estled amongst the magnificent Mt Macedon tree tops, this contemporary architectural masterpiece brings a new dimension to a historic estate. Originally a two storey Victorian block weather board house commissioned in 1862 by Charles Cogger, the owner of the transport company on the mountain, the home and stables were demolished in 1960 paving the foundation for this stunning property. The Laurels is aptly named after the laurel hedge on the northern border of the 2 acres of low maintenance established grounds. The Laurels offers style and contemporary polish. A desirable, state-of-the-art, family home boasting generous proportions and infinite design with 4 spacious bedrooms and separate self-contained studio or B&B to enjoy throughout all the seasons. A grey sandstone main entrance awaits leading into an impressive gallery space with soaring ceilings splaying into multiple living areas. The upper level offers a private home cinema retreat, open plan kitchen and full size bar presenting Siemens appliances and ceasar stone benchtops. A spacious dining/open plan living with double sided wood fire feature and large separate balcony invites you to relax and enjoy the expansive views to Mt Towrong. Offering a flexible floor plan and an abundance of natural light throughout, the 2nd staircase leads to a study or bedroom and a 4th bedroom featuring built in robes and ensuite. A stylish separate formal dining with integrated wine racks and living area complimented with a wood heater fireplace complete the multiple living zones. A full size classic French Provincial kitchen fulfills all your needs with a Belfast dual sink, Ilve oven and a separate laundry. Outside, a louvred paved BBQ area and Japanese pond add the final flourish to designer styling set within private grounds. An indoor pool, spa and gymnasium (gas and solar heated) accessing a raised deck, provides an entertainer's delight to while away the hours in a truly luxurious unique indoor/outdoor space. An easy 45 minute commute to Melbourne CBD, renowned as Australia’s garden of Eden, Mt Macedon is interspersed with beautiful seasonal colouring and pure mountain air. Unique LuxurLuxur y 9y U nique

John Cutler is a gentleman’s gentleman who, for over half a centur y, has toiled at the helm of his family ’s bespoke suiting business. By Tracey Porter - images courtesy of Richard Weinstein

T

o label it a dream would be doing it a great disservice yet to call it a vision, even more so.

Because the concept that J.H Cutler's principal, John Cutler, intends bringing to fruition is both of these things but also much, much more. It is, for all intents and purposes, a legacy and one that has been more than 50 years in the making. John Handel Lawson Cutler was just a teenager when he was first inducted into the family business started by his great grandfather, Joseph Handel Cutler, in 1884. Having grown up in a household where the important men in his life were always impeccably dressed, he struggles to recall a time when any other vocation was considered. The first piece of clothing he ever completed was a jerkin, a short sleeveless men’s jacket lined with hand-stitched silk and constructed from hide sourced by one of his classmates. Yet at just 15 and a half, while his friends completed their schooling, John spent his mornings at the coalface in the J.H Cutler workroom in Sydney, learning about the intricacies of garment construction as well as the more mundane tasks of bookkeeping and selling. Shortly after, he left the safe confines of home to study at the renowned, Tailor and Cutter Academy in London, before honing his craft at the home of bespoke tailoring – Mayfair’s Savile Row. He was just 27 years of age when named managing director of the family business following the retirement of his father Bruce.

Today, John's reputation as a master tailor is so strongly forged among the big end of town that everyone from the international social elite to Australia’s best known politicians, entertainers, sports commentators and legal professionals have his suits, shirts and trousers in their ever expanding wardrobes. Yet, as he first acknowledged 20 years ago, bespoke tailoring in the truest sense is a dying art. For this reason, John still goes to great lengths to ensure that he does the bulk of the contact work with all of his clients. “My grandfather used to say ‘you have to fit the mind just as much as the body’. Half of my job is getting into people’s heads and trying to understand what the commission is that they’re giving me. “I can make something that is technically brilliant but if it doesn’t fit the person’s mind, if it’s not what they want, it doesn’t matter how good it is, they won’t be happy with it.” Tailoring has provided John with more than just a place of work. It has fulfilled a creative compulsion as well as provided him with an outlet through which he has been able to indulge his passion for people – in all their shapes and forms. Yet still he wants more. For more than a decade now, John has harboured a desire to create a small collection of clothing he sees as “the ultimate expression of a tailor’s art form”.

“The ultimate means an ultimate expression but it also means an ultimate quality. What I’m doing could be compared to any art form. It’ll be made as a sculptor would make a sculpture, as a painter would make a painting, as any artisan could do. If you want to relate it to fashion - it’s not fashion – but if you had to relate it to fashion it would be more catwalk than showroom. Not something that people might wear but directional and conceptual.” The seed was planted in 2006 when he was commissioned by wine executive, Keith Lambert, to produce a piece that global media would later term ‘the most precious coat in the world’. John had waited years to find the right client in which to craft a garment from the precious vicuña wool he had in his possession. Woven from the gossamer fleece of the vicuña, a rare camel-like creature found only in the wilds of the Andes Mountains in South America, he had secured the fabric from one of J.H Cutler’s long-term fabric suppliers nearly two decades earlier. Taking months from conception to creation, Lambert’s made-tomeasure navy blue coat brought together the very best elements a humble Sydney tailor could offer his most discerning client. It was lined with Italian silk, had buttons crafted from Indian water buffalo horn and was trimmed with an 18 carat gold plaque created exclusively by master engraver John W Thompson. Everything, from cutting to sewing, was completed by hand.

Such was public interest in the coat, author Meg Lukens Noonan later wrote a book about it – The Coat Route: Craft, Luxury and Obsession, on the trail of a $50,000 coat. Taking its cue from the coat concept but upping the ante in terms of exclusivity, John sees The Ultimate Collection as a range of five or six garments spread across three tiers, which together represent an inspirational fusion of art and craft. While some of the finer details are yet to be worked out – including the exact shape, form and structure of garments – John says there is likely to be a handmade three-piece suit, blouson, silk trousers with perhaps a smoking jacket and a top coat included in the mix. As a man whose attention to detail is legendary – he has built into his walking stick a vessel containing his aftershave and once made a jacket for himself with space in the lapel to carry chopsticks - the devil will of course be in the detail. And to this end at least, the concept is well advanced. “If you’re going to make a good cake you’ve got to have the best flour, the best eggs the most pure water – if one of your ingredients is wrong, your cake doesn’t turn out. Everything that goes into [the collection] has to be the best I can obtain and use. It’s got to be practical but an ultimate expression of that article,” he says. Unique LuxurLuxur y 13 U nique y 13

Cutler was also responsible for coming up with Richie Benaud’s cream Channel Nine coat.

14

ww w.uni quees t at e s. co m. a u

Assistance for the collection has already been sought from many quarters with a series of local and international artisans agreeing to support him in turning his dream into reality. In relying on relationships cultivated over many years, John has been able to lean on suppliers to secure some of the world’s rarest fabrications to use in the collection, including lightweight pure silk velvet made by Parisian fabric weavers, Dormeuil Frere, with whom J.H Cutler has been working with for 131 years. In addition, John hopes to source a modern casual tweed from British supplier, Dashing Tweeds. All thread used in the garment construction will be silk. Long term J.H Cutler collaborator, John Thomson, has been engaged to design and hand-make unique 18 carat gold hangers for each garment in the collection, while John has been working with Sydneybased illustrator, Edwina Buckley of Lollilu Textiles & Illustrations, to design a unique peacock lining that will be a key signature of each piece in the collection. “The whole aesthetic concept for a peacock is that they open up to show their glory. Women have got all the colour. So I’m turning it around and saying ‘why can’t the man be the peacock and indulge in a bit of colour.’ “I often encourage people to stretch the boundaries in the linings. With linings you can do anything. If a groom is having his suit made I tell him to keep it from the bride but to bring in some photos of her or them as a couple and I can have those photos incorporated into the lining. In its own special way, the lining of the suit then says ‘I’ve always loved you’. Lining is very important.”

