Enjoy, Respect, Upset.. Tourist Information Poster Causes Row. San Antonio Town Hall and the British Consulate are at the centre of a row involving local political groups and business leaders regarding the now aborted intention to release updated tourist advisory posters. One particularly contentious message proposed by the British Consulate and initially accepted for publication by San Antonio Mayor Pepita GutiĂŠrrez was that tourists should not walk home alone. This sparked outrage among San Antonio businesses and politicians in it giving a message that San Antonio was not a safe place to visit. This issue was compounded by some indecision and what has been widely criticised as poor handling escalating the issue to a level where it caught the attention of national Spanish media. The political opposition, the hotel sector in San Antonio and even their own political party criticised the information brochure called Respect and Enjoy, which was being distributed by the PP Conservative San Antonio Town Hall. The brochure warned about such things as balcony jumping, heavy drinking, noisy behaviour, drugs, walking home late at night alone, etc. Though trying to increase

awareness and safety, especially in the younger tourist sector, the Town Hall was criticised because the brochure could create a bad image of the town amongst family tourists. The plan by the Town Hall was to put up 300 posters and distribute17,000 brochures this summer with the help of the British Consul. The

British Consulate supports the brochure as they apparently use similar ones in young people destinations throughout Europe. However, this plan has now being changed, seemingly in response to the political pressure and criticism. It seems that the British Consul, when asked, was not happy to change certain warnings or remove some

phrases so the brochure is being withdrawn by the Town Hall so that their critics cannot claim they are damaging the image of Ibiza as a safe destination. The Consell Island Government is reportedly holding talks with the British Consul to try and rectify the damage they believe has been caused by the image portrayed in the brochure. In a press statement issued Tuesday the consulate said “The British Consulate in Ibiza fully respects the decision by San Antonio town hall to withdraw its tourist safety campaign and remains committed to working with all partners to ensure British nationals’ time on the island is trouble-free. The ‘Enjoy & Respect’ campaign was a joint campaign by the town hall and the consulate, in which the town hall had agreed to use all the messages proposed by the consulate. The town hall also funded and printed posters for distribution and display in holiday destinations. The messages in the campaign were drawn up in collaboration with leading British tour operators specialising in youth tourism. Similar campaigns are used

Travel & Tourism News Millions More!!! In May this year the tourists arriving on the island spent 14,5 million more euros than in the same period last year. Mainly thanks to the 25% increase in tourists staying in hotels and other registered tourist accommodation, the total of 207,7 million euros was reached. Average daily spending is 111€ a day, 25€ up on May 2011 but interestingly, tourists who choose private rentals apparently are on average spending less! UK Flight Connections. With an extra connection between Birmingham and Ibiza, offered by Flybe, coming on line this week, it was announced that there are now twenty three UK airports connected by direct flights to Ibiza this summer. Last year alone, 123,000 travellers flew to Ibiza from Birmingham and this figure will rise by 4% with the start of this new connection operating Tuesday, Fridays and Sundays.

French Air Controllers Delays. At least seventeen flights were delayed and three cancelled when Ibiza airport was affected by the French Air Controllers strike this week. Campaigning against the proposed budget for their department for 20152019, this action by the French caused disruption just as we enter the start of the peek summer season. San An—No More Big Clubs. Whilst approving new planning laws allowing the building of hypermarkets in the borough of San Antonio, the Consell Island Government reportedly rejected the clause which allowed the size of discos located in the centre of the Town to be increased. They also rejected the possibility of building large supermarkets by the coast in the Cala des Moro and Cala Gració areas of the town.

Alex the Turtle Flipping Exhausted A sharp eyed natural park ranger was picking up rubbish from the water near the Ses Bledes Island when he spotted a small turtle, the size of his hand, floating on the surface rather than diving for cover as a healthy animal would. Calling on the help of the San Antonio Aquarium Biologist, Elisa Langley, they collected the turtle, named Alex after the ranger’s grand son, and took him to the internationally recognised turtle rehabilitation centre based at the aquarium. There examinations showed that Alex was not

ill but shattered after his migratory swim. With a diet of vitamins and tasty fresh squid and tuna, Alex will be built up and eventually released to continue on his way. He is less than a year old, which is a critical time for turtles as only 5 to 10% of those born make it and go on to reach the age of twenty five, when life becomes relatively safer for this threatened species. Biologist Langley asked pleasure craft users to be more alert as this time of year there are lots of turtles passing through the Mediterranean Sea and call

in other British tourist destinations across southern Europe including Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria.” Simon Montague, Director of Communications at the British Embassy in Madrid, confirmed to us today that the campaign had been a joint initiative with UK tour operators specialising in the youth holiday market, and the San Antonio Town hall. In reply to our questions there was no indication of any consultation or involvement with the British community in Ibiza, nor an answer as to whether San Antonio was the only area of Ibiza identified for the campaign. Calls have been made for the resignation of the San Antonio mayor however she has stated clearly that she has no intention of stepping down.

Kebab Stab—Knife Frenzy. Shouting “I’m going to kill you” and wielding a big knife, a 49 year old man ran into a crowded Kebab house in Figueretes just as everyone was settling in to watch a World Cup match. The attacker tried to stab the owner of the business. Luckily the boss avoided the frenzied attack but the man then entered the kitchen area where he started throwing plates around before stabbing a chef in the neck. A waiter bravely interjected and was also injured trying to restrain the attacker. The have a go hero camerero received cuts to his hands—his injuries were said not to be too serious. In the panic, many customers fled the scene ‘without paying their bills’ according to the restaurant owner. Police and ambulances arrived to detain the man and treat the

injured. It is understood the attacker lives in Santa Eulalia, but was a regular customer who normally had a coffee, paid and went. None of the staff or other regular customers could understand any motivation or provocation for the attack. The man was detained over night and the next day the appeared before the judge, who released him on bail pending trial and more investigations. Party Boat Death—Update. The catamaran involved in the Party boat death last week was put out of service this week for a period of time after the Guardia Civil found some paper work out of order on the day the accident occurred. It appears that one of the many documents needed to sail had expired and needed to be renewed. This was later done by

Brit Tourist Dies On Rental Motorcycle. A 53 year old British man died after he crashed his rented motorcycle on the road to the Porroig cove at around 4.30pm. The man seemingly died instantly, whilst his 54 year old wife was left unconscious by the impact and needed urgent hospital treatment. This is the 13th road death this year in Ibiza and police are now investigating the causes of the accident and investigating if any other vehicle was involved. Illegal Taxi and Drugs. San Jose Police detained a French man for operating an illegal taxi service this week. As they stopped the vehicle, it is reported that the man hurriedly took a packet out of the glove compartment and put it down his trousers. Initially resisting the police body search, once officially detained the man was successfully registered by the officers who found that he was hiding small doses of illegal drugs ready for sale. The man was subsequently charged with illegal transport services, drug dealing and resisting arrest. San An Balconing Goes Viral . A young British apparently man won a 10 pound bet with his mates by jumping off the five storey high roof of a hotel in San Antonio into the hotel pool. Only narrowly managing to hit the water and not the concrete floor, as well as surprising other bathers who seemed oblivious as to what was about to descend into the pool, the jump was filmed and put on the web getting lots of hits. The authorities decried this action irresponsible and dangerously life threatening. University Fees Frozen. After two successive years of

increases, the Balearic Government has dropped plans to increase study fees at the Balearic University by 2,5% this year and decided to give the students and their parents a break by leaving the fees the same as last year. Only a few students get government subsidies to study in further education and most are fully or partially financed by themselves or their parents. Low Pensions. The average state pension on the islands is 915,65€ where as the average for Spain is 50 cents under a 1000€. The story is repeated with all types of pensions and Baleares is at the bottom of the list of autonomous regions of Spain in terms of pension provision. Madrid, the País Vasco and Galicia are seemingly the best areas in providing quality pensions. 245,000€ Loan. Ibiza Town council has borrowed 245,000€ which will be used next fiscal year to improve areas of the town. 84,000€ will be spent on improving pavements near the Sa Bodega school, 42,000€ on the second phase of the building of the Calle Atzaró road, 17,000€ on repairing the sinking parts of the Juan Carlos I road and 20,000€ on repairs to the Reina Sofia park as well as other less costly improvements and repairs throughout the town. 25,500€ will be invested in the police force, of which 17,000€ will be used to supply electronic pads to the force, so they can more easily and quickly report all the infringements of municipal by laws which they encounter. Port Pay Parking. This week saw the start of the paying to park scheme introduced in the old port area of Ibiza Town. Costing 2,4€ an hour, the tickets are purchased at the entrance to the port for the 145 parking spaces available.

