Chamonix Valley
Les Chalets de Philippe
T
he mountain gods decided to get serious when they happened upon the Chamonix region of France. Instead of mere alpine splendour they turned Chamonix into a showstopper of narrow valleys flanked by steep-sided mountains and rocky, needle-like spires that soared spectacularly into the sky. Enormous glaciers flowed from the peaks, long snowy valleys descended to the valley floors and sheer couloirs were created at angles that in the future only the best mountaineers would tackle in summer and the most expert skiers descend in winter. Not for nothing has this destination become the most revered and spiritual mecca among people who want to soak up nature’s best while enjoying a gorgeous French village. Chamonix is also a magnet for the world’s best and most dedicated skiers, boarders and climbers. Indeed this spell-binding scenery, visible from anywhere in the 10kmplus long Chamonix valley, has placed the region amid the world’s most popular year-round destinations.
Delicious dishes from the Albert 1er restaurant
But where to stay that will satisfy the fussiest among us - and be worthy of the top class alpine display Chamonix provides? Nestled just below the area’s main Grand Montet peak, Le Hameau Albert 1er was new in 2005 and has since risen to five star status thanks to its two star Michelin restaurant and 100-year-old chalet-style rooms punctuated with designer furniture. This has also earned the hotel a Relais et Chateaux status. There is a library-cum-lounge area, an indoor pool, and a farmhouse annexe. The service is impeccable along with the cuisine. Staff are unfailingly polite and quite unstuffy for such a high end establishment. U nique Luxur y

Rooms are cosy yet modern. This writer found that half the fun was ensuring each designer chair in our room was used at some stage during the stay. Never before had we seen such interesting designs in a mountain resort hotel room. Rooms are divided into three types – traditional and refined in the main hotel, authentic and alternative at the Chalet Soli wing and chic within the Farmhouse annexe. Le Hameau Albert receives stiff competition these days from Les Chalets de Philippe. This chalet-style hotel is a favourite of such people as Kylie Minogue and her boyfriend Andrew Velencoso and Monaco’s royal family. Here luxury is redefined: the linen is hand-embroidered, the food prepared by Michelin star chefs and the chalets filled with antique furniture. Vintage milk pails decorate the grounds and fairy lights sparkle in the gardens at night. Fresh baked pastries are delivered to the doorstep each morning. There is a hammam, private cinema and toiletries by Hermes. As if that were not enough, all this is enjoyed with views of Europe’s highest peak, Mont Blanc, thanks to the clever orientation of the chalets. Once guests have torn themselves away from their luxurious hotels and stepped outside to enjoy nature’s delights, the choices are many. Chamonix’s main five resorts - Grands Montets, Les Houches, Le Tour/Balme, La Flegere and Le Brevent are dotted along the valley and easy to reach. If you have not hired a car (or even if you have) the shuttle bus system efficiently whisks visitors between all resorts and villages. The basic Chamonix pass covers all these resorts and the shuttle bus system. Another move that comes highly recommended if you come here to ski is to hire the services of a mountain guide. This will make the most of any trip up into the peaks. Chamonix is famous for its off-piste skiing which is really only possible with a guide if you are not completely familiar with the area. Rest assured you will be in the hands of the world’s very best, however. Chamonix is the headquarters of Europe’s mountain guide training centre and there are hundreds of guides waiting to avail you of their expert knowledge. If you only hire a guide once, do so to ski the region’s most famous run, the Vallee Blanche, which is suitable for novices and above. Skiing the Vallee Blanche involves taking a literally breath-taking cable car ride to the top of the 3800m Aiguille di Midi. Once clients have gingerly made their way down the path leading onto the slopes their guide takes them on a leisurely cruise down expansive slopes, past glaciers, rocky spires and ice caves. In keeping with the French way, the run is broken up with a stop at a traditional mountain restaurant housed in a quaint and gorgeous stone building where hearty lunches and beautiful pastries materialise from the tiny kitchen. Another guided run to try is the Mer de Glace which involves being roped down a rather steep section (far easier than it sounds). Chamonix town is touristy but also rather beautiful, a car free cobble stoned area full of the usual tourist distractions one would expect in an international destination but noted for its stunning patisseries and restaurants which the French do oh so well. Perching yourself at one of Chamonix’s perfect little café tables surrounded by glorious mountain scenery has to be one of the French Alps’ most delectable experiences. www.chaletsphilippe.com/ www.hameaualbert.fr/en U nique Luxur y 11

