We sharpened its teeth. And yes, it bites. The new 911 Carrera GTS. GTS. Meaning: purism aplenty without any sacrifice. Three letters, combining high race track performance with high everyday sportiness. With more power, solid roadholding and a sharpened design. That’s all that matters. Everything else? Irrelevant.

H

er name is unknown to many. Yet Karin Lynggaard might yet be the best thing ever to have emerged out of the Copenhagen design scene.

For it was Karin who after first laying eyes on him in Paris, the city of love, had the good sense to marry a talented young goldsmith who went by the name Ole. It was she who cleverly produced two offspring who committed themselves to the family business later choosing life partners also involved in the process of jewellery production. Michel, Charlotte, Ole and Søren

And it is her whose imprint can be seen on every timeless piece released by the popular Danish brand after faithfully serving as her husband’s muse for more than half a century. Says Ole: “I created my first snake-piece in 1969 - a bracelet for Karin. It later served as an inspiration for our 50th anniversary collection, the Snakes Collection, launched in 2013. Karin has always been a great support for the company and has been a great inspiration in my work.” Today the jeweller of choice to the Danish monarchy, its highprofile members including of course Australia’s own Crown Princess Mary, Ole Lynggaard first launched his eponymous label in 1963 after extensive travels across Europe and the US failed to unearth any goldsmiths producing fine jewellery that was wearable on its own but flexible enough to be matched with others. “Before I founded my company, I travelled the world and returned to Copenhagen… full of new ideas and inspiration. I spent one year in Schwäbisch Gmünd, two years at Place Vendome in Paris and one year in New York working for jewellers, and from there I sailed off to the Middle East where I spent one year travelling around.” Lynggaard’s very first commercial collection was an exclusive gold range with pearls and turquoise inspired by the many impressions and colours that he had experienced on his travels. Nature’s many elements continue to be a source of key inspiration for Lynggaard whose current core collections include Sweet and Dew Drops, Lotus, Snakes, Nature, Leaves and Winter Frost. Boasting a philosophy that jewellery should be worn “for everyday and not just for special occasions”, mid level price points for the label range from around $265 for a couture sewn silk bracelet - designed to be customised from a wide range of handcrafted charms in 18kt gold that retail for around $1595 apiece. U nique Luxur y

9

10

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

However the label has recently introduced a new accessible entrylevel collection called Forest, starting from $335, that features an exquisite selection of signature handcrafted designs in silver and gold. While Lynggaard’s materials of choice are gold, precious stones, diamonds and oxidized silver, efforts to further distance himself from the proliferation of luxury jewellery labels on the world stage have seen Lynggaard develop a unique technique where he take 18kt gold and manipulates it with a handcrafted technique to add a textured modern finish to the appearance. The label’s Australian representative Susanna Carter says as the brand uses only the highest quality gemstones, it can sometimes prove a challenge to source the best rare stones. “For example, our coral comes from Sicily where trained coral divers can only visit at certain times. Coral is an exceptionally rare natural stone that is limited in quantity and size. Corals are fished at 80-600m, pink coral even deeper. Corals from these depths have a stronger stone structure due to the atmospheric pressure, so they don’t easily crack when they reach the surface. “Corals are only harvested two times a year due to their very slow growth - one cm per year - and they are therefore very limited in stock. We don’t dye our corals, and only work with corals of natural colour and it is of greatest importance to us that their colour is even.” Most of the jewellery produced by the label is manufactured at the company workshop north of Copenhagen, in the same area where Ole Lynggaard opened his original studio.
Over the past 52 years, the workshop has been extended to accommodate the brand’s growing success while also ensuring its 45 goldsmiths and 60-plus remaining design and production employees are able to work under the same roof to allow for full creative control. Keeping his friends close and his family closer has always been important to Lynggaard and so he was naturally thrilled when

his eponymous label turned into a family business after daughter Charlotte joined the company in the late 1980s. Little did he know it was the start of a trend. Having begun her working life at a Parisian PR agency specialising in jewellery brands, Charlotte studied her goldsmith apprenticeship before joining the company in 1987 as designer and creative director. Her brother Soren followed not long after. Soren completed a short-lived stint in Australia working as a farmer before studying economics and marketing and joined his father’s company as production manager in 1994. Today, Charlotte’s husband Michel is the label’s chief commercial director while Soren’s wife Hanna is retail manager. However it was the addition of another family, a royal one, which really put the brand on the map. “The label has served the Royal family for more than 20 years and in 2008 was appointed Purveyor of The Royal Danish Court. The Royal Warrant indicates the company’s superior performance in the Scandinavian jewellery market,” says Carter. This unique association, combined with the efforts of former and current brand ambassadors Helena Christensen, actress Connie Nelson, Aqua lead singer Lene Nystrom and Swedish model Mona Johannesson have ensured the brand is regularly sought out by its discerning customers. And there are new ones every day. Currently sold across 25 countries, the Ole Lynggaard label opened its first flagship store outside of Scandinavia in 2013, when Crown Princess Mary helped the brand celebrate its 50th year in business by officially opening the doors to a retail spot in Sydney’s Market Street, joining the brand’s other flagships in Copenhagen and Stockholm. In addition it has a booming wholesale business, being stocked across 300 high-end jewellery retailers globally including 20 across Australia and New Zealand. U nique Luxur y

While the impact of a slowing global economy has been felt by many in the luxury fashion sector, Ole Lynggaard’s chief commercial officer Michel Normann says its effects have had little effect on his company which has recently launched a new website, added heightened social media activity and is actively targeting new markets. Normann says choosing not to compromise on design, quality or concepts means the brand offers consistency to its client base. “We do not differ from place to place or adjust to individual taste and tendencies. Being an international luxury brand… requires uniqueness and the highest quality in all aspects of our business and company. “A slowing national or international economy has thus little impact on brands [such as ours]. On the contrary people look for real quality and uniqueness in times of a slow economy while the mainstream and in between brands have a greater possibility of suffering.” In fact rather than maintain the status quo, Normann says the current vision for the brand is to forge new international retail and wholesale partnerships. “This is where we focus and this is where we want to build our strength with new openings and a focus on our 300 partner concept stores. At a later stage and when we feel ready focus might include parts of Asia and the Americas.” STOCKISTS: 1800 765 336 Charlotte Lynggaard painting

Lovingly restored Set on 2 acres of country gardens Enormous fireplace Large wood burning agar Old dairy beautifully converted to accommodate large groups or parties Less than 50 metres from Fish River Less than 2.5 hours from Sydney CBD