Designed for show and not for wear, the pieces that comprise The Ultimate Collection will be presented in glass cabinets to enable them to travel and be displayed in different locations – such as an upmarket store, a museum, gallery or hotel foyer. John believes the collection is unlikely ever to be put up for sale. But if forced to put a value on it he considers it would sit around the $1 million mark. To complete The Ultimate Collection offering, each piece will come with its own book written and illustrated by long-term Cutler collaborative partners, journalist David Dowsey and photographer Richard Weinstein, detailing the intricacies of each garment’s construction. The presentation will also be top notch with bespoke furniture maker, David Boucher, already on board to craft a unique box in which each book will appear. The second stage of the project will see John produce a second bespoke version, designed to be admired but also worn, that would retail for around $200,000 in total. A more commercial collection – dubbed The Gentleman’s Wardrobe, with a price point of around $85,000 – would boast many of the same elements as the main 'Ultimate' collection but more likely to appear in the form of two formal suits, a casual suit, a dinner suit, a blazer and a pair of trousers. This version would be made the classic bespoke way and not by hand, he says.

In addition, John has been in talks with jeweller, Justin Schwartz of Quorra, on the concept of using jewels as buttons.

“I’m an artisan and artisans don’t make money. I don’t own anything. I don’t own a house, I don’t own a car, I just live nicely. The Ultimate Collection may be a way of using my experience, my abilities and my dreams as superannuation. [However] it’s also a way of using my 51 years of experience in an ultimate sort of way.

“[The idea behind it is to] have a decent sized button made from encrusted jewels such as black diamonds, pearls or opals that are backlit and appear as though they come from your soul.”

“I could just retire, die out and go quietly. But that’s not me, I want to make a statement and that statement has a lot to do with keeping the bespoke and the pure process alive.”

A new chapter in Aston Martin’s 103-year histor y began at the 86 th International Geneva Motor Show in 2016 with the unveiling of the stunning new DB11.

Unique LuxurLuxur y 27 U nique y 27

T

he bold new figurehead of the illustrious ‘DB’ bloodline, the DB11 is an authentic, dynamic sporting GT in the finest Aston Martin tradition.

Showcasing a fresh and distinctive design language, DB11 features pioneering aerodynamics powered by a potent new, in-house designed, 5.2-litre, twin-turbocharged, V12 engine and built upon a new lighter, stronger, and more space efficient bonded aluminium structure. DB11 is the fastest, most powerful, most efficient and most dynamically gifted DB model in Aston Martin’s history.

28

ww w.uni quees t at e s. co m. a u

Designing an icon Instantly recognisable, the DB11’s design looks inherently right, yet utterly different. Heralding a new design era for Aston Martin, the marque married familiar features with radical new ideas to give DB11 a fresh, yet unmistakable identity. The iconic radiator grille has been reinterpreted, it's lines and features amplified and celebrated. DB11’s striking new grille stands out dramatically alongside the vehicle’s LED lights, creating expressive visual signatures on the DB11’s ‘face’.

Interior of distinction Fine materials and highly skilled hand-craftsmanship are the DB11 interior’s crowning glory. The design team have shunned a highgloss finish for open grained woods, in which you can see and feel the natural texture. Continuing the tradition established by DB9, traditional materials and techniques are drawn on and presented in modern, dynamic ways, suiting the car’s sporting character. This tradition flows into some of the most imaginative use of leather you’ll find in any car. Quilting. Perforation. Brogueing. Each technique adds a different layer of intricacy, detail and delight to the interior. Made, rather than manufactured, it’s what gives DB11 its warmth of character and why the Aston Martins of today and tomorrow will always be a true expression of craftsmanship.

Engineering highlights Every millimetre of DB11 has been re-imagined from the ground up. Lighter, stronger, more dynamic and space-efficient. These are the ambitious targets that were set when creating DB11. As leaders in bonded aluminium construction the marque achieved every single one. All four occupants benefit from increases in headroom and legroom, ensuring DB11 is a true 2+2, expanding DB11’s practicality. Underpinned by a new bonded aluminium body structure that combines lightness and strength, DB11 sets a formidable new standard for sporting Grand Tourers and takes the legendary DB lineage to unprecedented heights. ston Martin was founded in 1913 by Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin and originally known as Bamford Martin. It was rechristened the following year as Aston Martin after a successful run by Lionel Martin at the Aston Hill Climb competition. The first car was was built in that same year and was known as the ‘Coal Scuttle’. Very quickly, the Company established itself with cars of “Power, Beauty and Soul”, to borrow Aston Martin’s tagline. In 1922, two Aston Martins competed in, and finished, at the French Grand Prix, and further racing success took place in 1933 at Le Mans when

32

ww w.uni quees t at e s. co m. a u

the Aston Martin 1.5 Litre took the top three places in its class. In 1937, a grand total of 140 cars were built that year. After the second world war, the inimitable David Brown took control of the Company in 1947, and throughout the 1950's Aston Martin went from strength to strength. Further successes at Le Mans followed and Aston Martin launched the DBR1 racing car, the DB Mk III and the magnificent DB4. By the end of the decade, Aston Martin had secured the World Sportscar Championship when the DBR1 won the Nürburgring 1000 km and the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

The swinging Sixties continued in much the same fashion for this iconic manufacturer. 1960 saw the launch of the DB4GT Zagato and in 1963 the DB4 GT won Ferrari’s backyard at Monza. This was also the year that the legendary DB5 was launched. It helps, of course, if a car is ‘endorsed’ by, perhaps, fiction’s greatest protagonist. Who has not heard of Ian Fleming’s James Bond 007 and therefore the Aston Martin DB5? The James Bond effect, if it can be coined thus, has had a huge influence on the popularity and desirability of Aston Martins. Indeed, it has also had an effect on the prices that classic Aston Martins now command - in December 2015 a 1962 DB4GT Zagato was sold at auction for USD $14,300,000. They were always great cars but the DB5 prices went crazy on the back of 007 mania, pulling up the prices of the wonderful DB4. Next to follow was the Kamm-tailed DB6. So with DB4, DB5 and DB6 all now costing both arms and both legs, it is perhaps of little surprise that the prices of their successors are now also on a rapid rise and that these cars are increasingly sought after. The replacement (although it was offered concurrently for a period) for the DB6 was the DBS. Though utilising the same six-cylinder engine as the DB6, the DBS had a much more dynamic and muscular body than its predecessor. The DBS, of which 1193 units were built between 1967 and 1972, was eventually given a more powerful V8 engine designed by Tadek Marek, but essentially the William Towns design of the DBS still remained the same when the AMV8 was launched in 1972 followed by the V8 Vantage in 1977. James Bond, now portrayed by George Lazenby in his solo performance in the role, drives a DBS in ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ in 1969 and when Timothy Dalton took up the 007 mantle in 1987 in ‘The Living Daylights’, the car had become a V8 Vantage. Perhaps the best known film car from this period though was the Aston Martin driven by Lord Brett Sinclair, played by Roger Moore in the tv show ‘The Persuaders’. This ‘Bahama Yellow’ Aston Martin was actually a six-cylinder DBS even though it was badged as a V8. The lines of the car, penned by William Towns (whose other work included the Hillman Hunter, the ‘space aged’ Aston Martin Lagonda, the Jensen-Healey and the Reliant Scimitar) survived four decades. The first DBS was seen in 1967 whilst production of the V8 Vantage did not stop until 1990. There were just 458 examples of the V8

Vantage built in total, which makes it a very rare car - indeed more rare than a DB5, of which 1059 units were made. It is believed that of the 458 Aston Martin V8 Vantages built, that the 1981 car illustrated in beautiful 1950's Aston Racing Green hue, is quite possibly the most pristine in the world, looking and behaving as it does ‘fresh out of the box’. Having covered just 8,000 kms (that is just 5,000 miles!) from new, it has benefited from being owned by some high profile and wealthy individuals. First seen at the dealership of Bob Jane, (former racing driver, V8 Supercar Hall of Fame inductee, and tyre magnate), on William Street in Sydney, the car was eventually purchased by Rene Rivkin. The flamboyant, yet ultimately disgraced stockbroker jailed for insider trading, Rivkin sold the car of necessity at auction. Its next custodian was Jodhi Meares, model and swimsuit designer who, at the time, was the wife of billionaire businessman James Packer. Jeremy Best, owner of Cummins Classic Cars in Sydney, wrote to Jodhi asking to purchase the car from her if she ever wished to sell. This eventually happened and the car was sold to a client before returning again to Jeremy, who then sold it a second time to its current owner in 2011. Thankfully, this stunning Australiandelivered car seems to have found a permanent home as one of the jewels in a small car collection of a discerning gentleman. The vehicle is in absolutely immaculate condition and, along with its very low mileage, is in remarkable original condition. It was beautifully repainted whilst owned by Jodhi Meares (who is pictured sitting in the rear of the actual car). It also benefits from several special factory details, including a mesh front radiator grille rather than a blank grille to allow greater ingress of cooling air for a hot climate. Without a doubt, this stunning car is a worthy successor to the DB5 which first captured the world’s imagination in 1964 in ‘Goldfinger’ and the following year in ‘Thunderball’ and again in the most recent Bond movie ‘Spectre’. Its shape is now fashionable once again and much sought after as the wheel turns full circle.

fashion house was all about the ranch owner, as witnessed by the cowhide trucker jackets and fringed suede jackets worn with leather belts and hand-tooled buckles that came sauntering down the runway.

