San Antonio Town Hall have added a raft of further measures designed to help shift the image and reputation of the municipality away from the boozed up Brits, chips and tits that has been to some the ongoing blight and to others the lifeblood, of Ibiza’s second city. Speaking on local radio Aida Alcaraz, San An’s Minister of the Interior, said that the consumption of alcoholic

See Page 2 ... drinks in public places has always been technically forbidden, but that the law had been ignored as it was impossible to implement at a practical level due to the difficulty in ascertaining whether the drinks were “alcoholic or simple refreshments”. Despite therefore being technically an enforcement of existing regulations and not a new ban, Spanish press immediately reported the Minister’s words as a ban on public drinking. Though it was not clear from the discussion held Monday what has or will change to make this difficulty in enforcement easier in future, the Minister did talk of powers that had been historically held only by the Balearic Government now being extended to local police, though this seemed more in relation to the policing of retail drink sales – which were also banned from midnight to 8am under a recent municipal ordinance. San Antonio Ajuntamento, lead by the tripartite coalition of the PSOE, Podemos and PI, have also announced plans to ban what it groups under the heading “dynamic a d v e r t i s i n g ” . t is illegal, it is hugely and obviously visible, it has a hugely negative impact on the town, and yet it is allowed to continue unaddressed and unchecked. We do not understand why.”

End, San Antonio and much of Ibiza, there are Illegal Street Traders who have overwhelmingly strong connections to drug crimes. We can all see them, day after day, night after night. If asked to do one thing to improve the reputation and image of San Antonio, certainly based upon the level of complaints we receive, it would have to be that. In the pest control pecking order, PRs may come high on the list, but a long way behind the street criminals. Perhaps San An is just flexing its muscles before taking on that particular problem. In doing so it will need to hold its nerve. The recreation of a Town’s image will be a tough journey and some local people and businesses will suffer during the transition as the Boozy Brits have to find their chips n tits elsewhere. But does the Town really know what it wants to become? Only time will tell.

None of this matters…

includes the promotional parades held by many of the Island Nightclubs, and PRs touting for business on the streets and paseos. Outside of business owners, particularly periphery businesses reliant on attracting customers via the touting PR, it is hard to see too may people loosing sleep over their disappearance. Their constant haranguing of visitors and residents is a regular complaint received at this newspaper. However there has to be a question raised over the ban on PRs in relation to the policing of it. Anybody who knows San Antonio, Playa D’en Bossa or any other area targeting the young club going market will know that the majority of PRs are working illegally anyway. A ban on the legally issued PR licences will, unless it is followed through with enforcement action, simply drive all PR-ing underground again and be seen as a retrograde step in improving the quality of the town. Though the PRs will not be missed by many, the club parades seem a less likely target. Adding a regular splash of colour, and occasionally even a touch of class, it

is not so easy to see how they have the same molestation effect on tourists or residents. So the San Bantonio list of vacation vetos grows ever longer, but the Government remains silent, perhaps surprisingly in the clean-up context, on one issue – that of street traders and associated crime. For every complaint and negative comment we receive about San Antonio from tourists and residents, that of the problem of illegal street traders and associated crime outnumbers all others combined, and does so many times over. It is illegal, it is hugely and obviously visible, it has a hugely negative impact on the town, and yet it is allowed to continue unaddressed and unchecked. We do not understand why. That statement is not some tin-foil-hatwearing conspiracy theorist’s indication of secret agendas at play. It is a simple statement of fact. We do not understand why it is allowed to continue. At the foot of the West End every night there are prostitutes openly touting trade who also have overwhelmingly strong connections to theft crime. Throughout the West

Of course it does matter, but we do feel it appropriate to issue a timely reminder that we are now in the usual preseason/end of winter limbo land which always seems to bring forward scare stories that will, once the season is underway and we are all busy serving the tourist trade, disappear from our collective consciousness. As one prominent Spanish San Antonio business man pointed out to this newspaper during the week, all of these restrictions and regulations rely entirely upon enforcement. As the number of police in the municipality will be the same in 2016 as it was for 2015, it seems highly unlikely that there will be the capacity to enforce these regulations to the letter of the law.

Taxi Progress

Ibiza Consell and representatives of taxi drivers’ associations have reached partial agreement on the controversial proposals for a new seasonal licencing plan, according to press releases issues by the Island Government today. At a meeting held Tuesday 29th March the Minister of Planning and Transport, Pepa Marí, lead discussions focussed on the proposals for new seasonal licences however also extending into plans to combat the illegal taxi business. Councillor Mari announced that most councils have accepted some of the arguments submitted by the associations of taxi drivers. Some other concessions were given to the Taxi drivers relating to the qualifying criteria required to apply for one of the seasonal licences. So far there has been no agreement on the allocation of the seasonal licenses because the Council considers they should be divided 65% to taxi owners and 35% to employee drivers. The Taxi owners, perhaps predictably, want a bigger share of the cake considering that employee drivers should only be allocated any remaining licences not taken up by the owners. Despite this point of contention, Marino welcomed the climate of “good understanding and dialogue” going on to say, "we are laying the groundwork to reach an agreement, and through that to provide good taxi service this summer.” All parties have agreed to a new meeting to be held next week.

