Blubby Sunday There were tears on the dancefloor as Space Nightclub bade an emotional farewell with the closure of the Iconic Playa d’en Bossa venue on Sunday.

The hugely anticipated closing party brought out the masses and with them some emotional scenes, partygoers shedding a tear or few as the marathon event drew to a close Monday lunchtime. There may have been tears but there was also a huge amount of joy. The closing party of all closing parties has gained pretty well universal acclaim as the event of the year by those attending. There is no shortage of people prepared to go much further than that, with some saying it was the best

party they had ever attended. Praise of the party people has been matched by music media with rave reviews and frequent use of descriptors such as ‘a Landmark Event’. It even made the BBC news. In this issue we report on the build up, the party and the reaction. We have a great photo gallery by Robert Szczechowiak, the personal view of a non-attendee, and also a report on the complaints of neighbours. (Continued on page 8)

PSOE Call For End To “Visual Pollution” in Santa Eulària

The Socialist Municipal Group of Santa Eulària Call For Private and Public Billboards To Go

The Santa Eulalia branch of the left of centre party PSOE have announced they will demand the removal of unregulated billboards at the next council session. Citing the entry to Siesta as an example of the worst in visual pollution, the group give an exam-

ple, pictured, of a sign for municipal works that were completed 10 years ago. Their motion will “again ask the government team to review the current ordinance and implement the necessary measures in order that there is a halt in the proliferation of billboards that constitute a negative visual impact on the image of the municipality, and pose an element of environmental pollution”. Another example is given in one of the main routes into Santa Eulària, where they say “the proliferation of billboards placed haphazardly without any control or regulation limits the field of sight for drivers and hinders pedestrians, especially those with reduced mobility”. Sunday’s Children of the 80s at The Hard Rock Hotel was a special charity event with Bananarama headlining at the venue. The event was a collaboration between The Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza, Food for Ibiza and The Abel Matutes Fundación Ibiza. Entrance was free on the night if you took 2 kg of nonperishable food with you. Lots of people turned up on the night and donated 3,110 kg of food and approximately 2,800€, all of which will help Food for Ibiza to provide much-needed food over the winter for struggling families in Ibiza and Formentera. Bananarama put on a great show for over 30 minutes, treating us to many of their big hits from the 80s plus a rendition of ‘I Will Survive’, all of which went down a storm and had everyone singing along. For ‘Venus’ they invited members of the audience onto the stage to be their backing dancers, and the confetti, streamers and CO2 jets were released onto the crowd. It was a fun night and a great effort from everybody involved and everyone that donated.

Illegal Coastline Stairway Demolition in Roca Llisa The City of Santa Eulària has ordered the demolition of stairs that a developer had built illegally to go from a house in Roca Llisa to the shore of the sea. The steps were built so that the owners could avoid the need to walk over the rocks. Furthermore, the Town Council has imposed a fine of 17,300€ to the responsible party. Other illegal constructions in the same urbanization have already been demolished.

Amnesia Closing Party Late License Revoked

The Amnesia closing party this coming Saturday 8th October, has had its late license revoked by the San Antonio authorities.

Amnesia has a history of problems caused by opening and closing parties over running their allowed hours. Some have said the level of penalty they may incur for breaching regulations is inconsequential compared to the additional income they can derive by staying open. This latest move by the authorities to clamp down follows problems at last weekend’s Music On closing party which was due to close at 6am but overran until 9am. The police say they gave repeated warnings to Amnesia and in light of them not having been adhered to, they have revoked this coming weekends closing party late license, which would have allowed them to remain open until midday on Sunday, the same time as Space in Playa den Bossa last weekend. Amnesia is situated in San Rafael and comes under the authority of San Antonio.

Our thanks to Andy Bruce for this great ‘only in Ibiza’ spot. On Sunday... Five people were arrested for drug possession. 3 were arrested for being drunk and/or drugged and disorderly. There were 28 traffic offences and 5 cars were towed.

Editorial Comment

On the one hand I get that noise can be very aggravating to people. On the other hand this is another example of Ibiza needing to decide whether or not it wants the tourist income derived from party people. A factor that will have increased the annoyance to people who prefer to keep things quiet, is that the closing parties are now far more spread out. There used to be a 'closing weekend'. Now it is more a closing fortnight, with competing clubs trying to avoid competing with each other for closing party business. Perhaps a compromise solution could be to nominate a single opening and closing weekend. Clubs wanting the extended licence would have to hold their parties on those dates, thereby minimising the annoyance to residents. As a consequence it would also make the opening and closing weekends 'special' in the way they originally were. By setting the opening weekend relatively early, and closing relatively late, the town halls could also make an effort to stop the shortening of the season. Just a thought.

Sant Josep Council may ban extended opening & closing parties following 27 noise complaints.

The Council will reconsider extended hours permits for club opening and closing parties following noise complaints.