And it is for this reason that the Ralph Lauren Purple Label collection was, and is always, such a class act.

As with several of his contemporaries, Lauren clearly sees shearling as a big hit this season when paired with creamy cotton pants and boots for that all-American look.

Luxury business suits will continue to be a key part of the Purple Label proposition with their incarnation this season featuring lightly roped jackets in a palette of grays. However, where Prada was all about the sailor, the American

urberry has always been an early adopter when it comes to utilising technology and digital mass media communication to connect with its global consumer base.

So it should come as no surprise that the English fashion house recently became the first fashion brand in the world to live stream its February 2016 collection via the Apple TV platform. The unique initiative, which saw the Christopher Bailey-led brand develop its own app, will see additional live moments and exclusive content launched throughout the year. Dubbed “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”, the collection launch saw Bailey send down the catwalk coats of all shapes and sizes all of which were redefined for relaxed weekends. Trench coats, topcoats, duffle coats, military pea coats and parkas and even the odd bomber, puffer and flight jacket made it down the runway with hand sewn seams, hand-embroidered sequins, bonded structures and hand painted leather pullers proving they’d had the magic Bailey touch. Key accessories included The Satchel – a bag in English suede, bridle leather and house check, the Sneaker that appeared in a technical nylon twill and Scottish woven cashmere scarves with a reversible check.

I

t has been noted that the increasing popularity of pre-fall collections among Europe’s best-known fashion houses has two principle drivers. First and foremost it is because, in practical terms, the pre-season collections offer a tasty morsel for fashion-hungry shoppers between the seasons. Secondly, owing to the fact many do not have accompanying runway shows, they tend to be more commercial in nature and therefore are stocked in stores longer, affording the consumer a longer period in which to purchase them.

‘Monte Carlo’ Shoes (calf leather) - $920

‘Josh Regatta’ Backpack - $3,450

‘LV Fifty Five Automatic GMT 41MM’ Watch (steel and leather) - $6,700

But there is growing evidence to suggest a third element – that preseason collections afford designers the chance to experiment with new ideas and allow them to gauge interest from critics and buyers for previously untested design concepts – may be at play. Whether this is the case for Louis Vuitton menswear artistic director, Kim Jones, is open to debate. However, there is no denying that, yet again, he manages to capture our attention with his reimagination of many of our favourite classics. Boasting just shy of 30 different looks, the Louis Vuitton man, this season, has a taste for the camouflage print where Jones has cleverly taken LV’s iconic check pattern and overlaid it with a blood red and a sky blue camo. Used across a range of items from shirting and coats to bags, it also appears on this season’s must-have scarf, whether knotted loosely at the nape or bound tightly around the neck. We’re sure we’re not the only ones eager to see more of the Jones magic when the Paris fashion house launches its new men’s denim line later this year.

o Miuccia Prada, the sailor is king.

At least that’s the way it appeared when the Italian label presented its men’s autumn-winter collections at Milan Fashion Week recently. As with the women’s pre-fall collections which were presented at the same time, the male models wore sailor caps, white sneakers and washed leather tunic tops as they set about showing off nautical staples. Waxed indigo denims appeared – seemingly for those at the coalface - while shapely officers’ coats followed for those special occasions.

Navy peacoats, boxy leather jackets and cropped trousers were there, so too were tailored capes and oversize shirts featuring naval graphics and romantic images – including one depicting Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra kissing a marine - all of which were created by young French artist, Christophe Chemin, and each of which brought the type of drama we anticipate from the Italian fashion house. Leather is a key feature of Prada’s fall-winter 2016 men’s collection and it was used to dress cropped lace-up jackets. Speaking after the show, Prada said the collection encompassed “Drama, passion, heroism, romanticism…” We couldn’t have put it more succinctly ourselves.

reathtakingly beautiful in every way, Chapel House is the epitome of an historic country estate with all the charm and character of yesteryear. Surrounded by 9 acres of magnificent gardens, the property incorporates several truly unique buildings each with their own amazing story. The oldest building is the Cobb and Co Inn, built of stone around 1832 and is mostly in 'original' condition. Behind that building is the quaint cottage, now a 2 bedroom guest cottage named The Owl Pen, which is believed to have been the original kitchen for the Inn. Attached to the cottage is 'the studio'. It started its life as an open-air hand ball court for the Franciscan Monks who occupied the site from approximately 1919 to 1925. A second storey was added in the 1970's and was used as an art studio for 10 years by John Olsen, probably Australia's best known contemporary artist. The Franciscans also built the Georgian-style main home in 1920, attaching it to the Inn. This magnificent home features a large country kitchen, beautiful light-filled dining and lounge rooms, a billiard room and 4 bedrooms. The current owners have filled the garden beds with thousands of bulbs and roses, built arbours, created meandering streams and lovingly tendered the magnificent grounds and buildings. The property also incorporates 170 acres of land, an enormous dressage arena and holding paddock and is located in the historic village of Rydal. Rydal is a small Heritage-Listed Village with two churches, a hotel and the railway station. The nearest shops are in Wallerawang about ten minutes drive away. The property is located just 20 minutes from Lithgow and 2.5 hours drive (& 3 hours by train) from Sydney. Chapel House is a truly magical estate that must be seen to be truly appreciated.

The Big Pilot's Watch Annual Calendar Edition "Le Petit Prince"

Unique LuxurLuxur y 73 U nique y 73

T

he Frenchman, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is probably most well known for his allegorical and spiritual autobiography, ‘Le Petit Prince’ (The Little Prince), the most translated book of all time from the literary canon of the French language. Perhaps what is less well known is that Saint-Exupéry, against the wishes of his family, qualified in the dangerous role of a pilot with the French Air Force in 1921. In 1926, as a pilot, he joined the fledgling airline, Latécoère, which was later to become Aéropostale. As an early pioneer of aviation, he opened up mail routes to remote parts of Africa and later also acted as a director to the Argentine Air Mail Service, opening up further virgin flying routes in South America. He returned to Paris in 1931 where he published ‘Vol de Nuit’ (Night Flight) which established his literary reputation. At the age of 35, this daredevil aviator crashed into the Libyan desert, endeavouring to break the record from Paris to Saigon. The story of his survival after very nearly dying of thirst was the basis for the book, ‘Terre des Hommes’ (Wind, Sand and Stars). Miraculously, he also survived other severe accidents including almost drowning when he capsized a seaplane he was testing, and crashing in Guatemala attempting a long distance flight from New York to Tierra del Fuego. With the outbreak of the Second World War, deemed too old to fly fighter planes, Saint-Exupéry flew reconnaissance missions until the surrender of France in the summer of 1940, whereupon he fled to the USA. In America, he wrote ‘Pilote de Guerre’ (Flight to Arras), ‘Lettre à un Otage’ (Letter to a Hostage - an optimistic ‘letter’ to a Jewish intellectual in hiding in occupied France) and the classic children’s story ‘Le Petit Prince’. Persuading the Allied Forces to let him fly again, he disappeared over the Mediterranean Sea on 31st July 1944, believed to have been shot down by a Luftwaffe fighter. Little wonder then that Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a man whose life and literature were inextricably dominated by flying, has been chosen as the ‘face’ of watch manufacturer, IWC Schaffhausen’s, Big Pilot’s Watch advertising campaign. Breitling choose celebrity pilot, John Travolta, as its frontman, and Tag Heuer jump on the Premiership winning Leicester City fairytale by choosing manager, Claudio Ranieri, as an example of how not to “crack under pressure”, whilst IWC trumps them all with its decision to use the pioneering pilot and writer who died 72 years ago. This says a great deal about IWC Schaffhausen which has had a pioneering spirit and innovative approach to the design and engineering of watches since the foundations of the company were established in Switzerland in 1868 by the grandly appellated American, Florentine Ariosto Jones. It was the 27 year old Bostonian engineer and watchmaker, Jones, who founded the “International Watch Company” and in doing

