Illustration Julia Pott is a British illustrator and animator living in Brooklyn NY. Her work often features personified characters.
JUlia Pott
Illustration has been a strong and keen interest of mine throughout the full three years at LCA. I discovered Julia Potts illustrations in first year and instantly loved the strange quirkiness about them. At this point I hadn’t seen much illustration in this style and related illustration more to children’s story books. Julia Potts artwork really opened my eyes to the world of illustration.
Gemma Correll Gemma Correll is a British cartoonist, illustrator and writer. Her drawings are supported by humorous words and her drawing style has been described by people as ‘looking like a 5 year old’s drawing.’
Seeing these almost imperfect yet perfect drawings also helped me to understand that illustration doesn’t have to be drawings which represent the object like a photograph. Inspiration from Gemma Correll had a great influence in my illustration style.
Marta AltEs Marta AltÊs is an illustrator and graphic designer who has studied in Barcelona and England. She has worked as a graphic designer in Barcelona and a children’s book illustrator in England.
Seeing this kind of mixed media illustrations encouraged me to introduce different mediums into my work. This helps to give it more depth and make it more interesting for the viewer.
Sarah Walton Sarah Walton makes embroidered illustrations by using her sewing machine to create drawings with thread. She adds bursts of colour with patterned fabric and the finished images depict characters from every day life.
Embroidered drawing is something which I experimented with in the DIY crafts brief and really enjoyed it. The effect of using thread rather than pen or pencil looks really visually interesting. In the future I would like to experiment working with this medium more as I already often work with fabric based crafts, it would work well with my practice.
Surface Design
Elizabeth Caldwell
Elizabeth Caldwell is a freelance designer and illustrator with a focus on surface design.
Hand-rendered type is also something which I love to look at and to produce myself. The bright colours used here are very uplifting, along with the encouraging quotes, it is hard for me not to feel inspired by these pieces.
Craft Throughout third year, Craft has became a big part of my practice. Being able to write our own briefs gave me the freedom to introduce this way of working.
Color And Cream
These beautiful crocheted doilies and plant place mat images are taken from the blog ‘Color and Cream, Create and Dream.’ I found the blog through pinterest which is a great source for finding crafty inspiration. Crocheting is a skill which I picked up on last summer and look forward to building on those skills this summer. Crocheting I have done is featured in the ‘Craft is Fabric’ Zine designed by Emily and I.
Weaving Weaving is so simple yet the results can be so different every time. Once again, researching for the DIY crafts brief ignited my interest within this craft and now I’m hooked.
“Maryanne Moodie took up weaving in 2010 as a creative outlet. She has completed commissions, collections and projects for commercial and private clients, drawing from her background in art, styling, teaching, fashion and costume. Her woven tapestries reference contemporary art, couture, architecture and her nostalgia of days gone by with new and surprising results. In 2013, she relocated her studio from Melbourne to New York, where she continues to grow her work.”
60’s & Flower Power The colourful sixties has been a big inspiration for me, especially in the second year when I focused my COP module on the sixties and the sexual revolution. The bright colours and swirling, melting looking typography is what I love looking at the most from this era. The family dog poster collection were designed by 4 main designers working in San Francisco producing psychedelic posters for musical events at places like the Avalon Ballroom.
Family Dog
Anti Vietnam war, Peaceful Protestors The young protestors of the sixties inspire me because they tried to make a difference against the bad that was going on in the world.
I discovered these images when researching about the Sexual Revolution and went on to create my own protest signs surrounding the theme of free love and feminism.
