pectacularly positioned in the heart of the Daintree at Cape Tribulation and yet walking distance from a secluded yet dramatic ocean beach Alkira is an architectural masterpiece. As though floating on the water which surrounds it, the home rises up out of the ground and displays an extraordinarily unique marriage between form and function. Perfectly suited to the eternally mild climate that this region affords the central living areas connect seamlessly with nature. A large open air living area connects the 5 ensuited bedroom wings which protrude elegantly out over the lake which envelopes the home and feature timber lined rooms and Chillagoe marble bathrooms. The kitchen is subtly designed and yet thoughtfully appointed for serious entertaining. There is a plunge pool for a convenient dip as an alternative to the lake or nearby ocean beach. A stroll through the grounds offers a myriad of plant life and stunning scenery. Designed by local architect Charles Wright, this amazing home is ideal for those looking for a private retreat. Close enough to the necessary amenities and yet completely private and secluded for absolute relaxation. The current custodians of this magnificent property are looking to hand over the reigns to those who will understand and completely appreciate what has been created here. A family or individual who will cherish its breathtaking surrounds and fall in love with its aesthetic.

I
have been lucky enough to drive a Ferrari 458 Italia Spider on the race track. That is not to say I was pushing this incredible motor car to its limits. Even though I was driving much faster than I normally would on the open road, in this environment all I was really doing was tootling along. It was enough to get the adrenaline flowing of course, even though I realised that I was not going to be challenging Sebastian Vettel or Kimi Raikkonen on the Scuderia Ferrari just yet. The 458 Italia is fast, responsive, easy to handle and incredibly exhilarating. The 458 Speciale, the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 powered sports car in the company’s history, even more so. Until now! The launch of the Ferrari 488 GTB promised something extra ‘speciale’ then if the car was going to prove itself even better than the sublime 458. And so it has turned out. Ferrari first launched a mid/rear-engined V8 berlinetta in 1975 with the 308 GTB. Forty years on the 488 GTB, Gran Truism Berlinetta is a car producing unparalleled performance figures. The brand new 3902 cc V8 turbo engine is capable of a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph), reaching 100 km/h from a standing start (0-62mph) in just three seconds, and pushing on to 200 km/h (124 mph) in only 5.3 seconds more - 8.3 seconds from nought to 200 km/h! The 488 GTB is incredibly fast and powerful. It also has a sound to match; you can hear it coming from a long way off and what a pure automotive note it strikes. Whether it was the 18th Century French writer and philosopher Voltaire, who first said, “With great power comes great responsibility”, or, as some have attributed it to, Spiderman’s uncle in the Marvel Comics, it matters not. It is a quotation that defines this automobile. As well as producing a lightening-bolt fast, screaming thoroughbred stallion, Ferrari has coupled this brilliant, razor-sharp powertrain with vehicle dynamics and subsystems which means that the power can be controlled and driven
10
w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u
by normal competent drivers. This prancing horse can be reined in, driven by those whose skills do not match those of Vettel or Raikkonen. Not only is the 488 GTB exceedingly fast, it is also a car that is marvellously efficient. It produces new records for a roadgoing Ferrari, but this has been achieved not through increased power. The secret is in the optimisation of combustion, ignition timing, oil pressure, the reduction of friction, internal engine fluiddynamics and zero turbo lag. The aerodynamics of the 488 GTB are also revolutionary. The drag co-efficient is the best ever for a homologated Ferrari road car. Even though drag is reduced the downforce achieved by the 488 is 50% higher than that of its predecessor the 458: even though it is more powerful it sticks to the road better! This has been brought about by a Formula One inspired double-spoiler at the front and a central Aero Pillar managing the powerful air flows. The 488 also has an innovative aerodynamic underbody and a large rear diffuser which with its variable flap geometry can balance downforce (closed for cornering and braking) and drag reduction (open on the straights or when putting your foot down). There is more, like the new blownspoiler and base bleed air intakes; suffice to say it is all designed to keep you and your car on the ground instead of leaping into the air like a jet plane! Everything about this Ferrari is beyond the comprehension of most of us and what we understand about cars. The figures are so stupendous that they defy belief. This includes the gearbox with Variable Torque Management providing gear changes normally associated with the professional track: six seconds to go from standstill in first to the limiter in fourth gear. It all needs to be harmonious and to achieve this Ferrari’s excellent dynamics are aided and abetted by the new Side Slip Control System, SSC2 integrated with F1-Trac and E-Diff along with bespoke software adjusting sensors in the SCM3

magnetorheoligical damping system giving better control and bump absorption. Most of our cars have ESP and ABS, but in this case these assists are taken to the very highest level as is the new Brembo Extreme Design braking system. The 488 GTB ’s stop distances are 9% shorter than those of the 458. But enough of the science and acronyms. It is a Ferrari. What does it look like? The answer is, it looks fantastic. More aggressive and sportier than previous Ferrari V8 cars, it still maintains the family styling that is synonymous to the marque. Of course its looks are not just the aesthetic whim of a design team wearing Armani suits, Tod’s shoes and sipping espressos in Maranello. The Ferrari Styling Centre’s work is brought about by coupling form and function. The 488 GTB’s sculptured flanks which are reminiscent of its 308 GTB forerunner, house large air intake scallops serving a serious purpose. It all works conjoining external beauty, aerodynamics, speed, power and importantly, safety. And, inside the cockpit? Yes, it has the sporty feel associated with the rest of this vehicle. At the same time though this is a cabin tailored to the pilot’s needs in a car that can be used everyday. It is after all, a road going car that can be enjoyed on the track rather than an out and out racer, even though its race DNA is there for all to see. The quilted seats are fabulous and give the nod to the ‘chairs’ of the legendary Daytona, Dino or 365. The Ferrari 488 GTB is a completely new car, one of the most exciting to have left the Factory in many a year. This is not to decry its more recent relatives but the 488 GTB carries the lineage of the great post-war Ferraris into the 21st Century, with no little excitement, a great degree of aplomb and an enormous amount of technical innovation. It truly embodies all the qualities that Ferrari is world famous for and encapsulates modern thinking, design and all the accomplishments of the digital age in which we live, whilst still providing the most visceral driving pleasure. It even has a seven year warranty/maintenance programme and is available in a unique new colour, Rosso Corsa Metallizato. U nique Luxur y

Burberry Creative head Christopher Bailey is crediting the British fashion house’s decision to embrace new digital and mobile media applications as a key plank in helping it connect with its customers. Widely recognised as the first fashion brand to sell products through the Twitter Buy Now functionality a year ago, Burberry continues to lead the way when it comes to digital and social networking capabilities with a recent trial to stream two of its new season fashion shows via Snapchat and Periscope generating what the brand called its “best ever consumer engagement”. The performance came as a result of Burberry’s decision to stream two fashion shows earlier this year, resulting in an astounding 100 million impressions worldwide. Burberry has a mobile offering the envy of many luxury retailers to the point where it is believed that a fifth of Burberry’s digital sales are now collect-in-store while an additional 25 percent of sales are made on iPads. And while we’re on the subject of sales: those in the market for a new pair of glasses or sunglasses need not concern themselves with trying to locate a new favourite brand with news Burberry has extended its existing licensing agreement with eyewear manufacturer Luxxotica Group for another decade. Burberry’s agreement with Luxottica, which also produces and distributes the eyewear collections of a range of fashion labels including Giorgio Armani, Bulgari, Chanel, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana, DKNY, Polo Ralph Lauren, Prada, Michael Kors, Starck Eyes, Tiffany and Versace, runs until 2025.