UK Fraud Team In Spain Recovers £5million More than £5m of UK taxpayers’ money lost to benefit fraud in Spain is now being recovered by Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) investigators. The team in Madrid has investigated more than 1,250 cases of benefit fraud by British residents over the last five years. ‘Abroad fraud’ is now the fourth largest type of benefit fraud, up almost 90% in the last three years – and Spain is the top of the list, with 769 cases investigated last year. The top three benefit fraudsters in Spain who have been convicted so far this year had claimed some £217,000 between them. All three have now received jail sentences and been ordered to repay the money they stole. Janice Purdie, 62, from Hove, this month pleaded guilty to over £130,000 of benefit fraud and received a 12-month prison sentence. She failed to tell DWP that she owned a property in Spain and had numerous different bank accounts whilst she was fraudulently claiming Income Support, Pension Credit, Disability Living Allowance, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit over a nine-year period. Jimmy Rickner, 72, from Exeter, was this month jailed for six months for fraudulently claiming almost £50,000 of disability benefits and Pension Credit over eight years, when in fact he was living with his partner in one of two properties he owned in Spain. Thomas Wadham, 73, of Aylesbury, falsely claimed £37,000

of Housing Benefit and Pension Credit between 2007 and 2010 while he was living in Spain. He was sentenced to six months in jail in January and ordered to pay back all the money. The UK Government is taking more action to tackle abroad fraud by increasing the use of life certificates to stop fraudsters continuing to claim benefits when a claimant has died, and increasing data-sharing so foreign authorities tell the UK about overseas claimants. David Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, said: “Benefit fraud is wrong both at home and abroad, and fraudsters need to know that our investigators will look into cases wherever they are and that their benefits will be stopped. “We are toughening the rules to crack down on benefit cheats and recovering more money than ever - clawing back £5m in Spain.” Richard West, Head of DWP Fraud and Error Service, said: "This is a significant achievement for our team in Spain and will hopefully serve as a warning to benefit cheats no matter where they are in the world. “Fraudsters need to know that our investigators have the powers to track them down and that being overseas is no hiding place. We are determined to crack down on people who play the system, so that benefits only go to those who really need this help.” The DWP are urging people to report suspected benefit cheats on their Spanish hotline number 900 554 440.

Pirate Protest Put On Ice. The threat of a public transport protest faded away this week as the authorities met with the public transport sector. Giving the authorities a vote of confidence, the taxi and bus company representatives said they would review the situation in a month to allow time for the Consell Island Government and Town Halls around the island to take intensified action against pirate taxis and intrusion into their sector from illegal and unlicensed operators. Sant Carles Fire. 4200m2 of countryside was damaged near Sant Carles this week when stubble burning on a farm apparently got out of control. In Ibiza town the emergency services rushed to a flat when smoke bellowing from a pan, accidentally left on a stove, caused alarm. Also in the town, a discarded cigarette end is thought to have set fire to a palm tree located on a street near the marina causing a lot of smoke and needing action from the fire department. Ferry Office Robbery. Making off with at least 30,000€, thieves broke into the offices in the port of Ibiza of the two ferry companies operating services to the mainland. Not a hard job to pull off because there is supposedly no night time security and the offices are housed in a marquee until proper installations are built, the thieves seemingly spent several hours, late on Sunday night, rummaging through the contents of the safes of the two companies. They also broke into a car hire office located in the same marquee, but made off with nothing of value compared to the money they found at the ferry companies. Policeman Run Over. A policeman was knocked to the ground by a car as he tried to

stop it at a drink driving checkpoint, in the early hours of Monday morning. It was reported that the car, a Renault Clio, approached the checkpoint slowly but as the policeman came towards the car, the driver swerved knocking the officer over and accelerating off in the direction of San Antonio. The policeman was unhurt and put out an alert for the car. Passing taxis also radioed other taxis to look out for the car which was spotted entering San Antonio along the Avenida Dr Fleming. A police patrol car rushed to the location and blocked the road in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Instead of halting, the driver smashed his car into the police car and ran off on foot. The police in the vehicle were injured needing hospital treatment whilst other officers identified who the driver of the car was. However, though known to police, he still has not been located or has returned to where he lives in San Antonio since the incident happened. Embarrassment as Civic Agent’s Car Towed in San An A tow truck yesterday withdrew from a loading only parking space a civic agents' vehicle in Sant Antoni. This happened just a day before this monitoring service becomes operational. The mayor, Pepita Gutierrez, said yesterday at a press conference that the civic officers will patrol, from today, the most dangerous streets in town. The Town Hall confirmed that the civic agents' car was parked

in a loading and unloading area. As for payment for the tow, the Consistory explained that the contractor of this service will assume the cost and payment of the corresponding fine for parking in a prohibited area. The surveillance service that consists of seven "civic agents' for Sant Antoni, which has been endowed 115,000 euros, starts two weeks late. The Town Hall announced in April it would begin working on the 15th of June. However, in mid-June the coordinator for the security operation hadn't even been appointed. Specifically, the Town Hall announced on April 9th that seven civic officers (six vigilantes and a coordinator) would work from 15th of June until the 15th of September with the local police in Sant Antoni at night to control the most troubled areas of the municipality: the boardwalk, s'Era d'en Manyà to Soledat and the West End. The Consistory explained that these agents act as mediators, informants and controllers reporting antisocial behaviour at night. In the same way, they justified that outsourcing this service through a public competition responds to Royal Decree 20/2012 on Fiscal Stability, which prohibits the administration to hire new staff and increase staff. To perform this measurement, on April 26th it was approved (with voting against PSOE-Pacte and the non-PI) a modification of credit to allocate 115,000 euros from Sports to pay for this service.

Marina Playa Wow! We have found some hidden gems over the years but wow! And what a difference a year makes. For the benefit of locals the Marina Playa restaurant is the rooftop terrace above the Funky Lizard. For those from further afield it is on the road that runs by the sea joining San Antonio Town to San An Bay. For tourists just pop Marina Playa Ibiza into google maps and up it pops. Red carpets and velvet ropes always lead to good things and this is the first hint of something special that awaits you as you ascend the stairs into the nirvana that is the Marina Playa’s completely renovated rooftop terrace restaurant. The pool is surrounded by day beds, low lounge seating and dining tables with a central island bar and DJ booth. I’m not sure how often the DJ of the day plays there but here’s hoping their musical taste is always as good. His chill/reggae/pop was the perfect tempo for the late afternoon to sunset hours—hats off to some pretty clever mixing—and clue number two that Marina Playa’s recipe for success was not just about the food.

They cannot take credit for factor 3 though—that one is strictly God’s work—as you can see from the photos the elevated position gives you and unobstructed sunset view. We went along Thursday wanting to try their new Sushi menu. The 18 piece player pictured is just 15€ - I mean less than a euro a piece with a sunset view, in a beautiful lounge with a cool DJ—I know what you’re thinking, it can’t be Ibiza, but trust me it is. We shared the whole dinner and would recommend it as the way to go. The goat cheese salad was plenty big enough to share for at least two—delicious, the seafood spaghetti just one of many pasta dishes of which Marina Playa are justly proud, and the pizza was as artisan as we’ve ever eaten. Everything has that fresh factor that cannot be imitated. Our tip is to go when you have some time to savour every moment of the day, the food, the drink, the music, and God putting on the best cabaret there is. You won’t break the bank, you will leave feeling you’ve

had a very special afternoon/evening/night—best to work on the basis of night—you will not be in a hurry to leave.

