Editorial Some Christmas Things, Some Interesting Things, Some Statistical Things & Some Newspaper Things. Nick Gibbs

Feeling Festive? I may have more reason than most to be feeling full of Christmas cheer having spent a lot of time compiling our Christmas agenda and content this week. It really is amazing how much public entertainment and activity is provided by the Island’s municipalities. Ibiza’s population of 132,000 is very similar to my home town Ipswich at 138,000. I would have been impressed if the town had done anything comparable to that in Ibiza Town, San Antonio, Santa Eulalia or Formentera individually, but if you took all the events of all municipalities and pooled them together it really would make my home town’s efforts, a tree on the Cornhill and a night of yuletide serenades by the chamber music ensemble, seem as feeble by comparison as they truly are. Though San Jose and San Juan put out less of a programme over Christmas, perhaps because they do not have the same town ’hub’ as the other 4, they make up for it throughout the year. Some people complain of too many Spanish Fiesta days, and two this week certainly does have its business challenges, but personally I think the more the merrier. Better a society that says any excuse for a party than one who doesn’t really understand how to have one.

Shop Til You Drop

There is one aspect of the Christmas holiday that Ipswich Borough Council do actively promote that you will not see in any of our island’s plans for Nadal. I remember the first time Thursday late night shopping was introduced in the weeks before Christmas, and what a success it was. There is a key difference in the way we do Navidad and the British do Christmas. Looking on from afar it feels as if the whole country is gripped in a madness of consumerism. Our ’any excuse for a party’ seems to be echoes in their ’any excuse for more shopping’. Not content with the already high level of spending over Christmas and into the January sales, they can’t wait to latch on to any new way to buy more, spend more, and do it all so efficiently they have more time to do more shopping. Black Friday, Online Sunday, Withdrawal Wednesday, I’m a Complete Mug Monday, and all of which can be done in a bewildering array of ‘the easier we make it, the more you’ll do it’ options. In store, home delivery, same day home delivery, pay and collect in store, pay and drive slowly past the shop with your window open and something will throw it in to save you stopping. Utter madness. The difference in approach was highlighted by one of several statistical news items I worked on this week. In a survey on Christmas spending habits it was found the UK spends most in Europe, 963.86€ per household and Spain comes in last at

under half that with a figure quoted of 414.54€. I put a question out on facebook and it seems many people have similar views. Asked what it was people liked about spending Christmas in Ibiza, many of the responses were more to do with it being ‘not the U.K.’.

Santa Sleigh Front Page

With all the festive events in Ibiza it was no wonder Santa decided to pop in and see what all the fuss was about. Actually I at time of writing this I am worries as to how the ’amazing photograph taken by the space station on a flypast’ will reproduce in print as this year’s Christmas front cover. If you are reading this in the printed copy and wondered why we had a front page design of exploded ink bottle, it is actually Ibiza from space with Santa rising in his sleigh from Salinas. Try squinting.

Love From Ibiza

Had I have known Santa was coming I’d have asked him to take over my duties as his temporary stand in at the Charity Christmas Fair organised by Love from Ibiza and held at La Muella on Saturday. Another amazing thing about our Ibiza community is the effort people go to for worthy causes. A brilliantly organised and attended event. Carly has written a full report for us in this week’s newspaper so I will not go through the long list of people who deserve credit again here, but deserving it is. It was a real pleasure to take my place in the grotto and the day was made all the more enjoyable by having the world’s best elf, Julia Daniels, at my side. The children were brilliant, some really funny requests and comments which you can read on page 14. Reward enough in itself, especially the teeny tot who said “I love you farver kissmas”, but when I read the post by Lisa Grimm (see photo with article on page 14) I shall self indulgently say it really made my day. Great fun.

Numbers Game

Though not so much fun as the Christmas festivities it has been a very interesting edition in some of the content coming through, and even taking account of the end of year reporting, a far higher amount than normal has been statistical and numerical. The official FRONTUR tourist statistics have been released to the end of October and so we can now give an accurate number following the widespread mis-reporting of Ibiza attracting 7.1 million visitors when an article in the Diario was incorrectly translated by some Ibiza web services a few weeks back. The correct figure of 2,976,087

is 12.6% up on the previous year. Though this will still be seen as good news by many, there is an increasing number of people who will be worried about the island’s ability to cope with ever increasing numbers. Though saturation may be a problem peak season, most will be very pleased to see the 33% increase in numbers in March and October, good news for extending the season. Another figure that jumps out is the importance of the British market. At 840k we are by far the biggest nationality, broadly equal to the next 3 foreign countries, Italy Germany and France combined. In property news we received conflicting content with an announcement that the 100% mortgage was again available, and at the same time warnings of another price bubble. It became interesting to me when I did a bit of digging into the regional property prices and gathered some data for Ibiza in Isolation of its Balearic neighbours. Though usually published by region, Ibiza is a unique market and the price you will pay for a house here is not influenced in any way by the cost of houses in Majorca. Though there is no official data collected for Ibiza as an island, there is for two of its municipalities and as expected it shows a much higher price per square metre, a price comparable to Spain’s most expensive region Cantabria. I then applied the information to the position of a new home buyer in Ibiza, the needs of a young family as they would be in any other area of the country. I found the result startling. My example 3 bed property is 205m2 and situated in Can Misses. A modest home for a young family, you certainly wouldn’t call it a palace. To buy this house a young couple would need to find 120,000€ deposit, plus around 80,000€ to cover taxes. If they ever could raise the 200,000€ to buy the property, they would then have a 25 year mortgage with a monthly repayment of 2,083€ You can see why native Ibicencos are concerned for their children’s future. There were several more money and statistical news items, but I have a feeling that one piece of information, that carried very little relative importance in the Spanish press, may have a few local businessmen spluttering into their breakfast cortado when they read it. As part of a range of measures to combat fraud and corruption, the new Spanish Government have announced they intend to prohibit cash transactions of over 1,000€ in an effort to curb the use of ‘black-money’.

Ramon Llull

Another article I enjoyed working on greatly was that of a special feature on Ramon Llull. It is fair to say Llull does not have the cool cachet associated

Page 2

with some of the Balearics’ very earliest superstars, Tanit, Bes and the gang, nor the smouldering sex appeal of the pirates to follow, but it turns out he is a very interesting Balearian indeed. I like any story when learning something new and his life was packed of it. (I also learnt of Balearian as the correct collective pronoun for a person from the Balearics. Balearian is to Ibizan, as baleárico is to ibicenco). I knew of Llull as a Catalan writer, he is considered to have written the first major piece of Catalan literature, but had no idea of his connection to the origins of computing. This is due to his using a ‘logic tree’ in his work on a mission to convert Muslims, Jews, anybody he came across really, to Christianity. Though we may not find the missionary a particularly sympathetic role by modern standards, Llull also has some credentials that make him something of a visionary in the 13th century. Llull promoted the idea that the ‘conversion of Muslims should be achieved through prayer, not through military force”.

Immaculate Conception

Appropriate I should be working on Llull in the week the Spanish celebrate the immaculate conception of Mary as this was a large part of his religious work, he is considered to be the first person to actually use that expression. I found his theory in this respect far less creditable than in the areas of Logic and Literature. His extended arguments for the proof of the immaculate conception seem to all be around the principle that it must have been immaculate because she was so special to be carrying the child of God that it could have only be possible if it were immaculate. It is mind blowing stuff that takes a few reads, I didn’t include it in the article as a bit heavy, but worth a read to anybody interested in Philosophy.

Newspaper Things

Having made the change to a monthly paid edition for the winter months, I have written a FAQ covering the reasons for the change and some practical information. This follows below for those who are interested. In closing and on behalf of everybody connected with the Ibizan we wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Why change at all? Primarily economics. Printing a newspaper is expensive. Though there are plenty enough English speaking residents in Ibiza during the winter to warrant a newspaper, there are far fewer advertisers looking to reach them. The newspaper has never made a good commercial argument to print through the winter. Readers may remember that before the change in name it had reduced down to just 8 pages in winter. We are the same as many businesses that earn their livelihood in the summer from the boost given by tourism, and though we would like to continue to serve the resident market in winter, it has to be in a commercially viable context. The economics of print are such that it is far cheaper to print a 32 page newspaper monthly than it is to print the same quantity of an 8 page newspaper weekly. This reduction in overheads is also in the context of alternative ways to serve news online. We have not reduced our news output. We have not reduced our readership. But we have changed it.

What else has changed? Our digital readership is now more or less equal to our print readership. Many people who enjoy reading a physical newspaper will also use online news services, and they will continue to see our news whether we are printing daily, weekly or monthly. Given the immediacy of online news and social media there is little difference publishing a weekly or monthly. In a digital world even a daily newspaper is out of date by the time it hits the streets. This requires a different approach to printed news. In the majority of situations the newspaper will no longer be the source of breaking news, as in ‘where you heard it first’. The newspaper will be a format where a story or article can become more in depth, where it can be fully read comfortably and with the aid of always in view visuals etc. It will also serve as a recap, a summary of recent news, and an agenda and planner for forthcoming news and events. What a newspaper cannot do any longer is try to be the source of ‘you heard it here first’. This is much like the purpose of a traditional Sunday newspaper and a good way to think of it. I hope that the last and current issue will reflect at least a move towards that.

Is it worth 1,20€? We hope so, but that is for you to decide. If you do not think so please tell us. Any comments, suggestions or requests always gratefully received.

News Government announces tax hikes in bid to raise an extra €4.6 billion Popular Party administration will increase duty on tobacco and sugary drinks 1,000€ cash transaction limit as part of measures to combat ‘Black Money’ The Spanish Cabinet has approved the budget plan that it will send to the European Commission, with the aim of guaranteeing that the government sticks to its promise to bring down its deficit next year. Spain has committed to making an adjustment of around €16 billion in 2017, to reduce its public deficit to 3.1% of GDP. To do so the budget includes a number of tax rises, including those related to company tax as well as special levies on tobacco, high-grade alcohol (beer and wine are not affected), and a new duty on sugary drinks. With these measures, the government is hoping to raise around €4.6 billion. With these changes we will see revenues from the tax of around €25 to €26 billion The minority Popular Party (PP) government has negotiated these measures with the major parties in Congress, but was able to get them through thanks to a deal with the main opposition Socialist Party (PSOE). The PP won most votes at two general elections held in the last year, but failed to secure a majority. As such it will now have to seek support in Congress from other parties in order to pass legislation and get things done.

The majority of the increased revenues will stem from company tax, through which an additional €4.3 billion is expected to be collected. The government will do this by limiting the fiscal benefits of the regulations, bringing it into harmony with new criteria set out by Brussels. The new levies on tobacco and alcohol are expected to raise €350 million “With these changes we will see revenues from the tax of around €25 to €26 billion,” said Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro on Friday. As he himself admitted, this figure is far from the pre-crisis numbers of 2008, when the duty brought in around €44 billion. The new levies on tobacco and alcohol are expected to raise €350 million, while duty will also rise on cigarettes (2.5%) and rolling tobacco (6%). The tax on sugary drinks, which are being targeted more and more by health campaigners, will also raise around €200 million. These types of taxes target what experts call “negative externalities,” or the costs suffered by a third party via consumption of taxed items, in this case because of detrimental effects on health. Montoro also announced that measures to combat tax fraud are expected to raise a further €2 billion, while a limit on the amount that can be paid in cash for a transaction to €1,000 is also expected to have an effect on tax evasion and reduce the widespread use of so-called “black money.”

2017 Budget Prioritises Public Transport with 4.7 Million Euro Investment The Consell de Ibiza plans to double the budget for improving public transport next year. Specifically, the institution plans to allocate a total of 4.7 million euros to this service, "an investment that has never been achieved", said Consell president, Vicente Torres, in the presentation of the accounts for 2017. Of the 4.7 million transport budget, 1.5 million will be allocated to improving bus stops, both school and regular lines. The introduction of the tariff integration system is also foreseen in the first quarter of the year, and there are plans for the implementation of new lines and transport to meet growing demand, as well as the connection with some beaches (to avoid access by private vehicle, as in the case of Cala Salada). The Consell are yet to study which parts of the coast will be selected for the same low/no traffic schemes as in place at Cala Salada. Another new initiate will be the extension of rebates and discounts (currently the service is free for retired people) to young people, citizens at risk of social exclusion and the long-term unemployed. The scope of this measure (the age of the people who can benefit and the percentage of the discount) is also being analysed, so it will not apply from January. Likewise, a study will be made to decide the future of public transport concessions coming to the end of their term in 2018. The Podemos-Guanyem grouping is in favour of creating a public company that manages this service.

