Ibiza to Palma 37€ Return

Rubber bands not required; Air Europa’s 68 seat ATR 72 will fly the Ibiza & Menorca to Majorca routes.

Ibiza-Palma Return Under 40€ with resident discount. Daily schedule of six return flights. Fly transatlantic from Ibiza without baggage recheck.

Air Europa have commenced ticket sales for the interisland routes starting on May 1st. The schedule is for six daily flights to and from Mallorca using a 68 seat turboprop ATR 72, the first at 07.35 and the last at 21.00. In December, Juan Jose Hidalgo, president of Globalia group (the parent company of Air Europa), said of their entry to the inter-island market that "it aimed to offer an efficient, comfortable and flexible service, benefiting both business and leisure travellers". In a search conducted Tuesday 10th February, Ibiza to Palma on May 2 with return on the 6th May would cost 37€ with resident discount. The second company that

operates the same inter-island route, Air Nostrum, offers the same dates for a total of 55.72€, including resident discount. The schedule, announced this week, starts with the first morning departure from Mahon at 7:00am and Ibiza at 7:35am heading for Palma. The Ibiza to Majorca route then departs at 9:55, 12:15, 15:10, 17:30 and 19:50. The last flight of the day will be the return from Palma to Ibiza at 2100. Though officially open for bookings, it seems that the Air Europa website needs some technical issues resolved as (Continued on page 2)

when booking through their main site, Palma is only shown in some combinations when the website language is set to Spanish. Web portals such as Skyscanner display all flight times correctly, but some enquiries result in returns of ‘flight not known’ at a later stage in the booking process. To avoid frustration it may be advisable to use their telephone booking line in the short term. Air Europa’s national and international connections at Palma

airport, and the main company hub at the Adolfo Suárez MadridBarajas airport, will enable travellers from Mahon and Ibiza to continue onto transatlantic flights to both North and South America, and the Caribbean, without having to worry about their rechecking luggage under separate bookings. This will enable single-ticket bookings from Ibiza to Africa, the Americas and elsewhere in Europe. Tel 902 401 501 https://www.aireuropa.com

Sant Joan Road Solution? The Consell d'Eivissa Highways Department is close to finalising the amendments to the expansion and improvement of the road to Sant Joan, which are required following the discovery of a colony of Bats in a cave close to the Portinatx junction. The rare species of Bats are near puig de s'Ullastre, and their protected status has caused something of a problem. The solution needs to move the planned roundabout far enough away from the Batcave without the need to use more land than has already been obtained, otherwise the inevitable additional administrative requirements of land purchase and planning regulations would result in considerable delays, which the Consell d'Eivissa says it “wants to avoid at all costs”. Antoni Marí, mayor of Sant Joan and second vice president of the Consell d'Eivissa, appeared on Televisio d'Eivissa i Formentera (TEF) and said "I am very con-

London City Expansion Agreed

Plans to expand London City Airport in a £200million investment plan have been given the go-ahead. The expansion will enable the airport to increase from the current 70,000 flights p.a. up to 111,000. The plans include developing existing infrastructure to increase runway capacity, to allow more take-offs and landings at peak times and accommodate the next generation of quieter, more fuel efficient aircraft. These aircraft have longer ranges and will open up new markets not currently served from London City Airport. Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport said: “The development of the airport will culminate in 2023 when, having constructed seven new aircraft stands, a parallel taxiway and terminal extensions to the west and to the east, the airport will be welcoming some six million passengers every year.”

All well and good, but most of our readers will be interested in one question and one question only. Will it mean more frequent flights to Ibiza? No comment from B.A. as yet - but as the availability of slots has always been B.A.’s response to the London to Ibiza direct flight schedule, the 60% increase in availability can’t hurt our cause.

Storm Damage The Consell d'Eivissa has ordered four tons of gritting salt in anticipation of possible frost or snow in the Balearics. In a series of measures that seem as unlikely as Britain announcing it has stockpiled factor 50 sun cream, the authority have reinforced the highway department and the fire service have mobilised it’s entire force on standby ready for a call to duty if necessary. Last Wednesday’s yellow alert conditions included strong winds, a sudden drop in temperature, rain and hail. Coastal conditions were such that many

cerned. It is a very expensive project involving very complex plans to facilitate the numerous access points for the many houses that are near the road”. The mayor of San Joan said he is satisfied that the Consell are studying a new location for the roundabout. The works have a budget of 10.9 million€ and will take 16 months to complete. The route of 13.4km will include 4 illuminated roundabouts and 28 covered bus stops. Homeless Beds in Cold Spell. Ibiza Town Ayuntamiento’s special care facilities for homeless and vulnerable people were put into action at the weekend, following the ‘yellow alert’ low temperatures being experienced in the Pitiuses. Ibiza Town Hall are offering 20 beds in the city centre shelter. Should it be required they also have the budget available to put a classroom of Sa Bodega College into service. This open space would be equipped with mattresses, blankets and basic cooking facilities in which homeless people can seek overnight shelter away from the cold of the streets.

London City Facts:The airport serves 46 destinations across the UK, Europe and USA (New York). LCY’s travellers are 61% business, 39% leisure. Target departure times from entering the airport to boarding aircraft is 20 minutes, and target arrival time is 15 minutes from disembarking the aircraft to leaving the passenger terminal . In 2014 LCY had a record year handling 3.65 million passengers, up 8% on 2013

GEN “anchorages are chaotic" The GEN-GOB Eivissa environmental group yesterday described Ibiza’s situation of anchorage areas in summer as "chaotic". Their claims are based upon the findings of 'The Sea A Shared Responsibility', a study

Brits felt compelled to grab a striped deckchair, roll their trouser leg up and go for a dip. The storm caused numerous incidents including a crane falling over in Cala Vedella. Sant Josep had several fallen trees and a landslides covered parts of the Can Guerxo sports grounds. Elsewhere electrical wires came down on the Santa Eulalia to Sant Carles road and in Sant Antoni a billboard fell at Lidl supermarket. Formentera also suffered with strong winds collapsing a glass wall at the Maritime Station and lifting the roof of a restaurant.

