Poverty in Paradise..

The Balearic Government has announced that it will allocate one million euros to help families with children living in poverty but is this tackling the issue or pre-election flannel? We show how much the grant is worth when it reaches individual

Town Halls, and in a special report we look at Ibiza’s poverty problem through the eyes of those that know, the charities working at the coal face with the people Ibiza’s prosperity left behind. Also news of the new Food for

Ibiza group and a Hungry for Hunger fundraising effort. Most importantly we ask each of the charities whether the issue of poverty is getting better or worse. See the results on Page 2 and 3.

250,000€ from Consell and Sta Eulalia for Restoration of Es Puig de Missa

The Consell Insular d'Eivissa and the Town Hall of Santa Eulalia des Riu have agreed to donate to the Bishopric of Pitiüses a total of 250,000 euros, to be invested in the restoration and improvement of the parsonage and the historical buildings of Es Puig de Missa. The Consell have ffunded 150,000 euros and the Consistory another 100,000 euros, which will help fund the restoration project presented by the diocese, which has a total budget of 352,541.94 euros. The remaining 102,541.94 euros will be provided by the Church.

Purple Rain

The fountains in the centre of Avenida de Isidor Macabich of Ibiza Town turned Lilac overnight Saturday, much to the surprise of neighbours Sunday morning. Water company Aqualia later admitted responsibility. They dyed the waters purple to mark international Women's Day - though we are none the wiser as to what the connection is.

Enrique Mayans (Ibiza, 1935-2015), The first Socialist mayor of Ibiza Town following the fall of Franco’s dictatorship, died last Friday.

Island pays tribute to Enrique Mayans, “Ibiza’s first Socialist”

Politicians of all colours, including both conservative PP president of the Consell, Vicent Serra, and the Mayor of Ibiza Town, Virginia Marí, walked in the wake of the late Enrique Mayans, Ibiza’s first socialist mayor in the recovered democracy following Franco’s fall. Former colleagues of the Red Cross and the Blood Bank, both of which he devoted so many years and efforts in his life, were also present. Prominent figures from the world of business, unions, politics and culture were all in attendance to pay their last respects to a person unanimously considered one of the most important and highly respected figures in island politics. Mayans was a political reference characterized by his integrity and honesty. He became a key figure in the seventies and eighties and also developed an important social and altruistic work: he was one of the most prominent activists of the Blood Bank of the Red Cross (which he directed for 33 years) and helped found PIMEEF. Mayans’ last public appearance was in the Club Diario de Ibiza on October 23rd 2014, when he attended a tribute and retrospective to his life and work organised by his socialist colleagues to publicly acknowledge his career.

Official statistics do nothing to relieve the gloomy picture. Throughout the Baleares, social exclusion is on the increase. 27,8% of the population are classed as being so poor they could face social exclusion. This equates to 306,000 people or 115,000 homes of which 130,000 people are in a situation of ex-

treme risk. It is estimated that 4 out of every 10 people who at present are managing to maintain a minimum standard of living could fall into a state of poverty if the economic situation does not improve quickly. A good education helps as 7 out of every 10 university graduates have jobs on the islands, whilst only 4 out of every 10 of those with only secondary school education are employed. In all

cases the quality of the employment is questionable with lots of temporary contracts and workers being over qualified for the job they are doing. Irregular work increases the risk of social exclusion by 75% and it is the under 30’s who are most likely to be employed in this category of job on the islands. Finally, statistics have revealed that 30% of the population is not participating in any political or social aspects of life here in the Baleares - a disenfranchisement level 3 times higher than the figure for the whole of Spain.

Meet Baby Dragus, The First Baby Born in the New Can Misses

The first baby born in the new hospital is called Dragus Nicolae Petru, the son of parents from Romania, and came into the world on Monday at 6.25pm. Dragus weighed 2,920 kilos and measured 47 centimeters. A striking coincidence: the midwife who attended the first delivery of the new hospital, Carmen Vidal, was also the attendant in the first birth of the old hospital. A veteran! On Monday Can Misses practically concluded the transfer to the new building, which began last July. The exception is the Maxillofacial Surgery unit, which must wait out the installation of special chairs. Aside from that all health care will be provided in the new facility. The transfer of the ICU, ER and operating theatres began Monday at 8a.m. and ended late in the afternoon.

