The Rain In Spain Won’t Go Down The Drain
33.8 Litres Per Square Metre Per Hour Roads Impassable & Drivers Trapped Drainage System Overwhelmed We might have the best clubs in the world, great hotels,
gourmet restaurants, fantastic beaches and views but if it rains heavily and intensely for even a relatively short period of time, the drainage system in Ibiza turns parts of our urban and tourist areas into flood zones. The water
does not flow away as it should, drains burst and we are left with rivers of drainage water flowing down our streets and pavements and in some cases entering into the premises alongside the roads. continued over

With more rain predicted and having been on high alert for rains and storms this week, the island has already been reduced to chaotic scenes. Different areas of the island have experienced problems including cars trapped by water in under passes with drivers needing to be rescued, main roads impassable because of water, rock slides on country roads, pedestrians walking knee high in water in parts of Ibiza Town, trees uprooted, urban and business premises flood damaged
causing many to close. For several days the short tunnel leading from Puig dens Valls into Ibiza Town (pictured) was closed to traffic because it flooded so easily in the rain causing major traffic diversions. Several accidents occurred in the rain with the most spectacular being a soft top Beatle which did several somersaults before landing right way up after skidding in the rain. The fire service and police have been working constantly over
Drug Seizures Guardia Agent Arrested In Drug Special Operation. Three Spanish citizens, including a Guardia Civil Agent who works at the airport, were detained as a special police operation, using officers from Madrid, which was carried out in the early hours of the morning at the airport when a private jet landed from Switzerland carrying what is believed to be tens if not hundreds of kilos of cocaine. Details of the operation are being kept secret but it is known that the detained men were not interviewed by a judge on the island after being arrested as normally happens. Instead they were taken to Madrid for questioning and to appear before the higher courts because of the international nature of the crime. In another special police action only just made public, the police discovered 250 kilos of
Cocaine in a flat in Santa Eulalia on the 15th September which resulted in the detention of three Spanish men. Other drugs, cash and electronic equipment were also found in the flat. The case is still being kept secret with more detentions expected as this is one of the biggest drug finds ever in Ibiza with a possible street value of 12,500,000€. Drugs Hidden In Drinks. A 32 year old Portuguese man and a 25 year Brit have been detained after police found drugs in their possession hidden in soft drink containers. In total 60 ecstasy pills, 20 grams of cocaine, 6 grams of methamphetamine and 2 grams of ketamin, as well as 2290€ were seized when the police stopped the men in their car at a rural check point.
Puig dens Valls tunnel days to alleviate the problems. The rain has been spread all over the island in heavy intermittent down falls with up to 33,8, litres per square metre falling per hour in Ibiza, 17,6 litres psm falling per hour in San Carles and 16,8 litres psm in San Antonio. Luckily some sunny dry spells have compensated for the rains and put a smile on tourist’s faces. The Consell Island Government has announced a plan to spend 130,000€ on clearing and cleaning the natural drainage channels on the island. Whilst this will help when it rains, there is still a lot to do with the man made drainage system. San Jose Woman Found Dead. A 57 year old woman called “Silvia Anelise” was reported missing by her family on Sunday after her dog returned home without her. She was last seen walking her dog behind the petrol station on the outskirts of the village of Sant Josep on Saturday at around 14h. The emergency services mounted a search for Silvia, including the use of a helicopter, eventually finding her body late on Monday in the countryside near where she was last seen. Initial reports suggest that cause of death was suicide. 3 Language System in Doubt. The future of the policy of education of youngsters in Castillian Spanish, Catalan and English throughout the Baleares, known as the TIL, is now in doubt. A court ruling has found procedural faults in the Balearic Parliament bill, passed to create this policy, and has suspended its application. Effectively, because of the deci-
Typically British scene, in Ibiza, credit J A Riera sion, schools could stop teaching in the 3 languages as of now, a choice which would apparently make lots of the teaching profession and parents happy. However, the Government is appealing the court ruling and is also urging schools to wait to change teaching policy as this years teaching program for the islands and the provision of resources has been based on teaching in the 3 languages. The political fall out of this court ruling has been huge especially as at one point 100,000 persons had demonstrated against the TIL. The Education Minister, Joanna Maria Camps, was sacked and replaced by Núria Riera, the present spokeswoman for the Government who will keep this role and become Education Minister. A close political supporter of PP Conservative President Bauza, Núria Riera has already said that schools should continue with the TIL this year as they have been financed and resourced to teach in this way and for this academic year her department can not change things. PP Conservative President Bauzà said that the majority achieved in the last elections gave his government the right to introduce the three language teaching system. He went on to say that, at the end of the day the three language teaching system was designed to give our youngsters the chance to get better jobs and futures by being fluent in three languages. 1000+ Fakes. The police in San Antonio have detained a Senegalese man for having 1000+ false items and a large number of stolen goods in
his possession. Including watches, computers tablets, laptops, jewellery, mobile phones, cameras, fashion accessories etc, the loot was ready for transportation off the island in a container when the police arrested the man. More detentions are expected to follow. Talamanca Beach Problems. After the breakage of a sewage pipe caused pollution at the Talamanca beach over a week ago, the beach was closed for several days whilst the state of the water was tested. Given the Ok early last week, the beach reopened for bathing only to closed again the next day when tests said it was still not safe. Further tests have now allowed the beach to reopen definitely and it is safe to bathe with caution. The Town Hall is investigating how the pipe broke and are requesting help from the maritime authorities to see if it was an anchor from a yacht which did the damage and also making sure the leek has nothing to do with the nearby municipal sewage plant. James Blunt's Beach Party. After celebrating his wedding to Sofía Wellesley at her families home in Mallorca, the after party held by singer James Blunt at the S'Estanyol beach in the borough of Santa Eulalia on our island has caused a media stir which has led to the authorities getting involved. Social media reports by public using this small beach claimed that the preparations and party itself left them no room to enjoy a swim or the sand. The beach is public land and right of way but the authorities appear to have no record of