Investments The budget as a whole will amount to 92.6 million, 5.8% more than this year. The investment element totals 21.8 million euros, 2.8% more than in 2016. There are noteworthy investments in social services, with the purchase of a building including its reform to accommodate the guardianship of children (1.3 million) and a second property (one million euros) whose ground floor is devoted to social service agencies, with the remainder of the building transferred to the Balearic Institute of Housing (IBAVI) for social rent.

Sa Coma Island Park

Another of the highlights, of 2.7 million euros, is for the implementation of the so-called Insular Park of Sa Coma. Specifically, the academic campus area (official language school, hospitality school and technology centre) and emergency area will be started, with the building of the military emergency unit and the new fire station. There is also provision for a motocross circuit.

Ecotax

Of the revenues from the Ecotax, only 1.1 million euros are initially foreseen, a figure "moderate" in relation to the amount that in principle is corresponds to the island. The president has explained that, pending the study and incorporation of new projects, only the income corresponding to those projects already included in the budget (hotel, school and bicycle lanes) are likely to be financed through the tourist tax.

News can participate. Each person can apply to speak only once however they are allowed to respond and follow up responses each of 3 minutes maximum. Requests to speak must be made correctly (basically wait your turn and no shouting out), with questions made to the president or a minister on a matter relating to his ministry or management responsibility. Questions may not be offensive nor disrespectful, or relate to matters that are not specific to public management. During the first session members of the public raised question regarding the Cas Serres residential home for the elderly, the controversial roadworks around Jesus, and initiatives to help ease the problem of homelessness.

Politics in the Park; Government Ministers taking questions from the public.

Ibiza Question Time; Public Politics in the Park In a must-be-applauded move to take Ibiza’s politics onto the streets, the Consell have announced a series of ‘Question Time’ style public meeting to discuss Government affairs. Consell representatives Marta Sans and Viviana Diaz presented the “new initiative of citizen participation”. After the first meeting in Ibiza Town’s Peace Park, the public forum will move around other municipalities ion following months. “We have taken some time talking about a new way of doing politics closer to the people, open, transparent and participatory. However, these ideas should not be in words, but must be put into practice” , said Sans. Marta Diaz detailed the mechanics of the debate, which

aims to “leave the institution (offices) and answer for the actions of our government on the street.” She continued “we live in times of a strong sense of distance and indifference of citizens towards public institutions. It is our responsibility to bring back people to democratic institutions.” The initiative, known as ‘El Consell a la plaça’ (The Council Square) held its first meeting on Saturday 26th November at Peace Park, Parque de la Paz, in Ibiza Town. Consell President Vicente Torres gave a welcome speech before handing over to the Vice President for the debate to begin. There are rules to govern how members of the public

San José Get Tough on Fly Tippers As part of a new campaign Sant Josep have issued the first 6 proceedings against fly tipping in the municipality.

The City of San Jose has filed six complaints for breach of the regulations regarding the depositing of waste, mainly for infringements where it has been dumped outside of the provided bins, as part of a new campaign set up by the Department of the Environment. In four cases disciplinary proceedings are for mandatory offences which may result in fines of between 200 and 1000 euros. The last two complaints, against a car rental company and an-

other food processing sector business, are being processed and will result in disciplinary proceedings. The most common violation is the disposal of waste outside and around the bins provided. The council have rem i n d e d business users that they have the island waste network at

their disposal and that they cannot deposit any waste outside of the public containers.

Editorial Comment: Spain has suffered a huge crisis in confidence around their public administration with many cases of corruption still in progress today. We have previously applauded the Ibiza Consell for taking steps such as the televising of their governmental sessions. They cannot turn the clock back, but they do seem genuinely committed to making things better for the future. Even if we think some of the decisions taken are a little odd, at least they are being open in showing how the decisions are being taken. Well done them.

Cala De Bou Review & Plans

San Jose Town Hall and Cala de Bou employers have held their second round table meeting to review the season gone and plan for the future.

Mayor Jose Mari Ribas presided over the meeting which was attended by Councillor for Tourism Helena Benlloch, and Environment and Beaches Minister Neus Mari. Councillor Benlloch presented occupancy figures provided by the Association of Hoteliers, of 86.07%, representing a significant increase from the 70.97% reported for the same period in 2015. It is agreed that the increase is due to the extension of the season, which is acknowledged as

a positive step forward. Councillor Benlloch also reported on the seasonal tourist information office now located in Cala de Bou, which had received 3074 visitors during the year. Mayor Ribas gave further news on the moves to deal with the unfinished hotel projects that have blighted the bay since they were abandoned (see report in issue 851, Nov16). The meeting also heard details of a project to improve the coastline in

the bay, which is said to be very well received by those present. No further details were given. Businesses in attendance called for an improvement to the beaches in the bay and demanded greater controls against anti-social behaviour, particularly citing people who take dogs onto the beaches against regulations. There was also discussion around the ongoing issue of unregulated holiday rentals.

News Reaccionem

Nick Gibbs

National

The Reaccionem initiative is a project by The Government of the Balearic Islands that encourages all citizens, public and private entities to join a ‘Social Pact Against Violence’. It wants as many people as possible to sign a pledge to the Pact. Signing up is simple. After selecting to do so as an individual or organisation you are presented with a brief point by point manifesto (translated example below). Providing you are in agreement with the contents and are prepared to give a commitment to put those principles into practice, you simply register your details and that is that. Though we are unsure how long the initiative has been running, to date there are a rather underwhelming 2308 individuals and 156 companies and organisations pledged. For more information … https:// www.reaccionem.com/

In figures released by Statista and based upon information from the General Council of the Judiciary, there were 129,193 complaints of gender violence throughout Spain in 2015. This equates to a ratio of 52 women in every 10,000 as an average across the country. In a record that we will not be proud of, the Balearic islands had the highest reporting rate at 82.5 in every 10,000, followed by the Canaries (71) and Mercia (66).

Ibiza Reports

Despite the Balearics topping the list of gender violence the Ibiza Office for Women have reported a decrease on the number of people attended for domestic violence in 2016. Up to November 15th, a total of 415 people sought help from the unit. This represents a 19.4% decrease over the same period in 2015 when 515 were attended. Of the 415 women, 379 were assisted following reports of gender violence. Of these 228 (60.15%) were for physi-

The data was presented at a press conference by Lydia Jurado, Minister of Social Welfare, Health, and Equality, and Olga Guerra, director of the Office for Women. Guerra attributed this decline in the number of women

coming to our offices to report problems because they cannot get away from work" however she feels that the Office of Women "continues to be a reflection of what happens in Ibiza’s society." During the press conference, the Minister Lydia Jurado talked of several initiatives being promoted by her department to combat violence against

women. "The objective is to promote preventive measures against gender violence, promoting social awareness and involvement, and anticipate cases of such violence, insisting on primary prevention," said Jurado. The Minister also welcomed the Reaccionem initiative of the Government of the Balearic social pact against male/ macho violence (see column right)

Editorial Comment

Whenever considering figures relating to any crime of violence, particularly where a large proportion is likely to be domestic violence it is important to consider that the figures can only relate the level of reporting and not necessarily the underlying level of crimes committed. For example, an increasing trend in the number

of crimes reported could, but does not necessarily, indicate that the victims of those crimes are finding it easier to come forward and report them through initiatives to tackle the problem, whereas historically they may have felt unable to do anything other than suffer in silence. A similar situation of a sharp increase in reports occurred in the UK following the opening of the ChildLine service. I am not suggesting one way or the other whether this factor is affecting figures in Ibiza or the Balearics, just that it needs to be considered. I am sure that there are other factors that could affect local and regional figures, but Women’s office director Olga Guerra’s view that a decrease in referrals is due to an extended tourist season and so women finding it hard to attend their office

seems pretty weak at best. That extended season applies to a small percentage of Ibiza’s workforce. Is she really saying that the 20% drop in referrals, 100 women, fall into the category of ‘I would report gender violence if I was working May to mid October, but wouldn’t report it if working April to the end of October’? Does that category even exist? Though complacency would be a dangerous thing, it would be better to hope that the drop in reports is a drop in the crime itself. If this was the case the Consell’s Women’s Office would deserve some of the credit for their initiatives, as would the Education Authority for their work in schools. Maybe then the Balearics can rid ourselves of this most unwanted chart topping position.

1. We express a strong rejection and condemnation of the machista violence and the foundations of inequality that supports it. 2. We recognize the different ways of exercising sexist violence and the diversity of the people who suffer it. 3. We are committed to actively involve ourselves in the search for and construction of a (workplace/ world) free from sexist violence. 4. We will make it visible that male violence does not belong to the private sphere, but is a problem of the whole society, both men and women. 5. We recognize that inequalities are rooted in the idea of the superiority of men over women and in the imposition of a single model of being and behaving according to the gender to which we belong. 6. We will support women who have suffered or suffer from sexist violence, and will respect their decisions and the complex processes in which they are immersed. 7. We will require institutions to ensure the necessary protection and support for affected women and their children, as well as the people who depend on them, by providing adequate resources and effective coordination. 8. We will work to ensure that future generations are built on the basis of respect and equal and nondiscriminatory treatment based on sex, sexual orientation or gender identity. 9. We will reject machista aggression and denounce situations of inequality and violence of which we are aware. 10. In short, we are committed to building a citizenship respectful of diversity, free from any kind of macho violence, open and inclusive from a proactive attitude.

Pirates of the Mediterranean Ibiza Dance Music Cruise Ship New for 2017 The ‘Ghost Ship’ Festival will leave Barcelona on June 17th and arrive in Ibiza on the 20th Nick Gibbs

Seven days of parties, 5,000 passengers, 80 electronic music artists and all taking place on a world-class luxury liner covering the route between Barcelona, Palma and Ibiza in June. Sound like fun? The Ghost Ship Festival has been a big hit in the U.S. and Caribbean, and now with the backing of a large Spanish investor group the party boat on a big scale is coming to Ibiza in 2017. According to their press release the first event

named ‘The Lost’, will leave Barcelona on June 17 and arrive in Eivissa on the 20th after passing through Mallorca. The second cruise named ‘The Damned ‘, will not come to the island. The festival was presented with the premiere of a video teaser on social networks in several European countries, triggering several thousand preregistration hits on the official website. Worldwide online ticket sales are now open. Organisers claim The Ghost Ship Festival will feature some of the world’s best DJs divided into two categories: Electronic Dance Music or EDM, for those lovers of commercial sounds, and Techno, for

those of an underground persuasion. The Ghost Ship Festivals are themed around pirates and privateers, with “decoration and audiovisuals to make customers feel they are part of a unique adventure”. www.ghostshipfestival.com

The Market

Intrigued by organiser’s claims that Dance music cruise ships were big business in the U.S. , we took a quick look on Google, and it didn’t take long to see the attraction for investors. Google’s first return ‘The Holy Ship’ (pictured below) is based on the 4,100 berth Norwegian Epic. They are currently listing two 4 night cruises in Janu-

ary, with prices averaging around $1,200 per person. That equates to

$4,920,000, just under five million dollars—and that is before they have sold you a

single drink. Both events are totally sold out. with waiting lists.

Tourism Nick Gibbs

October had the two highest levels of year on year increase. In March 34.5% and in October 31.3%, both positive indicators for those behind the push to extend the season. Unsurprisingly August was the busiest month with 620,000 visitors.

There was much excitement at the start of October regarding reports of a record 7.1million tourists in 2016. Thankfully the reports were a simple case of error in translation—with the island already struggling to cope with its approaching 3 million even the most money mad mogul in our midst would not wish more than double the current numbers on us. It is generally accepted that the official FRONTUR figures to the end of October are those that give the first true picture of Ibiza’s tourism year.

