Lunch Money Tax Agents find over one millions euros hidden in coolers and lunchboxes at Privilege.
Inspections of the Privilege nightclub during July as part of the Tax Agency’s ‘Chopin’ investigation have uncovered more than a million euros stuffed into cool bags, lunch boxes and even shoeboxes according to a report carried by Spanish Daily El Pais.
The operation, which followed an investigation of the Amnesia nightclub a few weeks before, was aimed at both the Space and Privilege clubs. It is understood both presented considerable difficulties for the Tax agency investigators due to the size of (Continued on page 6)

because his path through life has been so unusual. Nothing could be more apparent, as he reveals to the viewer his keen eye for composition and his gift for capturing an intimate moment. For the very first time in Ibiza, this series of photographs originates from his 2011 album Everything Changes. In each print, layered images are captured within the shape of a butterfly, a symbol of soul and transformation, that slowly uncover lyrical and fragile, intimate compositions. A philanthropist from an early age, a portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will go to The White Feather Foundation, the global environmental and humanitarian organization founded by Julian in 2007. Ibiza Sonica Radio are marking their 10th anniversary with a party which will take place on Friday August 19th at Kumharas Ibiza, from 11 a.m to 12 p.m.
They tell us there will be live streaming for those unfortunate enough not to be able to make it to the event, but for those that can, food, DJ`s, surprises and “everything you would expect from a 10 years celebration” is promised. Worried by the ambiguity of ‘everything you would expect’ we put the most important question to Sonica Director Andy Wilson – that being, will there be Birthday Cake? In a flustered response, a clearly off-guard Andy replied, “Er, I don’t know, you are the only ones to ask. Do you like cake?” And so there you have it, on which basis we would consider the chances of ‘pass the parcel’ to be minimal. But we’re going anyway.

Breakfast at Savannah’s
The sunset strip is, for obvious reasons, primarily known as the place to go for the fantastic sunsets on the West of the island. Reserve a table at one of the four bar/restaurants, order some food, sip a nice
cocktail and clap the sun as it puts a full stop on the end of another glorious Ibiza day. The strip at sunset isn’t for everybody though - it’s very very busy, it can be hard to get a table, parking is a nightmare and
some people prefer to avoid it altogether. If you’re one of those mellower types or just fancy a different take on the strip, then a word to the wise – it opens in the daytime. We headed down there at 11am to kick start the day at Savannah with a view to sampling their breakfast/brunch menu. We were too early for the grill and salad selection, which starts at 1pm, but had a myriad of choices with their breakfast and sandwiches menu. There were three of us with vastly differing tastes, but I’ll concentrate on mine because it’s obviously the best. I understand the need to be healthy, so I like to combine an easy to digest, vitamin packed super liquid followed by whatever I fancy. It’s not really a nutritional plan, but I’m still functioning to some degree so it must be working. First up is the liquid, and I opt for the ‘Energy Smoothie’ consisting of Brazilian super berry Acai, strawberry and orange juice. It looks awful, which is the sure fire sign that it must be good for you. It tastes pretty good, which worries me, but I’m assured that it is packed with healthy goodness. Now the short wait begins before the ‘Eggs Benedict’ arrives. I could have plumped for the typical fry-up, a bowl full of Acai, pancakes, sandwiches or wraps, but I fancied the eggs and my diet allows it. I take the opportunity to enjoy the view of the sea and start feeling a bit poetic. An old man is snorkelling just off of the rocks and I can see flecks of white spume cascading through the waves from my shaded table. It’s almost 30 degrees already, but the slight breeze is cooling my ankles and softly kissing the plants in the gable. Shade, o glory to shade which doth me able. Luckily the food arrives before I can think of a limerick and I tuck in. The eggs are perfectly poached, the muffins are fresh and the sauce is deliciously thick and full of tasty badness. My only regret is that I demolish it in about 4 seconds. I suppose I can always order more, buy a ruffled shirt, spend all day
here and pretend I’m Byron or Keats. Yup, I doth like that idea… Above: Eggs Benedict, Below: Acai, which I am advised should not be judged on appearance, Nick said it was superb

the establishments and the number of bars and cash receiving points which, it was considered, gave ample opportunity for a member of the Club’s personnel to give the order to destroy evidence if their search was not undertaken correctly. The report says that in the case of Space, which has 18 bars, they decided to direct their attention to the head of security, preventing him from sounding the alarm. Agents were inside the club before it closed and without warning blocked all cash registers and set about interrogating the security chief. In Privilege they approached matters differently. The Agents swooped on the club when it was already closed but the manager with access to cash was still inside. Having located the manager they went on to find huge amounts of cash which could not be accounted for through recorded sales and so were deemed black money for the purposes of avoiding their obligations of declaration. As a result of the Privilege sting more than 1 million euros in unaccounted cash was found In El País’ report, they stated that agents had spent weeks undercover in the clubs, acting as regular patrons but actually compiling dossiers as to entry and exit times, access, location of cash registers etc.