Prada Prada’s march into the Middle East has continued with a new store opening in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia. The store, the first for the brand in the country’s commercial capital, was designed by the global group’s go-to architect, Roberto Baciocchi, whose handiwork can be seen across several projects for the Prada Group already – in particular the brand’s property portfolio across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The space, inside the prestigious The Boulevard mall, blends into the mall’s modern composition with a white metal curtain, flanked by two entrances, windows and light boxes. Covering a total area of 335 square metres on a single level, the new store houses the women’s and men’s leather goods, accessories and footwear collections. Featuring green fabric-clad walls and crystal tables, the women’s area is embellished with white and black marble flooring and green velvet sofas while the display counters are defined by coloured saffiano leather detailing. The area housing the footwear collection is characterised by green fabricclad walls with cut-in alcoves exalting the product display. The space devoted to men features more masculine finishes including marble flooring and ebony-clad walls with black metal display units hosting the leather goods, accessories and footwear collections. Wood and metal counters and green ostrich leather sofas complete the setting. Other locations targeted by the brand for store openings in recent months include: Maui, Panama, Johannesburg, Salzburg and Wuhan in China.

Louis Vuitton The famed multi-colour monogram which for years has been one of the key signatures of the Louis Vuitton collections will no longer be seen following the news the French fashion house has ended its 13-year relationship with Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami. At the invitation of Vuitton’s former designer Marc Jacobs, Murakami begin collaborating with the fashion house in 2002, the result of which saw him produce an amazing multicolore monogram artwork that Vuitton released as a print on a series of handbags and accessories. The design, which incorporated the fashion house’s signature monogram, was a huge commercial success and led to the collection becoming the “it bag” of the mid-2000s. As a result of this success, the Murakami-created prints were heavily copied in the years following with Vuitton forced to undertake many noteworthy lawsuits over the past decade in defence of the copyrighted works. Stating only that the brand would like to “move forward”, Vuitton began removing the collection from store shelves in July. Having said goodbye to the Jacobs’ era at Vuitton, his replacement Nicolas Ghesquière has been busy selecting old friends and new to shoot the fashion house’s Fall/Winter 2015 campaign. Continuing the collection’s theme centred around art and travel, Ghesquière paired with photographers Juergen Teller and Bruce Webber for the third time to shoot the promotional spots whose locations included an architect’s house in Barcelona and a private airport in Miami. American actress Jennifer Connelly and 26-year-old Swedish actress Alicia Vikander joined models Freja Beha, Lya Kebade and Julia Merklebach in the campaign, which Ghesquière said embodied the “multiple facets of the Louis Vuitton woman”.

Christian Dior A project four years in the making finally come to its natural conclusion as Dior opened the doors of its newest boutique in the heart of Seoul’s Cheongdam-dong district recently. Architect Christian de Portzamparc was chosen to create the space and first began work on the project in 2011 by delving into the Christian Dior archives. The first French architect to be awarded the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1994, de Portzamparc was also behind the LVMH Tower in New York and the Chai sur la Colline winery for Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion. Inspired by the precision with which Monsieur Dior constructed his gowns, de Portzamparc attempted to incorporate this into the building’s exterior by designing a building featuring eleven white sails falling in soft folds, emulating the plain “toiles’ from which Dior sculpted his designs. The building itself features six floors of exquisite Dior product including a dedicated accessories space, the first ever exclusive Dior Homme boutique as well as dedicated area for women’s ready-towear, watches and jewellery. The fourth floor of the building features an art gallery with its private salons displaying a selection of artworks chosen by Dior. Opening onto a terrace on the top floor is a Dior Café with a menu composed by French baker Pierre Hermé, who has been dubbed the “Picasso of pastry”.

Miu Miu The skills of Miu Miu muse Stacy Martin clearly extend a lot further than merely acting with the French-English actress named as the face of the fashion house’s first fragrance. Fans of the brand will recognise Martin as a longtime favourite of the house, with the 24-year-old stunner having already featured prominently in Miu Miu’s Fall 2014 campaign. The campaign was shot by high profile American fashion photographer Steven Meisel, a favourite of the house of Prada and the man responsible for each Prada photography shoot since 2004. Miuccia Prada’s signature is fully realised across the latest addition to the fashion house’s product collection with the brand of Prada helping design the attractive flacon. It has been a long 18-month wait for fans of the brand that first learnt of the debut of the fragrance back in early 2014. Its official launch was celebrated in July with the French fashion house staging an exclusive cocktail party in a Parisian nightclub. Timed to coincide with the unveiling of the brand’s 2016 Croisière collection, the launch included an exclusive dinner, fashion show and musical performances. The perfume is expected to hit stores this month and will be available in 30, 50 and 100ml Eau de Parfum bottle varieties.

O
nce upon a time, before taking up the life of a penurious writer, I worked for one of the richest men in the world. On one occasion he was describing his ‘boat’ to me. “Oh,” I said, “that sounds like such and such.” To which he replied, “Yes, it is the sister ship, but ours has two funnels”. His ‘boat’ was as close to an ocean liner that you can get without it being the QE2. Further evidence to the vast wealth accumulated by this man’s family over the last century was that he did not just own a property in a hillside town in Tuscany, but actually owned the whole town - every building, every house, lock stock and barrel, and probably the hill it was all built upon too.
as it once was, even in Italy), it is the lighthouses which are to be offered to the market first.
A recent announcement by the Agenzia del Demanio (part of the Ministry of Economy and Finance), means though that there is now an opportunity for all of us (except, perhaps this penniless scribbler) to own a little piece of old Italy. The Agenzia, working with local authorities and the various Ministries concerned is putting up for sale a list of State owned assets in various areas of the country, many in places of outstanding natural beauty. Foremost amongst this group of old buildings and State-owned properties is a clutch of lighthouses for which one can now purchase a fifty year lease. Of course we are not talking still working lighthouses but older ones that have been replaced by modern technology and are new defunct along Italy’s extensive coastline. Even if they are no longer working entities but now part of Italy’s heritage there is still of course a maintenance cost involved. And therein lies the rationale behind the decision to turn these marvellous old constructions into private dwellings or over to commercial concerns.
Already there has been considerable interest shown for the project with some 420 parties keen to be involved in the lighthouse renaissance. It is an idea that will surely work and like all good ideas one that is not new. On several occasions I have stayed at a remarkable hotel right on the very sea’s edge of the Adriatic coast in Le Marche. Situated as it is, its magnificent position comes by virtue of the fact that it was originally a fortress. The Hotel Fortino Napoleonico was built in 1811 by Eugene de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy. Eugene was the son of Josephine (she of “Not tonight” fame) and thereby the stepson and adopted child of Napoleon Bonaparte, the first Emperor of France. It was constructed to defend the southern side of the important port of Ancona and support the blockade of the Royal Navy and British trade. The lantern-shape of the fortress is typically Napoleonic, and having fallen into ruin in more peaceful times, was restored and converted into an hotel in 1969. It is a magical place and there is an undoubted romance in staying in a spot with such history, built as it is from the recycled stones of the long-lost Benedictine monastery of nearby Santa Maria di Portonovo - the hot summer sun kept at bay by the thickness of the defensive walls with sunlight allowed in through the embrasures.
Italy, whilst not yet in the same dire economic straits as near neighbours Greece or even Spain, is however having a little trouble balancing its books. The hope is that by offering leases on these historic assets to private investors that some two billion euros will be raised over the next two years. Out of a total of 686 properties identified, including disused army barracks, fortresses, watch towers and convents (in the 21st Century religion is not as strong
There are eleven lighthouses in the first tranche. Seven of these ‘fari’ are owned by the State including three on Sicily, one on Ischia in the Bay of Naples and one on the remote beauty of the Tremiti Islands in the Adriatic Sea. The other four ‘fari’ are owned by the Ministry of Defence, of which two are on the Island of Giglio. Having recently seen the appalling hulk of the Costa Concordia which is now undergoing salvage work in the port of Genoa after its tragic sinking, one may be forgiven for thinking that maybe functioning lighthouses are still required on the island.
Italy might need the cash, but when it does this sort of thing it does it correctly. Whilst this is definitely a money making exercise there have been precedents. The Hotel Faro Capo-Spartivento U nique Luxur y

