Illegal tourist rental sector to be tackled with Balearic flying squad of inspectors. Fines of 4,000 to 400,000 euros for those found flouting the law. Vice President calls for illegal renting to become a social issue with Landlords ashamed to rent illegally. Consell Vice President Viviana De Sans presented details of what she described as a “high impact campaign” to eradicate Ibiza’s illegal/unregistered tourist rental sector that is considered the root cause responsible for the shortage of affordable all year housing on the island. Using last summer’s campaign against illegal employment as an example, Sans said the initiative will include inspectors from all of the Balearic islands descending on Ibiza to implement the regulations that include fines ranging from 4000€ – 400,000€ for those found in breach of the regulations. The vice president, who also heads the Consell housing department, explained that the objective was to put landlords in no doubt that the risk of heavy penalties was sufficiently high that it is in their own interests to cease unregistered tourist letting and instead offer their proper(Continued on page 2)

One property owner said they had already made the move to annual renting, but not as a reaction to the Government threats, having based their decision on entirely economic reasons. “I'm renting my own apartment all year round rather than weekly as its so much less hassle and annual rents are now so high now that it makes sense. Inaugural Meeting of Housing Bureau
Though the issue of illegal tourist letting is the most high profile issue, the Housing Bureau are looking to tackle a raft of issues that go to make up Ibiza’s housing crisis.
Ibiza Consell says it has taken “a step forward in our commitment to respond to the problem of limited access to housing in Ibiza.” Earlier this week the first meeting of the Ibiza’s newly formed housing bureau was held with the aim of reaching agreement on the prioritisation of issues which must be addressed to resolve the Island’s housing crisis. The meeting was attended by representatives from all municipalities, residents representative groups, charities, banks and other business associations. “The aim is to find solutions to problems that are reaching intolerable levels," said the Deputy Prime and Minister responsible for Housing, Viviana Sans, who chaired the meeting of the Bureau, winged by the insular director of Tourism, Vicent Ferrer Torres, and director of the Housing bureau IBAVI, Lucía Prats. According to Viviana Sans, the goal is to "gather all the sectors involved to share the work that can be undertaken to address the problem comprehensively." Later the vice president said she was very satisfied with the meeting and the "willingness of all parties to find solutions." The Committee agreed to create working groups based on specific problems. On Friday there will be a meeting between the Council of Social Services, Office of Housing, councils and social organizations to coordinate responses to urgent care situations and establish protocols for action involving all levels of government. Eviction prevention
It was also decided to create a working group between PAH (residents affected by mortgages) and banks to prevent evictions caused by economic reasons when people or families cannot cope with their mortgage. Those attending the Bureau agreed to create a legal group which will make proposals on the future of the Balearic Housing Act to deal with the specific problems affecting Ibiza rental prices which are hugely inflated due to both legal and illegal letting to the tourist sector, in addition to policing the illegal supply (reported extensively on page 1 and 2) Renovation subsidies
It was also agreed to create awareness campaigns to increase the stock of social rents. The IBAVI has a program of subsidies for housing renovations which can be granted in exchange for agreement on the landlord then offering the property at a low rent for an agreed period.

Image & Sound Archive Old Photo Campaign
Ibiza Consell’s Image and Sound Archive have launched a campaign under the slogan 'Rebuilding our History'. The aim is to collect old photographs of Ibiza that are in private hands. The archive promises to return the original photograph to the owner after they have scanned the image, but the person making the submission will be asked to give over publication and usage rights to the photograph to be used in any cultural activity and possible publication of catalogues or books on the history and culture of Ibiza. "It is important that those who give their photos state what the subject matter is, who took the photograph and the year it was taken," said the director of the Archive, Lina Sansano. Alongside the launch of this new campaign, the Image and Sound Archive has presented details of its activities for 2016. Their total budget amounts to 96,800 euros, a significant increase from the 26,366 euros spent 2015. This budget increase will continue and accelerate the task of sorting and cataloguing documentation including the extensive archives of Josep Maria Bassols and José Buil Mayral, the latter’s work alone approaching some 80,000 images. Anybody interested in Old Photographs of Ibiza may wish to join the Facebook group, “Fotos Eivissa antiga -

Meanwhile Azilef Speers pointed out that wearing a bikini could be problematic in 1950s Ibiza. “My mum was given a 2.50 Peseta fine for wearing a bikini on Casteldefels beach. In those days 2.50 pesetas was a small pink note about the size of a fag packet.” https://www.facebook.com/groups/fotoseivissaantiga

Authentic Irish Stew
In honour of St Patrick’s Day we bring you a recipe for Irish Stew from the welovedonegal.com website—that should give some degree of authenticity!
TRADITIONAL IRISH STEW
Our recipe is as near as possible to what the original Irish Stew would have been. If you follow this recipe you will have a hearty, unctuous stew. Don't fret about which vegetables to add ~ if you don't have leeks use onions, if you don't have carrots leave them out altogether. If you have some turnip cut it into cubes and add it before the potatoes. Remember, Irish Stew was a peasant dish and those people didn't have the luxury of being culinary purists or food snobs ~ they were simply making the most of what was available to survive.
INGREDIENTS (Makes enough for approx 6-8 people)
1kg/2 lbs mutton (neck) fat removed and cut into 1" cubes (Alternatively 6 to 8 shoulder of lamb chops) 8 medium sized potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters and set aside in bowl of water 2 handfuls of barley, rinsed under cold water 6 carrots, peeled and cut into thick slices 3 leeks, cut into medium slices 1 large onion, peeled and cut into small cubes Salt and pepper if desired A little oil for frying off the meat 4 potatoes for thickening (peel, boil and mash) A large handful of parsley, washed, dried and finely chopped Two and a half pints (1.25 litres) of homemade Lamb Stock or two and half pints (1.25 litres) of chicken or vegetable stock
SECRET TO THICKEN THE STEW
The chunks of potatoes and the barley will thicken the stew somewhat and to thicken it further towards the end of cooking you could use a teaspoon of cornflour but a much better way is separately boil 4 potatoes. Once cooked, mash thoroughly and add to the stew about 20 minutes before it is ready. This will thicken it up naturally and very well.
METHOD
1. Heat the stock in the large saucepan and keep simmering gently once heated and add the barley 2. If not already in cubes, cut the meat into one inch cubes 3. Rinse the meat under a cold running tap to remove any blood (and cut down on scum gathering on the top of the stew) and dry using kitchen paper 3. Heat the frying pan and once hot, add the oil 4. Add one third of the cubed mutton/lamb to the pan and brown. Only add this amount at a time or the meat will not brown to seal and preserve the flavour of the meat 5. Add the first browned meat cubes to the hot stock and repeat until all the meat is browned 6. Re-heat the frying pan and add a little more oil and add the chopped onion and fry for a few minutes without browning and add to the saucepan 7. Ladle a few scoops of stock onto the frying pan and move around with your wooden spoon to make sure you get all the