B

uilt in 1860 by Richard Mutton for the Webb family, Mutton Falls was originally used as a farmhouse and dairy and has a wonderfully colourful history. One of its original residents was Anne Webb (sister of Richard Mutton) who raised her 5 children there and managed a general store on the main route to Bathurst. Their rural store was unsuccessfully held up on more than one occasion including in 1867 when bushrangers Larry Cummins and John Foran got more than they bargained for from the resourceful Webb family. More recently, the homestead has been lovingly restored with so much character and careful consideration and for several years it was utilized as a bed and breakfast and events space. Its current owners have added many modern luxuries to the home including beautiful furnishings, heating, watering and security systems and used it as much loved country retreat. Set on 2 acres of sweet country garden, Mutton Falls continues to envelope its visitors in beauty. The character-filled main homestead features 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (both with claw foot baths). There is now a wonderfully cosy lounge and enormous fireplace where the old kitchen once stood. The kitchen is highlighted by a large wood burning agar and a wonderful timber island bench. French windows stream in the sunlight and look out over the herb garden and pebbled forecourt. The kitchen adjoins a large dining room ideal for family meals and dinner parties. A magical feature of the property is the old dairy now set up as a barn and used by the current owners as a wonderful spot for parties with friends; birthdays and the odd super competitive table tennis championship play off! There is also an old shed converted to a one car lock-up garage and workshop; a chook pen and a well that provides additional water for the beautiful country garden. The property is less than 50 metres from the Fish River and a magnificent row of Poplars announce its position and provide a picturesque outlook from the property. Mutton Falls, located in Tarana, is 2.5 hours ftom the Sydney CBD and is now seeking some new custodians to add their own history and colour.

Fashion WOMeN’s

Fantasy versus reality, it’s a sartorial showdown as international fashion houses demand we choose a side this season.

by Tracey Porter 28

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

LOUIS VUITTON

If the beginning was out of this world, so too were the designs when Louis Vuitton took to the Paris runway to launch its latest spring collections. Inspired by the notion of intergalactic travel without moving, the fashion house’s design head Nicolas Ghesquière managed to make it one hell of a journey. In just his second season for the brand after replacing former creative director Marc Jacobs, the current British Fashion Awards International Designer of the Year award winner embraced wearable design with beautifully cut blazers, cleverly knitted-together textured tops, raw indigo denim jeans and quilted biker jackets as close as it got to offering any form of tradition. But whether in this world or the next, fortune clearly favours the brave and it was his nod to the ‘70s. The flashes of velvet as seen in pantsuits, the sequined mini dresses and the splashes of leather – whether, acting as colour strips on a shirtdress or woven with metal rings - added real daring to the collection. Belted cargo jackets and print-laden white leather trousers rounded out the offering while an array of denimlooking leather bags and patchworklooking ankle boots aptly filled ticked the box when it came to cool accessories.

MIU MIU No where does it say that you have to have been a punk, a tart, a thief or a rebel in a former life to fall in love with Miuccia Prada’s magnificent summer 2015 offering. Because in trying the key readyto-wear pieces on you will almost certainly be transformed into one, or perhaps all, of the above. Boasting all the hallmarks of Prada’s impeccable attention to detail and beautiful tailoring, this collection is the very epitome of good girl gone not bad exactly, but… raunchy. Referencing John Waters twisted comedy Female Trouble; it combines rich 18th century-style silks with fraying wool checks and frills plaid bra tops. In another designer’s hands the ‘50s-influenced housecoat, pencil skirt and capri pant are the very essence of gentrification but in having their fate decided by Prada they are given bold new purpose. Daring décolletages and exposed midriffs are teamed with dirty shades of leather while on the feet large mules are dressed up with bows while gigantic platforms complete the reconstruction. But for those who are not quite ready to submit wholeheartedly into the new aesthetic, there is still a chance to buy into the Miu Miu magic with the label recently announcing plans to make its first foray outside of fashion and accessories and into the world of beauty with the launch of its first fragrance later this year.

CHRISTIAN DIOR

They say history never repeats but of course it is the unwritten rule of all super sartoralists to not only break with convention - but to utterly decimate it. And so it was when Dior head designer Raf Simons took to the runway to showcase his work on the brand’s Spring Summer 2015 readyto-wear collection. Justifiably pleased with what he achieved for Dior’s breathtaking couture show several months earlier, he sought to emulate it for his legion of fans seeking less expensive equivalents - in the process confirming the Belgian’s oftquoted mission to bring a reality and modernity to the label that reflects the way women live their lives today. Producing a masterful blend of both fantasy and reality, key looks were repeated in the form of his 18th century-influenced egg shaped skirts, smock shirts and sublime white cotton shirtdresses. While lacking some of the embellishment witnessed in the couture line, Simon’s signature tailoring meant the pieces lost little, if any, of their shine. With the collection themed around the concept of “looking forwards and backwards to prepare for the future through a dynamic sampling and remixing of history”, the evidence was clear with pleated minis, quilted silk skate shorts and floral bomber jackets rounding out what makes Simon one of the most in-demand designers on the planet.

prada Diehard Prada disciples over the ditch are delighted by the news the design house has opened a new store in Auckland’s Queen Street. Spread over two floors, the new space houses the women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, leather goods, accessories and footwear collections. Featuring the brand’s signature black-and-white marble chequered flooring, the bricks and mortar space is characterised by green fabric-clad walls while perspex display cases, transparent skylights and originally shaped tables complete the furnishing. GIORGIO ARMANI

Giorgio Armani’s much celebrated sense of class and power has always appealed to the Hollywood set so it is no surprise that in a career spanning more than 40 years he has designed costumes for more than 100 films. Those familiar with the Armani story may remember that it was the Italian designer’s success with the Richard Gere-led film American Gigolo in 1980 that to this day is considered one of the most innovative and successful brand promotional activities ever undertaken. For his part, Armani has always viewed the relationship with the cinema as essential - both because it appeals to the marketer in him but also for creative stimulus. His latest project sees Armani team with The Help actress Jessica Chastain to create the entire wardrobe for Chastain’s character in A Most Violent Year. The film is set in 1981 in New York and focuses on the struggle against political and industrial corruption by Chastain’s character and her husband. Armani worked alongside costume designer Kasia WalickaMaimone to produce a sophisticated wardrobe from the era, including crepe blouses, beaded jackets and wrap trenches and as well as providing access to his archives and even some original pieces from the period. His admiration for the period and obvious adoration for the big screen is perhaps why Armani chose a theme of renewal for his summer collection. He played with forms and proportions of jackets, showing shorts that appear to be small skirts and uniform-like jackets made from double-sided fabrics. An ability to evolve is what sees a man like Armani dominate for four decades where so many of his design colleagues have failed to even survive one.

