Ibiza bound tourists have another route in their arsenal of options with British Airways announcing the start of a new three-times-a-week flight between Edinburgh and Ibiza this weekend. Starting on May 23, the new flight will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays until early August. to the beautiful Balearic island every year. “This new service will offer holidaymakers the opportunity to fly direct from Edinburgh on a scheduled British Airways service with all the advantages of flying with a fullservice carrier, including free online check-in and seat selection 24 hours before departure, and complimentary food and drink on board.
“We look forward to welcoming existing British Airways customers - and those new to the airline - on board this exciting new route.” Ibiza government tourism councillor Carmen Ferrer said: “The new Edinburgh-Ibiza route will bring Scotland and Ibiza closer than ever.

Illegal Street Sellers Detained. On Saturday 31st May the Ibiza Walking Association is organising a ‘Long walk’ as a fund raising event for Ibiza-based charities. The walk starts in San Antonio and ends in Sant Josep. The full route is about 30km but the idea is to stop walking when you get tired – however, the further you walk, the more you raise for charity. Everyone is welcome to join in - no matter what age or fitness - even if you have haven't raised anything in sponsorship. The route has been planned so that it is accessible for everyone, even families with babies in buggies. The first few kilometres are buggy friendly and the first 10km or 15km will be suitable for kids. There will be stopping points at regular intervals. The walk begins at 'The Egg' in San Antonio at 9am and follows the flat and easy coastline via Cala de Bou, Cala Bassa and Cala Comte. There’ll be a stop for lunch at Cala Comte, so take your own picnic. Then things get a little more serious, continuing along the coast to Cala Tarida and then heading inland and over hills to Sant Agusti. After stopping for a brief snack at Bar Can Berri
there’ll be a steep climb over the hill to Sant Josep. This final section will reveal the starting point far below in San Antonio Bay and end with a well-deserved refreshment in a local bar by the church. Every single euro that is raised in sponsorship will go to a number of different Ibizabased charities - or you can choose just one of them to donate to. Charities benefiting are: Samasound Ibiza, Care4Cats, The Ibiza Preservation Fund (IPF), Mojis Escuela Canina, Fertile Roots Foundation, The English Speaking Church, APNEEF and The Art Club of Ibiza. At the time of going to press, a total of €1,618 had been pledged for the charities so far. The Ibiza Walking Association is a non-profit organisation set up to improve the walking community on Ibiza and promote the island as a walking destination. The Long Walk starts at 9am at 'The Egg' in Sant Antoni, Saturday 31st May. There’s a 10€ participant fee, to cover organisational costs. For full details, including sponsoring online, see: Âwww.ibizawalkingassociation.com
Beaches Get Blue Flag. Twenty-three more beaches in the Baleares have been awarded “Blue Flags”. The total number of beaches given this quality award are eighty-five. In Ibiza all the beaches awarded “Blue Flags” last year get the same award this year except the beach in Es Canar. Adding to the “Blue Flag” list in Ibiza in 2014 are Cala Bassa, Port des Torrent, Arenal Gran in Portinatx, Cala Benirràs, Cala de Sant Vicent and the Port de Sant Miquel. Spain in total has 651 “Blue Flags” making it the country with the most in the Northern Hemisphere. The Postcard Man Dies. Photographer Josep Maria Subirà (Barcelona, 1930-2014) died this week. When compared to last spring, in the first three months of this year the number of dead dolphins washed ashore on our coasts has increased from 1 to 11. Experts are saying that this increase is a natural variation and has nothing to do with the rumours on the social networks that the oil exploration has started already without us knowing and is causing this phenomena. After twenty different negotiation meetings, the unions representing the coach drivers throughout the Baleares have finally agreed a “deal” over wages and working conditions. Ibiza News Racist Woman After being caught on camera making racist gestures at a Spanish second division game on Sunday between Llagostera and Racing Santander, a woman has found herself barred from the stadium for life and lost her job. Video clearly shows the Llangostera fan making monkey gestures at Mamadou Koné, an Ivory Coast player playing for Racing Santander. With the images spreading immediately via social networks, the president of Llangostera Isabel Tarragó barred the woman from ever returning to the club. A club statement issued on twitter read “This club condemns any kind of racist attitude and we want to apologize to anyone who felt hurt by this spectator’s gestures” The heads of the club have also identified the woman and reported the case to the a 1% annual rise over the next 5 years. Also there will be voluntary flexibility in the working conditions and length of working day in the winter months to compensate for the pressures of the summer. The fact that the agreement has been made for five years was welcomed as it brings stability to the industry. Teacher On Hunger Strike. Jaume Sastre, a member of the teachers consultative committee discussing the implementation of teaching in the languages of Castillian Spanish, Catalan and English in local schools, has gone on hunger strike. In response, the Minister of Education of the Balearic Government, Núria Riera, insisted that her administration had never stopped negotiating with the teachers represenatives on how to implant the system of educating youngsters in three languages and that the teachers should give it a chance.
Regional police. It did not stop there, the woman in question worked as a ticket clerk at the Barcelona Soccer Museum and following the incident they have decided to dismiss her on the grounds of a 2010 code of ethics sanctioning that any ‘discrimination based on gender, race, colour, nationality, belief, religion, political opinion, state, sexual orientation, disability or any other personal circumstance protected by law’ will not be tolerated. Koné’s response to the incident after the game was “as for that lady, it is best not to say anything, her own behaviour says it all.” Barcelona are particularly sensitive to any kind of racism due to the recent incident where a Banana was thrown at Brazilian player Dani Alves at the game against Villareal.
Jaume Sastre from Mallorca has been on hunger strike for ten days and is supported by the teachers collective. He wants to hold direct conversations with President Bauzá of the Balearic Government about teaching in three languages. Later in the week there was a silent protest by the teachers to support their stance against the Education committee proposals and some schools in Mallorca are striking for one day later this week in support of Jaume Sastre. Sex Education. The school curriculum is being changed to introduce to teenagers lessons on sexual hygiene, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and different sexual orientations. There will also be a study within the classrooms of the physical and psychological problems of adolescence as well as systems of artificial insemination and “test tube babies”.
Cancer Surgeries In Formentera. With two surgeries being held this month, for the first time cancer sufferers on Formentera can now receive medical care at the hospital on the island rather than have to travel to Ibiza. Though this much needed service is just beginning, it is expected to increase in scope and frequency over the coming months. 40,000 Apartments Rented Illegally. It is claimed by the authorities and APTUR ,the association representing holiday apartments, that there are 40,000 apartments being rented illegally to holiday makers this year throughout the Baleares. Operating outside the 2012 Balearic Tourist law, demand for these apartments appears to be on the increase with lots being commercialised on the web. The fines for this type of renting can reach to 400,000€ and it is even illegal to offer cleaning services in such properties! Last year, in Ibiza alone, 1370 properties started the process of legalisation for use as tourist accomiodation. Reportedly, of these only 177 have actually obtained the permissions needed. In another report it was revealed that the renting of villas and chalets legally licensed for tourist use is booming in Ibiza with an increase of reserves reaching 35% on last year. Old Government Building To Be Knocked Down. Classed as being a danger to the passengers waiting for buses in central Ibiza and for the pedestrians passing by, the derelict Central Government building in Ibiza Town is to be knocked down as soon as possible. The authorities will start the demolition work when they receive the permission, even if it is in the height of summer. This unusual and urgent decision has been made because seemingly the public danger represented by the building on the Avenida Isidoro Machabich outweighs the negative effects of carrying out the work during the tourist season.
30 Family Homes To Be Allowed At Benirrás. The environmental authorities have given the go ahead so that the Sant Joan Council can change their planning laws and allow thirty “family” homes to be built in the environmentally protected Benirrás area. As long as the house are only two storeys and are not used for tourist exploitation, it appears that the authorities believe their construction will not damage the beautiful environment in this area. Abandoned Vehicles Removed. Fourteen cars and a motorcycle were towed away by the authorities in the early hours of the morning after police identified them as being abandoned in the Es Pratet area of Ibiza Town. The owners will now be located and sanctioned. Four Times Over The Limit. A drunk driver tried to drive off after being involved in an accident with a motorcycle in the early hours of the morning in Ibiza Town. The police managed to apprehend the driver and
Drug Labs In Formentera. Eleven men and three women, many of South American origin, were arrested in Formentera when a police operation discovered two illegal drug making labs located on the island. Apparently selling the drugs from houses and apartments in many tourist and residential areas around the island, the gang used the labs to “cut” cocaine and to make “MDMA pills” for sale. They also dealt heroin in smaller quantities.
found he was four times over the alcohol limit. Pensioner Killed On Crossing. A eighty-four year old pensioner was killed when she was hit by a car whilst apparently crossing the Santa Gertrudis to San Miguel road. Though the woman used a zebra crossing, it is thought that the traffic lights were at red to stop pedestrians crossing when she decided to cross. The car seemingly could do nothing to avoid the woman who received serious head injuries. The emergency services tried to revive her for over an hour before she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two Hurt In Crash On Santa Eulalia Road. A local woman and a man were both injured needing hospital treatment when their cars collided on the Santa Eulalia road near the go kart track. The accident happened at 9am when the road is full of traffic commuting between Ibiza Town and Santa Eulalia.
Dutch Drug Smugglers Caught. Two young Dutch men were arrested at Denia port for trying to smuggle 54,000 extasis tablets to Ibiza. Protected in twenty-one separate plastic bags, the police located the drugs in the fuel tank of the car the men were driving as they boarded the ferry.