was built by the Italian Navy in 1856, and since 2008 is a most luxurious place that its former inhabitants would have swooned at the softness of its beds and quality of its wine cellar. Having just returned from Sardinia I can vouch for the natural beauty of this large island. Its architectural beauty has also been preserved. In the development from safety icon to luxe hotel, the conversion of Lo Spartivento took place under the guidance of an architect sent by Ministry of Culture to oversee the project. When I first heard of the Agenzia’s lighthouse project I was somewhat aghast: Italy to sell off prized historic assets smacked of desperation. Of course there was always going to be more to the story than attention grabbing headlines. And so it proved to be. Indeed what the Angenzia del Demanio is actually doing is helping to ensure that the country’s rich architectural heritage is preserved for future generations. In a country loaded with such history spanning over two thousand years one forgets that the more recent past as well as the ancient past can need preserving too. With so many cultural sites and heritage buildings, the State can only do so much. Organisations such as the Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano, Italy’s National Trust can only look after so many important, but not
‘Coliseum-great’ buildings such as the glorious Villa Balbianello on the shores of Lake Como. This gorgeous place is recognisable to many who have never visited Italy by its appearances in films such as ‘A Month by the Lake’ (1995) starring Vanessa Redgrave and Edward Fox, James Bond’s 2006 caper ‘Casino Royale’ and even one of the ‘Star Wars’ blockbusters. It is now time for the private sector to play its part. No doubt, Italy being Italy there will be some drama and delays , but not doubt too, Italy being Italy, the outcome will be magnificent. The idea has already worked in North America, the UK and even in Australia, where Bronte House and its gardens is leased for $1 a year rent in return for the tenant’s making good on the $200,000 annual maintenance bill. It will work in Italy, after all it is the spiritual home of the lighthouse. Centuries ago along the Straits of Messina beacons were lit on the south-west coast of Italy and the east coast of Sicily - Greek mythology tells us of ships passing through the narrow channel wary of the monstrous sea-nymph Scylla on one side and the destructive Charybdis on the other. Lighthouses have saved many a poor soul at sea and now will help to save Italy’s ailing economy. U nique Luxur y

uilt in 1860 by Richard Mutton for the Webb family, Mutton Falls was originally used as a farmhouse and dairy and has a wonderfully colourful history. More recently, the homestead has been lovingly restored with careful consideration and for several years it was utilized as a bed and breakfast and events space. Its current owners have added many modern luxuries to the home including beautiful furnishings, heating, watering and security systems and used it as much loved country retreat. Set on 1 acre of country gardens, Mutton Falls continues to envelope its visitors in beauty. The main homestead features 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (both with claw foot baths). There is now a wonderfully cosy lounge and enormous fireplace where the old kitchen once stood. The old dairy now set up as a barn and used by the current owners as a wonderful spot for parties with friends; birthdays and the odd super competitive table tennis championship play off! There is also an old shed converted to a one car lock-up garage and workshop; a chook pen and a well that provides additional water for the beautiful country garden. The property is less than 50 metres from the Fish River and a magnificent row of Poplars announce its position and provide a picturesque outlook from the property. Mutton Falls, located in Tarana, is 2.5 hours ftom the Sydney CBD and is now seeking some new custodians to add their own history and colour.

ocated just 15 minutes from the beaches in Byron Bay and seven minutes to beautiful Bangalow on a leafy country road in the sought after hamlet of Possum Creek, this wonderful property oozes character and charm. A rare opportunity now exists to acquire a piece of local history. Run as a school from 1911 until 1961, the old school house had been converted and, until recently, run as the wonderfully popular Liliana’s Cafe and Gallery; attracting locals and visitors in their droves to enjoy perfectly prepared local produce. Approved for five-day trading and over 184 sqm of roofed area, this building would also make a great training facility, yoga space or gallery. Or, it could easily be converted back to additional accommodation (STCA). The main house, built by the current owners sits perched on a leafy ridge overlooking Possum Creek below. It features four bedrooms (or three plus study) and a large yet cosy lounge with separate kitchen dining area opening onto shaded verandas that make for seamless indoor-outdoor entertaining and of course relaxing! Downstairs there is a large laundry, ample storage, a media room or possible additional training space and a large four-car lock-up garage. Across the lawn is a very sweet one-bedroom guest cottage over two levels - also overlooking Possum Creek. Having poured several years of labour and love into this wonderful property the owners are looking to relocate to Brisbane to enjoy their grand children. Liliana’s would have to be one of the most beautifully presented properties in the area, it awaits your inspection and is looking for an owner ready to put their own touch on the place whilst adding to its long and colourful history.

P
arts of Marrakech seem frozen in time. By all reports the train to the Morrocan imperial city hasn’t changed since the 1969 hit song Marrakech Express, the markets carry on the tradition of snake charmers and acrobats, and the orange-red adobe ramparts of the historic old town stand as they did in the 12th century. What has changed in Marrakech though is the level of luxury on offer for tourists – a move that played a big part in the city ranking number one destination on this year’s Travellers Choice list compiled by online service Trip Advisor. Comfort is king. Modern highways have replaced dusty tracks and bumpy roads. Street hawkers now beckon instead of pester. Most delightful is the growing number of chic and contemporary riads, traditional Moroccan homes with central courtyards now doubling as first class accommodation. Leading tour companies such as World Journeys and Prior By Arrangement can now offer guests these exclusive riads along with palatial Morrocan hotels such as La Sultana and Royal Mansour. The new breed of boutique riads sport richly decorated interiors and brightly painted walls, many dominated by the ‘Majorelle blue’ which is renowned in this part of the world. The blue is named after artist Jacques Majorelle, one of hundreds of creatives drawn to Morocco and Marrakech over the years. He arrived in the 1920s and established the gardens that were to bear his name, painting most of the fixtures, from fountains to archways, the same blue he saw in the Berber architecture. There are several major public gardens in Marrakech but the Majorelle are the most popular and strikingly unique, not only for their beauty but also their history. In 1966 they were almost destroyed by a hotel developer, before being spotted and rescued from the wrecking ball by none other than late fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent as
well as his partner Pierre Berge. The Majorelle is now tended by 200 gardeners, and the site often hired by international travellers for parties and weddings. Australia’s foremost Morocco travel expert Carol Prior has organized many such events for travellers since starting her upmarket tour company Prior By Arrangement in 1972. So bewitched by Marrakech, she resides there almost year round running her business, and remembers the days when such private soirees occurred spontaneously. “Back in the early 70s when I started there were these exotic wonderful ex-pats in Marrakech,” she said. “One was English nobility and wealthy enough to own a home adjacent to one of these gardens. After dinner parties there we’d all walk through the gate of his backyard with our drinks in hand and have the gardens to ourselves.” Other such quiet leafy spots include the ancient walled garden holding the early mosaic graves at the Saadian Tombs, and the Arset El-Mamoun Gardens surrounding the famous grand hotel La Mamounia. Established in the 18th century the El-Mamoun still bloom with orange and olive groves and flowerbeds. Just as well these gardens still exist. They are among the few places tourists can seek respite from Marrakech’s hectic but wonderful visual onslaught. The central part of the city (medina) is filled with markets (souks) running through a maze of alleyways. Hawkers sell everything from bowls and jewellery to snails and kaftans as well as the timelessly clichéd belly-dancing outfits. But the souk for which Marrakech is renowned is found in the city’s main square Djemma-el-Fna. A cacophony of colour, noise and action Djemma-el-Fna is a spectacle to behold. Shop if you must, but the street performers will U nique Luxur y