Late in 2014 the Caritas charity said “the socio-economic differences which exist in Ibiza are incredible, highlighted by the affluence of the tourists seen in summer and the poverty of some residents.” In the last year Caritas has:helped over 3.500 residents, an increase of 200 on 2013. 350 of those are children under 8 years old. The charity has provided 28.000 meals, distributed 131 tons of food in 10.000 portions and recycled 357 tons of clothing. Whilst getting some state and EU subsidies, Caritas said that individual donations were their life blood. If you wish to contribute to this worthy and direct action cause, the account for donations is ES60 2100 0056 15 0201160964. Caritas has five shops on the island, staffed by volunteers, that give clothes free to the poor, or at low cost members of the public. Clot: c/ Josep Llobet Riquer 16, 07800, Ibiza. Red Cross Report Increase in Poor & Homeless.

The local Red Cross branch in Ibiza reported an increase in the help they are giving to homeless and poor on Ibiza and Formentera. At present the Red Cross help 150 homeless people and around 180 families. In the case of the homeless, most are squatting and 60% are mainly male of between 40 and 55 years of age from the mainland of Spain who have come here to find work and can no longer return to their home towns for various reasons. The homeless are often reluctant to accept help but, because of the skill of the Red Cross volunteers, they gradually begin to receive what they need to improve the situation they are in. In the case of the families that are being helped, on average they are couples with 3 or 4 children who have incomes of less than 500€ to survive on each month. The Red Cross on the island operates a budget of 1.300.000€ each year and has 1.700 donors as well as 300 active volunteers. The Red Cross are grateful for any help the Ibizan readers can give in any way or form. They cited the example of an anonymous donor who every week leaves 6 litres of milk outside the Red Cross building for the association to distribute.

No Way José, He Does It Again!

A resident of Ibiza Town has earned a salary of 2,000 euros a month for 10 years in the Weekend ONCE Lottery draw on Sunday March 8th. The disabled selling agent José Serra Marí seems to have a rather lucky touch - since he started selling tickets in September 2011 his customers have won a total of 240,000 euros from his stall on Calle Obispo Abad and Lasierra No. 42. That equates to 5,714€ per month! Where is his stall again?

Gerret Fair in Santa Eulalia Nicole Torres Not so many years ago the claim 'Gerret d'artet!', accompanied by the sound of ‘brulada de corn’ came to town announcing that the chariot pulled by a horse or a donkey distributed this fish

throughout the island. On Saturday, the firs Fira of Gerret wanted to recover this lost tradition and bring residents and tourists the benefits of a fish that is caught on the Pitiusan coast in a traditional and sustainable way. The fist Fira des Gerret in Santa

Eulalia was visited by hundreds of people. The objective of this initiative organized by the fishermen's associations of Ibiza, Santa Eulalia and Sant Antoni, with the assistance of the Town Hall and the participation of the Consell de Ibiza, is to promote awareness

and consumption of this fish, which has a strong presence in traditional Ibizan cuisine. A total of 30 exhibitors occupied the Sant Jaume Street. Most belonging to restaurants that offered different ways of preparing Gerret, from the more traditional,

marinating, to more innovative recipes. The brotherhoods and the Consell also had information booths, as did organizations like Mans Unides, Club Náutico Santa Eulalia, the Xarc institute or association of athletes with disabilities ADIFF. At 10:30am 'Deseo' arrived, one of the two llaüts of the brotherhood of Ibiza-Santa Eulalia Fishing the Gerret, with its load, 27 boxes with ten kilos each. About fifty people waiting at the port to see how the goods are carried in a cart pulled by a mule preceded by Sonadors and brulador cons. This fishing and that of the previous day (over 500 kilos) is what was offered to the visitors of the fair. Consell technicians offered a talk on the biology of Gerret and its fishing. In addition, throughout the day there were scheduled live music and other activities such as storytelling and workshops for children. There was also a contest of pickled Gerret. After the turnout, I don’t think this first fair will be the last!

St Patrick’s Day, Tuesday 17th March Father Jacks Claire B St Patrick’s Day is next Tuesday, March 17th and Father Jacks Irish Bar in Ses Figueretes will be putting on a party to rival Irish bars the world over, on what is their busiest day of the year. Starting at noon, the party will continue until 3am in the morning, with live entertainment in the evening. At the time of going to press, the exact details weren’t available, but last year’s ‘Paddyaoke’ (karaoke to traditional Irish songs) went down a storm, and is sure to make a reappearance this year. Irish stew will be served and of course there’s draught Guinness, a selection of Irish whiskey’s including Jameson, Paddy and Bushmills on offer, as well as Baileys, lager, cider and everything else you would expect to help the party on its way. And there are usually plenty of Guinness hats and other promotional giveaways for anyone who wants to dress up for the day. So come and join the local Irish and British community who’ll all be out in force to commemorate the tradition that is St. Patrick’s Day and partake in some good old Irish craic. winter refurbishment - including new toilets! OK it may seem an odd thing to feature on an advert but those who know the Ship will understand. Their toilets have become a bit of an institution, so we are all holding our breath and hoping we don’t have to hold our breath. On a less ablution based note Nell will be playing live and you’d expect there to be a fair bit of audience participation for those who are compelled to sing-n-sob their way through Danny Boy after enough toasts to the folks back home, or belt out Sally McNalane for no more reason that possession of a green wig and Guiness hat - it’s all good. After Work @ La Cava Every Friday from 7pm Nick Gibbs I have been very pleased to get reacquainted with Ibiza Town this winter. Ibiza’s capital has grown up a lot in recent years, the shops and civic amenities have come on hugely, though it still keeps that cool, chic and friendly ambience