Amazing Effort! gibbs@theibizan.com

The generosity of Ibiza's residents including the British and Irish ex-pat community never ceases to amaze. Each and every fundraising effort is to be commended and having been involved in a few I know how much time and effort is involved. Every euro selflessly raised is gold, but perhaps it is time we give a particular round of applause to Margaret Nawaz who seems to be constantly involved in one worthy cause or another. Margaret’s fundraising skills put the rest of us to shame. Every year I double take at the amount raised at the English Church Easter Fair organised by Margaret, and true to form again this year Margaret reports a total of 4,570 euros to be donated half each to Age concern and Los Olvidados. I know there are events that raise more, but Margaret does this essentially on the back of sales of cakes, jams n bric n brac. As I understand it Margaret does not use facebook etc, and so will not be self-indulging in social media thanks. Perhaps it makes it all the more important we should give recognition to an unsung hero among us.

San Agustin Centre Reopens

What is described as a “basic health unit” at San Agustin will again become operational on April 4th following improvements to bring the small surgery up to the required standards of the Directorate of Primary Healthcare. The works cost a total of around 18,000€ and included replacement of various fixtures and fittings plus the addition of toilets, air conditioning units and redecoration. The new public opening hours will be Monday and Thursday from 12-15.00, which is one hour longer than previously.

Movistar Easter Present?

Movistar has reported improved and extended coverage of both 3G and 4G networks in various areas of the Balearics including San Jose and San Juan, areas of Ibiza and also Formentera. Movistar claim that their 3G network now covers 100% of the Balearic Islands, the highest coverage rate of any island group in Europe, and that their 4G deployment will be completed before next summer and cover 90% of the population. In seeking reaction of those using mobile services in San Juan and San Jose, we were able to find one or two people stating their service had improved, however the majority reported no noticeable difference including comments that there was still no service at all in areas close to Cala Vadella.

500€ To Live On A Balcony The Nou Diari published a report at the beginning of the week drawing attention to Ibiza’s rental property crisis with information on an offer for rental of 500€ a month to live on a balcony, 400€ for a mattress under a plastic covered terrace and 300€ for a mattress in a room without access to bathroom or kitchen. The media portal reported that the balcony offer was very quickly withdrawn by the estate agent after the first publication of the story. Their report went on to detail the work of La Plataforma de Afectados por los Alquileres de Ibiza, a Facebook group with over 7500 members aiming to assist individuals and address wider rental market issues. Group spokesperson Luis Gonzaga said “annual rentals have simply disappeared and that being asked for the season upfront is unpayable. Ibiza has become a fashionable, luxury, tourism location and over the last 4-5 years the situation has become impossible. Policemen, Doctors and other government officials who have been stationed in Ibiza have only one goal, to leave the island as soon as possible. Mostly they are forced to seek help from family and friends to cope with what is a median rental price of 1600€ per month. The situation is no better for seasonal workers, many of whom have resorted to living in their vehicles, in tents on the beach, or ATM machine kiosks.” Luis went on to detail many disturbing cases of unethical practices including many where tenants were themselves participating in unfair subletting as a means of surviving. “If your intention is to create a family home in Ibiza, it is impossible, even if you have a good job.” Following extended negotiations, 2 inspectors of Finance from the Balearic government are being moved to Ibiza to investigate cases reported by the Plataforma. Gonzaga says that they will discover a ‘mafia dedicated to money laundering’ behind some of the luxury holiday villas. Faced with desperate shortages and exorbitant prices of flats in Ibiza that are rented to residents and seasonal workers, the Ibiza Plataforma has undertaken some analytical work with the following conclusions. They say there are 1000’s of flats and apartments that have disappeared from the scope of the local population and are being offered for weeks and even days as tourist accommodation, and therefore illegal, on many websites and internet portals including TripAdvisor, Airbnb and Owners Direct. By example, they quoted that on one

website alone 911 villas and apartments were being openly offered in Ibiza as tourist accommodation that are known not to be registered as such and so openly breaking the law without fear of any sanction from the Consell. Marketing tourist accommodation without authorisation carries a penalty of up to 40,000€ as reported in last week’s Ibizan. However the group say that much of the trade is undertaken through foreign bank accounts specifically set up to circumvent Spanish controls and inspections. See also report on tenants to pay ITP tax on page 6.

Jetsetters AENA, the airport authority, has approved an extension of Ibiza’s private jet runway to 80,000m2 which will result in it being able to accommodate 58 private planes including 34 jets. The current capacity allows for only 25 jets at any one time and it is hoped the extension will allow the airport to service the envisaged demand of up to 120 private jet arrivals and departures each day during the peak season. This equates to a private jet landing or departing every 12 minutes throughout the day and night – Ed: that seems a ridiculously high amount. Press reports quoted one-way private jet flights from London to Ibiza fetching as much as 25,000€ for a single ticket. Below: Ms Hilton, in her almost unfortunately named private jet, will be one of Ibiza’s frequent flyers to welcome more availability for private jets in Ibiza.

Food & Drink With the weather telling us it is time to turn away from the hearty stews and towards the salad drawer, we thought it perfect timing for an office favourite, Danny Ortega’s Ibizan Ensalada Payesa. As simple, and as tasty, as it gets…

Ensalada payesa/ Ibicencan salad Ingredients A couple of boiled eggs - chopped Boiled potato - chopped into cubes A jar of cooked chick peas A tin of roasted red peppers chopped Spring onion - sliced A couple of fresh tomatoes chopped A good squeeze of lemon juice A good glug of olive oil Salt & Pepper

Tin of tuna (optional)

Method Some might say this is a cop out as there is no real cooking involved just some good preparation. I'm hoping it will give inspiration for the next meal you eat. It is a gorgeous and fulfilling salad to have with any grilled meat, fish or eaten on its own as a lovely supper. It also makes a great accompaniment for a BBQ. Once chopped mix all ingredients in a bowl and whilst the potatoes and eggs are still hot dress with plenty olive oil, lemon juice & season with salt and pepper to taste. ¡Bon profit!

