n this fifth edition, we, the Border Heritage Magazine team, wish to share a time described in three words: Splendid, Fabulous and, at the same time, “Fresco”.

In this edition, we also included a prominent character; a delightful chat with one of the most recognized artists in the state of Yucatan: Conchi Leon, a mestiza power. We recommend to meet a unique project in the world such as the US-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership, which provides opportunities for young people and fosters economic sustainability. We want to offer this tour to any reader who decides to join us and enjoy the beautiful images available on our pages, at this season where we can savor the company of our loved ones within the beautiful sunsets only seen in northern Mexico and southern United States. I invite you to enjoy and share this edition and our website www.border-heritage.com. We are sure you will enjoy it.

icen por ahí que no hay quinto malo; y es esta quinta edición por la que pasamos. El equipo de Border Heritage Magazine deseamos compartir un tiempo que se describe con tres palabras: Flamante, Fabuloso y, al mismo tiempo, Fresco. Un tiempo fabuloso, lleno de color por sus flores, los tonos en el vestir o en las calles. Flamante por el clima que vivimos, pero también por su calor humano y por la convivencia al aire libre, bajo el sol o las estrellas. Además, fresco por el aire del atardecer, el cual nos muestra la presencia de nuestro vecino: el desierto, y me recuerda cómo, hace varios años, se sentaban a platicar las personas en la entrada de sus casas “con el fresco de la tarde”, característico de estos meses. Esta herencia, aunque no continúa, está en mi corazón junto con el recuerdo de mi familia reunida cada tarde de verano. En esta temporada somos libres para expresar una faceta alegre y de buscar momentos para divertirnos disfrutando de la naturaleza; por eso hemos preparado una visita por uno de los mejores lugares con los que cuenta un suburbio del oeste de Texas: Balmorhea, donde uno se recrea y descansa en aguas naturales, rodeado de peces y aves para descubrir. Al mismo tiempo, compartimos el evento de polo en el rancho Santa Maria, donde fuimos invitados y nos recibió una de las empresarias más sobresalientes en El Paso, Texas: Elizabeth SinClair. Vale la pena vivir el gran ambiente de este elegante deporte. Además, platicamos con otra mujer connotada porque ha dado paso a la apertura educativa con lo que es ahora Southwest University, caminos y oportunidades para muchos jóvenes emprendedores. Conozca uno de los eventos nocturnos más llamativos, en uno de los sitios históricos más importantes de México: Teotihuacán. Además de ser un lugar obligado por su importancia, el espectáculo que, varias noches a la semana, ofrece ‘el lugar donde los hombres se convertían en dioses’ es una experiencia inolvidable. Gustosos de haber visitado y conocido el Instituto Lidia Patterson, que ha trabajado en la comunidad por más de 100 años, brindando el primer modelo educativo en inglés en esta frontera para alumnos de secundaria y preparatoria. Y qué decir del espectacular vuelo de la mariposa monarca, un impresionante viaje que abarca los países del norte del continente americano. Esperamos que las imágenes revelen un poco de la belleza escondida en nuestro territorio. Contamos también, en esta edición, con un personaje de altura: una deliciosa charla con una de las artistas más reconocidas en el estado de Yucatán: Conchi Leon, una mestiza power. Le recomendamos conocer un proyecto único en el mundo como lo es la Alianza Fronteriza de Filantropía México-Estados Unidos, quien brinda oportunidades para jóvenes y fomenta la sustentabilidad económica. It is a fabulous time due to its many colorful flowers, unique shades in clothing or in the streets. Splendid, by the climate we live in, but also for its people’s warmth enjoying the outdoors under the sun or stars. Also, “fresco” for its evening breeze showing us the presence of our neighbor: the desert, reminding me how, several years ago, people used to sit and chat in their porches “con el fresco de la tarde” typical of these summer months. This heritage, although it hasn’t continued in the community, remains in my heart along with the memory of my family gathered each summer evening. In this season, we feel free to express a cheerful side and explore a fun time enjoying nature. Therefore, we have prepared a visit to one of the best places in a suburb of west Texas: Balmorhea, great amusement site to relax in natural waters, surrounded by fish and birds to discover. At the same time, we share the polo event at the Santa Maria ranch, where we were invited. It’s definitely worth living the great vibe of this elegant sport. In addition, we were hosted by one of the most outstanding business people in El Paso, Texas, for an award she has achieved: Mrs. Yolanda Arriola, a woman who has brought the educational opening to what is now Southwest University, which translates into options and opportunities for many young entrepreneurs. Moreover, meet one of the most striking evening events, of the most important historical sites in Mexico: Teotihuacan. Besides being a place bound by its importance, the show can be seen several nights a week and offers ‘the place where men became gods’ as an unforgettable experience. Gladly, we visited the Lydia Patterson Institute, which has worked for the community for over 100 years, providing the first English educational model in this border for middle and high school students. And what about the spectacular flight of the monarch butterfly, an impressive journey encompassing North America. We hope that the images reveal some of the hidden beauty in our territory.

