The Fine Police

In a fine initiative by some clearly fine fellows, a group of Guardia Civil officers deserve credit for their initiative of establishing a help and advice forum to assist ex-pat motorists in Spain understand the often complicated Trafico Laws. The officers first decided to set up a facebook page with advice and information in English. They could not have expected the phenomenal growth that followed, with their ‘N332’ facebook page, increasing from a handful of followers only a few weeks ago to now around 6,000 people interested in driving and traffic laws in Spain. The

Guardia Civil officers behind the campaign have been asking their followers what else they would like to see in the future. Having asked whether their followers would be interested in an eBook, magazine or other publication, they say they now have a clearer picture of how to develop the information source in the near future and beyond. Firstly, they have found that many of the questions asked by new followers are duplicates of information they have already published. Therefore, they are now in the process of creating a new website where they will catalogue the

articles which will then allow you to search and read through any of the information they have already posted. Secondly, they have decided for now to set up a free newsletter, which they will send by email on a regular basis, probably monthly initially. You can sign up to be added to the mailing list by visiting the secure page on the website, http://n332.es/newsletter-signup/ or by sending an email to news@n332.es with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line. Hippy Ibiza Photographic Exhibition of Josep Soler’s Hippy Ibiza Josep Soler was born in Barcelona in 1935. From a young age he was attracted by photography and quickly joined the Photographic Agrupació de Catalunya. It was with the club he made his first trip to Ibiza over forty years ago, and he was fascinated by the cultural contrasts he found on the island. He decided to return alone to capture the lives of both the hippies who were by then coming to the island in considerable numbers, and also the farmers who still lived relatively simply in the countryside . Today, his photography is essential to understanding that era in Ibiza’s history. An exhibition of his work is now on display at the Exhibition Hall of Santa Eulalia. There are over 330 images on display until March 2nd.

Josep Soler on display until March 2nd San Jose Rise in Illegal Taxis. The Local Police of Sant Josep filed 163 cases of illegal transportation in 2014, 20 percent more than in 2013. The borough officers prevented 2,179 attempts at beach trade by unlicensed vendors in the municipality. The mayor Neus Mari, together with Councillor for Secu-

rity, Serafin Grivé, presented their annual operational review at Wednesdays security committee meeting. Mayor Mari explained the work and results of a special beach squad working from June 16 to August 31. It was also reported that the new Municipal Ordinances governing Noise and Vibration has resulted

Port Authority Strikes Back Port Authority Reject Council position. APB says “Ports are responsibility of the State” The president of the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB), Alberto Pons, held a press conference on Thursday in which he responded to the objections and ongoing disagreement with Ibiza Town Council regarding the Port redevelopment. Pons argues that Ibiza’s Port falls within the ‘general interest’ category and as such is covered under legislation that specifically decrees "those ports that are declared of general interest are the responsibility of the State". The port authority president said that in this respect the council were

acting outside of their authority, and in direct response to the statement issued by a spokesman for Ibiza Town that "Ibiza is a city with a port, not a port city," went on to say "the port is of general interest and it is indeed all citizens, not only the city of Ibiza but the whole island that have direct interest in the port and it’s facilities." The president of the APB confirmed the disagreement with the council centres on some areas of redevelopment including the amount of car parking, and the building at servicing facilities at Es Martell'. Pons said that, given the difficulty of reaching an agreement, and with elections looming, the Port Authority has decided to "wait until the elections and resume talks with the new leaders."

in 39 complaints since coming into force last September. Formentera Meets Neta, Their First Police Dog. Formentera Local Police yesterday presented its first member of the canine unit. 'Neta' is a German Shepherd bitch four-yearold who has been trained for the detection of drugs and various other dog duties. Neta’s owner and trainer, Andreu Torres, said that her abilities include "attack, personal defence, drug detection and tracking.” During the demonstration "Neta" found small bags of different substances under a car and demonstrated expertise dealing with an actors wearing a protective rubber suit. The ceremony was attended by President of the Consell Insular, Jaume Ferrer, and the head of security, Joan Mayans. Bargain Hunters Flock To Stocks Fair La Feria de Stocks de Sant Antoni, which celebrated its eleventh year in 2014, reported strong sales over the weekend. The event is designed for sellers of primarily clothing, footwear and accessories to clear their old stocks. Speaking during the event which is held in the public marquee on Fountains Square, stallholder Eva Verdú said her

children's clothing and footwear had sold very well and that the success was due to both residents and tourist attending. "At noon, when the Mass ends, it is full of Imserso tourists. It is an opportunity for Imserso visitors to take home a gift for their grandchildren at a great price."

ISBA Grant 1Mill€ In 2014 In 2014 the ‘Sociedad de Garantía Recíproca ISBA de Balears’ (Mutual Guarantee Society) granted nearly one million euros in loans (ie, 996,000 euros) to facilitate the creation of 14 new companies in the Pitiüses, according to data provided by the institution. The total amount of funding to entrepreneurs in Ibiza and Formentera increased by 75% from the 566,000 euros of 2013 to the 966,000 last year. The society said that the 14 new companies have generated 85 new jobs in various areas. The average amount of loan was 71,000€.

Hung Government Forecast Survey Says Balearic Government Will Be Hung. PSIB and PP would need support for majority. With just three months to the upcoming regional elections, the future political landscape is wide open with neither of the main parties predicted to win an outright majority in the Balearic Parliament. So says the survey conducted by the Balearic Institute of Social Studies (IBES), which gives a maximum of 27 seats to the Popular Party, leaving them three short of an absolute majority. The PP is predicted to remain the largest party in the Balearics, but they would need to form coalitions with other

smaller groups to govern. The IBES survey puts the new Podermos group, who have risen as the surprise new force in Spanish politics, in a marginal third place, with little to choose between them and the PSIBPSOE in terms of voting intentions. The Podermos political party was set up just over a year ago by five university lecturers. Party leader Pablo Iglesias describes the group as “neither left wing nor right wing”, and their mantra of “Goodbye to the corrupt class that governs us” has found widespread support, putting them in first place ahead of both the PP and PSOE in national polls conducted in January.

