156 Passengers of Sorrento rescued safely. Fire under control and no pollution yet. Still fears of ferry sinking and major environmental consequences.
The fire aboard the car ferry Sorrento was reported to be under control this afternoon - 24 hours after the evacuation of its 156 passengers and crew. Spanish news agencies said that the authorities were waiting for it to be completely extinguished before sending personnel aboard the vessel prior to
taking it under tow, probably to the port of Palma in Majorca.
A tug from Tarragona on the Spanish mainland was due to arrive on site this afternoon, while Spanish public works minister Ana Pastor was set to chair a meeting in Palma later this afternoon to decide how to proceed with the salvage operation. So far, there has been no pollution, according to the Spanish authorities, but there are fears that major pollution could occur if the vessel were to sink in its current position some 20 miles off the Majorcan coast. Fire broke out aboard the vessel in the early afternoon yesterday shortly after it had left Palma for Valencia on the Spanish mainland. A truck driver aboard the vessel said he heard explosions going off like "bombs". Passengers and crew stayed aboard the vessel for an hour before the captain gave the order to take to the lifeboats as the fire became more intense. All passengers were evacuated safely but the Spanish Ministry of Public Works and Transport said that four crew members had had to be picked up by helicopter and taken to hospital in Majorca. Three were subsequently discharged. The Europa Press news agency reported this morning that a Spanish Navy minesweeper had joined other vessels at the scene to combat the fire still burning aboard the vessel, which was 15 n miles off Majorca when the (Continued on page 2)

alarm was raised shortly before 1400 h local time. The minesweeper, which had been taking part in a naval exercise, was called in to help the firefighting effort by Salvamento Maritimo, the Spanish maritime rescue service. Europa Press said that it was carrying 600 litres of foam-forming liquid which Spanish defence ministry sources said was highly effective in extinguishing fires. It is not yet known what caused the fire, which, according to the Sorrento's Spanish operator, Trasmediterranea-Acciona, broke out on the vessel's number four vehicle deck. Frightened passengers said afterwards that they considered
Municipal Elections We invited all standing political parties to submit statements outlining their policies for the benefit of our British and Irish ex-pate readers. Though several have indicated they intend to do so, only Reinicia Sant Antoni have gone as far as sending us text before the end of April as was requested. Therefore it is over to them, first and alone, and whatever their politics I am sure their interest in our involvement will not go unnoticed or unappreciated by many in the community.
Reinicia Sant Antoni Reinicia Sant Antoni is a municipality citizen platform contesting in the upcoming elections in Sant Antoni de Portmany with the objective to dignify the social and economic policies of the council, turn around the urban and tourist situation and strengthen the popular cohesion and the asso-

The Spanish Minister of Works, Ana Pastor, said after the rescue that the government's priority was now to prevent an environmental accident. "The priority was the people," she said. "Now we have to avoid any kind of environmental risk. We need to maximise our efforts to minimise the risk.” The Sorrento is owned by the Italian company Atlantica di Navigazione, part of the Grimaldi group.

Guidance for Youngsters Counterpart Driving Licences are abolished. Motorists warned about problems hiring cars abroad.
Paper counterparts to driving licences will not be valid after June 8 2015 Motorists going abroad after 8 June are being warned they will need to take a special code with them if they want to hire a car. From that date the paper coun-
Through social networks (facebook and twitter) we issue a constant call for participation. Anyone who has ever felt part of this town and wants to get back its lost pride, has a place on this platform. If we receive enough support in the upcoming municipal elections, we will do our best to implement our program and our transparency in the way we understand politics. terpart of British driving licences - which records endorsements and fines - is being computerised. Anyone wanting to hire a car abroad will officially need a code to show convictions for offences like speeding. To obtain it, motorists will have to log on to the DVLA website beforehand. But the code is only valid for 72 hours, so anyone wanting to hire a car more than three days into their trip will need to generate a new code while they are abroad. For those who do not have internet access, a phone number will also be made available. The RAC said many drivers were unaware of the changes. "Our research shows that with just over a month to go before the paper counterpart to the photo-card licence disappears, 55% of drivers are not aware of the planned change," said RAC spokesman Simon Williams. 'Belt and braces' The DVLA recommends destroying paper counterparts after 8 June. However the AA is advising people to hang on to the document, in case some hire companies are unaware of the new arrangements. "Not all car rental companies, or indeed traffic police abroad, will be aware of the changes, so a 'belt and braces' approach of also taking the counterpart might help," said AA president Edmund King. But the AA also said that hiring a car abroad without a paper counterpart is not always a problem. Just as some car hire companies do not currently ask for a counterpart, not all will ask for a code after 8 June. The old-style paper licences, issued before the photo card was introduced in 1998, will remain valid, but holders will still need a code to fully validate them. The changes do not apply to driving licences issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland.
The Consell Insular d'Eivissa launches, starting next Monday 27th April, the Guidance Service for Young People. It is an orientation program conducted by psychologists and staff Noelia Luque and Anna Pallás, advisers and creators of the program “Atreverte" (Dare). This program stems from the idea and the need to create a space where teens can feel comfortable and can find guidance and advice to their concerns, a solution to the anxieties of their own age. So they can speak, opened up without taboos and feel the support of therapists and colleagues. The basic purpose and structure of the program is to work with different aspects with teen users, such as: - Self-esteem and self-awareness. - The development of social skills and awareness of the influence of their relationship with others. - The professional guidance to address this point in life where new doors open, changes appear and time has come to take decisions. - Education and racial integration. Learning to live with differences help us grow. The schedule for this service will be every Monday and Wednesday from 16 to 20 hours at the Espai Jove.