En la comunidad del Rosario, en el Estado de Michoacán, México, se encuentra un hermoso lugar: el “Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca”.

ature provides amazing spectacles: we recreate ourselves through waterfalls, exotic plants, fantastic animals... but one extraordinary case is the multigenerational migration of the monarch butterfly, a tiny creature who travels a titanic journey.

a naturaleza nos brinda espectáculos asombrosos: nos recreamos con sus cascadas, plantas exóticas, animales fabulosos… pero un caso muy especial es la migración multigeneracional de la mariposa monarca, pequeña criatura que realiza una travesía titánica. Las monarcas tienen un ciclo anual: parten del norte de Canadá, pasan por el territorio de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica y llegan a la República Mexicana para terminar su vuelo en las sierras del Estado de México o de Michoacán. Alcanzan su destino cubriendo una trayectoria de más de 3,200 kilómetros en un tiempo récord, para de ahí regresar otra vez: se les considera la súper especie.

The monarch butterflies have an annual cycle: they start in northern Canada, go all across the United States and complete their flight in the mountains of Estado de Mexico or Michoacan. They reach their destination completing more than 1,988 miles in record time to return from there again; they are considered super species.

La mariposa monarca (Danaus Plexippus) tiene cabeza y tórax de color negro con manchas blancas. Todos hemos visto sus hermosas alas de color naranja rojizo brillante, también manchadas de blanco en los márgenes, que abiertas miden, en promedio, 11 centímetros (4.33 pulgadas). El peso de este insecto no rebaza un gramo (0.035 onzas). La fragilidad de la mariposa monarca no limita su gran capacidad para volar distancias enormes. El sistema de navegación que utiliza es parte de su cuerpo: la genética es relevante cuando transita por lugares desconocidos para ella, pero no para sus tatarabuelos, quienes pasaron por ahí. Algunos elementos de la naturaleza como viento, agua y tierra son claves para brindarle detalles sobre el contexto

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) has a black head and thorax with white spots. We’ve all seen its beautiful bright reddish-orange color wings, also stained with white on its edge, measuring, on average, 4.33 inches when opened. The weight of this insect doesn’t go above 0.035 ounces. The fragility of the monarch butterflies does not limit their outstanding capacity to fly long distances. The navigation system they use is part of their body: genetics are relevant when the places they transit are unknown to them, but not for their great grandparents, who already flew that terrirory.

Some nature elements like wind, water and earth are keys to provide details about the context; the moon, sun and stars also inform them about weather conditions and flight routes. In addition, the geographical and magnetic norths help them to lead the course. These small beings make the most of their information receptors: antennae and wings.

The importance of the Sanctuary In the community of Rosario, near the magical village of Angangueo in Michoacan State, Mexico, there is a beautiful place known as the ‘Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary’; it’s the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a natural area protected by the Mexican government. This insect comes all the way here to carry out its hibernation and reproduction activity in these cool wet Michoacan lands. In the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, there is a great diversity of flora and fauna, many of them endemic (exclusive of the place). Also known for the thousands of monarchs who remain at this site until the beginning of spring, when they take the flight to return to Canada. For three weeks, they traverse 500 miles south of the country, where more than two hundred carried eggs per female are deposited, one by one, on asclepias (milkweed plants). The larva takes four days to clear: it first eats its shell and then the milkweed leaf, which has toxic substance; with

En la comunidad del Rosario, muy cerca del pueblo mágico de Angangueo, en el Estado de Michoacán, México, se encuentra un hermoso lugar conocido como el ‘Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca’. Es la Reserva de la Biósfera Mariposa Monarca, área natural protegida por el gobierno mexicano. Hasta acá llega este insecto para llevar a cabo su actividad de hibernación y reproducción en estas frescas y húmedas tierras de la sierra michoacana. En la Reserva de la Biósfera Mariposa Monarca existe una gran diversidad de especies de flora y fauna silvestres, muchas de ellas endémicas (exclusivas del lugar). Destaca también por las miles de monarcas que permanecen en este sitio hasta el inicio de la primavera, cuando emprenden el vuelo para retornar a los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. Durante tres semanas, ellas recorren 805 kilómetros al sur de ese país, donde los más de doscientos huevecillos cargados por cada hembra son depositados, uno por uno, en las plantas de las asclepias. La larva tarda cuatro días en salir: se come primero su

envoltorio y después la hoja de la asclepia, la cual tiene sustancia tóxica; gracias a ésta, el insecto adquiere también la toxicidad que lo defiende contra los depredadores. Durante poco más de dos semanas, ella completa su masa corporal para llegar a ser una oruga. La seda la cobija y le brinda el refugio necesario donde se llevará cabo la magia: le comienzan a brotar alas, antenas, patas… en pocas horas, ya metamorfoseada en mariposa, está lista para volar. Se requieren tres generaciones de monarcas para llegar hasta Canadá. En septiembre, desde Norteamérica, las mariposas regresan a México. Aprovechan las corrientes de aire para aligerar su vuelo y van veloces para evitar las primeras heladas, tan peligrosas para ellas. Por si fuera poco, durante los siguientes dos meses recorren más de 900 horas de vuelo, para ir llegando, a partir de los primeros días de octubre, a su refugio invernal en los bosques mexicanos, donde se posan en los mismos oyameles que ocuparon sus tatarabuelos.