PERFECT SCENTS By Helen Hawkes

Perfect presentation may start with haute couture but the finishing note is a fragrance that embodies the personality of the wearer. Just as who we are evolves, so too does the art of perfume making. A great perfumer or “nose” is considered an artist and a chemist, mixing ingredients to create fragrances for our time. According to fragrance expert, author and industry ambassador Michael Edwards, www.fragrancesoftheworld.com, it was the Egyptians who developed aromatic oils and essences 5,000 years ago. Great perfume lovers, they used almond and rose oil, frankincense and myrrh, cedar, mimosa, lily, nutmeg and sweet balsam in such diverse preparations as aphrodisiacs, medicines, cosmetics and incense, he says. “In fact, the art of perfumery in Ancient Egypt was so sophisticated that when archaeologists opened Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1922 they discovered an ointment that was still fragrant,” says Edwards. “However, it was the Persians who developed the use of exotic ingredients and the technique of extracting oils from flowers through distillation. This expertise was brought to Western Europe at the time of the Crusades.” According to Wikipaedia, the first modern perfume, made of scented oils blended in an alcohol solution, was concocted in 1370 for Elizabeth of Hungary and was known throughout Europe as Hungary Water. The Italians were next to experiment with fragrance, during the Renaissance, but it was France that quickly becoming the European centre of perfume. Cultivation of flowers for their perfume essence grew into a major industry in the south of France and, in 1656, a guild of perfume makers was established. In a return to historic tradition, where perfumes were custom made for royalty, or the wealthy, personalised scent is now coming back in vogue. While the uber-chic Cartier has always offered special orders in jewellery, its tailor-made fragrance “balances the high standards of the brand with personal desires”, says the fashion house. Clients of its Salon des Parfums, a private room in the rue de la Paix boutique in Paris, describe their dream perfume to perfumer Mathilde Laurent and, 12 months and 60,000 Euros later, the scent is presented in a Baccarat crystal bottle set with gold or in a selection of vintage collector’s bottles. Customised perfume is also seeing a strong demand in the United Kingdom. Recently Britain’s Floris, the world’s second oldest perfumery, expanded its store count on the back of the popularity of its bespoke fragrance services. In Australia, Melbourne’s Fleurage also offers fragrance fitting and custom perfume. Off the shelf, however, options are still large and luxurious. Here are some current favourite scents, as well as some luxury classics for both him and her.

BUILT FOR GOOD Bespoke furniture designer and artist Ed Cruikshank creates beautiful pieces of furniture, designed for life. Unique Luxury looks at the New Zealand-based designer’s past 10 years in business and some of his major, high-profile projects.

N

ew Zealand-based bespoke furniture designer Ed Cruikshank is firmly establishing himself as an internationally-renowned name with his successful business Cruikshank Furniture.

Based in historic Arrowtown near stunning Queenstown in NZ’s South Island, Ed has recently celebrated 10 years in business at Cruikshank Furniture after moving to Queenstown in 2002 from the United Kingdom. It was in the UK that Ed worked as a designer for the son of Princess Margaret, Viscount Linley, at his company Linley - refining his craft and reinforcing Ed’s already strong principles of quality, authenticity and enduring design in his work. After establishing Cruikshank Furniture in 2004, Ed has forged a successful career in New Zealand and internationally as a sought-after designer of luxury functional and artistic pieces, with much of his work being shipped to homes across the globe. Alongside his bespoke furniture pieces, Ed has built up the Cruikshank Collection of timeless signature designs – all of which are New Zealand-made from the finestquality materials. All Cruikshank pieces are expertly crafted with traditional values in mind. Ed’s philosophy is to create exceptional, timeless furniture, designed for generations to come: “I’m inspired by craftsmanship, authenticity and honesty of design. When a design is right it will work beautifully, stand the tests of time and be something you never tire of living with,” he says. Ed has accomplished a huge amount over the past 10 years in business. He is immensely humbled by the opportunities and is thrilled with all the design and artistic projects he’s been involved with. Currently, Ed is working on a collaboration in Sydney in which Cruikshank Furniture will team up with an established design house that specializes in the design and fit-out of luxury hotels and lodges. “We pride ourselves on being able to work remotely, while continuing to deliver that same exceptional service and quality to our loyal customers in Australia and beyond,” Ed says. In recognition of Cruikshank Furniture turning 10, Ed tells Unique Luxury Magazine about his top 10 design and artistic projects since the beginning of Cruikshank Furniture. First up is where it all began - with the innovative Firebrand Poker and Blower. Made from a hollow, subtly tapering stainless steel tube, the Firebrand Poker and Blower also works as a bellows. “The Firebrand was designed the first year I set up the business here, and it has become a Queenstown icon after 10 years,” Ed says. In 2006, Ed was commissioned by Sir Michael Hill to design new furniture pieces for the interior of awardwinning The Hills golf clubhouse in Arrowtown. Ed created a bespoke dining table of solid walnut – used as a boardroom table for the NZ Open – club chairs that doubled as dining chairs and a chef’s kitchen table with matching stools. U nique Luxur y

71

72

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

The following year, Ed was commissioned to design a collection of furniture for the dining and living saloons of the award-winning superyacht VvS1. Ed had already designed furniture for yacht interiors at Linley. “It was the ultimate bespoke project,” he says. In 2010, Ed was commissioned to design, build and furnish the art gallery wing of a Queenstown home owned by an international art collector in 2010. Ed had never designed a building before so was excited by the challenge. “We designed every subtle little detail. Not many people get to do the whole thing right the way through, so it was fantastic to have the opportunity to take a project from the architectural concept right through to the fine detailing of the furniture,” he says. Ed’s bespoke Roundabout Table also features in this home. Passionate creating furniture as art, Ed featured as an invited artist for the global Roundabout Exhibition in 2011. Roundabout involved 108 international fine artists – including fellow Kiwi artists Shane Cotton and Fiona Pardington. Ed designed two metal bookcases, modelled on the Twin Towers, one bearing the Martin Luther King Jr quote: “I have decided to stick with love; hate is too great a burden to bear”, and the other with the message reversed: “I have decided to stick with hate; love is too great a burden to bear.” The messages were written in Ed’s characteristic braille work. The same metal bookcases that Ed designed were also exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in Israel for the second leg of the Roundabout show. “It was a wonderful experience to be showing alongside these world-class contemporary artists in such a prestigious international gallery,” Ed recalls. After the devastating Canterbury earthquake of February 2011, Ed felt compelled to raise money for the people of Christchurch. He organised the Art With Heart auction, featuring works by artists from around the world, which raised more than $100,000 for the cause. “It was all about people working together and helping each other out – a global collaboration,” Ed says.