Well no of course there are not 7.1 million goats living on Es Vedra, but the figure is as likely as there being 7.1 million tourists visiting Ibiza in 2016, yet that amount is quoted by several large ‘Ibiza-centric’ websites, all of whom should have the resources to know better. The figure of 7.1 million tourists on the island this year seems to have derived from a report in the Diario de Ibiza which was an account of statistics released by AENA, the airport authority. Aena’s figures relate to the throughput of passengers at Ibiza airport, and so at the absolute maximum would be around half that number of tourists – arrivals and departures. Though errors in translation do occur, we have to acknowledge that ourselves, that so many websites made the same mistake does beg the question, who is copying who?

News Flu Vaccinations

Since the start of the campaign on October 26th there have been more than 10,700 Pitiusans vaccinated against seasonal flu, 10,057 in Ibiza and 679 in Formentera. Concerning people over 65, just one of the risk groups that the vaccine is recommended for, figures have reached an average of 39.95% coverage in Ibiza with 6,616 vaccinated and 42.83% in Formentera. The campaign will run until the 14th December and is particularly important for not only those in the risk groups (see ibsalut website for information) but also caregivers, teachers etc. The Ministry of Health are also asking people to attend their health centres at the onset of symptoms to avoid using A&E unnecessarily. www.ibsalut.es

Fundraising Father’s Fraud Arrest

Police have arrested Fernando Blanco, father of Nadia, the 11 year old girl affected by a rare disease and focus of a fundraising campaign in recent months, following suspicions of fraud after he persuaded well-wishers to hand over tens of thousands of pounds.

The court dealing with alleged scam donations has agreed to revoke the child’s passport and asked the prosecution if social services need to intervene in her care. Medical reports have been demanded and the magistrate has frozen the bank accounts of the parents while the investigation takes place. Marga Garau, mother Nadia, said in a television interview that neither she nor her husband, Fernando Blanco,

have swindled money from donations. It is reported that she tried to return all the money raised for her child some 300,000€ but was unable to do so. Since 2009, Fernando Blanco has regularly appeared in various forms of media explaining the rare genetic disease, trichothiodystrophy that afflicts his daughter. An article published in El Mundo in November prompted readers to donate 153,000€

50 Roca Llisa residents face eviction following bank sale.

Residents Claim New Owner Has Made Threats To Evict Them By Force

14 families who occupied a vacant building in Roca Llisa several years ago now face eviction following the La Caixa bank sale of the building to a Dutch buyer. The families say that although they have never paid rent, they have many attempts to offer La Caixa rental during their occupation of what was in effect an abandoned property, they say they do not feel like squatters and have made improvements to the building, which has become their home. Some of those affected staged a protest outside the Jesus branch of La Caixa on Wednesday. They said that they are among the workers that had been in Ibiza for a decade or more, however simply cannot find or afford a property on the

open market, which led them to take the action of self-help and use a building that was fit for occupation but empty. The residents claim that a representative of the bank promised they ‘would never be evicted’ without finding an alternative solution. The families are complaining of thuggish behaviour from the new owner. “He is a Dutch man, very big and threatening,” said one of those affected “these foreign thugs who dress like bikers have repeatedly threatened us and told us they are going to take the building by force”. Some of those affected, directly blame La Caixa for the uncertainty of their situation. “The situation is impossible, workers will have nowhere to go and when they all leave, who will cater for the tourists?” a woman said. The residents say they have the support of Vice President and Minister for Housing Viviana Sans who visited them last Sunday to enquire about their situation after they received the threats.

Followed by France (47%) and Germany (44%), which along with the Netherlands (36%) hold elections in 2017. These forthcoming elections are being viewed as a barometer of the populist far - right in Europe. Three Injured In Dog Attacks

Three people have been injured in one afternoon in Ibiza as a result of dog bites. As reported by a spokesman for the IbSalut, a girl aged 6 and a girl aged 19, both of Spanish nationality, came to A&E early in the afternoon with dog bites, apparently from a Pitbull. The young girl was bitten on the face, leg and back and has been admitted to Can Misses Hospital. She is in a stable and good condition, according to health spokesman. Meanwhile, the 19 year old had a bite on her right leg and has been discharged. In a separate incident, a 20yr old man of German nationality has suffered an amputation of a finger after being bitten by a dog. The young man tried to separate two dogs in a fight when was bitten.

Food & Drink The Pie Predicament.

Proper (adjective)

BRITISH, 1) denoting something that is truly what it is said or regarded to be genuine. “she’s never had a proper job” 2) of the required or correct type or form; “an artist needs the proper tools” (adverb) BRITISH informal dialect, 1) satisfactorily or correctly. “my eyes were all blurry and I couldn’t see proper”

Nick Gibbs roper’ is an unusual word if you think about it. When used in its original adjective form, especially in the middle English of Downton Manor’s upstairs family, it denotes the very pinnacle of English language clipped correctness. But take ‘proper’ to an inner city estate and in adverb form it would have Carson the Butler cursing of its usage being anything but ‘proper’. Strange that a word meaning correctness can be used in totally different contexts at opposite ends of the social economic demographic, neither of which would agree that the other’s use is ‘proper’ English as they consider it. Though much of life is historically dictated by what we used to call the class system, there are a few things that have always traversed such barriers in all British and Irish homes. Everybody from m’lady to tea-lady loves to talk about the weather and we are world leaders in the art of queuing. In our food and drink, ever since the keys came off the caddy tea has been a beverage for all, and ever since somebody had the bright idea of throwing everything into a vat of hot fat, Fish and Chips has been a meal loved by all. I mean who doesn’t like fish and chips? It doesn’t matter where it is served, from newspaper clad take away on a bracing Skegness Prom, to Poisson et Frites in the salubrious surroundings of the savoy grill, surely there are not many native English speakers upstairs or down who could resist a liberal sprinkling of salt and Sarsons before tucking in? But this does come with one very important caveat. Fish and chips, above all other meals, has to be PROPER. In that respect I am delighted to announce to the entire cross section of Ibiza’s expat community that Flaherty’s in San Antonio do proper (adverb)

‘P

Flaherty’s Fish Fridays,

PROPER Fish & Chips in Ibiza ... proper (adjective) fish and chips.

The fish and chip supper is available whenever the kitchen is open, but the thinking man will want to go Fridays when the catch of the day is double the fish for the regular price. So let me run you through the proper-ness, starting at the top.

T

he Fish is proper, proper Cod. None of your ´tastes-nearlyas-good-for-half-theprice´ pingu the penguin alternatives. The batter is proper. Whatever they may claim, neither Aunt Bessie nor Cap´n Birdsye have ever come close to achieving as good as freshly battered – it is not possible. And the crisp and tasty Flaherty´s fish is as good evidence as you´ll ever get of that absolute truth. The chips are proper. Ditto Aunt Bessie and Cap´n Birdseye again, and the thin cut fries of generic takeaways are worse still, but also let us bring in the gastro pub fraternity in their failed efforts to recreate that proper chip shop taste. We don´t want triple cooked fries presented in a latticework tower on a bed of wilted regret, we want proper

chips. It is that simple and I won´t need to elaborate beyond the descriptor ‘proper’ to any British or Irish reader. Flaherty´s tick our chip shop boxes by the golden brown flavoursome proper plateload. Proper peas. Of course. Proper bread. It could have come off a Mother´s pride van this morning. Proper Butter. Praise the sweet baby Jesus, when did you last get a proper pat of butter instead of a plastic entombed portion that would finally gain sufficient temperature to become spreadable just as you are finishing your meal? For this one thing alone, this proper butter, I now love Flaherty´s.

Proper salad – by which of course I mean there was none. I love salad as

much as the next man, but it has no place sharing a plate with Fish and Chips. The two things are as ideologically challenged as Hitler and Stalin, and we know how their buddying up together turned out. OK there was a lemon wedge – debatable in its plate-worthiness in my book, but in keeping the Lord Granthams of the world happy, we´ll allow

it. Those of a lemon squeezing persuasion will also be delighted with the little pot of tartare sauce. And yes of course it was proper Tartare sauce. To ensure the citrus slither didn´t give anybody the wrong idea of unfitting pretensions of grandeur, we were also served a mini-jug of proper curry sauce and proper gravy. The perfect return to backstreet corner chip shop culture – and for some of us heathens it doesn´t get more proper

(adverb) proper (adjective) than that.

We all have our preferences and for me you can keep your pint or pop, I have always liked fish and chips with a cuppa. How was mine served at Flaherty´s? How else but strong and in a mug? Or to put it another way, the proper way.

home. Well the thing of it is, we can´t. Proper fish and chips is a rare treat indeed. Though the menu at Flaherty´s will not sate my desire for Rock Eel (it’s a South East thing), nor can I have a Savaloy or pickled egg whilst waiting for my fish n chips to be served, (those treats will seem all the sweeter when I return to the UK), what they do give me is a reliably regular supply of one of the few remaining great hankerings from home. Brilliant. Or to put it properly, proper brilliant.

In wanting to sample as wide a range of chip shop favourites as possible, we thought it our duty to order one of Flaherty’s Pies along with our Fish supper. Having raved about the fish you would reasonably expect the pie to be in for second billing, but it really is not that simple. The Pie cannot feature as part of the ‘proper’ text above as in chip shop terms, i.e. a Pukka Pie in a foil tray, it isn’t ‘proper’. What it is however, is truly delicious. The puff pastry top of our Chicken and Mushroom pie covers a filling of the finest full flavour. Packed with chunks of meat and veg, but it was the sauce that sang a song of ‘eat me’, a song that makes what should be an easy Friday choice of Fish far more difficult than it has any right to be. On balance, given the double portion, yes I’d probably go for fish. Any other day and I may well be a super pie guy. Both would be greedy right?

Information Flaherty’s is open Friday Saturday and Sunday in December until the 18th when they close for a short break. Our Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas and Tartare Sauce costs 8,90€ on the menu, and on Fridays it is double the fish for the same price. Fish and Chips can be ordered for take-away, however whether it is wrapped the proper way in newspaper we don’t know ☺ See the Flaherty’s advert on the front page for more information, and facebook for upcoming events. https:// www.facebook.com/ flahertysibiza/

ow anybody reading this in the UK may wonder what all this fuss is about. Though under the cosh from a thousand combikebab-pizza-chicken shops per square mile, chances are they can find proper fish and chips within a still-hot-whenyou-get-back distance of

Return of the 100% Mortgage ...

Leading Spanish property sales portal Pisos.com have reported a questionable return of the 100% mortgage ,despite many seeing it as one of the causes of the crisis that has caused havoc to the Spanish property sector, not to mention ruination to the lives of thousands of people.

100% Mortgages, i.e. lending the full amount a property is worth, were very popular during the years before the housing bubble burst in the financial crisis. Though many will question the wisdom in their return, it is inevitable that there will always be a market for people wanting to borrow money to buy property that do not have a deposit to put down. Whether in favour or not, Pisos.com have given 10 common questions surrounding the product.

What they are exactly?

Mixed Messages With The Return of the 100% Mortgage Alongside Warnings of a New Bubble There May Be Bubble Ahead ...

Another housing bubble will inflate between 2018 and 2020, warns Ignacio de la Torre, economist and head of the investment firm Arcano, speaking at a recent industry conference. An association of Spanish estate agents has been echoing similar concerns, albeit for different reasons. Back in the boom years Spaniards went on a reckless investment spree fueled by easy credit and the mistaken assumption that real estate was a one-way bet. “Property never lets you down” was the popular slogan at the time (el ladrillo nunca te falla), used by sales-types and investors alike. We

all know how well that turned out. Back then the investment logic was prices will always rise, in a classic bubble dynamic. The more people invested, the more prices rose, so the more people invested, and so on, until the bubble burst. This time round it’s different, at least for now. Spaniards have sound arguments for investing in their property market today. What other options does the average Spaniard have, given that knowledge of financial investments is lower in Spain than other Western countries? In the bank for a pitiful interest rate, and the nagging doubt that banks can’t be trusted? In stock markets that many Spaniards don’t understand and vaguely distrust? Or in property – an asset that everyone is familiar with that now looks cheap after capital values were hammered by the crisis? It’s easy to understand why more and more Spaniards opting to invest in local real estate, many of them using mortgage financing that has never been so cheap. The problem is, the attractiveness of property as an investment could inflate another bubble in the next two years, argues De La Torre. “Speculative money will go to the residential sector in search of yield, and prices will rise further than expected, and than salaries,” he said. “And it will all happen sooner than we think,” he warned, calling on the ECB to stop banks lending more than 60% LTVs. However, if he is right, I think there is only a bubble risk in some hotspots in the big cities and on the coast, and not all over Spain, as happened last time around. In many parts of Spain the property market is still depressed.

