AL FRESCO - WINTERIZE DOWNTOWN SAN JOSE Team: Brian Corbett, Corinda Wong, Gabriela Molina, Daniel Glaessl, David Richey Architect: Gensler Location: San Jose, CA Typology: Public Businesses in the US are moving outdoor to comply with health guidelines because of COVID-19. The City of San Jose implimented the Al Fresco initiative to close off streets in four big neighborhoods to allow for more public outdoor spaces for restaurants. We were asked to think of creative solutions with low budget for what would happen to the outdoor dining experience when winter time comes. Protections against rain, wind, and cold are the key goals of this study.

SITE OVERVIEW

CA-87
Multifunctional programmatic zones are established along the banks of the Guadalupe River to serve the community. On the West side of the site, closer to the SAP Center is a rideshare drop-off and open sports fields for public use. On the East side, a landmark is erected as a central gathering space with an open ampitheater below. Adjacent to the landmark are outdoor marketplace, educational pavilions, and a WiFi forest. These two main sides of the site are connected via a wide pedestrain/bicyclist bridge.

N Autumn St.
All paths in the park lead to a point of unity, the landmark, a light tower. The light tower is an assembly of two parts; the Heart and the Shell. The Heart serves as a light box being lifted up in the air by the Shell, a light framework that acts as the structure. The spiralling skin of the Heart reveals the winding staircase with viewing platforms overlooking the site and city.

Key programmatic points are placed on both sides of the site to serve as generator locations of lines. With a grasshopper script, these lines follow the logic of magnetic fields, being pushed and pulled from designated pin-points. Magnetic fields are then used to highlight pathways between points and form zones for potential programs.
Programmatic areas are then overlayed on top of the magnetic fields. The programs are chosen purposfully to create spaces for public gatherings, interaction of all ages, and engagement to nature.

LIGHT BOX - THE HEART
FRAMEWORK - THE SHELL
CIRCULATION - THE JOURNEY
The form of the Heart is based on rotating squares. This twisting motion allows the skin to be articulated two different ways.
The light framework is based on the expanded grid allowing the structure to be at one corner and more open moving outwards.
Below is an ampitheater that serves as a public plaza. Above is the tower that serves as a big monumental stair and platforms for special events with a big viewing deck at the top.