The GEN concludes that "there is an erosive impact on Posidonia Oceanica (sea grass) meadows due to anchoring of so many boats" and demanded urgent action without which the damage will be irreversible. Going underground - Subterranean Parking for 320 cars and 110 motorcycles in Ibiza The Planning department in Ibiza has given the green light to plans to build an underground car park next to the medieval walls of Dalt Vila, in the space now occupied by the Reina Sofía park. As reported by the Consistorio Friday, the bill provides for the construction of four underground floors that would accommodate about 320 cars and also have room to house about 110 bikes. The construction will total some 14,000 square meters, which would be covered on the outside by gardens of 12,481 square meters, to replace the current Reina Sofia Park. The budget for the work amounts to 6.9 million euros, with the work being put out to tender by a special committee. However, before taking the project further and proceeding to tender, the City must submit the plans to the Insular Planning Commission and the ‘Patrimonio Histórico Artístico’ for their comments and agreement. Pepita Says “We are listening” Close Call for Sankeys Boss David Vincent, the British owner of Playa D’en Bossa club Sankeys, was said to be only “hours from death” following a case of severe appendicitis last week. Ibiza blogger Danny Kaye (dannykayibiza.blogspot.co.uk) reported that Vincent “had a near death experience last week, after he collapsed in hospital in Ibiza”. Doctors at the private Rosario clinic, are said to have undertaken an emergency operation on the 43 year old owner of what has become one of Ibiza’s British business success stories as one of the most popular venues among club

Sansano said that none of the previous plans had gained approval as they included structures on the surface of up to 6 meters high, which had an unacceptably negative visual impact. The scheme was passed for approval by Ibiza Town’s planning committee this week.

going tourists. According to Danny Kaye’s report Vincent presented at Can Misses hospital on Monday complaining of abdominal pain after a suspected bout of food poisoning, but he discharged himself after he was left waiting for over 7 hours. Vincent is quoted saying "They ignored me at Can Misses so I left and after advice from Danny Whittle, I decided to go private which cost me 10,000€. The doctors at the Private Clinic informed me that I was lucky to be alive as I was just hours away from death.”

Police Car Blues & Twos The Local Police of Sant Antoni yesterday repeated their displeasure with the government team due to the condition of the police vehicle fleet. Having already denounced the situation last summer, they say only a van unfit for patrol was received. The union was assured early last summer that they would have two new police vehicles supplied, which to date have not arrived. The City Council was quick to respond and said that there are two new patrol cars due to become operational in February.

“Radiotherapy unit delayed by contractor’s belligerence", says President The Minister of Health, Martí Sansaloni, yesterday confirmed the commitment of the Balearic Government to open the radiotherapy service in Ibiza "as soon as possible and with maximum guarantees" and stated that the service contract "shall be awarded before the end of this term” in May. He explained that the committee responsible for awarding the service contract has already met a dozen times to resolve which of the two companies that have submitted tenders should be appointed. The two tenders are from the Madrid Institute of Oncology (IMO) and Clinical Juaneda de Mallorca. The latter is blocking the adjudication

process after submitting an appeal relating to unfair financial practice. President of the Consell d'Eivissa, Vicent Serra, has criticized the "belligerence" shown by the two companies involved. "We have spent many months and, frankly, I would like to take into account the impact of their actions in seeming tp deliberately put a spanner in the works.” The president said the problems "are a demonstration that the administrative process is complex, with many variables," and decided to "leave it to the officials on the appointment committee” adding “politicians can do little to shorten the process”.

Meeting with San Antonio Mayor Gutiérrez, Nick Gibbs Our lead story last week caused quite a reaction. We reported on San An’s call for Antidisturbios on the streets in the summer months, and specifically highlighted the negative PR risks of ill-considered policy statements and the way they will be used in sections of the UK press. In the report we said an interview had been requested with San An Mayor Pepita Gutiérrez, however on receiving an acceptance invitation for Monday at 12.30, I could not be sure whether the appointment had been confirmed in knowledge and sight of our ‘Dear Pepita, Please Listen’ headline or not. From the many comments received in the course of this job, and particularly around this event in person and on social media, the vast majority of feedback was in agreement to the broad thrust of the article, but you must always be mindful people are far less likely to tell you they disagree than agree. All things considered I felt I had some good questions prepared around common concern topics. I was pleased to have received 2 contacts of support from prominent people (but non-partypolitical) in the Spanish community. Well as it turned out my interviewing abilities were, thankfully I am sure, not to be weighed up against Jeremy Bowen’s BBC probe of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. On arrival at the Ajuntament I was told the Mayor did not want to give an interview today but would be pleased to talk informally and had invited the councillor responsible for Policing to join us. We talked for around 45 minutes and though it was disappointing not to be able to ask, well more to the point be able to report on, some of the questions to which I know people want to hear answers, it is perhaps better to look on the positive of it being an open door, a step in the right direction. In broad terms I can at least say that the Town Hall feel they have lines of communication open, and that nothing was said that gave me the impression they were totally closed to views and suggestions from the British and Irish community on issues that affect us directly, or affect our tourists. At the same time I would say many of the responses would surprise a lot of people in business and working in San An tourism, as having little resemblance to the reality of the world they live and work in. I feel I can relay one point that, though small in itself, is perhaps a perfect example of how greater cultural understanding could help in both directions, and how little we may know about each other in some surprising ways. The possibility of British Police coming over and working was raised, and I joked about how jealous the British Police may be in light of the grief and abuse they have to put up with when dealing with