Estate Agents Raise The Alarm The Association of Spanish Property Agents (API) has also warned of another bubble in the making, and called on the Government to take measures to head it off. The Association has called for “urgent measures to increase market transparency and consumer protection,” to make the market “safer and more stable” and avoid a repeat of the disastrous consequences of the last boom and bust. Diego Galiano, President of the association, claims that the bad practises so common in the last boom are starting to appear again, making Government intervention necessary, including tightening up mortgage lending. The API association has a vested interest in exploiting fears of another bubble to call for more regulations if it means more members and fees for the association, and less competition. But I have to agree that regulation is necessary. Almost anyone can set up as a broker in Spain, so professional standards can be dismal, especially when it comes to selling property to foreign buyers. In the last boom some of the biggest companies in the business were nothing more than unscrupulous hard-sell operations, and I hear that some of

The most common lending ratio in Spain today is that banks finance up to 80% of the appraised value of a home. However, 100% mortgages have recently reappeared, which, as explained by Maica López, head of content at Bankimia.com, "finance the entire value of the appraisal or the total value of the sale of the property." According to Estefanía González, personal finance spokeswoman of Kelisto.es, the choice between "buying and selling" or "appraisal" as a reference indicator depends on "what each entity decides", although as a general rule, this specialist ensures that banks " Usually opt for the lowest figure between the two."

Do they include costs attached to the purchase? 100% mortgages do not include the additional costs of any purchase, as the registry, notary, of agency or taxes. This is because the bank is financing 100% of the property value, so the customer has to pay this money, which according to calculations is usually 10% of the property. However, as stated on Kelisto.es, there are exceptions and it is possible to find special offers. This is the case currently maintained by Banco Popular with its Mortgage Aliseda, intended for the purchase of real estate from its portfolio. In this example, says Gonzalez, "the entity grants the customer 100% of the purchase price plus the money needed to meet these expenses."

What banks offer them? To date, virtually no bank offers mortgages for 100% of the valuation or purchase value of a free home. Or at least, as Gonzalez points out, "they do not advertise them as such." In contrast, 100% mortgages are common when financial institutions have homes in stock. In these cases, says López, this is a strategy that seeks to "promote their sales", for which they offer mortgages "with more attractive conditions." Among the financial entities that trade with 100% mortgages for this use are Bantierra, Liberbank, Banco Popular, Banco Pastor and Deutsche Bank.

What conditions are applied? The conditions that the banks demand from the applicants of this type of mortgages are not far from the remaining ones. Among them, according to Bankimia.com, "have a justified minimum income and a good credit history." Similarly, from XTB, they add that financial institutions require borrowing capacity "not to exceed 35% of the total income of the borrower". "If the borrowing capacity exceeds 35%, the mortgage transaction could be reinforced with some type of guarantee, economic or home guarantee, depending on the criteria of the bank," says Arco.

What links and commissions entail? Some 100% mortgages exempt the client from the payment of commissions. This is the case, says González, of the mortgage Mihabitans of Liberbank. By contrast, most credit institutions that grant these mortgages apply the same conditions as loans with lower percentages. In this context, he puts as an example the Mortgage Altamira, of Banco Santander, "which charges an opening commission of 0.5%". With regard to the bonds they require of customers, these are usually identical for all mortgages. Obligations, according to Arco, that are marked by law and extend from the domiciliation of payrolls and bank receipts, to life insurance and credit cards. These links, according to this analyst, "lower the cost of the mortgage".

What type of housing? 100% mortgages are, as a general rule, offers designed for the purchase of housing from banks. However, as underlined by Kelisto.es, there may be exceptions to this type of loan. The first one refers to the amount liable to be borrowed. In

The latest Spanish property prices have been released by property portal Pisos.com. The disparity from lowest to highest continues with the lowest at 908€ m2 in the interior region of Castilla-La Mancha, to the highest of 2,654€ in Cantabria. Next comes the Balearic Islands at 2,192€ and in third comes Madrid at 2,040€. We wanted to find out how relevant the Balearic price was to the Ibiza property market...

Reflecting official statistics we found this frankly unremarkable terraced house for sale on Pisos.com for 580,000€ The 3 bed property is 205m2 and situated in Can Misses.

Unique

Ibiza’s property market is unique and not affected by its neighbouring islands, although it would be its big sister Majorca which would account for the vast majority of data used in compilation of the property statistics. We found that although the government do not maintain any official statistics for Ibiza separate from the Balearics, it does maintain a property price index for all municipalities with a population of over 25,000. In Ibiza’s case, this applies to Ibiza Town and Santa Eulalia only. Looking at the numbers it will come as no surprise that both Ibiza municipalities have prices considerably higher than the Balearic average. Ibiza Town stands at 2,690€ and Santa Eulalia at 2,465€. The official government price for the Balearic’s is 2,041€, close to the Pisos.com survey given it was taken slightly earlier in the year. These figures for Ibiza and Santa Eulalia would indicate

The Price of Property: Balearics 3rd Most Expensive, But Taken Alone Ibiza Equals Cantabria, Spain’s Most Expensive Region that the Ibiza property price index is on a par with that of Cantabria. Though it is hardly needed, it gives a further reinforcement of the property market pricing out local residents. A major difference to Ibiza compared to Cantabria, Madrid and other expensive areas is that people in Ibiza cannot choose to move further away to take advantage of cheaper property prices and commute to work. Sometimes these raw numbers mean little in

this sense, González says that although "most mortgages for bank properties offer 100%" there are some that do not, such as Mortgage Solvia, Banco Sabadell, "which offers a maximum of 80%." This cap, he stresses, is typical of mortgages intended for free housing, although in the case of a customer with a more solvent profile "this can negotiate and get a personalized offer that does reach 100%" of the total Value of the property or its appraisal figure.

Who can obtain a 100% mortgage? 100% mortgages are open to all types of clients, from those who already have financial institutions to those who enter for the first time in one of its offices. However, there is a profile that monopolizes the largest number of such loans. These stakeholders are, he argues, "those who do not have enough capital to acquire the property plus the costs of the sale," but who need financing and maintain a solid image regarding income, with credentials to present alternatives to payments and access to guarantors. "All this is according to the criteria of the risk department of each bank," he adds.

What is the repayment term? According to the experts consulted, it covers between 10 and 40 years. This margin is verified when analysing the maximum period of offers from entities such as Liberbank, Banco Popular, Banco Santander and Bantierra, which are already outstanding for extending the maximum amortization period of their 100% mortgages to 40 years. This last extension, González says, is a clear differentiation from the

isolation, and so to give some real context, we have applied the rates to a 200m2 property. The price difference is startling.

200m2 Property

Ibiza Town: 540,000€ Santa Eulalia: 490,000€ Balearic Average: 410,000€ Castilla-LaMancha 180,000€ To show an example we found a property representative of these figures— see right. Though the cost of buying a home in Ibiza may preclude many people, including na-

tive Ibicencos, from getting onto the property ladder, it may not be only the trickle down effect of value to rental that is causing our current problems in available long term rental stock.

Rental Effect

Though the high value of property will undoubtedly have an effect on the rental market, the long term trends in the Ibiza Town values indicate that it cannot be the high price alone. 2,690€ is high by any standard, but the value was higher

still between 2005 and the end of 2008. In this boom time immediately prior to the crisis that hit Spain’s property market very hard, Ibiza Town actually peaked at a much higher than current 3,489€m2, yet none of us remember the problems the Island is experiencing now in its lack of

affordable rental stock. The big difference now to then is the rapid growth of the owner self-let websites such as Airbnb. Whatever the reasons behind the problems, there will be many people hoping the next property bubble predicted by Ignacio de la Torre (see article ‘Bubble Ahead) does not materialise. Given the island’s inability to bring in daily workers to run the businesses on which our tourism relies, there must surely be a limit at which the island economy would implode. After all, there is no point attracting VIPs if there is nobody left to pamper to their VIP needs.

rest of mortgages, since it deals with "exceptions", they do not usually present "so high" amortization periods for mortgages "intended to pay for free housing".

Do they offer fixed or variable interest rate? Most of the 100% mortgages that are signed in Spain do so at a variable interest rate. This trend is in line with the general trend and responds to the current situation of the Euribor, the interest rates that are referenced most mortgages in our country. In these cases, says Lopez, it is loans ranging "between Euribor +0.80% and Euribor +3.2%." All this, is based on the linkages assumed by the holder. For its part, Kelisto.es confirm that most of these mortgages are signed to a variable interest rate. However, Gonzalez also notes that "there are some fixed rate" such as the Fixed Mortgage Solvia offered by Banco Sabadell, "with a fixed interest rate of 2.80% for 30 years".

Are the fees are higher? Since it is a mortgage that finances 100% of the value of the home, customers who purchase them receive a higher amount than if they opted for a mortgage that only granted 80% of the value of the sale or the valuation. However, Gonzalez stressed that the amount of dues to pay "depends on the repayment period" to sign customers. That is why, he says, that 100% mortgages offer "more flexibility, as they hardly require to have savings,” but at the same time requires contractors to be cautious. In this sense, it advised to consider what is important.

amon Llull is credited with writing the first major work of Catalan literature. Recently surfaced manuscripts show his work to have predated prominent work on electoral theory by several centuries. e is also considered a pioneer of computation theory, especially given his influence on Leibniz. ithin the Franciscan Order he is honoured as a martyr. He was beatified in 1857 by Pope Pius IX. His feast day was assigned to 30 June and is celebrated by the Third Order of St. Francis.

H W

Early life and family Llull was born into a wealthy family in Palma, the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Majorca. James I of Aragon founded Majorca to integrate the recently conquered territories of the Balearic Islands into the Crown of Aragon. Llull's parents had come from Catalonia as part of the effort to colonize the formerly Almohad ruled island. As the island had been conquered militarily, all the Muslim population who had not been able to flee the conquering Christians had been enslaved, even though they still constituted a significant portion of the island's population. In 1257 he married Blanca Picany, with whom he had two children, Domènec and Magdalena. Although he formed a family, he lived what he would later call the licentious and wasteful life of a troubadour—that being pretty risqué for the 1250s. Llull served as tutor to James II of Aragon and later became Seneschal (the administrative head of the royal household) to the future King James II of Majorca, a relative of his wife.

Conversion Llull is credited with writing the first major work of Catalan literature.

Ramon Llull; c. 1232 – c. 1315 Philosopher, Logician, Franciscan Tertiary, Writer & Balearian. Nick Gibbs (introduction)

I

t is fair to say that Ramon Llull does not have the cool cachet associated with some of the Balearics’ very earliest superstars. The Goddess Tanit is all about fertility, and the little fella Bes after which our own island derives his name has no end of shenanigan attributes to endear him to the modern Ibizan. Then a century or two after Llull’s life came along the sex-on-a-ship pirates including some luminary characters as Barbrossa the Redbeard and Miguel “the Pope” Novelli. n an island that rejoices in its hedonistic credentials it is little wonder that Ramon Llull’s

O

face is not staring at you from endless rails of souvenir shop t-shirts, nor his 30th June feast day considered as one more excuse for a party. espite his relative anonymity outside of education and cultural circles, make no mistake, as far as late Medieval Balearians go, they don’t get much bigger than Llull. And do not be fooled by his face level academia. He may not seem wild by our modern standards, but he started out living the self confessed ‘licentious and wasteful life of a troubadour’, and in the 1250s we’re talking Tony Pike territory. (All the years I’ve been trying to convince people we writers are sexy …. )

D

In 1263 Llull experienced a religious epiphany in the form of a series of visions. He narrates the event in his autobiography Vita coaetanea ("Daily Life"): Ramon, while still a young man and Seneschal to the King of Majorca, was very given to ‘composing worthless songs and poems and to doing other licentious things’. One night he was sitting beside his bed, about to compose and write in his vulgar tongue a song to a lady whom he loved with a foolish love and as he began to write this song, he looked to his right and saw what he described as ‘our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross, as if suspended in mid-air’. The vision came to him six times in all, leading him to leave his family, position, and belongings in order to pursue a life in the service of God. Specifically, he realized three intentions: to die in the service of God while converting Muslims to Christianity, to see to the founding of religious institutions that would teach foreign languages, and to write a book on how to overcome someone's objections to being converted.