THE WORLD OF
TRUFFLES By Sarah Swan
Chef Martin Boetz (from the truffle hunt)

“The most learned men have been questioned as to the nature of this tuber, and after two thousand years of argument and discussion their answer is the same as it was on the first day: we do not know. The truffles themselves have been interrogated, and have answered simply: eat us and praise the Lord.” Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
T
ruffles are less one of those ‘you love them or you hate them’ moments, and more a ‘you love them if you’ve tried them, or you’ve never tried them’ situation. That’s just my opinion of course. I could wax lyrical about these glorious tubers for hours and take up pages, so I will try to keep it simple, a truffle 101 on the why, how and where of these tubers and what extraordinary things we can do with them. There are 2 main or well-known varieties of truffle – the black or ’Perigord’ truffle, named for the region (but of course also found in Australia, NZ, Oregon, Croatia, Spain and Italy amongst other places) and the white truffle, also known as the Alba truffle – famously from this area in the North of Italy. Black truffles form a symbiotic relationship with the roots of oak and hazelnut trees, and the resulting truffles are harvested in winter. White truffles will grow with oak, hazelnut, poplar and beech. Though not as strong in flavour as the Perigord, the white truffles are very much loved. The busiest Italian market months for the white are October and November. Truffles like high alkaline soils to grow, low levels of moisture and of course, being close to their preferred tree. They produce a scent that mimics that of a male pig sex hormone. For this reason, female pigs have been the traditional truffle hunters, the problem being that as astute as they are, they also enjoy eating the truffles when they find them, usually sitting just below
the surface of the soil or as far down as 20cm. Dogs have been trained in recent years to do the jobs the sows once did, with great success. The history of truffles is long, so I’ll begin somewhere slightly modern – the 17th Century. The Parisian markets were flourishing and the French were renewing their culinary love affair with more natural flavours and slowly letting go of the heavy spices of the Orient, but truffles were incredibly expensive and the only folk who could afford them were noblemen. Renowned composer Rossini (he for whom Tournedos Rossini is named) was a truffle lover of extreme proportions. There is a story of him winning a bet – the takings, a turkey stuffed with truffles. When the bet was not honoured with excuses of a poor season and no truffles to be found, Rossini allegedly cried “Nonsense, nonsense – nothing but false rumours circulated by turkeys that don’t want to be stuffed!” The specialist French winter truffle markets have remained the same now for many generations. The largest for Perigord truffles in France and possibly the world is at Richerenches in Vaucluse, but any number of small towns and villages across Southern France hold seasonal truffle markets – it’s a meeting place for the farmers, the sellers, the suppliers and the chefs, and of course the truffle brokers who seek the best purchase for the big companies. The sellers will work from the boot of their car or van – bargaining, negotiating, making deals. In January, when the Perigord is at its most fragrant, the markets bustle with activity. Current Périgord black truffle production in France is estimated to total around 20 metric tonnes (peaking at 46 tonnes in the best years) compared with 1,000 tonnes in 1900. The scarcity is understandably driving prices up worldwide. The world’s most expensive known truffle was a white truffle from Tuscany weighing around 1.5kg, sold for US$330,000 at a 2007 auction in Hong Kong to casino tycoon Stanley Ho. U nique Luxur y