A warm welcome to anybody new to Ibiza. Whether you are on holiday, working or looking to live here, we hope you have a good experience of the Island and enjoy your stay. Sophia V is writing a series of articles aimed at helping new arrivals gain their bearings. Today Sophia gives a run through some outdoor options. Active in Ibiza
"Sophia V Ibiza, not only for partying, is a place for outdoor fun, being active and keeping fit. With sea view gyms, exercise parks, water sports, swimming pools, kick boxing, karate and yoga classes it’s the perfect place to maintain your health and body. Where to go There are many gyms in San Antonio, Fraile gym with its large windows boasting a stunning sea view is ideal when working out. Linea gym, Master Gym, and Rumi’s to name a view are complete with all the necessary equipment, and play excellent music as expected in Ibiza. Some gyms offer classes such as yoga, aerobics, pilates, spinning, zumba and more. There are a few exercise parks over the island, for example in Port Des Torrent, past La Sirena. Apparatus includes pedals, exercise bike, and chest press etc. It also has a beautiful view of the sea and the buildings along San Antonio’s marina. In respect of swim(Continued from page 3)

ming, if you don’t fancy the aquamarine sea of many beaches, there are community swimming pools in San Antonio, Tropical pool (a favourite amongst seasonal workers,) and in Cala de Bou, La Bahia is always busy, with surrounding restaurants and a sea view. There are also bars / hotels that allow use of the pools providing you purchase a drink / food. Jogging, roller-skating and bike riding are a regular occurrence along the beach fronts and streets. There are also kickboxing, karate and dance classes available. If you fancy a more fun workout, water sports are perfect for keeping fit. Pedal boats can be hired on the beaches, along with waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing, parasailing and scuba diving. There are also many basketball, football and tennis courts about. So, if you want to burn off the rich foods or alcohol absorbed calories, take advantage of San Antonio’s leisure’s. Lately In Ibiza As much eating out as I have been doing lately, although I hate exercising, I killed a bit of time using the apparatus at the park in Port Des Torrent. On a beautiful hot day with the gorgeous view, it makes it that bit more pleasant. I have also used the residential swimming pool, even though the water is a chilly at the moment. Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Yes, the man from the 1940's is back and goodness me how he has acclimatised to the 21st century. I suppose having Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/ Black Widow) to give you a helping hand through the tough times helps. As Captain America emerges from suspended animation, (I suppose living in Los Angeles will do that to you), he is suddenly faced with an adversary from his past. When his boss, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) gets killed by an assassin 'The Winter Soldier', it is up to Captain America to save the day. With half of the goodies being bad and a visit from his old nemesis Hydra, he has his hands full in this instalment. Great CGI, but a fairly weak plot. With all that cast at their disposal, it could have been done a lot better. • Divergent. If you have ever read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, you get a feeling of déjà vu. Many years into the future, Earth has almost been decimated and a new class system has been formed. There are now five established classes, each based on a human virtue: Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity and Cando. When each child is born, they will usually become part of their parent's faction. The heroine however, Tris (Shailene Woodley) takes an aptitude test after her chosen ceremony and is found to have all factions present. This makes her a dangerous person as she cannot be controlled. They call her a 'Divergent'. She decides to join the Dauntless faction, as adventure is what draws her interest but it comes with a price. Her task is to spend all day jumping off trains that never stop. Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslett) is the head of Erudite and is determined to bring the other factions to their knees with the help of Dauntless. Not a bad plot, but you can see the Hunger Games peeping out from underneath the bed clothes. Divergent has sold over 11 million books and has a two part finale planned (as if the first one wasn't enough.) Written by Veronica Roth, I just hope she has put a bit more pizzazz into the next two films.

Lenny Ibizarre .. "Claire B Lenny Ibizarre, real name Lennart Krarup, is a well-known and respected Ibiza musician, producer, remixer and DJ with a wide range of musical skills from ambient to chill-out to progressive house. Lenny emerged on the music scene in Ibiza in 1997 where he started work on his first album, the Ambient Collection, which was signed by Warner Music UK, and was soon keeping him busy with remix work. He became a regular DJ at Café Del Mar, spinning chillout sets as the sun went down, he DJ’d regularly on Spanish radio and appeared on numerous Ibiza chill-out compilations. By 2003, Lenny was travelling each summer on the international festival circuit; as a resident Ibiza DJ, he has held residencies at Cafe Del Mar, Pacha, Kumharas, Privilege and Amnesia. Nowadays his DJ circuit is mainly private parties all over the world. In 1997, Lenny founded his own record label, Ibizarre Records and cofounded the DJ Awards, held every year at Pacha in Ibiza where the cream of the international DJ scene is rewarded
with the coveted ‘Kryptonite Award’. Since 1997, Lenny has produced 12 albums and has become a multi-platinum selling artist. His Chilled Ibiza Compilations have sold over 1.5 million copies in the UK and the Ambient Collection reached its 7th edition in 2007. Lenny is also a much respected remix artist, favouring seasoned multi-platinum artists such as The Doors, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Jefferson Airplane, Nat King Cole and Henry Mancini. In 2011 Lenny joined forces with Max Martire and formed ‘Aristofreeks’ to reinject disco into modern house music. Within months of creating this collaboration, they were touring and producing with Giorgio Moroder, which led to further collaborations with Nile Rodgers, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. In September 2013, together with Jerry Greenberg (former President of Atlantic Records), they formed a record label, Pacific Electronic Music. Their first signing was Kathy Sledge, former lead singer of Sister Sledge. Here is his story.

