hree issues have gone, and the satisfaction of what is being achieved is a reflection of the effort and constant work of our team that has grown this year, who’s dedicated to both web and print production, including editing, information, style correction, and translation. It is truly a great opportunity to have participated in this edition with the Pope Francis’ visit coverage, and give our readers the best of our work in images witnessing one of the most important events in Ciudad Juarez, whose people continues celebrating. In this edition, we are pleased to feature the largest state in Mexico: Chihuahua, whose splendor takes us to different times in the countrys’ history thanks to the personalities who have walked through it: Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Francisco Villa and David Alfaro Siqueiros, among others. It is important to highlight and thank our collaborators involved in the reportages of interest outside the region, such as Inhabits group. From New York, on this occasion, they give us tools and ideas to improve our personal economy today. At the same time, it’s amazing to know different lifestyles, such as Alejandro Chacón, who in our section of destinations we draw his experiences around the world and, thanks to his photographs, he shows beautiful images of places we’d all like to visit . We’re also surprised that an area of El Paso, Texas, is traveled by thousands of birds of a great diversity of species; we never imagined this kind of visitors on our border. Thanks to the work of Avi Kotkowski, we can admire this phenomenon on this fourth edition of Border Heritage. Sin embargo, cuando ese mariposeo aleteó dentro de sus entrañas, no se lo pensó dos veces. Presentamos a Alex Chacón: videógrafo, fotógrafo, creador de contenido, video blogger, y productor de videos en YouTube. Claro, y trotamundos. Estudió en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso y en Austin. Su carrera solía ser Ciencias Biomédicas... Es muy intrigante escucharte hablar en pasado sobre tu carrera. ¿Cómo empezaste a viajar y por qué causa?

Meet Alex Chacon: videographer, photographer, content creator, video blogger, YouTube video producer, and of course, globetrotter. He studied at the University of Texas at El Paso and Austin. His career used to be Biomedical Sciences... It is very intriguing to hear that about your past career. How did you get to travel and for what reason? Well, I started my travels 4 years ago. I graduated from college and was about to go to medical school but I was very curious of the world, and I had never really left the country. So, I wanted to find out how people were living, what problems they had in the world, and above all, I wanted to know it better. I took a career break and sold everything I had. I sold my television, my clothes, my car, I bought a bike and left with everything I had. I didn’t know when I was going to stop. I knew I was going to South America but didn’t know how much time it was going to take me or if I would return. Then, I went traveling. So, I created a blog and wrote much of what I was doing. Then, I was doing photography, and later became videos, and then V-Blogs or Video Blogging, and then it turned into pro-

Bueno, empecé mis viajes ya hace 4 años. Me gradué de la universidad e iba a entrar a la escuela de medicina pero tenía mucha curiosidad del mundo, y realmente nunca había salido del país. Así que quise descubrir cómo estaba viviendo la gente, qué problemas había en el mundo, quería sobre todo conocerlo. Entonces tomé una pausa en la carrera y vendí todo lo que tenía. Vendí mi televisión, mi ropa, mi carro, me compré una moto y me subí con todo lo que tenía. No sabía hasta dónde iba a llegar. Sabía que iba a ir a Sudamérica pero no sabía cuánto iba a tardar ni si iba a regresar. Entonces, me fui de viaje. De ahí creé un blog y escribí mucho de lo que estaba haciendo. I love that feeling! Which one was your first trip? Alaska to Argentina. I started in El Paso. I went out and got to the end of the world in Argentina, all the way to the south of the continent. Then, I traveled back through Brazil. I went all the any up to Alaska and came back. And I did it all in 500 days. It is easier to say that I made the trip from Alaska to Argentina. We’re talking about a year and a half.

¡Me gusta ese sentimiento! ¿Cuál fue tu primer viaje? De Alaska a Argentina. Empecé en El Paso. Salí y llegué hasta el fin del mundo en Argentina, hasta el sur del continente. Después regresé por Brasil. Subí, subí y me fui a Alaska y regresé. Y todo lo hice en 500 días. Es más fácil decir que hice el viaje de Alaska a Argentina.

