June 900k Record Breaker! Airport Continues To Break Records. The trend for breaking records this year continues at Ibiza airport in June, when 900,000 passengers used the facilities, which is a 7.7% increase on previous figures. There were 8,000 flights operating from the airport, a 9.2% increase on previous air traffic figures for the month. Cruise Ships Bonanza. Four cruise ships arrived in Ibiza Port all on the same day this week bringing a Bonanza to the town for a day. Over 8,000 tourists disembarked and it is believed that they spent around 800,000â‚Ź in the local economy during the time they were ashore. It appears that the only problem was the lack of taxis adapted for disabled passengers available to get from the jetty to the town centre. More cruise liners are arriving every week and it was announced that the last of the 119 liners planned to dock in Ibiza this year will be on the 8th November. The end of this year will see the completion of the landing facilities for cruise liners in the Port so it will be possible for sev-

eral 300metre long cruise ships to dock at the same time. Consequently, it is expected that 2015 will be even better than 2014 for the cruise liners visiting Ibiza. House Sales Increase. House Sales in the Baleares are up when compared to the same time last year, with seven hundred and seventy two properties having exchanged hands on the islands. This 33% increase makes Baleares the autonomous community with the highest percentage rate increase in the property market anywhere in Spain. By comparison,

in Spain property sales have fallen by nearly 8% in the same period. Ibiza Town Political Crisis. This week Lina Sansano, deputy Mayor of Ibiza Town and councillor in charge of culture and heritage, resigned her post and is maybe going to give up her seat on the council. This is a major crisis for Ibiza Town Mayor, Pilar Mari, who is now facing problems to govern in the borough. The Council is made up of twenty one councillors of which only seven belong to the Mayor's PP Conservative Party. She has to rely on support from two councillors belonging to the

Beware Of False Parking Attendants. A couple from Barcelona complained publicly about false parking attendants who apparently charge 3€ to look after your car on waste ground located along the road entering into Ibiza Town from Santa Eulalia. The couple with their young daughter paid the 3€ but when they returned after dining in Ibiza Town their car was gone and the parking attendants as well! It cost another 97€ to get their car back after having to take a taxi to the municipal police car pound as well as 50€ more which they had to pay for a fine which was pending on the vehicle from some previous occasion. Complaining about this rip off to the Mayor of the town on the official web site, they were more annoyed to see the same parking attendants, allegedly all known to the local police, back at work again the next night as they drove by. Be warned!

PREF party and the ex PP Conservative Mayor, Marienna Sanchez Jerregui, who, a few months ago, resigned her post and left the PP Conservative party after a controversy over the payment of publicity about the Town Hall in local media. Reportedly, Lina Sansano has resigned because of disagreement about how to spend remnants of the heritage budget on ensuring that the UNESCO Heritage award is maintained for the town. Beach Club Plan Withdrawn. The promoters of the Tagomago Island Beach bar have withdrawn their application to the coastal authorities to increase the size and capacity of the installation. Apparently sitting the length of time it is taking to get the permissions they need, the promoters are going to run the beach bar on the naturally protected island in the same way as the last few years for which they presumably have all the relevant permits. This news was welcomed by the Island Consell Government and the Town Hall in Santa Eulalia. However, the investigation into the construc-

Page 2

tion and installations, which have taken place on the island over the last few years, is still on going. It appears that the presiding judge is prepared to take the case further but is waiting for a decision from the public prosecutors office. As a footnote to this report, local fishermen have complained about the installation of five buoys around the coast of the island which are presumably for pleasure crafts to moor. These are apparently hampering the traditional fishing methods used by the local fishermen in this area of protected water. The Fishermen claim that at least one of the buoys is located where a local and very well liked fish, used in local dishes, gerret d’artet, can be and has been caught for centuries in the season between October and April. Ex President Will Go To Jail. Ex Balear Government President, Jaime Matas, will go to prison for nine months and one day for having illegally made payments of 170,000€ to a press associate whilst in office. His appeal against the sentence, which has already been reduced

from six years, was rejected this week by the justice authorities in Madrid and he will shortly enter prison. Matas has several more cases in the courts stemming from the time that he was President and could face more sentences in the future. Fishing Hut Fire Causes Hotel Evacuation. The fire and smoke caused by a blaze which destroyed four fishermen’s huts in the Port of Sant Miquel, led to 400 tourists being evacuated from their hotel complex located on the rocks 15metres above at 4am in the morning. With the fire soon being controlled, the tourists returned to the hotel a few hours later after what appears to have been a precautionary measure more than anything else. The authorities are now investigating the causes of the fire and cleaning up the mess caused in this picturesque spot. By Passes Planned. The authorities are planning to build several by passes or install traffic flow and speed restricting traffic lights on the island by the end of the year. These road

Ibiza News July and August. Sixty monitors are also employed in Sant Josep to make sure the youngsters have fun and experience all sorts of new activities, but are safe and well looked after.

In the first week of their research program in the coastal waters around Ibiza, scientists and volunteers have identified five sperm whales, cachalotes, swimming in our waters. Working in conjunction with St Andrews University in Scotland

and a Swiss Oceanic Society, the scientists are using sophisticated listening equipment to locate the whales in the waters around the Baleares until mid August. There are thought to be four-hundred and twenty whales inhabiting this area of

the Med and so far ninety have been identified in this and previous searches. Other sea mammals such as dolphins are being identified whilst the search for whales is carried out.

works will affect the villages of Sant Joan, San Rafael and Portinaxt as well as the area known as Ca Na Negreta. Hopefully there will also be improvements to the PMV 812-2 road near Santa Eulalia and a new access to Es Cubells from Sant Josep.

mercial use of the port facilities by large pleasure crafts, at the expense of the smaller boats used by local fishermen and residents.

San Antonio Police Report. The police in San Antonio reported that they had detained four people for selling balloons filled with illegal laughing gas along the fountain promenade in the town. It appears two of those detained sold the balloons to tourists whilst the other two were supposed to look out for the police! In other actions the police detained several thieves caught robbing the beach bags and clothes of unsuspecting tourists whilst they were swimming, and their possessions were left unattended on the S’Arenal beach in town. Also twenty two people were registered late at night in the West End area of the town. Of the twenty two, fifteen were charged with various offences against municipal by laws, including illegal street selling, prostitution and illegal pubic relation activities.