Ed’s furniture also features in the award-winning, luxury The Rees Hotel in Queenstown. Ed was commissioned to design a collection of handmade furniture for the complex’s 90 luxury apartments, 60 hotel suites and reception area. “The idea of the hotel was that it was a high-quality, long-lasting building, and the furniture had to align with that – to be built with longevity in mind. This was easy for me because it matched my design ethos of creating things to last for generations,” Ed says. Ed’s work also features in Wanaka, near Queenstown. At Wanaka’s popular modern French cuisine restaurant Bistro Gentil, the owner was in search of “New Zealand’s most comfortable dining chair”, to lengthen the stay of restaurant guests, when he met Ed. Cruikshank Furniture designed and built chairs, tables, cabinetry and the bar and service area for Bistro Gentil in 2012. Ed also created the base for a special Rangi Kipa carved table top, which included a private message in braille. Recently, Ed was commissioned by a prominent New Zealand businessman to design furniture for his holiday home near Wanaka in 2013. Inspired by the use of recycled timber and stone taken from the site excavation, Ed created furniture that is able to serve more than one function. “Although the pieces were designed for that particular space, I thought about where they might be in years to come. I aim to design pieces that will look good wherever they are now and wherever people take them,” he says. “It’s hard to believe that 10 years has gone by but when you look back you realise how much you can accomplish in that timeframe. It’s very satisfying and rewarding. It’s also gratifying to know that a lot of our work is commissioned by people living outside of New Zealand and that we are able to send it overseas, so they can enjoy Cruikshank pieces too - knowing they are receiving meaningful objects that cross the boundary between practicality and art,” Ed adds. http://www.cruikshank.co.nz/ U nique Luxur y

‘S’ STANDS for

‘SPORT’ The McLaren 650S Coupe REDEFINES the supercar segment

I

n March of this year, the highly anticipated McLaren 650S Coupe was unveiled and hasn’t ceased to disappoint supercar enthusiasts across the globe. The new model represents McLaren Automotive’s fastest, most engaging, best equipped and most beautiful series-production supercar yet. And Besopke Trivett is proud to represent its exclusive dealership partner in Australia, a striking (and mouth-watering) addition to our prestigious Trivett Bespoke range. The ‘S’ stands for ‘Sport,’ symbolic of the focus and developments made to handling, transmission, drivability and engagement in its creation. And of course there’s its maximum power, the model flaunting best power-to-weight ratio in its class. Its façade and interior inspired by McLaren’s new design language showcased in the McLaren P1, the 650S follows the automotive group’s new design ethos of ‘form follows function.’

74

w w w.uni queest at es.co m. a u

Thrilling to drive with dramatic appearance, the 650S is faster than many other ultra-sports car rivals, yet there is no compromise in luxury. Every millimetre of its Carbon Black Alcantara interior has been meticulously optimised for maximum driving pleasure and unparalleled comfort. One grip of the race-crafted steering wheel gives you a sense of the thrill experienced by racing drivers in a Formula 1 cockpit. Offering its driver panoramic views, the 650S is designed to help keep eyes on the road. The dashboard is simple and logical, and the steering wheel uncluttered. Whether clipping an apex on The Great Ocean Road or manoeuvring into a tight parking space, drivers can position the 650S with ease and perfection. In true McLaren form, every panel, every surface and every detail is

the result of painstakingly intricate craftsmanship, designed to take breaths away and send tingles of excitement up spines. Its signature dihedral doors are undeniably spectacular, lighter and more aerodynamic than conventional doors. The exterior styling includes full LED headlamps, bestowing distinctive illumination of the road ahead, all the while echoing the signature McLaren ‘speed marque’ logo in its design. The bonnet is finished with a new McLaren badge, reminiscent of the badge fitted to the iconic McLaren F1. Inspired by nature, its streamlined body with a three-piece bumper further strengthens the McLaren 650S as a reflection of utter sophistication, designed for the most stunning and efficient road driving experience. The result is a supercar that’s lean, light, beautiful and astonishingly quick. U nique Luxur y

L

ocated just 15 minutes from the beaches in Byron Bay and seven minutes to beautiful Bangalow on a leafy country road in the sought after hamlet of Possum Creek, this wonderful property oozes character and charm. A rare opportunity now exists to acquire a piece of local history. Run as a school from 1911 until 1961, the old school house had been converted and, until recently, run as the wonderfully popular Liliana’s Cafe and Gallery; attracting locals and visitors in their droves to enjoy perfectly prepared local produce. Approved for five-day trading and over 184 sqm of roofed area, this building would also make a great training facility, yoga space or gallery. Or, it could easily be converted back to additional accommodation (STCA). The main house, built by the current owners sits perched on a leafy ridge overlooking Possum Creek below. It features four bedrooms (or three plus study) and a large yet cosy lounge with separate kitchen dining area opening onto shaded verandas that make for seamless indoor-outdoor entertaining and of course relaxing! Downstairs there is a large laundry, ample storage, a media room or possible additional training space and a large four-car lock-up garage. Across the lawn is a very sweet one-bedroom guest cottage over two levels - also overlooking Possum Creek. Having poured several years of labour and love into this wonderful property the owners are looking to relocate to Brisbane to enjoy their grand children. Liliana’s would have to be one of the most beautifully presented properties in the area, it awaits your inspection and is looking for an owner ready to put their own touch on the place whilst adding to its long and colourful history.

PRADA

Marketing 101 dictates that choosing a celebrity to endorse your product is a route to success as about infallible as boasting an argyle mine in your super-sized asset portfolio. As with all investments of this nature there are of course key considerations to be taken into account – things such as ensuring you select the right personality to fit with your brand and that the character concerned is as genuine in their palpable praise for your product as you are in your desire not to flush your money down the toilet. But if ever the decision was made to stage a Master class in choosing the right Hollywood partnerships then surely Prada would have to be the first pick. Having recruited the crème de la crème of Hollywood’s top male talent for several years now (past faces include Ezra Miller, Michael Pitt and Christoph Waltz), Miuccia Prada’s cutting edge line up for this summer’s collections includes upand-coming stars Miles Teller (from indie hit Whiplash), Ansel Elgort (The Fault In Our Stars), Jack O’Connell (Skins) and the uber cool Ethan Hawke of Boyhood fame. Following the theme of “familiar things become less than familiar the more they’re looked at”, the brand’s ad campaign is shot by Craig McDean who has taken the collection’s core spring summer themes – muted blues, browns and oranges - and run with it in both colour and monochrome incarnations. Prada’s decision to continue its dalliance with stars of the big screen, as with the savvy choice to open a new store in Frankfurt completely dedicated to its men’s collections, is sure to prove popular.

Giorgio Armani The year was 1975 and after several years as a freelancer in the design wilderness, a 40-year-old Italian former window merchandiser and salesman by the name of Giorgio Armani decided to roll the dice. Confident in his own abilities yet tired of working under the name of others, Armani knew there had to be a better way to get his unique aesthetic in front of an audience who mattered. So he elected to take charge of his own fate and launched an eponymous menswear label. It proved just the recipe the world had been salivating for. This year at a sprightly 80, Armani celebrates 40 years in the business. But while his label has evolved to include an empire incorporating clothing, accessories, cosmetics, furniture and hotels, he has never made it look easier. Armani says he has always believed in building a wardrobe that lasts and never was this more evident than in his men’s spring summer collection where his offering was touted as a celebration of effortless elegance. Low key v-neck jersey tops and jackets dominated and came unlined or in a supple knit with just a hint of colour while pleat front trousers also arrived in a relaxed, roomy fit. While those in the know are keeping tight lipped on 40th celebration plans until later in the year, it is comforting to know the master of re-invention is still at the very top of his game.