Closer to home, the first black truffles harvested in the Southern Hemisphere were in Gisborne, New Zealand in 1993. Today, there are 9 producing trufferies with many more trees planted and yet to produce from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South. While New Zealand’s current production sits around 20 kg per year, requests top 100 kg per week! In 1999 the first Australian truffles were harvested in Tasmania after trees were, 8 years earlier, inoculated with the truffle fungus and fingers and toes were crossed. The trial was hugely successful and the industry is looking strong. Western Australia had a first harvest in 2004, and Victoria and NSW followed suit. Once you have your prized truffle, what to do with it? The great thing about these delicious tubers is that simple is best, as with many of the world’s luxury ingredients. Truffles can be stuffed under the skin of a roast chicken, shaved plentifully over freshly cooked pasta with Parmigiana Regianno, or even over pizza. I like to split a round of ripe brie in half, shave black truffle through the middle and piece it back together to enjoy with sourdough. Great with risotto, sublime over a perfectly soft fried egg on mushrooms for breakfast and many would say it works as an ice cream flavouring – I’m yet to be convinced. Store your truffle wrapped individually in a piece of paper towel, in a paper bag or perforated plastic container. It will maintain perfect freshness for 3 days but will realistically still be wonderful eating for about 3 weeks until the flavour starts to dissipate. You can also freeze your truffle (in a small air tight container or vacuum pack), but you will not be re-freezing your truffle once defrosted so be cautious with this one. My favourite method of truffle storage though is to place it in a glass jar with fresh raw eggs. The truffle permeates the eggs and they are incomparable cracked over a bowl of hot pasta or used in an omelette. I was lucky enough this Australian season to go on a truffle hunt in the Southern Highlands of NSW with 2 very special and qualified people. Duncan Garvey (along with Peter Cooper) established ‘Perigord Truffles of Tasmania’ in 1992, and consequently Tasmania’s first trufferie the following year, producing Australia’s first French black truffle in 1999. Duncan was the first to import French truffles to Australia and supplied to the best restaurants countrywide. Trufferies in NSW and Victoria followed and soon enough the export business. Perigord of Tasmania now exports Australian truffles to Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and Europe. Tawnya Bahr is a jill of all trades and woman of many talents – food consultant, qualified chef, master of gastronomy “in the process” – and general foodie and gastronome. She is above all, a thorough and thoroughly educated tour guide. Tawnya’s Winter truffle tours with Duncan Garvey truly do take you straight to the source. Allocated a small group and your own truffle dog, my day spent in the Highlands with Tawnya, Duncan, Utah the dog and a great bunch of local chefs and industry folk was one of good fun, education, the great outdoors, and fantastic food and wine. It won’t be my last. I shall leave you with a few words from one of the world’s great food writers. Happy hunting and joyous eating.
“The French black truffle is considered the finest of the edible fungi and has a place in gastronomy alongside saffron, caviar, foie gras and the finest of wines. Widely considered as the jewel of French cooking prized for its unique flavour and intoxicating aroma. The use of the French black truffle is limited only by the imagination of the chef. It is used as a flavoring (similar to a herb) in a multitude of dishes such as, veal, soup, fish, shellfish, game, rice and salads. “The fact is that the most valuable property of the French black truffle is its capacity to flavour with its perfume any dish which it’s cooked in for some time.” Elizabeth David

Station Master RS 6 Avant
The new wagon from Audi shows that a family car need never be boring. Mike Butler reports.
Price: $225,000 Power: 412kW, 700Nm 0-100km/h: 3.9s U nique Luxur y

C
ome October, there’ll be a new kid on the block at the school pick-up that will be hard to ignore. The third generation RS 6 Avant is big, classy and has alpha-car written all over it. And that’s when it’s standing still. Which is unsurprising considering it’s firstly an Audi and secondly that it comes out of the carmaker’s elite Quattro stable. This is undoubtedly a status car. But the real headliner grabber for this beastie is its engine because it’s the most powerful ever put into an Audi. Following BMW launching its most powerful engine ever – in its M6 Gran Coupe, a few months earlier – the RS 6 Avant has done the same for Audi. Despite having only a modest 4.0 litre engine volume, it’s able to generate a spine-clenching 412 kW and up to 700Nm torque almost from idling. For less tech-minded mortals, what that means is that while this may fit into the station wagon category, it performs like a supercar. For starters its acceleration is startling, from 0-100km in 3.9 seconds. That’s impressive in any vehicle category but for the family car segment it’s nothing short of extraordinary. The message: get one and you need never be beaten for that last remaining car park spot ever again. How Audi has managed to do it can only be put down to one unavoidable fact, clever German engineering. Like lederhosen, pork sausages and Traminer Riesling, the German’s are the world’s leaders in engine technology. Across the board their designers are leading the industry’s charge of making engines smaller and more efficient yet more muscular. This Avant engine, for example, is only a V8 compared to the older version’s engine, which was based on the famed 5-litre V10 Lamborghini Gallordo. That loss of two cylinders means 14kW is gone but the kicker is that it’s 100kg lighter and, with its array of twin turbochargers performanceenhancing gadgetry under the bonnet, it comes out on top. How do they do it? Maybe it’s got something to do with the lederhosen, snags and Riesling but most likely its because they’re German, who collectively are a very smart lot. Regardless, the new Avant will leave most cars for dead from a standing start including the Gallordo. Ouch. It’s not to be said that this is a car for rev-heads, it’s still very much a people-moving vehicle with plenty of room in the back for kids, Labradors or whatever you want – the boot space itself is 585 litres. Mileage-wise it’s hardly a gas-guzzler either 36

