The Essex Effect Ibiza destination searches soar following TOWIE spin off. Hotels.com reports 111% Ibiza increase. Trivago reports 47% San Antonio increase. Following the first showing of reality show The Only Way Is Essex’s Ibiza spin off, travel booking portals have recorded a huge increase in interest for holidays to Ibiza. Filming of the show where the programme swaps Essex locations for the sun and sand of Ibiza, was undertaken in September using some of Ibiza’s most famous locations and trendiest venues including Es Vedra, D'alt Vila, Ocean Beach, Cala Bassa Beach Club, Harbour Club and Plastik (see photo over). Within hours of the programme being shown on 8th October, searches for holidays in Ibiza soared including those for late season breaks this year. Hotels.com reported that searches for Ibiza holidays had
risen 111% after the episode went to air. Speaking for the popular holiday web portal Liz Peppard said "The Only Way Is Essex is clearly a force to be reckoned with when it comes to providing inspiration for our next holiday! The exploits of this popular bunch clearly make us want to look for our own sunny getaways as shown by these figures even after the closing parties have ended." A similar result was experienced when the show filmed in Marbella, Hotels.com said searches for the Spanish holi(Continued on page 2)

day hotspot increased by 72 percent overnight. The hotel comparison website Trivago reported searches based on Hotel stay in San Antonio until the end of November this year. Drawing on a huge traffic volume of over 80 million users per month, they said that searches for San Antonio increased by 47% following this week's episode of the programme. Trivago also reported that interest to Ibiza as a whole increased by 19 per cent over the same period. Denise Bartlett at Trivago said: "It is not uncommon for television programmes to spark an increase in travel interest, as the showcased destination is portrayed in a favourable light. Reality TV shows such as The Only Way is Essex typically fo-
cus on the best beaches, clubs, bars and restaurants, encouraging viewers to take this one step further and start searching for hotels online." The Only Way is Essex has something of a love it or loathe it reputation, but though some were quick to dismiss the benefit of such publicity others were keen to highlight the positive factors of the ITV spin off. San Antonio businessman Martin Makepeace, who was involved in the show’s production, was keen to point out the differential between TOWIE and some of the programmes that have depicted Ibiza in a less favourable light. “Towie is in aspirational programme as reflected by their locations, whereas Ibiza Uncovered was tabloid filth. The two are not comparable”. Lucy Dyer who works as a wed-
Losing The Palm Tree Battle. Since January of this year 700 Palm trees have been cut down because they have been infected by the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus). This is nearly twice as many as in the same period of time last year. The red palm weevil is thriving on the island due to our climate and environment but is devastating the Palm trees. Experts now believe that they can only contain this bug from spreading but that they will not be able to eradicate it as it is firmly established on the island. Cutting down infected trees and planting new
healthy ones is the best solution as out of every 200 red palm weevil infected palm trees they try to treat and save, only 20 survive often because the scars left on the tree by the treatment to kill the weevil are then infected by deadly fungi. So far this year, the experts have trapped 3,238 of these bugs. Their growth in numbers is exponential with the experts predicting to capture by the end of the year lots more red palm weevils than the 4,502 caught in 2013 which was already twenty times more than the number caught in 2010.

ding and events planner in Ibiza posted her thoughts on Facebook. “I’m seeing that a large majority of my clients are couples that met here in Ibiza 5-10 years ago and fell in love with the island. If we don’t do something to encourage the young people of today to come here now then in 5 years time this demographic will be going to other resorts like Croatia, where they met "5 years ago " and we will be left with a vip culture that will soon become bored and move on to the next big fashionable thing. Like them or loathe them this crowd are our bread and butter and programmes like Towie which are aspirational to many people with a disposable income are what we need to maintain the status quo that we all live off.” Club Emergencies Down. Over the last few days, during which the majority of the clubs closed in Ibiza, the hospital attended to 763 emergency cases. Of these only 19 were for drug related problems. The overall figure for emergencies during this typically busy time was less than previous years but more were drug related than in 2013. Police activity over the same club closing dates resulted in the detention of four Italians, three Spanish, one Senegalese and a British man for drug trafficking offences on what was described as a small scale. 46 grams of Cocaine, 31 grams of Ketamin, 16 grams of Speed, 578 grams of Marijuana, 5 grams of Hash and 173 Ecstacy pills were confiscated along with 2,131€ in cash, drug weighing/packaging equipment and several mobile phones. Super September For Hotels The hoteliers in Ibiza reported a record breaking September for hotel bed occupation. The first 15 days of the month recorded 91,4%occupation which was 2% up on 2013. Rather than the season petering out as has happened often in the past, the last 15 days of September were 5% up on 2013 recording an occupation level of 85%. The average hotel bed occupation for the five months from May is 84,1% whilst in Formentera the figure is 80,4%, both up on 2013.
Blushing Bride Dwarf stripper gets bride pregnant on hen night A woman has had to confess to having cheated on her husband-to-be on her hen night. The soon to be extra blushing bride took full advantage of the stripper that had been booked for her festivities range of services. She then fell pregnant and gave birth to a baby with dwarfism. Her husband believed that they had conceived the baby during the honeymoon but after he pestered doctors many times as to how the baby could have been born with dwarfism, the woman had no option but to confess she had been unfaithful. The unnamed woman, according to local reports, felt com-
Cemeteries Given Face Lift For All Saints Day. November 1st marks All Saints Day, the special day of the year when locals pay their respects to family members who have departed. Sant Josep council has spent 24,000€ on giving the cemeteries in the borough a face lift. The four cemeteries have been tidied up, generally maintained and repainted. Undercover Chefs. The association representing the 8 legal outside catering firms on the island have employed a pri-
pelled to tell her husband after friends who had accompanied her on the hen night at the beginning of the year started asking questions. It was said on LasCincoDelDia, the Spanish website that first published the story, that neither her closest female friends or her family knew what had happened on the hen night, but once she gave birth to her son she broke down and confessed to having slept with the dwarf stripper. In Spain it is not that unusual to hire dwarfs as entertainers at hen and stag parties and several websites offer the services of "miniboys" as they are known in Spain.
vate detective who has collected evidence of 35 other outside caterers operating illegally. Video evidence shows the unregistered outside caterers buying their products and the villas where they have provided services. Hoping not to have to officially report anyone, the association wants the rogue caterers to register and legalise their situation. So far two have done so and also joined the association. The association also said that their sector had had a good year and had worked well from April through to this month. Their aim is that

