691 Underground Parking Places In Ibiza Port The Balearic Islands port authority and Ibiza town council have released details of a 27million euro project to build parking for 691 vehicles underground at what is the current fishing pier. The aim is to alleviate the lack of parking in the port especially during the tourist season. According to the president of this state body, Joan Gual de Torrella, the director thereof, Juan Carlos Plaza, and the mayor of Ibiza, Rafa Ruiz, the car park will have an area of 18,272 square metres and consist of a single floor. Although defined as an underground car park, only 2 of the 6 metres of height will be below sea level “making more floors and going to greater depth will make the works much more expensive”. Of the 691 places there will be 21 reserved for people with reduced mobility. The entrance will be next to the maritime office and connect to the roundabout of Podencos. It was confirmed that the project would be awarded before the end of the year, however this is subject to resolution of the usage delimitation plan of the port of Ibiza which is awaiting Ministry of Development ratification. Once works begin it will take a year and a half to complete during which time the Fishermen's Association and the fishing wharf will be moved, as well as the other affected installations. The port authority has not yet decided where these facilities will be relocated to. Residents Parking It could not be confirmed which proportion of parking could be reserved for residents and businesses who have been campaigning for solutions to the lack of parking. When questioned by journalists at the press conference the mayor of Ibiza said, "The Port Authority is sensitive to what neighbourhood associations are asking for", although he pointed out that it will be the specifications that will determine this issue. "Within what determines the specifications and legality, we will try to satisfy this demand. It is working, and it is still too early to say in what situation it will be ». "It has always been said that they will have a different treatment," Ruiz added, although he reiterated: "We will work to achieve this goal, within reason, but it is still too early to say in what conditions it will be done". Similarly, it is also not possible to know the price that users will have to pay for each space, something that must also determine the specifications that are drawn up.

The cost of the work is estimated at 27 million euros, explained the director of the Port Authority. According to the requirements derived from the General Plan of Urban Planning of Ibiza, each parking space must have a minimum size of 2.20 by 4.20 metres, although 10% of the spaces will have to have a length of 4.80 metres. The minimum height will be 2.20 metres.

New Long-Term Parking For 200 At Ibiza Airport AENA, the Spanish airport authority has announced details of 200 additional long-term parking places at Ibiza airport. The parking, which is already open, is only available by prior booking through the Ibiza airport website or the AENA mobile app. It is located in the staff car parks known as ‘E3’ which is accessed through barriers directed to the cargo terminal. In a statement AENA said users “can enjoy the peace of mind knowing their vehicle will not be moved or manipulated” and that the car park is monitored 24hours a day.

San An Parking “Impossible” The Parking shambles continues in San Antonio with nobody clear where the new blue zones are supposed to be in force, whether the timeclocks are in force, and the police still refusing to enforce laws which they say are not visible to the public due to a lack of signage of information. San An resident Kevin Wakefield summed up the situation in his minimalist post today, “San Antonio Parking, Impossible”. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

News Airport Queues Will Be Gone “In A Few Weeks” AENA has attributed the long queues experienced in traversing security controls at Ibiza airport, to current works. They have stated that the current 2 security desks will be increased to 5 when these works are finished “in few weeks”. Speaking of the collapse in all transits from the airport on Sunday, they said tis was due to a combination of effects including an electrical storm, airline cancellations, compounded by the long queues through security. To avoid a repetition of this situation, AENA de Balears says that it plans to reinforce staff for the summer season though does not specify how many will be recruited or when.