Well, yes, you can help people, travel and continue but the million dollar question is: how did you survive on your travels? How did you manage to survive? The idea was a personal idea. It was an adventure and an exploration of myself, and that led me to realize that I like to help people. Now that I had many people following me, I wanted to make a difference and contribute to help people in Guatemala, Belize, etc., motivate and inspire them to also help others in their own way.

The trips I’m currently doing in Asia, India, now in New Zealand, Europe, and even Mexico, help promoting tourism but now I do several things as well. Now, I receive income through YouTube with videos that I make. I also do larger projects with the touristic mysteries in Turkey, New Zealand and Mexico, as well as developing social media campaigns. But more than anything, I’m doing what I love: traveling, see the world, share cultures with photos, videos, blogs, video blogs, and so on. ebruary 17, 2016 was an unusual, historical and memorable Wednesday for Ciudad Juarez. Motivated by faith, a special magic was perceived by the energy of thousands of souls from different places. Pope Francis, hierarch of the Catholic Church, stepped on Juarense ground to leave a trace on his path through an encouraging message.

l 17 de febrero del 2016 fue un miércoles inusual, histórico e inolvidable para Ciudad Juárez. Una magia especial se percibía gracias a la energía de miles de almas provenientes de diferentes lugares y motivadas por la fe. El papa Francisco, jerarca de la Iglesia católica, pisó suelo juarense para dejar huella y a su paso, transmitir un mensaje alentador. There is no room where his mercy can’t reach, no space or person he can’t touch.” These words were part of the message of His Holiness, who also urged the inmates to fight from within to reverse the situations that generate exclusion and help stop the cycle of violence. Between hundreds of convicts, he was attentive and heard the testimony from an immate woman who represented the thousands of men and women behind the walls of a prison. Thrilled, she said: “Your visit will remain etched in our hearts. Your gentle presence of pilgrim fills us with hope and joy; because the visit an internal recieves becomes food that nourishes us with faith and hope to soon return home and reunite with our families.”

On a table, he laid flowers before the inspired gaze of both Mexicans and Americans.

Green, white and red handkerchiefs decorated the moment, as many sang and danced Mexican folk melodies: Cielito Lindo and Las Golondrinas marked the event. Finally, Pope Francis fulfilled the promise he made to Mexico. His face was reflecting a gratifying smile. His visit to Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, once considered the most violent city in the world, let its people pleased with a sense of optimism and, as His Holiness confirmed it, “in this town, there are many lights that announce hope.”

A charismatic, humble and demanding man with himself and other people; Great ability to communicate and listen to what others need mean to say; Concerned about peace and harmony among people, nations and religions. However, not all are his “fans”. There are commentators in the media and on social networks who would like to find any obscure point in his past to disavow. They scavenge and can’t find, so sometimes they make up or “interpret” what he says and what he does, because from purely sociological, economic or political views, they don’t meet his expectations. He said - and rightly - that priests are like airplanes: “We are only noticed when we fall.” I like to think that under some attitudes there is more ignorance than malice, although sometimes it doesn’t seem that way. Judging the Church with purely

human schemes is like grading Picasso paintings with a car engine. Of course, the Pope left many spaces uncovered, “hot topics” untouched; Unresolved “Sensitive issues” such as economy, politics, even the life of the Church and the priests require answers ... Well, I wonder if there’s anyone on the surface of the earth who can do it, especially in a five days trip. To the “secularists experts on matters of the Church”, the Pope’s visit to Mexico left them hungry to think how much he said. But he did not come to sell. He came to visit, and this may not be understood because in our daily lives visits are not frequent. Today, children no longer visit their parents with the same assiduity they did few years ago. Our lifestyle allows us to keep in touch by phone and other means that do not convey the warmth of a hug or a kiss. It is true: politicians visit poor colonies to win votes;

The Pope, however, doesn’t need support for a re-election because his position is for life, or at least lasts until he decides. Some opinion makers confuse the Vicar of Christ with Christ himself, and feel disappointed that he doesn’t do miracles, but they forget that the Pope is not God. It is difficult to understand the spiritual schemes; this is like trying to describe green color to a blind person. Now, all the money spent by many local and foreign people traveling to view him in person - although, they could only see him through a street-, the many hours in harsh climates, apart from other discomforts, were not enough to make them lose their joy. The vast majority came out with the idea that all that effort was worthwhile, and that is, to my understanding, that this phenomenon still shows us the many millions who are hungry for God... Bless this hunger!

