estled on the Macedon range this magnificent estate combines historical charm and character with contemporary elegance. Originally set on 60 acres of botanical gardens and built in 1873 for the daughter of Charles Ryan who married the Governor of the day, the estate is one of the oldest in the region and the first built on Macedon range to capture breath-taking views. Whilst only a relatively small portion of the original home still stands as the guest wing, it combines seamlessly with the much newer main residence (circa 2007) now on 2.5 acres of breathtakingly beautiful, relatively low maintenance grounds. Framed by a 150 year old oak tree and a 100 year old Californian Redwood this remarkable home is reminiscent of an elegant chateau or Hampton’s style manor. Derriweit is 650 metres above sea level and sports wonderful views over the valley below and the Melbourne city lights and bay beyond. High ceilings and large picture windows provide oodles of natural light and a wonderful feeling of space. The large open plan living, kitchen and dining room form the heart of the home and incorporate a gas fire place for the cooler months and split system zoned Daikin air conditioning for the summer months. The spacious kitchen features Miele appliances and stone bench tops and is ideal for entertaining. An impressive turret houses the stairs which lead to the 4 upstairs bedrooms including an expansive master suite with stunning ensuite and large walk-in robe. Below the living area is a wine cellar; a self contained guest suite and a 4 car garage. The original section of the home is now a 3 bedroom guest wing with its own kitchen, living space and separate external access (if needed). The original carriageway in the forecourt leads to another 2 car garage and the games room/barn. Whether it is a stunning weekend retreat or a tree change you seek, this property is a place where many wonderful family memories will be created. This landmark estate encapsulates the essence of seclusion, sophistication, tranqulity and magestic status, located in a world class address and only 45 minutes from Melbourne. U nique Luxur y

IT'S A NEW DAY The new Dawn has arrived – a Rolls-Royce like no other.

Jonathan Shears and Michael Schneider at the Dawn launch on Sydney Harbour

T

here is something special about a name. As Eddie Carbone, the everyman figure in Arthur Miller’s tragic play ‘A View From the Bridge’ (1955) states, “I want my name!”. A name tells us so much about a character as anyone who has ever dipped into a Charles Dickens’ novel will know, e.g. Mr Gradgrind, the Headmaster in ‘Hard Times’ (1854). A name is very important as Johnny Cash’s ‘A Boy Named Sue’ would no doubt testify. So, a car company’s use of a name for its latest offering is no less important. I am not quite convinced that Citroën hit the right note when it resurrected the DS nomenclature. Certainly the new DS range offers much and reflects upon the Citroën brand heritage, but you could hardly call the DS3 a “goddess”. Alfa Romeo offers another clever play on words with its Mito, a car jointly built in Milan (Milano) and Turin (Torino), but this car is hardly mythical as the Italian word Mito implies. The name of Rolls-Royce, itself derived from the surnames of its two founders, Sir Henry Royce and the Honourable Charles Rolls, has long been synonymous with creating the “Best Car in the World”. The names of Rolls-Royce cars have always been rather classical. The names, like that of Citroën and the DS, are often re-used. This is no bad thing for if a name is chosen carefully to epitomise the innate qualities of the vehicles then they should be carried over if the new vehicles continue to demonstrate those same family traits and characteristics. The names of Ghost, Wraith, Phantom are useful in differentiating the different models of RollsRoyce motor cars but they are also useful in reflecting upon the silent nature of these remarkably quiet vehicles. Since the dawn of Rolls-Royce over 110 years ago, the name of each model has said something about the particular car and the Company itself. The latest launch of its new car by Rolls-Royce is no exception. The Dawn name has been utilised once again for the first time since, what might perhaps be described as a false Dawn in the 1980s, and before that when it was used between 1950 and 1954

12

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

- a new Dawn of hope in a Britain recovering from the effects of the Second World War. The latest Rolls-Royce to carry the Dawn moniker has been described by Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as, “the sexiest Rolls-Royce ever built.” Herein lies new territory for Rolls-Royce - the idea of sexy: perhaps Dawn does not refer to the rising of Helios’ chariot each morning heralding in a new day, but to a woman’s name. Whatever the explanation, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is a wonderful motor car. As the boss says, it is sexy and at the same time a, “car that offers the most uncompromised open-top motoring experience in the world. It will be the most social of super-luxury drop head motor cars for those who wish to bathe in the sunlight of the world’s most exclusive social hotspots.” It is a veritable dawning of a new age for Rolls-Royce providing as it now does the world’s only true modern four-seater luxury convertible with styling that is ultra-modern. It is not just a Ghost or a Wraith turned into a drop head but a true stand alone car which has been designed and built as such and features 80% unique body panels and an incredible attention to detail, even down to the new and very specific tyres upon which it rolls. The idea of this car as rolling is not just a play upon words, for such is the quietness of the car and the lack of intrusive noise from the 6.6 litre V12 twin-turbo engine, that it seems to almost glide along. With the roof up it is as quiet as its sister the Wraith, whilst it takes just 20 seconds of further almost total silence for the roof to fully open at a cruising speed of 50 km/h. Rolls-Royce’s famed and well deserved reputation for silent running and aural cosseting is not let down by the mere fact of this being an open topped car. The engineering and design of the roof and its mechanism retains the Dawn’s intrinsic beauty with either the roof up or down. Indeed the roof of the Dawn is the second largest fabric roof on a current production car and after only another Rolls-Royce, the Phantom Drop Head Coupé. So quiet is the lowering of the soft top that the engineers

The Dawn on Sydney Harbour

responsible for it have dubbed it, ‘The Silent Ballet’, a fitting comment on the quietest open top car ever produced. This stunning car is no Wraith simply turned into a drop head, but one designed and built in its own right by Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Giles Taylor and his team. This is not a 2+2 either but a full blown four-seater. As Taylor says, “We pride ourselves as creators of fine motor cars that also serve as social spaces. The idea of creating a car like Dawn that can be used in comfort by only two adults on a day to day basis is anathema. In creating Dawn we have accepted no compromise to the comfort and luxury of four adults who want to travel together in the pinnacle of style.”

Hero car interior

The ultimate journey

Roof up the Dawn looks phenomenal. Roof down, the ‘sexiness’ of the Rolls-Royce Dawn is even more apparent. From the side the steep rake of the windscreen, the swage line that flows over the rear haunches plus the high beltline that rises along the profile give the impression of effortless speed. The very same rising beltline wraps around the rear passenger cabin akin to the collar of a jacket pulled up to protect the neck. The deck itself is an amazing work of modern craftsmanship. Clothed in open-pore Canadel panelling that traces the horse-shoe shape of the rear cabin, it demonstrates the great advances that the craftspeople in the Woodshop at the home of RollsRoyce in Goodwood, England have made in wood crafting technology and techniques. The wood on the deck, chosen by the customer to suit their individual taste, flows down the ‘Waterfall’ between the rear seats, and around the cabin clothing the interior door panels and enticing the owner to enter the car. Normally Australia sees the dawn before most other places in the world, but Rolls-Royce has set the world on its head with this chariot. As if the world is spinning in reverse the Dawn was first seen at the Frankfurt International Motor Show and then the Dubai equivalent before finally arriving in Sydney. As the soft top recedes and ‘The Silent Ballet’ is enacted, it is like the beginning of a new day. Dawn has arrived at last, the dark of night recedes and the sun bursts forth. U nique Luxur y

There are good stands of natural timber and scattered rocky outcrops. On the southwest side, a gorge meanders down to the river for which a beautiful wildlife corridor has been created. This is one of those very special holdings. 5 minutes to Bowral, 1.5 hours to Sydney and the feeling of being a million miles away.

Hidden Depths As a career gemologist Anna Cisecki has held some of the most impressive precious stones ever to be dug out of the earth. Now as the head of brokerage firm Australian Diamond Portfolio (ADP) she’s teaching others to recognise their true value, as Tracey Porter discovers.