Shebizan  Amanda O’Riordan We’re back! After a week in the blingtastically boiling Dubai, I return tanned, refreshed and half a stone heavier. It was Ramadan during our stay, and it was fascinating observing how Muslims are so strict with themselves in observing fasting-by-day. Non -fasting people eat in restaurants behind sheets and boarded up windows, to respect those fasting around them. During this holy month ruled by the moon, Muslims fast (do not eat or drink) in order to ‘re-set’ bodies and minds, and observe a time of peace. I would happily do the same myself, but lack the self -discipline. Indeed, I returned half a stone heavier, and admit that I did indeed scoff behind those sheets and boarded up windows. I also enjoyed the insanely hot temperatures. It never dipped below 32, even at night and peaked at 42 degrees. The other members of my family hated it, but as one who loves to boil, I was in my element. My other half has a “hipster” beard, meaning that he had extra Arabic warmth to contend with. Interestingly, on this exact subject, I hear that hipsters’ worst nightmares came true, when a recent poll revealed that 43% of women wouldn’t sleep with a bearded man. It appears facial fuzz puts women off. Clearly, I think this is ridiculous, since I’m married to one. To add insult to injury, novelist Jilly Cooper claims that bearded men cry all the time and are scared of women. Hmmm. The stats roll on. Apparently, 1 in 5 men struggle to grow chest hair, whilst 1 in 10 who can shave it off, 7% snip it, 3% wax it and 1% get laser hair removal. Men from the West Midlands have the most self-confidence, with Northern Irish men being the least confident. Although clearly not in Jamie Dornan’s case. Sounds like a load of rubbish – but just the sort of trivia that makes the world go round. Onto this week’s instalment of Zips It Up, and we check out an Aussie Menswear label, Ibiza’s top nail & lash technicians and discover how love eggs are good for your health, not just an orgasm. Apache Street Wear G’day. Meet two UK friends living the dream Down Under. Richard Cook, a Software Developer originally from Hertfordshire, and Joe Ames, a Car Detailer and former Bouncer from Birmingham, were having a beer at their local Aussie pub, when they noticed the lack of decent ‘Street Wear’ from the smaller menswear brands. Most brands were run by large multi million dollar companies and didn’t leave enough room in the marketplace for the smaller independent labels. So, the boys decided to see if they could give it a go. After month or so, they decided on a manufacturer of apparel they liked, to kick off the online shop while they were working on the brand itself. And so, Apache Street wear was born. Richard and Joe are also working on a selection of women’s apparel under the guise of Clair De Lune Avenue, which will feature a classic selection of ladies dresses, body suits and accessories. The main focus at the moment is to build a strong quality brand from Apache and Clair De Lune, while keeping reasonable pricing but still maintaining high quality. The menswear collection is vast but here are a few of my favourites. https://apachestreetwear.com

Yoni Egg Practice We’ve all heard of ‘Love Eggs’, but I have it on reliable authority that they’re not simply for self-pleasure. With the crystal healing assistance of certain stones, they can also bring health benefits to the female pelvic region, kidney and liver, plus reduce anxiety levels. Introducing you to the yoni egg. My friend, sex therapist Myra S Forrester, is the expert on the subject. “Firstly, let me explain what a Yoni is. Yoni, in the Indian Sanskrit language, means ‘Sacred Temple’ and refers to a woman’s vagina. Don’t you think this is a far more beautiful word to use compared to vagina, which literally means ‘sheath for a man’s sword’?” “A yoni egg is an egg-shaped stone or crystal used to insert inside the yoni (vagina) to strengthen and tone the entire pelvic region – the pelvic floor muscles, the lower abdomen, the urogenital diaphragms and even the lower back.” “Let’s talk about how we can physically benefit from using the yoni egg. A weak pelvic floor can cause all types of health issues like prolapse, urinary problems or a feeling of nothingness during sex. But when it’s strong and healthy you can experience…more intense orgasms and not just clitoral! Here some further benefits to using the eggs on a regular basis: • Improves overall life-force energy or “chi” in the body • Boosts sexual energy levels and awakens the libido. • Helps to prevent prolapse • Relieves incontinence (weak bladder) • Balances hormones by increasing blood flow to the area, which contributes to youthfulness Yoni Egg Crystals Available: Amethyst: Third Eye Chakra. Meditation and higher consciousness stone. Supports sobriety and helps heal addictions. Better sleep. Calms mind. Emotional centering. Cleanses aura. £poa Black Obsidian: Grounding. Protection stone. Clearing and shields negative energy. Activates and stimulates Base Chakra. Animal energy. Heals sexual trauma. £20-£90. Set of 3. £75 , set of three with wand £90 If you’re beginning the Yoni Egg Practice, I suggest you start with a drilled egg. A drilled egg has an intentionally made small hole running through the smaller end of the stone, which you can then tie a 30cm piece of hemp string (or unwaxed dental floss) through, making it easier for removal. With a string tied through the drilled hole, you can remove the egg as if you would a tampon or eve cup. Myra S Forrester, Wild Women, Massage Therapist & Intimacy Coach +44(0)7905 597963

Food & Drink  There are many versions of Ensalada Payesa, this one

comes from Maria José, Directo al Paladar. As with all Ensalada Payesas, you can add more or less of the ingredients as you wish. You can also try adding chopped boiled eggs or anchovies. Remember to dress this salad with a good amount of olive oil.

Ingredients 6-8 Small potatoes 1/2 Green pepper peppers – chopped 1/2 Onion – sliced 3 Fresh tomatoes 3 Tins of tuna 2 Small bowls of stuffed olives Olive oil Salt

Method

Ensalada Payesa/Ibicencan Salad

Traditional Bread Making  Can Muson Organic Farm, Santa Eulalia While the oven warms up you begin to make the dough, adding the traditional Ibicencan ingredients, mixing and knead the mixture. When the dough has the necessary consistency, you then give it shape. At this point sourdough is used that has been made the previous day because it needs to rest during the night. When the stone oven reaches the desired temperature the

ashes are removed and the bread put in. When it is done, you can take it home to enjoy its unique and delicious flavour. The class costs 20€ and lasts around 2.5 hours, they run from 9am-2pm. Classes are taught in Spanish and English in groups of 8-16 participants. Children are welcome and classes are available all year.