ías de intenso trabajo, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que cumplirá los 80 años próximamente. Hombre carismático, sencillo y exigente con él mismo y con los demás. Don de gentes y gran capacidad para comunicarse y escuchar lo que le quieren decir. Preocupado por la paz y la concordia entre las personas, las naciones y las religiones. Sin embargo, no todos son sus “fanáticos”. Hay comentaristas en los medios y en las redes sociales a quienes les gustaría encontrarle algún punto oscuro en su pasado para poder desautorizarlo. Escarban y no encuentran, por eso a veces inventan o “interpretan” lo que dice y lo que hace, pues desde puntos de vista puramente sociológicos, económicos o políticos no llena sus expectativas. Decía un presbítero —y con razón— que los sacerdotes, como los aviones: solamente somos noticia cuando nos caemos. Quiero pensar que debajo de algunas actitudes hay más ignorancia que mala voluntad —aunque a veces no lo parezca. Juzgar a la Iglesia con esquemas puramente humanos es como calificar las pinturas de Picasso comparándolas con el motor de un automóvil. Claro que el Papa dejó muchos espacios sin cubrir, “temas candentes” sin tocar; “asuntos delicados” sin resolver, de aquellos que sobre economía, política, incluso de la vida de la iglesia y los sacerdotes requieren respuestas… Bien, me pregunto si hay sobre la superficie de la tierra quien pueda hacerlo, en especial durante un viaje de cinco días. A los “expertos laicistas en temas de la Iglesia”,

la visita de Papa a México los dejó con hambre de pensar lo mucho que dijo. Pero no vino a vender. Vino a visitarnos, y esto quizá no pueda ser entendido porque en nuestra cotidianidad la visita no es frecuente. Hoy los hijos ya no visitan a sus padres con la misma asiduidad con la que lo hacían hasta hace pocos años. Nuestro estilo de vida nos permite mantenernos comunicados por el celular y otros medios que no son capaces de trasmitir el calor de un abrazo o un beso. Es cierto: los políticos visitan las colonias pobres para ganar votos; el Papa, en cambio, no necesita apoyo para reelegirse pues su puesto es vitalicio, o por lo menos durará hasta que él lo decida. Algunos formadores de opinión confunden al Vicario de Cristo con el mismo Cristo, y se sienten decepcionados porque no hace milagros, pero olvidan que el Papa no es Dios. Es difícil comprender los esquemas espirituales; esto es parecido a tratar de explicar a un invidente cómo es el color verde. Ahora bien, todo el dinero que gastaron tantas personas, viajeras y cercanas a la región, para poder verlo en persona —aunque sólo fuera al pasar por alguna avenida—, las muchas horas a la intemperie en climas desfavorables, amén de otras incomodidades, no fueron capaces de hacerles perder su alegría. La inmensa mayoría salía con la idea de que había valido la pena todo ese esfuerzo, y es que, a mi modo de entender, este fenómeno todavía nos demuestra los muchos millones de personas que tienen hambre de Dios… ¡Bendita hambre!

