Steven Jolson designed 3 level home Prestigious, private Toorak address Extensive living and entertaining areas Scale & attention to detail Indoor lap pool

C

ontemporary and commanding in presence, this 2010 award winning home features scale and attention to detail on a level rarely seen. Set on a quiet leafy Toorak street, with an anodized aluminium light-reflecting front fence, the entrance to this amazing home is both intriguing and inviting. A large mound of asparagus ferns adds colour, movement and contrast to the large protruding concrete colonnades that provide a protected entrance and modern take on a port cochere. The frosted glass front door reveals a warm light filled expansive living space divided by a glass atrium and pair of partition walls that delineate formal and informal living areas. The elegant formal dining and living space overlook an elevated outdoor terrace that runs a good deal of the length of the home and seamlessly connects the indoor and outdoor spaces via floor to ceiling glass doors. Honed, heated Australian Bluestone walkways contrast with American Oak floors and the solid blade weight bearing wall provides a wonderful backdrop for a dramatic art collection. The kitchen and informal living area are spectacularly appointed with a diverse range of hidden yet exquisite features that add comfort and wow to this amazing property. The kitchen is complemented by a large pantry as well as a separate scullery and incorporates an extensive collection of Miele appliances. A choice of lift or American Oak stairs provide access to the 20 metre indoor pool, gym and entertainment level below or the bedroom floor above. The master bedroom encompasses a luxurious en-suite, expansive dressing room, sitting area and a rooftop terrace. Two guest bedrooms share a large Cararra Marble bathroom whilst a library lined corridor leads to his and hers offices incorporating floor to ceiling sliding room dividers and a meeting room which could also easily be utilised as fourth and fifth bedrooms. This truly unique estate will appeal to the most discerning of buyers. It represents leading edge architecture and truly encapsulates the art of creating a wonderful balance between form and function.

The Waternest

Join Unique Estates for a tour of the Waternest 100 - an eco-friendly floating habitat, designed by Giancarlo Zema for EcoFloLife

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

T

he idea of a totally ecological floating habitat is rather appealing in this day and age of city grime, industrial waste, pollution, concrete towers and seemingly endless urban sprawl. It is as though the world predicted by Charlie Chaplin in his master oeuvre ‘Modern Times’ of 1936 (itself an homage to Fritz Lang’s now lost 1927 expressionist view of dystopia, ‘Metropolis’), or that of another Charles, Dickens in his Victorian novels such as ‘Hard Times’ published in 1854, really has come to pass. And yet of course there are many who have now realised that before it is too late that there is an alternative, another and better way to live our lives. Whilst the global warming debate rages on, we have all come to appreciate that whatever the cause, that our planet cannot simply be utilised as a strip mine, that we cannot continue to take and take without putting back. We have come to understand that we have to work in harmony with nature if we are not all to lead lives that directly resemble the images of the Brazilian social documentary photojournalist Sebastiao Salgado. Even popular stories such as James Cameron’s 2009 film, ‘Avatar’ now warn us of the dangers of opening Pandora’s Box. The renowned Italian architect Giancarlo Zema of the Giancarlo Zema Design Group founded in 2001 and based in Rome specialises in semisubmerged architectural structures, marine parks, floating habitats and yacht design. Zema is a man whose whole working life is defined by water and the possibility of returning to the blue habitat from which man originally came and which covers over two-thirds of the globe. Zema’s vision has been variously described by the Sunday Times in 2004 as, “design in the brave new water world”, whilst in 2005 the New York Times referred to the Group’s work as, “the new design of aquatic life”. U nique Luxur y

Giancarlo Zema and his colleagues are striving to turn the world on its head and with UK company EcoFloLife have designed and created what is the incredibly simple but important idea of an eco-friendly floating housing unit called the WaterNest 100. After many years of research the idea of the WaterNest 100 is a reality. This reality takes the form of an all encompassing 100 sqm circular residential unit, 12 m in diameter and 4 m high. It is made entirely of recycled glued laminated timber upon a recycled aluminium hull drawing on Zema’s expertise in boat design. The WaterNest 100 is designed to be able to float on any calm water area, including the sea, as well as rivers, lakes, bays and atolls in any temperate climate. Designed and manufactured in a pod system it can easily be transported and moved to an alternative spot should you wish to take it with you. Using materials and sustainable production systems means that as much as 98% of the unit is recyclable and it is classified as a low-consumption residential habitat due to its sophisticated internal natural micro-ventilation and air conditioning systems. In keeping with the idea of the nest, its egg like design makes it look natural rather than something created by the hand of man, and it enhances the feel of living on and over the water with large windows and balconies blurring the line between inside and outside. Bathroom and kitchen skylights sit on the roof alongside sufficient solar panels to provide energy needs for the interior which comprises a living area, dining room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, though this layout can be configured according to one’s requirements. The interior of the WaterNest 100 contains a high level of finish and quality fixtures and all are designed using recycled and recyclable materials. At the same time these materials provide a comfortable and contemporary style provided by natural and warm wood finishes. The feeling of being at one with nature is continuously enhanced by the ambience and style created by the architect’s vision. Over a coffee on the Corso Como in Milan talking with Sara Sky Schutte, one of the owners of EcoFloLife, I was impressed by the obvious commitment to creating a sustainable habitat for the future. This young American woman was not simply paying lip service to the ecological benefits of the WaterNest which can be configured as

domestic dwelling, office cum studio, exhibition or retail space or even a lounge bar, café or small restaurant. EcoFloLife’s commitment to the cause is evident and so too is that of the architect himself, with Zema being a partner in the project as his brain child is water-born. Whilst it is early days, the interest in the WaterNest 100, only launched in the second quarter of 2015 has been considerable. With a cost well under a million US dollars we are not talking of a dwelling that is obtainable only by the seriously wealthy. The emphasis throughout, as well as being ecologically sound and environmentally friendly is on luxury and comfort; no spartan dwelling this, despite all the good intentions! What we experience with the WaterNest is a dwelling that will satisfy a desire to live comfortably and well, and at the same time satisfy the need not to destroy the world which we inhabit. The endeavour initiated with Giancarlo Zema’s creativity and designs and brought to fruition by EcoFloLife is to be applauded. It is not some hare-brained scheme of fantasy living and wishful thinking but a well thought out proposition that makes sense financially and ecologically. There are of course still hurdles to be cleared. At this stage the WaterNest is currently designed to be used only in warmer climes but it is feasible that it could ultimately be utilised in places such as Scandinavia or New Zealand where it would be well received in both areas where there is plenty of appropriate water. Planning permission and all local regulations will vary of course from country to country but EcoFloLife have already spoken with governments and local authorities and the purchase price of the WaterNest includes them taking care of all the red tape on one’s behalf. Is it a boat or is it a house? I do not know, but it is certainly far removed from the traditional idea of a house boat. It is bespoke and beautiful. As babies we are born from water and it seems that this floating experience is a wonderful way to live; a return to the womb, to the water nest from whence we came. Thank you to Zema’s ‘innovative semi-submerged architecture studio’ for showing us one way forward. uilt in 1860 by Richard Mutton for the Webb family, Mutton Falls was originally used as a farmhouse and dairy and has a wonderfully colourful history. More recently, the homestead has been lovingly restored with careful consideration and for several years it was utilized as a bed and breakfast and events space. BURBERRY PRORSUM