U nique Luxur y

25

26

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

In many ways he was the ideal first client. When he knocked on the door of Sydney diamond sourcing agency ADP he was a partner in a successful Melbourne-based legal practice whose money was largely tied up in property and shares. But he’d decided to diversify by dabbling in a bit of gold. Being an attorney, he was wise to the volatility in the markets and was looking for a low-maintenance but stable asset where he could park his money and watch his investment grow. Seeking initially just to test the waters, he brought with him a $200,000 investment budget, sharing his plans to eventually build to a $2 million portfolio. Based out of Sydney, the ADP team set to work and soon after managed to source him a lustrous purplish pink cushion cut diamond for which he paid the not-insignificant sum of $195,000. Just two years later his little investment has appreciated by 45 percent and he has again called on ADP to procure for him the second addition to his sparkling portfolio – this time a deep violet blue coloured diamond, valued at around $1 million. But it’s not by chance that investors seeking to put their money into something tangible are looking at precious gems. According to the Fancy Colour Research Foundation (FCRF), from 2006 to 2014, fancy coloured diamonds – or in layman’s terms pink, yellow, and blue diamonds - experienced an average total appreciation of 154 percent. While the Diamond Prices Index confirms colourless, white diamond increased by 62 percent during the same period. ADP executive director Anna Cisecki says changes in the world economy are helping to fuel demand for investment diamonds by Asian investors while the supply squeeze is further driving price growth, particularly in the area of fancy coloured diamonds. While the majority of ADP clients are Australianbased, she says the company has a growing number of clients from China, Hong Kong and the Middle East. Most have personal and/or professional ties to Australia and are seeking to move a portion of their wealth to this country and make investments. All high net worth individuals, their professions range from top-end medical and legal to furniture retailers and aviation. “Australia has an ideal political and economic environment for safe storage of physical assets: we have a stable political climate, minimal national debt, and we’re one of the last few remaining nations with a AAA credit rating. “With regulations around foreign property investment becoming more stringent in Australia, overseas investors are now more than ever seeking alternative opportunities here.” All of which is good news for Cisecki – who gained her certification from the Canadian Institute of Gemmology but later held management roles in the only accredited diamond-grading lab in the country, the Diamond U nique Luxur y

27

Certification Laboratory of Australia (DCLA) and her boutique team of specialised diamond investment advisors. Having launched in 2013, ADP runs its Australian operations out of the Sydney’s MLC Centre but also has offices at the DCLA where viewings are held and clients afforded the chance to get a “behindthe-scenes” look at how diamonds get graded, tested, certified and valued. In addition it conducts high-security private consultations and diamond viewings at Guardian Vaults by appointment. Increasing demand for its brokerage services means the firm is on schedule to open a branch in Hong Kong midway through next year while plans to open in Dubai in 2017 are well under way. Cisecki believes much of the reason for ADP’s early success has come because of the level of consultation that goes on prior to any purchase. She says there is much more than meets the eye when making an investment of this type with colour, weight, shape, intensity, measurement, polish, symmetry and clarity just some of the factors needed to be taken into consideration. Cisecki says the decision to start a diamond portfolio, and the level of investment, is one that must be made wholly by the client taking into consideration their entire portfolio of investments with circumstances varying from person to person. But, she says, it’s important to note there is a minimum recommended entry level. “Not all diamonds can be considered investment diamonds, meaning those that will maintain and grow in value over time; the majority of diamonds on the market are actually quite common, and realising a resale value even close to the purchase price requires specialised knowledge. “Only about one in 10,000 are coloured diamonds, and while prices for different colour and size combinations vary significantly, to buy one of a rarity sufficient to be considered for investment potential clients are looking at the $50,000 mark, depending on the hue,” she says. Cisecki says when determining value of colourless diamonds, carat, cut, colour and clarity are important. However there is much more to be considered with coloured diamonds. “For colourless diamonds, cut is king. When you’re buying a diamond for fire, life, and sparkle; it has the greatest effect on a diamond’s appearance, even though price is dictated more significantly by carat weight, clarity and colour. For example, you can have a top D-colour, IF-clarity diamond that’s very rare and expensive, but if it’s not cut well it will actually look dull and lifeless. [With] fancy coloured diamonds, it’s all about the colour. The more beautiful and rare the colour, the more valuable the diamond.” A number of factors give diamonds their colour, including atomic-level substitutions, proximity to natural radiation or the strain in the lattice structure during their formation – that takes place over thousands of years. If a diamond is overexposed to natural radiation while it is forming, it can develop colours ranging from green to green blue. A distortion of the lattice 28

structure in response to physical stresses can result in diamonds appearing pink or brown. Colour can also occur as a result of the replacement of carbon atoms in the lattice - when nitrogen replaces carbon, the diamond is yellow; when the replacement elements is boron, the diamond can appear blue. Fancy coloured diamonds generally boast one of 12 distinct hues (or ‘primary’ colours): Yellow, Pink, Blue, Green, Orange, Brown, Violet, Gray, Purple, Red, Black and White. But there are also more than 230 colour combinations in which the primary hue is modified by a secondary overtone ie ‘Purplish Pink’. In addition, the saturation and tone of each colour must be specified according to scale of intensity – Faint to Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Deep, Fancy Intense, and Fancy Vivid. While there are many nuances to colour, they are not difficult to understand, she says. “The more rare and beautiful the colour, the more valuable, though there is some leeway for personal taste when it comes to desirability.” When it comes to financial investments, one of the basic concepts is to detach the emotional or sentimental from the intellectual aspects of the decision making process, she says. In principle, this is a great ideal; in reality, there is usually an element of sentimentality in any investment decision, and fancy coloured diamonds are no exception. “Just like most investors need to have a property appeal that ‘speaks’ to them in some special way, so too a diamond has a voice - many are often surprised by just how much. Saying that, when it comes to diamond investment I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with falling in love with a particular colour or stone, particularly if the investment is also for wear in jewellery; the key is to balance that with grounded professional advice.” Cisecki and her team have been credited with going the extra mile for their clients with potential purchasers taken through a comprehensive education experience prior to any money changing hands. The process begins with a consultation to educate the client and determine their level of investment before ADP gets to work sourcing an appropriate diamond. Next the buyer is presented with what ADP calls its Diamond Investment Portfolio Proposal, which includes an independent Diamond Grading Report, a separate valuation report and relevant certificate of authenticity. Once accepted, the client pays a 10 percent deposit to secure the diamond. Once full payment is made and ADP has physically acquired the diamond, the DCLA undertakes what is called a

‘diamond verification process’ to match the diamond against the Diamond Grading Report, and confirm that the diamond has been unaltered and undamaged in any way. Only once this is complete is the diamond then handed over to the purchaser. To this end ADP works hard to develop strong relationships with its extensive network of suppliers – which include diamond cutters, brokers, dealers, auction houses and site holders. As with most legitimate diamond traders, ADP requires that each stone is ethically sourced and as such the business demands that all suppliers provide a written warranty as per the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme - created by a global organisation of governments, industry, and human rights groups to prevent the sale of conflict diamonds – stating their diamonds come from Kimberley-certified sources and are not involved in funding conflict. Cisecki is herself a member of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses, meaning she is subject to the stringent set of trading practices that govern acceptance and continued membership. These rules include sourcing diamonds from trusted and reputable industry members, those who subscribe to industry-wide standards of disclosure regarding products and who subscribe to a System of Warranties that all diamonds are conflict-free, amongst a host of other undertakings. While being close to the coalface does has its advantages, Cisecki says the stones ADP deals with are in such scarce supply there are no real discounts with tight margins leaving little room for “mate’s rates”. That is, of course, unless you’re dealing with a high-end retail jeweller that has some room to come off their brand mark-up. Cisecki says ADP follows auction results closely in order to keep on top of the prices, but the majority of its business is direct with the mines and the manufacturers. While auctions are the best way for investors to divest of their diamond assets, when purchasing a diamond margins are more competitive the closer you get to the source – basically, the less hands a stone passes through, the better for the end client, she says. “The general rule is that the closer you get to the mine, the better the price – as brokers, we seek stones from a global network of mines and manufacturers to ensure our clients receive the best possible price to meet their investment needs.” And it seems that while investment pieces for her clients are always her top priority, Cisecki admits to having a few stones in her sights for personal use. “Well, I’m a lady – I have my own, but I could always use more.” U nique Luxur y

THE INTERNET OF THINGS Your shower turns on as you walk into the bathroom, while your fridge is busy monitoring your food levels. It sounds like something out of Space Odyssey. But the truth is, soon we will all have access to this technology for our homes – and it’s called the Internet of Things.

