onleigh is a historically significant beachside mansion perfectly located in an exclusive enclave on Brighton’s Golden Mile. Designed by the architect of the Supreme Court of Victoria, A.L. Smith, in 1860 and recorded as one of Brighton’s first homes, every room has been carefully restored and enhanced with subtle contemporary features. There are two magnificent light-filled dining and living rooms on either side of large impressive entrance hall. Also on this level is a large office; a combined kitchen family room area which opens on to the gardens and an exquisitely tiled pool shaded by a rare old Chinese Ginko tree. Upstairs there are two bedroom wings, one incorporating a small kitchen, 2 bedrooms; a bathroom with its own private entry and a large covered veranda overlooking the pool and flowering gardens below. The second bedroom wing includes a large master suite with open plan en suite and dressing room beside two guest bedrooms and another bathroom. From this wing there is access to the Westerly colonnaded terrace facing the bay and a rooftop viewing deck. Wonderful features of Bonleigh include a soaring nine-metre high entry foyer; leadlight crests; classic French doors and marble fireplaces; Regency-style chandeliers; carefully sourced antique lights and fittings; a magnificent cedar staircase; remote-control architectural gates; back to base closedcircuit TV security system; hydronic heating; reverse cycle air-conditioning; three car spaces with automatic awnings; a poolside powder room and a cellar and butler’s pantry. Combined with a world class address just metres from direct beach access, private schools and nearby shops the lifestyle this location offers is second to none and an inspection of this beautiful home is highly recommended. D

ecisions. These are virtually the only part of holidaying on One&Only Hayman Island that could pose a traveller any sort of difficulty. The iconic Far North Queensland resort on which Mulpha Australia has spent the heady sum of $80 million lays out so many tempting offers in the way of room types and restaurants - let alone activities and spa treatments (there’s even a massage performed while floating in the sea) - that choosing which will fill your vacation may prove challenging. Then again, with relaxing and unwinding being the main aim of almost any holiday, taking a seat in one of the many deckchairs or hammocks surrounding Hayman’s famous pool is also an option. Lie back and tan while availing yourself of delicious food and cocktails and feel the stress melt away. One&Only is among the newest and most ground breaking luxury resort brands in the world. In just four years it has found a place among the world’s top 10 elite lodging companies thanks to its inimitable jaw-dropping aesthetics, faultless staff service and attention to detail. One feature we loved at Hayman, for instance, was that butlers provided in the high end penthouses go as far as offering guests their favourite style of pillow. There are less than a dozen One&Only’s in the world, three more currently on the drawing board, and the Hayman Island is Australia’s first. After inking the deal to take over Hayman Island early in 2013, One&Only threw open its doors mid-year. An extravagant press launch was held in July and ever since, guests from regular clientele to major celebrities have not been in short supply. One&Only has cemented its reputation for creating some of the most memorable elite holiday destinations in the world and Hayman is no exception. Queensland’s island resorts now have a higher bar than ever to match. From beach villas offering over-sized private plunge pools and ocean views from the pillows of their kingsized beds, to an array of restaurants with exquisite mouthwatering food, and attentive staff who we could not fault, Hayman Island is now one of Australia’s best answers for travellers seeking a seamless boutique lodging experience. Visitors can count on being as equally delighted with the spectacular views of turquoise and indigo sea surrounding the island as they will be by its brand new creature comforts. Décor is neutral and subdued, designed so not to detract from Hayman’s natural wonders. Judging by our experience though, most guests will be hard-pressed tearing themselves away from those glorious vistas right outside their windows. U nique Luxur y

In the beach villas, for instance, azure waters compete for attention with these rooms’ beautifully appointed interiors. As within all the new-look rooms, suites and penthouses, nothing seems to have been forgotten. Beach villas offer a walk-in wardrobe in the master bedroom, full sized tubs in bathrooms, mini bars filled with treats, flat screen tvs, and – heaven forbid - a place to do some work - if you must. Private plunge pools are among the largest of their type found in any resort, and the daybed is an ideal place to while away the hours. What’s more, these rooms are so close to the beach the water seems to lap near the door at high tide. Clever touches are One&Only hallmarks, and on Hayman the retreat rooms directly behind the beach villas are exactly that, built so that larger groups can stay in close proximity to each other if they wish. Also on this stretch of bright white sand is the freestanding Beach House, a rather exclusive offering with a huge lounge, double bedroom, private enclosed garden and outdoor pavilion for those after the ultimate seaside getaway. Hayman’s other lodging options include guest rooms, suites, and one, two and three bedroom penthouses, one of which was masterminded by renowned fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg. Most of Hayman’s rooms have sea views, others overlook the lily-filled lagoon. Love a morning swim? Choose the newly designed pool wing. Created around Hayman’s famous pool, these villas give guests direct access to its waters from their terraces. Mulpha Australia is offering a selection of exclusive Estates for purchase. This presents a unique opportunity to be part of this acclaimed Great Barrier Reef Island with the Estates situated in secluded enclaves. Estate owners and their guests will have full access to One&Only Hayman’s acclaimed resort facilities and services. The Estates are being designed by renowned international resort architect Kerry Hill, who has been credited for his work on leading brand Amanresorts. They form part of the island’s ongoing strategic plan and will set the course for the Island into the future. The decision to offer a limited number of exclusive residential properties on the island was the result of longstanding expressions of interest from Hayman guests and marks an exciting period of investment in this acclaimed Great Barrier Reef destination. Fabulous rooms aside, it is actually a combination of these and many other little touches that make this one of the most special places we have ever set foot. Staff are attentive but not overbearing, possessing a genuine we-aim-to-please attitude. A particularly marvelous feature was found on the in-room phone. A particular bugbear of this travel writer’s is digesting an in-house directory in order to dial out or have the mini-bar re-stocked. It always feels like homework. One&Only Hayman however has a one touch service button on every in-room phone. So simple, so clever. U nique Luxur y