Shebizan Special

Interview With Tony Truman, Ocean Beach

For many years, San Antonio upheld the title and reputation of ‘party capital of Ibiza – Ibiza being the party capital of the world. With the resurgence of Playa D’en Bossa on the opposite side of the island, tourists and ravers started to flock to new venues like Ushuaia, Sankeys and the many new beach clubs lining D’en Bossa’s sand. This left San An a little less in focus than usual. But there has also been a shift from night time clubbing to day time pool parties, made popular by the whole Las Vegas scene. With its enormous pool, stage and sound system, along with live entertainment and VIP and celebrity clientele, Ocean Beach has bought has added glamorous daytime clubbing to San Antonio, providing a genuine Las Vegas party vibe. It’s the success story of the last couple of years in the area. The brains behind OB is Tony Truman, along with Duane and Wayne Lineker. As I’m off to Ibiza for the Easter holidays, I thought I’d catch up with Tony and find out what Ocean Beach has planned this summer.

What does OB have in store for us this summer?

TT: Pretty much the same really. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it… We have found a nice balance within our event programming, something that caters for all. With us it’s not so much who is playing or what brand is hosting, it’s all about the daily vibe of the venue and people loving the venue and atmosphere it creates. We have a few additional promoters in this year – on Sundays – to mix it up a little. We have been looking for good promoters up and down the UK so that people from all areas of the UK get a chance to experience one of their best local

nights out from home, and doing a party in Ibiza means this format has also worked well for us the last few years.

Tony, this is your fifth season on the white isle. where do you see San Antonio as a clubbing resort, in the next five years?

TT: We have been very lucky exploiting a niche in the market with Ocean Beach. San An as a clubbing resort has been a little left behind the last few years with the big explosion happening in Bossa. This is a great shame as San An was at the forefront of clubbing on the island for so many years. I think the town now only has room for one major club and maybe Es Paradis and Eden should all become one giant super-club. This is a bit of a pipe dream – you never know stranger things have happened, but I can’t see this happening in the near future.

You’re renowned for your visual shows and performances at OB. Could it possibly be any bigger and better this year? And are you sticking to your slogan ‘we’re here to celebrate, not educate’ by avoiding the whole ‘overpaid superstar DJ’ scene? TT: Yes, very much so. This is a huge part of the business. We love creating show sand working with the entertainment team. This year we will be adding more shows to more days as we are practically sold out 7 days a week. We feel it’s important that our guests, whichever day they come, will experience the full show vibe. We won’t have the crane show everyday, but there will be a lot more additional performances with ground shows and zip wire shows all adding to the theatrical experience. If you make a place nice enough with great staff and service, plus wicked happy music at affordable prices, people will come regardless of who is playing and we are lucky to be proven right. We still like big name DJs and we like the original big name DJs, as they seem a lot more accessible nowadays and a lot more affordable. The likes of Todd Terry, Joey Negro, Brandon Block, Norman Jay and Jazzie B, the list goes on, are all very cool proper old school DJs who play to the crowd, not just playing tunes people have never heard of as they are ‘too cool for their own pants’… We like it like that. Amanda O’Riordan, with thanks to Tony Truman.

How is the fashion line doing and can we expect anything new from the range for 2016?

TT: To be honest, it’s been very hard trying to create our own range of merchandise for one reason or another and we’re still trying to get to grips with it, as we are not fashion industry people. To myself and my partners, it’s a learning curve and one we are willing to work with as we move forward. We have got about another 5 lines to add to our small merchandise collection this season so we need to just get it ‘out there’ and see what our customers think. The boutique did very well indeed last season. The best one yet, and we worked with some very cool designers on the island, who displayed their ranges, and the sales were excellent. So we were very pleased about that, as we know our clients well and exactly what suits their needs.

Ocean Beach opens the 2016 season on 29th April with a Soft Opening Party, with free entry and no cover charge on pre booked beds. Ocean then opens weekends only until the official opening party on 20th May, for which Ocean Beach promise a ‘sensory overload’. For event listings and bookings

News The ExoMars mission takes off on March 14.

Mars Set For Spanish Shocks

El Pais has reported on the European Mission to Mars, for which Spain has made some significant technical contributions.

October 2016: ExoMars, a joint European and Russian astrobiology project, has just reached its destination and is preparing for the most delicate part of the mission. The descent module Schiaparelli enters the nearly nonexistent Martian atmosphere at a speed of 21,000 km/h. The friction generates temperatures that would be hot enough to fry the spacecraft if it were not equipped with a heat shield able to withstand 1,750ºC. This shell also serves to slow the craft down. The ExoMars mission, which is costing €1.3 billion, required the development of new technologies to which seven Spanish companies have contributed Three minutes later, an enormous 12-meter-wide parachute opens. When the lander is at an altitude of around 1,200 meters, its retro-propellers kick in and slow it down almost to a stop. As the unit hovers over the Martian surface, the propellers turn off and the lander drops suddenly from two meters above ground level. And this is where the hard part begins. To ensure that the module does not land face down, rendering it useless, designers had to come up with a structure able to absorb the shock of the impact against the hard, rocky soil of Mars. “The inside of the material has a honeycomb-like structure; when it receives the impact, it crushes, which is key because that way we prevent the module from bouncing off the ground, being knocked over or thrown off course,” says Eduardo Urgoiti, air and space project director for Sener, the Spanish company that developed this and other components for ExoMars.