Migration Situation Street Lights Affecting Bird Migration. At this time of year the young of the Cory Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) birds leave their nests in the rocky crevices found on the small islands around our coast. In the middle of the night they start their migratory flight south via the straights of Gibraltar heading to the South Atlantic. However the flight of these birds is being disorientated by the bright night time street lighting on the island especially in the tourist zones such as Playa d’en within 3 years they will have Ibiza’s outside catering industry properly regulated with no rogue caterers continuing to trade in this lucrative sector of the tourist industry. Shout Out Loud. Shout Out Loud is the slogan of an educational program being given to the 1st to 4th year juniors in schools in the Sant Josep area of the island to make them aware of the sexual abuse that can happen to children. The idea is to increase awareness in boys and girls their self respect and self esteem and in doing so enable them to avoid becoming victims of sexual abuse or harassment. Businessman Mugged. Carrying 28,000€ in a bag, a local businessman had the weekend takings of various establishments he owns stolen last Monday. Reportedly, a corpulent man snatched and made off with the money bag the businessman was carrying as he walked along the Santa Eulalia Avenue in Ibiza Town. Quick thinking by the
Bossa, Sant Antoni and Es Canar which are located in front of the birds quiet and peaceful island nesting zones. The inexperienced young birds, on their first ever flight, end up flying round and round in circles in these brightly lit urban areas eventually crashing to the ground exhausted. Some are rescued but others perish. It appears that a similar thing happens to the Balearic Shearwater Virot bird which at this time of the year is migrating in the other direction to spend winter on the island.
victim alerted the police who mounted a search for the thief and spotted him entering into an apartment block. Finally, the Police detained the thief as he climbed the stair case of the building and, after what was described as considerable resistance by the well built mugger, they arrested the thief and returned all the 28,000€ to the relieved businessman. Mental Health. There are 4,500 people on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera diagnosed as suffering from some form or degree of mental ill health. Of these registered cases, 576 are classed ‘grave’ which means they are suffering from such things as schizophrenia or other severe mental disorders. It seems that, between the care provided by the national health services and the social services department of the Consell Island Government, these sufferers are receiving a good level of treatment for their conditions which includes workshops and educational programs plus special care for people with Alzheimer’s.

Sant Joan Roadworks. Costing 11 million€ and taking 16 months, the work on improving and widening the Sant Joan to Ibiza road started this week. Each lane will be 3,5 metres wide with 1,5 metre verges either side. New junctions will be built at the turn offs to Sant Carles and Sant Llorenç. Four new roundabouts will be built at the Trull d'en Vic, the Pas d'en Mateu, the Cas Coroner and the Portinatx junctions. Telephone cables will be passed underground, 28 new bus stops with shelters will be constructed and 750 metres of cycle lane will be built from Sant Joan village up to the first new roundabout. The politicians inaugurating the work asked for patience from residents and road users. Boat Fire. A boat stored on a property near Privilege disco was destroyed by fire this week. Worried residents called the fire service when they saw smoke coming from the outbuildings where the boat was stored. Luckily nobody and no other property was damaged by the fire which the emergency services soon controlled and put out. The cause is not known. Climbing Accident. A 31 year old man was injured after he lost control whilst recreationally climbing a wall located in the highest part of the Siesta Urbanisation in the Santa Eulalia area of the island. Other climbers rescued the man and brought him to safety where he was treated for the minor injuries he had received in the fall. It appears that the climber fell when he missed a foot hold and that his safety rope stopped him hitting the ground at the bottom of the climb. However, he was left dangling in mid air and banging against the wall until fellow climbers reached him and released him.

Ibiza News Aerial Spraying In Ibiza Several residents in the north of Ibiza have shown their concern, some of them even their outrage, due to the start of the campaign of aerial spraying of the pine processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa). Helicopters have launched doses of the plant protection product. Introducing the campaign on October 7th the Balearic conselleria Environment said that they would spread three litres per hectare and that the product “has the lowest class of affection to humans and wildlife.” They claimed it was “even compatible with bees”. Also in opposition of this system of spraying from the air are the GEN environmentalists and the Beekeepers Association of Ibiza. The Government plans spraying 1,088 acres in Ibiza, 661 of them in the Santa Eulalia area, 426 in Sant Joan and 303 in Formentera near Cap de Barbaria. Callers to Diario de Ibiza reported seeing several aircraft and helicopters and spraying began at about noon and continued throughout the afternoon. One neighbour complained that the spraying was taking place very close to the ground, above houses and orchards. Another neighbour from the north of the island is worried about her health and says she feels irritation in her mouth and throat. Various farmers whose produce is 100 percent ecological are worried about what this system of fumigation will do their crops. An online petition has already reached 1,500 signatures. New Guardia Civil Offices. Manned by Guardia Civil officers presently serving in San Antonio and Ibiza Town, it was announced this week that the Guardia Civil will open two new offices. One will be at the airport and one in the village of Sant Josep. Another new office will also be opened in Formentera.
Idiot Fails to Rob Bank The Guardia Civil have arrested a 49-year-old man who tried to rob a bank Tuesday morning in Sant Antoni de Portmany with a fake gun. The incident occurred at 9.20am when a man entered the BBVA bank, on Calle Bartolomé Vicente Ramón brandishing a gun. Customers and bank staff who were at the bank realized that the gun was clearly a fake and alerted the Guardia Civil. A Guardia Civil patrol moved to the site and arrested the offender. More Tourist Guides Needed. The cruise liner tourist market has put the spotlight on the problem of the lack of official tourist guides in Ibiza. Sources say that, especially when two or three cruise liners are in port at the same time, there are not enough guides to handle the excursions offered as part of the cruise. Some have been cancelled and others have taken place without an official guide which apparently contravenes tourist regulations. The problem stems from the fact that over the years officially registered guides on the island have aged and retired but the Tourist authorities have not employed new ones to replace them. At the moment there are only fifteen guides still working and the travel agents handling the cruise liner market are urging the authorities to employ between ten and fifteen more ready for next season. No Confidence In The Future. Official statistics show that 40% of the population of the Baleares have economic problems to survive each month until the next pay day. 93% have no possibility to save money for the future. This contradicts the official Government line that the economy is improving. 67% of all Ibiza residents think that the economic situation is bad and over 40% think it will not improve in 2015.