Audi RS 6 Avant 4.0 Engine: 4-litre V8 spark-ignition with aluminium engine block and gasoline direct injection, DOHC, exhaust turbocharger, two charge movement flaps, demand-controlled high-pressure and low-pressure fuel system, cylinder on demand, indirect intercooler. Power: 412kw / 5700-6600rpm Torque: 700 Nm / 1750-5500rpm Acceleration: 0-100km/h, 3.9 secs Speed: 250-305km/h depending on the model Fuel consumption: City 13.9l/100km Highway 7.5l/100lm Combined 9.8l/100km
thanks to further clever engineering that sees the engine cut off four of its cylinders when doing normal daily driving. When it’s stopped at the lights too, the engine stops, in order to curtail the thirst of its V8. Not that you’d notice either. The full V8 gallops into action without a hiccup when wanted and, while the stopping of the engine when the car is at rest is a little peculiar at first, it comes on almost telepathically and is a nifty little trick for saving your petrol dollars and the planet if you’re into that sort of thing. Regardless, this is one hell of a handsome car. Its bull nosed front with signature Audi honeycomb grille and snarling headlights make it a head turner from the start. What follows are clear, precise lines that define its muscular stature, with large air inlets, flared wheel arches, oval exhausts and Q-styling cues that, while discrete, totally telegraph its high-performance character. To really make a statement, steer clear of the standard palettes of slates, black and cream paint jobs and consider its attention-grabbing pearl red (Misano Red in Audi-speak) or its regal crystal effect navy blue (Estoril Blue) – both at no extra cost. Inside, there’s exactly what the world has come to expect from Audi who, for the past decade, has held the high ground in styling – one reason why the brand has become the car of choice for 20-something hipsters who can afford it. Bits of knurled silver trim interplay with stitched leather armrests and door grab handles, and standard extras including a TV, sunroof and BOSE stereo are trowelled on. Another nice touch is its soft white mood lighting which creates a properly premium ambience. While this car will put in a sterling performance going around the block to the shops or the club, get it on the open road and its true sports credentials shine. Point it at the horizon and it’s unnervingly quiet (some say, too quiet) engine opens up with satisfying exhaust crackles as you laugh at any speed limit that this country can muster. This is a car designed for Autobahns so the basic model has a top velocity of 250km/h that’s limited by a speed governor. If you’ve got spare change from its price tag of $225,000 (a tidy $30,000 cheaper than the old model), there is a $4900 upgrade that will give you more dynamic steering sports suspension and a top speed of 280km/h. Want more? The additional $25,840 package will get you a top speed of 305km/h. Quite sensibly, that comes with special 20-inch ceramic brakes, handy for stopping this almost 2-tonne bruiser that could theoretically get from Sydney to Brisbane in three hours. Our advice? The standard model with its 250km/h is quite sufficient, at least for Australian roads and speed limits. That comes with giant 19inch brakes (yes, that’s brakes not wheels). That along with Audi’s suite of stability, anti-skid controls and the Quattro all-wheel drive system that makes this big German block of machinery extremely responsive in both handling and stopping. While the Avant may be just a family car, this is very firmly in the exclusive domain of the 400kW+ car club. Don’t be fooled by its station wagon demeanour. Once the household chores are done, this is a performance enhanced athlete made to go fast. It’s one that most certainly can run with the foxes as well as hunt with the hounds. U nique Luxur y

n recent seasons men have once again been made aware of the importance of dressing. They have embraced the classics, taken pride in their wardrobe and put in more effort before stepping out in public. Call it the Mad Men effect if you like, but Miuccia Prada is of the belief that it is possible to observe classic dressing and have a little fun at the same time. Throughout her autumn winter 2013 collection she takes menswear standards and gives them a subtle twist to make them right for right now. Bold injections of colour are the most
obvious. Pops of scarlet are everywhere, from coat collars, to shirting peeking underneath an otherwise staid jumper-and-trousers ensemble. She weaves her rebellious web by playing with proportions throughout. Her Harrington jacket is ultra cropped but the waistband made oversized; she presents a double-breasted jacket but only with two buttons; brogues deploy sky-high soles. All the while, staple pieces like checked shirts and camel coats breed a familiarity that makes everything else seem as though it’s just as it should be.