tasty bits left behind after the frying. Add back to the stew 8. Place the lid on the saucepan and simmer the meat and the chopped onion very gently for 2 and a half hours. Stir every half hour or so to make sure nothing is sticking to the bottom of the pan. If it is starting to stick, turn the heat down lower again. During the course of cooking if any scum appears on the top of the stew simply skim off using the ladle and discard 9. After 2 and a half hours add in the chopped carrots, turn up the heat and cook for a further 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure it is not sticking 10. Add the mashed potato (to thicken the stew) 11. Add the cut leeks and quartered potato chunks. Cook for 15 minutes, stir occasionally to make sure it is not sticking 12. Take out a bit of the meat ~ it should be almost meltingly tender at this stage which means it is ready 13. Finally add salt and pepper to taste and serve in big bowls, sprinkling first with some finely chopped parsley. You will need a fork and a spoon to eat your Irish Stew
LAMB STOCK
While it is not strictly necessary to make your own stock, if you do have the time it is certainly worth the extra effort. Yes, it is time consuming and a lengthy process but it can be frozen and therefore made in advance of the time you will be making the Irish Stew. Added to that, your kitchen will be filled with the most fabulous aromas during cooking!
INGREDIENTS
~ Approximately 1kilo2lb of lamb bones ~2 large onions, unpeeled and chopped in half length ways ~2 large carrots, peeled and cut into quarters ~2 stalks of celery, washed and left uncut ~6-10 black peppercorns and 2 bay leaves ~ 3 litres/5 pints of boiling water
METHOD
1. Heat the oven to 190c/375f 2. Once hot, place lamb bones on a tray and put in oven 3. Once bones start to brown add vegetables to tray 4. When bones & vegetables are browned remove from oven 5. Lift bones and vegetables off the tray and into saucepan. 6. Put the 3 litres/5 pints of boiling water into the pan and add the peppercorns and bay leaves 7. Simmer gently, on the lowest heat possible, with the lid for an hour, then remove the lid and simmer for a further 2 hours. Throughout this simmering period, ladle off any scum that gathers on the top of the liquid and discard 8. Leave to cool and put in the fridge overnight 9. In the morning lift off the hard fat that will have formed on the top of the stock and discard 10. Place the sieve or colander over the bowl and move the stock from the pot with a ladle and then finally tip the remainder into the sieve/colander. Discard all the used vegetables. 11. Wash the saucepan to remove any remainder of fat and wash the sieve. Place the sieve over the clean saucepan, line with two sheets of kitchen paper laid across the sieve and ladle the strained stock back through this. This will remove more fat. Your stock is now ready for cooking or freezing

Ibiza in March to Berlin
Ibiza has stepped up its promotion in Germany in an effort to recover the 41,000 tourists it lost in 2015 compared to the previous season.
Jet 2 Increase Ibiza Seats by 21% & Extend Service to October 25th
“This is going to be our biggest and best season yet, giving our customers unrivalled choice, value and flexibility when it comes to holidaying on this iconic island.” Details of the new flights added for 2016:
⇒
Belfast International – four new flights with season extended until 23rd October 2016. East Midlands – two new flights with the Tuesday flight now starting two weeks earlier on 17th May 2016. Edinburgh – 10 new flights with a second Sunday flight added from 3rd July – 4th September 2016. Glasgow – 3 new flights with season extended until 23rd October 2016. Leeds Bradford – seven new flights with the Tuesday flight starting three weeks earlier on 10th May 2016 and the Saturday flight extended to 22nd October 2016. Manchester – nine new flights with the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and second Sunday flights starting a week earlier and the Tuesday flights also extended to 25th October 2016. Newcastle – six new flights with the Saturday flights starting three weeks earlier on 7th May 2016 and extended to 22nd October 2016.
Jet2.com and Jet2holidays have a strong presence in the Ibiza market and this week announced a total of 41 new flights from Belfast International, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Newcastle Airports. In a further move which is bound to cause considerable interest in the tourist sector, they have extended their flight season to 25th October. Several flights will also be starting earlier in May. This will be seen as a move in the right direction of extending what has become a very short summer season relying heavily on the even shorter nightclub season. Jet 2 will now be offering a total of 320,000 seats, up 21% on 2015. Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: “Ibiza is one of our most successful destinations which grows in popularity every year. There is a huge demand which is why we have expanded our programme even further, making us the biggest operator of weekly flights at each of our UK airports.

New elections needed if pact negotiations fail to find a Government
King Felipe VI will not hold further meetings with Spain’s political leaders aimed at inviting one of them to form a government. His announcement on Monday comes following Socialist Party candidate Pedro Sánchez’s failure to win two investiture votes in Congress last week. In a press release issued by the Royal Household, it was stated that the king will not begin new meetings “for the present time.” A two-month period of negotiations has now begun, which will be followed by new elections if no cross-party deal is reached The document goes on to say that the decision was taken to “allow the political parties to take the steps that they believe to be necessary” in a bid to reach deals to form a government. The king called on congressional speaker Patxi López, of the Socialist Party, to communicate the decision to the political
groups. General elections on December 20th 2015 were inconclusive, with the incumbent Popular Party (PP) winning most seats in Congress but falling far short of the majority needed to form a government. Its leader, acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, turned down an invitation from the king to stand in the investiture vote, on the basis that his party did not have the votes to be successful. PSOE chief Pedro Sánchez, however, did accept the king’s invitation, leading to a deal with emerging centre -right group Ciudadanos to try to form a minority government. The coalition of what have been termed unlikely bedfellows saw their bid to lead Spain fail, with Sánchez falling well short of the absolute majority needed for victory in the first vote in Congress on Wednesday, and the simple majority required in the second poll on Friday evening. A two-month period of negotiations has now begun, which will be followed by new elections if no cross-party deal is reached.