demand attention. Snake charmers, monkeys, dancers, acrobats and more gather like a disjointed circus troupe competing for onlooker’s dollars. Prior By Arrangement takes clients to a Parisian style café overlooking the square giving them the chance to dip in and out of the activity as they wish. Watching the market lights twinkle on as dusk falls on the city is one of Marrakech’s most charming sights. Markets being what they are, many tour operators like Ms Prior’s arrange private shopping tours to stores selling genuine artefacts plus designer boutiques. Visible from almost everywhere in the city is the tower of the Koutobia mosque, the largest in Marrakech. While not possible to go inside, walking the perimeter offers a good view. Culture obsessed travellers must visit Maison Tiskiwin, a private house owned by a Dutch anthropologist filled with crafts and arts from southern Morocco and the Sahara. Included in the list of Marrakech’s attractions though is also where you choose to stay, and selection so wonderful it is worth splitting time between riads and extravagant hotels. Riad Goloboy is particularly on-trend, typical of the modern riad with its electric blue walls and art filled rooms. Ms Prior recommends Dar Les Cigognes to her guests, a top boutique property with only 11 rooms and its own spa and massage therapist. It is also close to main attractions and affords views of The Royal Palace from its terrace. When it comes to hotels The Royal Mansour epitomises Moroccan opulence. Décor is so immaculate simply walking its corridors makes anyone feel like royalty. The ever-popular Villa des Orangers is a picture of elegance. Built within a former palace, it now offers a rooftop pool above lovely rooms. Book a suite with a private rooftop terrace as the Orangers is high enough to capture views across the medina to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. The 45-minute road trip to the Atlas Mountains is part of the Marrakech experience. People come here not only for the cool high altitude climate and scenery but also vineyards, gourmet produce and the famous Berber town of Ouirgane. Close by Ouirgane is the popular boutique riad Domaine Malika, an exclusive lodge in a classic Moroccan setting of pine trees and olive groves. Its seven rooms and living quarters are elegantly conservative, sitting around a landscaped pool in which to float and gaze at the surrounding peaks. Adventurous types can book into the stunning, palatial Kasbah Tamadot (Berber for ‘soft breeze’). Owned by inimitable entrepreneur Richard Branson, he bought it in the late 90s and spent millions creating a heavenly haven for friends and visitors alike. Cohorts he has entertained here include Peter Gabriel and Mick Jagger, and when in residence Branson often surprises paying guests by turning up at the dinner table. He likes the idea that Kasbah Tamadot is both one of his private homes as well as open to anyone (with the means) to enjoy his creativity. Guests can avail themselves of the same luxuries as Branson’s famous friends, from the enormous pool to sipping cocktails on one of the many terraces. Kasbah Tamadot may be another modern addition to these parts, yet its whimsical beauty expertly captures the Marrakech mystique continuing to entice visitors from all over the world. U nique Luxur y

MUST EAT TANJIA The tanjia is Marrakech’s version of the traditional Moroccan tagine. Tanjia is prepared in a greek urn-shaped pot, into which is placed any meat, but usually lamb, along with mostly salt, pepper, preserved lemon, cumin, olive oil and water. The pot or ‘tanjia’ is then sealed with brown paper and string and cooked in the embers of a hammam for five hours or so. Traditionally, the men drop the tanjia off at the local hammam (bath house) on their way to work. The pot slow cooks all day in the embers of the fires heating the hammam and then the men pick it up on their way home. Restaurants all over Marrakech serve the dish.

GROW YOUR OWN Paul West and River Cottage Australia By Sarah Swan

A
ffable, charming and quite, well, blokey…in a good way, his name is Paul West and he hails from yonder – a life of meat and 3 veg dinners as a kid growing up in the Hunter Valley of NSW where his parents ran the Murrurundi Trading Post. He’s the kind of guy who says “G’day”. In his twenties he progressed to the life of a wwoofer (Willing Workers On Organic Farms). Paul’s first wwoofing experience on a farm in Northern Tasmania opened his eyes to ‘real’ food via the simple bite of a pear picked straight from a tree and destined for his morning juice. Even as a kid in the country, he had never, until that point eaten food as fresh, as seasonal and as good as this, never enjoyed hand to mouth as such, paddock to plate a phrase yet to be uttered and he became instantly hungry for the journey ahead – one that would lead him around Australia – gleaning bits of information on farming and growing and ultimately to the big glossy kitchens of Australia and the hard graft of a chef’s apprenticeship. He worked hard, very hard. Paul himself describes his years in a renowned Melbourne fine diner where he discovered that he could “work ninety hours a week, barely see the sun and survive on a diet of adrenaline, coffee and cigarettes…I realized that I had become so preoccupied with becoming a better cook that I had totally forgotten why I wanted to cook in the first place”. And so he headed back to Tasmania, back to the state that all those years ago had changed the way he looked at food forever. Perhaps this is where it all REALLY began – the purchasing of a few chooks, the planting of vegetables and trees on his very own patch. And perhaps the time was just right too for producers from the UK’s massively successful River Cottage television series to be putting out the feelers for the Aussie version of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Someone a little quirky, more than a little keen and ripe to jump off their own personal waterfall.
and having a second go. Digger is there too, the trusty dog by his master’s side and more often than not on hand to clean up those pesky scraps around the dinner table. Paul will tell you himself it is the greatest challenge he’s faced in his life. There are set backs of course – mother nature challenges at every corner from the full force of storms to the fierce determination of foxes and the never ending learnings about soil, water and how a magnesium deficiency can really ruin your tomatoes! For every challenge though there is a high – the rising sun across the land, the support of the community, country hospitality, the chance to be living his very own dream. These days, Paul West is certainly more than qualified to call himself an advocate of self sufficiency, a pioneer of sorts that many of us can look up to. His appeal is broad. For every woman charmed by his quick wit, easy smile and good old fashioned manners, there is a man wanting to help carry his axe, share a home brew and call him mate. Paul finished filming the 3rd season of River Cottage Australia last December and since then has welcomed his first child with partner Alicia. In April, he celebrated the publication of his first cookbook and the new series aired in late May. Little time to rest when there are piglets to tend, gardens to sustain, viewers to convert and babies to rear. Paul West, it can be said, has finally remembered why he wanted to cook in the first place. The River Cottage philosophy of “grow your own” is alive and well in Central Tilba – and in safe hands, Hugh.
After a standard and expected dose of procrastination, Paul filled out the application at the 12th hour (he described it to me as like filling out an online dating form). Included in that application was, according to executive producer David Galloway an “uncanny” description of his dream property. It matched the defunct farm that KEO Films Australia had just purchased for River Cottage, a place that once ran 300 cows, that bordered the wild and breathtaking long stretches of East coast Australia sand and sea and they sensed immediately that Paul West was on this journey regardless of the company of television cameras. The perfect candidate had fallen into their laps. Paul West was given 21 days notice to pack up his life and head North to the cuter than cute town of Central Tilba on the Southern NSW coast, set to begin his new life as the host of River Cottage Australia. Hugh was there, of course, at least at the beginning, and his new home – 8 hectares of fertile soil goodness masquerading as an old farm, untouched for more than 20 years and in a chronic state of disrepair…and the games began. Hugh and Paul weeded, dug and set up the chooks in a manic but mind- blowing first week and then there he was, alone, staring out at the land before him, nothing but opportunity ahead. He was ready. Two years down the line and River Cottage Australia has become one of Australia’s most adored shows. Paul has fished, dived for crays and octopus, he’s birthed animals, taken his place at the local markets, learnt a thing or two from the locals and made a myriad of friends and supporters. We watch with wry smiles as Paul fails and succeeds in equal measure – occasionally losing but never losing the lesson, always getting back on the horse U nique Luxur y

Sardine Escabeche SERVES 4
In the winter and spring months, schools of Australian sardine push in around the shores of the New South Wales south coast and a good feed can be quickly caught using a little berley and a fine hook. The rich, oily flesh of this tasty fish is offset beautifully by the vinegary tang of the escabeche. INGREDIENTS 12 butterflied sardines Salt and pepper Oil, for frying Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling 1 small brown onion, thinly sliced 1 carrot, thinly sliced 2 sprigs of thyme 3 bay leaves 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 mild red chilli, thinly sliced 250ml (1 cup) white wine Juice of 2 oranges Pinch of saffron threads Splash of white wine vinegar Flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped METHOD Season the sardine fillets with salt and pepper and then fry, skin-side down, in a little oil in a large frypan over a medium heat. As soon as the skin is golden and crispy remove the fillets from the heat and arrange in a single layer in a deep-sided dish. Drizzle over a little extra-virgin olive oil. Put the onion, carrot, thyme, bay leaves, garlic and chilli and a little more oil in the pan on a low heat and cook for a few minutes until softened. Add the white wine, orange juice and saffron to the pan and then add just enough white wine vinegar to give the sauce a bit of tang. Bring it all to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat, adjust the seasoning and pour over the sardine fillets. Cover the dish and let it stand and infuse in the fridge for an hour. To finish, spoon onto serving plates and sprinkle with parsley. Serve cold, with crusty white bread. U nique Luxur y