“Que bonito es Chihuahua!”, the popular song’s lyrics reverberate. There’s no doubt: the hospitality of its people, the XIX old colonial buildings’ wealth and its modern constructions project the new development to locals and visitors.

lthough the advances in its infrastructure, it’s still a city where we can breathe a conservative air. Talking to its people is synonymous to warmth and nobleness. By the way, who doesn’t distinguish a Chihuahuense by the accent and way of speaking, with that dragged “ch” that makes it so distinctive compared to people from other states in Mexico? In the last 10 years, Chihuahua has become a major tourist spot, not only nationally but globally, by being considered a city with attractive entertainment, art, culture, and exquisite culinary places. Walking through the historic downtown is a true delight. Its architecture and clean streets embellish a worthy panorama to admire. From north to south and from west to east, the capital offers a variety of recreation centers within a framework of security and family atmosphere. Walking through the parks, plazas, historic buildings, and shopping centers is to feel the different stages that this city has lived. History The city of Chihuahua was founded in 1709 by Antonio Deza and Ulloa. It’s located on a divided valley by the Chuviscar River. Before colonization, this territory was occupied by creole Indians. Through its history it has been the cradle of major events nationwide. Its name means “a dry and sandy place.” Its beautiful and stunning historic downtown is adorned with a majestic architecture; it’s located on calle Libertad, today Casa Chihuahua, where we can see an interactive museum where different regions of the state are shown. Chihuahua has many landmarks, buildings and stories that have marked Mexico’s destiny. One of these sites is the Museo Casa Redonda, which this time adorns our cover. The wonderful and imposing semicircular building was once a repair shop for railway locomotives. It was built in the nineteenth century and was at the mid- nineties when it stopped working due to technological changes. In 2000, several changes were made in these areas to turn it into what is now the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, which is composed by permanent showrooms and temporary exhibitions of renowned artists, mostly painters and sculptors.

Y por cierto, ¿quién no distingue a un chihuahuense por su acento y su hablar, con esa “ch” arrastrada que lo hace característico en comparación a la gente de otros estados de México? En los últimos 10 años, Chihuahua se ha convertido en un punto turístico importante, no solamente a nivel nacional sino a nivel mundial, al ser considerada una urbe que cuenta con atractivos lugares de diversión, arte, cultura y qué decir de su gastronomía de gran sabor. Pasear por el centro histórico es verdaderamente un deleite. Su arquitectura y sus limpias avenidas revisten un panorama digno de admirar. De Norte a Sur y de Poniente a Oriente, la capital ofrece una gran variedad de centros de recreación en un marco de seguridad y ambiente familiar. Caminar por los parques, plazuelas, edificios históricos y centros comerciales es ir sintiendo las diferentes etapas que ha vivido esta ciudad.

We can’t fail to mention the fabulous cathedral, a true architectural treasure of the eighteenth century and beautiful example of Baroque art in Mexico. The Palacio de Gobierno is also an attractive spot for tourists. Its stone facade, with details carved in stone, makes it an admirable monument; also, inside several large murals depict the history of Chihuahua. Around, is the Plaza Mayor, with his angel of freedom, the Casa Chihuahua and the Palacio Municipal. Further south, along the Simon Bolivar promenade, the Quinta Gameros is located, a “porfiriana” mansion with exquisite touches of art nouveau, whose soft lines, floral and garden ornaments, refer us to a different time in an European place. The feeling is reinforced when entering, because in its rooms stand out the woodwork , oil paintings of Italian painters and floral carved wood finials. The house now belongs to the Universidad de Chihuahua and functions as an active cultural center.

Historia

Walking down the calle Libertad, known locally as the “la liber,” means enjoying the pleasure of shopping in its stores, food stalls and karaoke bars; Plaza Mayor offers the dancing fountains spectacle, where water jets dance in sync with classical and popular music as a light show adorns the event. There is a lookout tower for a practically panoramic view of the city.