Consell replace the official car for a 100% electric vehicle.
President of Ibiza, Vicente Torres, now gets around using the Consell’s new 100% electric car, which replaces the previous petrol car which will be reserved for the transfer of officials visiting the island. The battery powered car is a Renault Zoe costing just under 26,000€. It has a range of 140 km— provided it is driven at a moderate speed and without heating or aircon—not an enviable prospect in an Ibizan August and perhaps the reason behind the Presidents rather ’uncommitted’ expression in this officially released photograph. The Consell says it wants to boost the use of clean energy alternatives and promote sustainable mobility. Although the prices of such vehicles are still high compared to other similar utilities, the governing body said they must see themselves as “leading by example” in a sector that is on the rise and in the future will play a very important role. The Consell also has plans to purchase two more electric vehicles, a general purpose utility vehicle and a van.
What do you mean I can’t use the aircon?
Ibiza is bringing out its big guns for the International Tourism Fair in Berlin (ITB), which runs from the 9th to 13th March, with the aim of recovering the German tourism which was down by 41,000 visitors in 2015, according to the number of passenger arrivals at the airport. The chairman of the Ibiza Tourism Promotion Foundation, Vicent Torres, announced the participation of the island at the ITB in a ceremony accompanied by the insular director of Tourism, Vicent Ferrer Torres and councillors of Tourism from throughout the island. The president explained that this winter has been spent reinforcing the promotion of tourism in Germany, increasing the Foundation's activities, especially those related presentations to travel agents. “German tourism is very important as it involves large volumes of quality tourism”, said the president.
Ibiza will attend the fair with its own stand of 50 square meters. There will also be a promotion area for Ibiza’s LGTB (Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Bisexual) tourism. Also at the stand of ‘Turespaña Ibiza’ throughout the weekend will be a representation of the hippie market Las Dalias, with the Ministry feeling it will attract the German Public. The ITB Berlin is one of the three largest trade fairs to promote tourism in Europe, along with London and Madrid.

Until the dog can do it himself
San Antonio town hall has joined forces with the local police in an effort to rid its streets of dog excrement. New posters have been put in what are considered the worst areas to deter pet owners from “leaving it behind”. The image of a dog cleaning up after itself with words along the lines of “until the dog can do it himself, you have to” may be humorous but the penalty for not cleaning up after your dog can be as much as 300€. The Town Hall is also in the process of installing a ‘pipican’ in the centre to assist owners in keeping the streets clean.

As shown in our graph below, the percentage of waste sorted for recycling varies considerably around the island. Formentera leads the way at 21.5% with San Antonio in the rear with a dismal 8.2% in national statistics.
San Antonio town hall has appointed ‘IDENCITY’ a company owned by former Mayor of Barcelona Jordi Hereu to plan what it describes as a “transformation of San Antonio”.
A presentation was made earlier this week on how it will deliver a plan of action that can be considered a “blueprint” to change both the tourism and urban centre of the municipality over a 15 year timespan. Speaking to the point that previous efforts in this direction have been of little success, San Antonio’s Mayor Tur said that it was important not to look to the past but to the future and that “the town needs a positive desire for change”. The Mayor went on to detail objectives as improving the town’s image and quality of life for residents and diversification of the tourist market with a view to “friendly tourism and a decent product”. Hereu, whose company has several other similar projects in progress in Spain and elsewhere, stressed that the project must be seen as “one for the city, not just for the government”. He said that success would require a political pact between all parties together with the support and involvement of the town’s population. In so far as financing is concerned, Hereu said that public and private sector funding would flow to the town “if the people demonstrate their desire for change”.
Survey Finds Corruption Remains A Major Concern For Spaniards Reported in El Pais
A new survey shows that 47.5% of Spaniards consider corruption to be the country’s second-most-pressing problem, topped only by unemployment. The February poll by the Sociology Research Center (CIS) suggests that citizen concern over corruption and fraud has jumped eight percentage points from the previous month’s survey. The new results, made public on Tuesday, find that 15.4% of respondents feel personally affected by corruption, a four-point rise over January. The lack of a new government in Spain only seems to worry 1.4% of citizens, a similar rate as those who expressed misgivings over the Catalan independence drive. Spaniards placed economic issues third on the list of the country’s top problems (25.1%), followed by politics and

Left: We’re tipping Nicole to clear up at the Stevie D’s Most Freckles and Gingerest competitions, Right: We’re sure a drink or two will be raised at Father Jacks to their logo-sake Father Ted actor Frank Kelly who died at the end of February.
Thursday March 17 is St Patrick’s Day and you can be sure that Ibiza Town’s only Irish Bar, Father Jacks in Figueretas will be the place to celebrate all things Irish on that side of the island. Opening at noon, there’ll be racing from the Cheltenham Festival during the day and ‘Paddy Oke’ (karaoke to traditional Irish songs) with Andie Fields from 6pm. Irish stew will be served and of course there’s draught Guinness, a selection of Irish whiskey’s including Jameson, Paddy and Bushmills on offer, as well as Baileys, lager, cider and everything else you would expect to help the party on its way. Plus lots of free Guinness hats and other promotional giveaways for those who want to dress up for the day and get into the party spirit. So come and join the local Irish and British community who’ll all be out in force to commemorate the tradition that is St. Patrick’s Day and partake in some good old Irish craic. alongside a range of Irish Tapas including Cabbage and Shpuds— we’re just glad we’ve seen posts from Ibiza’s Irish ex-pat community lately presenting their lack of problem with stereotyping as a positive, as it’s about to get worse. DJ Davy O’Chip (or as we’d have called him, Fried Spud) will be dying his hair ginger for the day, which should be quite a sight, and there are prizes for those suitably speckled with freckles and those of a ginger fringe—though to be fair we think our own Nicole Torres will be cleaning up on those two. St Patricks proibably isn’t the day for travelling too far from home, certainly not if driving, and so this year the folk of Santa Eulalia will be pleased to hear that the Celt Belt has extended out to their fine city with the opening of new Irish Bar Nimmos on the biggest day in the Irish Bar calander. As with every new project in Ibiza they are probably up to their armpits in that last frantic rush to get everything done, so we can’t tell you much more than that there will be live music, and of course, the craic!

