The Brief - Brain Puzzle

Using information researched for dissertation topic, come up with a synthesized practical outcome. Using the theoretical knowledge gained throughout the research project, design a brain game that will get pupils engaged and thinking creatively and logically.

Design Outcome must be interactive and suitable for Primary School Aged Children. Consider the limitations surrounding designing for the target audiene.

Research & Preparation The majority of the design outcome will be informed by research carried out throughout research project. Further Research could take the form of looking at designing for children and any other visual research.

Concept & Research

Design Aims Interactive Engaging Eye Catching Informative Suitable for Early Years of Primary Education Researching into brain games led me into finding out more about the left-side/right-side of brain theory. As there are already many different brain training games out there for children, I decided I wanted to design something much more innovative and less two dimensional. I felt it was important to try and make the game suitable for developing all the different types of learning model - auditory, kinesthetic and visual.

The aim of the game is an aid to teaching and learning about symbolism and the left/right brain theory in an interactive and exciting way. The game will also encourage teamwork and logical and creative thinking. The game would be used by a teacher and small team of children as an aid to learning lessons about symbolism, representation and right/left brain theory.

Development Symbolism

The Jigsaw Puzzle is quite challenging for children but working together as a team, using the pictures provided they should be able to complete it before progressing to the symbol stage of the game. The jigsaw puzzle is laser cut out from 6mm wood which is quite thick and blocky which means it should be strong and the pieces are quite large which makes it suitable for the target audience.

Symbolism

Materials Used:

The filled in symbols represent the characteristics of the left hand side of the brain. This represents logical, rational and analytical thinking. Symbols used are ones which children can relate to and understand. The right hand side of the brain represents creative, random and holistic thinking.

Wood, Paper, Felt Spray Paint & Stencil The varying textures should also be engaging for children

Gather a small team of children and get them to work together, using the image of the brain provided to put the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together. After informing them of the Left Brain/ Right Brain Theory get them to identify each symbol which is a characteristic of either one side of the brain. Using the velcro tabs attach the symbols to the correct side of the brain.