The silk provides the necessary shelter to the larvae where magic will take place: wings, antennae, and legs begin to sprout ... in a few hours, already metamorphosed into a butterfly, is ready to fly. Three generations of monarchs are required to reach Canada. In September, the butterflies return to Mexico from North America. They take advantage of air currents to lighten their flight and go faster to avoid the upcoming winter, which becomes so dangerous for them. As if that wasn’t enough, during the next two months they travel more than 900 hours, from the first days of October, to their winter refuge in the Mexican forests on the same oyamel fir trees where their great-great-grandfathers landed in past generations. Contemplar este espectáculo impresionante es posible, si se visita el Santuario. Para mayor comodidad de los asistentes, existe la renta de caballos acompañados por guardabosques. Otra forma de llegar es subir una pendiente con escaleras de piedra que facilitan el ascenso. Se puede desayunar y comer en la explanada donde están colocados puestos construidos con madera por los lugareños, quienes cocinan sabrosos platillos michoacanos. Calientan sus anafres con leña, dándole un sabor especial a la comida. No olvides llevar una pequeña planta de pino o de oyamel que te ofrecen en el vivero del Santuario, para que contribuyas a reforestar y conservar a la mariposa monarca. El camino hacia los lugares donde descansan las mariposas es un recorrido sensorial inolvidable: el paisaje de los valles y montes es muy bello; se aprecian los sonidos de la naturaleza —debemos hablar en voz muy baja para no perturbar la paz de estos insectos, además de caminar cuidando no pisarlos—; podemos sentir las corrientes de aire y colocarnos en ellas, mientras observamos a esos seres de apariencia floral pasar junto a nosotros y, ocasionalmente, percibir cómo se posan en nuestro cuerpo acompañándonos un instante.

If one visits the Sanctuary, contemplating this impressive show is possible. For the attendees convenience, one can rent horses accompanied by rangers. Another way to get there is by climbing a slope with stone stairs that facilitates the rise. One can have a tasty breakfast at the plaza where wooden stalls, built by locals, are placed. They heat their anafres (clay pot) with wood, giving them a special flavor to the food. It’s important to bring a small pine or oyamel plant that is offered at the sanctuary’s nursery, to contribute to reforest and conserve the monarch butterfly. The road to the places where the butterflies rest is an unforgettable sensory journey: the landscape of valleys and mountains is remarkably beautiful; we can contemplate nature’s sounds –we must speak very softly to not disturb the peace of these insects, besides walking carefully to prevent stepping our feet on them-; we can feel the air currents and follow them, as we watch these beings of floral appearance passing next to us and, occasionally, perceive how they momentarily perch on our body. Queens of the Wind This migratory butterfly walks the longest distances compared to any other insects species in the world. Besides being part of the food chain, its function is to pollinate a wide variety of flowering plants species.

Las reinas del viento Esta mariposa migratoria es la que recorre las mayores distancias, en comparación con cualquier otra especie de insectos en el mundo. Su función, además de formar parte de las cadenas alimenticias, es polinizar una gran diversidad de especies de plantas con flor. La monarca es considerada una especie cosmopolita por su presencia en muchos lugares del mundo, pero solamente en Norteamérica tiene lugar este fabuloso evento de migración e hibernación. La mariposa monarca es una gran fuente de enseñanza: la fragilidad del cuerpo no limita la aventura de soñar y volar. La naturaleza humana nos impide hacerlo de manera autónoma, pero hemos desarrollado la tecnología para trasladarnos grandes distancias. Por otra parte, la vida está llena de retos que podemos afrontar organizando a toda la comunidad. Además, también en nuestra genética están presentes los sueños y las enseñanzas de nuestros tatarabuelos: debemos tenerlos en cuenta porque pueden ayudarnos a alcanzar la felicidad.

Monarchs are considered cosmopolitan species by their presence in many parts of the world, but this fabulous migration and hibernation event takes place only in North America. The monarch butterfly is a great source of education: the fragility of our bodies does not limit the adventure of dreaming and flying. Human nature prevents us from doing it independently, but we have developed the technology to travel large distances. Life is full of challenges that we face organizing the whole community. In addition, in our genetics, the dreams and teachings of our great grandparents are present: we must take them into account to help us reach happiness.

It’s an unforgettable sensory journey: with an extraordinary landscape between the sounds of nature, we contemplate these beings of floral appearance momentarily caressing and perching on our bodies. 17

he opportunity to visit the Archeological Site of Teotihuacan and enjoy the sound and light show called “Experiencia Nocturna” is unique. The Ministry of Tourism, and organizer of this event, began functions on March 25 of this year. The program consists of a 500 meters circuit in the northern part of the Calzada de los Muertos: it begins in front of the Pyramid of the Sun reaching all the way to the Pyramid of the Moon, and from there it returns to the starting point. The fascinated spectators, seated at one of the steps, enjoyed the majestic audiovisual show. Thanks to the invitation made by the Ministry of Culture of the State Government of Mexico, we had a tour with a panoramic view that one rarely gets to enjoy: walking the northern stretch between the two great pyramids under a full moon hiding and revealing itself through the clouds, while contemplating the practically empty road, without the crowds that visit every week such an important archaeological site. Thus, in this scenario using available audio guide at the entrance, we stopped in each of the ten stations on the route to hear the information from the sites of interest related to relevant dates and events of the archaeological site. For this show, it is “bathed” with seven luminous environments bringing an atmosphere full of color, contrasting with the stillness of the night. I’m not the type of person who dresses in white to go to recharge energy on the pyramids, but I must admit that, between that silence and darkness, the stone colossi impressed me.