U nique Luxur y

51

Wireless Audio 360 Speaker: Can connect and be controlled with a compatible smart mobile device to wirelessly stream music

F

ar from a whimsical and futuristic ideal, connected technology is here and changing the way we live in our homes.

Over the past year the Internet of Things - or IoT as it’s known has become a major talking point in the technology industry. At the centre of this is the concept of the connected or ‘smart home’.

While IoT might not control your home in the same manner as a HAL 9000 – conversing with you in dulcet tones over a sound system – a smart home will certainly transform the way you live day to day.

So what exactly is IoT? Essentially, it is a network of physical objects or ‘things’ embedded with electronics, sensors and network connectivity, enabling them to collect and exchange data. Objects like the humble garbage bin, toaster, fridge and even light switches can all talk and cooperate with each other through built-in WiFi and sensors to anticipate and meet your needs at home. With everything connected to one another, the sky is the limit. For example, the hallway lights could talk to the heating system when it senses you arriving home through the door - prompting the heat to turn on so your lounge room reaches optimal temperature before you have even set your bag down. In another instance, your fridge might text you after its internal cameras have spotted that the milk has run out or is past its used-by date. Meanwhile, after your alarm clock wakes you up in the morning it could alert the coffee maker to start brewing you a coffee. No longer do we need to imagine how a connected home could become the norm for Australian households. Connected appliances are becoming more and more popular as people begin to understand the potential of this technology and how it will impact their lives. In fact, IT research company Gartner has estimated 25 billion connected ‘things’ will be in use by 2020. That means three IoTready devices for every person on the planet. 52

Powerbot Robotic Vaccum Cleaner: Can connect and be controlled with a compatible smart mobile device to conveniently clean your home from virtually anywhere

IMPROVING WELLBEING The smart home is changing the role of technology in our lives with how it can now affect almost every aspect of it – even our own health and wellbeing. We already strap on smart watches and fitness bands to track our steps and heartbeats while out on a run - but what can technology at home do to help out our health? Every family has a combination of different health needs and smart homes can actually adapt accordingly to become more conscious of this. For example, take a family with a child who has a nut allergy. To help protect the child from exposure to nuts, scanners and RFID sensors can be used to track what products go into the fridge - informing the family if a food contains a dangerous allergen. This technology can even monitor our health while we are sleeping. Samsung’s SleepSense device - which launches in Australia in 2016 - sits under your mattress to measure your body movements, respiration and heart rate. It then uploads data to your smartphone app for you to review it the next day. Connected technology also has enormous potential to increase the safety of seniors living independently at home. Ultrasound-based technologies are already used in hospitals to locate and track patients. This technology can also be used in a home to detect a person’s activity and whether they have had a fall, alerting emergency services or nearby family members.

SAVING ENERGY With all of these connected devices popping up in our homes it is natural to wonder whether we will be using up more electricity than ever before. However, smart homes have the ability to actually monitor and conserve energy. Through sensing devices, homes will be able to learn when rooms are typically occupied and when they’re usually vacant – turning off any lights, heating or electrical appliances when not in use. Homes will not only remember where we go, but who used appliances and devices, how they used them and when – and will begin to respond to our routines. Additionally, the introduction of ‘smart meters’ to this technology is being developed to provide homeowners with real-time updates on energy usage.

SAMSUNG’S IOT OFFERING In Australia, there are now a variety of products that are WiFi enabled to provide a connected living experience. Samsung has a range of televisions, multiroom speakers and home appliances including washing machines, robotic vaccum cleaners, ovens and air conditioners that can be remotely controlled, and monitored through a mobile application on a compatible smart phone device. The Wireless Audio 360 Speakers for example, let you control where music is played throughout the house with a smartphone. Using the mobile app, you can play any digital track from your own personal collection or from a music streaming service like Pandora or Spotify. Already available in the United States and the United Kingdom, SmartThings is Samsung’s latest offering in IoT. The range of products available will include the Samsung SmartCam HD Pro that can stream video from your home to your phone or tablet, the SmartThings Presence Sensor that can alert you to movement inside your home and the SmartThings Moisture Sensor. “This technology brings home owners peace of mind, savings and convenience,” a Samsung spokesperson told Unique luxury. “It has been made to make our lives easier in every capacity. As we continue to see the uptake of IoT devices, this technology will become second nature.” When buying connected devices, Samsung says it is important to consider how they will fit into your lifestyle.

Crystal Blue Door Wi-Fi Washing Machine: Can connect and be controlled with a compatible smart mobile device to instantly start, or pause a cycle and keep an eye on remaining wash time

“If you are someone who is prone to losing your keys, investing in a smart lock that can be opened via your mobile phone could reduce frustration,” said a Samsung spokesperson. “Similarly, if you are living on a budget or work long hours, a fridge that can recommend a recipe with leftover ingredients will come in very handy.” As an open platform with a thriving ecosystem, the SmartThings hub will bring people freedom of choice in devices and limitless possibilities. BUND CLASSIC 2015 SHANGHAI, CHINA

U nique Luxur y

71

Keeping it spotless

T

he third edition of China’s most prestigious classic car event, held from 16th-20th October, proved a highpoint in the social calendar of the country’s most vibrant city, Shanghai. What better setting for beautiful vintage and classic cars to be exhibited than in the city which symbolises China’s emerging status as a place of sophistication and indeed as a luxury power house. And where better in Shanghai than the Bund, the iconic old finance centre, now home to all manner of high class restaurants and leading international brand retail outlets. I was staying at Shanghai’s shrine to the art deco movement, the Peace Hotel. The hotel, originally called the Cathay Hotel was built in 1929 by Sir Ellice Victor Elias Sassoon, Bart G.B.E. Sassoon was born in Naples, educated in the UK, spent much of his early life in India before moving to Shanghai. In Shanghai he utilised his immense fortune (the family was known as ‘the Rothschilds of the East’) developing the incredible array of monumental buildings that still grace the city to this day - the Bund. He died aged 80 in the Bahamas. A cosmopolitan man, he is a fitting figurehead for the city known as ‘the Paris of the East’, where it is said that he once owned as many as 1,800 properties in Shanghai. The Peace is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown. Shanghai today, with a population of over 25 million people is the largest city on the planet and rather overwhelming in its sheer size and scale. How pleasant then to be able on a sunny morning to take the short stroll along the riverside Promenade opposite the kaleidoscopic Pudong skyline to the beautiful WaitanYuan Villa next to the monolithic glamour of the Peninsula Hotel. The Villa is most probably situated in the prime location of this vast metropolis sighted as it is with an amazing view of the Bund and Huangpu