Wash the potatoes and put them in a pan of cold water. Boil the potatoes for approximately 30mins. You will know they are ready as when you pierce them with a knife they slide off. Let the potatoes cool completely on a plate and cut the tomatoes and green pepper into cubes, and the onion into thin slices. Drain the tuna and crumble it with a fork. Peek the potatoes and cut them into cubes. Add all the ingredients into a salad bowl, drain the olives, cut them in half and add them to the salad stirring well. Finally, season with plenty of olive oil and salt.

News Airport Pirate Taxi Driver Found With Hidden Drugs San Jose local police were alerted by a registered taxi driver to the presence of a possible pirate taxi using the taxi bays. The agents intercepted the alleged pirate taxi initially issuing a fine for his traversing into the taxi lane. In the course of their interaction and identification the agents observed that the taxi driver was carrying a large amount of money. When asked where he had obtained the money, the driver became nervous and incoherent in his answers. Having had their suspicions raised the police proceeded to undertake a superficial physical search of the driver and an extensive search of the vehicle. They found drugs hidden in the engine compartment under the battery cover. Several plastic bags with presumed narcotic substances were confiscated and having been weighed by the airport Guardia Civil, and being found to surpass the amount stipulated for own consumption, he was then arrested for a public health crime supplying drugs in addition to the 200€ levy imposed for the traffic violation. No information was given as to the crime of driving a pirate taxi.

San Jose Confirms 33 Beach Concessions, 57 Await Decision San Jose town council. Have finally confirmed 33 concessions on beaches throughout the municipality: Platja d'en Bossa, Cala de Bou, Cala Bassa, Cala Tarida, Cala Vedella, Cala Carbó and Cala d'Hort. The beach concessions confirmed to date equate to 1.5million euros in revenue. Some of the concessions awarded are also conditional on implementation of environmental projects totalling 90,000 euros. These initiatives will be developed in collaboration with NGOs in Ibiza and include actions such as the removal of plastic, protection of Posidonia and inclusion of people with special needs. 57 remaining Speaking for the 57 concessions still outstanding the council said they hoped to give them the green light in the coming days. Delays in the issue of licences following the town halls

closed bidding process have caused considerable descent among businesses servicing the beaches and existing concession holders. The auction process in 2018 followed the highly controversial open bidding process in 2016. Prior to the commencement of the 2018 auction San Jose reduced the number of beach beds throughout the boroughs beaches by 873. The beaches on which beds have been reduced include Cala Bassa, Platges de Comte, Jondal, Cala d'Hort, Cala Carbó, Cala Tarida, Cala Molí, Cala Vedella, Bol Nou and Xarco. The Consistory has authorized a maximum of 10% occupation of beaches considered natural. Significant reductions have also been made on urban beaches where the City Hall had detected a saturation of elements, such as Platja d'en Bossa and Port des Torrent.

This Is The House Most Desired By The British One of Britain’s property sales portals, Zoopla, have released a list of their 10 most visited properties for sale. Heading the list in number 1 position is this house in Ibiza for sale at 18million euros.

The house has 600 square metres built on what is described simply as a ‘huge’ plot. It has 10 rooms, 10 bathrooms and spectacular views of the Dalt Villa and Formentera. Add to this a barbecue area, swimming

pool, tennis court and a jacuzzi on the roof and there is every reason to see its attraction. Despite this, the property has failed to find a buyer in its 7 months availability on the market.

Es Calonet (cala Tarida)

Welcome to Ibiza

 Freo’s Finest “Snuff, Puff, and Party Stuff”, possibly the best and certainly the most accurately descriptive business strap-line we’ve heard in Ibiza. Poppers, seeds, mushroom kits, and more bongs than the collected works of Cheech and Chong. Plus they offer home/hotel delivery—smoking!

 Royal Plaza The Royal Plaza offer a taste of traditional 4 star quality and service from the days before corporate branding made hotels anonymous. If you are already here you can’t take advantage of the superb accommodation—but remember it for next time. You can however enjoy a meal on their rooftop terrace with unrivalled views over the Dalt Vila. Special, very special.

San Antonio Bay Food & Drink  Little India, Authentic Sri Lankan & Indian Restaurant The restaurant that puts the Bom in the Bay, Chef Vipula puts his Sri Lankan heritage into every delicious dal, beautiful biriyani and majestic madras that leaves his kitchen. Unsurprisingly, it can get busy in the summer months, so if planning ahead a booking on their website is a good idea. If exhausted by a hard day on the beach, a take-away service is available to be enjoyed back in the hotel – expect neighbourenvy as those glorious smells waft across the balcony.

