life I have encountered the man who bears his soul, shares and talks and the one that hides behind the wall, the man who is allowed to be sensitive is the man who meets you halfway every time, the man who can’t express is the man who you feel lets you down and doesn’t understand you. We can all do our little bit to change that. Allow the boys and men in your life to speak honestly, openly and express, start the dialogue from a very early age and you will see how sublime and innocent their thoughts really are. On the merry go round of life we forget to offer our loved ones space to express, grow, pray, love, and to just be. 07795 361 288 priticoles.co.uk

P
upils were allocated a shop to visit and get to grips with their branding in order to create an advert that promoted the business effectively. The students visited luxury beauty retailer Amelia Nour, bespoke dress maker Betty Brown, custommade furniture designer in-haus, women’s footwear trader Kiki & Fleur, Abiti Ladieswear, Tin Fish Shoes, Curran Interior Design, hair salon Christopher Wright, Artifact Card and Gift Shop, and Flowers Sweet & Savvy. “The students had an opportunity to see from a shop owner’s perspective what it’s like to run a boutique and all of the skills required. My favourite part was the relaxing session we had at Amelia Nour where we showed the girls how to meditate and make a face mask!” Meesha commented. The project organisers Meesha Kanadia, owner of Amelia Nour, and Eleni Kostarigka, creator of EKlearning workshops, put together activity sheets on ethicics, slogans, visuals, and gave advice on dealing with stress and DIY health and beauty tips. The pupils discovered what made each company distinctive and headed back to school to design an advert for their allocated shop. Eleni said: “I was pleased to see the students being inspired and overcoming challenges, like speaking to people, designing and coming up with ideas.” You can find the deserving winner’s advert on the Niche Magazine blog. In the summertime
Get the Arbonne glow
Happy summer! Many of us are off on our holidays to hot paradise islands, busy and bustling foreign cities and exotic locations. It’s all well and good planning our holiday hair styles but when it comes to it, all you want to do is chuck it up in a messy bun! And that’s completely fine. So, let’s talk the hair colours you can go for this season to keep your laidback styles looking a little more glamorous.
The ‘Arbonne Glow’ is much sought after and there’s no fountain of youth that us Arbonne Consultants all drink from - honestly. All we do is practise what we preach through good nutrition and incorporating the Arbonne wellbeing supplements and skin care products into our daily life.
For lighter hair, shadowed roots are going to be huge this season. Natural depth in the hair enriches the skin tone; low-maintenance and very flattering. Using a naturally darker colour on your roots than the ends will create that grown-out root look whilst looking much more polished and wearable. The contrast of the dark roots to the lighter ends will look gorgeous in an up-do or a messy bun! Blonde hair never goes out of style, but different shades fade in and out of popularity. The tone of the moment is nude. Unlike the honey and buttery blondes of last season, nude combines warm and cool tones together, which cancel each other out to create a neutral colour. Nude blonde is easy to wear and looks incredible with your a tan! If you don’t fancy a hair colour make-over this summer, but still want gorgeous hair for your holidays, head into your favourite Barrie Stephen Hair salon for a gloss treatment to give you a gorgeous and enhanced shine, boosting dull and lifeless hair and leaves it looking healthy, revitalised and silky-smooth. Barrie Stephen 0116 402 6222 barriestephenhair.co.uk
I was lucky enough to visit Buckingham Palace for a lovely garden party recently and I have never felt better sporting a Ted Baker dress, inspired by the John Lewis stylist at a recent Alex’s Wish charity event. Not only that but people were complimenting me on my skin and glow and I know it’s down to the Re9 skin care and the mineral oil free spf15 moisturiser and foundation. I always take the probiotics too which meant I could thankfully ditch the spanks that I used to reach for. Now, I am bloat-free and comfortable enough to wave those stunners goodbye! To keep my energy up on the day I had a fizz stick which contains antioxidants, B vitamins and chromium and I kept hunger at bay whilst we awaited our meal with a protein shake which has more than 20 essential vitamins and minerals per serving. The Arbonne Glow is no secret, you can get it too and FYI it’s not just for Buckingham Palace…it’s for life! Bev Sankey

Semi-permanent makeup provides the ultimate holiday makeup solution ensuring you look effortlessly put together as you relax pool side this summer.
The award-winning Beau Aesthetica clinic in Stoneygate Leicester has just recently celebrated 10 years since opening their doors and in that time, they have provided the very latest in semi-permanent makeup. FRACTORA
Restoring your skin Leicester GPs have closed the gap between high street remedies and NHS medication for cosmetic treatments from head to toe – this issue we focus on youthful skin
D
r Sumit Virmani and Dr Gunjan Bedi’s clinic, MediSkin Care on Thornton Lane, Markfield was formed to help those who have been turned away when seeking NHS assistance for complaints that are often considered cosmetic. Men and women are clutching on to their youth and striving for perfect skin now more than ever. A British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) study found that 7,419 people underwent facial plastic surgery in 2015 making it the third most popular cosmetic procedure in the UK. Dr Bedi attended the UK’s premier London Facial Aesthetic Conference and Exhibition (FACE) in June where she delivered a speech on the non-surgical option of Fractora; a celebrity acclaimed treatment. Dr Bedi said: “Fractora is an excellent option for skin problems. It’s a step up from high street solution and it will complement other treatments advised through the NHS.”
What is Fractora?
A fractional rejuvenation and resurfacing treatment that reduces wrinkles, skin irregularities, acne scars, and improves complexion restoring skin texture to a youthful appearance. It can be used on any area that may benefit from skin renewal, even lower and upper eyelids, cheeks, smile lines, forehead, mouth and neck.
How many treatments will I need? Each patient is unique so we offer free consultations to determine how many treatments you’ll benefit from, it’s usually between one and six sessions.
When will I see results?
Instantly. You will see most noticeable results after two weeks and improvements will continue up to three months after.
How does it work?
Fractionated RF energy in Fractora heats the deep layers of the skin in a controlled way to revitalise the collagen.
DR SUMIT VIRMANI AND DR GUNJAN BEDI
How do I care for my skin after a session? Moisturise and avoid direct sun exposure and use sunscreen everyday – which will also slow the ageing process!
Can I apply makeup after my Fractora treatment?
Patient downtime is minimal so makeup can be applied one to two days after. You may notice minor tissue damage and slight redness for up to one week.
Can I combine Fractora with other treatments? Yes, it can be combined with additional energy treatments or injectables. We call this a FracTotal Facial. 01530 249 552 Sumit - 07952 888 456 Gunjan - 07952 754 121 mediskincare.co.uk

Glowing bride A glowing bride is a beautiful bride and I have a few tricks up my sleeve to help you achieve gorgeous skin ahead of your big day. Cult brand Oskia are enjoying some serious praise in the beauty world currently and with good reason, the brand is perfect for achieving that ever sought after natural, glowing complexion for any bride. Start your routine with Oskia’s Renaissance Cleansing Gel, this is a holy grail product for so many and it’s easy to see why, it provides a gentle yet effective cleanse to leave the skin prepped and clear. Follow with my personal favourite serum, Get up and Glow which, ultimately, does exactly as its name suggests. For face cream, I would recommend the Supreme Cream 360, a vitamin-rich daily hydrator to uneven skin tone and lost luminosity and the Bedtime Beauty Boost which works hard while you get your beauty sleep to hydrate and brighten. For skin treatment, the Renaissance Mask is a luxurious, buttery balm which really boosts luminosity. Eye care is also a must for the bride to be and the gellike elixir packs a serious, antiageing punch with firming and brightening properties a plenty. I would love to help you personally tailor your skin care routine, pop into the store. Or, get 15% off by entering Glow15 at the checkout online. Platelet rich plasma for your skin
Keeping your hair happy this summer
Like all new treatments, I’m always sceptical at first but it is my job as a physician to make sure each is safe and actually works. A lot of research has been done, which provides evidence that PRP has immense capabilities to regenerate the tissues and promote tissue healing. It’s widely used in the field of medicine and orthopaedics to regenerate and repair tendons and other tissues and is now being used in aesthetics to promote skin and hair rejuvenation.
When long-awaited summer arrives, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the warmth of the sun and forget to adequately protect your hair. Sun, chlorine, salt water - all the best bits of summer - can really take their toll on your hair and turn it into a colour-faded, dried out mess.
A small sample of blood is taken from your arm, exactly like having a routine blood test at your doctors. The blood is centrifuged (device that spins the blood) for ten minutes separating PRP from the blood. PRP is used for hair loss and thinning, scar treatments, acne scars, wrinkle reduction, dark circles under the eyes, and reduction of deep skin folds. Compared to PRP, dermal fillers use a synthetic material that is designed to give volume. PRP is self-sourced and actively helps your skin to repair itself by improving skin complexion and restoring its natural glow.
The important thing is to choose the right products to protect your hair. I always recommend Wella’s System Professional Solar Helio Guard spray which offers water- resistant UV protection for your hair and scalp. The nongreasy spray reduces the effects of UV radiation on the hair and also prevents protein damage, colour fading and moisture loss. You simply mist it over your hair before or during time in the sun to give it a protective veil. This great product will ensure your hair stays vibrant and healthy. UV rays from the sun can also cause colour fading and damage to the hair structure, so, if your hair is coloured, I’d recommend Wella’s System Professional Colour Save range which has been formulated to reduce fade whilst giving your hair an intense colour brilliance.
Call use to see if you could benefit from PRP. Dr Gunjan Bedi
The Colour Save range is also great if you’ve suffered from the dreaded green hair syndrome! This is caused by copper levels in the water we swim in but technology in the Colour Save range blocks these out. Happy summer! Amanda Fall

After the chill of winter, spring is so very lovely with its new beginnings, abundance of blossoms and flowers and the opportunity to start to enjoy the outdoors as the weather warms up a little, and when you get clear blue skies for the day of your ‘I Do’s’ it’s just lovely. The food you serve your guests on your very special day is one of the most important aspects of any wedding, after the vows of course! Honestly, if you have ever been at a wedding and disliked the food you remember it, for the wrong reasons. Wedding catering is important to the comfort of your guests and actually to their enjoyment of the day too. Thankfully wedding catering has moved on a fair amount since the days of prawn cocktail, dried chicken with cold veg and trifle for pudding. One of the most loved wedding feasts are their fun family table 22 | NICHE

Wedding experts have their say
It’s all in the planning Arrival – canapés and mini bowl foods Canapés and our trademark mini bowl foods are always well received at a wedding. They seem to crop up just at that point when a little bite to eat is much appreciated don’t they? Choosing seasonal ingredients and a menu with good variation is key so that all your guests find something they enjoy. Main Event – plate waitered or sharing style The main feast is where you can really get the imagination flowing. You could opt for our popular option for family table style of wedding service whereby there are several style dishes or large sharing desserts in the middle of the table and everyone digs in - this works so well for those who want a relaxed, social affair for their wedding day and gives everyone the opportunity to get to know fellow diners. Evening Fun – revellers delight The final chance to keep your guests happy for an evening of celebration, the early evening spread is perfect for adding something slightly different from your menu for the day. From Dimblebee’s trademark ‘build your own’ stations for gourmet burgers, handmade pizza, tacos or bacon rolls to show stopping buffets – we have it all!