Our own Sophia V checking out her future ride Modball Rally: San Antonio

"Sophia V The Modball event hit Ibiza last week. Modball is a non-profit charitable trust set up for young disadvantaged children to experience the world of motor sport. Founded in 2006, the Modball Rally has toured through Europe, America and Australia. I took photographs of the amazing cars, to name a few: Maserati, Porsches, Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s and more, also a three wheeler all the way from Norway! I also had the pleasure of interviewing some of the drivers, the majority of them having travelled through London, Paris, Lyon, Barcelona, Valencia and arriving in Ibiza only hours before. I also attended the awards party at Ocean Beach Club, which had a great, lively atmosphere as usual.

Modball 2014 London to Ibiza

"Tom Berry Wednesday night saw the arrival of Modball Europe 2014 to San Antonio port. Modball is a rally for modified cars. Cars need at least two modifications to be eligible to enter, and we don’t mean Vauxhall Nova's with trays glued on the roof, we are talking modified super-cars. Modball encourages its entrants to be as creative as possible with their cars and this year was no disappointment. Having started their journey in Pall Mall's Waterloo Place in London on the 20th June the mod-ballers have somehow covered 2000 miles on the way down through Paris, Barcelona and to Denia for the ferry across

to Ibiza. Obliged to participate in events along the way, including a lap of the Ricardo Tormo race track in Valencia and the odd party or two. Amongst the 150 entrants were modified Porsche 996's, Nissan GTR's, Audi R8's and Lamborghini Gallardo's and of course the Morgan three wheeler which also made it all the way to Ibiza. The star car was maybe the modified project Audi R8 V10 spyder belonging to 'Bradley Allan'. The finish line for the rally was in San Antonio Harbour. Later the modballers continued the tradition of 'drive all day . . .party all night', with a trip directly to Space for the evening to see 'Ibiza Calling'. The following day at midday the mod-ballers retrieved their vehicles and proceeded through the streets of San Antonio to Ocean Beach Club for an awards ceremony and to continue the celebrations on into the night again. We caught up with some of the mod-ballers at ocean beach for the after-party, who described the event as 'the best six days of their lives'. The Modball 2015 route was announced as London, Paris, Milan, Maranello (Lamborghini & Ferrari Factory), Rome, Monaco, Paul Ricard Track and finish in Barcelona, who's up for it?

Perhaps unsurprisingly the Modball Rally was a popular assignment at the Ibizan office leaving us with more copy than we can print. . We’ll post more of the cars and interviews on our website www.theibizan.com

Lily Allen, The Ibiza Years “Hello Ibiza! I used to work here as a teenager, for Plastik!” "Nick Gibbs

The teeming Ibiza Rocks crowd let out an almighty cheer to Lily Allen’s opening announcement as she comes on stage to begin her first Ibiza gig. Coincidentally, one of the two Plastik owners was standing a few metres away from me with a wry smile on his face. I sidle over, surprised that someone who’s usually so PR savvy (two years ago he got a story in the Mail on Sunday that David Cameron had been partying in Plastik) had never shared this. ‘What’s that all about?” As a result, I’m now sitting with Plastik co-owner Colin Butts at Cebo, me with my morning after coffee, teetotal Colin with, well just a coffee. Dictaphone in hand I’m intrigued to know more. First of all, why is such an

obvious PR opportunity something he’d never shared? “I’ve a lot of time for Lily and it always seemed a bit naff to try and capitalize on her working at Plastik, especially as she only did so for a week or two anyway.”

"It

turns out there’s a lot more to the story than Lily just randomly being in Ibiza and applying for a job like most workers. Novelist and scriptwriter Colin’s first novel was the infamous bestseller about holiday reps in Ibiza, Is Harry on the Boat? and it was via this that he first met the young Lily Allen. “Is Harry on the Boat? had been out for a couple of years and I’d just been punting around a film script. I got a call from my publisher saying they had interest

from a company called Ruby Films and that Sky wanted to make it into a film and TV series. It wasn’t until later I discovered it was the 15 year-old daughter of Ruby Film’s boss Alison Owen who had read it, loved it and told her mum she should option it. That 15 yearold was Lily so in a way, the very reason I’m sitting here now and living in Ibiza is partly due to her.”

"The film was made in 2000 and it was then that Colin

first met her. “I’ve kept a diary for nearly 20 years now and my diary entry for that day, October 18th 2000, reads, ‘…met Keith Allen’s daughter Lily who really is the most precocious girl, in a nice, 15 going on 25 way, that I’ve ever encountered.’ She just had something about her, mature way beyond her years. I’m sure a lot of that was to do with having a dad with maturity way below his years!”

"Colin

told me more about her time here during that first meet. Lily was in Ibiza for a good part of the filming, which took place in October 2000. Any fans of the film (which gave Danny Dyer his first lead role) can spot her in different scenes, the clearest

being dancing with Will Mellor when his character has taken his first pill. Colin got to know here reasonably well during filming. “The season was longer then so clubs and bars were still open in October. She was out partying most nights with the cast and crew, who all loved her - everyone forgot she was 15. She was very streetwise. Very selfassured with the same dry, doesn’t suffer fools, takes-noprisoners attitude and sense of humour she has now.” ~

"They kept in touch and Lily

came back over in 2001 with her sister Sarah. Colin saw Lily a few times but on August 1st, received a call from a sobbing and

“I asked her if she fancied doing some vocals for a track we were doing— I remembered her saying something about being a singer”

distressed Lily who was stranded on the other side of the island. “She didn’t have any money, said she couldn’t get in touch with her mum or dad and had lost her sister who was off partying. I went and picked her up and on the way back she confided in me that she really wanted to stay in Ibiza for the summer but had no money, no job and nowhere to stay. I made a few phone calls but rather than just give her a bit of cash I asked her if she fancied doing some vocals for a track we were doing— I remembered her

with Alex Ellenger (now Eden resident and co-owner of Viva). There was a track out at the time by Members of Mayday that Judge Jules played the previous Sunday. We were having a laugh with him, saying it was exactly the same melody as Echo Beach by Martha & the Muffins so Alex and I had half a day in the studio putting the Echo Beach guitar over the top and doing a bit of a mash up to prove it. We never intended putting vocals on top, it was more a way of letting Lily have some money and feeling like she’d earned it, rather than just giving her a

“Lily found herself in a not entirely clean, halffinished toilet, which doubled-up as a vocal booth” she was saying she had a sore throat. She was also mumbling something about having a record company interested in her songs and that she was probably gonna get a deal soon. I’m pretty sure I put my arm around her shoulder in a patronising, heard-it-allbefore-of-course-you-will kind of way. I might have even patted her on the head and gone ‘therethere’ as I gave her the money,” laughs Colin. “Little did I

At the time Plastik was more of a record shop but was still selling club tickets so she got a job doing

that. However, she only did it for a week or so – she was enjoying partying too much and I think it’s already fairly welldocumented how she supported herself for the last few weeks she was here.”