The classics were all there, of course, they always are. The inks, the charcoals and the blacks that traditionally catch the eye of the up-and-coming design-savvy man about town. Only this fall 2015 season Burberry’s design team, led superbly by the talented Mr Christopher Bailey, have ensured they are relegated to the flip side, warming the bench while the real stars shine. Colour and lots of it is the true star of Bailey’s ball with inks, greens, ochres, camels, purples, charcoals, reds, fuchsias and turquoise reigning supreme. Labelled ‘Classically Bohemian’, the collection pairs paisley and floral shirts inspired by quilts from near the designer’s birthplace with ponchos or dramatic fringed shawls. “Decorative and free” was the way Bailey described the mood and he couldn’t have been more on the money. LOUIS VUITTON

As a brand synonymous with the world of art, innovation and travel, French design house Louis Vuitton loves nothing more than taking its customers on an epic journey when presenting its new season collections. And the pre-fall 2015 offering is no exception. This year the label’s 36-year-old style director Kim Jones chose one of his favourite designers Christopher Nemeth (1959 - 2010) as his muse and the site of Vuitton’s first store outside of France – London – as his key source of inspiration. Jones, himself is a graduate of the city’s famed Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design College, drew on the emergence of rebellious fashion movements which were elevated from the street to the catwalk in the British capital in the late 1980s for the creative behind his offering. Boasting an array of chic outerwear and youthful separates, sweaters and turtlenecks dominate while bomber jackets constructed from suede and layered over motif scarves also appear in Jones’ line up. Leather aviator jackets with sheer lining and short plaid coats are among the standouts of the collection while baggy corduroy trousers complete the modern man look. 34

DIOR HOMME

The preppy college adolescent has been given a stylish new makeover courtesy of Kris Van Assche. As the man charged with guiding the iconic fashion house’s menswear offering into a new era, the 39-year-old Belgian artistic director has taken the traditional concept of sportswear for pre-fall 2015 and turned it on its ear. Fusing a contemporary palette of ochre with traditional uniform shades of green, blue and grey, he has merged the two to deliver a locker room look sure to appease anyone with XY chromosomes. Drawing inspiration from the year 1947 – the year when the brand’s legendary name sake Christian Dior presented his first collection to the press and with it became an international success – he has introduced the numbers 4 and 7 as a stylish motif across the range, appearing on items from sweaters to suiting. Bringing the yuppie code up to date, suit jackets appear with a mix of two or four buttons but are refreshed with leather sleeves or knitted cuffs.

PRADA

Continuing her obsession with investigating the influence that men’s fashion has on women’s fashion and vice versa, Miuccia Prada elected to show her men’s and women’s fall offerings under one roof this season. With the exception of a hint of beige in some of the men’s shirting and accessories on offer, almost the entire collection appeared in black, grey or navy. Where usually she would leave it up to journalists, buyers and consumers themselves to interpret the meaning behind the collections, for her fall/winter 2015 men’s offering she supplied notes that offered the briefest of thoughts behind her new offering. She stated: “This first part of the Autumn/Winter 2015 fashion show continues Prada’s analysis of the relationship between men and women. What are the unexpected possibilities, the various relationships, that may occur between the way men and women can or would dress? The way they represent themselves? This is a subject always under investigation. The influences of one upon the other are non-linear, asymmetrical, unobvious but always profound. Gender is a context and context is often gendered.” The freedom to interpret the looks a number of different ways was further evidenced in the key pieces on offer where men’s and women’s ensembles, delivered in both matte and polished fabrics, were melded together, appearing almost genderneutral. Just the way Madame Prada prefers it. 38

ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA

If anyone ever had any doubts about Zegna design head Stefano Pilati’s green credentials they will almost certainly be considering a rethink following the release of the fashion house’s Fall/Winter 2015 menswear line. Zegna is already considered something of a leader in this field with its impressive eco credentials coming via its consistent commitment to social and environmental activities via its development and production of yarn, cloth and garments made from natural fibres. However this season Pilati takes the concept of the eco-leader theme and runs with it. The former YSL head talking extensively to experts in sustainable fabrics before devouring a Harris Tweed Authority archive to base the collection around, selecting on both “authenticity” and “recyclability”. Selecting more than 20 cuts, he duplicates them in cashmere or cashmere silk. In one case even covering the tweed with recycled plasticised coating. In addition he adds plaids and black leather, velvets and corduroys. In styling his “eco-leaders” Pilati’s creates uniforms of sorts with jackets boasting softly sculpted detail with pleated or gathered pockets. Pants are either elasticated at the bottom or multifunctional. His colour selection is based around a palette of greys, charcoals, browns, khakis, sages, mints, salmons, oxblood, plum, black and dark blues. U nique Luxur y

M

entioning ‘luxury lodge’ and ‘South Africa’ in the same sentence evokes images of chandelier-bedecked safari camps where wildlife is the star of the show. This is why Grande Provence, an historic wine estate 45 minutes from Cape Town near Franschhoek, stands apart. Here its food, wine and premium accommodation taking centre stage over lions, elephants and giraffes. At this retreat, indulgences involve relaxing, imbibing and simply enjoying life amid a serene setting of vineyards and expansive grounds as opposed to bumping around in a safari truck all day. Grande Provence estate, established in 1694, is now one of South Africa’s leading destinations since coming into the ownership of Huka Retreats founder Alex Van Heeren. He has applied to this 300-year-old property the same talent for transforming isolated places into heavenly retreats that he did to New Zealand’s lauded Huka Lodge and Fiji’s Dolphin Island. Huka Retreats prides itself on excelling at understated style, elegance and discrete service, and the swag of awards and glowing reviews this South African destination has received are testament to his success. Arrivees receive an indication of the lavish comforts awaiting them the minute they drive onto the property. The road through the estate leading to the main lodge reveals beautiful scenes of trees and vineyards before the impressive white walled complex appears. Accommodation comes in the form of two plush ‘cottages’ – the Owner’s Cottage and La Provencale for larger groups and families. The Owner’s cottage has a private pool and spa, and La Provencale a plunge pool among its lovely garden. Mr van Heeren engaged New Zealand interior designer Virginia Fisher to reinvent both cottages, the woman who rose to fame after bringing her vision to the once simple settlement of Huka Lodge on NZ’s North Island. Now open for 20 years, it is still rated one of the world’s premium hideaways. Ms Fisher has indeed again worked her magic here on the other side of the world, filling rooms with the kind of décor that one traveller commented was so gorgeous it made them want to take everything home in their suitcase. Grande Provence’s restaurant serves awardwinning menus guided by executive chef, Australian ex-pat Darren Roberts who has introduced such decadence as slow roasted Karoo U nique Luxur y

lamb neck and truffle tiramisu to his offerings. The wine is of course fabulous, made by a passionate team whose work has delivered Grande Provence numerous accolades over the years. Indeed the estate has been winning top awards ever since its first flagship wine, Grande Provence 2004 was launched in October 2007. The collection comprises pinot noir/chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and a muscat D’Alexandre Dessert Wine. As well as lodging Grande Provence is famous for its leading art gallery. Complete with a sculpture garden, both feature works from South Africa’s leading as well as emerging artists, alongside a shop selling fine African artefacts and designer jewellery. The lavish Owner’s Cottage is set within expansive grounds and positioned to take in vistas of the surrounding landscape of rolling hills, valleys and rugged mountains in the distance.