Euro Commission Ready to Take Action Vicent Serra gets European Commissioner's commitment to fight exploration. The European Commission will act against oil exploration if Spain’s central government gives the go ahead to further testing. The president of the Consell d'Eivissa, Vicent Serra, gained this commitment from the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Environment, Karmenu Vella, in his meeting last week in Brussels. Also in attendance were Balearic Government Minister, Biel Company, Ibiza’s Councillor for the Environment, Pepa Costa, and a representative of Oceana, Nicolas Fournier, who was invited in the absence of the President of the Con-

sell de Formentera. Minister Biel Company said it was essential to "step over" the national government and seek European intervention in alliance with all affected countries of the Mediterranean to prevent surveys throughout the area, “since they can have a negative impact on us all”. The Balearic delegation also handed the Commissioner petitions and discussed the level of social mobilization against surveys in Ibiza and around the archipelago. The delegates had a frank discussion around the illegality of tests carried out already during 2013.

vehicle access to the island. The issue has been raised following meetings in the last few months of Formentera’s Consell d'Entitats which comprises representatives of around 80 local associations. After the meeting Jaume Ferrer said "We have agreed to start the path towards a draft bill to regulate the entry of vehicles on the island. To this end we will form a study group including one representative of each political party, plus each their own advisor, the Councillor for Tourism, Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President of the Consell d'Entitats, our secretary, a legal advisor, Angel Navarro and if necessary additional external consultants ". Jaume Ferrer noted that it is a complex task that will take several months, but "we have political consensus and the will of the people to get the job done”. The next meeting is scheduled for March 10 and then every 15 days until the end of April. Once past the elections of May 24, Ferrer said that "whatever the results are, we will remain committed to resume our meetings with the aim of having a draft proposal for presentation to the Spanish Parliament in the next legislature”.

Fiestas in full swing The Fiestas de Santa Eulalia have continued with more events over the weekend. These include a treasure hunt organized by the Youth Group 'nos Mola' 10 groups entered the treasure hunt, among which there were Disney princesses, peasants, lifeguards and ghosts. The design of the new building has been conceived with input from neighbourhood associations. It will be built on a municipal plot of nearly a thousand square meters, located at the corner of the Pica-Soques and Puig des Damians streets. The center will have an area of 260 square meters and will feature an open public area and two multifunctional rooms. The tender budget is 572,554 euros. "This center is a longstanding demand of residents and an election commitment," said the mayor, Neus Marí, who commented that both neighbourhoods have grown significantly in the last decade.

The Director General of Ports and Airports, Antonio Deudero, chaired Monday’s Committee on Development of Ibiza’s Air Routes, in which the Biennial Plan 2015-2016 was approved. During the meeting the members

analysed last season’s record statistics of over 6.2 million passengers travelling through Ibiza airport. The Biennial Plan includes the new objectives of developing additional winter routes to serve markets in Germany, the United Kingdom, Holland and Italy. Furthermore, the reduction of seasonality was addressed, as well as diversification of supply routes to other channels. There was widespread support to the news that airport taxes are to be frozen until 2025.

The Fine Police, from front page free is because they think it´s important to reach as many expats as possible, and a free service is more likely to achieve this. They are investing a lot of time in providing the service though and they hope to get donations from advertisers in the future in order to help raise money for charitable groups, to maintain the website and the newsletter. The website is available now at www.n332.es, but there is still a lot of work to do on both the website and the newsletter, so they ask visitors to be patient. Once complete it will provide a valuable resource to accompany the Facebook page, where they promise to still remain interactive with you and respond to your questions. We contacted the officers behind the service, both in wishing to congratulate them on an initiative focussing on integration and cooperation, and to ask a little more about their plans. “Thanks Nick” said Francisco, a traffic police officer and the community manager of the Facebook Page. “Many local medias have started to contact us about our idea of creating a webpage and a newsletter, you are welcome to publish it on your website. If you want we can send you the articles you consider more interesting. We will have meetings with several Town Halls to discuss how can we help them. Please if we can help you writing any article to help you to inform expats in Ibiza, let me know.” Very fine fellows indeed. Francisco went on to say that now they do need some help. “Now we are looking for people to help us to translate all information we receive from the DGT / Guardia Civil so if you know volunteers who speak both languages please let me know.” Their facebook page alone is a great source of information covering all manner of important and interesting information - all motorists would do well to take a look. ourism Business Fines Double To €220k In 2014” 36 issued by Consell to 29 establishments in 2014

The Consell d'Eivissa completed a total of 1,543 inspections of activities and tourist establishments in 2014, from which 247 'informative proceedings' were opened (in other words, investigations into irregularities). The outcome was that a total of 36 penalties were issued to 29 different establishments. Among those penalties were cases considered minor, serious and very serious under the criteria of the Tourism Act, and they collectively resulted in the Consell raising a total of €219,227. The statistics show that sanctions in 2014 doubled compared to 2013 despite their being fewer inspections. In 2013 a total of 1.720 inspections resulted in 18 sanctions. The 2014 ratio of 1

sanction in every 43 inspections is over double that of 1 in 96 in 2013. The Consell said that the fall in the number of inspections is due to the department being short staffed during the year. Fines were issued ranging from 8,700€ for minor infringements to 160,527 for the most serious. Shark Found Dead on s'Arenal Technicians from the 'Centro de Recuperación de Especies Marines' C.R.E.M. joined Local Police on Tuesday following the discovery of a 4 metre tiger shark found dead on the s'Arenal beach in San Antonio. Forest fire bee-keeper acquittal confirmed The Supreme Court has upheld the acquittal of the bee-keeper that caused the largest wildfire in Eivissa's recorded history. The fire burned 1,576 acres of protected woodland in the Morna area, close to the town of Sant Joan de Labritja, on 25 May 2011. Spain's highest court were confirming the acquittal in May 2014 by the Court of Palma, in rejecting the appeal of the Prosecutor who had asked for a sentence of 11 years in prison for defendant, bee-keeper Martin Candioti. The prosecution argued that the fire was caused by Candioti's gross negligence but the Supreme Court agreed with Palma in considering it a reckless but not culpable act, and therefore a non-criminal offence.

More Taxis for Santa Eulalia The City of Santa Eulalia has initiated procedures for the award of six new taxi licenses which the council explained as being "in response to the increasing demand for longer journeys out of the borough to Ibiza's other towns". They also pointed towards the increase in population in the municipality in recent years and increased tourist occupation during the summer season as posing a real increase in demand for taxi services. The council said it is their duty to issue sufficient new licences to ensure a quality response to demand.