LOUIS VUITTON

Exploration has always been a central theme for luxury brand Louis Vuitton whose very essence is built around the human desire to jump aboard the nearest train, plane or automobile and traverse new territory. And this season’s summer collection is no exception. Coming into his fifth year as Vuitton’s Men’s style director, Kim Jones clearly felt it was time to do some adventuring of his own as his mentor from London’s hallowed St Martins College encouraged him to realise his long held desire to head to India and breathe in the sights, sounds and colours of the second most populous country in the world. The sojourn resulted in Jones producing a collection filled with military references but then fused with the timeless elegance that evokes the Rajasthan maharajas of the early 20th century. Army shirts and shorts in suede made an appearance as too did military bomber jackets cut with reversible coloured satins, embellished flight suits with strategically placed buttons and zippers and chevron patterned shirts. Colour was everywhere with fuchsia and orange seamlessly worked in alongside khaki, beige, navy and sage green. The pieces are sure to work well with the new leather goods collection introduced by the esteemed fashion house. Dubbed V Line, the leather featured in the collection, which includes carryalls, backpacks and totes, is completely water-resistant and highlights the new V signature taken from the House archive.

PAUL SMITH Most celebrated designers have interests that extend beyond the world of fashion – more often than not it is in the creative fields where photography or art appear as a logical extension of their core talent. But popular British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith’s interests extend beyond the usual realm with the menswear icon always eager to take a break from the studio and take to the roads – on pushbike. In 2007 Smith’s dreams came true when asked to design that year’s London Tour de France Prologue shirt while in 2013 he was invited to design the leader’s jerseys for the Giro d’Italia, an annual cycle race that begins in Naples and ends in Brescia. Earlier this year his worlds again collided when he was engaged by two wheel clothing manufacturer Castelli to design looks for the 2015 Dubai Tour road cycle event. Forced to innovate in his fabric selection (a key demand for the design in the Middle Eastern project was to keep the riders cool), Smith used a breathable fabric on the front, inserted a full zip that can be opened if the wearer needs to cool down and incorporated a back that boasted a UV filter fabric. In his Fall Winter 2009 range Smith managed to incorporate some cycle tops paired with suits. Disappointingly among the modern suit jackets, botanical-look prints and silk shorts there was nothing to suggest cycling was a consideration when he released his latest summer offering into the market. Those that share his admiration for the sport remain hopeful his two great loves will again be reunited in future work.

DIOR HOMME

You don’t get to be one of the world’s most revered apparel brands without an insane amount of hard work, a heap of obsessive compulsion, a talented team of tailors and a few time-honoured rituals. Which may go some of the way to explaining why Christian Dior’s menswear offering Dior Homme has stood the test of time. Just after releasing its latest spring summer range, the brand revealed the ceremonial manner in which each Dior Homme collection is put together with nothing left to chance. The first step sees Kris Van Assche, the line’s creative director, design the collection’s looks in a sketch that encompasses four elements: the Dior Homme spirit; rigorous tailoring and urban ease; a play on form and colour and a revisit of menswear classics. Once interpreted by the design studio, the suit’s structure, hang and style are clarified in a technical drawing. To ensure the line is impeccable, fabric choice is of utmost importance whereby the hang and weight of the fabric are just as important as the look and feel. In keeping with the purest form, the outlines of each pattern piece, placed on lengths of fabric held in place by weights, are chalked out before being cut by hand. The tailor then marks out the stress lines together with the outline of the lapel, the jut of the shoulder and volume of the chest. A layer of canvas, tacked to the fabric by hand, gives life to the suit. From there the collar is added, sleeves sewn and buttons and embellishments stitched. After being presented to Van Assche for any final adjustments, the suit is then sent to the production ateliers where it is produced in limited runs and from where it will eventually clothe men of distinction the world over.

I

t was a time for several birthday’s at this year’s Retromobile, the international event for collectors’ cars held at the Porte de Versailles in Paris in February. Not the least of those anniversaries was the fact that it was the 40th Edition of Retromobile itself. And what a 40th party it turned out to be with a wonderful array of over 500 classic, vintage and veteran cars for the 120,000 visitors, along with possibly the greatest classic car auction ever staged anywhere in the world. Many might think that the world’s automobile capital is in the USA, perhaps at Pebble Beach, or in Italy at Modena, home to Ferrari and Maserati et al or in England at Goodwood which was featured in our last issue of Unique Luxury Magazine. Without a doubt though in early 2015 the attention of the motoring world was focussed on Retromobile. There are, in fact, three major auctions held in conjunction with Retromobile. On the Wednesday evening at the Place Vauban at Les Invalides was the razzamatazz of RM in a packed marquee. On

the Thursday afternoon the old worldliness of Bonhams amid the magnificence of the Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées, an incredible example of Beaux-Arts architecture from 1900 and a building from its beginnings synonymous with innovation and modernity and the motor car. The third and the official Retromobile auction was held on the Friday by French house Artcurial, and it was here that the surprises were in store. Whilst RM and Bonhams of course held some surprises in the prices of the cars that they sold and some that they did not sell, the Artcurial show was in a different league. I should have been prepared, ready for what was about to happen. After all, news of the Baillon Collection had spread like wildfire across the specialist and mainstream media since its rediscovery on 30th September 2014. The collection of industrialist Roger Baillon and his son Jacques, had lain hidden and forgotten in the middle of the French countryside for decades. It was the motoring find of not just

this century but probably of all time - the fabled barn-find collection that did the internet round, but this time that actually did exist. Bugatti; Delage; Delahaye; Facel Vega; Ferrari; Hispano-Suiza; LorraineDietrich; Maserati; Panhard et Levassor; Talbot Lago: legendary names and legendary cars with bodywork by Saoutchik, Chapron and the like. What is more, completely unmolested, untouched and often, just as described in the Artcurial catalogue the vehicles were ‘mecanomorphes’ - most of them were dead cars, decomposed wrecks. Artcurial had priced them accordingly. Lot one: Singer roadster 1500, offered with no reserve and an estimate of 200 - 800 euro. It sold for 10,728 euro! I should have been prepared for what was going to happen. I knew what was going to happen. But when it happened I could not believe my eyes and ears. At the public viewing, the cars presented as though being discovered for the first time by the public in a dark

barn, were almost invisible. In the dark the dusty relics were almost inaccessible to the eye, the odd spotlight illuminating here and there, as if by monkish candlelight, the dark space containing the 59 car carcasses. The crowds were queuing just for a glance, a snatched glimpse as if from the opening and closing of an old camera shutter. The presentation was remarkable, the more obscure the object the more the public desired to see these relics from another age. The condition of the artefacts seemingly so much worse when viewed directly with the human eye rather than when seen as mere images on line or in magazines. The attention of motorists the world over was centred on this dark room, the published estimated sale prices quoted encouraging one and all that they could be in with a chance to purchase a piece of this re-found automotive treasure trove. Fifteen minutes before the scheduled start it was like being at a football match. The pushing crowd outside Hall 2.1 (adjacent to the U nique Luxur y

main Retromobile exhibition hall) embodied the atmosphere of a sold out derby game. Envious glances were cast in my direction as I made my way through the mob, ushered in to the inner sanctum by the security guards courtesy of my press pass. Inside it was the same; standing room only, serried ranks of TV cameras. The show was about to begin. I was prepared, after all I run the biggest auction in the Southern Hemisphere, I had previously been Head of Cars for two major auction houses. I know the game, what goes on and what to expect….No I didn’t!