that sets it apart from big cities. La Cava has become something of a regular place to start from. Business, food, social, people on the west coast will know what I mean why calling it a bit of a Ritas. Plus they support the newspaper through the winter months, and of course they have the paper itself. What better place to start The Ibizan Christmas party then. Yes we are a bit late, but fittingly so all

things considered. Friday nights at La Cava is “After Work”, a concept that will be familiar and popular to those of an office background back in the UK. DJ, great drink and Pinxto etc offers, (see ad front page) and - as is always the case at La Cava, lots of big smiles and food and drink that looks fantastic and tastes it too. We even had the honour of José taking to the decks for us, showing

the young kids how it should be done. A great night followed and La Cava was the perfect mood setter, the place you step up a gear from work to party, from furrowed brow to laughs and before you know it the ’don’t know if I fancy it’ person has gone through a metamorphosis into a full on ‘just try and stop me’ party person. And so we did party on, dropping a

Roadside Police Checks Guardia Civil @ N332 As they go about their duties patrolling the roads of Spain, the Guardia Civil traffic police have a whole range of tools in their arsenal to both help those in need, and of course deal with those drivers who break the law. One piece of kit carried by all of the officers, often stored in the panniers of their motorbikes, or inside the patrol cars, is their Personal Digital Assistant, or PDA. The device is linked via Blue-

tooth to a thermal printer, and so able to issue fines on the spot, and pools its data with the central office of the DGT traffic department. The PDA can be used to check driver and vehicle details, such as if you are actually qualified to drive, if you´ve been banned, if you own the vehicle you are driving, and details about that vehicle and its insurance. The whole process of checking the information is almost instantaneous, but it can take a lot

longer if the information provided by the driver is either inaccurate, or unknown. One particular problem facing foreign drivers is when they are

not registered as residents in Spain, or have not transferred their license to a Spanish one. For those who have, you are likely to be sent on your way a lot quicker than those with no registered details, as a single check of a drivers NIE number links all of the relevant driver and vehicle details together, and so the officers can almost instantly find the information they are looking to confirm. However, when the information is not linked, such as for drivers who haven´t swapped to a Spanish license, then the process takes a lot longer to complete, and your journey is likely to be increasingly delayed as a result. Converting your UK license to a Spanish version is a relatively

easy process. It can be done at your local DGT tráfico office, or you can hire one of the many specialist advisors who will complete the administrative process on your behalf, and a simple medical and computerised reaction test is all that is keeping you from joining the many residents who have already converted and enjoy an easier life on the roads. There is more information on the process available at our website n332.es

as well as links to find your local tráfico office and the information required to complete the process.

Mind, Body & Soul

Sabina Brownstein Every word that you think or speak has a strong impact on what happens in your life. Your self-talk not only describes what you see in your world... it actually helps to create it. Positive words carry a higher vibration, and they increase your “feel-good feelings”. Conversely, negative words resonate at a lower frequency, and they reduce your energy levels. To feel the difference, just take a moment and speak the following words out loud. First try the low frequency words - such as sad, failure and hate, and then take a moment to tune in to how you feel after saying them. Then do the same thing with the higher vibrating words - like joy, success and love, and again take a moment to tune in to how they make you feel. Odds are you will feel much better after saying the highenergy words. On a deeper level, your selfworth is very dependent on your

inner dialog - the thoughts and words that go through your mind. In this regard there are only two kinds of thoughts: those that empower you and those that don’t. Start noticing how you are speaking about yourself inside your mind, and you will be amazed at how much you put yourself down. Most of the time we are busy repeating the negative words and phrases that we learned in childhood and are still stuck with. Things like: “life is hard”, “you have to take the bad with the good”, “I don’t have any luck”, “I can’t do this... or that”. Each of these old phrases reinforce negative patterns in your subconscious mind. By changing your words you can create positive programming that reinforces a new core of beneficial beliefs. What you think about, speak about and focus on is what you manifest in your life. So your thoughts and language need to be consciously directed to produce great results. If you focus on