anyone asking for permission to hold this celebration on the sand and are now investigating the complaints before possibly fining the organisers of the event. Police Get Snake Training. Police in Santa Eulalia have been given a pioneering course here on the island on how to handle
snakes that are wild in the borough and are increasingly been sighted and reported to them by the public. Practical handling hints and safety measures were explained and demonstrated by experts to the police so that they can locate and safely catch a serpent when they get a report of a sighting. The agents were

shown typical hiding places of these normally timid and relatively harmless snakes as well as where they are most likely to breed and lay eggs. Quad Accident. Two young British men, aged 21 and 23 years old, were injured and left unconscious after they failed to negotiate the Cala Gracio roundabout in San Antonio and crashed against a wall at 3.30am. The roundabout was on the men's way home to Can Tomas but it is not sure if they

They are overpowered, totally unstable and hired to unqualified, inexperienced and distracted tourists to ride like maniacs. Less Nights In Hotels. During August, the hotels of Ibiza and Formentera had 1.773.746 overnight stays. Though a huge figure, it is in fact 8,2% less than in 2013 and,
on first sight, contradicts that 8,4% more tourists stayed in hotels this year. The reason is that though there were more tourists in hotels in August 2014, the average tourist stayed only 5,8 days which is down on 2013 leading to the recorded drop in over night stays. Importantly, hotels have been able to increase their prices and charge more for overnight stays when compared to 2013 or to July this year. The overall average price was 112,3€ per night.
Parasailing Skipper Says Not At Fault. Actions Saved The Day. As reported briefly as late news in last week’s Ibizan, a parasailing accident occurred in the bay of San Antonio last Wednesday. The accident caused considerable discussion on Social media, some of it extremely critical, and caught the attention of the print and television press. Today we had the opportunity of talking directly with skipper James Killen who presents a very different picture of what happened. “When we took the couple out there was no sign or forecast of bad weather. It was a very calm sea with hardly any wind. We had them flying 300m up when I noticed the first very thin line of bad weather on the horizon. I said we’re getting them in now and we turned for home but before we knew it the weather was on us. It was here so quickly, in seconds.” Jimmy then when on to explain his manoeuvres in relation to the wind and drag of the parachute—all a bit too technical for this landlubber to follow— but reinforced by eyewitnesses who watched the accident unfold saying that the crew tried hard to control the situation by putting the boat face into the wind and by coming close to the shore presumably to get some shelter. Jimmy continued “it usually takes 2 minutes to get the ‘chute in, but after 15 minutes of fighting I just knew it wasn’t going to happen. A parasail line is like a fishing reel, designed with a brake to feed out if the wind is too strong to avoid it breaking. I knew I had to get the parachute collapsed, it is the most important thing to do, and the
only way I could see to do it was to let it out to hit something. It was so frustrating—we had them as close in as 15meters at one point.” At this point witnesses described the couple as being “thrown around like puppets suspended around 15 metres in the air”. Conditions by this time were atrocious with intense rain and very strong winds. Jimmy said his next step was the result of experience spanning over 30 years parasailing. “I had them lined up with the Satellite dishes and Antennae on top of the Milord hotel. I knew that the satellite dish would be the perfect way to collapse the parachute which would drop them safely onto the roof of the Milord. It was going perfectly until the last second when a very strong gust banged them against the wall and ultimately the rope did break.” Other reports stated that the rope had sheared earlier resulting in the couple being carried by wind over one building and into free air before being snagged on the Milord rooftop. Jimmy said this was not true. “These reports are rubbish. They don’t know what they are talking about. It was an unfortunate accident at sea, but accidents happen and I dealt with it the best way possible. I started parasailing in 1980 and in my time I’ve even taught Commandoes how to parasail onto landing craft. I know what I’m doing. There was nothing wrong with my equipment, everything has been checked by the marine authorities, it was a new rope only ten days ago. When I went