Tap Water “Not Fit To Drink” Sinac, the national information system belonging to the Ministry of Health, reports that tapwater isn’t suitable for consumption in five areas of the island. Excess levels of chlorides were recorded in Sant Jordi, Platja d’en Bossa and Roca Llisa, arsenic in Cala Mastella, fluoride in sa Serra, and carbon in Can Coix, Can Negre and Punta Galera. The water supply network named Sant Josep I which covers sa Carroca, es Cubells, Playa d’en Bossa, San Jordi and San Jose showed 3550 milligrams of chloride per litre of water when the maximum amount in water considered fit for human consumption is 250 mg/l. A spokesman for water supplier FCC Aqualia emphasised that his company is not responsible for the salinity levels in the water, adding “it is the government’s problem, in this case related to the imple-

mentation of the desalination plant in Santa Eularia.” Arsenic amounts ‘trivial’ FCC Aqualia is also responsible for supplying tap-water to Cala Mastella where excessive levels of arsenic were discovered by Sinac, however the company sought to downplay the fact, claiming the levels only exceeded the safety threshold by a small amount and that the problem is nothing new but a recurring issue. A spokesman explained, “extract water from wells is percolating (filtered through a porous medium) through the ground and reaches an underground aquifer. In that percolation process minerals are dissolved. There are places where iron, sulfates, nitrates or, as in this case, arsenic is assimilated. The amounts are trivial.” Fluoride The company offered the same explanation for excess fluoride levels discovered in a third net-
work, known as Vicent RibasFerreret and which covers the area of Sa Serra, in San Jose, on the border with San Antonio. Sinac recorded levels of 2.02 mg/l of fluoride, a significant amount more than the maximum of 1.5 mg/l suggested for safe drinking and cooking water. The report from the Ministry of Health also highlighted a well in Roca Llisa supplying the Jesus area which had 1.940 mg/l of chloride, over eight times the limit for consumption. A water supply network comprising Punta Galera, Can Negre, Can Coix and Sa Capella (San Antonio) was found to have excessive levels of carbon (excess organic matter). Delegates from digital, technology and entertainment companies including Google and Spotify will gather in Ibiza next month for an invite-only conference on the beach. Google and Spotify will head to Ibiza for a 'beach conference' Delegates from digital, technology and entertainment companies including Google and Spotify will gather in Ibiza next month for an invite-only conference on the beach. Organised by QVentures, part of the lifestyle management group Quintessentially, the Beta Beach event on 29 May promises to invert the traditional conference model by giving prominence to the informal elements. David Mickler, founder of QVentures, said: "Beta Beach fuses thought leadership and networking with the Ibiza vibe. It’s a cocktail which is one part thinking, one part meeting and two parts socialising." Hosted at some of the island’s most famous beach clubs, up to a
couple of hundred guests from organisations including William Morris, Activision, Wayra, Akqa and Venture Spring can expect a day of "blue sky thinking by the beach". The free event includes lunch at El Chiringuito and will culminate in a beach party with a headline set from Groove Armada. Mr Mickler said: "The vision is to create a uniquely stimulating gathering that sparks collaborative discussion, new ventures and friendships in a relaxed setting. It’s a platform that enables a community to share creativity, intelligence, and passions." He added that the "real value" in conferences lies between the plenaries and break-out sessions. "All the interesting stuff happens during the breaks and drinks receptions," he said. "That’s why Beta Beach inverts the conventional conference model. The informal elements dominate the agenda and even the more structured elements take place by the beach."

idway between Santa Eulalia and the village of Cala Llonga you’ll notice a signpost to your left pointing south – in the direction of the nearby sea. However, this little road leads you up into the hills and a little enclave known as ‘Valverde’. If you follow the road straight on, it twists and turns its way steeply down through the ‘green valley’ into the coastal resort of Cala Llonga. It’s reminiscent of an Alpine road, in that if you take your eyes off the road for even a millisecond you’ll probably crash the car. On the other hand if you pull over at the top, before the road begins its descent, you’ll find a spectacular view of the surrounding hills and the steep valley leading into Cala Llonga. It could almost be an Alpine view if it weren’t for the sea sparkling in the dis-

tance. Maybe it was this unique situation that first convinced Johannes Greinen almost forty years ago that he had found the perfect spot to spend the rest of his life? Anyway, as you stand at the high point of the hill admiring the view you’ll notice a lovely old finca with a pretty garden set with tables laid at your feet. Welcome to La Casita restaurant… Johannes bought this finca some thirty years ago and has turned it into one of the island’s most popular restaurants, so it can fairly be said that his ‘labour of love’ has turned from renovating the finca to the extraordinary creations that emanate from his kitchen. His dishes harmonise his own Austrian roots with Ibicenco customs, produce and some considerable flair. On the day of our visit a group of locals had climbed the

hill to sit in the delightful restaurant garden simply to enjoy the view, even though the restaurant didn’t appear to open. In fact, I had to ring Johannes to tell him that we’d arrived and ask him to let us in? An employee opened the door and spotted the unexpected visitors in the garden over my shoulder as he let me in and by the time I left the visitors were enjoying a round of refreshments while drinking in the view! Johannes had told us that the restaurant is frequented as much by locals as tourists, and this doesn’t come as a surprise. It’s long been the case that the locals don’t like to spill all the beans when it comes to their favourite ‘island secrets’ to just any old visitor. Sorry locals – word just got out… Images: Above, La Casita in its wedding party finery, Below; Dishes from their menu.