MIRROR MIRROR… …at the ball, who’s the cutest of them all?
I
t cannot go unnoticed that traditional fairy tales we love are being revamped into modern Hollywood movies, and a local company named Limelite has decided that it’s about time to do the same with its event entertainment technologies.
Guests take the best selfies of the night in front of the magic mirror and even have the option to sign their masterpiece using the touch screen, which can then be printed and of course shared through social media. Everyone will most definitely feel like the fairest at the ball.
The photobooth craze we all know and love is anything but conventional or outdated – much like the fairy tale – but the guys over at Limelite have introduced a new-fangled gadget. It’s the very latest in event photo equipment and will be appearing at proms, office parties, galas, fetes, weddings, back gardens and balls across the Midlands.
Another one of Limelite’s latest additions is the all singing (literally), all dancing Marryoke booth. As you might have guested by its name, it’s a popular one at weddings but has also been a big hit at any event it’s
The full-length Selfie Magic Mirror poses the latest technology in interactive photo taking. Its sleek design fits in seamlessly with any themed event, from fairy tale to Las Vegas, and offers a user friendly touch screen – quite friendly indeed with its many compliments! It communicates with guests through animations and a cheekily confident and entertaining voice guide.
been to yet, we guess Limelite just couldn’t resist this hilarious pun! Party-goers have the opportunity to sing their hearts out in the Marryoke booth with all the muchloved photobooth props to hand. It really is a great excuse for people to get together in groups and show the rest of the party what they’ve got! It’s got all the classic hairbrush numbers from Grease’s ‘Summer Nights’ to One Direction’s ‘Story of My Life’ and singers get to keep the evidence of their shenanigans from the night before! The Bride and Groom (or event organisers) will also get a mash-up of their guest’s brilliant performances. Add something special to your next event with this great entertaining technology and invite your guests to pose in front of the Magic Mirror, and a good old Marryoke singa-long making for something to remember.

Charnwood’s
Secret venue
The place where romantic memories are made, Abbots Oak is the fairytale, quintessential wedding setting
A
Grade II listed building and located on the edge of the stunning Charnwood Forest, the beautifully restored venue was lovingly renovated by Sarah and Anthony Kurr whose hopes for a welcoming, luxurious, boutique wedding, bar and hotel have been realised through hard work and unswerving passion for the project. The building itself is steeped in history and retains much of its rustic charm as well as many original features and works of art. Having purchased the property back in January 2013, the couple fell in love with the period charm of the place and knew from the start that it was a place that was crying out for some TLC and needed to be appreciated by as many people as possible. “I knew as soon as we pulled up to 28 | NICHE
the building that it was something special, it holds so much history and is so unique. I knew it was somewhere that had to be shared with the public,” Sarah enthused. The boutique venue opened its beautifully refurbished doors this year with a bar, luxury bedrooms and the capacity for a host of events, including weddings. The enthusiasm the Kurrs have for providing a wedding exactly as any couple want in their unique romantic location is palpable. Ensuring that every little detail is accommodated, a wedding at Abbots Oak has exclusive use of the house enabling a home from home feel for the wedding party. As a soon-to-be licensed venue, a marriage license will mean that not only can couples celebrate
with a reception but they can hold the all-important ceremony at the countryside boutique hotel too with a choice of rooms featuring stunning original features accommodating anywhere up to 160 guests. Also in the pipeline are plans for an extended Orangery and there is ample space for marquees to allow for weddings of any size to be arranged. Wedding feasts, and indeed any Abbots Oak feast, comes from the very capable hands of Paul Leary of Woodhouse Eaves. He brings his flair and style to the menu incorporating fresh and exciting ingredients from local farmers, producers and suppliers taking inspiration from the English countryside surroundings. The addition of Paul to the team is
I knew as soon as we pulled up to the building that it was something special further enforcement of the ethos of the Grade II listed house, with the team committed to creating a sympathetic renovation at Abbots Oak with the help of local tradespeople, products and services and an ‘open home’ feel to anyone who visits, whether for a drink at the bar on a Friday or Saturday evening, a private event, an overnight stay or wedding. Along with their home from home feel, the duo is keen to ensure that the house supports local suppliers for the many aspects of running things including utilising the crème de la crème of the food world, drinks world and event suppliers with people like Bradgate Events, Eve Lily, Dimblebee Catering, Burleigh Gin and Charnwood Brewery all contributing.
The grounds are a photographer’s dream with four-acres of formal gardens boasting spectacular views and wedding day photo backdrops to choose from including woodland and lovingly landscaped gardens. In the house itself there’s the grand staircase, which is said to be taken from the Pall Mall home of Nell Gwyn, mistress of King Charles II, and even Abbots Oak’s very own tower which offers views out to not one but five counties. The house lends to a wide variety of unique events, corporate or private and the couple are already looking forward to the first Abbots Oak Christmas. “We can’t wait to host Christmas at the house! With our open fires, traditional feel and luxurious touches the building really
lends itself to the perfect English Country Christmas,” Sarah told us. If you can’t wait until then though, make sure you book in a weekend away or a visit to the bar before word spreads and it becomes a sell out!

A new taste of New York Marco Pierre White revamps New York Italian menu Diners at Marco’s New York Italian in Leicester can now tuck into even more Italian-American classics, as the family-friendly restaurant launches its new menu. Combining Marco Pierre White’s Italian heritage and his love for New York, the renowned chef has personally designed over 20 new dishes for guests to choose from, which recently launched on 14th June. Representing the Italian side, Marco has added a wild mushroom lasagne; salmon cannelloni, and a fresh, summery caprese salad. New trans-Atlantic highlights include the new and improved American style nachos, and the huge New York BBQ platter, both of which typify American flavours and portion size. Marco has also revamped the vegetarian options, with a spinach and ricotta calzone, quinoa superfood salad and macaroni cheese all now available.
For those with a sweet tooth, old favourite desserts such as the New York cheesecake and Chicago brownie, are now joined by the raspberry sundae and the Manhattan milkshake – a delicious concoction of panna cotta milkshake, ice cream, fruit and cheesecake. Speaking on the launch of the menu, Marco Pierre White said: “Italian cuisine will always be close to my heart. My mother was from there and I have a genuine passion for creating authentic, affordable Italian dining. The cuisine partners so well with New York culture and flavours, Marco’s New York Italian Leicester combine the two places perfectly.” Luke Whitaker, Restaurant Manager, said: “We’re extremely excited to have launched a new menu, designed by the man himself. All of your favourites are still here, but you may have a new favourite by the end of your next visit!” To see the new menu in full and to book your table, visit our website.

environment for the client which involves all parties from the start. We create a brief, and work with the client’s space to form a virtual design so the pond can be easily visualised, from here we can change or tweak any details before we even get started with the actual physical work. Post installation we always follow up with aftercare, so if something is not exactly as a client dreamed it would be we make sure it becomes exactly that!” Creative Director Michael told us. A pond is more than a place for fish to dwell, a well created water space becomes home to a host of wildlife and encourages any garden to come
alive with movement and nature. Michael Wheat Pond & Garden Design hold this as a very important element of what it does and works closely with the Wildlife Trust to support their vision of gardens buzzing with wildlife across the UK, whether a small city dwelling or rolling countryside space. “I have always been spurred on by the thought that we can create a water space within gardens which attracts various breeds of wildlife, that we are bringing it to life with the perfect habitat. People always love the idea of sitting and relaxing by water, but, more than that we are seeing a great deal of clients motivated by the thought that they are attracting

Bedecked & Bejewelled From exotic gemstone hues to impressionist recreations, here are some ideas for eclectic arrangements you’ll love Bluebell Gray - Dualit Kettle £105 A little bit whimsical, oh so pretty, it won’t fail to put a smile on your face whenever you use it to make a cup of tea!
Jewel tones and shapes are big this season and for good reason. They play into the other trends for geometric lines, metallic shimmers and of course, lovely rich jewel hues, think azure, ruby, emerald, sapphire, opal and quartz. These are all stones we would love to wear, so it follows that they would also look good adorning our homes. Another big trend this year is the watercolour look. Who loves Monet’s Waterlilies? Well, try recreating that look in your soft furnishings, bed linen, cushions, curtains etc. It’s a very artsy look, naturally, and when choosing your colours carefully, pairs beautifully with jewel inspired items. Wallpaper has had a bit of a renaissance too, and in keeping with these other trends, it is being used as more of a mural, or ‘wall art’ rather than just a wall covering. I personally love some of the more artistic designs out there, such as this one from Little Greene, Upper Brook Street in Minuit. It is a real statement yet still beautiful and delicate. I want it in my own home! So the idea here is to embrace the prettiest colours of summer in whatever form you prefer, whether it is structured geometrics, luxe jewels, pretty watercolours, or ethnic designs, mix and match pieces you love to create a true eclectic scheme which you will enjoy all year. Have fun!