"CB: When/how did you get
interested in music? I started collecting tape recordings of the Japanese Koto at 8 and then turned to the guitar. I was obsessed with practising, which easily took 8 to 12 hours of everyday. So you could say that I really didn’t do much else in my life apart from peruse my interest in music.
"CB:
Where did your big break come from?
This is a funny story. I met Phil the Manumission photographer (dressed as a nun) on the Manumission Motel terrace, and he passed my 3 first ambient collections to Mario Warner (Head of Warner Strategic Marketing) who then asked me to remix The Doors ‘Riders on the Storm’, which went platinum. Then came Chilled Ibiza, which sold double platinum. At this point Mario
called me up as said, “Let me give you an offer you can’t refuse”. Bingo! Nailed it...
"CB:
What brought you to Ibiza? I was tripping balls at The Bocaccio in Belgium every Sunday when people just kept mentioning it. So at 18, my brother Greg and me went for a 2-week insanoflexing San An West End end-all. I

think I fell in love with everything a man can possible desire. So the following year I was back working like a slave in the bars in San An. The conditions were horrendous, but I didn’t care, I was just happy to be here.
"CB: So when did you come to live here? In 1995 I was booked for a gig in Cova Santa. It was massive, 5000 people and the road to San Jose collapsed and the place got closed down. That party changed my life... again.
"CB:
Has being in Ibiza changed or influenced your musical direction? My music has always been the same regardless of any external factors, but Ibiza has allowed me to express myself more flawlessly than any other place on earth, and I am the first to recognise that I owe it all to this Island.
"CB:
When did you change your name to Lenny Ibizarre and why? Actually, that was Rob Da Bank. He wrote an article about me. Let’s just say he took a lot of liberty, it was hilarious, but he did refer to me as Lenny Ibizarre, so it stuck in the press. So when I signed with Warner music they demanded the name the press was celebrating, and so it came to be.
"CB:
You have produced 12 albums and have become a multi-platinum selling artist. How do you feel about this?
“… Jerry pulled the car over, looked us straight in the eye and said, “This is the future, lets start a label!”” As an artist I cannot care for either positive or negative opinions, even when reflected in outstanding sales. On the other hand, it’s never enough :-)
"CB: How did you move into DJing? I guess it was the first day someone asked me to play, in the winter of 96 in Ibiza town. I still don't think of myself as a DJ, but sure I spin when the party is right.
www.theibizan.com
"CB: Your partner in Aristofreeks is Max Martire. How did that collaboration come about? We were both around in Ibiza in the early 90’s and we share an almost fanatical devotion to hifidelity music production. After many exciting talks about the integrity of digital conversion we decided to join forces in the quest for the ultimate old-school disco bass groove. That’s what the Aristofreeks are all about.
"CB:
Aristofreeks formed Pacific Electronic Music (PEM) with veteran record executive Jerry Greenberg last year. How did your collaboration with Jerry come about? Max and me met Jerry when we worked on the same projects in the states. On the way back from a deal we got stuck in traffic and started sharing ideas. But when we dropped our mix of Cindy Lauper’s interpretation of ‘Disco Inferno’ Jerry pulled the car over, looked us straight in the eye and said, “This is the future, lets start a label!”
"CB:
What has Pacific Electronic Music been working on? We have our full focus collaboration as Aristofreeks with Kathy Sledge [from Sister Sledge]. Last week we went to Palm Springs to record the First Ladies of Disco: Martha Wash, Alfa Anderson, Norma Jean Wright, Linda Clifford and Luci Martin. Max wrote a song to dispute the Disco Demolition Riot 35 years ago, and the ladies performed with spectacular flair.
"CB:
You’ve also just created a recording studio, Magic Music Studios, and mastering suite. What are your plans with them? Magic Music Studios are the Area51 of the Aristofreeks and the European production wing of Pacific Electronic Music. It’s our private shangri-la to celebrate our love for music.
"CB: it sounds like you keep
yourself very busy. What do you do when you’re not working? When am I not :-) I sleep on Sundays…

For all readers of the online version of The Ibiza Sun, you must be feeling quite jealous if you are not on your way to the island for the opening parties. If you have not already reserved your seat on a plane over the next couple of weeks, the prices currently being asked may seem somewhat astronomical. Even for a long weekend you would currently be looking at paying over £400 for a return with the likes of Easyjet. Luckily a different approach has unravelled. There has been an article re-
cently on MoneySavingExpert.com where they have noticed a loophole in Easyjet’s ‘Flexifares’ system that will allow you to reduce the cost of a flight to Ibiza massively. Flexifares work in a way that allows you to change your dates within the period of a few weeks without having to pay anything extra. So you can buy cheap preseason flight prices, then swap for your chosen dates, at no extra cost. This gives you the ability to choose a flight that is considerably less than the £400+ that the opening parties will set you back.
Air Fare Loophole is Worker’s Delight If you book Easyjet Flexifares for the wrong dates on purpose and then take advantage of the Flexifare deal, you should always be able to make it work out as more cost effective for you. Just think, the money that you save could be put towards your holiday. Opening parties don’t come cheap in Ibiza for most, but by making a saving of up to hundreds of pounds, you can afford to live the Ibiza lifestyle to the maximum. There are some guidelines to follow to ensure you don’t make a mistake though. Getting cheaper flights with Easyjet can be easy, just take note of the following steps. Step 1: You must check that there are at least 20 seats are available on the date you actually want to fly. This of course is potentially a bit of a gamble. You do have to wait a short time before switching your flights, running the risk that the seats will be taken while you are waiting. The best way to check that there are still a number of seats available is to attempt to book a large amount of tickets and see if it is possible. If not, then it is likely that you will not be able to switch your flights to your pref-
ered date. Don’t go through with the purchase, but be safe in the knowledge that if there are around 20 seats left, you have a good chance of being able to change your flight date to this. The fewer seats available, the higher the risk. Step 2: You then need to book a cheaper Flexifare on your prefered alternate date. You are allowed to find and book a Flexifare ticket on the same route, no more than three weeks before or one week after you want to fly. As a bonus, these tickets even include the luxury of speedy boarding and one piece of hold luggage - but they aren't available on every route so check that your intended route is included first. Step 3: This is the tense part. You simply need to wait and hope that your prefered date is still available. This requires waiting for at least 24 hours. After that you can then switch your Flexifare tickets to the dates you would like. Take into account beforehand that you can only move each ticket by up to one week backwards or three weeks forwards. If there's space on a flight, you are able to move
your dates as many times as you like, so always keep your eye on better opportunities. Step 4: Ensure that you can switch your flights as soon as possible. As soon as the 24 hours are up, quickly to check that your prefered dates are still available. Log on to the Easyjet website and take advantage of the loophole in the Flexifares system. Once you have changed your dates you can look forward to a slightly less expensive visit to Ibiza this summer. For readers that are already here, you can potentially use this method if you are thinking of booking a trip elsewhere. There is always ways to make Ibiza cost less than face value, but this has got to be the best starting point. Ibiza workers that haven’t yet made it to the island should also consider taking advantage of a one way flight with this trick. Whilst you might still be able to find a flight that looks cheaper with Ryanair, you should take into account that with Easyjet you are afforded the luxuries of baggage and a crucial extra few inches of leg room.