What came next? Lily Allen's early releases were songs with a thick Cockney accent against retro production styles. Her music was used as part of an exhibition at the British Library tracing the history of Cockney English. Her songs featured ska influences, particularly on her on second single, "LDN". Lily has said she cringes now when listening to tracks from the first album “Alright, Still”, as it reminds her that she was a "sort of over-excitable teenager who desperately wanted attention" when she

wrote it. Wanting to move on from the retro sound that many other artists had adapted since her debut, Allen ventured in a new direction sonically and lyrically in her second studio album, “It's Not Me, It's You”. The first single from the album, “The Fear” is an electropop track denouncing consumerism. Her new music direction and willingness to write lyrics that tackled less-common subjects were lauded by critics, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Lily Allen @ Ibiza Rocks 2014 by Skimal

Seems I can’t deny, some days just don’t feel right, seems I feel much better,

At night

Lily Allen Ibiza Rocks Claire B Lily Allen played her first gig on the island at Ibiza Rocks last week. However, she’s no stranger to the island, staying here as a 15 year old after a family holiday, “working for this record shop called Plastic Fantastic and selling E's”, as she proudly told us at the beginning of her show. Lily was supported by Bipolar Sunshine, the solo project of Manchester-based musician Adio Marchant, formerly of Kid British fame. Live he plays with a full backing band: keyboard player (who also plays guitar on some songs), bassist and drummer. They played what could best be described as sunshine music. Their set was full of original poppy, funky, danceable tunes, which were perfect for a warm, breezy, Ibizan night as the sun went down. When the keyboard player switched to guitar, the pace quickened and they rocked it up a bit. The biog on Facebook says: “Bipolar Sunshine is based on a surreal world where anything is possible, the stranger the better as long as it’s done with an artistic approach. A Home for the defeated romantic, the passionately curious but in the mist of all still can see the bright side to everything.” I rather like that ethos and it was exemplified by the last song in their set, which was entitled ‘Love more worry less’, which was a great sentiment to leave us with. The last time I saw Lily Allen was at a summer festival on Clapham Common in 2006, just as her musical

career was starting to take off and she was still wearing her trademark hoodie, prom dress and trainers onstage. I was looking forward to see her perform again all these years later and in the relatively intimate setting of Ibiza Rocks. She didn’t disappoint. Her backing band took their places on the stage first, and then Lily appeared, launching into ‘LDN’ to great applause from the expectant crowd. She looked fantastic, wearing a shimmery green cut-off bustier and a bright orange pencil skirt with full-length zip at the back and killer heels, with her hair plaited and pinned up. Next up was ‘F**K You’, which got everybody singing along. For recent single ‘Hard Out Here’, Lily was joined onstage by four dancers clad in very short denim shorts, who shook their booty’s ferociously to the tongue-in-cheek song, which is making a statement about the objectification of women in the music business (see the link to the video clip at the end). Leaving the stage for a quick costume change whilst the dancers entertained us, she reappeared in another glamorous figure-hugging outfit. For the rest of the show she happily mixed early singles and songs from her first two albums with songs from the recent album, including ‘Everyone's At It’, ‘Sheezus’ and ‘Bass Like Home’, her unofficial World Cup song. The backdrop images were hilarious, with babies’ feeding bottles being a recurring image: female dancers with dog’s heads trapped dancing inside them, and later the teats on the bottles transformed into nipples, oozing milk. As in her lyrics, Lily draws on things that are part of her life and her outlook. The dancers appeared intermittently, as they did for the latter part of ‘Smile’, which veered off into a frenzy of drum and bass.

She had great stage presence. She looked stylish (in stark contrast to her stage attire in the early days of her career) and commanded the stage as she happily danced around it. There was also a bit of banter as she introduced the songs, often followed by a bit of giggling, as before ‘22’ when she told us that she’d written it when she was younger, saying “don’t believe it, it’s wrong”. ‘L8 CMMR’ was dedicated to her husband who she said was “wicked in bed”. Lily tells it as it is, both in her lyrics and onstage, which is refreshingly honest and has a dash of quirkiness, sadly lacking in many artists these days. Not long after, she ditched her heels and spent the rest of the gig dancing around barefoot. For some of the slower songs she sat at the front of the stage, which was probably an attempt to rest from the heat of the night but was endearing to watch. Her delivery of Keane’s ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ was beautiful and haunting and the crowd loved it. She ended with ‘The Fear’, bade us farewell and curtseyed before leaving the stage. There was no encore, but she’d been onstage for well over an hour and the crowd was happy with what they’d had. She put on a great performance giving us material spanning her career and all the big hits: it was slick, entertaining and the crowd loved her. Another great night at Ibiza Rocks with two acts that complimented each other perfectly. Videos: Bipolar Sunshine:

The Ibiza Sun, Thursday 3rd July 2014, Issue 741 www.theibizan.com

Hardwell I am hardwell Ushuaia Nick Gibbs Robbert van de Corput is the 26 year old superstar DJ known to the world as Hardwell. Bit of useless trivia for you—Van de Corput translates from Latin/Dutch to Hardwell. The name change was the first of many a strategic decision taken in conjunction with his parent managers (in his early playing days they had to accompany him as he was too young to be allowed into clubs alone) in the bid for world domination, or at least as far towards world domination as the DJ can hope to achieve. In 2013 he became the youngest ever winner of the coveted DJ Magazine DJ of the year award. Hardwell hails from the fountain of Dutch DJs that has brought us such names as Corstein, Buuren and Tiesto, the latter from his home town. OK so that’s the press pack bio but I like to ask around for people’s opinions/ questions/reactions prior to an interview. In Hardwell’s case you can split it into two. Though his well may runneth over in professional accolades and a huge fan base (approaching 6 million on facebook—that’s more than the population of Scotland for Cliff’s sake) his name still does not have the same level of recognition as some of his senior 1st generation A-listers. Of the half that did know of him he clearly carries a very high standing—a general consensus that he justified his world number 1 status. The exception to the yes/no division in awareness was amongst his countrymen. The Dutch all know him, young and old, whether into the whole edm world or not. In the Dutch community the professional respect has an additional layer of warmth of feeling that comes from a national pride, and also as I found out something of a maternal pride, that ‘our boy did good’. I asked him if he sensed that feeling.

H: Definitely I sense it. I appreciate it. Generally I think the Dutch people are very proud of what happened to Dance Music in Holland, especially when we have people like Tiesto, Armand Van Buuren, Ferry Corstein. Dutch DJs were dominating the scene along with the English guys back in the day and yes I'm really proud of what I've achieved as well. It's great to hear you have a lot of Dutch people reading this.

Hardwell invites his PR manager to try some Bitterballen, one of a range of Dutch delicacies I have taken along in a picnic hamper lovingly prepared by San Antonio's very much Dutch bar Tulp. I'm starting to pity whoever will be transcribing the interview as a rummage further into the hamper is greeted with happy cries of Herring (ok that one was easy) Frikandel Speciaal, and -you know what you'll just have to take my

word for it—a lot of Dutch food names that I cannot hope to pronounce let alone spell. With impeccable manners I am asked to be sure and pass on my thanks to Tulp. It was when talking with Paul, Diana, and a table of Dutch clients at Tulp that the maternal side of their affection came out. To be frank many of those present were not people you would expect to be keeping up with the cutting edge of what's hot in electronic dance music, but it turns out they all fell for him as a rather cute 15 year old when he appeared on a major Dutch television programme.

H: Ah yes, you mean, “de wereld draait door” (the world turns around). I had my first record when I was 14 and they asked me to appear on the programme. It is like a panel show with a studio audience and they feature anything that is new. They invited me on to talk about it, and asked me “what is your biggest dream?”. You know since Tiesto was my role model, and he became world DJ number 1 in 2001 just at the same time as the interview. I said “I want to become world number 1 DJ as well” and everybody, the audience and the guests on the panel, started laughing, they all thought it was really funny at the time, but now (he says this with a big smile on his face) it's like fuck you all. Well I guess enough of this nostalgia, we'd best get on with the here and now. The Ushuaia residency, do you prefer outdoor?

H: Yeah, I'm a real festival kind of guy, I definitely prefer outdoor events. On the ‘I am Hardwell’ world tour dates around 40% of them were outside. What can I say, when you are in Ibiza for the summer season you want to be partying outside, you don't want to be in some dark smelly club, you want to be looking at the water, whether it's the beach or a pool, that's what Ibiza is about man. Besides Ushuaia is an amazing club technically—the sound system, the lighting, it's perfect for me. When they asked me to do a residency here I was really honoured. I’m a big fan of the island. The people here are really educated musically, they know what I'm playing, what I’m about, I really like that about Ibiza. Your set starts quite early at 9pm, does that effect your set? Are people ready to party?