Archaeological Site Preserved The president of the Consell d'Eivissa, Vicent Serra, signed an agreement on Friday for the island government to take temporary assignment of the archaeological site discovered during the construction of the Mercadona supermarket at Puig d'en Valls. The 2,500 square metre plot has revealed important discoveries from several periods of Ibiza’s

idiots and how I’m sure many of them would love to be able to take the more direct action of their Spanish counterparts (i.e. give a slap when a slap was appropriate) without worrying that it would signal the end of their career, be stripped of their pension, and end up being taken to court by a member of Jeremy Kyle’s audience. Their look of genuine shock was not as they couldn’t understand what the hell I was on about (obviously I didn’t explain it like that), it was due to their seemingly genuine belief that it was the other way around. That Britain had the strong empowered Police commanding the respect of the people, to a higher/greater level than Spain. Well at least we know they don’t watch Dagenham-Cop-Patrol or Cam-Cops-Live. I feel sure a greater understanding of the typical-tourist would go some good way to improving matters, and in that respect it was good to hear progress has been made on the British Bobby front with San An’s hoteliers deserving of praise for agreeing to cover their accommodation costs to remove one more obstacle on the road to making that idea a reality. As to the idea of Riot Police, those present were keen to stress that the press release was unfortunately worded, yes it said Antidisturbios, yes Spanish people would also read that as that particular brand of Riot Police, but it is not what they really meant. They did issue me a statement afterwards but it will not translate well. What they are saying is that the request for additional Police is almost a standard, they ask every year. In terms of a specialist unit their request is for “GRS agents (Reserve and Security Group), a specialized branch of the Guardia Civil, as a reinforcement for the Local Police.” I don’t know the job of this unit or how it differs to any other, but the inference was that they were nothing like as hardcore as the full on Antidisturbios. Whether this is correct, or misdirection, or whether the press release was intentionally worded using Antidisturbios to benefit from the appeal to a certain voter type, or something as simple as a secretarial error transcribing notes, I have no idea. Of course I have not even mentioned the issue that from our straw poll, our inbox, from conversations with everyone everywhere, I know to be the issue of greatest concern to the most people. “Why do we have streets full of pickpockets, prostitutes, drug dealers and counterfeiters, all working with apparent impunity?” As I said, the responses would be surprising, actually I suppose they would be anything but surprising for many of you, the responses would be exactly what you would expect - so there would be a long way to go in getting to grips with it all - but I guess we have the most basic of starts. Also in another unexpected way I think it will open the door to something potentially very good for all in our community so more on that next week.

… Ibiza in the British & Irish Press Daily Mirror & Various Young Brit Ibiza lovers jailed after £1million ecstasy drug deal at Holiday Inn A pair of young lovers have been jailed for their part in a £1million Ibiza drug operation after befriending a dealer on holiday. Leah Parkes, 28, and her boyfriend Charles Hendrie, 30, jetted to the sunny holiday hotspot for a romantic getaway in July 2013. But while they were there they met Abib Asfour, who got them into the local Ibiza drug scene. The couple helped him sell recreational drugs to clubbers for party events on the island, and then continued their illicit business when they came back to the UK. They were arrested after police connected them to a drug deal

at a Holiday Inn Express just off the M6, where a £1million MDMA drug deal was carried out on November 6, 2013. Parkes and Hendrie, both from Bury, Greater Manchester, and Asfour, of Wolverhampton, denied a charge of conspiring to supply controlled class A drugs between October 1, 2013 and November 8, 2013. The trio were found guilty however after a trial at Stafford Crown Court in October last year. On Monday both Asfour and Hendrie were jailed for 10 years while Parkes was jailed for 7 years. Sentencing, Judge Michael Challinor said: “Ibiza is a party island, drugs are readily available. “People are more likely to do something there that they would never dream of doing in the UK.”

Play Surface Stolen From New San Rafael Park British installers of an expensive commercial grade artificial grass play surface at the new San Rafael park, are calling on the community for information regarding thieves who ripped up a 15m2 section only days after the project was completed. San Antonio Town Hall had initially issued a statement condemning “a group of hooligans" for the destruction which occurred just two weeks after the park was opened on January 18. Installers Easigrass do not think it was vandalism – they say it was theft by somebody wanting to use the grass in their own property. In a commendable public spirited gesture, the Ibiza director Maurizio Fabris has agreed with London based company owner Anthony Gallagher, that they will replace the grass taken free of charge to the council, so that the residents of San Rafel can enjoy the park once again without worrying about the safety issues or the eyesore caused by the destruction. Fabris said “It is an absolute disgrace that someone in the community is willing to rob our children of a safe outdoor space, particularly in these difficult economic times, when our Council has overallocated funds in the quest to keep the next gen-

Crime down, robbery up. Year end statistics for the the Balearic Islands show that overall Crime has fallen by 13.1% in Ibiza when compared to 2014. A total of 16,632 crimes were reported last year versus 19,143 in the same period of 2013. However, robbery with violence or intimidation has increased by 9.5%, largely due to the activities of a gang of Rolex thieves who were caught in the summer. Three murders were committed, in 2014, two more than in 2013. The "iCloud" thieves betrays a mobile phone in Sant Antoni The Civil Guard and the local police in Sant Antoni de Portmany have arrested three people suspected as perpetrators in the theft of a mobile phone in Ibiza, which was discovered through an "iCloud" find my phone application. The detainees are accused of robbing a British tourist of a high-end mobile phone in August 2014, on the s'Arenal beach in Sant Antoni. After reporting the crime the visitor returned home and after 3 months received automated photos of the perpetrators in his "iCloud". Unbe-

The entire community is astounded that someone could do this to a children’s play area, spitting in the face of a local Council’s gracious efforts to improve the quality of life for local residents and their families. “ Easigrass have also offered a reward to catch the person responsible. In return for information leading to a conviction they will supply and fit their turf to an area of up to 50m2 free of charge. Speaking from the company’s Ibiza office, Andy Edwards said the theft had to have been planned and organised. “This is not like ordinary artificial grass. The way we lay it would have made it very heavy to move, and need transportation close by. We hope that somebody will see some artificial grass going down in an area of up to 15m2, or perhaps they have contracted somebody to lay it for them, that if it seems in any way dubious - irregular shaped edges, reluctant to say where it was obtained, or anything else that raises their attention, they will call us in confidence.” Contact Easigrass: 971 317 786

known to the thieves, as soon as they started to use the phone it is set to take pictures on it’s camera and send them with location information to the owner. Talamanca Parking Residents and employers in the area of Talamanca have turned their attention away from sewers for a moment, calling upon the mayor Virginia Marí to revive the Special Plan of Ses Feixes, incorporating proposals to solve the problem of parking in

the area. The plan has two options, one behind Hostal Talamanca (land already owned by the Government) and also nearby Hotel Playa Real. Virginia.