Port Planning Centralised. The new laws centralising the planning and control of all the port facilities throughout the Baleares were approved this week. These new laws give the decision making power to the Balearic Government in Mallorca and will pave the way for more privatisation of the facilities and allegedly take away protagonism from the individual Island Consell Governments who, from now on, will supposedly have only an advisory role. There is also a fear, expressed by the political opposition, that the Balearic Government will favour a more com-

Cala Corral Gets License. The small privately built pleasure craft harbour, located on the Cala Corral coast, has finally been given a temporary license to operate by the coastal authorities, after twelve years of litigation over the installation. The owners will now make a minimum investment to get the fifty one berths up and running, but are apparently reluctant to make the big investment that they wanted whilst they are only being given a temporary license. It appears the alternative is for the state to take over the installation, but the sticking point seems to be the price as this is prime frontline real estate with a port facility already installed.

Bogus Gas Callers Turn Up The Heat There have been reports for the last two weeks about people pretending to come and check your gas installations and then scamming you into paying large amounts of money, and even stealing in some cases. What is unheard of is that a couple of these undercover thieves breaking into the garden of a well-locked house, unhinging the gate to get into the premises and later attacking the owner when trying to scare them off. Fortunately, there weren’t any injuries apart from some broken nails. The Guardia Civil were phoned and they commented that this is the first time they have heard about a woman being involved. This neighbour of the Benimussa area phoned our offices to inform us about what had happened, concerned for the wellbeing of other readers.

Ibiza Summer Kids Clubs. Many working parents look to the summer kids clubs to provide care during the long school holidays. They are organised by the local Town Halls and educational authorities around the island. They are fun, learning and recreational experiences for school age children. This week it was reported that over a thousand children are attending the summer schools which are set up by the Sant Josep Town Hall during

Birthday Party Complaints. It appears that a huge, masquerade birthday party held at the former military facility near Santa Gertrudis, called El Polvorín, caused problems for the neighbours even though most had been previously told about the party and invited. The main problems appear to have been noise from traffic arriving and leaving the party as well as parking problems. The Town Hall in Santa Eulalia is now investigating the complaints, especially as there is speculation that the party was possibly a ticket event and not a private affair. The Es Polvorin is a former military munitions store with a huge underground basement situated in 65,000m2 of land. It was a publicly owned building but was sold off to private owners for over 2,9 million€ as part of Consell Island Government economic cuts last year.

No Water For Days. Several residents of the industrial area of Montecristo denounce private company that supplies their water, Suministres d’Aigües del Torrent d'en Fornàs, for leaving them for several days without water supply and then give them water in "bad condition." It is estimated that some 70 families have been affected because it also affects the Can Bufí area in Puig d’en Valls. After spending nearly three days without water, when it eventually came back last Saturday, neighbours say it was brown. Monday afternoon they started to see an improvement in their water supply. Also, the PSOE-Pacte in San Antonio has criticised the water supply problems that affect San Rafael where some of the neighbours haven’t had water for ten days. The spokesman pointed out that a year and a half ago Pepita Gutierrez, San Antonio mayor, opened the new municipal water network for San Rafael and insisted that it is still not running.

Seahorses in Decline

Mediterranean Seahorse Reports of dead seahorses being washed up on various beaches this week led to news about the drastic decrease of the population of this small, but important marine creature. Seemingly linked to the damage, and reduction, of the Posidonia (sea eel grass) un-

derwater forests, which are fundamental in maintaining the quality of the coastal waters and environment. The possible extinction of the seahorse population could cause problems within the local marine ecosystem unless protective action is taken.

Leisure

San Antonio Camping Accommodation Camping in San Antonio

"Sophia V Central San Antonio, home to the West End and Sunset strip of bars and clubs can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Crowded with tourists, and the hectic nightlife, they don’t call Ibiza the party island for nothing. Perhaps, amongst it all, there are some days when you want to relax and unwind: long swims in the morning, relaxed lunches, sunbathing on a lounger breathing in the fresh air, listening to the sound of the birds chirping with nothing but tall trees and beautiful flowers around you. And of an evening, a chilled drink with music and friends. You can experience this. The best part is that you don’t have to travel out of San Antonio, and amongst all the craziness, you can enjoy this tranquil retreat. ‘Camping in Ibiza’ is a campsite, opposite Lidl whereby if you’re not paying attention, could easily miss the sign. The majority of people expect campsites to be basic, a field of tents; however this isn’t the case.

You can stay in one of many bungalows, (big or small) with shower, toilet and electricity. You take advantage of the offers at present: your accommodation, breakfast, bottle of sparkling wine in room on arrival, complimentary parking and late checkout for reasonable prices. You

Sunset cruising

"Claire B When you’re invited to go on a sunset cruise by Ibiza Speedboats you don’t say no! Moored in San Antonio near the Yacht Club, we boarded the classy speedboat appropriately named ‘Just more fun’ at 7pm, which became our floating home for the next few hours. Easing out of our berth and out of the marina we sped out across the bay towards Cala Bassa, where we moored up, cracked open some cold beers (happily there are two fridges on board), took in the last of the evening sun and admired the view. The boat can hold nine people comfortably, but there were only seven of us including captain Shaggy, so we had ample space on deck. One of our party decided that the tempting turquoise water was too much to look at and dived in for a cooling swim. From Cala Bassa we headed back across the bay and moored up close to Cala Gracio and Cala Gracioneta, two of my favourite small beaches in the area. For the finale we cruised back towards San Antonio and

