A Word from the Editor

As the nights are drawing in and the days are getting colder we begin to start thinking about prepping for Christmas. From booking the Christmas party, ordering the turkey to buying gifts for loved ones. This issue we have a whole host of great ideas from stocking fillers to great places to eat out. We also take a look at how secure our homes are this winter with expert advice from national security experts Abel who, as a third generation business, have all the tools to keep us safe. It’s been an exciting few weeks of events with Leicester Business Festival the region’s largest business event with more than 130 events over the two week period covering a whole array of hot topics. With more than 12,500 attendees each year this festival showcases the prosperity, innovation and growth that shows Leicester and Leicestershire is the heart of UK Business. With our first big Christmas in the city, there is so much happening and the festive cheer reaches out across Leicester with our friends Steamin’ Billy launching their 12th pub The White Horse in Atherstone which we are sure will become known for its stone baked pizza oven steaks and burgers with real ales. We have become the official media sponsor for Hope Against Cancer and have had the inside scoop on how much they have going on as we look forward to the Hope Christmas Lunch on 8th November, the Fashion Show on the 16th as well as their Christmas Party on 8th December, which will see more than 20 different businesses come together to party in style while supporting clinical research right here in Leicester. This being the last issue of Niche for 2017 it’s been one hell of a year, a great journey and a massive learning curve. We look forward to seeing you all in 2018 with some new features and sharp advice from some of our most recognised professionals. Have a happy Christmas and a lovely New Year. Love

A new generation in

Jewellery

A new collection at Groby’s independent jewellers marks the beginning of a new era for the company

Cathy Stephens launches ‘and daughters’ Thursday 23rd November 2pm-9pm

T

he Grace collection is the latest addition to the Cathy Stephens Jewellery showroom that recently underwent an elegant refurbishment. Grace combines the natural, fluid style of Cathy herself with the sleek, minimal form produced by Tiffany; Cathy’s daughter, one of four, who joined the company this year following in her mother’s footsteps as a jewellery maker.

Pippa and Tiffany have described Cathy Stephens Jewellery as a family business in the truest sense of the term. The siblings have worked in the shop when called upon since the age of 14. Workshop manager Chris and shop manager Sam have also worked for the company for over 30 years branding them part of the family, having seen the two girls growing up and honing their skills.

The Cathy Stephens brand formed in 1979 after the young creative enrolled on a degree in art and design at Loughborough College. Cathy went on to fashion her own brand whilst husband Michael sold her unique creations.

“We’re a family that works together. We’ve grown up with each other so we all have a vested interest in the jewellery we make and want to deliver the best.”

Cathy’s eldest daughter Pippa Arkle Stephens, who has run the business for the past 8 years said: “Our most recent collection, Grace, is a collaboration between mother and daughter and celebrates Tiffany’s new position. The collection features platinum and diamonds and is elegant and graceful. Grace is Tiffany’s middle name so we felt it was perfect to call it such. Tiffany is learning Cathy’s skills and growing her own talent and style. Whereas Tiffany uses clean lines and minimal design, Cathy’s style is very flowing and organic. You can see both influences in each piece.” This year, Pippa believed it was time the business underwent a renovation 08 | NICHE

symbolising the next generation of Cathy Stephens Jewellery. The newlook showroom and website were put into action once Tiffany’s role in the company became official. Along with Cathy and Tiffany’s handmade pieces Pippa has also introduced a new diamond collection chosen to complement, but also contrast with Cathy’s many collections. The beautifully refurbished design studio offers an exciting, welcoming and comfortable space for all three family members to create unique, bespoke designs at their customers’ behest. You cannot help but feel inspired!

All members of the team have a specialised role within the design, making and marketing of each piece. Cathy Stephens Jewellery offers silver, gold and unusual stone collections as well as select collections from other manufacturers to provide a little something for everyone, and with Tiffany now on board as well, there are collections to suit every taste. See the collection on the website or see instore for yourself and discover a diverse range of styles on display with Cathy and Tiffany’s distinctive signature styles, and a host of other individually chosen pieces. 0116 287 0041 cathystephens.co.uk

Hair vs Skin Tone So, you want to change up your look and are currently deciding on your next hair colour – great! However, there are a few factors that you should be considering. Along with your lifestyle, hair maintenance levels and style, it’s important to choose a shade that will compliment your skin tone. This doesn’t need to be complicated - our fabulous stylists at Barrie Stephen Hair know all about what suits who! But here’s a little run-down. The fundamental rule when finding the perfect hair colour for you is to assess your skin tone and eye colour. Generally, everyone will either fall into the cool, warm or neutral categories. If you have a cool eye colour and warm skin tone, or vice versa, then you’re what we’d call colour neutral and you’re lucky enough for most tones to sit comfortably with your skin. Look at your inner elbow, or just under your jaw towards your ear. These two parts of the body are the truest representation of your natural tone. For that pale, English rose complexion, coppers and reds with orange undertones work perfectly to add warmth and look gorgeous in the colder months. For olive and darker skin tones, we tend to advise rich tones such as mid-brown to dark-blonde which are natural and comfortable against these deep skin tones. Try to stick to staying just a couple of shades lighter or darker than your roots! Neil Smith 0116 402 6222 barriestephenhair.co.uk

Remodelling your jewellery Through the use of workshop tours and design shows, our team at Cathy Stephens Jewellery are able to create bespoke commissioned pieces for customers. After demonstrating the range of skills our jewellery makers possess and delivering informative talks, customers often come to us with requests to either update their existing jewellery, which they perhaps inherited or were gifted, or they may have an idea about the perfect ring or necklace that they would like us to make a reality. Our talents in each department and stage that is involved in the process of jewellery making – from design to setting – are extensive but there is a common misconception that old items can be melted down and redesigned into completely new pieces. Unless an item is 22 carat gold, often this is not possible. However, if you have a ring that has been inherited that is not quite to your style and tastes but holds sentimental value, we can look to adapt this into a pair of earrings for example. Design can be limitless and if you have a vision, our team is here to help bring it to life as a ‘new’ bespoke piece. Come in any time to discuss your ideas with us, or visit us from Saturday 25th November to Sunday 3rd December for our Christmas design show week. Beau ca i t e h t s Ae rejuvenate themselves

Beau Aesthetica enjoy a revamp of their clinic front whilst we enjoy a make-over of our own to get ready for party season

I

f you, like us, are getting ready for party season there is so much more than a manicure that we have under our belts to help you achieve the very best, polished version of yourself. It may look like those celebs in the glossies just turned up to the red carpet looking a million dollars, but we know that behind the scenes there are a host of treatments and procedures they call upon to get them to that A list beauty status. At Beau Aesthetica in Stoneygate the friendly and experienced team have a host of treatments and tricks the celebs use to get ‘A’ List ready and you can enjoy a celeb make-over too. If you have visited the clinic before you will have noticed that just recently, Beau Aesthetica have undergone a make-over themselves with a shop front revamp. Company Director Am Vadhesha told us of the change: “From the very beginning I wanted to create a place in which people felt comfortable to visit and we have definitely achieved this. Our clients enjoy treatments every day and we decided it was time for our clinic to enjoy the same!” Remaining loyal to the image they have that

is already very successful, the new spruce up is exactly that, a little spruce and we think it looks great. So, what treatments can you have to get party ready? We chatted with Am to find out. To start off she told us how to tackle losing those extra inches which makes slipping into that LBD all the nicer doesn’t it? She says a suitable place to start is with the ‘Honey I shrunk Wrap’, “It’s a Beau go-to in the run up to any event where you want to lose those pesky last couple of inches making that dress feel more fabulous! It’s pain free and a firm favourite of many a celebrity before they hit the red carpet, why shouldn’t you enjoy the same? Targeting those classic ‘problem areas’ such as the thighs, buttocks and abdomen, the wrap uses lipolysis which breaks down fat cells where triglycerides are changed to free fatty acids allowing them to be excreted in tissue fluid and onto the lymph vessels and out.” Am told us. “For those who want a little more than an inch or two in shrinkage, Lipo by Vaser is another go-to for the celebs. The minimally invasive ultrasound technology is a precision

procedure which gets real, visible results from the very first session. Wave goodbye to those love handles that simply will not budge!” Then it’s onto complexion and the team have a glowing reputation for procedures and facials to get that sought after youthful glowing complexion, “A facial is a must and I am a huge fan of the latest in technologies in the world of beauty. The recent addition of the latest Comcit Crystal Machine is making waves in the Beau clinic and is fast becoming my personal anti-aging weapon favourite; it’s quick and produces astounding results from the very first timeclients enjoy glowing, plumper more refined age defying skin.” Microblading is perhaps the most exciting development in the beauty world recently, especially for those of us whose brows are on the thin side of the scale at least. This is the answer to those of us who painstakingly have to create or fill in our brows every single morning. The semi-permanent procedure uses a very fine blade to deposit pigments into the epidermis. “Because the pigment we add is close to the surface the strokes appear fine and

crisp. The pigments used to add colour are all formulated to match original brow colours and the results are amazing.” Am explained. Fuller, natural looking brows which can last up to 18 months? Yes please! So, now that’s the inches lost, the skin perfected and the eyebrows covered it’s time for the finishing touches. “A good mani pedi goes a long way to complete the look and using Gel finishes we can make it last for not just one but a number of parties. Then, there’s the waxing. Getting super smooth might not seem as essential in the colder months as the summer ones but it can save so much time and effort over the winter party season and smooth skin always feels better doesn’t it?” We couldn’t agree more Am! Beau Aesthetica have a repertoire of treatments to help you look and feel your best for party season. So, make like the celebs and pamper yourself to red carpet perfection ahead of the festivities this year. 0116 270 9141 beauaesthetica.com NICHE | 17

Experts in colour

Up your brow game

Wellbeing in the cold

Did you know our salons at Leicester and Oadby boast an impressive five stylists who have qualified as Wella Professional Master Colour Experts (MCEs)? Charlie, Sharon and Kerry (Leicester), and Lauren and Ellie (Oadby) have all achieved one of the industry’s most accredited colour awards. Lauren, who passed the qualification in August said: “Travelling to the Manchester Wella Studios and taking time out of my busy salon schedule to complete the gruelling four-stage course was tough to say the least but so worth it! From the intense classes, written and practical exams, homework and revision, to working creatively alongside some of the biggest names in the hairdressing world, the journey has been amazing!”

It’s funny to consider that once upon a time we were all plucking our eyebrows to within an inch of their life a la Kate Moss when these days, full thick, groomed brows are all the rage! But, what if you were an overplucker and those hairs just won’t grow back? What if you haven’t the time to painstakingly ‘draw on’ your brows every single morning?

There is something extra special to me about using nourishing health and wellbeing products on myself and my family in the colder months. I want to share with you some of my personal picks from the exciting autumn/winter collections from Arbonne out now.

Completing the course has not only expanded our stylists’ knowledge and confidence, but also allowed them to gain inside information on what’s next to come in the fashion and hairdressing world. By attending the annual Wella Colour Congress they had a sneaky peak of what’s next to come in our industry - keeping us ahead of the competition. So what’s hot in colour for autumn/ winter 2017? Colour contouring is a great way to have a completely bespoke colour service. From freehand application to cleverly placed high and low lights, the technique can create softer facial features or accentuate certain areas. We’re loving the rich, warm tones in our Illumina pallet. Their dusty hues give a modern feel, with a sheer finish. Amanda Fall 0116 255 3573 khhair-leicester.co.uk 18 | NICHE

MICROBLADING is the answer to your brow prayers. It’s changing the face of brows, literally. Giving women and men everywhere their brows back and upping their brow game, microblading is a semi-permanent make-up which introduces small surface tattoos through careful strokes mimicking the natural individual hair. Filling in existing brows for a bolder ‘made-up’ look and introducing hair strokes where they don’t; microblading lasts up to two years if cared for well. The process starts with a ‘mapping’ of the face where we work out the right shape for an individual based on their face measurements, we then draw on the brows using a brow pencil to show how it will look. The treatment then takes anywhere up to three hours and many report a discomfort rather than pain from the process. Besides, clients are usually so thrilled with the results the discomfort is quickly forgotten!

The infamous ‘Arbonne glow’ is enhanced further with the new Sheer Glow Highlighter stick which is gorgeously pigmented and contains countless skin loving ingredients too. To ensure the whole family’s skin is protected during winter I recommend the new large family size Shea butter wash and body lotion for extra moisturised skin featuring Vitamin E, lots of minerals and of course Shea butter; it’s serious moisturising power for everyone. I’m so excited about the Rescue and Renew Essential Oils! Used in diffusers within the home they help promote cleaner, fresher air. Lemon and peppermint to invigorate, lavender relaxes, and my absolute favourite Harmony Blend features orange, lavender, juniper berry and ginger for an overall sense of balance and wellbeing.

Up your brow game and pop in for a consultation today! Am Vadhesha

Then there are the exciting festive collections with giftables perfect for everyone in your life. Centred on sharing joy and bringing the brightness of the season to one another, a purchase from the collection includes an option to donate a charge to Change Starts with Me! A self-esteem project for teenagers - so your Arbonne gift keeps on giving. Bev Sankey

Surviving life’s hardships

How to cope and help others to cope when life throws us unexpectedly into emotional chaos

I

have two day jobs. One involves removing unwanted hair; the other involves helping release long held patterns of negative thoughts and beliefs. Working spiritually and holistically on a soul level in both jobs, I am always surprised at the amount of times I hear ‘everything happens for a reason.’ Does it? Does it really? There’s a belief that something negative has to happen for you to grow and make you grow stronger. Tell that to the mother who has lost a child, the person watching the life drain from a loved one, the rape victim, the orphan, the people who struggle with war and famine. Any kind of trauma causes you to suffer loss; emotional, physiological or psychological. You ask: ‘why is this happening to me?’ and as you try to make sense of your circumstances some smart Alec in their own kind way tells you the tragedy was meant to be and you’ll become a better person. Once a person says this it means as far as they’re concerned, they’ve paid you lip service and can move on. These words deny you permission to acknowledge the cause and its effect. What you’re feeling is a form

of grief and grief is brutally painful. There’s a misconception that you only grieve when someone dies – not true! We all grieve when relationships fall apart, when dreams die, when opportunities are lost and when illness absolutely wrecks you. There’s a thought that devastation can lead to growth but it often doesn’t. When grief is not recognised you can become absent, hardened, insular.