H: For me the timing is perfect, but it is why I play for 3 hours you know. I want to start in the daytime and end in the night time, I think every DJ would love that idea. I don't think a lot of DJs my age play 3 hour sets. The new generation want to play an hour, hour and a half, and bang out the hit records then they're done. I want to take the opportunity to take it back to the way it used to be, to take people with me on a musical journey and give them the best time possible. How is the studio album coming along—your first right?

H: Yes that's right. It's about 60% finished , I have like 10/11 sketches. I'm really happy with those sketches now (sorry but it would just seem wrong to correct a

Dutchman's English) . Maybe I'll make 3 or 4 more then I'll pick my favourite 10 or 11 for release. It will be after the summer. I'm producing while on the road so perhaps end of July or August. And Revealed 4 (Hartwell's mix compilation series), are you happy with it's reception and sales? You have just returned from Vegas, how is it doing in the States? H: I'm on Revealed 5 now (I hang head in shame—damn you Wikipedia!). The sales have been just great. The

best selling mix album ever. It is number 5 now on iTunes worldwide on the album chart.

I don't suppose 5 is good enough is it? Hartwell's Dad laughs. Hardwell himself seems to take the question somewhat more seriously. H: It's amazing, I'm competing with Ed Sheeran and

Coldplay at this point so I couldn't be happier. I have the biggest dance album on the chart, I'm above all the artist albums of all the other EDM guys. Do you think you'll have a chance to see Ibiza?

H: This week and next I'm flying in and out but then for the rest of the season I'll be living on the island as a base. I've always flown in and out before. I've heard so many great stories about Ibiza so I can't wait to actually be on the island. OK well if you are spending some time here you might like this .. I give Hardwell a map I cobbled together with the patrons at Tulp of the island's Dutch owned businesses. Though we would never consider recommending a Brit to all the Brit-bars in Ibiza as a cultural introduction to the island, the rather sparser Dutch community seems to justify the Ibiza-Oranje map.

H: Ah that's great, (to his father) Look it says here there be Frikandel ha ha Yes that's Tulp

H: Well please be sure to thank them (again impeccable manners, I can't believe he really knew that ‘Fuck‘ is considered a strong profanity) What about Football, have you been watching? Do you fancy Holland's chances?

H: Yes I watched the match yesterday. It wasn't a great match but we won. You know you're talking to an Englishman right?

H: Ha ha, yes I'm sorry about that. I loved the match against Spain. Fantastic. I'm not a huge soccer fan, but when Holland are playing I love to watch. The vibe in Holland is great. I think we have a good chance. Thank you for talking to us.

H: Thank you, and thank you for the food, everyone will freak out back stage. Hardwell went off to do whatever it is superstars do before going on stage, probably drinking unicorn milk in between more have-to-be-done interviews. I had a meander through Ushuaia. The crowd consisted of a starkly contrasting mix of people, some carrying on with a party that obviously started many hours earlier on the beach, and then couples, especially girls, who

Page 13

were dressed to impress with implausibly perfect make up for the heat of the day and heels that may give them an advantage in a view over the crowd but would be as practical for dancing as filling your pockets with cement. The atmosphere was much more that of a gig than a club with expectation rising as the sun dropped lower in the sky - but after that you’ll have to read the review of another writer. I could almost smell the ink of the Diario’s printing press as it fired up for the night— though to be fair it could have just as easily been poppers. Either way I had a paper to finish. Judging by the photo below I missed quite a show—and I think the photo perfectly represents exactly what you would expect of a Hardwell set—here is a DJ playing right at

the top of their game. Essential have a great review here

Âhttp://www.essentialibiza.com/news/he-ishardwell.asp Hardwell is a young man who clearly takes his work very seriously. Nothing wrong with that. The world would surely be a better place with a few more Hardwells and a few less Feckless. He has huge drive and focus on becoming the best in every respect. His work output in production and live performance is prodigious. Again who can fault such drive and ambition. Whether ‘the best’ can be best achieved by striving to get to the number 1 position in various lists is a differ-

ent question, a good philosophical one for the stoned and feckless perhaps. I am Hardwell. I hope that while living in Ibiza he gets some opportunity to wake up and say ‘I am Robbert’. Hardwell is playing Ushuaia every Tuesday until August 26th. General tickets are priced 50/55€. The party starts at 5pm, Hardwell starts a 3 hour set at 9pm. Links are live in the online edition.

Flower Power Despite just a couple of minor “technical issues” the Cala Longa Flower Power Night happening was a real success. The decorated lorry with DJ Andy Wilson on board passed through the very busy village followed by an increasing crowd of enthusiastic ravers out to enjoy themselves, at times bringing the traffic to a halt. Whistles, tambourines, drums and the like were the order of the evening creating quite a spectacle. The party eventually finished on the beach but had to finish just after midnight when the boys in blue asked for the music to be turned off. (We still can’t understand why visitors aren’t allowed to have a bit of noisy fun after twelve). The next Viva Cala Llonga event is a Dance Spectacular taking place on Monday 28th July. More info nearer the date. These extra events have meant that car park-

ing became a bit of a problem, but this has now been over-come. If you are driving down towards the beach area, turn right in front of Restaurant La Vella, across from Bar La Cantina, and after about 50mtrs on the right there’s a large “Free” parking facility. Low Cost Flight Warning Now that one of the low cost carriers has allowed an extra bag in the cabin there is a shortage of room in the overhead lockers, so they have introduced a maximum number of bags on board system. If you happen to be at the end of the boarding queue they may ask you to put your cabin bag into the hold, at no cost to you. Please be aware that unless you lock it any valuables in it that may somehow disappear will not be covered under the T’s and C’s of your travel insurance policy. So if you find yourself in that situation please remove any valuables and documents, carry a spare lock and key, plus perhaps a tie on label, as it won’t have an identification tag on it. This may seem a lot of trouble but it’s better than your bag or its contents disappearing as happened to the family of a friend of ours recently. Letter From Juan

"Juan It is, for me, that time of year that as a small child I used looked forward to but as a mature adult I could do without. Yes my birthday has come around again and it only seems like last week that I had the last one. But as the old fogies keep pointing out to me it is better than the alternative. As a consequence I am feeling slightly jaded as it has been one of these weeks when I only managed one day when I was not out and about wining and dining, thank goodness for Sunday. One of the things I did was to go and see the cars crossing the line in the Modball Rally. Somewhat bizarre really, a variety of cars and a couple of vans and they arrived on Tuesday had a “good night” then lined the cars up at the end of San Antonio harbour and drove down along the sea front and crossed the finishing line. But I suppose the craziness is

part of the fun of competing in it. There were representatives from all over Europe and the eventual winner was from Scotland. It reminded me of the Monte Carlo Rally when all sorts of cars would start from all parts of the UK and Europe and race to Monte Carlo. To move on to a more serious note I heard that a young man had been killed and his girl friend seriously injured when their bike went off the edge and plunged down a steep slope. It therefore seems appropriate to remind you these roads are extremely dangerous at this time of year. There are many people who are driving scooters or car on what to them is the “wrong side of the road” so tend to look the wrong way at junctions. The driving customs in Spain are different and as a result if a Spaniard is driving round a roundabout they always adopt the inside position even if they are going all the way round the roundabout and back the way they came. Also please don’t get carried away trying to give your passenger a little scare or just trying to see how fast you can take the corners. Then even if you are driving sensibly remember what my old driving instruc-

tor used to say “always expect the unexpected”, bikes coming up on your inside, cars suddenly turning off across the road in front of you or if you are on a minor road and the car coming up on the main road is signalling to turn off into your junction and doesn’t! Finally keep within the speed limits it is better to arrive a few minutes late than never to arrive at all. Have a safe and sunny week, yours, Juan. View From The Pew