No hiding from the Hacienda, Tenants will soon be paying ITP Tax according to Idealista

Tenants Will Soon Be Asked to Pay ITP Tax

The last thing those renting property in Ibiza’s market of inflated prices and low quality contracts will want to hear is that the Tax man will be chasing them for more money—but if leading Spanish property portal Idealista is to be believed, that is the very real possibility looming on the horizon. Don’t panic until you have read the report, the amounts involved, whilst unwelcome, are not huge.

ITP stands for Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales, or it is better known as Transfer Tax in English, and is most often associated with the tax paid when you buy a resale property. While this tax is generally thought of to involve those purchasing a second-hand property, it actually affects rentals as well – and has done for more than 20 years. Up until very recently, however, this legality was ignored by every autonomous region and they didn’t bother with trying to collect money from those renting a property. That is now beginning to change, as a number of regional governments have started the process and chase tenants to pay their ITP. If you’re not renting at the moment, don’t think that you have been let off the hook, because Hacienda is chasing up anyone that has rented a property in the last four years. The main regions that have remembered all about the ITP and rentals and have started making tenants pay are Andalucía, Madrid and Cataluña. Idealista warns tenants in other regions not to hold their breath for too long as it may be their, our, turn soon. Tenants in those regions already collecting the tax are being hunted down by Hacienda inspectors who cross-reference various different types of computer data including applications for tax deductions for renting and personal income annual declarations. Now, while those renting a property are probably fuming right now, Hacienda believes they should actually be grateful that they haven’t decided to impose a sanction on anyone that hasn’t paid! According to the law, ignorance of a certain regulation does not excuse citizens from not meeting their obligations, and so sending out a fine would be well within Hacienda’s rights. According to examples given by Idealista, for a rental contract of 600 euro a month where the tenant has not paid the ITP tax for his three years of renting, the debt (including interest for each year of non-payment) would amount to

about 86€. Hacienda is currently in the process of sending out letters to tenants informing them of their obligation to pay the ITP, adding that if they delay in paying, extra interest will continue to be added until the debt is paid in full. It seems like there’s no getting out of paying, and the tax should be paid as quickly as possible to avoid the amount due rising.

Last Call for Payphones 88% Have never used one!

Payphones in Spain will become a thing of the past at the end of 2016 subject to a study being carried out by the Department for Industry, Energy and Tourism regarding their actual usage and the cost involved in their upkeep. With 50.7 million mobile phones in Spain and research already carried out indicating 88% of the public never having used a public payphone, it is expected the Government will agree to their departure. Spain will be joining countries like the UK, France and the Czech Republic in removing payphones due to lack of income, however there is a possibility Spain will use the old phone boxes as points to charge up electric vehicles rather than get rid of them completely. Spanish law currently states there must be one public telephone in existence for every 3,000 inhabitants for every municipality of 1,000 or more residents. They should also be available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Phone boxes must be kept lit at night, contain a certain amount of privacy and be kept away from any loud noise. An electronic screen where users can see the number they have dialled, the minimum amount of credit required and the amount of money they have left must also be incorporated.

European Space Agency rendition of ExoMars rover.

In order to create the system, it was first necessary to recreate the pressure and atmosphere found on Mars in a vacuum chamber that also contained rocks and sand similar to those on the Red Planet. The impact was rehearsed several times until the experiment reached a degree of certainty acceptable to the engineers. “There is a 99% probability that everything will go well,” explains Urgoiti. The heat shield, made of carbon fibre, was also partly designed and made in Spain, this time by Airbus. The aerospace company has developed a new production system exclusively for this component, which is crucial because “any deformation would make the lander go off course during its descent,” explains Carlos Samartín, head of composite materials at Airbus. The ExoMars mission, which is costing €1.3 billion, required the development of new technologies to which seven Spanish companies have contributed. The Schiaparelli will have a short life – two to four Martian days – because its main goal is to test the landing technology. Meanwhile, ExoMars’ second module, the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), will map methane sources on the planet. This will be the first mission able to find the sources of methane and the mechanisms by which it seeps out. “It will take a year to reach the final orbit,” says Miguel Ángel López, a researcher at the Astrophysics Institute of Andalusia (IAA). He and other scientists at the centre helped design and develop all the electronics in the Nomad gas detector, one of the four instruments aboard the TGO. Two missions – one in 2004 and another 2014 – have detected methane sources on Mars. The discovery came as a surprise, as nobody expected to find a gas that, on Earth at least, is nearly always associated with the presence of life. “This will be the first mission able to find the sources of methane and the mechanisms by which it seeps out,” explains López. The mission has suffered several major setbacks, such as the US decision to pull out, although Russia has since joined the project, allowing the European Space Agency to carry on with the plans. López says Spanish contributors to the project have also experienced problems of their own, as funding for the IAA team has been frozen since 2012.