Within the Owner’s Cottage are four double rooms with en suites and the added luxury of a deluxe suite filled with elegant furnishings in shades of white. A covered patio with a dining setting looks out over the manicured lawn to the glittering private pool surrounded by deck chairs. Special packages designed just for the Owner’s Cottage focus on the exceptional food and wine to be experienced here. Indulgences contained within a two night stay are an eight course degustation and on the other evening, a pre dinner complimentary glass of the estate’s Wine of the Month with canapés and a bespoke Chef’s Table dinner. Guests are also delivered one of the wineries best sauvignon blancs, a gourmet picnic hamper, a special food and wine pairing experience or an 18-hole round of golf at Pearl Valley. Relaxation is paramount and guests are treated to an in-room couples spa session and full body massages. U nique Luxur y

An even larger private cottage, La Provencale, is also part of Grande Provence’s offerings. Larger, with two more bedrooms plus en suites, it is suited to families and larger groups who can avail themselves of the shared sitting room. This lodge is also surrounded by private grounds and features a plunge pool. Packages aside, guests can at any time visit the world-renown French restaurant, consistently voted among South Africa’s best. Discretion is a hallmark of Huka Retreats resulting in many private dining areas also being available around the estate. If guests manage to pull themselves away from the comfort of their cosy cottage or restaurant table, the town of Franschhoek nearby is a good place to seek distraction, not to mention a place to walk around and build up the appetite again. As the central town surrounded by a valley of more than 50 wineries, Franschhoek offers everything to entertain a traveller from cafes and designer shops to a cheese and wine emporium. But be warned: resisting filling your bags with even more to eat and drink will prove just as difficult as not trying every morsel and tipple offered by the gracious hosts at Grande Provence.

On the Trail of BRUCE MCLAREN Today McLaren’s home is in Woking, England, but the story started nearly 80 years ago on the other side of the world. We return to New Zealand in a McLaren 650s spider to trace the early years of the company’s eponymous founder, Bruce McLaren.

The Flying Kiwi’s part in the McLaren legend is not as well or widely known as it should be, even in his home country. In 1958, a humble New Zealander named Bruce McLaren left his tiny country (its population was around a quarter the size of London’s) and travelled to Europe to race cars. He won his first Formula 1 race at the age of 22, and went on to succeed in all kinds of motorsport all over the world, winning races in cars he’d designed and built himself, then bequeathing his name to one of the most successful Formula 1 teams of all time. What has since grown to become McLaren Automotive (and the wider McLaren Technology Group) started life with the more antipodean name of Bruce McLaren Racing. And yet the flying Kiwi’s part in the McLaren story is not as widely known as it should be. Even in his home country, where the multitalented Bruce first revealed his abilities behind the wheel and with a spanner, he didn’t always receive the recognition his achievements cried out for. We travelled to New Zealand to drive a McLaren 650S Spider on the trail of this remarkable man and his astonishing racing career, and to meet the people keeping the Bruce McLaren legend alive today.

A 14-year-old with a deep passion for cars, Bruce set up his own wild and wooded version of a racing circuit. The entry to the Bruce McLaren Trust is a tiny doorway with a tiddling sign over the lintel, tucked away in the forecourt of a bustling mechanic’s workshop in Auckland – and it seems appropriate that you can smell the oily metallic scents of car innards as you enter. Upstairs, what was a cramped two-bedroom flat is now a museum, crammed with trophies, medals and photos from around the world. All were collected by Bruce who, back in the early 1950s, spent his formative years at this above-the shop address with his parents Les and Ruth and his elder sister. Out of the back windows you can see the yard where, as a 14-year-old with a deep and abiding passion for cars and all their mysteries, he set up his own wild and wooded version of a racing circuit half a world away. His younger sister, Jan, remembers it well: ‘He made up this figure of eight in the back yard, a mini Brands Hatch around all the trees, with a hard-lock turn around the clothes line and a plum tree, then a hairpin around the lemon tree, and back up past the garage – it used to scare the hell out of his uncles, watching him do it,’ she laughs.

Never one to shy away from competition, Bruce takes on the man who helped launch his career – Jack Brabham

McLaren’s Service Station in Auckland provided a business for Les, a home for the family, and a place for Bruce to fettle his Austin 7 Ulster

Bruce McLaren always seemed to be in a hurry, on racetracks and in life, and perhaps that was because he was making up for lost time. Aged just 10, he contracted Perthes disease in his leg, which meant living in a medical facility – and in traction – for two years. It also left him with one leg noticeably shorter than the other. ‘From the age of 12 to 13 he had to learn to walk again,’ Jan explains. ‘He came out of Wilson Home for disabled children in Auckland and went straight into high school on crutches, but it didn’t slow him down at all. Once he recovered from it, he just got on with things. He was always just very focused on doing what he enjoyed, and that was always going to be following Dad into racing cars.’ Parked on the forecourt of what used to be McLaren’s Service Station is the impossibly small and spindly Austin 7 workshop ‘hack’ that Bruce learnt to drive in. Climbing into it today, especially after a stint in the 650S Spider, it feels implausibly cramped and spartan. The tiny gear lever sits under your left leg – and if you can imagine trying to type with your toes while sitting in a camp chair, you’ll get an idea of what the pedals are like. Driving it at all would be a challenge; the thought of driving it fast is mind-boggling. ‘Oh yes, they were absolutely tiny those Austins – and you wouldn’t believe the speeds they got up to in them, with tyres no wider than your hand,’ Jan reminisces. ‘Bruce was a designer, engineer and driver – he was able to think about the processes going on in the cars he was racing’ The staff of the Bruce McLaren Trust speak about Bruce with the kind of awe that Elvis fans reserve for The King. Particular pride is taken in a poster showing all of the race cars that Bruce drove or designed – or both – during his unique career. ‘As a Kiwi, I take huge pride in the fact that Bruce McLaren went abroad, formed his own motor racing team and was incredibly competitive in so many different disciplines,’ raves David Rhodes, a motorsport

fanatic who has worked at the museum for 13 years, all of them clearly joyful. ‘Initially it was hill climbs and sprints, later Formula 1, Can-Am, Formula 2 and endurance racing. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, and in 1967 he won the Sebring 12 Hours with Mario Andretti. ‘I’ve found 450 races for Bruce in all those different disciplines and he achieved a 43 percent podium success rate. His busiest year was 1964, when he had 44 races, covering both hemispheres. He’s been described as a designer, engineer and driver in one – he was able to think about the processes going on in the cars he was racing.’

Bruce McLaren crosses the finish line in first place at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix Below: Bruce’s family, including his younger sister Jan, welcome him home after his second season on the European racing circuit

On our way out of Auckland we travel along Bruce McLaren Road, which features a giant mural of Bruce at one end, behind a railway line, and a school named after him in the middle, just past an intersection with Silverstone Place. Around here, nearly everyone knows about Bruce, who is referred to more commonly as ‘a bloody legend’ – though it’s surprising (and sad) how many young New Zealanders we meet look blank at the mention of his name. It seems strange that a man who raced with Jack Brabham, and who took on both Stirling Moss and Graham Hill, is not as famous as those giants of motorsport are in their countries. Just a few minutes from Bruce McLaren Road lies a soaring, spectacular stretch of black top known as Scenic Drive, which the McLaren 650S Spider makes short, sharp work of. It’s a drive that Bruce must have taken many times, and we reckon he would have loved this McLaren as much as we did today. His sister, Jan, concurs: ‘He’d love the design of the car, because when you look at the road car Bruce designed – the 1969 M6GT – there is a clear evolutionary link between the two. Just like when McLaren built its first road car, the F1 supercar, the similarity between it and the M6GT, even with 40 years between, was remarkable. ‘Bruce was always streets ahead with design and engineering, and he worked so hard. He had a small team of 50 people and they were racing and they were building a road car. Bruce, who spent his every spare moment as a child hanging around the workshop, got his licence the day he turned 15. He entered his first race, a hill climb at Muriwai Beach on the ruggedly beautiful west coast, four months later. The locals, including Bruce’s father, had raced on the beach itself for many years, but one day Les discovered a winding track, and decided it would make a good hill climb. For the event, father and son shared the Austin 7 Ulster they’d built from scratch. What was once a tree-lined track with stunning ocean views and striking drop-offs is now a winding road lined with armco barriers and beach houses, peopled by buses of tourists sucking up the vistas through their phones. Slicing up 78