La Fromagerie, Santa Gertrudis Elaine Collins Located on the road just behind the Es Cucons shop in Santa Gertrudis, La Fromagerie is a bastion of French flavours and smells. Yes, smells! It is after all a superb French cheese shop offering a wide variety of cow’s, goat’s and sheep’s cheeses to suit all tastes. Along with a selection of French cooked ham and cured meats, La Fromagerie is also renowned for its selection of very good French wine at very good prices, plus many other French products. Not only is La Fromagerie the place to buy French produce, you can also stop by for coffee,
croissants and pastries, or enjoy a selection plate of cheeses and meats accompanied by a glass (or three) of French wine or cider. Another a great afternoon or evening out is to try the raclette or fondue which Celine, the charming owner of La Fromagerie, is happy to organise for a minimum of two people. Having lived in Switzerland on the French boarder, I was excited to try this traditional dish again. Raclette cheese is heated under a special machine, on metal spoons which is then scraped onto your plate (the term raclette derives from the French word racler, mean-
ing “to scrape”). This is accompanied by small boiled potatoes, gherkins, pickle onions, ham and salamis, and crusty French bread. Celine recommended that we try the following four cheese types to melt: Morbier, Chilli, traditional, and a pepper and mustard infused cheese. It was all so delicious and warming, especially as the chill nights are drawing in. Towards the end of the evening, as the wine flowed, we all got up and danced when Celine turned up the music and joined in the fun. I will certainly be back for a return visit to try the fondue or another raclette night with a
few friends. This was great fun and delicious, definitely worth a visit if you plan to come to Santa Gertrudis. Please call Celine in advance to reserve
for raclette or fondue. See Advert for details.. WiFi available.

By Elaine. For Readings Call 619 813 172 ARIES – The World (Reversed) Maybe it’s Mercury retrograde but you’re feeling out of sorts; it’s a good week to take a break and do very little. You’re usually revved up and always on the go so this will make a welcome change. Miss/Mrs Aries: organise it so that others to do your bidding. Mr Aries: comfy chair and the TV remote will do it! TAURUS – Eight of Cups You need to sort out your feelings and this is an excellent week to take some ‘me’ time. Those closest to you may want to encroach; however it would be wise to insist on your space. If they’re pushy; you’d be right to question their motives. You’ve no energy for needy people while you’re examining the value of your relationships. GEMINI – The Tower Just when you thought everything was going so well you find that others are not sticking to the agreed plan. Don’t lose the plot, as you can now to see situations as they really are not how you’d like them to be. It’s worth noting that this card indicates that your ideas show a stroke of genius so crack on! CANCER – Ace of Wands (reversed) The best laid plans seem to be likely upset this week; however don’t see this as a failure. Maybe you had some unrealistic expectations of someone or a situation and it’s all down to your perception of events. Try not to be negative as it may not have been what you would have wanted in the long term anyway. LEO – Two of Wands Don’t sit on the fence this week Leo, time to get back into the swing of things. Life’s a party that’s waiting for you to join it! Your problems are solvable; don’t waste valuable head space creating difficulties where few exist. Your mind is your biggest obstacle this week; don’t give in to negativity when all is, in fact, OK! VIRGO – Eight of Swords You feel a little ‘off’ and are likely to be overwhelmed by deadlines or the demands of others; you feel like running for the hills! Stop struggling with impulse to have a couple of duvet days. You need this to restore your equilibrium; others will just have to get on with it. Next week you’ll be back in the game. LIBRA - Temperance Keep a clear head regarding business matters. It's good to have a dream, but you are still in the planning stage and more patience is required before you roll out the next phase of a venture. Be assured you are on the right track; and if you believe in angels, there are a few around in human form this week. SCORPIO – Princess of Disks You’ve lots of creative ideas but how do you manifest them out into the world? It's this dilemma that blocks you from making the right choices when it comes to your career options. Your focus this week is to narrow it down to where your passions lie. If it doesn’t excite, let the idea go; concentrate on your singular talents. SAGITTARIUS - Seven of Disks You’ve plenty of good idea’s but be careful of scattering your thoughts otherwise nothing will be accomplished as planned this week. Having worked hard to put certain plans in to action; it would be a shame to take your eye off the ball so to speak, and to allow yourself to become distracted. Success comes from remaining focused and persistent. CAPRICORN – Strength Capricorns are renowned for their determination; mentally and physically and others will be in no doubt that you’ve a back bone, not a wish bone when it comes to getting your way. Stand up for what you believe in if challenged and don’t be intimidated by anyone who insists on having things their way. Give them your best scary growl! AQUARIUS – Nine of Wands If you feel stuck in a rut and certain areas of life remind you of a stagnant pond, then you must try to sort this out. Others have drawn on your energy so it’s time to get some maintenance work done on yourself! Take time out for a massage, healing or wellness programme that helps you get back on track. PISCES - Knight of Cups Faint heart never won fair lady, (or guy for that matter!) If you've had your eye on someone, why not make a bold move; you'll be pleasantly surprised at the response. This may, or may not be the love of your life, but what's wrong with having some fun? This Prince is the good news bear too, so expect some.
Sant Rafel Fiestas Nicole Torres The fiestas in Sant Rafel have started and there are activities for everyone for the rest of the month. Even though the programme calendar started at the end of September, the fiestas really start on Friday, when they have a speech and later a supper at Bar Cruce, followed by live music at 11.30pm. Active people can enjoy the Nordic walking on Saturday or the cycling tour on Sunday morning. For beer lovers there is an Octoberfest starting Saturday at 9pm with live rock music. Sunday afternoon is dedicated to our elders, which will conclude with the 30th Folkloric Festival. During the weekdays there are various cards championships and, on Wednesday 22nd, kids get treated to hot chocolate and a show at 11am. The patron saint’s day is Friday, October 24th, and is the central day of the fiestas. There is a mass at noon and ball pagés at 1pm. Evening festivities will be taken over by “La Movida”, with live music from the 70s/ 80s. Saturday evening, from 7pm, will see a coques (typical Ibizan vegetable square pizza) competition, a gymnastics display and the third Sant Rafel Artistic,
where our youngest can show off their talents and capacities. Sunday at noon there is a trot competition at the hippodrome, a football game at 5pm and, to end the fiestas, at 8pm there will be a chat about beekeeping. For the whole programme http://bit.ly/11kb9Rf
Heinz Vontin's Ibiza Claire B The exhibition of photographs by German photographer Heinz Vontin at the Puget Museum in Dalt Vila ends on October 31st. If you haven’t been to see it, it’s well worth the visit, to catch some glimpses of life in Ibiza taken in the summer of 1955. Forty black and white photographs are on show. Vontin wanted to capture life in the streets, and that is exactly what these photos convey, with people playing an important role. Scenes in Ibiza Town (Vara de Rey, Dalt Vila, La Marina and the port) sit alongside shots in San Antonio and the countryside around the island, showing people at work and at play. Shopkeepers, street traders, fishermen, girls cleaning wool, people relaxing on the terrace of Teatro Pereira and scenes outside the old Cinema Serra all feature. All the photos are accompanied by captions saying where the photo was taken and a brief description. These are only in Catalan, but it’s possible to get a basic understanding of the location and the subject, with the photos
telling the real story. The Museu Puget is housed in an old 15th century palace on Calle Major. The building is worthy of a visit in itself, as is the permanent collection of paintings of Ibiza scenes by Narcís Puget Viñas and his son also Narcís. . In October the museum is open Tuesday-Friday 10am to 4.30pm and Saturday-Sunday from 10am to 2pm. It’s always closed on Mondays and entrance is free. Dolphin Spotting Carly Sorensen Recently my husband, baby and I went out for a late afternoon boat trip to las margolides. After a gloomy and grey day, tarnished with showers of rain, it brightened up and we ventured out onto an almost deserted, calm and shimmering Mediterranean sea, hoping that the rain would stay away. As we went through the archway at Las Margolides, my husband commented that it 'was perfect dolphin weather' and suggested I 'summon' them. Jokingly, I did my best Flipper impersonation whilst staring to sea. Well, would you believe (pure coincidence, I'm pretty sure I am devoid of Dolittle powers) that a whole pod of dolphins soon appeared around our boat?! Bigger ones cruised along, their arched dorsal fins slicing the water and