to the (Marine Authority—sorry I forget the name of it-ed) and the Guardia they shook my hand and congratulated me. I saved their life. “ Witnesses described the couple dangling from parasail ropes whilst the wind entangled the parasail around the structures on the hotel roof. Emergency services were soon on the scene (the second unit and the police arrived about 5 minutes after the first), and the couple began to move showing signs of life as they dangled against the wall. Hotel workers reached them within minutes cutting them free and bringing them down to the lobby to wait treatment from the emergency services. Witnesses in the overlooking apartments reported that there had been a loud bang and sparks when the parasail hit the aerials and other structures on the roof. Official reports say that the couple suffered head and back injuries. Press reports that the couple were in intensive care are considered to be incorrect given witness statements, and way off Jimmy’s account. “He was pretty well untouched, but she had a cut on her eye. We wanted to get her to hospital to be checked over but she refused to go until she had her
handbag, as it had her passport and documents in it, and the handbag was still on the boat. One of my Pals from another firm went and got her the handbag and she then agreed to go to hospital. We went along too, my girlfriend speaks German so she was helping to translate. The girl had two stitches but was otherwise fine. They left the very next day.” Jimmy also wanted to have his

say re where the blame lay. “People shouldn’t be blaming me they should be blaming the weather forecasters. This was like that Michael Fish day when he said everything was going to be fine. We always check the weather and there was no indication of possible problems. And it goes to show you just can’t believe everything you read in the papers.” Except this one of course. 2013 Library Photo: Jimmy returning from trip with multiple sclerosis sufferer Sandy Brown. Sandy contacted the Sun when parasailing companies refused to take her aloft due to her disability. Jimmy was pleased to oblige and refused payment.

ith its stylish FrenchItalian cuisine David’s Restaurant/Pizzeria located in the heart of San Antonio has once again proved a popular choice for those in the know this season. David’s ticks all the boxes—great food, express service, a lively atmosphere and prices that are just right. When talking of prices and David’s you just can’t help but mention their superb value daily menu which, at 12.50€, has
been a workers favourite for many years—and no one knows how to hunt out a bargain better than the workers. Available daily till 8.30pm the menu starts with a choice of garlic bread, mixed or tomato salad, then for the main two options of spaghetti or a mozzarella and tomato pizza to which you add 2 of your own favourite additional toppings. The desert is one of a selection of caramel cream, ice cream or fruit of the day, and the price even includes a beer, soft drink or wine and a chupito to end the meal with aplomb. The menu is extensive and their pizzas can be cooked on thin crust or as a Calzone. However there is far more on offer than you would normally find at a regular pizza joint with our faves including the hot Goat’s Cheese salad, a simply sublime combination of lettuce, tomato, bacon, mushrooms and hot goat’s cheese, though I’m always tempted by the Salmon with
dill oil and toast from the starters and the Magret of Duck with mashed apples and honey, - well it just speaks for itself. Other top choices include sirloin steak “perigourdine” style with mushroom sauce truffle and foie-gras (don’t be put off by the fancy ingredients—you can’t grumble at 20.50€ for such a splendid steak). This, as with the entire menu, is prepared by the creative kitchen using the finest and freshest ingredients in Ibiza. The restaurant itself consists of two parts – the comfortable lounge, colourful and fresh, or the bustling terrace which is closed off and heated during cooler months, and during the heat of the summer refreshed by a vapour spray system making it the perfect place for a bit of al fresco dining. These are just some of the reasons that David’s has remained one of the most popular restaurants on the island for couples, families and larger groups – but
don’t just take our word for it, head down there to try their delicious food for yourself and we promise you won’t be disappointed. You can find David's at calle Madrid 12 in San Antonio. Tel 971 340470, FB Pizzeria David's

