LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ith the recent celebration of our first anniversary, I thought it was the best time to be grateful once again, on behalf of the entire team from Border Heritage Magazine and myself, for the preference which you, our readers, have had in honoring us with reading our magazine.

I want to make a brief summary of what this project has meant for me. Some years ago I had a great vision which filled me with courage for working and realizing what would become a great dream of mine. As many of you know, the encouragement for beginning this adventure originated in our border.

Quiero hacer brevemente una reseña de lo que ha sido para mí este proyecto. Hace algunos años tuve la visión y la gran osadía de trabajar para materializar lo que para mí significaba un gran sueño. Como muchos de ustedes saben, el ánimo de comenzar esta aventura tuvo su origen en nuestra frontera.

During this time, your servant and a team of collaborators have worked tirelessly in order to offer a product of quality. Since the beginning we made it our objective to occupy an important place in the four cities where the magazine is distributed. We are grateful to our clients and with the general community because, in only a year, we have advanced in a progressive manner.

Durante este tiempo, su servidora y el equipo de colaboradores hemos trabajado incansablemente para poder ofrecer un producto de calidad. Desde un inicio ese fue nuestro objetivo para lograr ocupar un lugar importante en las cuatro ciudades donde se distribuye la revista. Estamos muy agradecidos con nuestros clientes y con la comunidad en general porque, en tan solo un año, hemos avanzado de manera progresiva.

It has been an interesting and enjoyable challenge in working day-to-day in searching for and announcing positive aspects in a zone that has not been precisely known the world over its goodness. Our work is projecting the images of what we really are, with the value of everything in which we are rooted as a community dedicated to preserving culture and good morals; for this, we like to take our public to magical encounters with people and places where we are able to connect and identify with other dimensions. I want to extend that it is of the utmost relevance for us to emphasize the talent which lies here and makes us proud and fortunate for being born in a place so suigeneris, full of blessings and opportunities. Border Heritage is still very young; our purpose is to continue conserving the freshness in the search for a distinct and human perspective, which will allow us to keep earning your trust and transcend. Together we will keep building more bridges between our borders. Because of this and the contributions for leaving a better inheritance for our children and community, we say THANK YOU. Nuestra labor es proyectar imágenes de lo que realmente somos, del valor de todo aquello que nos arraiga como una comunidad dedicada a preservar la cultura y los buenos valores; por esto, nos gusta llevar a nuestro público a encuentros mágicos con lugares y personajes capaces de identificarnos o de conectarnos con otras dimensiones. Perseverancia, figura y pasión son algunas de las cualidades con las que debe contar un atleta y más si se trata de hacer tres disciplinas combinadas.

he triathlon is an Olympic sport which in recent years has gathered the attention of the female branch due to worldwide competitions, which are equipped with a great participation and with winners capable of obtaining results due to their dedication and perseverance. One such distinguished person from our state in this sport is Cristina Fernandez, who has been training for this multidiscipline since childhood.

l triatlón es un deporte olímpico que en los últimos años ha acaparado la atención en la rama femenil debido a las competencias en todo el mundo, que cuentan con una gran participación y con ganadoras capaces de obtener resultados gracias a su entrega y constancia. Una de las figuras de nuestro Estado destacadas en este deporte es Cristina Fernández, quien desde pequeña se ha formado para esta multi-disciplina.

“I began on a bicycle doing mountain biking, first discipline which interested me because I followed my father’s example and we practiced together. I remember he began his routine very early and we went to the mountain, here in Ciudad Juarez. I enjoyed those travels. I continued for a couple of years and from there I turned to a road bike, from age 7 to age 12; this stage was a lot of fun since I competed in the ´Chupacabritas´ category, where I had my first competition and it was what triggered my decision to continue enjoying my bicycle, above all”

“Empecé con la bicicleta haciendo ciclismo de montaña, primera disciplina en la que me interesé porque seguí el ejemplo de mi papa y lo practicamos juntos. Recuerdo que él empezaba su rutina muy temprano y nos íbamos a la montaña, aquí en Ciudad Juárez. Me encantaban esos recorridos. Continué un par de años y de ahí cambié a la bicicleta de ruta, a partir de que tenía 7 y hasta los 12 años; esa etapa fue muy divertida porque competía en la categoría ´Chupacabritas´, donde tuve mi primera competencia y ese fue el detonante para decidir si me gustaba la bicicleta, sobretodo”

“Every year, there are competitions here in Juarez, especially ´El Chupacabras´, one of the most important worldwide events for the discipline of cycling… and I was happy to sign up for my first competition of this magnitude, for which I had been training for so long and have done so every year. We left from my house to the dog track or towards the free bridge and Cristo Rey mountain; or alternatively, in El Paso we went towards Transmountain or for the mountain with the star. I also practiced at the bike-riding track here in Juarez. I spend my childhood in those places and in high school I signed for track and field; we were a very entrepreneurial team, so I began combining the two disciplines. Later I discovered I could also swim”

What’s most important is I had my family’s full support and because of that everything was so much easier. Being able to practice three disciplines --- cycling, track and field, and swimming --- was fabulous for me.”