And Finally ... In an announcement that is unlikely to win any awards for tact and diplomacy, The Consell de Formentera, through the Department of Social Welfare, confirmed Tuesday that they intend to locate the new municipal morgue on part of the land where they already intend to build the island’s first old people’s home. Adding to the somewhat grim view for residents of an adjacent morgue, averting their eyes will do little to detract from that feeling heaven is knock knock knocking on their

door as the land to be developed is situated opposite the municipal cemetery of Sant Francesc Xavier. The plot on which the morgue will be built is some 10,000m2 and was acquired some years ago by the government to build Formentera’s first home for the elderly. The next step will be the drafting of plans and inviting tenders for construction. Any suggestion that the building specification includes conveyor belts between the 3 facilities would be in very bad taste indeed.

Royal Plaza Hotel, that certain something... Whilst it is always a pleasure to support those who support us, and particularly where there is a delicious lunch involved, my personal association with the Royal Plaza goes back way beyond my work with the newspaper, in fact it goes back to a time before the newspaper was even conceived. Many of us have some very special Ibiza times, work or holidays, that we can look back on as the reasons we fell in love with the Island that would eventually become home. Those times when Ibiza somehow set itself apart from all other destinations, when you realised it was special, in essence the times that made you fall in love with the island. For me Hotel Royal Plaza is very high on that list. It was at the Plaza I spent one of the most memorable weeks with the most wonderful, and typically eclectic, Ibiza family. Myself and very close friend Jerry, keen but relatively Ibiza green, an enormous gay Canadian pharmacist, a fitness freak muscle toned Californian surfer, his perky girlfriend, and a douch-bag New Yorker Chris. We buddied up one morning post club and later found all bar one were

staying at the Plaza. The rest, as they say is history but what followed was a very special part of my own introduction to the Island. Now this was way back when white furniture meant you were in a hospital and if a bed was seen outdoors somebody must be throwing it out. Royal Plaza back then was the only true 4 star in Ibiza, and in some ways I think it still is. OK you will find hotels in Ibiza that attach words like suites, and beach club to their names that may have spent massively more on furnishing a statement reception, and boasting restaurants with food concepts unintelligible to humans of only a few decades past, and some of them are fantastic. They offer a whole new option when that is what you are looking for. But I’m a sucker for good, old fashioned, and dare I say very English levels of smart without flash and service without intrusion - and in a world of show and shout it is that quiet quality that the Royal Plaza give you in it’s stride. Our lunch of some local delicacies to start - hams,

prawns and bread was followed by the most sublime Arroz con Bogavante - cooked, served and enjoyed as well as each is possible to achieve. This week is a very special weekend for Royal Plaza fans - their Valentine banquet, one of several through the year and always a very popular night. See details above and call for availability. This is why we love the Plaza.

otorists caught speeding in Europe can be tracked down and fined throughout the E.U.”

Motorists caught speeding in Europe could be tracked down and fined at home under new EU rules Currently, drivers caught by speed cameras abroad cannot be traced But new measures will give police the power to send fines to addresses in driver’s home countries.

There will be a few drivers of UK plated cars in Ibiza suddenly sweating despite the cold spell. Motorists caught speeding in Europe face being tracked down and fined, under controversial new EU rules. At present, drivers caught by a speed camera while in their own

car abroad cannot be fined because EU police forces do not have the power to trace people. But the European Parliament is expected to back new measures giving foreign police forces the power to send fines to overseas addresses and pursue motorists through the home country courts if they do not pay. Motorists can already be traced if they are were driving hire cars or caught by police officers on the side of the road. The new rules, which are expected to be easily passed by the European Parliament, will allow motorists to be fined for speeding, ignoring a red light, drink and drug driving and driving while using a mobile phone.

If a driver commits an offence in another country, the police will be able to use their car's registration number to track them down. They will be given the power to send out a letter in the driver's own language, demanding payment and threatening court action if they do not pay the fine. The rules will be reciprocal throughout the E.U. If approved, the Bill will apply to member states from May – but individual countries will have time to enforce the new law. The move, which is backed by ministers, has been welcomed by road safety campaigners. Ed Morrow, from the UK organisation Brake, said: 'For a driver

Illegal driving crosses borders, so enforcement must cross borders too.' A spokesperson for the UK Department for Transport said 'It's not right that foreign drivers have gone unpunished for speeding offences in the UK, and we are pleased this is set to change. Spanish MEP, Ines Ayala Sender, is the EU Parliament's negotiator on the issue. She has claimed the move would help cut road deaths by 50 per cent. She said: 'Citizens are, of course, never thrilled to receive a letter telling

them they have been caught committing a traffic offence, but they do welcome the fact that everyone in the EU will be treated equally, no matter where their vehicle is registered.' But, Edmund King, the AA president, said: 'In theory, tracking down drivers who break the law driving in other countries might sound like a good idea in terms of road safety but in practice it could be a nightmare as countries have many different rules. If a driver received a penalty for driving in a “restricted lane" in Spain they may wish to contest it but this would prove impossible in most cases as often photo evidence is not provided and returning to Europe for a court case is prohibitive in costs.