Some things in life cannot be fixed, they can only be carried. In my soul therapy sessions I often quote author Megan Devine: ‘Some things in life cannot be fixed, they can only be carried.’ You feel grief because you know and remember the love. Give yourself permission to feel whatever you feel in each moment and hour. Each new day brings new energy so embrace it, happy or sad. I ask ‘advice-givers’ if it’s necessary to say ‘everything happens for a reason’. Does that statement make you feel better? Are you just saying it because you don’t know what

else to say? Does the silence make you uncomfortable? Do you want to avoid eye contact for fear it stirs up your own long forgotten emotions? I believe a few minutes of contemplation of the circumstances will have you respond in a truly beneficial way to the person. Don’t say you know what they must be feeling – you don’t, we’re all individuals. Don’t tell them what you would do. Don’t tell them to act responsibly. They can’t take responsibility for violence, illness or for the loss of a loved one, they didn’t ask for that to happen. Give them the choice to grieve. By offering solutions you deny their right to grieve, to be human and steal some of their freedom. Listen, let them release, offer equanimity, space, a safe silence. Try to come from a place of neutrality and compassion. This will help you to be present, aware and open. You’ll be offering a healing that is priceless yet costs nothing. Don’t feel that you are doing nothing, saying nothing, for in the nothingness you are actually doing everything. 07795 361 288 priticoles.co.uk NICHE | 21

What the experts say about your changing face shape

T

he doctors at MediSkin Care, who specialise in non-surgical cosmetic treatments in Markfield, are often asked when the best time might be to undergo such procedures. As it happens, they say winter is actually an ideal time. Winter is perfect for many skin procedures as it’s a time when we tend to hibernate indoors a lot more than usual, and exposure to the sun post-treatment is a big no-no! The skin rejuvenation process works its very best when you’re completely hidden from the sun. It also makes sense to undergo treatment for ageing skin at this time after summer sun-damage.

The husband and wife team, Dr Sumit Virmani and Dr Gunjan Bedi, deal with skin, hair and body treatments and as both also work as GPs, they’re sympathetic that cosmetic concerns can sometimes deeply affect daily life and confidence but are often not treated on the NHS.

What to do about missing teeth Around 27 million people in the UK have one or more missing teeth, according to Implantium Network. We’re aware that tooth removal can be traumatic and affect daily life. But there are some very good solutions. Dentures sit on the surface of the gum, are relatively cheap and can restore many teeth simultaneously. However, without roots, they may not feel as secure, can be bulky and limit taste perception as top dentures can cover the roof of the mouth where there are thousands of taste buds. Metal dentures are stronger and thinner compared to plastic. Bridges do not cover the roof of the mouth or encroach upon tongue space, can be cleaned like normal teeth, restore gaps of all sizes, and are retained by a small wing glued to teeth or by full crowns giving a more secure grip.

Body contouring Cellulite and excessive fat is a concern for many men and women we’ve seen here at MediSkin Care. For people who have successfully made the sometimes difficult journey to lose weight, excess skin that’s left can be an upsetting reminder of the body they fought to change. Cellulite and body shape can also affect confidence but for many, the thought of undergoing surgery is not worth the risks. This is where Body FX comes in. The new, long lasting, noninvasive solution reduces the appearance of cellulite, flanks and excessive fat and skin. Body FX is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction and works to reshape the body, contouring it in a way the patient desires.

Do nothing when tooth removal won’t cause functional problems. In this case we often advise leaving the gap as long as the patient is aware that teeth next to or opposing the gap can move, affecting the way the mouth functions. Dr Alif Moosajee

Using a combination of radiofrequency energy, deep tissue heating and suction coupled with negative pressure, the underlying stubborn pockets of fat are targeted causing the tissues to heat and contract tightening the skin in the area. The vacuum and controlled energy pulses then provide body shaping results. Whilst the procedure may sound intense, it’s very safe and comfortable as body heat is monitored and controlled. Usually, weekly sessions are needed over a period of eight weeks for best results. Improvements will appear gradually over this time, the skin’s surface feeling smoother and softer immediately and temporary slight warmth of the skin or redness are most commonly experienced. Implants are restorations that most mimic a natural tooth. An implant is a false tooth root inserted into the jaw bone to provide a strong platform. They function as long-lasting replacement teeth but require some surgery and can be costly.

Oakdale Bridging the gap between patient and dentist

ou may remember infamous dentists from Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2015) and Finding Nemo (2003). They’re enough to put you off dentists forever aren’t they? But thankfully, Oakdale Dental in Fosse Road, Leicester has flipped the idea of dentistry on its head. Full of enthusiastic, knowledgeable team members, the professionals have developed a much-loved reputation within the community, beingrespected for their true passion for dentistry and eagerness to get patients loving their smile! Established in 1937, Oakdale Dental is run on generations of experience and expertise, which is why over 400 patients are referred to the surgery annually. What’s new at our favourite spa After a stressful month at work, it was time for another girl’s trip – we have them often – and it’s never hard to come to a unanimous decision

W

e are all always drawn to a certain place due to its luxurious reputation and continually updated themes and offers. Off we went on a half an hour drive to Ragdale Hall. With such welcoming staff greeting us as we arrive each time we are used to instantly sinking into the immersing peaceful atmosphere. After slipping into our robes in the exclusivefeeling, sophisticated changing area, we were free to wander in and out of the relaxation areas until our treatments. If you haven’t visited Ragdale before, you will be amazed by the sheer extravagance of the place, its Thermal Spa and tranquil-almosttropical setup. The treatment rooms are elegant and well-designed with some being bright and fresh and some dimly lit and warmly coloured – but all offering ultimate comfort. What’s great about the spa is there is always something new to indulge in. For us, it was the Rooftop Infinity Pool and Lounge, which is the

latest exciting development. It can be found glistening in the open air allowing guests to enjoy the view of the valley from the infinity edge. Heated to 35°C, the water cocoons you while you are pummelled by the massage jets. There is also a 25 metre Main Pool providing a stunning environment for a swimming workout, along with its cascade, water jets and elevated whirlpool spa for relaxation. And, with lots of loungers around, it’s the perfect place for a snooze or quiet read. Each time we’ve frequented Ragdale, we’re pleased not to encounter too many people on our way around the spa. They never overbook, which ensures you are left to relax in peace and catch up with whoever you came with. Our experience here is always dreamlike, and with such picturesque gardens too, it’s hard not to get lost in your own fairy tale world. 01664 433 000 ragdalehall.co.uk

The FOOD COURT The best eating establishments in Leicestershire NATTERJACKS BAR & KITCHEN 0116 255 3380 natterjacksbar.co.uk 52A BRAUNSTONE GATE, LEICESTER LE3 5LG Great news for foodies and movie fans: Natterjacks on Brauny Gate combines the two. The super quirky restaurant and bar wows anyone on arrival. To the left, movie posters plaster the far wall and to the right, a collage of movie scenes features on the other with Dr Who TARDIS doors leading to the toilets! Super quirky and definitely unique, the décor is certainly a talking point especially for excitable film fanatics but silence will fall once your food arrives – you’ll be too busy enjoying the fantastic flavours. With a menu full of film-related dishes, our most favourite-name being the tasty Big Kahuna Burger as featured in

Pulp Fiction (1994), we went for the Blues Brothers veggie burger with halloumi and the steak with halloumi on top Easy Rider burger, each with a sweet brioche bun and the most perfect fluffiest chunky chips you’ll ever find. See if you can spot your burger on the wall! Ordering sides of crispy battered onion rings and cheesy nachos, we realised phenomenal portion sizes absolutely offer value for money. And we love that you can get flavoursome quesadillas for a fiver! The chilled out atmosphere also makes it perfect for a night out with fanciful cocktails and a mixture of great music tracks.

THE FISH AND THE CHIP

0116 3408 001 thefishandthechip.com 19-21 ST NICHOLAS PLACE, LEICESTER LE1 4LD Moroccan themed restaurant Maiyango on Jubilee Square recently transformed into the Great British style eatery The Fish & the Chip. It was the talk of the town having, boldly and temporarily, had the Union Jack painted across its front. For those who will miss Maiyango’s top quality food, fear not, as the chef is here to stay cooking up an array of classics and exciting new dishes. Our top picks from this brilliantly British-themed foodie feast include the ‘sausage and chips’. Not as simple as it sounds, the charred Lincolnshire sausage is served with chip-shop chunky chips or skinny fries and red wine gravy! We also love the ‘lobster

and skinny fries’. Chef serves up a half lobster chargrilled with garlic and coriander butter, skinny fries and marie rose sauce. There are loads of sea-sides to satisfy too, from a delicious fish corn dog; battered fish saveloy with tomato and garlic relish, to charred halloumi skewers with rocket pesto. The menu is very vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free friendly and has a great dessert and kids section too. OAPs (or silver foxes), and students get 10% off making this place a great all-rounder for any occasion. And with Maiyango’s truly unique signature cocktails on top, it’s also perfect for a night out.

WAGAMAMAS 0116 253 0046 wagamama.com 6 HIGHCROSS LANE, LE1 4SD What do you even eat? Don’t you miss meat? Is what vegans and vegetarians often hear before having to explain their full and extensive choices to the questioner. Well, Wagamama’s new vegan and vegetarian menu does the talking for them proving that there are easily heaps of tasty options available for non-meat eaters and animal-product evaders. Split into two sections, there are three starters and three mains catering to vegetarians, and four vegan starters and six vegan mains as well as some delicious ‘extras’ and desserts to choose from. Niche can highly recommend the bang bang cauliflower starter.

Gone in seconds the moreish crispy vegetable took on a whole new appeal being coated in firecracker sauce, ginger and coriander with red and spring onions. Our favourite main was the yasai katsu curry. It’s always been a popular dish but adapted into the vegetarian menu it features sweet potato, aubergine, and butternut squash coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs shaped into super tasty discs that go beautifully with the mild creamy aromatic curry sauce. So, if you’re a vegetarian or vegan and someone asks what you’re ‘allowed’ to eat, tell them to take you to wagamama’s and show them this menu.

MIDDLETONS 0116 319 5185 middletons-shg.co.uk 2 ST MARTINS, LEICESTER LE1 5DB Found in one of Leicester’s architectural treasures, the restaurant served up some satisfying steak, which was part of a fixed-price-menu offering absolutely incredible value. Three exquisite courses are all yours for just £9.95 (two courses for £8.95) Mon-Sat 12-6pm; perfect timing for a work lunch or shopping break. The beautifully decorated former banking hall boasts a stunning 50ft-high dome and various original features and a grand yet welcoming feel. The former Bank building dates back to 1900 and had stood empty for 16 years until it was reopened in October 2016 and is now home to over 200 seats for diners. The interior

décor was astonishingly beautiful. The menu, which is perfect for the steak lover with fillets, rib-eyes and even Chateaubriand accompanied by a wide choice of sides and sauces, is a meat lover’s delight. The lobster, which comes with garlic butter or Thermidor sauce, was perfectly salty and fresh with its filling chunky flakes melting in the mouth. The atmosphere was perfect as we sat in our private half-moon booths and waiting staff were excellent knowing the menu inside out. It was wonderful to see such a stunning building come to life in the way that it has, it makes for a very special dining experience.

WHEATSHEAF INN 01509 890 320 wheatsheafinn.net BRAND HILL, WOODHOUSE EAVES, LE12 8SS When we visit a public house for food there are a handful of things we hope to see – a true English country pub full of charm and character, a cosy, relaxed ambience and good home cooked grub. Jenny Cross, Director of Cross Productions, happily discovered the Wheatsheaf Inn in Woodhouse Eaves ticked all these boxes and more. A warm welcome and a crackling log fire greeted us and with a traditional décor and mouth-watering menu to match we knew we were in for a treat. A self-confessed pâté fan, I went for this to start which was exactly as I had hoped it would be; chicken liver, brandy & herb served

with red onion chutney and granary toast. Then it was the Stilton Burger from the grill. The succulent steak burger was topped with a generous portion of stilton and encased in a toasted bun with plenty of chips and coleslaw on the side. For dessert, despite being satisfyingly full, was honeycomb ice cream - well, it would be rude not to, wouldn’t it? It was the perfect end to a delightful and truly comforting meal. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere was just what we wanted. It’s wonderful to see a public Inn still so full of traditional touches, real ale and exceptionally well-cooked home comfort foods. A hidden gem. NICHE | 29

The Fish & There is a foodie buzz in the city and it’s all to do with Fish and a certain Chip…

T

he Union Jack caused quite a scene a few months ago when it appeared overnight on the front of the city’s popular Maiyango restaurant in Jubliee Square. Except it doesn’t go by this name anymore as it was recently transformed into The Fish & The Chip. It was the talk of the town with some members of the public whispering it to be a political move while others believed it to be a celebration of British culture. Speculation was high among the locals trying to decipher the owner’s reasoning behind such a bold move. Aatin Anadkat, founder of the new chip-shop-style restaurant said: “It got people talking. And that is the sole reason behind it. It was quite amusing for us to hear all the theories behind the new look. We knew the giant flag would get a lot

of attention and intrigue so it was great marketing for us.” Maiyango’s popular menu will be dearly missed but The Fish & The Chip has made for a welcome, comforting shoulder to cry on. But be warned a follow up to Maiyango this is not, This is a completely new idea with its own unique style! The ‘chip shop’ restaurant is already our favourite gaff when we want to eat real food at fair prices in a fun location. Inside, you can expect a perfectly Instagrammable setting; a brightly coloured retro theme with classic wooden chairs and tables. And, no longer is it necessary to take a three hour trip to Skegness or your other favourite seaside town to get the best fish and chips around.