Erwin Broner @ MACE Claire B The Erwin Broner exhibition continues at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACE) in Dalt Vila until March 15th. Broner was a German architect who lived in Ibiza in the 1960s and designed several houses and apartments on the island, mainly for friends. In 1960 he built a house in Sa Penya for himself and his wife Gisela to live in. After his death, the house was left to the city of Ibiza along with its furnishings, paintings, books, objects, letters, photographs and personal documents. All of the documentation associated with his architectural career was given to the Ibiza and Formentera branch of the Balearic Islands’ Architect Association. Casa Broner was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 2011 with the original furnishings designed by Broner himself on display. In the current exhibition, some of the artefacts from the archives are on display in both the Museum of Contemporary Art and in Casa Broner, including photos of Broner and his wife Gisela, many of which were taken in the house in Sa Penya. Also on display are plans and drawings of many of the 30 houses that Broner designed in Ibiza, as well as several of his paintings and drawings. We learn that Broner was not only

an architect, but also a painter, a musician and that he worked in the film industry as a set designer and on animation films, spending time in the USA, Paris, London and Barcelona as well as periods on and off the island of Ibiza, where he finally settled in 1959. If you’re interested in 60s architecture and design it’s worth going to see the exhibition at MACE, combining it with a visit to Casa Broner too if you haven’t already been there. Not only is it a fine example of 60s minimal architecture and design, but the location on the cliff edge of Sa Penya facing the sea is stunning. There’s always an assistant present on site, who is happy to show you around and tell you more about Broner and the house, and make sure that you go onto the roof terrace to take in the views. The exhibition brings to life the man who designed and lived in the house along with his wife, and gives fascinating insights into his life and career and a sense of what they experienced in Ibiza in the 60s. The exhibition is on until March 15th. Open Tuesday-Friday 10am to 4.30pm, SaturdaySunday 10am to 2pm. Always closed on Mondays. Both museums are free. More info at: http:// www.eivissa.es/mace

New York Fashion Week 2015 Welcome to another edition of Zips It Up, bought to you this week from Mallorca, Ibiza and London. Apologies to all reading this in Ibiza as I seem to have brought the British weather with me. It was a Spring Med shopping trip which proved rather unsuccessful, because at this time of the year so much is closed for renovation. Everyone’s favourite Spanish high street store Zara was a dead cert, and I browsed some of this season’s must-haves (priced more competitively than in the U K ) . Lightweight leather is back, as we go nostalgic and revamp the 70s with a 2015 twist. I bought a beautiful plum leather dress and soft white leather clutch containing this spring’s key detail – fringe tassels. Pure class and simplicity and not too warm for this time of the year in either London or Mallorca. Ibiza was all about faux fur and lightweight knitwear. I know you don’t automatically put faux fur and Spring in the same sentence but it’s in keeping with the 70s vibe. I picked up this gorgeous stripey number from one of my favourite shops on the island, Sluiz. Paired with a simple vest, fedora and shades, I was fit for all weather. It’s a quirky store stocking lots of independent designers and amazing accessories, jewellery and customised furniture. It’s that time of the year again – Fashion Week Season. I have tickets to some shows forLondon Fashion Week 2015 this weekend, which I’m really excited about. I’m not quite on the front row yet, but give me time. In this instalment of Zips It Up, we look at the weird and wacky catwalk looks at the current New York Fashion Week 2015, plus in the full online edition you can read about our discovery of the brand new online shopping haven that is Finery London and the ‘Topshop’ mastermind behind it.. We also explore how to wear this season’s key wardrobe staple – The Silver Skirt. Don’t be afraid! I’m wearing mine for the catwalk shows on Sunday. On top of all that, I’m off to see 50 Shades this Saturday night with the girls. We’re observing Jaimie Dornan from a leather armchair complete with dinner and cocktails at an exclusive 20 seater Cinema in London. More about that next week… so whip off your mask, untie those cuffs and sit back, relax and enjoy this week’s Amanda Zips It Up.

The Wierd & Wacky So Far

These outfits might be high fashion, but they would generate a few odd looks down your local. New York Fashion Week is in full flow and as designers unleash their creative juices, a few rather impractical outfits have strutted shamelessly onto the catwalk.

Surviving a Break Up

Metal masks, male crop tops and beard chainmail are among the more outlandish designs. Why are so many clothes at fashion shows so impractical? Surely no one will buy these bizarre creations? Making things for everyday wear is not really the point for many designers at the shows. It’s more about showing off creative flair than being constrained by practical concerns. What you see on the runway often represents an artistic idea, which can later be adapted for the High Street. In certain cases, with some difficulty. Designers want to make their clothes memorable and keep you entertained, so make-up and styling are always going to be much more theatrical than what you see when you pop down to your local Topshop.

Nick Gibbs Strangest Press this week has come from the people who are Spain's market leaders in the anti-cleavage wrinkle bra world. That is anti-wrinkling of the cleavage you understand, not that they are against the cleavage itself, and make a range of ruched lingerie. I like to consider myself an 'aware' male and though i think my age/generation will prevent me from ever crossing the threshold into a world where adverts for panty pads don't put me off my tea, I'd like to think I'm up on most things that would cross cosmo's problem page. This one is new to me though, a wrinkly cleavage is not something I've ever heard mention of, nor come across. Of course I wouldn't be looking for wrinkly cleavage, or cleavage of any sort for that matter, rough, smooth, sticky, hairy, it's all off my radar outside of my own bedroom, but we live in a beach culture and for sure I've never noticed a roped off corner of shame in Ocean Beach for girls with the cleave-weave. Apparently i will be excited (I'm not feeling it yet to be honest) to hear that they are entering the UK market and will so save countless women (high income age 20-40) the despair of cleavage wrinkle. Will the UK undies sector fight back? Will Ann Summers come up with a matching set wrinkle & tinkle, or will it be just a storm in a D-Cup (groan)

Waiting for the summer sun? Ego offer a range of salon tanning services including airbrush tan and UVA sunbeds. But we don’t just tan you, our range of specialist skincare products will keep you feeling as good as you look.