so, brought together progressive American production techniques with the renowned, skilled, Swiss craftsmanship and reputation for watchmaking. In Schaffhausen, in the northern most corner of Switzerland, he found ideal conditions on the Rhine with a hydropower plant to run the machines in his modern factory and the artisan tradition of horology. The first IWC wristwatches were produced at the end of the 19th Century, and very soon a long tradition of fine wristwatches was established throughout the decades of the 20th Century - the ‘Portofino’ in 1984; the ‘Da Vinci Beta 21 Calibre’ in 1969; the ‘Aquatimer Automatic’ in 1955; the ‘Portuguese’ in 1939; and the ‘IWC Special Pilot’s Watch’ in 1936. This last was the same year that the special pilot, Saint Exupéry crashed in the desert. This watch, the first ‘Special Pilot’s Watch’, featured a rotating bezel with an arrowhead index that could be used to register take-off times. It was also fitted with an antimagnetic escapement and high contrast luminescent hands and numerals. IWC Schaffhausen, since then, has continued to have a special relationship with flying. In 1940, came the 52 calibre T.S.C. Big Pilot’s Watch, which was the first observer’s watch with a larger case measuring 55 millimetres in diameter. This watch quickly

became a benchmark for classic pilot’s watches as we know them today and has since assumed iconic style status. Its aeroplane instrument look/ design then led to IWC’s best known Pilot’s Watch, the Mark 11, first seen in 1948. Originally, it was built for, and used extensively for over 30 years, by the Royal Air Force and it has remained a long standing part of the IWC Pilot’s Watches family. The lengthy association with the RAF continued and in 2003 IWC launched the watch series named after the redoubtable British fighter 'Saint-Ex' as a pilot in Argentina in 1930 aircraft, the legendary Spitfire. Three years later, IWC released special edition Pilot’s Watches commemorating our flying hero, Saint-Ex, and his best known work, ‘The Little Prince’. In 2007 Pilot’s Watches bearing the name ‘TOP GUN’ joined the series. Now eighty years on from Saint-Exupéry’s heroic journey out of the desert in the Maghreb region of North Africa, and the “take-off” of the first IWC Pilot’s Watch, there is a splendid range of 24 different members of this “flying squadron” available from the Schaffhausen premises. The new Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 55 and 48 closely resemble, in original detail, the historical Big Pilot’s Watch Calibre 52 T.S.C. of what Winston Churchill referred to as, the “darkest hour” of 1940. There are also new special editions of the “Antoine de SaintExupéry” and “Le Petit Prince” featuring attractive tobacco brown and blue dials. Taking up the tradition of the Mark 11 is the new entry-level model, the Mark XVIII. These classic Pilot’s Watches have not become

The Big Pilot's Watch - Perpetual Calendar Edition

subject to the vagaries of fashion and continue to remain close to the practical and historic originals. The same is true for the more stylised TOP GUN models which now feature embossed calfskin straps. For those who prefer a smaller and more discreet watch (and remember, that unusually, IWC only makes watches as it states in its advertising that are “engineered for men”- there is no ‘La Petite Princesse’) the smallest model in the current IWC line-up is the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36. This IWC traditional feel is maintained throughout the Pilot’s Watches range with new leather straps and stainless-steel bracelets whilst the Pilot’s Watches Chrono and Mark XVIII are also available with NATO inspired twin-coloured textile straps. As well as being the 80th Anniversary of the launch of IWC’s Pilot’s Watch, 2016 is also a celebration of the company’s ten year global partner relationship with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation which endeavours to use the positive power of sport to challenge and change some of our global society’s inequities. This year, IWC Schaffhausen chose a model from its ‘Portofino’ family to celebrate the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony in Berlin with a limited edition of 1,500 watches, the ‘Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Edition’ with the winning design of last year’s IWC children’s drawing competition engraved on the case back. And so, talking of children, perhaps it is fitting that the final word should come from an aviator who wrote one of the most endearing and enduring children’s fables ever written, the story of a small boy on his odyssey, who “for his escape he took advantage of a flight of migrating wild birds.” Fitting too that IWC choose Saint-Exupéry, for his writing was not only about flying but also about time, “And suddenly a completely ridiculous image came into my mind. I thought of clocks out of order. All the clocks of France - out of order. Clocks in their church steeples. Clocks on railway stations. Chimney clocks in empty houses. A charnel house of clocks. ‘The war,’ I said to myself, ‘is that thing in which clocks are no longer wound up’.” (Flight to Arras. 1942). Unique LuxurLuxur y 75 U nique y 75

S

ydney surfer turned entrepreneur, Hayden Cox, has never had time to be tardy.

The progeny of a scientist father and a property developing mother, he was still a teenager when he first learnt to code a website, merely 22 when he opened his first commercial enterprise, Haydenshapes, and just 24 when he designed and patented a worldfirst parabolic carbon fibre frame surfboard construction concept dubbed FutureFlex. Success with an additional performance surfboard design followed soon after along with a second manufacturing site, this time in the Californian city of Los Angeles in the USA. 2014 and 2015 saw the now 34-year-old continue to strive for improvement after the technology he developed helped him take out the titles of Surfboard of the Year two years running at the Australian Surf Industry Awards - ironic for a man who doesn’t like sand. It was also the period where American fashion designer, Alexander Wang, came calling to tap into Cox’s vision of surfboards as both a visual art form as well as a vehicle for innovative performance by requesting that Haydenshapes produce a limited edition series of marble print surfboards for installations across New York and Tokyo. Yet it is technology of a different kind that is now helping Cox continue to ride his wave of success. Last year, Haydenshapes opened its first bricks and mortar retail store in Mona Vale on Sydney’s north shore. But in keeping with his unique view of the world, this was no run-of-the-mill surfboard store. “I didn’t want to create just another surf shop, I wanted to do something completely different to what had been seen and focus more on the consumer- experience side, integrating my love of modern technology.”

92

ww w.uni quees t at e s. co m. a u

Cox says the vibe is more of a lux surf offering with the light industrial surroundings of suburban Mona Vale affording it an ambience not often on offer to contemporary board manufacturers. The aesthetic of the space is sleek and minimal and devoid of clutter while asymmetric concrete fixtures, designed by Cox following a trip to Japan, dot the interior. “[The store] was created so that customers could engage a little deeper with who we are as a brand and what we are into - design, technology, premium product and of course surfboards. “The environment that your product sits in can completely change the perception and the way people see it, so we wanted our store to be the pinnacle of this experience for our brand.” Cox says both professionally and personally he has always been hugely influenced by different communication platforms and the rapid way the technology behind them is advancing. To this end, Cox has been quick to incorporate a Samsung mobile ecosystem into the business which sees him operate an open network of connected devices that allow him to communicate with his inhouse team, offices and manufacturing facilities across Australia and America as well as his outsourced facility in Thailand. Recognising his obvious interest in this area, last year Cox was invited to be a collaborative partner with Google, which introduced him to the virtual reality concept for the first time at a trade show in the US. He was, he says, “immediately hooked” and eager to begin researching ways to incorporate it into Haydenshapes. The business has grown a lot in the last few years and Cox says he went from talking daily with customers, to bringing on staff and focussing more on our international growth. It proved impossible to run a global business successfully and still connect with customers

the same way as a shaper, so he began investigating ways he could invite them into his workshop and still maintain a close connection. Despite the technology being relatively new, virtual reality devices are now affordable and accessible to the everyday consumer, making it easier for go-getter brand owners to incorporate their use into the everyday way they do business, he says. “In the new store, customers can put on the Samsung Gear VR goggles and be transported into the shaping bay with me and get a one-on-one tour of my creative workshop and a little insight into how we build the product. “It’s a modern version of the traditional ‘localism’ mentality with the use of cool technology. Customers can also design their own custom boards using touch screen Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 devices also located in store. The whole space is really one of a kind.” Cox, a former iPhone user who has converted to Android, says he now runs everything via Google apps, owing to its easy-to-use framework. “You don’t have to be IT literate at all and they designed the system specifically with that in mind. When I made the switch over from

iPhone my life became a lot easier because the things I would normally have to wait until I could access my laptop, could suddenly be done on my mobile.” Cox’s distain for time wasting saw him use his Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and new Galaxy S7 edge to write key notes and chapters for his first book set for release in October. National airline, Qantas, is yet another example of how businesses have capitalised on mobile ecosystems to set future benchmarks. Qantas customers in Sydney and Melbourne International First Class Lounges, as well as in the First Class cabins on select A380 services, were offered an inflight virtual reality entertainment experience in what was believed to be the world-first virtual experience offered for inflight passengers. Able to transport users to an immersive virtual world at the click of a button to showcase the sights and delights of network destinations, new Qantas products, as well as the latest blockbuster movies, the addition of Qantas’ VR headsets represented a watershed moment for inflight entertainment. Unique LuxurLuxur y 93 U nique y 93