Green Roof Ibiza Airport air audibly leaving their blowholes, whilst the younger ones playfully leapt out of the water and splashed around. They stayed with us for at least twenty minutes until we turned back to port in order to get in before dark. It was a truly magical experience. When we first arrived here by boat from Dartmouth via France and the Spanish med in 2011, we were escorted in by a pair of Dolphins. We have seen them many times since around this beautiful island, and are always blown away by the experience. There's nothing quite like encountering wildlife in its natural habitat, it instils you with such wonder and awe. We were rewarded further by a stunning sunset. It just goes to show that a little optimism can go a long way.
Mary Poppins @ Can Ventosa Nick Gibbs Mary Poppins the musical is being staged at Can Ventosa this weekend, Saturday October 18th and Sunday 19th, with 2 shows both days at 6 and 8pm. The production is based on the Disney film, not the stage show and so will have all of your favourite songs—step in time, feed the birds, spoonful of sugar etc all sung in Spanish—so be interesting to see how they handle supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. We have attended Spanish versions of Grease and Sister Act by the same company—and you do not need to understand Spanish to enjoy the shows—you already know the plot after all. More buildings are being built with green roofs designed to allow plants to be grown in thin layer of soil laid on top of a plastic membrane. The aesthetic benefits are obvious in the roof blending in with the countryside and also creating lush green vegetation in urban areas. There are of course other attractions to a green roof in that they will allow bird and insect
life to flourish in their natural habitat. Rainwater will not run of green roofs as easily and this allows better water management as it will improve the ability to collect water and slow down runoff into drains. Very beneficial in areas prone to flash floods. This type of roof is also an excellent type of insulation for noise and temperature. The soil and root systems will trap air that will muffle noise. This will also help keep the temperature cooler in summer and prevent heat loss through the roof in the winter. Green roofs will also improve air quality in urban areas as well as cooling towns and cities. There is also the added attraction that they will reduce the risk of fires spreading between houses, which is useful to know in places that are susceptible to forest fires. Before thinking of planting a

green roof one should check on local planning regulations before starting. The weight of this type of roof will be higher than a normal one so an architect or engineer should be consulted, and plans drawn up by a certified professional who can sign the drawings off to satisfy the local planning department. One of the most important things to consider when building a green roof or any type of roof garden is wind as this is the most likely cause of damage. It is a good idea to build fences out of mesh or slatted pieces of wood that will help to dissipate wind before it hits the garden. Green roofs can be either a dense cover of plants or also a garden built with raised flower beds and tubs. More advice on green roofs and the type of plants that can be grown will follow soon.

Ibiza Music Video Festival Claire B The 2nd Ibiza Music Video Festival was held last week from October 10th-11th at the Grand Palladium Palace Hotel in Playa D’en Bossa. Extending the event over two days this year gave more time for educational talks and workshops and opportunities for participants to meet each other, network and socialise. Starting after lunch on Friday, there were talks from industry professionals focusing on each aspect of video pre-production, production and post-production. The chaired panel sessions were insightful into the current state of the industry, which is changing with the fortunes of the music industry and the way that people predominantly watch music videos now, which has seen a shift from TV to YouTube. The experts on the panels provided input from their individual areas of expertise, followed by questions and answers to give participants a chance to follow-up topics of interest. Videos were screened throughout giving us examples of the state of the art and what some of the experts have been producing. The evening’s social activities allowed participants to go and see the Brand New Heavies at Ibiza Rocks and the after party at Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes and I spotted many of them partying into the small hours. The program for Day 2 included a series of interactive workshops, focusing on all elements of making music videos from makeup to marketing. The main event in the evening was the award ceremony for the music video competition at Yemanja on Cala Jondal. The competition received over 450 entries across the ten categories and was judged by a panel of industry experts. And the winners were: Best Music Video - Tim Main’s video of Duke Dumont “Won’t look back” Best Director - Jonas Lord’s video of Maya Jane Coles “Comfort” Best Director of Photography - Charlie Herranz’s video of Francesco Rossi feat. Ozark ”Godspeed you” Best Editor - Jason Bock’s video of Arcadia “The kite string tangle” Best VFX - Angelique Bosio in the video for DyE “She’s bad” Best SFX - AB/CD/CD in the video for The Postal Service “A tattered line of string” Best Colourist - Marta Dymek in the video for The Salt “There’s talk” Best Production Design - David Freymond in the video for Hippocampe Fou “Le marchand de sable” Best Costume - Marine Dorfmann in the video for Joakim feat. Luke Jenner “Bring your love” Best Makeup - Mariska Virginia van Kasbergen in the video for Tricky ”Hey love” The event was more of a conference than a festival and whilst I was only able to attend the sessions on the first day, I found it a thoroughly enjoyable and well organised event. The organisers are already thinking ahead to next year’s festival, which is becoming a regular event in the creative calendar on the island. www.ibizamusicvideofestival.com