72

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

River. The former British Consulate and Consul’s residence, set in magnificent gardens with ancient trees, was renovated in 2010 and it was here that Shanghai’s creme de la creme of society and of the classic car movement gathered by the Bund. The 2015 Bund Classic boasted a collection of 35 classic and super cars, with 15 cars taking part in the cavalcade along the famous Bund and 13 cars in the Concours d’Elegance. There were over 50 exhibitors and sponsors including Taittinger, Vacheron Constantin, Michelin, and the wonderful reprised motoring apparel brand Suixtil, with 12,000 guests gracing the lawns which have changed little since the days prior to the great Revolution. This was a serious event; opening night saw 1,000 VIP guests, Saturday evening was a black-tie dinner for 300, and Sunday saw the chic picnic on the lawn. The sun shine with blue skies throughout the event, with no hint of the haze of pollution of which I had been forewarned. All who attended, both locals and expats from France, the Philippines, Hong Kong, UK, USA, Italy, Haiti, Kazakhstan, Singapore and many other ports of call, entered into the spirit of the event, ‘dressed to the nines’ and patronising the hospitality tents. To show how serious a car jamboree this was though, one needed to look no further than the esteemed panel of judges brought together from around the globe and led by Ms Sandra Button, the President of Pebble Beach, recognised as the world’s most important classic car event. For the first time at the Bund Classic, all of the cars entered into the annual Concours d’Elegance were owned by Chinese collectors, emphasising the exponential growth of the classic car community in the country. Sandra and her team

of judges, including Dr Adolfo Orsi, of Maserati fame and Chairman of Historica Selecta, former Chairman of FIVA Derek Drummond Bonzom, F1 driver Ma Qinghua, Carl Yuen of the Classic Car Club of HK, Horacio Pagani of the eponymous car manufacturer, and Singaporean motoring historian and publisher of Rewind Magazine Eli Solomon, chose the 1913 Cadillac Model 30 owned by Jason Huang as Best of Show 2015. The Chairman’s Award (and I assume it referred to Sandra Button rather than another great Chairman whose statute stands proudly just across the E.Zongsham No.1 road from the WaitanYuan Villa) went to a particular favourite of mine. Jin Bian picked up the trophy for his slightly temperamental dove grey 1956 Wolseley 15/15. It reminded me so much of the first car of which I have any recollection whatsoever. My dear departed father’s black Wolseley 15/50 registration ’53 CKJ’ (first registered in Kent where we lived). Jin Bian’s car was much further from home though having been first registered ’53 AYD’ in Somerset in the West of England before making its way to the Far East. What a coincidence that they both carried the same number 53!

The 1921 Rolls-Royce

The Parade heads out onto the Bund

Other vehicles in the Concours to win awards were the pretty 1939 BMW 321, the 1958 Jaguar Mk VIII and the red 1932 MG J2., with the people’s choice award going to the 1940 Cadillac Series 75. If truth be told (and I am a journalist, so it must!) the quality of the vehicles on display at the event was not of the very, very highest order as one might find at say Villa d’Este, but only if one is being very critical. Having this year attended Retromobile in Paris, Villa d’Este in Italy and Motorclassica in Melbourne, Australia, amongst other major international events, I can however truly state that the Bund Classic is absolutely first class and that I shall return in 2016. This is an event that will grow and develop as undoubtedly will the historic car scene in China and indeed throughout the Asian region. The collectors in China are much more astute than many realise and there are many more wonderful cars to be seen and appreciated in the years to come. Congratulations to the organisers China Rendez-Vous. Xièxie niī - thank you! U nique Luxur y

Fashion MeN’s

International fashion houses introduce antique hues and feminine detailing to keep the ‘70s vibe alive and well this spring/summer season.

Gucci This is the season that Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele truly came of age. Having only been gifted five days in which to create an interim men’s collection last season following his projection into the hot seat after the premature departure of former design head Frida Giannini, Michele’s Cruise 2016 offering affords the first chance the former accessories designer has had to show off his vision for the brand. Having been credited with setting the fashion agenda via his invention of a new Gucci geek (sometimes referred to as Glitter Geek) aesthetic, Michele keeps up the 1970s retro-inspired look of his fall/winter 2015 presentation in rather a drastic departure to the traditional Gucci man. Boasting what appears to be a softer and more romantic side than has previously been shown, Michele’s incarnation sees floral prints and detailing, combined with the label’s signature logo pattern and colours. He fully embraces a colour palette of rich antique blue, red, green and white hues with dandy layering, straight tailoring, bold prints and lengthened silhouettes dominating from a silhouette perspective. Key pieces this season include pompom hats, sportswear, floral and plaid print outerwear and patch-heavy blazers with wide-cut denim jeans, trench coats, pussy-bow shirts printed sweater vests and trench coats which feature alongside Gucci’s iconic leather loafers.

There is a type of serendipity in the fact Burberry’s chief creative officer (and CEO) Christopher Bailey was last month named as one of the first ever patrons of Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) in the UK. As just like the youthful talent in front of him, Bailey - who first showcased his own work at GFW in 1991 – has worked hard at redefining convention, especially when it comes to his level of artisanship. And his Spring/Summer 2016 offering is no exception. Appropriately titled Strait-Laced, he cleverly introduced the concept of using cotton lace as a core design element and then took it to extremes. You could see it everywhere - on shirts and ties and even as a collar on a trench as a timely way of updating a classic Burberry look. But this wasn’t the only first for the label, with Bailey also opting to send a host of female models down the catwalk showing spring/ summer 2016 Pre-Collection looks, marking the first time Burberry has included womenswear as part of it's menswear show. Utilising a palette of black, navy, charcoal, white, pale grey, brown, mustard, stone, red and splashes of turquoise in reference to an English summer, the collection was significantly less buttoned-up than its title would suggest with key pieces including double-faced cashmere topcoats, cashmere knitted joggers, lightweight down jackets and light wool/silk trench coats. In keeping with the very Britishness of the label, Bailey also chose to celebrate Burberry’s made-in-the-UK icons by including heritage trench coats that were made in Castleford and cashmere scarves made in Scotland.

Prada It would seem Miuccia Prada has a need, a need for speed. At least that was the impression she gave when showcasing her spring collection for men this season, alongside her resort collection for women. As with the women’s range, the men’s offering featured many emoticonesque motifs – rabbits, rockets, racing cars and red arrows among them with all alluding to some type of movement. The length of the short shorts on the men did nothing to dispel this “on the go” theory. Exuding a boyhood charm, topstitched shorts and zipped mock turtlenecks were seen on models who also had their shirts only parttucked and loose and their hair unbrushed – as if they had been scuttled out the door. The racing theme was further enhanced via a series of zip-up, all-in-one jumpsuits in navy with contrasting orange, yellow and red piping and when paired with sneakers with cut-out circles not dissimilar to an F1 uniform. Meanwhile contrasting twopiece suits had their place as did sculptured leather jackets. Colourful knits, straight-legged trousers and wide-shouldered tops and dress shoes paired with layered socks round out the collection.

The issue of self-sufficiency and autonomy are ones that have always resonated with Paul Smith. Whether designing across any one of his 14 lines for both men and women or fitting out stores in Los Angeles or Tokyo, the high-profile English designer has always sought to anticipate and spark off trends - both in fashion and in broader popular culture - and lace each with his own eccentric signature and distinctive character. As a result the only theme recurring through his eponymous label’s spring summer 2016 offering was that there wasn’t one. With no fixed silhouette for the season, every look appears different but is unified through tailoring, confident and positive use of colour and a free-spirited attitude. Inspired by the idea of independence, this season Smith has determined that colour and print should be king with a palette of blues, oranges and greens sitting alongside more tonal shades. Photographic print, which has been something of a mainstay during recent seasons, can be spotted throughout. Notable fabrics include lines layered with Lurex as seen on jackets and smocks, wide-weave polo shirts and polka-dot dyed suiting. Key pieces include satin jackets with embroidered cranes and a red silk Hawaiian shirt with embroidered monkeys. Watch out too for the ant pants and tee combo.