Ibiza Insights, Love on the Rock Santa Gertrudis Claire B
Flower Power San Jose Claire B
One of the highlights of the San Jose fiesta is the Flower Power party, which takes place this year on Saturday March 12 from 22.00h. The whole town is decked out for the event and many of the bars on the main street will put up bars outside to cater for the mass of people that descend upon the town for the night. The party is held in the square outside the church, with live music from ‘Undercover’ playing the best rock hits and DJs Pharma and Javi Box playing the tunes. Music will be 60s/70s with a slant on pop, rock and soul, rather than dance music, which is the Ibiza norm. The church provides the backdrop and will come alive with psychedelic images projected onto the facade. Lots of people dress up for the party - it’s a great night out and one of the most fun fiesta nights in the winter calendar where island residents come out in force.
After a break for a couple of weeks, Ibiza Insights is back on Thursday March 10 with its informal weekly talks covering Ibiza’s history and culture. This week is a fascinating and never-before-heard-in-English lecture. The charismatic Ibicenco Antoni Manonelles, a local culture expert, will be giving a wonderfully insightful talk entitled ‘Love on the line: traditional courtship in the Pityusic Islands’. For those unfamiliar with the subject, courtship rituals in Ibiza and Formentera are unique in the world, encompassing a passionate mix of guns, dancing, bravado, and secret hiding places. These rituals have their roots in the most ancient of places and Antoni is an expert at bringing the subject to life. The talk will take place at 7.30pm at Bar Santa Gertrudis, next door to Bar Costa, in the large private room at the back. It's much bigger than the previous venue so will be cooler and more comfortable and there’s the usual inexpensive drinks and a great tapas menu. The talk starts at 7.30pm but it’s advisable to get there early to get a table and order in some drinks and food. The talks usually last for an hour and there’s plenty of chances to ask questions. Attendees are asked to make a 5€ donation to cover the costs of the speakers and hosting the event. Ibiza Winter Concerts The Art of Voice Palacio de Congresos
Just4you are bringing Wagner, Mahler and Strauss to Ibiza in a concert on 12th March featuring the music of romantic composers through what they describe as the “unique and exciting interpretation of Ana Vladimirova (soprano) and Elvira Ramon (piano)”.
Family Fiesta Agroturismo Sa Talaia
Kids Funktion will be holding a ‘Family Fiesta’ day on the 19th March (Spanish Fathers day) from 2pm to late at Agroturismo Sa Talaia, just outside San Antonio. The event is raising money to assist with the patient care of children and families affected by cancer here on the island. Entry is 6€ for adults and 4€ for children, which includes a free raffle ticket. A whole variety of activities will be taking place throughout the afternoon including a live Frozen show, DJ lessons for kids, bouncy castles, face painting, and Zumba for all the family and of course the raffle with some big prizes. Music will be provided by Hot Ice, The Ibizan’s own Carly Marie Sorenson and Ultima and there will be a craft and new market. So if you’re stuck for ways to celebrate Fathers Day, why not come along and lets raise some money for such a worthy cause.

Community Curious Caterpillar Messy Play Thursday 10th Mar to Wednesday 16 Mar 2016
ARIES – Ace of Cups Good news is on the way and with it a reason to celebrate. It’s a time of new beginnings and for some a birth that brings friends and family together. If you're awaiting an outcome to long running saga the indications are that you get the result you want. Emotional balance comes easy after a period of stress and vulnerability. TAURUS - The Tower Somewhere in your life, a false ideal or belief requires dismantling. This involves great courage on your part as this will have consequences in all your relationships at work and play. If you don't initiate this process, events could be taken out of your hands. The result will be the same, radical change. See this as an amazing opportunity. GEMINI – The Wheel of Fortune Remain optimistic if you’re to get the best out of this week avoid being fixed in your opinions or closed minded and be open to change. Be expansive in your thinking and you'll attract new opportunities as well as some much needed money luck. Trust that life is looking up so stay positive and keep it up the good work! CANCER - The Fool Trust is a key issue for you this week. The Fool card certainly doesn’t mean you are one; quite the opposite in fact. He’s urging you to take risks and to have self-belief. That it doesn’t matter, follow your heart and believe in your intuition. There are no wrong moves; it’s your reaction to unfolding events that makes the difference. LEO - Ten of Pentacles This card is a great indicator that your finances are on the up as you'll be attracting material rewards with insulting ease. New business ventures look to be successful so this is a great week to sign contracts and make agreements. Ambitions are about to be realised as your public love what you do. Property investments are worth looking into. VIRGO - Page of Swords If challenged, stand up for your principles or be prepared to confront those who seek to question your motives. A situation may feel like you're walking over hot coals as others around you might be oversensitive, just make sure you don’t add to the fuss! If a reasonable approach isn’t working, think don’t overreact; come back with an alternative approach. LIBRA - Five of Pentacles Someone will want to do you a favour and help with a money matter. You’ve been worrying about what to do about a financial situation; but take heart, things are about to change. Be aware of your thoughts and try not to see everything so negatively. It’s great to have a helping hand, but do something to help yourself also. SCORPIO – Two of Cups It’s love, love, love this week, as your relationships with others are both heart-warming and sincere. You find it easy to get what you want as lovers and friends are so considerate of your needs. They’re looking out for you! If a business venture has been stuck in a rut, then you can look forward to some real progress now. SAGITTARIUS - Ace of Pentacles The money wheel has come to town and has parked outside your home and you’ll finish the week feeling a lot more secure about your financial future. Opportunities come in thick and fast so make sure you make an informed decision affecting money matters. You can also think about branching out into other areas to attract the cash. Consider everything! CAPRICORN – Page of Cups Questions of loyalty arise this week; you know what you owe and to whom, especially emotionally. When it comes to personal relationships, you’ll be able to communicate your needs and desires more objectively than normal and you’re willing to see situations as they really are rather than how you'd like them. There’s good news for parents regarding a child’s progress. AQUARIUS - Eight of Swords You feel besieged this week, as if there is no way out of a certain situation. Don’t put all your stress eggs into one basket! Not everything is bleak and if you stopped struggling with problems you would find solutions. Nor can you do it alone; seek trusted advice from professionals or friends who have your best interests at heart. PISCES – Transformation A week to make some bold changes in direction, time to say goodbye to the old lifestyle & surprise others with the decisions you've made. You cannot and do not want to live life stuck in the same old rut. This of course will upset those closest to you. However you must go for change to gain personal freedom.
Carly S On a sunny Monday afternoon at a beautiful villa near Santa Gertrudis last week, Ela and I enjoyed a wonderful hour and a half of bonding, playing, getting creative and socialising with lots of other Mums and one to five year old children. It was a fantastic afternoon which she talked enthusiastically about the entire drive home. 'Curious Caterpillar' is the brainchild of Claire Ahmet, mum to five year old and one and a half year old girls, and Samantha Jane Rogan, an NNEB trained nanny, ex social services worker and mother to a twenty one year old daughter. The two of them already run White Rabbit party planning on the island, but felt there was a real gap in the market for a messy play group. 'Asenya and I used to go to a messy play in London,' Claire told me, 'And she loved it. So I decided to start one here for children to learn Thursday 14o and explore through, sensory and creative activities. It's also a great way for parents with young children to meet.' I couldn't agree with Claire more. The activities on offer, Friday 16º a n d the

