During this year, we have enjoyed articles and images that throughout the time have been talked to us about the past and the heritage that characterizes our region.
Un año en el que hemos disfrutado historias que nos han hablado del pasado, de su herencia y, sobre todo, de esas imágenes que nos han caracterizado a lo largo de este tiempo.
The route to this achievement has not been easy. We have encountered many obstacles along the road. However, Border Heritage Magazine counts with a team of professionals committed with our values and their work. Today, I can say we are a family who strives to be unified in the same goals and purposes.

ince it’s first edition in 2014, “Fiesta Juarez en Familia” has become the most important festival of art, culture and traditions in our region. The festival connects the world with the new face of Ciudad Juarez. The popular Fiesta Juarez will be held from September ,16th to October, 9th at the ‘X’ square where “The Mexicanidad” monument stands. This is a center for family fun and entertainment. It is a great opportunity to enjoy music, art, and crafts. This year, the festival is targeting more families from El Paso, Las Cruces, Socorro, Fabens, and surrounding areas. The main attraction is a ‘Global Wheel’. It will stand at 148 feet high, and it is considered the highest in Latin America. For the more adventurous people there will be a Mega King tower, that has a free fall of 262 feet, and the riders will experience speeds of 62 miles per hour.

esde su primera edición en el 2014, “Fiesta Juárez en Familia” se ha convertido en la celebración más representativa de arte, cultura y tradición en esta frontera, enlazando al mundo con el nuevo rostro de Ciudad Juárez. La Plaza de la ‘X’, es el recinto que alberga la diversión y alegría de los fronterizos que han disfrutado de una feria que logra mezclar lo tradicional e innovador de una celebración. “Fiesta Juárez en Familia” en su tercera edición, ofrece los mejores espectáculos de música, cultura, deporte, arte y entretenimiento. A nivel nacional, garantiza diversión para chicos y grandes desde el 16 de septiembre hasta el 9 de octubre. Como es tradición, el comité organizador de este importante festival busca las mejores atracciones y en esta ocasión se logró concretar la instalación del juego mecánico “Global Wheel”, una rueda de la fortuna móvil de 45 metros de altura, considerada como la más grande en América Latina. Para los amantes de la adrenalina, por segundo año consecutivo, la “Mega King Tower” ofrece una experiencia increíble con una caída libre de 80 metros a una velocidad de 100 kilómetros por hora, además de 40 juegos mecánicos de primer nivel, seis de ellos de alto impacto. Gracias al éxito obtenido el año pasado con miles de espectadores y porque la gente lo pide, “Fiesta Juárez en Familia” regala la oportunidad de disfrutar del “Circo de los Chicharrines”, un show reconocido a nivel nacional para todas las edades, con funciones programadas durante todos los días de la temporada y el ingreso está disponible tan solo con adquirir el boleto de entrada. Gilberto Cueva Pizarro, presidente del Comité Organizador, aseguró que gracias al éxito obtenido en las anteriores ediciones, este año esperan atraer a más familias de las ciudades vecinas de El Paso, Las Cruces, Socorro y Fabens. “La expectativa de la afluencia es ofrecer más y mejores espectáculos en vivo con artistas nacionales e internacionales para lograr que más personas visiten nuestra ciudad”, explicó Gilberto Cueva. La extensión de esta gran feria es de nueve hectáreas que se ubican en la Plaza de la ‘X’ y terrenos aledaños. Para acudir en vehículo, se disponen de 7 mil cajones de estacionamiento en las inmediaciones de la plaza así como en puntos estratégicos sobre la avenida Heroico Colegio Militar, avenida Universidad y avenida Rafael Pérez Serna. El costo de entrada es de $50 pesos o 3 dólares, mientras que los niños (menores de 120 cm de estatura), adultos mayores y personas con discapacidad entran gratis. El horario es de lunes a domingo de 6:00 pm a 2:00 am. De lunes a jueves los juegos mecánicos son gratis (excepto los juegos de alto impacto).