Aston Martins on display at the Grand Palais for the Bonhams Auction

The Artcurial auction room during the sale of the Baillon Collection

There were 3,500 people in the salesroom, 1,600 registered bidders with another 1,000 registered to bid on-line. In total the Baillon Collection sold for 25.15 million euro/18.7 million pounds sterling/ US$28.5 million. But that was just part of it for there were also another 116 cars to follow after the 59 in the Baillon Collection. It was nothing short of incredible and perhaps only the statistics can do justice to the 11 hour marathon conducted by the herculean but diminutive maestro auctioneer Hervé Poulain. The total for the 2015 Retromobile Sale was 46 ME/34 M Pounds/US$52 million including the Baillon Collection. It was a record for a collectors’ car sale in Continental Europe, a record for a collection of cars sold in Continental Europe. In total 89% of the lots were sold (100% of the Baillon Collection) and 85% of the sale total acquired by foreign buyers. There were ten world records established. It was the sale of the century and without doubt the most exciting moment was the appearance of the star of the sale, one of the most coveted cars of the second half of the 20th Century. The room was plunged into darkness, the music started and the audience stood on their chairs to see the appearance of Lot 59, the 1961 Paris Motor Show, exAlain Delon, Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, sell for a world record fee of 16.3 MEuro/12.1 million pounds/US$18.5 million, amid resounding applause, to Simon Kidston on behalf of an anonymous overseas client. It was pure theatre, pure drama and wonderful to be part of it. To see the enthusiasm and frenetic bidding as some cars fetched up to ten times their pre-sale estimates was just mind blowing. The bidding battles and applause were not for the faint hearted or indeed those with small pockets. To be a spectator at this event was like being at a concert or sporting event, the auctioneer orchestrating or refereeing the bidders who were his players, we the bystanders witnesses to what was taking place on the field of dreams. It was as exciting as anything I have seen and I still cannot believe that anyone would pay 1.7 MEuro/1.3 M pounds/US$1.9 million for what can only be described as the total wreck of the 1949 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport by Saoutchik (estimate 400,000 - 600,000 euro). I wonder how long it will take and how much more money it will cost before we see it winning at Pebble Beach and Villa d’Este. Au revoir Paris! U nique Luxur y

GOOD KARMA Karma Kandara - Uluwatu Bali By Bronwen Gora

W

hen your luxury Balinese villa is a lengthy distance from the main resort and a three course lunch for two is the room service order, it’s reasonable to expect a half hour wait at the very least. Not so at the five star Karma Kandara resort in Uluwatu. Within 15 minutes two smiling staff whisked expertly prepared meals including two fresh squeezed juices with a complex list of ingredients - to our door. They proceeded to elegantly serve our mini feast in seconds before vanishing just as quickly. We were suitably astonished, but this was among many instances during our stay that demonstrated why this particular five star destination is one of the most talked about luxury resorts Bali has to offer. For a start the scenery and perspective from Karma Kandara’s cliff-top location is something to behold. The network of close to 60 luxurious villas – complete with private pools, gardens and available in all kinds of configurations – is spread out along a escarpment 80 metres above one of Bali’s most famous surf breaks. The beach below, along with a restaurant and bar, are accessed by funicular, an impressive piece of engineering that runs night and day between the main resort and the seaside. Karma’s main restaurant Di Mare is perfectly placed to enjoy the view, as is the Moroccan style bar above, and the spectacular infinity pool below. The setting could not be more perfect had it been crafted in a Hollywood studio. Karma is so vast and hilly that the network of villas linked by cobble-stoned paths is serviced by golf buggies manned by a small army of staff. Like the meals, the buggies magically appear in minutes and sometimes seconds after a phone call request is made to reception, making one wonder exactly how many staff are employed to make this place run so efficiently. U nique Luxur y

133

Being able to indulge in Karma Kandara’s decadent offerings was just the ticket for us. We had come off the back of an arduous fiveday juice and yoga detox course involving long days and physical and emotional purging. While refreshed, kicking back to do as we wished was divine. Among our first stop was, understandably, Di Mare restaurant. Here we were delighted to find oysters imported from France, a health menu option full of divine salads and a range of delicious a la carte meals. Scottish chef Iain Murray, whose resume includes the revered Orient Express group and working for Michelin-starred chefs, has gone to much effort ensuring his food suits both a fine establishment but also the hot and humid climate. Choices such as beetroot cured salmon and octopus carpaccio had us mulling over our cocktails for quite some time. The restaurant down by Karma Kandara’s private beach is more casual but just as spectacular, filled with funky furnishings, misting 134

fans to keep guests cool and topped by a peaked fantasy-worldstyle thatched roof that would not look out of place in Lord Of The Rings. It carries a true beach bar atmosphere that’s had the likes of CNN Travel placing it among ‘The World’s 50 Best Beach Bars’. On some evenings, there’s pumping music reminiscent of Ibiza. The ultimate luxury is lying in a deck chair here or on a beach lounge by day and ordering cocktails and food to your side. Snorkels and masks are also on hand as there is plenty of marine life and corals within the confines of the reef-sheltered lagoon. And when it comes time to retire to the restaurant, there is even a shower built into the existing rock face to rinse off the salt and sand. There’s always a chance, however, at Karma Kandara to relax and luxuriate just that little bit more. Most divine was Karma Kandara’s extraordinary spa, where the massage room was just as fabulous as the treatments themselves. Our room perched on the cliff’s edge

had an enormous window overlooking the ocean making it hard to tear ourselves away from the view and settle onto the beds. Here we were pampered with facials and massages that relaxed us so much we could barely move. If this wasn’t heaven on earth, it certainly felt like it. Sunsets are a major attraction of staying at Karma Kandara, so when dusk approached we were already ensconced on one of the brightly coloured lounges beneath the ornate Moroccan lamps in the Temple Lounge & Bar overlooking the ocean. As the sky and clouds changed colours in the fading light, we snapped away taking pictures along with guests hailing from all corners of the earth. It’s little wonder that Karma Kandara attracts its fair share of entertainers, famous actors and the occasional Royal. Our two-bedroom villa was just as alluring as the rest of the resort. It came with a generous courtyard garden, private pool with cabana-style Balinese day bed as well as two deck chairs on the front porch. Inside was an enormous living area filled with a comfortable modular lounge big enough for at least 10 of our closest friends, plus satellite television, CD/DVD player, iPod dock, dining table and mini bar. Adjacent lay the fully equipped

kitchen with sleek black marble bench tops, microwave and Smeg appliances. Beyond were the dark timbered bedrooms (complete with pillow menu) and chic bathrooms with rain showers. We even found an internal garden. One afternoon we were so relaxed it was hard to make a move down to dinner, so inviting and comfortable – not to mention cool - was our temporary new home.