11

12

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

Also rather clever was the Ocean Dreaming massage, one of the most inspired treatments in Hayman’s upscale spa that we found nothing short of sublime. Never did it occur to me to have a massage while lying on a plush bed floating just off the beach, yet here it is, undoubtedly one of the most tranquil, nerve-soothing ways to be pampered ever invented. Another place to have your muscles soothed apart from the treatment rooms is the rainforest, surrounded by cool greenery and bird life. Helping send guests into a state of bliss are Amala natural products, concentrated blends of organic plant nutrients with aromas used throughout the spa. Being figure conscious, we also truly enjoyed discovering the latest exercise equipment in the state-of-the-art gym. It was no surprise to find it was designed with input from celebrity trainer James Duigan, sculptor of such heavenly creatures as Elle MacPherson and Rose Huntington-Whitely. If your aim is to rejuvenate your body as well as your tan an attentive team of coaches is on hand with all sorts of ways to motivate you

into new habits. Yet if that’s going a little too far, fitness classes include beach bootcamp to yoga and dynamic pilates, or guests can opt for Duigan’s Clean&Lean menu during their stay. Chances are that most health conscious guests will avail themselves of one of these fitness options, as the seven restaurants on the island are full of temptations. Yes healthy food is served in abundance, but there is always something decadent nearby, like berries alongside mascarpone cheese, or steamed fish on a menu that also lists beef cheeks in rich red curry sauce. Deciding what to eat next became almost sport, a big part of our daily fun choosing from Italian, or seafood, or delicate pizzas, or a poolside meal. Anyone who takes their food seriously will find themselves in a heightened culinary heaven. We drank in the view along with our coffee at the breakfast buffet served in the Pacific restaurant, dined on spicey morsels at Asian eatery Bamboo and drank cocktails by Hayman’s elegant poolside bar. We felt like rock stars. At night staff lit the torches around the pool and combined with live music and a balmy evening it could not have been more perfect.

his uniquely stunning home is like no other in the hills behind Byron Bay. Awarded Best Property Australia in the 2009 CNBC International Property Awards and receiving a 2008 award from the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Country Division, the home is an outstanding example of a perfect balance between form and function. Poised on a ‘green field’ site, the home captures some of the most breathtaking Byron hinterland valley views. Set on 10.39ha (25.67 acres) near the village of Federal, Amileka is only 20 minutes from Byron Bay. Aside from the original three-bedroom farmhouse with its own swimming pool and some dairy bails perfect as an artist’s studio, the main house is definitely the star attraction. Designed without compromise with robust innovative industrial and commercial detailing, Amileka retains comfort and luxury. The indoor and outdoor spaces connect seamlessly. Large expansive living areas take in the valley views and overlook the 18m x 5m fully tiled in-ground pool. There is an open fire, a sunken lounge and a fantastic indoor outdoor entertaining area with built-in BBQ. There is also a fire pit in the northern lawn overlooking the pool. The kitchen is divided into two sections and one is minimalist and sleek and melds perfectly into the living areas. There are five bedrooms with one that could be used as an office. The master bedroom has a sunken tub, expansive wet area, two shower heads and amazing views.

as it, as The London Times newspaper suggested, Italy’s triple dip recession that prompted Prada to explore themes of rich versus poor in its latest collection? Or was it Miuccia Prada’s very personal quest to answer her own questions around the issue of what constitutes beauty? Whatever the inspiration, when Prada took to the lilac-coloured sand dune-surrounded catwalk to introduce its spring summer 2015 collection, it made it clear next summer would all be about topstitching and 70s denim. While this was clearly a summer offering, coats of all persuasions, whether A-line with three quarter sleeves or belted coatdresses, also featured heavily.