La Secretaría de Turismo, organizadora de este evento, inició las funciones el 25 de marzo de este año. El programa consta de un circuito en la parte norte de la Calzada de los Muertos, de aproximadamente 500 metros: comienza frente a la Pirámide del Sol y llega hasta la Pirámide de la Luna, para de ahí regresar al punto inicial. Los espectadores, sentados en una de las escalinatas, disfrutamos del espectáculo audiovisual. Gracias a la invitación que nos hizo la Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno del Estado de México, tuvimos un recorrido con una panorámica que pocas veces se logra disfrutar: caminar el tramo norte entre las dos grandes pirámides bajo una luna llena que el paso de las nubes iba ocultando y descubriendo, mientras apreciábamos la calzada casi vacía, sin las multitudes que visitan cada semana tan importante zona arqueológica. Así, en este escenario y con ayuda de la audioguía disponible en la entrada, nos deteníamos en cada una de las diez estaciones de la ruta para escuchar la información de los sitios de interés relacionados con fechas y sucesos relevantes del conjunto arqueológico, el cual, para este espectáculo, es “bañado” con siete ambientes luminosos que le dan una atmósfera llena de color, contrastante con la quietud de la noche. No soy de los que me visto de blanco para ir a recargarme de energía a las pirámides, pero debo reconocer que así, entre el silencio y la oscuridad, los

In this archaeological site, located 40 minutes from Mexico City, an unforgettable audiovisual spectacle can be contemplated.

Besides, I remembered the legend of the Fifth Sun that was taught to me, my fellow classmates looked like uniformed ants while climbing the pyramid of the sun, when children were still allowed to climb up to the top. I also thought about that photo where Jim Morrison, the Lizard King, touches the jaws of the Feathered Serpent. Then my mind jumped in time: I figured those men who defied the heights placing each construction piece in its place. After the route, we came back to the starting point and prepared for the big show that is based on a technique called video mapping, which uses one of the faces of the Pyramid of the Sun as a large screen, allowing the reflection of high-resolution pictures without affecting its structure. The 32-minute video tells the story of Teotihuacan and the civilization that managed to build such an important city. The images, together with the audio guide, took us to the beginnings of the settlement with the arrival of the first settlers coming from the Valley of Mexico. Cultural and economic development that led them to form one of the most populated cities of antiquity and which subsequently the Mexicas would praise with processions and visits. The settlers who named it “City of the Gods” According to their perspective, such a beautiful city could only have been built by divine beings. Projected images form a colorful mosaic that delineates the pyramid using shapes and objects characteristic Teotihuacan. Suplemented with drawings and images, the mosiac takes us to the glorious past and the mysterious decline of this civilization. Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays are the days when you can attend this spectacle in one of the most important sites in Mexico. Anyone seeking fun and a genuine aesthetic and cultural experience, shouldn’t miss visiting the old gods in a delightful moon night.

Luego mi mente saltó en el tiempo: imaginé a esos hombres que desafiaron las alturas para colocar cada pieza de la construcción en su lugar. Después de la ruta, regresamos al punto de partida y nos preparamos para el gran espectáculo que está basado en una técnica llamada video mapping y aprovecha uno de los paramentos de la Pirámide del Sol como una gran pantalla, permitiendo reflejar cuadros de alta resolución sin afectar su estructura. El video de 32 minutos narra la historia de Teotihuacán y la civilización que logró edificar tan importante ciudad. Las imágenes, acompañadas por la audioguía, nos llevaron a los inicios del asentamiento con la llegada de los primeros pobladores provenientes del Valle de México, pasando por el desarrollo cultural y económico que los llevó a conformar una de las ciudades más habitadas de la antigüedad y que posteriormente los mexicas alabarían con procesiones y visitas. Fueron ellos quienes la denominaron “Ciudad de los Dioses”, pues en su opinión una ciudad tan bella solamente pudo haber sido erigida por seres divinos. Las imágenes proyectadas conforman un mosaico colorido que delinea la pirámide utilizando formas y objetos característicos de los teotihuacanos, complementado con planos e imágenes que nos remontaron al esplendoroso pasado y a la misteriosa decadencia de esta cultura. Viernes, sábados y lunes son los días en que es posible asistir a este espectáculo en uno de los sitios más importantes de México. Quien busque diversión y una experiencia estética y cultural diferente, no puede dejar de visitar a los antiguos dioses en una noche de luna.

Conchi Leon: A Mestiza Power Mestiza Power is the pinnacle of the Yucatecan dramatist recognized nationally and internationally. Mestiza Power es la obra cumbre de la dramaturga yucateca reconocida a nivel nacional e internacional.