Those in Property have their say
Beautiful furniture ‘Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful’, William Morris said, and I have to say I absolutely agree with him. How many items of furniture in your home do you truly love? How many pieces reflect your true tastes, are built to last and perhaps even become family heirlooms? Consider whether your home deserves some key talking point pieces from which you can inject your unique style into your décor, I suspect it does. To me, with our company’s nearly 200 years of cabinetmaking experience, I appreciate well-crafted pieces in the home. I know that what we build is stunning and built to last and that whilst a piece from us may cost more than your average flat pack purchase, ours is unique, a talking point and a reflection of true eye for detail. Added to the fact that it will be better for your bank balance in the long run, you will rarely find a hand-crafted piece at a boot sale or internet auction sites for example.
Your dream island The kitchen island is one of the most highly requested elements of our kitchen designs. With the kitchen being the heart of the home, the island is an integral part of it all. The island is where it all happens, from gathering with the family at mealtimes to entertaining for a dinner party with friends, it’s the place where all the prep and socialising goes on. The choice available these days means a kitchen island is more than a work surface with something to suit a wide range of spaces. All the mod cons can be added including power packs with USB plugins! Most spaces benefit from an island but it’s important to consider: It must look proportional Sometimes there just isn’t sufficient space to have one and installing one in these circumstances can be detrimental to the overall design of the kitchen. Will you utilise it enough? Occasionally people request an island purely for aesthetic purposes and whilst there is nothing wrong with having one purely for this purpose, it can be a hefty space taker if it’s not going to be used so this too ought to be factored into the process.
Tech and flooring join forces Technology is changing the way we shop for the interiors of our homes. It’s rare these days that someone doesn’t enter our showroom at MJ Flooring without showing us their floor Pinterest mood board, or screenshots of various interiors on their phones. What was once an entirely tactile purchase, i.e. Clients wanting to touch the carpet or wooden floors before having any idea of what they want, it’s now a twofold process with most people having a vision of what they want before having so much as stepped foot inside a showroom. This is a good thing of course, a client that comes to us with an idea is often easier to please. They know what they want and aren’t afraid to ask for it. If they are looking for an unusual colour or a specific design, we have the option of custom making a carpet to their exact requirements. To help with the process several brands we stock are also compatible with a computer system which allows for a flooring choice to be super-imposed onto a client’s photograph of their room, allowing for a precise vision of the finished result before any works are carried out.
You will never regret buying quality. A craftsman made item sets the tone for the room, a statement piece in the hall reminds your visitors that your home is tasteful. Some pieces may be purely functional, but with our guidance they can be an art form, truly making your house your home. Richard Lowe
A superior design and installation company will of course consider all these aspects when planning the space. Andrew Best
Flooring remains a tactile product which needs to be felt before purchase, so our showroom remains a place for people to come and ‘try things for size’. Technology has been a big advantage to clients and ourselves. Mark Lucas

Ideas to bear in mind when dreaming up your new kitchen – EMILY KIRTON discovers the latest in interior design Food is big news these days as staying in becomes the new going out, chefs and healthy eating personalities appear to be the new celebrities and as a result the kitchen is more than simply somewhere to rustle up a bite to eat. It has become a space for entertaining friends, socialising with the rest of the family, injecting a bit of style and bringing to life your culinary skills. The lifestyle kitchen is being created because of this rising food trend, with many of us looking to make a real interior statement with our kitchens, Andrew Best of Best Trend told us: “We have seen how the influence of these trends within the food industry has made a significant impact on how we design kitchen spaces. Clients come to us with clear ideas of what they want and as such we are all becoming designers of our own kitchen spaces. Clients come to us armed with mood boards on Pinterest and a keen eye on trends through magazines, cook books and programmes.
Entertaining within the home is always a more sociable and intimate affair than dining out and in recent years pop up restaurants and dining within the home has become somewhat of an increasingly popular and stylish way to dine and socialise. Often more laid back, personal and intimate, the sociability of dining at home with friends and family is an all-round winning formula and because of this increased popularity, our kitchen spaces are as a result designed to reflect this. “The kitchen space now must and can incorporate so much for a modern family, islands have never been more popular as a centrepiece and combine more than cupboard space with power points and USB ports. Work tops are bigger and more plentiful, steam ovens and clever storage solutions are all part of creating a lifestyle kitchen fit for entertaining, Andrew commented. Best Trend’s ability to accommodate client’s design ideas and their flexible approach to your kitchen design is reflected
in their extensive ranges of often hand-crafted elements to each unique space. “We have trusted and highly skilled suppliers for our designs and work to any spec that a client desires, really this is where the enjoyment comes in for us; in creating something to a high specification that incorporates exceptionally made products. The result, where the work comes together and delights a client and ultimately changes the way they feel about their home is really very rewarding to the whole team.

A construction companion through troubled times of Brexit
‘P
rojects don’t always go to plan,’ says Nick Navas, founder of Navas Associates, a property and construction consultancy based in Leicestershire. This is the reason why the independent company has been built to encompass all sectors of the construction and property process. Believing in professional, yet down to earth service with heaps of friendly personality, Nick takes it upon himself to be on hand at every point of a client’s project seeing to it that they are in the know every step of the way. Nick said: “I set Navas up to be multi-disciplined, so that we could
Choosing the right consultant ◆ Make sure your consultant is properly insured ◆ Make sure they are willing to meet with you regularly and discuss any changes to a project as required ◆ Ask for their track record or case studies to see what kind of projects they have been handling and how this fits in with yours ◆ Speak to their former clients and get a feel for their online reviews and customer satisfaction rating in general ◆ Above all you need to find a team that is friendly and reliable. handle all aspects of a project for a client and guarantee continuity, a bespoke, personal service and flow throughout.” As construction consultants we act as one point of contact for every specialism having over three decades worth of trusted and respected contacts. One of the most recognised traits of Navas is their drive for providing personal service and never faltering on it no matter what the climate is within the fast paced ever-changing industry. “We provide the kind of service we would expect to receive ourselves and take great pride in the reputation we have built upon this.” Having begun a career in the sector as an architectural technician, working in both the public and private sector that includes Blue Chip and Crown Estate organisations, and going on to managing client portfolios of 10,000 properties, Nick built his own company with 35 years of industry first-hand experience behind him. “It was at a time when most businesses were closing down or reducing their workforce. Our emphasis on ‘turning properties into assets,’ which is to bring into play our ability to adapt and carry out a diverse range of services, which has helped us weather the uncertainty within the property and construction sector.” Business Development Manager Clair Westwood said: “During the recession Navas had to realign itself. I think that is what Nick is good at; finding the balance, and that’s why we’ve survived for so long without huge resources.” Having survived the tumultuous times over the past five-seven years, Nick has proven his company to be prepared for anything.
Looking to the future he said: “In particular, I see Brexit as being a key issue within the industry as it will stifle growth until the terms have been established. Along with this, the housing market will plateau out for a period of time as such time as the government changes and policies have taken hold and settled down.” The firm are taking on work for schools, housing organisations, landlords and retailers in a bid to sustain the development of Midlands’ organisations, taking them from ‘reactive to proactive.’ Call upon Navas to procure your projects, rescue previously badly managed projects, or gain professional property support and advice.

Navas projects Marble Hall, Derby We acted as sub-consultant for one of our long-term clients Turner & Townsend providing them with mechanical and electrical clerk of works services. Clerks of works are notoriously difficult to find, let alone hold on to so to find two fantastic people in Mike (building) and Derek (Mechanical & Electrical), was a rare find indeed. Not only did they over deliver with the client but I still use them on jobs today. This was a huge project of a grade I Listed former munitions factory and the design needed to be considered to remain as close to the original as possible. The project won the Derby Property Awards 2016.
Retford Splash Park, Nottinghamshire A project that stands out is the much-needed community splash park and public amenity building at Kings Park, Retford. Our role was to act as designer, employer’s agent and clerk of the works for the build. I’d worked with Bassetlaw Council before and have a great relationship with Dan, the Regeneration Manager, but being able to support Dan and his team really gave us opportunity as a small building consultancy to illustrate our larger capabilities.
Bicester Town Council, Oxfordshire We carried out a survey for Bicester Town Council to determine the extent of their squatters ‘bat’ problem and provided them with a number of options for the refurbishment with the little creatures in mind. This resulted in the top floor and the building being brought back into community use with future plans added to make the building more inclusive. The proposals included works to evict the bats from the building and relocate them to a new home within the grounds, which was a great success.

Stand out ponds Last issue I discussed about having an awesome garden all year round. Now that you’ve had two months to get started, I’m now going to discuss ponds and how to make them stand out in your garden. Why have a pond in the first place? For me, it’s all about giving the garden some movement. So if you want it to really stand out you need movement in the pond.

The best ways of achieving this are with a waterfall, maybe a fountain pump or even some kind of jumping jets! Also, the shape of your pond doesn’t have to be circular. Think natural. A natural pond can take on many irregular shapes and they aren’t always on level ground. The subtle sound of a pond and reflection of the sun off the water’s surface as you sit outside is incredibly calming adding a sense of peace and serenity to your outdoor retreat. Water is just awesome, and it’s even better if it’s lit up at night. We love mixing technology with the natural world, but also about hiding it away. We do lots of lighting these days with the new LEDS. They are cost effective to run, easily concealed, and really add a lot to the pond or water feature you’re about to install. Next issue I’ll delve into swimponds! Michael Wheat

AWARD WINNING Glynis Wright & Co Family Law Solicitors
celebrate six years of meteoric growth! Glynis Wright is the owner and head of Glynis Wright & Co which she founded single handedly in 2011 in Bowling Green Street, Leicester
S
ince then, the firm has won multiple awards and has seen staggering growth from a team of two to a team of 17 employees. Services provided are divorce and financial settlements, disputes involving children after breakup, cohabitation breakups, pre-nuptial and living together agreements. The practice also uses out of court methods of resolution such as round tables, mediation and family arbitration.
The team has now grown from one lawyer to eight family law specialists; many of whom are award winning lawyers in their own right. In addition to Glynis, the team comprises Gayle Rowley, Lisa-Marie Leanders and Stephanie Kyriacou. More recently, the company also welcomed aboard Nanita Goyal, Angela Maxfield, Jo Wilbraham and Rina Mistry. In addition, the practice has also taken on Harinder Sahota as the Practice Manager for the company.
Glynis said that she thought one of the main reasons why Glynis Wright & Co had enjoyed so much success was owing to the fact that the company only specialise in one area of law, which means that there is a vast wealth of knowledge and expertise in family law under one roof.
With this latest expansion, Glynis Wright & Co has become the largest single provider of family law services in Leicester and one of the largest in the West and East Midlands. The company is proud to bring together a wealth of experience and expertise in family law services and to take its