At Night
Dance night at the Proms
2015 marks the 120th anniversary of the world’s longest-running music festival, and as one of several leftfield events to mark the occasion the Royal Albert Hall is set to host an orchestral celebration of Ibiza club classics. Described as “a musical homage to Ibiza and its infectious energetic brand of club music” the performance will be overseen by DJ Pete Tong, and is also part of the events planned to mark the 20th anniversary of Radio 1 in Ibiza. Songs will include Rhythm is Rhythm’s Strings of Life and Stardust’s Music Sounds Better with You. Tong said the event, would “reimagine some of the most enduring dance music tracks in the history of dance music”. This year’s proms director Edward Blakeman said it was a “natural” move to stage the Radio 1 Prom. “This is a perfect thing to realise on a big orchestra,” he continued. “It’s been a huge phenomenon, the 20 years, so why would we not celebrate it, but celebrate it in Proms way with a big orchestra.” Mr Blakeman added that it would help bring in new audiences to the festival. “If you can bring in a new audience with the bigger Proms message, some of this will rub off. This is about how we build audiences as well as just doing it because it is good.”
Grime Symphony
In another nod to contemporary music, Radio 1Xtra will present a “grime symphony” with artists including Wretch 32 and Krept & Konan. The principal theme for the classical repertoire will be the piano, said Blakeman. All of Beethoven’s piano concertos will be p e r formed by pianist Leif O v e Andsnes and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and Prokofiev’s five piano concertos will be performed for the first time in the same concert. Other quirky offerings will be a Prom narrated by Sir David Attenborough, a work inspired by the Hubble Space Telescope and a concert reflecting the music tastes of Sherlock Holmes.

Ibiza’s annual Medieval Festival takes place this year from May 7th-10th. Held in and around Dalt Vila to celebrate Ibiza’s World Heritage Site status, the area becomes a huge open-air street market and theatre. The streets are decorated for the event, and are filled with market stalls with stallholders dressed up in medieval costumes, selling everything from crafts, clothes, jewellery, food and drinks, and there will be live entertainment and performances throughout the town. The full programme of activities has not yet been released, so we’ll report more in the next issue. Info will be here online: http://bit.ly/1bz5WKi
Medieval Tapas in Ibiza
To coincide with the Medieval Festival in Ibiza Town, several of the bars and restaurants in the town participate in tapas and meal deals on Thursdays from May 7th. A pincho (a snack, usually on a piece of bread) and a drink will be on offer at a set price (about 2€) and some restaurants offer ‘Medieval Banquets’. It’s a great way to try out places you haven’t been to before and sample their food. At the time of going to press the participating establishments had not been announced, but look out for posters and leaflets in bars and restaurants around town. More info next week.

Pirate Tower at Playa D’en Bossa The pirate tower on the hill at the end of Playa D’en Bossa is now open for visits. Known as Torre de sa Sal Rosa (Tower of the pink salt) or Torre des Carregador (tower of the carrier), it was built in the 16th century to protect the island and its inhabitants from invaders. With a strategic location of looking out across to Formentera and Ibiza Town, this tower was also designed to protect the workers who collected and loaded salt from the nearby salt flats (before they built the large pier in Salinas) and could provide refuge to 150-200 people. It is the only tower in the Pitiüses (Ibiza and Formentera) to have a fireplace inside. The tower is one of the most emblematic to be found on the islands and has been designated as a monument of cultural interest. It is one of the only pirate towers in Ibiza that is open to the public as a tourist attraction and is a good opportunity to see inside and learn about the towers, which can be found in many strategic defensive positions around the island. Inside there is a small exhibition giving information about the tower and its history and you can go up the stairs onto the roof, where there are great views along the beach across to Dalt Vila and beyond and across the sea towards Formentera. It is a relatively easy 10 minute walk up to the tower from the end of the beach (near Coco Beach where there is parking) or you can access it by car from the unpaved road that leads from Sant Francesc. Open Tuesday-Sunday (closed on Monday), 10am-2pm, free entrance.

forgotten Ela's sun cream and coat, a trip to Decathlon en route quickly sorted that, and Mike got a flat tyre which he stopped by his work to mend) we boarded the ferry and in just over half an hour, docked in a sun soaked Salinas. People had warned us it was not very bicycle friendly and was rather expensive, but we found neither of these to be true. There are well marked bicycle routes all over the island and bike paths along all the major routes. The path running between the salt flats and beach from Salinas toward Es Pujols in particular is spectacular boasting views across to Es Vedrรก on one side and of still glittering salt flats on the o t h e r . Though staying in Es Pujols, we cycled about a fair bit in our three days and visited Sant Francesc, San Ferrer, Ses Illetes, Playa Mig-
Page 8
jorn, Salinas and a great deal of the countryside in between. Each town and beach had something different to offer and each route we cycled gave us different things to look at, from prehistoric ruins, wildflowers, inland waters and olive groves to pristine beaches, fishing shacks, boats and breathtaking cliff top views. Es Pujols itself was a lovely place to stay as a family. It has a lovely long white beach flanked by rocky cliffs which were great fun to climb and backed by gorgeous sand dunes. The promenade featured several restaurants, cafes and bars and the little numbered plaques on the ground were tell tale signs of a bustling market in Summer. The beach was dotted with picturesque varaderos and quirky chiringuitos and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. The little town has a park, shops, restaurants and lots of hotels. We stayed in Hostal Rosales which was clean, comfortable, affordable, and served an awesome buffet breakfast. A great base from which to explore the island. Those who've been to Formentera before will know how stunning our sister island is, but for those who haven't, let me paint a little picture. White, sandy, clean beaches, turquoise and crystal clear waters, pretty little towns, a few historic ruins, gorgeous, character laden beach chiringuitos (and a couple of the seemingly omnipresent 'beach clubs'), rows of ancient little boat houses and miles of unspoilt nature. I imagine much like Ibiza thirty odd years ago. We had a wonder-
ful, energising break and thoroughly enjoyed cycling around exploring with our little chica on the back of Daddy's bike. She enjoyed herself too and found the ride very comfortable, even falling asleep a few times! If you're looking for nightlife, it probably isn't for you, at least not out of season anyway. However, if you're looking for relaxation or exercise in beautiful, natural surroundings, then you can't go wrong with Formentera. We'll definitely be heading back. We travelled with Trasmapi and booked online. Balaeria also offer online bookings and there are several other companies in the port in Ibiza town selling tickets to Formentera.
To get residents discount, we only needed to put in our NIE numbers when booking and the computer system confirmed we were residents, but some companies may require a print-out from your local Ayuntamiento. For accommodation we used www.booking.com but all online hotel booking companies feature Formentera hotels.