Amanda O’Riordan Greetings Zipsters. We’re on the cusp of Valentines Day, and if you’re still feeling the pinch after Christmas, guess who has just launched a cut price Lingerie range? Lidl. Yes – you heard me correctly. Lidl, better known for its competitively priced and obscurely branded food, has announced the launch of its first ever lingerie and jewellery line, entitled ‘See You In Venice’. With the first of four collections due for release this year, pieces are priced as inexpensively as Lidl food, and if you’re not a fan of the shop you’ll be pleasantly surprised. But of course, the real allure of the collection is the price tag – bras and briefs are £3.99 each & the wrap is £4.99. The lingerie is is part of a larger collection, inspired by Venice, going on sale on February 26 - and any doubters out there should note that in August the shop’s Autumn fashion range sold out within days. Check out the full collection when it lands in stores across the UK. I just wish they’d change their shopping bags! Now I just sound like a snob. The only problem is that the lingerie won’t be available in time for Valentines Day itself, but make sure it’s a belated gift from your other half and an excuse to eat chocolates instead on the 14th. So, onto this week’s blog and we go all old school with the return of Levi 501 Red Tabs. So snuggle up because its freezing out there. We’ve been sub zero for most of this week so I’m going to sit back and dream of Balearic blueskies. Enjoy this week’s Zips It Up. Winter Wear &Wellbeing ... Sophia V. Between seasons can be confusing on the fashionfront. Sunny outside, but a little breezy. What to wear? You can’t go wrong with jeans (straight legged or baggy), trousers, or leggings. Skirts and shorts also look great teamed with tights, whether it’s sheer, or woolly. For warmth, there is a huge selection of styles, from polo-neck, jumper dresses, off-theshoulder, patterned, plain and emblazoned with taglines. Long sleeve blouses are also ideal and still look dressy. Ankle or thigh high boots work well with practically anything, and colour coordinated with a handbag, or belt is even better. Vests and t-shirts can still be worn on chilly days, especially with a classic blazer, oversized cardigan, leather jacket, parka, mac or ordinary coat. Of an evening, dresses with tights offer glamour and comfort. If you’re not keen on tights, a long maxi dress, gown, or skirt still stand out in a club, bar or restaurant, and again can be worn with a jacket. Fur is also another winter trend that is never out of fashion magazines, whether it’s a hat, coat, or bag. For the bitter nights, gloves may need to be worn. A variety of gloves from leather, wool, even fingerless (for mobile-use) can be purchased everywhere. If you’re missing your summer suntan, tanning wipes/towels are brilliant for a non-patchy glow and easy to apply. The colour usually lasts about a week. Recommended brands are: L’Oreal sublime bronze, Nivea sun touch, Garnier Ambre Solair, however the cheaper brands work just as well. Alternatively,

pant style shorts – just to take me back to my youth. I’ll just about manage to pull them off with a balearic tan in Ibiza and Mallorca this summer. Lets not forget the classic white Tee, the essential accompaniment. Prices start at £70. http://www.levi.com

tanning lotions can be applied with a tanning mitt. Again, the following brands are highly recommended for that flawless result. Winter nail varnish colours that are trending at the moment are blues, silvers, pearly white and pinks, which look even better with added glitter. Also, to keep those nails nice and strong, apply a coat of clear strengthening varnish. With the cold drying out your hair, don’t forget to use oil weekly: Argan, Morrocan, Coconut, and Olive work wonders. Intensive conditioning masks are also cheap and effective. In respect of dry skin, for reasonably priced moisturisers try Cocoa butter, Simple, Nivea, Clinique, and my tried and tested favourite in Pharmacies in Ibiza – Uriage Hyseac soothing moisturiser. So, wrap up warm, but still look the part in these Winter months.

“It’s Carnival time!

Next week sees the main towns in Ibiza celebrate carnival (‘carnaval’ in Spanish or Mardi Gras as it’s also known in other parts of the world). It is the festive season that takes place before Lent in many countries and is usually characterised by a celebration and parade through the streets before the seriousness of fasting or giving up of something for Lent begins. It might not rival carnival in Rio, but it’s taken very seriously in Ibiza. Many of the local schools, dance schools and associations take part, alongside individuals who compete for prizes for the best costumes, choreography and artistic direction. It’s also an excuse for the local population to dress up and participate in the fun, which many do.” Claire B., Nicole Torres, Nick Gibbs

Letter From Juan Well you can’t say I didn’t warn you that our winter was still to come and what chilly week we have had. There has also been a postscript to my skiing holiday not only did we get a sign across the motorway in France with my number plate plastered across it telling me that I was going “Trop Vite” but I also had a nasty letter the other day from the Guardia on the mainland saying I was over the speed limit on the AP7 with the appropriate fine. In my defence I would say it was not always easy on that Motorway to know exactly what the speed limit was as it varied so much. Also, I must admit even if I did know it was extremely difficult not to go fast when there were only about four cars on a stretch of two hours on the motorway. On the subject of speeding, don’t forget at this time of year the Police don’t have as much to do and so they are often out and about trying to make sure we behave ourselves and stay within the limit and checking up on our car documents. Mind you, the speed limits go up and down on the Ibizan roads like a yo-yo. So beware! On a completely different track, how are your New Year’s resolutions going? I am still on track with my no drinking in February (well it is the shortest month) and it has had the added bonus of not only saving money on not purchasing the wine but also it has meant that we haven’t dared to go out for a meal in case we are tempted to drink! So just over a couple of weeks to go and then we can go out and paint the town red mind you it means St Valentine’s dinner might be a bit of a subdued, that is always assuming we last that long! So, from a very sober Juan, wrap up warm and have a good week. Yours, Juan.

View from the Pew Flowers, candy, red hearts and romance. That's what Valentine's day is all about, right? Well, maybe not. The origin of this holiday for the expression of love really isn't romantic at all - at least not in the traditional sense. Valentine, the man behind the holiday, was a Roman Priest during the reign of an emperor called Claudius who persecuted the church. He also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died. The idea of encouraging young couples to marry within the Christian church was what Valentine was about. And he secretly married them because of the edict. Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second. There are legends surrounding Valentine's actions while in prison. One of the men who were to judge him in line with the Roman law at the time was a man called Asterius, whose daughter was blind. Valentine prayed with and healed the young girl with such astonishing effect that Asterius himself became Christian as a result. In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a cruel death because of his stand for Christian marriage. The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius' daughter. He inspired today's romantic missives by signing it, "from your Valentine". Meanwhile St. Valentine has come to be known as the patron saint of lovers. The Bible gives us the perfect definition of what Love really is