igour, calm and control. They are the words used by creative director Kris Van Assche himself to describe the intention behind his strong, athletic look for the season. He speaks of the future, of breaking fashion out of its reverie to confront tomorrow with something more than just science fiction fantasy. “It feels time for fashion to stop pressing the standby button and propose something definite,” he declares. And so his suiting takes on technical fabrications, it eschews buttons in favour of zippers and waists are demarcated with nickel belts. Life in Dior Homme’s future is sleek, particularly
the white patent leather jackets, which have a glossy, smartphone sensibility that seems well suited to the world we’re set to inhabit. It’s also somewhat dystopian, the stripped-back colour palette and sharp tailoring evoking a planet of incredibly well dressed clones, occasionally marked for some Orwellian purpose with a mysterious, unexplained symbol. Perhaps that’s where the control comes in? Still, if this is what the future looks like—sharp, masculine and elegant—then who are we to complain?

Calvin Klein Collection I
f this wasn’t creative director Italo Zucchelli’s blue period, then he was certainly putting his own sartorial spin on the whole “50 Shades…” theme. Only rather than grey, it was all manner of navy, cobalt, cornflower, powder… you name it, he had it on the Calvin Klein Collection runway. Often they all made an appearance in the same garment, like pullovers constructed with coloured panels and contrast detail. Other times models strode out in head-to-toe monochromatic uniformity, right down to tonal sunglasses and chunky, matching sandals. The occasional
stripe and alligator skin (on a baby blue sleeveless biker jacket) added a touch of texture to break up the onslaught of blueness. Printed tees and sweaters depicting a cloudy sky ran with the colour theme but still felt like a departure next to the block colour elsewhere. A second print in sunset pinks offered the only respite from the sea of blue. It all played to the brand’s strengths of sporty minimalism, adding a dash of Star Trek futurism into the mix, for summertime blues in the finest sense.

ravel is forever inextricably linked to the Vuitton aesthetic. After all, the fashion house has only created apparel for 15 years, but the hallowed LV monogram has adorned luggage for well over 150. Little wonder, then, that each ready-to-wear collection draws on this heritage. Men’s style director Kim Jones describes each collection as a journey and in this case he means it literally. Travelling to the Kingdom of Bhutan for inspiration he presents a confluence of mountaineering tech, Bhutanese tradition and Himalayan fauna. The snow leopard informs prints on jacquard overcoats and mink-
trimmed collars, while in true adventurer fashion, shearling, parkas, carabiner belts and sturdy-soled shoes are proposed as just the thing for the gentleman climber when infused with the label’s signature luxury. In suiting, checks and stripes pay homage to Bhutan’s national dress while specially commissioned silk and cashmere prints on eveningwear evoke nature at its most weird and wonderful. The iconic Louis Vuitton trunk, the piece that started it all, makes a guest appearance, reinterpreted as a backpack for the stylish man on the move.

Gucci T
he Italian fashion house takes something of a detour through traditional English fabrications this season. It is seen in the reworking of Prince of Wales checks to be both micro and oversized at different junctures along with the embracing of tweed. Gucci being Gucci, it’s not all ‘lord of the manor’, however, with an earthy palette of powdery blue, ochre and parsley green putting things in seventies-style territory, familiar ground for the brand. The silhouettes, too, eschew the usual buttoned-down British country style for a more relaxed, urban-friendly appropriation. Oversized proportions and
hints of cavalry soldier uniforms make an appearance and creative director Frida Giannini even manages to seamlessly meld quintessential English garments with her own Italian sensibility—witness the Montgomery jacket fastened with buttons made from Gucci’s signature bamboo, for instance; or that wet-weather necessity, the Mackintosh, rendered in waterproof wool. Elsewhere, the tuxedo is reinvented and modernised. It retains the formal satin lapels, but the look is relaxed a touch through the use of unconventional fabrics like micro pinstriped tweed, printed silk and Persian lambswool.