The triathlon in Cristina’s category requires a lot of work due to the different nature of the three disciplines; an athlete of her stature requires a very organized lifestyle in regards to schedules, food and even during her rest. She has known how to maintain her routine making use of perseverance in lifestyle, something that for many would seem complicated or 15

impossible. “At the beginning it is not easy, but after doing it for so long, it became a lifestyle that is a sacrifice for many people but is a way of life for me since I was little. I remember being a chubby girl, and have always been very shy, and with the bicycle I felt a little better; afterwards I kept slimming down and I become more extroverted, and that was owing to the races and always being a part of sports.”

In August of last year Cristina competed in the Full Ironman, where you have to go a distance of 2.4 miles (3.86 Km) by swimming, 112 miles (180.25 Km) on a bicycle and 26 miles (42.2 Km) running. She played her part well, finishing the race, a most difficult feat, and she placed the name of our border in high regard.

I am very satisfied with this first triumph, among the many I wish to obtain.” The triathlon discipline has demanded much of Cristina’s spiritual strength, physical work, dedication, time and much sacrifice with regards to her habits and even among her social and family environment. Now her goal is to lead a winning team and to make the National Olympic System. Congratulations Cristina, we know you will harvest many more successes.

La luz de Juan Gabriel brillará eternamente porque cuando se nace para trascender, la inmortalidad es la recompensa.

Juan Gabriel’s light will shine eternally because when one is born to transcend, immortality is the reward.

l 28 de agosto del año en curso, la noticia de la muerte del “Divo de Juárez”, Juan Gabriel, circuló por las redes sociales y los medios convencionales. La luz del ídolo brillará eternamente porque cuando se nace para trascender, la inmortalidad es la recompensa.

ugust 28th of the present year, the news of Juan Gabriel’s death, known as: “El Divo de Juárez” (The Star of Juarez), circulated among the social and conventional media. The idol’s light will eternally shine because when one is born to transcend, immortality is the reward.

El país estaba de luto. Los mexicanos lloraban sus recuerdos, sus memorias impregnadas por las canciones de Juan Gabriel en los momentos más decisivos de sus vidas, además de situaciones divertidas que compartieron con seres queridos y hasta los bailes extravagantes que muchos imitaban cuando asistían a los conciertos. Pero también lloraban al hombre, al ser que se dedicó a hacer el bien, a ayudar a los más necesitados dándoles un hogar a pesar de que él no tuvo uno, a quien con su música impulsó sus carreras y al que los hizo divertirse en los momentos más tristes. El país lloró y seguirá su llanto por un tiempo más: no se puede olvidar fácilmente a alguien que ha marcado la vida de tantos.

The country was in mourning. The Mexicans cried his memories, memories soaked in Juan Gabriel’s songs in the most decisive moments of their lives, in addition to amusing situations they shared with loved ones and even the extravagant dances which many imitated when they attended his concerts. But they also cried for the man, the being who was dedicated to doing good, to helping others who were in need by giving them a home despite his never having one, who used his music as an impulse in their careers and made people have fun during their saddest moments. The country cried and will continue their weeping for a while longer: someone who has touched the lives of so many is not easy to forget.