moored up outside Café Mambo, where we could hear the DJ’s sunset set wafting across the sea in our direction. The music was great that night and so was the chilled cava that we opened in time for the performance of the evening, the Ibizan sunset. Being on a boat gave a different perspective. In one direction you could see the hoards of people outside the bars on the sunset strip and in the other watch the sun as it turned red and sunk into the sea. You’re definitely not alone: there’s a host of other boaters, bathers and people paragliding and paddling on SUPs. Fortunately the sun put on a good performance for us. It was slightly hazy on the horizon, which filtered out some of the fierce glow from the sun, turning it into a deep red glowing ball, as it sunk behind the low clouds hugging the sea and disappeared out of sight. People on the sunset strip clapped, which is one of my pet hates, but something I guess you can’t complain about if you watch the sunset from the most popular spot on the island. Shortly after sundown we had a visit from ‘Mojito man’ who swims from boat to boat, offer-

ing to make mojitos for you from the kit contained in his two waterproof bags. Great fun to watch and an ingenious business idea! All in all, experiencing the sunset from a boat in Ibiza is definitely something that should be on your list of things to do before you die, if you haven’t already done it. As well as sunset cruises Ibiza Speedboats also offer day cruises to Formentera, along the West Coast and Es Vedrá, the North Coast and Benirrás beach and to The Blue Marlin. They have a selection of boats, which are available for private hire. Prices depend on the length of the cruise, the number of people and the time of year, but for a 2hour sunset cruise start at about 45€ per person. Their captains all live in Ibiza and know the coastline inside out, including all those secluded spots for a cool swim. For details see: Âwww.ibizaspeedboats.com

Ocean Mania

"Nick Gibbs And now for something completely different … Ocean Mania is described as a water wipe-out park. Exactly what the ‘wipeout’ refers to we’ll have to wait and see, but if it is anything like what we are guessing from the TV show, but with the added bonus of not having to listen to Richard Hammond, it has to be a winner. Ocean Mania is the latest venture for the people behind Ocean Beach Club and the Ocean Beach Hotel featured in last week’s edition. It will be situated along the S’Arenal Beachfront directly opposite the beach club. The inflatable, floating obstacle course will sit 50 meters out from the beach spanning 7,000sqft. It includes interlocking stations of water slides, trampolines, swings, balancing beams, bridges, cliffs, free floating catapults & climbing towers. Free floating catapults? I can’t picture it but I want a go now.

Owner of Ocean Mania, Tony Truman said he was excited to “offer holidaymakers hours of memorable and safe fun”. The family friendly circuit will be open to all ages as long as they are competent swimmers. The water park will cost €10 per person per hour or €25 for a day pass. There will be lifeguards at all times and guests must wear a life jacket. OK, safety first, got it, now where’s my catapult? Ocean Mania opens ‘any day now’, then daily 10am to 8pm Âwww.oceanmania.es

The Perfect Pimms

"Nick Gibbs Few things conjure up an image of a perfect British Summer’s day better than a Jug of Pimms and whilst the perfect British summer day may be an elusive concept we do not need to go without our national aperitif in Ibiza, a climate far better suited to it’s sublime sun kissed flavours. A well made Pimms will give any

Sangria a run for it’s money though we all have our own twists on the standard mix and so truth be told, the perfect Pimms is very much in the eye of the beholder. History of Pimms Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm invented the thirst-

quencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs. Good old Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, dishing it out in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cu p m onik er w as bo r n. After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups. Scotch lent its name to No. 2 cup while No. 3 used brandy, No. 4 rum, No. 5 rye and No. 6 vodka. Of these sequels, the vodka cup and brandy (now called Winter) are the only ones in production while original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity. Pimms Recipes Traditional Pimms No.1 Take one slice of orange, lemon, apple, cucumber per person and one sprig of mint and add to two

parts lemonade to one part Pimms. Turbo Pimms No.1 As above but five parts lemonade, two parts Pimms, one part gin. Over the years I have refined my own variation which has been very well received. I read in the press last week that the Pimms being served at Wimbledon was one fifth the strength of even the traditional Pimms No1 recipe. My own concoction will be of no use to those of such temperate tastes, this recipe will most certainly get you Squiffy in a Jiffy. I commend it to you. Amanda O’Riordan Summer Fashion

"Amanda O’Riordan

Âhttp://amandazipsitup.com/ This summer is big on chunky, funky jewellery to enhance your swimwear. I’ve come to the table with some affordable high street and independent designer bits and bobs. I also stumbled across some chronic beach disasters that you should steer well clear of … Remember when a trip to the beach was all about fun? Badly played volley ball with no idea of the rules or burying a family member up to their necks in the sand and running off into the distance without even looking back? Seems like those innocent days have gone as everyone is consumed by ‘body image paranoia’. What with the rise in selfies, everyone is obsessed with their appearance – especially on the beach. The sudden rise in Budgie Smugglers and ‘banana hammocks’ for men (thanks

Towie) is particularly frightening, especially if you’re hung like a Peruvian donkey, which those boys aren’t. Anyway, less isn’t always necessarily more. When it comes to tiny swimming costumes, I’m pretty sure nobody wants to see ‘half ounce of old holborn’ poking out the sides of bikini bottoms or anyone chewing cotton as they squelch over to get a glass of Rose… “Pull it out love, you’re touching cloth.” Nobody does beach chic as effortlessly as Kate - especially in Ibiza. So, let’s take tips from her and keep it classy San Antonio. Wherever you end up this summer, I hope you find these fashion finds useful. Well, the Ibiza royalty behind the brand – namely Dawn Hindleand friends – have created a stand-out jewellery range guaranteed to make any night out of catwalk calibre, called ‘True Rocks’. Their pieces have already graced the pages of Vogue and Grazia’s front cover, enjoying celebrity adornment from the likes of Lily Allen to Haim wearing pieces at Glastonbury, Ibiza Rocks and Party at The Serpentine this summer. The company only began in April 2014 and they have already collaborated with YBA artist Gavin Turk on what I’m sure will become their signature piece – ‘The Biscuit’ – (“Bitten” Rich Tea Biccie) Rumours are rife that this necklace is being worn by Idris at Pikes