“When we were putting the menu together we wanted to capture the feeling of nostalgia and take classic dishes but then evolve them to ensure they were appealing to a modern consumer. Allergens and dietaries are fully catered for and there is a focus on freshness and quality. Absolutely everything is made in house, just as it should be!” The focus is on our nation’s favourite comfort food, playful cocktails, craft beer and plenty of exceptionally cooked and presented grub. Printed on the traditional newspaper-sheet menu, you’ll find the definitively British dish of fish and chips, and this is our personal lunch time fave as it comes complete with a pot of tea and mushy peas – perfection! Then there’s the classic sausage and chips or pie for those who aren’t

The Chip. . . #comfortfood

fans of fish and even lobster on the menu for those in the mood for something a little more refined – this one is said to be a favourite of many (have a read of our review in ‘The Food Court’ section). Aatin has always been known for catering to dietary needs of all kinds with his extensive menu featured at Maiyango and he continues this ethos with the new menu. The vegan fish and chips, vegan burger and halloumi fries for the vegetarian, the gluten free fish batter as standard and many more options satisfy those with dietary needs. Sides are refreshingly more than your average bowl of chips, with whitebait and cheesy fritters making an appearance! Kids are catered for with a marvellous menu

of scrummy delights they will actually want to eat every last bite! Especially when they see what’s for pudding. They can choose from the wonderfully unique ‘decorate your own biscuit’ option as well as homemade ice creams ice cream or bubble waffles. There’s plenty of the real good stuff for pudding for the grown-up kids too with homemade apple pies and vegan brownies amongst the indulgent perfectly naughty mix to round up a seriously satisfying meal time. The Fish & The Chip is bursting with character and full of flavour as you should expect from something based around the culture of the uniquely loveable, Great British seaside. 0116 3408 001 thefishandthechip.com

The Bar & The Tender Leicester folk won’t be missing out on the famous Maiyango cocktails as The Fish & The Chip provide a whole menu full of fascinating beverages – making this also a perfect destination to begin your night out. Here’s a few to whet your appetite. Six security measures you need to take this

Christmas VIOLENCE OR THREATENING BEHAVIOUR is used in 10% of burglaries across the UK and 80% of victims involved are left emotionally affected; the festive cheer of the Christmas period is no exception to these statistics - avoid being a victim this Christmas

A

ccording to the Home Office, reports of home burglaries peak to 11 per cent above average in late December and January as thieves enter empty homes filled with treasures. Homes are targeted more commonly over this season due to the fact that often lights are left switched on, curtains are open and it’s easy to see what’s on display presenting an open opportunity for thieves. However, the Home Office reports that with the rise in security and prevention plans, a burglary at Christmas is three times less likely than it was back in 1995. It is suggested that this is because of the increased amount of home security being installed.

experts Abel about how best to avoid becoming a victim this year. Employing more than 250 members of staff across the UK Abel are the UK’s leading provider of Home Security with solutions to meet individual budgets and needs.

With Christmas on the horizon we spoke with national home security

“We’ve put together some tips to stay secure.”

38 | NICHE

Director Joel Mulloy told us: “As much as we might all enjoy the giving and receiving of gifts at Christmas time, for the average burglar it’s even more enjoyable as homes provide rich and easy pickings. We know, thinking about Christmas as a crime scene is not entirely what you want to do but with all the gadgets, new bikes and gifts around, thieves target homes at this time of year particularly.

LEAVE A LIGHT ON

Leaving less ‘obvious’ lights on such as the bathroom and kitchen lights and drawing curtains and blinds as opposed to just leaving the hall or landing light on might go a long way in deterring those looking to see who is out or who is home. There are many affordable gadgets that can be installed by the home owner where lights can be on timers. The PHILIPS hue is a great example. With this you can add more rooms to the set up in your own time making it a lot more affordable and it’s so simple to add to any home you don’t need to call in an expert.

GOOD NEIGHBOURS Asking your close neighbours to keep an eye out if you know you are out for the evening is always helpful, you can always offer to do the same. This community aspect is also lovely at this time of year and you will be pleasantly surprised at how much people will want to help. Ask for any online shopping deliveries to be delivered to a neighbour if you are out too, if they are ‘round the back’ delivered they may not still be there when you get back!

The Statistics The following burglary-related facts and figures might give you a different perspective of Christmas crime, and you can put yourself in the shoes of victims – or the burglars themselves! Hence, it may shed light on the best ways to predict burglars and protect you from the criminals.

Over 1 million burglaries and attempted burglaries each year A burglary happens every 40 seconds in the UK Most burglaries are committed by opportunistic criminals Burglary occurs in 6% of cases when properties have less than basic security

SHUT IT

Double check that your windows and doors are locked, sometimes in the busy festive period or with guests in the house we can all neglect things that we are normally vigilant about and locking windows and doors is one of those things. Statistics show that 64 per cent of householders left doors unlocked whilst away from home and a further 37 per cent left them unlocked whilst inside the home, yet 22 per cent of burglaries are carried out with the thief aware that the home was occupied.

RECYCLE BUT NOT IN PLAIN SIGHT Obviously, you should recycle. But, be careful about putting those iPad, T.V and games console boxes outside in plain sight – it’s just advertising what’s inside for thieves. Try and put the recycling out in the morning as opposed to the night before.

GET THE GEAR

There are no greater deterrents than the latest in security systems. Abel is a national company with over 50 years in business. With the latest technology in intruder and CCTV systems you can ensure your home is covered, from as little as £595 fully installed. The great thing about technology is that it’s forever changing making our busy lives even easier. You can now even have links and alerts to your mobile phone from your system when it is activated as well as perfectly positioned CCTV cameras to deter and capture images of any intruders. Remote Video Receiving Centre’s technicians can also ‘tap into’ your CCTV footage at any time and ward off intruders through an intercom system as well as alerting the police. If you would like to talk to an expert, get some advice or even a quote please contact us.

73% of burglars use doors, which are open in 3% of cases A Victim Support Survey found that 1 in 4 victims have had their house broken into more than once Urban residents are two times more likely to be burglars’ targets than rural dwellers 10% occur in the morning 20% in the afternoon 32% in the evening 23% during the night 30% occur in the weekend 88% are committed by men 6% are committed by females

CONSIDER OUTDOORS TOO

6% are committed by a male and a female together

Sheds are a prime target as they are home to many brand-new bikes and perhaps even dad’s new tools. Especially easy to get into, sheds can even be targeted whilst you are home, especially if you have a large garden.

The most common age group for burglars is 16-24, with 16% being of school age

Those in Property have their say

Beautiful furniture ‘Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful’, William Morris said, and I have to say I absolutely agree with him. How many items of furniture in your home do you truly love? How many pieces reflect your true tastes, are built to last and perhaps even become family heirlooms? Consider whether your home deserves some key talking point pieces from which you can inject your unique style into your décor, I suspect it does. To me, with our company’s nearly 200 years of cabinetmaking experience, I appreciate well-crafted pieces in the home. I know that what we build is stunning and built to last and that whilst a piece from us may cost more than your average flat pack purchase, ours is unique, a talking point and a reflection of true eye for detail. Added to the fact that it will be better for your bank balance in the long run, you will rarely find a hand-crafted piece at a boot sale or internet auction sites for example. You will never regret buying quality. A craftsman made item sets the tone for the room, a statement piece in the hall reminds your visitors that your home is tasteful. Some pieces may be purely functional, but with our guidance they can be an art form, truly making your house your home. Richard Lowe 01509 212 554 charleslowe.co.uk 44 | NICHE

Cosy up under foot

#LOOKFORTHELOGO

The nights are drawing in and as a result we are seeing more and more clients in the showroom with cosy interior wishes in mind. The seasons really do affect how our clients shop for new flooring and autumn and winter certainly lends itself to more ‘warming’ plush carpets and rugs underfoot.

This year Propertymark was launched uniting ARLA, NAEA, NAVA, ICBA, APIP and NFoPP Awarding Body into a single, recognisable brand to achieve greater consumer awareness. They’re currently running an ad campaign #LOOKFORTHELOGO to encourage consumers renting or letting out property to look for the Propertymark Protected logo as you would look for the ABTA or ATOL logos when booking a holiday, to ensure you are using an agent you can trust.

We also often see a shift in colours with the colder months seeing customers opting for warmer, darker tones rather than the lighter colours which are sought after in the summer months. Of course, it just isn’t practical for all sorts of reasons to change your flooring every season, so, how can you incorporate seasonal trends into your interiors without a complete overhaul? Well, in a word – rugs! Providing great flexibility, opting to change your rug choices a couple of times a year is a fantastic way to inject seasonal colours and textures into your décor without breaking the bank. If a client has dark flooring a light but plush textured rug can be a great addition in the colder months, whilst those with lighter flooring could opt for some deep coloured pieces to inject a bit of cosiness through a richer colour palette. An addition of a great rug this season is the perfect way to inject a bit of cosiness in the home. Mark Lucas

How to turn your bathroom into a spa-like sanctuary with just a few simple steps this winter Hansgrohe Axor Starck Classic Mono Basin Mixer £250.74

Who doesn’t love a long luxurious bubble bath? Or a session in a sauna or steam room? Creating a spalike retreat is the ultimate in home relaxation and it’s an increasingly popular trend in bathroom design. I’ve personally always hankered after an open fireplace in my bathroom, the fantasy is to slide into a large jacuzzi bath, in front of a roaring log fire, box of chocolates and a glass of something fizzy in hand and to lie back and watch a favourite film on a waterproof tv screen. Bliss! There are so many ways of indulging in the home spa trend these days that it doesn’t have to cost the earth to enjoy a slice of relaxation heaven in the privacy of your own bathroom. Invest in fluffy towel and robes, light some beautifully fragranced candles, bathe with spa-scented toiletries. These are the basics. To go further, use dimmable lighting in your bathroom to set the mood and try to have more than just the overhead ceiling fitting. Clever lighting can make a budget design appear truly luxurious. Save money on the furniture (sinks, WC, bath) and splurge on some seriously swanky tap fittings to give the full on designer look without the hefty price tag. Have a peek at my picks for making your bathroom feel more like a spa retreat. …and relax!

ACTION

Local construction company Premier Development Contractors Ltd. are changing the city’s landscape and invite you to be part of the action

P

remier Developments Contractors Ltd. are changing the face of our architecture throughout Leicestershire and beyond. The professionally managed construction contractors provide services to both commercial and private sectors and are the company to secure you a financially sound investment on the purchase and conversion of one of the many disused character-filled commercial buildings and sites of Leicestershire and beyond. Their expert knowledge and extensive experience mean that they can source, design, reconstruct and decorate the build in its entirety, with the client informed every step of the way through dedicated project managers and separate client liaison operatives. A Premier client receives continuous updates and an open communication channel with the assistance of the unique intranet system, which enables a client to be informed throughout with the option to view project images, request meetings and see live project schedules. It’s a vibrant time for the city and with a plentiful supply of buildings that are more than ideal for flat or office conversions, now is an excellent time for clients looking to expand on their property portfolio or invest their finances soundly. The city of course boasts not one but two universities and with students and mature students attracted to the city more than ever before it’s not

surprising that there is a demand for accommodation. The efficiency of the Premier team is second to none with the company hiring experts within each field, ensuring that quality is at the top of priority for each and every project. With the same dedicated manager for each project, deadlines and expectations are met every time. This high quality is assured despite their highly competitive rates and through contacts within the industry they are able to drive down costs but remain at an exceptional level of quality. Flexibility of the works is a further advantage to designers and architects being part of the permanent team with an adaptability possible throughout the process which many companies don’t have. This is so important when large projects are undertaken and changes are needed when the project is in process. Providing the same level of commitment and service to a project, whatever its size, Premier have worked with a growing number of local businesses, big and small, including one of our most famous locations; The King Power Stadium. Leicester City’s CEO said of Premier: “Thank you very much for all your work ensuring our Players’ Lounge and Coaches Room was ready for an upcoming game. They were all very happy and I very much appreciated that the work was completed in time and to a high standard.”

Operating from their own 20,000sq. ft. industrial unit, the company service jobs with their own vehicles so are able to control the delivery of materials to site fulfilling promises on deadlines and much more. In addition, they have a 40,000-sq. ft. office space and a bespoke apartment showroom for clients to see for themselves specifications for their own developments. Free project appraisals are part and parcel of the Premier package and at such an exciting time to be part of the changing face of the city, Premier invite you to invest in the city and be part of its buzz. 0116 214 5099 premierdc.co.uk NICHE | 49

Those in Property have their say

Premier Service At Premier Development Contractors Ltd we undertake a wide range of both commercial and residential projects. Individual teams for each project are not only dedicated to ensuring the build is completed to spec and on time, but also continue to pay close attention to a project long after the last tool is packed away. To give you an idea of what to expect for your residential or smaller scale projects, it’s my sole job to visit a property after a project is completed to ensure that everything is to the exact specification that a client wants. It’s my job to iron out any issues they may have, or any snags in the works. Of course, there is rarely anything to report in this regard but it’s a vital part of what we do. Clients often remark at the service we provide, for them it’s crucial to know that we care from the very start, right through to when they have ‘lived with’ the product for some time. So many firms say they will commit to service on a project but all too often fall to the side after work is completed. We believe so strongly in our commitment to client satisfaction that we have dedicated roles within the firm with people like myself who are primarily interested in the ‘little’ details after completion. Bold for a cosy, luxurious home

Your garden traditional v modern

With the weather getting colder we are all craving a cosier home, and with décor trends leaning towards a darker colour palette, we are seeing changes to kitchen and bathroom trends for this winter and beyond.