How to Find the Spanish Banks’ Bargain Properties? Nick Gibbs To buy or not to buy. So many factors come into play in deciding whether now is the right time to take the plunge. In Ibiza the overriding factor for many people is the simple equation of whether or not they can afford to buy. Ibiza continues to command hugely inflated prices compared to much of the rest of Spain, though of course any economist of monetarist persuasion, and most estate agents, would argue that prices are simply a true reflection of supply and demand. None the less, even our closest neighbours still have access to what we would consider ridiculous prices by Ibiza standards. We recently found a 3 bed apartment in Mallorca for sale through bank foreclosure, for under 30,000€. OK it was a very small 70m2 3 bed, in need of updating - but not rennovating, but even so it is enough to make many look across the Med towards our big sister with a degree of envy. Then again as one ex-pat said after leaving Ibiza to live in Mallorca and promptly returning after just a few months, “Yeah but Mallorca is rubbish, Ibiza is fun.” Remember that next time you are paying your whopping mortgage/ rent. For anybody looking to buy we publish here a list of the websites the Spanish banks use to dispose of their excess stock. Discounts are not as great as they were in the height of the recession, but there are still bargains to be found, and even if you still can’t afford a home in Ibiza you may take comfort in knowing you could be a property tycoon in some of Spain’s depressed industrial towns. Even a quick search in these links revealed plentiful supplies of reasonable apartments in urbanisations with swimming pools etc in the ex-pat coastal concentrations for 40,000€ and upward. Read it and weep, you might say, but then if you find one in Ibiza you could be laughing all the way to the bank.

P.P. Propose Cut in Property Purchase Tax to 6% on sales up to 200,000€
President of the Balearics, José Ramón Bauzá, who is standing for re-election in May with the P.P. party, has announced that the PP will include in its manifesto tax cuts that will affect, among others, Stamp Duty and capital transfer tax. The proposal is for a special reduced rate of 6% to be created in the transfer tax for property sales up to a value of up to 200,000 euros, subject to the property being intended for use as a main residence. Furthermore, the stamp duty tax will be reduced by 50%, from 1.2% to 0.6%.

Intercorp Apartments for Sale in Cala De Bou
For locals who know, the apartments are in the Pie De Mar complex, just over the junction at the end of the tourist drag of the lower bay road, on your way to the Seaview. For those who don't the apartments are in a very quiet area of Cala de Bou, 2 minutes walk from the main tourist area, but far enough out of it to be peaceful by day and night. As the name suggests they are just footstep from the sea, with a direct view out to San An's famous sunset. Apartments range from 1 bed for €99k, 2 bed for €140k and up to a 3 bed penthouse with an 80m2 terrace with panoramic views of the sea, islands and that sunset for €550k. Will suit either year round residence, holiday homes, or buy-to-rent - which you can either self manage or let the intercorp group do it all for you (they offer a 'with profit' return on investment in 5 years) . See ad below for more details and viewings.
The issue of ridiculously high rental rates has been causing something of a stir in Ibiza’s social media world recently, and so for once it is good to be able to report some good news of the accommodation front. Hostal Balearic is based in the heart of San Antonio just a few minutes walk from Ibiza Rocks (or as many locals will know it ‘immediately opposite the dole office’. Now under the new management of American Daniel and his family, they are certainly putting their stamp of stateside customer service on a sector where it is so often lacking. Their ethos could perhaps be described as ‘Bargain accommodation can and should still be good accommodation.’ I have been around the hotel, and had a friend stay there, and what they are offering must be the bargain of the season. For the whole of May, bookings made direct in person and via their own website (i.e. not the big search engines) can take rooms at just 18.75€ per night, so in effect for most people that is under a tenner a night. That is a lot less than many workers pay to live in 8 people in a 2 bed apartment conditions, and though a bargain price the accommodation is anything but. The rooms are smart, with contemporary design, and some nice creature comforts you would not dream of expecting for the price. Balearic is the perfect ‘settling in’ accommodation for anybody coming over to look for work and a longer term place to stay.