set up itself, were great and I met familiar and new faces in the sunny garden. On entering the villa, we heard gentle percussive versions of nursery rhymes being piped through speakers around an enclosed, green and beautiful garden. Dotted around the garden were several tables and stations offering a variety of sensory and creative activities. A couple of easels were set up with paints and paper, as was a paper covered table holding glittery, animal and nature shaped crayons (Claire told me how she'd made these herself with her kids by melting down the remnants of old crayons, adding glitter then cooling them in moulds – genius!). On the floor was a big container of coloured rice with sieves, buckets, spades and funnels to play in it with, a big box of 'magic flour' to mould shapes from, a table holding latex gloves filled with different textures for the kids to feel and play with and a box of water bottles filled with coloured gels, glitters and beads … think colourful snow globes in a bottle! There were also some garden toys in the corner for the kids to play with. The overall atmosphere was calm and creative and the air was soon filled with the sounds of chatting parents and laughing children. Ela had great fun shaking the bottles, painting, drawing, making a hand-print bag, playing with the rice, squidging the gloves and then pushing a wheel barrow with her dollies in it around. We came away with a painting, bag and lots of happy memories! We'll certainly be going again. for 1 – 5 year olds runs every Monday from 3:30 – 5 and costs 15€ to join.

It’s Good To Talk Kate Stillman
Dear Kate I don’t think I am an alcoholic, I can go for as long as I like without needing or wanting a drink but I do find it difficult not to finish a bottle once I start and my partner has recently said that they find it uncomfortable being around me when I drink. I do get a little loud and loose some of my social graces after a few glasses of wine but do I really have a problem? I was hoping that you could put my mind at rest and help me explain to my partner that I feel ok. Thank you, WB Dear WB Thank you for your e-mail, it throws up several questions, it might be useful to think what your answers would be. Is it important if I think you have an issue with drinking? For me what is important is if you feel you have control over your relationship with alcohol. It’s not so much a case of how much or how often you drink what is important is how you manage your relationship with it, does it control you or do you control it. How does it make you feel when your partner tells you they feel uncomfortable around you? How does it make you feel that you are aware that you “loose some of your social graces”? I cannot put your mind at rest that your relationship with alcohol is OK what I can do is ask you some questions that might encourage you to consider your relationship with alcohol in a different way, and then decide if it is a healthy one or not. It might be useful for you to attend some meetings that are held in English where you can meet other people who may have some of the same questions you have or similar experiences that they wish to share. Please see the information below. I am so pleased that you have listened to your partner’s worries and took the time to write in. You seem open to exploring how you and alcohol live together at the moment and if that needs to change in the future, which is a great starting place. Warm Regards, Kate English speaking Ibiza AA +34 646 351 680 www.alcoholicos-anonimos.org http://www.aaspain.org
Postbag Water Woes Dear Editor Might it be possible to have a prominent reminder that we need to stop wasting water or see how little water we can use? The lack of rainfall on Ibiza means the wells are very low and tourist season almost here again. This shortage may affect us all as the desalination plants are not connected up yet.. I spoke to two farmers last week who might not plant crops this year as they don´t think they will grow. If we are careful about the amount of water we use, it will help would help a lot. We do not need to flush the loo after a pee (Australian say ´If its yellow, let it mellow, if its brown, flush it down´.), have lawns that use masses of water, leave taps running on full force or have baths/ showers every day. We can recycle washing up water to put on plants ...Hotels, villas, restaurants and public places could have signs asking people to be sparing with water. Perhaps if there was a prepared sign in the Ibizan that could be cut out and stuck up it would get people more aware? Thanking you very much in advance a n d looking
forward to your next edition as ever, Name & address supplied. Ed: Thank you and I would certainly agree that it is a good idea to be reminded of our precarious state in water reserves from time to time. I will think on the ‘cut out sign’ - great idea.
Quiz Call Dear Readers A reminder that the popular Wednesday night quiz at the Josmar (near San Agustin football/cricket field) is back in operation starting 8.15 pm. An additional attraction (apart from the low prices of all snacks and drink !) is the introduction of an Accumulator, so far not won. Last week´s accumulator question asked for names of Charles Dickens novels. The week before it was a geography question. Could your team have got many of these? Questions cover all aspects of general knowledge, so next week it may be your favourite. To win this you need to have attended at least 3 quizzes. Most people have already done this, so it is only fair that any future participants should not win large sums if they have not previously taken part. It costs just 1€ per person to take part in the actual quiz, and this money all goes to Age Concern. Pamela Deakin
Sabina's Dog Psychology Sabina Farnhill
Dear readers and dog lovers, today I'd like to talk about adopting a dog from the shelter, a very good idea as the dog compounds are overfull. Certain things should be considered for the future relationship between you and your new family member. Before you choose a dog, have a look at yourself and be honest with yourself when you think about your energy level and the energy you are going to expect from the dog. Do you love hiking, jogging, strolling along the promenade or are you rather a couch person ? If you don't like a lot of activity a Terrier type dog is not the right one for you and if you are not steady on your feet, don't get a puppy, rather get a small adult or old dog. When you know about your energy level, have a word with the staff of the shelter, because they can advise you, which of their dogs would match your needs. Don't make a spontanious decision, take your time, take the dog out for walks over a period of a few days to get a feeling for eachother, this is very important for the two of you because the chemistry has to be right. After a few walks you will know and be ready for an adoption. Before you introduce the dog to your house, take him for a long walk, this will reduce the high energy and excitement with the whole situation. Before you enter your premises stay calm and assertive, keep him on the lead and show him slowly the garden and then room after room in the house.
The introduction to his new home by his new packleader on the lead is very important ...
if you let him storm through your house off the lead, it would simply teach him to take over and call it his house. In other words when you are adopting a dog don't give him just a place to live, give him the necessary education and discipline he wants as a pack member. By entering your house on the lead he will understand immediately his position in the pack. When you show him his bed he must stay on the lead as well … The lead is not something to tie up the dog with, the word “lead” comes from “leading” and because you as the pack “leader” uses the lead as an extension of your arm. From day one you show him the rules, boundaries and limitations in your house, that's how it works in a pack of wolves, Dingos, wild dogs and domesticated dogs. By doing this you give him a structure to his life which he will thank you for for ever. And don't forget the # 1 rule for a happy dog and owner: 1. EXERCISE – 2. DISCIPLINE – 3. AFFECTION and only in this order, because a happy dog means a happy packleader !!!
With kind regards, Sabina

