The site is located at Meru, Klang, Selangor. Meru is home to Top Glove which is the nation’s largest producer of latex gloves. Numerous small-medium industrial complexes are located in Meru which is less than 10km from the heart of Klang. This town is currently losing its prominence, especially with the different usage of the land, mixing of industrial, education institution, rural residential, modern housing, commercial building and more

There is a diverse situation found in the Meru. We can see there is a lot of different cultural background of people stay in the Meru and they are less social interaction with each other and cause of loss of socio-culture in between them.

To make the change of segregation situation, I tend to create an interactive platform in order to merge the fragments from the different cultural backgrounds of people, make them adapt and know each other well

WHAT I WANT TO DEFINE MERU? HOW I WANT TO DEFINE IT?

In Meru, the variant of land used with the rapid development of the industrial area, migrant communities, urbanization and more which make the Meru crowded. To redefine Meru, I plan to create sense of belongings to make people have a special immersive memory to the Meru and create a strong impression when arrive at Meru

In the conversation with the Meru of YB, I get to understand the importance of living and environment quality in Meru and the effects on it on the Meru communities. For example, littering, the living condition of migrant workers, environmental pollution caused by factories, and the most important one COVID-19 that affects everyone’s life in this current situation. To improve the living and environmental quality, education is very important. Sharing the knowledge to the people by organising some campaign or event. At the same time, to raise the awareness of the people to the current issue. By knowing each other well, people can also practice the unity of pace so that we can overcome a lot of issues together.

There is some issue of lack of buffer around the industrial area. The boring face of factory make the environment become high depression. In Meru, there are many rural local farmers which live in the traditional kampung house and do a lot of farming and planting, like banana trees, coconut trees, chilli padi, vegetables and even feeding some chicken. Some market space is necessary for them to sell what they farm and plant so that they can earn some expense to achieve self-sufficient

There is a lot of education institution around provide to the local residents. There is a lack of a cluster of space for the teenagers. Probably they need some break time and fun time after their schoolings such as bola sepak, leisure time, or market to have some snack.

W O R K E R

There is numerous factory located around the site, therefore there are a lot of migrant workers appear around in the town. They are living in a compact environment due to the high density of living spaces. While they still need to off to work repeatedly every day and work under pressure in the respective factory workstation. Hence, most of them preferred to wander outside before they went to sleep to enjoy their personal time and space. However, the issue of littering is very serious in Meru, therefore, educational institutions are welcoming to organize the campaign to remind the importance of a healthy to educate foreigners. I believe that it’s challenging to make changes of human behaviour, so the action of promoting like giving a cup of milo or snack for those who join the events might be able to encourage people to start the action

MODEL

The conceptual model illustrates the current situation of segregation between the rural farmers, teenagers and migrant workers with the activities, interests and existing issues.

In Meru, every user has their activities, interests, lifestyle and behaviour. They tend to lose the identity of Meru and the unity of the space. In fact, they actually need each other to survive. For example, some rural residents do plant some banana trees, coconut trees or feeding chickens in order to make food, sell them and earn money. Some other local residences and workers might need to have their breakfast before going to work and therefore they could buy from the farmers

In Meru town, there are consisting of many different types of zoning, such as residential, education, industrial and religion. With the issue of segregation in Meru, they have their own daily life which less interrupts with each other. As the combination of their different activities, lifestyle, interest and culture, Meru form a multicultural space which makes them live better together by knowing each ther. By choosing Site A, I would like to form an intersection point coming from each zone and form a common space or interactive space. Iconic food in Meru would be the way to attract them to visit the space, adapt in and form the unity community.

There is a lot of trees plant on the site which are proposed to be relocated to be covered the building to form a hidden gem of the place. The tree could make the mystery of the space and curiosity from people. Trees also act as a buffer layer to diffuse the noise from the high traffic road, school bell and nearby events. At the same time, it improves the air and water quality of the space by planting more trees around the site.

Throughout the analysis, the users are mostly using a bicycle or walk to move. Therefore, a pedestrian walkway is required to secure the safety of the people especially when the children walk across the main road in Meru and the migrant workers. The proposed pedestrian walkway is necessary to lower the risk of the users and providing convenient access to the building without any needs of the vehicle.

C I R C U L A T I O N

Due to the heavy node, a vehicle approach is recommended to propose at the opposite side of the junction and the school to avoid heavy traffic and crowded. Especially during morning and noon, the school area will be in heavy traffic. The mosque nearby is also one of the reasons for high traffic occurs in the Jalan Meru. Vehicle circulation needs to be well planned to keep the road inflow

IMMERSIVE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE IN

XIANGYANG,

CHINA

JOY TOWN We envisioned Joy Town as a place where there are always unexpected visual sensory experiences. Waterscape and streets create a traditionally-inspired village streetscape, and a three-dimensional design plan allows you to step onto rooftops and explore unpaved paths. We wanted to allow people to experience the lost city of Xiang Yang through its distinct environmental elements."

Make use of unique and dramatic architecture elements

Rescale them due to different functionality of space and relationship of space

Pop in and out becoming a characteristic of the joy town

DISTINCT ENVIRONMENT ELEMENT The design, based on material, shape, and layout, generates a particular visual result. Merging traditional and contemporary building materials and techniques, the façade produces a dramatic effect. Moreover, inspired by the silhouette of Xiangyang's traditional sloping houses, slanted frames are incorporated into the building's facade as the entrance to retail stores, commercial displays, and terraces. The abstract sloping roofs create a staggering visual effect that unifies the overall structure.

Make use of different type of local tradition architecture element into the building

Puzzle it

Apply the rich local tradition architecture element on to the exterior

THE ALLEY Capturing the traditional town through visual language, spatial scale, and spatial relationship, Aedas created a development that reinterprets streets and alleyways. The main street is situated on the west to exploit the wider and open view, while a second narrower street is situated on the east. “The lower floor will comprise of food and snack stalls while the second floor will connect to the main street and commercial and office space on the northerly through a connecting corridor”.

The wood frame structure mimics the vertical spatial experience of a Kampung spirit from which food is hung to grow and dry. A circulation platform in the middle of the building creates a working space where the community can visually and physically collect the food. Local foods make up the elevation of the building as people see the food forest floating above the landform.

TECHN OLOGY

The latest 21st century generation of layered Green Roof systems. Such systems are installed directly on the roof and always from wall-to-wall for the best protection and function. The flexibility of Monolithic Platform-Based Green Roof systems is far beyond any other systems. Nevertheless, it combines century old traditions with modern requirements.

The material used of the building is polycarbonate which allow partial light penetrates into the space.

Cross ventilation allow cold air to enter from the bottom and hot air out from the sky roof.

The height of the green roof avoids the plantation destroyed by the flash flood and able to cooling down the building at the same time.

Sky roof allow the natural sunlight diffuse into the space.

The sewerage system is one stack system which the vent pipe and soil pipe is combined in one single pipe, where one is above roof level, while the other is connected to the inspection chamber/manhole, in the end connected to the existing main sewer by the public works. The distance between the manhole was 10 metres which has achieve the min. requirements of 30 metres distance. The pipes run underground are mainly made up of UPVC which is incredibly resistance to chemical erosion and has smoother inner walls that help to encourage water flow.