Isn’t daytime TV fascinating? Episodes of Jeremy Kyle, Judge Rinder… anybody else end up wishing you could watch day in, day out too – or is that just me?

The white washed wall trend that seems to have been around for years influenced the way in which people chose the design of the two most important rooms in the house with people looking to inject colour through accessories rather than walls. With the shift to darker hues on the walls clients are looking for cleaner, simpler lines in their kitchen cabinets and bath suites, and this minimalist, monochrome cabinet trend is huge for 2018. For accessories, we are seeing a real trend for different finishes on taps with brushed metals, rose gold and copper finishes and even copper doors, bringing a touch of industrial chic to the finished look. Of course, most of us are naturally slightly scared of going down the dark route particularly if the space is small but it really is such a classic look and works all year round in all sized rooms – I am encouraging anyone who will listen to be bold and go darker for a cosier, stylish space.

Something that caught my eye was BBC One’s Garden Rescue, that pits Charlie Dimmock (Ground Force) against the Rich Brothers (who want to make gardening ‘cool’ again) in creating a garden around a specified budget. What was clear was the differing styles between the brothers and Charlie – the boys opted for a modern environment with space for entertaining friends; while Charlie designed a space for socialising, spending time as a family, and growing vegetables. The brothers specialise in modern gardens. Contemporary is in at the moment; creating bespoke designs to suit a range of clients and their outdoor spaces, with an adult-only space incorporated in both designs. There are many ways you can achieve privacy. Plant life allows coverage that still makes you feel part of the garden, and creating a living barrier of fern or espalier trees means you’re not excluded from the rest of the garden.

Visit us to discuss ways in which you can get this luxurious feel for your home. Francis James

There is no right answer, and garden design isn’t done in a prescribed way: traditional is classic (and it’s a common misconception that tradition means old-fashioned and boring). Everything is bespoke – designed with the customer in mind. Michael Wheat

2017 HEADLINE SPONSOR

NICHE 2017 Business Awards The third ceremony of the annual Niche Business Awards took place on Friday 8th September this year

T

he Oscar theme ran strong throughout the venue from the paparazzi interviewing guests on the red carpet entrance to movie soundtrack background music and clapperboard table numbers. The Athena venue has suited and exceeded the needs of the Niche Business Awards each year. Originally built in 1936 by Arthur Bulivant as an Odeon cinema that accommodated over 3000 guests, Athena’s Art Deco architecture is awe-inspiring and perfectly fitting with the Oscar theme. Many companies were to thank in the making of the event providing a superior range of entertainment including Midlands Pro DJ, Royal Flush Casino, Scott Choucino Photography, Caricaturist Adam Alexander, and Big Bang Events for providing the photobooth. The Voice contestant Bizzi Dixon from Leicester, who made it through to the finals and owns his own record label, kindly, sang a soul-stirring set once the awards were announced. This year was the most energetic so far with the competition all eager to earn themselves a Niche Business Award. The ceremony’s headline

54 | NICHE

sponsor representatives from Cambridge & Counties Bank, who value corporate social responsibility, charity, and caring for the environment, were extremely proud of all the finalists and winners on the night having been involved in the production of the awards for almost nine months. Finalists were encouraged to ‘break a leg’ before each category announcement was made inviting the winner on stage - and some literally jumped for joy at their success. Proud of all their winners, Cambridge & Counties Bank praised everyone who made it through to the finals and introduced the exceptional Above & Beyond award winner chosen by themselves as headline sponsor. All sponsors and ambassadors put in the time and hard work to make this year’s awards one to remember. They had the difficult task of whittling down over 450 nominations, researching each company, and eventually deciding upon a winner from the many worthy candidates. Next year’s theme has already been chosen and will be revealed next year.

The

10 YEAR evolution Niche’s businesswoman of the year reveals her secrets of success in an industry dominated by men

T

his September Niche Magazine hosted its third annual Niche Business Awards at Athena and seventeen winners were announced. Arguably one of the most prestigious awards of the night each year, the Businesswoman of the Year award went to CEO of Evolve-IT Consulting Ltd Leanne Bonner-Cooke; the businesswoman who won the same accolade at the first ever Niche Business Awards in 2015. Unfortunately though, Leanne couldn’t make it to the ceremony this year so Evolve’s marketing and communications manager Hannah Tomlinson collected the award on her behalf. Leanne said: “I was on holiday in Russia and received a message from the team saying we’d won, so my friend and I poured ourselves a large Russian vodka and toasted the win! I was so humbled to hear the news after seeing the calibre of the finalists in my category; they are all fantastic businesswomen who deserve recognition.” In the past, the Businesswoman of the Year has described the IT industry as ‘male-dominated’ saying it’s possible to feel intimidated in a boardroom where a woman is totally outnumbered by men. “But it’s how you deal with that feeling that determines whether you sink or swim. I knew I was just as good

Business

as them and I wanted to prove that, which was a huge driving force in the success I’ve seen with Evolve. “No matter what job you do and whether you’re a CEO or an assistant, we are all human and we all just want to do a good job and be respected. Times are changing but I still think we have a long way to go before a woman can run a technology business without it being ‘a thing’.” Leanne was witness to the technological evolution in the late 80’s, as technology became more accessible and its increased efficiencies became apparent, she found herself hooked on IT and the power it could have in business. But 2007 was Leanne’s tipping point - she could see the virtues new technology brought to a business, but as she became more involved with IT, it became clear that IT departments were, typically, dictating to the rest of the business. Leanne believes business improvement starts with the people and the processes, with technology simply being an enabler that can make great things achievable. This is the reason she was determined Evolve would offer something many IT firms didn’t – a business consultant who would concentrate on the people, processes and experts who could develop the technology in order to realise the customers’ desired outcomes. It’s been 10 years since the formation of Evolve, so we asked Leanne how technology has evolved the way businesses work since 2007: “Standing still is like going backwards in business, you HAVE to move with the times and technology is a huge part of that – if you’re not doing things quickly and efficiently then a competitor will. I’d have to say that the businesses who are taking advantage of technology or staying ahead of the technology curve are the ones at the forefront of their sector. “We’ve seen so much tech evolution in ten years; from mobile apps, voice recognition and Internet of Things to virtual reality, some brilliant and some faddish, but I’d say that business has improved through better use of technology for sure and that’s what excites me about what we

Raising money is fun for us as a team and that’s important for morale do – there appear to be no limits to technological capability so I can’t wait to see what the next ten years brings!” Evolve has raised money for local charities such as Soft Touch Arts, Leicestershire and Rutland 4x4 Response, LOROS, Air Ambulance and Hope Against Cancer using various forms of fund raising from 10km mud runs to barbeque raffle parties. “Raising money is fun for us as a team and that’s important for morale,” she explained. The company has 15 awards and nominations to its name. We asked Leanne why Evolve has been consistently recognised in this way. “I honestly think it’s down to our customer relationships and unique style and approach. Unlike other consultancies, we work in a totally transparent partnership with our

customers. And, we have a lot of talented people. I take people on who are specialists in their field or have a great attitude and allow them to work with autonomy, which I find empowers them and therefore creates confident and responsible employees.” After revealing the secrets of Evolve’s success, Leanne commented: “Winning Businesswoman of the year is such an accolade and the standard of the Niche winners are always high, this year being no exception. I am honoured to accept the award and would like to acknowledge the whole team at Evolve because without them, winning would not have been possible.” 0116 298 7460 evolve-consultants.co.uk NICHE | 59

What our candidates say about our service After 27 years with one of the UK’s largest retailers, progressing to senior HR level, I found myself being made redundant due to a trial restructure. This left me in the foreign territory of CV writing, registering with agencies and job hunting. I applied for roles with large recruitment agencies and met specialist HR agents from all of the big names but quickly discovered that HR was a loose labour market and that meant looking after me personally was not going to happen. By chance I applied for a role through Eileen Richards and within a few hours I received a call from Josh, arranging to meet soon after and quickly lined up with an interview for a prestigious company. Throughout the whole journey, which has resulted in a successful posting, the team have been an amazing support. Not only providing the necessary details but also offering positive reassurance and being completely personable and professional. Eileen herself made personal calls to me too, ensuring she was also happy that everything was going well and offering support and advice. If either promised to call or act on something then they did. I would therefore, for these reasons, highly recommend anyone to use the Eileen Richards agency as a first port of call if you have a need or desire to look for the next great role. Lynn

My experience with Eileen Richards Recruitment truly changed my life. I had the pleasure of meeting Eileen and the team, all of whom were extremely professional. I was able to secure a role within 4 days of contacting the consultancy and I would highly recommend getting in touch with them if you are looking for a fresh start! Steven

I highly recommend Eileen Richards recruitment for their integrity, commitment and dedication to ensure they went above and beyond expectations to help my employment needs. I received a first-class service from the team through interview preparation and post interview support - working with them was an immense pleasure. Wasim

My journey with Eileen Richards Recruitment was smooth, professional, friendly and supportive from the start. Their thorough process and procedure is unlike any other agency I have ever came across and I really couldn’t have secured my dream career without them! Helen

62 | NICHE

I cannot thank the Eileen Richards team enough for finding me my perfect job. I signed up with several agencies, but theirs was head and shoulders above any other. I would recommended the team to many others for their professionalism and dedication to getting the right job each candidate that they work with. Fiona

After being in my last position for over 12 years, looking for new employment seemed to be a daunting task. The Eileen Richards Recruitment team provided guidance, inspiration and showed great confidence in me which in turn allowed me to believe being re-employed would be a quick success, which it was! I would recommend their professionalism and efficiency with in a heartbeat. Nilesh

Intelligent Financial Advisory Ltd attracts new advisers in unexpected growth The independent group of financial advisers was formed in 2015 by four individuals who had the same goal of running a business where the clients’ interests were at the heart of everything they did, with no restrictions, to ensure true independent and impartial advice. Unlike many other advisers and firms, Intelligent Financial Advisory (i-FA) is free to recommend the very best path for their clients as they hold no preferences or loyalties to any one company.

started the company we had only ever planned for the original founders to be the only advisers due to the shared ethos. However, we were approached by other financial adviser’s whom felt that they could add value, experience and a new dynamic to our business. We also felt that we were now in a position to support them in their step into the i-FA world. We’ve been going for over two years and started with just the four of us but now we have tripled in size.”

This approach is one of the reasons why i-FA has had an unexpected growth spurt in new advisers. The company has now built a very firm standing in the Leicestershire business world. With this, i-FA decided to embark on a welcomed but unplanned expansion. Director Ramsy Dhillon said: “When we

The new advisers, Ajay Badiani, Helen Somaiya (Gadsby) and Baljinder Gill, all joined the company within the last few months. Between them they have over 50 years experience in financial services and providing financial advice having previously working for a number of major high

Ajay Badiani stated: “After speaking to numerous advisory firms, it was the professionalism, independence and support that made me want to join i-FA.” i-FA pride themselves on the friendly and approachable nature of their advisers and staff so has been very selective when selecting new team members. I loved Christmas as a child – the twinkling fairy lights, baubles collected over the years, the window displays in the high street and the magical moment when coming faceto-face with Father Christmas.

the Lord Mayor will push the button to switch on thousands of Christmas lights across the city centre and on the large Christmas tree at the Clock Tower. Shops, cafés and bars will be open late.

The importance of delivering memorable experiences remains strong. Leicester is in a good place to provide. The city has benefitted from the fascinating stories of King Richard III and Leicester City Football Club’s fairy tale success. High profile businesses have moved to Leicester and substantial private investment is clearly evident. New public spaces and pedestrianised streets have transformed the city centre into a connected, safe, family-friendly place.

See our Christmas Guide 2017 for where to go, what to see and do and where to buy the perfect gifts. There is a special ‘Christmas in Leicester’ pull out section which includes a map of the city centre, and travel and parking information.

For the first time, the city will have a Christmas fair in New Market Square filled with dozens of Alpine-style chalets bursting with sensational gifts and crafts and tantalising Leicestershire food and drink. Beautiful snowflake lights and Christmas music will create the perfect ambience to put you in a festive mood. Leicester Market is steeped in hundreds of years of tradition, its Food Hall and undercover market has everything you could ever need for your Christmas table, and it’s fresh, local and good value. You can literally get your skates on this year – a 35m x 15m real ice rink will be in Jubilee Square

next to the Big Wheel for a month from 9th December. There will be themed events such as Santa Jumper skating sessions, disco nights, and opportunities for parents and toddlers to venture out on the ice with the help of penguin skating aids. Be sure to take advantage of group discounts. There are also closed sessions for school groups. The weather won’t spoil your fun either as the rink has a clear roof. And, the Town hall will be ablaze with illuminations for the Narnia themed tableau and nativity scene. On Thursday 23rd November, the city will welcome thousands of people for the Christmas Light Switch On. A fun-packed entertainment programme is planned for the stage on Humberstone Gate which includes appearances from cast members of the musical Scrooge, Curve’s Christmas production, and De Montfort Hall’s Beauty and the Beast show. Highcross will be staging spectacular shows from 5pm in a ‘chilly’ St Peter’s Square. At 6.30pm

Christmas in Leicester

The lady changing the Glynis Wright went from trainee solicitor to award winning family lawyer in just six

T

he East Midlands Women’s Awards took place in October, with Glynis Wright, the founder of Glynis Wright & Co Solicitors, being honoured twice. The Female Entrepreneur of the Year award was much appreciated, but it was the Inspirational Female Leader accolade that really blew her away. This latter is an additional award awarded by the judges based on a combination of real leadership, business acumen and support for other women in business. Event Organiser Sandra Pollock said: “Glynis Wright was awarded this prestigious accolade because her nomination exemplified all the required characteristics in the opinion of the judges and in my view, as Founder of the East Midlands Women’s Awards.” This senior family lawyer has become known as an inspiration to many, yet it has only been six years since the formation of Glynis Wright & Co Solicitors. A new chapter in Glynis’ life began at the age of 40. Although she was happy in her career as a public servant, Glynis felt the need for change and made the decision to retrain as a lawyer, becoming a trainee solicitor at 42. She said: “It was an opportunity for me to do something really positive for those around me. I wanted a new challenge and a new career. Being 40 didn’t seem an obstacle and I am a great believer that individuals can reinvent themselves in new careers throughout their lives if they have enough drive and determination.” For those who might think age is a barrier to life change, Glynis believes that it is becoming increasingly common for people to have two or even three careers in their lifetime –she says: ‘It’s all about attitude.’