View From The Pew; Mothering Sunday Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel
The UK last Sunday had Mother’s Day. The Church of England calls the day: Mothering Sunday. I guess that each one of us from time to time has been mothering to someone or someone has been mothering to us. And for political correctness lets add – fathering! I shall never forget the time when I went through a difficult spell. It was that time of life when some men buy a Harley-Davidson! My daughter, who has her own family (husband and three daughters), drew me aside and said: “Dad, sit down and tell me all about it....” So it’s possible for even a daughter to “mother” her dad! Mothering Sunday is, I think, a better name for the day than, Mother’s Day. And so with Mothering Sunday just a few days behind us, it is a good time to think about those who have, and do, mother (and father!) us. And if you believe in God, this is a good
time to give thanks to God for them, and to ask for God’s help and wisdom. Mothering and fathering is about building. It is about building relationships, building the family, building friendships, building community and building the church community too. The Psalm for Mothering Sunday is Psalm 127: “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.” I do think that the opening sentence is crucial: “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.” Services: Sunday 13th March 10.30am at the Chapel of Loudes, Carrer Sant Jaume 85 (the main street), Santa Eularia. Shebizan Ed: We didn’t have space for Amanda’s report from the Oscars last week, so though we are playing catch up we felt it was one you wouldn’t want to miss—especially if you like a bit of a bitch. Let the meowing commence!
Oscars 2016
The ultimate Red Carpet event happened last weekend, the Oscars 2016. It was also perhaps the most controversial, due to its lack of diversity. I’m not going there as this is, after all, a fashion blog. But let’s Zip Up the good, the bad and the notso-clever when it comes to Oscars Fashion 2016. Who won and lost?
Jennifer Lawrence was a winner. Many actors are contracted to individual designers to wear their work, which is a bit boring, because we would be so much more interested in knowing what the A listers would have chosen of their own free will. However, Lawrence was dressed in Dior and when she looked in the hotel mirror prior to the show, one thought must have crossed her mind. “Flawless”.
Charlotte Riley and Tom Hardy. Losers.
All kinds of wrong here: Riley’s dress as very Dita Von Teese circa 2006, and Hardy’s goatee and sunglasses made him look as if he was checking -in on a budget airline en route to his mate’s stag do.
Julianne Winner!
Moore—
arrived in Chanel and giant Polomint earrings, looking sophisticated and beautiful. Does this woman ever age?
Lady Gaga—Loser.
Lady GaGa achieves a dubious red carpet first, with a dress with its very own camel toe. It’s technically more of a strapless jumpsuit with a train.
Brie Larson—Winner
So, Brie Larson won Best Actress and the battle for Gucci. To recap, for nonfashion people who’ve inexplicably found themselves reading this, Gucci is so hot right now. It’s the brand that the entire fashion industry is obsessed

Rachel McAdams. Loser.

Olivia Wilde. Loser!
We’ll get to the contoured cleavage and the missing bit of dress in a moment, but first let’s talk about how the bottom half of the dress is mimicking Snow White. There was the beginnings of a lamentable Disney trend at the Oscars 2016. Shall we talk about the top half of this dress now? Let’s not.
Heidi Klum, Tough One?
She loves a bit of fancy dress at Halloween. She can’t let it go at on Oscar night either - she continued the emerging Disney theme and came dressed as The Fairy Godmother from Cinderella. Undecided.
Reese Witherspoon, Loser.