Sin embargo, los mexicanos y todos los seguidores del ídolo lamentaron su partida. Algunos, como yo, escuchamos nuestras canciones favoritas interpretadas por él y evocamos imágenes que a lo mejor habíamos olvidado. Algo extraño sucede cuando muere un artista de tal magnitud. Como atraídos por la nostalgia, de pronto nos encontramos viviendo su música. No es pretensión ni mucho menos se trata de demostrar algo; simplemente no queremos dejarlo ir, queremos que se quede y la única manera de sentirnos conectados con él es a través de sus composiciones. Quienes tuvieron la oportunidad, acudieron a los homenajes organizados por algunos gobiernos, incluido el Federal, para rendirle tributo a su legado. Ciudad Juárez no pudo ser la excepción y ¡cómo serlo, si es el único lugar al que Juan Gabriel llamó hogar y a donde quería regresar para retirarse! Su deseo se cumplió: las cenizas del Divo descansan en el sitio que adoptó sin importar su verdadero origen. Una de las verdades más profundas de este ícono cultural es que amó Ciudad Juárez con toda su alma: cuando hay amor, no importa lo demás. Más de 200 mil personas se dieron cita para darle el último adiós en esta ciudad fronteriza. Fieles admiradores, muchos de ellos provenientes de diversas ciudades de México y Estados Unidos, llegaron para estar por última vez a su lado. Aunque fue de manera simbólica, lo importante es que, sin lugar a dudas,

However, Mexicans as well as everyone who was a follower of the idol regretted his passing. Some, like me, listened to our favorite songs sung by him and invoked images that we may have forgotten. Something strange happens when an artist of this magnitude dies. As if attracted by nostalgia, we suddenly find ourselves living his music. It is not pretension or much less trying to prove something; we simply do not want to let him go, we want him to remain and the only way we can feel a connection to him is through his compositions. Those who had the opportunity came to his tributes organized by some governments, including the Federal, to pay homage to his legacy. Ciudad Juarez could not be the exception and ¡how couldn’t it be, it is the one place that Juan Gabriel called home and where he wanted to return for retirement! His wish came true: the Star’s ashes rest in the place he adopted while not giving importance to his true origins. One of the most profound truths about this cultural icon is that he loved Ciudad Juarez with all his heart: when love is present, nothing else matters. Over 200 thousand people made time to say their final good-byes in this border city. Faithful admirers, a lot of them from a diversity of cities in Mexico and the United States, arrived to be at his side for the last time. Even if it was in a symbolic way, the important thing is, without a doubt, Juan Gabriel was present in spirit: none of the attendees can deny that. There was sadness, rejoicing, singing and dancing; but everyone, in their own way, celebrated his legacy.

His legacy consists of many songs with simple verses which land directly in the hearts of many; his wardrobes and lyrics.

Juan Gabriel se ha ido. Su permanencia en este mundo terminó, aunque esto sea lamentable. Sin embargo, su aportación a la cultura popular está hecha. Por eso, Juan Gabriel existirá por siempre: cuando alguien le dedique la canción “Querida” a una persona que se haya alejado; cuando cualquiera viva el desamor acompañado de “Hasta que te conocí”, “Yo no nací para amar” o “Inocente pobre amiga”; cuando uno se enamore con “Te lo pido por favor”, “Abrázame muy fuerte” o “Lentamente”; cuando tengamos que despedir a alguien con “Amor eterno” o cuando cantemos “El Noa noa” en alguna fiesta o Karaoke.

Juan Gabriel is gone. His stay in this world has ended, even if this is sad. However, his contribution to popular culture is made. That’s why Juan Gabriel will exist forever: when someone dedicates the song: “Querida” to someone they are away from; when anyone suffers a break-up in love followed by “Hasta que te conocí”, “Yo no naci para amar” or “Inocente pobre amiga”; when somebody falls in love with “Te lo pido por favor”, “Abrazame muy fuerte” or “Lamentable”; when we have to say good-bye to someone with “Amor Eterno” or when we sing “El Noa Noa” at any Karaoke party. That’s right, the lights from his stage have gone out and will forever be in the minds of any person who has enjoyed his songs, celebrating his legacy. See you soon, Alberto Aguilera. Between the capital city and the most emblematic archaeological site of Peru we find an interesting tour of adventures, scenery and flavors.