In a statement issued Monday, Sant Josep said the weekend closure of the clubs in Playa d'en Bossa had passed without notable incidents. However they said there were repeated complaints of excessive noise, particularly overnight Sunday/Monday during the Space closing party. The weekend was deemed a special operation by the local police, reinforced by Civil Protection volunteers. Police received 27 calls complaining of the noise overnight, compared to 2 calls Saturday night. Ed - There

were no statistics available as to how many thousand people had a great night out, or how much was earned by the Ibiza economy (albeit the vast majority by one company). In light of the complaints the City Council will rethink permissions granted to clubs for opening and closing parties, especially in outdoor terraces. "We know that neighbours find the noise very troublesome. This weekend it was mainly from Space where they had an unenclosed terrace open all night. This is making us rethink what we will allow after midnight, even for opening and closing parties. We will study the matter over the winter and put in place reforms that ensure better coexistence." said 1st Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the police, Paquita Ribas. The report went on to list Police activity over the weekend. On Saturday... Filed 6 actions for possession of drugs. Made 3 seizures of drugs in public. Issued 44 traffic offence reports including towing illegally parked cards. They also attended a minor fight and attended a holiday letting apartment that had loud music. Bar Marina in the Jet Hotel complex was found to be playing music on the terrace at 3am. A Supermarket was sanctioned for selling alcohol after midnight.

Why Won’t They? Dear Editor Further to all the discussion about pirate taxis. Why do the authorities allow pirate taxi drivers to operate at the airport? I am there now and I was accosted inside the airport at arrivals. I was waiting in the taxi queue outside in the taxi queue and these guys were walking up and down trying to pick up clients. I've just counted 12 pirate taxi drivers.. and it's 12.50 in broad daylight. If it's so blatant and obvious to me, why won't the authorities do something about these dangerous people who don't have the correct insurance and can be quite intimidating? This is a scandal. David Editor, thanks for your email David.

Comedy Night Cala De Bou

A rare chance to see some stand up comedy in Ibiza as the JetBou festival close their annual event with a night of UK Stand Up. JetBou sees hundreds of Jetskiers descend on San Antonio Bay for a week of excursions, displays and the favourite pastime of men tinkering with engines whilst other men watch and offer advice. The festival is centred at the Play Bella hotel, which also hosts the Comedy Night. See Poster for line up and profiles. https://www.facebook.com/ playabellacomplex

The only way, albeit a rather unsatisfactory way, I can think to answer your email is thus. If I extract the following sentence from your mail, and post it to facebook (which I have done) “If it's so blatant and obvious to me, why won't the authorities do something”, the locals living here won’t know which of a dozen issues you are talking about (which they didn’t). A lot of living here doesn’t make sense, but we seem to love it none the less.

Bake Make Dear Nick, Our thanks to everybody who came along to the bake sale on Monday, and special thanks to the helpers without whom I couldn’t manage. We raised a total of 650€ in just two and half hours, to be donated to the Anglian church. Margaret Nawaz Editor, 650€ selling buns and pies, fantastic effort as always Margaret. Dance 88/89 Playa d’en Bossa, Sankeys

Claire B

Sankeys Dance 88/89 acid house night had its closing party last Wednesday. Alfredo, Graeme Park, Bushwacka, Mr C and Danny Rampling were responsible for keeping everyone dancing, and that is what they did! With giant smileys and pills hanging from the ceiling setting the tone for the night, the atmosphere was great and it was clear that most people had come to listen to the iconic DJs on the line-up and were there to dance. And it was nice to see Sankeys boss man David Vin-

cent happily dancing in his own club and Mr C and Bushwacka dancing along to Graeme Park before they played back to back. A testament to good music being played by DJ legends. Most of the regular nights at Sankeys have now had their closing parties, but the good news is that David Vincent had decided to keep the club open as long as possible and support the increasingly extended seasons of recent years. Unusual Suspects and Tribal Sessions continue up until 27th and 29th October respectively with Tribal being a Halloween special. Entrance to Sankeys Ibiza is always free for residents upon presentation of proof at the door.

Sunday 2nd/Monday 3rd October 2016 Continued from Front Page Nick Gibbs

The Run Up ‌ Anticipation had been building in the weeks prior to the closing party and despite the 100₏ entrance fee, tickets were by far the hottest of the year. Demand for online tickets was such that the Space website was overwhelmed and crashed and other ticket selling hubs reported difficulty coping with the traffic. Following this initial online release, it was announced that no further tickets would be available through any other outlet than on the door, on the day. Inevitably, this led to big queues, although some will have been surprised that entry for most people was, though taking a time, was a relatively painless exercise. In gauging social media reaction the overwhelming view is that the price and the queue was well worth the experience. Such a buzz was coming out of Space overnight on social media that many of those who had elected not to go were waking up to find friends having such a good time that they went along on the morning, still paying 100₏ entry with only two or three hours remaining. We have to give the award of Ibiza blagger of the

year to resident singer/strummer Nell Shakespeare who, having arrived on Monday morning is to the best of our knowledge, the only person to have achieved free entry on the door through what must be premier league blagging skills.

The Reviews ‌ MixMag

“I

n a nutshell, the 19 hours we spent at Space – yes, 19 hours – were simply unforgettable. Although not for the faint hearted, getting around the club was at times a lengthy expedition and meeting people wasn't easy. The adventuring became part of the experience, part of the charm. Any Ibiza veteran who's visited closing parties before will be able to tell you that they're always an epic and at times testing event but everyone knew the importance of this one. “Dancers of all generations were in attendance: young upstarts right through to the seasoned ravers, drenched in glitter and bright colours, the ones who helped contribute towards everything Ibiza is now. Along with all of them, we danced, laughed and smiled. And we shared a