onvertible motor cars that look equally as good with the roof up or roof down are few and far between. One very exciting car that manages to achieve this, however, is the latest offering from Lamborghini. There is something tremendously invigorating about driving a Lamborghini, and I became aware of this when I took my first drive in the sensational V12 supercar from 1966 the Lamborghini Miura. 50 years on the Lamborghini Huracán LP 6104 Spyder launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show appears no less atmospheric or inspiring. Mind you, the Huracán Spyder as an open top car is to my mind a little bit of a confidence trick by the Factory at Sant’Agata Bolognese. I do not mean this in a bad way at all, for it is an absolutely stunning looking and performing car with the electrohydraulic lightweight soft-top up or down. It is just that the distance covered by this soft top from the large raked windscreen to the rear of the cockpit is not particularly large. So aerodynamic looking is the wedge shaped beauty of the Huracán Spyder that a roof seems almost superfluous unless one was sitting in a car park in the pouring rain. The car looks like a stealth fighter plane but without wings from the side silhouette profile, whilst front on its ‘face’ reminds one of a cartoon character frowning before it is about to unleash automotive mayhem. Its beautiful streamlining creates an effect of amazement for those who gaze upon it. If in 1957, the French philosopher, Roland Barthes famously described, “cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals”, then the Huracán Spyder could be described as the exact equivalent of today’s great modern weapons. Its naturally aspirated 5.2 litre V10 engine coupled to four-wheel powertrain and the Lamborghini Double Friction 7-speed dual clutch gearbox with Variable Drive Select Mode (Road, Sport, Race) means that the LP 610-4 Spyder is capable of amazing technological feats and stunning performance. It can travel from 0 - 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, 0 - 200 km/h in 10.2 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 324 km/h, which in old currency is over 200 mph! The chassis is a hybrid construction of aluminium and carbon fibre, whilst the beautiful body shell form outer skin is made

104

w w w.uni quees t at es. co m. a u

of aluminium and composite materials. Make no mistake, this car’s shape is not just some classy Italian designer’s doodle on the back of a Nastro Azzuro beer mat brought to life in between sipping Aperol Spritzers and ordering a pair of hand made shoes on line. Every scoop, detail, line, curve, edge, shape on the car has come about to enhance performance and to endeavour to redefine the supercar as we approach the end of the second decade of the 21st Century. Its predecessor, the Gallardo Spyder was Lamborghini’s best selling open top model in the Company’s history. The Huracán Spyder appears a vastly superior vehicle with its very lightweight chassis providing over 40% improved torsional stiffness than the Gallardo. In terms of downforce, the Huracán Spyder, with its fully flat and smooth underbody linked to diffuser and integrated spoiler, exceeds the Gallardo by 50 %. It is an aerodynamic, streamlined tour de force. This incredible convertible hyper car does not stint on quality or luxury either. Drive and passenger comfort is the order of the day, whether roof is closed or open, though of course this is not like sitting in one’s favourite armchair. Everything and anything in the cockpit, including the razor sharp instrument display have been specifically designed for improving the driving experience, whilst cosseted in Alcantara or fine nappa leather. One particular detail that appealed to me is the virtual rev counter needle: it is recalculated 60 times per second to ensure it flows completely smoothly even when the car is being driven under fearsome full acceleration. Finally, what of that soft top. It is available in black, brown and red, and is opened electro-hydraulically via a button positioned on the central tunnel. At a driving speed of up to 50 km/h, the hood opens in just 17 seconds. Keep the back window up to act as a windshield or have it down so that one can experience the full aural pleasure of the Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder as it eats up the road. “On days like these”, as Matt Monroe warbled over the top of a Miura at the beginning of The Italian Job movie, the choice is all yours.

A Swiss watchmaker carefully details the brand's The New World timepiece

T

here can be few greater joys in life for a fine watch connoisseur than to land a role heading one of the oldest and most prestigious timepiece labels in the world. Which is why 48-year-old Italian-born Antonio Calce, who holds degrees in microtechnology and management studies, is today a very happy man. Speaking just weeks ahead of his first Australian visit since taking over as chief executive of Sowind, the brand’s parent company back in January, Calce admits being entrusted with the guardianship of Girard-Perregaux - a label whose history dates back two centuries is something of a dream come true. “I am a person dedicated to the products and craftsmanship, [I am also] a fine watches enthusiast and as a passionate person I have a collection that I cherish. From the beginning I was excited to undertake this new challenge for a company deserving deep respect in the watch industry. The watch industry is the place where the essence of beauty comes across the mechanical expertise, which explains my deep fascination for this field.” The origins of the label can be traced back to 1791 and pocket watchmaker Jean-Francois Bautte, a craftsman the history books will refer to as a man on a constant quest for precision. Bautte, who was a goldsmith but also trained in case assembly and guilloché application, created a manufacturing company in Geneva becoming the first watchmaker to combine the entire watch making process – from the engineering of the watch to the final hand assembly and polishing of each piece - under one roof. The label was quick to establish a high quality industrial and cultural heritage, regularly receiving recognition for its achievements in chronometry, the science of accurate time measurement, from the early 1800s.

In 1852 Constant Girard founded the Girard & Cie, later renaming the entity Girard-Perregaux following his marriage to Marie Perregaux. In the early 1900s Constant Girard’s son Constant Girard-Gallet, took over the Bautte House and merged it with Girard-Perregaux & Cie. Today Girard-Perregaux continues to design, create, develop and produce both the external components of a watch and its “heart” the movement in its manufacture, from its La Chaux-de-Fonds base in Switzerland, just south of the French border. Calce says the label’s core follower tends to be a watch enthusiast, not unlike himself, who holds a deep interest in mechanical watchmaking. Regarded as among the world’s best for its watch-making craftsmanship and technical abilities, Girard-Perregaux’s design capabilities have also helped to set the company apart with its most prominent piece entitled “Tourbillon with three gold bridges” winning global acclaim. First patented by Girard senior in 1884, the three bridges were redesigned in the form of arrows and placed parallel to each other. Nearly a century later Girard-Perregaux decided to make 20 pieces to conform to the original, requiring 1500 hours of work to create just the first one. To celebrate its bicentenary in 1991, the company created a miniature wristwatch version. In 2013, the brand was awarded the Aiguille d’Or at the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix for its groundbreaking Constant Escapement LM timepiece that took five years to build. Presented in a round 18kt white gold case and featuring an alligator leather strap with 18kt white gold buckle, an off-centre open-worked dial with black hands, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, the watch certainly looked the part but it was what went on beneath the face that truly made it a stand out. The Tourbillon Minute Repeater with Gold Bridges

The timepiece was the first of its kind to introduce true constant force – meaning the watch will beat at a constant rate no matter how much power remains in its barrels, something of a revolution at the time. Calce says while not every piece produced by Girard-Perregaux requires that degree of technical engineering, the process can take anywhere from 16 months for a “quite simple development” to five years for a complex piece depending on the type of product being designed. “The process starts with an inspiration, which must be in line with a coherent and sustainable product strategy. The project becomes real when the design blends in perfectly with the technical expertise,” he says. Rather than anoint a design head, Calce says the brand prefers to take a collaborative approach to the products it produces with its inhouse research and development at the core of its design philosophy. “We continue to develop and realise products in-house with a commitment to innovation and excellence. An internal development team has the mission to develop all the new watches: a part of this team is dedicated to movements development another team group is more focused on dial, straps and cases. This is a team project gathering dozens of skilled professionals and craftsmen.” It is for these reasons the brand commands an entry-level price point of around $10,930 while its more expensive pieces retail for upwards of $1.5 million. Calce says each timepiece has more than 100 “crafts” to become a work of art. Some pieces, such as the label’s Chamber of Wonders, require more than 50 hours solely for the dial. “Beveling and polishing one of our iconic Gold Bridges takes three days for a traditional top-of-the-range finishing, the main plates and bridges in particular are finished and decorated, even if their surface is covered and hidden by other components.” It’s Cat’s Eye High Jewellery watch collection features 50 carats of precious stones – including no fewer than 645 emerald cut white diamonds with one rose cut diamond embedded in the crown - and takes more than 120 man hours to create. Calce says he doesn’t concern himself with the unique challenges involved in producing items for such a discerning audience. “We do not think in that way, we try to produce an emotion that remains our main challenge. Of course, we’re careful about producing the right product with the right price.” In fact part of Calce’s remit in taking up the new role is to give the brand a new lease of life and make sure “everybody knows what Girard-Perregaux is”.