Interview: Nick Gibbs The Brand New Heavies were quite a feather in the cap for the first October festival and there was quite a buzz about their appearance, though I couldn’t profess to know them well myself. Actually nor could many other people I talked to. Everybody knew them as a major name, but few could name any of their songs. My enthusiasm for the night was boosted with the excited call of my oldest Ibiza friend Carlos, a man with impeccable taste in music though less so in swimwear (he carries a photo of himself in a Ku ‘Mr Tanga’ competition). If they were good enough for Carlos they would do me. Prior to the interview I diligently turned the office playlist to the band and spent the next couple of hours saying things along the lines of “so this is one of theirs”. One of those bands. If you don’t think you know them, you would if you heard their greatest hits. A 10 minute interview was allotted, normal in this type of post soundcheck, pre-dressing room, press call. I don’t blame them, it must be pretty dull going through the same questions over and over. I tend to select the last slot—at least you can offer them the good news it’s nearly over. So expecting a relatively routine interview I was surprised on arrival that guitarist Simon was exuberantly telling the penultimate interviewer, a bemused, confused and slightly scared looking young Spanish girl that he wanted Bacon and Eggs right now so he could throw up all over the place. Simon repeated his desire several times asking her advice on the avail-
Page 8
ability of an English fry up and was clearly keen to ensure she knew what bodily functions he intended to display as soon as he had consumed it. Either he was very bored by proceedings, a bit of a tease, or proper old school rock n roll. I hoped for the latter. It turned out that Bass Player Andrew had lost his phone and was in a bit of a panic about it, which seemed far less rock n roll, and so with only 3 heavies left I was co-opted in as the fourth for the required photo shoot. This no doubt confused the preceding interviewer even more when she got back to her desk and compared her photo to others of the band and found a white bald man sitting where a black bald man should be. My money was now firmly on Simon being a bit of a prankster and so it turned out to be. A very happy chap always looking for the next way to take life a little less seriously. The heavies new vocalist looked positively ill, I wondered for a moment if this was another of his pranks, substituting the Amazonesque Diva I’d been watching in videos with somebody he’d found doing voluntary work in a West African health centre. Lastly we had drummer Jan, who formed the band with Simon and Andrew 28 years ago—all original members still going strong—and you immediately had the impression they had him to thank for that. The one who held it all together, which is quite apt because that’s exactly what drummers do. NG: I was listening to your Hip Hop vocalists album this afternoon. Brilliant. Any plans for similar projects in the future?
The heavies made an album where each track featured a different Hip Hop/Rap vocalist. Jan: Maybe. The only thing is it’s so hard to put together. A logistical nightmare. So many artists, so many management companies and release schedules. Right now it’s more important to concentrate on getting our vocal work going again with Dawn. Also Hip Hop has changed so much. More commercial and perhaps less interesting. Simon: It’s a musical love kind of project. You do it because you love it. Obviously you can’t tour with it. We are talking to a guy in Croatia who has some really interesting connections for something similar. We’d like to get Dawn involved, perhaps adding some chorus., it could be really good. Jan: That album was of a moment too. We had Far Side, Black Sheep, people like that who hadn’t really done much at that time. I don’t know if you should try and go back. Simon: Who would you want to see on it? NG: I was thinking a Grime project might work well. You might chill them out a bit.
That got the always desirable early laugh. Interviews always relax a bit after a laugh. NG: Dawn, you’ve joined a band with 28 years history behind them. Daunting? Dawn: Yeah I know, I guess I want to, er, try and inject some energy. Keep them young, ha ha. God I want to inject some energy in myself right now, way I feel. Clearly she is ill. NG: How did you get together? Dawn: A mutual friend got…