Burberry Prorsum S
tepping back from the bright, colourful metallics of the previous season, there was a promise of simplicity in the show’s title: “I ♥ Classics”. The colour palette was a far more conventional mix of camel, khaki, red, black and the timeless Burberry check. And come to think of it, many of the coats appeared almost minimalistic in their detailing. But don’t be under the misapprehension Christopher Bailey was electing to take things easy. Next to the familiar military design cues and traditional British tailoring 56

were elements designed to challenge: trench coats in translucent latex, for instance. Pony skin, miniature studs, love heart prints and a medley of animal patterns were all on call to satisfy those with a need for a little sartorial drama. Heck, even the more conventional looks were subverted with sharply pointed leopard print lace-ups. Bailey may very well love the classics—and a brand like Burberry is built on them—but he’s never one to shy away from mixing things up to make sure that they remain as modern and relevant as possible.

Reds Under The Beds The movie Red Obsession offers wonderful insights into Bordeaux wines, the rise of China’s love affair with them and raises the question: is it a good time to invest in French wine? Mike Butler reports

I
If you’re reading this and haven’t seen Red Obsession, its cinema run has almost certainly ended. But if you love your wine, are a Francophile or want another understanding of the new China, this film is certainly worth sniffing out for a night in front of the telly and a good bottle of red. Intriguingly, its back story has an Australian thread running through it. The film began in 2010 from a friendship struck up between two men at the pointy end of a Qantas flight from Sydney to London: wine auctioneer, Andrew Caillard and filmmaker, Warwick Ross. Ross, who also owns his own winery in Victoria, started listening to the insights Caillard had on the extraordinary prices that the top Bordeaux wines were commanding. As a co-founder of Australia’s leading wine auction house, Langton’s, and as one of Australia’s leading experts on the vineyards of Bourdeaux, Caillard presented a story to Ross so compelling and pivotal in the history of wine that both agreed it had to be told. Red Obsession is that story. The lushly photographed doc is Ross’s directorial debut and is narrated by a high-profile Australian – we’ll let you guess who. It begins with a panoramic tour of France’s Bordeaux region, taking you through its immaculate estates and explaining how this land’s wine became the stuff of legend. We meet chateau owners who live and breathe terroir: Gitanes-puffing Gallic stereotypes such as the chateau owner who charmingly describes his perfectionist tendencies (if a single slightly green grape lurks within a bunch of 250 perfect ones, he will pluck it out) and who then happily reports from wine-stained lips that he has just had a full bottle of wine at lunch. Oh the life! From there the romance of Bordeaux is lauded by critics worldwide and by devotees of their drops. Francis Ford Coppola, for example, recalls the time that he tasted a vintage bottled four years after the French Revolution, and wonders if Thomas Jefferson might have sampled the same wine. But intriguingly, it also charts the roles that the wine critics and luxury branding have played in the skyrocketing prices that indicate these wines have actually become both too expensive and too good an investment to drink. Between 2000 and 2010 the price of top end wines soared 1000 per cent. Since 1982, it has outperformed all other markets including stock, property and gold. It’s sobering stuff. Something akin to a perfect storm hits the Bordeaux wine market with usually competing forces aligning to send the market red hot. Firstly, the Chinese become buyers. Newly rich – very rich – they start not only appearing but U nique Luxur y
70

dominating the traditional bidding in the wine auction houses while focusing on the best and most expensive product. Secondly, the 2009 vintage (which wine critic Oz Clarke describes as “not just a great vintage, a perfect vintage”) appears, followed by another extraordinary growing season in 2010. “Two consecutive years like that are almost unheard of” adds Clarke. Prices go crazy. One collector – a softly spoken Chinese oligarch with a $60 million wine collection – spends $1.5 million for a case of Lafite and it becomes clear that the finest Bordeaux have been elevated to a status and value that makes them actually too valuable to drink, and unaffordable for the traditional Western markets in the US and Europe. Cue much agonising and gnashing of teeth. Meanwhile, the Chinese are creating their own wine industry apace, planting more than 20,000 acres a year. And they’ve been doing staggeringly well – in 2011 a Chinese-made wine won the Gold Trophy at the World Decanter Awards, raising more than a few eyebrows. It’s enthralling stuff, but does the film sacrifice truth for entertainment? We asked Jon Osbeiston, one of Australia’s foremost purveyors of French wine. Osbeiston has been in the industry for 30 years and created the famed Ultimo Wine Centre, known for introducing several excellent French wines, before becoming part of Vintage Cellars earlier this year. 72
w w w.uni quees t at es.c o m. a u
“From what I understand it’s correct,” says Osbeiston, who hasn’t seen the film but corroborates its content, “but prices have certainly come off from those peaks a few years ago.” He points out that China currently has more acres of vineyard than Australia, South Africa and New Zealand combined and their wines are getting better all the time. “They still have a long way to go, but they’re clever and there’s a lot of investment going in,” says Osbeiston. (If you’re interested Chateau Hansen from near the Gobi desert does a “particularly good Cab Sav,” he says. Yours for around $20.) Significantly, he also believes that it’s still a good time to buy French, if only because the Australian dollar is still relatively strong. He also points to the fact that, away from the stratospheric prices of the Hermes-style super wine brands like Lafite and Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (which produce less than 300 cases a year), the French are now consistently making a lot of very good and interesting wines cheaply. “They’re beating us at our own game,” he says. 20 years ago Australia’s reputation was founded on giving the market what they wanted – big bold expressive wines. But palates have changed and “people are looking for something a little more interesting, something with a story and the French are very good at doing that.” If watching Red Obsession whets your appetite for French and Bourdeaux, paradoxically enough, now might be the perfect time to start buying.