To be fair to them, the decision to come to Ibiza for the summer can be so overwhelming that they could have just worked themselves into a state where logical decisions are hard to come by. ready. You can also guarantee that after only a few weeks there will be more vacancies opened up by dropouts. If for any reason you or any friends do decide to call it a day halfway into the season, you could always use the method above of taking advantage of Easyjet’s Flexifare system. As this week heads into the opening parties, there are still plenty of bargain flights to be had—we got the ones shown on Wednesday morning. Online readers should quickly divert themselves to skyscanner to check on the route that is most relevant to them. Whether your departure will be from Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham or London, you do
not want to miss out on Ibiza 2014. Strength in numbers will always help you make the most of it here. Your social time can be shared with the people you have known a long time, whilst
being enhanced by the new friends you will come to love here. Your one way ticket to Ibiza will be the best thing you do this year. What are you waiting for?
Most flight arrivals approach the airport along the East Coast passing Ibiza Town and then descending along the Playa D’en Bossa Beach, with the standard welcome from Bora Bora and skimming the rooftop of DC10 as it comes in to land. For the best view as you come in you need to sit on the right. Don’t blame us if you happen to get one which takes the other flight approach.

As we go to press, the International Music Summit (IMS) are wrapping up the first day of their 7th annual event. Hosted by Ibiza legend Pete Tong, the IMS has moved to a new home for 2014: Hard Rock Hotel. Boasting an impressive five day line-up, big players from across the dance music scene are stepping up to discuss what matters to the industry now. Seen by many as the start of the Ibiza summer season, the IMS always manages to create the perfect mix of musical debate and not to be missed parties. For the lucky few who snapped up a ticket, Wednesday evening will be spent listening to an intimate performance by Nile Rodgers, who will receive the IMS Legends Award at this years’ summit. The 2 night IMS Gran Finale at Dalt Villa is something else entirely, even in Ibiza terms. The stage is currently being erected at the UNESCO World Heritage site, ready for Thursday’s and Friday’s performances. The likes of Annie Mac, Steve Angello, Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones will all be stepping up to the decks. Here’s what Danny Whittle had to say about it earlier in the year:
"NG: The International Music Summit seems to carry
universal support. You must be quite proud of that? Sure but it wasn’t an easy start. We lost money for the first 3 years and it was made difficult to put on events around it. In Ibiza. if you stick at it, you’ll eventually become an institution and people leave you alone. It’s all about getting through those first few years. We did our first IMS in LA last year and we’re on our 6th in Ibiza. This year we’ll have 1000 delegates and we’re excited about moving to the new Hard Rock Hotel. The owners have really stepped up, in fact all of the team at Hard Rock are doing a great job for us.
Day one kicked off with the IMS Business Report, clearly highlighting that the dance music industry is a big financial player, with an estimated worth of $6.2 billion. The growth of DJ’s earnings saw incredible growth with the top 10 DJs on Forbes’ 2013 Electronic Cash Kings bringing in a combined $225 million, almost doubling the $114 million earned by those in 2012. Keynote interviews included Blaise Bellville of Boiler Room fame Mile Leonard from Parlophone Andrew Scheps, influential producer, engineer and mixer and self-made success story, Jamal Edwards of SBTV. Offering a real mix of emerging and established talent, it proved for an exciting combination to kick off the summit. Upcoming 2014 Highlights Keynote interview with Seth Troxler, interviewed by Pete Tong. At 11.25am Thursday, Seth Troxler takes his place in the hot seat. An American DJ born in Detroit, he is known for his visionary approach and endearing eccentricity. Having been voted 3rd, 2nd and 1st in the Resident Advisor Top 100 DJ poll, he has experience playing at illustrious venues across the world, including DC10 in Ibiza. Expect a few antics. Keynote interview with Paul McGuinness, interviewed by Pete Tong. Switching up the musical genres, Paul McGuiness also gets the Pete Tong treatment. As the former manager of U2, he was a driving force behind them from the start, and we all know how that ended. Leaving U2 in 2013, he is now the manager of PJ Harvey and The Rapture, demonstrating his versatility and flair for sniffing out success. See how this plays out at 12.35pm on Wednesday. Fly The Flag, Baleari In the first of series of special features, we talk to some of the leading British Business leaders who have made their Ibiza story a success. Though all retain something of their national identity in the businesses they run, all talk of integration and understanding as the key to success in this increasingly not so foreign land. Over coming weeks we will look at the Beach Clubs, Hotels, Promoters and with Sankeys well established and Gatecrasher joining the party, even the once closed world of the Nightclub is open for business. We are flying the flag, but the red white and blue has definite shades of red and yellow intertwined.

The Plastik Story
"Colin Butts At the start of the noughties, San Antonio was suffering from the legacy of the notorious Ibiza Uncovered documentary. Bar culture – certainly in the West End – was about getting holidaymakers drunk, as quickly and cheaply as possible. Binge culture devotees stayed in San Antonio and ventured no further than the neon canyon of Calle Santa Ines; clubbers stayed in San Antonio for cheap accommodation and other than the sunset strip, ventured anywhere but San Antonio. Then along came Plastik. Strictly speaking, then along came Plastic Fantastic, the celebrated London record shop. It opened a branch in San An’s West End in 2000 and in 2002, a professional recording studio was put in the back of the shop. A funky little bar was added, initially to service those using the studio but it wasn’t long before the cooler, in-theknow crowd started coming in for a drink and to listen to the latest tunes. Within three years, as vinyl and CD sales plummeted, the bar had taken over the whole space and had become Plastik, a full-on club/bar hybrid. The policy of great music, no football shirts and pricing drinks to lubricate the night rather than drown it attracted a quality crowd and made other San Antonio bar owners realise that not all young Brits came on holiday with the sole objective of puking in the gutter and that a bar could be successful simply by improving standards. Despite several bars following suit, the perception of the West End never really changed, so for Plastik to develop in the way they wanted,
The Original Plastik Way Back When
they made the decision in 2007 to move to their present location by the egg roundabout. Perhaps it was no coincidence that the following year, Ibiza Rocks opened their hotel and Pete Tong’s Wonderland moved to San Antonio superclub, Eden. Certainly, Plastik was hugely instrumental in changing the perception of San Antonio and helped pave the way for larger brands to have the confidence that a market existed there for them. Since then, Plastik has gone from strength to strength, popular with visiting celebs and renown for its annual crop of sexy barmaids, cool crowd and cutting edge music. The men behind Plastik are owners Andy Matthews and Colin Butts. Both have a long Ibiza association. Andy first worked here in 1997 when an injury curtailed a promising football career. He became something of a PR legend in the West End working for Koppas on what was then the frenetic bottom of the West End hill. He now has two baby sons, Jude and Rico, by girlfriend Zeana who was a barmaid at the original venue and has been by his side contributing to the bar’s success pretty much since the beginning. Colin worked briefly as a rep here in the late 80s, which led to him writing the best selling novel/ film/TV series, Is Harry on the Boat? and embarking on a parallel career as a bestselling author and scriptwriter, working with Shameless creator Paul Abbott and more recently, writing prison feature, Screwed. Their shared aim is the same now as it was when they first opened – to continue changing the perception of San Antonio. “I was flying from the UK a few weeks ago,” says Colin, “and a woman was chatting about the island to the person next to her and condescendingly said that she’d never go to San Antonio. I couldn’t help myself. I asked her why then had to put her straight.” “And every year I hear the same thing, dozens and dozens of times,” adds Andy, “people saying they never realised how good San Antonio actually is. All we have to do is get them here.”

you have a ‘sleeping Ibicenco’ amongst your Directors/Owners to succeed in business. We used to think this but times have changed and the most important thing is to have local professionals (e.g. accountant, lawyer) with the right connections. Having said that, it is also very important to be aware of how things work here and not to do anything that could be considered provocative. Basically, it’s about communicating and listening. "What of the immediate future? Are you optimistic? Any examples or reasons to feel 2014 will be a good or bad season? Flights are up for 2014 but are these longweekenders with their agendas already planned e.g. Blue Marlin, Ushuaia etc.? And are they staying in San Antonio? If not, then chances are that other than for the sunset they won’t come here. This is why it’s SO important that the perception of San An changes, that we have more quality accommodation and that some latitude is given to allow businesses to compete with Bossa. It is getting better so at the moment, cautiously optimistic.