I’m a dreamer who has channeled her dreams, anxieties, absences and nostalgia in the theater... I am Dona Zenobia’s daughter and I’m a writer, rather than an actress or director” This is how Yucatecan dramatist Conchi Leon defines herself, who has participated in about 70 productions and has been nationally and internationally recognized. Conchi Leon, whom I confess being her fan for many years, welcomed us at her home in a family atmosphere, resembling very much Merida, to discuss her work. Dressed in traditional clothing from her home state, this spokeswoman for Yucatecan traditions showed how proud she is of her origins. Her specialty has been to represent the Yucatecan mestiza and customs of the Mayan community; this is why her masterpiece, entitled Mestiza Power, is achieving 10 years of being interpreted in different stages of the world. “I find extraordinary beauty in the corporeality of the mestiza. My grandmother was one of them; she had all consciousness of myths, rites and traditions. Her absence led me to search for her in the mestizas, whom I consider my muses. No one should make fun of this.”

Smiling and remembering good times, the playwright told us about her stories that are nothing more than a reflection of what she sees or lives on the street. Playing the Yucatecan mestiza has become a mission for her, a commitment to comply in most of her works; but also, she takes opportunities to perform other genres. Her most recent play is Del Manantial del Corazon, where she addressed the Mayan women’s motherhood and the importance of the midwife. As for her life experience, she highlighted the Cachorro de Leon monologue, which fictionalized her relationship with a violent father. Here she paused and confessed, with a slightly serious expression but reflecting a quiet wisdom: “That work I did it to heal myself.” Her career extends beyond the theater. As an actress, she has participated in different shortfilms - for example, in Anima Sola - and in the Yucatecan web series Carwash. However, she mentions that audiovisual productions are more exhausting: “We depend on the camera, the audio and our peers; on the other hand, the times at the theater are more controlled.” For her, stories in Yucatan never end. Currently,

Así se define la dramaturga yucateca Conchi León, quien ha participado en aproximadamente 70 montajes y ha sido reconocida nacional e internacionalmente. Conchi León, de quien me considero admirador desde hace muchos años, nos recibió en su casa, en un ambiente familiar muy al estilo de los meridanos, para platicar sobre su trabajo. Vestida con ropa típica de su estado natal, esta vocera de las tradiciones yucatecas se mostraba orgullosa de sus orígenes.

Su especialidad ha sido representar a la mestiza yucateca y las costumbres de la comunidad maya; por eso su obra cumbre, titulada Mestiza Power, está cumpliendo 10 años de ser interpretada en diferentes escenarios del mundo. “Encuentro una belleza extraordinaria en la corporalidad de la mestiza. Mi abuela era una; ella tenía toda la conciencia de mitos, ritos y tradiciones. Su ausencia me llevó a buscarla en las mestizas, a quienes considero mis musas y de esto no debería mofarse nadie”. Sonriente, recordando buenos momentos, la dramaturga nos platicó que sus historias no son más que el reflejo de lo que observa en la calle o de lo que vive. Interpretar a la mestiza yucateca se ha convertido para ella en una misión, un compromiso que cumple en la mayoría de sus obras; aunque también se da oportunidad de abarcar otros géneros. Su obra más reciente es Del manantial del corazón, donde abordó la maternidad de la mujer maya y la importancia de la comadrona. En cuanto a su experiencia de vida, destacó el monólogo Cachorro de león, que ficcionaliza su relación con un padre violento. Aquí hizo una pausa y nos confesó, con un rostro un poco más serio pero reflejando una sabiduría tranquila: “Esa obra la hice para curarme”. Como embajadora de Yucatán, su trabajo ha sido admirable y ha rebasado fronteras, pues ha representado con gran dignidad a la mujer yucateca en los lugares donde ha sido invitada: varios estados de la República y países entre los cuales están Estados Unidos, Colombia, Perú, España y Alemania. Algunos de sus textos se han traducido a varios idiomas. Con esta perspectiva en mente, ella explica: “Decidí separar lo regional para Yucatán y tener otra mirada afuera. Me considero más yucateca que mexicana, pero a nivel país se ha proyectado más mi trabajo que en el estado”. Su carrera se extiende más allá del teatro. Como actriz ha participado en cortometrajes — por ejemplo, Ánima sola— y en la serie web yucateca Carwash. Sin embargo, menciona que las producciones audiovisuales son más cansadas: “Dependemos de la cámara, del audio y de los compañeros; los tiempos del teatro, en cambio, están más controlados”. Para ella, las historias en Yucatán nunca se terminan.

among other projects, she’s working on a staging about henequen, both from the perspective of farmers and the so-called “casta divina” or ‘divine caste’. With a twinkle in her eye, she says: “My dream is to be an announcer and I’m planning, with my partner Andrea Herrera, a social service radio program linked to several institutions. Of course, both would develop our mestizo characters in the project.”

Actualmente, entre otros proyectos, está trabajando en una puesta en escena sobre el henequén, tanto desde la perspectiva de los campesinos como de la llamada ‘casta divina’. Con un brillo en la mirada, expresa: “Mi sueño es ser locutora y estoy planeando, con mi compañera de escena Andrea Herrera, un programa de radio de servicio social vinculado a varias instituciones. Ambas desarrollaríamos en él nuestros personajes de mestizas, por supuesto.” “Yo siempre escribo de lo que no entiendo, como la violencia doméstica; por eso, busco una respuesta colectiva del público. Quizá juntos podamos entender por qué este problema es tan cotidiano. En mis historias la violencia no tiene perdón. Quiero mostrar a la gente esos universos cuya existencia no imagina y hacerla pensar en qué hace al respecto, en que si ve una injusticia, debe hacer algo”, concluye.