 Aperture, Cocktail, Music & Sunset Terracce In the heart of San Antonio Bay, Aperture Terrace is something of an Ibizan secret, a hidden gem. Invisible from the street, just a few footsteps upstairs take you to a chic retreat that could be a million miles from the hustle & bustle below.

On behalf of all of us who live and work in Ibiza, most of whom earn our living directly or indirectly from the tourism sector, we welcome you to the Island. Book a bed by day, dip in the pool and delight at the menu, or make it your sunset choice for cocktails where the only crush is the ice in your mojito. Just don’t tell everybody.

 Johnny’s Pub, Established 1993 Johnny’s is a Bay institution. Popular with locals and tourists alike, they are open for food to eat in and takeaway from morning through to late—usually very late, and at some point on your holiday, you’ll be glad of that. We locals can’t have their exceptional English breakfast (above) as often as we’d like, but you’re on holiday, so indulge yourself. Just 4,75€ gets you double British sausage and bacon, double egg, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, fried slice, toast and tea or coffee—plus a portion of jam for reasons we’ve never fully understood.

 Relish Restaurant & Lounge Bar Just footsteps from the beach of Cala De Bou, the restaurant and bar extends into a large covered terrace, gardens and a private pool for the exclusive use of relish patrons. Booking with immediate confirmation is available on the website.

 More Great Food You’ll also find great food in Donnegans Irish Pub, Playa Bella and Kumharas—all of whom are listed in the entertainment section. Browse their range of jetskis, stand up paddle, seadoos, speedboat trips, and the awesome hoverboard and flyboard sessions, from the comfort of their shop, and then take the activity from any of their four beach concessions—which makes them one of the biggest watersports operators in Ibiza. If not near the shop you can also book online via their website. See ad right for details and location.

Peppers2 Party Bar Dance till dawn? You betcha, and we don’t want any of that ‘I’m too old for all that now’ nonsense either. In Ibiza there is no such thing as too old, and Peppers2 is a fine example of an all night party bar that will see everybody from barely legal to rather regal bopping the night away. See the agenda for special events, but every night you are guaranteed a warm welcome from Chaz and the team. Take a cocktail or two on the terrace, then head inside to show us your moves.

metres. Cast all thoughts of a British barbeque aside– Ibiza’s best grill restaurants, of which Sa Brasa is undoubtedly one, take the concept of charcoal grilling to another level. The emphasis is all about providing the very best quality cuts of meat, and fresh fish that may well have been swimming within sight of the restaurant earlier the same day. You need to have a grill meal at least once while you are here, but if you do it early in your holiday our bet is you’ll be back for more.

Fancy some good old family cabaret? The Playa Bella apartments kick off with nightly cash Bingo hosted by our own mister thriller from Aston Villa, Chip, and once your eyes are restored to their regular horizontal position, the night continues with a roster of live cabaret featuring everything from tribute acts to comedy to drag and some very talented musical acts.  Mariposa Pool Bar & Restaurant, Cala Llonga

 Ibosim Brewhouse

Entertainment

Tough to know whether to list Ibosim brewhouse in ‘food & drink’ or ‘things to do’. As bars are hardly in short supply in Ibiza, and Ibosim offers so much more, we decided on the latter. Ibosim is the first and only beer produced in Ibiza. Visit the brewery and enjoy a worthy range of craft beers on the taproom terrace, or take it a step further and ask about their brewery tours. Ibosim are 50m from Port des Torrent beach.

There can be little doubting the vegan credentials of Los Otros, as not only do they offer a fine range of Italian food, the owner is an authoritative author of vegan cookbooks too. The setting is magical. Just meters from the water on the marina front of Santa Eulalia, your visit will have the reassuringly relaxing soundtrack of the clinking masts of moored yachts.

Don’t know what to get your mates at work—how about some matching grinders? Of course it doesn’t have to be a gift, what better way to fill that last space in the suitcase than with some stock from Grow Submarine’s extensive range of cannabis culture stock? La Cantina is a bar and restaurant right on San Antonio’s fountains square. A local legend, it has stood in the same spot and run by the same family since way back when it was by some way the biggest building on the waterfront in what was an unrecognisable San Antonio. With a pedigree of such distinction, you won’t find a better place for a traditional Paella or some fresh caught local fish. But it also offers far more. The La Cantina kitchen is also home to 3 specialist chefs each taking care over their respective Thai, Indian and TexMex division.

At last the summer season is here again and so is the Thursday evening Hippie Market in Cala Llonga. The market takes place every Thursday evening from 6pm with an array of locally hand crafted articles such as clothes, jewellery, trinkets, pottery and much more, produced by some of Ibiza's finest artisans all at reasonable prices. Located on the promenade it's a perfect place to wander along under the evening stars while listening to live music, looking for a perfect gift, souvenir or personal treat. In addition to this there's a wide variety of international bars and restaurants for you to enjoy and a safe playground for the little ones. There's ample free parking just a few metres away.