La ciudad de Chihuahua fue fundada en el año de 1709 por Antonio Deza y Ulloa. Se encuentra asentada sobre un valle dividido por el Río Chuviscar. Antes de su colonización, este territorio fue ocupado por indios criollos. A través de su historia ha sido cuna de grandes acontecimientos a nivel nacional. Se dice que su nombre significa “lugar seco y arenoso”. Su bello e imponente centro histórico está adornado con majestuosa arquitectura; se ubica sobre la calle Libertad, hoy Casa Chihuahua, donde se puede apreciar un museo interactivo en el que se muestran las diferentes regiones del estado. En el sótano, además de algunos especímenes de la Casa de Moneda que anteriormente albergó ese mismo edificio, se halla la última morada de don Miguel Hidalgo, el sacerdote que comenzó la guerra de Independencia de México. No podemos dejar de mencionar la fabulosa catedral, verdadera joya arquitectónica del siglo XVIII y bello ejemplo del arte barroco en México. It’s well worth the journey, since is considered one of the best railway journeys of the world and the reasons are very good, especially when the landscape is greener thanks to summer rains. For all these reasons and more that we can’t cover in just a few pages, Chihuahua has become one of the most frequented places by tourists from around the world in the recent years, which has consistently allowed the city to add elements of a modern city without losing its history essence and origin, offering world-class services in all niches to the delight of visitors. The greatness of this northern site of Mexico is confirmed by its customs and its people: “pa’ gente buena Chihuahua, que es valiente, noble y leal.”

Pocos notan la complejidad de esta tarea, a simple vista muy sencilla, sin admirar la labor de quien hace todo lo posible por generar condiciones favorables para que el público pueda apreciar cada obra. Con el objetivo de valorarlo desde su punto de vista, platicamos con el curador de El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA), Christian J. Gerstheimer, sobre su trabajo para la exposición Knot: The Art of Sebastian/ El Arte de Sebastian.

bjects, texts, video images, sound, lighting, a character, and even an adequate temperature are the necessary elements that contribute to develop a particular atmosphere in an art exhibition. Few notice the complexity of this task, which at first sight seems very simple, without admiring the work of who makes every effort creating favorable conditions for the public to appreciate a display. With the intention of learning from his point of view, we talked to the El Paso Museum of Art’s (EPMA) curator, Christian J. Gerstheimer, about his work on the exhibition Knot: The Art of Sebastian / El Arte de Sebastian. We arrived at the largest room for EPMA temporary exhibitions, which is a scene containing the works created by Enrique Carbajal, a famous master, artist and sculptor known worldwide as Sebastian, the inventor of a language inspired by seemingly dissimilar fields such as geometry, cosmology, quantum physics, and art. Llegamos a la sala más grande destinada a exposiciones temporales del EPMA, escenario que contiene obras creadas por Enrique Carbajal, famoso maestro, artista y escultor conocido mundialmente como Sebastian, el inventor de un lenguaje propio inspirado en campos aparentemente 55

disímiles como la geometría, la cosmología, la física cuántica y el arte. Ahí nos recibió Christian. Gracias a su trabajo, pudimos sentir que estábamos siendo trasladados a un plano infinito, donde iban apareciendo las piezas de brillantes colores, construidas en acero o concreto. En definitiva, estábamos en una dimensión muy distinta a la atmósfera de las demás salas del EPMA, en El Paso, Texas, cuyos muros albergan otras obras de gran importancia. Quizá es por esto que cada trabajo de Sebastian es una pieza de valor reconocido a nivel mundial. Debe ser difícil lograr un ambiente tan diferente como el de esta exposición? Fue un trabajo arduo y muy excitante. Fue complicado traer tantas piezas desde la Ciudad de México, puesto que en el proceso fueron necesarios muchos trámites aduaneros que no hubiéramos realizado con obras provenientes de lugares dentro de EUA; sin embargo, era algo que realmente queríamos hacer, pues es muy importante para nuestro museo mostrar la exhibición actualmente y estamos honrados de tenerla en El Paso. Los colores y las formas son de gran importancia para un especialista en curaduría, pero ¿cómo se logra un mecanismo