Vaping in the workplace
Torr Waterfield appoint director
Amicable Divorces: the best way forward
It has been some time since England followed the rest of the UK in banning smoking in indoor workplaces. This was ten years ago in July 2007, but as with many rules and regulations something happens to attempt to bend the rules.
Local accountancy practice, Torr Waterfield, is delighted to announce the appointment of Alistair Ferris as director. Alistair, who joined in 2006, has helped greatly in the growth of the business in recent years, and his promotion is recognition of his efforts.
The introduction of the electronic cigarette asked new questions – is it smoking or is it vaping? If it is vaping should this be allowed inside of the workplace?
Prior to joining Torr Waterfield, Alistair was a director of his family business, Austin Berridge Limited; a curtain and blind manufacturer and retailer. Alistair ‘learned the ropes’ of business from the bottom up cleaning the shop windows every morning, dusting the showroom and making tea for the team! After 10 years of hard work Alistair took over the running of the business and was appointed a director.
Sadly, current divorce law forces couples to blame each other unless they can wait two years to divorce. This does not mean you should wait two years before proceeding with a divorce, delaying matters can often cause confusion for any children involved or, can mean financial matters become more complex.
E-cigarettes are not covered by UK smoke free legislation because they are not lit, and no burning takes place. An employee could argue if they are vaping or using an e-cigarette that they are not smoking in the eyes of the law. Vaping has been tested via the employment tribunal system in Insley v Accent Catering. Ms Insley, a catering assistant at the school, was seen vaping by the head teacher. Consequently, Ms Insley was invited to a disciplinary hearing, but resigned before this happened. This was challenged via an employment tribunal. The employment tribunal held that although the employer had ‘reasonable and proper cause’ for its actions it was not clear that the employee had breached any policies. There is a clear learning point to ensure that the use of e-cigarettes is covered within policy documentation. Thus, being part of an employee’s terms/conditions of employment. Being dissatisfied with the external accountant of the company and to expand his own knowledge, Alistair enrolled for evening classes at De Montfort University to gain the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification. In 2006 the family sold the business; and he started his accountancy career with Torr Waterfield. He has now been with us for over 10 years, has progressed to be a Fellow of the ACCA and uses his ‘hands on’ business knowledge and accounting skills to support his widening and varied client portfolio. Alistair has a partner, Sarah and children, Evie 12 and Frank 8. We wish Alistair continued success with us. 0116 242 3400 torrwaterfield.co.uk
It is however possible to proceed based on the other party’s unreasonable behavior. If you select a solicitor committed to approaching your divorce in a non-confrontational way, they will correspond with your spouse to let them have sight of the proposed petition before you proceed. In many cases parties will often reach an agreement before it reaches the court, which is of course a more amicable outcome. This does not mean your solicitor will not fight to achieve the very best financial settlement for you, it simply means they will not cause you to incur unnecessary legal fees in disputing matters that can be agreed, saving your costs for more important matters such as your home and children. Even if you decide to separate and do not wish to proceed with a divorce straight away, it is important that you get early advice in order to fully understand matters you need to consider. The more that can be resolved and formally recorded at the time of separation the more straightforward your divorce may be. Glynis Wright 0116 238 5680 glyniswright.co.uk

Leicester’s newest business expo created the first Cross Connections Business Expo. After investigating a huge range of venues around Leicester and Leicestershire, only one suited the needs of the expo exactly. The spacious and flexible Leicester Racecourse venue, The Kube. A brand-new business exhibition was created this year based on a survey of likes and dislikes from frequent expo-goers Cross Productions surveyed their teams and clients opinions of other popular business expos after noticing they themselves had always felt there to be something missing from each they have attended. Common disapprovals revolved around atmosphere, food options, bathroom facilities, and parking. Taking these aspects into consideration, Cross Productions 58 | NICHE
Cross Connections event creator Sally Smith said: “The Kube has a generous amount of onsite free parking, plenty of bathroom facilities, a lunch bag service, and most importantly, the space and flexibility to allow us to completely adapt the venue to how we wanted it. The only thing left in our hands after that was the atmosphere and attendees.” Taking place on 19th May, the outside space featured display vehicles from Sturgess Jaguar and gourmet hot food van The Shack. Inside, 60 companies were brought together showcasing their unique
selling points to the public, and four expert speakers; Barrie Stephen, Ed Truman, Hema Mistry and Alistair Cambell shared their industry knowledge throughout the day. “On the day I had people coming up to me saying how much of a friendly and upbeat atmosphere it was. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that we had so many great down to earth business people on the stands. “The music really lifted spirits and made it a lot more casual, which seems to be what people enjoyed as this was a day out of the office for them but somewhere they could build valuable contacts and relationships too.” The Cross Connections Expo will be back next year at The Kube on Wednesday 16th May. crossconnectionsexpo.co.uk
A new private surgery dedicated solely to reproductive health, came to Leicester last year. Couples, families and singletons experiencing problems with conceiving were given a new chance at having children when X&Y Fertility moved into New Walk in 2016. Dr Bryan Woodward, Scientific Director of the clinic, set up X&Y Fertility in order to provide a first-class, discrete service for those looking to investigate their reproductive health. In the UK, 3.5 million people have difficulty conceiving or are considered infertile, the NHS has estimated. For many, Dr Woodward’s new clinic has provided a desperately sought after second, or in some cases fourth or fifth, opinion without having to travel to London where many other leading clinics are based.
A wide range of diagnostic tests and fertility treatments are available at the New Walk centre including semen analysis, Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), sperm freezing, Post Vasectomy Semen Analysis, DI - Donor Insemination, and IUI - Intrauterine Insemination. Dr Woodward expresses his enthusiasm to offer alternative routes to parenthood for all people wanting to create a family. X&Y Facility emphasise their dedication to assisting the LGBT community promoting their use of screened donor sperm for same-sex females, sperm tests and surrogacy advice for gay men, sperm storage for transwomen and many more options. To assess the options available, X&Y Fertility forms a relationship with each individual to understand their medical history and coordinate tests and treatments that are appropriate for their situation to ensure the best
possible outcome. For men, basic or advanced semen analysis is available along with antisperm, antibody and genetic testing, and lifestyle advice to improve fertility. For women, hormone testing and ultrasound scanning for follicle growth and womb lining thickness as well as licensed insemination procedures are offered. As a Consultant Reproductive Scientist, Dr Woodward is a recognised Fellow of the Royal College of Pathology and is registered with the Health & Care Professions Council with a PhD in male infertility. His business partner Melanie Proffitt, Business Director, has spent eight years as the General Manager for the London Fertility Centre based on Harley Street. Together with the rest of the team and links to clinics in many countries, they aim to aid people across the globe in starting a family. 0116 367 6395 xyfertility.co.uk
Letting Agents: tenant fees will be banned. Is your agency prepared? After suggesting the idea more than six months ago in the 2016 Autumn statement, the government announced during the Queen’s Speech its plans to press ahead with the ban on tenant’s fees to letting agents. Despite Arla Propertymark suggesting this would be at the cost of 4,000 jobs and a loss of £200m in turnover to letting agents, it’s extremely likely a new Tenant’s Fees Bill will be passed into law since all the main parties included this ban in their manifestos. The new legislation states with the exception of rent, a refundable security deposit (no more than one month’s rent) and a holding deposit (no more than one week’s rent), the ban will prevent agents and landlords from receiving any administrative charges as part of a tenancy in a bid to make the lettings process more transparent. Although the national average in fees paid is £223, the fees will vary from one agency to another and
will be greater in some bigger cities. London renters have complained of fees totalling £2,000. Whether you agree with the ban or not, managing this tricky period of change will prove difficult for letting agents and will have a dramatic effect on their accounts.. MNE accounting work with a local and national letting agencies in our outsourcing and client accounting departments. Our client accounting team currently looks after 40,000 UK properties and MD Tim Emmony acts as Finance Director for some of these agents putting new solutions in place to help them navigate through these changes in legislation, evolving their approach to how their finances are managed. Simply passing lost revenue on to your landlord, as I’m sure you’re aware, is going to be an unpopular move. If you’re a letting agent and not yet clear on the effects of this ban to your business, get in touch and Tim can work through some financial models with you. 0116 255 2422 NICHE | 59

The Queen’s Speech - Political upheaval means businesses will remain uncertain about tax changes until later in the year The political turmoil of the past few months has been quite unsettling for business. The recent fall-out from the General Election is making tax planning difficult for businesses. A large number of complex business taxation measures were dropped from the Finance Bill before Britain went to the polls on June 8. If the Tories had secured a majority in the Election, then we would have expected these measures to be revisited later in essentially the same form. As matters stand, they are not officially part of either an Act of a Bill. Still, now that PM Theresa May has entered into a “confidence and

A distributor simply spreads awareness of the all-together better deals households can achieve with gas, electricity, landline, broadband and mobile service bills. Partners can build their ideal lifestyle as Utility Warehouse demands nothing

Get noticed online with great web design
Organic vs paid search
An online presence is essential to the success of any modernday business. But simply having a website is not enough - to really get ahead online, you need to know that your website is performing as it should.
Whether to use organic or paid search can be a difficult decision for business owners. When writing a query into a search engine, the websites listed underneath the adverts are known as the ‘organic results.’ These provide a valued resource for traffic for a number of reasons.
Your website will often provide potential customers with their first impression of your business, so in order to prove your credibility and encourage people to contact you, it needs to be up to date, accurate, and fast. Your website also needs to work well on all screen sizes. In fact, Google has even made mobile-friendliness a search ranking factor, so to be found online, you need a website built with responsive design. A responsive website will automatically adapt to whatever device your customers are using - this means no pages jumping around on your phone screen, no scrolling left to right to read text, and no zooming in to view content. If your website isn’t mobilefriendly, your customers won’t like it, and neither will Google. You’ll lose business to your competitors who have already updated their websites for modern users. To be sure you’re getting optimal results from your website’s design, contact us for a free website health check. Our websites are professional, responsive, and completely bespoke - because every unique business deserves a unique website. John Cooper 0116 4105 996 itseeze-leicester.co.uk 68 | NICHE
Various sources online suggest that paid search equates to just over five per cent of all traffic whereas organic search is lingering around 95 per cent, although this does not include mobile. Click-through rate tends to be higher on organic results on the first page of Google. The higher your ranking position, the higher the click-through rate. Content creation, link building, optimising meta elements and keywords can take time to execute but is arguably the most cost-effective and long-lasting. Overall, organic search is the most efficient in the long term. However, paid search can be very cost-efficient as well. It is easy to set up and also generates traffic quickly for the type of searches your customers are entering in Google. However, it does require someone with a lot of expertise to fine-tune campaigns to produce a significant amount of revenue. Call me to discuss the many benefits of organic search or find out how you can get a free SEO audit for your business. Diane Esho 0333 332 6396 123ranking.co.uk/the-conversion-genie
Go ultra low We are proud to be one of the first organisations in the UK to receive the ‘Go Ultra Low Company’ status. Some of you will already know about Chris’s love affair with electric vehicles and this newly launched initiative ‘Go Ultra Low’, recognises businesses that are embracing EV’s. Over 90,000 drivers have switched and this government and automotive industry campaign encourages even more drivers to switch to electric. The electric car with the longest range, a plug-in hybrid, can travel up to 800 miles and switching could save you £750 a year in fuel bills, and, 96% of motorway services have a rapid charger which could recharge your car to up to 80% in under 30 minutes. This new accreditation builds on our success when we won Eco Business of the Year in the 2016 Niche Business Awards, recognising SVP’s commitment to environmental responsibility in all areas of our business, including our vehicles. By the end of 2017, SVP will be 100% ultra-low vehicle emissions - in fact, zero emissions - and that’s why we’ve received this recognition as well as our commitment to continuing this as a company strategy over the next five years. We’re really committed to making a difference to the environment by reducing CO2 emissions and improving air quality in our region, not to mention how fun EV’s are to drive! Corporate and Events Fundraiser at Hope Against Cancer After just four months working at Hope Against Cancer, Tracey has successfully found her calling in life after many determined years to reach this point. Once a Loughborough Grammar School pupil, she wanted to be a vet or a nurse but as she reached her teens she realised this might not be the best career choice as the sight of blood unsettles her! Tracey ended up working in retail and later on moved into early year’s education – a series of jobs that always had something missing. It wasn’t until she lost her
mum to cancer that she decided she needed to make a change. She built up the courage to become a volunteer fundraiser and progressed in the charitable sector from there. Tracey is now able to take the vast amount of inspiration she still feels from her mum and feed it into her passion to raise more funds for more ground breaking research projects in the local fight against cancer. In her Hope role, she is generating and increasing revenue streams through events, and forming and building on corporate relationships. She is also ensuring that Hope’s corporate social responsibility objectives are fulfilled as well as boosting their brand identity and
motivating employees. And anyone who knows Tracey will know that her infectious enthusiasm makes her perfect for the job. She really does put the fun in fundraising.