Common Exercise Mistakes and How To Avoid Them

"James Davis If you’re going to invest some time and energy into getting into shape, then you want to make sure you’re doing it right. Correct technique will yield better

results, and optimising your time and the effectiveness of your sessions by doing the right thing are going to get you to where you want to go faster, so let’s look at some common mistakes and the fixes for them. Not setting a goal. Hitting the

gym, running, swimming, it’s fine, but what’s your aim? If you have a specific goal in mind you’re likely to train harder for it, and more importantly you can build a programme to help you reach that goal. Turning up and trudging on the treadmill day

after day is the route to negligible results and boredom - set a goal, then build a plan around it. Not progressing or changing your programme. Okay, you’ve got your programme, but your body will keep adapting, so your programme needs to adapt too so that you keep seeing results. Aim to change things around whenever you feel you’re hitting a plateau or you’re getting comfortable with what you’re doing. It’s a good thing to review your training every 6 to 10 weeks. Lack of intensity. See the above about getting comfortable, you should be pushing yourself in every session. If you go at it hard, you can work out in a shorter space of time. If you’re spending time between sets chatting, flicking through a magazine on the treadmill or checking your phone then you need to revaluate. Exercise should be fun, but it should also be challenging, you need to be breaking a sweat and getting out of breath - that break between sets should see you sipping water and getting your breath back before cracking on with the next one, not chatting about Luciano’s latest set for 10 minutes! Poor hydration. We can’t emphasise this enough, if you’re not properly hydrated you won’t perform as well so you won’t get the results from your workout. Drink lots of water and keep topping up through your workout. Poor nutrition. There’s a saying that it’s 30% training, 70% nutrition, and it’s true. Whether you’re training for an endurance event, bulking up or trying to lose weight you need to get the nutrition part right. Kiss goodbye to the bread and alioli and focus on lean protein sources, with lots of raw or lightly cooked vegetables and salad. Improper technique. Not only limiting your results, but quite possibly damaging, and sadly, and all too common sight. There are lots of ways to go wrong, here are the main ones - on a

squat your knees should never come forward over your toes, on a deadlift you need to hold the spine neutral and the core tight, don’t round the back, and finally, when lifting, never lock out your joints - you’re probably training to build muscle/lose fat, not book in for a set of new knees. This leads us on to barefoot training. Yes yoga, Pilates and martial arts are fine barefoot, as is running on the beach, but please, please don’t lift weights barefoot or in flip flops. Sure trainers might not offer much protection, but like a wetsuit in a shark attack they will at least hold your foot together. Drop even a 10kg plate or dumbell from waist height onto a bare foot and you can probably kiss your foot goodbye, and you probably like your feet... Not warming up or stretching afterwards. The warm up is essential to prep your body and muscles for what’s to come, you’re aiming to get oxygenated blood to the muscles and get the joints and ligaments warmed up and mobile before moving on - so make sure you do. The same goes for stretching, if you want to maintain a full range of motion, then stretching after training is essential as muscles tend to shorten and tighten when training. I hope that helps, these are simple things to fix, if in any doubt, or to get pointers, then do consider training with a professional, if you can’t afford regular personal training, then at least a couple of sessions or small group sessions should help you sort out technique and get any questions answered. Seeing a good trainer will help take a lot of the guess work out of what you’re doing and help you get the results faster. There are loads of good trainers on the island, just make sure they’re properly qualified and that they have the relevant insurance to cover their activities, then you’re good to go. Happy safe training!

"Nick Gibbs Ibiza Design Awards is a graphic design contest to recognise and honour the season's best club and music posters. We ran a special feature on Club Poster Art in edition 737 5th June this year. Increasingly recognised for their artistic merit and cult collector status Ibiza club poster art was recognised with an exhibition at the London museum of contemporary art in January. The Ibiza design awards, brainchild of two Spanish entrepreneurs Ibai Cereijo and Iratxe Larrea, further reinforce the esteem and

artistic merit of what is often in practical terms the most disposable of arts with many designs having an intended shelf life of no more than a few days before they are replaced with the next event on the party calendar. Talking of his inspiration for the awards Iratxe said “Walking around Ibiza and seeing those design artworks posted on walls, which are created by the clubs to draw the public’s attention, has become a real show in itself,” Participating venues include ÂSpace Ibiza ÂPacha ÂUshuaïa Beach Hotel

years since the album was released in 1994 and Nas has been touring and performing it live around the world. There was a big buzz around the island for this gig. For me however, this album and Nas for that matter somehow passed me by! I’m not sure how as in 1994 I was still living in Manchester, listening to lots of music and had been a big fan of hip hop, amongst other genres. But anyway it did. For my pre-gig research I turned to iTunes, which says: “Illmatic is so frequently saddled with the mantle of ‘greatest Hip-Hop album of all time’ that it can be difficult for the first time listener to approach it without trepidation”. Which is interesting, because that’s exactly how I was feeling about the gig. I’m not fond of gigs in which artists play a complete album, especially if it’s one that you don’t know well. But Ibiza Rocks is a great venue to see any artist in, so off I went with an open mind, hoping that I would enjoy the gig and possibly even hear something that I recognised. And I certainly did on both counts! With some encouragement from his MC who was already onstage, Nas bounded onstage at 11pm to the closing bars of ‘The Genesis’, the opening track on the album, and immediately showed us he meant business. Starting with ‘N. Y. State of Mind’, he pretty much performed the album in order, deviating slightly towards the end, but then went on to sing lots of other tracks from his extensive back catalogue, including LocoMotive, Accident Murderer and Nastradamus. Live, the songs really came alive and sounded both raw and fresh. It was one of those nights where I and pretty much everyone else in the venue was dancing. The sound was great and you could hear the lyrics loud and clear over the top of the expert scratching, beats, samples and back-up vocals coming from his sidekick on the decks. Combined with stunning backdrop projections, many featuring images and video footage from New York, of the skyline, people and other stunning images, you could not take your eyes off the stage or keep your feet still. It was a slick, engaging show, and I was not alone in loving it. Check out the videos (links below) to get a sense of it. Videos: Life’s a Bitch:

“Ah, those were the days.” The Space 25th Anniversary has sparked much nostalgia amongst Ibizans of a certain age. It seems everybody has some fond recollections of their own journey through Space. As is no surprise we can rely on Colin Butts to say what so many are thinking in his own imitable style through his facebook post this week.