Nine years of solitude

Following his epiphany Llull became a Franciscan tertiary (a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis— basically someone who lives like a monk but go through all the rigmarole of becoming one), taking inspiration from Saint Francis of Assisi. After a short pilgrimage he returned to Majorca, where

Ramon Llull he purchased a Muslim slave from whom he wanted to learn Arabic. For the next nine years, until 1274, he engaged in study and contemplation in relative solitude. He read extensively in both Latin and Arabic, learning both Christian and Muslim theological and philosophical thought. Between 1271 and 1274 he wrote his first works, a compendium of the Muslim thinker Al-Ghazali's logic and the Llibre de Contemplació en Déu (Book on the Contemplation of God), a lengthy guide to finding truth through contemplation. In 1274, while staying at a hermitage on Puig de Randa, the form of the great book he was to write was finally given to him through divine revelation: a complex system that he named his ‘Art’, which would become the motivation behind most of his life's efforts.

Llull's ‘Art’

His first elucidation of the Art was in Art Abreujada d'Atrobar Veritat (The Abbreviated Art of Finding Truth), in 1290. After spending some time teaching in France and being disappointed by the poor reception of his Art among students, he decided to revise it. It is this revised version that he became known for. It is most clearly presented in his Ars generalis ultima or Ars magna ("The Ultimate General Art", published in 1305). The Art operated by combining religious and philosophical attributes selected from a number of lists. It is believed that Llull's inspiration for the Ars magna came from observing Arab astrologers use a device called a zairja. The Art was intended as a debating tool for winning Muslims to the Christian faith through logic and reason. Through his detailed analytical efforts, Llull built an indepth theosophic reference by which a reader could enter any argument or question. The reader then used visual aids and a book of charts to combine various ideas, generating statements which came together to form an answer.

Llull & Logic

One of the most significant changes between the original and the second version of the Art was in the visuals used. The early version used 16 figures presented as complex, complementary trees, while the system of the Ars Magna featured only four, including one which combined the other three. This figure, a "Lullian Circle," took the form of a paper machine operated by rotating concentrically arranged circles to combine his symbolic alphabet, which was repeated on each level. These combinations were said to show all possible truth about the

Ramon Llull’s Tree of the Philosophy of Love at the Biblioteca Diocesana in Palma de Mallorca

subject of inquiry. Llull based this notion on the idea that there were a limited number of basic, undeniable truths in all fields of knowledge, and that everything about these fields of knowledge could be understood by studying combinations of these elemental truths. The method was an early attempt to use logical means to produce knowledge. Llull hoped to show that Christian doctrines could be obtained artificially from a fixed set of preliminary ideas. For example, the most essential table listed the attributes of God: goodness, greatness, eternity, power, wisdom, will, virtue, truth and glory. Llull knew that all believers in the monotheistic religions—whether Jews, Muslims or Christians—would agree with these attributes, giving him a firm platform from which to argue. The idea was developed further for more Esoteric purposes by Giordano Bruno in the 16th century, and in the 17th century by the "Great Rationalist" Gottfried Leibniz, who wrote his dissertation about Llull's Art and integrated it into his metaphysics and philosophy of science. Leibniz gave Llull's idea the name "ars combinatoria", by which it is now often known. Some computer scientists have adopted Llull as a sort of founding father, claiming that his system of logic was the beginning of information science.

Llull & Education

Llull urged the study of Arabic and other theninsufficiently studied languages in Europe for the purpose of converting Muslims to Christianity. He travelled through Europe to meet with popes, kings, and princes, trying to establish special colleges to prepare future missionaries. In 1285, he embarked on his first mission to North Africa but was expelled from Tunis. Llull travelled to Tunis a second time in about 1304, and wrote numerous letters to the king of Tunis, but little else is known (continued page 26)

ject was of great importance because it paved the way for the doctrine of Duns Scotus, whom he met in 1297, after which he was given the nickname Doctor Illuminatus, even if it seems that he had not direct influence on him. In any case Llull is the first author to use the expression "Immaculate Conception" to designate the Virgin's exemption from original sin. He appears to have been the first to teach this doctrine publicly at the University of Paris.

death. The extreme life of Ramon Llull is an exhibition coordinated by the Institute of Catalan and Joan Santanach, curator of the Year Llull, which aims to bring the complex and endless figure of Llull to the public in an entertain-

No Surprises In This Year’s Most Popular New Crapper.

The Crapper

El Caganer, “The Crapper”, Explained Nativity scenes, or Belén, as it is called in Catalan, are very popular in Spain, particularly its Catalan speaking regions. It will have the usual range of animals, shepherds and wise men sharing the stage with the main protagonists, but there is one peculiar to Catalonia and the neighbouring regions. El Caganer is a figurine depicted in the act of defecation who is a mainstay of any self-respecting Catalan nativity.

The name “El Caganer” literally means “the crapper” or “the shitter”. Traditionally, the figurine is depicted as a peasant, wearing the traditional Catalan red cap (the “barretina”) and with his trousers down, showing a bare backside, and defecating. In recent times El Caganer has taken on the role of social commentator, with each year bringing a new range of public figures from the world of politics, sport and entertainment doing just what the little fellow does best. Though his use may be limited to Catalonia and its surrounding parts, (plus Naples for some reason), the inspiration for the model knows no such bounds. Brits a plenty include David Cameron the PM and representatives from all sides of the house. This year it is not surprising that Donald Trump seems to be one of the most popular choices of pants-down

pottery. The exact origin of the Caganer is unknown, but the tradition has existed since at least the 18th century. According to the society Amics del Caganer (Friends of the Caganer), it is believed to have entered the nativity scene by the late 17th or early 18th century, during the Baroque period. An Iberian votive deposit was found near Tornabous in the Urgell depicting a holy Iberian warrior defecating on his falcata. This led to a brief altercation between the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and the Departament d’Arqueologia in the Conselleria de Cultura of the Generalitat de Catalunya as to whether the find can be regarded as a proto-caganer (which would place the origin of this tradition far earlier than previously thought) or just a representation of a pre-combat ritual. However old he is, we like him.

Polvorones

Rich, crumbly Polvorones are a delicious Spanish treat, found on every Christmas table. This traditional recipe is as soft and crumbly as they come, they just about melt in your mouth! Prep Time: 20 minutes: Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour 3/4 cup almonds (raw) 5 oz. butter or margarine 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Preparation

This polvorones recipe makes approximately 16 (2-inch round) cookies. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Measure and pour flour out onto a cookie sheet. Place in oven and "toast" the flour. Occasionally move the flour around on the sheet, so that it toasts evenly. Leave in oven for about 8 minutes. Remove and set aside. Place raw almonds on another cookie sheet. Toast the almonds until they change color just slightly. Remove and place almonds into a food processor. Process almonds until they are finely ground. Reduce oven temperature to 250 degrees. Cream butter, sugar and cinnamon together in a large mixing bowl. Add the flour and finely ground almonds and continue mixing. The dough will be very crumbly! Place a sheet of waxed paper on a cutting board or other flat work surface. Press the dough together to form a ball. Then press the dough onto the waxed paper. Carefully flatten it down to about 1/2 inch. Use a cookie cutter to cut out the cookies. Use a small spatula to carefully move the cookies from the waxed paper to a cookie sheet for baking because the dough is very dry and flaky. Bake cookies on ungreased cookie sheet for 25-30 minutes at 250 degrees. Remove cookie sheet from oven and allow cookies to cool completely before removing them. Take special care not to break them.

Gluten Free & Diabetic

Alternatives for gluten free and/or sugar free Polvorones. This simple recipe can be easily converted to a healthier and gluten free alternative.

Gluten Free

Substitute the 1 1/2 cups of regular flour with one cup brown rice flour and 1/2 cup gluten-free waffle mix (or similar) flour. The lack of gluten makes the dough even more dry and crumbly so I add four tbsp of water to the mixture to make it sticky enough to be able to form it into cookies.

Diabetic/Low Calorie

Substitute the sugar with 1 tsp of powdered Stevia or your favourite sugar substitute. The almond flavour seems to do a very good job of disguising the dreaded ‘saccharin’ aftertaste.

Bon Nadal Christmas View from the Pew Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel

Sad news to hear that Leonard Cohen who gave us Suzanne and Hallelujah has passed on to the other shore. As I think about his life and his songs, the lyrics of Love Itself, stands out for me. It’s a song describing an experience during Cohen’s decade long seclusion in the Mount Baldy Zen Buddhist Monastery in California: The light came through the window, Straight from the sun above, And so inside my little room There plunged the rays of Love. In streams of light I clearly saw The dust you seldom see, Out of which the Nameless makes A Name for one like me. I'll try to say a little more Love went on and on Until it reached an open door Then Love Itself Love Itself was gone. Etc.…

In the Bible God is paradoxically both the Nameless One and Love Itself. I think of the experience that lies at the foundation of Judaism. Moses encounters the God at the burning bush in the desert. Moses attempts to elicit God’s name. God’s reply is wonderfully mysterious. In the Hebrew original God says: “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh” which translated is either “I am that I am” or “I cause to be what I cause to be” or “I will be what I will be”. In the Bible, God does have a name, which traditionally Jews do not speak it, but the meaning of the name is mysterious and evasive. During the Christmas festivities, followers of The Way, remember the Jewish rabbi Jesus who uniquely embodies the Nameless One. We will never know what an infinite person is like. But God has made himself known in a way that we can understand. God has made Himself known as Love Itself in a human person – Jesus.

Spend, Spend, Spend International online retailer Retailmenot.com have published figures relating to the relative spending habits of different nationalities. The figures were prepared by the Retail Research Centre of Nottingham and show what some may consider a surprising difference in consumerism among different nationalities. The average European household spends 643.10€ on Christmas gifts and festivities. Within the European countries surveyed, the UK spends most, 963.86€ per household and Spain comes in last at under half that with a figure quoted of 414.54€. Though many of us may be pleased that Spain has not adopted the rampant consumerism that seems to dominate Christmas in the UK, the level of difference did seem extreme – particularly taking into account that these budgets included food, drink and other social aspects of the holidays. We asked the research centre whether they had included gifts purchased for Kings Day and they confirmed that yes, this amount did include Christmas and Kings gifts. However, if we think the situation is out of control in the UK, it appears even more so in the USA with an

