Robin Hood Merry Den in his
Enric Duran is known as the Robin Hood of the banks. He took out loans of half a million euros with no intention of ever paying them back. Instead, he gave the money to projects that created and promoted alternatives to capitalism. After 14 months in hiding, Duran is unapologetic even though his activities could land him in jail. Speaking to the Guardian this week via Skype from he secret location, he remained unrepentant. "I'm proud of this action. It generated a movement that allowed us to push forward with the construction of alternatives. And it allowed us to
build a powerful network that groups together these initiatives." From 2006 to 2008, Duran took out 68 commercial and personal loans from 39 banks in Spain. "I saw that on one side, these social movements were building alternatives but that they lacked resources and communication capacities," he said. "Meanwhile, our reliance on perpetual growth was creating a system that created money out of nothing." The loans he swindled from banks were his way of regulating and denouncing this situation. He started
slowly. "I filled out a few credit applications with my real details. They denied me, but I just wanted to get a feel for what they were asking for." From there, the former table tennis coach began to weave an intricate web of accounts, payments and transfers. "I was learning constantly." By the summer of 2007, he had discovered how to make the system work, applying for loans under the name of a false television production company. "Then I managed to get a lot." €492,000 to be ex(Continúa en la página 2)

Frankie Fund Elton John has established the Frankie Knuckles Fund to support HIV information, testing and treatment. Following the tragic death of the man known to millions as the "Godfather of House Music," on March 31st, 2014, the Elton John AIDS Foundation has been chosen to establish a Fund in Knuckles' memory receiving donations for the charity's work with men at high risk of HIV in Africa as well as African communities in the UK, and African American communities in the U.S.A. "Frankie was such a lovely man and a great talent," commented EJAF Founder Sir Elton John, "and his legacy provides a powerful voice to reach out to people, particularly men of colour, about their essential role in helping to create an AIDS-free future." Two memorial services have been held on April 21 in Chicago and April 22 in New York City. A string of tribute events are being organized throughout 2014. Meanwhile American President Barack Obama has sent a personal letter of condolence to Frankie's family and friends in Chicago...
act. Duran was arrested in Spain in 2009, on charges brought against him by six of the 39 banks that had lent him money. He spent two months in prison before being bailed for €50,000bail. In February last year, facing up to eight years in prison, he decided to flee rather than stand trial. "I don't see legitimacy in a judicial system based on authority, because I don't recognise its authority," he said. Duran said that at the time his actions were not understood, but though it might carry more favour now, the anti-capitalist movement had grown so far that it was no longer needed. “The anti-capitalist movement has grown from a fringe movement to one supported by thousands of Spaniards” he said, “evidenced by the 70 or so social currencies in use across the country and widely supported movements such as the indignados.” Easter Sports Tourists. Though it was reported that about only 50% of the number of hotels which opened last Easter opened this year, the various sports events held over the weekend attracted a major influx of visitors to the island. The “Ruta de Sal” yacht race attracted around 1000 visitors as 160 yachts, including 30 from other countries, raced either from Denia or Barcelona to Ibiza. Local yacht “Cafe del Mar” won the race for the second year running. Apart from yacht racing, there was also a Mountain bike event staged in the Sant Josep area of the island which attracted lots of competitors and their families and friends from all over Spain and Europe. Realising the potential of these “Sport” Tourists, last Friday, thirteen restaurants, in conjunction with the town hall in San Antonio, put on a special “Ruta de las Tapas” offering mini snacks at special prices as part of a promotion called “Gastronomic Spring”. Whilst this was a great taster for the visitors, all of us can benefit from this initiative as the restaurants will put on special menus using local products, and costing only 14€, each weekend until the 1st June. Baleares Wants Oil Law Change. Unanimous support for a PSOE Socialist opposition motion was reached by all the politicians in the Balearic Parliament last week. The motion urged the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, to change the 1998 law on searching for and extracting hydrocarbon fuels. If passed in Madrid, the Balearic Government proposals would mean that the search
for and extraction of hydrocarbon fuels could not be carried out in environmentally protected areas or in tourist areas of the Spanish territory and it's coastal waters. IT is seen as important for the local authorities to pressurise the Central Government to modify this national law because, apparently only about a year ago the same law was amended to allow such situations as the present planned search for hydrocarbons around our island. The reason for the last change was sited as to guarantee the supplies of electrical energy in Spain. Local Institute Has To Leave. After 39 years of renting premises owned by the church in Ibiza town, the local Institute of “Eivissenc” studies has to leave. Thinking they were good tenants, the institute was surprised to be told they had to leave after such a long time, even more so because the news came by official bureau fax and not in a face to face meeting. The Institute is a noneprofit making organisation, manned by people who want to conserve the Ibicencan culture and was founded by local people including several priests. Later in the week, the same local church authorities who sent the fax were in the news themselves for having built an illegal structure on the roof of the church in Sant Joan. After several months of bureaucratic procedures, the illegal structure was finally removed this week by the church authorities. Going, going, gone Locals have probably noticed that the Lidl supermarket in Figueretes has been demolished! The supermarket is continuing to trade from a marquee in the car park behind where the building used to be, until the new larger store is complete. Burning Car. A driver escaped from his burning car in Sant Llorenç village and watched it go up in flames by the side of the road. The vehicle was totally destroyed before the emergency services arrived on the scene. It seems that fires related to vehicles made lots of news this week. Apart from the car in Sant Llorenç, 2 vans were also destroyed by fire, one in Cala de Bou and the other in San Antonio. Both incidents occurred during the early hours of the morn-
ing and nobody was hurt as the vehicles were empty and parked by the road side. Drugs Found Destined For Ibiza. A 49 year old Moroccan man was detained at Denia Port when police found 25,5 kilos of hashish hid in 35 different packets in the car he was boarding on the ferry bound for Ibiza. Vacuum packed, the drugs were reportedly hidden in the air ventilation tubing of the car and in the lining of the boot. Party Boat Controls Latest. The business associations representing the operators of the party boats sailing from the Ports around Ibiza have signed up to a “Good Conduct” code covering their excursions. Agreeing the conditions in the presence of all the political and port authorities on the island, the code covers such things as reducing noise levels as the boats leave and enter harbours or pass by beaches or sail close to the shoreline. All the paper work of the boats will be checked and the operators will not allow passengers on board if they show signs of alcohol or drug abuse. Better control of waste disposal and other forms of contamination the excursions create are being imposed. The boats will have to carry extra waste containers on board so that all rubbish is selectively disposed of, especially drink bottles and plastic cups. Motorway Damages Claim. The firms who constructed the Ibiza Town to the airport and San Antonio motorway in 2005 have put in a damages claim to the courts for over 50 million €. They are suing the Balearic Government because they believe this authority is liable to compensate the constructors for the delays and extra costs they incurred when the large groups of residents organised protests against the planned motorways. These actions stopped the constructors working, causing costly delays and even led to machinery being damaged and an asphalt producing plant being dismantled by order of the Sant Josep Town Hall and relocated to another location. Apparently an independent report suggests that, if there is anything to pay it will be a lot less than 50 million €, more likely 14 million €. The Government refutes this legal action