Colin Butts So, today is the 25th anniversary of Space. A superclub. Not a superclub that suddenly burst onto the scene as a result of having millions of euros thrown at it, retaining the world's biggest DJs for astronomic fees and having a blind eye turned to licensing laws most other businesses have to comply to. Yes, that might be the case now but why did it become so popular in the 1st place? Daytime partying. The place all clubbers went to in the 90s after a night out, streaming into the club at 8am whilst bemused tourists going to the water park or staying in the Fiesta hotel opposite (now Ushuaia) looked on. Were it not for those daytime sessions, Space would not be the club it is - indeed, Ibiza probably wouldn't be the island it is. Sure, the scene has evolved just as everything evolves and no-one should live in the past...but that doesn't mean you should forget the past. So, whereas for best part of a decade from the early-mid 90s I would fly from the UK for every opening & closing party at the behemoth of clubbing, today, even though I live but a dozen miles away, I won't be going. Yes, part of that is cos my own clubbing journey has all but fizzled out but there's another reason. Two DJs changed that club (and possibly Ibiza) yet in all the hype I haven't seen a mention of them or any real appreciation of what they did when they had the idea of doing daytime parties in what was then a disco-cum-conference centre. As far as I'm aware, they haven't even been invited. So, whilst the thousands are in Space today, the majority totally unaware of the fact that they probably wouldn't be standing or dancing there were it not for these 2 DJs, I shall be at home raising my glass to them and having a nostalgic 5 minutes remembering those incredible days on the Space terrace. Alex Petrides and Brandon Block I salute you.

Ibiza Rocks House at Pacha

Claire B This summer, the crew from Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes are putting on parties at Pacha every Monday night. I’m a regular at their home at Pikes, where anything can happen at their fantastic parties in that unique, intimate, environment tucked away on the hillside just outside San Antonio. When I first heard the announcement, I wondered whether the parties could be up-scaled to the vastness and anonymity of Pacha. But there was only one way to find out, so off I went a few weeks ago, and loved it. Wanting a second helping, I couldn’t miss the opportunity of going again on the night that disco legend Giorgio Moroder was manning the decks. The ceiling of the main room was decorated with an odd-ball collection of flying pigs and other animals, inflatables of the party logo combining the Pacha cherries with Ibiza Rocks plectrums, and lots of disco balls, whilst dancers wearing amazing costumes busted out some impressive dance moves. Up in the Funky Room, resident Pacha DJ Graham Sahara played some great deep house tunes to warm us up for the night ahead. Back downstairs, wacky, off-the-wall entertainment popped up sporadically. Amongst it a flash mob in the entrance, a rendition of an opera song from a lipsynching drag queen from the DJ booth, and a scantilyclad dance troupe – I’m sure there was lots more that I missed. However, the pièce de résistance for me was the trapeze artist who was hoisted into the air and fired out lasers from her nether regions. And they changed colour! How did she do that? Giorgio began his set at a respectable 2pm and we were treated to a repertoire of his greatest hits: lots

Photo Mark De Groot of Donna Summer, with The Human League, Berlin, Irene Cara and Daft Punk mixed in. Donna Summer’s groundbreaking disco classic ‘I Feel Love’ got the biggest reaction on the dance floor as soon as the opening synth riff kicked in. With videos of the artists projected behind him to accompany the songs, when he wasn’t attending to his decks, Giorgio put his arms in the air and was clearly enjoying himself as much as we all were. He ended his hour-long set with Blondie’s ‘Call Me’ and a barrage of confetti showered over the dance floor as everyone went crazy. A great tune to end on. We were euphoric, but Giorgio was followed by what can only be described as a brilliant short set from two acoustic guitarists playing dance classics such as ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Zombie Nation’ in a frenetic flamenco style. I was wondering how whoever followed Giorgio was going to make an impression, but they did. Simply amazing. Next up was a DJ set from Basement Jaxx, but I retreated to the intimacy and funkiness of the funky room, which I prefer. The DJ played some classic hip hop and old skool house, and the music was so good that I had to postpone my visit to the ladies room several times because I simply couldn’t leave the dance floor. I danced more than I’d danced for ages.

Bathroom Karaoke at Pacha. Credit Mark De Groot

Shortly after 4am my friends decided to retire for the night and left me on my own. I had 10 minutes to kill before my next Discobus home, so I went for a wander and stumbled upon the karaoke taking place in the toilets. One of the recent additions at Pikes has been the introduction of karaoke in the bathroom, and the team have brilliantly transferred the idea to Pacha and installed a cast iron roll top bath in the toilets on the ground floor. In charge of the proceedings were the inimitable Sunny and his drag queen sidekick, egging on punters enthusiastically singing from the bathtub to an appreciative audience. It was priceless, and without a doubt the best time-killer experience I have ever encountered! Overall, the whole night was amazing and a bit like stumbling into an alternative universe, leaving you with the thought “did it all really happen”? Well, yes it did, and there is photographic evidence to prove it. Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes is putting on a party every Monday until October 6th, with a host of big name DJs each week. Check the website for the schedule, but try and go to at least one of them – these guys know how to put on a party and it’s a great, fun night out. See the weekly line-up here:

Icona Pop Claire B The latest live offering from the Hard Rock Hotel was Swedish female pop duo Icona Pop, ‘pop icon’ in Italian. They were new to me, but research showed that their second single ‘I Love It’ featuring Charli XCX released in 2012 reached number 1 in the singles chart in the UK, 2 in Sweden and 3 in Australia, Austria and Germany, having been featured in the ‘Girls’ TV show. But none of their subsequent releases or their album have done anywhere near as well. The twenty-something girls, Aino Jaw and Caroling Hjelt appeared onstage at 11pm with glasses of wine and took up their places behind the DJ decks in the centre of the stage. Starting with ‘We Got the World’ they took it in turns to sing, mix and do whatever they were doing on the decks. When they weren’t twiddling buttons they were jumping up and down enthusiastically. This wasn’t quite what I was expecting and I was beginning to wonder if they were just going to play at being DJs all night and sing from behind the decks. However, for the third

song they both came to the front of the stage with their microphones and sang their shouty vocals over the backing tracks, dancing and jumping up and down as they did. The audience was a mixed bunch: a combination of teenagers down the front, parents with children at the back, hotel guests and lots of dressed-up couples who looked they were going onto somewhere afterwards. Reaction to the performance was mixed. When the audience knew the songs they danced along but were pretty stationery in between. The Icona Pop girls were clearly having fun, jumping up and down and dancing around the stage when they weren’t mixing on the decks or singing at the front and they were caught having the odd drink too. All through the hour-long set their videos and images were projected behind them, providing a stunning visual display. Occasionally smoke cannons and flames were let off at the front of the stage adding to the spectacle. For one number they were joined on-

stage by some of the Antz crew from sister venue Ushüaia next door, who danced around manically in their black head-to-toe ants costumes. But they saved their big hit until the end. They launched into ‘We Love It’ and immediately everyone in the crowd took out their phones to video it. Pink and white confetti was blasted into the crowd, just before the 20.10 BA flight from Gatwick flew over the venue to make its final descent into the airport nearby. It’s obvious that these girls just want to have fun, and that’s exactly what they did. They weren’t really for me: I struggled wondering if they wanted to be DJs or singers, but maybe it doesn’t matter, and they can be both. Regardless, the crowd enjoyed it and they did too, saying “Ibiza you were f*****g amazing” before leaving the stage. And that was it, the end, as people filed out of the venue, which was completely littered with pink and white strips of paper confetti. Videos: I Love It:

Letter From Juan

"Juan Did all you lunar fanatics and Hierbas brewers enjoy the “Supermoon” last Saturday? Sounds like something a “Chelsea” gal might say “oh darling isn’t that a simply Sooper moon”! For the un - initiated a “Supermoon” is a full moon when it is at its closest point to the earth in the year or at its “Perigree”! If you had bothered to have a look, you would have seen it in all its glory in the Ibizan night sky. At least here in most places on the Island you don’t have massive light pollution, so you have a perfect opportunity to study the moon or the stars. Mind you, the moon has been suspected of having various effects on people hence the name “lunatic”, from the belief that changes of the moon caused intermittent insanity. So when the next lot of lunatic football supporters go mad, you will know it is not really their fault! Anyway whether the moon does or does not create madness is one thing but all I know is that several people’s sleep pattern is affected by the Moon. No doubt Astroblog could have explained it all to us if he was still around. On a more mundane level, hasn’t the weather been a bit strange in June and July. I don’t think I can

remember it being quite so cool at the end of June and the beginning of July. However I for one am not complaining, long may the cool sea breezes continue. Well I had better wind up for this week as no doubt Jezza will need a lot of room to complete his World Cup round up. Before you Ladies get too excited about getting your husbands and boyfriends away from the television just remember there is the Tour de France, the Open Championship, the Commonwealth games, the Ryder cup, several Grand Prix races and you guessed it the Football season starts all over again. On that happy note I will love you and leave you, have a good week, yours, Juan.

Peter and Barbara Jordan have done a stint before and I think they will be continuing the View from the Pew column while they are here. I watched the World Cup Final last night until the last few minutes of extra-time. I had convinced myself that it would end in penalties and so I went had my shower to prepare for it. So I missed the only goal of the final! Oh well. One of my friends jokingly accused me of always finding some-

thing spiritual or about God in everything! I expect there is something there in me missing that goal but I’ll leave it to you to think about it. A clue might be Jesus’ parable of the 5 wise and 5 foolish virgins, but before you get the wrong idea, read his story in the gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, verses 1-13. Pergolas For anyone sitting out in their garden on a scorching hot afternoon in Ibiza who may be thinking of a solution to the question of shade and not having a tree or shrub that is big enough to create it there is the instant solution of an umbrellas or sun shades but as soon as the wind kicks up one soon realises they are no an ideal all year round solution. A pergola however can withstand high winds and winter storms if built correctly and can be erected anywhere in a garden even on an existing terrace next to a swimming pool. It is possible to buy steel footings that are hammered into the ground that can have posts fixed in them that will be reasonably strong. This system will allow plants to grow up and over it but a pergola built by cementing strong post into the ground will be the strongest and allow for more flexibility as more things can be fixed to it. One can attach trellis and side screen to it or even a solid roof if it is constructed correctly. Therefore some careful thought is needed before starting work in

that the position in relation to the house and garden is important. Wood used for a pergola must be seasoned and treated with preservative for longevity. The posts should be at least 7.5x7.5 cm or bigger if more weight is to placed on it. Then there will need to be rails fixed across the back and fronts to hang the beams on. The posts should be set into the ground to a depth of at least half a meter or more is there will be a lot of weight on it. The best way to lay the beams across the rails is to cut notches in both the beam and rail so the sit into each other. They can then be screwed or bolted onto each other for additional strength. It is possible to build a pergola along a path to grow plants on it or as an sitting or sleeping area this is where the planning comes in before one starts to build a pergola. Obviously there are a lot of climbing plants that can be grown on this type of structure from the plants that will give dense screening such as honeysuckle, podrana’s wisteria, or plants such as jasmine, roses campsis which will still climb over the top of a pergola but will not be so dense allowing some light through during the day. One great thing that can be done is to train fruit such as grapes apples, plums and even citrus fruits such as orange or lemon trees. This can be done by attaching wires along the sides to train fruit trees along, grapes however can be trained over the top. The fact that these plants are pruned in the winter means that the sun can shine on to the pergola during the winter months but will be blocked by the foliage during the summer months. Watch Out, There’s a Thief About! The British Embassy in Spain has issued warnings to watch out for gangs of modern-day highway robbers who are preying on people driving foreign-registered vehicles and hire cars. Police in the Catalonia region of Spain have dealt with 126 British victims of robbery on the AP7 motorway between the French border and the Valencia region over the past two years. British Consulates across mainland Spain say they are receiving regular reports of roadside robbery occurring along the coast between Barcelona and Alicante, across Andalucía in the south, and in the Madrid region. Consular staff estimate that 1 in 20 of all emergency passports issued last year as a result of theft were following motorway robberies. A new video produced by the Foreign Office - ‘Don’t let thieves drive you to distraction’ shows real-life footage of some of the most common tactics. Highway robbers flag their victim down by indicating there is a problem with their vehicle, then one gets out to distract the occupants’ attention, whilst an unseen accomplice robs passports, money and other valuables before the gang makes a fast getaway. In a second case, the robber tricks a victim into thinking they have a problem with their parked vehicle, whilst another opens the door and removes valuables. Other tricks include throwing something that creates a sudden noise, or puncturing a tyre at a roadside rest stop. Will Middleton, consular regional director for Spain, warns: ‘Distraction is the most common