"Bob the Ex-Vicar When I arrived on Ibiza 2 weeks ago, I came on a flight from East Midlands airport. Before we took off, we started to go through the normal Routine of a Pre-flight Safety Instructions and Demonstration from the stewardesses. Nowadays it appears to be routine as well that they have to ask everybody to be quiet. On our flight it took three times of asking by the stewardess for the passengers to be quiet, and the final one with the proviso that as it is a law that every airline has to abide by, we would not be able to take off until completing it in silence. There was still a group of men old enough to have known better at the back who were not completely quiet. The noise levels were high for the whole flight, and on landing in Ibiza the same people got up before the plane stopped taxiing and the seat belt sign went off. Again the stewardess asked everyone to sit down until the seat belt sign was switched off. Nobody sat down again. They left the seat belt sign on for 3 minutes more and we were waiting to disembark for at least another 5 minutes after that. Some of the more loud-mouthed people were moaning about not disembarking, and so I said to

one of them standing above me in a fairly loud voice “If you would sit down as asked, then we would all get off more quickly.” All that comment received was a bit of puerile abuse, partly about my “crocodile Dundee hat”! A vicar’s wife I know also had a loud-mouth behind her on her flight who argued with an air steward who even threatened him with calling the police when they landed if he did not sit down for the landing. His retort was “No you wouldn’t”! He of course had his gaggle of giggling girls to play to! The amazing thing is that all these people who have no respect for authority and blatantly disobey the rules will often be the first to howl “foul” when there is an infringement at a football match. How is it that these people don’t realize that rules are made for our benefit! God gave the 10 Commandments as guidelines in order to get the most out of life, just as the airline rules are there for our safety and rules of football and other sports have been devised for players to get the best out of the game. And we can see from what has happened on the football pitch during this World Cup what happens when people flagrantly disobey the rules. I dread to think what will happen when a plane-load of people who can’t be bothered to listen to the Safety Demonstration have to make an emergency evacuation. I hope and pray it doesn’t happen and I hope that we will all realize that God-given guidelines for life are not a hindrance to us enjoying life but are actually there to help us get the best out of life. It’s Good To Talk

"Kate Stillman Dear Ibiza Counseling We have been living here for ages (10years) and enjoy a good life style, my husband is able to work remotely and so we are not dependant on the island to sustain us which I know is difficult in the winter. However my husband has just found out he is going o be made redundant and the contract is up on our house after 10 years so I am in a major panic. The combination of the two situations has even made us consider moving back to the UK so we don’t have to compromise our standard of living. I am in such dilemmas the children might have to move school and we might not be able to enjoy all the things we have done in the past. My husband says we will be OK for a year with his redundancy but what happens then? All the unknowns are really difficult for me. SW. Dear SW Thank you for your e mail and I am sorry to hear that you are finding yourselves potentially in a different financial situation from what you are used to. Unknowns can be a challenge but I wonder what it is specifically about these unknowns that you are finding difficult? Is it the possible shift in life style and access to a certain way of living that you might not be able to have any more, what would it be like to contemplate life on Ibiza in a different way, does it necessarily need to be a negative? Or is it the thought of moving back to the UK and all the upheaval that will cause? Its important to try and really process what is going on for you on an emotional level, to unpack exactly where the discomfort lies. What are the compromises you are prepared to make in terms of your standard of living, your home and the children’s school-

Philadelphus Flower ing? It is often the case that the changes we most fear unfold to be the ones that can create the most benefit long term. Your husband seems confident that not much will change in the next year so maybe you can use this time to re-evaluate and prioritize the things that are most important to you, that way you will begin to see a picture of how the future could look. All the best with your plans for the future Warm regards Kate For contact see my advert in local services.

Health Matters

"Kevin Russell Sugar, not so nice: Fat was always considered public health enemy number one in our diet but according to the World Health Organisation we need to be more aware of how much sugar we consume. WHO recently closed a public consultation, which when published will give clear guidelines on our sugar intake. More accurately what they are concerned about is the amount of ‘free sugar’ in our diets. Free sugar refers to sugars (or carbohydrates) added to foods in the cooking or processing stages or sugar that is present in honey or fruit juices. Sugars in the form of carbohydrates are naturally present in most foods, including unrefined foods such as brown rice. The chemical composition of these carbohydrates means it takes the body longer to break them down and are hence better for us. Food manufacturers add free sugars, which include glucose, fructose and sucrose, to make food more palatable, preserve them longer or give them a certain texture. Many foods that are low or 0% fat have added sugar to replace the taste or consistency lost when removing the fat, yoghurt is a good example of this. Other foods that have surprisingly high sugar content include: fizzy drinks, pre-cooked tomato or curry sauces, mayon-

naise, water drinks and even bread. This easy availability is partly to blame for the obesity crisis and continuing rise in diabetes. Other illnesses include fatty liver disease and heart disease as a result of obesity. But it’s not so easy to curb our sugar intake. Some studies have shown that children, even newborns have a preference for sweet flavours. Sugar can also boost our mood as it is involved in the release of serotonin, a hormone that makes us feel happy. A Yale University study also showed that whilst foods containing glucose made us feel full, eating foods containing fructose did not. So with no switch off we are more prone to over-eating when we eat foods with fructose. Fructose is found in many soft drinks and processed foods. All sugars are broken down to glucose or fructose by the liver and either used or stored as glycogen or fat. At present 70g and 50g of sugar are recommended for men and women respectively based on an intake of 10% of calorie intake. 50grams is the equivalent of 2 cans of a carbonated drink. So what can we do about it? The first step is to be aware of the amount of sugar we eat. On the food label ‘carbohydrate, of which sugars’ (hidratos de carbono, de los cuales azucares) tells us how much sugar a food contains. Anything with more than 15% is high and less than 5% is low. WHO recommends 5% as the maximum amount of calories gained by sugars although this is generally seen as a difficult target to meet. ARIES - Princess of Disks You'd be wise to sit out a stalemate situation this week. You don't need to give ground, just wait and see what others offer before making any decisive move. Life will be similar to a game of chess so think carefully about your next move. If you're undecided then wait awhile, especially if there are financial implications to any changes. TAURUS - The Fool You're inclined to be uncharacteristically impulsive and are about to make, what associates consider, a rash move; but is it? You’ve got a hunch regarding a business opportunity and are willing to take the risks involved. This isn't about being a team player; it's about independent and visionary thinking, which inspires those around you to think outside the box. GEMINI - Justice Weigh up the facts presented to you this week; especially if it involves any big changes. Sure, there are pros and cons but what’s your intuition telling you? Others have their own agenda and emotionally you are being pulled this way and that. Keep it simple; what's best for long term prospects and what brings you a more balanced lifestyle? CANCER - The Lovers Great week for getting along with just about anyone, as you're in the mood for love. The Lovers also presents us with a choice; between two people, two jobs, two career options, two...well; you get the picture. You’re being asked to make this choice from your heart, therefore it’s important to connect with your feelings and make your decision intuitively. LEO - Prince of Disks You're thinking long term financial investments; so it would be wise to seek out an expert opinion before committing yourself fully. Make sure everyone involved is up to carrying through the task, especially if it requires you handing over substantial amounts of money. Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate, but make sure it's worth it in the long run. VIRGO - Four of Cups Weigh up opportunities this week as there's a few to choose from both personally and professionally. However, delay any decision on making a firm commitment as there may be another opportunity on the horizon; one you might like even better. Romantically, if you're single and have kissed a lot of frogs recently, the signs are good to meet your Prince/ Princess. LIBRA - Princess of Swords You want to get to the bottom of something that's been troubling your thoughts and are determined to root out the truth even if it means upsetting yourself or the feelings of those you feel a close affinity too. You can only hope they're telling the truth otherwise you'll be led up the garden path for many months to come. SCORPIO - Six of Disks Successful week ahead as you are rewarded for past efforts with some kind of bonus and if you continue to throw your energy into the task then further rewards await. For some, expect some kind of promotion or success in in a job interview. Friends, love ones and associates are likely to be generous if you need some financial help. SAGITTARIUS - Five of Swords It may be difficult for you to keep a lid on your temper as you discover what’s been going on behind your back. You’ll be pretty upset by the underhanded dealings of others as you are usually a good judge of character. Sometimes you trust unconditionally only to find you’ve been hoodwinked by a charming attitude. Time to wise up! CAPRICORN - Four of Swords Take time out to contemplate your navel and take steps to restore depleted your energy. Meditation or alone time may be a necessity so don't waste time with the so called "in crowd". Set yourself apart, especially if in the negotiation phase of an important deal. Others can't add to your perfect plan so don't bother asking for second opinions. AQUARIUS - Three of Cups A week to let your hedonistic side rule. You want fun and lots of it. The best way to ensure this happens is to spend time with those who make you happy. If you've not caught up with good friends lately, now's the time to reach out. This card signals abundant times, socially, financially and career wise through networking opportunities. PISCES - Five of Wands Emotionally, it's time to grips over the actions of a close associate that’s been troubling you for some time. If a friendship, relationship or business association is troublesome; communication's the key to sorting the problem. Nothing’s wrong with sitting ‘round a table with a cuppa, vino or beer to talk things through and sort it out. Or agree to disagree.