Four cities, one region: our heritage Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez, Las Cruces and El Paso are united by a historic legacy that constitutes their heritage. Despite the rocky landscape, they blossomed like gems in the desert. Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez, Las Cruces y El Paso están unidas por un legado histórico que constituye su herencia. A pesar del entorno agreste, florecieron como joyas en el desierto.

odeadas por el desierto y separadas por una extensa frontera, hay cuatro ciudades con un estilo de vida vigoroso, industrial y moderno, ellas están unidas por el mismo legado histórico que constituye su herencia: Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez, Las Cruces y El Paso. En cuanto a su situación geográfica, podemos nombrar al Río Grande, el cual desciende desde Nuevo México, pasa por Las Cruces y define el límite entre El Paso, en Texas, y el condado de Doña Ana, para después intersecarse con la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, separando El Paso de Ciudad Juárez, donde es llamado Río Bravo. El desierto de Samalayuca nos adentra, desde la frontera, en el estado de Chihuahua y hacia su capital. Puede decirse que el camino principal que unió a estas cuatro ciudades cuando algunas no eran ni siquiera poblados incipientes fue elegido por los azares de la ambición: un conquistador español exploró en 1598 el territorio buscando oro y metales valiosos, y a partir de ese momento se fue construyendo una parte de la larga y famosa ruta denominada Camino Real o Camino de la Plata, que comenzaba en la capital de la Nueva España —ahora Ciudad de México—, y terminaba más allá de Santa Fe, en el actual estado de Nuevo México. A pesar del entorno agreste no exento de peligros, florecieron las cuatro ciudades como joyas en el desierto.
S
urrounded by desert and separated by a lengthy border, there are four cities with a vigorous, modern and industrial lifestyle; these cities are unified by the same historic legacy that constitutes their heritage: Chihuahua, Ciudad Juarez, Las Cruces, and El Paso. In respect to their geographical location, we can name the Rio Grande, which descends from New Mexico, passes through Las Cruces and defines the border between El Paso, Texas, and the Doña Ana county, to then intersect the border between the United States and Mexico, separating El Paso from Ciudad Juarez, where it is given the name Rio Bravo. The Samalayuca desert reaches us from the border, in the state of Chihuahua and stretches all the way through its capital. It can be said that the main road which joined these four cities when these were not yet populated, was chosen by ambition: in 1598 a Spanish conquistador explored the territory in search for gold and precious metals, it was in that moment that a large and famous route was being built denominated Camino Real or Camino de la Plata, which began in the capital of New Spain —now Mexico City—, and culminated just beyond Santa Fe, in the state of New Mexico. Despite rocky surroundings full of dangers, the four cities were born like gems in a desert.

Chihuahua City In this region and its surroundings, various pre-Hispanic ethnic groups populated this area. It has been calculated that over one hundred of these ethnicities have enclosed this area, such as Chizos, Conchos, Guazaperos, Julimes, Pimas, Salaineros, Tarahumaras. Tepehuanes, and Tubares. These new routes allowed the establishment of the Spanish evangelic missions, however the ethnic groups constantly fought against the new inhabitants of the villas, that from the XVII and XVIII centuries had to fight for their definite settlement. The Franciscans and Jesuits where able to provide education and religious studies to the Tarahumaras , Tepehuatanes, Conchos, and other ethnic groups. These catholic orders established various catholic missions like, San Bartolome, San Pablo, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe del Paso del Rio Norte, Papagochi, Chinipinas, San Bernabe, Cauchi, Nonoya, Covachi, and Cerro Prieto , in addition to Bachiniva, Namiquipa, Baninayava, and Santa Isabel. En 1707, los pobladores de Santa Eulalia desearon una mejor ubicación y, con base en un decreto de la Corona Española donde se indicaba que todas las ciudades de la Nueva Vizcaya debían estar asentadas al costado de un río, decidieron iniciar el desarrollo de San Francisco de Cuéllar, hoy llamada ciudad de Chihuahua. Spanish needed much help from indigenous people, which helped pave the way to miscegenation, especially with the discovery of two important mining zones: Santa Rosa De Cushuriachi and Santa Eulalia. In 1707, inhabitants of Santa Eulalia wanted a better location and, with a decree from the Spanish Crown which indicated that all the cities of Nueva Vizcaya should be placed close to a river, they decided to begin the development of San Francisco de Cuéllar, which today goes by the name of Chihuahua City. Halfway through the XVIII century, native apaches from what is now New Mexico, formed alliances with the Tarahumaras to attack various Spanish settlements. The aggressions continued after the Mexican Independence, due to the fact that the federation did not have the economic capacity to protect its inhabitants, even though the attacks became more and more sporadic until the end of the XIX century. Chihuahua became the capital of Provincias Internas in which the Spanish Crown became divided into. It had an important role during the war of the Mexican Independence; for this reason, around 1811, some of its most famous leaders were killed: Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Ignacio Allende, Mariano Jimenez, and Juan Aldama. In 1824 Chihuahua became a state of the Mexican Federation and its first local constitution was promulgated in December 7, 1825. Its role was also important during the 34