Love From Ibiza … Carly S

This weekend I had the absolute pleasure of being part of the team who organised and ran a fundraising event for refugees and victims of war. We only secured the venue, La Muella (formerly Aura on the San Juan road), 12 days prior to the event so it was a hectic whirlwind of calls, messages, meetings and madness to get Love From Ibiza's first public event off the ground. We were all overwhelmed by the attendance on Saturday. We never expected to sell out of food, cakes and mulled wine so fast or to have to send elves out to buy more gifts for Santa's Grotto! Over four thousand euros was raised, which will be divided between The White Helmets, and other smaller, non profit NGO's run by volunteers and directly working with refugees and victims of war. We´ll also be giving money to island Naturopath Chloe Silverman, who heads out to Greece with a team of medics next week. We salute you, Chloe, incredible work. We've been in touch with our friends at http://www.springsofhope.foundation/, www.shropshireloves.org.uk, and St Vincent De Paul and this is what they had to say: “Oh my goodness thank you Carly and your team so very much. I am amazed. Truly Love from Ibiza!!! I am amazed!!! Absolutely stunned here!!! Incredible generosity, I have no words!! Thank You...pics will follow xxxx Thank you .. truly.” Lisa Maira, Springs of Hope. “OH MY GOODNESS ..... that's amazing! What an incredible amount - can you hop on a plane and do one here?!” Lea Bevan, Shropshire Loves, on hearing the total raised. “Tomorrow another clothes and shoes distribution and hopefully in the evening we can deliver the much needed heater . These will be funded by our friends in Ibiza and the €1000 they raised from their Xmas wonderland Fair thank you Marie Duchar Clark & your amazing friends. And from the people fleeing war, they will be so grateful for your donations. Bless you all and thanks to all our donors”. Lisa-Marie Devlin of St Vincent De Paul, Northern Ireland; currently in Greece distributing supplies. Huge thanks to Jelena , Motti and the staff at La Muella, Marie Duchar Clarke, Liam O Dowd, Louisa Hadkinson Grimes, Matt McCormick, Emma Jane Robinson De-Souza of Ultima Entertainment, Claire Turley of Ibiza Princess Parties, Charlie Starr, Chris Langley, Nell Shakespeare, Alex O Brien, Matt Pickles, PQA Ibiza, Richard Bright, Sarah Main, Tom Grimes, Neil Thorogood of Party Ibiza, Zoey Evans, Joha Olarte Bates, Sharon Edwards, Katie Brant, Nick Gibbs, Julia Daniels, Kerry Ann Young, Zoe Hillier, Ceri Lyn Roberts, Monique Hemmers of Moods Ibiza and each and every one of the beautiful souls who came and supported the event so lovingly and generously, you exceeded our expectations by a long way. "Absolutely amazing day! Turnout blew us all away and the sun was shining. Thank you to everyone who helped, visited, donated. We did it! and in 12 days too! Watch out next year!! Fabulous team! Happy Christmas everyone!!! Lots and lots of Love from Ibiza — feeling amazing." Marie, Love From Ibiza founder, pregnant door greeter, organiser in chief and generally phenomenal woman. “We definitely felt the power of love at the event. Well done Marie, all the team and all who contributed...WE DID IT! This defo was LOVE from Ibiza. Can't wait to find out how much was made... Feeling all warm inside" And on finding out that figure, "Amazing. A massive thank you to all those who came to support with so much love and generosity." Lou, décor and prizes procurer, smiling greeter, professional organiser, star. “Proper shattered after an amazing day. Thank you to everyone who came, it was beyond our expectations. The thanks we got were worth it alone. Curry, wine and snooze in that order. Love to all. ... We’ve had a lot of people asking if raffle tickets are still available as they missed out on the day, so we’re postponing the draw for a little longer. If you would still like a ticket, get in touch!" Liam; poster designer, prize procurer, online promoter and table mover extraordinaire. The aforementioned raffle will be drawn on Saturday the 17th at Kids Funktion's Family Fiesta at Guarana (16:00 20:00). Kids Funktion owner, the wonderful Kerry Ann Young, is also donating funds from this event, and her Santa's Grotto at Project Social on Saturday the 10th, to Love From Ibiza. Tickets are available from Project Social in Santa Eulalia, at Guarana during Kids Funktion's event on the 17th, or by getting in touch with myself, Marie Duchar Clark or Liam O Dowd through Facebook. Prizes include lunches, dinners and vouchers for several island restaurants, massages, several forms of fitness training, private yoga classes, acupuncture, life coaching, clothing, jewellery, PQA membership for a year, window cleaning, tooth cleaning and much more! Get yourselves some tickets while you can...you have to be in it to win it! Once again, thank-you to every one of you for your support and love. With loads of LOVE From Ibiza. xxxxx

Noche Vieja is a night to party and the Spanish do that in style. Most offices close at lunchtime and families kick off the celebrations with another meal all together. At midnight, it is traditional to watch the special televised event from the Puerta del Sol in Madrid leading up to midnight. At the stroke of midnight eating one grape for each chime of the bell, which represents the twelve months of the year, is considered to bring good luck for the forthcoming year.

Three Kings Nicole Torres

January 6th is the Feast of the Epiphany and the twelfth day of Christmas. It is when the Three Kings of the East arrived in Bethlehem and presented their gifts to the baby Jesus. For this reason, this is the most celebrated day for children and when they usually receive the bulk of their presents, which the Kings leave for them in their homes. The eve before, on 5th December, most towns hold processions with Gaspar, Melchor and Baltasar sitting atop their own float, greeting the town’s residents and throwing kilos of sweets to all the children. In the province of Granada, in the small town in Sierra Nevada, the Three Kings actually ski into the village, while in coastal regions like Ibiza they arrive by boat. Many parents often bribe their children into being good around this time of the year, with the threat that the Kings will leave them a piece of coal (made out of sugar) instead of any presents. And the day won’t be complete without something good to eat either. It is tradition to eat a Roscón de Reyes on this day, which is a doughy sweet roll shaped into a ring, inside it there is a small baby Jesus) or toy is hidden. Whoever ends up with the trinket is considered blessed and gets to wear the paper crown that comes with the Roscón. There is also a bean inside and whoever gets that is joked about and in some houses has to pay the Roscón!

time and practice will help in understanding how the cards give insight. It sounds a little twee to say “would make a perfect Christmas gift” but they really would, and anyway, what is wrong with a little twee at Christmas? I remember the previous editor of the newspaper bought his wife a vacuum cleaner for Christmas. It was a very good vacuum cleaner but his gift of domestic servitude ensured he took quite some ribbing at the staff Christmas dinner. Rightly so. Christmas is not about practicality, it is about gifts like Mikki’s. You might not need it, but you want it, it is beautiful, it is love, and that is quite enough. Mikki will be holding an evening at Hotel Montesol as a further introduction to herself and her work, in particular her new book “True Love”.

Shebizan Amanda O’Riordan

Welcome to this bumper installment. Before we crack on with festive fashion and lifestyle, this week saw the Fashion Awards at The Royal Albert Hall on Monday evening. A celebration of the industry, a luvvie kiss (on both cheeks) and nod to all those VIPs in the world of glamour. Best bit of the night for me always has to be the Red Carpet, where we see everyone looking their very best (going into the event). Suited, booted and stitched into outfits within an inch of their lives. Before they head inside and get absolutely smashed, and try to avoid being snapped coming out, disheveled at the end of the evening. All hail The Goddesses Of Fashion (and my icons) Kate & Naomi. The veteran models showed they're still all rock and roll, as they lit up fags on the red carpet of the British Fashion Awards. Were they not physically able to wait until they were out of the public gaze? Or was this a deliberate two fingers up to the haters and disapproving judgmental Daily Mail readers? Did the Marlboro Lights and B&H accessories complete their classy ensembles? Despite being at the very posh event, held at the even posher Royal Albert Hall, both Kate and Naomi showed a brilliant lack of class by lighting up and puffing away in front of the world’s paps. I especially love the way Kate holds her fag-end like a proper gangster. All rings and

sovereigns on her fingers too. They opted for floor-skimming black gowns at the starstudded event, but while Naomi was showing off plenty of bare skin in her sheer design, Kate covered up in a classic black gown. Naomi ensured she turned heads in her sheer, sequin-dotted dress and black body. So how do we feel about this fingers up at political correctness. Despite being a non-smoker, I say “sheer brilliance!” Onto this Christmas special and its all about gift shopping before the big day, So mulled wine in one black leather gloved hand, a credit card in the other, and enjoy this weeks Amanda Zips It Up. The Ultimate Fashion Christmas Gift Guide

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Or is it? The traditional amongst us embrace everything seasonal, from mince pies, mulled wine and mistletoe to wrapping presents, carving the turkey and strategically placing presents under the tree. But if you’re like me, Christmas simply means late(r) night shopping, spending obscene amounts of money, checkout queues, traffic jams, arguments about who goes where and general stress caused by mess, mess and more mess. A little bit non-festive, I admit. Anyway, let’s start with one of the most fundamental Xmas pains in the backside – deciding what to buy ‘him’ or ‘her’. Easier said than done, that’s for sure. And whilst those twinkling lights on the high street try to bewitch you inside, along with festive carol singers outside M&S encouraging you to buy more pigs in blankets and pink fizz, for goodness sake shop for everything online. It saves heaps of frozen outdoor time, bumping into hordes of people. Here is my definitive guide to the perfect gift for him or her, guaranteed to make you both let out a huge sigh of relief on the big day.

Pretty In Pink Sophia Valentine

The majority of the time most of our outfits are chosen depending on our mood. Black is a safe colour. Not only does it create the illusion of a slimmer physique, but it matches everything. Although black clothes can look elegant, they definitely don’t stand out as much as bright colours like pinks, silvers, golds, reds etc do. Even if you’re not in the best of moods, you can still dress to impress, and fake it with your outfit. Hooked on The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, I have to give it to Englishborn and raised actress, restaurateur, author, Lisa Vanderpump. At 56, she proves that you can rock the colour

pink anywhere, anytime, and at any age! Always immaculate, she even manages to make pink look classy and mature. Whether it’s a pink dress, t-shirt, cardigan, bag, coat, heels, Lisa makes it work for almost any occasion. Not only is her stunning mansion decorated throughout in silver and pinks, but there was even a time when she had the colour streaked in her hair. There are many different shades of pink: baby pink, hot pink, fuchsia, old rose, magenta, coral, salmon, watermelon, for example, and they’re guaranteed to brighten up your outfit. You can even stand out in a subtle way by painting your nails pink, or choosing it as your lipstick shade.

It’s Good To Talk Kate Stillman

Dear Kate I have accepted a job in Ibiza, signed contracts etc. and moved over here with what I thought was a really good package of benefits. My wife and 2 children will join me after Christmas so I am trying to get settled and ready for their arrival. However, I have been totally blown away by the lack of affordable housing and generally how expensive everything is here. Part of me is angry with myself for not doing my homework but actually I love the job and am trying to find ways to make it work for us to be here. One obvious option is that my wife gets a job but she is adamant that she wants to stay at

home for at least the first 6 months to settle the kids and this is where it is beginning to get tricky. She never wanted to move, so her argument is that we just stay in the UK. Do you have any ideas of how I can tackle this issue, obviously Ibiza is what it is but I really want to find a way to make it work. Thank you in advance, MD Dear MD, Thank you for your email and sharing your difficulties with us. I can understand that you are angry with yourself and I wonder if in some way you are being consumed by that anger which in turn is preventing you

about this part of his life. In the early 14th century, Llull again visited North Africa. He returned in 1308, reporting that the conversion of Muslims should be achieved through prayer, not through military force. He finally achieved his goal of linguistic education at major universities in 1311 when the Council of Vienne ordered the creation of chairs of Hebrew, Arabic and Chaldean (Aramaic) at the universities of Bologna, Oxford, Paris, and Salamanca as well as at the Papal Court. In 1314, at the age of 82, Llull travelled again to North Africa where he was stoned by an angry crowd of Muslims in the city of Bougie. Genoese merchants took him back to Mallorca, where he died at home in Palma the following year. Though the traditional date of his death has been 29 June 1315, his last documents which date from December 1315 and recent researches point to first quarter of 1316 as most probably death date. It can be documented that Llull was buried at the Church of Saint Francis in Mallorca by March 1316. Riber states that the circumstances of his death remain a mystery. Zwemer, a Protestant missionary and academic, accepted the story of martyrdom, as did an arti-

Llull was extremely prolific, writing a total of more than 250 works in Catalan, Latin, and Arabic, and often translating from one language to the others. While almost all of his writings after the revelation on Mt. Randa connect to his Art in some way, he wrote on diverse subjects in a variety of styles and genres. The romantic novel Blanquerna is widely considered the first major work of literature written in Catalan, and possibly the first European novel. The Roman Catholic inquisitor Nicholas Eymerich condemned 100 theories or ideas of Llull as errors in 1376. Pope Gregory XI also formally condemned 20 of his books in 1376 and the condemnation was renewed by Pope Paul IV, although Pope Martin V reversed the condemnation of Pope Gregory XI in 1416. Despite these condemnations, Llull himself remained in good standing with the Church. Chairs for the propagation of the theories of Llull were established at the University of Barcelona and the University of Valencia. from really being able to focus on the main issue, which is the relationship between you and your wife. From what you say, and of course we only have one side of the story, she seems very quick to find a reason to remain in the U.K. Which makes me wonder how, even if the finances were in place, you as a family would be able to settle happily in Ibiza? I wonder if this whole move has been really talked through between the two of you and why she has not been able to be more honest about her feelings regarding the move, or if you have chosen not to hear the negatives because you were so fixed on coming? It might be worth 'going back to the drawing board' to explore the way you are communicating to be able to see if this move is genuinely best for the family. My feeling is that she has concerns, which may not have been addressed, and if between the two of you, you can start to address them together, then you begin to work as a team and I am sure she will support you. Right now, it feels as if you are both quietly pulling in opposite directions with little understanding of the others position. This may not be what you want to hear, but it does not necessarily mean the end of your dream to live in Ibiza, but what it does mean is that possibly you and your wife need to spend a little more time talking and listening to each other to create a plan that is best for all 4 of you. With the discovery in 2001 of his lost manuscripts, Ars notandi, Ars eleccionis, and Alia ars eleccionis, Llull is given credit for discovering the Borda count and Condorcet criterion, which Jean-Charles de Borda and Nicolas de Condorcet independently proposed centuries later. The terms Llull winner and Llull loser are ideas in contemporary voting systems studies that are named in honor of Llull. Also, Llull is recognized as a pioneer of computation theory, especially due to his great influence on Gottfried Leibniz. Llull's systems of organizing concepts using devices such as trees, ladders, and wheels, have been analysed as classification systems.