94

ww w.uni quees t at e s. co m. a u

Samsung Electronics Australia says experiences such as these are increasingly common with more users discovering the innovative ways their mobile ecosystem can be used to help enhance the consumer experience. The improved functionality delivered via mobile ecosystems allows business executives to save time and other resources. With ‘always on’ technology accessible on their terms, business executives can easily tailor their daily schedules and stay abreast of last minute changes with just a glance at their wrist or touch of a button. Connectivity is the key to reshaping and redefining our experiences, whether in a professional or personal capacity, the company says. “Mobility in today’s world is just as much about the ecosystem that surrounds a mobile phone as it is about the technical features of the device itself.” While larger entities such as Qantas may find contactless payments, tablets and VR form key components of their ecosystems, smaller entities like Haydenshapes can use the same devices to generate a completely different experience.

The same is true of personal users that are wishing to connect with their loved ones. “Social media allows us to share the experiences we have with friends and family that they would otherwise miss out on due to time, money, distance and sometimes even health. While social media improves a user’s ability to share their experiences, it often reinforces what others are missing out on rather than allowing them to share in the moment with the user.” Currently, the combination of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Gear 360 camera is the only eco-system that allows its users to create and share immersive experiences that allow other people to live the moment with the phone owner, as if they were there. “With more than one device connected and capable of capturing and sharing experiences differently, a shift is created from sharing moments that people passively observe, to sharing moments they can actively live. “There’s no longer a need to miss out.”

he Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari in Modena may not be quite as well known as its bigger sibling, the Ferrari Museum at Maranello. It is however one of the most exciting museum spaces in Europe and its latest exhibition certainly does its bright yellow car bonnet roof and the house where Enzo was born, justice. “Red Carpet: Ferrari’s Homage to Hollywood and Beyond” is its latest offering, and what a show it is, providing as the name suggests, a tribute to Ferrari’s role in the aesthetics of the silver screen. Cars, of course, have always been an integral part of movie making from the earliest days. The energy and movement that the automobile brought to early films is in evidence through such silent films as ‘The Keystone Cops’ produced by Mack Sennett in the years immediately prior to the first world war. Indeed, the film industry and the automotive industry are almost exact contemporaries from the end of the 19th century. The first films date from the 1890's (though a case can be made that Eadweard Muybridge’s ‘The Horse in Motion’ study from 1878 as being the first moving film), whilst the first motor car is generally accepted as the three-wheeled two-seater by Carl Benz from 1886. Its 0.75HP engine was based on the stationary onecylinder two-stroke petrol engine that Benz had developed at the very end of 1879.

108

w w w.uni quees t a te s. co m. a u

The golden periods of the two industries also seem to run parallel. The 1920's, which saw sound first introduced with the 1927 ‘Jazz Singer’ starring Al Jolson, was also a new age of democratisation of the motor car with so many more manufacturers providing so many more opportunities to so many more people. As Marshall McLuhan in his original and perhaps frightening book, ‘Understanding Media’ in 1964 said, “The motorcar…broke up family life, or so it seemed, in the Twenties. It separated work and the domicile, as never before. It exploded each city into a dozen suburbs…the motorcar ended the countryside.” With the passing of post-war 1950's austerity, so too did black and white films pass on to colour, and as we move into the 1960's the car too became more vibrant and modern. This is perhaps best epitomised by the forward looking Jaguar E-Type of 1961, very much in contrast with many cars of the 1950's in England which definitely still had pre-war antecedents. With some lateral thinking, I believe an argument could be made linking the work of the French nouvelle vague cinema of Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut with the shock of the first appearance of the Citroën DS in 1955; or the Italian neorealist cinema of Federico Fellini with the masters of the Italian carrozzeria, Fantuzzi or Scaglietti, of the same period. In the 1960's and 1970's films became

more avantgarde and so too did the styling of the automobile. By the 1980’s anything ‘went’, but today cars, like films, are formulaic and subject to too many rules of ‘genre’. If the 19th century was the age of steam and still photography, the 20th century was about movement, for both the image on the screen and for the individual, it was the century of the cinema and the car. The Modena exhibition beautifully illustrates this symbiotic relationship between the two, bringing together the vehicles used on screen with clips of them in action. Who can forget Magnum PI’s Ferrari 308GTS or the Testarossa used in Miami Vice, cars and programmes which defined their time. There are some very special cars brought to our attention in this show, the Ferrari 512S used in ‘Le Mans’, and the beautiful 375 America in particular stand out. The 375 America is the car in which Sofia Loren, playing Phaedra, a poor sponge diver, is driven by the unscrupulous, Victor Parmalee, played by Clifton Webb in Jean Negulesco’s 1957 ‘Boy on a Dolphin’. Ironically, the majority of the film is set on the Greek island of Hydra, an island where, even today, there are no cars - visits to the mainland in the film however provide us with the cinematic opportunity to see the legendary 375 in action. Also on display in the exhibition is the white Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Pininfarina beloved by Marilyn Monroe. Of course an exhibition such as this would not be complete without reference to such star names

as Monroe or Steve McQueen and his amazing association with the marque, Peter Sellers, and Paul Newman who actually competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona in a Ferrari 365 GTB4. There is also plenty of artistic licence utilised to make this a thoroughly entertaining and interactive exhibition of the Prancing Horse legend. Also included is the F430 Schumacher complete with big cartoon eyes from ‘Cars’ (in which the aforementioned Newman voiced the part of Doc Hudson), along with ‘Thomassima 3’, an American-style Ferrari based on 250 GT running gear sculpted by Tom Mead, the Californian designer who lived and worked in Modena from 1960 to 1973. There is even a contemporary Formula one car referencing racing movies such as ‘Grand Prix’, ‘Le Mans’ and ‘Rush’. After all, it was on the race track that Ferrari first made its name. Cars have often been the stars of movies. We all have our favourites - just think of the Minis in ‘The Italian Job’ with Michael Caine; ‘The Yellow Rolls-Royce’ with Alain Delon, Shirley McLaine et al; ‘Bullitt’ where the Ford Mustang almost overshadowed Steve McQueen; the ‘Herbie’ series, or another children’s favourite ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ written by 007’s creator, Ian Fleming (talking of cars in films let’s not get started on James Bond!). All of this is wonderfully demonstrated with Ferraris in this marvellous exhibition. My vote though is for Dino Risi’s 1962 ‘Il Sorpasso’ (The Overtaking) and the lovely Lancia B24 Spyder driven by the protagonist Vittorio Gassman. One of my all time top ten films and one of my all time top ten cars. Un i que LuxurLuxur y 109 U nique y 109

Sydney-based autobody repair centre NSC is raising the bar on prestige vehicle restoration.

F

or more than 20 years, Avik Kalloglian has been doing his bit to steer drivers of some of Australia’s most luxurious vehicles out of tight spots.

As the executive officer of North Shore Classic Autobody Centre (NSC), it falls to Avik and his team to take the stress, chaos and inconvenience away from drivers who find themselves involved in motor vehicle accidents. Considered the state’s leading auto body repair shop, NSC specialises in repairing bespoke vehicles and carries out manufacturer approved repairs on behalf of some of the world’s most prestigious car brands including Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Range Rover, McLaren and Lexus. The Sydney-based business is also dealer approved for a host of brands including Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Mercedes, BMW and Porsche.

So impressive is the development that some clients have referred to it as being “more akin to a hotel than a body centre”. Avik says a key part to the NSC success story has been the fact the business has never shied from investing in the latest industryleading technologies. As a result, the workshop now boasts one of the most modern automotive repair facilities in Sydney with overhead infra-red drying equipment and an infra-red spray booth fitted with internal hoists for 4WD, computerised measuring systems, an internal aluminium welder and separate detailing and wash floor areas just some of the facilities on offer. Uncompromising attention to detail and impeccable client liaison are also core values while continuity of staff, many of whom have been with the company more than a decade, has also helped develop the business’s reputation for outstanding customer service.