Ibiza has changed dramatically and now is far more pro fessional than before. This is largely a good thing but we must retain the spirit and character of the island and the corporate money side does have its dangers. Ibiza ha always been a great vehicle to amplify ideas, but ulti mately a huge percentage of the creativity has been driven by the foreigners. The ibicencos talent has been in welcoming and accepting outsiders. As time goes by the realization that professional people must run globa venues has started to kick in. neurs are taking control of venues because they are good at what they do. Some who fail to appreciate the fabric of the island will fail, others will prosper. "Must you have a ‘sleeping Ibicenco’ amongst your Directors/Owners to succeed in business. Not any more! Ultimately it is essential that you understand and the island and respect the culture, but for many years now we have fought our own battles and we are no longer dependent on our local partners. A good ibicenco partner is a great idea, but if you can appreciate the way the island works it is not a necessity. "How long have you been in business in Ibiza? What changes have you experienced – good or bad – in that time? 20 years! Laws have become more relevant and more enforced. This has made life as a non local easier. I still would like to see the island as a whole wake up to the reality that they are guardians of brand ibiza and this is a huge brand. This brand could be better managed and I hope in time it will be. "Do you consider your business directly suffers, or is inconvenienced in any way, by Britain’s position outside the Eurozone. Not really. Ibiza will live and die by its energy. Ibiza's danger is that it needs to keep its uniqueness. The plasticisation and globalisation of ibiza are real dangers. The island needs to retain its unique charm. "What of the immediate future? Are you optimistic? Any examples or reasons to feel 2014 will be a good or bad season? I am optimistic. I believe the real battle is not about success or failure it is about equilibrium. The island needs more authentic true ibiza experiences to balance out the arrival of the pseudo cool generic Vip global money culture. "The Crisis … is it over? YES
Position: Director "10 years ago there were no major Ibiza venues owned by British entrepreneurs, but we now have several. To what do you attribute this change? The local island residents opening the doors to allow British and European businesses to develop themselves in Ibiza. "Must you have a ‘sleeping Ibicenco’ amongst your Directors/Owners to succeed in business. From my experience this is not a necessity however it’s always nice to have friends in the local community. "How long have you been in business in Ibiza? What changes have you experienced – good or bad – in that time? I have been on the Island 6 years now and I think the main change is the development and expansion of the luxury segment to the islands tourism. Now the competition in this area is very strong but the Island has so many varied tourists this makes for a great balance to the island and all that it offers. "Do you consider your business directly suffers, or is inconvenienced in any way, by Britain’s position outside the Eurozone. Not particularly, you notice a slight flocculation in spending from British tourists depending on the exchange rate at any given time but over the course of the season it generally evens itself out. "What of the immediate future? Are you optimistic? Any examples or reasons to feel 2014 will be a good or bad season? I am always optimistic for the season but this year I am extremely excited given the high increase in advance bookings at Ocean Beach and also the excitement of the World Cup for Linekers Bar. "The Crisis … is it over? Yes (Hesitantly)

Getting Run Over in Santa Eulalia Dear sir, may I through your paper say the transformation in Sta Eulalia is fantastic, i.e. the new car park, the seafront, the fountains up to the town hall make it a pleasure to walk around, as a tourist who as visited this area for the last 14yrs it makes it so pleasing to not worry about traffic? Until you get around the town hall part, were traffic seems to take short cuts past the town hall and up towards the car park area and out of town. Unfortunately most of us brits think a paved area is a precinct and use as such if traffic is to use this area put signs to show the fact or make it certain times for traffic. For the younger ones it might be just that once when one runs out not seeing the car and who knows even us older ones may not be so quick? so hoping through you paper which I read when I'm on the island about 3-4 times a year, I can just say take care on this area and mind the cars unless something is done before the season gets in full swing. Yours faithfully Fred Pilbeam Hastings. UK Goodbye Dave From Murphy’s I have often written to you and have had several letters published. I would really appreciate it if you could for the last time from me print my comments below as I can no longer come to Ibiza due to illness and I'd like to pay tribute to Dave Banks from Murphy's, who is leaving Murphy's for good in about 2 weeks. As Dave is so well known to many visitors and locals in Ibiza for over twenty years I also wondered if maybe he could be considered to feature in your new Ibizan interview? Title: End of an Era. June 15th is the very last time Dave Banks will be playing in Murphy's with The Murphy Brothers for anyone that has been to Murphy's in D'en Bossa you will know devastating this news is. Many of our family and friends have been visiting Murphy's during our holidays for nearly 20 years, 2 or 3 times every year and this is a great loss to us all. Its not just a bar but like home from home as the welcome you get in Murphy's is second to none! As you walk down the stairs into Murphy's its like walking into your front room for a private party, the hospitality Dave and his team provides is outstanding. The bar has always been so popular by so many nationalities around the world with
www.theibizan.com
regular customers coming back year after year from Germany, England, Italy, Ireland, Scotland Switzerland, Holland to name a few, it has truly been an international venue. The Live music and entertainment is unbeatable and can never be replaced by a DJ, not even the very best!. Live music isn't easy to find in Ibiza, its such a shame it has to end. There have been many 'brothers' in the Murphy line-up with Dave, and of course our 'piano man' Bobby, who was there for around 17 years, Also Martin the fiddler, Matt Warren, Simon Cuell, Adian, Martin, Phil and Alex, Wayne, Fran, Kevin, there are many ! Not forgetting Dave’s bar staff who made us so welcome, Ramon, Tanja, Yvonne, and Simon many thanks for being so great! So I'd like to pay tribute and on behalf of all the millions that have enjoyed Dave and the Murphy brothers over the years we'd like to say a massive thank you for many magical times in Murphy's Bar! This will be an end of an era, and a very hard act to follow !! Slainte!! Sally, Doug, family and friends (UK). I've attached a couple of photos just in case you could include one? If these are not good enough quality I have many more. Thank you, kind regards, Sally.
"Thanks for your letter Sally. I spent my for-
mative Ibiza years in Playa D’en Bossa, and so know Dave and the very special venue he has at Murphys. I’ve never seen the man without a huge smile on his face, and he put plenty on those of his customers—so many returning year after year. I have known Murphy’s at it’s best, and celebrated an England world cup victory or two there. I have known it as ‘a local’ with Luis, Marcello and the Bora Bora crew at the end of their shift. Sadly I have also known it in tragedy—my wife playing a very courageous part in the attempted but unsuccessful resuscitation of a holidaymaker who lost his life there a few years ago. Nothing lasts forever, but it will take a special manager to fill Dave’s shoes (and Tanja of course—the real brains behind the outfit.) I’m not sure how this picture will print—but I’ve given it my best in Photoshop and hope it comes out OK.