Many garments displayed that pieced together look as patchworked dresses and skirts - complete with raw frayed edging – were held together by leather and brocade. Fabric-wise, denim featured heavily across dresses and pants while 70s-influenced full leather skirts also cemented their place. While this season may all have been about raw cotton and scrapes of brocade, having recently announced the acquisition of a historic tannery Tannerie Mégisserie Hervy near the French city of Limoges to add to its production facilities, we can surely look forward to leather making a more dominant return in the label’s future offerings.

Paul Smith K

nown for his idiosyncratic take on traditional British styling, Sir Paul Smith is a designer who manages to combine a sense of humour with a genuine love of tradition and the classics.

In a bid to appease the purists who rely on the traditional aesthetic, the popular Paul Smith stripes have been reinterpreted this season, running across silk separates and down loose cut suit jackets.

Having now clocked up around 40 years at the helm of his eponymous label, the Paul Smith spring summer 2015 collection offers both old and new lovers of the label an honest and effortless way of dressing.

Likewise, texture also features predominantly with convention in the label’s staple items subverted through pieces featuring contrasting cloth types patch-worked together.

Taking its cue from the masculine lines where Smith first cemented his reputation, the palette shown on the runway was subtle, dominated by light blue hues, off-whites and taupes offset by bursts of khaki, navy and black.

In a nod to his well-documented sense of fun, fabrics take on a life of their own with rough linen sitting alongside smooth satin and twill cotton punctuated with panels of sheer silk.

t may only be Jason Wu’s second runway collection for Boss Women, the womenswear arm of celebrated menswear label Hugo Boss, but already the Taiwanese artistic director is making his presence felt. In remaining true to the Boss essence by using men’s suiting and shirting as its backbone, the brand’s spring summer ready to wear collection seeks to define his stated ambition to refine the house’s new womenswear signature by exploring lightness and fluidity. Inspired by the work of artist Agnes Martin, the colour palette is a refreshing change from many of the darker tones seen so far this

season with celery, cement and glass featuring prominently among monochromatic black and white tones. An essential element to the structure of the garment, Wu uses seams themselves as a form of decoration while crisp white tuxedo shirts are repurposed into shirtwaist dressed or paired with embellished skirts for a more formal proposal. The fabrics for the collection - tweeds, bonded jersey and leather - are structured yet contrast with the fragile offerings of nylon tulle and organza ribbon dotted throughout the range.

ocated just 15 minutes from the beaches in Byron Bay and seven minutes to beautiful Bangalow on a leafy country road in the sought after hamlet of Possum Creek, this wonderful property oozes character and charm. A rare opportunity now exists to acquire a piece of local history. Run as a school from 1911 until 1961, the old school house had been converted and, until recently, run as the wonderfully popular Liliana’s Cafe and Gallery; attracting locals and visitors in their droves to enjoy perfectly prepared local produce. Approved for five-day trading, with 30 seats and over 184 sqm of roofed area, this building would also make a great training facility, yoga space or gallery. Or, it could easily be converted back to additional accommodation (STCA). The main house, built by the current owners sits perched on a leafy ridge overlooking Possum Creek below. It features four bedrooms (or three plus study) and a large yet cosy lounge with separate kitchen dining area opening onto shaded verandas that make for seamless indoor-outdoor entertaining and of course relaxing! Downstairs there is a large laundry, ample storage, a media room or possible additional training space and a large four-car lock-up garage. Across the lawn is a very sweet one-bedroom guest cottage over two levels - also overlooking Possum Creek. Having poured several years of labour and love into this wonderful property the owners are looking to relocate to Brisbane to enjoy their grand children. Liliana’s would have to be one of the most beautifully presented properties in the area, it awaits your inspection and is looking for an owner ready to put their own touch on the place whilst adding to its long and colourful history.

I

n recent times the world has awoken to Canberra as a formidable player on the Australian and international culinary scene: In February Huon Hooke gave his nod to the quality and value of the region’s wines. In May the New York Times sang its virtues and soon after that, the OECD proclaimed it the most livable city in the world. If Canberra’s new found food scene isn’t a surprise, what will floor any foodie is that Canberra is the perfect place for growing truffles. The locally-grown aromatic fungi have been stuffed into the customs-immune pouches of French diplomats for a few years now and for that reason alone, Australia should be seriously reconsidering our national capital once thought food humdrum. The same goes for Bentley. Around a decade ago the luxury car maker shrugged the yoke of Rolls Royce’s ownership off its shoulders and since separation it has flourished. It’s revamped its range, won at Le Mans, set the odd world speed record and generally re-injected the seriously cool attitude that the brand was born with in the 1920s. The 2014 Mulsanne is the next step in the brand’s resurgence and as Bentley’s flagship car it’s big, very luxurious and suitably priced. With a blistering array of options, the model that Unique Luxury drove out of Bentley’s Sydney showroom totalled $870,000. Needless to say, this is no ordinary car and for that reason alone, you couldn’t think of a better vehicle to hunt for what is certainly no ordinary mushroom. A truffle’s ability to turn a pedestrian mashed potato, pasta or plate of eggs into a dish that will weaken the knees of grown men and women sets it above all others and is the reason why it fetches equally extraordinary prices of up $2500/kilo.