city with much history and traditions is undoubtedly Lima, located in South America on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. The capital of Peru is one of Latin America’s most populated cities, with 8 million inhabitants. The plazas, temples, museums and large houses are a testimony to the important colonial period, having developed since its foundation in the year 1535, 481 years ago, by the Spanish, who named it “The City of Kings”. We were able to visit this important city with its great cultural richness, appreciate their customs and sites of interest, in addition to savoring its delicious cuisine. The weather during the month of July is fresh; it reminded us of the beginning of the winter season in our land of origin. Humidity is present due to the ocean’s proximity and a cold air blows from the cloudy mountains in Lima’s winter season. We were surprised by the modern and cosmopolitan urban sector, with an important tourist infrastructure known worldwide, this metropolis which is the country’s political, cultural and financial center. Temples and churches are some of the jewels of architecture in this country. During the few days of our stay in Lima, we were able to visit the Church of Our Lady of Pilar, which to this day is frequently called upon for weddings, baptisms and other events due to its stateliness. We had the opportunity to be invited to a wedding in this elegant scenery, the illumination in accordance with the event and scented with adornments of candles and white flowers; however the grand altar was the most impressive because it was framed with a colonial altarpiece from the 18th century, made from carved wood and beautifully worked in the baroque style, which was brought, as they explained, from the San Jose de Nazca Hacienda. The following day we went to visit Cuzco, a small and refreshing settlement with traditional sites like houses with inclined roofs, stone roads and people dressed in wool attire very characteristic of the region. We enjoyed the variety of the place’s gastronomy, exotic for us, in surprising flavors: we tried ceviche with coconut, the quínoa (or quinua), llama meat and a yellow-colored spicy sauce called ají. The Peruvian ceviches are incomparable, as they are served with an accompaniment of different salads, all delicious.

We encountered the women of Cuzco, the ‘cuzqueñas’, who showed us the working and dyeing of wool at an admirable textile crafting center. It was interesting to learn how the working materials are sheep wool or alpaca, the root of a native plant called saqta which serves as an ecological detergent, warm water and clay recipients for painting the material in the desired color. We learned that for dyeing they utilize plants, roots, moss as well as parasites. We were able to observe how, with a piece of the cactus plant --- much like the ones in our desert ---, some small parasites white in color fall apart in their hands; afterwards, they add lemon to determine the color, which transformed the white into an intense red in mere seconds, like an act of magic.

Cuzco is an obligated stop in order to go to the most emblematic and marvelous places in Peru: the archaeological site of Machu Picchu, located approximately 80 kilometers from Cuzco, surrounded by the river Urubamba and the Andean summits. One can travel there in a tourist train and approach the sanctuary by bus or on foot. To get there, we used a winding dirt road, where little by little we felt the lack of oxygen, and with good reason, since we found ourselves at over 7,000 feet high (almost 2,500 meters above sea level). A tea made of natural cocaine leaf, a usual remedy against altitude sickness or ‘soroche’, helped us to relax and regain our strength in order to appreciate the impressive view of the unusual constructions which defy the heights, built by the ancient Incas in a zone surrounded by mountains, particular for being aligned in a vertical plane. What was special about this celebration was that many of the workers were wearing typical clothing from different parts of the Mexican Republic such as Jalisco, Chiapas and Veracruz, and among these costumes, the Charro was not missing.

na alegre convivencia entre amigos se realizó con el propósito de promover y apoyar la reelección del Sheriff Richard D. Wiles en El Paso, Texas. La propietaria de la joyería Ben Bridge, Elizabeth Sinclair, y su equipo de colaboradores fueron los anfitriones de este evento en el que a su vez, reconocieron la carrera del oficial Wiles, quien por casi 35 años ha pertenecido a diversas corporaciones policiacas. Vino, queso y exquisitos bocadillos, acompañados de buena música, se ofrecieron para el deleite del selecto grupo de invitados. Con palabras de agradecimiento, el sheriff Wiles hizo un resumen de su destacada trayectoria iniciada en El Paso en 1982. Los invitados a este convivio respaldaron la permanencia del Sheriff entre aplausos y buenos deseos. Wiles fue criado y educado en El Paso, Texas, donde se graduó de Andress High School en 1979. Se unió al Departamento de Policía en 1982 y ascendió

El Paso, TX., where he graduated from Andres High School in 1979. He joined the El Paso Police Department in 1982 and he quickly rose to leadership positions such as police officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy director and was named head of police of 2004. In December of 2007, Sheriff Wiles had retired from the police department in order to get involved with the County Sheriffs office, and after being chosen he took the position in 2009.

he Juarez Natural Gas International Marathon has placed itself as one of the most important sports events in the country, since it has been the first in the history of Chihuahua to be certified and officially approved by the Mexican Athletics Federation, A.C. (Federación Mexicana de Atletismo A.C.) (FMAA), The International Association for Road Races and Marathons (Asociación Internacional de Maratones y Carreras de Ruta) (AIMS) and the International Association of Federations for Athletics (Asociación Internacional de Federaciones de Atletismo) (IAAF).