66 | NICHE

Glynis had entered law with the intention of becoming a criminal lawyer initially, but said: “I knew from the moment I met my first family law client that it was right for me to be a family lawyer. I engaged with the fact that this was a traumatic experience for the client, very akin to losing a close relative. It is, after all, the death of a life that this person expected to have forever, and I could make a difference by being an effective lawyer for them. I strive to help people through this difficult time and encourage all of my lawyers to avoid making matters worse by increasing the argument or acrimony. Having experienced my own parents’ divorce well before I became a family lawyer and remembering how distressing that was for the whole family, I recognised that I had an opportunity to make a positive contribution to the delivery of family law because of this insight.”

Glynis Wright & Co was formed in 2011 after the Sunderland-born lawyer decided to embark on yet another challenge; setting up her own business. Excited by the prospect of carving out her own niche family law practice, the business started with Glynis and just one part time secretary and now employs 20 staff including 8 lawyers. Many of Glynis’ senior lawyers are prize winning in their own right and each are committed to resolving disputes out of court which is a central ethos of the business.

In its third year of business, the firm won the Leicestershire Law Society’s Law Firm of the Year award. “It had always been the much larger law firms who won the award, so it was absolutely incredible when we did. We were taking a very fresh approach to family law, we had already expanded rapidly and we were becoming known for our community work such as the Pulled Both Ways project which aims to raise awareness of the impact of divorce on children, which we funded in partnership with local charity Soft Touch Arts. The project worked with school children who made their own films about the effects of divorce on children. The videos are hard hitting. The project has had an impact in getting parents to think very hard about the way they engage in disputes over children and not to assume court is the best option. The videos can be viewed on the Glynis Wright and Soft Touch Arts websites for all those interested to see them. A second Pulled Both Ways project is just getting underway which is linked to the national campaign of Voices in the Middle who are supporting the project. The second project will have reach way beyond the Midlands.” Glynis believes that all business leaders should give something back to their communities. “The reason I became a public servant in my first career was because I am committed to my community and being useful within it. Now that my business is fortunate enough to be supported by people from my community who use our services, I want to give something back.” She recently became a trustee of the Learning without Limits Educational Academy which includes Babington College and Lancaster Boys and is currently Deputy Vice President of the Leicestershire Law Society.

face of divorce years during her 40s, proving age is just a number Glynis is also passionate about helping other women in business and partnered with Niche Magazine’s Director Jenny Cross to create the Inspirational Women in Business seminars which aim to support and mentor women from high flying business leaders to those wanting to get back into work after having children who are considering setting up their own businesses. The seminars have been hugely popular with the 10th seminar being run on 26 January 2018. Glynis is well known throughout the business and charitable communities and has established the brand of her company in record breaking time. To many of us who have seen Glynis’ billboard marketing, she has become well known as ‘The lady on the billboards.’ She said: “I get approached by strangers all the time asking if I am the lady on the billboard. It’s great because people facing divorce and relationship breakup can see the real person behind the company and the face of the lawyers that they will be working with. I think that is why the public have responded so well to the marketing campaign.” Glynis’ latest awards are a testament to the dedication she has for family law, but more than anything they are a testament to the team of staff that she employs who share her vision of changing the face of family law in favour of a less damaging and more collaborative process. Glynis said “I am so proud of the lawyers who work for me. They are outstanding in their professions and utterly dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in family law. It is an 0116 238 5680 glyniswright.co.uk

absolute joy to watch them develop and thrive within my company.” Glynis told us that she has plans to grow the business further, so it will be fascinating to see what the lady who is changing the face of divorce does next!

Trumpet blowing for the modest Business It’s human nature for most of us to play down our own achievements. We’re reluctant to tell others we’re good at something through fear of being accused of an over-inflated ego. Or even worse, people might think we’re actually VAIN… perish the thought! As businesspeople we have to find time to assert our professional authority in our domain. If your business is the best of its kind – shout about it! Winning more contracts than your competitors? Tell us about it! Write and talk about how great you are and invariably, the fears we associate with this are unfounded. Respectful businesses and customers will see your positive stories not as ego massage, but as pride. At Evolve, we work incredibly hard and produce some fantastic software products and services – we’ve even been honoured with 15 nominations and awards in the last two years to recognise our achievements. So we’ve decided its trumpet blowing time. Too long have we hidden our light under a bushel, it’s time to spread the light and set the place on fire! We are brilliant at what we do: our unique approach, our customer care, our desire to innovate are all reasons why we are proud to call ourselves a leading bespoke software and development business. Be proud of what you do and how well you do it. It feels great! Hannah Tomlinson 0116 298 7460 evolve-consultants.co.uk 68 | NICHE

An end to SA302s

Divorce on the rise!

Earlier in the year, I wrote about Digital tax accounts and returns being introduced over the next few years. I mentioned SA302s, the annual assessment form issued by HMRC to those who file online tax returns to summarise your income and tax calculations. The SA302 has for the last 20 years been the default standard evidence of income and was required by many of us to assist with proof of income, particularly for mortgage applications. Requesting SA302s from HMRC would often cause delays to the application process and their availability on your online Personal Tax Account (PTA) under the Digital tax regime would make them more accessible.

As many of you will be aware, the Office for National Statistics released new figures on 18th October 2017 in relation to divorces in England and Wales.

However, from 4 September this year, the HMRC has stopped issuing SA302 summaries; they have reached an agreement with UK Finance (Mortgage Lenders) for online print outs of the Tax Overview and Calculation, available for years via the Government Gateway, to be accepted as evidence of income earned. So, although the SA302 will now not be available on your individual PTA, you will be able to print off your tax overviews. Whether or not lenders will in practice accept these overviews as sufficient evidence of income, as HMRC state they should, we will wait to see! For help with your Personal Tax Return and to discuss any queries relating Making Tax Digital, please speak to Peter Morris at Torr Waterfield. Peter Morris 0116 242 3400 torrwaterfield.co.uk

Summarised below are some of the key updates: 2016 showed the first noticeable increase in divorces of oppositesex couples since 2009. A whopping 42% of marriages end in divorce and around 50% of these divorces occur within the first 10 years of marriage. It comes as no surprise that the mean age for divorce of opposite-sex couples for men was 46.1 years and 43.7 years for women (did someone say midlife crisis?!) Unsurprisingly, unreasonable behaviour remained the most common ground for oppositesex couples divorcing. This has received much press lately, with Parliament still being lobbied for a ‘no-fault divorce’ due to the tension and hostility it can cause in having to raise allegations against your spouse in order to obtain a divorce in this country. In light of the above, if you are contemplating a divorce or separation now is the time to book in to see one of our specialist family lawyers prior to the New Year rush! Glynis Wright

“We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle” Sir Winston Churchill

Buying or selling, management buyouts are a strictly tax efficient partnering! How to go about selling your business as retirement approaches can be a worry for small business owners. It’s fine if a large competitor with plenty of money is prepared to buy you out, but, in a declining economy where few people have much ready cash, selling can be a challenge. If you are in this situation, a management buyout might be the answer. To buy out your business the purchaser does not need much capital. First, your buyer forms a holding company to acquire your company, and rather than paying you in cash, will instead give you a loan note – a promise to pay you the purchase price over a period of usually three to five years. Repayments are then funded by the newly acquired business, with these profits passed to its holding company free of any further tax charge on the dividend. This cash is then available in the holding company to pay off part of the loan note. Management buyouts can be a tax efficient option for both parties. Vendors still pay capital gains tax at the more attractive entrepreneurs’ relief rate of 10%, and, because transferring funds from one company in a group to another is generally tax free, purchasers pay no further tax charge. And, management buyouts don’t have to be confined to purchases by existing management teams. This tax-effective structure works equally well for any purchaser. For more information on management buyouts and selling your business tax-efficiently, please email pete.miller@themillerpartnership.com or call us on 0116 208 1020

Why DJ’s vs. playlists will always win

Christmas Parties with good music…

We may complain about Christmas – the clichés, the pressures, the commercialisation, the enforced messages and the ruinous expense. But there is so much to love. It’s about joy, family and ludicrous, nonsensical traditions that we cherish and maintain by prefixing them with the word ‘festive’. So sit back and relax and let us explain why Christmas is such a unique time of year for us here at Lumbers.

It isn’t an impossible scenario, honestly! Christmas parties obviously need a certain level of fun, and the cheesy tunes do have their place, but a Christmas party soundtrack needn’t be all cheese.

Here at Lumbers Christmas is certainly a welcomed sight to both Dominic and his team. The aroma of Scottish Pine nestled amongst our collections of both watches and jewellery whilst copious amounts of mulled wine flow amongst our clients is certainly a sight to behold. The joy of giving and sharing amongst family and friends is at the heart of Christmas and our team aims to make sure all angles are covered when it comes to finding the perfect gift this holiday season. Our ‘Lumbers Lifestyle’ collection holds multiple luxury brands. From Aspinal of London and Montblanc to Chopard or Georg Jensen the perfect gift is just around the corner for your loved ones. Lumbers also offers a helping hand at Christmas, with extended opening hours to help our clients looking for that extra special gift for the Christmas tree. From everyone here at Lumbers we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Rob Jones 0116 255 1233 lumbers.co.uk 74 | NICHE

So, how do we pull off a corporate Christmas party dancefloor that is packed, fun and stylish at the same time? Well, the good news is it is achievable. Here’s how we go about it… Firstly, we work to the client’s brief. Perhaps there’s a theme, or maybe they have an idea of the genre, style or feel of the music that they want or, maybe they have no preference at all! Either way, we can work with clients to get the party vibe they want. Secondly, we consider the fact that corporate Christmas events are usually a very mixed crowd of varying ages and tastes, this is usually where we go for the ‘classics’, where we bring out songs that we know will work for the demographic. Thirdly, we ‘read’ our audience on the night itself. Because we have a huge catalogue of tracks we can bring out what we know will work with the party in the moment, this is one of the biggest advantages of having a DJ at your event rather than a pre-planned playlist rigged up to a sound system. HR Audit Is your company compliant with employment law? In my last article for Niche Magazine I covered the removal of employment tribunal fees which will now inevitably lead to an increase in level of the number of claims against employers. Therefore, it is extremely important that as an employer your company is fully compliant with the law in order to minimise the risk of potential claim either via the employment tribunal and/ or civil court system. The best way to stay compliant is to make sure that you have access to HR and employment law expertise. This would initially start with a Human Resources Audit which will provide a ‘health check’ for the organisation from an HR perspective. Following the completion of a comprehensive HR audit the results are fed back within a detailed report which will include a clear action plan. Such an action plan will highlight any areas of a critical nature where there needs to be action taken immediately together with any specific HR requirements a company may have. How to: debt recovery Founder of Corporate Debt Solutions Global, Ashley Barratt, explains the ins and outs of credit management

T

hink of it like a bath with the tap stuck on full and the plug glued to the basin – most collection agencies only ever bail the water out, whereas we bail out the water, lever the plug out and eventually stick a new washer on the tap. Now the tap may always drip but it will be at a much slower rate. CDSG do all of this on a nowin, no-fee basis only taking a percentage from the receivables. We never charge an up-front fee and all analytics and advice are completed prior to a client instructing us again, again all for free. The joy of working with CDS is that we provide analytics on how much of a client’s debt book is recoverable and advise on how they could stop finding themselves in this position again, helping fix the front end problem rather than continually bailing them out. This is achieved by combining analytics and an intuitive collections system to target debtors that have the ability to pay. Historically, credit management companies

76 | NICHE

have bucketed debtors into two categories: the ‘can’t pay’s’ and the ‘won’t pay’s’. The background algorithm developed by CDS Global identifies both debtor types and aims to mitigate the reasons for them not to pay the bill. The system then takes the base information about the debtors, applies the ‘collectability score’ and selects the best medium to contact the company that owes the monies. Our success rate for a debtor resolution currently stands at 92 per cent. This benchmark is only achievable because of the team behind the scenes negotiating with clients. We have 22 staff, most of which are multilingual allowing us to be a truly global company. Currently, CDS Global are recovering monies across Europe, North America and the UK. Those in Business have their say

365 days of publicity If you’re looking for a way to promote your company, here’s a subtle way for you to get in front of your customers. A 2018 desktop calendar will promote you all year round. Consider each month an advertising space to be taken advantage of and a great opportunity to increase your brand awareness. Calendars are a necessity for every business, so with your logo printed on every page, you will be low-key advertising your business all year round whilst offering a useful and unique gift to your valued clients and potential new ones. Digital calendars may have their use as well but most employees benefit from their own personal, physical calendar they can flash their eyes at to keep on top of their day. They’ll be used for birthdays, meetings, holidays, deadlines and more, meaning your company will be in front of your audience’s personal and work life.

Killer online sales tactics for 2017

Catering for weddings where quality matters

It’s absolutely crucial that you understand the decision-making process behind e-commerce if you want to succeed. Every business is unique, but the rules never change.