The Mulsanne does the same for the relatively pedestrian Sydney Canberra drive, or any drive for that matter. There are few places that are as nice to be in with its hand stitched upholstery, in-built seat air conditioning and massagers as well as exquisite wood panelling. It’s twin turbo charged 6.75l V8 engine won’t take you to the moon, but it will take this near 3-tonne beast from 0-100 in 5.1 seconds, which is quicker than many sports cars. And, just in

Truffle hunting in Canberra

Earth exotics: The best truffles can command $2500/kg

case you meet a Rolls Royce’s new flagship Phantom at the lights, you’ll beat that too. At the turn of last century, when Australia’s founding father’s were quibbling over whether Melbourne or Sydney was to be the nation’s capital, the compromise they came to was an arbitrary point on the map halfway between the two that became Canberra, which rather auspiciously is actually perfect for growing black French truffles. Canberra’s hot summers, cold winters, big temperature swings and granite soils mimic the south of France where truffles thrive; or least they used to. Urban encroachment and acid rain have dramatically decreased France’s truffle output which, in part, has led to the hunt for other places to grow the enigmatic ingredient. In 2004 Sherry McArdle-English planted her first truffle spore-infused oak seedling and since then another 30 farms have joined her. Today they collectively export to France, the US and Asia as well as feeding the capital’s burgeoning truffle appetite. Sherry’s 2500 oak tree farm is only 15 minutes from Parliament House and it’s one of the few that will let members of the public join her during truffle season between late June to August. While the French have relied on pigs to sniff out the aromatic lumps which grow only under oak trees, Australia’s are done by dogs and you’ve never

seen happier ones. It’s all excited snuffling, wagging tails and “good boys!” as they race from tree to tree. Sherry’s hound Snuffles was joined by a black labrador Samson and his owner Jayson who’s day job is to train the Customs dogs. But come truffle season, he takes his holidays to hunt truffles. Samson is so good at it to that Jayson’s been offered $80,000 for him. His answer? “No deal,” Jayson replies cracking into smile that says this dog is family. Once the dog finds a truffle you take a trowel and dig archeologiststyle so as not to damage the tender fungi and voila! The most unassuming, yet valuable, lump of dirt you’re ever likely to see. Within 30 minutes, five are found which when weighed came to around $450.

It’s like an Easter Egg for grown-ups for anyone with a taste for them is a great thing to do. If you’ve never tasted a truffle before, while they’re not immediately appealing, they are strangely seductive, so much so they were once banned by the church describing it as the embodiment of evil until the peasantry of the French Revolution quite sensibly threw that rule out. They declared it “the most delicious of foodstuffs,” and set aside one day of the year to celebrate its virtues. From there and just like Snuffles and Samson, we’re off in the Mulsanne on a mission to uncover the good and delicious of Canberra and its surrounds. They are definitely there with creative and clever chefs and food and wine producers seemingly mushrooming overnight. The key is getting in the car to find them, which the Mulsanne did with aplomb. Bentley’s premier car isn’t an immediate head turner because it doesn’t want to be. It’s made to be discrete. It’s big front end and slouched haunches look something akin to a giant cat ready to pounce. Which is what it does the moment you put your foot down. This is one vehicle you wouldn’t want to mess with. Its dominance on any road is a given and while few cars can lay rightful claim to that, the Mulsanne can.

It’s hard to fault a car of the Mulsanne’s calibre

100

w w w.uni quees t at es. co m. a u

Unsurprisingly, it’s hard to fault a car of this calibre, nor to beat it for cache. It even made Canberra’s disorienting array roundabouts bearable. Thanks to German engineering (Bentley is now happily under the Volkswagen umbrella along with Buggati, Porsche, Audi and Ducati) the big Brit stuck to our capital’s tangle of cambers and curves like nobody ever read it the laws of physics. At more than 5.5m long it’s a full half metre longer than the biggest Mercedes, the CL class, and is about 30cm wider. It all amounts to a broadside across the bows of the motoring world. Bentley is back and is all the better for shrugging Rolls Royce’s shackles just as Canberra takes its rightful place as a culinary leader with a diverse and thriving food scene, both are worth going back to.

