CHARACTERISTICS: It looks like a little man, but much smaller, it has skin that ranges from brown to red and it has pointy ears, nose and chin. Not only is it nasty, but also diabolically cunning. CHARACTERISTICS: Ugly and inelegant, it has an enormous, warty nose and a bristly tail. It has a violent character and loves playing nasty tricks on people. It has considerable strength, but one weak point: light. If exposed to sunlight, it’s immediately transformed into stone. But let me tell you, don’t get too close as it really stinks!

HOW TO BEAT IT: If you see a small, strange colored creature that promises to give you that toy you’ve been hoping for providing that you follow it, don’t trust it! It could be a goblin trying to trick you. It will never confront you alone. You would just need to push it over! But if you give in to temptation and follow it, you might find yourself faced with an army of goblins, and in that case there is nothing you can do but call for help.

HOW TO BEAT IT: You will have to focus on cunning and not on strength. It’s definitely stronger than you and no weapon can do much against its robust body. You need to take advantage of its “Achilles’ heel”: sunlight. If you meet one by day, run as fast as you can to an opening in the forest. If it’s brave enough to follow you, it will immediately turn into stone! If you see one at night, take a torch with you. It won’t turn into stone, but it will certainly run away.

Magellano nel 1519 propose al re Carlo I di Spagna un’impresa unica: fare il giro intorno al mondo. Bisognava arrivare nel nuovo continente, costeggiarlo verso sud e trovare un passaggio per continuare a occidente fino a raggiungere l’oceano indiano. Magellano partì con 5 navi e 250 uomini e incontrò fin dall’inizio numerosi ostacoli: prima l’ammutinamento dell’equipaggio, poi difficoltà nella navigazione e l’imprevisto abbandono di una delle navi. Riuscì però a trovare un passaggio a sud dell’America che adesso si chiama proprio Stretto di Magellano. Oltrepassò l’oceano che chiamò Pacifico perché non si dimostrò difficile da attraversare. Giunse infine nelle isole Filippine, lì gli indigeni ostili, durante una rivolta lo uccisero. Dopo la morte di Magellano la spedizione continuò a subire perdite e soltanto una delle cinque navi riuscì a tornare in Spagna, nel 1522 dopo più di due anni dalla partenza.

IL CRISTIANESIMO

Non capitava di rado che le pessime condizioni di vita sulle navi causassero malumori fra l’equipaggio che poteva protestare fino ad ammutinarsi, cioè rifiutare il comando. Gli ammutinati rischiavano la pena di morte. Magellano con fermezza riuscì a respingere il tentativo di rivolta.

Per compiacere i sovrani e la chiesa i navigatori spesso cercavano di convertire gli indigeni al cristianesimo. Fu proprio durante uno di questi tentativi che nell’isola di Machtan, Magellano fu ucciso.

Dian Fossey e i gorilla

Dian Fossey è stata una naturalista americana che amava gli animali. Dedicò 20 anni della sua vita allo studio dei gorilla, e per la loro tutela, fondò un centro di Ricerca nella foresta equatoriale del Ruanda.

Si tratta di una sottospecie di leone, ormai relegata nelle foreste di tek del Parco nazionale indiano del Gir. E’ un po’ più piccolo del suo parente africano e ha la criniera meno folta, ma le abitudini sono simili. Negli ultimi anni vari progetti di conservazione sono riusciti a farne aumentare leggermente il numero.

Sebbene il nome possa trarre in inganno, non si tratta di un orso, bensì è un parente stretto del procione americano. Come il panda gigante si nutre prevalentemente di bambù e vegetali, e presenta un falso pollice per la presa dei germogli. Vive sulle montagne di Nepal, Cina, Tibet.

carpa koi La carpa koi è considerata in Giappone un simbolo di ricchezza, amore e fortuna. Fu selezionata dagli allevatori nell’antica Cina in diverse varietà per farne un pesce ornamentale. Oggi è presente in tantissimi stagni, fontane e laghetti privati di tutto il mondo. La carpa koi risulta essere anche il pesce più longevo, con un esemplare record arrivato all’età di 226 anni.

Il suo impegno contro bracconieri che stavano riducendo drasticamente il numero di gorilla, ne causò la morte: fu infatti assassinata ignoti nel 1985.

I gorilla sono molto intelligenti e comunicano tra loro attraverso posture del corpo, ma anche emettendo suoni differenti. Si cibano di grandi quantità di vegetali, frutta e foglie, e sono capaci di costruire un nido per la notte, sul terreno o in cima agli alberi.

Trascorreva molte ore al giorno in loro compagnia, osservando il loro comportamento e arrivando a farsi accettare come un membro del gruppo.

SPAGHETTI al pomodoro

Una volta, e soprattutto al Sud ancora oggi, le mamme si ritrovavano a fine estate a preparare la passata di pomodoro da conservare per l’inverno. I BLINIS I blinis sono delle piccole frittelle simili a pancake, che vengono servite con panna acida e caviale, o salmone. Per prepararle sguscia 3 uova separando i tuorli dagli albumi. Mescola i tuorli con 150 ml di panna liquida e 250 g di farina. Unisci poco lievito di birra, 150 g di farina di grano saraceno, 100 ml di latte, 120 g di burro fuso e poco sale, e per ultimi gli albumi montati a neve. Lascia che la pastella riposa per 20 minuti, poi cuocila a piccole cucchiaiate in frittelle di circa 10 cm di diametro.

Many bees, among which the well-known honey bee, are social insects, that is, they live in communities and share the same nest, called hive. Within the group there exists a strict subdivision of tasks and each member works for the well-being of all.

Pollination is the process that enables plants to be fertilized. Pollen from one flower unites with the egg cell of another flower and fecundates it, giving origin to the fruit that will contain the seeds necessary for the birth of new generations of plants, guaranteeing the continuity of the species.

THE QUEEN She is the largest. She lays the eggs and therefore is the mother of all the bees in the hive; she coordinates the work within the group. She has a rather long life, approximately 4 years.

8. COMMUNICATION

Worker bees represent almost the entirety of the beehive population. Like the queen, they are all females, but they are sterile.