It goes without saying your wedding catering on your big day is a big deal, so why cut corners? Dimblebee Catering have catered for over 60,000 guests and whilst some wedding bloggers like to fill pages with amazing advice about going ‘DIY’ or down the package route - our advice is don’t – unless you know (I mean really know) what you are doing!

Understand your customer You have to be proactive and engage with customers in person, phone, email or even on social media. This becomes invaluable for creating detailed customer profiles. If you’ve had complaints in the past, don’t ignore them - learn from them! Build trust A great customer experience starts with brand awareness. Then, you simply need to provide helpful information to make their life easier. Later you can build on that relationship. Persuasive selling techniques will only work once trust is established. Have a fantastic website Slow, outdated and uninspired websites cost retailers billions every year. Making a brilliant first impression is vital but also, the journey from clicking onto your site, finding a product or service and reaching checkout or enquiry stage needs to be lightning fast. If not, your customers will abandon your site.

The one-off, cost-effective promotional tool is easy to customise with our experienced designers, so you can be sure that your calendar will compliment your branding so that your marketing flows seamlessly. Once you’ve distributed your bespoke desktop calendars, the next time your services are needed, you will be front of mind. The functional gift will be appreciated by your clients and show them you value their custom. It’s the perfect way to be seen 365 days of the year. Chris Goodman

The Dimblebee Catering Team understand that most couples have never tied the knot before and with budgets always a concern it is often too easy to listen to the sirens’ voice of well-meaning advisors, but really...do you really want to dress your tables yourself at 9am on your wedding day, or to take delivery of 25 crates of glassware? Sometimes it’s best to only cut the right corners if needs must but remember, it is one of the most significant days in your life, and you should be free to enjoy it. This is where Dimblebee’s have the real life experience to help. Try opting for two courses instead of three – you can always increase the number of canapes to act as a moving starter. Do you really need two wine glasses on the table? How about having the wedding breakfast later in the day so the evening catering doesn’t need to be so thorough? How about high quality naked wood guest tables to remove the need for table linens? We know our stuff, and with a host of awards and wonderful reviews under our belt, we hope that we may be able to be of service to you too. Samantha Dimblebee 0116 283 3327 dimblebeecatering.co.uk

Give us a sign!

BEFORE

First impressions, credibility, and the most important ad your business will ever have

‘I

t’s often seen as an expense more often than it is an investment,’ says Misho Djondric company director of MD Signs & Fabrications. As you may have guessed from Misho’s line of business, we’re talking about signage. He says the sign you choose to represent your business is like an advert that works for you 24/7, 365 days of the year. “First impressions are very important. It represents what you’re selling, the personality of the business, and it’s your chance to have your name up in lights,” he explains. A bad sign affects credibility and can turn customers away. One of Misho’s clients has increased their customer base and turnover since updating their sign and undergoing a shop front makeover. Meeting with clients personally, he assesses the premises seeking out where to get the most out of a sign.

“No sign is the same, every shop front is different, and every building has its own structure. Some businesses are in obscure locations and want to pay huge amounts for a sign that no one will ever see so I will be honest and advise how to make it work. “I always do a site walk checking out the traffic flow, and angles and heights to best catch people’s eye. Some people are in prime locations and aren’t taking advantage of their position. It’s often subconscious for people but for someone who drives past on the way to work who suddenly needs the product or service you provide, they’ll think of you because they see your sign every day.” Taking into consideration the exterior, interior décor, colours, font, wording and character of the business, Misho mocks up a few designs to choose from and

adapt ensuring the branding flows. A structural site survey is then followed before manufacture. Misho ends with: “I’ve done a lot of work for the beauty industry lately and if people are spending their hard earned money on looking beautiful then your beautiful sign will draw them to your place of business. It’s the most important ad you’ll have.”

SEO Optimisation Search Engine

Optimise your website to get higher search engine rankings

As your business grows, you can move up through the ranks to get bigger and better results from all the major search engines and for multiple search terms

Why should you do this?

of web traffic comes from web searches

82 | NICHE

It’s the biggest growing media evolution and every single one of your competitors are in on it. A search engine only features the sites that it values most in terms of reputation and relevance to the keywords or key phrases a person has used in order to look for an answer to their question. Statistically, the website with the sought after number one position will receive more clicks than any of the other suggested sites below it. The higher you rank, the more trustworthy and credible your website will appear.

How do you get to number one?

There are two types of search listings. Organic listings (also known as free or natural listings) will be sites that have regular quality content such as blogs, links to reliable sources, and lots of social media shares. Advertised listings (also known as sponsored listings) have been paid for to be at the top of

of all organic clicks are on the top 5 results

search results. SEO is all about making it easier for people to find your site, so updating your content with keywords, links, and phrases as well as information relevant to searches will gain you more organic clicks. It’s also important to understand the way a search engine thinks, works and organises itself. You might tag a picture on Instagram as a steakhouse beef burger with extra cheese and a side of fries but as intelligent as search engines are, they aren’t so sophisticated to recognise it in this way. To achieve top rankings on Google, Yahoo or Bing you need to act like a human, think like a search engine.

5

reasons to keep

this festive tradition

About to send your Christmas emails out? CHRIS GOODMAN, director of print company Soar Valley Press says don’t press send

Y

ear after year, the number of Christmas cards we receive from contacts and suppliers dwindles. Many have replaced them with emails, and others just no longer bother with the annual tradition. But is cutting the corporate Christmas card from the marketing budget really a good idea? Or is this a prime marketing and relationship-building opportunity being missed? Here are five reasons why sending out corporate Christmas cards is important and offers greater value to businesses than ever before.

1

Emails are no replacement for Christmas cards Promotional emails definitely have their place, but not as a replacement for a Christmas card. What if your family members didn’t bother with a birthday card this year, and just sent a quick template email as a replacement? How would this change your perception of them and how they value your relationship?

2

It’s the season to look for new suppliers For many businesses, the end of the year is a natural review point.

For existing customers, a corporate Christmas card is a great reminder that you value their business and look forward to a continuation of great relations into the next year. For potential customers, a corporate Christmas card can be a wonderfully timed piece of marketing which says ‘is your current supplier not treasuring your business? We will.’

3

It goes against the current trend As businesses stop sending out Christmas cards, the impact your own card can make is greatly increased. A few years ago, each new card would be quickly read and added to the collection of others. As the number of cards sent out has dropped, the promotional power your own card has will be increased.

4

Christmas cards have a long and prominent shelf life Send out a flyer or leaflet, and it may be read and find its way

into recycling shortly afterwards. Christmas Cards are different. There is a cultural imperative to display them predominately and keep them.

5

It can stimulate new business for the quieter months For many businesses, January and February constitute the ‘quiet’ time of year. Placing a New Year offer within your Christmas card can be a great way to stimulate new business during January and give your turnover an early kick. For Christmas cards designed in your company’s brand, get in touch.

Even if you don’t know what your expectations are, there is something to suit with a range of predesigned event packages as well as entirely bespoke packages: “Some clients have a clear idea of exactly what they want whilst others simply want us to take the reins, either way we are happy to do all that we can to bring the event together and help make it a success!”

Jenny Cross, Director at Cross Productions fancied a day of life in the fast lane…

W

ho doesn’t want to spend a day driving some of the world’s most prestigious super cars? I was invited to try out life in the fast lane at the world’s largest supercar driving experience company, Driving experiences at Prestwold Hall in Leicestershire, and I jumped at the chance.

I am a supercar virgin and so when Driving Experiences contacted us to see if we wanted a day of thrill seeking driving I said yes quickly and couldn’t wait to get to grips with the steering wheel. The day came and first up I was very impressed with the hospitality suite, a bit of caffeine and I was raring and revving to go.

this was my pick of the powerful bunch and with such refined road handling it’s a true supercar in my book. Last but not least was the Ferrari, the quintessential special car. Racing red, 380bhp of mind blowing V8 power and the unmistakeable Ferrari sound – another dream to drive.

Driving Experiences is one of the UK’s premier operators. With over 37 years of experience in thrilling petrolheads and curious car enthusiasts, the company has a fleet of over 125 cars to choose from. The first UK operator to offer the Ferrari Experience, the first to give people a chance to drive a genuine F1 Grand Prix car, Everyman lead where the rest follow. Their 14 countrywide locations mean every man and every woman can enjoy all the thrills of driving a supercar.

The first car of the day was the Audi R8, a slick, sophisticated car of futuristic construction and luxury refinement – it’s a genuine masterpiece. With its 4.2 litre V8 engine, 414bhp, four-wheel-drive and a top speed of 187mph, the R8 was just as awesome as I’d hoped. Then it was time for the Nissan GTR R35 at just under 500bhp and with more computing power than all the NASA Apollo rockets added together as you’d expect it’s one mighty ride. I would have to say

What a day! Needless to say, this beat my average day driving around the city and to and from the school run! The team were friendly, professional and most of all keen to share their passion for the cars with everyone. I can see why it is simply the best driving experience provider in the country.

More than your average A conference and event location in the heart of Leicester’s historical quarter

S

t Martins House is becoming one of our city’s most sought after conference, corporate and event locations and it’s easy to see why. A visit to the building, which was originally built in 1877, isn’t your typical business trip. Steeped in history and ideally positioned in the city’s cathedral quarter, delegates and guests can enjoy some of the exciting new additions to the area since the discovery of Richard III’s remains nearby. The facilities available however, are anything but historical with the once grammar school building having gone through extensive renovations over the years which have always remained sensitive to the building’s original features. The stunning Grade II listed former Grammar school now features the

contemporary additions needed to become one of the Midlands’ most unique conference and events locations. Standing out from the crowd, St Martins House is an altogether very impressive building that makes conferences, meetings, events and presentations inspiring and memorable experiences. With a wide range of meeting rooms to suit diverse audience sizes and requirements, as well as up-tothe-minute AV facilities included in the rates, the conference and events centre exceeds expectation. Being positioned right next to the Cathedral, delegates can take their breaks in the renovated courtyard area which boasts a stunning garden, plenty of seating and of course the opportunity to soak up this lovely scenic location.

Many notable companies consider the building as an excellent choice for their conferencing and event needs including Estee Lauder, BNI Hydra and Marks & Spencer to name a few, in addition to many local charity and community events. A dedicated events organiser will arrange every detail, whether it’s a cabaret style event in the stunning Grand Hall for up to 200 people complete with breathtaking high vaulted ceilings and historical features, three course gala dinners, cocktails and entertainment or an intimate small gathering event in the 19th century styled Bishops room for up to 12 people accompanied by buffet-style nibbles and soft drinks. Free WIFI throughout and essential tea and coffee facilities in each room as well as a wide choice in award-

business location winning catering options. In fact, St Martins House recently played host to none other than The Queen herself as she enjoyed lunch after visiting the Cathedral to complete her Maundy visits. The roster of notable visitors continues with The Lord’s Taverners choosing St Martins House for their launch dinner for the East Midlands Regional Leicestershire Branch. Add to the exceptional facilities and unique, historical setting a host of excellent hotels in the local area and of course brilliant transport links and you have a world-class conferencing venue right here in our thriving Leicester business network. 0116 261 5200 stmartinshouse.com

The best of both worlds The options for a UK wedding can feel a little ‘samey’ can’t they? With the choice between a countryside wedding complete with rustic or historical charm or a city location that’s contemporary. However, St Martins are offering a refreshing change to this all-toocommon wedding venue dilemma. Their stunning city location boasts historical features, contemporary luxuries and excellent hotels nearby as well as unbeatable transport links – it’s basically the best of both worlds! The Grade II listed former grammar school building sits right next door to Leicester’s Cathedral and with the

area recently enjoying somewhat of a ‘spruce up’ there are an abundance of photo opportunities. Inside, the building boasts lots of lovely original features as well as contemporary additions in order to provide a prime wedding reception venue for the area’s newlyweds. The Grand Hall, which includes gorgeous soaring ceilings and beautiful windows with lots of natural light, is perfect for those looking for a spacious, elegant reception and, along with a dedicated wedding co-ordinator, the happy couple can create the wedding reception of their dreams. Everards created ‘friendly inns’ in the 1960s in an effort to

make pubs more welcoming and inclusive. This ethos has lived on through each generation of the Everard family. Pubs are important over the winter season bringing people together over common Christmas interests! If you’re looking to celebrate with friends and work mates throughout the festive period, swap secret Santa presents or you’re wanting to book Christmas dinner, your local is the perfect place for it all. everards.co.uk NICHE | 93

F

resh from their win at The Niche Business Awards 2017, we had a natter with Abbots Oak proprietors Sarah and Anthony Kurr about all the exciting things going on nestled in their beautifully restored Grade II listed boutique hotel near Charnwood Forest. Delighted at their wedding services win, the couple told us they are still taking it all in: “We were so excited to have been nominated in the first place but to have won, well, we are just thrilled and the award already has pride of place in the house!” We have a feeling adding awards to their cabinet is going to be something they do quite often. Since the boutique hotel opened its doors to the public, Abbots Oak has gathered momentum as one of our most beloved hotel and venues in the country, with locals dropping in to enjoy the bar and sample the food as well as couples celebrating the biggest day of