Expert Predicts Sales Surge Fernando Encinar, director of studies for the leading Idealista property website, predicts a surge in property sales before the end of 2014 due to changes in Spain’s financial law relating to properties purchased before 1994. In essence the new law will mean a big loss for anybody selling a house which they purchased 20 years or more ago. Encinar expects the law to come into force on 1 January 2015. From this date, the abatement tax applied to the sale of properties that were purchased before 1994 will be eliminated and the Government will alter the method of calculating the level of capital gains is tax payable. In simple terms, the discounts that were applied to properties purchased before this year will be removed, meaning that the seller will have to pay a much higher amount of money to the Government in tax. The English language business and property website on the pulse of Spain explain the changes in detail. “Up until now, a reduction coefficient was applied when calculating how much capital gains would be achieved on such a sale. This coefficient took into consideration the variation of prices over this long period of time. With the elimination of the reduction coefficient, the cal-
culation will be made on the difference of purchase and sale price. So, for those people that sell their old property (purchased 20 years or more prior) after 1 January 2015, they will now have to pay 55% more in tax – unless they can close the sale before 31 December 2014. It is clearer to see with an example. You buy an 80 m sq property in 1990 for 75,000 euro (933 euro/ sq m). At today’s values (1,459 euro/sq m), the property would be worth 116,000 euro. That’s a gain of 41,000 euro in 24 years. Using the current calculations, the taxable amount would be reduced to 10,459 euro, and after applying the 21% VAT on patrimonial gains, the final amount to pay in tax would be 2,375 euro. However, with the new law, if the same property is sold in 2015, the seller would be taxed on the full 41,000 euro gain, leaving him with a tax bill of 8,900 euro – almost four times the previous amount.” Encinar predicts a surge of people trying to offload properties before the year end, which he claims could lead to property prices being reduced substantially. He goes on to say that any increase this year is likely to be offset by a reduction in the early part of 2015, and then anticipates the general rise to continue again in 2016.
Valencia, with 4,231, Cataluña, 4,230 and Madrid, with 3,995. Chief of studies, Fernando Encinar, from Idealista.com says that this is good news, yet we still have to be cautious. “Figures are exceptional this year because last year was so bad in terms of property purchases. It was, in fact, one of the worst years in Spanish real-estate history, meaning that most figures will come out positive when compared to them.” He went on to say that “Many people are slowly returning to real estate as a means of safe investment, taking advantage of the low interest rates around at present”. Floor Mortgages—and who applies them. If you are looking to take out a Spanish mortgage you need to have an understanding of Floor mortgages. Despite the controversy last year surrounding floor clauses contained within some mortgages granted by a number of Spanish banks, they have still not been made illegal, and banks can continue to apply them. In fact, 4 of Spain’s major banks still do. In May 2013, the Spanish Supreme Court declared all floor clauses in mortgages that did not comply with the required transparency requisites null and void – but not illegal. This sentence affected 400,000 mortgages from the BBVA 90,000 from Novagalicia Banco and approximately 100,000 from Cajamar. As soon as the sentence was passed, some banks decided to eliminate mortgage floor clauses altogether from all of their loans. Nevertheless, there are still other that choose to apply this unpopular, and basically crafty, clause. The way in which banks sold mortgages with a floor interest rate was to tell clients that interest rates were rising and that by taking out a mortgage with this