“T

he Sunset Terrace was transformed. It fit my image of the old Space Terrace: colourful characters of all ages spread across a breezy, sprawling dance floor with various gradients, responding to every new track or drop with screams and a wave of flailing arms. The vibe was loose and insanely feel-good. I saw punters collecting glasses for the cleaning staff in exchange for selfies, while Space die-hards scribbled farewell love notes on the front of the booth. Around 9 AM, during my final stint in there, resident Paul Reynolds threw down jams like Lovebirds' "Want You In My Soul" and Joey Negro's remix of Christopher Cross's "Ride Like The Wind," while the warm morning sun mixed with the cool air from the giant fans.“ “But by that point it was about more than the music. I have to admit I've found Space difficult to love over the years: as impressive as it is, it's always felt too professional, too clinical, too much of a well-oiled machine. The closing, though, was wilder and more euphoric than most parties I've been to in Ibiza, and everyone I spoke to said the same. It was a fitting send off for a club that has meant so much to so many over the years, one that's shaped the careers of countless artists and promoters. During those final moments in the Discoteca, as thousands danced in a tornado of lasers and CO2 spray, something Cox had said earlier suddenly shot into focus. "Ibiza will never be the same again, you know it." Read Carlos Hawthorn’s excellent review here

https://www.residentadvisor.net/reviews/19964 Alongside such recognition in the music industry and Ibiza networks, the closing was of sufficiently import significance to have made the BBC news that covered the closings in some depth.

The Locals ‌ Social media in Ibiza now seems to have handed itself over entirely to Space closing. “Is this facebook or spacebookâ€?, commented Hotel Es Vive owner Jason Bull. There are so many positive reports, but perhaps the most remarkable testament to the event is that we cannot recall having seen one negative account. These words from Anthony McDowell, proprietor of the Candy Apple Bar in San Antonio, are representative of the views held by many.

“S

pace Closing was the perfect club night for me, tune after tune, classic after classic especially the last couple of hours in the Discoteca.... Everybody singing along to some of the best dance music that has ever graced our ears... “There was an energy in there on Monday morning that I've never felt before in a club, absolute nostalgia at it's finest!! “A huge salute to anyone and everyone I met in that cauldron of emotion... The club might now be gone but the memories of that night will certainly last forever!!! The closing party DJ line-up may have broken some kind of record for most DJ’s playing in that given time (Continued on page 9)

period. There were many well-known island residents included on the bill. Jonny Flipflop said,

“N

o one can ever takeaway the fact that I played in space and I was at the last ever party!!!That is something I will brag about until I can't brag no more !!!!!! “Big love to everyone involved special mention to Carlos Jaimenacho Gonthalez who made people's dreams come true xxxxx

Paul Reynolds seemed to be flying even before the event. There was no disguising his excitement at getting the prime closing set. It is fair to say Paul made quite a few more friends Sunday, and judging by his ongoing social media, he hasn’t come down from cloud nine yet – but that seems fair enough given it’s Space.

Complaints ‌ Although there seems to be no negativity from those attending, the overnight closing party did cause some upset in the local community with people reporting of noise disturbances through the night. A total of 27 complaints were received, which has prompted the San Jose town council to talk of a winter rethinking as to whether the traditionally extended hours licenses for opening and closing parties will be allowed in future.

The Future ‌ And now we wait and see with perhaps even greater anticipation what the future of Space will be. Though Sunday was the closing party of Space as a venue in Play den Bossa, few doubt that the nightclub brand will be back at a new home in Ibiza. There has been no further news regarding the pro-

posed San Antonio development, which is currently in a state of legal limbo regarding permission granted by the previous San Antonio town hall.

The Bloke Who Didn’t Go …

That would be me. So should I feel the pressure of a thousand peers burning into my back? Do I regret not going? We’ll come to that. But first my reasoning, and anecdote or two. The bulk of the text to follow was written six weeks ago. I had intended to complete it with another tale or two, but as is too often the case, never got to it. Best crack on. The printers are waiting.

Why I Love Space, But Have Absolutely No Interest In Their Closing Party.

I love Space. I have had some great times there. Some of the very best times there. But equally I have zero interest in attending their closing party. To get the obvious out of the way, these are not the reasons I am not interested (due apologies for the double negative).

The Poem … Space Closing stirred the poet inside reader and resident Caroline Yardley.

Viva Space

Space, Our Dear friend Your church is gone! Clubbing mecca consigned to legend But your love it lives on in the hearts of minds Of those lucky enough to have worshipped You were our Mother and Father of partying Undoubtedly our most exciting friend You lead the way in lessons of kinship Joining herds, ages and creeds right to the end Your closure it leaves us redundant The most experienced ravers retired For there can never be a replacement of a dance floor so damn well admired When recalling lifes fullest experiences You utterly blazed the trail You lead the way with the DJs and the music And our memories will never be for sale The rumbling of the ground from the queue outside The exceptionally expensive drinks The Terrace, the music, the worlds best crowds The outstandingly best high jinx We are blessed to have been part of your history And we all know things will never be the same, But you’d hate us being sad so we should raise arms in thanks And carry on, hard, in your name It’s amazing you left us on such a high note But all the best things never last forever So we wish you farewell, from deep down in our techhouse hearts We love you…. y hasta la vista

Not the 99€ ticket price.

I have seen a fair amount of criticism of the 99€ price tag, OK they could have made it free entry, they could have made it a charity event, but come on – in the world of Ibiza clubbing 99€ with two free drinks is not so bad. Look at it another way, Space could have charged 150€ with no drinks and I still have little doubt they would have sold out.

Not because ‘it isn’t what it used to be’.