David Brabham, Jack Brabham’s son in his Bentley GT3

I

’ve done them all: Formula 1s, Indycars, WRC and even the big overseas motor shows and, as is the lot of a motoring writer, I’ve been in the finest corporate boxes and had the best seats. And while I’m not complaining, the unavoidable truth is that class takes a back seat when speed and trophies are at stake. It’s like going to the rugby league and expecting a chamber orchestra. You are not going to get it. Except if you go to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In the pantheon of motorsport, nothing else can quite pull off the aplomb of Britain’s premier high-octane event. Picture one of the finest estates in England with the best and quickest cars and motorbikes in existence belting around a Lord’s 400-year-old manor while you lord about yourself sipping champagne and eating lobster tails while watching the show. Forget Days of Thunder and hot asphalt and think more Chariots of Fire just much, much faster. There is no other place in world where you can see a 1906 Renault Type K all the way up to the latest WRC cars tear up the same track, or see how an Ayrton Senna Lotus-Renault’s 97T goes against a Michael Schumacher Benetton B191 under real race conditions. It is the ultimate homage to humanity’s love affair with driving done in a very civilised way. Goodwood has always had a thing for cars. After being requisitioned as an RAF base for the Battle of Britain, it became a post-war racing hub with people including Jack Brabham racing here before safety standards shut operations around 1965. Then, at the end of the ’60s, the 17-year-old heir to Goodwood, Charles Gordon-Lennox, the current Earl of March, took his mother’s MG 1100 belting around the estate’s private roads to deposit it straight into a tree and thus began forging the lifestyle of fast-living aristocrat of the first class. Today his love of speed has crystallised into Goodwood. In 1993, at age 38, the savvy aristocrat pulled together his fast-driving friends to test

them on one of estate’s lanes that, as a teen, he’d fling the family’s car collection down. Thirty thousand paying members of the public came to see that spectacle making the Earl a tidy profit and since then Goodwood has become a blistering success. Today it’s a three-day affair with one of the best vintage car auctions in England, lawns filled with priceless vehicles, aircraft overhead and almost every prestige brand possible displaying their munificence to the wealthy who’s helicopters and chauffeured cars fill the parking lot as well as 150,000 adoring members of the public. Goodwood’s magic lies in the fact that its implacable sense of Britishness remains. Marshals in bowlers hats shepherd limousines and fans with a decency and authority that a day worker in day-glo vest could never earn. These people work at Goodwood full time, and whenever one of the Earl’s events are on (the Festival of Speed, has produced Goodwood Revival which focuses only on vintage cars as well as horserace meets at his private racetrack) they’re pulled in from the garden or other duties to pitch in, and it shows. They’re relaxed yet have a sense of ownership that many a corporate organisation could only hope to inveigh. It practically feels like the good Earl is letting you into his house. Well, almost. Aside from the main part of the manor with Goodwood’s giant iconic racing statute in front which remains off limits unless you’re a personal guest of the Earl, pretty much everything else in this modern day Downton Abbey is open to discover with hundreds of the most legendary, most outlandish and most beautiful cars you will ever see together under the shadows of Goodwood’s ancient trees. Being a car nut isn’t a prerequisite to falling in love with any number of cars here. This year the stables were filled with Maseratis and I’ve never seen a machine turn heads of usually disinterested women like the drop dead cute 1947 Maserati A6 that Argentinian Eva Peron U nique Luxur y

would dash around the Amalfi coast in. Rows of the Batmobileesque Jaguar D-Type racers turned men into boys and you could see boys running their hands along the latest luxury models of their dreams pretending they were theirs. It’s also different to most car shows where prestige brands are usually the minority. At Goodwood it’s pretty much wall-to-wall top end. Ferrari, Lotus, Aston Martin, Abarth, Buggati, Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Porsche along with every luxury and large car maker worth their salt showing off their latest to adoring crowds sipping Pimms and going happily pink in the English Summer sun. Keen to align themselves with its cache, premium badges are increasingly launching new models here too. McLaren track tested its wickedly nimble 333km/h 650S the mainstay of it’s racing platform when Unique Luxury was there earlier this year as guests of Bentley. The aristocratic Bentley brand had a couple of surprises of their own too. Recent years has seen real resurgence back to the origins of the badge whose original intention was to make big, fast cars that were simply too good for the chauffeur to drive. It was at Goodwood where it launched its new 300km/h+ Continental GT V8 S. As it whizzed by the Bentley marquee, all within her couldn’t help let out a spontaneous “Huzzar!” of approval. It’s a magnificent beast, with a massive V8, 521 hp engine, impeccable styling and seemingly physics-defying engineering to make this 2-tonne plus creature eat corners for breakfast and accelerate off the mark faster than cars half its size. It’s yours for around $500,000. Part of the brand’s new fortunes is that a decade ago it threw it’s hat back into the racing ring and as soon as it did, won first and second place at Le Mans in 2003 – it’s first win there since they dominated Le Mans in the late 1920s. One of those drivers was youngest son of Jack Brabham, David. I met him wandering around the marshalling yards at the back of the manor as he waited for his turn on the hill climb in his Bentley GT3. Usually fans are kept away from drivers by overly officious security but at Goodwood the rules are a little more civilised. Here you see some of the most famous drivers in the world wandering amongst the crowd. “It’s a really special event, much more relaxed and it gives the drivers and fans the chance to meet,” he told us. Brabham said it’s a real drawcard for the drivers. He appeared right. Back at the marquee I almost dropped my canapé reading the astonishing drivers list. I counted at least six F1 title winners including Jenson Button, Damon Hill, Kimi Raikkonen and even legendary Jackie Stewart. There were at least four Le Mans 24 Hours winners, the most successful driver in WRC history Sébastien Loeb, Richard Petty - the most successful NASCAR racer in history and Australian motorcycle supremo Wayne Gardner along with the most successful motorcycle rider in history, 15-time motorcycle grand prix world champion Giacomo Agostini amongst the hundreds of other drivers that come to Goodwood for the chance to do the lauded hillclimb. It’s the foundation of the Festival of Speed – a near 2km solo belt up the same country road from 1993 and the entry criteria is deliciously simple: in the tradition of that first Festival of Speed if you have a fast enough, or historically significant car and are willing to risk it against the road’s flint walls then you’re eligible. It’s not technical but it’s tight, tricky and very quick. The last time the record was broken was in 1999 when the legendary McLaren MP4/13 Formula One (that helped Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard dominate the 1998 season) set a face-bendingly quick 41.6 seconds - a 160km/h average. Get yourself in one of the big name marquees and you’ll have a front seat near the starting line. As a mark of respect the order is decided by age. One of the first was the 1906 Renault which could hardly muster a trot. U nique Luxur y

