Montessori: a World of Achievements Text by Chiara Piroddi - Illustrations by Agnese Baruzzi The series “Montessori, a world of achievements” is a collection of texts for children that contain playing activities aimed at encouraging the development of the main cognitive skills, such as the recognition of numbers, shapes and colors. They are designed and built according to the specific educational and pedagogical approach of the Montessori Method. The structure of the activities suggested in the texts develops around some fundamental Montessori principles: - the content of the games follows a progressive complexity, to allow the child to become gradually familiar with it; - each activity has 3 progressive stages of learning: 1. presentation of the material through senses, 2. recognition of the learning object material, 3. reenactment of the material; - in each activity the child can directly control his mistakes, so that he can realize by himself the accuracy of his work; - the adult has a role of assistance and introduction to the various activities but the child can play independently the games; - handling and practical experience have a central role: often is required you to glue stickers, cut, draw and finger paint.

“The dance was boring, just as I had feared,” Jo thought. “What I could never have imagined, though, is the bizarre way in which I met my best friend: Laurie!”
When they arrived at the dance, the March sisters parted: Meg and Amy were immediately asked to dance, while Beth was delighted to watch the pianist play. For her part, Jo, when she saw a young redheaded boy approach to ask her to dance, ran to hide behind a curtain. Raising the fabric, however, she saw that someone else had had the same idea: the young Laurence also wore a bored and awkward expression. “Excuse me, I didn’t know that this curtain was already occupied,” muttered Jo, but the boy burst out laughing at her quip and Jo suddenly felt completely at ease and became once more the person she usually was: cheerful and talkative. “You’re our neighbor, aren’t you? You’re old Mr. Laurence’s grandson, Laurie! Oh, you have no idea how we enjoyed the banquet he arranged for us after the Christmas show.” Laurie’s shyness also disappeared, and soon the two young people found themselves talking and laughing together like old friends. Laurie talked about his studies and his travels, and finally asked, “Do you like dancing?” “Oh, it’s not for me. I only dance when there’s plenty of space, otherwise I always manage to tread on someone’s toes.” “Well, back there there’s an empty room: would you like to join me?” In this way, the evening passed in a flash also for Jo. Next morning, she woke up in good spirits, even though what was awaiting her was a rather tiring day at the side of her Aunt March.

Classic mythology might very well strike fear into young readers. The characters of such a distant world time-wise, a world that mirrors the beliefs and traditions that have not existed for many centuries, might seem to be a diďŹƒcult subject for a children’s book. But this one refutes this opinion by presenting in a humorous, original and modern key some stories about the principal creatures in ancient Greek mythology – Cerberus, the Sphinx, the Sirens and Centaurs, the Cyclops and Medusa, to mention only few. Thanks to their modern and unique style, the charming, colorful and reassuring illustrations that Marisa Vestita created especially for this book interact perfectly with the short and simple texts that introduce young readers to mythology. They will discover a world that is ancient but really not so different from our own as might seem at first sight. The book also has a digital expansion, thanks to a downloadable APP for an interactive experience full of games, activities, and extra content and projected to guarantee more and more fun.