Fish in Ibiza You’re waiting for a fishy story and 3 turn up at once. Having received reports from two government departments regarding various fishing matters, plus the news of a new species discovered, we felt it appropriate to turn to Ibiza’s Mr Fish, Peter Savage (pictured right), to ask for his input. Peter has been kind enough to provide information on the regulations applying to fishing, both from the shore and by boat which will be useful to committed anglers, however those wishing to dip their toe in the water (groan), or spend some of their holiday fishing, may wish to keep things simple and contact Peter for one of his regular fishing trips starting for the season in April. www.fishingibiza.com

A Fisherman’s Tale Peter Savage

“Many holidaymakers coming to Ibiza will have seen pictures on the internet of enormous Tuna and Swordfish , without realising that many of these photos are more than a decade old. The Mediterranean Sea around Ibiza is no different to any other Ocean or Sea anywhere in the world, it has and still is being raped by commercial fishing concerns who seem to have no regard for the future. That's the bad news the good news is there is still a lot of fun to be had in fishing the waters around Ibiza. Fishing on an individual basis requires a licence :Shore fishing

costs 25.01 Euros per person and is valid for 3 years must be carried when fishing together with Passport or ID card. Boat fishing.

For boats less than 6 metres in length Costs 45.06 Euros is valid for 3 years and ID as above must be carried. For boats more than 6 metres in length Costs 74.24 Euros is valid for 3 years an ID as above. A boat is defined strictly as a fully Spanish registered vessel therefore if registration does not start with numbers 6 or 7 you will not be able to obtain a fishing licence. Kayaks are therefore illegal to fish from but a registered jet ski may not be. I know that is a bit vague but having just this week received my copy of the policy for fishing for the Balearics it all reads just as last year, this is because before the year is out expect massive changes to both policy and the law as Spain like all other countries in the European Union is forced into compli-

ance with European Fishing Policy. Expect

Bag limits, one Bass per day, per angler. Restricted areas, to allow for protected breeding Calender limits, I know Sunday is your only day off from work but it may become illegal to fish on a Sunday and for that matter Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Obtaining Licences

Fishing licences for both individuals and boats are obtained from the Consell de Ibiza offices in Av España, Ibiza town. Goto the first floor, take a number and wait your turn.

Fisheries call for More Resources to Marine Reserves A joint meeting held between the Consell’s Minister of Environment, Miquel Vericad, and the Consell’s Minister of Rural Affairs for Formentera, Bartomeu Escandell, together with Director of Agriculture, Vicent Tur, and technicians from various departments has been held to consider proposals for action on the marine reserves shared between Ibiza and Formentera. Both islands institutions requested the Balearic government change some aspects of the fisheries regulations to adapt to the reality of the sector. They feel that the current fines for fishing infringements are too low to serve as any real deterrent and also agree on the need for a civil guard patrol boat in service throughout the year with specific responsibility in the marine reserve areas. They further issued a demand that all projects that could affect fish stocks, such as the construction of marinas, the installation of seabed cables or emissaries (sewage pipelines) first have an assessment report undertaken by the fisheries council. It was noted by both islands that a decline in fish catches has been registered and that any measures taken to protect the marine reserve areas must not involve simply shifting increased pressure on waters adjoining the protected reserves.

Fisheries Inspection Annual Report The Fisheries Inspection Service of the Consell has issued an annual report showing they carried out 701 inspections in 2015, which can be broken down as 46.8% being inspections conducted of various fishing boats both local and foreign, 27.2% as inspections of marine resources and 25.4% as issues relating to the sale of fish species at locations such as markets, restaurants and wholesalers. As a result a total of 53 acts of infringement have been pursued representing fewer than 8% of the total inspections. Of these 53 infringements it is worth noting the 83% are within the area of recreational fishing. In addition to the work of the fisheries inspection services, the Guardia Civil are pursuing 15 cases for alleged violations through their nature protection service, many of which have been undertaken in support of the fisheries inspection service. In addition to their policing and regulatory functions the fisheries inspection service have undertaken studies of various fishing data and participated in initiatives such as the labelling of Ibiza red lobster to differentiate local products and flavours.

New Fish A group of scientists from the Balearics, Croatia and Germany have discovered a new species of fish inhabiting the waters of the Balearic, Archipelago as announced by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO). The new species has been dubbed the rather unwieldly name Speleogobius Llorisi. It is a Goby belonging to the Genus Speleogobius, small in size and barely reaching 3cm in total length, it is reddish in colour which gives the fish effective camouflage in the red seaweed beds in which it lives. The discovery of this new species of fish is considered important in improving knowledge of marine biodiversity in the western Mediterranean and in particular, knowledge of the red seaweed banks as essential habitats for maintaining fish stocks and their place in the marine food chain.