But the magnificent point is that it’s a more than 100-year-old living race car instead of a static museum piece. For that alone the suited and race-day dressed Bentley throng along with our neighbours Rolls Royce, Ferrari and Mercedes let out a collective cheer for the old iron horse. Throughout the day, in between champagne and silver service food, a cavalcade of cars and motorbikes from every age flogged themselves up the course. The juggernaut Great Gatsby-like Bentley’s of the 1920s, the legendary Maserati f 250s of the 1950s as well as the great Formula 1’s, Ferraris, Mini Coopers, Ford Escorts right up to the current Formula 1’s, GTs and super cars all risking life, limb and panel work on the climb. The first Goodwood had a fatality here, the Earl’s brother died on it and plenty of others have suffered at the hands of its unforgiving corners. One Audi we saw clipped a flint wall on an inside corner completely losing one side of its front end. Ouch. Not the face-bendingly quick Loeb in his Peugeot though. Despite being tipped to beat the McLaren record, Loeb fell short of it with a still respectable 44 seconds and the fastest time of 2014. That’s an average speed of more than 150km/h down a track that a times looked like a shopping trolley would struggle sideways down it. It’s that racing challenge and the chance to drive great and historic cars that attracts the drivers. One was Jack Brabham who was a regular here in his later years. Sir Jack had died only weeks earlier and, aware of “How much Dad loved racing here,” son David and the Earl organised their own Goodwood twist on a minute of silence - a minute of noise. Late in the afternoon every car that could red-lined their engines for a solid minute in a storm of noise that you you’d expect to hear in heaven. It was a touching, yet deafening tribute to the fellow. My ears shall always ring when I remember it. Goodwood’s tagged as the “world’s fastest garden party” its certainly the most civilised outing that motoring can muster. Our tip is start working on your prestige car dealer for a ticket for 2015. You’ll be happy you did.

The density is greater than what is now allowed and the inclusion of 21 off street car spaces also adds substantial value to the site. The timing of the approvals means that there is approximately $300,000 of contributions savings. This property has the added advantage of the approved designs being environmentally sustainable due to initiatives that have been incorporated. These include enormous underground rainwater tanks as well as a solar electric collection system which will feed into the grid and offset power consumed by the building at night. Other

There’s a little bit of magic that happens every time John Calleija opens his sketchbook. But were it not for his proactive mother and a little aluminum boat, the work of one of the world’s truly great artisans may never have been seen at all, as Tracey Porter discovers.

A

uthenticity is an important word to jeweller John Calleija. It is at the crux of all that he is and everything that he does – for without it both the man and his measure would lose much of their shine. But the sparkle is there for all to see, either via the brilliance of his raw product, in the satisfied glint of his clientele’s eyes or via his contented 40-strong workforce located across stores in the Gold Coast, Sydney and London. It seems not even the fact it’s proved an extraordinarily expensive month for the 51-year-old father of one, can diminish its glow. It started off as this time of year usually does with Calleija’s attendance at the invitation-only Argyle Tender – this year taking the form of a rolling international road show - where a select group of elite ateliers and jewellers were escorted on a world tour before competing by secret ballot to secure the most unique of nature’s treasures, a select number of Argyle Pink Diamonds. Currently just one percent of the 600 million stones produced from the Argyle Mine in the East Kimberley region are pink however with the West Australian mine due to cease production within the next six years, competition to secure the diamonds is immense. Having identified his favourites on the Sydney leg of the tour in early August, Gold Coast-based Calleija faced an anxious two-month wait before learning his bid on two pieces had been successful. He parted with $1.05 million to secure the first, with the exquisite purple pink 1.13-carat heart shaped diamond garnering the most bids of all 54 precious gems up for offer. The second stone, an equally impressive intense purple pink 1.64-carat oval Argyle diamond, made its way into the Calleija collection with a winning bid of $1.75 million. “The two pink diamonds will be made into two really exquisite pieces. We haven’t released them for sale at this point. But they’re very, very, very special – they’re two very rare, very beautiful diamonds, one of them received the highest amount of bids of any diamond in the Argyle tender. How are they stored? Offsite, I think I should just say, they’re offsite.” The win was celebrated in typically reserved Calleija style where he credited the success to the hard work of his staff via a champagne toast before heading back to the workroom to continue fine-tuning the other project demanding his immediate attention – the little matter of the world’s most expensive hat. The $3 million headpiece, jointly created by Calleija and milliner Natalie Bikicki for the AAMI Victoria Derby Day Races, involved 80 hours of sketching and two months of actual creation by six of Calleija’s elite Master Jewellers before the final product was created utilising over 55 carats of spectacular Green Beryl gems and 1264 White Diamonds — in particular the 3, 4 and 5 carat D-coloured jewels that make the centrepiece — the highest quality White Diamonds possible. U nique Luxur y