"The 2 Old Rockers Family Beach Fun Day. The place to be this coming Sunday, 25th May, is the beach in Cala Llonga where the Viva Cala Llonga Team, in conjunction with the Asociación de Vecinos, are holding a Children’s Beach Games Day. Starting at 11am there’ll be Foam Fun with Albert the Clown, a Sandcastle Competition, which gives the grownups chance to join in, a Bouncy Castle and lots of other games and entertainments. Why not make a day of it and either bring a picnic or sample some of the wide range of food and drinks available in the villages bars and restaurants. The weather forecast is good (hopefully) so you’re more than welcome to join in what is going to be a real family fun day out. Car Parking Discount. The underground car park in Sta Eulalia has re-introduced the Residents car parking discount. When we used it last week our fee should have been 1,55€ but with discount we only paid 50 cents, brilliant. Plus of course when we returned to it our car was nice and cool. On the subject of Sta Eulalia the central Paseo refurbishment is now completed. We were a little apprehensive as how it would turn out but we have to admit that it does look rather smart with extra seating outside some cafes making a much pleasanter situation for visitors, the business owners and market stall holders. At night the fountain and water canals that run down to the bottom of the Paseo are illuminated in varying colours making quite a spectacular show. Cinema. Once again there isn’t an English language film showing at Teatro España Sta Eulalia this week. On 28th, 30th, 31st May and 1st June they are showing Night Train to Lisbon (2013) 111 mins Raimund Gregorius, a Swiss Professor, abandons his lectures and buttoned-down life to embark on a thrilling adventure that will take him on a journey to the very heart of himself.
Stars: Jeremy Irons, Mélanie Laurent, Jack Huston. Come On You Brewers! We don’t suppose that Jezza will mention it so we will. Burton Albion the football team from our town of birth, Burton on Trent, won a thrilling match to beat “Soufend” United 3-2 on aggregate and now face Fleetwood Town in the Division 2 play offs final at Wembley Stadium on Monday 26th May. We watched the game at Bar Mariposa whilst enjoying one of their House Salads. There are salads and there are salads and theirs is a salad to remember.
"It
looked too good for a black and white page—so you can see it in the food & drink section. Up The Rams! The team we supported when living in the UK, Derby County, are also playing at Wembley next Saturday 24th May, facing Queens Park Rangers in the Championship play offs, so it could be a very joyous, or very disastrous few days for us. “Snappy Birthday”. Alan Douglas celebrated his 75th Birthday last Sunday. Alan is a keen photographer and has over the years allowed us to “borrow” some of his pictures for publication in The Ibiza Sun. We hope you enjoyed your day Alan. Letter from Juan
"Juan I now have some idea what the “two old rockers” have been putting themselves through over the past few years just to bring you an interesting and informative column each week. Last week I was out well past midnight on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights and then had to get up at 5.15am on Saturday! They have had over the years a much more gruelling schedule and I for one don’t know how they have survived for so long! Anyway back in the real world, you may remember that I was having trouble with my Wi-Fi, well it was fixed a couple of weeks ago

Community – it turned out to be the power cable that was broken not the Router- however every other day since then my Wi-Fi seems to go down for a few hours so if you want to make sure of contacting me the phone is probably the most reliable method at the moment.. If this carries on much longer I may have to take everyone’s advice and ditch my supplier, Telefonica. The other bane in my life at the moment is the traffic in Sant Josep. It is an absolute disaster, cars are parked all over the place in every conceivable orifice you can imagine or to be more polite I should use an expression that my Scots friends use, “in every nook and cranny”. The reason for this shambles Sant Josep has joined the 21st century and has now got a sizeable National supermarket in its midst – Hiper Centro. Whether they had to ask the Ayuntamiento permission for the change I don’t know but something needs to be done about parking in town before an accident happens. Apart from parking all over the place, for those that don’t know the town, directly outside the supermarket there is this large deep hollow where the occasional car used to park except when there was a fiesta or a funereal then it was full. However now it is full every day of every hour and unfortu-
nately the way down is very steep and slippery and to get your car out and on to the main road is a nightmare and a very dangerous one at that. Another case of a disaster waiting to happen or I should say several disasters waiting to happen with people falling down the slope and cars crashing into each other. I expect to hear an increase in the wails of the ambulances as they rush the next casualty off to hospital. I wonder if the dogs in the valley that always join in a wailing contest with the sirens will get so fed up with hearing them that they might actually stop trying to compete! As I have my gloom and doom pen in my hand I should like to suggest that you do not throw your cigarettes or bottles out of your car as the risk of fire this year, after the lack of rain, must be very great. Also as it is now warmer in the mornings you can do your bit for the environment and help maintain the water levels by turning off your shower when you are soaping up and turning it back on the wash yourself off and don’t run the water all the time you are brushing your teeth just at the start and the finish. Then you can walk out of your dwelling with a smile on your face knowing that you have at least made a small contribution to the pending water crisis. Have an environmentally
good week, yours Juan. View From The Pew
"Bob the ex-Vicar There being no locum on Ibiza this week, I was asked to do the View from the Pew again even though I am in the UK. I should point out that as the man in the dog-collar, I am not actually in the pew, and so it is perhaps more like View of the Pew! But on the other hand, it is also important to point out that just because I wear a dog collar on Sundays doesn’t mean that I am essentially any different to anybody else sitting in the pew on Sunday! Yesterday I had the great opportunity of being able to walk up the Old Man of Coniston in the Lake District with an old University friend and his wife. You couldn’t really have had a better day for it with the clear blue skies and warm sunshine, although there was a bit of a chilly wind. However it being such a beautiful Saturday morning meant that there were a lot of people about. When my friend told me where he was taking me for the day, I had envisaged a nice quiet walk up a mountain where there would be few people. Maybe in Ibiza, but not here! Driving up to the car park above Coniston we were in a queue of traffic. At the car
park, it already seemed full at 10:45 in the morning but we managed to squeeze in. On the various trails up the mountain, we could already see loads of people walking together, even some tiny little specks already way up on the tops. All the way up we were either following or being followed by packs of people. It was only when we had got to the top and started on down and found a small grassy spot out of sight of the main trail for a picnic that we were actually on our own. We were sitting right above the carpark, and from up there I wondered why I had thought it so crowded. Similarly the trails that were winding up the mountain seemed far less busy as well. It was a totally different perspective! From up there it must be somewhat like a God’s-eye view. It reminded me how important it is to get above our daily problems, alongside God and see things from his perspective. He invites us to do this He encourages us to do this in fact He commands us to do it in the 4th of the Ten Commandments because He knows how much we need this time with Him in our lives. At the beginning of a busy summer, it is so important to remember to take the time that God wants us to have to sit next to Him and see the problems and hassles of life from His perspective. You might not be able to do it in Church depending on your work schedule, although many churches are open every day for quiet thought and prayer. Also you might like to go up Sa Talaia on Ascension Day (Thursday May 29th at sunrise – the church has a short service there followed by breakfast) where you can get a God-perspective of life on Ibiza, get it all into proportion, and be re-fuelled for the busyness of life back down on the island. God bless you all this summer, Bob the ex-Vicar and Clare.
It’s Good to Talk
"Kate Stillman Dear Kate I think you had a letter similar to
this one before and I think I have quite a common problem but still was wondering if you could help – sorry if you have to repeat yourself. I am a smoker of weed, over the winter I have a joint every evening to relax and mark the end of the day, I really enjoy it and to be honest don’t want to stop it. The problem is that I always get my smoking (and infrequent use of other drugs) under good control during the winter, partly because funds are lacking and I have to ration myself but mainly because it is quiet and the temptations do not present them selves as often as they do in the winter. As I said before I enjoy my evening joint and would like to continue to do so but this year more then others I really want to just do that and I am so anxious about slipping into old patterns that I’m not sure quite what to do. Thank you, HG Dear HG Thank you for your e mail and congratulations on getting your smoking to a more manageable level over the winter. You are right I did have a similar letter a while ago but its great that you have written in as it highlights an issue that is very common especially here where there is such a huge difference between how we all socialise and operate in the winter compared to the summer. The winter here often gives people a chance to relax, detox and generally take care of them selves after what is often an excessive summer with little sleep! It seems as if you have a really good idea of your patterns and how you respond in certain situations, so I wonder if knowing this about yourself actually gives you a head start in being able to prepare for those situations that you might find difficult? They are unlikely to take you by surprise and as you now know what your triggers are it gives you an opportunity to either avoid them or if that is not possible then make a decision about how you want to handle them in advance so you are not caught in a situation where you revert to old habits because you don’t have enough time to make a more informed choice. You seem determined to stick to your winter routine and I think that making that explicit choice (Continued on page 17)