Ibiza News Playa D’en Bossa Comment by Claire B So this is Playa D’en Bossa, just two days before the Easter weekend. The direct flights have started, the tourists are arriving, the beach bars and restaurants are all now open, the weather is gorgeous, and the beach is pretty much a nogo area! The washed-up sea grass covers up most of the beach is some areas and clogs up the entrance to the sea. They’ve just (slowly) started to remove it, but it wasn’t completed before the weekend. And where are the sun-beds? A few would be a welcoming site. The tourists who have come here for Easter must be wondering if they are expected. I appreciate that it is a large beach (and falls in the boundaries of two local councils – Ibiza Town and San Jose), but why not prepare a section of it that people can use? If I’d come here, to one of the most popular beaches on the island, I don’t think I’d want to come back here again at this time of year! If we want to encourage all-year round tourism, there’s a real need to start thinking about providing a ‘service’ to the tourists that spend their money here. believing that the judge will find in their favour and there is nothing to pay the motorway constructors. The Government is also considering starting their own legal action because studies have seemingly shown that the “toll” on vehicle usage of the motorways, which they have to pay to the construction companies for 30 years, was possibly not correctly calculated. What has been paid in “tolls” by the Balearic Government to the motorway constructors during the last 8 years, calculated on the number of vehicles using the roads, could mean that the final cost would reach 180 million €.
If this is the case then the Government could ask the courts to change the terms of the concession or take it away all together from the motorway constructors. Domestic Violence Increase. The level of domestic violence reported to the authorities in Ibiza and Formentera has increased in the last year to an all time high. With 708 cases reported, this has led to 208 protection orders being put in place and 144 men appearing before the courts. Also violence amongst family members other than between the male and female partner has increased with 14 cases of violence within the family being reported. Toddler Drowns in Pool Tragically, a two year old baby girl drowned at the weekend when she fell, apparently unnoticed, in to the family pool at a chalet on the outskirts of Ibiza Town. By the time the parents realised what had happened, the toddler was already unconscious and, though, the emergency services were soon on the scene, there was nothing that could be done to save the child. Zebra Crossing Accident. It seems that hardly a week goes by without reporting a pedestrian or car accident occurring at a zebra crossing somewhere on the island. This week a 50 year old woman was badly injured needing hospital treatment when she was run over by a car as she crossed and pedestrian crossing in Figueretes. Please remember that, though the law says traffic should give way to pedestrians on zebra crossings, this might not always be the case. Not only look left, right and left again but also make sure the vehicle is stopping before you cross! Lack Of Driving Examiners.
The seventeen driving schools in Ibiza and Formentera have officially complained about the lack of driving examiners to the authorities in Madrid and Palma. Their pupils on average have to wait at least five weeks after taking the theoretical exam before they can take the practical driving exam. It seems the reply from Madrid was that, they are offering tests to potential examiners. Four places as driving examiners in the Baleares were open to candidates who passed this Madrid exam but only one would be destined for Ibiza. Salt Industry in the Black There is no crisis in the salt industry on the island. There are, at the salt pans located in the Ses Salinas area of the island, 50,000 tons accumulated from last year and from the production of the first few months of this year ready for sale. Good weather means that production for the rest of the year looks like it will be high. Reducing prices by 30% and maintaining the high quality of the salt has meant that our salt is now being bought by the main table salt distributor in Spain “Sal Costa” based in Barcelona. Also some of our salt is exported and recently a cargo was sent to Scotland to be used on roads to stop them freezing. Archaeological Find To Be Conserved. Affecting 1800m2 of the proposed car park, the Mercadona supermarket chain has agreed to help pay for the conservation of the archaeological discoveries found on the site where they are building their new store in Puig Den Valls village. The site will be conserved but it has still has not been decided if it will be on display for the public to visit. Local Wine Sales Increase. There was a 12,6% increase in sales throughout Europe of wine made in Ibiza. 1015 hectolitres were exported to the EU with Germany being the biggest buyer. Outside Europe sales were also made to the USA, Japan, Switzerland and Andorra. In total 43.289 hectolitres of local wine was sold in 2013 with big increases being noted especially
in the sale of rose and white wines. Sant Josep Avenue Renew. Costing 295,000€ the entrance into Ibiza Town from Sant Josep, called the “Sant Josep Avenue”, is to be resurfaced and made safer. The work will start after Easter and is only a temporary improvement until a final plan for the re-modelling of this Avenue is decided upon. At the moment the only plan, which has been presented has been rejected by the authorities because it costs 5 million€ and would mean several houses have to be knocked down. Ca Ca Crack Down. In Ibiza Town the authorities will be distributing more leaflets encouraging the residents in Ibiza Town to pick up the dog pooh from their pets and to use dog leads and muzzles if required as well as control the noise problems their animals can create for other residents. More proactively, the authorities will also be dedicating a “Special force” of six officers to concentrate on enforcing the existing by laws governing the same things in a hope to “clean up” the streets and public areas. Sant Carles Traffic Jams To Be A Thing Of The Past. The exasperating traffic jams to navigate through the centre of Sant Carles village in summer are soon to be a thing of the past. A new ring road, costing 230,000€, will be completed by the 1st June. The Sant Joan PSOE Complain About Parking in Portinatx. The Socialists party in Sant Joan has been complaining about the lack of signalization at s’Arenal Petit and the beaches around the Portinatx beach area. The General Secretary, Pep Torres, has said the parking isn’t properly signalled which creates chaos in the summer, with tourists parking everywhere, holding up traf-
fic, and making it a nightmare for locals. Businesses and residents have been complaining about the state of parking in the summer for years and the Sant Joan Town Hall has made no changes. Simple things like a new ‘Welcome to Portinatx’ sign at Can Lluqui and signs to let people know where you are allowed to park are the solutions suggested for this season. What Are Our Tourists Like? A recent official survey has defined a “Stereotype” of the tourist which visits Ibiza. The study revealed that 54% of all our tourists now arrive here without having bought the traditional tourist package and that 54% are between the ages 25 to 44 years old. Tourists between 45 and 64 years of age have decreased by 20% making up on 12% of the total. 20% of all tourists now stay in privately rented accommodation and 53% in 3 star hotels. The number of tourists staying in 4 star hotels has dropped to only 18%. So there you have it, no matter where our tourists come from, they are getting younger, they are price and quality conscious, and are more independent choosing to design their own holiday rather than opt for a package. Port Services Stay with State It was announced last week that the merchant traffic, ferry services and charter boats, which operate out of the port of San Antonio, will continue to operate under the auspices of the island Government and the State port authorities once the port and nautical marina in the town is privatised. This decision pleased the nautical sector in the town and the Town hall who, had fought hard to defend the interests of the 30 or so companies operating ferry services and charter hire in the Port of San Antonio.