technique used by highway robbers in Spain. They will try to worry you about the state of your vehicle, and then whilst they point out the supposed problem, an accomplice is robbing you. ‘So be wary of anyone attempting to stop you when you are driving, or trying to point out a problem or offering assistance. They may not be the good Samaritan they appear to be. Top tips to avoid highway robbers ruining your holiday:

Lots of transfers taking place now including Adam Lalana to Liverpool Suarez has gone off to Barça (good riddance!) for nigh on 74m Gooners will be pleased to know that Barça's Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez has joined Mnsr Wenger's AllStars at the Emirates for nigh on 34m 2 veteran's have moved on, with Ashley Cole (still a better player than Baines and should have gone to Brazil as first choice, Woy!) signing for

Roma on a two year contract and Man U's Patrice Evra agreeing to join Juventus and finally, Tom Ince, whose father Man U legend Paul, thought he was good enough to join Italian giants Inter Milan, has just signed for Hull City. Oh, how reality must hurt! Golf and congrats to Justin Rose who won the Scottish Open at Royal Aberdeen by 2 strokes. Mind you, after the 1st round it looked as if McIlroy was going to waltz away with it after a stunning course record of 64 but (hoping to copy Novak Djokovic who won Wimbledon this year after a relaxing holiday here in IBZ as Rory wuz 'ere at the beginning of the week) fell away with a 2nd round 6 over par 78 (must have been all that partying over

here!). So, great for Rose who not only won half-a-mil but also climbed to joint 3rd in the world rankings and great practice for this week's Open that starts in Hoylake on Thursday. Cricket now and England dug themselves out of a big hole in the 1st Test against India as, chasing an Indian 1st innings of 457, the Red Rose were 202 for 7 and looking down and out on an incredibly docile Nottingham wicket but thanks to a new world record last wicket partnership of 198 between bowler James Anderson (highest ever first class innings of 49) scoring 81 and yet another century from Joe Root (154 no) they saved the day and the match petered out in to a draw. Captain Cook seems to be on a sticky wicket at the mo', as he hasn't scored a ton in 11 tests and this result is now 9 winless Tests on the trot, with 3 draws and 6 losses so let's hope he can pull himself and the team round by Thursday when the 2nd Test starts at

Lords. Cycling and oh no, whatever happened to Chris Froome at the Tour de France! All I can say is that after three crashes in 2 days, resulting in a broken hand, a dislocated shoulder and Gawd knows what else, our hero and title holder has had to withdraw and now leaves the race to Mr Jonny Foreigner! Actually, as it stands at the time of writing, to a Frenchman, Tony Gallopin (sounds as if he should be on a horse at Ascot not a cycle!) who wears the Yellow Jersey, closely followed by Italian Vicenzo Nibali, the previous leader. Bad news also for Spain's Alberto Contador, who crashed earlier today and looks as if he may be out as well. However, at least some good news for us Brits, as Peter Kennaugh, overlooked by Team Sky for the TdF, won the Tour of Austria. One of my spies, “Disco” Dave, aka “The Inspector calls”, had the

honour of spotting that delectable ex-tennis player, Anna Kournikova, the only female to have amassed a personal fortune without winning a Major. Hmm, wonder what her ex-peers think about that? Well, Sports Fans, that'll have to do for this week as I need to get on with my final World Cup Report and time's running out, so, until next week, ¡hasta luego! Good luck to the Ibiza Cricket club who travel to Holland next week to compete in an international tournament

Huge thanks to Jerry from all at the Ibizan and the many readers who have enjoyed his world cup reports. As a gesture of our thanks this sporting lass will lavish you with some attention, but we’ll spare your blushes with this surplus to requirements Neymar shirt—just in case ‘er who must be obeyed’ is watching.

Jezza’ World Cup Report

"Jeremy Parmenter Second Semi-Final Argentina 0 Holland 0 ( a.e.t.) – Argentina win 4-2 on penalties A match that had everything except goals; tension, excitement, pain, ecstasy, joy, disappointment, tears, extra-time and penalties altho' after Germany's demolition of Brazil in the first Semi it was a bit of a letdown, to such an extent in the second half that I dozed off! Overall, Holland played the better and probably deserved to win as they had more possession and more territory but Argentina had the chances. Mascherano was superb, as was Vraal for the Dutch but Messi only flashed in and out of the game, and so to penalties and what a mistake by van Gaal, letting Vraal, a defender, take the first which was saved. Apparently two of the 5 Dutch penalty-takers refused to take the first one and with Argentina scoring 4 it was left to Schneider to keep Holland in it but he fluffed it and the rest is history; Holland go home, van Gaal goes to Man U and my pre-WC tip now face the mighty Germans. The Final Germany 1 Argentina 0 (a.e.t.) So, the best team in the tournament won, but my, oh my, it was close! Great Final and a privilege to watch, altho' I must own up to it, I got my timings completely wrong and missed the first half which made “'er indoors” chuckle a bit. World Cup specialist, you've