It was a fitting conclusion to the growing list of the world’s most expensive items created by Calleija and his team, the likes of which include the world’s most expensive champagne glasses made from 1600 pink diamonds and platinum to the value of $500,000 and an incredibly beautiful belly button ring featuring a two-carat diamond. However it says much of his talent to surprise that the son of a Maltese father and Italian mother was never identified as a man likely to pursue a career in the creative arts. Calleija says he has always been a firm believer in the old adage good things come to those who wait, but concedes he waited a little longer than everyone anticipated in settling on a future career path following the conclusion of his HSC. In the end it was his mum who jolted the then 18-year-old into action. “My mum said to me ‘John what are you going to do with your life, are you going to go to uni or are you going to look for a job?’ By chance there was an advertisement on TV at the exact same time for a jewellery business and having always been fascinated with diamonds and precious jewels, I thought it looked pretty good. I’ve always loved the water so I went out in my tinny for the afternoon and by the time I’d come back mum had arranged an interview with a jeweller. “But the funny thing was I’d been training for all it all my life without knowing it. I used to sketch, I used to draw a lot, I used to make little models, I used to make things out of wood and metal and didn’t realise I had that dexterity. None of my schooling really picked up on that. They told me that I would never be any good at art or anything to do with creativity. I am 51-years-old, I’ve been a jeweller for 33 years now and every single day I draw and create, so it just shows you’ve got to go with your instinct.” That belief in his inner voice proved well founded when he was awarded the highly sought after De Beers’ prestigious diamond design award during the change of the millennium. At the time it was the high point of a career that had begun less than 20 years earlier. Having been given his start as an apprentice jeweller in 1982, Calleija bought his employer’s business just three short years later. In 1991 the Sydney boy moved to Queensland in search of a new challenge and began manufacturing jewellery out of his Gold Coast home. Some lean years followed but a firm belief in fate, together with that old friend instinct, meant a successful payday was never too far away. “The feeling I got when I made my first ring has never left me - that I would make something and put it out there and that somebody would like it enough to buy it. When I opened the store at Sanctuary Cove over 20 years ago and spent months and months prior to that making a piece of jewellery and then you think ‘well, what if no one likes it?’ And then you put it in the window and someone comes along and likes it, it gives you such a buzz and I remember that feeling.” Set to celebrate its 30th anniversary in December, but for a few more products in the offering, a few more celebrity endorsements, a few more commercial relationships and a lot more media attention, the business essentially remains just as it was when the young Calleija first took over the reins with all product still made and designed in-house. With no definitive customer target – “We made a beautiful baby bracelet for Zara Phillips’ little baby the other day and then we made a piece for a lovely lady who had just celebrated her 100th birthday” – Calleija says currently around 50 percent of the business done by his company is for bespoke commissions while the remainder is limited edition collections. “We’re not a mass-produced brand with the same items in each boutique. My creations all come from the heart, meaning I’ve got a beautiful jewel here today, I’m going to create it into a unique one-off piece, and that’s in that store. We have three different boutiques and you won’t see the same thing. We do make limited editions of certain pieces that we just love but the majority are unique.” U nique Luxur y

157

Argyle Pink and White Diamond Bracelet (above) Argyle Pink Diamond Marquise Ring (below) Argyle Cascade Earrings (above) Calleija boasts the distinctive honour of being an Argyle Select Atelier, enabling him to sell Australia’s most prized jewel, the highly collectible pink diamond.