Party Brit in Ibiza hospital after suspected ecstasy overdose Daily Star 16/08/2016
A British holidaymaker has been rushed to hospital after a suspected ecstasy overdose in Ibiza. An American aged around 30 is also in observation in the same hospital after binging on drugs. The two cases are thought to be unconnected, although both men were taken to hospital from an unnamed club in the municipality of San Antonio. Last week police warned clubbers in Ibiza dealers could be hawking lethal ecstasy pills. The warning comes after pills with five times the normal dose of MDMA were found at the house of a robbery suspect. Officers said a single tablet with such a high dosage of MDMA could kill and they couldn't rule out the possibility more were still on the market despite the drugs seizure. They confiscated 90 of the pills during the arrest, all with the logo of a well-known Ibiza party on.A source said the logo was Music On, a techno extravaganza now in its fifth season at island super club Amnesia which was raided by armed police last month as part of a tax investigation. The drugs were discovered after the arrests of two men accused of robbing nearly £10,000 from a hotel safe. Brit drug dealer Ian Francis Smith, 38, was sentenced to six years in jail in April after admitting trying to smuggle a record 35,000 ecstasy tablets into Ibiza. He was held after going to the island airport to retrieve a lost suitcase.

Flare fired from boat sets protected nature reserve ablaze. Captain denies responsibility on grounds he was technically no longer the Captain
A fire took hold of the s'Espalmador area of Formentera last Saturday night at around 22:45pm. According to eye witnesses, a flare was seen to have been fired from a boat that was docked in the field of buoys s’Espalmador. Within minutes the blaze could be seen from afar and the unfavourable wind conditions fuelled the flames which affected almost a hectare of juniper. All emergency services were called in - IBANAT, Maritime Rescue, Civil Guard, the Ibiza and Formentera Fire and Civil Guard Protection with two vessels coming from Sant Antoni and Ibiza to assist in controlling the fire. The fire was eventually controlled by 07.45am and was rated Level 0 which posed no threat to people or homes.

British Man Arrested For ‘Near Fatal’ Domestic Assault The Spanish National Police have issued a statement in which they report having apprehended a British National while he was committing a serious physical assault on his wife/partner. The Police were responding to an emergency call of a witness on Friday in the early hours of the morning. They said that when they arrived the man was punching his wife severely and made an attempt to strangle her. Reflecting the severity of the attack the police statement said that they consider their intervention to have “avoided a fatal outcome”. The victim had to be hospitalised due to their injuries. No information was given as to the identity or location of the attack. During the months of July and August, the National Police in Ibiza have dealt with 38 cases of alleged domestic violence, which are handled by the specialist UFAM unit which is responsible for monitoring and protection of victims of gender violence.
By a coincidental misfortune I found myself spending a long 5 hours in the waiting room of Can Misses hospital accident and emergency department on the night of 16th/17th August. In context of what I witnessed I would have to say that though the Daily Star, as with all British tabloids, have portrayed the story in as sensationalist way as possible, in reality their account is actually very conservative. Of the wide ranging problems facing the urgencias over the course of my 5 hour wait, with little more to occupy my time than observe the unit’s comings and goings, there was everything from an extremely colic baby to moped accidents to mental health issues. But I would certainly guesstimate over half of the throughput to have been messed up party people. Though it does not lessen the problem, in terms of the blame heaped upon the British I can say that a large proportion of those attending were certainly not native English speakers. It seemed quite a few were Eastern European and a thought that did occur to me in terms of our bad rep is that because so many nationalities use English as the international language of communication, many Spanish people may simply assume they are British. After all, can you tell whether a person speaking Spanish is from Argentina or Mexico? I am not trying to pass the buck or make excuses, just making the point that this factor may compound the bad reputation we have to many Spanish people. Regardless of where they were from, some of the behaviour in the accident and emergency unit was simply appalling. I doubt it is anything the emergency departments of inner cities the world over are not used to seeing, but the abuse and antics the staff have to put up with is just terrible. In one case two girls, these were most definitely British, arrived in an emergency ambulance. I assume that, realising the girls were not in need of lifesaving attention, they were directed back out to the general triage/waiting area. They then made a huge nuisance of themselves at reception and also trying to get to the rear treatment areas. They then spent the next 20 minutes on their phones – on speaker of course, even seemed to have a bit of a dance. Then presumably bored and realising they were not getting immediate attention they just left, walking out muttering curses and staggered off into the Ibiza night. They were of course completely oblivious to the time they had wasted of medical services at the hospital not to mention an ambulance that could have been required on a genuine emergency. Less irritating but equally astonishing was what some people consider worthy of a trip to urgencias. One grown man said he had come off his moped, but had nothing more than a graze on his chin. Not even a cut. What is the Italian for “please help me, I’ve got an ow-ey”.
43yr Old Italian Arrested The president of the Consell de Formentera Jaume Ferrer, has confirmed that the Civil Guard has arrested Roberto P, an Italian man aged 43, who is accused of launching the flare which caused the s’Espalmador fire. The perpetrator has been released pending charges of causing a forest fire by gross negligence which carries a sentence of between one and five years’ imprisonment, the vessel ‘Ruah’ has also been seized in order to cope with the eventual liability if deemed responsible. The defendant’s lawyer Daniel Mundula, believes that his client "should not be charged" and blames the responsibility of what happened to the captain of the boat, who was giving them instructions on how to use flares. Mundula stated his client admits he fired the flare, but did so "accidentally". Statements taken by the Civil Guard from the 8 allItalian crew, reported the captain was explaining how to use flares when at one point he removed the red top (the ultimate step before firing) from the flare, which launched the detainees towards the land. According to legal sources, the crew also stated that after throwing the flare, the defendant and another crew member jumped to the island to try to extinguish the fire, however they could not and at 23.07 the fire alarm was raised. Statements from other witnesses are also being collected by the Civil Guard. However, researchers do not give credence to the explanation of the crew, as they believe it is unusual for a captain to offer a course on how to throw flares at night when they have already spent several days sailing. Moreover, that when the captain was supposedly teaching the