Wishing all of our Dutch friends and readers at Tulp and throughout Ibiza a great Koningsdag. Dutch owned Tulp on the San Antonio Passeo is one of our favourite summer haunts. Paul and Diana add something new every year and Saturday´s opening party found us mingling with giant dogs and elephants, lazing in hammocks and swings in a bigger beach lounge, and of course tucking in plenty of Frikandel and Bitterballen. I´ve even developed a taste for the Herring. Also new for 2014 is Tulp´s Vinyl only room.

Ibiza Baby? Should I stay or should I go? A decision many an ex-pat mum-to-be has had to make. Concerns regarding the language barrier, perceived differences in procedures during labour, supporting family network—these are just some of the factors that will go towards the decision to stay in Ibiza or return to the UK. There is no right or wrong decision, everybody has to do what feels right for their own family's needs. In this admirably forthright report families correspondent Carly S gives an account of her own pregnancy in Ibiza.
"Carly S In early January 2013, my husband and I went to see a specialist at Can Misses as we'd been trying to get pregnant for over a year and a half and had had no joy. We were elated to discover at our appointment that I was actually pregnant. Beaming and excited, we called our parents and shared our news. We moved from the boat (that had been home since moving to Ibiza) into an apartment, excitedly discussing names and plans for the future. I was overjoyed and floated around on a cloud of bliss. However, in the sixth week of
my pregnancy all this excitement came crashing down when I miscarried. Devastated Information:Spanish Midwifery Website Âhttp://www.comadronas.org/ Mums in Spain—great resource for ex-pat mums Âhttp://www.mumsinspain.com/
doesn't even begin to cover it. I cried inconsolably, I couldn't sleep, couldn't think about anything other than the torturous unanswerable 'why' and I felt as though part of my heart had been torn away. Through all of it, my husband was incredible. The medical staff I encountered was also amazingly supportive and caring. They were gentle in confirming the news, reassured me that I could try again and booked me in for a scan two weeks later to check that everything had returned to normal. It had, and the consultant told me my cycle should return in the next few weeks and there was nothing to stop us trying again if we wanted. This was something my friends and family who'd experienced miscarriages in the UK had sadly not found. There, it seems the only time a mother's invited back is if she is still experiencing pain or bleeding after a few weeks. The 'check up scan' is not part of the procedure. Medical staff deal with thousands of cases like these and, in my friends and families experiences back home, can treat you in an almost blasé, dismissive manner, forgetting that what's normal and common to them in the medical world is devastating and heart breaking to you. Fortunately, the doctors and nurses I met here were understanding, sympathetic and gentle and I am forever thankful to them for showing me such sensitivity. When, a month later, my cycle hadn't recommenced as the doctor had said, and I was feeling nauseous I began to wonder if I might be pregnant again. A home test said I was, so I called the medical centre for an appointment to confirm it. When it was confirmed by my midwife Ana Amor Belen a few days later, I was walking on air again, but terrified it would end in another miscarriage. I shared these fears, and a few tears, with Ana at that first appointment and she was incredible. She hugged me, listened, told me that if I was not meant to be pregnant my body would not have allowed it so soon, gave me her personal phone number so I could call whenever I wanted and made me feel a whole lot more positive about the whole thing. She booked me an appointment for a scan at Can Misses the following week to determine how far along I was. We wept happy tears to see a kicking, wriggling foetus and hear its strong heartbeat. I was completely surprised to discover that I was eight weeks pregnant, just nine weeks after miscarrying. The obstetrician, however, was not surprised and said women are incredibly fertile after a miscarriage or a birth. Throughout my pregnancy Ana was amazing. With her brightly coloured clothes, chatty, friendly nature, vibrant energy, quirkiness and genuine care, Ana was a breath of fresh air. I looked forward to my appointments with her and loved the way she closed her eyes and breathed deeply when checking my bump and the way she chatted and put me at ease. On day one I had high blood pressure (not surprising considering the circumstances), so Ana made me see my doctor who told me to monitor it at home for a week. At home, my readings were normal, so he decided I actually had 'white coat syndrome' but advised me to keep a check on it anyway at home and let him know if it went up. Knowing I was nervous due to my previous miscarriage, he made weekly appointments for the first trimester to check my progress, again something my UK family and friends had not experienced. A wonderful summer passed without incident and myself and my ever growing, kicking, wriggling, marvellous bump were incredibly well looked after. Antenatal classes with Ana were great and were really helping improve my Spanish too. When my home blood pressure reading was high three weeks before my due date, I called Ana. I had an appointment for later that day anyway, but she said to come in straight away. She took my blood pressure, found it dangerously high and checked the baby's heartbeat and found that to be a little quick as well. I started to panic, but she calmed me down. She called my doctor who rec-