Founded by Avik and with the support of general manager, Mark Patterson - who between them have more than 40 years’ autobody repair experience - NSC proved quick to attract the attention of proud prestige car owners looking to have their vehicles restored to factory condition, servicing around 30 to 35 cars a week from its 3,000 square metre base.

“Our team consists of well experienced, handpicked, factory trained and qualified repairers, painters, fitters and mechanics. Our staff are fully trained and competent in all modern repair techniques. All of our staff go through regular manufacturer run, updated training for all newly released vehicles, and have access to new data and equipment for the very best in repair techniques.”

Today, it operates out of a much larger, purpose-built facility in Artarmon in Sydney’s lower north shore, offering Avik and his team plant space more than triple the workshop’s original size and where both output and staff numbers have quadrupled in a bid to meet the rising demand.

Avik says while the paint and panel repair industry has changed significantly in the years he has been involved, one of the most pressing concerns is the number of European and luxury vehicle owners overlooking the importance of visiting an accredited repairer once they are involved in a collision.

116

w w w.uni quees t a te s. co m. a u

Not only can this prove a dangerous hazard to their livelihood in the event of a second collision, Avik says, but it can also lead to voided warranties, knockoff parts being used and unsafe repairs that are not to the manufacturers specifications. Resale value can also be impacted. To ensure NSC remains a manufacturer approved repairer, both office and trades staff are required to attend regular training sessions with the different manufacturers as well as pass certification testing to repair each individual vehicle. In addition, some manufacturers also require NSC to purchase and use specialised equipment (only available to approved repairers) custom designed for that particular make and model of vehicle. Avik says that the issue of quality within the auto body industry is a daily struggle. “Many insurers are price driven and are understandably looking to reduce their cost. NSC pledge to our customers, to never let that affect their repair, we will not take a shortcut or repair to a lower standard. [We] back this pledge with a lifetime warranty on their repairs. “Keeping this pledge often results in challenges from insurers and the like, but backed by the vehicle manufacturer, NSC can ensure the vehicle is repaired to specification.” That hands-on approach is extended to its clients with NSC staff

constantly striving to deliver services that alleviate the trauma associated with being involved in a motor accident. To this end, the company works hard at ensuring customers are looked after with a 24 hour, seven-day accident hotline, access to a reliable towing service with secure lock up, accident replacement vehicles available to all clients, ample undercover off-street parking and a popular customer vehicle pick up and delivery service. While visiting NSC’s Dickson Ave reception area, they are invited to use the telecommunications and beverage making facilities with private rooms available upon request. To make the repair process as smooth and efficient as possible, NSC also utilises a computerised quote system with images for ease of processing with all private and insurance work, regular audits of time efficiency, a vigorous final check is performed before the vehicle is released to the customer and with a 100 percent guarantee of all workmanship completed by its staff. Repairing bespoke vehicles is not solely about massive time and financial investments, says Avik. “It’s also about respect and care for the owners of these fine vehicles. NSC respects the investment the owner has made, and shares their enthusiasm for bespoke vehicles and service. This results in a boutique customer experience where nothing is too difficult, and staff work closely with the customer to ensure their expectations are exceeded.” Un i que LuxurLuxur y 117 U nique y 117

While the 70's vibe continues to reign for Pre-Fall 2016, few European fashion houses can agree on what trans-seasonal really represents with everything from mink coats to sheer dresses making a runway appearance.

esign head, Nicolas Ghesquière, has always been clear about how he perceives the Louis Vuitton girl and this pre-fall RTW collection further cements this positioning.

Eyeline Shoes in Calf Leather - $1,150

Ghesquière himself notes that this season his offering has been built on a platform of three pillars: sophisticated styles recalling the heritage of the brand, the comfort and fluidity of an active wardrobe and the ever-present dream adventure where the whole world is easily within reach. To put it in more simplistic terms – it is sexy, sophisticated & sporty. In referencing some of the best pieces from collections gone by – such as the colour-blocked motorbike pants and zip front minidress – together with a motocross theme that flirts with androgyny, Ghesquière appears to understand these are the defining staples that put Louis Vuitton women streets ahead of her contemporaries while further enhancing his unique signature.

Jacket Painting Twist MM Bag in Monogram Canvas - $4,750

“Colour Blossum Star” pendant in pink and white mother of pearl - $3,350

Leg of mutton sleeves, scrunched sleeve bomber tops and parachute skirts in a monotone palette missed with beige, complete the offering. In terms of accessories, it was all about belts and gloves. Belts moved from the waist to under the bust to offer a new silhouette while sexy black gloves and platform lace-up boots added a sexuality that, as always, puts the LV girl in a league of her own.

The British fashion house’s “February 2016” collection at London Fashion Week, marked the first time it trialled a new see-nowbuy-now collection format as a way of presenting, what it termed, “seasonless, immediate, and personal” ranges, more in line with the demands of its global audience. And, by all accounts, it proved a resounding success. Inspired by a “patchwork of influences” which chief executive, Christopher Bailey, said was influenced by British artists, musicians and history, and boasted a distinctly military overtone, the collection was specifically designed for all-year-round wear.

The Buckle Boot in Rubberised Leather - $1,795

“This is a collection of clothes that will be delivered in stores in very hot climates and very cold climates,” he said. “You’ve got big, heavy cashmere coats and you’ve also got very light dresses.” Themes included cashmere military overcoats with brass buttons, pleated dresses, flared officer trousers and patchwork skirted dresses across a sombre colour palette of red, sapphire blue, military green, black, mustard, powder blue, metallic teal, white, gunmetal, and regimental navy. Handmade techniques were employed across a number of garments while patchworked panelling, regimental piping and hand-sewn sequin florals were also big. 130

n the 70 years since Christian Dior founded his namesake fashion house, the European luxury goods brand has stared down its share of troubled times. So, as far as the House of Dior is concerned, the departure of creative director, Raf Simon’s last October, is just another hurdle to be conquered. Determined that the show should, and must, go on, Dior put together a Pre-Fall collection not so very far from the genius we have been conditioned to expect. Put together by Dior’s Parisianbased creative team and presented by collection director, Michela Kalb during its internal buying session, what the trans-seasonal collection lacked in terms of theme or front person, it made up for in flair and proportion.

Slingback embellished with black embroideries and black velvet bow detail - $1,900

It was, as many fashion commentators noted, anything but ordinary. A mink coat, treated with gold, was layered atop a checkered cashmere trapeze coat while whisps of lace were added to leather for a feminine touch.

“Dior Fable” gloves with animal embroideries, available in sizes 7/7,5 and 8 - $1,900

Trenches made out of thick cotton crepe with military touches were undoubtedly the focal point of the collection and came as oversized with wide lapels or swinging straps. Pants also featured prominently, appearing in high-waisted or slouchy versions while a tight-fitting pantsuit is sure to appeal. Skirts and dresses feature pleats, asymmetrical hemlines and sequined organza panels as a continuation of that newlydeveloping city-glamour style.

“Diorever” bag in Dahlia Red and Blush Pink softly crinkled lambskin with embroidered charming dragonfly - $5,800

Laid back with a hint of city glamour, the Dior girl this season, as those that have trodden this path before, will continue to shine. Un i que LuxurLuxur y 133 U nique y 133

he Miu Miu woman, so lovingly created by design head, Miuccia Prada, has always been young at heart, loads of fun and effortlessly cool. But this pre-fall season, Prada presents a somewhat more vintage version of her favourite muse. The collection took elements of the past and transformed them to fit the modern world with knickerbocker suits consisting of breeches and tailored jackets, and heavy lace collars reminiscent of the Victorian era.

Earrings - $380

Crossing the generations, flared corduroy, leather and fur coats competed for attention alongside roll-neck jerseys & thick wool skirts. Knitted capes and balloon sleeved lace dresses were also there with embellished belts used to tie the looks together. Plaid made an appearance via suits and jackets while layering was also used to great effect with maxi coats and cashmere scarves being shown off and ribbed knee-high socks appearing atop bottle green velvet platform ankle boots. This collection, as always, was targeted at the young adult market though there was plenty to suggest women of any age could find themselves taking up the course of the Miu Miu woman and rallying against ever having to grow up.

autical, done Miuccia Prada style, is indeed a sight to behold.

But without a navy and white stripe combo to be found, Prada’s nod to the high seas came in the form of reconfigured sailors’ coats, caps and inspired, oversized, white shirt-style dresses.