Food & Drink See adverts on facing page, front page & food and drink page for contacts, hours, and location.

 Tapas Restaurant and Lounge Bar One top tip to start with—it is best to book. Tapas is one of the most popular places to eat in San An, and in the height of summer you may have quite a wait to get seated if you haven't booked in advance. Tapas is all about global flavours, but served in a traditional Spanish Tapas style of small plates perfect for sharing. They have a fantastic range of vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options on the menu too.

Entertainment  Eden Eden’s no expense spared refit has resulted in a club at the forefront of its peers, but retaining the legendary status as one of Ibiza’s seven-sisters superclubs. A flagship Void install, in the right hands the music at Eden will make you feel music as you have never felt it before. See our ‘At Night’ and ‘Agenda’ sections for what’s on.

Putting the VIP experience within reach of non-VIP pockets, it is the perfect place to experience some style for a night out, or as a party starter for later clubbing. Plastik’s masterful resident DJs are joined most nights of the week by headliners from some of Ibiza’s biggest club nights.

 Viva Tennis With 5 top quality courts (2 clay, 3 artificial grass), a bar, pool, sun-terrace and beautiful garden Viva Tennis is the essential destination on Ibiza to play tennis and relax with friends. Community Weather Friday 8th—Thursday 14th June 2018 ARIES - Knight of Cups A peace offering is graciously accepted as you feel that it's time to bury a hatchet. Show how honest, understanding and caring you are and others will respond positively by meeting you half way. Acknowledging that situations could have been handled better in the past is a sign of wisdom. Romantically for some, this Knight brings a new admirer! TAURUS - King of Cups A week to express your loyal and loving self as you take off the mask to let your sensitive side come to the fore. Being vulnerable allows others to offer support and by being caring, you’ll be appreciated even more. Family means everything this week. Water sign men, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces prove most helpful and charming towards you. GEMINI – The Star Oh to be you this week! This card is a wonderful affirmation that you’re on the right path, so go ahead and dream your dreams as they will soon become your reality. If situations have stagnant in an important area of life, you’ll now see hopeful signs of progress. You’re supported by the heavens so have faith in your vision. CANCER - Ace of Pentacles Water signs love their creature comforts, which is why they're willing to work hard for what they want. This is the best money card in the TAROT deck so is great for benefiting materially. The higher energy of this Ace brings gifts of wisdom; if we acknowledge our intuitive ability. Be open to new ideas and expand your spiritual side. LEO - Two of Swords You should be feeling less upset about recent differences in opinion that can now be settled amicably. Blessed are the peace makers, as the saying goes. Admit where you went wrong and associates will be keen to kiss and make up. When emotionally challenged you more than most, go on the attack; however, your week ends on a calmer note. VIRGO - Two of Pentacles Like ocean tides, the ebb and flow of our finances can be influenced by lunar energy. Therefore, I suggest you curb any unnecessary outlay until after the full moon on the 2nd of July. Virgo’s are sensible when it comes to money and love to spend money on gadgets, which come at a price. Unforeseen expenses could crop up. LIBRA – Strength You’re able to show others just how strong and resilient you are, especially if the going gets tough this week. Whatever presents you with a challenge is easily dealt with and you are an inspiration to friends, family or colleagues when it comes to dealing with obstacles. Stand your ground, but do so with dignity. Resist the urge for revenge. SCORPIO - The Fool Trust is a key issue for you this week. The Fool card certainly doesn’t mean you are one; quite the opposite in fact. He’s urging you to take risks and to have self-belief. That it doesn’t matter, follow your heart and believe in your intuition. There are no wrong moves; it’s your reaction to unfolding events that makes the difference. SAGITTARIUS - The Hanged Man Why sacrifice your time or energy for someone, or a project when to be honest, you don’t have the time or the inclination? If you cannot give it 100%, bail out early rather than disappoint others. A retreat or spa will do you the world of good, if only to replenish the energy you've expended in the past few weeks. CAPRICORN - Four of Swords Meditation, yoga, tai chi, chill music etc. are all good methods for helping you to unwind. This card advises you to take life easy; to withdraw from a recently hectic lifestyle; take stock of the past few months and plan for the next part of your journey. Be peaceful and balanced in all your dealings and gentle with all refusals. AQUARIUS - The Tower There is, somewhere in your life, a false ideal or belief that requires dismantling. This needs great courage on your part as it will have ramifications in all your relationships, work and play. If you don't begin this process, events can be taken out of your hands. The result will be the same, radical change. This is an amazing opportunity. PISCES - Five of Pentacles Help arrives when you most need it this week; especially if you have been struggling financially. Although investment or money-wise it's been scary; you've been shown heaps of love and affection by those you care about the most. Just remember, it's the tough times that help us tap into our strengths and most importantly, reveals who our true friends are.