Now that’s what we call a selfie: Fantastic shot taken by one of the firemen attending to the blaze on S'Espalmador, which he titled ’Cansado’ (tired) course, there were only two of the eight persons occupying the yacht, including the detainee, on-board.
The Captain Stands The Captain of the yacht ‘Ruah’ was in court to testify his version of the events which took place on Saturday night causing the s’Espalmador fire; he is also charged with causing a forest fire by gross negligence. The Captain said in court that he had ‘ceased to be responsible for the yacht on Friday 12th August, because he had completed his contract as captain’. “Just a day before the fire broke out on the island” said his lawyer, Daniel Mundula. According to Mundula, ‘the statements of the two accused, both of Italian nationality, are not contradictory. The captain stated that he had ceased to be responsible for the ship on Friday and that the plan was that the yacht stay on the buoy for a few days until a new captain could take over the 'Ruah', a boat which belongs to a Slovenian company. According to this story, as he had to find a new head, the seven plus crew asked the captain to give them a basic understanding of security, which took place Saturday night. At that time, 2245 hours approximately Roberto P. launched "accidentally" caught in the flare that s'Espalmador. This coincides with what stated
Roberto P.’ "[The captain] said that as he had finished his assignment and had to leave the ship, and it was moored safely, some of the guests asked something about security measures since he had a ticket to return to Valencia and thence to Italy, and the guests had to stay on the boat waiting for the new captain" added the lawyer, who insisted that "there is no divergence between what has been declared by the captain and Roberto P. Now, in order to continue the investigation, we must interrogate many witnesses…wait for the assessment of damages and reports of Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard and ‘quote insurance for the issue of liability’" added Mundula. Following his statement, the captain left the hidden court with a motorcycle helmet and sunglasses and went running to avoid being photographed - which failed. In the door of the courthouse his lawyer added “"His role as captain of the ‘Ruah’ ended on the 12th, right up to the buoy [s'Espalmador] where they should anchor the boat had to stay there for three days and then another captain took command ie, the event did not occur under his command" He also added that "In this type of crime you can be charged as the captain, but if it is not proven you are the captain, I understand that he cannot be accused".
The Government supports the purchase of s'Espalmador but can’t go it alone.
The owners of S’Espalmador, an Island that forms part of Formentera, decided to sell the Island in October 2015. At the time of our first report they were asking 24 million euros. Bernardo Cinnamond James acquired the little island in 1932, buying it from Carlos Tur Roig for 42,500 pesetas. The Regional Minister of Presidency of the Balearic Government, Pilar Costa, confirmed yesterday that the president of the Consell de Formentera, Jaume Ferrer, requested by letter to the regional government to buy the island of s'Espalmador taking advantage of the reduction in the price offered the current owners. The price now stands at 18 million if paid at once or 20 if paid in instalments, said Costa. "We welcome the purchase of s'Espalmador, but have to seek
funding assistance from other administrations," stressed the Regional Minister of Presidency, which pointed to the central government, but also considered that the Consell de Formentera "should participate". Pilar Costa said that the price reduction offered by the owners is "an opportunity" to put the islet definitely safe from any threat The Government is expected to meet in September with the president of the Consell de Formentera, Jaume Ferrer, to analyse the steps and study the terms under which the central government could participate in this, still hypothetical, purchase. Meanwhile Formentera political group Gent per Formentera (GxF) has asked the Government for "speed and efficiency" from the Department of Environment to preserve the Posidonia against the ravages caused by illegal moorings. "Formentera needs and demands direct powers to be equipped with the instruments necessary for their protection," says their statement issued this weekend.
Posidonia Protection Ignored
A photograph printed in the Diario de Ibiza has highlighted the work to be done in enforcing the regulations prohibiting vessels from mooring in the exclusion zones around parts of Ibiza and all of Formentera. The photograph taken by Daniel Azagra, shows no less than 70 boats anchored en masse in an area off Formentera where there is theoretically a complete ban.

Jacaranda, Es Canar
This weekend was a big one in Jacaranda, with them extending Celebrity Sunday's to Thursday as well, Jamie Porteous broadcasting live on Ibiza Global radio on Saturday (now a weekly occurrence) and having ex Westlife singer Brian McFadden perform an acoustic set on Sunday. When we arrived on Thursday the place was packed with families, young groups and older couples all keen to party with Phats and Small - who were fantastic yet again. Prior to them playing, Charlie Starr took to the stage with her Tina Turner tribute and was brilliant. Decked out in wig, heels and a fringed, sparkly mini dress which masked her 6.5 month pregnancy bump, she strutted and sang in an absolutely spot on impersonation of the legendary lady. Vocally you could have mistaken her for the real deal and her stance, movements and facial expressions were Tina to a T. I was hugely impressed. The pool was full and the stage surrounded with dancing revellers before the main event even began and, as before, the atmosphere for Phats and Small was electric. Jason dropped phat one after phat one (sorry, couldn't resist!) at the decks as Ben sang, shouted, danced, jumped and whipped the crowd into a splashing, smiling, singing, dancing frenzy. These boys know how to get a party going so it was no surprise to hear they're booked again to headline the Celebrity Sunday's closing party on the 4th of September. On Sunday it was fairly quiet early on but started filling as the energetic Kitos, local talent with the swinging hips, floppy hair and colorful clothes of a typical Latino lothario, sang a huge range of pop covers in English, Spanish and even Italian as he danced and strutted around the pool. He was especially