94 | NICHE

Award-winning Abbots Oak are looking forward to a spectacular, cosy Christmas and invite you to join them their lives. Sarah told us: “We are starting to see many familiar faces at the manor and it’s so nice to see. From the beginning, we knew we wanted others to be able to enjoy the building and people are really starting to see Abbots as somewhere to visit regularly. Our chef Paul has created a reputation already for our food and people are coming to see us from all over to enjoy a lovely meal and have a relaxing stay.” For the hardworking couple, this was the result they wanted, for others to be able to enjoy the building like they do. Of course, it hasn’t always been an enjoyable place to be, the couple lived in what was a damp building site as they lovingly restored the building along with local builders and craftsmen to its current luxurious state. “The fact that it hasn’t always been a pleasant place to be only makes the luxurious touches all the nicer for us! We always believed the

building was special and through our fair share of blood, sweat and tears, everyone else can see its beauty too. The building itself is steeped in history and we worked hard along with local renovators to retain much of its rustic charm and many of its original features and works of art. We knew we wanted to breathe new life into the building rather than loose its uniqueness,” Sarah enthused. With its grand staircase, wood panelled walls, exceptional views and dining room carvings of Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh, it is all in the details at Abbots and it is these details which make it a beautiful venue of choice for many a happy couple on their wedding day. Combine that with the exceptional food, service and exclusivity of the hotel and you have an award-winning wedding location. The recent addition of a new private dining room and an array of corporate meeting rooms

has placed Abbots as the ideal location for businesses looking for a professional, welcoming and unique corporate meeting venue. As you can imagine with such a beautiful home, the couple can’t wait for Christmas at Abbots Oak. “I just love Christmas and in a house like this it really comes into its own at the festive season. To be providing a luxury, seasonal experience in the run up and on Christmas day itself is a joy! It’s got such a cosy, country Christmas feel and guests can expect warm open fires, traditional décor, festive drinks and feasts fit for royalty!” Head Chef Paul Leary has prepared a menu which makes for mouthwateringly good reading and it’s filled with Christmas classics. “It’s no secret that we love our food and together with Paul we can’t wait to treat guests to a gastronomic feast

this Christmas!” There won’t be a slice of dried turkey in sight with delights such as rare breed pork fillet served with crispy trotter, sage and chestnut porridge and port braised onion shells for starters, butter basted local turkey, crispy pork and chestnut bon bon, spiced sprouts and cranberries for mains and white chocolate, duck egg hogweed tart with candied fruit and lemon curd ice cream for dessert. The Christmas menu is accompanied by coffee and mince pies (if you can squeeze them in) and music too. Christmas at Abbots looks set to be very special indeed and we are counting down the days ‘til we can celebrate with Sarah and Anthony at the end of an incredible year for Abbots Oak in this quintessential country Christmas setting. 01530 833 952 abbotsoak.co.uk

FOX LAND ROVER

win big

at the Niche Business Awards 2017 Rural based specialist Fox Land Rover of Husbands Bosworth receives Winning award for ‘Services to the Motor Industry’ against stiff opposition

F

ox Land Rover Service Manager Bill Saund said of their win: “I cannot begin to explain how elated we are to win this Niche Business Award. It is a fantastic achievement for the whole team and it’s great to be recognised for all the effort and dedication which has been devoted to getting the business underway. “We could only have achieved this by the continued support, recommendations and referrals along with repeat business of our growing customers; and we’re thrilled to see our efforts and service to the community being rewarded.” The company provides specialist support for Land Rover owners in the local area and surrounding counties, and prides itself in exceptional levels of customer service.

98 | NICHE

Fox’s team of highly experienced, factory-trained Land Rover technicians look after customers from Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and farther afield. They are all Land Rover owners themselves, and the friendly and professional approach of this independent service centre has made Fox a sought-after alternative to the main dealer network. Customers rate the services at Fox very highly, as this typical testimonial proves: “Just wanted to say a massive thank you for going above and beyond and saving our family holiday. When the car was fully packed with kids, dog and up to the roof in luggage and it turned out we couldn’t even move it, you amazingly produced a replacement courtesy car for the whole week, allowing us to get to Cornwall as planned. I will not hesitate to

recommend you to anyone in the future,” Martin Smith. Bill told us of the recent move to selling Land Rovers, both new and used, in addition to the servicing and MoTs: “Clients often approached us asking if we could get them a new model, and with the knowledge of the vehicles we have, we realised it would be a natural and logical progression for the business.” Dealing with the latest models as well as classic examples of this iconic 4x4 brand, Fox Land Rover offer modern skills in a comfortable location with good, solid, reliable old-fashioned service – and that’s a rare combination in the world of modern motoring. 01858 571 122 foxlandrover.co.uk

ere’s what you need to do to ensure your Land Rover stays in tip top, fighting fit condition this winter. Changing the oil This will improve the viscosity of oil and therefore be more suitable for colder conditions. Changing the oil simply ticks things over more efficiently. Tyre check Checking the tread and replacing the tyres as needed is crucial as winter’s often adverse conditions such as ice, and wet surfaces crop up. Of course, the Land Rover is built for such things but looking after the tyres will ensure it stays top of its game. Check on the brake system This is vital because your brakes need to be in top condition to cope with winter weather conditions.

Replace the windscreen wipers You will need optimal clarity in weather conditions that might prove slightly more challenging visibility-wise so changing them for newer ones is always a good idea. Check the heating This one isn’t vital for your vehicle’s performance but it’s pretty vital for you the driver and any potential passengers, especially for those nippier early mornings starts! Visit us ahead of the colder months for a thorough and expert winter check to ensure your vehicle remains in top condition. We have a warm waiting area complete with cosy sofas and tea and coffee on tap! Bill Saund 01858 571 122 foxlandrover.co.uk

Football’s BEST KEPT SECRET

Plans to channel Premier League money into the local community are in action after a new LCFC Community Trust director is appointed

L

ess than a week into her new role, Allison Tripney already had strategies in place ready to reshape the Leicester City Football Club Community Trust when she joined the charity in September. This was a game changer for the club’s trust having had an interim director since 2016. Despite having had over 35,000 young people involved since its formation in 2006, the trust is relatively overlooked within the wider community. With the aim to develop the trust to match the achievements of the club, Allison hopes her and her team’s efforts will complete the club’s vision and 102 | NICHE

will involve the community every step of the way. She said: “This is a new era. The trust hasn’t had a full time director since December so this is an opportunity to review what we’re doing and form partnerships with others.” The new director has plans to develop young people’s education, health and community cohesion by working with the police, as well as the rebranding of the trust. Young people have benefited from specific programmes that aim to provide routes into education, training and employment.

New to Leicester, Allison came from West Bromwich Albion’s Albion Foundation. As a deputy director for the charity handling a more diverse range of income streams and directing them into different areas of the community, she felt ready to take on the Leicester trust. Funded by the Premier League, LCFC, Leicestershire Police and working with a range of schools, Allison explained: “There is so much money within the game and the stadiums can often be in the heart of deprived communities. We want to use that money to put back into the community. We don’t want football to become disengaged

We’re all for sport for all and encourage trying different things

with the public and there are so many highly paid professionals; our job is to connect the two.” Projects under Allison’s direction are already underway with hopes of having established an instantly recognisable brand and presence across Leicestershire by 2020 when a new training ground is set up increasing their geographical reach. “We’re in a good position to respond to a need but we are football’s best kept secret. We’ll be identifying what we can relate to football and inspire from it. We acknowledge that football is a powerful brand but that might not be what some young people are interested in. We’re all for sport for all and encourage trying different things and seeing what interests them,” Allison told us. One project starting in January will relate primary science curriculum to football: “Science is getting squeezed; they’re lucky if they can

get in 1 1/2 hours a week and need support with resources.” Working with the Primary Science Trust and National Space Centre, a 10 week course will be delivered where a science teacher comes in to teach based around football. Through their own research, they have found attendance to be an issue across the secondary sector and are creating a project that uses football as an incentive. Committed to being accessible and inclusive on all levels, the charity took 50 young refugees to Wembley stadium for the England V Slovenia World Cup Qualifier. Allison hopes the transformation will attract more young people and sponsors in order to grow the brand and reflect the local community.

Learning a new skill with Aerial Anna

A wind of change blows through autumn

The PRIDE of Leicester Lions!

The art of performing on any piece of aerial equipment makes it look easy but don’t be fooled, it is extremely challenging. You gain strength, co-ordination and flexibility whilst learning in a fun and safe environment. It’s a great all over body workout.

At the time of writing, in late October, storm Brian is blowing across Leicester and with it, a wind of change is blowing across some of the city’s major sporting teams. At King Power Stadium, Craig Shakespeare has departed and a new permanent managerial appointment is awaited. There are plenty of names being speculated upon in the media but the owners are unlikely to be influenced by the betting market as they decide on the best man to take the club forward from here. At Grace Road too, change is in the air. The everpopular Paul Nixon has been appointed as head coach and has been charged with lifting the cricketing Foxes from the bottom of the pile to a more respectable and appropriate level. One thing is certain: there will be no lack of enthusiasm on show next season.

Formed back in 1999 from the merger of Westleigh RFC and Wigston RFC, the Lions have made their mark on Leicestershire rugby.

I’m an international performer and am offering lessons in my speciality, aerial silks classes! I teach aerial arts all over Leicestershire. My classes at OLGC are suitable for all levels; beginners learn movements close to the ground, understanding wraps, locks, knots, body positioning and climbing techniques. While intermediate and advanced students work on putting together longer sequences, smoothing out transitions and learning my speciality; big drops! We have a Christmas special offer for adults and 16+: 6 weeks for £60 Thursdays 20:00-21:00 November 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th & December 7th, 14th Pay as you go sessions are available but spaces are limited. Please wear tight fitting clothes (cotton is ideal, avoid lycra) and bring layers. No zips, buttons, jewellery or long nails as these may damage the silks. For Leicester Lions, change has thankfully been avoided as the team overcame Sheffield Tigers in the promotion-relegation play off to maintain their position in the Elite League. At Welford Road, Tigers appear to have changed to a more exciting free-running style of rugby under Matt O’Conner, with the Youngs-Ford-Toomua axis beginning to open up opportunities for newcomer Jonny May on the wing seemingly every week. Even the toughest of Champions Cup draws suddenly looks far from impossible. While at the Leicester Arena a rebuilt Riders squad carries on pretty much as before – wait a minute; they have only gone and lost a home fixture! Is there nothing the sporting public in Leicester can rely on any more? Dave Smith Dave@crossproductions.co.uk

As one of the leading amateur sides in the county, they now play in National 2N, finishing 3rd for the past two seasons. Their Saturday afternoon games are always competitive with fast, free flowing rugby that’s bound to give you a thirst for more. With a thriving mini/junior section and a female Lionesses side, the pride is growing. There are age groups from U6 to U14 training every Sunday morning at TMDP Park, Lutterworth Road, Blaby, LE8 4DY, so why not join in. TMDP Group are going into their second year of their three year sponsorship with the club with a member of the team sitting on the committee to ensure money is being invested in the best possible way. TMDP offer staff and client match day events and have thoroughly enjoyed supporting and investing in their local community. The future looks bright for Leicester Lions with a young 1st XV and a competitive 2nd XV, and growing support from the local community and their sponsors. The Club will soon be able to accommodate all when they move in to their new clubhouse in a few months’ time. Festive

Race Day 28th December 2017

The perfect day out for all the family and friends is back this winter for Saturday 28th December

F

illing the gap between Christmas and New Year, this year’s Festive Race Day has a lot to offer. So don’t sit around inside waiting for the New Year to come in, make the most of the party season and (if you’re lucky enough) your time off work too! There’s no need to avoid the chill of winter either as all the entertainment will be taking place inside a huge heated marquee. Ready to ‘shine’ on stage is our favourite tribute band Re Take That so ‘get ready for it’ as they plan their set with some popular numbers. They’re the world’s No 1 Take That tribute band and will be playing after the racing into the night. Gates will be open from 11am and racing commences around 12:50pm until 3:30pm. Adults can place their bets and kids can watch the horses before their very eyes or on the big screen showcasing all races live. Inside the marquee a huge variety of street food vendors and bars will be serving lots of unusual and familiar grub and drinks to suit everyone from veggies to gluten-free folk. And that’s not the only option on offer – you can book in advance for a

tasty carvery or a three course table d’hôte in the fabulous Nelson Suite. After dinner, guests will gather to view a spectacular Christmas themed fireworks display seeing the pretty colours go off to music. It will be arranged by Komodo Fireworks; the same company who created the Ladies Day display that wowed 13,001 guests this year. What’s more, under 17s gain free entry when accompanied by a paying adult. However, you must register their ticket online. The racecourse has been around since 1773. They now have 31 race meetings a year, there are a whopping 108 stables on the racecourse and 6 special security stables for those high profile horses! The magnificent racecourse grounds cover 220 acres of beautiful greenery so will make the perfect day and night out in this frosty festive season. 0116 271 6515 leicester-racecourse.co.uk Facebook: Leicester Racecourse Twitter: @LeicesterRaces

aving just returned from pre-season trips with the Leicester Riders in Prague and the student team in Norway, Max reflects on his time in Leicestershire. “It’s been an incredible journey so far, I’ve changed as a person both on and off court, and met some amazing friends here,” reflected Max.

“I’ve become a more diverse player on court, playing in different positions, and that has in turn given me a drastic improvement to my game.” Richardson joined Loughborough in 2014 having reached out to the head coach and Riders assistant coach Mark Jarram earlier that summer. “It came down to Loughborough, Northumbria, Plymouth and Worcester. But after visiting the camps, it was where I could see myself the most. “I had a good chat with Coach Mark and my coach at the time, Tom Ward. That summer I also played at Deng Camp (Luol Deng’s basketball camp), which is where Mark first saw me play. I ended up ranked 14 but went on to win the MVP in the All-star game.” Max has been a pivotal part of the Loughborough team winning the last two University National finals (BUCS), back-to-back Champions! their history, win the Patrons Cup and reach for the Play-off Final for the first time last year. “It’s been a special time to be a part of it and we have further to go. My aims for this season are to continue to develop my versatility whilst assisting the team achieve its goals. Helping my teammates achieve their goals, alongside completing my degree. “I’ve had the opportunity to play and train with the BBL side, Leicester Riders, over the pre-season period. It’s been fantastic, I’ve tried to soak up everything. I have things to improve upon but I am keen to learn from those guys on the team and take my game to the next level.”