“the doctors and nurses I met here were understanding, sympathetic and gentle. I am forever thankful to them for showing me such sensitivity” ommended sending me to urgencias in San Antonio. Ana only had a couple more appointments so she saw them, and then came to join me in urgencias, chatting and keeping me calm as I waited. They confirmed I had high blood pressure, prescribed medication and sent me to Can Misses labour ward to have a thorough check over. My husband left work and collected me and we went to Can Misses where I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and told to take it as easy as possible for the rest of the pregnancy. They gave me appointments for weekly monitoring and urine and blood pressure checks until three days after my due date. Our baby was scanned, listened to, measured and diagnosed as absolutely fine and ready to come out any time in the next few weeks. I was so relieved. Ana phoned me at home that night to see how everything had gone. She had gone above and beyond her duty and we felt incredibly supported. Mike and I decided that if our Wriggler (a moniker we'd used for our baby, whose sex we didn't want to know in advance, due to its constant moving, kicking and squirming in uterus) was a girl, her middle name would be Amor, in homage to our inimitable midwife.
“many of the professionals spoke English and those that didn't were incredibly patient with my less than perfect Spanish” When I still hadn't given birth three days after my due date and my urine results had confirmed that my pre eclampsia was worsening, the staff at Can Misses decided to induce the labour. I'd been having Braxton-Hicks contractions for over a month, the baby was in position and everything looked good for a fairly quick birth. I agreed to the induction as I was now the size of a small house, with swollen feet and hands, and I was growing impatient to see my baby. I was sent to the delivery unit and Mike came in to join me, picking up the hospital bags on the way. It turned out Ela wasn't as ready to leave as the doctors had thought. I won't go into detail, but she took thirty six hours to arrive and required forceps. When Ela Amor Violet arrived at 11:30pm on November 16th, I wept with joy. Our little miracle was finally here. From day one, I was impressed with the staff here. My doctor Ricarte, my London trained and fluent English speaking midwife Ana and my nurse Monica were all fabulous. Everyone in the delivery unit was amazing. They were helpful, but not overbearing, kind, friendly and kept us informed throughout. Oscar, the male midwife who induced me, also ended up being with me for the final stage of labour and the birth. He was wonderful calm, encouraging, sensitive and reassuring. The staff on the labour ward for the three days I was kept in after the birth was also, with the exception of one nurse utterly devoid of people skills, wonderfully caring, attentive and friendly. The aftercare here is brilliant. My nurse was still monitoring my blood pressure until last month when she decided it had been good for long enough for me to be dismissed. The language barrier wasn't a problem as many of the professionals spoke English and those that didn't were incredibly patient with my less than perfect Spanish. Every other woman I've spoken to who's given birth here has had nothing but good things to say about the level of care. If you're worried about having a baby in Ibiza, please don't be. I don't think you could be in safer, more caring hands.

"Claire B This festival to celebrate the first Sunday of May runs throughout the town from April 20th to June 14th. The festival commemorates the lucky escape of churchgoers after the old church, S’Església Vella, collapsed into the sea just after mass had finished May 1st. Legend has it that one day, the old church located on the summit of S’Església Vella hill, caved in when mass had just finished. As luck would have it, nobody in the congregation was hurt. This was seen as a miracle and ever since, the town of Santa Eulalia has commemorated the event on the first Sunday in May, the date when the church collapsed. Legend also says that on stormy nights, ships passing nearby could hear the sound of church bells ringing on the sea bed, warning sailors that they were close to the coast. Celebrations start with a traditional solemn mass, followed by a parade of horse-drawn carts and wagons, plus other activities such as a vintage car parade, flower displays, folk dancing, concerts, children’s parties, sporting competitions and exhibitions. San Antonio for Families
"Sophia V San Antonio and the Bay have a lot of attractions for families on holiday. There is plenty to offer in respect of parents wanting to ensure that their children have an enjoyable holiday. Where to stay Cala de Bou offers some of the best family-friendly hotels, such as San Remo, Riviera hotel, Sirenis Sea-view hotel with a fantastic aqua park, Fiesta Tanit Cala Gracio just outside San Antonio and many more. These hotels offer great entertainment packages, organised activities for children, as well as a disco. There are also babysitting and daytime crèche’s. What to do Across San Antonio and the bay, you will find many familythemed bars, again with live entertainment, several parks, basketball courts, golf courses, playgrounds, excursions and beach activities to participate in. One particularly large playground is in Port Des Torrent. The Gorila market in Cala de Bou makes a great day out, with its stalls selling crafted items and clothes, not to mention the res-
taurant on sight, rides and bouncy castles for the children, which takes places every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Pedal bikes and beach buggies can also be hired if you fancy exploring. There is also an aquarium in San Antonio, and a playground / arcade opposite Marco Polo hotel, containing trampolines, a golf course, an indoor arcade, pool tables, prize machines, and a bar
and internet facilities for adults. Further up the road, there are also Go Karts. There is a daily train in San Antonio whereby families can enjoy a ride, sightseeing. As well as the gorgeous sandy beaches and clear sea, there are swimming pools suitable for families, such as La Bahia, a fun, lively pool complete with restaurants, slides and a sea view, which is situated in the bay.

"Who
are you and what brought you to Ibiza? I’m a celebrity masseur, retreat Ocean Beach Club detox organiser, and DJ. First it was the music, but when I got here I realised there was much more to Ibiza. I loved everyone’s persona and aura, the energy goes much more deeper, with a holistic health feel, rather than just a clubbing scene. There is something truly special about the island, which is hard to describe.
"Your favourite place in Ibiza?
Bennirass and Es Vedra are my two favourite places at the moment. Benirras has a natural hippy vibe that brings everyone together, regardless of whether you’re rich or poor. Es Vedra is beautiful with the beach being so crystal clear, you can definitely feel something, a mysterious energy if you like, being the 3rd most magnetic point on the planet.
"Any advice for people wanting to
make it in Ibiza? Determination – whatever you’re doing, never stop trying. Just make sure to try and plan as much as you can. I came to Ibiza all the way from London with no connections, it was quite difficult at first, but something on this island made me want to stay, and it had worked out well for me, building myself up from nowhere to being a celebrity masseur and wellness manager at Ocean Beach Club.