Community It’s Good To Talk Thursday 31st Mar to Wednesday 6th Apr 2016 ARIES - Page of Pentacles You may find yourself at a bit of a crossroads this week Aries especially when deciding what's the best way to go about improving your finances. There may be more the one opportunity to choose from so thinking carefully about your next move. If you are undecided then wait awhile; be sure that over the next couple of months you get on the right track! TAURUS - Knight of Swords If challenged, you must stand up for your principles; don't shy away from those who try to undermine or question your motives. At times you'll feel that you're lying on a bed of nails as others can be so prickly. If you're being blocked at every turn, get creative and think outside the box to get what you want. GEMINI -Seven of Swords It's hard to be a light burning brightly, especially if you've recently been subject of other people's judgement or had criticism from those who you thought you could trust. Remember though, your inner light can never be extinguished, you just get better and better at discernment. Be careful of the company you keep and don't give up on your dreams. CANCER - Knight of Pentacles You've got your practical head on this week which is good, as wishy washy thinking gets you nowhere. You're looking for more opportunities to increase your earnings however, situations are unlikely to shift you just sit there; make a concerted effort to seek out like minded or influential people who can point you in the right direction, diversity should be your middle name this week. LEO - Justice Take care of health issues this week and finally get to grips with the right dietary life style that suits you. This card helps to bring balance to any situations that have left you feeling out of kilter recently. Matters can be resolved in a more harmonious way. For those of you that write for a living, perhaps it's time to start on an important project as your imagination/mind could improve your bank balance! VIRGO - Nine of Swords Worrying about problems won't solve them. Why not have a good talk to someone you trust, they will offer fresh insights into your situation and possibly a solution. Most concerns might never happen, so why give certain 'problems' power in your life? Avoid important financial deals until the end of the month, as all may not be what it seems. LIBRA - Two of Swords You should be feeling less upset about recent differences in opinion which can now be settled amicably. Blessed are the peace makers, as the saying goes. If you admit where you went wrong, partners or associates will be keen to kiss and make up. When emotionally upset, you more than most feel unbalanced; the week ends on a calmer note. SCORPIO - Nine of Pentacles An important relationship helps you make financial gains and new projects hold the promise of monetary gains. Keep an open mind at what's offered this week; some of which comes from a distance from your current locale. Issues around diet also preoccupy your thoughts, you're caught up with either gaining or loosing weight this week as you're very body conscious. SAGITTARIUS - Ten of Cups Extra happiness for you this week Sagittarius, you come closer to realising a personal ambition. Romantically, you attract someone a bit special so don't be tempted to stay at home; get out and about as you never know who you might meet! Well, a person who's uncomplicated for a change, you don't even need to heal/fix them; they're fine just the way they are. CAPRICORN - Queen of Cups The past has the key on how to handle a certain tricky situation, what you learned then serves you now. This cards soothing energy helps restore emotional balance; encouraging you to be authoritative in areas of life where you feel you're not being heard. You can get your point across in a gentle but firm way. Your kindness is not a weakness; just remind others of that. AQUARIUS - The High Priestess Wisdom, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. You may have to have patience with those whose wisdom you question and to stand back with the least amount of judgement as possible. Now that IS wisdom. The High Priestess gives you a seductive quality; others are drawn to you like moths to a flame, use this power wisely. PISCES - Eight of Swords There are times when we can all over analyse the situations we find ourselves in. Especially if we are faced with an important decision to be made. The agony of indecision is represented by this card a feeling of being trapped. You may be mirroring what your opposite sign Virgo is experiencing. Read what I've said for them; the same advice could be meant for you also.

Dear It’s good to talk I love(d) Ibiza, I came here with good intentions and the desire to have a better life. To start with 7 years ago it was fantastic but now I am feeling jaded and though it’s easy to blame the “new arrivals” and the excessive “VIPness” that is taking over, a big part of me feels that all of that is just change and the world moving on and rather than moan about what everyone else is doing I need to work out how I manage my responses to what is going on. The issue is I am not sure how to do this and that leads to more frustration.

Any ideas on what I should do? Thank you, SD Dear SD Thank you so much for your e-mail, what you have written about seems to be an issue that many people are discussing at the moment. You are right the island has changed and that change has happened incredibly quickly and maybe it is the speed of that change, which is difficult to manage. You say there is no point in moaning and that you want to find a way to manage your responses. I admire you for wanting to do something to make this better for you, moaning can be quite destructive to you and those close to you. I suppose you have 2 options, either try to actually motivate others to make real changes which I imagine to be very time consuming and rather a huge task or look for ways like you say to manage your responses. Managing responses takes time to learn and needs practise, we develop patterns of behaviour throughout our lives and unlearning something can be far more challenging then learning something from scratch, however you have determination which is a great starting point. Whenever we have a reaction to something there is a trigger that we are reacting to, it might be useful to start to notice what your triggers are, it might be certain people, certain situations, certain subjects, times when you are tired, times when you have drunk a little too much or maybe when things are challenging at work or home. Whatever they are starting to notice them will then give you an opportunity to be more conscious of your responses. As I mentioned

above this will take time and initially will have to be very well thought out and you might miss some on occasions, all of this is normal and in time your responses will become more organic and eventually you will come to realise you are reacting differently without having to think about it, and your frustrations will begin to diminish. Again thank you for bringing up this subject and I hope it has been useful to others as well. Take care, Kate

View From The Pew

Resurrection, Christianity’s Big Bang Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel

“The universe has always existed”. “The universe is eternal”. Those were the slogans of scientists in the first decades of the 20th Century. At that time any talk about God creating the universe was seen as just scientifically ignorant and the language of the Bible as nothing short of mythological. It is now commonplace amongst scientists (virtually unanimous) to insist that all the scientific evidence, such as the expansion of the space-time continuum, points to the fact that the universe had an origin. Because of evidence such as the expansion of the universe and the background microwave radiation it has become increasingly clear amongst scientists that the universe had an origin in a singularity – the so-called big bang. One notable scientist (Frank Tipler) even says unashamedly that the singularity = God! The expansion of Christianity after the shameful and degrading death of its leader (Jesus) is also inexplicable without an origin – without a spiritual big bang. If a sceptical historian refuses to acknowledge the resurrection of Jesus he/she would have to invent something else equally amazing. Last week in this paper I wrote about the fact that, in the times in which Jesus lived, death by crucifixion at the hands of the Romans was as common as muck. Torture and execution by crucifixion was as common as it was horrible. Jesus was just one of many hundreds, even thousands, of Jews to be crucified by Roman soldiers in the first century AD. Followers of Jesus, very soon after the event of his shameful death, spread out from Jerusalem to all parts of the GrecoRoman world. Christian communities were springing up all over the Roman Empire. This great Christian movement (consisting of Jews and Gentiles) was incredibly diverse. There were many “Christianities”. And yet these communities all had one strange thing in common. They gathered together to worship God through Jesus and in the power of

the Holy Spirit on the first day of each week. If we extrapolate lines back from all these diverse Christian communities (always meeting together on a Sunday), spread throughout the Roman Empire, we end up at a remarkable day. Easter Day! - The big bang of Christianity. On that day an explosion of spiritual power took place that gave rise to communities of the resurrection throughout the Greco-Roman world. Carly S(miles) Anybody feeling a little down after reading the often doom and gloom news pages should find a welcome tonic of positivity in Carly’s column recounting her Easter activities. Carly S