Of course it isn’t what it used to be. How many things are exactly the same now as they were 27 years ago? Even marmite now comes in crisp and chocolate form, and the Bisto kids are asking ‘what’s your flava?’ Progress may not always be welcome, but it is essential and inevitable. So they are not the reasons I do not want to go. As for why I love Space, I guess I am the same as many people in that I can most easily explain that by anecdote. I do not claim for one moment to be one of the very earliest Space terrace in crowd, watching Alex and Brandon mixing on gas powered cassette recorders when everybody knew each other’s name, the gear was twice as strong for a tenth of the price and if you were hard up Manuelo would always give you drinks for free. Actually whereas in most situations this sceptical sarcasm as to ‘how good it was’ might be justified, in the case of Space’s very early years I have heard enough first hand tales from people I know and trust that it really does sound as if it was that good. My Space days were way before being ‘connected’ in so far as most of us living here tend to be to some extent. My Space history is simply one of an average Joe. But perhaps that makes it a little different, most texts I am seeing on the subject are written by those who played there or have a close connection. I am sure there are many people with their own average Joe stories as to why they love Space, Here are some of mine. To the best of my recollection during years when recollection is a little sketchy.

My first Space. Naked bloke being lead by the genitals by really hot girl to industrial soundtrack.

I can’t remember what day or night it was, but I remember that on my very first visit I walked through a fairly busy terrace into an almost empty back/main room – which seemed vast with the bars forming oasis of light in the otherwise total blackness. There can have been no more than 50 people in the entire room, a very small cluster dancing to the limited appeal of some really tough industrial sounds, and the remaining, that were visible at least, silhouetted against the bar back lights. Whilst we were still taking in the surroundings one of these silhouetted couples got up from the bar at the most distant end of the room. As they made to walk across the floor of the club they came out of silhouette and it became apparent that the man was dressed only in a few leather straps, effectively naked. The girl was stunning, in huge heeled thigh high boots and a bikini, and was holding a dog lead attached to the man’s genitals. Baring in mind the most extreme clubwear I had seen in

Page 10

the UK to that point was a few glowsticks, this was quite a sight. But what struck me even more as they made their passage across the floor and past us into the terrace, was that nobody seemed to be taking much notice. We had only been in Space 5 minutes and we were watching a naked man being lead by his cock by a gorgeous girl and it seemed that it was barely noteworthy. I can remember thinking “I love this place”. The particularly odd thing about that first experience was that I never saw anything approaching that extreme again. There were some incredible outfits, some real flamboyant characters, but nothing ever at that extreme. I have no idea if it was a one off party, why they were there that day. But regardless, that was my very first experience at Space.

The Gay Canadian Pharmacist, Liquid Acid, and Emergency Services.

The text up to this point is what I had written so far. You know what, the printers really are getting twitchy now, it is past deadline, and I somehow think that might be for the best—the rest of this story , and a couple more, may be best suited to the online version only, or I’ll be looking at a level of complaints not seen since the last Tony Pike interview. Suffice it to say my connection to Space for many years was very strong. I can remember being swept out of the place on Monday mornings. Literally. When they couldn’t get rid of the last few they would bring out these huge brooms and sweep you out. All in good humour. Anyway, wasn’t like it was a problem, we were going to DC10 anyway. But the point, for me at least, is that the Space I loved is one that has passed, in the past. I haven’t really enjoyed it as a club when I’ve been recently for journalistic duties. That was then, this is now, and though I get it was to be a really big night, could it ever surpass the memories? Do I even want it to? I mean Gay Canadian Pharmacist, Liquid Acid, and Emergency Services, I can’t see it myself. I have already had my closing party, it closed for me in around 2003 I guess, It was great, and I was totally happy to leave it at that. But of course all that was before seeing and hearing how great it obviously was. So do I regret? Sure, a bit. But honestly only in the context of it being a good party this year, not being seminal. Unless anybody can tell me they noticed naked blokes being dragged by the cocks, or Liquid acid hilarity, or any one of many more superb memories I have of the place, I can’t really think I missed anything. Plus on Sunday I got to spend the first whole day with my 6 year old son in months. We went to a gig and a flea market, got milkshakes and candy floss, went to a medieval fair, went go-karting and talked a lot. That might sound wet, or old, but I wouldn’t have swapped it. That is the point. Things move on. Things change. Nightclubs. Lives. Nothing stands still. That is how it should be. Embrace it. Looking forward to writing a few more anecdotes down though. Did I mention the drug tunnel or the Italian girls? ...