just a small few. Some would say trance has fallen on the way side in the past number of years but my response to them is, it’s not about quantity it’s about quality. Yes sadly the number of trance nights has declined but there still is the demand in Ibiza and I felt tonight really showed this. I arrive at Es Paradise for 1AM and the dance floor is already full. And with a line up Alex M.O.R.P.H, Ben Nicky, Maria Healy & Woody van Eyden why wouldn´t it be? Sipping on a vodka and sprite (which I blagged by the way) from the VIP section of Es Paradise I hear Above & Beyonds ´Satelite´, what a way to start the night, a tribute to my favorite trance group. Nicely done Alex M.O.R.P.H!! Keep them coming. Next to take to the DJ booth is Ben Nicky. Best described as “One of the cheekiest yet hardest working DJs in the scene” – Armin Van Buuren. This is fantastic testament to this Bristol born DJ who has been making a big name for himself the past few years. He brings the beats up and plays the heavier sounds of trance. Half way through his set he drops (a personal favorite of mine) ´Find Yourself´ by John O´Callaghan, the crowd goes crazy. YOU´LL FIND YOURSELF, YOU´LL FIND YOURSELF ALONE!! Maria Healy is last to the decks and is responsible for bringing the beats till the early hours of the morning. Coming from the Emerald Isle (like myself) Maria is certainly one to watch. Her new track ´The Story´ has been hugely successful, and has gotten support from Aly & Fila, John O´Callaghan and Solarstone. Maria keeps the dance floor full with her mix of trance and tech trance while playing some classics alone the way. And really, that is what it is all about. Trance is not a genre experienced through the screens of mobile phones half a mile away from the DJ. It is about the floor, a dancefloor shared by those of a like mind, or as I would put it, the right mind. Connect Floor, I remind myself to remember that for a headline, but with the party in full swing, I wonder if I will. We’ll never know. If trance and progressive is your sound then you have to check out Connect. It’s one of the few nights left that are still bringing big trance names to Ibiza. Connect hold their weekly sunset boat party setting sail from San Antonio Harbor every Wednesday. Then continue the party at Tropi bar on the West End until midnight and finish the night off in Es Paradise. Whatever the question, let trance be the answer.

Community Thurs 18th August to Weds 24th August 2016 ARIES – Ace of Swords Put your energy into new ventures; believe you can succeed this week and you will! This card implies plenty of mental energy so you’ll be full of good ideas or will want to impress others with your knowledge on certain matters. Those of you, who write for a living or work with business via the internet, will be brilliantly inspired. TAURUS – Knight of Pentacles (reversed) Don’t be tempted to throw your weight around by insisting that others do things your way as this may provoke reactions you’d not counted, which could lead to arguments. You’re in a doing mood so expect to get a lot done this week, which is why you must avoid being bossy. Best to work by yourself as much as possible! GEMINI – Three of Pentacles You’ve planted the seeds for a new lifestyle and all you have to do is be patient while plans are germinating. If you’re the creative type, now’s the time to get cracking on an important project as you’ll be inspired to create masterpieces! For other more practical Gemini’s, you can confidently invest in a new venture, it will pay off. CANCER – The Sun Look after your health and well-being this week so you can have more vitality to get on and do the things matter to you. A new fitness regime will help your general mood as well. In business, the Sun heralds a new period of success, with new ventures doing particularly well. It’s a time to be happy and give thanks. LEO – The Lovers This week you’ll be presented with choices so think carefully about what you really want out of life and pursue it whole heartedly. You also make new contacts that prove useful for the future; both professionally and personally as well. Romance for single Leo’s will be light hearted and flirty; you may have more than one choice of playmate too! VIRGO – Two of Cups This week sees the start of a beautiful new friendship or romance. You’ll both be kind and thoughtful of one another and it’s certainly a relationship that will stand the test of time. For those of you who are attached; a relationship becomes closer and you’re open to making more of a commitment. Good news gives you something to celebrate. LIBRA – Knight of Cups (reversed) You may hear news that’s initially disappointing but don’t feel too bad if it means that a plan falls through. It’s all about timing this week and other issues will need your urgent attention. If you have to make a stand over something; speak your truth and reject any proposal that doesn’t ring true. You’re not a pushover by any means! SCORPIO – The Chariot You need to get more involved with a certain project or take notice of a new business opportunity that would be wise to pursue. Holding out waiting for better terms means you could lose out if you hesitate. This week get out and about socially you need to remind your social circle of what they’ve been missing; your fabulous self! SAGITTARIUS – King of Pentacles (reversed) This could be a tough week business wise, as nothing seems to go smoothly; one hold up after another is frustrating, especially if you’re ready to proceed whilst others are dragging their feet. Also, watch out for some underhanded actions from others. Is someone being straightforward or using you for fresh ideas and not offering any compensation for your efforts? CAPRICORN – Knight of Swords You’ll enjoy putting on a bit of a show this week and want to make sure everyone notices you and or that they certainly won’t forget you! Make sure however, that you include some flexibility in your approach to career as you might be considered arrogant or stubborn. Also, important plans are taking shape so have faith on positive outcomes. AQUARIUS – Five of Wands Love can only be earned. You can't force it or demand it, therefore sort out the internal workings of your own emotions this week and let others get on with theirs. Muddled thinking will tie you up in knots, so relax and bask the affection you attract. You succeed by breaking through emotional blocks and letting down any barriers. PISCES – Page of Swords It may appear that any deadlines you hope to meet are out of reach. Don’t give up yet, it will take patience and tenacity to get what you want this week. There is a glimmer of hope so keep at it and ignore those who insist in throwing a negative spanner in the works. If you’re studying; don’t get side-tracked.