She became an anchoress attached to the Church of St Julian in Norwich, and it was by this name that she came to be known to later generations. She died around the year 1417. Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel I’ve been reading again an extraordinary book which has the distinction of being the first book written by a woman in English. We don’t even know her name! But she has come to be known simply as Julian of Norwich. In the night of the 8th May 1373, when she was thirty years old and suffering from a terminal illness, and receiving the last rites, a woman of Norwich experienced a series of 15 visions – in Middle English “showings”. Each “showing” reveals aspects of the love of God. Following her miraculous recovery, she spent the

don’t agree that God sends suffering. Nevertheless, some of her “showings” are wonderful. How about this from chapter 5 of her book? “He shewed me a little thing, the quantity of an hazel-nut, in the palm of my hand; and it was as round as a ball. I looked thereupon with eye of my understanding, and thought: What may this be? And it was answered generally thus: It is all that is made. I marvelled how it might last, for methought it might suddenly have fallen to naught for littleness. And I was answered in my understanding: It

lasteth, and ever shall last for that God loveth it. And so All-thing hath the Being by the love of God. In this Little Thing I saw three properties. The first is that God made it, the second is that God loveth it, the third, that God keepeth it. But what is to me verily the Maker, the Keeper, and the Lover,—I cannot tell; for till I am substantially at one with Him, I may never have full rest nor very bliss: that is to say, till I be so fastened to Him, that there is right nought that is made betwixt my God and me.”

TELEVISION, SATELLITE & INTERNET SERVICES

H

owever much we may aspire to ‘live the dream’ under the Mediterranean sun, there are a few things from our native land that are commonly missed among the British & Irish community in Ibiza.

Internet Not so long ago, Ibiza had universally poor internet service, which in some areas offered little more than dial up modem connection speeds. Things are changing, and those parts of the Island covered by Fibre Optic enjoy

300mb speeds that exceed those back in Blighty—but there are still many areas of Ibiza that have very patchy service at best. Satellite and 4g internet reaches the parts fixed connections cannot, and though other services are available, that offered by Fusion has the added advantage of operating through a UK VPN, giving access to all UK location reliant services without any additional software or connection gizmos.

Television Our refusal to give up sports & soaps has meant UK Satellite TV has been available in Spain for many years, however all of Satellite Solutions, A.H. Satellite and Fusion, also offer a range of alternatives including IPTV running through your internet connection, and multi channel boxes that take your TV beyond our native shores to global services with the sports fan’s reassurance of ‘if it’s on, you can get it’.

Interview some live bands. But regardless of that, the energy is in the pool parties, the atmosphere is here. Last year was our most successful ever year, this year is selling better than last year and we've responded to give the 20-something customer that we're most interested in, give them a version of what we think they want, and deliver an upgraded experience in the way that they, you know, it's all about sharing and social media and imagery and this is responding to the energy that we, we're addicts, we're chasing the energy. That's what we're feeding off, and this provides it, so ...

 And you've made a few refurbishments this year to the space as well to accommodate the new ...

Yeah, I think the change is probably more dramatic than the original change when we dropped the stage in, because this is the first year that we've truly gone from hotel courtyard to venue. So we're now a proper working venue and we're running more events than we've ever run and I'm sure that the number of events will only increase, and the hours ... we can't run past 11pm now. If you want to run past 11pm now you have to run quieter. So it doesn’t make sense, everything leans towards the daytime, the daytime is the biggest growth area on the island and why wouldn't we want to be, why wouldn’t we want to be in that market. It’s also far more profitable.

Ibiza Rocks Andy Mackay  Claire B  I’m interested about the changes. Ibiza Rocks has gone from live music to having daytime pool parties. Can you tell me why?

We are chasing energy, we’ve been doing it for the 20 odd years, 25 years that I've been in this game and we've been about chasing the energy, following where the energy, where the atmosphere is. We have these values of attitude, atmosphere and authenticity - they are our triple A values. We chase energy for a living and in the case of the Ibiza Rocks Hotel we are fully committed to being a 20somethings youth hotel. So they're our core values right, and we’re saying that that's who we are. We also launched ourselves as being all about guitar bands and live music. Now there comes a point where, you know, like I said when I was in my teens and early 20s I was going to bands and I was loving it. I was lucky enough to get the opportunity in 2005, 2003, 4, 5 when we launched Ibiza Rocks to book a load of bands and be at the crest of the wave of, you know, Babyshambles, Kaiser Chiefs, Artic Monkeys, Kasabian - it was amazing. We had this amazing run and I could do something that appealed to me personally because it reminded me of a time when I was, you know, I think we all adapt to what happened in our teens and 20s. It appealed massively to the audience that we launched Ibiza Rocks to in 2005. And it was amazing, an

have a night time live music business that is impossible to be legal that isn't where the revenue is coming from and the jealousy of the very success that we were having in the day time, which was legal, was possibly going to get killed by the non-profitable vanity project that I was carrying out with the live bands that I liked.