Las Cruces The strenuous voyages of history shaped and gave life to the Rio Grande: farmers, soldiers, ranchers, citizens, merchants, miners, and students were found in Las Cruces, which then gave us many tales that helped us learn about the history of this lovely city. It has been discovered that 600 million years ago, the south of New Mexico was a sea full of reptiles and amphibians. This is why, according to geologists, many fossils were found at the base of the mountains and deserts from the region when the sea receded. The first explorers arrived four hundred years ago. Juan de Oñate, conquistador and governor of the New Mexico province, back then pertaining to the viceroyalty of New Spain, made a trip in 1598 to look for precious metals. His expedition traversed through the great Paso del Norte —today El Paso—, to reach just beyond the current city of Santa Fe. This route would become part of the Camino Real. The journey was harsh, several men died of thirst, mainly in a dangerous zone known as Jornada del Muerto, however, this excursion marked the starting point of the first European colonization in North America, since the pilgrims arrived to Plymouth Rock until 1620.

The Las Cruces area was uninhabited, considering that the ancient culture of the Mogollon Indians lived there around the year 1450, which left several petroglyphs scattered around the area as testimony of their existence, since not much is known about it.
La zona de Las Cruces estaba deshabitada, pues ahí vivió la antigua cultura de los indios Mogollón por el año de 1450, que dejó dispersos en la zona varios petroglifos como testimonio de su existencia, pues no se sabe mucho más de ella.
Years later after Oñate, lieutenant of the United States army, Delos Bennett Sackett, traced under the order of Pablo Melendres the area of a city. He traced 84 blocks with the use of a leather string and stakes: this is how he traced what we now know as Las Cruces, New Mexico. From then on, of the 120 people that lived in that territory started to build their houses using adobe as their main component gathered from the holes they formed on the streets. Judge Richard Campbell had to intervene and ordered them to stop making adobe on the streets and fill up the holes in the streets.

There are various legends in account to the name of Las Cruces. There is one tale, that took place during the XVIII century in which several citizens, a bishop, a priest, and a colonel of the Mexican army, a captain, four hunters, and four choir children were attacked near the Rio Grande, with only one survivor. Due to this incident, Las Cruces was given 44
the name El Pueblo del Jardin de las Cruces and La Ciudad del Jardin de Las Cruces, until finally receiving its current name of Las Cruces.

A different tale states that many crosses where raised in the area to mark in the cemeteries the victims of the various apache attacks. According to another tale, a group of travelers from Taos, New Mexico, were murdered in that place. Truly, Las Cruces has its charm: it is a city that is continuously under development, it includes New Mexico State University (NMSU), one of the best in the region, and now with Burrell College, which opened its doors in August and received an innovating proposal in the medical field in osteopathic medicine. Additionally, it hosts a variety of hospitals, hotels, minimarkets and restaurants, and it has a rich cultural activity: two museums that offer both history of the city and contemporary art found in the region. Its festivals and annual carnivals are always packed with people. In addition, Las Cruces is an ideal city for retirement and idleness, primarily preferred by those who seek a peaceful place, but with much to offer.

En El Paso existe evidencia arqueológica en Keystone Wetlands y Hueco Tanks, poblados que albergaron asentamientos humanos desde hace miles de años. A su llegada, los españoles encontraron a pueblos mansos: sumas y jumanos. Con estos tres grupos se integró la cultura mestiza. Después llegaron los indios mescaleros, quienes se establecieron por muchos años. Aquí también se construyó en 1862 una misión, la de Ysleta, un lugar histórico digno de visitarse. En sus muros se ha escrito la historia de las diversas mezclas de cultura que representan más de 300 años de la historia de Texas. En este sitio se puede observar el inigualable paisaje desértico de la región, a través de un recorrido muy disfrutado por las familias durante el verano. El Paso está asentada a orillas del Río Grande. En ella existen varios lugares interesantes para visitar, cuenta con un desierto maravilloso con una rica diversidad de flora y fauna, y con varios parques. Sus montañas se extienden a lo largo de la ciudad desde el norte y claramente la dividen en varias secciones, junto con los sectores ocupados por Fort Bliss y el aeropuerto internacional de El Paso. La más famosa es la montaña Franklin. Another one of its attractions is the University of Texas at El Paso, founded in 1914, which is one of the best Universities at the state level. We cannot leave out the most important military base Fort Bliss, located in the northeast part of the city. El Paso is often named Sun City, due to the fact that the Sun shines during 302 days during the average year, of which 83% of the hours is natural sunlight. The four gems of the desert Chihuahua, Ciudad Juarez, Las Cruces and El Paso have a history of their own, yet united by the brotherhood and close friendship of these towns, although separated by the Rio Bravo or Rio Grande. Regardless to their lifestyle, there are elements similar to the northamerican-mexican population, such as gastronomy: flour tortillas and spicy food which are present in the dining tables in the households of these four cities. Their history, customs and traditions became unified when the natives of the so called desert cultures became involved with Spanish conquistadors. In these cities, several indigenous traces can be found in addition to a catholic tradition as witnessed by the great amount of missions built in the region. Our region is one of the most important ones in the north of Mexico due to its geographical extension, diverse climate and agriculture. As a result, its history and culture have given a heritage worth of recognizing in our present to map out a better future.