Antonio Urzi: Not an ideal outfit for a bus ride to work. Do not machine wash. Many of those attending New York Fashion Week will see as many as seven shows a day. Designers don’t want these influential figures to get bored. They are fashions shows the clue’s in the name. No label wants to be vanilla and forgettable, so they ramp up the drama. For all the theatrics, many of the clothes are beautiful and impactful.

Sophia V. You’re no longer in a relationship, feeling alone, vulnerable and unsure of what to do with yourself. The easiest thing to do may seem like gluing yourself to the couch, with a big tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream, watching re-runs of SATC, mourning over love lost. Or going out and drowning your sorrows. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with spending alone time, reminiscing, crying and letting it all out. It’s better for you than holding onto and building up negative emotions. However, if it’s been three months and you’re still glued to the couch, it’s time to take action. And quick! Don’t over analyse. Sitting there wondering about the how’s, whys and when’s will not make you feel any better. It didn’t work out. If you really cannot move on until you know for certain what went wrong, have a civilised conversation with your ex and ask them. If not, will knowing change anything? Probably not. If you were the dumper, write a list and remind yourself why you ended the relationship. Don’t feel guilty or beat yourself up over it. You weren’t happy and you took the necessary action for the both of you. If you were dumped, then get rid of all reminders of the relationship, if they bring back painful memories. You don’t necessarily have to throw things out. Gifts, photographs, etc., store them in a box until you’re ready. Delete the photographs in your mobile, voicemails, messages, anything to stop you dwelling on the past. Pamper yourself. Whether it’s nice hot bubble baths, painting your nails each day, changing your hair colour, going on a shopping splurge - get your confidence back! And see more of your friends. If you’re a man, then update your wardrobe, take up a hobby, take up social invites, and keep your mind occupied. Enjoy your single status whilst you can. Do things that you weren’t able to do when you had a partner, and had to accommodate to their needs. Now is a time when you can be selfish. Put ‘you’ first. Rebounds – they work for some, boosting their self esteem, and making them forget the break-up, whereas others, it can leave them feel even more unwanted and depressed. Think carefully before you rush into anything. Also if you feel like getting back with your partner, as tempting as it may seem, remind yourself why you broke up in the first place. You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one. Don’t be afraid to move on. Make a plan of action for the future, book a night out, a holiday, something to look forward to. And remember, time is the greatest healer of all.

https://www.facebook.com/ibizarockshouse The following Friday March 6th Pike’s sees the return of Lo Cura for their winter closing party.

Pacha Return 4 Solomun + 1 Nick Gibbs Solomun Sundays at Pacha are confirmed for 2015 from May 24th To October 4th. This will be the 3rd season for what has proved a very successful night with the + 1 concept set to continue this year. For the last 2 years the Solo-man (do you see what I did there) has become the duo man ending the night with special guest back-to-back sessions. It seems that this mister A-lister prefers to party in numbers, there is no Solo-fun (good god I did it again) and his trademark up front and personal DJ booth will be right down on the Pacha dancefloor again. Mladen has been busy during winter too, that’s right he’s not Solo-sun (OK I’ll stop now) playing the superstar DJ circuit worldwide and headlining some of the biggest festivals such as BPM and Tomorrowland. This year he kicks off his Ibiza season playing at the IMS in May before starting his 20 dates at Pacha which are sure to include some real special, special guests. For more info:

The one and only Flower Power returns to Pacha in 2015 for a total of 17 parties every Tuesday from June 2nd to September 22nd. We always love an FP press release, this year’s mood setter spewed forth adjectives with wild abandon, “Passion, innovation, amusement, rebelliousness, intellectuality, utopia, youth, experimentation, colour, creativity. a renewed meaning of the golden sixties, for the real lovers of the island of the music and the freedom” and there’s more “with a non-conformist ideology, the love to the island of the god Bes, its eloquent musical background and awe inspiring cultural background to discover and remember whom, how, when and why of this eternal music that moves our feet every Tuesday in Pacha.” A great night, despite the dodgy press:-)

Gallery; Tamas Lansburgen This week’s spectacular cover image is by the kind permission of Ibizan photographer Tamas Lansburgen. Nothing says Ibiza at this time of year like Almond Blossom does, but despite seeing many very good photos of our native spring bloom, I really do think Tamas has raised the bar with his picture. Composition, colour-way, depth, beauty, it ticks all the boxes and I just hope the newspaper printing process will do it justice. In thanking Tamas I asked what contact details we should show by way of credit and asked if he would like to give some details of his commercial photography - least we can do. He invited me to select any photo from his gallery and having had a look today I can assure you this Almond photo is not a one shot wonder. A very difficult job deciding what to select, so I opted for one or two more commercial images. Artist he may be, but we all have to eat. Here is some background… “Tamás lives and works on Ibiza since 2002. He is published world wide, magazines like Vogue and Elle featured his photographs, and Nikon and Canon have honoured him with prestigious awards. His background in painting and sculpturing have given him an eye for detail that is easily recognized when looking at his photographs. Tamás has experienced that the natural light on Ibiza is of a special quality and he has found a way to bring this to life in his enchanting images.”

El Naranjo is one of 14 restaurants participating in Gastro Thursdays

of restaurants offer 50% discount on many of their products. The promotion started on January 8th and will end on April 30th – excluding 19th March and 2nd April. There are fourteen restaurants participating this year, in Santa Eulalia: El Bacaro, Panda, Q-Bar, Okinawa, Creperia “La Vie en Rose”, Rincón de Pepe, La Rambla, Es Faralló, El Naranjo, X-tú, Royalty, and Juanito, and two in Sant Carles: Bananas and Peralta. Apart from a good meal at a great price, your payment receipts from any of the restaurants listed entitles you to a 50% discount at Santa Eularia cinema. As if that wasn’t enough you can also request a 2h free parking card. Always a popular event, and it is not difficult to see why!

‘Sabors del camp i de la mar' - Ibiza Town Nick Gibbs The Consell d'Eivissa will hold the first 'Sabors del camp i de la mar' at the weekend. Running from February 28th to March 1st the event, which translates as Flavours of the Countryside and Sea, will be held at Ibiza Town’s fairgrounds. The initiative is part of the Balearic Day programme, and aims to promote agricultural and fishery products of the island and its local gastronomy. The fair will feature an area of show-cooking where visitors can learn how to prepare traditional and innovative dishes by great chefs. Visitors can also learn to make farm cheese with ‘formatjar’ herbs, and then also how to use it in making flaó.