View from the Pew Our Chaplain, Rev Dr Peter Pimentel, will be leading a 10 week Bible study on the amazing Book of Revelation – starting May 7th at the chaplaincy house in Port des Torrent. For more info or directions contact Peter or Sue: 971 343383. The book of Revelation is about the revelation of Jesus Christ! Over the centuries, this book has mystified many readers due to the visions, all of which contain figurative language pointing to the spiritual realities in and behind historical experience. Signs and symbols are essential because spiritual truth and unseen reality are most often communicated to human beings through their senses. Symbols point to what is ultimately indescribable. These prophetic visions are communicated to Apostle John only
when he is “in the Spirit”. The content of these visions is nothing less than “The Revelation of Jesus Christ”. The Revelation is a cosmic pageant – an elaborate, colourful series of tableaux, accompanied and interpreted by celestial speakers and singers. The spoken word is elevated prose, more poetic than the translations indicate. The music is similar to a cantata. Repeatedly, themes are introduced, later reintroduced, combined with other themes, and developed. Our Chaplain Peter, with his knowledge of Hebrew and Greek, has the advantage of understanding ancient Biblical and historical manuscripts, thus giving him a vivid view of the times in which the Apostle John wrote the conclusive book of Revelation – a book of Hope, Comfort &Victory. Ants ... Carly Sorensen
This time of year always feels alive and buzzing. The weather is warmer, the streets are filling up, bars and restaurants are reopening, and the fields, beaches, woods and gardens are bursting with beauty. The flowers are in bloom, lemon trees are heavy with fruit, nature is vibrant and alive and glorious and... finding its way into my house. Yep, you've guessed it. Ants! Nature's engineers, capable of constructing marvels of architecture overnight. Strong, hardworking, focused, determined. Great fun to watch in the garden but an absolute nightmare to get rid of once they find their way into your home. I love nature. As a kid I'd spend hours outdoors with a little birds and flowers of Britain guidebook, ticking off every species I could find. I'd scrabble about in the coal bunker in our garden catching big spiders in jam jars, I'd hunt through the long grass for slow worms and legless lizards, count butterflies and bees, and collect wild fruit in the autumn. As a grown up, I am still happiest amongst nature, outdoors playing with my daughter on the beach or in the garden, smelling flowers with her, swimming in the sea, cruising on the boat, pointing out and photographing lizards, birds, insects and sea life. Feeling the sun on my face, the wind in my hair and watching nature hard at work. But not in my kitchen! Not busily digging out the grouting at the base of my wall and making an orderly train to my fruit bowl. Not marching in formation towards my bin. As a nature lover and mum to a toddler I am loathe to use chemicals, so took to the Internet in search of a natural solution. Over the past week I have followed almost all of the advice. I have followed the ants back to their entry point and sealed it up. They found another one. I sealed that. They found another. I sealed that. They came in through a tiny gap I missed,
tauntingly parading along the skirting. I now need to buy more sealant. I squirted white vinegar over their tracks and around the entry points. They came back as soon as it dried. I left out lemon wedges, they were crawling on them in the morning. I dotted garlic cloves about, they only avoided those specific areas. I sprinkled cinnamon around. It just made a mess. I couldn't put copper coins down because I have a toddler in the house. Finally, I went Mafia. I squished some and left their bodies out for their comrades to carry home. I'd read that this worked as a deterrent, sending out the message that this was not a house to be messed with. Capiche? Either the Internet lied (heaven forbid!) or these particular ants are hardened mafioso types themselves because, after an initial panicked scattering, they came right on back, callously marching past the corpses of their men. So, I became an insect murderess for naught and my battle with these dogged six legged invaders continues. I plan to buy more sealant and seal every crack and crevice in these old walls and floors. I even heard recent tales of an electrical device which emits sound waves to ward off any and all insects which may well be worth more a purchase. Until then, my admiration for the persistence and commitment of this little army grows. As does my trepidation on opening the kitchen door every morning and wondering if today is the day I'll find a colony in the colander and not just scouts around the skirting board. First world problems, hey?

Book Review Made in Nirvana. Richard Lawson
This week we invite you to the launch of the English version of the novel “Made in Nirvana”, which was almost entirely written on Ibiza. Sunday 3rd May from noon till 6 pm sees the launch of the new book at the beautiful Atzarò Hotel, in Ibiza. The author(ess), Emanuela (Manu), will have a few copies of the book for sale and will happily sign your copy, if you wish. It will also be the last day of the Atzarò winter market with DJs playing throughout the afternoon. A wonderful opportunity to spend a few hours in the beautiful agroturismo’s grounds and catch up with friends. "Made in Nirvana" is an exciting story set in India, where the author lived for six years. It's about love, friendship, experimenting with drugs, naivety and deceit but, above all, India and Buddhism. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Manu and her partner Richard since before we bumped into each other here and discovered that we’d both chosen Ibiza as our ‘escape route’ from the drudgery of England. Throughout the time that I’ve known Manu she’s always been a happy, vivacious and devout Buddhist, and I admit to a little trepidation on picking up her ‘autobiography’, which I feared might contain a tad of preaching… However, I’m happy to report that the book beautifully portrays the emotions and experiences of a life-changing journey of discovery through the eyes of a much younger and more adventurous Manu – at a time in her life when every day meant a new and exciting discovery. It’s a fabulous read for its evocative descriptions of life on the road in India as a backpacker,
colourfully intertwined with the tenets of Buddhism that leaves you wondering why other religions can’t be more smiley and fun! As a close friend of the author over a long period of time it still made me feel much closer to her, myself and most of the rest of humanity – inspiring… You can read some reviews below: http://amzn.to/1Jxu3Y9
Summary: Although they hardly know each other, Maria and Franca are both afraid to go to India alone, so the odd couple set off on the journey of their dreams… and nightmares. Maria is searching for herself and, ideally, the love of her life. Franca is seeking the buzz with any type of drug she can lay her hands on. India is ready and waiting for them. Travelling through the chaos and the magic of India, meeting its people and their ancient wisdom, the landscapes, smells, perfumes, sounds and many gods, they make unforgettable friends and come into contact with a new way of looking at life. There, in the swirling magic of the land, they will both find a lot more than they had bargained for and realize that for everything there is a price to pay. Will they rise to the challenge and grow, or lose themselves and fall? A story of love, friendship, experiments with drugs, naivety and deception, an inner journey of discovery of the infinite potential of human nature, but above all India and Buddhism. Fascinating, intriguing, deep and at the same time light and fun, an original story that grabs you from start to finish and leaves you feeling richer! There is no one as strong as a person whose heart is always filled with gratitude. (Daisaku Ikeda)
Corruptopolis; Enough is Enough! board game satirizes ‘sleazy’ Spanish politicians A Spanish student has turned the misadventures of the country’s less than scrupulous political elite into a board game called Corruptopolis, where the aim is to lie and cheat your way to the gold-paved roads of “Corrupt City.” Bribes, embezzlement, tax fraud and corruption of every flavour has become a regular staple of Spanish life, with ¡Ya basta! – ‘Enough is enough!” – becoming a rallying cry for many. For 22-year-old Marina Belda, the best way to teach her compatriots about dirty dealing politicians in Spain was to make it fun. The result was the board game “Corruptopolis,” or “Corrupt City.” To get ahead, players working in teams answer questions about major corruption scandals to have rocked Spain over the years, taking on the roles of figures involved. The scandals include a real life criminal investigation named after the Nin-
tendo game Pokémon. Operation Pokémon, ironically, was a police operation launched to stamp out corruption among Spain’s political ranks. But in Corruptopolis, rather than stopping dirty politicians in their tracks, you join their ranks to “discover for yourself” their “patterns of behaviour.” “Various ironic situations will lead you down the path of corruption, where you’ll have to show just how deft you are in such affairs,” a YouTube ad for the game says. For those who prove themselves deft dirty dealers, they’ll successfully make their way back to Corrupt City. The Local reported that Belda was inspired to create the game by near-weekly corruption cases hitting the Spanish headlines. She is now using the crowd funding website Verkami to legitimately scrape together the funds she needs to begin a limited run of Corruptopolis. So far, she’s raised over 1,300€ ($1,600) of her 6,500€ target. The game could not come around
at a more opportune time. Last week, Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy apologized to the country over a series of corruption scandals that have rocked his ruling People's Party. "I apologize in the name of the People’s Party to all Spaniards for having appointed people to positions who weren't worthy of them and who seem to have taken advantage of them," Reuters cited Rajoy as telling Spain's Senate. His apology came on the same day that former Interior Minister and People’s Party general secretary Angel Acebes in the High Court over allegations his part had run a slush fund. According to Berlin-based Transparency International, Spain was ranked 40th out of 177 countries in its most recent corruption perceptions ranking. Spain’s fall in the rankings over the previous year was greater than every other country on the list, with the exception of wartorn Syria. https://www.facebook.com/ pages/Corruptopolis