aplicado a la técnica del montaje? Seleccionamos todas las piezas que iban a exhibirse en la galería, específicamente de varias series que Sebastian ha desarrollado, para así incluir varias etapas de su carrera. Especialmente queríamos mostrar las décadas de los años setenta, ochenta, noventa y lo que va de este milenio. Además, el color es importantísimo en sus obras; queríamos mostrar, a través de la exhibición, el manejo de este elemento por parte del artista. Hay algunas piezas en un rojo intenso y otras con tonalidades más tenues, pues pretendemos, al plasmar la gama de colores que utiliza, dar una prueba de su maravilloso trabajo. Algunas son réplicas de esculturas de gran formato que muchos conocemos por estar ubicadas en el paisaje urbano de distintos países. Al caminar junto a las piezas, nos dimos cuenta del trabajo que implicó al curador construir varios elementos complementarios, inclusive vimos muchos que ayudan a preservar la integridad de las obras? Además, es necesario acomodar cada una en el lugar exacto que le corresponde en relación con las otras. ¿Cómo se logra encontrar ese sitio perfecto para cada cosa? Las piezas se basan en la medida y en el concepto, las series que ha elaborado el

Suddenly, we were transported into a very distinct dimension compared to the atmosphere from other rooms at the EPMA, in El Paso, Texas, whose walls host other works of great importance. Perhaps, that is why each of Sebastianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work pieces is valued and recognized worldwide. It must be difficult to achieve such a genuine ambience as this exhibition does. It was an arduous but exciting work. It was difficult to bring so many pieces from Mexico City, since we had many customs procedures in the process that we havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had with other works coming within the US; however, it was something we really wanted to do because, for our museum, it is extremely important to show the current display, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re honored to have it in El Paso. The colors and shapes are of great importance for a curatorial specialist, but how do you achieve an applied mechanism to an assembly technique? We select all the pieces that were to be

exhibited in the gallery, specifically several series that Sebastian has developed, so we can include several stages of his career. We wanted to show the decades of the seventies, eighties, nineties and this millennium so far. Besides, the color is quite important in his works; we wanted to show, through the exhibition, the management of this element by the artist. There are some pieces in a deep red and others with paler shades, as we understood, to capture the range of colors used and illustrating his wonderful work. Some are large sculptures replicas that many of us know due to their urban landscape locations in different countries. When walking next to the pieces, we realized the amount of work the curator had when building several additional elements, including many that help to preserve the integrity of artworks. In addition, it is necessary to fit each in the exact place in relation to the other. How you do find that perfect place for everything? The pieces are based on the extent and in the concept, the series that the artist has produced and the ones that belong to a different stage of his career. We begin with the exhibition of his most recent work, although

Iniciamos la exhibición con parte de su más reciente trabajo, aunque son algunas de las obras más grandes que recibimos para la exposición. Por esto, intentamos distribuirlas por toda la sala de acuerdo a su tamaño y color, y así hacerla más atractiva e interesante para los visitantes. Tuvimos un esquema de prueba de la exhibición antes de que todo el material llegara, pero cuando todo el trabajo arribó, aún tuvimos que hacer algunos cambios después de revisar el resultado en las diferentes locaciones, para hacer más dinámico el recorrido del espectador. Debe ser interesante trabajar con uno de los grandes del arte contemporáneo. Fue muy gratificante trabajar con Sebastian, aunque tomó tiempo debido a que él tiene muchísimos compromisos y nuestra comunicación cuando queríamos consultar algún detalle era casi siempre en línea. Por ejemplo, le otorgaron en México el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes 2015, así que asistió a la ceremonia. Todos tuvimos una agenda muy ocupada; sin embargo, sí logramos vernos en persona varias veces, durante más de un año, para planear la exhibición. La idea de dar a conocer esta muestra, la primera de su tipo en esta frontera Juárez-El Paso, va más allá de una exposición de artistas contemporáneos; Sebastian es uno de los mejores escultores de México, lo que significa mucho para