December 2016 ARIES - The Moon All of us have at some point, had to face our fears, take off our rose tinted glasses and see life as it really is, not how you’d like it to be. This month you’re not willing to tolerate deception and if you sense that a situation is not what it seems or someone is unreliable, your intuition is spot on. TAURUS - The World You've come a long way in the past year and can now see long held ambitions coming to fruition. You're in the process of major change, which becomes more apparent in the coming weeks. A new life means a new you, so leave behind any attitudes and behaviours that were OK in the past, but will no longer serve you now. GEMINI - Temperance Look after your health and well-being this month; take time to introduce a more harmonious way of living into your day to day life; as it’s true that what you project on to others and is mirrored back, is but a reflection of your own inner world. If any stressful situations arise, handle them rightly and it will be alright! CANCER - The Wheel of Fortune Remain optimistic if you’re to get the best out of this month; avoid being fixed in your opinions or closed minded, so be open to change. Expand your awareness of what’s going on outside your usual circle and you'll attract new opportunities as well as much needed money luck. Trust that life is looking up and abundance is on its way! LEO - The Tower Somewhere in your life, a false ideal or belief system requires dismantling. This involves great courage on your part as this will have consequences in all your relationships at work, play and domestically. If you don't initiate this process, events could be taken out of your hands. The result will be the same, radical change. See this as an amazing opportunity. VIRGO - The Magician The arcane message of the Magician reminds us to focus our attention, like a laser, on every aspect of our life. By doing so we’re capable of becoming Magicians, able to create whatever ‘magic’ we want. Some give up on their dreams and aspirations easily by accepting what others or society tells them is the norm. This month follow your truth. LIBRA - Justice This card indicates that life’s about to take you in a new direction. Not everyone will be happy with your choice however, you and only you, should be the judge of that. This month you’re able to see both sides of a sensitive situation and you may be asked to mediate; offer wise but kind advice. Creatively, you're truly inspired! SCORPIO - The Sun This wonderful card, is full of vitality and indicates good news, especially if health matters have concerned you recently. The Sun brings achievement; you reach the goal you've been aiming for or a result goes in your favour. Success requires determination; therefore you're urged to apply yourself constantly now. Doing anything half-heartedly won’t get you what you want! SAGITTARIUS - Judgement This card brings opportunities for liberation this month. Whatever force that was holding you back dissipates and you finally break free of an unsuitable situation. You've had to respond dutifully to those who've cracked the whip so plan your exit strategy with care. You might as well say what you think; so don’t hold back. Your Phoenix is rising from the ashes! CAPRICORN - The Lovers Originally, this card wasn't about love but decision making; especially when making the right one as it can be life altering. The couple depicted on this card are Adam and Eve and look what happened when picked that apple off the tree! It may involve making some drastic but necessary changes to your life. Are you bold enough to seize this opportunity? AQUARIUS - The Empress No one will fail to miss you this month as you're on a mission to impress and you won't fail your audience. If you're starting, or expanding your own business; it’s time to get going. Bring your dreams closer to reality. What you start now will bring dividends within a year; heralding a powerful time ahead. Your generosity is appreciated by others. PISCES - The Hierophant If you’ve unforeseen obstacles to important plans, don't give up on them this month. The tide turns in your favour as you receive help from an unexpected source. It's time to let go of the past; look inward for solutions to old attitudes. Ditch old routines and embrace the new. It's good to have a personal shake up now and again!

Ray Stevenson has starred in films including Thor, The Three Musketeers and The Punisher

Hollywood Actor Ray Stevenson Gives Masterclass at PQA Carly Sorenson

Hollywood Actor Ray Stevenson has spent the last two Saturdays delivering Masterclasses to PQA Ibiza students! The British actor, who has starred in films such as Thor, The Three Musketeers, Kill the Irishman, GI Joe, Divergent, The Punisher and the hit TV series Rome,

brought in props and costumes for the students to test out, demonstrated the techniques he had learnt in order to sword fight in films, taught them the importance of rhythm and dance in acting out action scenes, answered their questions and gave them invaluable expert advice about how to make it as an actor.

He regaled the enthralled kids (and staff!) with stories about his time on set with the likes of legends Ray Winstone, Christopher Walken, and Anthony Hopkins and told them how he's always had a love of acting but didn't get into it professionally until later in life. He explained that it's a tough business which requires focus, dedication, discipline, drive, punctuality and passion. I chatted to some of the kids about what the highlights were for them, one girl told me 'It was really interesting to hear him talk about what you need to become an actor', another said 'I loved all the stuff he brought in, it was really cool to look at and touch actual props and try on his armour...it was huge and really heavy!' and a young boy said he thought the best bit was 'when he cut himself a bit showing us the sword fighting. We didn't know if he was just acting or not, but I think it was real!' He clearly made a big impression! The children got a lot out of the sessions with Ray and several of them worked at home to prepare questions for him to answer, a young student from the green group was chosen as Performer of Week after coming to his first class with a list of carefully thought out and well researched questions, plus drawings, which she later gifted him. It's not every day a Hollywood actor gives his free time up to pass his skills and knowledge on to the next generation, the children of PQA were truly honoured and grateful and lots of parents hung around for longer than usual to meet or catch a glimpse of the benevolent actor. At the end of his second visit, all the students gathered together and presented him with a customized t-shirt they'd all written messages on to thank him for sharing his wisdom, expertise and huge personality with them. A true star. See PQA Advert Front Page

Sabina’s Dog Psychology “Aggression” Dear readers and dog lovers, today we have the issue of aggression.

How does aggression start in dogs ? There are different reasons, why a dog becomes aggressive. By nature, a dog is never aggressive, it is always man made. Aggression is always the result of a series of wrong running interactions between dog and owner. Aggression is always produced by humans. Amongst dogs, if no person is involved, there is no aggression, but a clear communication. Once the dog has accepted its pack leader and its rang within the pack, his position is clear. Apart from that it will recognize and accept its boundaries and limitations. Out of this discipline your dog will learn obedi-

ence in a natural way, i.e. guarding its premises. Man has invented the Guard dog and its standards as a guideline. Why? The drill as education for guard dogs belongs in the hands of institutions such as the police, military and security services ...but in no way in the hands of a private individual. The right psychology automatically creates a natural protective instinct in the dog. I never had to train any of my dogs to be a guard dog and still they were excellent guard dogs to be recalled at any time. It is a natural instinct of the dog to defend its pack and in all circumstances at any time. Here we are back to the psychology of dog training. I know about many cases of guard dog trials, where one has been working with drill and no psychology and

the outcome was an uncontrolled aggressive dog, which became a weapon. That’s why in my opinion amateur dog handlers should be prohibited to train a guard dog. The dog training is generally overestimated, because in dog training dogs learn to obey in subordination and drill. But drill has nothing to do with trust and faith, which is the base for education and a balanced relationship between dog and owner (pack leader). This is the subtle difference between drill and psychology. These are the rules for a content, relaxed and balanced relationship between dog and owner ( pack leader ): If the owner follows these rules, he brings up a perfect companion…

4 0 % exercise (walking, playing etc.)

40% discipline (following rules and limitations, submission )

20% affection (brushing, massaging, stroking, hugging, talking ) These rules are essential for puppies as well as adult dogs. It is never too late to re-socialise your dog, because it can change at any age to the right. That’s why I strongly believe in the following, which I constantly practise with all my dogs: “Only a calm submissive dog is obedient and happy … and a happy dog has a happy owner.” Talk to you soon. Sport Ibiza CC vs Alfas CC 1st XI

35 overs per side 12/11/2016 Result: Ibiza (111/3) beat Alfas (110/8) by 7 wickets

New Skipper Sam Gooda put the hosts into bat first and Ibiza's new pair of opening bowlers Sam Feasey and Steve Hadlow exerted pressure at once, despite a couple of aggressive boundaries from Alfas opener Kevin Laundon (15). However, thanks to two reflex slip catches, the hosts were soon on 19/2, 33/4, and then 55/5, and it was only a cameo innings of 23 from Skipper Jamie Roper that kept the runs flowing. But when he departed to a top edged drive, Alfas were on 71/6, and then lost another two quick wickets to find themselves on an unusually low scoring 81/8 off 21 overs. It was only a watchful partnership of 30 from veteran batsman Geoff Evans (17 not out) and young Kieran Roper (10 not out) that allowed the hosts to finish on an under par 110/8 off 35 overs. Steve Hadlow (3/23), Sam Feasey (2/38) and Paul Cruttwell (2/8) were the pick of the Ibiza bowlers, but the whole Ibiza team deserves credit for their enthusiastic fielding and tight bowling which helped to restrict runs throughout. Ibiza thus had an achievable target to reach, but first their openers Tim Stacey and Sam Gooda had to withstand early pressure from the Alfas pace bowlers Jamie Roper and Bashar Ali. The former went early, and then another wicket fell, before Sam Gooda (22) and Sam Feasey (37 not out) combined in a crucial stand of 48 runs to bring their

Ibiza Cricket Club Annual Beano Benidorm Match target closer. When the skipper was out, the score was 68/3 so anything was possible, but the experienced Graeme Cooper (20 not out) joined Sam Feasey, and they ensured there were no other alarms, reaching 111/3 in the 28th over. Ibiza thus won the Saturday match against Alfas for only the second time in 23 years (with both teams missing a couple of regular players), so well done to everyone involved! For the Alfas bowlers, Jamie

Tennis: Our Andy, What A Magnificent Year!

Great to see Andy Murray retain his World No 1 status after thumping Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the Final of the end-of-season ATP Finals at the 02. Mind you, t'wasn't plain sailing as, in the Semi, he came up against a very determined Milos Raonic in a 3'38 minute epic with both players squandering match points. Djokovic on the other hand came in to the Final looking calm and collected having beaten Nishikori in an hour in his Semi. So, what a calendar year for the Scot having won 9 titles, including Olympic Gold and Wimbledon, as well as reaching the Aussie and French Finals, with his form since July being amazing, ending the year on a 24 match unbeaten run. The challenge, now, of course, is for him to keep his great form going and stay at No 1 and with Djokovic determined to regain his status, 2017 promises to be a cracker for both players and tennis fans alike.

Roper (1/15), Bashar Ali (1/10) and the ageless Paul Taylor (1/16 and 76 years'young!) obtained the wickets to fall.

Ibiza CC vs

Alfas CC 2nd XI

30 overs per side 13/11/2016 Result: Ibiza (137/5) beat Alfas (132/9) by 5 runs

This time, Ibiza batted first and started badly, losing a wicket from a direct hit in the second over! They then had to fend off some accurate bowling for several overs before scoring, and once on 15, another wicket fell. The rate run was only 3 per over at 42/3 off 14 overs, with skipper Sam Gooda reaching 22 before departing at 65/4, so it needed someone to step up and score more runs. Fortunately for Ibiza, all rounder Steve Hadlow (50) and vice captain

Rugby Union: England Make It 14 Wins From 14 Games!