l Maratón Internacional Gas Natural de Juárez se ha posicionado como uno de los eventos deportivos más importantes en el país, ya que ha sido el primero en la historia de Chihuahua en estar certificado y homologado por la Federación Mexicana de Atletismo A.C. (FMAA), la Asociación Internacional de Maratones y Carreras de Ruta (AIMS) y la Asociación Internacional de Federaciones de Atletismo (IAAF).

ctubre es el mes en el que se fomentan programas integrales de lucha contra el cáncer de mama a nivel mundial, implementando estrategias de prevención y detección oportuna con base en la autoexploración y mastografía. Por esta razón, Yadira Burciaga, la tienda de accesorios Brighton y Moonlight Bar and Grill unen voluntades para concientizar y ayudar a la comunidad que padece esta enfermedad. A beneficio de la Fundación Rio Grande, a cargo de los diseñadores de modas como Megan Fullerton, Vanessa Ramirez y Brides and Social, se ofreció un atractivo desfile de modas con el objetivo de recabar fondos. El salón del Campo de Golf de Horizon City, con el mejor servicio y calidad,

fue la sede de este evento de elegancia y distinción donde bellas modelos lucieron singulares vestuarios, joyería y maquillaje. En el desayuno la mayoría de los asistentes portó alguna prenda de color rosa como símbolo conmemorativo de este padecimiento, además de convivir y aplaudir este primer evento en apoyo a la mujer. Invitados especiales como Martha Vera, cónsul honoraria de España, Estela Casas de la televisora KVIA Canal 7, entre otras personalidades, compartieron su testimonio para dar esperanza a otras personas que lamentablemente han sido afectadas con esta enfermedad que ha cambiado sus vidas. La Fundación Rio Grande tiene 20 años sirviendo a la comunidad para reducir el impacto humano y económico de cáncer en los habitantes de El Paso a través del apoyo financiero y el desarrollo de programas eficaces para los pacientes y sus familias.

The Rio Grande Foundation has existed for 20 years in service to the community to reduce the human and economic impact of cancer in the El Paso residents through financial support and the development of efficient programs for patients with cancer and their families.

State tournament champions

e are pleased to share the exciting news that our volleyball team won the state tournament and are champions in the 2A category. The event was held in San Antonio, TX; classifying the tournament with a no. 4 rank, during their first game the team defeated Houston Texas Christian School, in the semifinal game defeated the favorite team, Poetry Classical Christian School, ranked as #1. In the final they faced the team

Camila Navarro fue la jugadora más valiosa del torneo, además de ser parte del primer equipo de todo el estado. ¿WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS? They are dilated veins that might appear blue, red or flesh-colored. Often they rise above the skin of the legs and appear to be braided cables. Varicose veins are produced when the valves which carry blood from the legs to the heart cease their function, allowing for the blood to accumulate in the legs. There are a series of factors which contribute to the forming of varicose veins and in the production of chronic insufficiency in the veins, such as in pregnancy and heredity. In time pain or symptoms such as swelling in the legs, damage to the skin or ulcers can be found. CHRONIC VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY (CVI) It is a progressive condition -- which worsens in time – and affects the veins. Surgeon doctor, Alfredo Gurmendi , who has practiced close to 200 surgeries in this hospital complex, describes the problem of having ulcers in the legs, which is not always arterial: “Varices are a very common ailment in people with tired feet, swelling and itching in the legs; they are at risk of developing this condition by spending much time on their feet”. SIMPLE AND QUICK HIGHLY TECHNICAL TREATMENT “Previously, the process for curing varicose veins was more complicated: consisting or performing a major and painful surgery. Presently, there are a series of options for treatments minimally invasive for those who suffer CVI”. “While the treatments with compression tights are often first prescribed for controlling the symptoms, there are a variety of methods which can really treat ailing veins to eliminate varicose, improve the quality of life for the patient and stop the growth of the problem”, concludes Dr. Gurmendi. ENDOVENOUS ALBATION THERAPY The thermal endovenous albation is a minimally invasive treatment which consists of the insertion of a thin and flexible tube, called a catheter, in an ailing vein to seal it using heat. The blood which will normally return to the heart through this vein will be transferred to other veins which substitute this function. In time, the treated vein is reduced and absorbed by the body. In comparison to surgical options, such as vein stripping with ligation, are the result of the endovenous albation reduce the pain and recovery is quicker.

ABLACIÓN ENDOVENOSA La ablación térmica endovenosa es un tratamiento mínimamente invasivo que consiste en la inserción de un tubo delgado y flexible, llamado catéter, en una vena enferma para sellarla utilizando calor.