nuestra región. El espectador potencial decidirá su asistencia a partir de esto. Sebastian es un hombre sencillo y dedicado a su obra, lo cual ayudó mucho para lograr un buen trabajo. Él estuvo presente la semana anterior a la apertura y va a volver en mayo para ser parte de un programa educativo. Estoy emocionado porque el trabajo en conjunto ha sido productivo y sabemos que nos deja una gran enseñanza, no solo al público asistente a la exhibición, sino también a su taller, charla donde se han incluido con mucho éxito casi 300 personas. Puedo decir que trabajar con Sebastian y su obra es de lo que más he disfrutado. Espero que visiten y se deleiten en esta sala de El Paso Museum of Art, en Texas. Durante nuestra conversación, Christian J. Gerstheimer nos explicó detalladamente cómo realizó el trabajo para esta muestra, tanto que hemos sentido cada parte del proceso siguiendo la misma línea artística de su curaduría, la cual logra una armonía que, como espectadores, podemos percibir en Knot. Al mismo tiempo, él nos transmitió un gusto por su importante actividad. Además, aquí confirmamos que El Paso Museum of Art y el Consulado General de México en El Paso han resaltado por su constante apoyo a las manifestaciones culturales, pues sin su soporte institucional no podríamos tener acceso a eventos de esta naturaleza.

they are some of the biggest works we got for the exhibition. Therefore, we tried to distribute them throughout the gallery according to their size and color, and thus make it more attractive and interesting for visitors. We had a test display scheme before all the material arrived, but when all the work came, we still had to make some changes after reviewing the results in different locations to make more dynamic the course of the beholder. It should be interesting to work with one of the greatest of contemporary art. It was so rewarding to work with Sebastian, although it took time due to the amount of commitments he has, plus our communication was usually online. For example, he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes 2015 in Mexico, where he attended the ceremony. We all had a busy schedule; however, we did met in person several times and for more than a year to plan the exhibition. The idea on presenting this exhibition, the first of its kind in this border of Juarez-El Paso, goes beyond a contemporary artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; exhibition; Sebastian is one of the best Mexican sculptors, which means a lot to our region. The potential viewer will decide his/her attendance from this. Sebastian is a simple man dedicated to his work, which helped a lot to achieve great work. He attended the opening last week and will return in May to be part of an educational program. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m excited because the joint work has been productive and we

From its inception, these young people are engaged in recreational activities, such as watching movies, cycling, dancing, yoga, going to the zoo and, of course, playing basketball. As part of this project, it is intended to include cultural activities such as crafts, art exhibitions and museum visits in the future. No estamos hablando nada más de un equipo, sino de compañerismo, de una familia cuya historia comenzó con su fundación en 2010, gracias a una iniciativa de padres de hijos con síndrome de Down. A partir de su creación, estos jóvenes se dedican a realizar actividades recreativas, como son ir al cine, practicar ciclismo, bailar, hacer yoga, ir al zoológico y, por supuesto, jugar básquetbol. Como parte de este proyecto, en el futuro se quieren incluir actividades culturales como manualidades, exposiciones de arte y visitas a museos.