Over the last few years there has been a growth in popularity of growing plants on walls. This is not just growing climbing plants but actually fixing containers to walls and planting them up with a variety of plants including herbs and vegetables. There are several benefits of growing plants on walls such as protecting the wall from extremes of weather such as heavy rain, frosts and winds. Extreme heat on walls can also affect the performance on the building material. Green walls offer insulation from both cold and sun as the plants help to keep warmth in a building in winter and keep the walls cooler during the summer months. Sound insulation is also improved by adding green walls. The other benefits are that plants can help to soften the visual buildings by adding a green covering as well as improving air quality in cities. As with all plants insect life will be encouraged to prosper which helps the environment. Planting fruit trees against a wall and training them as espaliers or growing grapes against the wall by training the vine against the

surface count as green walls but one of the most useful aspects of this type of gardening is growing herbs, fruits and vegetables on the wall. This is a really great way of growing produce in a confined space. There are different systems sold to fix to walls that can be used to grow vegetables so when choosing a system some thought should be taken about the depth of roots systems so that plants will thrive on the wall. Edible plants suitable for a shady wall are alpine strawberries. chard, chives, land cress lambs lettuce. Parsley and rocket. In sunny positions Strawberries that are seed raised ever bearers, oregano, thyme. An irrigation system can be added to increase the variety of plants that can be grown because it should be remembered that containers will dry out quite quickly.. Plants that are grown for their flowers can also be cultivated on green walls but these will need to be irrigated. Begonias and

busy lizzies are good choices for shady walls as well as sunny spots and ivy leaved perlagoliums verbena and petunias. There are the shade tolerant plants such as ajuga reptens, heuchera, fuchsias, lamiums, cornus and ferns that will do well on this type of walls. Some people just plant one or two types of plant to get a green effect these are usually chosen from the many types of ferns available or sedum, hosta’s and even some of the smaller leaved ivies. One great thing about green walls is that they can also be grown indoors in a green house, conservatory or anywhere there is sufficient light available. This will also allow for a longer growing season if the area is heated, but remember that plants grown indoors will need regular watering. John Hitchin, can be contacted via:-

Mindfulness Sabina Brownstein You have the freedom to choose whom you wish to be every minute of your life. This is the gift of Free Will, but most people have never learned how to use it. One reason for this is that your subconscious mind will always take over when your conscious mind is not paying attention. This subconscious mind can only repeat things from your past conditioning, so most of the time we are automatically repeating old patterns of behaviour - we are reacting instead of acting. The way to restore your free will and regain control of your life is through mindfulness, which simply means having the awareness to make conscious choices rather than being run by old subconscious programming. Doris Love the World - Stupid Cupid We joined to celebrate the Goddess, some call her Brigid, There s a Christian version too, virginal (and frigid?), Patron Saint of poetry, midwives, Smiths and hearth, They recommend a nice soak in a sea-salt bath, I’d be lucky to have that much water in me tank, Last time tried to fill it, only the plug hole sank! Someone kind and generous, not cruel or callous, Yes, we’re here to celebrate rebirth of the Spring! Birds, bees, wild flowers, drumming up to sing “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, Come on girls, kick our heels, it’s time to have a ball” Let's strip off our marigolds, naked in moonlight, Warts, wrinkles, hairy legs, every sorry sight! The maiden has come back to life, but so too has the crone, Healing words of merriment down the hollow bone, So let’s dream a brave new world, kindness, care and love, Communities in harmony blessed from up above, Last week’s Full Moon of expansion, Jupiter in Leo, Circus parade, carnival, dance like they do in Rio, Flying out with bright feathers, no more pain and greed, With luck of the Irish, I declare Brigid freed! Just in time for Valentines - perhaps I’ll find the man, To clean my dodgy waste pipe and reverse park me van, Grout between those ageing tiles, fill in all me cracks, Hump wood from the back of car, stuck there in them sacks, Replace taps and rusty pipes, and not call me stupid If I forget what day it is - it’s in the hands of Cupid! Luv doris, the new age guru x www.dorisandfriends.com doristlc@hotmail.com

A mindful person remembers to resist their automatic reactions and then chooses to follow the guidance of their inner wisdom. For example, suppose you come into a certain type of situation that has always made you angry in the past. The anger starts to rise within you, and then… you stop for a second… mentally you take a step back from the situation... you ask yourself this question: Is this who I want to be in this situation? Listen for the answer that comes from your heart – it will always take you in the right direction. Mindfulness gives you the space to choose whom you wish to be. Instead of blindly reacting with anger you can choose to deal with the situation in a more positive way. This sounds very simple but it is not always so easy. In fact it can be quite a challenge because you must overcome an entire lifetime of following your subconscious programming - the ideas, actions and beliefs you inherited from your past. Even when you are determined to be mindful you may still continue to think, say and do things that are not in harmony with whom you wish to be… and that is OK. It is natural for these engrained reactions to persist, but don’t worry because that resistance will eventually melt away if you maintain your intention to be mindful. The simple key is to become aware of when you have unconsciously followed one of your old patterns of behaviour… and then gently correct yourself. That’s all you have to do! Your mind will automatically start to create new pathways in your brain that are aligned with your new choices, and your old inherited reactions will gradually lose their strength. This type of positive change requires you to make a commitment to mindfulness, just like building muscles requires a commitment to working out at the gym. Intention and practice are the “exercises” necessary to create positive changes in your life. You have the power to shape your personality and behaviour in ways that are better for you and for the people around you. As an example, try this the next time you are locked into a difference of opinion with somebody. Your old conditioning usually tells you to go on and on trying to prove your point. Mindfulness allows you to stop and ask yourself: “Would I rather be right or happy?”. The best answer is always “happy”, and when you make that choice the disagreement that you were having suddenly won’t seem so important anymore.