 So can you tell me a bit more about this legal/ illegal thing and the issues with the Ayuntamiento in San Antonio.

There's quite a lot of stuff happening at the moment. There's a big thing with Sant José. It is virtually impossible for a visiting musician to perform legally on the island of Ibiza.

 Because of the sound? Because of the acoustic plan that is a requirement of any venue on the island. They have to submit an acoustic study, they have to define where every single speaker is, it has to be fed through a limiter and all the speakers have to be in the exact position and be the exact make and model and serial number that is in the acoustic plan. Which means that if you’re a band that is perhaps traveling with your Marshall amp, or you've got external speakers that you put on stage, you're immediately in breach of your license.

 Is that just in San Antonio or is it island wide?

Island wide. Balearic wide and possibly beyond. So nobody can be legal, unless maybe you've got the same band every day and you use all the equipment I'm not negative about where San Antonio is in the exact same position, but it costs three or four thousand euros to do the acoustic study going, I’m very positive about it and I think and you can't turn it round in a day.

its going to have a healthy, good future”.

amazing run. Now fast forward to 2017, 2018, the customer that is staying in our hotel is not excited about the same music that the customer was in 2005, 2006, 2007, their musical taste has evolved, as it should do and that's happened absolutely, and you know, grime is a million miles away from the Artic Monkeys, and you know, we got huge success with Stormzy and … So what we've realised is that you have to be true. You have to stick to certain values and you have to be true to them. And if we are going to be true to the generation of 20-somethings, if we're going to be true to our philosophy of chasing the energy and if we're going to stick to our values of attitude, atmosphere and authenticity of what we are delivering, we have to deliver the soundtrack and the music and the event, that audience wants. And when we came out with Craig David two years ago, it was very clear to me that the energy that we had been experiencing in the live gig was more present in that Craig David event than it was in some of the latterday live music concerts, you know, the energy. It's not about me as a 47 year old man, that's about the energy. So that, combined with the fact that there were some political issues where putting the speakers that the bands needed, the monitors, the speakers, it was impossible, it was an impossibility to be legal, so that accelerated the process because we had a daytime party business that was starting to get very very successful last year. It was where all the revenue was coming from and we

 When did that happen, when did that come in?

A few years ago, three or four years ago, I can't remember exactly, but it's been around for a few years.

 But when you started it wasn't in place. No. So that meant that whilst we did live music we were always vulnerable to someone who wanted to give us a problem. By stopping doing the live bands, we are no longer vulnerable. The success of the pool parties came with a dose of jealousy and that jealousy meant that we were vulnerable, and the problem, although I don't think the jealousy was about the bands, the easiest way to cause us a problem was to attack us for not complying with the acoustic plan. So that's really what, that was the straw that made us ultimately decide that we had to, for the moment, stop doing the live bands, because we can't afford to risk the entire license of the building on an activity that we cannot legalise and that does not make money.

 You said there “for the moment”. So do you think maybe if things change if they get a bit more relaxed and the market changes ...

I'm sure that, things have to change because you can't have laws long term that criminalise live music, which is basically where we are at. We're at a situation where I don't know how it's possible for a traveling musician to legally perform anywhere on the island, anywhere, indoors or outdoors. It's not just an outdoor issue. It's just a ludicrous situation so, in time that must be solved, and when that is solved, then we will be able to come back and put in a mix of

 So how do you see, I know you've spoken before

about San Antonio as a tourist destination and a lot of the changes and restrictions that have been put in in San An, how do you see the future of tourism in San Antonio, because you’re part of that aren’t you?

I’m fairly positive about it, I mean, I think the future of San Antonio is the future of the island and I think that San Antonio has its place and it needs to be healthy. It's certainly becoming the daytime capital of the island and I think that’s not going to change, so the pre-midnight daytime, whether that be sunset at Café del Mar, or Mambo or Ocean Beach, or us, or Benimusa Zoo Project, daytime activity is huge in San Antonio. The after midnight activity, I’m very hopeful that you'll see a reinvigorated Eden and Es Paradis, you know, some of the problems in the West End may drive more people to those clubs, but it's, I passionately believe that 20somethings are a massively important asset to the ecosystem of the island. And I think that San Antonio has been placed to provide that market. I am not cynical about that. I think that's THE most valuable market that comes to this island and I think there's a lot of criticism about that age group, but I do think that all the success that the island is currently enjoying is driven because the people that are filling all the boats and the VIPs in the main, these are people that fell in love with the island in their 20s, so if we don’t give people the opportunity to fall in love with Ibiza in their 20s, they’ll fall in love with somewhere else in their 20s, and they won't be here in their 30s and 40s and 50s and whatever. So my whole attitude is not, it's not about stopping youth, it's about keeping them coming for the life cycle and maybe San Antonio needs to take its fairer share of people that started their life in San Antonio, so you’ve caught them but then you let them leave and go somewhere else and my question would be how does San Antonio keep its fair share of the people that they helped to fall in love with the island? And a solution to that is not sopping the 20-somethings, the solution is working harder to get them to come back in their later 20s with their girlfriends, in their early 30s with their wives and young families, and the life cycle of that person, how can San Antonio deliver a more balanced experience of that? That’s the question.