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

what is now Waitea Road in the 650S Spider, it’s easy to see how its steep, tightening turns would have been an enlivening challenge in the open Austin (which now resides at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England). ‘It was a beautiful spot with magnificent views straight out to sea, but it was a scary, unsealed road – and that’s where Bruce learnt to handle cars moving around on him, in any conditions,’ Jan explains. ‘We’ve got footage of him going up that hill in the dust and you can see the lines and the speed he was going at compared with Dad, even at that point. He started setting faster times than Dad from very early on, and so Dad just stepped back from the racing and became his pit manager.’

The McLaren 650S Spider excels on the beautiful Scenic Drive, which runs through the hills west of Auckland

Our 650S Spider, kindly loaned by McLaren Auckland (bottom picture), isn’t the first McLaren to take to the Pukekohe track

Bruce’s performance at the New Zealand Grand Prix in 1958 caught Jack Brabham’s eye and launched his career Our next stop is Ardmore Airport, where the first New Zealand Grand Prix was held, and where Bruce took part in his first ever international race some 60 years ago. Jan McLaren now lives nearby, and gets sentimental each time she drives past. ‘He was still very young, just 18,’ Jan says. ‘But from there he went on to win his first Formula 1 Grand Prix aged just 22 – the youngest winner ever at that time – and it all just happened so fast. ‘Him going overseas was a huge thing. It was the first time New Zealand had ever sent a driver to Europe. He was chosen by a board that included Jack Brabham to get a scholarship to go, while he was still at university. He said he’d take a year off and come back, which he did, but only to race, and for Christmases.’ The airfield offers a pretty basic set-up: two long straights (otherwise known as runways) joined by slip roads, but this was the home of the New Zealand GP from 1954 to 1962 (Stirling Moss won here three times), and Bruce’s performance here in 1958, at the age of just 21, was enough to catch the eye of Brabham, who helped launch his career. Our final pit stop is at the Pukekohe circuit – the scene of one of Bruce’s many landmark achievements: it was here that he won the 1964 New Zealand Grand Prix, driving for his eponymous team. Today it’s still a hairy and scary racetrack, despite the chicanes that have been added to slow it down. Six years after that victory, Bruce was killed while testing a new Can-Am car at Goodwood in England. He was just 32 – yet he’d already pondered on the subject of his own mortality in his 1964 autobiography: ‘To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one’s ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.’ It’s a quote that will no doubt feature prominently at the planned Bruce McLaren Heritage Centre, which it is hoped will be built in the near future. Duncan Fox, a member of the Board of Trustees at the Bruce McLaren Trust, tells us: ‘We’re raising funds to set up a world-class tourist destination, and we’ve approached Weta Workshop [the imagineering house famous for its work on the Lord Of The Rings movies] to give us some ideas. You’ll be able to follow Bruce’s trail, as you’re doing, and we’ll make it as interactive as we can. It’s going to be fantastic.’ If the Heritage Centre comes to fruition, then perhaps – finally – Bruce McLaren will get the recognition his efforts so richly deserve. U nique Luxur y

A

s if any one needs an excuse to stay in Santa Margherita Ligure or Portofino on the Italian Riviera it was surely provided on the first weekend of the Italian summer season with a gathering of classic Riva speedboats. With the help of the Riva Historical Society and the Riva Society Italia, the local community of Santa Margherita Ligure organised a ‘Tribute to Carlo Riva’ in its magnificent harbour. Riva boats, loved by the great and the good, have long been synonymous with that period, post war in the 1950s and 1960s, known as La Dolce Vita. From St Tropez in the South of France along the Mediterranean coastline to Positano in the South of Italy were the hot spots and flesh pots of sun and sea that geographically epitomised the phrase that was encapsulated in the 1960 film of the same name by Federico Fellini. Nowhere typifies the place and time better than Santa Margherita Ligure. With its luxury hotels with evocative names such as The Grand Hotel Miramare or the Lido Palace, nowhere is a better spot from which to explore the neighbouring unspoiled beaches and resorts of the Riviera; Portofino, Camogli, Rapallo, Sestri Levante, San Fruttuoso. If the elegance and lifestyle of the chic hotels, the sun drenched beaches, the long lunches, the world of Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Sofia Loren, Alain Delon, Jacqueline Kennedy, Gianni Agnelli is still to be found in S Margherita Ligure, it is positively transubstantiated when a Riva speedboat is present. And at the ‘Tributo Carlo Riva’ there were 20 Rivas on display to the public in the harbour and re-enacting la dolce vita on behalf of their owners, transporting them from one glamorous setting to the next. From the early 1950 Riva Scoiattolo (a little outboard powered runabout called the squirrel in Italian) through to the 2104 Riva Ram Montecarlo Offshorer, all the great models from the most well known and greatest Italian name in luxury speedboats were in evidence: a Tritone, a Florida, seven Super Florida, two Ariston, three Junior, a Rudy, a Super Aquarama and three Special Aquarama, the ‘Ferrari of the Sea’!

The first evening kicked off in style with an invitation for an ‘aperidinner’ on board the gentleman’s motor yacht, ‘Red’. Built in 1947 by Silvers Marine (their first yacht rolled down the slipway at Rosneath in Scotland in 1910), ‘Red’ is the elegant mode of luxe transport just as one might expect of our host, the President of the Riva Historical Society. The following dawn unfortunately was not ‘rosy-fingered’ as Homer would have put it, nor did she wear ‘her veil the colour of saffron’, but despite the milky-grey water and sky the flotilla of beautiful craft navigated out to sea. First stop was a cold, in more ways than one, picnic luncheon in Portofino, the old fishing village set in a natural harbour with its pastel-coloured houses, so beautiful that it is now one of the most famous places the world over. Things warmed up in the evening however with a Gala dinner and dance (think Volare) at the Ristorante Barracuda on the beach of the Grand Hotel Miramare. This was the beach where in 1951 Gigi Figoli set up the first Italian water ski school, using of course a Riva Florida called Barracuda to tow his clients in the ever increasingly popular sporting activity. The next morning of our odyssey was again un-Homeric, but, undaunted, the crews of the Rivas entered into the spirit of la dolce vita, donning period costume to match their craft as they paraded around the harbour in a contest of elegance. A fast run was then made across the Gulf of Tigullio to Sestri Levante. Speeding across the water the sun at last broke through as we made our way towards the ancient seaside resort. Here the buildings are in traditional Ligurian style, featuring trompe l’oeil effects, their portals topped with beautiful slate carved friezes. Mooring in the picturesque and arresting Baia del Silenzio (Bay of Silence), a splendid fish lunch ensued. Sitting on the terrace of the Hotel Miramare (another one), we gazed at the splendid fleet made fast in the tranquil waters. The sight of so many classic boats caused much interest amongst the holiday makers on the packed beach now resplendent in the warming sun. U nique Luxur y

