COMMUNITY Craft Brewing Education Center Roanoke, Virginia
4th Year Integrative Design Studio Instructor: Kevin Jones Spring 2018 The project is designed for the Craft Brewing Resource Alliance, a non-profit educational group dedicated to the training of master brewers, and the art and science of beer. The building is located in downtown Roanoke and the programs are broken down into 3 sections, which are commercial operations, education and research, and residency. The design of the brewery focuses on exposing the steel structure as well as showing off the local material characters which are brick and mural walls.

A big mass is pulled up at the back of the site, which holds all the big programs such as the brewing hall, taprooms, apartments, and a test field.
A cantilevered mass is pushed out to create a gathering space down below. This mass holds the administrative section of the building.
Through addition and subtraction of masses, more programs are put into the building.
The steel structure is put in place, which defines the order of the spaces inside.
Bricks and concrete masonry units are filled in as the exterior and interior walls of the building.
Windows are placed to allow sunlight and views into the interior spaces.
Sections of the building are painted with murals to bring in the character of Roanoke.

LANDSCAPE Pizolhut
Bad Ragaz, Switzerland 4th Year Architecture Studio Instructor: Steve Thompson Fall 2017 Riva Located off a hiking trail on Mount Pizol, this Swiss alpine hut serves as a temporary shelter for hikers and can hold up to fifteen people. The building sits on two main axes, one is perpendicular to the slope of the landscape and the other is the north-south. The location is specifically chosen so that the north-south axis gives a direct view to the lake.

IV. PRIVACY Montessori School + Apartments Staunton, Virginia
3rd Year Architecture Studio Instructor: Bill Galloway Spring 2017 This mixed-use building is located in downtown Staunton, a small town in Virginia. The program includes a Montessori school and apartments for the locals. The main concept of this project is to differentiate the two programs while having an element, the library, tying the programs together. The first floor of the building is the school and the second and third are residential. The library, cantilevered across the building, also overlooks the intersection of the town, framing the character view of Staunton.

3rd Year Competition Partner: Andy Merida Fall 2016 This project is located in the middle of the residential neighborhood of the Back Bay area. The site has an alley along the side which cannot be built on and the architecture cannot go higher than the nearby buildings. The program includes two rooms for the performance art, a staff office, a meeting room, restrooms, and an art storage. The main concept of this project is to contrast the architecture from the rest of the neighborhood by stopping the rhythm of the building bays with a monumental mass and focus more on challenging the traditional brick construction and its materiality.

The layout of the building is fairly simple. The long, 4-story tall hallway leads to the back of the building, which has an entrance to the lobby with a large atrium. The atrium features a skylight that brings down natural light to all floors. The stairs and circulation paths are on the solid structural side wall. The enormous frosted glass wall also softens in the light from the side facade.

VI. ORDER Harding Avenue Elementary Addition Blacksburg, VA
3rd Year Architecture Studio Instructor: Bill Galloway Fall 2016 This project is to create a canopy in front of the school to protect the students from the rain. The structure should extend from the entrance of the school to both the bus stop and the nearby parent pick-up area. The architectural concept for this project is to create module units that can be shifted to create moments of entry and hangout spaces along with giving the students a tunnel-like experience while walking through the canopy.

The form of the concrete shell follows the intention of bringing light to the entrance at the corner and sloping the roof down to reveal the mural behind it. The density of the wood members follows the privacy levels of the interior space.

VIII. TEXTURE Residential Cabins
Villa La Angostura, Argentina 2nd Year Architecture Studio Instructor: Paola Zellner Bassett Fall 2015 This project located in a forest in Argentina with a 30ยบ slope. The slope faces North and site has averagely six inches of snow during winter. The program houses four people total, two in each cabin, with a viewing deck in the middle. The focus of my architecture is on the expression of the projection of the slope. The roof and the arched columns follow the curvature of the landscape.