saying Acid Jazz meant I escaped the same.
Dawn: No we’re just in and out. We fly off to Korea and Japan for gigs tomorrow. Jan: We played with Carl Cos at Mambo a couple of years back—a one off for a documentary he was producing. NG: Thanks very much, looking forward to the show.
Jan: The new record was taking a long time to complete., N’Dea was moving away. Her heart didn’t seem in it.
And great show it was, but for that I’ll hand you over to Claire.
NG: Your new album Sweet Freaks is due any time now right? Jan: 24th October, so yeah a few days away.
Review:
NG: Will we hear much of that tonight? Jan: 2 or 3 tracks Simon: We’re playing something from every album we’ve produced. We’re on for an hour and a half. NG: Good my friend Carlos will be pleased he’s going to get some of your classics, what direction is Sweet Freaks, would you still call it Acid Jazz? Jan: Not really, but what is Acid Jazz? NG: Just sounds such a cool genre. I like saying it, it sounds nice. Simon: It does.
Simon starts repeating Acid Jazz in a variety of inflections.
NG: Have any of you got much of an Ibiza connection? How long are you here for?
Simon had earlier teased the Spanish escritores that they were staying in Ibiza for 4 years, a duration I imagine he’d increased as every of the afternoons interviews had asked the same. His pre-occupation with the joys of
Claire B One of the highlights for me of the inaugural October Festival was the live performance of the Brand New Heavies at Ibiza Rocks. The acid jazz and funk pioneers have had an astonishing 16 top 40 singles since they were formed in London back in 1985 and lots of island residents were looking forward to seeing them play, myself included. Also on the line-up were Boss And Over from Madrid, who did a great job of entertaining and warming up the crowd with their Spanish brand of funk and soul mixed with bossanova as they arrived at the venue before the main event. The Brand New Heavies appeared onstage with new
vocalist Dawn Joseph and quickly got down to business for the appreciative crowd who danced throughout their set, which lasted well over an hour. Playing many of their hit singles, including ‘Dream On Dreamer’, my personal favourite ‘Spend Some Time’, ‘Never Stop’ and ‘Midnight At The Oasis’, mixed in with a few new songs from their forthcoming album which is being released later this month. The atmosphere in the venue was great, made up predominantly of island residents of a certain age who remembered the band when they were churning out their hits in the 90’s, and who were happy to turn back the years and dance the night away under the stars. The band put on a great performance and it was fantastic to have just one more night at Ibiza Rocks before it is mothballed for the winter until next year.
Michael Winch Memorial Cup
Nick Gibbs Always a great day starting with the football tournament itself which this year has a change of venue to Ses Paisees, just outside San Antonio on the main road to Ibiza. For those that know the area it is past the Guardia Civil station, behind the church on the left. For those that don’t just follow the red and white balloons from the dual carriageway. The tournament itself starts at 10.30a.m.. There are 8 teams competing and the more supporters cheering them on, the better the quality of football will be. Probably. Well probably not but you should still get along to lend your support anyway, it’s all in a very good cause, actually this year it’s two—Age Concern and Contra el Cancer are the nominated charities.. If the prospect of watching some of Ibiza’s most eligible young men running around in shorts does not tickle your fancy there is plenty more to keep you amused. As well as the bar, terrace and kids play park, Tania’s cake stall will be offering all manner of tempting goodies to ruin your appetite—which is a oster p Im & s shame as after the football the event moves along to everyew Heavie 3 Brand N body’s favourite Tapas restaurant from 5pm for their last night of the season. The kitchen will be open from 5-10pm, the bar from 5pm to late, which we wouldn’t be surprised may turn out to be very late indeed. The party at Tapas includes a live show from Alex and Nell, their first since returning to Ibiza, Tombola, Raffle, and much more besides. Local businesses have been very generous in donating raffle prizes including:A Bed at Ocean Beach inc 2 bottles of champagne and bottle of vodka… Body painting at Kiss My Fairy… 200€ drinks credit at Linekers… Meals at Mint Lounge, Casitas, Olive Tree… New hoover and microwave.. Personal training with Adam Hart.. 100€ from Ibiza Property shop… and more are arriving every day. Tickets for the raffle are already on sale at Thomas Greens in San An and Father Jacks in Figueretes, and of course at the tournament and later at Tapas on the day. The Far East Two Old Rockers Contra Cancer Fair Update. Following on from last week’s article regarding this year’s Contra Cancer Fair we can now advise you that if you have anything to donate that this can be dropped off at Thomas Green’s Shop in Cala de Bou or the Queen Vic in Sat Eulalia, open from 3pm Mon – Fri and 12-30pm Sat and Sun’s (why not try one of their superbly kept beers while you’re there). If you have any larger items then please call Lyn on 677630514 who will arrange collection. A couple of editions ago we told you about a book signing by Jim Bailey of his latest release “Follow your dream”, an account of his solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a boat called “Determination”. We went along to Bar Mariposa to meet him and buy a copy, as did quite a number of others, and were quite surprised to be able to see the actual charts he used on his crossing. We now look forward to enjoying his latest book as much as we did his first. Last Saturday’s Viva Cala Llonga Caribbean Beach Party was another tremendous success. Ja Bless were on top form, Jessica and Francisco enthralled the crowd, perhaps it was the skimpy costume, and Filipe cooked and served paella for 115 people. A fitting end to the visit by the group of walkers from Ireland, who have once again left the island with some fond memories and positive impressions. The proceedings came to a slightly early close when it decided to rain, which of course stopped as soon as the band packed up. So congratulations to all involved and we look forward to the programme for 2015. Cinema. Showing at Teatro España in Santa Eularia. Friday 17th to Sunday 19th The Congress. Wednesday 22nd & Friday 24th to Sunday 26th 6.30pm: The Most Wanted Man.

View From The Pew Walter Robbins Well at long last the rain has come and the Island is being transformed with a green revolution on what was parched soil. There are wonderful green shoots of grass everywhere and the beauty of the Island is stunning. Spain beat Luxembourg 4 – 0 and how good after the disappointments of the World Cup, things are definitely looking up! In the English-Speaking Church we have been enjoying green shoots of God’s blessing on individual lives. We have had such joy together in our regular Services as if God’s spiritual rain has refreshed us. So being a follower of the Living Lord Jesus Christ is certainly not boring but brings a deep peace and joy, whatever the weather or the football results. “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace” (Isaiah 55:12) when the rain of God’s love refreshes the human soul.” Walter and Diana Robbins (971343383) Services: Sunday 19th October: 10.30am Harvest Service with Holy Communion at San Rafael. It’s Good to Talk Kate Stillman
Dear Kate I need to separate from my partner because I have fallen out of love with him, he takes too many drugs and drinks too much, and it has got to a point now where it has changed his character and he is not the same person I meet two years ago. But, he has recently cut down and says he is going to give up, I am worried if

and expectations for the future seem to slip away at the same time and it can be exhausting even thinking about starting over again. It seems as if you have made the decision to end and that is very clear for you which is a good thing. I understand that you feel responsible for your partner’s welfare but maybe its time to question why? Your partner is an adult yet it seems as if he is dependant on you or you have a feeling that he is dependant on you, part of his recovery is that he learns to be dependant on himself and though he may need support from others (there are NA and AA groups on the island I will post details at

It seems that you have come to the end of the line interns of the relationship and that is your choice, you will find a way to leave that feels right for you but it has to come from a place of looking after yourself as well as being considerate to him and his situation. You have made a difficult decision to end and it I important that once you start that process you follow it through for your own peace of mind but also to let him know that you mean what you say and this is the end.