“I always write what I don’t understand, such as domestic violence; therefore, I seek a survey response from the public. Maybe together we could understand why this problem is so common. In my stories, violence is unforgivable. I want to show people these universes whose existence is unimaginable and make them think what’s done about it; that if you see an injustice, you must do something,” she concludes.

Así nos despedimos de esta gran actriz, cuya fortaleza de carácter le permite manifestarse en un trato dulce y agradable. Pasamos una tarde entretenida por la excelente charla y amistad de una mujer que es un ejemplo de tenacidad y trabajo incansable en pro de las raíces y las tradiciones de Yucatán y de la cultura mexicana en general.

Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to this great actress, whose personality’s strength allows her to manifest herself in a sweet and pleasant manner. We spent an entertaining evening thanks to the excellent conversation and friendship of a woman who is an example of tenacity and tireless work towards the roots and traditions of Yucatan and Mexican culture.

It’s a charming destination, ideal to relax thanks to the silence of the desert, but also to the water sound flowing down from the springs. Just three hours from El Paso, Texas, on Exit 192 from Interstate 10, we can find Balmorhea, a wonderful oasis nestled between the desert plains in the west, near the Davis Mountains. Its original inhabitants were the Mescalero Apaches. However, some landlords founded the city in 1906.

San Solomon aquifers supply 26 million gallons of water per day for farmers in the area. This is stored in the Balmorhea Lake, a reservoir of 600 acres, ideal for fishing and bird watching. As if that were not enough, we may see other animals or insects attracted to water, lush plants or shelter: whitetail deer, wild boar, squirrels, lizards, dragonflies, and many more. For example, birders can enjoy the summer with colorful songbirds, and in the coldest months, with aquatic 41

alking about Polo is to talk about adrenaline, about emotion; it’s to talk about one of the fastest sports, although some say it’s one of the most dangerous because falling or bumping to another horse is one of its features, not to mention the balls or rods used in the game.

Polo is a sport with a great tradition, where horse and rider become one. It is estimated that the first games were played in Persia over 2500 years ago. It is believed that was created by rival tribes of Central Asia and then, it was adopted in Europe as a training method for the King’s cavalry. Later, in America, became fashionable because of its class, elegance and distinction: guests enjoy a fine dining and the best wines of the region at the events. For this reason it’s known as “the game of kings.” Thus, the highly anticipated event for all El Pasoans is undoubtedly the 2016 Polo Real, which took place at the Santa Maria ranch, in the county of Anthony, Texas, just minutes from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Important personalities of the region came to this meeting, as well as special guests including sculptor Sebastian. We all enjoyed this attractive game, plus the food and wine offered by several restaurants. The guests participated in the middle of the game to cover the holes produced by horseshoes in the field, besides taking many photos. Texas Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration, was one of 54 winners from across the United States and U.S. territories

Arriola has a passion for education and a passion for El Paso that has made Southwest a successful business.

It offers bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees in health administration, nursing, business management, and a variety of health care-related certification programs. It also offers associate degrees in automotive technology.

The school has grown from one single building to a campus with seven buildings at 1414 Geronimo in East Central El Paso, and an 8.500 square-foot automotive tech center at 6500 Montana.

Southwest became better known in 2014, when officials announced a 20-year agreement between the school and the El Paso Chihuahuas baseball team to name the new Downtown baseball stadium Southwest University Park. No financial details were released, but Southwest could be paying millions of dollars for the naming rights if the deal is similar to other minor league baseball stadium naming agreements

Arriola and Southwest met the list of requirements for being nominated for the SBA award, including showing growth in employees, sales and profits; showing staying power; being innovative; and contributing to the community, Ramos-Davidson said

In a statement, Arriola said sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s excited to receive the award. But, she said, the award is not only for her, but also for El Paso and for Southwest Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s students.

Arriola runs Southwest with her husband and son, but she is responsible for setting the overall direction and educational strategy for the school, according to information supplied to the chamber.

he history of this institution starts since its founding, from the need to offer a comprehensive education to students from El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, says Dr. Socorro Brito de Anda, president of the school, who we visited during an interesting tour.

a historia de esta institución comienza desde su fundación, a partir de la necesidad de ofrecer una educación integral a estudiantes de El Paso y también de Ciudad Juárez, nos comenta la Dra. Socorro Brito de Anda, Presidenta de la escuela, a quien visitamos para tener un interesante recorrido.

“The Lydia Patterson Institute has just celebrated 100 years in the community of El Paso -Ciudad Juarez. Here in this place, Mrs. Patterson, a member of the Trinity First United Methodist Church in El Paso, detected a major problem in the community and decided to do something about it. We are talking about a time when many Hispanics were emigrating, from 1890 and especially in the first decades of the twentieth century, during the Mexican Revolution. It was then when many families fled to Mexico and settled in El Paso; naturally, they had children, but they weren’t accepted in public schools, so they were running out of education, especially here in the Segundo Barrio. So, Lydia Patterson saw that need and decided to give them English and Bible classes to Mexican children excluded by society.”