Postbag & Community Age Concern Thanks Age Concern Ibiza and Formentera would like to thank Margaret Nawaz and her volunteers for the donation of €2322 which is half of the proceeds made at the Easter Fair on the 19th April, at Bar Cruce, in San Rafael. I would like to thank them for their support, as without their generosity, we could not fulfil our obligations. Tony Curtis – President at Age Concern Ibiza and Formentera: A Plea To Our Island Visitors. This is a double plea, one serious and one not so, from a long term island resident to all our visitors this summer. The season is already upon us and it is obviously "crazy time" again in Ibiza as having driven around 500 km this last week all over the island due to work, I have been utterly amazed at the poor quality of drivers of hire cars. Undertaking with no room, overtaking on unbroken white lines, going through red traffic and pedestrian lights, not stopping at zebra crossings, parking illegally, the list is endless. The worst case has to be the other day, when I was overtaking a lorry on the d/carriageway goThe Far East
"The 2 Old Rockers Easter Delights. We hope you all enjoyed the Easter hol’s. We spent ours in Cleethorpes (The Riviera of the North of England) where it’s been quite colourful, various skin colours in the day time, with everyone turning blue at night. It was the first birthday of our grand daughter who for some reason had two parties, start them of on the right path we say. We did go on an Easter Egg Hunt, but found ourselves in trouble when we shot three! Charity Successes. Last Friday was a fantastic day, the weather absolutely scorchio! It was also the day that The Sunshine Girls handed over a cheque for 5300€ to the Asociación Contra el Cancer de Ibiza and Formentera which they had raised from the sale of their “saucy” 2014 calendar. The idea was first thought of at Bar Mariposa on Pueblo Asparagus in Cala Llonga last year, so it was fitting that the cheque was handed over at the Mariposa’s Easter Fair. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the associa-
ing towards Ibiza just before the tunnel at San Rafael. Now we all know there is one of the three max 80km speed cameras just there and as I slowed down, still o/taking the lorry in front, this absolute idiot in an Audi Q6 hire car from OK (yes, mate, you know who you are!) came hammering up behind me and stayed within a metre of my rear, flashing and honking his horn. As I was doing 80 he obviously got frustrated and then undertook me, then incredibly swerved right in front of me and overtook the lorry. Sheer stupidity! The other plea is for those of you who walk round and in to the shops, banks etc. dressed in nothing but a thong and a bikini top - and as for you girls, well! Please don't, not only because guys of my age could suffer a heart-attack but more importantly, it would be as well to show some respect to our Ibicencan friends. After all, if any of us did that in UK, we'd get picked up by the police! Yours, Jezza

He did say that he was a little disappointed at not being invited to photographing sessions. He also said that radiotherapy facilities will be on the island next month and would be operational very soon! Barbara and Jo, two of the Sunshine Girls thanked everyone who bought a calendar, all of the sponsors, donors and the other ladies who were brave enough to bare almost all to make the calendar possible, with special thanks to Alan for the expert photography. “Mr” Frankie Riley provided the musical entertainment, a few glasses of cava were consumed, all in all, a lovely day.

Extra Terrestrials? We read with great interest the story of the appearance of an unknown object in the skies over Ibiza last week. There are various thoughts and explanations of what it might actually have been ranging from a UFO, space junk re-entering the earth’s atmosphere, a meteorite, a missile or similar military object. We assume that Astroblog will have a theory but our money is firmly on some little green men or other form of ET. But why were they flying over Ibiza? It’s quite obvious, they were looking for Space!!! Letter From Juan
"Juan I am a keen sports fan, I enjoy nearly every sport under the sun and those played on ice. So what I am about to complain about is not an anti sport complaint it is a complaint about the organizers. I live in the campo and I drove out the other day down the hill and turned into the campo road and noticed each side of the road was covered in orange streamers. Oh, oh, I thought there must be a cycle race coming up and then travelled a few hundred metres down the road only to find a charming young lady standing in the middle of the road saying I
could not continue on my journey the way I was intending to go but I had to go up into the hills. However I wasn’t sure if my car would fit on the track that she was suggesting so I said I would turn around and go back home and no she cried very “peligroso you have to wait her for half an hour or go up that track”. “But I am only just in there in the hills” I pleaded but to no avail. So I just turned around and headed home, meeting two cyclists coming the other way. I got home safely, parked the car, got my camera and headed back down the hill on foot to photograph the racers. There were lots of pairs shooting pass but there were also packs of six or seven riders coming tearing round the bend right across the track which could have been a bit tricky if I had been in my car. So I know why the girl tried to stop me and I have no complaint against her but I do have a complaint against the organizers. I could easily turned right on to the camino from my house and crashed into a group of cyclist spread across the road coming round a blind bend and over a hill. How are we meant to know when we come down our hill or side road that the fact there are some streamers attached to a few trees we are not to leave our house!! Surely if the gas, the telephone or water people can pin up notices it is not beyond the wit of the Cyclist organizers when they are hanging up the streamers to pin notices at least at every junction saying there will be a race on this day between the hours of this and that. They could maybe be included on their streamers. I suppose it will take an accident to happen before they do anything about it and that is not fair to the cyclists or the car drivers. Also on the subject of accidents remember at this time of year you have to be vigilant as there are people on the road who may suddenly be driving on the wrong side of the road or they may suddenly shoot out from a side road
or a parking position because they have looked the wrong way to see if any traffic is coming. Drive carefully and remember that old Highway Patrol saying “leave your blood at the Bank not on the Highway”. Yours Juan View from the Pew
"Lynne Pamplin New life was very much in our minds last week, not only for the church as we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus and the promise of new life for everyone who believes, but also for us personally with the birth of our fourth grandchild, Samuel. A great deal of rejoicing went on. At the first Easter, the disciples had to wait for the good news, and it took them some time to believe it, but they did once Jesus began to appear to them and talk to them and even eat with them. On the day that our daughter-in-law went into hospital, we were in an area of Ibiza where there is no mobile phone signal, so we too had to wait for news. Finally, as we were returning to the chaplaincy house, my phone beeped and I read a text message simply saying: Samuel David Pamplin. Our son can be a man of few words, so we thought he was too busy being a Dad for the first time that he didn’t want to spend time on a longer text. Not so! Over an hour later the phone beeped again, and there was a text sent three hours earlier than the other, with much more detail, except the name, which had not at that point been decided upon. So much for modern communication! Soon we had “proof” of Samuel’s arrival when the first photo arrived, and during Easter

Health Matters
"Kevin Russel Medication Safety As far back as 2006 there were global concerns that the emerging swine flu could potentially wipe out humanity. As the pandemic started to spread from the East and the headlines hit the press in the West, pharmaceutical companies raced to find a cure. A cure that would, for them be a cash cow and it turned out to be just that. Now though in recent weeks there has been a lot of heated debate concerning the efficacy of the drugs and how they were presented to the governments that ended up buying them in bulk. For a medicine to be approved and made available to the public it first has to go through rigorous testing, animal trials then human clinical trials and finally approval by national regulators. This is a long and expensive process, but a process that has to be meticulous
to prevent potential public harm. At the centre of the row are two medicines Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and Zanamivir (Relenza) which governments across Europe and America stockpiled millions of doses, spending billions of pounds, Euros and dollars on drugs that the Cochrane Collaboration say aren’t that effective. The Cochrane Collaboration is an internationally renowned body of academics that looks at clinical data, reporting on their findings. It carries out meta-analysis of data collected from as many sources as possible to inform the decision makers (governmental departments of health) on what is effective and safe. It is a highly respected body. In relation to the swine flu epidemic, the Cochrane Collaboration studied over 160,000 pages of data ascertaining that the Tamiflu and Relenza were only marginally better than paracetamol in treating the flu symptoms and did not stop anyone getting
complications such as pneumonia. Also the methodology of several of the clinical trials had faults and so results couldn’t be truthfully interpreted. This is contrary to what the drug manufacturers had claimed. Furthermore the drugs had side effects such as nauseas and vomiting and even psychiatric events. The wider discussion is that drug companies have been selective about the data that they decided to publish. Worries that negatively impacting data gets literally binned and only good data released are not new. A new