The father of the these, again in the opinion of many connoisseurs is Vacheron Constantin. If one looks at the longevity of continuous production and the quality of materials used, then it is certainly no idle boast that Vacheron Constantin can lay claim to being the leading and most sought after watchmaker in the world today. Of course it is a subjective matter. each to their own, as one might say, and without doubt all the leading companies, Ulysse Nardin, Cartier, Chopard, Piaget, Rolex inter alia, have wonderful products and remarkable histories and provenance. Vacheron Constantin, however, is something special with its philosophy of, “Do better if possible and that is always possible”, and has been striving to do better since the mid-18th Century. This, its 260th anniversary year since being established by its founder, Jean-Marc Vacheron in 1755 is an important date. For, every year that passes, Vacheron Constantin establishes a new record: this Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie is the oldest watch maker carrying out uninterrupted business since its foundation. 260 years of uninterrupted activity is a remarkable achievement, so one has no hesitation in positing that to have brought this about the watches created must be of the finest calibre. Yet at the same time, to continue to hold this pre-eminent position the company has also established principles of innovation and aesthetics as well as technique and quality. Originally the company was based on the Saint-Gervais district of Geneva, the city which it still calls home, but it was not until after the Napoleonic Wars that in 1819 that François Constantin conjoined his name with that of Vacheron. In 1880 the Maltese Cross was adopted as Vacheron Constantin’s brand symbol. The
company’s history and heritage is like that of no other, and in the 21st Century it continues to set new benchmarks by which itself and its competitors can be judged. So how is Vacheron Constantin celebrating its 260th landmark birthday? The answer to that question is by the release of some exciting new collections that reflect upon all of the artistic and horological expertise that has gone before. The beautiful ‘Harmony’ collection for instance is an updated new limited edition collection of seven watches inspired by one of Vacheron Constantin’s first chronographs introduced in 1928. It is a splendid range of watches, entirely hand-crafted by artisans who decorate all of the parts, including those invisible to the naked eye! Another birthday release is the ‘Mêtiers d’Art Arca’; a new collection of 12 unique crystal table clocks with amazing precision and which require winding just once a month. The quality of the Vacheron Constantin level of artistry can also be noticed in the ‘Mecaniques Gravées’ collection, two timepieces that are distinguished by movements entirely hand-engraved and in keeping with the tradition of the classic ornamental watchmaking of the past. Adorned with delicate floral motifs and arabesques, and housed in platinum cases these inspirational watches are testimony to the imagination as well as the hands and eyes of the watch maker, who has created works of art in miniature. It is the most recent release that personally excites me the most. Perpetuating the celebration of the continuous lineage of expertise, knowledge and skill, Vacheron Constantin has enlarged its ‘Historiques’ collection with a re-interpretation of its iconic 1955 classic ‘Cornes de Vache’ chronograph. Issued in an exclusive production run, the distinctive ‘cow-horn’ shape lugged chronograph features a central complication (a function other U nique Luxur y

than simply telling the time in watch speak) powered by a hand-wound Caliber 1142 (movement) housed in a 38.5 mm-diameter 10.9 mm thick 950 platinum case. Platinum by the way is some 30 times rarer than gold and four times stronger, with 950 signifying its purity as being of 95% pure platinum and of the highest quality possible. The new ‘Cornes de Vache 1955’ is water resistant to 30 metres and features the stylish, delicately polished ‘cow-horn’ lugs. It is a modern take on the first water resistant and antimagnetic chronograph that Vacheron Constantin originally crafted 60 years ago and which is now one of the most sought after models of the marque. This exclusive up-date model has a screwed-in caseback fitted with a transparent sapphire crystal, whilst there is a scrupulous recreation of the original layout of the 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and small seconds at 9 o’clock. The watch face reveals a silver-toned opaline dial with Roman numerals and hands in 18-carat white gold. Royal Blue is used on the central seconds hand, the 30-minute counter hand and the tachometric scale to further enhance the display and provide near faultless legibility. This chronograph is placed right at the heart of the Vacheron Constantin range. It will surely become a new classic and will undoubtedly be a highly collectable commodity. Incredibly detailed and precise, this Hallmark of Geneva certified timepiece has been entirely developed and manufactured by the company. A mechanical, manualwinding (with approximately 48 hours reserve) chronograph its caliber measures just 27.5 mm in diameter and is 5.6 mm thick (or should that be thin?); the whole ensemble is completed by a 950 platinum polished half Maltese Cross -shaped buckle on a hand-stitched dark blue alligator leather strap. This is no ordinary alligator however, but I am told is the leather taken from the Alligator Mississippiensis of the South-Eastern United States. If the ‘Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955’ is not exclusive enough though, or indeed if you miss out on the limited numbers available, fear not. As befits the skill and integrity of this Geneva-based Manufacture, Vacheron Constantin offers the ‘Quai de L’Ile’, named after the workshops where it has resided since 1875. This a bespoke personalisation service where the client can create their own watch choosing from a combination of precious materials and various dials and movements. For the uber watch afficionado though, where nothing but the very best combined with total exclusivity will suffice, then one must look to the ‘Atelier Cabinotiers’. If you are prepared to wait up to seven years for an absolutely unique timepiece designed to your own specifcation, then the master watchmakers, enamelers, engravers and gemsetters of Vacheron Constantin will create a custom-made wristwatch for you. But only if the ethics committee agree that it corresponds to the values and traditions of this most remarkable brand and most remarkable and longserving creator of a remarkable collection of timepieces. Before you go rushing off to have your new watch designed, just hold fire. I am assured that there are more exciting plans afoot to continue the birthday celebrations. It is very hush hush but expect exciting developments from Vacheron Constatntin and the innovative skills of its craftsmen before the year is out. After all, as François Constantin said in 1819, “Faire mieux si possible, ce qui est toujours possible”. T
here’s never enough hours in the day for a whirlwind like Johanna Johnson.
Fulltime designer, part-time health advocate, intermittent switchboard operator and all-round lovely speciwoman Johnson – or Jo, as she prefers to be called - manages to achieve more in each working day than most mere mortals manage in a week. However, faced with the maddening 24-hour limitation, her hectic professional and personal schedule has forced the Sydney-based bridal and couture designer to bite the bullet and do something very against her natural instincts. “I reluctantly rang our recruitment agent who I have worked with basically since we started [in 2001] and I told her I needed a personal assistant. She nearly fell off her stool. She said ‘you mean to tell me you’ve been operating all this time without one?’ When I told her it had always made more sense to employ another hand-beader or machinist, she was aghast. So now I’m looking for a really good, low-maintenance PA who doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty.” Those who know Johnson intimately know all too well just how tight a rein the one-time ad agency staffer and former fine art and graphic design graduate likes to keep on ensuring her brand DNA remains consistent. But few are aware just how hands-on she is across the many other arms of the business that has grown from a “side project” to the high profile design empire it is today. But for Johnson it’s clearly about much more than just keeping the label’s many A-list clientele - the likes of Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Chrissy Teigen, Kendall Jenner and The Princess of Monaco - content.
For starters there’s the three-year-old studio space in New York to keep an eye on, the flagship store and design hub in Sydney’s Woollahra to maintain, the Australian online store to manage and the dozens of stockists in the US and the UK to keep happy. Then there are the machinists and hand-beadists based in her Alexandria space to oversee, not to mention the corporate partnerships to nurture, the regular emails from the Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to respond to, the upcoming sunglass, nail polish and jewellery lines to launch and the potential investors to court. Of course there’s also the small matter of designing and fitting the gowns for the hundreds of brides and mother-of-the-brides who want to be dressed by Johanna Johnson on the most significant day of their personal lives and the dozens of celebrities who want to wear a Johanna Johnson gown on the most exciting red carpet of their professional lives. But most importantly there’s hubby Andrew and sons Charlie, 11 and Tommy, 8 to referee, wrangle, wrestle and retire home to. Johnson says the latter, her two favourite creations, are why she made the decision to launch her eponymous label and it is they who provide the motivation during the times when it can all seem too hard. The seed for launching her line may have been planted when Johnson was about to be married and struggled to find a gown of the style and quality she wanted. But it is the love for “her boys” that ensures the business’s continued success. “They’re basically the reason I do everything here. I wanted to be a stay-at-home mum and be a really good cook but then I realised my brain just wasn’t built like that.”