Great Cloud of Witnesses Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel
The first followers of Jesus didn’t just think about the next world (the afterlife or heaven) as something that we can at best just hope that it exists. Neither did they just hope that they would one day quite soon arrive at the other shore and see again the people they love who have passed on before them. There is a remarkable saying in the book of Hebrews (a first-century Jewish-Christian text written in classical Greek by an unknown author). The author is reflecting on the great and innumerable company of believers in God who have passed on to the other shore before us: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus.” (The Bible, Hebrews, Chapter 12.1). This Jewish-Christian teacher of the faith says that for the follower of Jesus this life journey is like a marathon race. We are, he says, part of the great road race of believers in God throughout all ages. All the previous runners in this race are looking to us to finish what they have begun! They are a “great cloud of witnesses”. The author uses the Greek word martures with the triple meaning of a “spectator” and a “witness” or “martyr”. They are spectators of the race that they had once ran in and they are witnesses of the faith by the example of their lives. The “great cloud of witnesses” perhaps signifies a compact but nevertheless innumerable fellow runners in the great race of life and that they are now spectators of our race cheering us on. The author encourages us to travel light – “lay aside every weight” and “the sin that entangles”. This great long-distance foot race requires the removal of all that could reduce performance. We are to fix our eyes on Jesus – his teaching and example. Hebrews is no doubt alluding to the Isthmian games as does Saint Paul which were celebrated every two years on the Isthmus of Corinth. Held in honor of the Greek gods, the festival consisted of foot races, horse races, chariot contests, jumping, wrestling, boxing and throwing the discus and javelin. We are everyday in the company of the great cloud of witnesses cheering us on. We can feel their energy and inspiration as we look constantly to Jesus especially to his wonderful teaching and example. The English-Speaking Church on Ibiza and Formentera. Johnny Guitar Nancy It is with great sadness that I have to tell you all that my good friend, "Johnny Guitar", died on Wednesday, August 3rd, aged 84, at the Residencia Cas Serres, our home for a few years now. As some of you will know, Johnny came to Ibiza about 35 years ago and, because of his musical talents, his sense of fun, his storytelling, his sense of humour and the fact that he often wore a Guardia Civil uniform, he soon became one of the island's larger-than-life and much loved REAL characters! His interment was last Wednesday, August 10th, a whole week after his death, any earlier being out of the question because of the long fiesta weekend being celebrated in Ibiza - Johnny would have had a good laugh at that! Several of his good friends were away on holiday and so, sadly, were unable to come to his "send-off", but quite a few of us gathered at midday at his niche, right at the top of the New Cemetery in Ibiza, to remember, and give thanks for, his colourful life. The short service was conducted by the Intercontinental Church Society's "tourist chaplain", Rev.Canon Herrick Daniel, since the resident Anglican chaplain, Peter, was also off the island at the time. We sang The Lord's My Shepherd, with Sarah on flute, there was a Bible reading and a time of prayer, Sue Marí played us part of a recording of Johnny on his guitar and harmonica, several anecdotes about Johnny were shared and a couple of tributes were read out....all just before the heavens opened! Thank you all for your support at this difficult time and for your kind messages of condolence. I'll say goodbye now and leave you with the tributes to Johnny:
From Bob (the ex-vicar) & Clare Short: Johnny was one of the real Ibiza characters that you never forget. I think we first met him and Nancy when Julia either brought them to church one Sunday or maybe at an Age Concern thing. They used to come to "Tea and Chat" at Can Bagot and he always enjoyed Solveig's crab sandwiches and sometimes he would tell us stories about his life. We heard how he grew up in Liverpool in the war. One day he was sent by his parents to buy something at the local corner shop/grocers. While out, the air-raid sirens went off and bombs started coming down. When he went back home, it had vanished, along with his parents - he never saw them again! He was just a teenage boy. He then joined the army and I believe he later went to Korea during the Korean war. He was a mercenary for several years in different places and eventually came to Spain, where he donned his famous Guardia Civil hat and uniform! He was a wonderful bloke and I remember one day when he broke into song with his amazing voice, which had such a clear resonance even at his age! His voice and music were a Godgiven gift, and we hope and pray that in his latter years he was able to find peace with God in his heart, as he was able to think through his remarkable life.
From Julia Moore: Johnny was a very caring, fun-loving, simple soul, all goodness....and who, I don't know how, knew His heavenly Father and who trusted Him in the little things. He had a lovely, very innocent faith and always referred to God as his Papa. I'm just so thankful to God that Johnny now has a room in our Father's heavenly mansion, a room specially prepared for him by his Papa, whose hand was guarding and caring for him, even in the not so good times. It was a privilege to have known him. I have lost a very special friend.