Pintxos - San Antonio Nick Gibbs A total of 46 restaurants and bars in San Antonio are participating in this year’s Pintxa. The event, now in its 7th year, runs every Thursday from February 26 until April 2. It has certainly fulfilled the brief of promoting “local food and the bars and restaurants of the town" as quoted by the organisers.

Pintxos 2014 winner by Entice. "Ibicenco Basket With Apple, Raisins And Apple Chutney, Wild Asparagus, Mosaic Apple Jelly And Foam Panceta". Below; let the train take the strain if all those cañas start to take their toll.

Mercedes Menu Deluxe - San Antonio There is still one more marvellous menu we have to mention as a wonderful winter way to cure your culinary cravings, the always remarkable Villa Mercedes Menu deluxe, and the wonderful thing isit isn’t even part of an organised promotion, you can get it for much of the year - in fact given you will be far too busy to go there when it isn’t available you may as well say it is available all year. One of our finest resident perks. The collage below shows the current menu - so how much would you pay for 3 courses, in somewhere as good as Villa Mercedes? Not much of a quiz is it when you can see the price printed just to the right, but that’s the thing, you will keep asking yourself ‘how much?’ Mercedes is the perfect place when you want to do something special, but go home with some money left in your pocket, and who doesn’t like doing that? See ad for info.

Pinxtos attracts people into San An from throughout the island, even the otherwise sacred fixtures of the Ibizan pool league have been known to take a break to allow the players to join the rest of the island and benefit from the rivalry that has grown among the bars in trying to outdo each other to win the public vote for the best bite-sized taste sensation which, along with a beer or wine, can be yours for just 2€. The modest price and volume encourages everybody to move along the route, and that is the general idea with many not happy until every one of the 46 establishments has been ticked off their list. Eventually all those cañas are bound to start taking their toll, but fear not as between the hours of 8 and 11pm the San Antonio tourist train will be running the circuit. Don’t miss Brit bar Entice, last year’s winner (see above) and Villa Mercedes. I know what you are thinking, we would say that - well yes we would but even so Villa Mercedes is always one of the gems and just look at their DJ line up for this year. On the website you can download various routes including a specific vegetarian route, and a sweet tooth desert route. Or you can just stagger off into San An’s back streets and see where you end up - it’s all good. http://www.pintxasantantoni.com/

Community ... Letter From Juan As I write this letter on Monday I have only six more days “on the wagon”. I survived a trip to Palma, including four occasions when I would have normally had several glasses of wine. I still can’t say I feel any better although the morning headaches that I got on waking when I first started have gone, but other than that the only benefit is that I have appeared to have some excess round my stomach as my trousers fit better and I have had to go up a notch on my belt, but no real loss of weight, perhaps a couple of kilos. It certainly isn’t as bad as stopping smoking but as a person who is not a foodie but where food is something you have to eat to stay alive, I must admit that a meal does not feel complete without the best part of it – a glass of wine or two! If only I could think of a substitute, I have tried tomato juice with a lot of pepper and Lea & Perrins, tonic water, non alcoholic beer -

not bad, and non alcoholic wine not so good. There must be something out there to drink other than water which does tend to get a little tedious after the fourth glass. Let’s change the subject and have a few moans and a bit of nit picking. Planes why are they still building them with no smoking signs when everybody knows you cannot smoke on a plane and they announce it at least twice during the flight? Do you even remember what it was like when people could smoke on a plane? Like sitting in a very smelly fog! Apparently, the ban started in the USA in1988 and was worldwide in the end of 1990’s. Whilst I am on the subject of planes, why do some people who are sitting at the back insist of depositing their hand luggage in a locker at the front? Don’t they think that people sitting at front have hand luggage? Finally, on the subject of planes I presume you read the notice the other week about the new proposed cheap flights to Palma. You may well be rejoicing but what about those poor husbands whose wives see this an opportunity to nip over to Palma for the day and hit the shops and the outlet stores? I

had better sign off before I am in trouble for putting more silly ideas into people’s heads. Have a good week and enjoy the light evenings, not long now until the clock goes forward - 29th March. Yours, Juan.

View from the Pew Messy Church will be meeting on Sunday the 1st of March at 4pm in the Social Centre of San Rafael (across from the petrol station). This is Church geared to the young and young at heart! It gives those attending a chance to “get messy” in a creative way, with a freedom not found in one’s own home… due to protective restrictions by most guardians. The theme will be `Spring and New Creation´! What better backdrop to the theme than our local landscape, marked by God’s extravagant fingerprints. Recently born lambs ambling about with umbilical cords still dangling, almond trees shimmering with blossoms, the first poppies popping up, caterpillars shedding

their winter gear for something lighter and brighter... And yes, the days are cooperating by pushing back the early night curfew. OK lizards and geckos, you can emerge from your long winter siesta in time to rockbathe in the glorious sunlight. Ibiza, the White Island, is known for its special exquisite light. So Is Jesus! “I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life.” John 8.12 Come and join us! Along with the artistic messiness that painting, pasting, colouring and cutting involves, the get-together also includes a brief talk on the theme - and of course there will be some lively songs, plus a light meal of soup, sandwiches, `healthful´ cake or fruit. The creative masterpieces produced by the children are displayed in “adult church” the following Sunday. “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of God.” Matt. 18:3 For more info on Messy Church call: Rosi – 619523053 Next Services: Sunday March 1st: San Rafael Church at 9:30am - BCP Communion. San Rafael at 11am - Service of the Word with Praise and Worship. San Rafael Social Club at 4pm - Messy Church.

It’s Good to Talk Kate Stillman

Dear Kate I am experiencing huge feelings of guilt towards my children. I have a history of depression and mood swings I think due to an excessive life style and generally having no boundaries. They have seen behaviour of mine that I regret and I am worried that this will have a long lasting effect on them. The guilt makes me try to make up for things in a way which I know is probably not best for them, I spoil them and my ability to set limits of acceptable behaviours is questionable

resulting in them sometimes being hard to manage. I don’t blame them in the slightest, I am the parent and I should have done better by them, my question is how to I manage my guilt so it isn’t detrimental to them?