GEMINI - Seven of Swords Your bright light attracts jealous attention this week; you'll find out that someone in particular is finding it difficult to be happy for your success. Keep resolutely on your chosen path. Friends who act like enemies will soon be part of your past. You're protected; it's all a bit of a test of character so dismiss detractors from your life. LEO - Four of Cups (reversed) Who are you waiting for; some hoped for person who’ll turn up, sweep you off your feet and you’ll live happy ever after? If you've been romantically 'sitting on the fence', this is the week to make an effort and invite love into your life. An Instant attraction could end up meaning far more; don't dismiss it out of hand. VIRGO - Six of Swords An upsetting episode of your life is coming to a close, so don't look back at what might of been. Emotionally, you've come a long way during a year which has tested you over and over again. Hold your head high and square your shoulders; you've no idea where life is heading, but you can now move forward with confidence. LIBRA – Two of Cups This is a very affectionate card; it's all about feeling the love this week and you will want to reciprocate in kind. Equality in relationships, whether in business or pleasure; are important to you. You want back what you're giving out. It’s a reminder however, that the trick to a successful relationship is to give the other person their space. SCORPIO - Page of Wands Study, information gathering and fact finding all are represented by this card. So this week get your thinking cap on! The health of your mind, body and spirit is calling out for discernment; a rarely used word, but one whose meaning you should heed for now. Think before you speak, rise above gossip and hold back on making judgements. SAGITTARIUS - The Fool This card doesn't signify you’re a fool indeed; often it’s the behaviour of those around you that causes your knee jerk reaction, so avoid biting back at any perceived slight. The Fool encourages you to face challenging situations and to have no fear when dealing with them. Be adventurous and bold in your decision making. Your inner light shines through. CAPRICORN - Four of Wands Time to celebrate the start of a new creative collaboration. This is very much a team spirited card enabling you to get the best people on board any new project. Reliability will be a key issue; however, this card promises smooth, hassle free dealings with others this week. For others, house moves that prove fortunate; you’ll find your dream home. AQUARIUS - Eight of Pentacles By the end of this weekly forecast, you’ll be reaching for the smelling salts as you’re working hard and are super busy. You will however, be raking it in financially so it will be churlish to complain. People like what you're doing and are willing to reward you accordingly. If you need help achieving deadlines source out for extra help. PISCES - The Lovers This is a great week for getting along with just about anyone and you're in the mood for love! The Lovers card presents us with choices between two people; two jobs; two career options; two...well, you get the picture. You’re being asked to choose from your heart and not your head, so connect with your feelings and make decisions intuitively.

Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel

The Gospel of Mark informs us that Jesus on the Via Dolorosa had some brief respite because the Roman Soldiers randomly compelled a passer-by to carry the heavy wooden crossbeam (in Latin: patibulum) for Jesus on route to the crucifixion. The Gospel of Mark is the ancient biography of Jesus written in the first century and very likely just a few years after the death of Jesus. “They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry the cross of Jesus it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. Then they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha, which is translated Place of a Skull.” (The Bible, Mark chapter 15 verses 21 & 22). It is a fascinating and mysterious piece of information. This random person compelled to carry the heavy wooden crossbeam – his name is known to the author of the Gospel (Simon of Cyrene) and he is specifically said to be the “father of Alexander and Rufus”. He was from the Jewish community in Cyrene in North Africa. Perhaps he was a pilgrim to Jerusalem for the festival of Passover. The Gospel of Mark is most likely to have been composed in Rome and, initially at least, for the early Gentile and Jewish followers of Jesus. It seems very likely then that Alexander and Rufus were known to the community of Jesus followers in Rome! It is probable then that Alexander and Rufus became followers of Jesus. Perhaps their father, Simon, randomly compelled to carry the heavy crossbeam, became himself a follower of Jesus and that he introduced his sons Alexander and Rufus to the faith in Jesus. St. Paul in his letter to the community of Jesus followers in Rome mentions a certain Rufus: “Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and great his mother – a

mother to me also.” (Romans 16:13). The discovery of an ossuary ( a bone box! ) bearing the names Simon & Alexander & the place name Cyrene may be remarkable evidence that the crypt of the family of Simon of Cyrene has actually been discovered by archaeologists! The ossuary was discovered in 1941 in the Kidron Valley. On the back of the ossuary is the inscription in Aramaic: “Alexander Son of Simon” and on the lid “from Cyrene”. No other “Alexander Son of Simon from Cyrene” has been found in ancient texts or from archaeology. Perhaps the moral in this is: don’t ignore the seemingly random event that may lead you to Jesus! Shebizan Welcome to this week’s instalment of Amanda Zips It Up. So we’re officially autumnal, and it’s time to unpack sweaters and boots. It’s also time to start taking care of your skin, as the climate becomes more unforgiving. I decided to book myself in for a facial, as the summer tan has fad-

ed and I’m looking as washed out as the jeans I’ve just yanked out the back of my wardrobe. I don’t get too many spots these days (she says, not revealing her age) but if I do, I

don’t mind a harmless squeeze. But here’s what my beautician revealed, which made me almost jump out of my skin. It turns out that harmlessly squeezing a spot isn’t so harmless after all, if it’s in a certain region of the face. You shouldn’t get rid of ones in the ‘danger triangle’ portion of your face, according to dermatologists. We’ve all heard stories about squeezed spots leaving scars, but this problem could be far more severe – and it could even kill you. The corners of your mouth and the top of your nose make up a triangle shape on your face, and that’s the area you need to be careful

with. Squeezing spots inside the triangle is dangerous because blood vessels in the area are in direct connection to your brain. Which means that infections developed there could go straight to the central nervous system. In extremely rare cases, an infection could lead to vision loss, paralysis or death. Experts say that if you notice an infection in the area you should

contact a doctor right away. Don’t say I never do anything for you. That little nugget of info could well save your bacon! On that bombshell, lets move on to this week’s blog. Paris Fashion Week, the changing face of Ibiza plus much more fashion and beauty. Feet up, relax and enjoy. x Read Amanda’s fashion blog http://amandazipsitup.com/