Bright sunshine, blue skies, laughing kids, sparkling seas, sandcastles, entire days outdoors, warm temperatures, daylight until after eight pm...bliss! It seems that with the passing of Easter weekend, the Summer has arrived, and what a weekend it was!

Ours commenced on Good Friday with a special Easter training session at Talamanca with The Workout Club. New coach Gabriela Halecka put the grown ups through their paces with a fun and truly 'old school' workout made up of running to the tower and back, wheelbarrow racing, jumping jacks, cartwheels, pair work and bridges (or 'the crab' as we called it at school) thrown in with the more commonplace burpees, push ups, planks and stretches. Meanwhile, the awesome veteran coach, and big kid herself, Sascha Pederson entertained our kids with Easter egg hunts and games...great fun for all involved! After this, it was off to Es Canar for my munchkin and me where we enjoyed an afternoon of beach fun and a BBQ with friends before the hoards descend. Saturday was another fabulous sunny day, kicked off again with a TWC training session, this time in the park San Antonio led by the fantastic Katie Bolt whilst my hubby entertained the kids on the slides. After a few hours at work for Mike and running errands for us girls, we hopped on our bikes and cycled down to Mar I Pins

bar for their opening party. The BBQ was delicious, the gin and tonics generous and the tunes from DJ Chip sublime. A few hours in the company of friends flew by and we were home by eight for a relaxed evening before a busy day on Sunday. I was 'working' all day on Sunday. I put the verb in inverted commas as said work consisted of four hours singing with Backbeat at Cala Llenya market in the sunshine, a short drive to Atzaro then an hour chatting to kids, singing and dancing as Princess Anna in the White Rabbit corner with Ibiza Princess and Superhero Parties at the incredible Fiesta Primavera. Atzaro was packed, I heard over 13,000 people attended and that revellers were turned away in the evening as it was full to capacity! As always, the whole venue was beautifully decorated and had a wonderful happy, sunshine atmosphere filled with a sea of smiling faces. As I was there in role I only really saw the kids corner and main walkway, but would have loved to stick around and join the party! Unfortunately, though, a tired two year old and desire to eat something after a long day pulled me away as soon as I'd finished my work. At nine am on Monday we were at the ferry port in Ibiza town, eagerly awaiting the Trasmapi fast ferry to Formentera. It takes half an hour to cross and at 23€ return for residents (under 3's free) and with boats leaving every hour from 7:30 until 21:00, it's an easy, and pretty cheap, day out. Once in Formentera we

rented bikes (12€ for two of them plus child seat for the day) and spent the day cycling around the inland lake area and stopping off at pristine, white near deserted beaches. We went for the whole of Easter weekend last year and had loved how peaceful and beautiful it was off season so decided to go for a day trip again this year. With Easter being slightly earlier, it was even more quiet than the previous year, and the majority of hotels, restaurants and bars around Ses Illetes and Es Pujols were still closed, meaning we had the parks and the beaches to ourselves. We built a sand snowman, skimmed stones, explored the cycling routes amongst even got home, her tummy full of popcorn, homemade lemonade and tortilla and her face full of paint. All in all a terrific long weekend making memories. Here's to a great Summer 2016!

the sand dunes and all around the inland saltwater lake, sipped gin and tonics in San Francisco town square and just enjoyed some tranquil time together as a family. I can highly recommend a day trip to recharge

the batteries and connect with nature. It is just beautiful. On Tuesday the celebrations continued, with another fab TWC training session in San An with Katie whilst Ela played on the park equipment followed by a visit to friends in Santa Eulalia and an afternoon at Cala Martina. Ibiza Mamas had organised a family fun day and it was by far the biggest of their events that I've attended so far. The beautiful sunshine, kids school holidays and more people knowing about the group and the sterling organisational efforts of Ioana, Elizabeth and their team attracted what looked to be over 100 people. We were entertained with football from Soccer Kids, story telling and ukelele playing by Andrea and Amparo Marco Cuentos, t shirt designing, face painting, games

and a fab Easter Egg hunt! There was also delicious food by BeOrganic Ibiza and paella cooked up just before we left. It was a marvellous afternoon of laughter, life and smiles in the sunshine and Ela fell asleep in the car before we

What the??? Vardy scores England’s 2nd with a deft reverse as England come back from a brace down to win 2-3 in Berlin.