Fiction
‘His Confession’ by Ibizan Fashionista, Blogger and Local Gal, Sophia Valentine.
Local author S. Valentine’s new novel, ‘His Confession’, book 1 of The Black Door Trilogy was published on the 16th February 2016. Available on all online platforms in eBook and paperback, it has already been receiving great reviews, with readers stating, ‘Badder and kinkier than Mr Grey! Get your Fifty Shades fix!’, ‘Darion is definitely another hot alpha male going on my book boyfriend list!’, ‘So addicting that I read it from cover to cover without putting it down,’ ‘Sizzling, steamy and one of the best endings ever!’ S. Valentine has been writing fiction since the age of 18, however writing took a backseat when she studied Law and worked within the legal profession for years. In 2012, she moved from England to Ibiza, where she resumed her passion of writing. Having read so many romance novels, and unable to find a character that really drew her in, like Christian Grey did for Fifty Shades fans, S. Valentine felt that she was missing out and so decided to write her own romance novel. The plot for ‘His Confession’ came when a thought popped into the writers head: ‘What if you fell for someone, then found out something about them, i.e. a dark desire, a certain lifestyle they lived, which you couldn’t comprehend. What would you do?’ Tired of BDSM fantasies, S. Valentine wanted to delve into an unfamiliar lifestyle that could rock a relationship to the core. The plot took a lot of research, where S. Valentine learnt many new things. ‘His Confession’ is about a woman, Gabriella Woods, who
“S
suspecting her fiancé is cheating on her, finds matches to a gentlemen’s club in his clothing. She visits the establishment to find out for herself. There she meets the owner, Darion Milano, daring, intriguing and unpredictable. Mistreated in her dull relationship, Gabi craves love, desire and friendship. Unable to resist, she enters the depths of Darion’s dark and mysterious lifestyle. They become the most infatuated, in love couple everybody knows…Until his confession changes everything. S. Valentine wanted the novel to be realistic. Sometimes in life, relationships aren’t straight forward, and how well can you really know a person? Can a straight-laced woman push boundaries, lose her inhibitions and be enough, alone, for the man that she loves? Or can a daring, risk-taker who lives life on the edge turn his back on everything he knows and desires for a woman he loves? Or will two polar opposites turn their back on one another? Like most authors experience, S. Valentine received rejections from agents, stating it wasn’t a ‘topic’ that they would publish. S. Valentine was desperate for someone to take a chance on a ‘taboo’ topic, to which, if they read, would see that regardless of the dark erotic nature, beneath it all is a sweet romance, with broken characters seeking solace in one another, emotional depth and a solid back-story. S. Valentine was thrilled to receive three offers from publishers, one being an imprint of the biggest publishers in the world. Her highlight has been holding the physical book in her hands, and receiving amazing reviews from readers and book bloggers. S. Valentine has recently completed ‘Her Confession,’ book 2 in the trilogy, and working on ‘Their Confession,’ book 3. She has book signings lined up in Cardiff and London, and hopes to take part in more. Her aim is to have her books stocked in stores, especially in Ibiza, as if it is something Ibiza needs, it’s more English novels!
ex Secrets and Seduction. Sophia’s protagonist is kinkier than Mr Grey”
For those that aren’t a fan of erotic romance, S. Valentine also writes contemporary fiction, amongst others, of which she will share in the near future. She has also recently completed a short story, which will part of a thriller anthology with several other authors. ‘
Chapter 1 sneak peek:
Gabi stared at the door, pensive. It was an ordinary black oak door. The gold handle gleamed under the lights of the club and a red glow emanated from the bottom, alluring her to enter. Gabi wasn’t sure whether she found it inviting, or frightening. The door was all that stood in her way, shielding her from the perilous and almost alien world beyond its wooden panel. Gabi knew if she entered, she would defy all boundaries she had ever set for herself. But if she turned and walked the other way, the sleepless nights would continue, curiosities of the unknown would drive her crazy, and worst of all, she would lose him. She watched as Darion blew out smoke from his cigar, making it swirl around him, obscuring her view for a split second. He leaned back on the velvet sofa, taking in the surroundings of his lavish club, his green eyes glittering in triumph. “Beyond that door is everything anyone could ever want to be fully satisfied.”
His Confession’ can be found on Amazon, Nook, Kobo, iBooks and other online stores soon. Also available in print at Thomas Green’s

Andy Murray in action vs Kei Nishikori during the weekend’s Davis Cup rubber v Japan
Jezza’s Sports Report ...
Rugby Union
Our Andy Murray, GB's “Man of Steel!” Tennis
Once again, thanks and congrats are due to Andy Murray, as he almost single-handedly won Team GB's Davis Cup rubber against Japan in Birmingham at the weekend. Having won his first singles match on Friday, he then joined up with bro Jamie to win the doubles to go 2-1 up and then completed the set as he defied tension and tiredness to defeat Japan's No 1 Kei Nishikori in a 4.54 hour marathon to give GB a 3-1 overall win and deem the final match unnecessary. Having looked home and hosed when leading 2 sets to love Murray allowed Kei to come back to 2 all, but, as the saying goes, when the going gets tough, the tough get going and he dregged up incredible reserves of stamina and talent to take the deciding set 6-3 and set up a Quarter Final with Serbia, Djokovic et al. Having said that, the Serbs had to pull out all the stops to beat Kazakhstan as not only did World No 1 Djokovic lose his first Davis Cup match for many years, but they only just made it, coming back from 2-1 down to win 3-2. Incidentally, I do wish the Beeb would get rid of commentator Andrew Castle as not only does he go on and on, obviously liking the sound of his own voice, but he is so patronising, treating the viewer like a 10 year old. I got so annoyed with his prattling on that I was compelled to turn over to Eurosport which was so much bet-
ter. I mean, it's not as if he even won anything during his mediocre career and as for those PPI insurance adverts, come on! Maybe even the Beeb could save some licence money by having a real cull and rid the airwaves of both he and the ubiquitous Clare Balding! Whilst on tennis, I read that Maria “the Grunter” Sharapova has called a press conference later today (Monday) with speculation that she's on the point of retirement at the grand old age of 28. Well, she doesn't exactly need the money having amassed millions since her debut 11 years ago but if true, she will be missed as not only has she won the career Grand Slam with 5 Majors but, apart from her annoying grunting, she did bring some real glamour to the game.
Cycling
Congrats too to GB at the Track World Championships in London as golden oldie, at 35, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish doubled up to deliver a grand finale, winning Gold in the Madison to add to GB's haul of 9 medals including 5 Golds to top the medal table. Congrats too to Laura Trott and fiancée Jason Kenny with the former who, at just 23, proving that she is now the outstanding rider in women's endurance track cycling as she completed her 7th world title and the latter who also won Gold.