clause would mean that if interest rates rose above the rate that they then imposed, the client would only have to pay the lower rate at which the floor clause stood. What the clients at the time didn’t know, though, was that interest rates were about to drop – and fast at that. However, whilst there was a maximum ceiling rate in place, so was there a minimum floor rate,
What Price Ibiza? We had a look at available property prices in Ibiza. The very cheapest property currently available on Idealista.com is a studio apartment in Cala Vedella at 44,999€ (1,125€/m2). 1 bed apartments start at 75,000€ for a 52m2 property in San Vicente (we ignored the 65,000€ 1 bed as at 25m2 something seems amiss). 2 beds are priced from 89,000€ in San Antonio at 60m2. The cheapest detached house with land we could find in our search was 210,000 for a 2 bed in the north, and for a larger family home 280,000 for a 4 bed property in the south. There are many duplex and terraced houses staring at 80,000m2 for 1 bed properties. In terms of availability the website has most properties for sale in Santa Eulalia, 465, followed by San Jose with 387, Ibiza town with 288, San Antonio 135, and as might be expected far fewer which meant that if, say, the floor rate was 2% interest, but the Euribor and benchmark interest rates fell below this (like now, the Euribor is around 0.5%), the client would still have to pay the 2% rate and lose out on a lot of savings. According to a new report from Kelisto, the four banks that still apply mortgage floor clauses are La Caixa, Banco Sabadell,
Bankia and Banco Mare Nostrum (BMN). Whilst floor rates are not illegal, they must be transparent. The bank that provides the greatest amount of transparency is Banco Sabadell, followed by BMN and Bankia, who allow the client to negotiate the rate of the floor clause. La Caixa’s mortgages with the floor clause in place show the
most ambiguity, so clients are advised to take more care if taking a mortgage out with this bank, especially now when the Euribor is so low. Furthermore, 80% of mortgages taken out with the aforementioned banks contain this clause, therefore, depriving around 5 million families of savings on their mortgage repayments.
Kelisto advises people who are looking to take out a mortgage to consider the following: • Look for mortgages where the differential rate is less than 2% • Look for mortgages that don’t require you to take out additional products such as insurance etc • Check how much commission

Faced with only months to live James set up a charity fund with the aim of raising a million for Brain Cancer charities. He also got a wish list together and having ticked off many of his football wishes—meeting Ferguson, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville (poss a Man Utd fan?) and even Ronaldo doing the Ice Bucket for him, his attentions turned to another passion— dance music and DJing.
James wanted to DJ live in Ibiza and in stepped Jon Besant—he of History of House, a big hit at Ocean Beach earlier this year, and clearly very nice man (photo left). Jon called on some more very nice people at Mambo and lo and behold James was behind the decks headlining his very own set on the sunset strip. James took a moment away from the decks for a chat. I asked him how the trip had been, and what was next on the wishlist. “It’s been the best 5 days of my life.” James said through a beam-

The second Ibiza Music Video Festival returns to the island for two days on October 10th-11th at the Grand Palladium Palace Hotel in Playa D’en Bossa. The festival is all about developing talent, exchanging knowledge and rewarding creativity, celebrating all aspects of music video production. Aimed at anyone and everyone with an interest in music videos, from record label commissioners to aspiring young filmmakers, day tickets cost only 30€ or 50€ for the full festival. Day one is structured around The Academy - educational talks with industry professionals looking into pre-production, production and post-production. This will be followed by a Q&A session. Day two includes a series of interactive workshops, focusing on all elements of making music videos from makeup to marketing. The full programme is available on the IMVF

Visit Vietnam, Las Vegas, DJ a full moon party in Thailand and go on a date with Emma Watson.” James reassured me of his honourable intentions. “Just a date you understand, I don’t want a relationship, or to split her up with her boyfriend, because I do have a habit of doing that.” Don’t want to end with a patronising cliché—so just brilliant. And as best we can do, here’s that date with Emma (hope you can’t see the join).
website, plus there’ll be ample opportunities for meeting the other attendees and networking. The festival also includes a music video competition, which has received over 450 entries and will be judged by a panel of industry experts. The winners will be announced at an award ceremony at Yemanja on Cala Jondal on Saturday October 11th. The nominees for each of the ten awards can be seen on the IMVF website. Tickets for the award ceremony can be purchased separately for 20€. Launched in October 2013 by music and film Producer Rupert Bryan and his collaborative partner Elizabeth Fear, this is now a global online and interactive music video festival, competition and awards’ ceremony, celebrating all aspects of music video production. In its first year, IMVF had 300 attendees. Promo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjLC6vgjrNU See the website for full details and tickets www.ibizamusicvideofestival.com