Jezza’s Sports Report ... Knock on Wood - England in a World Cup Semi! After winning the recent Rugby 6 Nations Grand Slam, Sport England must be on a high just for a change after the w/end's results in both football and

Cricket

as at the current T20 World Cup, would you believe it, England have made it thru' to the semis! Their last two Group games ended as I

hoped in last week's report, in wins, the first against Afghanistan, which caused a few heart flutters as at one stage Captain Morgan's team were really struggling at 78/5 but came back to finish at 142 and then they restricted the Afghans to 120 odd. That result left England needing a win against the holders Sri Lanka and a better nett run rate than South Africa to get thru' but then their cause was made slightly easier by the Windies beating SA so the Sri Lanka match came down to a straight knockout, with the winners reaching the semis. As is usual with any England team, we were made to suffer at certain stages but a brilliant Buttler innings of 66 no off 40 balls gave the team momentum, and barring a couple of hiccups and a brilliant innings from Angelo Mathews, they kept Sri Lanka at bay and eventually won by 2 wickets, setting up a semi against New Zealand on Wednesday afternoon. Now I'm not making any predictions, but the last 3 England/NZ matches have ended up as wins for the former but on the downside, NZ are the only unbeaten team left having won 4 from 4 group matches so 'tis anybody's game! As for the other semi on Thursday, it was adios to the Aussies, Pakistan and Bangladesh leaving the Windies to take on hosts India who starred in a thriller on Sunday to knock out Australia, so here's hoping for a Windies/England Final on Sunday! Good news too for the England Women in their T20 WC as they battled through to the semis as well, and now face old foes Australia, being a repeat of the last two Finals (which the Sheila's won on both occasions!) while the Windies play NZ in the other semi. So, good luck to both England teams and, being an eternal optimist, what a fantastic achievement it would be for both to get through to their

respective Finals.

Tennis

More good news for the Brits as we now have only the second ever World No 1 in the sport. No, not Andy as he's still No 2 and still in the Miami Open, but bro Jamie as altho' he lost in the Miami doubles, the fact that the previous encumbent, Marcelo Melo also lost meant that Jamie took over the No 1 ranking so congrats to him. The only other No 1 ranked Brit tennis player? Virginia Wade in doubles in 1973. Congrats also to Heather Watson and Johanna Konta as they are both through to the Miami 3rd round.

Golf

and a case of so near yet so far for World No 3 Rory McIlroy at the World Matchplat Championship in Austin, Texas as, having battled through to the semis, he came up against new No 1 Aussie Jason Day, and altho' actually playing the better golf, he succumbed by a shot. Matters got even worse tho' as in the 3rd/4th place play-off he lost out to Spaniard Cabrera-Bello, whilst Day went on to win the Final over South Africa's Louis Oostshuizen to record his second tour win in two and cement his position as World No 1.

Rugby Union

After the tension and furore of the 6 Nations it was back to the domestic Premiership for England's stars, and Saracens, complete with the

return of their 9 international players, made the difference as they beat leaders Exeter 36-18 at home in a top-of-the-table clash to move back to the top. Still close though as Exeter are only 3 points behind, closely followed by Wasps, a further point back as they won 34-20 at Newcastle. Elsewhere, Northampton, in 4th, came through 29-23 at home to Harlequins, Leicester were surprisingly beaten 27-20 at a Cipriani-inspired Sale, Bath celebrated the return of their England 3/4's as they won their second successive match, this time, 17-12 at old foes Gloucester, and London Irish look doomed to relegation as they lost, yet again, this time 12-6 at Worcester.

Rowing

At last, a Cambridge win at the 162nd Boat Race! After the Light Blues had been made to eat humble pie coming in 2nd every year since 2012, they at last turned the tide (and believe me, on old Father Thames that takes some doing!) to win by 2 and a half lengths and record only their 6th win this century so well done to them. Bit of split loyalties for me tho' as I went to school in Oxford and rowed whilst there whereas “'er indoors!” worked and lived in Cambridge but also my Pa had the unique experience of being a student at both Universities!

Football

and with the “friendly” international scene taking prefer-

ence over the leagues, England did their chances at the upcoming Euro16 Finals a power of good as manager Hodgson selected an experimental young and eager XI against World Champions Germany in Berlin and what a great game that turned out to be, with the 3 Lions coming out on top 3-2. I watched the first 60 odd minutes and after Germany took a 2-0 lead I turned the telly off, thinking we were on for a bit of a hammering, only to find out on the later news that Hodgson's young lions had scored 3 in the last 30 minutes. Oh, me of little faith! And great to see the top 2 marksmen in the Premier League, Kane and Vardy, with a goal apiece, both stunning goals in their own right. So, wins over Germany and France in their last two and let's hope they make it 3 from 3 as they take on Holland on Tuesday night at Wembley. Let's also hope that the 90,000 odd English supporters will give a right old send-off to that Dutch legend Johann Cruyff who sadly passed< away last week after a long battle with the dreaded Big C. I, like many older fans of my generation, was brought up having had the privilege of watching the Dutch master at his pomp (remember the WC of '74 with his brilliant Cruyff turn, when he was the tournament's star, even though Holland lost the Final against the then West Germany made even more memorable as English referee Jack Taylor gave the Dutch a penalty in the 2nd minute) and duly becoming, in most fan's eyes, the best footballer on the planet at the time (bearing in mind Pele had retired and Maradona was only a junior!). RIP, a Meister. In other matches, Euro qualifiers Wales, without Señor Bale, and Northern Ireland drew 11 with the former playing Ukraine in Kiev and the latter Slovenia in Belfast, both tonight (Monday) while nonEuro qualifiers Scotland beat the Czech Republic 1-0 and now face Denmark on Tuesday and Eire play Slovakia on the same night. That's about it for this week but couldn't resist this cartoon from one of the English dailies which, in my opinion, encapsulates all that I have ever said about a certain Ms Balding!!! Cheers for now, Jezza