Gardener’s Corner
"John Hitchin Jonas Salk the man who invented the vaccine for polio once said if all the insects died on planet earth then all other forms of life would cease to exist within 50 years but if all humans died all other forms of life would start to flourish. This may come as a surprise to many people especially those who are bothered by insects of all shapes and sizes but insects play an important part in the growing of food. The bee is a great pollinator which is responsible for pollinating about 70% of crops in The USA and Europe and this is an insect which is in grave danger of disappearing from the planet altogether due to colony collapse. Much has been written in the worlds press about this and the EU has banned a form of pesticides known as neo nicontinoids whilst more research has is carried out to see what effect they have on bees. There are other things such as Wi-Fi which may have an effect as well. Organic gardeners know that insects eat each other so they introduce insects such as ladybirds that will eat greenfly. There have been articles in this in the past column that have covered this subject Some organic farmers will grow hedgerow between fields of about two meters wide that will encourage insect life to develop this in turn will attract birds that eat some of the harmful insects. The Chinese government ordered a four pest

early rather than disappoint others. A retreat or spa will do you the world of good, if only to replenish the energy you've expended in the past few weeks.
CAPRICORN - Three of Cups Pharell Williams 'HAPPY' is the theme tune to this card! Long held wishes come closer to being a reality. You have a task this week; that is to shine some light on difficult situations and be that shoulder to cry on. For you; 'Ask and it is Given' applies now. You’ve come a long way emotionally so have earned it. AQUARIUS – The Chariot You’re where you’re meant to be in life; all is unfolding beautifully just by going with the flow. The road you're travelling is manifesting everything you need. New people and experiences are highlighted with travel opportunities for some. You're on a journey where your confidence isn’t attached to your ego; understanding that helps you to honour yourself and honour others. PISCES - Seven of Cups Decorate your home, get yourself a makeover, shop 'til you drop. You get the picture? The sensible part of you wonders how you’ll find the funds to do so. Well, the secret to having wealth is not to hoard it but circulate it in your life; therefore it stands to reason that it comes back to you from others.

"Kevin Russel HPV The Human Papilloma virus has been mentioned in this column before, as it is responsible for a variety of illnesses from harmless warts to cancer. Human Papilloma virus or HPV has over 120 types that affect certain skin cells and mucous membranes in people. Most infections caused by the HPV are not serious and even go unnoticed, some form cutaneous or genital warts called

campaign between 1958 and 1962 to kill rats, mosquitoes, flies and sparrows. When sparrows were killed of it allowed locust to breed without their natural predators which in turn meant thousands of tons of crops were eaten by them contributing to the great famine in which 20 million people died. The Chinese government learnt the hard way about the balance of nature. Anybody who wants to attract insects into their garden can build what is known as an insect hotel which is a structure that is built from materials that will attract insects. One off the best ways to do this is to use a stack of pallets 5-6 high and build them layer by layer. They can be filled with plastic tubes that can be stuffed with bamboo that will attract solitary bees if the tubes are facing the sun. Wooden logs with some holes drilled them, twigs and
straw is another material that will attract insects. Gaps can be filled with leaves, corrugated paper and plastic bottles with the ends cut of filled with rolled up paper or straw. These should be placed facing downwards so the insides don’t get wet. Placing terracotta pots, roof tiles or bricks by the north side of the stack will encourage frogs to nest in the cool damp conditions. Frogs eat mosquito lava so are a great addition to any garden in Ibiza. The top pallet can have pots placed in them that can be used to grow flowers that will attract insects to visit the stack. Building an insect hotel is a great way for children to learn about nature and the ecology and appreciate how important insects are for the environment.
benign papillomas. The most serious infections can cause vaginal, anal, cervical cancers as well as cancer of the oropharynx. HPV is the most commonly transmitted sexual disease and about fourty types can affect the genital regions. It is spread through direct contact frequently during sexual intercourse. In fact because it is a very common virus most people who are sexually active will be infected at some point in their life. In many cases the person won’t know because there are no initial symptoms and the body’s own immune system is able to get rid of the infection without it causing any problems. It can also lay dormant many years before signs and symptoms appear. The types that cause an increase in the cancer risk are called high risk HPVs, specifically HPV16 and HPV18. These strains can cause abnormal changes in cells in the mucosa that can then develop into cancers. As it is spread by contact then the best method of prevention is by using a barrier such as a condom. However condoms don’t cover all of the skin so are not 100% effective. Also this won’t prevent cross infection by the oro-genital route. Actor Michael Douglas recently openly discussed his experiences of throat cancer which he attributes to HPV and oral-
sex transmission. HPV16 is known to be one of the causes of throat cancer, other high risk factors are smoking and alcohol, both of which he also admits to in abundance. Roughly 25% of head and neck cancers occur in people who have never smoked and HPV is thought to be responsible for many in this group of people. There is at present no way of detecting HPV in the mouth unless there is an obvious sign such as a growth, but vaccines given to prevent HPV related cervical cancers should reduce the amount of head and neck cancer cases. Worldwide there is an estimated 350,000 cases of head and neck cancers annually, of which only about 4000 cases are attributed to HPV (between 1 and 2%). The same group, HPV-mediated throat cancer, has more than trebled in the USA in the last 15 years, which has been mainly attributed to oral sex. At present the vaccines are given only to girls, preferably before they become sexually active because the chances are that they have not yet been exposed to HPV. If you have any health related issue that you would like discussed please get in touch via The Ibiza Sun or at the email below. kevin1370@yahoo.com