Seems I can’t deny, some days just don’t feel right, seems I feel much better,
At night
Sam Divine, defected resident... Nick Gibbs Defected have a pretty special place in my heart. For several years whatever they put out made it’s way into my weekly play selection on the decks at our local record store, and a good percentage then made it to the till. This included some all time faves—and award yourself a prize if you’ve figured our nightlife section of the paper is named after the Shapeshifters classic defected track At Night (seems I can’t deny, etc). Sadly, and probably top of my regret I didn’t make it list for 2014, I didn’t get to either the Defected in the House, or Glitterbox nights that have both been a big success at Boom last year. I might have made it to last night’s closing, but instead interviewed their resident Sam Divine prior to her weekly Savannah pre-party appearance, then came back to the office to type it up. That doesn’t make sense somehow. Perhaps I should've left this page blank and gone for a boogie. If there is an empty page in the first October edition of 2015 you’ll know why. Defected describe you as a “guaranteed floor-filler and party starter”. Do you like that description? SD: I do like that, I think that’s pretty true. It’s nice to be the resident at Booom, It’s nice to dig deep and play those records you wouldn’t normally in your peak time set, I get to set the tone for the evening, yeah I like playing warm up. What do I get when I come to see Sam Divine? SD: For me it’s a feeling and a vibe. Back in the day you could take people on a journey but it’s not that so much now as you’ve only got 2 hours to do it. I try and cram all the best records I’ve got into the set. I’m happy to say I’m a party DJ. I’m not underground, not commercial, straight down the middle. A lot of my stuff is very vocal, people can sing along to it, it get’s the girls dancing. I’m really happy when I’m playing. What’s not to be happy about when you are playing records you love? Tell us a little about Defected. Simon must be one of the industry’s more hands on bosses. SD: It’s a dream come true. My first house record was a defected vinyl, Barbara Tucker, Precious Love. I fell in love with it and that took me into Defected as a label. I did 5 seasons in San An in Hush and every Tuesday was my night off, luckily the same night Defected were playing Pacha. I was introduced to Simon who flew me back to London to play Ministry of Sound and the following Monday I was signed to the artist roster as their first female DJ. Simon is one of the hardest working people I know. He is my mentor. He has given me the confidence to play for myself, be myself. The only two people I take advice from are my Dad and my Boss.
You played Mambo for several years warming up for Frankie Knuckles amongst others. SD: That was really special. Frankie asked my agent in London if I could do the warm ups for him. That is something I will take to my grave. Frankie always said to play with your heart on your sleeve, to play the music you love and not worry about anybody else. I get that you have to play to the crowd, but when you play with so much love and passion you cant go wrong. Frankie was such a wise guy. We had a really cool relationship. No1 house legend! Are there any DJs you want to play with but haven’t yet? SD: Kerri Chandler. We’re really good friends. I’ve played with so many I’ve admired but I’d love to play with Kerri. Tell us about your Ibiza Journey. SD: I first came here on holiday in 2001. I was in Eden every single night. I loved it. I was more into harder stuff, trance, back then. I did my first season in 2005. Here (Savannah Backroom), Hush, most of the West End bars and often for free or drinks. I got the residency at Hush in 2006, which you could say is when I went pro, and it gave me so much experience. I learnt how to keep the dance floor, spotting if somebody was about to finish their drink so to play a classic to keep them in. I had it rocking from 10 to 6, 6 nights a week. So in total 5 full seasons then for the last 5 I’ve been flying backwards and forwards every week. You talk a lot about warm ups. SD: Don’t get me wrong I love the headline peak slots I’m playing every week, but Ibiza has been more about warm ups
and I love it. It gives me the chance to play the deep soulful house I love, it’s not about smashing it out, it’s about setting the tone for the DJs to come on later and do their thing. What do you like to do in your Ibiza downtime? SD: I love going to Es Vedra and Formentera, going out on boats with my friends. On my nights off I love going to restaurants. Just relaxing really. On the nights I’m playing I like to party—after I’ve finished my set of course, another great reason for playing the warm up, I’ve finished early so can get out on the dance floor and enjoy myself. Where did the idea for La Vita come from? SD: My Nan had breast cancer. I wanted to do something that was totally about giving something back. We have an annual party and we’ve raised over £30,000. I’m an ambassador for the breast cancer research charity now too. What’s coming up? SD: It’s just busy, busy, busy. I’m pretty well booked up right through 2015.