Hat - $530

Shoes - $1,140

By way of explanation, Prada’s written notes to journalists, prior to her Pre-Fall 2016 collection, references the vast expanses of water crossed by migrants to find a new hope and a better life as a key inspiration, but others have suggested the naval mood could also be in reference to the fact that everyone sails through troubled seas and that, as a result, many of us are often left physically or emotionally shipwrecked as a result.

Bag Prada Pionniäre - $2,800

Presented during Mens Fashion Week in Milan, Prada further mixed things up by teaming with French artist, Christophe Chemin, to introduce eclectic imagery with everything from giraffes to fruit printed on white shirting with undulating hems. Dresses came in the form of black velvet or silk/satin blend with plunging necklines and sharp cut edging, some even backless, while each look was completed with platform sandals and patterned woollen tights. Coats appeared as double-breasted white versions or in brown leather and were worn with corded jerseys and plaid checked gloves in knit grey. But whatever the interpretation, no one can deny this is a collection produced by a skipper well and truly used to setting her own course.

Reviewers refer to it as the “new benchmark in the luxur y SUV segment ” while others have labelled it “close to the perfect car ” but what is it about the Audi SQ7 that has Australian car enthusiasts so enamoured?

W

hen it comes to technical precision and dynamic innovation, luxury vehicle maker, Audi AG, has always been in a league of its own.

The team behind the quattro, the first German large-scale production vehicle to feature permanent all-wheel drive through a centre differential, and the first car manufacturer to introduce aluminum space frames into car design, Audi has always led from the front. And it appears the latest model to roll off its production line, the SQ7 TDI, is no exception.

It could be its power A high performance diesel SUV, the model ticks all the boxes when it comes to a single vehicle capable of being used for a multitude of different purposes. It blends proven technology with a unique state-of-the-art forcedinduction system, affording it unparalleled off-the-line acceleration. Boasting a 4.0-litre twin–turbo V8 diesel engine, the core of the SQ7 design lies with the introduction of a clever world-first electric compressor that all but eliminates turbo lag. Where a regular turbocharger relies on exhaust pressure to make it work –using energy normally lost in the exhaust system to provide more power – the electric compressor simply requires electricity. Once the driver accelerates, an electronic signal is sent to the compressor that, capable of spinning up to 70,000 revolutions per minute, begins pumping air into the traditional turbos.

It may be its green credentials But it’s not just in acceleration where the SQ7 has proven best in class, it is also in efficiency, with the vehicle consuming an average of just 7.2 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. It’s quiet too. The SQ7 also boasts innovative thermal management and sophisticated measures in its crankshaft and camshaft drive that help reduce friction. Audi AG Technical Development Board of Management member, Dr Stefan Knirsch, says the combination of a NOx oxidating catalytic converter and a downstream SCR catalutic converter means it has a particularly efficient emissions control system. “A sound actuator in the exhaust system amplifies the sonorous eightcylinder sound. Drivers can choose how much attention they want to draw to themselves by using the Audi drive select system to vary the amount of sound.”

It could be its superb handling capabilities Dr Knirsch says the front and rear stabiliser can be adjusted independently of each other, giving drivers more control of the vehicle’s on road behaviour. Compared with conventional hydraulically switched stabilisers, the 48-volt-based system offers major advantages over its competitors.

This, in turn, feeds the air into the engine to get things moving before the regular turbos – now flush with exhaust pressure – take over.

A compact electric motor, with a three-stage planetary gearbox, separates the two halves of the stabiliser. On an uneven road surface, they are actively separated resulting in improved ride comfort. During sporty driving, the tubes are interconnected and twisted against each other, significantly reducing the lead on the car, he says.

In short, this added functionality means the SQ7 engine is capable of 325 kw and nearly 950 nm of torque, helping it to reach speeds of up to 100 km/h in an impressive 4.8 seconds and continue up to 250 km/h.

“It can develop more power, it works faster and it is activated even at low speeds. Because it requires no oil, the electromechnical active roll stabilisation is also maintenance-free and environmentally friendly.”

148

w w w.uni quees t a te s. co m. a u

Boasting all-wheel steering, the SQ7’s rear wheels are capable of turning in by as much as five degrees, improving dynamics and stability and making parking a breeze.

Or its design-led exterior styling Available in 12 different colours and measuring 5.07 metres from top to tail, it is hard to describe the SQ7 TDI as anything other than a beautiful beast. Boasting all the hallmarks of the Audi DNA – including a sculpted single frame radiator grille, distinctively highlighted wheels and flared quattro-style blisters - all lines on the car accentuate its width and the robustness of its offering. Other distinguishing features that are unique to this model include its side air inlets, mirror housings, aluminum door inlays and its aesthetically pleasing exhaust system that diverges into four rectangular tailpipes. Its headlights have a pronounced three-dimensional appearance with a double-arrow signature. Each Matrix LED headlight divides its high beam into 30 individual light-emitting diodes paired with three reflectors. This means the control unit is capable of individually turning the diodes on or off and can dim them in 64 stages each depending on the situation. “With the millions of different resultant beam patters, the high-end headlights superbly light up the road, without blinding other road users,” says Dr Knirsch. “Traffic signs are illuminated with less power so that the driver is not blinded by glare.”

Or simply because it’s the epitome of cool The SQ7 has captured the attention of Hollywood with Captain America – the main character in the latest instalment in the Marvel film series, Captain America: Civil War, catching a ride in the new Audi SQ7. “Captain America has superpowers, his trademark is the indestructible Vibranium shield. The Audi SQ7 adds a new superpower to his arsenal, making this sporty SUV the perfect fit for him,” says Anthony Russo, who directed the movie along with his brother, Joe Russo. As if being the car of choice of superheroes is not enough, the SQ7 comes complete with plenty of high-end inclusions such as Audi’s benchmark 12.3-inch virtual cockpit display with customisation and intuitive operation, and a power tailgate. Capable of being both sporty and elegant, the SQ7 is available with a full leather interior, contrasting stitching and luxury velour floor mats. In addition, it offers a wide range of 24 driver assistance systems to help drivers travel safely and comfortably. Its predictive efficiency assistant provides additional information in the instrument cluster to help drivers save fuel, while standard Audi pre sense city – an anticipatory warning and emergency breaking function to avoid accidents and protect pedestrians - gives drivers piece of mind when behind the wheel. There’s also a stylish Bang & Olufsen sound system featuring 23 speakers, 11 channels and a 1920-Watt amplifier that can include two Audi tablets docked into the rear of the front seats for the drivers who enjoy being wired for sound. All of which helps to explain why the release of the Audi SQ7 is so eagerly anticipated.

Akasha Beach House is a four bedroom, three bathroom, Feng Shui designed, luxurious beach-front retreat, located in a gated, beach-front estate right on this beautiful beach. Erosion has not been an issue in Suffolk Park, making it a rare commodity on the Australian coastline. Even more rare is the fact that this particular property backs on to the Arakwal National Park and has the ocean at the front door - all beautifully private and secluded.

A

n expedition with Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic is an exhilarating adventure travel experience. In 2016, Lindblad Expeditions celebrates the 50 year anniversary of the Antarctic landing of Lars-Eric Lindblad, who was the first person to take citizen explorers to Antarctica. Lars-Eric’s son, Sven-Olof Lindblad, continues the family legacy to this day, still introducing curious travellers to exceptionally interesting locations.

Antarctica is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and is one of the world’s last great wildernesses. Lindblad's two ships that visit here, National Geographic Explorer and National Geographic Orion, are fullystabilised, purpose-built expedition ships, able to easily and safely penetrate the softer, first-year ice that is common in the Antarctic. Both vessels can ‘park’ on the ice, allowing you to disembark directly onto the ice continent.

With a fleet of 11 ships, Lindblad Expeditions vessels allow you to discover the planet’s most remarkable places, up-close, and accompanied by an expert team. With a suite of tools, including undersea equipment, a fleet of kayaks and Zodiacs, and Splash-cams (on select ships), every expedition is unique.