negative thoughts, or use low energy language, it will dramatically slow down the speed between what you desire and when you get it. Positive inner dialog is like a switch that turns up the power to manifest a happy and successful life. It starts by consciously listening to how you are talking to yourself and about yourself: is it uplifting or down putting? Here’s a simple yet powerful process that enables you to take more control of what comes into your mind... and out of your mouth. Whenever you catch yourself having said something negative, just stop for a moment and say “cancel- clear- delete”. Then immediately replace those low-energy words with ones that reflect the beauty and happiness that you want in your life. With practice you will remember to do this almost automatically, and the negative words will start to disappear from your inner conversation. Try this process for

Keep It Virgil Brewster Would you like to start training and don't know where to start? You would like to get in shape but you cannot make it work. Then this article is for you. I am super proud to present my first article for The Ibizan. My name is Virgil and I am the co-founder of The Workout Club Ibiza. Every month I will share with you exercises, training and mindset tips to get to your fitness goals at lightning speed. We have helped a lot of people achieve their goals and now our team of coaches and I are ready to assist you. But enough about me, let's get started.

• General Fitness Preparation

The magazines are raving about new fitness trends every month. Popular training DVDs like Insanity and P90X are hot topics on all social media channels. HITT classes prevail in every gym. All these training methods have their own place, and deliver fantastic results. But does that mean that you can jump in and start training hard 5 days a week from scratch? In the training system we use, we start with a period of GFP (General Fitness Preparation). No matter what fitness level, we take every single per-

son through this 4 week process. I hear you think... “Are you going to treat me like a beginner?” Well if you are, we will share with you the fundamentals. If you are not, we will build upon the foundation of strength, flexibility and energy regulation that you already posses.

• Training, not a quick fix but a lifestyle change:

We have not met a single person who could keep up with 5 days a week training week in, week out. That is very hard, most

of us are not athletes. You have a social life, work and family to take care of. That's why we like to keep things simple. Before you start any new fitness program please make sure that you have been cleared by a physician. Start with 2 to 3 times a week of 35 mins. Block the time in your agenda, turn off your phone and get your exercises done. It takes 21 days to form a habit, so keep it simple. Stick with it and find like-minded people to train with. This will be something you can maintain the rest of your life.

The Workout Club Ibiza GFP program: We are going to concentrate on

5 exercises these coming 4 weeks. The exercises are the Deep Squat also known as the Goblet Squat, the Push up, the Plank, The Bird Dog and the Crawl. Most of you already know how to perform these exercises, but we will share with you how we perform them safely. The exercises will have easy and more difficult variations depending on your fitness level. These exercises will work all your major muscle groups and more importantly, they will prepare you for the next phase of your training. Are you ready?

The Goblet Squat Imagine you have a big bag in your hands. Lower the bag on the floor quickly and get back up. The weight is on your heels (Continued on page 10)

abs and squeeze your bum, this will place your hips into neutral. Level 1: Hold this position for 15 secs. Level 2: Hold the position for 30 secs. Level 3: Go from plank to high plank & back for 30 secs.

your knees 2 cm off the floor and crawl forward. Very important to keep looking forward all the time. When you crawl backwards visualize that you push yourself back with the arms. Level 1: Just lift your knees of the floor and hold 30 secs. Level 2: Crawl 10 steps forward. Level 3: Crawl 10 steps forward and 10 steps backwards.

The Wave Cycle

Instead of going hard every day we prefer to use a wave cycle. This means you will have a light, medium and a heavy day. The reason for the wave cycle is to give your body a different stimulus. We don't use 20 different exercises but we use our 5 movements in different intensities throughout the week. An example program would look like this:

(Continued from page 9)

when you are down and open up your chest. Strive to keep a natural straight back. When you hold a Kettlebell or a dumbell in front of your chest, sink deep down and connect your elbows high on the inside of your knee. Push the floor away instead of getting up and stand tall. Tense your whole body to protect your lower back. Bring your tailbone down to the floor in bottom position and open up your chest. Push your knees in the same direction as your toes. As the father of the Goblet Squat, Dan John says, ‘Everything arrives at the same time’. That means don't lead with your bum but use your legs and push the floor away. Level 1: Put the imaginary bag on the floor and get back up. 15 times. Level 2: Sink in the deep position and push your knees out with your elbow. Level 3: Sink in the deep position holding a Kettlebell or weight in front of your chest.