openness and transparency is essential both ethically and to prevent governments wasting billions of pounds of public money but also to advise best practices for the good of patient health. Doris Loves The World Nutty Knitters This week Mother Earth’s day, buzzing of the bees Let’s do what we can to preserve them please, Get rid of our excess, hunger, pain and greed, Picture people thriving, with just what they need, Share joy and friendship, loving touch of grace, Sometimes we forget it in the fast rat race, Even on our island, hotting up a-pace, Scarcity in winter brings us to this place Where we spy main chance, tourists hauling cash, To replenish our stocks so we’ll build a stash To help survive cold moons, season here so short, But I know that happiness can’t ever be bought. So I’m co-creating with that higher realm, Digging meself out from paper overwhelm, Sitting pretty on my terrace with a ball of wool, That should do the trick – entwine, rope in, pull What I fervently desire – all fighting to cease, So that our dear Mother can now rest in peace, And me mop and bucket will do just the same, Take a gentle breather, no one left to blame, Builders, decorators, plumbers, finish with me house, No doors left to wrestle, no one left to dowse, I can devote energies to a humble crust, Before my old bones join the cement dust! No doubt come October, there’ll be peeling paint, Ibiza’s very lovely but problem-free it ain’t! My idea of Heaven is no more ownership, Land returned to Pacha Mama, she’s our Mother Ship Wouldn’t take much doing, quakes or asteroid Could obliterate me pipes exposing the void, Black hole might suck me in to neighbour’s cesspit, So I’ll keep perspective and happily I’ll knit, Whatever might await us, destiny or fate, I’m crocheting brand new start – it’s never too late! Doubt I’ll ever fathom Ibiza’s drains or shatters So I’m sticking with me joy – a group of nutty knitters! Luv Doris, the new age guru x Âwww.dorisandfriends.com Âdoristlc@hotmail.com

ARIES - The Moon. Time to look at life as it really is, rather than through rose tinted glasses. We can all make life tougher for ourselves by not facing facts. So, if a person or situation does not live up to expectations, challenging this and moving on might be the biggest gift to yourself. Time to use your head not your heart! TAURUS - Prince of Wands. New business opportunities bring added responsibilities. Can I cope with the workload? Will I succeed or fail? These are some of the questions you ask yourself this week. Much will depend on the cooperation of others, therefore time management will be crucial to your success. You may have to monitor a colleagues input or help them to manage their workload. GEMINI - The High Priestess. Time for self reflection and to allow your intuitive side to guide you through the week. If something doesn't feel right, then trust that process. If it feels good, then go for it! This card is beguiling and hints of intriguing new connections that will shape life for some time to come. You are being asked to trust the universe. CANCER - King of Wands. A week when there's never a dull moment. You'll have more energy and will not be content to stay at home; especially with so many intriguing opportunities on offer. Others take notice and make demands on your precious time; however, you'll cope beautifully. Last weeks challenges become this weeks opportunities. Influential men offer sound advise career wise. LEO - Judgement. This is the week to do some mind yoga and clear your head of any long held negative thought patterns. Liberate yourself and in doing so, you'll rediscover your inner warrior or the fun loving Leo qualities that makes you so attractive. As a consequence, others will free their mindset and judgement of you. An exciting week, full of possibilities. VIRGO- Prince of Disks. Beware of that the tall/petite dark or fair, good looking stranger who may not be all he or she is cracked up to be. Either for business or pleasure they'll have plenty of charm that's for sure. Have fun or be entertained, but leave it at that. Likewise, be careful about handing out loans or business opportunities to those you hardly know! LIBRA - The Emperor. You're back on tip top form this week. Everything you need to accomplish - you can with ease. Your leadership qualities stand out so expect to be approached and asked to organise or take charge of a project. This week is a week where you'll say YES to to practically everything; just don't overdo it and reach burnout by the 30th. SCORPIO - King of Swords. Sweeping change is in the air and it's possibly a partner, relative or close associate who will call the shots or chooses the direction that this change takes. Even if you aren't initially enamoured at what's being presented, don't shot them or their idea's down in flames. Maybe for a change, they know what's best for all concerned. SAGITTARIUS - Justice. Karma or you reap what you sow - is a meaning of this card so pay special attention to how cause and effect operates in your life. Do you need to make amends or be of service to others? The universe brings you back into balance kindnesses rewarded and debts duly paid. Meditate on this as you act out your week. CAPRICORN - Seven of Disks. It would be easy to contemplate your navel this week. However, your financial situation indicates that you should knuckle down and either; get something started that can earn you money or, finish projects and claim what you're due. Get get over this brief bout of lack of self confidence as financial rewards only come to those who persevere. AQUARIUS - Princess of Disks. Quite a few things need your attention, but don't let everything overwhelm you into a standstill. Opportunities arise on a daily basis so it's easy to see why you might be confused as to which ones are the right ones for you! Take your time; there really is no rush. The same opportunities will be there next week. PISCES - Ten of Swords. If life's been somewhat fraught, take heart. The worst is over and you'll soon find yourself free from a situation or relationship that has sapped far too much of your precious energy. Time to look up, smile, and rediscover your sense of humour. Appreciate and tap into your healing relationships and spend time with those who enrich your life.

Most often the exact time of major tragedies is hidden from public scrutiny – deliberately I believe so that ‘speculation’ by astrologers is stifled. In this case the exact time of 8.48am local time was recorded as being the moment the disaster commenced. Consequently I can provide you with a chart of that moment, although the actual ‘crucial’ moment was a while later at 10.50am. It makes interesting reading, with most noticeably Pluto in Capricorn situated in Pluto’s own 8th house, sometimes attributed as ‘the house of death’. Of course, death and subsequent re-birth go hand in hand, so we shall in the future see the event as a turning point. Of course, Pluto in Capricorn is all about the bringing to light of corporate misdeeds, and we already have statements and admissions suggesting that sloppy seamanship was to blame. Suggestions that the cargo was not secured and moved during the turn, thereby tipping the ship past its limit are but one aspect. An inexperienced hand at the helm, failure of the crew to follow emergency procedures, and abandon ship first, instead of directing passengers to don lifejackets, etc. Time and hard evidence will prove the truth of the matter, but there is a strong general perception of the ship’s management having been weak and inadequate.