Community Postbag Kooky Looky Dear editor, I live in England and have owned a property in Ibiza for some 27 Years. I would like to make mine and others I have spoken to, feelings regarding the plague of people coming here from African country's selling sun glasses and bracelets on the streets of St Antonio. In a space of 30 minutes I was approached by no less than 9 men selling watches and sun glasses. This ruined my and my friends’ lunch. Later on my way to my car we had to pass some 11 African women trying to sell hair strings and bracelets. This to a man who is bald. I fear a great number of people feel it intimidating. I have no doubt in my mind that a living is not possible selling these items. This leads me to think they are selling other products. I feel the only way to control the people is to license them and limit the numbers. In my opinion
View from the Pew Diana Robbins Flying in low over Ibiza by night we saw two very high poles lit up and changing colour, red and blue and white – very dramatic, but where were they and what could they be? Some days later, as we drove around San Antonio, we spotted two excessively high ‘rugby posts’’ but it was only as we drove back from San Rafael one evening and saw them illuminated with their bright neon lights that we realized that they were the ones we had seen from the aeroplane on our first night. But what were they? Surely they were not just there for decoration! Then, as our car was parked, we saw in the distance, something catapulted high above the top of these posts. As we drove past we saw the it ‘The

Slingshot’ and the ‘something’ was two people strapped into a sort of ejector seat and being hurled into the air at 160 km an hour. To me that is plain terrifying – but they appeared to enjoy the sensation, and even pay good Euros to experience it. I couldn’t help but notice the sign on the pyramid building behind, ‘El Paradis’. Maybe they thought they would be nearer to heaven? But there is a real way. As Jesus was giving His life for us, He said to a thief dying beside Him, “Today you will be with me in Paradise”. And that was a free gift. The only qualification is to ask Jesus to be your Saviour and to put your trust in Him. Everyone riding on the Slingshot is exercising enormous faith, faith in the machine, faith in the operator, faith that nothing will break. As Christians we put our faith in Jesus He will never let anyone down. It’s Good To Talk Kate Stillman There is not letter this week so I thought I would take an opportunity to talk about something that seems to crop up around this time of year here in Ibiza. The end of summer slump! Many islanders work unbelievable hours over the summer, the candle not only burns at both ends but it often meets in the middle and that can lead to all sorts of issues – but most importantly family and friendships can suffer and irreparable damage can be done. This may all be sounding a little familiar to you and I imagine you are wondering what you can do. Firstly and most importantly take time time to reflect on where you are and how you are
interacting with those around you who you consider to be of value emotionally. I can’t emphasize strongly enough how important it is to really take time and explore who you are, because it is only when you are reasonably clear about how you interact with the world and the people in it i.e. what situations are easy and what situations might be more challenging, that you can then make a choice about changing aspects of your behaviour. Firstly remind yourself you are really important, people care about you and you may have been difficult to live with over the summer months but it doesn’t all end when the clubs shut and easy jet stops. You then need time to recover, time to repair physically and emotionally so you can be the person you want to be for those around you who matter. Secondly don’t just stop with out a plan, you have been running on high levels of adrenalin so you
need something or you can easily slip into the slump so ensure you have things planned that you enjoy. Finally thank those who have had to put up with you over the summer showing people around you that they are appreciated will stand you in good stead for a happy relaxed winter. There is loads going on over the winter and over the next few weeks—I have listed some events below that may be helpful. Stay well, Kate

The Far East Two Old Rockers Two years ago we reviewed Changing Times a book written by Jim Bailey recalling his memoirs as a young seaman. Jim’s latest book is to be launched with a book signing at Bar Mariposa, Pueblo Asparagus, Cala Llonga, on Tuesday 7th October between 11-30am and 2-30pm. The title is “Follow your dream” An account of his solo crossing of