Monday The Bird Dog Begin on hands and knees on the floor. Stretch out your left hand forward and your right leg kicks backwards. Make sure that you look at a point 30 cm in front of you to keep a natural neck alignment. Pull your toes up while stretching the leg. Now bring your left elbow to your right knee. letters to editor@theibizan.com Guiris in Ibiza Dear Editor, Your piece in the Ibiza Sun No 773 of 5th March 2015 surprised me greatly and alarmed me significantly. I could write many ‘000’s of words on my topic however I will limit my comments to one simple stricture, namely that ... It is the absolute responsibility, DUTY even, of everyone born outside Ibiza, who adopts the island as their home, to INTEGRATE into her society. Ibiza has sufficient “native” political parties, institutions, NGO’s, charities, lobby groups, special interest groups and causes to fulfil anyone’s demand for a “voice,” without ghettoising opinion into external national groups.

If there could be one sure fire way for we “blow ins” to become alienated, isolated and shunned by our delightful Ibicenco hosts, it is a group such as this! Please re-consider! Yours sincerely, Carl M Hague Ed: Thanks Carl, I do appreciate your thoughts. By way of fuller response I hope you will accept the article in this issue or next expanding on ideas and rationale for the group, but of course reconsideration would be by default if there is not sufficient interest. I am pleased you stressed the word ’integrate’, as did I in last week’s issue describing the modus operandi as “Participation, Contribution, Integration and Identity.” I hope we can convince you it is not all about flying the ex-pat union jack and chips with everything.

Meerkat For Sale in San Antonio Dear sirs, I have been reading on FB that there is a pet shop in San Antonio that are selling meerkats as pets. There is a video showing the meerkats being kept in a small area . if you look on Ibiza winter residents you can see for yourself. Could you investigate this and help the residents stop this cruelty. The island is known for love and peace they should show this to the animal's who also live there. Kind regards, S Thomas Ed, I have seen the posts on facebook, it caused quite a stir, but I have to say it is not the first time I have seen animals kept in Ibiza pet shops in conditions that might be unacceptable by UK standards. What do other readers think - we are living in a foreign land, should we accept our host’s practices and laws where, as S Thomas feels, they are cruel?

Letter From Juan As I have been possessed with the fact of not drinking and matters relating to drink during the last few weeks, it is not totally surprisingly that I came across the old saying “the hair of the dog” which as I am sure you know is an expression used for someone who has a hangover and their friends give them the helpful advice that they should drink some more to clear their head-

ache. However I found out that the full saying was in fact “the hair of the dog that bit!” The theory being that if you were bitten by a dog that putting burnt hair of the dog, that bit you, on the bite was the remedy that prevented any infection! If you ever come across a book of idioms and picturesque phrases have a dip into it and who knows you may be amused by the outcome. “Draw a long bow” to exaggerate. “See how the cat Jumps”: see which of the various alternatives are likely to be successful. Finally, I can think of a few people who “Burke the issue”: evade or suppress the issue before there is a chance to discuss it – taken from Burke, the body-snatcher in Edinburgh who used to suffocate his victims! Of course if you don’t fancy idioms you can always fall back on Proverbs “Bees that have honey in their mouths have stings in their tales”. Let’s move on, I can’t say March is turning out to be my favourite month this year it seems to be turning into a month of heavy expenditure not only do we have five birthdays in the family, we needed to get parts of the house painted and our water heater has decided to

start flooding the floor and we now need a new one. Although I shouldn’t really complain as it has lasted around 17 years and with all the salt and cal it has had to put up with over the years it has done pretty well. Whilst that would have been disappointing to our fathers in this day and age anything that last more than 10 years seems to be a miracle or am I just getting cynical in my old age? Heaven forefend! I hope you have a great week and that you get out and enjoy this weather. Yours, Juan.

View from the Pew “A cheerful heart is good medicine...” Proverbs 17:22 A doctor, a lawyer, a little boy and a priest were out for a Sunday afternoon flight on a small private plane. Suddenly, the plane developed engine trouble. In spite of the best efforts of the pilot, the plane started to go down. Finally, the pilot grabbed a parachute, yelled to the passen-

Guiri Time We have received some very encouraging enquiries, and already enough expressions of interest to stand that the Group should be viable. Interesting to have received contacts from two of Ibiza’s political parties (and I am pleased to say that having accidently used a spoof logo of the PSOE in last week’s news they took it in good spirit) and also from other nationalities. An almost, but not entirely, positive reaction - see letters. Keep the enquiries coming - more to follow very soon.