SARA LOVATT
Cherie has run the Cherie Concannon Ltd show for 25 years with just one aim; to create success for other people. Her role in life is to impact workplaces inspiring them and creating high performance environments, which lead to great success.
Gripped by, and fanatical about, art, Sara is very proud to have encouraged lots of families and children through the doors of her very own gallery; undoubtedly due to her incredible passion and enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and inspiring others to enjoy art in the same way as herself.
Managing Director at Cherie Concannon Ltd
Growing up on a sheep farm in Western Australia, Cherie never had a specific career in mind for the future; instead, she has found herself to be exactly where and what she has always wanted to be. With the support of her father she was given the gift of confidence allowing her to achieve throughout her career. With no formal qualifications, Cherie went into telemarketing and telesales before setting up her own business where she presently coaches and supports 25 local businesses. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” Out of work, Cherie’s hobbies include yoga, travel and horses and currently coaches International Event Rider Emma Hyslop-Webb.
Her love affair with art began after meeting American Artist Robert Heindal, an illustrator focussing on the art of dance. At the time, Sara was a trained dancer planning a professional career in the field but her fascination with art pulled her in a different direction. Sara’s dance training had a huge influence on her adult life teaching her what success and failure felt like and that hard work and dedication can help you achieve anything. PRATIK MASTER
Director and Chef Patron at Lilu Two years ago Leicester witnessed the evolution of the Asian restaurant when it was gifted with its first ever prix fixe (fixed price) Indian eatery. Lilu was established by Pratik after a lifetime dreaming of opening a restaurant. Pratik worked in sales after gaining a geography degree but it would take a major event in his life to encourage him to live his dream. He helped to run the family corner shop after the unfortunate passing of his mother, which taught the Evington-born restraunteur that life is far too short to pass up on doing what you love. With the support of his father, wife
dislocated hips and in a full plaster cast from her underarms to her toes until she was five, she admires her mother and father for coping with four other children, juggling multiple jobs, home-cooked meals, homemade clothes, and an abundance of their time. Before setting up Antidote Art, she enjoyed a career in sales requiring her to develop longterm relationships, which she has adopted in the running of her gallery to develop trust and integrity. Sara has never looked over her shoulder at what anyone else is doing, concentrating only on what she is doing. She says: “If you are going to compare, only compare yourself to the best!”
and in-laws, Pratik was inspired to set up Lilu while on his quest for better Indian food. Travelling the world in search of new and inspiring cuisines, Pratik gained a vast amount of foodie knowledge. His passion for food and travel, especially around India, has led him to the career of his dreams. Food should bring everyone together, as Pratik says, and he hopes to achieve this by working with charities like The Real Junk Food Project by offering left over ingredients to enable them to feed those in need. This year the lifelong foodie travelled to India to sample some of the most diverse culinary fare the world has to offer from street food to five star dining experiences, of which can be viewed on his YouTube channel. With this know-how, Pratik hopes Lilu will become the best restaurant in Leicester, perhaps even the best restaurant in England and who knows what could be next.
STEVE ADAMS
Director of Business Development at Cambridge & Counties Bank Growing up Steve wanted the footballing dream but soon discovered his talents were more suited to the banking world. Starting out in humble beginnings – stuffing envelopes, he gathered 40 years of experience organically which included being Credit Underwriter with a discretion to approve loans up to £2.5m. It was this climb which put him in good stead for his career. Today, Steve manages a small team where his primary responsibility is new and existing business customer generation. Attracted to the role for the bank’s relative infancy, Steve cites that the role ‘excited him’ from the very start. The support of his wife, who he says, ‘is always positive and looks for the good in all situations’ and one of his previous managers who inspired him when he was a Credit Underwriter, has got him to where he is today. Steve’s attitude to always aim to enjoy life and live it to the fullest is clear. His footballing passion has never faltered though and even though he’s not on the pitch, he happily watches from the side-lines with a West Brom season ticket. NICHE | 71

Apprentices vital to Leicestershire economy 3aaa apprentice wins Higher Apprentice of The Year at Leicestershire Apprenticeship Hub Graduation Ceremony 2017
T
he annual Leicestershire Apprenticeship Hub Graduation Ceremony is designed to celebrate the importance of apprenticeship training in Leicestershire, publicise the benefits of apprenticeships as well as ultimately celebrating the success of apprentices across the region. Ateeqa Omar started her apprenticeship journey in September 2014, through a level 3 technology apprenticeship at 3aaa Apprenticeships’ Leicester training academy. After its completion, she made the decision to advance her technological knowledge through 3aaa Apprenticeships’ level 4 technology programme and excelled beyond expectations. The academy team were so impressed with Ateeqa’s accomplishments and dedication to building her career, they felt it necessary to recognise this by nominating her to receive an award at the 2017 Leicestershire Apprenticeship Hub Graduation Ceremony, which she went on to win
in her nominated category for Higher Apprentice of the Year. Ruth Sutton, Ateeqa’s trainer during both levels of her apprenticeship said: “I was Ateeqa’s assessor from six months into her level 3; she showed little confidence at this time. She showed great intelligence and was always forefront of the class to take part in activities. Her employer showed great interest in her progressing within the NHS. Ateeqa has built a career due to her determination and the assistance of 3aaa Apprenticeships in building her skills.” Her winning of the award is further verification of the industry-leading work 3aaa Apprenticeships do to develop highly-skilled, ambitious employees, who will go on to help grow the businesses they work for. Ateeqa commented: “When I first heard about apprenticeships I instantly thought that it would be something I would consider doing over going to University. The journey as a 3aaa apprentice has been a life
changing experience, from where I began to where I am currently is unbelievable. “I have seen my friends go to uni but are currently unemployed, so I’m grateful that I chose to do an apprenticeship. The cherry on top was winning the award. It shows that my hard work and dedication has paid off. My journey has been successful with the help of 3aaa Apprenticeships, the staff have been really supportive and have guided me throughout.” This year’s ceremony highlighted a range of talent across Leicestershire, with apprenticeships now being an integral training method for businesses of all sizes. The continued growth of the Leicestershire apprenticeship provision is evidence of the commitment from local employers to developing their staff from within the region and ultimately strengthening the economy.

But what’s so great about these products and at what type of events do they belong? Selfie frames have the fantastic ability of being a crossover product, used just as much for business events as they are for family occasions. Whether you have a stall at an industry exhibition, you’re hosting an event on behalf of your business, or some of your team are going out and about, a selfie frame has a place. Are you organising a wedding, birthday party, christening or other special day? A selfie frame is a brilliant addition to any occasion, as it gets people together, posing for photographs. It also offers a point of interest between people who don’t know each other.
you’ve organised or attended an event that involved meeting people, networking and encouraging people to engage with your company. Not only will the selfie frame interest people enough to stop and talk to you and your team, it will also remind you of who was there, and help you match names to business cards after a long day. The results look brilliant on social media and people really engage with it – great news for everyone. After the event, make sure you keep all of the photos and share them on the company social media account. People who attended the event are likely to be looking for the photos afterwards, so having them up there gives them a chance to tag and share as they see fit. ISDN technology has been around since the ‘80s; a real boost to businesses back then. But clearly, communications have progressed a fair bit since then with IP technology part of everyday life. It’s time to look at the alternatives to keep your business at the forefront and ensure the systems you have in place are compatible with future technology. It’s time to look at upgrading to SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). The latest
taxi cab app Taxi drivers around the UK are leading the way in booking technology Nineteen taxi companies – and counting – have united over the development of the very latest in app technology to rival other popular taxi apps. Together, they have created a global app designed to make booking a taxi seamless, regardless of whichever city you may be in. The app, named Riide, links over 23,000 cars and connects all of the current partners into one system in which customers can hail a taxi at the touch of a few buttons. Collectively, the 19 partners have invested over £1m to get the app up and running. Since its inception, the app has made it possible for over 10,000 journeys each week.

Director of Leicester’s ADT Taxis, David Hunter, was one of the first companies to get on board and promote the development of Riide. He said: “We’ve all dedicated our money and time to the app to see it become a success and we believe it will become the number one choice for booking a taxi.” The local businessman previously developed his own app, Take Me, for ADT users; an exclusive service for business people offering chauffeurs and luxury, eco-friendly cars that has proven successful in the local area. Despite this, David believes whole-heartedly in the new app and has allowed it to replace the already established Take Me.
“It’s basically the British version of Uber, except Riide will be paying its taxes,” David pointed out as Uber has previously been under scrutiny concerning the status of its drivers, workers’ rights, and UK taxes. David’s urge to support the UK in this way is synonymous with the other partner firms and this national spirit reaches into the hearts of each of the firms respective communities. Whichever city a customer may be in, the app will give the option to support that city’s chosen local charity upon each transaction. For Leicester, David has selected Hope Against Cancer: “Although [Hope] don’t know it yet, so this will be a surprise to them! There’s a button on the app that lets you donate an amount to the charity of whichever city you’re in along with your taxi fare. So the customer’s money is going directly back into the local community and supporting Britain too.” Unlike other popular taxi booking apps, Riide will allow its users to pay via cash, card or invoice after setting up an account, which is especially useful for business people. Those in need of a riide can view and track their journey and view previous routes they have taken. They can also view photos and detailed information for each driver using the system, something David is particularly proud of. Every driver is trained to chauffer

standard, adheres to the Public Passenger Services Regulation, and DBS checked (previously CRB). Riiders even have the option to split fares with their fellow passengers using the facility within the app for easy, stress-free, guaranteed fare-shared payment, as well as promotional codes for free journeys. As more taxi companies put their pedal to the medal and join Riide, this cutting-edge taxi app will outshine any other of its kind. Each and every nomination not only represents how a company, employee or organisation has touched the lives of others within the community but also shows an ability to stand out amongst so many others in Leicestershire. Our panel was delighted to see so many nominations this year and admit that although they were prepared to take
the job very seriously, were surprised how difficult the process of whittling down each semi-finalist in each category to just one winner was. The chosen champions will be announced Friday 8th September at the Oscar themed Niche Magazine Business Awards where there will be a full and entertaining
agenda, as well as fundraising which will benefit the awardwinning charity on the night. Here is just a small selection of some of nominees that our judges had the pleasure of meeting at ‘Meet the Judges’ on 28th and 29th June at Leicester Racecourse.