After the final course for lunch and a final glass of wine it was another high speed blast to the fantasy hamlet of San Fruttuoso. Only accessible by a four hour hike across the steep hills from Portofino or by the much more relaxing method of small boat, the post card Xth Century Abbey sits nestled above a small beach. I was happily reminded of my first visit to this little jewel five years ago when we were forced to stay an extra night at the wonderfully basic Albergo da Giovanni, so heavy was the sea-swell it prevented access to the small jetty to any boat whatsoever. How different the beach with church, abbey, medieval watchtower and just a handful of other buildings including the albergo are from the chic, gold-bikini luxe of Portofino just on the other side of the very, very steep cliffs. The real dolce vita

The concourse d’Elegance

Thence back to to charming S Margherita Ligure with its incredible scenic beauty, bustling shops and night life, and protected, wind-sheltered harbour. What a spot to tie up and appreciate the sheer beauty and lines of the Rivas. A boat, yes: a mode of transport, yes: but what boats and how they do transport you! In the flattest of seas they skim, like a well thrown stone, across the surface of the water on the plane as no other boat can. In heavier going, the largest of them, the Tritone and Aquarama, twin engined both, surge through the chop and swell in a manner more exhilarating and comfortable than any ‘plastic’ hull. To be behind the wheel of the most stylish and expressive speedboat ever dreamt of, let alone crafted by the hand of man is redolent of la dolce vita. The resonance of the living wood, flexing hull on the sea, the fittings and fixtures with their nod to American automobiles of the period yet in the same instance so much more sophisticated and modish, pitch one head first into a heady, sweetly remembered past. A past, that for a few days at least can be brought to the present on the idyllic Ligurian Riviera. To ride a Riva in Santa Margherita Ligure is to live a dream not afforded to many; a dream of being in the right place, at nearly the right time in the perfect vessel for the task in hand. The task of looking good, feeling good, than for no other reason that life is good: La Dolce Vita in Riviera. As William Shakespeare’s Prospero said in Act IV, Scene I of The Tempest, “Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits, and Are melted into air, into thin air; And like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-clapp’d tow’rs, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our little life Is round with a sleep.”

View of Santa Margherita Ligure Harbour form the Lido Palace Hotel

For helping me in my revels my thanks go to; the event organisers; the Mayor of S Margherita Ligure; the Association of Hoteliers of Santa Margherita; the Hotel Lido Palace; Rodolfo Gozzi of Invictus Boats. U nique Luxur y

Approved for five-day trading and over 184 sqm of roofed area, this building would also make a great training facility, yoga space or gallery. Or, it could easily be converted back to additional accommodation (STCA). The main house, built by the current owners sits perched on a leafy ridge overlooking Possum Creek below. It features four bedrooms (or three plus study) and a large yet cosy lounge with separate kitchen dining area opening onto shaded verandas that make for seamless indoor-outdoor entertaining and of course relaxing! Downstairs there is a large laundry, ample storage, a media room or possible additional training space and a large four-car lock-up garage. CHRISTIAN DIOR

It was not by chance Tokyo was selected as the showground of choice for the release of Christian Dior’s first ever pre-fall collection. Raf Simons, the luxury house’s creative director, has a relationship history with Japan dating back 20 years when visionary local male fashionistas were among the first to embrace the Belgian’s menswear label back in the 1990s. In addition the luxury fashion house Simons works for has several flagships stores in the country and has often spoken of its admiration for the way the Japanese liberally express themselves through their fashion choices. But eager to take inspiration from the future rather than the past there was little reference to tradition in any form with Simons seeking to move beyond the elegant red carpet gowns the brand is synonymous with, instead embracing a more every day aesthetic for stylish city folk to immerse themselves in.

PRADA

The House of Prada offers modern contemporaries a lesson in how to truly sort the sartorial wheat from the chaff by allowing old school Prada to make a welcome return to the runway in the label’s pre-fall season collection. Miuccia Prada continues her fascinating exploration of both the similarities and differences between the way men and women dress by including a number of seemingly gender-neutral pieces in this collection. Save for a few bared backs and gros-grain bows and ribbons, Prada presents a somber uniform of pleated pinafore dresses and utilitarian coats with just the right amount of elegance, simplicity and clean lines to keep everyone honest. The colour palette consists almost entirely of black, save for a blue, red and white tartan coat, some splashes of grey and neutrals and a beautiful silver above-the-knee sleeveless dress. Alongside textured fabrics and wool, the choice of the iconic Prada black nylon plays a key role, used also in eveningwear to add a touch of modernity to feminine elegance. Speaking in Milan post collection launch Prada herself told US Vogue: “I always think why can’t we have the same thing for women as for men? Known and simple things. Really, that is what I like. Easier to do than ‘fashion’.”

LOUIS VUITTON

This may be the first pre-fall collection womenswear creative director Nicolas Ghesquière has ever done for the French fashion house, but it is a collection almost three decades in the making. Having dreamily begun sketching dress designs in his schools books at the tender age of 12, the man the British Fashion Awards named its International Designer of the Year last year has been quick to use the 1970s as a key reference point as part of his latest offerings. Continuing the lean silhouette first evidenced in his previous outings in Paris and Monaco, this season the former Balenciaga creative director offers a more relaxed take on his vision for the season. High-waisted cropped pants, twobutton blazers and A-line skirts are shown alongside cool bomber jackets (complete with fury collar) while ribbed turtlenecks are teamed with colour-blocked dresses or double denim in a classic nod to the fashions of the day.

From a fabrication perspective, texture is key with denim treatments offered alongside leather piping on key pieces while plenty of oversize tweed and corduroy round out the ‘70s theme. It would be hard to ignore the issues of legacy and birthright when you’re at the helm of a fashion company valued at almost £8 billion and about to celebrate its 160th year of operation. It’s harder still when your name is Christopher Bailey and just 12 months ago you reportedly became a father for the very first time. Which of course may have something to do with the fact those charged with noticing such things have pointed out that Bailey, who also acts as the brand’s chief creative director, has made a conscious effort in recent times to create new heirloom pieces. Quite aside from the status achieved by the brand’s iconic trench – whose modern incarnation first appeared more than 100 years ago - Bailey’s autumn/winter 2015 collection offers more than a passing nod to the successes of the past with high-waisted smocks, ponchos, capes, English suede fringing, mirror textiles and mixed fabrications among its offering. Titled Patchwork, Pattern and Prints, the collection boasts all manner of silhouettes with top coats, tailored and fitted outerwear and short A-lined dresses in abundance, shown to best effect with animal and camouflage printed lace, patchwork quilts and house check. In keeping with this heritage theme, Bailey employs a quilting technique named for Durham, near his birthplace in East Yorkshire. Key colours in this collection incorporate indigo, red, burgundy, teal and ochre. 116

Miu Miu

The 66-year-old creative genius behind Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada, could never be accused of losing touch with her inner child. Having created the Miu Miu brand almost solely as a creative playground inspired by her own wardrobe, Prada uses the fashion house’s first-ever formal pre-fall collection to bring her playful muse out to explore – albeit in a ladylike fashion. Tweed caplet coats, long wool walk shorts, shrunken blazers and plaid camp shirts are the order of the day and when styled with adventurous deerstalker caps and Boy Scout kerchiefs resemble something straight out of the 1920s.