s un hecho comprobado que si queremos crear economías fuertes, lograr objetivos de desarrollo sustentable y mejorar la calidad de vida de las mujeres, las familias y las comunidades, es fundamental ‘empoderarlas’ para que participen plenamente en el sector económico. Alrededor del mundo, las mujeres están destruyendo techos de cristal y demostrando que tienen todo lo necesario para ser líderes empresariales de éxito. Por esta razón, cada año, la Cámara Hispana de Comercio de El Paso, Texas, y el Centro de Negocios de Mujeres de la Frontera dedica y reconoce el gran esfuerzo de este género mediante la organización del Simposio de Mujeres de Negocios. Bajo el lema “Bailando hacia atrás y en tacones”, se desarrolla el encuentro de mujeres de negocios de todos los sectores. Este gran suceso anual, en su decimosegunda edición, es una oportunidad única para dar a conocer empresas que tienen al frente a las más prominentes mujeres de la región. Around the world, women have been breaking the ‘glass ceiling’ and have demonstrated that they possess the necessary qualities to be successful entrepreneurs. For this reason, every year, in El Paso, Texas; the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Business Border Center dedicate and recognize this gender’s enormous effort through the Women’s Business Symposium. Behind the motto “Dancing Backwards in High Heels”, we come across with business women from all industries. This marvelous annual event, holding its twelfth edition, presents a unique opportunity to meet astounding businesses that have illustrious women from the surrounding region. Moreover, besides experiencing a captivating day in between chats, food, music, and a relaxed environment; attendees assist lectures presented by prestigious people recognized worldwide, with the purpose of acquiring new knowledge about professional development and success on account of the discourse presented by the speakers.

En esta ocasión, el hotel Wyndham fue el escenario utilizado para recibir a más de 500 asistentes, quienes tuvieron la oportunidad de interactuar con 30 mujeres líderes en diversos ámbitos, quienes les brindaron útiles consejos. Además, los asistentes recibieron capacitación en diferentes temas. Este año, el simposio contó con dos importantes expositoras: Karen Kerrigan, presidente y directora del Consejo de Negocios de Pequeñas Empresas de Vienna, Virginia, así como Arcilia Acosta, Presidente de las Industrias de Construcción Carcon de Dallas. Asimismo, se organizaron dos paneles sobre temas de salud con la participación de expertas invitadas de los hospitales Providencia y Las Palmas/Hospitales Del Sol. En diferentes salas, se efectuaron cuatro seminarios de formación de la mujer sobre aplicación de la ley, etiqueta de negocios, mujeres en proceso de contratación y protección de negocios. Se tuvo presencia de más de 30 expositores y un evento de clausura muy dinámico. On this occasion, Wyndham hotel opened its doors to more than 500 attendees, who had the opportunity to interact with more than 30 empowering women from various professional fields that provided them with constructive advice. Additionally, attendees received guidance in other various subjects. This year, the symposium counted on two important speakers: Karen Kerrigan, president and director of the Business Council of Small Enterprises of Vienna, Virginia, as well as Arcilia Acosta, president of the Carcon Industrial Construction in Dallas. Likewise, two major panels were organized in relation to health issues along with the participation of professional guest speakers from different hospitals such as The Hospitals of Providence and Las Palmas/Del Sol Hospitals. Moreover, there were four seminars that took place in various rooms, which taught women about proper law implementation, business etiquette, business protection, and women who were in the process of being employed.