Kevin Russell The recent tragic death of cricketer Phillip Hughes highlights to us how fragile the brain is even though it is covered by the hard skull bone, the cranium. During a match he was hit by a cricket ball at the base of the skull causing one of the major arteries to open causing massive haemorrhage. It was a freak accident the cricket ball hitting the exact exposed 'soft spot' causing such extensive damage. Many of the head injuries seen in Ibiza are a result of assaults, the infamous ‘balconying’ tourists or innocuous falls especially in the elderly. Globally approximately 1 in 2000 people will die from head injuries. Symptoms depend on the location of the brain injury. The skull (which is made up of several fused bones) is thinner in some parts and therefore more fragile for example the temporal bone above the ear. Facial bones protect the brain as well as the eyes from a frontal impact. Obvious symptoms include bleeding, pain and reduced consciousness. Often it can be difficult to assess the extent of symptoms because they can be masked by alcohol or drugs. More subtle signs include loss of memory, lethargy, loss of concentration or mood swings. The most well known and widely used assessment tool is the Glasgow Coma Scale, developed in Glasgow Royal Hospital during the 60s and 70s as a quick way of assessing a head injury and patients consciousness. It assesses response to: pain and body movement, eye movement and speech. It’s a useful tool when monitoring head injuries, as it is easy to see if patients are deteriorating or improving. Symptoms need to be closely monitored, as internal bleeding such as intracranial, subarachnoid or subdural haemorrhage can't be ruled out until the person has had a CT or an MRI scan. These radiological tests are used to determine the existence of a haemorrhage, excess fluid around the brain or a blood thrombosis. In Ibiza if a haemorrhage is confirmed the person will be transferred to the specialist neurological unit in Son Espases Hospital in Palma, for observation or for surgical intervention if needed. Severe head injury can result in permanent disability similar to those experienced by people who have had a stroke such as paraplegia or dysarthria. Hormonal changes may also occur particularly if the pituitary gland, which is situated at the base of the brain, is damaged. Some sports can also prove to be dangerous. A recent small study by the Radiological Society of America found that boys of between 16 and 18 years of age had brain abnormalities similar to those seen in mild traumatic brain injury. The main reason given was that upon impact the brain moves inside the skull causing damage, the harder it is hit the more damage caused. This happened even though the players were wearing helmets and didn’t report any pain or injury. Thursday 12th to Wednesday 18th February ARIES – King of Cups (reversed) Authority is the key issue this week. However, as this King is reversed, you’ll have to deal with those who seek to challenge your authority. This of course is just an outer mirror of what’s going on in your inner world. Maybe you need to examine areas of your life where you have no self-authority and apply some self-discipline. TAURUS – Strength You’re able to show others just how strong and resilient you are, especially if the going gets tough this week. Whatever presents itself as a challenge is easily dealt with and you are an inspiration to friends, family or colleagues when it comes to dealing with obstacles. Stand your ground, but do so with dignity. Resist the urge for revenge. GEMINI – The Fool Trust is a key issue for you this week. The Fool card certainly doesn’t mean you are one; quite the opposite in fact. He’s urging you to take risks and to have self-belief. That it doesn’t matter, follow your heart and believe in your intuition. There are no wrong moves; it’s your reaction to unfolding events that makes the difference. CANCER – Seven of Swords You have to deal with some sneaky behaviour this week; if you’re involved with anything legal, it might be better to settle out of court. You know you’re in the right, but that won’t stop others from trying to belittle you in some way. You get hurt when others can’t be happy for you and act in a jealous way. LEO – Ace of Cups This card promises that good news is on its way. A fresh start with a fresh perspective is needed, but you need to listen to your intuition and not with your head. Feelings should be acted upon and not dismissed as unimportant. If you make logical decisions you will be making them for the wrong reasons and it could backfire. VIRGO – The World This week brings a new cycle into at least one area of your life, career, domestic setups, relationships are in a state of positive progress. Your inner world is also changing are you’re willing to be more flexible and accommodating of new ideas. Move forward with confidence and optimism; the world is your oyster so capitalise on lucky breaks. LIBRA – Two of Pentacles You’re weighing up different scenarios and are unsure which path to take. Indecision will drive you crazy if you keep yo-yoing your thoughts. Last week’s card The World was a call to action; what are you waiting for? If finances are a problem, change your thinking as you won’t attract the money flow if you feel you don’t deserve it. SCORPIO – Justice Practice skills in discernment. Weigh up everything you’re being presented; in all areas of your life. What counts most is how you react to what you’re being shown or told. You’re at a pivotal point where changes are on your horizon. A new life direction beckons and you must decide what you take with you and what you leave behind. SAGITTARIUS – Eight of Swords You feel besieged this week, as if there is no way out of a certain situation. Don’t put all your stress eggs into one basket! Not everything is bleak and if you stopped struggling with problems you would find solutions. Nor can you do it alone; seek trusted advice from professionals or friends who have your best interests at heart. CAPRICORN – Four of Pentacles (reversed) OK, so it’s back to the drawing board for some this week as much cherished plans don’t pan out as expected. What seemed dead certain is no longer viable. Well, think on this. Maybe this wasn’t meant to be and was a false start or dead end proposal. Get cracking with a new plan; one that will be bomb proof. AQUARIUS – Queen of Pentacles Sofia, the Greek goddess of wisdom has a special affinity with this card. You’re being called to handle difficult situations with wisdom, therefore you have her cosmic support and guidance, so don’t worry about speaking your mind. You’re not acting in a self-interested way and this will be recognised. Earth sign women, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn prove helpful and informative. PISCES – Ten of Swords Look after your health and well-being, nothing in excess otherwise you could experience a setback that literally sets back your whole week! Keep your thoughts positive as you might be experiencing a dip in energy which makes you feel more vulnerable than usual. The good news about this card is that it’s only temporary and that brighter days are ahead.