Cap with leather trim detail - $620 Mary Jane shoe - $1,140 Crocodile skin boot - $2,700 www.miumiu.com Stockists: 02 9223 1688

But of course the designer, who in 2014 was listed as the 75th most powerful woman in the world, is only too aware of where her bread and butter comes from and in that regard there is plenty to keep her loyal fans placated with key retro flower prints and Miu Miu’s popular short dresses – only this time reincarnated with contrast patch pockets - also making timely appearances. While the hats in the collection point to the idea of masculine style, a sexy and feminine attitude finds its place through wool silk socks. U nique Luxur y

arbeethong’ means ‘moonlight shining on water’. Artists and poets have tried to capture the feeling of the place for nearly one hundred years – however, nothing compares to simply being there. A large number of artists, writers and musicians have visited the Lodge & Mallacoota, including E.J. Brady, Banjo Patterson and others, and this tradition of creativity and arts continues in Mallacoota today. Karbeethong Lodge is a unique, relaxed, fully-renovated guest house which dates back to 1903. The building is largely original, apart from the addition of en suite bathrooms, some reconfiguration of internal spaces, and, of course, upgrades to evolving technology such as electricity, plumbing and wireless internet. The Lodge consists of ten guest rooms, lounge, dining and kitchen, outdoor areas, and sweeping 120

Its most recent refurbishment has been in the last ten years with the emphasis, in all decisions, towards comfort and style while maintaining essential character. Half the rooms open onto the wide front veranda with spectacular views over Mallacoota coastal inlet, famous for its sunsets and superb peaceful vistas. Other rooms have bush views or open onto an internal courtyard. The owner/manager’s residence is compact but is the best room in the house – privately located, quiet, with great views over the water. It comprises lounge/dining, kitchen, bathroom and single bedroom. There is also a private veranda space, an office, a second bedroom, and an enclosed garden.

This year saw 51 outstanding and historically important classic vehicles plus seven concept and prototype cars brought together to be judged by a jury of experts. Villa d’Este, completed in 1568, is itself a place of timeless beauty and the cars on show in the nine different categories fully reflected this. The earliest vehicles on display were dedicated to pre-war coach-built luxury and included monstruous-sized Isotta Fraschini and MercedesBenz including the 1937 540K, one of only 26 two-seater styled Special Roadsters, which was part of F1 magnate Bernie Ecclestone’s collection. Other fantastic pre-war cars on show also included a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 with Spider coachwork by Zagato. In 1925 Rolls-Royce launched the first Phantom model, a name which is still represented in the current model line up. To honour the 90th anniversary of this, perhaps the most aristocratic of all motors, no less than five Phantoms, through the ages from 1929 to 1971

148

w w w.uni quees t at es. co m. a u

were parked on the luscious lawns of the Hotel’s glorious twenty five acre Renaissance park. The bright yellow 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I had an interesting accompanying story. Industrialist A.H.Chapin from Massachusetts ordered it as a Yuletide present for his show-biz wife, removing a wall Chez Chapin in order for it to be parked under the Christmas tree! Sir Anthony Bamford’s incredibly beautiful 1937 Phantom III drop head coupé with coachwork by the French company Vanvooren and subject to a stunning restoration by British firm P & A Wood was also in this class as was the 1954 Phantom IV, formerly the property of Princess Margaret, sister to Queen Elizabeth, and one of five Phantom IV cars purchased by the Royal Family.

A host of stunning coach-built coupés were also in evidence, amongst which the 1952 Vignale bodied Ferrari 212 Europa caught one’s breath for its beauty as much as the 1952 Pegaso ‘Cupola’ did for its audacity. The Pegaso is often designated as the ‘Spanish Ferrari’ and the bright chrome yellow car with red side-wall tyres shown at Villa d’Este is surely one of the most remarkable of the 87 remarkable cars manufactured in the seven years of production between 1951 and 1958. This car was first seen in February 1953 at the World Motor Show in Madison Square Garden, New York. It was purchased by Rafael Trujillo, the President of the Dominican Republic upon whose assassination in 1961 the car was confiscated by the government. Also in this class was another stunning Vignale

designed Ferrari, the only Ferrari 250 not bodied by Pinin Farina, and created for Leopold III of Belgium and his wife Liliana de Retry. For any Jaguar lover the sight of the unique Zagato bodied 1957 Jaguar XK140 was a special treat. It is an amazing looking car and to me unimaginable that this was the only one ever made. As well, of course, as cars of unbelievable style and luxury, there were also plenty of cars of speed including a special category of gentlemen’s racers, so prominent in Italy in the post war period. Great Gran Truism examples from Maserati and Ferrari but also from its less humble days, a 1954 Fiat 8V with its aluminium body and independent suspension on all four wheels. Penned by Giovanni Michelotti whilst at the Carrozeria Vignale, this ‘Otto Vu’

1971 Lamborghini Miura SV

(8V in Italian to avoid a court case in the USA by calling it a V8) competed in many a race including the 1955 Mille Miglia. Another wonderful Pegaso, a 1954 Z-102 with coupé coachwork by Touring Superleggera completed this group of vehicles. Another Pegaso Z-102, this time with convertible coachwork by the legendary Saoutchik was a representative of the class entitled ‘Hollywood on the Lake’. In this group too was a stunning Ferrari 250 GT California, but even this could not upstage the jet aircraft inspired Lancia Aurelia B52 with its six chrome exhaust pipes! Meanwhile in the ‘GT Man - Interpretations of Opulence’ class, the most wacky interpretation was 1976 Panther Six - a six wheeler looking somewhat like a demented golf buggy. It never really caught on despite creating a huge stir when first exhibited at the Earls Court Motor Show with its thunderous 600hp Cadillac Eldorado engine fitted with two superchargers and capable of 320 km/h. The cars on show were nothing short of incredible including the Lamborghini disco era supercars, a 1971 Miura SV and best Contact I have ever seen in the form of a metallic chocolate LP400. Amongst my favourites were two classic sports racers. The first a 1959 Maserati 60/61 ‘Birdcage’, so called because of its complex tubular frame construction, whilst the second, a 1964 MacLaren M1-A was driven by ace Graham Hill and also listed Elvis Presley as a driver

as it featured in film performances with him in 1966, and was later driven by Goodwood owner and organiser, Lord Charles March. However, it is possible that the 2015 Concorso will be remembered for a car that is a true spiritual successor of the original concept of the event. In 1929 the cars that were on display on these very lawns in the grounds of the Grand Hotel, the architecture of which remains largely unchanged since designed by Pellegrino Pellegrini in the sixteenth century, were all brand new and waiting to make their name. Amongst all the incredible thoroughbred veteran and vintage machines and historic classics on show, one car that stood out was not one form the past but possibly one from the future. The Concept Car and Prototype selection of vehicles takes the event back to its roots when designers and manufacturers presented the latest and most innovative models to the public. This year stunning offerings from Zagato, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Touring were shown. Nothing however could top the class, heritage, styling and unquestionable beauty of the 2015 Bentley ‘Exp 10 Speed Six”, which was the equal of any of the great masters of elegance on display. The only thing better than looking at the grand and classic cars was having a grand luncheon with a glass or two of prosecco on the terrace of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este on the lake’s edge whilst looking at those cars. F

rom a bare cow paddock in 1983 to a beautiful rainforest botanical garden, this is potentially one of the best personal environmental projects in the Byron Shire: a totally unique property.