where they will do very well in a sunny spot. They can grow to small trees if left untended and are loved for the display of pure white flowers that are produced in May and June. It is the scent that really makes this plant so special as if produces a wonderful aroma not unlike the flowers of citrus fruits that grow so well in Ibiza. They have been given the common name of mock orange for this very reason. There are about 80 different types of Philadelphus which can be found growing in the mountains from China to the Americas as well as in northern Europe and the countries on the north side of the Mediterranean. Even thought they prefer full sun they will tolerate some shade and the Philadelphus Coronus Aureus which has a golden leaf will tolerate quite shaded spot and in fact are used to brighten up a dull shady corner with their bright leaves. Philadelphus need to be pruned by cutting the shoots that have flowered back down to strong new shoots lower down the branch. It is also a good idea to cut some weaker branches to the base of the shrub but again they should

only be cut to where there are fresh new shoots coming from the branch to be cut. It is not uncommon to find a Philadelphus that has become overgrown and looking rather sad so it is possible to instigate a program to renovate them. One should cut some of the larger older branches right down to the base of the plant to encourage new growth from the base. In the following year the rest of the older branches can be cut back which will mean the plant can be pruned normally in the subsequent years. A good mulch should be applied around the base of the plant after such pruning. It is possible to under plant some of the smaller varieties with any number of herbaceous plants that will sit nicely under the arching branches which can create a spectacular effect as will growing climbers such as Clematis through them. These shrubs put some people off cultivating them because pruning can seem a little complicated but once the technique has been mastered the effort will be worth while as the scent will be strongest at dusk just at the best time of the day to have a cooling drink at the end of the day.

Soon be time to change me tune and diversify, Been a long time on me own, not that I am shy, P’raps I’m short of patience other’s needs to fill? Nuff to pay for on me desk, someone else’s bill Could upset me balance, I worked hard for this, Still might be nice if I had human lips to kiss, As things stand, kiss with tongues every single day, Alsatian and little dog’s – not a normal way To have a relationship but do I really mind? No, not on yer Nelly! main thing is – BE KIND ! Still I’ve shouldered far too much for one little bod, So I’m reconsidering my life on me tod, Meanwhile ´til I reach blank page, furniture to sell, Antique wardrobes, chests, clocks chiming deathly bell, Pottery and china, vases, nuts and bolts, Overlade garage, I might need smelling salts To help clear this clutter of ancestral junk, Seven years I’ve been at it, sometimes nearly sunk, Under weight of tears and grief, found meself waylaid, Soon be time to sign our contract and then just get paid! What a life I will have then tootling on the road Find a match made in Heaven for a lighter load, Genius to fathom plumbing or dodgy exhaust, Someone strong to seal edges where crowbar forced, Repair rear reflector, screw on that bike rack, Touching up me paintwork, filling in the crack, Seems I really want a sherper or a handyman, Who won’t cause me any bother and just fix me van! Meanwhile here in Blighty immersed in practicals, Looms a deeper message through etherials, Yesterday I spied it drenched in pouring rain, Dazzling, brightly shining way beyond all pain, Perfect arch of glory with every single hue Told me there’s a pot of gold and now that it’s due, All I say is “Thank you” and take a deep bow, Somewhere over the rainbow, there’s a holy cow, Full of joy and laughter, wild eccentricity, Grandmother is waving at me, yelling “Just Be Free!” Luv doris, the new age guru x Âwww.dorisandfriends.com doristlc@hotmail.com

Sport from back page could end in “ova” with 5 already through! Methinks the Eastern European ladies are taking over the Women's Tour! In Cycling, everybody seems to be getting Tour de France fever as the event starts in Leeds on Saturday and I await ongoing reports from my spy-in-thecamp Jules C for next week's report. Let's hope Chris Froome can repeat his heroics of last year and make it 3 English wins in a row. However, not a very happy bunny from Scotland, David Millar, as, hoping to be going for his 13th and final TdF before retirement, he found out, only yesterday, that he had been dropped from his Garmin-Sharp team, thereby joining Sir Bradley Wiggins on the sidelines. Golf now, and congrats to Englishman Justin Rose as he won his 6th American Tour title since 2010, this time the Quicken Loans National in New York with a play-off victory. With this success, he also now shares the record with legend Sir Nick Faldo with the most

titles since 1945, on this, arguably the hardest of all the World tours. Cricket, and after my diatribe last week concerning the parlous state of our 3 major sports, it looks as if somebody up 'thar in the cricket hierarchy has taken my comments to heart, as a report (yes, yet another one!) has been commissioned in to the overall running of our major summer sport, so maybe, just maybe, something good will come out of that, although, being cynical, I doubt it! Anyway, at least the England selectors have now integrated some new, young faces in to the team, with all of them, Ballance, Ali and Gibson, showing promise, having all scored recent Test centuries and what a find is Chris Jordan as an allrounder, with wickets and runs galore, so bring on the forthcoming Test Series with India, starting next week. 'Tis all for this week, folks, gotta go and start Phase 2, my WC report, before tomorrow's late, late deadline, so until next week, cheers for now! Jezza

Left: USA pull one back to give the Belgians a late scare in another fantastic extra time game. Right: Huntelaar scores Holland’s winner against Mexico in their late show victory over Mexico—that’s what football’s all about.

Left: Luiz gives Brasil the lead against Chile in arguably the game of the tournament up to the knock out stages. Right: Costa Rica players pretty chuffed as they go through on penalties in another great game.

Left: Colombia, still up to something. Right: Santos put the Mexicans 1-0 up against Holland in a great game, but wait a minute, that’s him scoring the winner for Ipswich against Naarwich, how did that one get in here?

The Ibiza Sun, Thursday 3rd July 2014, Issue 741

Last of the Group Results Group E France 0 Ecuador 0 – another South American team bites the dust but France lose their 100% record in a pretty dire performance. Still, they're through and now face Nigeria. Honduras 0 Switzerland 3 – Jezza’ World Cup Report adios to the former, but the Swiss go through to face Argentina in the last 16 and at least give us Europeans another team in the knock-out stages. Look out for Shakiri who makes Sir Chris Hoy's thighs look like matchsticks! Group F Bosnia-Herz 3 Iran 1 – it's goodbye to both but at least B-H came away with a win. Nigeria 2 Argentina 3 – what a magnificent match and credit to both sides, as they both go through to the last 16, the Africans to face France and my overall tip to face Switzerland. Group G USA 0 Germany 1 – the European favourites go through, just, as group winners but given another severe test by Klinnsman's surprise team, who also go thru' as runners up and now face Belgium in the last 16. Portugal 2 Ghana 1 – oh dear, oh dear, the best footballer on the planet and his team go home but probably the best individual performance of the WC to date from Ronaldo, with a pundit rating of 9.5/10 and such a shame. Great game and hats off to Ghana too! Group H S. Korea 0 Belgium 1 – my European “dark horses” finish on top of the group with 3 wins from 3 and now face the USA, so a definite watch on Tuesday. Algeria 1 Russia 1 – well, you can't say the North Africans didn't deserve it as they go through to a last 16 clash with Germany as runners up. As for the Russians, methinks Capello has taken you for a ride and 6 million quid, something to think about on your way home!