Letter from Juan Saturday 26th the clocks go back and then suddenly it will be dark at 6pm and although in the morning it will be lighter with sun rise being an hour earlier at 7.15am, it will not feel quite the same. So make sure you enjoy the extra sunny hours during the next week. Talking of enjoying things, we went over to Cala Llonga to support the Irish walking group, who were on a visit, and also to support the last event

of “Viva Cala Llonga”. Last Saturday it was Reggae on the beach so as an old “ska” aficionado I couldn’t resist shaking a leg, although it was quite hard to get into the full swing in the very soft sand of the Cala Llonga beach. So what have we got to look forward to now that the Island is closing down in so many places for a winter rest? Peace and quiet you might suggest, a chance to be able to park in the streets, or maybe even the cooler weather. One thing you can do is go for long walks, get on your bike, play golf and enjoy the remarkable scenery of this Island with its fantastic display of wild flowers that appear every year. Have a great week, Juan.
I Kissed A Girl & I Liked It … We spotted this photo of our own Nicole Torres (right) on the Supermartxe website. Seems the club’s closing night was not the only thing Nicole was reviewing. On showing Nicole the photo and enquiring whether she did, as in the song, ‘like it’, she replied “Oh my God!”.

Sales approach. I spoke with Simon about his sales approach, the way he deals with customers, and closes the sale. He seemed confident that he had this under control and closed as many sales as anybody could. I talked through the process with him to get his answers and I also observed him with a number of clients. He had a welldeveloped sales patter however there is always room for improvement. I gave him some tips on how he could close more sales and he said he would give them a try. Later that day I got a message from a very happy Simon explaining that he had used one of my suggestions and it had got him a sale that otherwise he would have lost. Although I was shattering some of Simons self-beliefs I could see he was beginning to have more confidence in the suggestions and recommendations that I was making. He did start this process with an open mind, ready to go along with whatever I suggested, however I could see it was difficult for him. New product line. As Simon is selling products that are made and designed in Ibiza, and as there was a lot of activity around the store during the makeover, he attracted the inter-
Page 12
est of another company with products that are also created here to stock them in his store. What might surprise you is that it was a music company. Simon now stocks hand-painted and plain shirts and dresses as well as music from Ibiza and it is all produced here. Therefore visitors to his store can now get both the authentic look and sounds of Ibiza all in one store. This will increase the number of visitors to the store and the number of items that everybody leaves with!
The Launch. I agreed a date for the launch with Simon that was roughly two weeks after we had begun the transformation. This was a very tough deadline to meet however, as the season had already begun, time was money. Simon invited friends, acquaintances, business contacts, and had some music, drinks and food for his guests. He also involved his neighbours and a mini carnival atmosphere was in the street for the day. Sales were brisk and all of the feedback was very positive. Advertising/marketing. The budget didn’t allow for this so I worked with Simon and we did some (free) online marketing, which was very labour intensive. We also achieved some press coverage. Simon’s reaction to the online marketing was that it was not very effective, and in some ways he had a point, however it created a lot of awareness which resulted in greater footfall both on the launch day and the days and weeks afterwards. Simon had not been a very online person in the past however in 2014 it is an essential part of successful business in Ibiza. The difference. Speaking with Simon, as well as many of his friends and family, the most striking difference was in Simon himself. He had a new energy and belief in himself and in his business. He was excited again and the customers in the shop were sensing this. He explained to me that one month following the launch his sales were up 20% compared to the same period last year and they contin-
ued to grow after this. He then told me that he was opening another similar business in a showroom upstairs and asked would I like to come to the launch! Simon now has two growing businesses and a lot more energy. This is compared to the man I had met a few weeks earlier who was clutching at the last straw before deciding to pack in his business, his dream, and accept failure. The other difference is that he now has a store that is very visually appealing to passers by so much so that he told me every day at least one person stops and takes a picture of the front of the building. This is a great compliment to Simon and what he has achieved. Before the ‘makeover’ had begun the building was dull and dreary on the outside. Now it is bright and vibrant and is a real example of what shopping in Ibiza looks like. This isn’t the end of the story. Simon s has a lot of work to do. What we did achieve was to get things moving in the right direction and prove to Simon that his business has a lot of potential once the right changes are made. A few words from Simon. I asked Simon to give his view on how the whole experience went for him. “I knew I had to change but how and when with minimal funds available was the problem. I had just had all my new publicity and guide adverts printed for the season (with the old name) when I met John and I was busy painting clothes and preparing for the season. There is always an excuse not to change, however I decided that what John was saying made sense, and common sense is not so common. The business has grown in a difficult trading year for Ibiza town. The numbers coming to the island are irrefutably on the increase but visitors to Ibiza Town are way down combined with the proliferation of clothing boutiques in every hotel and beach club. Commercial competition is fierce however with John’s advice I have managed to change, compete, and still retain my quirky style and produce unique garments made, and hand painted in Ibiza.”

Ibiza Town & Santa Eularia Most Expensive In Baleares. Ibiza Town and Santa Eularia are the most expensive towns (centres of population over 25,000) to buy property in the Baleares. Whilst property prices have fallen in other urban areas of the islands, prices in the two biggest urban areas on Ibiza have increased. A property in Ibiza Town is valued at around 2,350€ per m2 and in Santa Eulalia at 2,311€ per m2. Conversely Palma city prices have dropped to 1,445€ per m2. Defying trends throughout most of Spain, as the year progresses the property prices in these two Ibizan urban areas are increasing by 2,5% in Ibiza Town and 0,5% in Santa Eulalia. The only other urban centre in the Baleares which reaches the 2000€ per m2 price level is Calvià in Mallorca.
Ibiza August Sales Increase. August saw a 19% increase in the sales of properties through-
out the Baleares when compared to the same month last year. In total 657 transactions took place on the islands whilst the average for all of Spain showed a 1,1% drop with the total being 23,525 properties of various types changing hands. Despite the August drop across Spain, figures for the 3rd quarter are up, but the year down, highlighting the fragility of the market. 3rd Quarter Up, Annual Down. Newly released statistics from the Government’s Department of Public Works have revealed that the number of property sales increased by 12.1% in the 3rd trimester. A total of 91,338 purchases were completed between July 1st and September 30th 2014, which equals the same