Well, what a difference a year makes for England. This time last year they were being shunted out of the World Cup in their own backyard, the first time ever that a host nation had not made it past the group stages, which brought about a change in management and coaching staff and the introduction of tough Aussie coach Eddie Jones. And what a difference he has made as England rounded off their Autumn Test Series with 4 straight Twickenham wins, over South Africa (37-21 and the first time for 10 years that they had actually beaten the 'Boks!), Fiji (58-15), Argentina (27-14) and Australia (37-21 and England's 4th consecutive win over their arch enemies) to extend their unbeaten record to 14 matches, thereby equalling the record of Martin Johnson's World Cup winning team of 2003. Next up for the world No 2 rated team is the 6 Nations in February, and whisper it only, but if England were to win the Grand Slam they would actually beat the All Black's record of 18 straight wins, which was brought to an end in Chicago by a rampant Ireland, winning 40-29, the first time the men in green had beaten the All Blacks in 103 years! Revenge was instant though as NZ then came back to Dublin and won the return, but, give credit to the Irish as, far from being downhearted, they went on to beat Australia 27-24 and claim a double of sorts. Wales showed that they are a work in progress as they were thumped 32-8 by the Aussies, scraped a 33-30 win over Ja-

Paul Cruttwell (27 not out) forged a 64 run partnership that allowed Ibiza to finally post a competitive 137/5 off their 30 overs. For Alfas, Hamza, Ransom and Ahmed got a wicket each, there also being 2 run out from direct hits. When the hosts batted, their openers Mark Perman (49) and Waqar Ashraf (28) scored steadily in a 58 run opening stand, before the latter departed. Several more wickets fell to leave them on 74/4 off 16 overs,

but still in line with the required run rate. They had reached 105/4, needing another 33 runs off 6 overs, when veteran Ibiza bowler Jeremy Parmenter stepped up and bowled a remarkable and totally unexpected maiden over with 4 wickets off consecutive balls, reducing Alfas to a precarious 105/8! He then achieved his "five for" in his next over, and the hosts still needed 20 runs off 3 overs, with one wicket left, ensuring an exciting finish! Veteran Alfas all rounder John Braithwaite struck a few boundaries in his defiant 29 not out, but they fell just short, finishing on 132/9, with Ibiza running out winners of a tight contest by only 5 runs! Of the Ibiza bowlers, Jeremy Parmenter achieved an impressive 5/18, with Paul Cruttwell (2/9) and newcomer Max Hughes (2/30) also standing out, while all the bowlers did well, and the fielding was once again lively and alert, which is not what spectators usually witness from Ibiza players in the Sunday match! This is the last report for 2016, so it could not be complete without thanking the Alfas players who always welcome us back every year, especially Kevin, Geoff, John, Mark and Jane plus the wives who make the teas; thanks go also to the large group of Ibiza supporters who made the trip and were treated to a wonderful weekend of cricket as well as plenty of lager! Also to scorer Dave Reynolds, umpires Vincent and Bobby, and last but certainly not least to outgoing Skipper Graham Boe, who is stepping down due to work committments, and managed to captain a disparate group of noisy players for 2 years! We wish him all the best. RPHood

pan and 24-20 over Argentina but then came good with a 2713 win over S.Africa. As for Scotland, they lost narrowly to Australia (23-22) but beat Argentina 19-16 and then Georgia 43-16. In the domestic Premiership, after 10 matches and nearing the halfway mark, Saracens still lead the table but only by a point having just been beaten by Bath at the Rec, with Wasps in 2nd after their latest win, 26-12 at Worcester, with Bath two points further back in 3rd. Perennial play-off team Leicester are in 4th, Exeter are in 5th but Newcastle are having a bit of a revival, now =6th, having just beaten Quins to record their 5th win, whilst poor old Bristle prop up the table, having lost all their matches so far. Let's hope a change of coaching staff, headed by my old mate Mark Tainton, replacing ex-England and Scotland manager Andy Robinson, can halt their progress to relegation for this ailing but historical club.

Cricket: England Up Against It In India!

After England scraped through their Bangladesh Tour with a 1-1 Test Series draw, it was on to India, a much more daunting task and so it has proved. Having appeared to hold their own in the 1st Test (of 5) and managing to get away with a draw, Cook's boys are really up against it now having lost the last two, firstly in Visakhapatnam where they crumbled to a 246 run defeat, only scoring 413 runs in 2 innings and then in Mohali to an even more humiliating defeat inside 4 days, this time by 8 wickets, again only scoring 519 runs in 2 innings.

former being most likely. Alonso has also been mentioned in the running; however his contract is still valid at McLaren and they didn’t part on the friendliest terms back at McLaren. So what did the bookies say? William Hill had Wehrlein, who scored a point for lowly Manor this year, at 3-1 with Alonso and Vettel both joint second favorites at 5-1. Britain's Jenson Button, meanwhile, was 10-1 to call off his retirement.

It was the race to end all races and the World Champion decider. Hamilton had pole, led and won the race but it wasn’t enough, even with some tactical driving at the end. Rosberg was crowned the 2016 World Champion emulating his father’s title 34 years ago. Both Massa and Button said goodbye to the sport in the final race of their F1 careers, and in a shock announcement just 5 days after clinching the title, Nico Rosberg also announced his retirement from the motorsport. Both Mercedes started well and it was business as usual until the first set of pit stops, Rosberg found himself held and released after the Red Bull of Verstappen. In trying

to pass the Dutchman two laps after his pit stop, Verstappen defended aggressively and Rosberg had to sit back and bide his time, the call came over the radio lap 19 that the move was critical and he responded by regaining second place. As the race continued Hamilton lapped just as fast as he needed, with the hope that Vettel or Verstappen may be able to get among the two Mercedes. This caused a number of frustrated radio messages, from drivers and teams, but all was in vain as Hamilton took the chequered flag with Rosberg P2, and Vettel P3 for Ferrari. The Red Bull of Verstappen finished P4 after his tyres started to drop off, ahead of his teammate Ricciardo, P5. It

So, at 2-0 down with 2 to play, Thursday's 4th Test in Mumbai is a must win match for England, otherwise it's a Series defeat, a surefire downer before the ODI Series gets underway after the New Year. Having said that, India are not the World No 1 Test team for nowt and with their recent home record and their variety of spin, it was always going to be a big task. Some crumbs of comfort tho' as Australia are on the ropes as well, having lost their last 5 Test matches, culminating in a 2-1 Series home loss to South Africa, so no tears there for the Barmy Army!

Football: At Last A Thoroughbred England Manager

After a successful unbeaten set of trial matches including an important win over the Auld Enemy Scotland in the World Cup qualifying Group, the FA have at last appointed a young, sensible, intelligent, English and experienced manager in Gareth Southgate with a contract thru' to 2020. Having been a successful player and having gained both domestic and international management experience, firstly with Middlesboro' and then with the England U-21's, it was really a foregone conclusion that he should step in to the role vacated by Sam Allardyce after his sacking from the post. So, good luck to you Gareth but beware the poisoned chalice! In Europe, and the Champions League with the final group match to go, Leicester, Arsenal and Manchester City are

thru' to the first knock-out round but it's adios to Tottenham with only the Europa League to aim for whilst in said competition, also with a group match to go, Man Utd need a point to go thru' whilst Southampton desperately need a win. Domestically, in the League Cup the Quarter Finals were completed with the Semi-Final now made up of Man Utd/ Hull and Liverpool/Southampton and don't bet against Jose lifting the Cup with his United team as he always seems to start off his English sojourns with a League Cup win, vis-a-vis Chelsea, twice! Talking of the Blues, what a transformation over the last two months, ever since manager Conte switched to his preferred system of 3-4-3 after a 3-0 thumping by Arsenal in September, as they sit proudly at the top of the Premier, 3 points clear, after a stunning run of 8 consecutive PL wins, 22 goals for and only 2 against (and one of those was an own goal!), including their latest two wins against title contenders Tottenham (2-1 at the Bridge) and Man City (3-1 at the Etihad). It's still early days but with Costa and Hazard back to their best and sharing 18 goals between them, Chelsea are now definite title hopefuls. As for their rivals, Arsenal are right up there in 2nd having just beaten West Ham 5-1 away and are still unbeaten since the first match of the season; Liverpool, in 3rd, were looking pretty good until last week when they threw away a 2-0 lead at Bournemouth to lose 4-3 in a humdinger of a match but no doubt, under Klopp, they'll be there come May; Pep at Man City, now in 4th, has some serious disciplinary issues to sort out, having just lost striker Aguero for the next 4 matches as well as midfield enforcer Fernandinho for the next 3, both having received recent red cards; Tottenham lost their unbeaten record to Chelsea but are still up there in 5th after their recent 5-0 hammering of Swansea; Jose's Man Utd are in 6th, 13 points behind the leaders, after too many draws culminating

in last week's 1-1 at Everton while West Bromwich, in 7th, are in a rich vein of form after their last 3-1 win at home to Watford; Stoke seem to have pulled their socks up at last as Mark Hughes has no doubt laid down the law to his previously misfiring stars and have now climbed up the table to 9th. Southampton took a bit of a tumble, 3-0 at Palace in their last match but are comfortably mid-table altho' Palace, in 13th, are only 3 points from the relegation places as are Burnley after their recent 2-0 loss at Stoke. As for Champions Leicester, what a disaster in the PL especially after qualifying as group leaders in the Champions League, a real Jekyll and Hyde situation for Ranieri, as they now lie 15th and only 2 points from the relegation zone after their 2-1 loss at Sunderland, another team who seem to be turning the corner but are still there in the bottom 3 as are Hull who suffered yet another loss on Monday at Middlesboro', this time 1-0. Finally, propping up the lot are Swansea, who have now lost 9 from 14 and are looking in serious trouble. In the Championship, after 19 games, Newcastle Utd are top but only a point above Brighton, with Reading, Leeds Utd, Birmingham and Sheffield Wed currently in the play-off places. Finally, in La Liga, Real Madrid remain top having opened up a 6 point lead over arch-rivals Barcelona after the first El Clasico of the season where the former needed a last ditch 90th minute goal to earn a point at the Camp Nou. Sevilla are in 3rd, 7 points behind Real, with Atletico Madrid back in 4th a further 2 points behind. ' Tis all for now, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year and we'll be back early Jan. ¡Feliz Navidades y Malts Anys I Bons! …..Jezza

From Fairy-tale To Forlorn Hope: Formentera Go Down 1-5 to Sevilla Jezza’s World of Sport Hi, Sports fans, seems an awful long time since I had to put to me digits to the keyboard but now that we're on to the winter schedule and only publishing on the first Thursday of the month, I shall be concocting a Sporting World update for the preceding month, so, here we go for November! Local Football We’ll start at the top and bottom, as far as the hierarchy of football is concerned, and the visit of La Liga’s Sevilla to Spanish third tier minnow Formentera in the 4th Round, 1st leg of the Copa del Rey. A group of us Ibiza Cricket Club members, including a

number of Senior Citizens (yours truly included!) attended the match in Sant Francesc just for the experience and were very impressed with the attention that the Formenterans had given to the match. The game drew a crowd of 2,500 in a stadium that normally holds around 300 if they're lucky! Ed: Bookmakers are currently offering 2,500 to 1 on Formentera winning by the 5 goal margin necessary to take them through to the next round in the return leg on Wednesday 21st December. Formentera may take some hope from that being half the odds of 5,000 to 1 that were offered for Leicester City to win the 2016 Premier League. You have to hand it to Formentera as not only were they the only representative of some 360 clubs in the Tercera Division to get through this far, but, to be honest, they weren't humiliated by the La Liga side who have won the Europa League for the last 3 seasons defeating Liverpool in last season's Final despite being 30 down at half-time, are 5 time winners of this competi-

Beefa Barmy Army Beat Benidorm, Page 30 verted, in the first minute. Although 4-1 down at halftime, they can take pride in only having lost the second half 1-0, to another penalty. Some interesting facts came out of this match such as there were 80 journalists in attendance, including 2 from Japan, the match was televised on both National and local TV, and Sevilla were only the 5th La Liga team to visit the Pitiusas in the Copa del Rey, following Atletico Madrid, Real Mallorca, Valladolid and Zaragoza. Let's just hope Formentera can do well in Sevilla in the 2nd leg and hold their heads high. A final point, why oh why were there so many Police there? Riot police, Guardia Civil and Local Police and I counted at least 7 Guardia Nissans and 4 motorbikes on the ferry (Continued on page 30)