COMANCHE

Super Fast Super Maxi By James Nicholls

W

ithout doubt the biggest splash on the water of the recently closed Southern Hemisphere summer was the highly anticipated appearance of Comanche on Sydney Harbour. After her debut appearance in the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge in which she finished second, Comanche again finished runner up to the evergreen Wild Oats XI, owned by Bob Oatley, in the 70th edition of the epic Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race. Comanche was built by the oldest boat building company in America, Hodgdon Yachts. Having started in 1816 during the era of Clipper Ships, Hodgdon, based in Maine, whilst still family owned and run, has evolved into a world leader in advanced composite construction. There is a lot of carbon fibre in Comanche. Indeed it is one of the largest single hull infusions ever undertaken whilst the sixteen bulkheads, for lightness but without sacrificing strength, are carbon/nomex. Measuring 100 feet length overall and 26 feet wide Comanche contains some 8 tons of carbon fibre, all told, laid over a Kevlar core. Designed by Guillaume Verdier/VPLP Design this 100 foot monohull has been built to take part in major ocean races and not only win but break records at events such as the Sydney to Hobart. However Comanche was only launched in Newport, Rhode Island on October 13th 2014, so just the logistics of getting the 100 foot Super Maxi to Australia and race ready on time was a challenge. Challenges are what drive the owners of this new boat however and not for nothing is Jim Clark worth $1.5 billion according to Forbes. The 70 year old, (who co-founded Netscape and was also an investor in Apple, Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook, and Twitter), loves French wine and art, possessing a 30,000 bottle collection of Burgundies and paintings by Monet and Matisse and more pertinently the ocean. Clark along with his Australian wife, sometime model Kristy Hinze-Clark, had targeted

the Sydney Hobart as the first of the major offshore races which they hope to win. So finishing second may have been a disappointment but realistically a fantastic achievement considering that the build took one year on a project which would normally take double that length of time and that the run down to Hobart was the yacht’s first proper outing. To be able to push the brand new, out of the box, boat to its limits with so many unknowns and unanswered questions is testimony to the design and build quality. At the helm of the reputed $100 million yacht is world champion skipper Ken Read of North Sails who has a wealth of big boat experience on the Volvo Ocean Race as well as being helmsman on board two Stars & Stripes America’s Cup campaigns for the legendary Dennis Conner. The 53 year old Read said before the big race, “This boat is a bit of a beast. Do we know how it is going to handle in typical Hobart conditions? The answer quite frankly is no, we have no idea…One of the objectives of this boat for Jim Clark from day one was to promote the sport that’s why the crazy paint job. Sailing is way down the list of sports in the US unlike Australia. Hopefully we will travel around the world with this thing and show people what this sport is all about.” This new super maxi goes like an arrow up wind, built as she is with a very wide hull specifically for this purpose, but also shows a considerable turn of speed down wind too. Hardly surprising that she is super fast, reputedly capable of 30 knots (35 mph) considering the resources and technology that have been thrown at it and considering some of its impressive statistics. Its mast is 150 feet tall and it spinnaker, the sail used for sailing off the wind, is an enormous 11,000 square feet, an area the size of two and a half official NBA basketball courts! This turn of speed was much in evidence at the beginning of the 2014 Sydney Hobart Race. Comanche simply burst U nique Luxur y

across the start line, surging forward at an incredible speed, shocking Wild Oats whose skipper was left wondering why he was standing still. It was only comparative, Wild Oats was shifting but Comanche’s start was simply irresistible as the brand new $100 million boat led the fleet out of the Harbour. As Comanche turned south at the mark in open sea outside the entrance to Sydney Harbour it was in the fastest time ever set! Comanche’s screaming start had justified all the pre-race hype and hoopla. Slowly and inexorably though Wild Oats doggedly chased Comanche down in what was to become a two horse race. Miles ahead of the fleet and averaging an incredible speed of over 12 knots over the whole race, the two favourites pulled further and further away. If a stiff breeze had stayed on the beam then Comanche would have skipped clear, but as the wind dropped Wild Oats continued to knife its way through the sea. The broader bottomed Comanche in contrast seemed stuck to the water. The breeze came again and Comanche started to close the gap on Wild Oats. But it was not to be. Wild Oats XI clung on up the Derwent River to the finish off Hobart’s historic Battery Point and a warm welcome at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. The old American Civil War field cannon signalling victory as the first boat crossed the finish line in a time of 2 days 2 hours 3 minutes and 26 seconds. Just 49 minutes later Comanche finished in second place, a remarkable achievement by skipper Ken Read and his crew considering the boat had only been put in the water for the first time two months prior. It had undertaken a very tough test and passed with flying colours but could not prevent Wild Oats from claiming that record breaking eighth line honours victory. In more suitable wind conditions who knows though what the outcome might have been. Comanche certainly created quite a stir down under and is sure to do so wherever and whenever it takes part in other classic races such as the Bermuda race, the RORC Caribbean 600, the Transpacific Yacht Race or the Transatlantic Race. Sydney Hobart 2015 is not on the list but who knows what Boxing Day 2016 might bring. U nique Luxur y

rom a bare cow paddock in 1983 to a beautiful rainforest botanical garden, this is potentially one of the best personal environmental projects in the Byron Shire: a totally unique property.

The first of some 20,000 rainforest plants were planted on Christmas Day 1983 and, as with all botanical gardens, this property will only improve in value as it matures. This will be a truly unique legacy to pass on through the generations or an amazing environmental investment property to on-sell in the future. The gardens have been established around the ideal central main house site, well away from the boundaries and protected from wind and the summer sun, yet benefitting from the warmth of the winter sun. Here you can build your dream home, subject to council approval, potentially up

to three levels because of the site topography with room also for a three to four car garage. A 200m long tree and palm lined driveway leads to a turning circle with space for another two car garage and workshop or shed. Three phase power is already connected to the property. With the exception of the main house site, the entire 5 acres (approx.) is your garden with the feel of a peaceful and tranquil national park. The body of water on the property has been landscaped to give the illusion that there is a river heading off into the distance. All the rainforested areas require no mowing, brush cutting and little to no weeding. The combination of rainforest and a body of water has created a wellestablished habitat for over a hundred observed species of both land based animals and bird species, there is also a breeding Koala colony. here’s no doubt many of us hanker for simpler times. Oldfashioned manners and timeless elegance always appeal. Yet we also want them bundled together with the conveniences of modern life, but matching the two is no easy task.

orchids either of us had ever seen. Although a luxury travel writer used to all manner of fanciness, I, and Mr Plus One included, were already falling for The Langham’s charms. And we had been inside for less than five minutes.

The challenge is amplified when applied to a luxury hotel, too. Cosy-ness and the latest technology are strange bedfellows. Yet Sydney’s newest five star boutique establishment, The Langham, passes the test with alacrity, serving up an experience this writer has not stopped talking about since she (and Mr Plus One) road tested it first hand.