gers that they had better jump, and then he bailed out. Unfortunately, there were only three parachutes remaining. The doctor grabbed one and said "I'm a doctor, I save lives, so I must live," and jumped out. The lawyer then said, "I'm a lawyer and lawyers are the smartest people in the world. I deserve to live." He also grabbed a parachute and jumped. The priest looked at the little boy and said, "My son, I've lived a long and full life. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you. Take the last parachute and live in peace." The little boy handed the parachute back to the priest and said, "Not to worry, Father. The 'smartest man in the world' just took off with my back pack." 1 Cor. 1:20 “Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” Next Service: Sun 15th at San Rafael Church 10:30am Mothering Sunday Choral Communion with Praise & Worship.

Thursday 12th to Wednesday 18th March ARIES – The Magician A good week to get your point across in ways that make others sit up and listen. If you're in Marketing or Sales you score brownie points for your flair, presentation and original ideas. Being a skilful negotiator brings you financial rewards and in romantic situations you're able to make the right impression, even if you don't really mean it! TAURUS – Transformation Changes are inevitable this week as some doors close in certain areas of your life. This does mean however, that new doors will open, offering a different set of opportunities, don’t think negatively about your new circumstances. We don’t realise until after events unfold that we are actually better off and one particular situation is best left behind anyway. GEMINI – Ten of Wands A week where you feel you're running around in circles. If you're over doing it then for goodness sake delegate! Taking care of number one should be top of your list. Stressing out will get you, or important projects nowhere; if you stop to smell the roses, you'll calm down enough to see the exit strategy over an important dilemma. CANCER – The Moon (reversed) It’s easy to remain pessimistic and fret over how to handle situations where you feel trapped; however, if you get a grip and see situations as they really are, you’ll be able to plan your escape route. We cocreate our situations so there’s no point blaming others for our misfortune. Wait until any storm has passed before taking action. LEO – Knight of Swords (reversed) This Knight represents clashes of personality or differences of opinion. You might have to bite your tongue on more than one occasion and if pushed, will not suffer fools gladly. If you have doubts about another’s intentions you may well be right; trust your intuition. Better to cut your losses rather than risk creating problems for yourself in the future. VIRGO – Three of Cups You are here to be happy and this card reminds you of that fact! The best way to ensure this happens is to spend more time with those who bring you joy. If you've not caught up with friends or family lately; now's the time to do that. Golden opportunities, abundant times socially, financially and career wise through networking opportunities. LIBRA – Knight of Pentacles If someone offers you advice this week, make sure that they are not acting from self-interest. You may freely share ideas that help others, but make sure they don’t make off with them. Financial outlays need more research before your commitment. This is not to say that they won’t be profitable; however, make sure the investment is right for you. SCORPIO – Temperance Finally you’ll be given recognition and praise for what you have been diligently working on recently. Introduce a more harmonious and balanced routine into your day to day life; as it’s true that what you project on to others is a reflection of your own inner world. If any discordant situations arise, handle them right and you will be alright! SAGITTARIUS – Five of Swords As much as it is tempting to put yourself first, you would be wise to listen to what others have in mind this week. You won’t make friends by forcing a point or riding roughshod over others opinions. However, it may be difficult to keep your temper if you discover intrigue or deception going on behind your back. CAPRICORN – Ten of Swords (reversed) If you’ve not been on top form recently, this cycle is coming to an end. You’ll be more able to cope this week than for some time. New and positive situations are on their way so you’ll have plenty of reasons to be happy. If you’ve suffered emotionally, don’t be afraid to seek advice from a trusted source. AQUARIUS – Queen of Cups This card highlights the need to handle an emotional situation delicately, with kindness and compassion. Be more giving of your time and energy and listen rather than offer more advice. If you are the one who feels they are not being heard, take steps to create the appropriate boundaries. Get your point across in a gentle but firm way. PISCES – King of Pentacles (reversed) You have to deal with silly situations this week. All people seem to be interested in is money or precisely, your money. Don’t let others persuade you to part with yours and be careful who you trust. You could also be frustrated with a situation that is not being handled intelligently and are left incredulous at the laziness of others.

London Fashion Week ‘15

Y

es it’s only the start of spring and there are but a paltry one or two leaves starting to sprout on the bare trees. But last week’s LFW fast forwarded to what we should be eyeing up for Autumn 2015 and Winter 15/16. Here’s what made a big impact. In short, it’s all about the 70s and 80s.