The first of some 20,000 rainforest plants were planted on Christmas Day 1983 and, as with all botanical gardens, this property will only improve in value as it matures. This will be a truly unique legacy to pass on through the generations or an amazing environmental investment property to on-sell in the future. The gardens have been established around the ideal central main house site, well away from the boundaries and protected from wind and the summer sun, yet benefitting from the warmth of the winter sun. Here you can build your dream home, subject to council approval, potentially up

to three levels because of the site topography with room also for a three to four car garage. A 200m long tree and palm lined driveway leads to a turning circle with space for another two car garage and workshop or shed. Three phase power is already connected to the property. With the exception of the main house site, the entire 5 acres (approx.) is your garden with the feel of a peaceful and tranquil national park. The body of water on the property has been landscaped to give the illusion that there is a river heading off into the distance. All the rainforested areas require no mowing, brush cutting and little to no weeding. The combination of rainforest and a body of water has created a wellestablished habitat for over a hundred observed species of both land based animals and bird species, there is also a breeding Koala colony. The eye of innovation Conceived from frustration but born out of love Fleye is an award winning eyewear brand offering glass wearers a whole new way of seeing the world, as Tracey Porter reports.

U nique Luxur y

163

IT WASN’T THE MOST AUSPICIOUS OF STARTS. The hangovers were still subsiding from the parties ringing in the new millennium but professionally at least Annette Estø felt she had little to celebrate. An optometry teacher by trade, Estø was working as a sales manager for a Danish eyewear manufacturer when concern at the length of time it was taking her designer to get new models to market, finally got the better of her. She complained to the person in question who suggested she “try it for herself”, lest it be that easy. Never one to back down from a challenge, she put the kids to bed, sat down at her kitchen table and picked up a pencil. “When my kids were young, I could not draw anything they could recognise,” she says. 164

w w w.uni quees t at es. co m. a u

“But I found out that I did not have a problem drawing frames, it felt very natural for me. I developed a lot of new models [and] in fact, they ended up selling much better than the models my boss had designed.” A short while later Estø and colleagues Lars Halstrøm and Hanne Rosenvold Anderson plucked up the courage to venture out on their own, taking on the roles as design head, sales manager and CEO respectively. From the beginning the trio and the new entity they named Fleye – short for Fine Looking Eye – have made it their business to stand out from the crowd. “We showed the frames for the first time at a big garden party where we had invited 100 potential customers. One customer came and said ‘I want to be customer number one, so please pick out the 24 pieces you think I’ll need and I will pay right away’. He [remains] a loyal customer.”

The Danish brand has been quick to connect with a global audience tired of the cookie-cutter design of most eyewear presented before them. While it may have its foundations in Denmark, the 13-year-old label has been quickly adopted by prescription and sunglass wearers across the world and now sells across 30 markets internationally. Scandinavia accounts for the majority of its sales however emerging markets such as China and Australia (where it is distributed by Sydney group House of Brands, led by the former Australian president of Pandora Jewellery Karin Adcock) has seen a significant lift in sales of late with growth here partially aided by the fact popular royals Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were spotted wearing the brand. While reluctant to take sole credit for the growth and popularity of the Fleye range, Estø concedes the Fleye team are on to a winning formula. “Our competitors are high-end original eyewear brands. Competition is tough. The world of eyewear is overpopulated with brands. But we

do certain things differently and that has proven to be successful. We always try to surpass people’s expectations.” While there is some variation from collection to collection, Estø says the range is neither the most expensive nor the least expensive on offer with pieces in its horn and wood frame range boasting a recommended retail price of around $930 and its children’s frames selling for around $300. Having cornered the market in feather-light eyewear, each Fleye frame is constructed with a custom slim design and made from a range of allergy-friendly materials including acetate (using recycled plastic), buffalo horn, carbon fibre (with 3D effects) and Beta-Titanium – the result of which means the majority of their frames weigh less than seven grams. Of the firm belief that great eyewear should do more than improve your eyesight but also communicate who you are, Estø ensures each frame is multi-functional, making available colour matched clip-ons with

polarised lenses upon request. All sunglasses have polarised antireflective Carl Zeiss lenses and have cylinder shaped temple tips to provide additional comfort. While designing for differing face structures are among a host of challenges faced by eyewear manufacturers, Fleye has managed to get around the issue by catering for just about every size face shape available, producing large men’s frames in size 61 to petite women’s or kids’ in size 44. “When designing new collections we always have these [different face structures] in mind, so we make sure the fit is perfect. For example, in Australia there’s a demand for larger men’s frames and in Asia we need to keep their smaller nose shapes in mind,” Estø says. Fleye has also increased the depth of its frames over the past 10 years making it easer for those using progressive lenses. In addition the brand and its 30-member strong team have developed and patented a unique nose pad wire that allows the wearer to adjust placement of their glasses to ensure a customisable fit. Its innovative design proving an immediate hit with loyal customers and resulting in Fleye recognised as one of the few apparel or accessory brands ever to be singled out by judges at the prestigious Red Dot Design Awards. Currently the prestige brand produces two main collections a year, one each for spring/summer and fall/winter, but has a few mini-releases in between - no mean feat when its takes between four and six months from when the first sketch is done until the product reaches shelves. Each frame is handmade and must go through a rigorous 29-step process before it is made available to the buying public. But starting as they mean to go on, every design is born at Fleye’s residence outside the Danish capital Copenhagen in the brand’s historic 19th century studio space designed by German architect Hetsch Barfredshøj. Estø says while the beautiful manor and its “idyllic” location help with inspiration, she feels at her most creative when ever she has time to stop and tap into it. “When I am travelling, many best sellers are made in an aeroplane or when I am waiting for one. I also like to hide at my second house where nobody will disturb [me]. I need to have time to be in the mood and then it goes very smoothly and [comes] easily.” While most of the brand’s success comes down to its innovation, combined with clever design clearly built into the Fleye DNA, Estø says it’s the brand’s relationship with their end user that makes her most proud. “When I do trunk shows, I can always find a Fleye frame for a customer that brings out the best in them and highlights their best personal features. I am really proud that we have a portfolio of collections that make this possible.” Yet receiving both domestic and international recognition Estø says winning awards is not just about being singled out ahead of competitors. “When international design experts choose to honour our eyewear we are always very grateful for their recognition. I have devoted my heart and soul to these products, so receiving awards such as the iF Product Design Awards (based out of Germany) and the Red Dot honorable mention truly makes me proud. “Obviously, sales is a prerequisite for Fleye’s existence, but these awards are not about increasing sales. The awards reassure us that we are doing the right thing. We are making eyewear that makes a difference.” FROM TOP TO BOTTOM: Amber - $870; Le - $447; Loui - $498; Marin - $498; Tofa - $489; Vigga - $459

The interiors of Angel Wing are a unique blend of futuristic living and high-market indulgence. Designed over three years by renowned architect Peter Stutchbury, this property celebrates the elements of the nature in which it is embedded. A skylight performs as a prominent design feature: a natural movement of water on the roof filters the light seeping into the house, creating a dramatic effect and a play on light. Being a contemporary design, the concept of open-plan living and spacious rooms is present. Our favourite chamber of Angel Wing is where the open fireplace is found - cosy up to roast marshmallows over a naked flame and listen to the native Banksias as they echo a melody in the woods. Huka Lodge Lake Taupo