www.theibizan.com

Last 16 Knock-out Stage Results Brazil 1 Chile 1 – wow, what a match! The whole of Brazil breathed a huge sigh of relief as the hosts scraped through against a magnificent Chile team, after extra-time and penalties. Oh, lest we forget, I thought Howard Webb, our referee and his English team were superb throughout, even denying, quite correctly, a home goal. Brazil now face Colombia in the Quarters so they'll need to be on top form to get through that one! Colombia 2 Uruguay 0 – absolutely the best team won and what a player that James Rodriguez is, the WC's leading goal-scorer with 5 + 2 assists to boot, but keep your best for Brazil! Less said about Uruguay the better as “The Biter” is sent home in disgrace. Holland 2 Mexico 1 – another stunner but Robben going to ground a bit too often as the Dutch come back from 1 down to score the winner, a pen in the last few minutes, and now face England's Group winners and surprise package, Costa Rica. Costa Rica 1 Greece 1 – yet another European team bows out, but another great game going all the way to extra time and pens. Brilliant from the Ricans with 5 outta 5 but Holland to come? Ooer! France 2 Nigeria 0 – ooh, you lucky Bleus! Plucky Nigerians but lacking that edge in front of goal, whereas the French took their chances. Need to take all of them from here on in as they now face Germany for a Semi spot. Germany 2 Algeria 1 – same could be said here as well, as Algeria played their socks off but class always tells in the end and could be a classic in the Quarter Final, French flair against German pragmatism in an all-European clash. Argentina 1 Switzerland 0 - Argentina lacking ideas whereas the Swiss go all defensive until extra-time but with pens looming, Di Maria, who'd had a terrible game, scores the winner. So my tips go through, by the skin of their teeth to face Belgium. Belgium 2 USA 1 – phew, what an incredible game! 39 shots on goal for the Belgians, 2-0 up in extra-time, and then they nearly blew it. So, another European team in to the Quarters to now face Argentina, but

Page 19

credit to the Americans for taking it all the way. Fact – first time in WC history that all 8 Group winners go through to the Quarters.

Jezza's Comments: What can I say – I asked for goals galore and haven't we just had them! 150 in 52 games after the Germany/ Algeria last 16 match with an average of 2.9 per game, more than the whole of South Africa 2010 put together and we're not even in to the Quarters yet! Feeling depressed one minute as my 3 “Heart” teams, in order, England, Spain and Nigeria, have all gone home, but elated the next, as my 3 “Head” teams, Argentina, Colombia and Belgium are all still there. Time for Jezza's predictions so here we go: Semi's to be Brazil/Germany and Argentina/Holland. The Final? Hmmmmmmmm – difficult so need a bit more time! Final word on Suarez, who proved once and for all to a world-wide audience, that not only is he a serial biter, but he's also a liar and a cheat and he got what he deserved, a 9 match international ban and a 4 month all-football ban so my advice to Liverpool and Brendan Rogers is get rid to Barca, take the money and run! Moving on, “'eiwmbo”, yes, you know who I mean, is handling the WC well altho' I've been banished to the spare room for the late matches! Only another 10 days and 8 games to go, oh ye gentler folk, so just bear with us! (all times are local/Spanish)

Light & Colour, Santa Eulalia Diana Bustamante will present 'La llum dels dies' (The light of the days) next Friday in the municipal exhibition hall of Santa Eulalia. Diana Bustamante, born in Madrid, grew up in Santa Eulalia and she made it her permanent home in 1999 when she returned to the island after finishing her de-

Mar d’Amor Exhibition. Juan Vallet Martinez gree. Up until now, Bustamante has led a brilliant trajectory as a graphic designer and a more personal trajectory as a painter. The municipal exhibition hall of Santa Eulalia will be hosting from next Friday at 8.30pm, until July 18th, an exhibition of her latest works. Diana has wanted to make a personal tribute to the images of the area as she remembers them from when she was a child, giving a view of the simple and authentic Ibiza. The result of 'The llum dels dies' - which brings together an essentially cheerful and colourful work, enhanced by a palette of blues, greens, browns and reds, a very Mediterranean tonality - is to move the viewer to the calm and fragile natural environments Ibiza and, above all, to the places trapped in her memory. Bustamante's landscapes are clearly recognizable but are not figurative. Part of the exhibition is occupied by images of ball pages (traditional Ibicenco dancing) Âwww.dianabustamante.es/

Bejas’ Mar D’Amor Juan Vallet Martinez, known as Bejas, is a skin craftsman by trade and artist by vocation. From last Tuesday until the 11th of July, at the Pacha Hotel, he will be displaying a sample of his most personal and creative side through an exhibition, entitled 'Mar de Amor' (Sea of Love), aims to immerse the observers in the threatening beauty of the waves to invite them to reflect about the dual facet of the sea. Vallet Martinez was born in Orihuela in 1963 and currently lives in Cullera, where he has his studio. He is the father of eight children and countless works of art and craft. He does not consider himself an artist but a researcher that combines in a chameleonic fashion tradition and new technologies. He comes from a family of puppeteers, the Montoya, and early in his life he felt intensely drawn to theatre. He has worked with Joaquín Hinojosa and Vicente Genovés and performed plays by authors such as Dario Fo, Bertold Brecht and Alfred Jarry, amongst others. Between 1998 and 2000 he worked in various apparel and setting creation projects for the Cullera museums. He is booked to exhibit in the Zieglerhof de Lüneburg gallery in Germany next May. If you can’t make it to the Pacha Hotel, you can have a look at his work on his website: Âwww.bejas.es Tribal Art at Atzaró The Agroturismo Atzaró in Sant Carles, hosted Monday and Tuesday a Central India Tribal Art exhibition to benefit the organization Adivasi Arts Trust whose aim is to help promote and preserve tribal art and culture. In Central India there are about 600 different tribal groups called 'adivasis', which means 'original inhabitants'. The exhibition has toured several galleries in London before joining Ibiza and aims to support artists and their communities. Âhttp://joanmirolallumdelanit.caib.es The museum also has an interesting permanent collection of art from the mid 20th Century, much of it from artists who have lived or been based on the island. In the basement you can see some of the Roman and Punic remains that were uncovered when the building was extended, which are entombed underneath a glass floor. The museum and Miró exhibition is free and is open every day, except Mondays. Ronda Narcís Puget, Dalt Vila. For location and opening hours see: Âhttp://www.eivissa.es/mace Old photos of Ibiza Fourty fantastic black and white photographs taken by the German photographer Heinz Vontin are on show at the Puget Museum in Dalt Vila. Taken when he spent the summer on the island in 1955. There are some great photos showing what the island and its people looked like back then. Scenes in Ibiza Town (Vara de Rey, Dalt Vila, La Marina and the port) are juxtaposed with shots in San Antonio and the countryside around the island, showing people at work and at play. Shopkeepers, street traders, fishermen, girls cleaning wool, people relaxing outside on the terrace of the Teatro Pereira and scenes outside the old Cinema Serra are all depicted. Until October 31st. The museum is in a beautiful old palace and it also houses the permanent collection from father and son artists Narcís Puget Riquer and Narcís Puget Viñas who both lived in Ibiza and painted scenes of island life. Also worth seeing. Entrance to the museum and the exhibition is free. For opening hours check their website, but it’s always closed on Monday. C/ Major, Dalt Vila. Âhttp://www.eivissa.es/mace

Now the temperature is rising, a good way of escaping the summer heat is to take refuge in one of Ibiza’s airconditioned galleries and look at some art. Here’s a quick roundup of what you can see in Ibiza Town at the moment. What’s even better is that they are all free to get in and most are open into the evening.