An "earthquake" made by football fans celebrating a goal has been recorded for the first time in the UK. A University of Leicester team installed a seismometer near Leicester City's King Power stadium and reported a minor quake with a magnitude of 0.3. The tremor was attributed to a "sudden energy release" made by Foxes fans when Leonardo Ulloa scored a last-minute winner against Naaarwich, in

and in the Premiership, after last week's draw, are long time leaders Saracens beginning to lose it, especially after they lost for only the 3rd time this season, home to Northampton 20-15. Just as well then that Exeter, in 2nd, lost at Leicester, in 3rd, 31-27 as Sarries at least have kept their lead to 3 points, but with 4 pts + a bonus point on offer per game, they are now definitely catchable. Elsewhere, Wasps run came to an abrupt end as they lost 13-10 at Gloucester, Sale continued their good form with another win, 29-23 at home to Harlequins, and Bath won 25-17 at the Rec against bottom team London Irish. All eyes then on the 6 Nations this w/end with a potential title decider at Twickenham on Saturday against unbeaten Wales as England go for their 4th win out of 4 and, hopefully, their goal of a Grand Slam. Should be tasty especially as it looks as if that fit again behemoth Tuilagi could be brought in to the team to counter the powerful Welsh centres, Roberts and Davies.
Rugby League
Still only just in to the season but Widnes have taken over the lead in the Super League, albeit on points diff and having played a game more, but Warrington and Wigan continued their 100% records so far to be in 2nd and 3rd respectively after 4 matches with St Helens in 4th, 2 points behind.
Football
Oh, Claudio, Claudio! Stop your underdog labelling and just realise that the title is in your own club's
February. The event , shown by the spike at the right hand of the graph below, has been labelled the "Vardy Quake" after top scorer Jamie Vardy. A seismometer was installed by geology students, and the British Geological Survey (BGS), at Hazel Community Primary School, 500m (0.3 miles) from the King Power Stadium, as part of a project to detect earthquakes around the world. Paul Denton, a seismologist from the survey team, said "It says something about the nature of football, it's so tense and then we get four or five seconds of unexpected magic. In this case it was in the 89th minute, the game was practically over. It wasn't just a case of cheering or clapping, it was 30,000 people standing up at the same time - an awful amount of energy."
hands as the title is yours to lose, especially after last week's double headers. A draw and a 1-0 win, coupled with nearest challengers Tottenham, Arsenal and Man City losing in the midweek matches then the North Londoners dropping more points against each other on Saturday, thereby giving you a 5 point cushion, has got to be good news for your Foxes so just keep going and dream the dream! Fitting as well, as I notice that Leicester's last match is agin Chelsea at the Bridge and wouldn't it be fantastibulistic if the Tinkerman lifted the Premier League cup at the one place where he started his management in the Premier League. Elsewhere, Man City came back to form with a 4-0 thumping of surely-down -and-out Aston Villa at the Etihad to remain 4th, while West Ham continued their merry way in to 5th with a stunning 3-2 win at Everton, having been 2-0 down with only 13 minutes to go, Man U dropped to 6th as they lost 1-0 at West Brom, Liverpool climbed in to 7th with a 96th minute dubious penalty giving them a win at free-fall Crystal Palace, Stoke scored in the 85th minute to share the spoils with Chelsea at the Bridge, with Hiddink's team now top of the form table after their 12th unbeaten Premier League match and, no doubt, with their minds on Wednesday's match of the season with Paris SG in the Champions League and hoping to overturn a 2-1 deficit to go thru' to the Quarters. (Tried to get a ticket for that one but when offered one at €600, thought better of it!) To the bottom 3 now and not looking good for McLaren and Newcastle as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth (and I can't quite believe that the Wally with the Brolly is still there!), Naaarwich lost at Swansea to be a point off safety where, finally, Sunderland thought they had done enough to
beat Southampton after an 85th minute goal but then relaxed to let the Saints come back with a 93rd minute equaliser. The Europa League starts again midweek, with all 3 English sides facing difficult 1st leg matches as Tottenham are away at Dortmund, 2nd in the Bundesliga, while Liverpool contest the Battle of England against Man U at Anfield. Hmmmm, could be a tricky one, that one, to predict! 'Tis FA Cup time again at the w/end with the Quarter Finals taking place, which may be without Arsenal as they play at Hull on Tuesday in a replay from the last round with the winner taking on Watford at home on Saturday, Crystal Palace facing a tough match at Reading on Friday, likewise Chelsea at Everton on Saturday and then Man U at home to in-form West Ham, possibly the match of the round. Finally, that man Cristiano was at it again in La Liga, as he scored 4 for Real Madrid in a 7-1 hammering of Celta Vigo, even more amazing to note that Real were only 1 up at half-time! That's it for this week …Jezza Late news: Following my comment re Maria Sharapova, just heard that shock, horror, she announced that she had failed a drug test at the Australian Open. Apparently she has been taking a medically prescribed medicine for various ailments for the last 10 years, which contains a drug that has been banned since the turn of the year which she was not aware of so now she has been suspended from all tennis by the ITA while they make a decision. Good on her tho' that she has admitted it and will accept any consequences.

Property January Sales Fall Following 16 Consecutive Months of Growth The fact that the number of property purchases took a small dip in the first month of the year when compared to the same month 12 months previously is most likely nothing to worry about. According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of homes bought in January fell by 2.9% annually, registering a total of 32,417 operations. Up until this point, property purchases had registered 16 consecutive months of increases and positive figures, which is predominantly attributed to the popularity of

second-hand properties, whose prices are generally much lower. And 2015 ended with an 11.1% rise in the number of people who had bought property in Spain, reaching a total of 354,132 transactions, and two years of rising figures. Nevertheless, it is obvious that the property sector is not in trouble, as when compared to the previous month, December, house purchases recorded a growth of a massive 17.3%. This means that although not as many operations took place as a year ago, on a month-to-month basis figures are going up. The reason for the small decline in annual figures has been put down to the sluggish movement of the purchase of new builds.
In concrete, the purchase of new-build properties decreased by 28.9% in January 2016 from the year before. In actual numbers, only 6,334 new properties were sold, which is in stark comparison to the 6.6% rise in the number of re-sale property purchases, which reached a total of 26,038 transactions in January.