Regards, JT. Dear JT Thank you for your letter and I am sorry to hear you are feeling the way you are. Most parents at some point have an element of guilt as regards their children and for a variety of reasons. To a degree this is healthy and I would worry more if you were to say you had it all worked out and are a fantastic parent. However, the difficulty arises when the feelings of guilt grow to such a degree that it impacts our way of parenting. Ie: You possibly try to make up for your guilt by spoiling them, which in the long term is only doing them a disservice. Guilt is often used to punish ourselves for things that may have happened in the past, I suppose the question to ask yourself is “is this self punishment actually a self punishment or is it harming others more?” If the answer is that it is hurting others more then your guilt is misplaced as it is harming others more than it is punishing you, and even if it were to be punishing you, what good does that do? You need to learn from mistakes not sit with a guilt that makes you feel stuck. Take time to reflect on how the guilt is displaying itself and process if it is beneficial to hold the guilt or to try and move forward in a different way. A way that shows your children who you are now rather than trying to make up for the person you were. There will always be some wounds from the past, but its how you manage those wounds to build a relationship in the future that really matters.

Take care, Kate. For contact details see Kate’s advert in local services. NB: A reminder that our two new groups start this Tuesday 3rd March, 10am the women’s psychotherapy group (10€) and 1pm the open support group for anyone who would like to join (free). Info via kate@ibizacounselling.com

Mind, Body & Soul ...

Meditation Made Easy Sabina Brownstein There is a simple daily practice that can reduce stress, increase mental clarity and get you on the path to true peace and happiness… and all in just five minutes. That is the magic of meditation. However, many people are discouraged from meditating because they feel it is too complicated and time consuming. It is true that there are forms of meditation with rigid rules about how to sit, what to think, etc., but meditation can also be simple, easy, and joyful. I recommend that you start by meditating for just five minutes each day, and do it first thing in the morning – before you turn on your phone – before you turn on your mind with all its thoughts about the day to come. Find a quiet space where you will not be disturbed and then sit comfortably. It is not necessary to sit cross-legged or in any other special way - just make sure that your spine is straight, and you can use cushions to help you do that. Now that you are comfortable the next step is to close your eyes and concentrate on your breath. Watch your abdomen as it gently expands when you breathe in, and gently contracts as you breathe out…. expanding to allow air into the lungs… contracting to ease the air out. Your breathing is always smooth and natural – never forced. As you begin to relax thoughts will come into your mind and they will try to get your attention… that is normal, and at some point you may find that you have been captured by your thoughts. When this happens don’t get frustrated or feel that you have meditated badly… there is no such thing as a bad meditation. The act of watching your thoughts and becoming aware of when they take you over is the very essence of meditation. So when this happens (and it will), just smile at the endless persistence of your ego, and gently bring your awareness back to the rhythm of your breathing… the thoughts will still be there… but you will not be giving them your attention. A simple and practical way to enhance even a very short meditation is called the ‘Smiling Meditation’, and here’s how it works: Feel the peaceful rhythm of your breath… allow it to relax the tension in your face… and let a smile come to your lips. On each out-breath visualize the beautiful energy of your smile as it flows throughout your inner body. “Breathing in I calm my body… Breathing out I Smile. Dwelling in the present moment… I know this is a wonderful moment.” There are numerous scientific studies that have proven

the benefits of regular meditation. Every time that you switch off and tune in to your inner self you are not only finding peace, you are also doing your physical body a great favour. In addition to stress reduction, meditation can boost your immunity, lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation. Recent studies at Harvard University have shown that regular meditation can even slow the

aging process and improve memory. According to professor Sara Lazar, "Cognition seems to be preserved in meditators," and she adds that “they also have more grey matter – literally, more brain cells.” If you have any related questions please get in touch with me via my email below, or see my advert in local services. sabina44ibiza@gmail.com

Drug Resistance Kevin Russell Many of the biggest threats to public health come from microorganisms: bacteria and viruses being the most common culprits. They cause millions of deaths every year worldwide but as scientists strive to find newer and more potent antibiotic and antiviral treatments the microbes themselves are changing and evolving. It has been estimated that drug resistance to these treatments is currently linked to 700,000 deaths and this is on the rise. Drug resistance occurs when an established medicine (normally an antibiotic) is no longer effective in treating the original disease. Organisms can also become resistant to different treatments giving rise to multidrug-resistant organisms. Most drugs are designed to target specific weaknesses in the microbe, so any mutation in the organism makes the drug ineffective. The most common examples of this can be seen in tuberculosis, staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), malaria and streptococcus. Superbugs is a term often used to describe evolving more difficult to treat microorganisms. Ebola remains in the spotlight but it isn’t killing as many people as drug resistant malaria in the same regions of West Africa. Drug resistance is basically a result of evolution on a microorganism level. Other factors contributing to the increase in drug resistance is the poor adherence to prescribed regimes. This can be through choice if a person doesn’t finish a course of antibiotics or through economic circumstances. This arises when someone starts a treatment and not having the money to finish the course or as in the cases of Tuberculosis in many prisons, inmates taking medication as and when they can buy them allowing the tuberculosis time to evolve and become resistant to the original medicine.

Some cancerous cells can also become resistant to chemotherapy drugs rendering them useless, effectively creating stronger cancer, more difficult to treat. The cost of drug resistance cannot be underestimated; lives lost, increased hospital admissions, further drug research at increased costs to tax payers, lost economy due to increased sick days, more morbidity and side effects and the chances of spreading diseases without cure. Drug resistance may also influence how and when programmed operations are performed. Many simple operations such as knee or hip transplants or caesarean sections need antibiotic therapy afterwards to prevent infection. If drug resistant bacteria become more prevalent these operations will become more dangerous and will have more complications. There is also debate upon effective use of antibiotics in agriculture. Half of the antibiotics produced in the USA are used in agricultural feeds, food that later people (or other animals) are consuming. It is not known how this transfers to the food chain and the human population but it is a possible threat. If you are given a course of antibiotics this winter please finish the course even if you start t feel better, you might be brewing a superbug. If you want me to discuss any health related issue please get in touch via my email below or see my advert. kevin1370@yahoo.com