Modball is Coming . . .'Drive all day . . . Party all night'
"Tom Berry With it's 'Drive all day . . . Party all night' ethos, what better place for the Modball Europe Rally 2014 to end its pan-European run than Ibiza. Modball is one of the biggest international road rally events, now in its eighth year, it promises to bring a real treat for motoring and partying
enthusiasts to Ibiza. Modball was created in 2007 by Joseph Bourgerie, a young entrepreneur from the UK, with a well suited business background that covers events, music and television production. He started the Modball rally as he had swapped the internet domain name for his Playstation 2 with a work colleague. Now the Modball is represented globally holding road rally events in Australia, Amer-
ica and Europe. Modball attracts a wide variety of competitors from all over the world ranging from Actors, Musicians and Models to professional racing drivers. Its well known for its glamorous party’s that have previously included included Will.I.Am Djing in Vegas and paint parties in Luxembourg. Described by Lucy Pinder as ‘The best 7 days of my life’, we are sure 2014 Modball will be
no exception. This year Modball starts in London on the 20th June at Pall Mall's Waterloo Place, going through Paris, Lyon, Barcelona, Valencia, Denia and finally finishing in Ibiza on the 26th June. A route many of us may be familiar with. Along the way special events are planned, one being a lap of the Ricardo Tormo race track in Valencia on the 24th June and also public displays of the competitor cars, no doubt they will find time for a little bit of partying along the way. The final finishing party is scheduled to take place at The Ocean Beach Club in San Antonio. The organisers have been recently working hard meeting with local representatives from the Islands Authorities to plan the necessary road closures and logistics for when the race comes to Ibiza. We are reliably informed all has been happily agreed and arranged with the
Chief of Police to ensure public safety. Car enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that so far entrants includes a Morgan 3 Wheeler, a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Hennessey Venom GT, to name just a few of the exotic cars that will be coming to Ibiza. It is sure to be one of the seasons not to be missed events. For more information on the event and up to date race news please visit Âwww.modball.com. Meanwhile we hope to see you at the following motor-sport events taking place in Ibiza soon: May 31st to 1st June - VIII Rallye Sant Josep June 6th to 11th - Gumball 3000 Rally Miami to Ibiza June 20th to 26th - Modball Rally London to Ibiza

be a stunner! On to Tennis, and although Our Andy Murray lost against Rafael Nadal in the Rome Open, even with a set start, apparently he feels he is on song for the upcoming French Open so we'll see! In the Final it was a classic, between World No 1 Rafa and No 2 Djokovic with the latter coming through to upset the form book and win in 3 sets. Cycling now, and congrats, once again, to Sir Bradley Wiggins as he won the Tour of California by a 30 second margin but congrats too to Brit Mark Cavendish who won the final sprint finish, as he is wont to do! Now, as my regular reader(s) know, I have passed over Motor Racing to Rhian because it's her passion, but I had to have a chuckle when I heard that Our Lewis Hamilton, F1 championship leader and used to driving at 180 mph+, turned over a Robin Reliant by mistake in a charity event over the weekend. Seems he's a master of 4 wheels but not as good as Rodders in a 3 wheeler! On to Footie, and although World Cup mania is beginning to kick in, there were a few important matches taking place over the weekend in Europe. Firstly, in England, at
last, at last, a trophy for Arsenal as they won the FA Cup Final, beating Hull City 3-2 after extra time. However, even then, Mnsr Wenger didn't raise a smile, even though his relief was tangible, as he held aloft the Cup, the only trophy his team have won in the last nine long seasons. You have to feel for the Tigers though, as they were 2-0 up within 6 minutes and had the perfect opportunity to kill the match with a third goal before the Gunners came back to be 2-2 at full time. Even then, Hull had opportunities but couldn't quite make them count. So, the Emirates can clear out their trophy cabinet of moths and spiders webs and at last put in some silverware – 'bout time too! North of the Border, it was the Scottish Cup Final and new holders here as well, as St Johnstone beat Dundee Utd 2-0 at Celtic Park, to claim their first Cup in their 130 year history. In Germany, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, humiliated by Real Madrid in the Champions League Semis, took on runners up Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup Final and completed the Double as they won 2-0 to at least give Pep something to cheer! And what a finish to La Liga in Spain, where leaders Atlético Madrid needing at least a draw to win the league, played their final league match against Barcelona, at the Camp Nou, themselves needing a win to secure the title. It didn't look too good for Atlético as they went 1-0 down in the first half as well as losing two of their main stars

through injury but whatever manager Simeone said at halftime obviously worked, as a second half header from a corner proved decisive for the Madrillenos and they ended up 1-1, to take the title by 3 points. So, Part 1 of Atlético's dream double completed as they now face city opponents Real in the Champions League Final on Saturday evening in Lisbon. As I mentioned last week, should be a cracker, altho' the Rojiblancos could well be without striker Diego Costa (Chelsea-bound I hear!) through injury. Certainly one to watch, methinks, so that's Saturday's TV sorted – first both rugby finals in Cardiff then straight on to the footie so I had better warn “´er indoors who must be obeyed!” who I am sure

Sport won't be best pleased but then, like most women, she does love Wilko! Also, on the footie front, the month's worst kept secret was outed as Manchester Utd confirmed their appointment of Dutchman and current Holland manager Louis van Gaal as their manager, taking effect immediately after the World Cup, with United legend Ryan Giggs being appointed as his assistant. Works well for Giggsy, now retired from all football, as no doubt he will learn lots from the Dutch meister with a view to taking the reigns when LvG decides he's had enough (probably next season!) So, lots to look forward to for the English media next season, as I would love to be a fly on the
wall when he tackles Jose and Mnsr Wenger when they go head to head at their press conferences! Talking managers, good luck to both Steve McLaren and Our 'Arry Redknapp and their respective clubs, Derby County and QPR, as they go head to head at the w/end at Wembley in the Championship Final Play Off for the right to join the elite in the Premier League and that massive incentive of some ₤30 million prize. Am running outta time and space, so sorry, guys an' gals, will have to postpone my muchanticipated (I understand!) Endof-Season Awards until next week so until then, have a good 'un and enjoy our much needed rain!

Friends and colleagues have been paying tribute to threetime Formula One world champion Sir Jack Brabham who has died at the age of 88. Brabham, who claimed the drivers’ title in 1959, ’60 and ’66 - and who remains the only man to have won a championship in a car bearing his own name - passed away peacefully
at his home in Australia on Monday morning. His first two titles in a CooperClimax marked the end for front-engined Formula One cars, while his third made him the only driver in history to win a world championship in a car of his own manufacture, the Brabham BT19 - a feat unlikely to be repeated.
Hi there, Sports fans, and another week of scintillating and exciting sports action to report on! So, straight in and no beating about the bush this week. Let's start, for a change, with Rugby Union, and in the English Premiership, t'was the Semifinals of the play-offs and both matches were great adverts for the English game. Firstly, Northampton took on
perennial winners Leicester at Franklin Gardens and what a match, with the Saints squeezing through 21-20 in a typically thunderous local derby, to reach the Final at Twickers in a fortnight's time. There they will meet the League winners Saracens, who mastered Harlequins 31-17, although it wasn't until the second half, with Sarries down by 6 points and reduced to 13 players, that the eventual winners came through with England wing Chris Ashton to the fore. However, both teams have pressing engagements in Europe
this weekend before they play each other, as Northampton take on Bath in the Final of the Amlin Cup and Saracens take on Toulon in the Final of the Heineken Cup, both Finals being played in Cardiff. The latter should be a real classic, the best of England agin the best of France, with a shoot-out between old and new England flyhalves, legend Jonny Wilkinson, playing in his final match before retirement, and current England star Owen Farrell. Don't miss it on TV, because, on paper at least, it should (Continued on page 23)