T

he forerunner of NZ’s current slew of more than 40 luxury lodges, Huka Lodge is still renown for delivering giddy standards of premium service since opening in 1984. Amazingly, it has kept them there. This exceptional retreat had its genesis just over 20 years ago when a European millionaire found a rustic 1920s cabin nestled beside a the trout-filled Waikato River. This ‘cabin’ is now a grand manor, an awardwinning Scottish-style hunting lodge (walls sporting mounted deer heads and rooms filled with plush comfortable furnishings) so famous for its superb fly-fishing and hospitality that royalty features highly among the impressively long list of superstar guests. As with most lodges of this level, it is not only the comfort and serenity evoked by intelligent interior design and architecture that lures guests. Huka Lodge is renown for service, staff being unobtrusive but always on hand for any request. Guests are made to feel only they and they alone exist. Huka Lodge offers 18 ‘Junior Lodge Suites’ overlooking the river with pluses being heated floors and deep baths, plus another Double Lodge Suite. Extra special however are the four-suite Owner’s Cottage (a favourite with Bill Gates) hidden away in the grounds overlooking the mighty 190

w w w.uni quees t at es. co m. a u

Huka Falls, and the two-suite Alan Pye Cottage, named after the Irishman who discovered the location back in the 1920s. Beautifully appointed with the finest materials, cedar and heritage stone, guests can avail themselves of a private chef, butler and splash about in private swimming pools and spas. As expected fly-fishing here is among the worlds’ best and lessons are also offered. The host of other activities offered covers many tours via helicopter (the helipad is on the lawn a few steps from the lodge), nature walks, in-room beauty treatments, several nearby golf courses including a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, horse riding, river rafting, mountain biking and more. Lake Taupo is 10 minutes away for sailing, para-gliding, water skiing and kayaking. The lodge itself has 6ha of garden and grounds through which to wander, plus tennis, petanque and croquet courts, a swimming pool and spa open to all guests. Lovers of fine food will be in heaven with the gourmet delights: nightly pre-dinner drinks and hors d’ouerves followed by five course dinners filled with exquisitely prepared lamb, lobster, Coromandel pipis and the like, and mornings that begin with generous country breakfasts. Privacy is assured with up to 20 sublime indoor and outdoor locations in which to savour not only the food but the chance to live like few ever will.

M

atakauri Lodge is the most recent of those profiled here, a creation of former Wall Street wizard Julian Robertson. It opened just before 2010, a quiet retreat secluded on a bushy hillside seven minutes from Queenstown. It offers 12 lodge rooms, along with a series of suites as well as a large main lounge and dining area perfectly placed to showcase the views of Lake Wakatipu and spectacular The Remarkable mountain range. The aptly named range is one of the most famous vistas among NZ’s embellishment of rich scenery, a series of steep craggy spires jutting into the sky that in winter are prettily peppered with snow.

Guest-Suite-Living-Room

Main-Lounge

Matakauri’s serene atmosphere created by the favoured designer of such lodges, Virginia Fisher, is as peaceful as one imagines it would be up among those spires. No ropes, crampons or thermal clothing required here however. Just comfortable clothes and slippers plus a glass of New Zealand’s finest wine from the menu is all that is needed to prepare for an afternoon in the deep cushions of Matakauris plentiful couches, gazing at the panorama from the large picture windows. It is just as hard to leave your enormous individual guest room, too. Rooms and suites are arranged along pathways or around the pool, facing the lake and mountains. These spacious havens are so cleverly designed and beautifully decorated this writer felt compelled to take pictures for personal interior inspiration. In my dream house I would replicate such touches as the series of tall, elegant vases each filled with a single white dahlia, which line the shelf behind the oversized king size bed. The bed sits on a raised platform so the entire view can be enjoyed from the pillow, the ironing board concealed in an ingenious narrow cupboard and a generous walk-in wardrobe filled with plenty of benches and hanging space. The sunken lounge below features a fireplace, enormous mounted flat screen television and couches. A skylit bathroom with soaring ceilings also contains a bath perched beside floor-toceiling glass windows overlooking the view.

Lakeside-Reflections

Matakauri’s Owner’s Cottage is the newest section of the lodge. The fourbedroom ‘cottage’ was completed just over a year ago and as such the newest offering among all of New Zealand’s luxury retreats. Even the carpets within are a standout, designed by the costume creators for the Lord of the Rings movies. An outdoor Jacuzzi, custom-made kitchen appliances, décor and locally sourced wood and other materials complete the picture of perfection. U nique Luxur y

B

oth this retreat and the The Farm at Cape Kidnappers (below) are also the brainchilds of the former Wall Street wonder Mr Robertson. For these initial retreats, he took on board Huka Lodge interior designer, Viriginia Fisher, to work her magic, on this time, creating a chic, modern retreats with touches still harking to their heritage. Both lodges are in the sort of stunning coastal locations that are not exactly hard to come by in New Zealand, Kauri Cliffs perched above Matauri Bay and The Farm at Cape Kidnappers a little further south at Hawkes Bay. Kauri Cliffs is famous not only for luxurious suites and a main lodge surrounded by a breezy verandah perfect for al fresco dining, but also a par 72 championship golf course measuring 6510m. It has five sets of tees and 15 holes all overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Cavalli Islands. Most striking is that six of these are played alongside precipitous cliffs, a site so unique that one luxury travel

writer felt driven to describe it (in a good way) as “slightly insane”. Non-golfers need not fear as there are oodles of other opportunities to enjoy themselves here. For a start, the natural beauty sitting beyond your doorstep is a huge attraction: a short walk away is a rather famous 700-year-old kauri tree, as well as three private beaches, sand dunes and more kauri forests. Getting back to nature will give any worldweary traveller as much of a recharge as the treatments and massages offering in the on-site spa. The activity choice is as sedate as a farm tour or as adventurous as boar hunting and quad biking. Helicopter tours can be booked as well as fishing trips. The lodge also offers a glass-walled lap pool, gym and tennis courts. Alongside the main lodge are 22 rooms plus an Owner’s Cottage. Understated elegance and antiques typify the décor. Lighting your open fire in the ocean view suites it’s hard not to imagine this is heaven on earth – and not just for lovers of golf. U nique Luxur y

Championship golf course

T

he Farm at Cape Kidnappers’ is most famous not only for winning five star ways but the par 71 championship course. It is also ideally located for winery tours and quite renown for its guided tours taking guests in search of the notoriously shy Kiwi, New Zealand’s native flightless bird and national symbol. The golf course, like that at Kauri Cliffs’, also measures 6510m and was voted 22nd by leading authorities at Golf Digest. The treat for wine lovers who stay at Cape Kidnappers is that it is located in Hawkes Bay, a region renown for producing premium vintages. This lodge offers similar ocean vistas to Kauri Cliffs with one of the main differences being that its 22 rooms are located on a 6000 acre working sheep station. These suites offer every convenience imaginable from fully

196

w w w.uni quees t at es. co m. a u

stocked mini bars and heated towel racks to oversized bath tubs. Interiors are by Linda Bedell, a designer from Aspen, Colorado where she is a favoured choice of the rich and famous. Ms Bedell has transformed a once plain building into a rustic-yet-modern lodge, with places to curl up by the fire, couches covered in French-linen cushions, furniture built from distressed wood and features reminiscent of a wealthy landowner’s property, such as soaring ceilings and massive barn doors. Local art as well as reproductions of famous paintings abound. An outdoor heated pool and Jacuzzi, full service spa and fitness centre are all part of the complex, while the host of things to do include hot air ballooning and fly-fishing. The spa offers everything from manicures to a couple’s suite for massages for two.