Champions Retain Title! Jack Wharrie In what has been another exhilarating season for the Ibizan Pool League we have come full circle with our champions from last season taking the crown again. The winners, Boulevard A, reigned supreme over the other teams taking 15 wins out of a possible 18 and notching up 53 points along the way. We had a boom of new blood at the start of the league as several new teams joined us for winter nighttime action: Stevie D's entered Stevie Chicks. Storeroom were welcomed in, while also giving a home to the Sun and Moon team, who later became the Storeroom Knights. The Fisherman's returned as The Fish and Father Jacks doubled Figueretas' entrants by adding Papa Jacks, who unfortunately had to exit the competition early on due to a lack of numbers. While the previous teams entered the fray plenty of veterans held strong: the two Smugglers teams remained full of banter, one embracing the motto "Death or Glory" while the other fought with them every step of the way. Both Ibiza Piratas teams returned in their new venue of choice. Boulevard and The Ship Inn rebuilt on last season coming so close yet so far to taking the crown. Each and every team, whether old or new, novice or expert, came to play and enjoy some nights out during the down time of the island.
A change in our s y s t e m brought an added flair to the competition, meaning every game could have the importance of winning points for a team and keeping the excitement alive in a match up until the final frame. A change that showed it's worth as we had more games than ever going down to the wire, ending in relief as a team regained a vital point, in glory as a team emerged victorious from a 4-4 stalemate or in pride as a team thrashed their opponents to gain a crucial advantage over their rivals. With the changes made and the teams sorted all that remained was to play, although we had a couple of disagreements, everyone had a good time and enjoyed the banter and laughter that the league aims to bring. A few surprise events cropped up along the way too: talks and jokes of conspiracy erupted after a 9-0 in the Boulevard derby, a
www.theibizan.com
food fi ght erupted between members of the Chicks and the Knights, a 7-balling to The Ship Inn's Darren Hanna by a 10 year old and an old German gave a commentary over some scandalous events, and these were just a handful of the highlights that give this league it's spark and keeps people coming back winter after winter. In closing, congratulations to Captain Danny Sarah, Vicente Arabi, Danny Graham, Jose Mena, Charlie Tatman, Tomas Sanchez, Marc Herrod, Jonas Rubio, Manolo Rubio and Javi Sala Saldaña for their second victorious league. Do you want to join us next winter?. For information on joining the league either as an individual player or full team, please contact the Ibizan, or join our facebook group.