Stella & Kim’s Paris Fashion Week Drama

So, everyone is almost done showing their Spring / Summer 2017 collections at the fashion weeks. This final week it’s the turn of Paris. As I wrote this article, my initial plan was to bring you news of Stella McCartney’s new range at Paris Fashion Week, but it was eclipsed by Kim Kardashian’s horror at being held up at gunpoint in her hotel room. The downside of having a constant social media presence is that everyone knows exactly where you are, and what your jewellery looks like. A mood lifter was not far off though. Stella McCartney’s show was an up-beat, energetic offering which ticked all the designer's boxes in fresh and exciting style. Sporty elements were everywhere – drawstring waist details on wide cut trousers, hooded blouses, long sleeved tracky tops in ‘ultra-suede’ (i.e.: not real), easy T-shirt shaped dresses, bold printed leggings were worn under dresses, and even beneath a sheer white boiler suit. There were also plenty of pinstripe shirts, as well as gorgeous oversized earthytoned trench coats. McCartney featured a slogan print emblazoned with ‘Thanks Girls’, maybe a nod to her successful dressing of this summer’s Olympic team. Other slogans included ‘no fur and no leather’ signifying the house’s commitment to being cruelty free. Back to that ultra-suede – which looks exactly like the real thing. After the show, when questioned if it was indeed faux, an enlivened McCartney moaned: “the fact you have to ask goes to show why the f*** do we use real suede? Why are we killing so many animals when you can’t even tell the difference? And you can wash it in the machine, it’s very practical.” The show had a carnival atmosphere and the models came out dancing. Even Anna Wintour was grinning throughout. Never thought we’d see that day.

The Changing Face Of Ibiza

As we reach the end of the summer season 2016, it’s time to reflect on a period of change in Ibiza. There’s no doubting Ibiza is busy. Tourist numbers are up 11 per cent from last year. Hotels are fully booked and Ibiza airport dealt with 1,390,009 passengers in August alone. The White Isle is still

a top, top destination when summer arrives. Ibiza’s renowned as the party capital of the world, but its clubs and dancefloors are changing. Space is closing as I write this piece, Pacha is up for sale and the mega money VIP culture is well and truly engrained. Is this an identity crisis or is the island is simply going through a massive period of change? What can we expect from the Ibiza 2017 season?

POOL PARTIES

It’s been heading that way for a few years, but biggest trend

of Ibiza 2016 has been the shift towards outdoor daytime clubbing. Think Ushuaïa, Ibiza Rocks and Ocean Beach Club. Pool party afternoons and beach clubs are the new alfresco cool.

SAN ANTONIO GIVES IT AWAY

Eden and Es Paradis have been offering free entry on certain nights to stem the daytime tide. Whilst Space’s rumoured San An opening in 2018 may well reinvent the town

The Ibizan, Thursday 6th October 2016, Issue 847

as a night time clubbing destination, the town's existing nightclubs have needed to adopt a new business model.

MORE FESTIVAL STYLE EVENTS

Dance music festivals are huge all over the world. Elrow at Space has been road blocked in Ibiza this year. Expect more alternative parties to surface in 2017, as Ibiza attempts to recreate the concept of a weekend festival into a night-time event.

THE PROMOTER

In recent years, the nightclubs have been going straight to the talent and cutting out the promoter. This year the promoter is back. Danny Gould and Andy Manston have resurrected the infamous Clockwork Orange parties and they are as important as the DJs they bring on-board. The busiest parties on the island this summer have been Elrow at Space, Music-On at Amnesia, Glitterbox at Space and my favourite Craig David’s TS5 Pool Party at Ibiza

links are live in the online edition at theibizan.com

Rocks These are all promoter-led parties and not in-house events.

CHEFS & DJS

Fine dining and fabulous cuisine are almost as popular as Ibiza’s nightclub culture. Can the two become one? One of the best examples of this fusion of dining with music can be seen at Heart Ibiza, where Spain’s leading celebrity chef Ferràn Adrià, and Guy Laliberté, the founder of Cirque du Soleil, share the limelight with top DJs like Sven Väth and Richie Hawtin. Here’s proof of a promoter matching your taste buds along with the atmosphere of a dance floor. I expect to see more chef and DJ collaborations in 2017, as promoters and venues jump on this new concept. It will be interesting to see if the whole VIP Vegas thing remains or whether we revert back to the more relaxed, bohemian and spiritual scene, which ruled Ibiza long before I landed. I suspect that’s gone for good.

Triple Denim

I’ve written about Double Denim before, paying homage to the late 90s and early noughties. Just think B*Witched or Britney and Justin – if you’re old enough. It was all about jeans and a denim shirt, or a denim skirt and denim jacket. Well, fast forward to today, and everyone from Chanel to Miu Miu have sent denim galore down the catwalk for their autumn/ winter’16 collections. But we’re not talking double denim anymore. It’s time to up the game to TRIPLE DENIM. Leading the trend is Rihanna, who was recently spotted in New York in a mid-length denim asymmetric dress over jeans – both by Balenciaga – with denim boots from her collaboration with Monolo Blahnik. Looks too much? The key is not to mix tones. Stick to one wash and pile it on.

Page 13

Channel your inner Gigi Hadid in a denim triad, topped off with a classic Levi’s jacket or a denim skirt. Personally, I love a pair of denim heels – not as naff as they once were. Denim may be a staple, but it’s a trend that’s not so basic anymore.