When buying any wine, ask yourself this question: do you intend to enjoy it this year or this decade? If it’s to enjoy rather than invest, then search for a Bordeaux that fits one of the following criteria: For tonight: look for one with a bit of age on it, say 3-5 years, sometimes more, from a good vintage (2004, 2007 and 2008) or 10+ years minimum from a great vintage (2005, 2009 and 2010) and a decent chateau. (This is not the budget option). Icons to scout for include Chateau Pavie, Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere, Chateau SmithHaut Lafitte, Chateau La Dominique, Chateau Palmer (Alter Ego) and Chateau Gloria. A wine that hails from a good vintage and a solid, reputable chateau, should be both affordable and enjoyable. Reasonably priced reputable chateaus include St. Martin, Chateau Meyney, Chateau La Cardonne, Chateau Paloumey, Chateau Greysac, Chateau Olivier, La Tour Figeac, Chateau Haut-Surget and Chateau Labegorce. Regional wines from a good vintage, labelled simply with a region like “Pessac-Leognan” or “Fronsac” will cover your bases for quality-driven, reasonably priced wines from Bordeaux. (Fronsac, Pessac-Leognan and Graves are all known for offering solid red wine values). A wine that sources its grapes from the Bordeaux region at large and carries the AOC term “Bordeaux ” or “Bordeaux Supérieur” is generally an entry level wine that is easy to drink early and lies on the cheaper side of the vine. Examples would be Thunevin’s Mauvais Garçon “Bad Boy” Bordeaux, or the Bordeaux Supérieur by de Macard, a Bordeaux blend from Chateau d’ Aiguilhe, or the Bordeaux Supérieur from La Verriere, and Mouton Cadet. or a brand that is so synonymous with its covetable monogram, it’s surprising that the famous design was deliberately excluded from the autumn winter runway. The signature LV canvas has long been shorthand for the craftsmanship of the leathergoods they adorn—but creative director Marc Jacobs decided the time was right for the quality of the workmanship and materials to speak for themselves. In place of the distinctive pattern were posh materials such as marabou, curled goose feather and waxed crocodile. Which all played perfectly into the
boudoir glamour infusing the rest of the collection. Silky, ultra feminine negligee dresses and pyjama sets evoke languid days clad in lingerie. Girlie embellishments like lace and feather embroidery abound and on pieces that co-opt menswear tailoring such adornments serve to soften the masculinity. It’s all as though the Vuitton woman plans to step back from her social commitments and swan around her maison for the duration of the season… although should she need to pop out, she’ll simply throw on her husband’s coat and still look utterly fabulous.

Christian Dior R
elatively new to the job—this is his second ready-to-wear season at the helm—Raf Simons is exploring his place within the French fashion house. For this collection he turns to history, seeking to draw parallels between himself and the label’s namesake. Both men, as it turns out, share a connection to art: Dior to surrealism, Simons to pop art and the latter exploits this link to great effect. Collaborating with the Andy Warhol Foundation, Simons uses the artist’s formative hand drawn work from the 1950s throughout the collection, in prints and embroidery, at the same time
revealing a little known side to the artist’s work. In referencing Monsieur Dior’s early connection to Salvadore Dali, surrealist touches infuse the collection through asymmetrical silhouettes and kinked heels on boots and pumps. All this looking to the past naturally brings references to iconic Dior design cues. There’s the classic Bar jacket, reborn as a pants suit and the houndstooth print. By taking elements of what has been and creating what will be, Simons seems to understand his place at Dior all too well.