Glenfield Electrical SHORTLISTED FOR TRADE & CONSTRUCTION Glenfield Electrical is on a mission. A mission to be the firm the public call upon for all their electrical needs - and by the looks of things the firm is more than on the right track! Having doubled the workforce since October of last year, the trustworthy team are renowned for honesty, reliability and of course skilled workmanship. The trade and construction award shortlisters are headed up by Directors Phil and Catherine Houlder, who are committed to bringing an exceptional level of customer service to the domestic electrical world and it is this which is propelling the company forward to becoming a household name across the midlands and beyond. “The ethos from the start back in 2012 was to create a firm which people instantly related to home domestic electrical work. I knew
that to do this our customer service had to be the very best and with a skilled and amiable number of team players we are certainly achieving this goal. By creating a great place to work through multi-skilled staff who are all working towards one goal, we feel very optimistic about the future.” On their award nomination Phil comments: ‘We are delighted that we are being recognised like this, to be nominated feels really great and rewards the hard work that myself and the team have put into creating this electrical company with a difference. We are always drawn to positivity and nominations like this just goes to show that creating a company based on the kind of honest foundations that we have can thrive in the industry.” 0116 287 3226 glenfieldelectrical.com

Matthew Ward NOMINATED FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR Matthew Ward has always been ambitious, from the age of 12 he grafted at various jobs, achieved good grades at GCSE and studied hard for three years to become a fully qualified joiner. Only one year later after working in Australia, Matt with his drive for success and pride in making his own way in the world, Matthew woke up one morning and decided he wasn’t content with working for others and decided to utilise his entrepreneurial ways and highly skilled craftsmanship to set up his own joinery business, True Roots Carpentry and Joinery. “My friends thought I was mad to be setting up on my own at such a young age, but I felt ready, I had worked for years, built up a great skill set and decided that if it didn’t work out I would just up sticks and head back to travel and work around Australia!” Matt laughed. Since setting up Matt hasn’t looked back and there has been no time for Australia, with big contracts
in the commercial world of hotels including Malmaison, Hotel Du Vin and the Hilton to name a few as well as domestic work he and his small team of highly skilled carpenters and apprentices work across the country to high praise and exceptional references. Having recently gained the industry’s seal of approval in the shape of a Guild of Master Craftsman membership, True Roots is a company with integrity and reliability at its core. Of his award nomination, Matt said, “I have always been driven by perfection, to provide the very best and recognition like this feels really good! I believe in hard work, and that if you put your mind to something you can make it happen. People often ask me where I get this drive from, but no one knows – my mum says she has no idea! But, I am glad I have it all the same!” 07739 711 174 true-roots.co.uk NICHE | 83

Leicestershire’s pleasantly surprised
TMDP Group
to receive a Niche nomination
For architectural design and construction company TMDP Group, their recent Niche Award Nomination is the icing on the cake as their steady success continues to climb
R
ecognised for the honesty and integrity which runs through each and every project, TMDP Group are making waves in the architectural and construction industry. Their story began in 2004 with current MD Scott Moore taking over the helm in 2011. The forming of an amalgamation of individually thriving industry companies to create TMDP Group, just two years ago in 2015, was the start of this prestigious group. Since then, the group has gone from strength to strength with impressive, steady expansion and they position a holistic, communicative attitude to helping clients achieve success with any project as the key element to their impressive project track record. “We all work with honesty and integrity to deliver first class projects every time, people are realising this with every project we undertake and as a result, our reputation is exactly where we had always hoped it would be - at the top of our field!” MD Scott Moore told us. Through innovation and a commitment to delivering excellence, the group employ the best in their field, create and nurture longterm client relationships and take a realistic, collaborative approach
to everything they do. Scott and the group know the formula for taking the company further, citing ‘education and ongoing support for their team’ as integral elements to their continued growth and moving forward. Scott elaborated; “We know what has taken the group this far in this short time and we know and are committed to investing in the right areas to maintain this healthy growth.” The future is certainly looking bright with plans to continue to grow across all companies within the group and expand throughout targeted counties across the UK. Offering something very rare here in the UK, TMDP Group provide a bespoke service to suit all needs with their in-house architects, building surveying, party wall surveyors, construction, electrical and mechanical services. In addition, they are one of very few companies offering a ‘turn key’ service, meaning they can take their clients through the whole process from start to finish, from concept to completion. This kind of one-stop service allows for absolute focus and the strongest level of communication from client to contractor. Recently, the group have taken on a multi-million-pound project
to design and build a brand-new student apartment complex, in the prestigious New Walk area of Leicester city, which marks the group’s highest number of onsite projects thus far. A record number of projects are currently underway across the Midlands and in the buoyant London and SouthEastern region of the country, making their award nomination a welcome recognition at this busy yet exciting time for the group. Scott’s reaction to his Niche Award Nomination is a view shared by the group. “I am pleasantly surprised and humbled by the recognition the award nomination has given us, TMDP Group. We are a progressive, unique business, and feel pleased our hard work, forward planning and dedication of excellence to our field is being celebrated.” This, combined with their commitment to developing the skill set of their all-important workforce and their simple yet highly effective philosophy of striving for their client’s success, make TMDP Group a Leicestershire force to watch.

The Truth about
Stress A new workplace healthy living scheme that claims to empower employees was put to jury and tested by Cross Productions
F
unction Jigsaw, a multidisciplinary injury management Company based in Wigston Leicestershire, has created the ‘Fit for Industry’ programme. Whether your employees work in an office or on a building site, it is Function Jigsaw’s belief that introducing positive mind and body activities affect employee ability to cope with personal and work stress. The Fit for Industry programme delivers 45 minute talks based on ‘The Truth’ about many important aspects of everyday life, which are followed by 25 minute massages in the workplace over a period of 12 weeks or 12 months. Cross Productions tried it out… Our Coach, Debbie Bliss, has been a Personal Trainer since 1996 and had a career that crossed over many different fields of fitness. In 2014 she wrote a book called ‘Life is Bliss: An Inspirational Story’ after she suddenly contracted an autoimmune disease related to stress called dermatomyositis, which affects just one in a million.
Business
Stress is now the most common cause of long-term absence 45% of long-term illnesses are due to stress, musculoskeletal discomfort or back pain
The debilitating illness left her wondering if she’d ever see her children grow up, ride her horse again or travel the world as she was left paralysed. She went from a marathon runner to a paraplegic in a matter of months yet she learnt to walk again, eat again, and talk again. She’s still affected by the disease that is largely associated with stress so it’s very important for her to stay calm in all situations. We’d say that makes her an expert on stress! Her interactive talk, ‘The Truth about Stress’, was very audience involved as we shared our own personal stress triggers, which was a great team building exercise as we got to know more about each other that we wouldn’t get the chance to discover under normal circumstances. She taught us about ‘zoning’ and mindfulness: putting things into perspective and focussing on the here and now. This is because as humans we tend to worry about the past and the future but rarely focus on the present, which is strongly linked with depression, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, digestion, skin problems, sleep… the list goes on!
The talk was inspirational and has stayed with each of us often being an office talking point. As a team we’re in it together and have been reminding each other to take time out and asking each other if we’ve had breakfast and so on. And with massages to follow, our team has felt far more relaxed, have had advice on muscle and joint complaints, and overall, an incredibly positive experience. 0116 340 0255 info@functionjigsaw.co.uk functionjigsaw.co.uk
Debbie’s words echoed what we already knew about health and fitness but in many ways we had forgotten or pushed to the back of our minds. It takes someone to sit you down and remind you of the importance of breakfast, nutrition, the psychology behind food packaging, the impact of stress and the need to gain perspective on a situation. Events not to

W
ith over ten years’ experience in the industry and a wealth of contacts, services and skills to ensure any event or party is the roaring success it deserves to be, B Events are the team who can make it happen. Leicester’s business economy is on the up and so our company directors may be short on time for organising and planning that Christmas party, large conference, gala, charity dinner or awards ceremony. B Events have all the tools in their belt to make a personalised, successful event happen including the planning and co-ordination from start to finish for anything from 2 to 2,000 attendees. They design, plan, organise, decorate and take care of it all, leaving the hosts free to sit back, relax and enjoy the event themselves. 88 | NICHE
High quality lighting, drapes and luxury table centre pieces as well as VIP carpets and themed props are all at their client’s disposal to ensure the event looks the part. Working alongside their sister company B Audio Visual, B Events can take care of the technicalities too. The experts can create themed events include the Las Vegas theme as seen at the Niche Awards 2016, or there is Moroccan nights, Hollywood, Wild West and even secret agent themes as well as whatever the client dreams up – all to be carried out with finesse, style and attention to detail. Niche Magazine’s business award ceremony 2016 was assisted by B Events. Niche Magazine and Cross Productions Director Jenny Cross said last year: “B Events assisted us with the brilliant Las Vegas themed look for the awards and supplied all the amazing centre pieces and
props - including an illuminated Elvis and the stunning Las Vegas sign - the finishing touches that really set things off. We felt assured they had it all under control from the start, all they needed was a brief and the rest was taken care of. We will be calling on their services time and time again I am sure.” And indeed, the Cross Productions team did call upon the eventing specialists for The Great Leicestershire Charity Ball that was held in The Kube at Leicester Racecourse in June, for which B Events provided some truly fabulous table centre pieces, chair covers and a sensational dressed entranceway. The skilled team co-ordinate as little or as much as a company would like including travel and accommodation for guests, on-site assistance, audio equipment, venue sourcing and concept planning. Not
We felt assured they had it all under control from the start, all they needed was a brief
solely reserved for large corporate events though, B Events also plan smaller parties too – ideal for those who want to pull off the best party without any of the stress and worry that can come along with it. Always aiming for the WOW factor, they are cool, calm and collected throughout with the one aim to ensure everything runs to client brief, leaving guests delighted and suitably impressed. 0116 275 1099 bav-events.co.uk NICHE | 89
Sport A summer of sport in Leicester Dave smith gives us the low down on our home teams When it comes to summer sports in Leicester then thoughts tend to turn towards cricket and speedway. However, it has tended to be world events that are getting pulses racing at the moment rather than the efforts of the local teams. At Grace Road, there have been plenty of thrills on offer in the Women’s World Cup where England have been in action. Thrills have not been so plentiful for the Foxes though as they continue to struggle at the wrong end of Division Two in the County Championship. Having said that, the team almost pulled off a win with a record fourth innings total
against Northamptonshire but fell agonisingly three runs short of that elusive victory despite clocking up a massive 391 runs in the final innings of the game. At Beaumont Park the Lions also continue to struggle at the wrong end of the Elite League. It seems that whatever combination of riders are signed to the club, fortunes doggedly refuse to turn in Leicester’s favour. Instead, Lions’ fans are once again avidly following the fortunes of former skipper Jason Doyle in the World Championship Grand Prix series, where the popular Aussie is once again challenging for the crown.
Top class sport is also on offer at Leicester Racecourse, where the fare on offer is so much more than of the equine variety. In an attempt to broaden interest and increase attendances, there is now so much more family-oriented entertainment on offer in Oadby, where the recent Ladies’ Day saw headline act All Saints provide the evening concert after the action on-track had concluded. And, of course, since it is now July, football will be back in full swing before we know it with the Foxes already having returned for pre-season training, while Tigers’ fans have been avidly following the fortunes of the British and Irish Lions down in New Zealand. Sometimes it feels like the winter fare never actually stops …