 And do you think San Antonio is starting to offer that more balanced …?

Yeah, I do. I'm not saying that every decision is correct but I do think that that is the direction of travel and I do think that the zone of San Antonio offers a lot already. And I do think that enforced change or any change provokes, there’s a good way to react and a bad way to react, and I think there are opportunities from everything, whether it's good or bad and I think San Antonio is in a really healthy place. Don't get me wrong I do believe that it's important that political mistakes aren’t made that damage the prospects of the ecosystem of the island, but I'm not negative about where San Antonio is going, I’m very positive about it and I think its going to have a healthy, good future.

 Yeah, that’s why I wanted to ask you about it. Thank you.

Postcript: As the interview finishes, we’re aware that in the background the DJ is whipping up the packed venue and Andy checks the decibel metre that he has on his phone, as he is concerned that they might be breaching the imposed sound limit. To his relief he discovers that they are ridiculously legal at that moment in time and he laughs. It’s not funny really, but this is the reality within which the venue now has to operate!

Rocks Opening Claire B Ibiza Rocks held its opening pool parties on June 1 and 2, with some of this years residents coming together for one huge opening party weekend. The winter refurbishments were unveiled for the first time. In the heart of the venue now is a 360-degree ‘island’ for the DJs in the middle of the poolside courtyard – as well as doing their thing behind the decks, they can now also venture out onto the circular runway around them and interact with the crowd should they want to. The VIP areas have been extended to cope with demand – a raised platform along one side has artificial grass, circular beds and lots of sofas. Across the other side, the balcony has had the roof removed to let the sunshine in and has lots of high tables and stools along the edge for that birds eye view of the stage and the venue and artificial grass-covered raised platforms with sofas at the back. The pool is now central to the action and the inflatable unicorns and swans were in demand as people cooled down, danced and made full use of the pool. There’s a BBQ area selling food and plenty of bars selling alcoholic, soft drinks, cocktails and ice pops to keep everybody fed and watered.

the talking. Featuring weekly special guests The So Solid Crew. Photo back page Rinco Soeman. Photo this page Dwayne Nolan.

On Friday, DJs Patrick Nazemi, Oneman, Octavian, Cuckoo Land’s Sonny Fodera and Rudimental entertained the packed venue. Hats off to Rudimental boys Leon ‘DJ Locksmith’ Rolle and trumpet player Mark Crown for injecting that special Rudimental energy into the place that they’re so good at doing. They were clearly enjoying themselves as Leon spun the tunes, MC’d, jumped around and whipped up the crowd. Mark’s trumpet sounded great as it wafted out around the venue accompanying some of the tracks and provided something a bit different. They played quite a few of their own tracks as well as other crowd pleasers, most notably House of Pain’s ‘Jump Around’ as Leon setting the example had everyone jumping, and

Gala’s ‘Freed From Desire’, which had everyone singing along. Vodka was handed around and champagne was sprayed into the audience. Those boys know how to get a party going and their enthusiasm to the cause is infectious. Their Rudimental & Friends residencies are on Thursdays from July 5-August 30 and they’re sure to be good if Friday’s performance was anything to go by. I interviewed Leon about their plans and this will be coming soon on these pages.

Day 2

On Saturday, the big draw was Craig David returning to the venue with his TS5 Pool Party. Also on the decks were Danny Beck, Kojo Funds, DJ Q, with Amy Becker ending the day. From the moment that Craig David took to the stage and fired up his first track ‘Rewind’, he had the crowd in the palm of his hand, as he MC’d and sang and to backing tracks of his songs. They loved him and reached out to shake hands with him, take selfies and record what they were witnessing. And of course they were singing along with him – they knew all the songs and all the words. And Craig was lapping it all up and loving every second. It’s quite a spectacle to witness. Craig David’s TS5 Pool Party returns on Tuesdays from July 10 for 12 weeks to September 25 and if you’re a fan of his, you need to go and see him. There’ll be an interview with him coming in the paper in a few weeks time, so watch this space.