Happy Friday Zipsters and welcome to this week’s edition of Zips It Up. Apologies for going AWOL last week. I had the worst flu ever and spent an entire week in my new home, the duvet. Almost back to full health, I’m loving the fact that Spring time has well and truly arrived in London. Friends tell me Summer has landed in the Balearics too, with temperatures in the upper 20s this week. Get me on a plane. So let’s start with 50 Shades, and I’ll keep this brief. It was good but, unlike the books, wasn’t brilliant. Jaimie Dornan and Dakota Johnson were convincing as the two main characters but something was missing. Mmmm. What was it? Ah, yes! Sex. Not enough sex at all. The books were crammed with filth and I feel a little short changed, as do many others, because we were all expecting a fleshfest – that was the mass anticipation. It was an 18 certificate that delivered a 15. What a caper. I’ve just watched Mr Georgio Armani defending the OTT Armani cape which played a big part in Madonna’s massive fall from stage (and grace) at the Brits 2015. Armani blames Madonna, commenting that the cape comes with a hook for easy unfastening but that she was being ‘difficult’ and wanted a tie, which was too tight, causing the fall. Either way, the market for this garment must surely be limited. Can you imagine swanning down your local High Street to WHSmiths in one of these ridiculous numbers? Besides that, watching the Brits is so boring now. It’s so sterile and safe. It used to be all about people getting utterly wasted, cheering and booing the hapless presenter. Who can forget Brandon Block storming the stage while Ronnie Wood was making an acceptance speech? It was full of F words, pissed up rock stars and serious out of control rioting. Bring back the Rock’n’roll FFS…

T

he long, layered look has a lot going for it. It’s classy, it’s elegant, it’s easy to wear. Christopher Kane’s party dresses work because they push the sex appeal buttons without ever looking cheap. Velvet and layered dreamy, balletic layered tulles were loud and proud. A coat scissored at the ribs, and a cocktail dress censored across the breasts with strips of stretchy black tape, made for the hottest show of the week, apparently. I love the deep colours, although some of those cocktail dresses were a tad too Kate Middleton for me. www.christopherkane.com

Topshop Unique gave us the view from the mountaintop of the high street

Oh, and of course don’t forget Mother’s Day next weekend. I have the perfect gift solution if your Mum loves a cuppa and something sweet. The Sweet Reason Company’s Mother’s Day personalised letterbox-friendly boxes of deliciousness. A selection of special Teabags with crystallised sugar stirrers and complementing handmade brownies in flavours such as Raspberry cheesecake, Banofee Pie, Salted Caramel and Coconut, they are sure to please that special Lady in our lives. There is also a gift card to write your Mother’s Day greeting. Orders can be post dated too, so you can order now and your box will be delivered in time for the 15th March! Burberry; next season’s coats suede or quilted

T

opshop Unique is easily my favourite British label right now. Affordable and easy to wear. Unpatriotic though it may be to admit it, one of the most important names at London fashion week is Saint Laurent. The allure of Saint Laurent lived large in the front row, where YSL-initialled bags have overtaken Chanel 2.55s as the trophy de jour. Topshop took, as always, an accurate temperature reading, producing a collection that mixed Saint Laurent’s party-girl cool with 1980s-power moments. A sleazy-shiny skirt worn with a tweed biker and a polo neck, and a lush milkchocolate velvet jumpsuit, hit catwalk gold. Sheer lace promises to be the evening wear of choice come this September, so God help us all – both cold and see-through. The Balearics maybe, London definitely not. Cara DLV and Jourdan ruled the Topshop runway, as usual, and it seems that we’re moving from 70s into 80s Ladies with a 2015 shizzle. www.topshop.com

ven Burberry knows that next autumn is not a trenchcoat moment. The Burberry catwalk – which, for an autumn/winter season, is all about outerwear – began with clashing multicoloured prints, and ended with a fulllength fringed burgundy suede cape. Madonna has clearly jumped on the cape bandwagon very recently, or should I say ‘fallen off’? Intricate swirls and florals inspired by quilting swayed stood next to mirror-embroidered suede. Buy a midilength suede skirt now, and start saving for a jacket next season. Quilting was also a key reference at Hunter, another heritage-rich British outerwear label, so be on the lookout for a fully fledged revival. www.burberry.com

JW Anderson (main photo top) pointed us towards the oncoming 80s trend

L

ondon is a city where the trend story moves on rapidly. The 70s are sticking around for ever, but London’s most forward-thinking designers are already looking ahead to the next big thing. Since J W Anderson’s show the smart money has been on that being the 1980s. The last time fashion mined that decade, it was for boss-lady power dressing. This time around, it’s all about circular belt buckles and pushed-down, backing-singer boots. For 1980s inspo, see also: the fuschia silk jumpsuit with silk rope belt and fringed booties at Matthew Williamson. www.j-w-anderson.com