In accordance he plans to develop what he describes as “product families” which will see the launch of new watches at tiered pricing levels based on the company’s high-end models. “Today, our strategy is to build our collections vertically, within strong families of competitive products in line with the brand’s identity. You’ll discover soon… some new products that were missing until now in important segments. This year for the first time ever the 1966 [collection] will be unveiled in steel [instead of gold].” Currently its Three Gold Bridges design is only available in haute horlogerie with the tourbillon (an addition to the mechanics of a watch that transfers energy to the timekeeping element and allows the number of its oscillations to be counted). However Calce says the company is now working on new models, including two-gold and one-gold bridge timepieces, in order to make the brand more accessible to a wider audience. In addition he has made it something of a pet project to use the brand’s museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which he claims is underutilised, as a way to explain the company’s history. There are also a host of activities planned for the next year with the birth of an “exclusive piece”, the details of which remain under wraps, as well as a tribute to the brand’s antique Esmeralda in commemoration of its 225th anniversary. The company joined the Richemont Group and Audemars Piguet to form The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie in 2005 to promote fine watchmaking internationally. The Foundation, through its activities, fosters and promotes Fine Watchmaking’s values of creativity, culture and tradition. As the gold standard of how remaining true to your values can help aid your longevity, Calce says it is important that the company – and the entire Swiss watch industry for that matter - continues to communicate its pedigree. Calce recently told The Financial Times that it’s important to let people know that when they purchase a Girard-Perregaux Swissmanufactured timepiece, they were aware that what they were really purchasing was a durable piece of art. “It is not a trend. It is the acquisition of craftsmanship, of an exclusive product.” The high-end watch industry is beyond compare, certainly with the likes of today’s aspirational time pieces – such as smart watches. “The positioning of Girard-Perregaux is totally different from smart watches. When [our clients] choose a Girard-Perregaux, they choose codes of elegance and tradition. “A mechanical watch has a heart.” U nique Luxur y

AGE SHALL NOT WEARY HER She has transcended time, war and global financial meltdowns yet the true strength of French brand Galeries Lafayette lies in her proud heritage as much as it does the international retailer’s ability to innovate, as Tracey Porter discovers.

A

ja Barbo Gruden had earned the right to be a little disinterested.

Not only had she spent a gruelling 23-hours plus flying half around the world for work, she had then spent all three days since landing talking non-stop about her place of employ. But there she stood, animated, poised and more than capable of tackling any questions that a noisy group of excitable journalists cared to throw at her. But given Gruden’s role is as national sales manager of one of the most prestigious department stores in the world, and her job is to explain just how many unexpected treats lie in store for its customers, she would perhaps find it a harder task sating her excitement. For there is much to share about the goings on behind the world’s most instantly recognisable department store chain. Having remained in private ownership for five generations, Galeries Lafayette is the place where every shopper wants to be seen and every brand wants to be admired. Founded in 1893 by cousins Théophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn, it has grown from a simple 70m² haberdashery to a 64-store colossus with an international footprint operating across several different markets with Berlin, Beijing, Jakarta, Casablanca and Dubai among them. Gruden says from its humble beginnings in 1859, Galeries Lafayette has always strived to combine luxurious fashion and innovation. When the store was still in its infancy, its co-founder Bader decided he needed to do something to ensure his store stood out from rivals. Eager to remain true to his philosophy of stocking only the most envied fashions, he set up and acquired production facilities to make clothing exclusively for Lafayette under its own private label.

premises and buildings in the neighbourhood, including the one on Boulevard Haussmann. A champion of fashion in all its forms, Lafayette encouraged young designers to launch their ready-to-wear lines, by agreeing to showcase them in small boutiques or concessions. A tradition that continues to this day. The first designer to hit the big-time was Sonia Rykiel and soon other big names followed including Daniel Hechter, Pierre Cardin, Cacharel, Yves Saint-Laurent and Dorothée Bis. Today Lafayette’s flagship store, still located on Paris’ boulevard Haussmann and noted for its 43-metre neo-Byzantine glass dome, is the destination of choice for up to 100,000 shoppers each day - on par with that other famous Parisian tourist attraction, the Louvre. Home to a raft of international brands including Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Bottega Veneta, Fendi and Prada, these days the site consists of three buildings. The first has nine levels, half of which are dedicated to women and children’s fashion and accessories (known locally as Coupole) and atop of which sits the Terrace. The second, L’Homme, has four floors of menswear and accessories while the third (Maison & Gourmet) has five floors and includes homewares and an entire floor given to a luxury food market. Gastronomy is also an area of focus for both staff and visitors alike with the Paris buildings housing 20 different eateries and dining areas where brands such as Le Pain Quotidien sit alongside a French-style tea parlour or a Japanese canteen. In addition Lafayette’s La Cave space is a 450m² area dedicated entirely to wines, spirits and champagnes that stocks more than 2500 different wine labels across 20,000 bottles.

To ensure the store was always up-to-date, Bader would go to the races and the opera, accompanied by a designer, who would discreetly copy the most stylish outfits designed by the most famous couturiers and put them into production as quickly as possible.

For those for whom art and culture are a priority Lafayette’s main Parisian store also has Galerie des Galeries, a free-entry art gallery dedicated to exhibiting the cross-over between art, fashion and design. Fashion shows are staged once a week here while the gallery boasts a new exhibition every 12 weeks. In addition make up and perfume workshops are also held to ensure customers are kept abreast of the latest international trends.

Constant diversification was key. Appearing in addition to the traditional aisles were men’s tailoring, furnishings, toys and tableware. In 1896, the renters become owners of the building and set up over five floors. The two cousins quickly purchased shops,

Gruden says while all visitors are welcome, the chain has made a concerted effort to welcome those for whom French is not their first language by introducing English-speaking concierges specifically for foreign visitors. U nique Luxur y

In terms of rolling out the red carpet, few do it better. While all visitors are welcome, VIP customers enjoy extra special attention with a personal shopper service available as well as use of a 400 square metre suite where everything from dinner parties to tax refunds can be accessed. As men are a growing segment for the retailer, Gruden says Lafayette has also launched a men’s concierge to complement its male VIP Jazz lounge where men are able to recline with a whiskey and kick back while their partners shop. Yet despite being considered the grand dame of European department store shopping and posting retail sales in excess of €3.8 billion, the family-owned group behind the brand are eager to keep pushing ahead. 134

In keeping with his employer’s vision for the company, CEO Nicolas Houzé recently launched what he calls his “Ambitions 2020” plan, a strategy that its owners hope will see it becoming the key omnichannel fashion retailer in France and in international capitals. It kicked off in September when the brand announced it had parted ways with its advertising agency of 14 years, and moved its account to Wednesday, the same UK agency responsible for Net-A-Porter’s marketing activities. The pairing has resulted in the brand unveiling a new logo, better aligned to the modern day retailer than the 25-yearold one it replaced. “We didn’t want to do the same [as we’d always done],” Gruden says. “We wanted to be different.” To help align to what the company terms its “reappraisal of our

brand territory” while remaining true to its 123-year heritage, it has also launched a new “Le Nouveau Chic” advertising campaign that has employed a series of ambassadors including musician Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis, models Camille Rowe and Anais Mali, chef Pierre Jancou, dancers/choreographers Laurent and Larry Bourgeois and prima ballerina Marie-Agnes Gillot, all of whom the owners feel embody the true spirit of the retailer. To celebrate the launch, the store also added 150 brands to its stable, engaged Louis-Gabriel Nouchi, a finalist at the 2014 Hyères Fashion Festival, to produce an exclusive capsule collection for the Galeries Lafayette private label and undertook an extensive revamp of its online store. Further plans include an extensive renovation of the men’s store at the flagship site while new stores are slated for Istanbul, Doha, Milan and the city of love’s own Champs Elysees. On average there has been a 10 percent year-on-year increase in the number of Australian visitors hosted by the chain. Yet despite the obvious affection for the brand Gruden says there are no plans yet to open down under. “Australians who are travelling are very important to us. Maybe, one day we will open a store here,” she says. U nique Luxur y