ARIES – Justice. Get to grips with health matters and decide on a diet that suits you. You’ll feel more balanced about situations that have left you feeling sensitive and out of kilter recently; a sense of harmony is restored. Any Aries’ who write for a living, it’s time to use your mind/imagination and begin a project which will improve your bank balance. TAURUS – Nine of Swords This week start the process of conquering your fears by not letting them get the better of you. Swords represent our thoughts, so much of what you fear is created in your mind and may Never happen. Don’t allow negative thought patterns to dominate your life, as there is nothing to fear, but fear itself. Keep your thoughts positive. GEMINI – Five of Pentacles If you’re concerned about money, help arrives in the form of an unexpected gift or rebate. This card represents the Cavalry, coming to your financial aid in the nick of time. If you’ve been generous to others in the past, it’s your time to be rewarded. As always, your own attitude counts; what you give in life, you get back. CANCER – Seven of Cups All becomes clear regarding a situation that's bothered you for a while - providing much needed insight. You may have been strung along, but it suited you at the time, plus you’ve had your own reasons for going with a particular scenario. Boredom could set in this week making you want to cut loose and chase some real happiness. LEO – The Tower There is, somewhere in your life, a false ideal or belief that requires dismantling. This needs great courage on your part as it will have ramifications in all your relationships, work and play. If you don't begin this process, events can be taken out of your hands. The result will be the same, radical change. This is an amazing opportunity. VIRGO – Six of Cups People from your past turn up or contact you out of the blue indicating happy reunions and also a reconnection of feelings where they're concerned. This card indicates pleasure on a deep and nurturing level and as a result, you’ll enjoy life more than usual. Any recent disappointments fade away this week and you’re more than happy to help others. LIBRA – Knight of Cups A peace offering is graciously accepted as you feel that it's time to bury a hatchet. Show how honest, understanding and caring you are and others will respond positively by meeting you half way. Acknowledging that situations could have been handled better in the past is a sign of wisdom. Romantically for some, this Knight brings a new admirer! SCORPIO – The World Again this week you’re free to develop new opportunities as they continue to flow your way. Having learnt from past mistakes, you don’t intend to repeat them. Don’t worry how your plans will materialise, just trust they will and be ready to act. You’re begun a new cycle in life, one that promises to enrich it on many levels. SAGITTARIUS – Four of Wands (reversed) If you feel let down or disappointed that a situation you hoped for didn’t materialise; just remember that everything happens for a reason. Maybe the timing wasn’t right, or the people involved were unable to commit, or would eventually prove unreliable. Pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start all over again! Social plans could be cancelled or prove disappointing. CAPRICORN – Two of Pentacles Like ocean tides, the ebb and flow of our finances can be influenced by lunar energy. Therefore, I suggest you curb any unnecessary outlay until after the full moon on the 5th of March. Capricorns are sensible when it comes to money but when they spend, they like quality, which comes at a price. Unforeseen expenses could crop up. AQUARIUS – King of Swords This week, an interesting and dynamic individual could sweep you off your feet and if its romance, it hits you like a tornado! For ambitious Aquarians, career success and a particular life goal is within your reach. However, you must remain passionate and focused on your dream. You love telling people how to do things, but don’t be too forceful. PISCES – The Hermit This card indicates that it's time to release any emotional trauma from your past and to get on with healing yourself; through mind, body and soul. Meditation, Tai Chi swimming and yoga will all help this process, so listen to what your body needs. It’s important that you have some ‘me’ time as part of a much needed nurturing process.

San Antonio Carly Sorensen This Saturday saw the re-scheduled San Antonio carnival take place. The dull, blustery rainy day left many wondering if another postponement was on the cards, but it went ahead as scheduled. Despite the freezing wind and overcast skies, hundreds of smiling people lined the streets, many in costume themselves. As always, the atmosphere was bright and happy and crowds enthusiastically cheered on the entrants. Unfortunately, there were notably fewer entrants than in previous years, no doubt due to the re-scheduling and the questionable weather. I particularly missed the usually professional looking and perfectly choreographed floats from the big dance studios such as banana and capricorn. However, the participants who did take part were full of colour, energy and smiles and were very original. The schools must work so hard preparing their entries, as they were truly outstanding. There were dancing pirates, jumping cheerleaders and American footballers, marching superheroes, singing Frozen characters and waving mice and cheese. My favourite school entry was Can Bonet's Mexican theme, featuring guitarists, sombrero and moustache bedecked kids, a saloon on wheels with card playing ladies, a maypole with girls dancing around and more maracas than you could shake a stick at! If my ten year old Can Bonet attending English students are to be believed - and I'd say they're as reliable a source as any - "We came second, the superheroes" (I'm unsure which school they were, but their entry was a float carrying teachers dressed as villains, followed by groups of kids, staff and parents dressed as Green Lanterns, Incredibles, Batmen and Supermen) won and the Can Coix Pirates came third." The best entry by far though, in my opinion, was called 'taxi disco piratas'. I'm not sure whose brainchild it was, but that person or group deserve a big pat on the back as it made all the adults laugh. The entry was clearly a satire on summer and featured cardboard cars emblazoned with 'f**k me I'm in a Zoo' alongside kids dressed as zoo ready Clubbers (and one kid as a DJ, wearing a mixing desk made from a huge cardboard box), chased by cardboard policia - who, in a lovely comic twist, often went the wrong way and 'lost' the pirate taxi's - and finished off with a neon clad middle aged bloke with a beer belly staggering around with a drink in his hand. The pirate taxis even approached the spectators offering lifts for 50â‚Ź. Brilliant.

Carnival ...

San Antonio Carnival. Credit Carly Sorensen

Santa Eulalia Carnival Nicole Torres The Show must go on! Although the rain made an appearance in the morning, the sun finally came out in afternoon in Santa Eulalia and we could celebrate the Carnival parade, which was not able to go ahead on the previous Tuesday as had been planned due to the bad weather. Finally, 15 registered (six categories of individuals and groups, and other extras in school and adult dance clubs) participated in one of the shows with more public that we remember in previous years. Although there were 22 registered, finally 700 people took part in the festival, for the eyes of the many children in costume that filled the pavements. The jury, consisting of members of the media and the arts world, from its privileged position at the Teatro Espanya especially valued the originality of costumes, dancing and entertainment and, above all, the work done to shine on the Parade. As expected, while waiting for the verdict and after the results were read, the Plaza Espanya had live music, as did most of the night with Rock'n'Bars Powered by True PitiĂźses Flower Association which made Saturday in Santa Eulalia a very fun and musical evening.