Pluto in the chart was in close opposition to Jupiter (expansion) in the water sign of Cancer and situated in the 2nd house of money and personal possessions. Greed perhaps, manifested by the cutting of corners? Pluto was squared to Uranus (shock/sudden/unexpected) in Aries (blindly driving forward regardless of consequences) in the 11th house of friends. Close to Uranus was Mercury (travel/communications) in Aries, indicating communications made head down without thought. The Ascendant of the chart was in Mercury, (communications/travel) the Descendent was in Sagittarius (no limits) and the Midheaven was in egalitarian Aquarius. So, 8.48am was the starting point of the disaster, but with slightly different circumstances, it would have not happened, and would have been a ‘close moment’ that no-one would have noticed. Sound captaincy, the hold cargo secured, properly trained and disciplined crew, following instructions from coastguards - all would have lessened and even prevented what happened. The whole episode was a downward spiral, witnessed and indicated by the planets, just as the hands of clocks too witnessed them. The eventual point of disaster was at 10.50am when Jupiter crossed the Ascendant, followed by Pluto crossing the Decedent two minutes later. That was the death knell for so many. And so you may ask, if the planets were in this configuration at this moment, why were there not other disasters? Simply because the contributory components were not in place – those points I mentioned earlier. The ship or rather the ship’s circumstances that were moulded by the captain and his crew was the disaster waiting to happen.

From 8pm The New English Speaking Club, Bar City, Aragon 88, Ibiza Tel 691 957 833 I’m sure we’ve all watched people – especially on the roads on Ibiza and described them as ‘an accident waiting to happen’. Some have been blessed at birth with an extraordinary amount of ‘good luck’. For others, their luck runs out. We are all blessed with human life upon this planet Earth, and naturally follow the multiverse pattern of birth, growth, decline and eventual death followed of course by re-birth. During each life we learn, and hopefully carry forth that wisdom to the next. So much for the past, what of the future? We have seen this week the ramping up of the stress window which surrounds a Solar Eclipse. I mentioned last week that the next one will be on the 29th, accompanying the New Moon in Taurus. During the approach to the eclipse, and in its wake, Mercury features heavily in the heavenly activity. And so, my watchword for the two weeks is communications and transport/travel. It will be a couple of weeks to be careful what you say, who you say it to, where you go, and how you travel. I have a client who does not suffer fools gladly, and sometimes can be ‘assertive’… I occasionally look at her chart and mention Mercury’s presence, to which I get the reply – ‘I know, keep it buttoned’. That could be a sound philosophy for us all around this eclipse. The effect of an eclipse can last up to a year, and so is a big topic. I had intended to expand this week, but the Korean disaster took over. I conclude this week, and hope you will join me with a prayer and blessings to the Cosmos for all the lost souls and their relatives in Korea. Your Ibiza Astrologer.

"Jack Wharrie Welcome back pool fans to the final analysis for our humble little league. This year has been, in general, much better and more fluid that previous years but as always we'll be looking to improve it with each passing year. Comments from our own editor Nick Gibbs included: “Nothing should take away from the positives of the 2014 league. The table has been far more fluid, some great reports of close matches and upsets, more teams, more Spanish players and Piratas B coming out as worthy winners.” As always, while there can only be one victorious team there can also be little rivalries and bit of trivia that pop up in places, and while these hold no material value they can often be invaluable bragging rights. I'll start of with the champions, Ibiza Piratas B, as they devoured the competition in a nearly unbeaten streak. Keyword there being “nearly”, they notched up a total of 15 wins out of 16 matches with only one team escaping from their grasp with a win, that team was the Fish and Ships. Coming in second place this year was the Ship Inn, however while not managing to catch-up to the champs they did manage to do something the champions couldn't do. The Ship Inn were the only team to get a win in every amount as they won 9-0 against Sun and Moon, 8-1 against Piratas A and Smugglers B, a fair few 7-2s and 6-3s and one 5-4 against Smugglers A. In the spirit of giving more glory to the top dogs Bar Home also managed to have an intriguing run of games being the only bar to notch up a string of repeating victories, winning 5-4 for 5 weeks in a row! Now to some geographical rivalries while Father Jacks are the only team outside of San Antonio this year (hopefully we can change that next year) the rest of the teams can all be divided into two sections: San Antonio and San Antonio Bay. Starting off in the bay, we had a three way tussle for the title of “Kings of the Bay” between Smugglers A, Smugglers B and Sun and Moon. This contest was one-sided even though the winner's form faltered and gained the fewest points in the overall contest. The Kings of the Bay 2013-2014 are Sun
and Moon as they recorded a double victory over each bayside opponent. Results: 1st Sun and Moon Won 4 Lost 0 Points 24. 2nd Smugglers A Won 1 Lost 3 Points 15. 3rd Smugglers B Won 1 Lost 3 Points 15. Following on we have the “Rulers of San An” which was contested between both Ibiza Piratas teams, Bar Home, Ship Inn and Fish and Ships. Now with this one there isn't much change due to the dominance of the champions. The Rulers of San An 2013-2014 are the Ibiza Piratas B. Results: 1st Ibiza Piratas B Won 7 Lost 1 Points 49. 2nd Ship Inn Won 5 Lost 3 Points 44. 3rd Bar Home Won 4 Lost 4 Points 35. 4th Ibiza Piratas A Won 3 Lost 5 Points 27. 5th Fish and Ships Won 1 Lost 7 Points 25. This year we've also had a few teams sharing venues: both of the Piratas sharing Ibiza Piratas bar both Smugglers teams cohabiting The Smuggler's Inn and Ship Inn and Fish and Ships in The Ship Inn. So why not see which pair came out standing above the rest? This was a bit more varied when you consider the final positions of everybody but in the end the Piratas A team didn't slow down the Piratas B squad as they jointly won more glory for the Piratas' cove. The Double Team Dynamos 2013-2014 are The Ibiza Piratas. Results: 1st Ibiza Piratas Won 11 Lost 5 Points 83. 2nd The Ship Inn Won 6 Lost 10 Points 70. 3rd The Smuggler's Inn Won 7 Lost 9 Points 63. Finally though we have some caretaking to do, with the rescheduling of the Father Jacks vs Smugglers A match. The tension was high throughout but they all carried on, ending in was an even match for both teams, which ironically gave the Fathers one point less than they would have had if they'd kept the 6-0 forfeit win. Father Jacks 5 – Smugglers A 4. This result gives us this ending table: With this all over, that's it! The league is finished once again. Thank you to all who have read my column throughout the winter and have allowed me to, hopefully, entertain you along the way. But for now this is adios until next winter. Captain Jack “Sparrow” Wharrie.