The World Athletics Championships Five years after we were all glued to the Olympic Games in London, the second biggest athletics event in the world, the World Championships, is heading to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, along with their Para Athletics equivalent. Once again Usain Bolt and Mo Farah are expected to prove the main attractions. Farah will attempt to defend both his 5,000 and 10,000 metre crowns, while Britain’s Laura Muir will also be looking to cement her reputation on the world stage. Bolt has stated that these games will be his international swansong and he only intends to compete in the 100 metres and relay this time around. Can he go out in a suitable blaze of glory? But just in case you thought that the retirement of the Jamaican will leave a huge void in the sport, then watch out for the next genuine world superstar: Wayde van Niekerk. The South African has already run world class times over 100, 200, 300 and 400 metres and looks set to dominate the track scene over the next few years. He might turn out to be more of a ‘Michael Johnson’ than a ‘Usain Bolt’, but he is exactly what athletics needs at this moment and I, for one, will be watching him perform with interest in London – bring it on! Only five Overfinch Land Rover Defenders exist worldwide. The enhancement specialists describe its version of the iconic 4x4 as ‘reinvented by the world’s leading Land Rover tuner, creating a heavy blend of capability, individuality and luxury’. Such a unique vehicle requires authoritative care, which is why we have teamed up with Leicester’s car detailing hidden gem, Reep Midlands. Reep Midlands has become known in the luxury and supercar industry as an almost private members club for vehicles delivering spa-like detailing treatment using only exclusive products. At Fox Land Rover servicing centre, our partnership with Reep Midlands meant we could offer an elite care package for the extremely rare Land Rover Defender Overfinch that drove through our gates. As partners it is essential that we share the same values, level of service, confidentiality, and recognition that owning a Land Rover is also to be part of a way of life. The exceptional vehicle felt most at home in the Great British countryside where Fox is based and its owner felt at home in our quirky reception while we got to work on its service using only Land Rover parts and Land Rover trained technicians before the rare beauty of the Defender Overfinch departed for some pampering over at Reep Midlands where it had PPF and Gtechniq applied for ultimate paint protection. What’s going on?
We hear you cry, well, quite a bit as it happens Here’s our roundup of recent and upcoming happenings in and around our city The hugely popular monthly street food party, Canteen, returned on the 30th June to tasty acclaim and it wasn’t just about the food. We were entertained with DJs, sipped on real ales and cocktails and enjoyed feasts from Baked in Brick whose 24-hour marinated Chicken Tikka complete with flatbreads baked in a converted 1964 Mini Cooper – yum! Canoodle brought us dairy, gluten and nut free delights and The English Indian served up their unique classics with a twist style food. Pluk’d catered for the chicken lover with the very best in gourmet chicken wings whilst The Italian Stallion more than satisfied the pizza die-hards with their woodfired authentic delights. For those with a sweet tooth (all of us then!) Platinum Pancakes served up fresh pancakes with passion and flair. Look 102 | NICHE
out for next month’s Canteen, it really is a foodie heaven. A new toy store hit town with the opening of Toys R’ Us in the Highcross causing quite the stir amongst our kids and their grandparents looking to spoil them. The superstore can be found on the ground floor on the Highcross and is fast becoming the toy mecca for children looking to spend their pocket money - or their parent’s money for that matter! Other new beginnings include Winstanley House. Having recently opened the country residence for both large and intimate wedding celebrations with not one but two contemporary and elegant ballrooms, a courtyard, marquee
space and 19 beautiful hotel rooms, the Winstanley family residence can now be enjoyed by all. Oadby has a slice of 5-star Indian Cuisine in the shape of Tipu Sultan, with a hugely popular 5 star restaurant in Birmingham already, the firm is expanding its offering with the Oadby restaurant and we are delighted they chose our region for their new branch. Sumptuous surroundings and food to match, Tipu Sultan is fit for a ….. Sultan. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to more Indian cuisine for the exciting Kazzoo Curry and Quiz at The Parcel Yard in Leicester to raise money for Hope Against Cancer. Capacity App:
A going out game-changer Niche meets local entrepreneur Lee Quinn as he launches ground-breaking app, Capacity, throughout Loughborough, Leicester, Liverpool and beyond
A
35-year-old student studying Sports Coaching at Loughborough University, Lee had an idea and ran with it for an app that changed the way we socialise on a night out. “I had the idea about 18 months ago for an app that was a solution to the problem of never knowing how busy a location was before you went to it. The times me and my friends would decide on somewhere, plan it all, park, arrive and then discover there was no room at the Inn was becoming a far too common, inconvenient issue!” Armed with his idea, he approached the Loughborough Business Enterprise Hub, who were nothing but supportive of his venture from the start. “I mentioned 104 | NICHE
my idea and from the get go, they were right behind me and introduced me to the right people to make it happen, I actually don’t think it would have ever been more than an idea if they hadn’t have encouraged me and introduced me to the team we have now!” Lee enthused. Fast forward to a year and a half later and the app is already up and running in Loughborough, Leicester and soon to be Liverpool. “The response has been so positive so far, bars and restaurants are getting on board thick and fast knowing its value to them as a venue in keeping their patrons informed. They like how easy it is for them to use a clicker system as people set foot in their venue and how they can keep
in touch with their potential patrons at their fingertips,” Lee told us. The app, which monitors the capacity of bars, restaurants and clubs in a given area such as Club Republic, Chutney Ivy or The Donkey Bar, allows users to track how busy a place is before making the effort to get to the location, the app even allows for users to see how much parking at the venue is available and get directions. The app developer has also formed partnership with local taxi firm Ashley David Taxis (ADT). Capacity users are now able to book an ADT taxi to their chosen venue through the evening planning app. The new relationship means that both companies will gain promotion
through each other’s apps and clientele. Lee said: “When ADT send texts out to their customers [to confirm booking] they send out a link to our app, which means it is going out to 10,000 people a week.” Transforming the way we conduct our social nights out, the app is one of its kind and is already making waves as a necessity for locations across the country. A game changer for users and venues alike, Capacity allows for the venues to keep tabs on how busy they are at specific times and days of the week, allowing for a clearer picture of staffing needs and stock levels, it really is a leap into the way that
technology can really help small to medium sized businesses. Lee’s journey to app success hasn’t been without a few challenges along the way, especially when you consider he has been studying and supporting his young family at the same time, but, he is testament to what demanding work can produce if you put your mind to it. Winning awards and making a name for himself in the local business network, Lee is set to take Capacity to, well, its full Capacity.
The times we would decide on somewhere, plan it, arrive and then discover there was no room at the Inn was becoming far too common

How Scottish composer Martin Dalby celebrated his 75th birthday
‘I
was worried that people would leave to hear them playing upstairs,’ Martin Dalby told me after sharing that he’d celebrated his 75th birthday this year in a rather unique way. The Scottish Music Centre arranged an evening interview to honour him. “There was wine and cake and it went very well – nobody threw anything at me anyway. Peter Seivewright told me it was a joyful occasion with an element of greatness to it.” But Martin’s uncharacteristic nerves flared up when he discovered the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, ‘which was once mine’ he explained, would begin playing in the hall upstairs half way through his celebrations. Despite his anxieties, the Scottish-born composer was eager to be involved in the once in a lifetime event.
who learnt from Brahms. “So what’s fascinating is that Oliver is a great, great grand-pupil of Johannes Brahms!”
His interviewer, Oliver Searle has accomplished many feats including a number of music projects for people using cochlear implants, his creation of theatre music, and attaining the position of Chairman of the Scottish Music Centre and a lecturing post at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. And he is none other than one of Martin’s very own pupils of many years ago. “I taught Oliver and he was always one who stood out to me,” Martin beams with pride. Martin was taught by Herbert Howells who was the pupil of Charles Villiers Stanford
happening if it weren’t for Martin.’ In 1979 he fought alongside others including MPs John Smith and Donald Drewar to keep the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra alive after it was threatened, along with four other BBC house orchestras, by funding issues. “I worked hard to make sure it didn’t happen. Along with others I got some Scottish MPs together, organised a select committee in the House of Commons and pushed to the press what was happening. People generally thought it was London who was making the decision but it was Scotland.” These
106 | NICHE
Although the pair had spent many hours preparing for the April evening, Martin regrets to tell me that he chose to miss a large part of his life out of the live interview. “I should have said more about the BBC but I have spoken so much about my career there already and I wanted to talk more about the real me.” But hearing what he has to say next, he can perhaps consider the BBC as a creative and political outlet for the ‘real Martin’. During the live interview with his ex-pupil, an audience member admiringly stated ‘there’s a concert going on upstairs and it wouldn’t be
efforts helped protect the Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the strike in 1980 saw that just two of five threatened orchestras were affected. During the strike, BBC employees, including Martin’s future wife, Hilary, would play music outside the BBC Scotland office building where he would be frowned at by his bosses for buying coffees for the strikers. It was in 1965 that the Scottish composer’s career began with the BBC after being interviewed by a big high-powered line-up that included Peter Gould, William Gloch and Hans Keller. He was appointed as a music producer for the Music Programme, later to be known as Radio 3. Some years later he would be asked to become Head of Music, BBC Scotland and would win a Sony Gold Award for producing
Scotland’s Music in 1972 for his hugely influential and creative role. “My job at the BBC was to support other artists. I hope I fulfilled it. Part of the policy, which to an extent I had inherited, was to give young people you’d never heard of, a chance to get their career on the road. I think I achieved that. Many of them are still going now.” Although choosing to elude such a significant period of his life in the hour-long interview, he and Oliver managed to fit in discussions of his compositions, inspirations
and education. Much discussion focussed on inspiration taken from women as many pieces have been motivated by female figures. Music even brought love into his life when he gave Hilary, a young violinist, a job in the Scottish Symphony Orchestra. One score of his, Antoinette Alone (1980) was written after being inspired by the Jean Rhys novel Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) based on Jane Eyre’s ‘madwoman in the attic’ (1847), whose character fascinated Martin. “I also talked about my time before the BBC. During my two year Caird scholarship travelling with L’Accademia di Napoli Complesso we performed 10 Sketches for Strings by Nikos Skalkottas,” he explains to me, “I’d rarely heard of this man before and his music
just blew me away. I went and studied his style and technique and adopted quite a lot of it in my own music.” Scottish music critic Conrad Wilson once described Martin as ‘the chameleon of Scottish music’ due to his diverse portfolio of work, which he explained didn’t upset him as he ‘writes for the occasion.’ Throughout his career Martin worked with and met musical greats such as Hans Keller, John Drummond, Herbert Howells and John Ogdon. He’s also enjoyed composing and performing for documentaries and films.
Continuing from this, his close friend John Purser, who wrote and presented Scotland’s Music, commented that Martin’s music contains thoughtful messages. Martin proposes The Marybean (1991) as a fine example of this given that the Mary bean; a malachan bean found in the Caribbean that travels with the North Atlantic Drift, is thought to bring luck to those who come across it. He was commissioned to write the piece for the centenary of the Scottish National Orchestra (SNO) and offered The Mary Bean as a symbol of good fortune for the rest of their years. Now retired, the admired composer said: “I haven’t composed in a long time. All composers are feeling the tension I think. When I joined
the BBC the whole of Britain was creating modern music all the time but I think it’s died off quite a bit.” Reflecting on his life in front of an audience brimming with fellow composers has been a whirlwind experience for Martin but ultimately he hopes that he was able to deliver Oliver with an education that was up to the standards of Brahms. A poignant birthday celebration to say the least.