Anyway, onto this week’s Zips It Up and in this week’s instalment we look at the best bits of London Fashion Week 2015, where the battle of the decades has begun. Armani Cape off, Louboutins to one side, PJs and slippers on… get ready to enjoy this week’s Zips It Up. X

not performing at the mo' as they wasted chance after chance. Big mistake, as Barça then won 6-1 at home to Rayo featuring a 15 minute Messi hat-trick, a new record in the league being his 24th, to take over top spot by a point. Fortunately for Real, neighbours Atlético, in 3rd, could only draw 1-1 at home with 4th placed Valencia so the gap between the two is still 5 points. So, sports fans, that's it for now, gotta go and get that jet ski fired up and get you know who on the back and that could be very interesting! ¡Hasta la vista!

Sport.. Jezza’s Sport Report Jeremy Parmenter Well, sports fans, here I am in the sunny but windy Caribbean, taking time out to keep you abreast of the main sports news, altho' by the time you read this "'er indoors!" and I should be back on our favourite island in the Med, after a short break. Talking of short, this will be, as "she who must be obeyed" has made various threats to my anatomy if I don't get off this iPad to take her out on a jet ski and yes, you read that right! So, on pain of death, here goes:

Tennis Amazing scenes in Glasgow as GB beat the U.S. in their Davis Cup tie where Andy Murray inspired his colleagues to a 3-2 win. After Andy and then James Ward had set up a 2-0 lead, the latter after an amazing comeback to defeat Isner in a marathon 5 setter, winning the final set 1513, the U.S. came back to win the doubles to set Brit hearts a flutter, but then Andy won the 4th match to go 3-1 up and settle the tie, despite GB losing the last rubber. Murray's team now go forward to a World Group last 8 tie with France in July.

Rugby Union

At the top of the Premiership Northampton shared 66 points with Gloucester to assure their place in the end of season playoffs whilst it's looking like Exeter, Saracens and Bath may well join them after all winning at the w/end, altho there's still 5 games to go and only 2 points separating these 3 plus Leicester and Wasps.

Cricket In the current World Cup down under, congrats to Ireland who are looking good for the last 8 as, having beaten the Windies already they took another step towards qualification, beating Zimbabwe, although it'll be difficult as they still have to play Pakistan and India. As for the Windies, am having interesting conversations with the menfolk here in Barbados, as they feel the same about their chances as we do with England i.e. nil! Basically, they have to beat the UAE in their last game and hope that the Irish come unstuck in their last 2 games, but if the weather intervenes in either game ending in a no result in would see the Windies coming home. Same for our boys really, as with only 2 games left, against Afghanistan

James Anderson is bowled by Bangladesh's Rubel Hossain, as England are dumped out of the Cricket World Cup

and Bangladesh, we have got to win both to qualify. And, let's face it, if we can't beat both we don't deserve to be there anyway but, even then, knowing our lot, we'll probably get there and lose embarrassingly in the Quarters. Stop Press: Just woken up to the worst possible news from Adelaide which sums up England cricket at the moment, as they have literally in the last few minutes lost to Bangladesh to be knocked out of the World Cup. Set an achievable 276 to win, and needing 16 from 10 balls, England were bowled out for 260 in a result that will certainly shake the cricket world and, hopefully, should see the demise of Moores as coach. Embarrassing, lacklustre, pathetic and

spineless are just a few words to describe this England team so Nuff said!

Footie In brief, due to the FA Cup games at the w/end, there was a full Premier League programme midweek, and incredibly, the top 7 all won, to leave the league as was, with leaders Chelsea still 5 points clear of Man City but with an all important game in hand. On to the FA Cup and the Quarters saw Aston Villa as the first team in to the Semis at Wembley to give new manager Tim Sherwood a real fillip, after a 2-0 win over Midlands neighbours West Brom. After their recent giantkilling acts in previous rounds (don’t remind me!) Bradford were held at home in a scoreless

draw by Championship team Reading to force a replay at the Madjeski, while, surprisingly, form team Liverpool were also held to the same score by Blackburn at Anfield with a replay at Ewood Park to come. The last tie takes place on Monday night with the tie of the round as Man U take on Arsenal at OT. Sorry, Mnsr Wenger, but my money's on the Reds to win through by the odd goal in what could be a cracker! Mind you, having said that, you all know my record regarding predictions! Finally, big surprise in La Liga as Real Madrid suffered their 5th league defeat of the season as they were beaten 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao with the holy trinity of Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale just