Very few people have built their own boat and sailed singlehanded across the Atlantic. All

tended to come in September. The locals are extremely happy and grateful for the rain as in some parts of the Island it is only the third rainfall of the year. No consolation to you I know but if you plan to come back to holiday in Ibiza remember it is probably wise to avoid the end of September. St Miguel day is on the 28th September and I can count on less than one hand the days that have been dry on that day in the last ten years. Meanwhile the poor weather hasn’t stopped some idiot graffiti people daubing and scrawling on the beautiful Ibicenco walls. I refuse to call them artists they are very few “Banksys” among them. I can

This particular mess has appeared in a small Camino in the middle of nowhere and can serve no purpose other than to satisfy the strange urges of one individual. I would have photographed it to show you but I didn’t want to promote or encourage the perpetrator or others like him. Well I have got that off my chest! I hope you still have a fun week even if it is only wading through the puddles! Yours, Juan

the look of the programme it will be a fine shin-dig with literally something for everyone. Music is spread around several locations—the Sunset strip at Mambos, Arenal Beach, The Fountains Paseo, and the intriguing Rock Parade in the centre of the West End. Headlining the event are Boy George playing at Mambo on the 9th Brand New Heavies on the Ibiza Rocks Sunset stage on the 10th. Saturday the whole thing goes Hippy with a Flower Power night and most events and performances are free of charge. Rockaoke—you can figure it out—goes on every night and Sunday things get a little more refined with the San Antonio municipal orchestra. Kids are well catered for with activities in their own dedicated area every day and divided into 3 age groups, up to 5, 6 to 11 and 12+. They also have their own kids flower power party on Sat-

Active types can go for a range of nautical activities including parasailing, kayaking, wakeboarding etc—the brochure seems to indicate they are all 10€ but that may be misleading—it could just be the sunset boat trip that is 10€. On Saturday there is also a 5km urban fun run combining an obstacle course with participants encouraged to run in hippie themed fancy dress. Jezza’s Sport Report Jeremy Parmenter Well, Sports fans, no apologies for this but this week's report has to be all about Golf and Europe's biannual tussle with the US of A for the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles that I previewed last week saying it should be a classic. And that's exactly how it turned out, with 3 days of brilliant, pulsating golf, with the US starting well on both Friday and Saturday morning but then being blown away in the afternoon sessions on both days. Come Friday evening Europe had a 106 lead after the two sets of 4balls and 4somes and were almost there, only needing 4 wins from the 12 singles matches on Sunday to retain the Cup and a draw to win it outright. As it turned out, Europe won that final session 6.5-5.5 to come out with an

overall win of 16.5-11.5, basically in Ryder Cup terms, a difference of 5 points which represents a bit of a hammering! So, congrats to Captain Paul McGinley and his team for a thoroughly professional team performance with all, bar one, of his team contributing magnificently. Just a shame the one happened to be a Scot, Gallacher, who remained scoreless playing in his home country and in front of his own fans. As it turned out, t'was a Welshman, rookie Jamie Donaldson, who lives in England, who played the overall winning shot with a beautiful wedge on the 15th to condemn the Yanks to a 7th loss in 8 matches, and their 3rd consecutive loss. Special mentions must go to him for his 3 wins from 4 to Graeme McDowell for his 3 wins from 3, especially as he was 4 down in

his Sunday singles, but came back to win 2 and 1 to my Player of the Tournament Justin Rose, as he won 3 and drew 2 to leader of the pack Rory McIlroy for his 2 wins and 2 draws from 5 to Sergio Garcia, 2 wins and a draw and finally, to rookie Victor Dubuisson, 2 wins and a draw in his first Ryder Cup. So, on to 2016 and Europe going for their 9th win out of 10, to really prove that Europe's pro golfers are far and away better than their American counterparts. Nuff said! On to Tennis and at last, a tournament win for Andy Murray, his first since Wimbledon last year, as he beat Spaniard Tommy Robredo 2-1 at the Shenzen Open in China. Mind you, it wasn't that easy, as on the brink of defeat, he saved 5 match points in the second set,