Wrong way, Rosburg at T1, and on back page, Hamilton on his way back to the pits. "Someone needs to give me some answers because this is not acceptable. We are fighting for the championship and only my engines are failing. It does not sit right with me." Hamilton was cruising to victory on an unexpected one-stop strategy when his engine literally went up in smoke. He had converted pole into a lead at the first corner, and the day seemed to be going his way when Rosberg was hit by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel as a move to try to pass Verstappen down the inside went wrong. Rosberg re-joined at the back and set about climbing back through the field as Hamilton appeared to be set fair to reclaim the championship lead. An early virtual safety car when Romain Grosjean's Haas suffered apparent brake failure tempted Red Bull to bring Verstappen in early for fresh 'soft' tyres. That made him de facto leader for a while, a position he assumed on track when Hamilton made his first pit stop on lap 20. But he stopped again seven laps later and, from then on, Hamilton appeared in total control, only for his car to suffer an internal combustion engine failure. Team boss Toto Wolff held his head in his hands in the pits as Hamilton walked disconsolately away from his smouldering car. Mercedes said there had been no warning of the problem.

Driver Championship Standings

Malaysian GP Lewis Hamilton's title hopes were dealt a heavy blow when his engine failed as he led the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Briton dominated the race until flames started pouring from his Mercedes on lap 43, prompting him to say on the radio: "Oh, no, no." His team-mate Nico Rosberg finished third

1 to extend his lead in the championship to 23 points with five races to go, and 125 points available. Daniel Ricciardo beat Max Verstappen in a Red Bull one-two in a gripping race. After the race, Hamilton said "My question is to Mercedes. We have so many engines made, but mine are the only ones failing this year.

Ryder Cup Meltdown!

Helluva w/end for me and Mrs P as have just moved in to a new villa in San Agustin. Why, oh why, doesn't somebody start up a decent property removal business over here as we've moved twice now in 17 years and each time have basically had to do it ourselves with a little bit of help from friends, but, oh dear, what a nightmare as we travelled to and fro 9 times taking up the best part of 3 days! (Ed - There are several on the local services page Jerry. Though some are dependent on being in Ibiza, I know Ibiza Transport Services are here pretty well permanently) Anyway, on the plus side, would you believe that all the services that we had booked for installation on Monday (Sky TV, telephone lines and wifi) all turned up on time and all did a grand job in double quick time, so our thanks to Paul at Fusion, Francisco at IMBA and Movistar. As for the latter, amazing, as I only ordered the change last Friday so 4 days must be a record and keeping my old numbers! Anyway, enuff of that and on to my raison d'etre and in

a slight case of inexperience methinks for Darren Clarke's Team Europe as they were taken apart by the USA in the biannual Ryder Cup, losing 17-11, the first time the Americans had won since 2008. Having said that, the score line slightly flattered the US as it was a lot closer than the score suggested. Not only that but some great golf was played, with the highlights really centred on Spain's Sergio Garcia. Firstly, partnering compatriot

Ibiza C.C. vs Allenton C.C. (Derby) Robin Parmenter 24/09, 30 overs each. Allenton 159/5 beat Ibiza, 157/8, by 5 wickets. Ibiza were put in to bat first and openers Sam Gooda (66) and Tim Stacey (34) set up a useful partnership of 83 runs, before the latter was caught, leaving Ibiza on 86/1 off 15 overs. Then, as so often happens after a drink’s break, several wickets fell, including Sam Gooda, and it was only Pete Essex (20) and Robin Parmenter (13) thereafter who reached double figures. Ibiza’s innings finally closed on 157/8, which was at least 20 runs short. It was also a destructive spell of bowling from Chris Dawson, with an impressive 5 for 6 runs, that caused the hosts’ rapid loss of wickets. Bowlers Jamie Guthrie and Halley Porkess contributed a wicket each. Allenton then batted steadily, despite losing two early wickets, to reach 63/2 off 15 overs, so below the required run rate, with a solid 38 from opener Mark Webster. They still

Cabrera- Bella in the four balls on Friday afternoon, they were facing absolute annihilation by Spieth and Reed and with 6 holes to play were 4 down. However, after some inspired play, reminiscent of that other brilliant Spanish Cup pairing of Seve and Jose Maria, they reeled off 4 birdies to draw level with a hole to play and were unlucky not to win the match. Sergio and American Phil Mickelson then played a magnificent round of golf in the singles on Sunday as each player birdied and matched each other all the way through 18 holes with neither player giving an inch to eventually halve the match. Brilliant! In the end tho', inexperience of the unique Ryder Cup atmosphere and tension did tilt the balance as Clarke's pick of 6 rookies was the main difference between the teams but at least the debutants will learn and no doubt, do better in France in 2018 when, hopefully, Europe will get their revenge. As for the Yankee crowd with their heckling, rowdiness and general unsporting and one-sided behaviour the small minority should really have been chucked out and banned from attending any future RC matches. Wouldn't happen in Europe - would it?! Going to skip Rugby Union this week as

took preference as two great semis took place last week for the Final of the Super League which will feature Warrington, who beat St Helens and Wigan, who overcame Hull so should be a classic. As for the Million Pound relegation final between Hull KR and Salford, yet another classic, as the latter won 19-18 with a golden point drop goal in extra time to stay up after the full time score of 18 apiece.