Their experience, and continued exploration of the polar regions, has allowed Lindblad to craft genuine expeditions. Lindblad Expeditions pioneered sea kayaking from expedition ships in polar waters – imagine kayaking between enormous icebergs and discovering this serene ice playground at your own pace. They have an undersea specialist on-board who dives with a high definition camera, or will navigate an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), to show you the remarkable undersea life that exists – a truly memorable experience. The fleet of Zodiacs (inflatable landing craft) are easy to embark and disembark from, and offer you unparalleled opportunities to get close

There are many, many reasons to want to visit Antarctica, the dashing history of the Heroic Age of Exploration featuring Douglas Mawson and Ernest Shackleton, the penguins, the majestic icebergs and glaciers and the profound absence of anything man-made. It’s an exclusive destination.

to icescapes and wildlife. Every Lindblad Expeditions itinerary has flexibility built into the schedule to allow time to be able to witness the phenomenal unplanned events that happen around you. On every voyage, the composition of the staff is chosen to ensure a diverse range of expertise from geology to history, for a complete educational journey. Their alliance with National Geographic, established in 2004, offers you access to unprecedented resources. This includes tuition from top-tier National Geographic photographers, who will give you expert guidance on your photography aboard every departure on National Geographic Orion and National Geographic Explorer. Enhance the vibrancy of rockhopper penguins’ crests against stark white ice – it’s harder than you imagine. When travelling with Lindlad, despite being expeditionary in nature, comfort is never of concern. National Geographic Explorer has a well-appointed interior, with vast expanses of glass for an incredible connection with the region. National Geographic Orion has been

engineered and designed for maximum comfort and her public rooms offer panoramic views of the passing landscape. Her menus are designed by Serge Dansereau, owner/chef of the renowned Bathers Pavilion Restaurant on Sydney’s Balmoral Beach. The pace is not always outlandish either. Recap, an entertaining snapshot of the day’s events and upcoming plans on your expedition, is held in the lounge nightly, with pre dinner hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to unwind before your evening meal. Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic’s vessels, National Geographic Orion and National Geographic Explorer, travel to Antarctica and the Arctic, South Georgia and the Falklands Islands between November and March. There is still some limited cabin availability in the 2016/17 season. For more information, visit www.expeditions.com contact 1300 361 012 (AU) or 0800 444 462 (NZ) or see your local travel agent. With summer in the Mediterranean fast approaching, Unique Luxury reveals the luxury sailing mecca’s new elite hot spots. By Bronwen Gora

Porto de Soller, Mallorca

Un i que LuxurLuxur y 183 U nique y 183

Moored in Nice

T

oday begins with your luxury motor yacht pulling into a quaint marina amid a colourful kaleidoscope of fishing boats bobbing beneath a sparkling Mediterranean sun. Ashore, village roads give way to charming cobblestone paths leading past quaint cafés and shops selling one-off curios. Only yesterday, the calm blue waters and soft breezes transported your vessel to a land of historic castles and tomorrow they will deliver you to the centre of European glamour that is Monaco... This rosy picture is not a daydream. It is a journey that from now until October can easily come true. Such days are typical of a vacation cruising the Mediterranean in summer, a destination so saturated in culture, style, food, art and scenery that it reigns supreme among the world’s best places to set sail in luxury. The Mediterranean is surrounded by popular European summer destinations such as Spain (where Roberto Cavalli recently opened a luxury club in Puerto Banus), France, Monaco, Italy, Greece and Croatia. Cruising itineraries tend to cover either the East or West Med, with the east offering the delights of Venice, Istanbul, the Greek Islands, Athens and the Black Sea. West, an itinerary can also meander from Italy, France and to Spain then also include the diversity of Morocco and Tunisia’s Arabic cultures.

The Masteka - Ocean Alliance

184

w w w.uni quees t a te s. co m. a u

Spain’s Barcelona, Italy’s Portofino and stunning Cinque Terre region are on virtually all Eastern Med itineraries as well as the Amalfi Coast and Capri. The highest glamour factor however is found on the French Riviera. This legendary coastline serves up Nice, the principality of Monaco and Monte Carlo, Cannes, Antibes and St Tropez. Many ports are in close proximity, so for instance it is possible to spend a day in Nice, soak up culture at the Matisse Museum and still arrive in Monte Carlo in time to roll the dice at one of Monte Carlo’s four renowned casinos. Nice and Monte Carlo also rank top of the list for shopping (as well as sheer fabulousness), while the historic port of St Tropez oozes an old money vibe that attracts the jetset and offers excellent everything from beaches to restaurants and hotels. With so much on offer, choosing where to go in which vessel can seem overwhelming. Fortunately, Australia has several companies with expertise in Mediterranean luxury cruising and, importantly, access to the ultimate choices money can buy. It is hard to beat the inside knowledge possessed by Ocean Alliance’s charter division manager, Laurie Foulon, a French native who has lived and breathed life in the Mediterranean, and David

Reid from The Moorings. Such outfits offer the kind of super yachts used by celebrities and high net worth individuals who frequent the Mediterranean. Ocean Alliance, for instance, has access to more than 1,400 of the globe’s best, most opulent and modern vessels and motor yachts available for charter. The Moorings also offers a full range of craft, ranging from Beneteau to Leopard catamarans, all specifically built for charter and with so many mod cons they become a “home away from home” says Mr Reid. Vessels can be provided with the services of a captain and as many staff as you choose, as well as gourmet chefs. Elegantly appointed interiors, full facilities from simple DVD players to theatrettes, and of course the obligatory sundecks create the air of a floating five star hotel. Monaco, on the French Riviera, is the must-see Mediterranean destination for most visitors. Port Hercules is party central, with one of the most happening nightclubs, Jimmy’z. Ms Foulon says, among the most exquisite restaurants are Beef Bar in Fontvieille, the supreme fare by Joel Robuchon at Metropole Hote and Alain Ducasse’s La Trattoria. Trattoria is also notable for offering stunning views. For an outdoor lunch, it’s hard to go past the roof terrace of Monte Carlo’s Oceanographic Museum. Interior of The Sovereign - Ocean Alliance

Spa treatments excel at Monte Carlo’s Les Thermes Marin where a day pass is available to a gym, pool and terrace, and ESPA in the Metropole Hotel. Major Monaco attractions to include are the Princes Palace, the private residence of the ruling Prince, open to public this season from April 2nd to October 31st, and Saint Nicholas (or Monaco) Cathedral, where many of the Grimaldi’s, including Grace Kelly and Rainier III, are buried. Away from the indoors, a must are Monaco’s magical gardens. The 7000 square metre Japanese gardens emulate a larger landscape with a hill, mountain, waterfall, beach and brook while the Jardin Exotique is on the side of a cliff and home to more than 1,000 cacti species, a collection started at the turn of the 20th century. But the best part of Jardin Exotique is the panorama of the principality and the French and Italian Riviera. Further along the French Riviera, Ms Foulon tips one of the best (if not the best) beaches is Plage Mala, Cap d’Ail. The sandy stretch leading to crystal blue water is often voted the most beautiful on the Cote d’Azur. The beach bar and restaurant here make this place particularly hard to leave. If the Cote d’Azur becomes too crowded for your liking, Ms Foulon says those in the know head to the Porquerolles Islands, a short cruising distance from St Tropez. Cruising in Croatia

From the French Riviera, sail on to Corsica, where a day can be spent at paradisiacal beach Plage de la Rondinara and followed by a foray into the chic haven of Calvi, well known for it's bewitching nightlife. On neighbouring Sardinia, Ms Foulon says one of the most stunning locations is the 20km-long coastal stretch, Costa Smeralda, on the island’s north east. Costa Smeralda is filled with white sand beaches and rocky coves flanked by stylish hotels and restaurants brimming with the freshest of seafood and cuisine. With its artisan traditions, this sliver of Sardinia is where to find lovely local handicrafts. Croatia is the most requested destination in recent times, says Mr Reid, which is why The Moorings has bases now in both Dubrovnik and Agane. As with all high-end charter operations, your wish is their command. “We can go wherever the clients want,” he says, “we’re not on a schedule.” Montenegro, bordering Croatia, has emerged as a luxe Med hot spot, even being tagged ‘the next Monaco for yacht charters’. It

helps that Boat International magazine is holding its second annual Superyacht Rendezvous here from July 7th -9th, an event attended by hundreds of superyacht owners and target for networking of the highest levels. All good things must come to an end, and nowadays the final months of summer in the Mediterranean are heralded by two large and equally prestigious events, the Monaco Yacht Show (September 28th – October 1st) and sailing regatta Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez (September 26th to October 2nd). If you find yourself at the regatta, be sure to ring out the final evening at Le Club 55 on Pampelonne beach or Byblos Hotel’s Les Caves du Roy nightclub.