miership, Saracens stayed top with two games to go as they beat Newcastle away, Northampton stay second after their 36-21 win at home to London Irish, Bath moved in to third after their win at the Rec against bottom club Worcester, Leicester are in fourth, and elsewhere, Wasps beat Gloucester and Sale, in fifth, trounced Exeter 55-12 down in Dibben. Finally, in Tennis. Great to see Roger Federer back in form again and back to World No 4, as he reached the Final of the Monte Carlo Open, having beaten arch rival Novak Djokovic in the semi. Unfortunately he lost out to fellow Swiss and No 3 Stanislav Wawrinka, 2 sets to 1, in the Final but there's obviously lots of running in the old dog yet, so good luck to him. Gotta go, running out of time and space, next week's report will be coming from somewhere in the middle of France as I make my way to the Bridge, via Denia, St Malo, Jersey and Gatwick, so wish me luck! Hot Off The Press, Tuesday April 24th 9.05am A quick postscript to my report and
my comments on David Moyes and Manchester United. Literally just been informed that he has been given the ole boot by United, which was probably the Premier League's worst kept secret since last night (Monday) when rumours abounded that he was on his way out. Shame really because Moysey was a nice fella but just lacked that cutting edge in experience for the really big games, as proven by the club's results this season. United legend Ryan Giggs has been named as interim manager and lots of names being bandied about including Ancelotti and Simeone, but my money's on Dutchman Louis van Gaal getting the hot seat after he finishes Holland's World Cup venture in Brazil in the summer. If he is appointed, don't forget, you read it here first in The Ibizan! Jezza Formula 1
"Rhian Gibbs So here we are at China, Mercedes have so far been strong and nothing changed in Shanghai. With Hamilton once again on pole (providing a superb lap in qualifying in the rain) and cushioned between his team mate and both Red Bulls we were in for an interesting race. Epic is not a word I’d use for this race, and a world
apart from Bahrain, however the victory was emphatic and well deserved. It was a Mercedes 1,2 in the end with Alonso’s Ferrari crossing in 3rd, his teammate Raikkonen only managing 8th again struggling with his car. The Redbull’s could have posed a threat however the current World Champion Vettel seemed to lack pace, and again was ordered to let the faster Ricciardo past – they finished Ricciarado 4th and Vettel 5th – another blow to the Redbull team. Massa had an incredible and quite aggressive start to the race in which he collided with Alonso off the starting grid and despite his best efforts, could not maximise his chances after an unfortunate mix-up over rear tyres left him only able to gain 15th after falling last. Force India once again showed their potential both finishing in the top 10 of the grid and as a contrast, McLaren suffered real lack of downforce and grip, finishing 11th and 13th. So in a weekend where Hamilton got his first hat-trick of consecutive wins and joined the likes of such greats as Nikki Lauda and Jim Clark in their 25th Grand Prix victories it’s hard not to focus on the power that is Mercedes – but as we move onto the European circuits nothing is certain.
Sport Jezzer´s Sport Report
"Jeremy Parmenter Hi there, sports fans and I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter. Premiership Football. It would definitely have been a great Easter if you happen to be a Liverpool FC fan and for that matter a Sunderland aficionado, after what happened over the last few days as both the formers title rivals faltered and the latter look as if they might pull off the great escape. Firstly, Manchester City, playing one of their two games in hand, dropped 2 points as they drew 2-2 at the Etihad with Sunderland in a match they were expected to cruise through. Then nearest challengers Chelsea blew a gasket and three points at the Bridge on Saturday, losing 2-1 to the Black Cats and with that, their incredible record of 77 games unbeaten at home in the Premier League under Mourinho. Having said that, the Blues were beaten by a disputed penalty which was, ironically, put away by a player on loan from, yes, you guessed it, the 'Pool! Then, to cap it all, Stevie G's boys went to Norwich in what could have been a banana skin but came through, rather fortuitously 3-2 to go 5 points clear of the Blues. Although City then won 3-1 at West Bromwich on Monday, if the Pool win their last three
games then they will be Champions, and let's face it, with them having won their last 10 or so games, they will thoroughly deserve it! Elsewhere, it's still too tight to call for that all important fourth spot, with contenders Arsenal one point ahead of Everton, with three games to go. The Gunners, having won 3-0 at Hull in an FA Cup Final rehearsal, were then helped by the Toffees surprisingly losing 3-2 to revitalised Crystal Palace at Goodison in their game in hand midweek but then Martinez's men got back in the groove and cranked up the pressure on their rivals on Sunday with a deserved 2-0 win over crisis club Manchester United, handing the Reds their eleventh loss of the season. As for manager Moyes, his future is up in the air as I write, but, come on guys, give him a chance at least until next season: after all, Sir Alex didn't win anything for four years after he started at OT! At the bottom, as mentioned, Sunderland are on a bit of a roll, having clawed back 4 points from their last two games and are now only un point behind Cardiff and Fulham, and with a game in hand. The former drew 1-1 at Stoke and the latter were beaten yet again, this time 3-1 at Tottenham. Norwich and West Brom are still
not out of the woods yet, while Aston Villa, after their stalemate with Southampton, are looking safer. Finally, Newcastle lost at home yet again, this time 2-1 to Swansea, West Ham lost at home 1-0 to Palace, who, apart from Liverpool, must be the team of the moment, as they recorded their fifth consecutive win. It's the big one in Europe on Tuesday for Chelsea, our sole reps in the Champions League semis, as they take on Atletico Madrid in Spain's capital city in the first leg. Lots of interesting points here, not least Jose's return to Spain, and Torres returning to his old stamping ground for the first time since his transfer to England. Here's hoping he can put one over on his old mates, although I'm not holding my breath but a draw will do, or even a 1-0 loss with all to play for next week at the Bridge, where the Blues faithful will be augmented by yours truly, having got my ticket at last! In the other semi, should be a classic on Wednesday, as Real Madrid go to Bayern Munich. Golf now. Congrats to Brit Lee Westwood who won his first European Tour tournament for two years in the Malaysian Open with an overall 8 under score. Welcome back to the winners’ rostrum, mate!