Sport (Continued from page 16)

What a legend, having ridden more than 4,300 winners with his first win over the jumps coming in September '94 and spanning a period of 21 years. Perhaps and to coin a phrase, he was “the Real McCoy”! Cricket

'Tis all happening Down Under at the mo' with all the international teams having warm-up games before the World Cup gets under way this w/end. England, having reached the Final of the Tri-Series recently, look to be getting in to gear at last, as they stuffed the West Indies earlier today (Monday) bowling them out for a measly 122 in only 29 of the 50 overs, and then reaching 125-1 to record a 9 wicket win. Captain Morgan (good ole rum, that!) and his team face favourites Australia in the first match of their Group on Saturday and with 49 odd matches over the next month, a gluttony of cricket is on the cards. My tips? Hmmm, Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa to reach the Semis with one of the first two to win outright! Footie

Biggest news of the week was dear ole Our 'Arry Redknapp resigning from QPR, citing the fact that he needs surgery for his knees! What? More like the fact that he's fed up with his team's performances (no points from 11 away matches all season) but does he really need the hassle. Shame really, because I always enjoyed writing about him but

Page 15

(continued from back page) my money is on Tim Sherwood to replace him. Bit of confusion too over Leicester's manager Nigel Pearson, as, according to the media on Sunday morning, he had been sacked not true, said Leicester on Sunday afternoon so he lives to fight another day then. Both teams prop up the Premier, after both lost at home by the same 1-0 score line, Rangers to Southampton and Leicester to Crystal Palace and what a diff new manager Alan Pardew has made to the ole Pally as they're now sitting pretty almost mid-table and 6 points from the danger zone. Still in said danger zone, Hull did themselves a real favour with a backsto-the-wall 1-1 draw at Man City and were so unlucky not to win as City needed a 90th minute equalizer to rescue un point. Meanwhile, 5th from bottom Aston Villa came out fighting at Villa Park against leaders Chelsea and didn't help their cause by conceding an 8th minute goal but then, after nearly 11 hours without a goal in the Premier, actually did score to draw level. However, the Blues aren't leaders for nought, and promptly scored the winner 18 minutes later to extend their lead at the top over City to 7 points and give Jose his first win at Villa Park after 5 meetings. Man Utd dropped to 4th after a pretty dour 1-1 draw at West Ham, Tottenham came back from a goal down to in-form Arsenal at the Lane in the North London derby, with a brace from that man Harry Kane to record his

22nd of the season (he's gotta play for England now, surely!) and that result made a mockery of the Gunner's Aaron Ramsey who commented before the match that “we're only 11 points off the top so we can still win the League”. Sorry, mate, but that's now 14 points! Talking of derbies, Everton eked out a pretty tame scoreless draw with Liverpool in Stevie G's final Merseyside derby whilst, elsewhere Sunderland collected yet another draw, their 12th this season, 1-1 at Swansea and finally, Newcastle drew 1-1 at home to Stoke and Burnley drew 2-2 at home to West Bromwich Albion. With the FA Cup taking preference this w/end and, arguably, the hopes of the Middle 3 of Arsenal, Man U and Liverpool (oops, that's gonna upset a whole array of fans and friends but hey, así es la vida!) to secure their only chance of silverware this season, there are midweek games this week so above will, no doubt, all change. La Liga

A big shock here in España, where leaders Real Madrid were given a trouncing, yet again, by city opponents Atlético, this time 4-0, proving once and for all that Simeone's team have the jinx on Real, this result completing the Liga double and having already knocked them out of the Copa del Rey. To make it even worse, Barça won, so now only a point between the top 2 now, with Atlético 3 points behind. The UK Press

Finally, great to see that one of

It’s a Madrid thing, Atletico trounce Real 4-0

my favourite sports journalists, Ollie Holt has moved from the Mirror to the Mail on Sunday, replacing one of my least favourites, that ole buffer Patrick Collins who, at last, has decided

to call it a day. 'Bout time too, mate! 'Tis all for now and let's hope that Paddy doesn't read the Ibizan! Jez

Sport The Ibizan, Thursday 12th February 2015, Issue 770

Jezza´s Sports Report Jeremy Parmenter Ahhh! Reading Johnny Ruckard's Ibiza Rugby report in last week's edition, and his reference to Nightingale Valley, brought back some great memories for me, as we, as a young family, had a tradition back in the '60's and used to go up there almost every Sunday, especially in the Spring, for a picnic and drink the natural, pure waters from the mini-canals that fed the valley. In fact, and for Johnny's info, it was my Dad (certainly not a hippy back then!) who coined the name as we were always serenaded by the nightingales that inhabited the valley. Not sure about the Moors, tho', think it may have been even earlier! Rugby Union

what a brilliant start for England in the first match of the 6 Nations, as being underdogs due to the fact that 12 English internationals were missing due to injury, but especially in the cauldron of the Millenium, the Red Rose weathered the Welsh storm and having gone in at half-time only 16-8 down, rallied themselves (don't panic, Mr Mannering!) and came out for the second and literally blew the Dragon away with 13 unanswered points to win 21-16. All hail Lancaster's bold selection and hats off

to the Bath trio (Ford, Joseph and Watson) in the backs as they scored all the points in fact, if Attwood's “try” had been allowed not only would it have been more of a humiliation for Wales but the whole Bath contingent would have scored. Italy next up at Twickers on Valentine's which should, on paper at least, be slightly easier as the Azurri lost their first match against champions Ireland in Rome 26-3, although it must be said the Irish were not their usual zippy selves. Must be catching as in Paris the French went tryless but still beat a much-improved Scotland 15-8 and face Ireland in Dublin on Saturday. On the domestic scene and in the Anglo-Welsh Cup (why, oh why, do they play Cup matches on an International w/end when half the teams are understrength?) there were wins for the Ospreys, Leicester, Gloucester, Newcastle, Northampton, Sale, Saracens and Gwent Dragons, with the results confirming an all-English semifinal line up with Leicester taking on holders Exeter at Welford Road and Saracens agin Northampton at Allianz Park. Rugby League

to their campaign, over the Catalan Dragons, and elsewhere there were wins for Warrington, Hull, Leeds and Wakefield whilst last year's runners up, Wigan drew with Widnes.

Horse Racing

Not a regular sport in this column, but all the plaudits must go to 19-time Champion Jockey Irishman A.P. McKoy (40) who announced his retirement over

the w/end at the end of the season, and to cap it all, rode his 200th winner this season at Newbury, the 9th time he has hit the double century in a season. (Continued on page 15)