There was more to come – a lot more. Each guest here is assigned a ‘service stylist’ and ours, Jonathon, showed us to our room on the second floor overlooking what will become the parkland of the Barangaroo development on the CBD’s western foreshores and beyond to the Blue Mountains. If we needed anything at all, or had any questions, we were to call himself or his colleague.

The Langham Sydney opened its doors in December after a $30 million revamp of long-time Sydney institution, The Observatory Hotel. Owned by revered Orient Express Hotels group, one of the most prestigious hotel and rail brands in the world, The Observatory had a solid following of seasoned travellers and locals who adored its old world feel. But circumstances changed and new owners were sought for the property, which at the time was fitted out with heavy furnishings in a style reminiscent of a grand 19th century colonial home.

The Langham prides itself on providing Sydney’s most generous suites and indeed ours was enormous. Mr Plus One who cracks the two metre mark on the height scale was overjoyed by the super size kind bed. “Finally, a bed for someone my size,” he exclaimed. Meanwhile I was coveting the elegant white custommade 1940s style bedroom furniture and contemplating the welcome gift of macaroons.

The ideal solution for the hotel’s future arrived in the form of Hong Kong-based Langham Hospitality Group which scooped up the property in August 2012 for a mere $40 million. The Langham was London’s first ‘Grand Hotel’ in 1865 and led the way in what it bills as ‘sophisticated and gracious hospitality’. The group now has a chain of elegant and renowned hotels worldwide, and Sydney is the latest. The resulting the makeover is nothing short of spectacular. Stepping into The Langham Sydney’s gleaming white marble foyer we were both immediately soothed by an air of calm. Eclectic yet understated artwork greeted us along with a lobby of extraordinary bespoke furniture. Just before reaching reception we became transfixed by an enormous vase brimming with the most superb

The bathroom was almost half the size of the bedroom, fitted with a super sized bath, huge double sink vanity and shower bearing a decorated glass door. Our cupboard still bore a few scuff marks from years of use, but as a hotel representative later explained, some battle scars of yesteryear are being left so that the hotel retains the lived in feel that so many of its regular guests enjoy. The atmosphere definitely matches what general manager Sonia Lefevre initially set out to achieve – a place that feels more like a luxury residence than a hotelb (albeit with free, seamless Wi Fi and Bluetooth connection throughout). After the rooms the star features are downstairs in the Palm Court cocktail bar and the Kent Street Kitchen restaurant headed by Paris-trained chef de cuisine Daniel Rudolph. In the Palm Court bar we were served by top molecular mixologists, Tim Bulmer, who proceeded to impress us with his inspired array of one-off cocktails U nique Luxur y

that arrive in clouds of liquid nitrogen smoke. Our favourite, and one that is also a big hit with most customers was the Taipei, a tropical tipple that almost tastes healthy thanks to the ginger, coriander, lemongrass and Kaffir lime leaves flavoring its base of vodka. Mr Plus One indulged his love of whisky and mezcal at the same time with the Veracruz, a blend of the latter and Laphroaig Quarter Cask Whisky. One of the most interesting of the extensive menu, it had hints of cherry wood smoked orange and honey.

Kent Street Kitchen

As Tom pointed out from the start, this is definitely not your typical city cocktail bar. “All these drinks were created with what I call complicated simplicity,” he said. What he meant is that while creating the drink is an intricate process, the flavours are simply expressed and easy to distinguish. Even superfoods are used to make some cocktails, such as Fair Quinoa vodka and Manuka honey. Another signature feature of The Langham Sydney is its vast range of produce made in house, from the butter served with the dinner rolls which is flaked with real truffle shavings, to even the peanut butter on the breakfast buffer and the tonic water used in an elaborate gin-based drink. The Langham’s house tonic is a blend of exotic-sounding Peruvian cinchona bark, ginger, lemongrass, citrus and agave nectar. Chef Daniel Rudolph will soon be making his own cheeses, from ricotta to mozzarella.

Kent Street Kitchen Chefs table

Dinner was another elegantly executed experience: ocean trout expertly baked with pearl couscous and smoked mullet roe along with a lamb rib eye balanced with goats feta and lamb jus. At bed-time we availed ourselves of another menu – that of pillows. With eight to choose from, we dialed room service for a memory foam contour and a therapeutic pillow with 10 magnets. The next day, Mr Plus One went off to work while I tried out the small but well-equipped gym before plunging into the beautiful swimming pool beneath a ceiling studded with tiny lights constructed to resemble the night sky. This is indeed the way to live luxuriously in the middle of the city while feeling a hundred times removed from the frenetic busy-ness taking place in the CBD just moments down the road.

NANUKU A RARE CHANCE TO OWN A

PRIVATE FIJIAN PARADISE

U nique Luxur y

185

F

ew people realise it, but the chance to own their very own piece of the relaxed island paradise of Fiji is extremely rare. The opportunity to buy private land on one of Fiji’s white sandy beaches is even rarer still. Most Fijian land is owned by the Crown or villages and can only be leased. Just 9 per cent is classified as freehold (land which can be owned outright). And just a fraction of that is beachfront. Nanuku Ocean Estates, affiliated with the prestigious Nanuku Auberge Resort Fiji, falls into this exclusive category.

“stress-free island atmosphere, warm climate, stunning beaches and friendly, happy people”

The Estates has just released an intimate collection of 10 oceanfront blocks of freehold land, giving buyers a unique opportunity to create their own private sanctuary for escape and relaxation amid authentic Fijian culture and outdoor adventure. For years Fiji has lured holiday makers seeking its stress-free island atmosphere, warm climate, stunning beaches and friendly, happy people (a recent global survey found Fijians the most content people on earth). The country itself is made up of 320 diverse islands. The main island is Viti Levu, where the capital Suva is located. Nanuku Oceans Estates is also located on Viti Levu, so access is excellent. Options include a short 15-minute flight from Suva then 45 minute drive. Or even more convenient is a quick private flight to Nanuku’s own private airstrip. Nanuku is tucked away on Viti Levu’s south coast also known as the Coral Coast near Pacific Harbour, a stretch of coast known as the “Adventure Capital of Fiji”. Pacific Harbour offers a fantastic array of outdoor activities including some of the world’s best snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing, along with waterfall hikes (the mountainous backdrop of this region is both dramatic and extensive), rainforest ziplines, shark dives and deep water fishing. You can also sail, kayak and paddle board in the crystal-clear turquoise water. But it is the intimacy, privacy and exclusivity of the Estate – the chance to be one of a few to carve out a piece of this island paradise and rediscover your authentic self – that makes this such a rare opportunity. Nanuku itself is made up of three tranquil coves near Pacific Harbour. Each parcel of land for sale is arranged poetically and peacefully along the sweeping shoreline; the beach is wide and swimmable year round (even the President of Fiji has a home there). Each residence will be oriented toward the shore to capture ocean breezes and panoramic views. The land faces South and this means you get the sun for most of the day. As the prevailing winds and more dramatic weather comes from the North and West, the U nique Luxur y