and what an embarrassment for England manager Allardyce as he was given the boot after being secretly filmed explaining how some managers are, allegedly, able to take backhanders to ease thru' transfers. Sorry, but I never thought he was a good pick for England in the first place but at least he's needed just under 100 runs to win, and, after losing another 3 quick wickets, it seemed they would fall short. But Jamie Guthrie then opened up and took advantage of some loose Ibiza bowling to increase the scoring and help the visitors to 159/5, winning in the 28th over. He finished just short of a deserved century, on 96 not out, in an unbroken stand of 73 runs with skipper Phil Coxon (12 not out). Of the Ibiza bowlers, Mike Amos stood out with 2/15, ably supported by Jim Harvey and skipper Paul Cruttwell with a wicket apiece. This match was in fact a close contest and showed how quickly a game of cricket can turn, as well as Ibiza’s rusty batting and bowling, after the lengthy 3 month summer break. 25/09, 30 overs each. Ibiza,147/8, beat Allenton, 146/4, by 1 wicket. Ibiza chose to field first and were determined to put pressure on the visitors from the start. Thus, in spite of some lusty blows from all rounder Chris Dawson (40), Allenton were kept to 70/1 off the first 15 overs. A couple of wickets then fell, bringing Allenton’s star batsman Jamie Guthrie to the crease. He resisted well once again with 36 not out, but could not score as fast as the day before, and was well supported by Halley Porkess (17), and Srini Murali (24 not out). However, the Ibiza bowling was controlled and the fielding alert, so that Allenton were restricted to a conservative 146/4 off their 30 overs. Mike Amos (2/27) and Pete Essex (2/24) had

come out with two massive credits, firstly, a £1 million payoff (why?) and secondly he's left a legacy of a 100% record of played 1, won 1! I feel sorry for recently appointed Gareth Southgate as the position seems to be a poisoned chalice but good luck to him and at least he'll start with a simple World Cup qualifying match against those world giants Malta! As for the Premier League, whoops Pep, not as easy as you thought eh, after his 100% record was sent down in flames by Tottenham at The Lane, as Spurs deservedly ran out 2-0 winners. This on top of a pretty abject display against Celtic in the Champions League last week so are miniscule cracks appearing one has to ask. Arsenal are now in 3rd as they were extremely fortunate to beat Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor as their winning goal came from a handball, while Liverpool won at Swansea 2-1 with a late penalty, which prompted the owners to sack their likeable manager Guidelin and replace him with Bob Bradley, who, I think I'm right in saying, is the first American manager in the Premier. Loadsa draws in the league last week, starting with Everton dropping to 5th as they could only draw 1-1 at Goodison while Man Utd did the same at OT against Stoke, West Bromwich drew 1-1 with bottom team Sunderland who took only their 2nd point from a possible 21, champions Leicester are suffering a bit at the mo' as they couldn't break down the Southampton defense at the KC to end in a scoreless draw, Watford drew 2-2 at home to Bournemouth and West Ham at last secured a point at home, this time in a 1-1 stalemate with Middlesboro'. Finally, Chelsea got back to winning ways as they won 2-0 at Hull with Costa scoring his 6th goal in 7 games to lead the charts. The Premier takes a break now as World Cup qualifying takes centre stage with the aforementioned 3 Lions taking on Malta at Wembley, same Group Scotland against Lithuania, Wales in Austria, Northern Ireland at home to San Marino and the Republic of Ireland in Dublin against Georgia. 'Tis all for now, until next week........Jezza

the most success, and were assisted by tight bowling throughout. It was then Ibiza’s turn to bat, and they had to make do without either opener this time, losing several quick wickets as a result. Indeed, only Kiwi newcomer Chris Pratt (15) reached double figures, with Ibiza on 22/4 and in some trouble. However, the returning Graeme Cooper then struck an aggressive 65 and shored up the hosts’ innings. When he was eventually bowled, the score was 97/7, and Ibiza still needed 50 runs off 12 overs, with only 2 wickets remaining and one player unable to bat. The stage was set for lower order batsmen Jim Harvey (19 not out), Mike Amos (12) and skipper Paul Cruttwell (14 not out) to negotiate the tricky target, and it was fitting that the latter hit 2 boundaries in the 29th over to ensure Ibiza made up for their defeat the day before, and win an exciting contest by one wicket! Many thanks to Allenton skipper Phil Coxon, and Rob & Karen Guthrie for bringing their team and several wives and families to Ibiza for a most enjoyable and friendly weekend of cricket. We wish them all the best as their club is being wound up after 40 years, and hopefully this will not prevent them returning to Ibiza in the future! RPHood

Sport Winter Pool League

The twitching cue fingers of Ibiza’s pool players need twitch no more as the uber competitive Ibizan Pool League gets underway on the 13th October. Of the founding teams The Fish, The Ship, El Siteo (now Boulevard) and Father Jacks, only Father Jacks are yet to lift the title, perhaps this will be their year? Stevie D’s, The Storeroom and Boulevard are again fielding two teams though those who love Dicks and Chicks will be saddened to see that this year a rather less pun worthy A & B team are being fielded by Stevie D’s. With the seemingly invincible Boulevard winning the league again in 2016, people will be watching newly joined Illusions with interest. The league’s first team from Ibiza town, Illusions is a genuine multi-table pool hall on the Parc de la Paz and so should be able to put out a strong team. Unique in Ibiza, Illusions is well worth a visit for anybody who loves to hear clacking balls, which will at least go some way to make up for the loss of Chicks and Dicks.

Hamilton Blow

Lewis Hamilton, pictured riding entirely the wrong type of vehicle back to the pits, was not happy after his shock engine failure exit in the Malaysian Grand Prix. Talking to the BBC after the race he said “my question is to Mercedes, we have so many engines made, but mine are the only ones failing this year…, this does not sit well with me”. This leaves Hamilton with 265 points behind Rosberg on 288 with 5 races remaining. Full report on page 15.