5 da ys of motoring

MADNESS

T

he 15th Dubai International Motor Show held at the Dubai World Trade Centre in the UAE is one grand affair. Spread over many exhibition halls it is a taxing event to attend. By the end of the ‘5 days of motoring madness!’ as it is dubbed by the organisers, one’s feet are very tired and so are one’s eyes! There is just so much to cover and so much automotive eye-candy on offer it is nigh on impossible to assimilate it all. It seems, though, with 1.32 million new cars sales across the Gulf in the first nine months of 2015 that the local buyers just cannot get too much of a good thing. The desire and passion for cars in this part of the world would appear insatiable, after all even the local police force get to drive Bentley, Porsche, Nissan GTR and souped up BMWs as patrol cars! With world firsts and many many regional launches (upwards of 150 vehicles debuted at the show) it is the biggest event in town even when the Dubai Airshow is taking place at the same time. There is of course something for everyman with new look VW Beetle Cabriolet, MX5 and Fiat 500, but it is the big boys who hold sway in the rich desert Emirates. Not only big, but fast colourful and expensive is the order of the day. Ford had a global debut for its latest iteration of the Shelby GT350 Mustang, though it was its stunning GT Concept Car that drew most attention on this stand. Other American manufacturers such as Lincoln and Cadillac were also very prominent and like Lexus showed off new large crossovers. As interesting as these marques may be, it would seem though that the traditional British names are very much in vogue. Aston Martin, Jaguar Land Rover with its Spectre James Bond display featuring three actual vehicles from the latest 007 film complete with dirt and dents, but above all Bentley. Bentley with the 4.1 second to 100 km/h behemoth Bentayga due to arrive in the UAE in March 2016 seemed to be attracting the utmost attention. Certainly there was never a shortage of aspiring owners climbing in and out of the luxury interior of the gold coloured example on central display. For my money though the Range Rover is still the one.

The Ford GT concept

The SUV is definitely very popular here but I am sure that most of them undertake a desert trek about as often as a Welsh pit pony out gallops a thoroughbred Arabian stallion. Even so, Nissan has a special Desert Edition Patrol made exclusively for the region, whilst Toyota went to great lengths to celebrate the anniversary of its legendary Landcruiser. Bespoke and special editions are also popular and the likes of after-market tuning company Brabus had some interesting and extreme offerings of super luxury vehicles including Mercedes-Benz of course. All of the stands were big and bold endeavouring to entice a new buyer, being it for a mundane family car or an armoured-car - the nearest thing one can get to owning a tank and being able to drive it on the road for private use. But not all of the stands were overtly conspicuous, and it was interesting to find Rolls-Royce understatedly tucked away 146

w w w.uni quees t at es. co m. a u

in a corner and almost overpowered by the very popular and increasingly luxurious offerings of BMW. BMW seems to hold sway in the region for the rich, but for the uber-wealthy, Rolls-Royce, even without an SUV (yet) is the business. Whilst the public awaits ‘Project Cullinan’, destined to provide motoring that is “Effortless… Everywhere”, Rolls-Royce as ever commands attention. Along with the beautiful new convertible Rolls-Royce Dawn unveiled at the Show, two exceptional ‘specials’ were also exhibited. If a ‘normal’ hand-built Rolls-Royce from England is not sufficiently exclusive enough, local R-R distributor AGMC in conjunction with and the blessing of the Factory has arranged for two one-offs to be created at Goodwood. An extension of the Maharaja Series, there is only one each of the Rolls-Royce Ghost Golf and Phantom Coupé Tiger. Two-tone is back and it is to die for.

Taking a break!

Another highlight of this most impressive show was the ‘pop-up’ Motoring Nostalgia Museum. Featured for the first time at the show, this section had a street-food market, live music, and master craftsmen at work including The Cobbler creating classic luxury shoes with a modern twist. The cars exhibited from collectors including HH Sheikh Hasher Bin Juma Al Maktoum and Dr Mohammed Ben Sulayem offered all the usual suspects from the last 40 years of classics - 300SL Gullwing, Contact, DB4, E-Type, Carrera RS 2.7 lightweight, Pullman 600 - just name it. Surely, the most exciting offerings though had to be from Alvis and David Brown. Yes, you read that correctly. The Alvis Car Company was established in Coventry in 1920 and this year announced its new range of limited edition Continuation Series

models. Built from the original 1936 design drawings but utilising new technology, Alvis offered a remarkable collection of four vehicles. The Autocar Magazine in 1937 described Alvis as “super cars”, perhaps the first time this now much overused term was coined. The new Speedback GT from David Brown Automobiles just up the road from Alvis in Coventry is without doubt though a modern supercar for the 21st Century. There has been much conjecture and discussion in the specialist motoring press about its 1960s styling and antecedents, and even talk of law suits. Having witnessed the vehicle for myself, this is a superb and original motor car, albeit based upon Jaguar XKR underpinnings. It is drop dead gorgeous and for me the classy star of Arabia of this Dubai International Motor Show. U nique Luxur y

Burberry Prorsum

As both CEO and chief creative at one of the UK’s most high profile luxury brands, Christopher Bailey knows all too well the idea of producing specific collections to tailor for traditional seasons is uneconomical in a global economy. Which may go some of the way to explaining why those lucky enough to have been present for the house’s spring summer 2016 collection launch will have seen ‘40s-inspired slips paired with mink coats as well as light summer trenches. Aptly titled Functionregalia and expected to make its Australian debut in stores in January, the new season offering sees Bailey produce edgy sportswear, classic coats, functional pieces and delicate vintage-inspired eveningwear cut with militaristic details throughout. Key silhouettes include duffle coats, trenches, biker and military jackets as well as fluid dresses, soft kilts and structured shift dresses. Peacoats come studded with brass regimental buttons while satin silk skirts are finished with metallic cording reminiscent of a soldier’s uniform and were in fact made by the same embroiderers that decorate the coats of the Queen’s Guard. Fabrics include weatherproof silks double-faced cashmeres, macramé lace while detail is evidenced across flicked polka dots and Swarovski crystal tie-die artwork on silk.

“I wanted an idea of freedom, playfulness and individuality to come to the fore.” So noted artistic director Raf Simons when reflecting on the inspiration behind Dior’s 2016 Cruise collection. The words take on extra significance in light of the fact Simons has since announced his intention to leave the fashion house but for those lucky enough to procure a piece of Simons’ last collection for the brand, there is much to admire. Launched at Pierre Cardin’s striking Palais Bulles (or Bubble Palace as it is better known) in the French Riviera, Simons has taken his cue for this season from the colours, textures and light of the Cote d’Azur - along with the style of the people who have inhabited it. A-line silhouettes, thigh-skimming hemlines, checks and striking metallic fabrics feature prominently with overlaid netting on some pleated underskirts a subtle nod to the area’s maritime history. Down-to-earth utilitarian garments are contrasted against those of true Dior elegance - such as taffeta shorts or a black Bar pantsuit where a mix of styles, patterns, textures and techniques evoke the multi-layered world of the South. A bias cut evening gown and shimmering, crystal-florals easily sit alongside crochet, smocking and patchworked pieces with land, sky and seascapes appearing in collaged Lurex fabrics, affording them an organic edge.