“El Instituto Lydia Patterson acaba de celebrar 100 años en la comunidad de El Paso-Ciudad Juárez. Aquí, en este mismo lugar, la señora Patterson, miembro de la Iglesia Metodista Trinity en El Paso, detectó un importante problema en la comunidad y decidió hacer algo al respecto. Estamos hablando de una época en que emigraban muchos hispanos, a partir de 1890 y principalmente en las primeras décadas del siglo XX, durante la Revolución Mexicana. Fue entonces cuando muchas familias huyeron de México y se establecieron en El Paso; naturalmente, tenían hijos, pero a ellos no se les aceptaba en las escuelas públicas, así que se estaban quedando sin educación, sobre todo aquí en el segundo barrio. Así, Lydia Patterson vio esa necesidad y decidió ir en un carruaje tirado por caballos a darles clases de inglés y de Biblia a los niños mexicanos excluidos por la sociedad”.

“She worked on that for some time and, when she died, her husband donated $75,000 to the United Methodist Church with the intention to build an educational institution in memory of his wife. He said, ‘I want a school to serve those who don’t speak English and also establish a youth department along with pastoral labor, to serve the church.’ At that time, many Mexicans were crossing the border to get to El Paso and other places: there was a great need for schools and churches. That was how the Lydia Patterson Institute was the first school across the country that began with a special English program.”

“Ella realizó ese trabajo por algún tiempo y, cuando falleció, su esposo donó 75 mil dólares a la Iglesia Metodista Unida para que se hiciera una institución educativa en memoria de su esposa. Él dijo: ‘yo quiero que se establezca una escuela para servir a aquellos que no hablan inglés y también que se haga un departamento de jóvenes con una labor pastoral, para servir a la iglesia’. En ese entonces cruzaban la frontera muchos mexicanos para llegar a El Paso y a otros lugares: había una gran necesidad de escuelas, de iglesias. Así fue como el Instituto Lydia Patterson fue la primera escuela de todo el país que empezó con el programa de inglés especial”.

This school has offered an academic environment of integrity and vision by implementing, since 1942, a bilingual education: “From then until now, we have the ESL (English as a second language) program, where most students arrive without speaking English and here they are taught; plus, they are prepared for high school and college. Two years ago we implemented 7th and 8th grades; we were always a high school, 9th to 12th, entirely in English.”

Esta escuela ha ofrecido un ambiente académico de integridad y visión al implantar, desde 1942, la educación bilingüe: “Desde entonces, hasta ahora, tenemos el programa de ESL (inglés como segundo idioma), donde la mayoría de los 76

estudiantes llegan sin hablar inglés y aquí se les enseña; además, se les prepara para la preparatoria y la universidad. Hace dos años implementamos los grados séptimo y octavo, que viene siendo secundaria; siempre fuimos high school, del grado 9 al 12, totalmente en inglés”.

Thousands of young kids have passed through the classrooms of ‘La Lydia ‘, as it’s usually called, with respect and the affection of this great community: “We’ve had countless recognized students, such as Tin Tan, El Loco Valdez and Charro Avitia. Also, Don Teofilo Borunda, who was governor of Chihuahua; Jose Cisneros, a great painter, and many others who learned English. In some cases, this school helped to arrange their legal residence here in the United States.”

Miles de jóvenes han pasado por las aulas de ‘la Lydia’, como le acostumbran decir, con el respeto y cariño de esta gran comunidad: “Hemos tenido un sinnúmero de estudiantes reconocidos, como los famosos Tin Tan, el Loco Valdez y el Charro Avitia. También Don Teófilo Borunda, que fue gobernador de Chihuahua; José Cisneros, un gran pintor, y muchos otros que aprendieron inglés. En algunos casos, esta escuela ayudó para arreglar su residencia legal aquí, en los Estados Unidos”. Los estudiantes de este instituto se destacan no solo por su dedicación en el estudio; la escuela ofrece una educación intercultural, deportiva y ahora con un gran uso de recursos tecnológicos, como lo comenta la Dra. Brito de Anda. “La visión es que ha servido por más de 100 años. Es una escuela muy importante para la comunidad y, para continuar trabajando, debemos actualizarnos y cubrir las necesidades de los próximos 100 años. Nuestros estudiantes deben estar bien preparados para el futuro, por eso estamos remodelando todos los salones equipándolos con la mejor tecnología de pizarrones en línea (smart-boards). Ya no hay libros de texto: se accede a todo a través de la computadora. Al estudiante se le proporciona una tableta para sus estudios”. “Como parte de la educación integral que ofrecemos, también tenemos todos los deportes, excepto el futbol americano, pero el soccer sí lo practicamos. Somos campeones, batallamos para que nos convoquen porque nuestros alumnos son buenos para jugar y, lo mejor de todo, hemos ganado el campeonato estatal”. Lo que destaca a la Lydia Patterson es la formación espiritual, fundamental para los valores cristianos y el desarrollo completo del ser humano. Al respecto, dice la Dra. Brito de

Also, now a great use of technological resources are available, Dr. Brito de Anda said. “The vision has served for more than 100 years. It’s very important for the school and community, and to continue working, that we must update and meet the needs of the next 100 years. Our students must be well prepared for the future. This is why we’re equipping all rooms with the best online whiteboards technology (smart -boards). There are no more textbooks: everything is accessed through the computer. The student is given a tablet for his/her studies.” “As part of the global education we offer, we also have all sports except football, but we do practice soccer. We are champions. We struggled to be summoned because our students play pretty good, but the best of all, is that we have won the state championship.” Fundamentally, Lydia Patterson stands up for its spiritual preparation, key for Christian values and the full development of human beings. In this regard, Dr. Brito de Anda mentions: “I think that education goes beyond academics. For us, it goes beyond the moral ethics and spiritual formation of the student. Here, they are taught that apart from academics, they have a responsibility to themselves and others because they are always involved in helping.”