Jezza’s Sports Report ... Jeremy Parmenter Hi, there, sports fans,
Horse Racing
And all the plaudits this week must go to racing legend Irishman A P McCoy who retired on Saturday at Sandown in front of 18,000 spectators, and what a shame that his last two races in a 25 year career didn't produce a winner. Nevertheless, having run his first race at Dublin Sept 1st, 1990 and being CJ for the last 20 years, a feat that will never be repeated let alone beaten, he deserves a long rest and we wish him all the best for the future.
Golf
Congrats to two Brits this week as Lee Westwood won the Indonesian Masters in Jakarta and Justin Rose birdied the last two holes to win the New Orleans Classic in Louisiana by a stroke.
Football
In the Champions League, the Quarterfinals were completed and at least I got 3 out of the 4 right, as Barça, Real Madrid, Bayern and Juventus went thru' to the Semis and with the two Spanish giants being kept apart, with Bayern manager Pep Guardiola now hoping to put one over on his old Catalan club and Real taking on Juve, could we have an all-Spanish Final in Berlin? Let's hope so! In the Championship congrats to Watford who secured one of the two automatic promotion places after their 2-0 win at Brighton leaving Middlesboro', 4-3 losers at Fulham and Bournemouth, who play their game in hand Monday night, tied on 84 pts. With a game to go Norwich are definitely in the playoffs and any 3 of Ipswich, Derby and Brentford will fight it out this Saturday. In the PL, leaders Chelsea took another step towards their first title since 2010 as they now need 5 points from their last 5 matches, as they drew 0-0 with Arsenal at The Emirates, who dropped to 3rd after Manchester City's win at home over FA Cup finalists Aston Villa, while United suffered a setback as they dropped to 4th, after losing 3-0 at Everton. Going back to the Emirates, the Arsenal fans certainly
showed their class as they chanted “Boring Chelsea”, but, interestingly, the Blues have scored more goals, only two behind Man City, and conceded less, only 26 from 33 games with the best defence together with Southampton, so you guys, get yer facts straight. Brilliant riposte from Jose tho' as he said it must be more boring to have not won the Premier in 10 years. Nuff said! At the bottom, what about Leicester as they continue to perform “The Great Escape” as, having been bottom for 6 months, with 4 consecutive wins, culminating in the w/ end's 1-0 win at Burnley, who, incidentally, now prop up the table, they are now out of the danger zone but still not safe. Sunderland, meanwhile, drew 1-1 at Stoke, and have now dropped in to it and altho' a point behind the Foxes they seriously need to get their act together and pronto! Hull are still very much in danger as they share 31 pts with Leicester despite their surprising 2-0 win at Crystal Palace but at least they are heading up rather than down while QPR are looking like certs after their scoreless draw at home to West Ham as they're now 4 points from safety but with 4 games to go things can change dramatically, so don't give up hope yet! After Liverpool's scoreless draw at West Bromwich they have almost given up on a CL place, now being 7 pts behind Man U, so the race for that final Europa League spot is hotting up between them, Tottenham and Southampton with only un point separating the 3. And as for the mid-table comfort-zone, Swansea rested their case with a 3-2 away win at out-of-sorts Newcastle, who are fast becoming the league's whipping boys, having lost 7 on the bounce and are now flirting with danger, being only 4 points off the relegation places. Off the pitch, congrats to both Chelsea's Eden Hazard as he was voted the PFA's Player of the Year in London, and Spurs' Harry Kane, voted Young Player of the Year and a double whammy for the Blues as their Ji So-yun won the Women's Player of the Year. Even further accolades to the team from Stam-

Rugby Union
With two games to go, the top 4 in the Premiership, Northampton, Bath, Saracens and Leicester were looking to cement their places for the end-of-season play-offs, and altho' the top 2 look fairly certain, after respective wins over Saracens and London Irish, Wasps and Exeter could still gatecrash the party, as there are only 5 points, ie. a bonus point win, between the 4. Elsewhere, relegated London Wesh, with one point from the whole season, and that a bonus one at that so played 20, lost 20 for them, while European Challenge Cup finalists Gloucester shared 82 pts at Newcastle but came out 2 ahead, and Sale lost at home to Harlequins, also by the odd 2 in a 48 pointer.
Rugby League
What a surprise in the Super League as leaders Leeds lost out 29-10 to Warrington for only their second loss of the season while St Helens, in 2nd and Wigan in 3rd, made up ground with wins over Widnes and Wakefield respectively. Elsewhere, Castleford beat Salford, Catalans beat Hull KR and Huddersfield beat Hull.
Cricket
I've kept the best 'til last! OMG Twice! As England would you believe won their first away Test match for 3 years on Saturday, beating the Windies by a massive 9 wickets on the last day of the 2nd Test in Grenada to take a 1-0 lead in their 3 Test tour. And I really do hate to say this, but I told you so as Captain Cook came good, scoring over 130 runs and putting on a +100 run partnership with under pressure Trott, so please you critics in England's “Shut the **** up!” and leave them alone. Brilliant match for England's Jimmy Anderson as not only did he take 7 wickets, but also 3 catches and a run-out, and to Joe Root who continued his superb form with an unbeaten 182. Roll on Barbados later this week! That's it for this week but afore I do go, watch out for the big World Boxing Match on Friday, as two of the best pound-for-pound fighters the world has ever seen, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jnr, go head to head for the first, and probably last time in Vegas, US of A! Until next week, Jezza

Ibiza Cricket Club ... vs York St John C.C. (Est.1843) Robin Parmenter
18/4/15 35 overs. Ibiza 181/5 beat York St John 108 all out by 73 runs. Ibiza batted first and confidently with steady scoring from Martin Cooper (25), Sam Feasey (39), Pete Essex (36) and Andy Davies (39). This plus some useful extras from the visitors allowed them to reach 181/5 against a young and enthusiastic bowling attack from the Northern University students. Bowlers Conrad Bratton (2/37) and Sam Thomas (2/28) had the most success with Jacob Smith contributing one wicket and bruising yours truly a couple of times with his pace. York St John then batted cautiously to see how to play the unfamiliar pitch, while Ibiza maintained scoreboard pressure with alert fielding and accurate bowling, which was good to see from the local players as they adapt to the new ground. At the halfway stage, the visitors were on 66/3 needing another 116 runs off 17 overs, with the required run rate climbing. Once their top scorer Sam Scully (35) was out, only Jacob Smith reached double figures with 16, so that when skipper Joe Broomfield lost his wicket early on, the rest of the innings crumbled, York St John managing 108 all out in 27 overs. Of the Ibiza bowlers, skipper Graham Boe (4/14) and Robin Parmenter (3/27) stood out, with the
early pressure being applied by Paul Cruttwell, Pete Essex and Mike Amos with a wicket each.
19/4/15 20 overs York St John C.C. 133/4 beat Ibiza C.C 107/6 by 26 runs. This time York St John started first and were obviously intent on scoring more rapidly than the day before, building a rapid 78 run stand, thanks to openers Sam Scully (37) and Joe Broomfield (57). Even when they were out, Charlie Lambert (14 not out) maintained the scoring rate to finish the visitors' innings on 133/4. Ibiza bowlers Mike Amos (2/19) and Robin Parmenter (2/13) took the wickets to fall, but as is often the case, a couple of catches were dropped, allowing the visitors to set a competitive target for the shorter version of the game. Nevertheless, Ibiza started the chase well, and were above the required run rate at 69/1 off 10 overs, thanks to useful cameos from skipper Graham Boe (29) and Pete Essex (24). But when both lost their wickets in quick succession, the momentum was lost and Ibiza were unable to maintain the same run rate, ending tamely on 107/6. The visitors' bowling and fielding was tight, with no catches being dropped, and Sam Thomas (2/26) and "KP" Pritchard (2/19) being hard to score off in the final overs. Jacob Smith and Joe Broomfield contributed a wicket each. Thus another touring side has