Born in the heart of New Zealand’s finest winegrowing region Marlborough, Johnson says she’s typical of the many girls growing up in rural areas for whom making their own clothes was more necessity than desire. Taught as part of the New Zealand school curriculum, she first learnt to sew in her early teens and was encouraged to explore her abilities further by her mother who may have recognised her inherent talent or may just have been attempting to save her daughter from the distractions that come with being a teenager and living in the sticks. “I can remember thinking looking through all the glossy mags, it was a particular pair of shorts that I was after - we’re talking 1988 so it was probably culottes, and I was unable to get those in Marlborough. I ended up just making all of my clothes. I made my first formal gown when we moved to Melbourne when I was 14. “Both my grandmothers were mad knitters, crocheters and sewers but I used to spend weekends with Vogue patterns all over the kitchen floor - piecing garments together with mum and learning the trials and joys that are domestic sewing machines. By 15 or 16 a lot of my friends probably had their first baby and I think it was my parent’s way of keeping us all busy and away from the boys.” It may be going back more than a decade but Johnson still recalls the first garment she ever sold. “It was a gown called The Rose. I was up and running but I had a machinist in Melbourne that I’d either headhunted or sourced and she would fly up every second Thursday to Sydney for fittings. I started hanging the gowns in my husband’s advertising agency and we’d get all the gowns every Saturday morning, steam them all and then do a full Saturday’s work taking orders for gowns. We moved to our first studio in Paddington after that.” With the opulent grandeur of old Hollywood the distinctive Johanna Johnson signature, the label prides itself on its pure old-fashioned quality and the fact it is still 100 percent Australian-made. Her favoured fabrics are silks, wool and cotton sourced from around the world and laces and brocades sourced from Italy and France. Despite her bridal collections retailing for between $1200 and $25,000, every garment - whether part of the brand’s lifestyle range or bridal wear - is lined in silk. Embellishments are a big feature of most of the gowns with some of the more elaborate designs taking her handbeaders up to two months to complete. Johnson’s focus on construction is also a big selling point with some gowns featuring up to 40 panels of bias. A directive from Johnson also means all fabric colour ways used in the collections are exclusively customised to the label’s seasonal colour palette so won’t be found anywhere else while each awards season only one gown in each style is offered to preserve the uniqueness of the design. However it is the lengths to which Johnson and her team go when servicing each client that lies at the core of the label’s enduring popularity. “It is really challenging manufacturing onshore but that is our main selling point in America. Our gowns hang next to all these other gown brands that are produced in the east - or wherever they may be produced – [and the others] are just a number in a production line. “[The designers behind those gowns] don’t know the client’s name, they don’t have a connection to all the little bits and pieces, the notes and the alterations and colour ways or what [the client] is thinking about for bridesmaids. “The ladies who create our gowns are the same ladies who work on our Oscar’s gowns. It’s the same process to the point that only the people who make the gown do the alterations on it as they’re the only ones to have their hand print on that particular dress. It’s like their individual handwriting and with sewing it’s the same thing. It keeps the story of the gown consistent. “I think it’s our duty of care to look after [our clients] because [buying one of our gowns] is an investment like buying a house or a car. We don’t do sales as such but I gift them a veil, for example. It’s made of a really soft silk tulle but I’ve created it in a way that it can be worn as a wrap or for bassinets so it can be used for their children’s christenings.” The ability to put herself in someone else’s shoes is also a big part of the Johnson magic and while it has no doubt benefited her business, it has also benefited countless others through her work with charities such as the Gidget Foundation which raises awareness of perinatal anxiety and depression, a condition Johnson herself was forced to battle. In addition Johnson has a tie in with the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation courtesy of her good pal, renowned neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo. “Here I am pfaffing around with gowns and here he is changing lives and saving U nique Luxur y

lives. But if we can donate gowns or auction gowns, whatever way we can support then it’s really important for us that we do so. We try and give back as much as we can but we’ve had to limit ourselves to the two charities as it means we can think about projects that we can really target. “Charlie doesn’t know this but in our next awards season collection I’m making a Cure Brain Cancer gown that is inspired by what they do. Here’s hoping it gets placed on someone wonderful so that they can use it and do something with it.” Two years ago Johnson put a handbrake on her business to undertake a forensic investigation. That process set in motion plans to expand production up to 400 percent without diluting the quality or compromising the hand finishing’s that epitomise the label. As one of the few great labels still standing, and the only one for whom Julie Bishop seeks ideas on how to entice more Australian labels to manufacture onshore, there has been no shortage of brands eager to align themselves with the Johanna Johnson success story. There is a new commercial partnership with French-made, Italianproduced nail polish brand Faby which will see Johnson launch a set of three bridal colour and three red carpet nail polishes into the Australian market in March 2016. A new sunglass offering is also in the pipeline with the label teaming with Ilaboptics to launch a range of eyewear around the same time with a $25,000 one-off pair embossed with precious metal featuring as its hero piece. In addition
there will also be a collaboration with Sydney jewellers Fairfax & Roberts with plans to launch a co-branded fine jewellery collection early next year. And there are others too. The sponsors of the Johanna Johnson show at Mercedes-Benz Australian Fashion Week, Melbourne-based Capital Grand Development, appear interested in extending their strategic partnership to incorporate the label’s showing at global fashion weeks while the brand is also considering an offer to film a reality-type show following Johnson and her team as they head to the US to prepare for the film and television awards season. “I think a lot of people see fashion as very glamorous but it’s 99 percent really hard work. It’s a lot about making other people look glamorous.” Yet despite all she has achieved, when asked what she is most proud of Johnson again deflects the spotlight onto her team and her family. Her children afford her great pleasure, she says, because they are happy at school and despite the demands of her business she enjoys the fact she is still able to pick them up most days. “I’m also proud of the recognition my team get and the fact they get to see their handprint on the red carpet and that’s a real buzz moment for them. “Everyone says you can’t have it all and I agree with that. But I might be at the stage where I’m achieving a bit of balance between my work and my children.”

Edward Chiu specialises in one-of-a-kind jewellery

A lasting legacy It’s a place where international musicians, politicians and celebrities hang out; private presentations to the Brunei royal household are commonplace and merchandise is presented in gilded birdcages. But for those working for the Edward Chiu Jewellery Art store, it is a living testimonial to a gifted pioneer, as Unique Luxury discovered.

