F

elipa Solis is a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Tapestry 2017 Moderator Association. Ms. Solis has more than 25 years of broadcast experience having worked at KTSM TV News Channel 9, the NBC affiliate in El Paso, Texas. She currently serves as film Reviewer for KTSM TV, KOFX Radio, writes film articles for City Magazine and hosts film festivals in El Paso, Sitka, Alaska and Spokane.

Keynote Speaker Ligiah Villalobos La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon)

L

igiah Villalobos is the Writer and Executive Producer of La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon) the indie hit film and Official Selection at the Sundance Film Festival. It became the highest sale for a Spanish-language film in the history of Sundance. She was also the Head Writer on the Nick Jr. television show Go Diego! Go! and is also the writer of the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Firelight for which she won a Humanitas Prize and was produced by Alicia Keyes and Mary Martin. More recently, she co-wrote the Lifetime Movie The Real MVP, based on the true-life story of Kevin Durant’s mother produced by Queen Latifah and Shelby Stone. Villalobos has also developed projects for multiple studios and networks including NBC, ABC/Family, FX, Showtime, BET, and HBO. Her career also includes being a studio executive at the Walt Disney Company where she oversaw all television production in Latin America for five years. At the Warner Bros.TV Network Villalobos served as a Current Programming Executive where she oversaw six prime time shows including the four highest rated shows on the network. She is a contributor to Americana Magazine, The Huffington Post and the Black List Blog.

Veronica Escobar El Paso County Judge

C

ounty Judge Veronica Escobar is a native El Pasoan who has contributed to the betterment of the communit her entire adult life. She has been a strong advocate for expanding access to affordable health care for El Pasoans through her support of the El Paso County Hospital District as well as El Paso Children’s Hospital. Judge Escobar has also on modernizing county government through significant internal reforms to the organization that make it more efficient and responsive to constituents. She has also been active in addressing issues important to Border communities and has written about border policy for the New York Times. Judge Escobar is serving her second term as El Paso County Judge having previously served one term as County Commissioner for Precinct 2. Ousia D. Davis Attorney in Law

O

uisa D. Davis is an El Paso native and a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso. A graduate of the University of Denver College of Law (Strum), she has been Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas since 1991. In 1993 she joined the County Atorney’s office and in that capacity worked with victims of domestic violence, the mentally ill, abused elders, and disabled tcommunity members. She has vast experience in nonprofit management and human rights litigation. She is considered by some to be an expert in human rights advocacy and litigation, with a background in family support and civil rights. Since 2006 she has been a columnist with the El Paso Times sharing her insights on legal matters, civil rights and society.


Keynote Speaker Evelina Fernandez Luminarias

E

velina Fernandez was born and raised in East Los Angeles. She began her professional career at the Mark Taper Forum in Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit where she played Della the female lead. She is a founding member of the Latino Theater Company (LTC) in Los Angeles and has performed in the LTC’s A Mexican Trilogy: An American Story that she wrote recently. The Trilogy includes Solitude, Faith Part I, and Charity Part II. Her film and television credits include American Me, where she played opposite Edward James Olmos and A Million to Juan with Cheech Marin and Paul Rodriguez. She has had roles in Roseanne, NCIS LA and Judging Amy. As a playwright she has written numerous plays among them How Else Am I Supposed to Know I Am Still Alive, which has been produced thoughout the U.S. and adapted into an award-winning film for Universal’s Hispanic Film Project. She has received recognition for her work with an Alma Award, Golden Eagle, and Spirit Award. What makes Luminarias such an achievement, aside from its significance for Latinas is the fact that it was made for less than $1 million and funded with grassroot donations of as little as $500.

Dra. Maria de los Angeles Flores Professor Communication, UTEP

M

aria de los Angeles Flores is an AssistantProfessor of Communications at The University of Texas at El Paso. She teaches a variety of courses within the Multimedia Journalism sequence. Her research interests include cross-cultural journalism, journalism trends, political communication, and television studies. Flores has published scholarly work in English and Spanish in several international journals. Currently, she is also Research Associate for the U.S. research group of the Ibero-American Television Fiction Observatory (OBITEL), an international research project on television fiction. Flores holds a Ph.D. in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin.

Irma Victoria Montelongo

Professor Chicano/a Studies, UTEP

D

r. Irma Victoria Montelongo received her MA and Ph.D. in Borderlands History from the Unversity of Texas at El Paso. Her fields of study include Gender and Sexuality, Latin American History, U.S. History with a sub-field in Immigration Studies, and Borderlands History with a sub-field in Race and Ethnic Studies. Her research and teaching interests focus on race, class, gender, sexuality, and criminology on the U.S.-Mexico border. Dr. Montelongo is a former fellow at the Center for Collaborative Online International Learning at the State University of New York Global Center and serves as the Online Program Coordinator for the Chicana/o Studies Program at UTEP.