Note from the Editor Nick Gibbs
San Antonio Customer Service
I accept San An wanting to publish their fiesta programme in Catalan and Castellano only, but to go to the trouble of applying security settings to their pdf that prevent copying the text out seems just bloody minded. The effect is that for us to provide an English translation of their programme of events for the benefit of their English speaking tourists and non-Spanish speaking residents and workers, it would require a complete, manual, retyping; in addition to the job of translation - a job some might think a town so reliant on the English speaking tourist trade would have considered doing themselves. This is not an issue about English expecting English, it is essentially one of customer service - certainly as far as providing information to tourists is concerned. The screenshots are from the official London tourist information site, available in Spanish, German, French, Chinese and several other languages, and also from the Barcelona tourist website, an area passionate about their Catalan heritage - but again showing all agenda and event info available in several languages.
Who Are The Pirates?
Last week’s editorial ‘Who Are The Pirates’ seems to have struck a chord with a good many people. The article was written following an undercover exposé on Spanish national television of Ibiza’s illegal Taxi trade , and argued that it is Ibiza’s legal and licensed taxi drivers who are in large part responsible for creating the demand that allows the illegal taxis to thrive. It has been our most viewed webpage story in the last 3 months and attracted a good deal of comment on Social media—unusually for an opinion piece the comment was without exception supportive.

I have copied some of those below, not in an exercise of wallowing in self congratulation, but to highlight the level of support received., and also what particularly struck me was that it came from such a diverse group of people in the resident community. That said, we all like to get some acknowledgement of our efforts from time to time, and I was particularly gratified to receive the comments of long term Ibizan resident author and screenwriter Colin Butts. To me it really is ‘Praise from Allah’ The article is available here http://theibizan.com/interviewsandopinion/editorial-whoare-the-pirates/
Lorraine Caplan: that’s a Great Editorial Nick Gibbs thank you very much. Excellent idea also the temporary license! Mari Rubel : Excellent Nick Gibbs. Colin Butts : What an absolutely brilliant editorial! It gives examples we are all familiar with, draws the distinction between the types of illegal taxi driver, the reasons for using them, gives a brilliant analogy to the taxi drivers argument that they have to make their money in the summer and best of all, doesn't just highlight the problem but comes up with a very reasonable and effective solution. A must read. Bravo! Steve Hart : Great article Nick, something's going to have to change, the lack of cabs in summer is a joke. Jacquie Bernier : When I was still doing the party thing my illegal taxi guy was a life saver... he could find me at any after hours party I had wound up at and got me safely home in time to get to work... my friends loved me because I could always get us from point a to point b with no more than a 20 min wait... he was my life saver for almost 5 years. Jane Charilaou : Thunderous round of applause!! Bloody well said, Nick! x Gail Villar : I remember several years ago when he idea of Discobus was being considered. The taxi drivers SAT in theCalle Isidora Macabick to try and prevent the service. They just want o hold the island to ransom.. Carly Marie Sorensen : Brilliant, Nick. X Steve Swain : Great article Nick Prince Estif : Best article I've ever read from you Nick

had me all the way to the end As if too order, a taxi was then photographed by Tania Muscovitch on its roof with a suggestion of being due to speeding…
But was the last comment made by somebody offended by the article? We had the office door smashed Friday night, the day after publication. We have never had a problem with vandalism before, but we will never know, so I guess we’ll just have to chalk it up as coincidence. But even if it were a result, there would be little that could have upset me this week. Colin Butts followed up my publicly thanking him for his comments with this; I hope it isn’t too self indulgent to print it.
Colin Butts : Yeah sorry, realise now it seems a bit like a bloody review! Didn't mean it to sound like that but it was such a witty, well-informed and well-written piece that I had to check it wasn't a guest writer doing the editorial (there, does that redress the balance?). Seriously though Nick, when I think about how the Ibiza Sun used to be - and no offence to the previous incumbents cos it was still a useful outlet - you have shown not only consistent writing and editing skill but dare I say, bravery, not being scared to upset people who could be detrimental to your business. A rare quality in Ibiza. Keep it up me old China x

Shebizan Hola Zipsters from Mallorca, this week. As you may know, I spend my summers here and in Ibiza. This obviously involves a fair amount of flying and spending time with fellow brits abroad. I wanted to share one of my biggest current ‘holiday fashion’ cringes. I’d like to think that the whole concept of ‘dressing for your flight’ is slightly over for us girls. We want to be comfortable and whizz through security ASAP, so a pair of Havianas, cut offs and a vest is simple and ample (if a bit cold when the plane’s air-con kicks in). However, it’s the guys who are making me snigger or rather, belly laugh at the moment. Men of all ages, from young guys with their mates on a stag do, through to the slightly aging Dad, taking his young family to the Balearics to revisit the haunts of his youth, there’s one thing they all have in common: ‘I’m going on holiday and therefore I MUST WEAR A PANAMA HAT!’ They wouldn’t be seen dead in them for the other 50 weeks of the year, but as soon as they get onto the Gatwick Express, the Panama hat becomes the uniform. It’s the standard uniform for Ibiza and Mallorca, apparently. Looking like you’re David Attenborough on your way to the Galapagos Islands is a tad ridiculous, I’m afraid. Unless you want to go the whole hog and carry a pair of binoculars plus a pocket book to note down your observations regarding the flora and fauna. Anyway, onto this week’s instalment and we visit the fashionable side of Rio and take a look at Zayn Mallik’s new fashion range. Enjoy this week’s Zips It Up. X Read Amanda’s fashion blog