The brand’s opulent retail outlet displays its jewellery via guilded bird cages
Chiu’s distinct design signature was his connection to nature with bird motifs seen throughout his collections
M
uch like the gem he loved to craft, Edward Chiu is remembered as a significant part of Chinese culture.
Born into a family that had been dealing in Jade for generations, Chiu showed no interest in plying the family trade until he left Hong Kong to study at New York’s famed Parsons School of Design. It was only then he recognised the stone’s true artistic potential when re-birthed as fine jewellery. Determined to fuse his eastern and western roots by mixing occidental aesthetics with oriental tradition, Chiu followed his gut instinct by becoming the first artisan jeweller to incorporate black and white jade as a signature element. Using art deco as his inspiration, he launched his first collection of brooches to much acclaim in 1993, the initial success cementing his belief that what the Chinese term the “stone of heaven” was the ideal raw material with which to pair his one-of-a-kind creations. And clearly his zeal was well founded. In 2004/05, he was chosen as Designer/Artist of the Future for the international exhibition, Awakening: La France Mandarin, The French Influence on Chinese Art held in various cities across China and Paris. Chiu was also named one of 10 Outstanding Hong Kong Designers in 2008 and has had his work highlighted in the ‘Jewellery for Life’ exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
“Flora and fauna, every single element from our mother earth inspired him and he connected himself to the flow in order to make his very own vision become works of art.” Today the label, still headquartered in Hong Kong, enjoys phenomenal success in China and further afield with Edward Chiu pieces profiled in such well-read publications as the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times. In addition the label has been invited to personally present key items to members of the South East Asian royal household. As was the case when it was first launched, the label continues to use Jade as its cornerstone but has more lately incorporated jewellery and art made from diamonds, rubies and other precious gems. Each piece is lovingly crafted by hand in the eponymous label’s Chinese workshop with the vast majority retailing through the Edward Chiu boutique store in Hong Kong’s popular Central district. In keeping true to the brand DNA, the store’s interior oozes class with both artwork and jewellery showcased in guilded gold birdcages while custom designed drawer handles, flooring and the store’s dedicated VIP area continue the opulent theme. Hui will not be drawn on the value of the stock carried in its flagship store, stating simply: “The real rich hardly count exactly how much they have.”
While the designer himself passed away in 2011, his legacy continues via his own familial lineage with close relations occupying key roles within the business and nephew Eddy Hui stepping into the role of artistic director.
Nor will he admit to pulling rank when it comes to ensuring his DNA is present across the finished articles, arguing while the Chiu brand may operate under his stewardship, it is a collaborative effort where everyone has equal input.
Hui says a key handprint of Chiu’s intricate design signature was his connection to nature, and the design team feels an obligation to continue to reference this. For this reason bird and butterfly motifs can be found across almost every collection.
“It’s actually an art jamming space rather than a workshop. [The creativity process is not a process at all]. Everything goes with the flow. No rule is the only rule. That’s how we keep ourselves absolutely niche and unique in the market. Creativity is all about U nique Luxur y

Incorporating coloured stones into the jade collections has allowed the design team the chance to play with shape and form. Opposite page: Edward Chiu sadly passed away in 2011 but his legacy lives on.

feeling. To us it’s a human thing not a procedure. “Our complicated creation [process] is similar to a pregnancy, it generally takes nine months,” says Hui. Commanding anywhere from $A5,000 to seven figures for some of the label’s more intricate offerings, word of the label’s luxurious properties has reached an A-list audience with Edward Chiu pieces spotted on the necks, chests, wrists and ears of everyone from former US Secretary of State Madeline Albright to virtuoso violinist Vanessa Mae and megastar Chinese actress Fan Bingbing. However, while A-listers clearly have found an affinity with the label’s contemporary design, it also ticks all the boxes with local fans eager to adorn themselves with the stone they believe contains special properties to ward off disease and evil spirits. Sadly these powers were nowhere to be seen when the label faced its greatest challenge during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in China in late 2002 and early 2003. “There was no walk-in shoppers or overseas clients, this is when we shifted our focus to our bespoke service.” Out of everything negative comes something positive and the focus on custom-made and design pieces has been a winner from an economic perspective with this arm of the business now accounting for around 15 percent of total sales. Despite this, Hui believes there is still plenty of room for growth at the brand. Australia, he says, is a growing market however it is closer to home where the label’s biggest spenders can be found. Where most interest used to be received from the US, the luxury business globally is now being driven out of China. It is partly for this reason there has been soaring demand for jade’s traditional deep green colour, the most expensive of all jadeite offerings. This has led Hui and his team to diversify the colours of jade his
company sources from Myanmar (formerly Burma), using the better quality green stones for traditional designs but turning to black, lavender, yellow, red and even colourless versions of the gem – where it is looked upon more favourably by the brand’s European clientele. By incorporating the coloured stones into the Edward Chiu offering, the effects are two-fold: the design team is able to be more “daring and creative” with their design while the cheaper entry point makes the range more accessible to those seeking a fashionable element for their jewellery collection. The design of jade jewellery is mostly influenced by the texture, shape and characteristic of the individual stone, Hui says. During an interview with The New York Times earlier this year, Hui was quoted as stating that a designer wouldn’t dare to make such a daring design in green jade, as a top quality stone in that colour could easily be put to more profitable use. “When someone is spending millions of dollars purchasing a jadeite piece of jewellery, they are only concerned about the quality of the jade and not so much the design. They tend to stick with very traditional and simple styles because the value of the stone prohibits them from being too fashion-forward. “A jeweller will probably harvest the stone and make several pairs of earrings or pendants that will give a better yield,” he was quoted as saying. But no matter what incarnation in which it comes, at the end of it all Hui says all he really craves is for his customers to be transported into another place when wearing something from his uncle’s store. “Their taste is beyond price tags and labels, their happiness and preference comes first. The only person they [need to please] is their selves by [enjoying] a real luxury experience. All art should be like all of us – one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable.” U nique Luxur y

rom a bare cow paddock in 1983 to a beautiful rainforest botanical garden, this is potentially one of the best personal environmental projects in the Byron Shire: a totally unique property.
The first of some 20,000 rainforest plants were planted on Christmas Day 1983 and, as with all botanical gardens, this property will only improve in value as it matures. This will be a truly unique legacy to pass on through the generations or an amazing environmental investment property to on-sell in the future. The gardens have been established around the ideal central main house site, well away from the boundaries and protected from wind and the summer sun, yet benefitting from the warmth of the winter sun. Here you can build your dream home, subject to council approval,
potentially up to three levels because of the site topography with room also for a three to four car garage. A 200m long tree and palm lined driveway leads to a turning circle with space for another two car garage and workshop or shed. Three phase power is already connected to the property. With the exception of the main house site, the entire 5 acres (approx.) is your garden with the feel of a peaceful and tranquil national park. The body of water on the property has been landscaped to give the illusion that there is a river heading off into the distance. All the rainforested areas require no mowing, brush cutting and little to no weeding. The combination of rainforest and a body of water has created a wellestablished habitat for over a hundred observed species of both land based animals and bird species, there is also a breeding Koala colony. LOUIS VUITTON Public demand for access to the Louis Vuitton archives has been sated following the news the French fashion house is set to open a new gallery in Asnières, 8km northwest of the centre of Paris. Curated by Australian-born Professor of Fashion & Museology Judith Clark, La Galerie brings to life the dialogue between artists, artisans and customers of Vuitton through letters and sketches, personal effects, historic items, and artworks inspired by the House. One of these – a work by Jorge OteroPailos – welcomes visitors as they enter the space, located right next to the Vuitton workshop. The suburb has played home to the label since 1859 when Louis Vuitton, with a view to expansion, moved the nerve-centre of his business from Paris to Asnières. The building also housed the Vuitton family, who lived on the top floor, in order to remain as close as possible to day-to-day operations. The Asnières workshop is still responsible for crafting the House’s most exceptional pieces, including hard-sided trunks, items in rare and exotic skins, and all special orders which over the years have included the bed-trunk of explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza and an iPad trunk for Karl Lagerfeld. A large number of such treasures are still carefully kept in Asnières, which stores 23,000 objects and 165,000 documents, including 110,000 customer records, a selection of which feature in the new gallery, which opens in September by appointment only.