www.theibizan.com

gotta be joking! Anyway, apparently the first half was superb and although Germany had more possession and territory, Argentina had more outright chances, especially the two one-on-ones for Messi and Higuain which, for players of their class, should have both been put away. But, as we all know, if you don't take your chances, you don't deserve to win! I must mention here Manuel Neuer, the German 'keeper, because altho' he proved once and for all that he's the best in the world, in my humble opinion, he should have been red-carded for his knee-up assault on the luckless Higuain and what a difference that would have made. And so to extra-time, and in the second period, just as we were thinking “ello, penalties again”, a moment of sheer magic from two unheralded German substitutes; Chelsea's Schurrle making headway down the left, ghosting past Man City's hapless Zabaletta and an exquisite chip in to the box for Goetze to take the ball on his chest and thump a superb winner with his left foot past Romero, the Argentina 'keeper. Sumptious and a winner worthy of any WC Final and a goal that finally broke the record of a European team never having won a WC in South America. As for Argentina, Mascherano was again brilliant and my midfielder of the tourney; Messi was in and out of the game but looked listless and tired, Romero was superb in goal and if they had taken their chances, they would have won. But, take nothing away from Germany as they thoroughly deserved the Cup as they were, by some way, the best team, scored the most goals (18), showed the best temperament and played as a team rather than individuals so congrats to them and, don't be surprised if they stay top of the tree for the next few years, a la España, as I expect them to walk away with the Euros in 2016 and probably the WC in Russia 2018. Jezza's Conclusions! A superb World Cup made even more so by the Brazilian fans, even though their heroes didn't make it to the Final as hosts. Right from the word go, the Group stages were brilliant, with goals and saves galore, the so-called minnows (Costa Rica, Algeria, Greece, USA,

Page 19

Nigeria) becoming big fish and the big fish (England, Uruguay, Italy, Spain, Portugal) becoming minnows. High points: Golden Boot winner Colombia's James Rodriguez's goal of the Finals, German sportsmanship as they consoled the Argentinians after the Final, Tim Cahill's goal for Australia against Holland, van Persie's swallow header against Spain, Ghana's superb 2-2 draw with eventual winners Germany and Nigeria's 3-2 loss to Argentina, ITV's commentary team of Andy Townsend and Clive Tyldesley, and finally, the Beeb's pundit Alan Hansen in his final appearance. Low points: My “heart” teams of England, Spain and Nigeria going out, my tip Argentina not winning, England's demise as “also-rans”, Roy Hodgson's team selection, Suarez and his Hannibal Lecter impersonation, Brazil proving beyond doubt that they will probably never replicate the teams of the '70's and '80's, Neymar's injury, Messi's inconsistency (how he was voted Player of the Tournament, I still can't work out!), the fact that FIFA's Blatter is going to stand as President yet again, and finally, that the best player in the world in my book, Cristiano Ronaldo, didn't make it thru' to the knock-out rounds. So, that's it for Brazil 2014, hope you enjoyed our coverage and a big thank you to the staff of the Ibiza Sun for getting it right, according to the positive comments from numerous of our readers. Until Euro 2016 then, when, if we're still around, a repeat could be on the cards!

Fiestas in Portinax

"Nicole Torres This Saturday Portinax will celebrate their fiestas with a sea procession in which the lauds – small fishing boats – accompany the Virgen del Carmen, the Marian image protector of fishermen and patron of the sea. There are also water sport competitions on the beach. A special bus line, running all night from Ibiza to Portinax and back, has been set up for this Saturday. Don’t miss it! The Virgen del Carmen is also celebrated in the Ibiza Port, Es Cubells and San Antonio, with religious processions and mass.

corts me to a water villa raised on stilts above the lagoon. She reads the list of activities previously booked, including a private dinner on the beach. When she leaves, I throw myself on a hand woven settee overlooking the private infinity pool. I then muster up some energy to shower and change into a floral dress. I make my way to the beach, where I see four tiki torches surrounding a white linen table. At the table, a waiter wearing white gloves pours me a glass of white wine. When two

meals are served, I smile and drink more wine. Shortly after, I see someone walking along the beach. As the person approaches, I realize that it’s the same man from the plane. I laugh. He stops at my table and looks at me quizzically. “Having dinner alone?” he asks. “No,” I said. “I’m waiting for my lover.” I’ve never said anything so coquettish, but I like it. He smiles, takes a seat and I offer him a glass of wine. By the time we finished, we are both hammered. He walks me back to my villa. I invite him inside,

stripping off my dress as I seductively stroll toward the pool, jumping naked into the cool water and he quickly follows. He pulls me into his smooth chest and envelops me in a long passionate kiss. Then, he exits the pool, extending a hand to help me out. He pushes me to the settee and I lay down, scooting to the middle. He lays next to me, close enough to let his heat warm me. Silence blossomed between us. He rolled over and said, “Hello wife.” “Hello husband,” I say with a giggle.

Subway N 4 Opens in Ibiza Town "Nicole Torres Subway have opened their fourth restaurant on the island in Ibiza Town. Situated in Avenida Ignacio Wallis, on the block next to the Apple store, this establishment is more family friendly than their San Antonio and Playa d’en Bossa restaurants, with a fantastic children’s play area and a big terrace. I have to admit it was my first time eating at Subway and I had never walked in to a fast food restaurant that smelled so well! Instead of your usual greasy stink, it was an inviting and tasty aroma. I had a really

hard time choosing what I wanted inside the bread – it all looked so good! Only to realise when I had chosen what I wanted inside the bread, that there are six different delicious-looking types of bread! So I ended up with a flat bread jam, cheese, turkey and bacon and a pepsi. All the food is fresh and you can tell, and the variety of ingredients make the choice difficult if you weren’t sure what you wanted before you walked in. It was a great turnout for an opening. They had Cachirulo the clown making over thirty children laugh their heads off – and some of us adults too! There was a

women painting children’s faces like tigers or princesses. The whole experience made me want to be five or six again – especially because I wanted my face painted! I spoke to Hope, the brain behind the Ibiza Subways, and she told me all the earnings from the opening were being donated to Caritas, in her words, to give back to Ibiza for giving her so much. Here at The Ibizan we are sure Ibiza will be giving Subway and Hope much more if they continue on the same road they are now!