A guide to buying art The first thing many of our gallery visitors apologetically splutter, even before getting through the door is ‘sorry, I don’t know anything about art’. Well neither did the two Cocker Spaniels that popped in for a sniff with their owner, but they still enjoyed their visit. Joking aside, we completely understand, art is one of things that falls in the the same category as opera, classical music and fine wine - a shrouded subject coveted by an exclusive intellectual few. Recently, we were invited to the Opera, and blurted out the same line, feeling as inadequate as a tabloid hack at the Poet Laurette awards. I know nothing about music, I can barely draw a treble clef, but I still log in to iTunes. I simply disregard what doesn’t tickle my musical fancy and search for the tunes that do. Now apply that same template to art. It can often be the title that sways it for me, it can make me smile or simply uplift me. We play our part by talking to you about the artist, their methods, their inspiration and add depth and value to your chosen piece. Antidote’s Plain Easy guide to buying art is. ◆ Find a reputable gallery (we happen to be a really friendly one in Lutterworth). ◆ Browse, engage, soak it up see what captivates you. for Bamboozle Charity
the £70K challenge of a lifetime
T
he co-founder of pioneering Leicesterbased charity Bamboozle Theatre Company, which creates magical experiences for profoundly disabled children and has been recognised internationally, will turn 70 in June next year. To celebrate, he has pledged to raise a hefty £70,000 for the charity before his 70th birthday in 2018 and has committed to tackling three awesomely challenging tasks to do so. The three quests will be taken on in the six weeks leading up to Christopher Davies’ 70th birthday. The fundraising campaign will last a year and culminate with the trials during which Christopher and his supporters will cycle across the Pyrenees from Pau in France to Barcelona, take on the National Three Peaks Challenge climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in just 24 hours, and complete a marathon around Leicester Racecourse and a delicious BBQ afterwards with 110 | NICHE
thanks to the racecourse’s General Manager Rob Bracken. Theatre director, writer and educator Christopher co-founded Bamboozle in 1994 with Sue Pyecroft. The charity tours schools and theatres putting on stimulating performances for children with serious learning and physical disabilities. Bamboozle also run an acclaimed training programme and a programme that focusses on ‘ways to engage students with autism.’ In 2017 Bamboozle began training practitioners in Shanghai, Singapore, Melbourne and the Sydney Opera House as well as in many venues in the UK. Natasha Davies, Fundraising Support said: “There is very little out there for profoundly disabled children and their families. It can take carers two hours to get out of the house so our performances have to be worth it.” Each show and workshop transforms the stage, wherever that may be,
70seventy sponsor
as well as the auditorium into a multisensory world of opportunities for children who actually become part of the show themselves. A song at the beginning of the performances welcomes every child and dedicates individual attention from the actors to each of them. One show, The Girl and the Goat had a small audience of six children. Set in India, the show introduced iconographic sights, cultural sounds, and smells of herbs and spices. “Parents and carers are asked to take a step back and let their child experience the show in their own way, which can be hard for them to let go for that period of time. These performances engage these children where other parts of society really don’t, and they are very important to these kids’ lives,” Natasha explained. The Bamboozle team hope that with the support of the business community and general public, Christopher will achieve his £70,000 target by next year. Christopher
said: “We are delighted that already the business community are coming on board. Vanilla Recruitment is the lead sponsor of the Three Peaks Challenge, May Marketing has designed the logo, Leicester Racecourse is providing the venue for the Marathon and of course Niche Magazine are our Media Sponsor. This essential support will be helping the disabled children of Leicestershire and their families.” Launched on Christopher’s 69th birthday on the 21st June 2017, Bamboozle are in the planning stages of setting up the three major challenges (and more) welcoming everyone to take part throughout the year until the close of the campaign on 23rd June 2018; the closest possible weekend date to Christopher’s 70th birthday. During the course of the focussed fundraiser, the Bamboozle team and their charity sponsors will be using the hashtag 70Seventy to promote the movement and the events that will follow. And there’s still time for you to get involved! Keep an eye out for how to take part in each of Christopher’s challenges and help him accomplish #70Seventy. Or, if you’re a business leader, get in touch to find out how you can sponsor this important charity and increase your corporate social responsibility too.
These performances engage these children where other parts of society really don’t.
THE POWER OF THEATRE Drawing from influences including Dorothy Heathcote’s work around drama and education, over 25 years of classroom and drama advisory practice and experience, as well as the understanding of models of intensive interaction (II) and neurolinguistic programming practice, Bamboozle’s methodology has been well documented in books and resources written by cofounder Christopher Davies. 0116 255 2065 bamboozletheatre.co.uk natasha@bamboozle.co.uk NICHE | 111

A care home got into the neighbourly spirit this week by celebrating European Neighbours’ Day in Melton Mowbray
Extending a neighbourly spirit The Amwell, a new all-inclusive, residential, nursing, dementia and respite care home in Asfordby Road, invited friends and family of the home and local European community groups for a special European lunch. The cuisine for guests and residents included a menu of European inspired canapés and dishes, freshly made by the home’s in-house head chef Sarah Tongs and her team. European Neighbours’ Day originated in Paris in 2000 providing the opportunity to reconnect with the values of solidarity, brotherhood
and friendship which should be at the forefront of neighbourly relations. The idea of the day is simple in that residents invite their neighbours over for a nice lunch or buffet enhancing social cohesion and bringing neighbourhoods closer together. More than 30 million participants have benefited from this idea across 36 countries around the world. The Amwell care home manager Chris Batty said: “We were delighted to welcome various European community groups for a special lunch at The Amwell. We have only
been open a short while and are keen to forge strong bonds with the local community. “We liked the idea of European Neighbours’ Day and its desire to promote living better together, with no borders. The lunch saw a fantastic turnout and the residents of The Amwell enjoyed meeting so many new faces. Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.” 01664 882 525 theamwellcare.com info@theamwellcare.com

Cross Connections Business Expo One whole day of powerful business networking took place Friday 19th May at Leicester Racecourse’s venue The Kube. Cross Connections was Cross Productions’ first ever business expo, the all-day event was built around the likes, dislikes and suggestions of many previous business expo attendees. Cross Connections aimed to make the expo flexible, accessible and affordable with a selection of great foods, fantastic facilities, friendly services and host of options to give exhibitors the best chance to show themselves off. Sixty businesses showcased what they had to offer in the hall of The Kube, not only did exhibitors enjoy a steady footfall of guests but were to able connect with each other and provide further business connections. On top, four guest speakers; Barrie Stephen, Ed Truman, Hema Mistry and Alastair Campbell, enlightened guests and business leaders throughout the day with current topics of interest. Cross Productions is grateful to and was delighted to see headline sponsor accountants Torr Waterfield exhibiting on the day.

Sponsors and Ambassadors night By the time you read this the Niche Business Awards finalists will have been announced in readiness for the main event in September, where gongs are dished out on stage at The Athena, Leicester. A record number of quality nominations meant that the judging process was tough, ‘Meet the Judges’ held at Leicester Racecourse whittled down the candidates to the final three in each category. All of the independent judging panels are made up of the sponsors and ambassadors of the awards, to whom we are incredibly grateful for support, time and efforts in the whole process. To show thanks a summer Sponsors and Ambassadors event was held at Hotel Maiyango, with cocktail and canapes served to our esteemed guests. It’s always a fun and relaxed function, a great opportunity for likeminded business people to meet in an informal atmosphere. Special thanks to headline sponsor Cambridge & Counties Bank and to Kinetal Media for capturing the event on video, to view visit our blog or facebook page.

North Bar & Kitchen North Bar & Kitchen opened its doors to the local business community for an exclusive lunchtime event recently. The venue has launched an exciting new A la Carte menu as well as a revised lunch menu, inviting local business owners to sample the venue and enjoy a 3-course meal. The Hinckley Road restaurant provided very flexible accommodation with networking and welcome drinks in the bar before being seated in the main restaurant for lunch. Sally Davis, proprietor, addressed the guests speaking about the offerings at North before introducing Sarah Harrison, city centre director. Sarah gave an informative presentation on the planning and proposed developments in our city. “We wanted to show guests that North is a business venue as well as a restaurant, we have delegate day rate and the venue can be used privately for corporate events. We also wanted to show that a good quality lunch can be served efficiently for those needing to watch the clock, says Sally.

Family Business United’s Road Trip The #FBRoadtrip 2017 hit the road on 24th April touring around some of the UK’s most successful family run businesses to celebrate the essential contribution family firms make to national GDP and regional economies. And right here in Leicestershire we are lucky enough to be home to Sturgess Motor Group. The leading car dealer is one of the most respected names in UK motor retailing and is also one of the oldest family-operated dealers, set up in 1897 by Walter E. Sturgess. Leicester’s family-run motor dealership Sturgess kindly provided the car for the six week road trip and after celebrating 120 years in business this year, FBU held one of the tour’s family dinners and networking events in the salubrious Narborough Road showroom. The guests at Sturgess were treated to a 3 course meal and grand tour giving a remarkable insight into the Royal Warrant Holding family firm; a fantastic way to showcase what Sturgess has brought to Leicester and what FBU is all about.