“But that’s the way I like it and why I could never grow any bigger because the joy would start to leave.” Calleija says while many of his clients do their homework prior to commissioning a bespoke piece and are usually all too aware of Calleija’s strong stance on ensuring all gems are ethically sourced and have not hurt or hindered “any people, place or animal”, most come in search of an emotional connection to their piece of choice. He says the best response he ever received by a client on being presented with their Calleija piece was a young male who had selected a ring for his partner. “It was less than a year ago and it wasn’t the most valuable piece that was ever made, it wasn’t the least valuable it was just something that was really special to them. When we opened the box she burst into tears and they were the good tears, the happy tears and it just meant so much to her. “One of our clients, a different client, said to me that when he placed one of our rings on his wife’s finger, they’d been married for like 30 years, he said ‘I can only tell her how much I love her when I tell her but the ring reminds her every day’. I thought that was beautiful. It’s all in the eyes, you see. When you open the box and it’s one of your creations their eyes just light up, like that lady who cried, the emotion is there. They all react differently to it, some have tears of joy others just react with their eyes – that’s the part that it’s all about. And I get to do that every day. Yes I am lucky, and so are my staff, they’re getting that same joy that I’m getting.

THE SKY'S NO LIMIT In April international media were flown to Abu Dhabi for the unveiling of the most luxurious airline cabins ever created. Unique Luxury’s BRONWEN GORA witnessed first hand the new way Etihad Airways passengers will take to the skies from this month.

I

f you had the chance to design your very own business and first class airline seat what would you do? This is the question Etihad Airways’ executives asked not only themselves and the finest minds in design and engineering, but also the people who matter: frequent travellers. This is one of the major reasons business and first class travellers who buy tickets with Etihad will soon be able to sleep side by side if they wish, relax on board in roomy private studios larger than most first class airline areas, and enjoy what this writer found the most practical, functional workspace and dining table ever designed for business class plane passengers. Apartments – yes multi-area apartments – are also being introduced on Etihad’s planes, along with meeting areas and sliding doors. Most importantly, the beds promise to be some of the most comfortable in the sky. Etihad Airways built its reputation on delivering exceptional service and facilities. This year it raised its own bar going far beyond anything any airline had ever done with upscale cabins. While the world’s leading carriers aimed to stay one or two steps ahead of each other, Etihad kept quiet for five years exhaustively researching its redesign. It then unveiled in April a range of cabin configurations the likes of which had never been seen before. This floored the aviation industry mainly because Etihad had ventured into unexplored territory: its new business and first class cabins are more like hotel rooms than seating areas. Starting at the top, The Residence is the First Class premiere product, a three room apartment with a shower in the bathroom, a double bed and at the opposite end a lounge with a flat screen tv. The Savoy who is at your beck and call. Pricing is still to be set in stone, but in December $20,000 will buy an Abu DhabiLondon ticket in this elite area. It will only be fitted on A380s and available in Australia by June next year. When taken into consideration that it would cost $100,000 to charter a private jet to fly the same route, it is obvious there is indeed much method to madness. The First Apartment is quite different but no less luxurious. This upscale cabin is upholstered in what many hail as the world’s best leather – Poltrona Frau – has an ottoman that folds out into an 81-inch long bed plus a large comfortable armchair. Should you need to shower a First Apartment passenger need only check with cabin crew to book the First Class shower. They can then groom themselves back in their apartment thanks to the mirrored vanity cabinet and fetch a refreshment from the chilled drinks fridge. There is even a rather exquisite circular lounge room, and if travelling with another the apartments can be joined. The First Suite is also a luxurious yet simpler option. It functions more as a meeting room than a living space, its huge leather seat in an area large enough for another passenger to come inside for a chat. It has a wardrobe, drinks cabinet and decorative fretwork sliding doors for absolute privacy. This will be available on Etihad’s B787, A330, A340 and B777 aircraft. Business travellers have a whole new world in the sky to look forward to as well. The enticing Business Studio which will be fitted on the A380 and B787, has what Etihad Airways hopes will The First Apartment

attract the lion’s share of customers: a seat which when converted into its flat bed is almost 12 inches longer than any other business class bed. This is also where Etihad has fitted the most fuss-free table thus far. Unique Luxury was shown a model of this during a special viewing of the entire business and first class cabins in Abu Dhabi in April and found it quite ingenious. Somehow, there is enough space around the seat so that when the meal arrives mid-way through that important document you’re typing, the laptop and other paraphernalia can be whisked aside and onto the perfect-sized spot. In-flight butlers trained at The Savoy

Aisle access is important to virtually every passenger, and Etihad already excels in this area, with aisle-access from all business class seats Etihad’s A330, A340 and B777 Business class will now also offer completely flat beds. Last but not least, the back of the cabin was not ignored. Etihad has, as with its luxury product, leapfrogged other airlines with all sorts of ingenious designs to make “sitting up the back” as pleasant as possible. Unique Luxury loved the little hook on the back of the seat in front, so handy for bags, toiletries, scarves, anything. The headrest has a fixed wing on one side and – just like in business and first – economy passengers will be able to adjust their lumbar support. If there really were such a thing as castles in the air, Etihad’s new look cabins would fit the bill nicely.