Zayn’s New Fashion Range
OK, so in full Cougar mode – here goes. This boy is the full package. Looks, voice, image and worldwide superstardom at the tender age of just 22. Designers have been falling over themselves to dress him since his 1D days, but after his uber arty Vogue shoot with model-of-the-moment girlfriend Gigi Hadid and his first Met Gala earlier this year, Zayn Malik has become a fashion force to be reckoned with. It’s no surprise, then, that Zayn has decided to make his first foray into design, with a new collaboration with the Italian luxury shoemaker Giuseppe Zanotti, due to be released in 2017. The singer started dropping (heavy) hints on his Instagram recently, when he posted a black and white image from his recent shoot with GQ magazine. The shot, which sees him posing in the black biker boots that hit just above the ankle, was captioned ‘#GiuseppexZayn Coming 2017.’ In his GQ interview, Zayn reveals that he first met Zanotti at Paris Fashion Week last year and immediately clicked with the designer, leading to a creative partnership further down the line. According to the singer, the two have a similar attitude to creativity. ‘Style is not being afraid to be bold about some things, or to say what it is you have to say,’ he told GQ. ‘I feel like Giuseppe does that with his collection – and I try to do that with my music. So it kind of works.’ The news of Zayn’s fashion collaboration with Zanotti comes hot on the heels of Jennifer Lopez, who announced that she has designed a
Zaney, Manda’s dream boy Zayn Mallik collection of killer heels with the designer (of course). But, as much as I love JLO and shoes, I’m leaning towards Zayn’s swagger at the moment.
Her Name is Rio and She Dances in the Sand…
With the Rio Olympics on 24/7, it may be an epic event for some, but not for me. Gold medals or no gold medals, I’m bored stiff of the whole shebang, but I knew something of interest had to be hidden in there somewhere. No, and not Usain Bolt’s skin tight shorts. My attention has turned to the Brazilian fashion designers going for gold, internationally. From beachwear to handmade footwear and artisan-inspired ready-to-wear, there’s a rich pool of talent to tap into... I’ve chosen my favourites.
Agua de Coco (left)
This luxury fashion house was established in 1985 and specialises in super luxe swimwear. Their collections are often a highlight of São Paulo Fashion Week, featuring some of the country’s top models including Alessandra Ambrosio. As well as beautifully intricate swimwear, their line includes dresses and separates that look equally at home on the beach or in the bar.
Adriana Degreas (facing page top)
Brazil is of course known for its beaches (and beach bodies) so it’s only natural that beachwear is something Brazilians do rather well. Degreas’ designs are famous for their striking details, such as unusual cut-outs and panels, and the brand is a favourite of many celebs including Suki Waterhouse and Gisele. If it’s a Brazillian Gisele silhouette you’re after (I wish), Degreas is the one to help you achieve it.

Carlos Miele’s labels sell in more than 30 countries worldwide and it’s easy to see why. His popular readyto-wear designs are influenced by Brazilian artisan techniques and his clothing often features elements created by local artisan co-operatives. His love of figure-hugging fabrics emphasises the female form in a way that only a Brazilian designer can achieve – it’s soft, sensual and has an attitude. Anyway, back to the steroid enhanced Russian gymnasts… yawn.

