LANDSCAPE Pizolhut
Bad Ragaz, Switzerland 4th Year Architecture Studio Instructor: Steve Thompson Fall 2017 Riva Located off a hiking trail on Mount Pizol, this Swiss alpine hut serves as a temporary shelter for hikers and can hold up to fifteen people. The building sits on two main axes, one is perpendicular to the slope of the landscape and the other is the north-south. The location is specifically chosen so that the north-south axis gives a direct view to the lake.

II. COMMUNITY Craft Brewing Education Center Roanoke, Virginia
4th Year Integrative Design Studio Instructor: Kevin Jones Spring 2018 The project is designed for the Craft Brewing Resource Alliance, a non-profit educational group dedicated to the training of master brewers, and the art and science of beer. The building is located in downtown Roanoke and the programs are broken down into 3 sections, which are commercial operations, education and research, and residency. The design of the brewery focuses on exposing the steel structure as well as showing off the local material characters which are brick and mural walls.

A big mass is pulled up to hold all the big programs such as the brewing hall, taprooms, apartments, and a test field.
A cantilevered mass is pushed out to create a gathering space down below.
Through addition and subtraction of masses, more programs are put into the building.
The steel structure is put in place, which defines the order of the spaces inside.
Bricks and concrete masonry units are filled in as the exterior and interior walls of the building.
Windows are placed to allow sunlight and views into the interior spaces.
Sections of the building are painted with murals to bring in the character of Roanoke.

III. PRIVACY Montessori School + Apartments Staunton, Virginia
3rd Year Architecture Studio Instructor: Bill Galloway Spring 2017 This mixed-use building is located in downtown Staunton, a small town in Virginia. The program includes a Montessori school and apartments for the locals. The main concept of this project is to differentiate the two programs while having an element, the library, tying the programs together. The first floor of the building is the school and the second and third are residential. The library, cantilevered across the building, also overlooks the intersection of the town, framing the character view of Staunton.

IV. DETAIL Footbridge
Riva San Vitale, Switzerland 4th Year Architecture Studio Instructor: Steve Thompson Fall 2017 Riva This footbridge is designed for the town of Riva San Vitale, which has a big demographic of elderly people. The Idea is to bring the crossing plane down close to the ground while keeping the identity of Swiss materials and construction.