Calvin Klein Collection
C
onsidering this is creative director Francisco Costa’s Resort 2014 collection, it’s fitting that he has taken something of a holiday from his usual muted aesthetic, introducing rich swathes of jewel colour. Ordinarily Costa doesn’t divert far from a neutral palette to accentuate the pared-back signature of the brand. The minimalistic lines were still there, of course, as were the requisite neutrals, all executed with distinctly seventiesinspired undertones that hark back to the brand’s seminal years over four decades ago. The influence is apparent in loose, wide-legged pants, cowboy
style chestnut suede and strappy wooden sandals and platform heels. Another past era heavily referenced through the liberal use of sporty, cropped knits is 1990s vintage Klein, a time when every self-respecting supermodel was bearing her midriff in the label’s wares. Leather is key for the season, with ostrich and cowhide alongside the aforementioned suede finishes, bringing texture to skirts and collarless coats. Simplicity of silhouette is a hallmark as always, highlighted with the odd feature buckle, zip detail or loosely cinched belt to add a utilitarian vibe.

Burberry Prorsum W
ith a show sweetly titled “Trench Kisses”, one might expect a romantic celebration of Burberry Prorsum’s signature coat. Romance was certainly present in pretty, love-heart printed dresses, blouses and, yes, trench coats. But when those same, dainty love hearts were emblazoned on panties peeking beneath sheer latex skirts, any pretense of innocence slipped quickly away. Unsurprising then, that Christopher Bailey’s muse for the season was sixties strumpet Christine Keeler, who simultaneously seduced a British parliamentarian, a drug dealer and a Russian spy with
scandalous results. Hence, it wasn’t so much about the trench itself but the dangers that lie beneath, which are much easier to spot when adorned with panels of that see-through rubber. Animalistic instincts let loose in a veritable safari of skins and prints: leopard, pony, zebra, python and giraffe. Sure, the shapes themselves were relatively demure: think pencil skirts, shift dresses and angora sweaters. But anchored with tough detailing like metallic gold bars, leather halter necks and gold rivets driven through fringed leather, it’s clear the Burberry woman is not one to be trifled with this season.

Chanel A
s if it’s not enough that Karl Lagerfeld is one of the most prolific fashion designers around, somehow he manages to fit so much into one Chanel show, often into just one garment. The 80 looks alone would be enough to send lesser designers into palpitations, let alone ensembles with the depth of texture and detail apparent in this collection: embroidered tulle flowers, webbed knits, metallic-tinged tweed, strips of patent leather. Perhaps all his energy went into the textiles because the colours were mostly quite sombre, with a Little Pink Riding
Hood in classic Chanel tweed the brightest spark of the day. Thigh-high patent boots anchored each look and to showcase them to maximum advantage, hemlines were high with flirty skater skirts and form-fitting minis in abundance. Even when he opted for longer hemlines, Lagerfeld chose cut out front panels and unzip coat dresses to ensure maximum exposure, the notable exception being shin-grazing knit dresses. But really, the staid colour palette was precisely the thing to keep the focus on the intricacy and beauty of the many textures within.

Gucci I
t seems to be stating the patently obvious to opine that the Gucci woman “seduces with her dangerous femininity”—it’s widely understood by those with even a cursory interest in fashion that where Gucci goes, sex appeal follows. But designer Frida Giannini, herself, describes the aesthetic as such. So, even when attempting to bring a couture sensibility to the collection through demure silhouettes, she can’t help but contrast them with fetishistic design elements inspired by controversial 1970s British pop artist Allen Jones. Hence those demure shapes are overtly body conscious
and accentuated by plunging necklines, sheer panelling and slit skirts. It’s unapologetically ladylike, with little of the masculine tailoring often explored by the fashion house, veering into femme fatale territory through accessories such as sharp high heels and pink python boots, finished with fishnet stockings. Not to mention the collection boasts liberal lashings of leather, which is always the fastest way to do away with a good girl image (just ask Sandy from Grease). But, really, who would expect, or indeed want, anything less from Gucci? U nique Luxur y