Team Gb All Set To Break Medals Record! Olympics Rio 2016
After a very slow start, Team GB are now really flying and with a current total of 41 medals as I write (Tuesday) look all set to not only beat their management target of 48 medals but also their previous record of 49 in an overseas Olympics. Incredible stuff from what appears to be a determined and all-together squad of athletes, they have now overtaken China (population in the billions) to be currently second in the medal table to the might of the USA (population 260 million) with 16 golds, 17 silvers and 8 bronze, so hats off to them. Special congrats though must go to those in the individual events such as: *Justin Rose who beat Henrik Stenson in the Golf on the last hole to become the first winner in 104 years and who also claimed a spectacular hole-in-one; *Adam Peaty who won Gold in the Swimming 100m breaststroke to become the first Brit to win a Gold in the pool since Moorhouse in ´88; *Joe Clark who won Gold in the Canoeing, slalom K1; *Mo Farah in Athletic's successfully defending his 10,000m title; *Jason Kenny in Cycling winning the Men's individual pursuit and has a chance for a 3rd Gold later today; *Max Whitlock in Gymnastics who not only won Gold on the men's floor but also 2 hours later won gold again on the pommel horse; *Andy Murray who defended his Olympic Tennis title from London beating Argentina's Del Potro in the Final; *Charlotte Dujardin in Equestrianism winning the individual dressage with her magnificent horse, Valegro; *Nick Dempsey who took Gold in Sailing's RS:X series; * Jazz Carlin in Swimming winning Silver in both 400m and 800m freestyle; *Bryony Page for GB's first ever Silver on the Trampoline; *Becky James winning Silver in Cycling in the keirin; *Jess Ennis-Hill who took Silver in Athletic's heptathlon; *Louis Smith, Silver in Gymnastic's pommel horse coming 2nd to Whitlock; *Callum Skinner, Silver in Cycling's individual pursuit, coming 2nd to Kenny; *Mark Cavendish winning his 1st ever medal, silver in Cycling's omnium. Then there's the team Golds so congrats too to: *Sir Bradley Wiggins in the Cycling who won his 5th Gold in the team pursuit; *the Mens 8 in Rowing to take Gold for the 5th Olympics on the trot and the Mens 4 in the same sport taking Gold; *Helen Glover and Heather Stanning taking Gold in Rowing's women`s pairs; *Jack Laugher and Chris Mears who took Gold in Diving's 3m
springboard; *Kenny, yet again, leading the way to take Gold in Cycling`s mens team sprint; *Laura Trott and her team winning Gold in Cycling`s women's team pursuit. *Team GB winning Silver in the Rugby Sevens. And, finally, let's not forget those Bronze winner's in Cycling, Diving, Shooting, Judo, Gymnastics and Athletic's long jump and Women's hammer. What a complete range of Sports to have so many GB successes, so, looking great for them but elsewhere, I have to make special mention of two Olympic legends. Firstly, the USA`s Michael Phelps who announced his retirement after he won his 28th Olympic medal in the pool, including 23 Golds! And, of course, that Athletic´s legend Jamaican Usain Bolt who successfully defended his 100m title yet again and won his 3rd successive 100m gold, beating drug-cheat compatriot Gatlin on the way, and is now looking to defend his 200m Olympic title as well as leading Jamaica's 100m relay team, to add more gold to his amazing collection.
Cricket
and what a disappointment for Captain Cook's England team as they lost the final Test at the Oval, being well beaten by Pakistan. Despite yet another magnificent innings from Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow, Pakistan were well up for it and put their defeats in the 2nd and 3rd Tests behind them to win by 10 wickets and square the Series 2-2. Still, an unbeaten Test summer for England isn't a bad result but Hales and Vince have to go and we desperately need a world-class spinner especially
No One Beats The Brits At Sitting Down
Website Snappa have released an Olympics medal table reflecting only those awarded in sitting events. Classed as canoeing, cycling, equestrian and rowing, Great Britain can hold its head high and its bum low in being runaway leaders of the medals table with more than twice the Golds of our nearest competitor Germany, and over four times that of the normally all conquering world leaders in couch potato-ism, the USA.
In an image that we feel will come to define Rio, the irrepressible Usain Bolt has time for a cheeky grin towards his pursuers on his way to an astonishing 3rd consecutive 100 metre Gold.
with the winter tours to Bangladesh and India coming up but let's hope Captain Morgan's One day side can now win their upcoming ODI and 20/20 Series against Pakistan..
Football
and the Premier League got off to a rousing start at the w/end with wins for Man Utd (3-1 at Bournemouth), Liverpool (in a stunning 4-3 win at Arsenal), Chelsea (2-1 at home to West Ham), Hull ( with a surprise 2-1 home win over Champions Leicester, the first time in PL history that the champions have lost their opening day match!), Man City (with a nervy 2-1 home win over Sunderland with a pen and an own-goal!), Swansea with a 1-0 win at Burnley) and West Bromwich (with a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace). There were 1-1 draws between Everton, and Tottenham at Goodison, Southampton at home to Watford and Middlesbrough against Stoke in the North East. Early days yet, but Sky starts a new era with Friday night football on the box this week with their first match being at OT (where else!) as Jose's new-look team take on Southampton. Finally, this week Pep Guardiola and his Man City team are in Bucharest for their 1st leg Champions League Qualifying round so a bit of a comedown for the Catalan, after his exploits with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, as his team endeavour to make the Group stages. Welcome to England, ¡mi amigo! And there's only one way to go – up! Until next week

however for most people the two highlights are the spectacular firework display at midnight on the 24th August and the annual Romans V Carthaginians fiesta on Friday 2nd September from 6pm-2am including the inauguration of the fiesta with kids events, music, and DJ’s building up for the main event of the pitched tomato battle on Saturday 3rd September 2016. The fireworks can be seen from most coastline areas from San Antonio and the Bay of San Antonio and those wanting frontline views of men in skirts throwing vegetables at each other need to take their positions on the S’Arenal beach promenade.
Fireworks 24th August
San Antonio’s Sant Bartomeu Fiestas A full programme of the fiestas is available from the San Antonio website. You can read on page 11 why we have not detailed them all here,
Many of the waterfront bars and restaurants in the bay will have special dinners on the night of Sant Bartomeu. Tulipan (Tulip)
The S’Arenal beachfront chic and chill ambience we love at Tulipan, is a great setting and on the night of Sant Bartomeu they are taking bookings for their prime frontline seating areas. A minimum spend of 100€ will get you comfy couches from which to watch the display, and between a few people that really is no money at all. For bookings

Villa Mercedes
Villa Mercedes are offering their regular and always excellent range of set and a la carte menus and will also be providing live music to add to the fiesta feeling. One of the great advantages of Villa Mercedes is that their stepped terrace affords plenty of unobstructed viewing positions but we would still advise to book ASAP https://www.facebook.com/ VillaMercedesibiza
Rio
Rio are San Antonio’s newest well-dressed kid on the very stylish marina block, and they have chosen the night of the fireworks for the official opening of their rooftop terrace which is bound to be a spectacular setting and in effect offering you two parties in one. With the opening of the rooftop it will be the first night that Rio can be seen in all of its glory and as a very welcome addition to the San Antonio scene, it is getting rave reviews from everybody that has visited for its food, music, arts and other events. http://www.rioibiza.com/
Rooftop Nine
Another new addition for 2016 is Rooftop Nine. As the name suggests, it’s the rooftop terrace of Sol House Ibiza Rocks hotel which opened this year following a multimillion euro refurbishment of the previous well known Pint Playa hotel. With 360 degree views, Rooftop Nine has to be up there as one of the very best viewing positions. https://www.facebook.com/ rooftopnineibiza