Zealand in the 3rd and final T20. All to play for here as England won the first match by 8 wickets but the Kiwis came back to win on Friday by 6 wickets.

Rugby League A serious whitewash by the Australian clubs over their English counterparts in the opening matches of the current World Club Championship, now underway in t'north of England, as Warrington lost to St George 18-12, Wigan lost to Brisbane Broncos 14-12 and St Helens were surprisingly thumped 39-0 by Gladiator, Robin Hood and Noah film star Russell Crowe's South Sydney Rabbitohs. Let's just hope the English clubs can gain some revenge and pride in the next rounds!

Rugby Union The 6 Nations resumes this w/ end with England in Ireland for a potential Championship decider. It was back to the Premiership in the break and top match was the top of the table clash between Bath and Northampton at the Rec, and tho’ Bath were unbeaten at home in the League in 12 months, took the lead the Saints marched back to win 2113, extending their lead to 7 points. Elsewhere, Exeter beat Harlequins 32-21, Sale, at home, surprisingly beat Saracens 1410, Gloucester beat bottom team London Welsh 48-10 & Leicester beat London Irish 12-6.

First up last week were some of the first knock-out rounds of both the Champions and Europa Leagues. In the former, Chelsea were in Paris and although they appear to have the slight advantage of an away goal in a 1-1 draw against Paris St Germain, the match was overshadowed by a group of so-called “Chelsea” fans who didn't do themselves any favours with their racist actions on the Paris Metro. Who are these people and where are they from because they certainly are not real football fans and, as you have probably realised by now (altho' I do try to be impartial!) as a died-in-the-wool Blues fan, although I have every sympathy for the French gentleman who was treated so badly by

them, surely this is a society problem rather, or maybe as well as a football problem. Anyway, moving on, both Arsenal and Man City play their ties this week, the Gunners against Mnsr Wenger's old club Monaco and City with a daunting but not unassailable task at a demoralised Barcelona (see below). It wasn't too bad a week for the British clubs in the Europa, as Everton thrashed Young Boys 41, Liverpool beat Besiktas 1-0, Tottenham drew 1-1 against Fiorentina, and Celtic drew 3-3 with all the second legs being played later this week. Talking of Spurs, real shame for them that they have to play again on Thursday, especially in Italy, as they will only have a 2 day respite before they take on Chelsea in the Final of the League Cup on Sunday at Wembley. On the domestic front, Chelsea's lead of 7 points was pegged back to 5 as they could only draw 1-1 with Burnley at the Bridge, altho' I just wish the refs would show a degree of consistency, not just here but at all the Leagues grounds, as 4 events occurred that set Jose's teeth grinding two nailed on penalties that weren't given as well as a “should have been” and a “shouldn't have been” red card. Nuff said! Meanwhile, City welcomed back their mainstay Yaya Toure from the African Nations Cup and immediately saw a dividend as he starred in a 5-0 demolition of, dare I say it, a pathetic Newcastle Utd side. Arsenal climbed in to 3rd spot with a nervy 2-1 win at Crystal Palace, Man Utd dropped to 4th, as they lost 2-1 at Swansea, Southampton stayed in 5th despite being beaten at home 2-0 by Liverpool who swapped places with Tottenham who drew 2-2 at home to West Ham with a 96th minute penalty and all I'll say is that I totally agree with Big Sam that if that was a penalty, based

on the non-penalties at the Bridge, then I'm an Eskimo! Down at the bottom, Leicester looked on course for a much needed but surprising 3 points at Everton but succumbed to a late goal to draw 2-2, ditto new manager Tim Sherwood as Aston Villa led Stoke but went down 21 to stay in the bottom 3, QPR, after their first 3 away points of the season last week, reverted to type and lost 2-1 at Hull and finally, yet another dour scoreless draw at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland, now with half of their 26 games being drawn, were held by West Bromwich Albion. Surprises in the Championship as pacesetters Bournemouth and Middlesboro' both lost, at Brentford, and home to Leeds respectively, so it’s advantage Derby who now lead by 2 points after a 3-2 win at home to Wednesday. As for Our Ed's team, Ipswich, they unfortunately and quite surprisingly really, lost 1-0 at home to Reading. Also a surprise in La Liga, where Barça lost at home 1-0 to Malaga and to compound their loss, leaders Real Madrid went to Elche and won 2-0 to open up the gap to 4 points and Atlético, in 3rd, won 3-0 at home to Almería to pull within 3 points.

Golf Congrats to ever popular Brit Darren Clarke, hero of many a Ryder Cup victory over the US of A, as the 5 man Cup committee announced that he would be Captain of the European team for next year's event, being held at Hazeltine, USA. Altho' Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, himself a Ryder Cup veteran and still playing on the European Tour at the venerable age of 50, was also in the running, Clarke's experience and Ryder Cup know-how won him the day. 'Tis all I have time for this week so enjoy the Spring time here in Ibiza and let's hope it lasts!

We start down under in the current World Cup, where the Group matches are taking place. For those of you who are not aware of the format, there are two Groups, A and B, consisting of 8 international teams in each group, and they play each other with the top 4 from each group qualifying for the Quarter Finals. So far, in A, England have played 3, won 1 and lost 2, their sole victory coming this morning against Scotland, by 100+ runs and led by a superb century by Moeen Ali. Having already lost heavily to both Australia and New Zealand, they now need to really beat Sri Lanka, next up on Saturday, then Bangladesh and Afghanistan to have any hope of qualifying, with, I would imagine, the Aussies, the Kiwis and Sri Lanka. In Group B, it's looking good for India, p2 won 2, as leaders, but South Africa, Pakistan and West Indies have to get their act together and sharpish to qualify with the dark horses being Ireland in the wings, who have already beaten the Windies. Still on cricket and congrats to England Women's skipper Charlotte Edwards as she will captain her side for the 200th time on Tuesday as England take on hosts New (Continued on page 15)