Hispanic unity: addressing the necessary requirement for migrant challenges

n this regard, an important issue for the border is the NAFTA international agreement or Free Trade Agreement. On one hand, there is a risk that if republican candidate Donald Trump reaches the presidency, may intend to revoke that agreement for considering that Americans lose jobs because of this Treaty, which favors employment opportunities for Mexicans. On the contrary, if democrat candidate Hillary Clinton wins, the visa, which covers the alliance, would remain in place to preserve the jobs of Hispanic professionals. John Moore, a lawyer for the Villalobos & Moore firm, and specialist on immigration issues, explains that thanks to this agreement, many Mexicans with different professions (engineers, architects and teachers, among others) have the opportunity to obtain a work permit in the United States. The visa applications from consultants to managers are very common for NAFTA, and the law only requires them, so they can work in the United States, to have an offer of any company. In other words, Moore means that under this law, one just needs to provide documentation and meet the requirements. Typically, a business owner in the United States must first try to find an American employee before offering the job to a Mexican; however, from NAFTA’s perspective, in this case, this it’s not necessary for him/ her because it is completely free to choose the right person to meet his/her expectations. This, according to Moore, is much better to the business owner. “People are frightened by the possibility of Trump winning the presidency; but that’s not the worst, because although he doesn’t win, there are indexes showing that 40% of the republican people in this country thinks like him and that scares me... At the moment, as a law firm, we have more work from people who want to have their papers in order before the November elections,” said Moore. n ese sentido, un tema importante para la frontera es el acuerdo internacional de NAFTA o Tratado del Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN). Por una parte, existe el riesgo de que, de llegar a ganar la presidencia el candidato Donald Trump, del Partido Republicano, pretenda revocar ese acuerdo por considerar que los norteamericanos pierden empleos gracias a este Tratado que favorece con oportunidades laborales a los mexicanos. Por el contrario, de ser Hillary Clinton del Partido Demócrata la que gane, la visa que ampara esta alianza seguiría vigente para preservar el trabajo de los profesionistas hispanos. Así lo expone John More, abogado de la firma Villalobos & More, especialista en temas migratorios, quien explica que gracias a ese acuerdo, muchos mexicanos con diversas profesiones (ingenieros, arquitectos y contadores, entre otros) tienen la oportunidad de obtener un permiso de trabajo en la Unión Americana. Son muy frecuentes para NAFTA las solicitudes de visa por parte de consultores para las gerencias, y la ley solamente les solicita, para que puedan trabajar en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, tener una oferta de alguna compañía. Refiere More que bajo esta ley es suficiente con presentar la documentación y cumplir los requisitos. Normalmente, un patrón en los Estados Unidos debe tratar primero de encontrar un empleado norteamericano antes de ofrecerle el trabajo a uno mexicano; sin embargo, para una vista NAFTA, esto no es necesario porque en este caso él es completamente libre de elegir a la persona adecuada que cubra sus expectativas. Esto, según More, es mucho mejor para el patrón. “La gente está asustada por la posibilidad de que Trump vaya a ganar la presidencia; pero eso no es lo más grave, pues aunque no gane, hay índices de que el 40% de las personas de voto republicano de este país piensa como él y eso me asusta… Por el momento, como despacho de abogados, tenemos más trabajo debido a la gente que quiere tener sus papeles en regla antes de las elecciones de noviembre”, indica More. El experto en temas migratorios opina que Trump no

tendrá el poder para cambiar el sistema actual completo, pero sí un margen; por ejemplo, está criticando el programa de visas temporales, como la H1B y NAFTA, por creer que roba trabajos y oportunidades a los norteamericanos. Otros de los programas susceptibles de ser afectados, de acuerdo con la visión del jurista, son, por un lado, el de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés), dirigido a inmigrantes que llegaron antes de los quince años a los Estado Unidos y no han cometido ciertos delitos graves. Por otro, está el de Acción Diferida para Padres de Estadounidenses y Residentes Permanentes Legales (DAPA, por sus siglas en inglés), actualmente pendiente un order de la corte suprema del país. Quienes no sufrirían por estas reformas son los aspirantes a recibir su ciudadanía o residencia por medio de un matrimonio legal estadounidense y los padres ciudadanos que quieran tramitar la residencia a sus hijos mayores. Por ahora, las personas de habla hispana que pretenden arreglar su ciudadanía no tienen como requisito dominar el idioma inglés; por ejemplo, alguien de 50 o 55 años con 15 o 20 de residencia puede arreglarla en español. Sin embargo, en esta campaña, Trump y otros republicanos argumentan que el inglés debe ser el idioma oficial de los Estados Unidos, lo cual imposibilitaría a varios el obtener su estatus de

El problema que nadie sabe y toma en cuenta, advierte More, es el poder de la gente para cambiar esta situación y no permitir a las autoridades locales afectar los derechos de los residentes impedidos de votar. Algunas ciudades de Estados Unidos ofrecen votar a todas las personas en estas elecciones, no sólo a los ciudadanos. Nueva York está argumentando esa posibilidad en este 2016, pero hay ciudades cerca de Washington D.C. que ya tienen ese derecho. More enfatiza: “Mi consejo es que debemos unirnos y exigir posiciones liberales y no antiguas para las visas de este tipo”. Por ello, recomienda informarse y estar preparados.