Burberry As if we needed more reason to love Burberry, the UK fashion house has set about putting its money where its mouth is by adopting a host of new initiatives aimed at positioning itself as a more socially responsible business. A corporate responsibility pack released to investors has shown that in the 2014/15 financial year employees at the British fashion house dedicated almost 10,000 hours of their time, skills and passions during working hours to volunteer programmes aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable people in their communities. On top of this the group led by the talented Christopher Bailey donated 1 percent (or ÂŁ4.6 million) of its profit before tax to charitable causes with the majority going to the Burberry Foundation, a philanthropic organisation dedicated to helping young people realise their full potential. In addition it has worked hard at developing more responsible and sustainable supply chains conducting 541 audits and assessments via its ethical trading programme. In keeping true to its stated philosophy, the brand does not authorise sourcing from certain countries including Bangladesh, Pakistan and Cambodia. Other initiatives the company has committed to undertake include eliminating chemicals from use that have a negative impact on the environment, a commitment to make 100 percent of its point of sale packing sustainably sourced and working with its suppliers to increase awareness of the environmental impact of cotton production and its tanneries to increase efficiency within the tanning process.

Dior Homme Virtual reality has been used within the fashion arena for quite some time now but Dior has taken it to a whole new level. In keeping with the quality craftsmanship expected of the Paris-based fashion house, Dior has developed an ultra-immersive virtual reality headset. Dubbed Dior Eyes, the headset is equipped with high definition image resolution and unique audio, meaning its users can head onstage or backstage to all its fashion shows without ever leaving their seat. The use of Dior Eyes offers users the sensation of 360째 vision, letting visitors move about in the virtual universe. Once activated, it provides a 515ppi pixel density visual experience with an almost 100-degree field of view, and audio comes from a set of built-in headphones. The headset itself has been produced in Dior black and the Dior logo lights up to complete the effect. Introduced in June at selected Dior stores around the world, its launch event showed models during final preparations before the show, being made up. The headset was created at Dior workshops with the help of DigitasLBi Labs France using a 3D printer. It is believed to be the first application of its kind to be used in the fashion industry.

Ermenegildo Zegna Motorsport and fashion have always proved good bedfellows. Not dissimilar to the unique relationship between luxury jewellery and polo or perhaps high end timepieces and sailing. So when it was announced two years ago that Maserati would be teaming with Ermenegildo Zegna to launch a new collaboration, no one was particularly surprised. The relationship continues to flourish with the news both parties recently celebrated the delivery of the last of 100 Quattroportes model cars trimmed inside with chevron-patterned silks woven by Zegna at its Trivero mills. Designed exclusively for Maserati by Zegna’s technical team, the selected silk endured extensive testing prior to getting the seal of approval from the car manufacturer with the finished item containing around 12 metres of fabric (or more than three times the amount used for an average suit) per car. For those prepared to pay the premium to get it installed it is used across seat panels, doors and a complete new roof lining. To celebrate the launch, Zegna developed an exclusive capsule collection featuring a personalised Zegna for Maserati selvedge together with footwear and outerwear products inspired by the Limited Edition that will be available at select Zegna stores.

here is nowhere else in the world like Aspen, Colorado. This glamorous ski town offers a truly unique mix of fantastic skiing, deliciously different Apres Ski combined with the right dose of luxury. One of the best ways to experience this is to simply book into Aspen’s luxe Residences at the Little Nell.
Private concierge services are easily found and deliver anything from bottles of oxygen (Aspen town sits at an elevation of 8000ft / 2400m) to flowers and goggles that will fit your baby. Hire a limousine, dine as well as in any major city and buy fine art to the latest designer clothes.
Here even après ski is literally lifted to new heights: guests wind down after a hectic day on the slopes in rooftop Jacuzzis, glass of champagne in hand, as skiers below leave Aspen (Ajax) Mountain and scuttle off into the streets beyond. Anyone staying at The Residences however has simply skied straight home as the apartments are located slope-side in an enviable ski-in skiout location. There’s no bother storing or fetching ski equipment either. That is all taken care of by a private concierge who even warms your ski boots.
Aspen has not one but four mountains to choose from, too – Aspen (commonly called Ajax) Mountain directly above town, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, ( one of the largest fields in the US and the beginner’s field of Buttermilk. Access to all is included on one lift pass, which also covers the shuttle buses running regularly between them, although most lodges have their own transport.
The Residences’ collection of 26 enormous apartments belong to Aspen’s only 5 star property The Little Nell, famous as Colorado’s most elite ski-in ski-out hotel, and arguably the US, where all guests receive the same star treatment. Despite all this heady luxury – Aspen is one of the most down-toearth and friendly ski towns in North America. There is definitely an affordable side, too, particularly when it comes to eating and drinking. But the bottom line is that Aspen has more luxury and high-end service on offer than virtually any other ski destination in the country.
Speaking of which, another special part of staying at either of The Little Nell properties is being offered the keys to a sparkling new Audi. This however poses the dilemma of whether to walk or drive to Aspen’s first class shops and restaurants. As pleasurable as driving may be, walking affords the opportunity to share the same footpaths as regular winter visitors Elle MacPherson, Heidi Klum, Ben Affleck and Beyonce. Nothing is too far for a stroll, anyway. Some of fashion’s biggest names nestle within a three-block radius, including Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Prada, Burberry and Kate Spade. Should you need a new suit while on ski holiday Ermenegildo Zegna is here too. Chanel launched a pop-up store a while ago.

Art galleries are another Aspen treat. Not your normal run of the mill tourist town galleries, these offer only the best in the country from vintage movie posters to astonishing glass art sculptures and valuable paintings by up and coming North American artists. Immaculate stones glitter in the windows of over a dozen fine jewellery stores and the outfit in that month’s Vogue magazine is quite likely hanging in a designer store nearby. When it comes to dining, the establishments on Aspen’s ski fields can be just as exclusive as in town, too, where the internationally famous Matsuhisa reigns as one of the most popular. On-mountain dining ranges from fine dining to casual yet upscale bistros where French champagne sits in the drinks cabinet alongside the soft drinks (find this at Elk Camp on Aspen Snowmass).
sensation this season is The Little Nell’s T-Lazy-7’s Guest Ranch winter dinners for its guests, held in a private yurt accessed by snowcat with a private chef and personal sommeliers. Nothing is too downmarket in this part of the world though. Last season we spotted members of the Trump clan (sans Donald) chowing down on grilled sandwiches in Aspen Mountain’s casual Sundeck cafeteria. The Sundeck is also well known for its free morning yoga classes should you need to stretch at a heady 11,200 ft / 3400m before hitting the slopes.
An absolute must though is lunch at Aspen Highland’s 10,900 ft (3322m) high Cloud Nine restaurant, preferably on a sunny day to allow al fresco dining on the deck. The European menu offers delicious cuisine from raclette to black truffle gnocchi plus fine wines, and the views of endless peaks include the most photographed summits in Aspen, the picturesque Maroon Bells. Mid-afternoon the DJs turn up the music and party mode sets in.
Far less strenuous ways to unwind can be found everywhere. Relaxing can also come in the form of kicking back with a cocktail in the spectacularly renovated Hotel Jerome, one of Aspen’s most beautiful historic gems, or taking in a show at the stunningly restored Wheeler Opera House. The Jerome’s J-Bar is a place to try marvellous mixology teamed with fabulous locally sourced food as well as people watch. The poolside apres ski at the 39 Degrees bar in the Sky Hotel is an Aspen past time. But one of the most heavenly ways to unwind is undoubtedly at the Remede Spa within The St Regis Hotel. Particularly lovely, it is filled with waterfalls and oxygen lounges amid a candle lit interior sure to soothe aching skier muscles as well as the soul.
Cloud Nine has been smartened up for the coming 2015-16 season with a $1.1 million refurbishment. Another new dining

The interiors of Angel Wing are a unique blend of futuristic living and high-market indulgence. Designed over three years by renowned architect Peter Stutchbury, this property celebrates the elements of the nature in which it is embedded. A skylight performs as a prominent design feature: a natural movement of water on the roof filters the light seeping into the house, creating a dramatic effect and a play on light. Being a contemporary design, the concept of openplan living and spacious rooms is present. Our favourite chamber of Angel Wing is where the open fireplace is found - cosy up to roast marshmallows over a naked flame and listen to the native Banksias as they echo a melody in the woods.