A cosy break

away from it all

It’s a rare treat that we find ourselves relaxing for the weekend but when we do, we do so in style. Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa invited us to their beautiful location in the heart of Newmarket. Originally built in the 18th Century as a hunting lodge for the sixth Duke of Bedford, the stunning building was converted to a hotel for all to enjoy in the 1940s. Today, the Hotel and spa is the perfect combination of old and new with many of its original features preserved and luxurious, modern touches and creature comforts throughout. Upon arrival, we were struck by the building’s character and charm. Nestled in three acres of secluded rose gardens and adjacent to some of the most famous paddocks and training stables in the world; a nod to the town’s historic home of British horse racing roots which date back to 1174. Our room was very special indeed with all the comfort and added touches you could ask for, whilst the awardwinning spa provided some rest and relaxation time within its perfectly indulgent setting. It was easy to see how the five-star Bubble rated

spa destination is one of the most loved in the East of England. Add to the surroundings the very best in experienced therapists, as well as the latest treatments available, and it’s safe to say it’s up there with our personal favourites. The privately-owned boutique Hotel is also home to a renowned bar and restaurant with guests travelling far and wide to sample the food fare for themselves. The 2AA Rosette Restaurant, Squires, is a foodie delight with an eclectic menu and a team of passionate staff who are dedicated to using the finest seasonal ingredients all sourced within a 50-mile radius. Our choices were tricky ones to make, we were spoilt with options! We went for a Crab Croquetas and Truffle Ravioli, which both set the scene perfectly and for our mains, we plumped for Denham Venison and Spinach and Tarragon Rosti, both were cooked perfectly with the most amazing ‘supporting cast’ of accompaniments. Dessert time (aka the best time) also didn’t disappoint and we can highly

recommend not one, but two from the restaurant’s impressive menu – look out for the taste explosion that is The Terra ‘Cotta Pot’ and the classic with a twist Frozen Eton Mess. We will most certainly be back, it’s the perfect relaxing destination year-round but we love it for a cosy, winter warming break. Go on, you deserve it! 0800 652 2991 bedfordlodgehotel.co.uk NICHE | 111

Dream BIG says international Leicester born star

A universal artist will be hosting the Leicester Music and Entertainment Awards (LMEA) honouring the city’s vibrant music scene – EMILY KIRTON caught up with the star

B

izzi Dixon has experienced it all in the music industry. He’s toured America, frequented the charts and even made it to the final eight on The Voice UK, 2014. Today he continues to have a prolific impact on the industry performing all over the world; coaching and producing all being part of the day job. The man’s enthusiasm and passion for music is infectious, after our conversation I headed straight to

the record player and dug out the greats. But, I digress, here’s the lowdown of a chat with the friendliest guy in the industry himself… The son of Pentecostal Ministers, Bizzi honed his craft from an early age performing in gospel choirs and teaching himself not one but four of the key instruments: “It was an amazing environment to learn in, I taught myself to play the drums, keyboard, guitar and

piano by ear which obviously provided me with a great musical understanding. I just loved music from an early age; listening to it, playing it and singing it and that’s never gone away.” After being asked to join UK R’n’B group Rhythm & Bass as one of the lead vocalist and songwriter, Bizzi went on to set up award winning company Bad Music Entertainment (BME) enabling Bizzi to travel around the UK

I just loved music from an early age; listening to it, playing it and singing it and that’s never gone away assisting young people as a vocal tutor and songwriter and in music production. He explained why he feels having something which taps into young people’s talent could be the answer to boosting our area’s music scene and the community: “Music has a way of building bridges, relationships and confidence, it’s just that so often for lots of reasons like lack of support in schools or families, funds and even being oblivious to the talent they might have, they don’t pursue a career in it. I want to change that. There is so much talent right on our doorstep here in Leicester, it’s just that often it goes un-nurtured and unnoticed.” It’s for these reasons that Bizzi came up with the LMEA to celebrate the achievements that local musicians and other individuals have made to the Leicester music scene. It will be hosted at Athena in Queen Street on Thursday 22nd February 2018. His enthusiasm to encourage people to showcase their talents and recognise those of others is the spirit and reasoning behind the upcoming ceremony. His experience in PR and marketing through his career means that over 2000 nominations have been made by the public. The finalists will come under 13 categories celebrating Leicester’s performers, up and coming artists, venues, bands, DJs, radio stations, and more.

The awards will give Leicester the chance to acknowledge and appreciate the successes presented at the prestigious black tie ceremony. The red carpet event will treat guests to a champagne reception, a two course meal, and fantastic after party. There will also be TV filming and surprise guest performers on the night. Keen to be a role model to his young family and other youngsters too, the music maestro hopes that people start to take notice of Leicester as a seriously talented city. “There can be so much positive change brought about by simply engaging with young people in a way that they can relate to. I was told at school that ‘there was no way I could make it as a singer or make a career out of it’ and look at me now! If there was a way that we could tap into the talents of each and every individual within this vibrant city and nurture that talent, wow, the positive effects would be huge I think.”

Bizzi will be organising the

Leicester Music & Entertainment Awards 22nd February 2018 ATHENA tickets available from eventbrite.co.uk

We couldn’t agree more Bizzi, and what a role model for young people everywhere. On a final note he remarked, “dreams keep you alive,” and with that he got the flight call to return home from his superstar travels and get back to organising the LMEA.

The talented musician travels all over the world, and called us for a chat from Greece’s airport complete with views of palm trees in 30-degree heat where he had just performed. Last week it was Portugal and next week Greece again! It’s all go, but he tells us even though he misses his family whilst he’s away, he’s thankfull for the life he leads. “I have so much gratitude for the fact that I get to live my dream, I still get so much joy from performing and helping others achieve their dreams to be on stage, I just know that joy will never leave me! Music is in my veins.” NICHE | 113

Culture in Leicester

For your consideration... budget and lack of recognisable stars, this savagely smart thriller has chilling horror overtones, is fiercely racially relevant and laugh out loud funny. Detroit, Kathryn Bigelow’s tale of the city’s 1967 street riots with its depiction of racial tension is searingly prescient, although the lack of behind the camera representation has raised eyebrows.

I

t feels like only yesterday since Oscars Envelopegate, and now we have the movies ‘for your consideration’ as Academy members will determine the winners at the historic 90th Academy Awards on Sunday March 4th 2018.

Battle of the Sexes is a timely tale of the legendary Billie Jean King’s 1973 tennis match with former champ Bobby Riggs. Sparks fly between Emma Stone’s fiercely feminist King and Steve Carrell’s misogynistic Riggs.

Get Out is a fabulously sharp social satire and one of my favourite films of 2017. Despite its small scale, low

The Current War has Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon facing off as Thomas Edison and

George Westinghouse in the race to bring electricity to America. The Papers brings together multiple Oscar recipients Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks as newspaper publisher Kay Graham, and Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, whose publication of the Pentagon Papers sparked a now familiar war between media and government. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread is already being dubbed ‘Daniel Day Lewis’s Last Oscar’ if news of his early retirement from film is to be believed. A world

beyond the front door

Theatre group Bamboozle is recruiting for the 70seventy fundraising challenge, here’s how to get involved

F

rom our back gardens to as far as Australia, most of us are held back by very little. But for a severely disabled Mollie Mathias and her family, life can be a struggle with the world ending at their front door. But a day spent with Leicester based Bamboozle theatre provides a welcome escape. Now’s your chance to be a part of providing children like Mollie with a relaxing, mesmeric, often life changing break. Are you up for climbing the National Three Peaks, cycling across the Pyrenees, or running a marathon around Leicester Racecourse? If so, you will join Bamboozle’s Artistic Director, 69 year old Christopher Davies, who is doing all three challenges in the six weeks leading up to his 70th birthday in June next year.

This is a unique opportunity to run a marathon round the historic Leicester Racecourse which, since 1883, has seen horses galloping at 40 mph – we expect participants to be going a bit more sedately! Held on Saturday 23rd June, the course will be 10 laps of just over 2.5 miles. Christopher cycled the Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees while on holiday in preparation for the cycling part of the challenge and is now in training for the marathon. He said: “I have a training plan devised by Ufit Studio and would love companies and individuals to join me and help raise our target

of £70,000. It’s going to be a party atmosphere on 23rd June with music and activities for the Bamboozle families. Rob Bracken the General Manager at the Racecourse has said runners can have use of the sauna used by jockeys to ease their limbs – I think I might need it!” Bamboozle invites entries from individuals and teams to raise funds

so that children like Mollie can enjoy more of Bamboozle’s immersive theatre days. Sign up at bamboozletheatre.co.uk/70seventy or return the form below. See Mollie’s beyond-the-front-door story at bamboozletheatre.co.uk/ make-a-difference

AWARD SUCCESS AS REGION’S MOST INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN CELEBRATED The inaugural East Midlands Women’s Awards took place at a glamourous celebration on Friday 10th October 2017 at the Falcon Hotel in the Host Town of Uppingham in Rutland highlighting and rewarding some of the region’s most influential Women. The Awards – the first of its kind in the region – invited nominations from the general public, peers and colleagues for women who inspire them most, be that personally or professionally and across ten categories. Presenters were Rupal Rajani, herself a multi award winning presenter working for BBC Radio Leicester, and Maurice Flynn, senior journalist at BBC News and East Midlands Today. Founder of the Award Sandra Pollock said, ‘The gala awards celebration brought together some of the highest achieving women from across the region to recognise and celebrate the diversity and excellence of their achievement and contribution to our economy, arts, innovation, community and many other areas.’ In addition, the awards pay tribute to men who have also made a difference to women’s development by creating opportunities, opening doors and ensuring that what women do is not forgotten or over looked. Three special awards presented on the night were: The Outstanding Creative Entrepreneur awarded to Hannah Dale. This nomination impressed the judges who felt that her achievement in creating and transforming a creative arts business from £1.00 per car to a £3 million a year business employing 20 staff in just 10 years. Judges felt this unusual achievement in the creative industry did not fit into any of the other categories and warranted special recognition. Two other individuals received Lifetime Achievement Awards in Supporting Women, these were: Ron Simpson BEM who over more than 40 years in public, community, enterprise and voluntary services has been the first create opportunities 116 | NICHE

Kazzoo & Mocha Marketing

Host Charity Curry Night The annual Kazzoo Curry night took place at Steamin’ Billy pub The Parcel Yard on Thursday 14th September. This year, Kazzoo joined forces with Mocha Marketing and together they achieved a full house with guests eager for beer, gin or elderflower wine on arrival, a raffle with great prizes including an Amazon Kindle, beer pong, a game of darts, and of course, a fantastic Steamin’ Billy buffet style curry. The gathering was in aid of Hope Against Cancer committed to cancer research projects and clinical trials in Leicestershire and Rutland. Director of Kazzoo, Chris Cain and Managing Director of Mocha, Gemma Orton, aimed to raise £2000 to go directly to the charity, which they thought was ambitious. Astonished, the pair announced that the target had been exceeded by over £500. Later on in the night, the charity was grateful to an incredibly generous businessman who increased the money raised to £3000. Games carried on into the night with very proud teams from Kazzoo, Mocha Marketing and Hope Against Cancer.

Hole in one! Charity Golf Day The annual Niche Magazine golf day is one of our many charity events – and this year raised the fantastic amount of £1,118.75 for Dorothy Goodman School, which specialises in academic and personal development education for children with disabilities. Held at the beautiful Stapleford Park surrounded by 500 acres of Capability Brown landscaped grounds on Thursday 21st September, 11 teams of four enjoyed breakfast before heading out on the course. The day was eventful with betting taking place at Hole 5, a networking lunch in the afternoon, and award ceremony seeing Commercial Flooring Company take the winning trophies. Towergate Insurance were unfortunately handed the wooden spoon but were delighted by the amount raised on the day. Each year the magazine team dedicate the golf day to raising money for a different charity and with its director Jenny Cross recently being elected as ambassador for the school, the choice was an easy one to make. Special thanks go to all sponsors and teams that ranged from Leicester Racecourse to SH Scent.

Mobile film academy at LBF Global media production company Kinetal, hosted an event for the Leicester Business Festival in October. The Mobile Film Academy was hosted by Kinetal’s Director Matt Hughes. Attendees ranged from students to professionals wanting to up their social media game. Matt presented an in depth talk on how to make professional videos on your phone with tons of tips and tricks to do with lighting, sound, angles, mise-en-scene, and affordable devices available to make our videos that bit better. The interactive presentation saw guests pair up and film a 30 second video introducing themselves before the talk and post them into a private group. Matt kick started a discussion covering a range of topics including how social media videos can work for those in industries that rely on a more formal way of presenting their business. But as well as physical tips to use to enhance our videos, Matt also delivered a lesson in self-assurance, how to feel comfortable in front of the camera, and how to remain loyal to our personality on social media as well as in the office.

Soft Touch art auction More than 70 guests and artists attended the first ever Soft Touch Arts fundraising art auction, on Friday 29th September at Abbots Oak Manor hotel in Markfield. Raising £5,500, the aim of the event was to help raise funds to keep the charity’s St-art project running. Supporting young people with mental health issues and other life challenges, the charity gives around 60 young people per year the opportunity to develop hidden creative talents. Artworks were donated by Leicester’s established and up and coming artists, with some works created by beneficiaries of the charity. They were all auctioned off by Lal Sangra, one of Leicesters’ best known independent auctioneers, who gave up his time for free. The highest bid of the night was sent via email for £500 to secure a limited edition print ‘One in Four’ donated by nationally acclaimed artists Scarlett Raven and Marc Marot. Soft Touch director Chris Wigmore who organised the event said it was a thrilling experience for the young people involved.