Sport visited the new Ibiza cricket pitch at the Polo club, San Lorenzo, and judging from the comments and sporting games of cricket played over the weekend, thoroughly enjoyed their trip. Many thanks to the organiser and player from York St Johns, Will Brittan for bringing them over and we look forward to seeing them back.

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces men are your good friends and allies. AQUARIUS – Four of Cups A tempting opportunity is on offer; however, you would be wise to wait for a while before making a commitment. Something better is on the horizon which may be more to your liking; so don’t make hasty decisions that you'll regret later. This is especially so regarding your closest relationships; are you fully committed or just going along with a situation? PISCES – The World You’re beginning a new cycle in life which indicates personal success; you’re firing on all cylinders. Having worked hard and gone through the ‘apprenticeship’ stage, you’re now the ‘master’ of your world. It’s all piecing together rather nicely. Postbag … Un Año Mas We knew they were coming! In March everyone was talking about it! Well, they came last year and thankfully they come every year! The furious scraping, cleaning and painting started in March that by April turned into a modest panic, so as to be ready in time for their arrival at the Bars and Café’s. Samana Santa led to a lull and all asked “when do the direct flights begin?” then just when we all relaxed they were here in their hundreds, Turistas, filling the pavements with their slow gait all of a certain age this time of year and many with walking sticks that strangely seem to have a life of their own and certainly not under the control of the hands that held them! No longer can we expect to sit in our usual seats at the Bars, etc. and the sound of “two pints of larger” show they take no prisoners in terms of the local speak. Have you noticed? The men are all dressed the same: lurid football shirt, shorts and always new white socks

and trainers. Why? Is there some special internet site they use? I just wish that if this Island really wished to raise the tourist image the bars and cafeterias could do all a favour by requiring customers to wear a shirt, I for one refuse to sit at a chair where the previous occupant has deposited body fluids upon the chair… Why do they do this? Do not misunderstand me. Bless all the tourists the economy of this Island needs their custom and they are all welcome. Another Juan (Name Supplied)

Night Scents
John Hitchin The night garden is a place of pleasure and relaxation for many. There is an obvious connection between having dinner or a few drinks around the pool to relaxation, as well as the peace and tranquillity that can be found once the sun has gone down. There is also the affect on mood that plants can have in the evening, one of the main things being scent. The citronella more commonly known as lemon geranium gives off more scent in the evening especially if it is sprayed with a fine mist of water. This plant also has the added attraction of being able to repel mosquito's as they do not like the smell of lemon. Some of the other scented plants have a stronger smell at night. Honeysuckle, jasmine, nictoniana slyvestris (part of the nicotine family) verbena, budlelia davidii and the evening primrose flower. One of the plants with the strongest night scent is known in Ibiza as the Dame de Noche which is called cestrum nocturnum in Latin. It is an evergreen shrub that can grow to about 4 meters. It is part of the solanaceae family (the potato family). The flowers are some what disappointing as they are quite small. It has a small berry that develops after flowering. They are quite easy to cultivate so well worth the effort because of scent and will do best in a light too sandy soil which will retain some moisture. They prefer a soil with a neutral PH value. Pruning the dame de noche is quite easy as it can be cut back to about one meter above the ground in the autumn. This will en-

Back Garden
Evening Primrose Flower courage vigorous growth in the spring and more flowers than if not pruned at all. They are easy to train along walls simply by tying back to wires or trellis. Unfortunately some people are allergic to their scent which can cause problems with breathing after inhalation. Ingesting this plant may also cause symptoms of fever. The brugmansia is another plant that has a much stronger scent at night. This is the shrub that has large trumpet shaped flowers about 6 inches long that hang from its branches this plant is often mistaken for a datura which has the same flowers but they stand upright and do not grow as high as the brugmansia which can grow to two or three meters tall. Wisteria’s also thrive in Ibiza. Famed for their abundant flowers, the wisteria is best trained over a pergola or against a wall, but always
best near seating to enjoy it’s wonderful aroma which is again is stronger in the evening. An Ibiza garden, planned for night time use with careful thought about lighting and planting will be well used in the summer months. Positioning mosquito netted hammocks and beds in proximity to your scented plants can give the best night’s sleep imaginable, and all without the need for unhealthy air conditioners. Plan your garden for scent and reap the rewards long after the darkness of night has masked the visual beauty of your plants and flowers. Beekeeping for Beginners
Budlelia Davidii
The Consell de Ibiza have launched a beekeeping course designed to teach complete novices how to maintain a thriving hive, and how to do so safely. Of course such a course is not without it’s rewards and full consideration is given to the subject of your honey harvest. The introductory course runs on Saturdays from 9.30pm to approximately 2pm and is based on the estate Can Marines (on the Santa Eulalia to San Carlos road at km1). The training will be delivered by experienced beekeeper Lladó Gregory alongside veterinarian Stephen Miràngels. The course will continue until November with sessions held one Saturday a