The institute stands up for its spiritual development, key to Christian values.

It’s a great opportunity for both communities of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez that an institution, such as the Lydia Patterson Institute, supports, with special scholarships, young men and women so they can access middle and high school: “Many students come from low-income families and they’re here because we support them with scholarships; many may have had to stop studying if we hadn’t given them that support. Here, we educate them, send them to college and their lives change completely; and not only theirs but also their families’ too. Our scholarships are based primarily on the financial needs of each family, student grades, their attitude, and their participation in school activities.” The institute places itself with the firm commitment within an administrative council that develops academic excellence and oversees the spiritual lives of its students: “Members of the Lydia Patterson Institute Board are 36 people in eight states, by the fact that the school is connected to the South Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church in those states. We also have local members, which connect us to the community and help us so that the school provides financial support to El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. Many people who don’t belong to this Church also support us to continue serving it.”

Anda: “Creo que la educación va más allá de lo académico. Para nosotros va más allá de la formación moral ética y espiritual del estudiante. Aquí se les enseña que además de lo académico tienen una responsabilidad con sí mismos y con los demás, pues siempre están involucrados en ayudar”. Es una gran oportunidad para ambas comunidades de El Paso y Ciudad Juárez el que una institución, como lo es el Instituto Lydia Patterson, admita con becas especiales a jóvenes y señoritas para que puedan estudiar la secundaria y la preparatoria: “Muchos de los estudiantes vienen de familias de bajos recursos y están aquí porque los apoyamos con becas; muchos quizá hubieran tenido que dejar de estudiar si no les diéramos ese apoyo. Aquí los educamos, los mandamos a la universidad y les cambiamos sus vidas por completo; y no nada más a ellos, sino también a sus familias. Nuestras becas están basadas primordialmente en la necesidad económica de cada familia, en las calificaciones del estudiante, en su actitud y participación en las actividades escolares”. El instituto se ha posicionado con el firme compromiso dentro de un consejo administrativo que desarrolla la excelencia académica y vigila la vida espiritual de sus estudiantes: “Los Miembros de la Mesa Directiva del Instituto Lydia Patterson son 36 personas de ocho estados, por el hecho de que la escuela es parte y está conectada con la Jurisdicción Sur Central de la Iglesia Metodista Unida de dichos estados. También tenemos miembros locales, los cuales nos conectan en la comunidad y nos ayudan para que la escuela brinde apoyo económico a la comunidad de El Paso y Ciudad Juárez. Muchas personas que no pertenecen a esta también nos apoyan para seguir sirviéndola”. Al término de nuestra visita, pudimos comprobar que en este instituto los estudiantes han adquirido una educación intercultural, una formación académica que los ha llevado a obtener oportunidades de desarrollo intelectual, logrando una transformación en su entorno de vida y de la sociedad. Su Presidenta expresó: “Me siento muy orgullosa de que Lydia Patterson ha formado un puente entre dos comunidades, entre dos nacionalidades, entre dos países, causando un gran impacto en ambos lados de la frontera. El 50 % de mis maestros y de mi staff son graduados de Lydia Patterson, y eso causa un impacto muy fuerte en el éxito de la educación, porque ellos estudiaron aquí y muchos fueron estudiantes becados”.

At the end of our visit, we found that in this institute students have acquired an intercultural education and an academic training that has led them to obtain opportunities for intellectual development, achieving a transformation in their living environment and society. Its president said: “I feel very proud that Lydia Patterson has formed a bridge between two communities, between two nationalities, between two countries, causing a great impact on both sides of the border. 50% of my teachers and my staff are Lydia Patterson graduates, and that causes a very strong impact on the education success, because they studied here and many were scholarship students.” Finally, Dr. Brito de Anda expressed her satisfaction: “I have worked here for over 30 years and I am very pleased that, thanks to Lydia Patterson Institute, we have thousands of professionals, doctors, lawyers, etc., in our community and everywhere in the world. Another of my greatest satisfactions is to see the ethical and spiritual formation of all our graduates. I like to see them fulfilled, happy and above all, knowing that they don’t forget about ‘La Lydia’ because they always come back. Let ‘La Lydia’ continue 100 years more so its heritage and legacy will never end, because after us many more will follow!”

Finalmente, la Dra. Brito de Anda nos manifestó su satisfacción: “He trabajado aquí por más de 30 años y estoy muy satisfecha de que, gracias al Instituto Lydia Patterson, tengamos miles de profesionistas, doctores, abogados, etc., en nuestra comunidad y en todas partes del mundo. Otra de mis grandes satisfacciones es ver la formación ética y espiritual de todos nuestros egresados. Me gusta verlos realizados, felices y sobre todo, saber que no se olvidan de ‘la Lydia’ porque siempre regresan. ¡Que la Lydia siga otros 100 años y que su herencia y legado nunca termine, porque después de nosotros vienen muchos más!”