Prada

As the first lady of Italian fashion Miuccia Prada has always walked to the beat of her own drum. This season the Prada head designer continued to extol her belief that men’s and women’s fashions should not be segregated so peppered her men’s spring 2016 show in Milan with looks from her women’s resort 2016 collection. Prada’s penchant for mixing prints and textiles were evident throughout the women’s range with ‘60s-inspired skirts, sweaters and knee socks printed with rabbits, race cars, spaceships, arrows and eyes. Stripes and eye motifs also found their place, with the playful patterns adding a youthful vibe to the overall look and feel of the collection. This appeared in stark contrast to the collection’s easy silhouette where shift dresses were layered over long sleeve tops and rumpled sweaters tucked into print-blocked skirts while textures came in various forms – some knitted and soft, whilst others were dark, with leather and snakeskin adding a classic edge in keeping with the ‘80s nightclub feel of the collection. Skirts covered in oversized grommets and sequinned coats added an aura of extravagance to the collection.

If buildings could talk, how the walls of Paris’ Palais d’Iena would open up their lungs and sing. For it was here Miuccia Prada was inspired to take piece of 1930s architecture usually used for an assembly that advises French lawmaking bodies on questions of social and economic policies, and turn it into her very own nightclub – a fitting venue to present the house’s Resort 2016 collection and launch the first ever Miu Miu fragrance. Offering a fresh update on an older look was a key theme in the new season range with Prada drawing inspiration from a variety of ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘80s influences. Poodle skirts (yes, poodle skirts!) from the 1950s were stamped with July 2015 dates in the style of a club poster while printed blouses and eyelets appeared on the bottom of 60s-style print shift dresses. Eclectic styling in the form of blouses worn over clashing print and colour garments was there for all to see while reference was also made to Miu Miu’s spring 2010 collection debut where key items were given a rock and roll edge and mixed in with latex and leather with stripes and snakeskin. Graphic stripes paired with metallic and skirts featuring geometric cut-offs were contrasted with boxy jackets for a playful effect, with the overall look well and truly bringing the brand’s unique party handprint to the resort season.

Gucci

After more than a decade waiting in the wings, Gucci’s newly installed creative director Alessandro Michele set out to be daring in this, his second women’s ready-to-wear collection for the brand. The Roman-born designer, who has worked at the Italian fashion house since 2002, began by moving the launch of the fashion house’s traditional setting away from Milan and into the heart of New York’s art district – the first since 2006 the fashion house has held its Resort launch in the Big Apple. The show started with a chevronstripe long-sleeved dress but from there Michele’s quest for nostalgia really began to take shape. Pussy-bow blouses, cropped vintagestyle coats made an appearance as did knife-pleated lace skirts and frilly chiffon mini-dresses in pastel shades. In addition long-sleeved evening dresses with tiered chiffon ruffles were teamed with black velvet bows and coloured corsages at the neck. The 60s and 70s came alive in the collection with knits, mod, thigh-high mini dresses, skirt suits, fur and lace all making an appearance. Bold colours, sheer gowns and unexpected prints were also introduced while embroidered patches with animal motifs including tigers, serpents and bumblebees completed Michele’s retro nod.

F

rom a bare cow paddock in 1983 to a beautiful rainforest botanical garden, this is potentially one of the best personal environmental projects in the Byron Shire: a totally unique property.

The first of some 20,000 rainforest plants were planted on Christmas Day 1983 and, as with all botanical gardens, this property will only improve in value as it matures. This will be a truly unique legacy to pass on through the generations or an amazing environmental investment property to on-sell in the future. The gardens have been established around the ideal central main house site, well away from the boundaries and protected from wind and the summer sun, yet benefitting from the warmth of the winter sun. Here you can build your dream home, subject to council approval,

potentially up to three levels because of the site topography with room also for a three to four car garage. A 200m long tree and palm lined driveway leads to a turning circle with space for another two car garage and workshop or shed. Three phase power is already connected to the property. With the exception of the main house site, the entire 5 acres (approx.) is your garden with the feel of a peaceful and tranquil national park. The body of water on the property has been landscaped to give the illusion that there is a river heading off into the distance. All the rainforested areas require no mowing, brush cutting and little to no weeding. The combination of rainforest and a body of water has created a wellestablished habitat for over a hundred observed species of both land based animals and bird species, there is also a breeding Koala colony. The annual movie star-packed Sundance Film Festival has made sure of that, a week-long Hollywood extravaganza attracting worldwide attention each January. But now teamed with the might of the largest ski company in the US, Vail Resorts, the quaint former mining settlement becomes virtually irresistible for both skiers and non-skiers seeking the luxury in an alpine setting. There are so many tempting distractions amid Park City’s streets and surrounds they can pose even stiff competition for its own ski field. Pretty Victorian buildings hide big city sophistication behind their historic exteriors. Boutiques, art galleries and restaurants – including Zoom owned by Sundance founder and actor Robert Redford (and named after the camera lens in case you were wondering) line sidewalks, along with beautiful hotels and cosy five star lodges. When heavyweight ski industry giant Vail Resorts arrived a few years ago it set off, a modern-day version of the silver and gold boom that saw Park City flourish in the 1860s. The company quickly snapped up Park City’s ski field and neighboring resort The Canyons before executing a $50 million masterstroke to link the two fields during summer 2015, all ready for winter 2016/17.

The resulting 2954ha field has a new gondola, upgraded lifts, a new restaurant and other improved infrastructure – not to mention such a vast variety of runs and activities as to make the mind boggle. There are enough slopes across PCMR’s scenic peaks to keep rank beginners to fearless experts happy. Must-do’s are the exhilarating alpine slide rollercoaster-style ride, and in an adjoining valley, the longest zip-line in the country. Schuss to the ski-in ski-out High West Distillery, drink whisky and vodka and feast on excellent local fare in the saloon. Unique and excellent dining can be found at The Farm over near the Canyons village. The multi-award winning restaurant serves the finest of local produce with an inventive twist, with a wine list to match. The Riverhorse on Main Street is famous for its steaks, lobster and other stunning fare. There is much to do outside of the townships as well. Take a drive about 20 minutes down valley to the fascinating Utah Olympic Park built for the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Games. Join a tour, and then tick off the bucket list experience of riding the 2002 Olympic bobsled track (about $A200). Highly recommended, the 100km/hr-plus downhill run (three passengers behind a professional driver) is thrilling. For visitors who love their luxury goods, setting aside a half or full day for an expedition to the Tanger Factory Outlets is imperative. Virtually anything you want or need is in the enormous complex – brands like Coach, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Nike, Calvin Klein are at every turn.

Park City is also renowned for being the most easily accessed ski mountain destination in the US. Town is a mere 35 minute drive from Salt Lake City Airport. Luxury accommodation can be found at the Waldorf Astoria. It is the first of the revered chain to be established outside a major US city, and its arrival in 2011 was yet another sign this region was on the rise. Float down the hall to your suite then relax in a sea of down on the king sized bed while overlooking the mountains from which you have descended moments ago. Enjoy a spa and a sumptuous meal or be chauffeur driven into town where the delights of Park City await. Another favorite is the Sky Lodge, a contemporary 33-suite hotel with an elegant rooftop cocktail bar, heated deck and Jacuzzi. Upscale and edgy, it holds a Zen meditation room, and offers suites with pool tables and balcony hot tubs.

Australia Wins Making PCMR extremely attractive for Australian skiers is Vail Resorts’ unbeatable ticket – the Epic Australia Pass – offered as a result of the company’s acquisition of Perisher ski resort this year. The Epic Australia Pass currently costs only $A799 for virtually full-season access to 11 international resorts in the northern hemisphere’s 2016/17 season plus Perisher, 2016 winter. Resorts covered include, of course, PCMR, plus Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado; and Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in the Lake Tahoe area of California and Nevada. The pass also includes 10 days at Vail or Beaver Creek in Colorado, or a combination of the two.