Renting on a budget? Try Milanuncios All of the big property portals (fotocasa, piso, idealista etc.) offer rental properties in Ibiza, but you will find the majority are through rental agents who typically charge a month’s rent as their fee, plus you’ll need a month deposit and the first month’s rent. They need to earn a living but if your budget can’t stretch to it try this website which has a far higher proportion of properties offered directly by Landlords so no extra fee involved. The website is not exactly cutting edge and takes some getting used to, but it is ok once you get your head round it. 22MB Satellite Internet Why struggle with a slow internet connection when Fusion Satellite can bring 22mbps broadband to your home or business? Fusion Satellite uses satellite technology not phone lines. That means that whether you live remotely or are just unlucky in that your connection is poor, Fusion Satellite can deliver fast, reliable and affordable broadband internet to your home or business. Pick the package and price to suit you and you could soon be enjoying download speeds of up to 22mbps. Traditional "wired" internet services connect you to the internet using copper phone lines, or if you are very lucky
fibre optic cables. This works well if you live near an exchange, but less so if you live more remotely or even if the cables between you and your exchange take a tortuous route. A small dish on your building allows the signal to be bounced from your computer, off a satellite and connect with the internet. Because our system doesn't rely on miles of cables to connect you to the internet we can deliver fast connections anywhere. If you can see the sky from the roof of your building then you can benefit from Fusion Satellite. NB: We Supply A Uk Ip Address With The Tooway System. Buying in Spain—Key Facts. Taxes and fees are much higher in Spain than the UK. The lending ratio Banks will fund by mortgage is generally lower than in the UK. You need to allow approximately 12% of the property value to cover taxes & fees. The maximum percentage most banks will lend is 80%. For example:A 200,000€ property would incur around 24,000€ in tax and fees. Banks would lend a maximum 160,000€ of the 200,000€ value. You would need to have the 40,000€ shortfall and the 24,000€ in taxes & fees, a total of 64,000€ to be likely to qualify for a mortgage— though of course there are many other criteria including your official earnings, which will affect your eligibility.

to? A lot of us diehard England cricket fans, who had a tiny bit of sympathy for him over his sacking from the national team, have really been alienated by his absolutely ridiculous allegations in his new book. Now I have always thought that he was a seriously talented cricketer and respected that but he's just blown any respect I had for him outta the ventana! What a d******d and fancy having a go at a dressing room that had just created English history by becoming the first ever England side to be World No 1 in all three disciplines, Test, ODI and T20. To make matters worse, he hasn't just had a go at skipper Cook, but has lambasted Prior, Swann, Anderson, Trott and Broad, basically the spine of a very successful side and to what end? Just to sell his book, which will no doubt become a bestseller, but at what a cost to himself. And as for his mouthpiece, Piers “oh dear, have I been sacked again?” Morgan, as publicists go, he's even worse than Max Clifford and Posh Spice put together! • Rugby League More controversy in Rugby League as St Helens won the Grand Final at OT against neighbours Wigan and what was Warriors forward Ben Flower thinking when, having thumped Saints' Hohaia to the ground, then thumped him again for good measure, prompting the first red card in Grand Final history. Now I can understand the first punch as it was in retaliation to Hohaia's forearm smash and he would have probably got away with a sinbinning, but to go and hit a man when he's down and dazed, well, that's just pure stupidity. To make matters worse, Wigan were leading at the time and basically, down to 12 men, couldn't handle the Saints attacks after the break, and eventually lost thanks to a brazen act of cowardice to hand St Helens the match. • Tennis All hail the King aka Roger Federer. What a performance in China as he won the ATP Shanghai Open, not only beating Gilles Simon in the Final, but also Djokovic, Our Andy's conqueror, in the Semi, to record his

Japan Grand Prix Rhian Gibbs This weekend welcomed the return of the Russian Grand Prix, though still shrouded with thoughts of Jules Bianchi. Mercedes are seemingly unstoppable and with Hamilton on pole with his teammate by his side, you knew this would be a battle between the two. Hamilton started well and Rosberg tried a bold move to overtake at turn two, but unfortunately for him he flat-spotted his tyres badly and was forced to pit on lap 1 for new tyres – this was to prove a remarkable race for him. With Rosberg out of the picture Hamilton was able to cruise to victory, however his teammate came from the back of the pack to take 2nd place – 52 laps on the same tyres and with both cars scoring the points, Mercedes deservedly took the Constructors Championship for 2014. Bottas of Williams was the only driver who came close to challenging the Silver Arrows and whilst he managed to stick with Hamilton for beginning of the race, tyre degradation meant he fell back – and unable to hold off Rosberg, he took 3rd place. McLaren looked strong and the changes to the cars worked well for them with Button coming 4th and Magnusson 5th. Ferrari lacked the straight line speed and whilst Alonso did hold off Ricciardo, he could only manage 6th and his teammate Raikkonen 9th. Red Bull also had a steady race though Vettel struggled with his car crossing the line 8th, Ricciardo looked the stronger of the two and hassled Alonso until the end taking 7th. Perez did a fantastic job of eking out his fuel after matching the pace of the front runners early on, with his team repeatedly describing the fuel situation as ‘desperate’, he did well to take the last point and 10th.
4th title of the year and climb over Rafa in to the World No 2 spot. And they thought it was all over for the Swiss meister, well, it ain't yet! • Football—Super League I really must not make predictions and mention certain teams. Having informed you last week
Williams’ Massa took 11th, initially he was working his way through the pack well, but got stuck behind the fuel-saving Force India of Perez. Hulkenberg’s 5-place grid drop for a gearbox change cost him and the Force India crossed the line 12th despite closing in on Massa and Perez. Toro Rosso suffered in Russia as whilst both cars handled well and had pace, fuel consumption problems meant they both had to back off, Vergne and Kvyat took 13th and 14th respectively. Sauber also had a pretty straightforward race with Gutierrez 15th and Sutil 16th, though Sutil did suffer a spin after being tapped by Grosjean. Lotus suffered with grip and lack of pace leaving them near the bottom of the pack, Grosjean (17th) had a five-second stop go penalty for the Sutil spin, and Maldonado (18th) had a five-place grid penalty carried over from last week. Ericsson of Caterham was the last man to cross the line and after changes to his car, he was able to challenge Maldonado for a long time; unfortunately to no avail, Ericsson took 19th. His teammate Kobayashi, retired lap 22 with overheating brakes and Max Chilton of Marussia also retired early (lap 10) due to a wheel bearing problem. Hamilton now leads Rosberg in the Driver’s championship by 17 points and with 3 races to go, it looks like a fight to the end between the Silver Arrows. Next stop Austin, Texas on the 2nd November 2014.
