AT NIKKI BEACH

Last summer, Nikki Beach took over the rooftop of the Fairmont Monte Carlo for what was supposed to be a pop-up location. This pairing was so successful —and so fun—that we’ve decided to make Monaco a permanent part of the Nikki Beach family. Nikki Beach Monaco will reopen at the Fairmont Monte Carlo on April 30, 2016, in time for the start of season—including the Formula 1 Grand Prix, Do you ski? Do you love Nikki Beach? Hey guys! Looking for a cool pair of swim trunks? Nikki Beach has partnered with lifestyle swimsuit maker Vilebrequin for an exclusive collection of stylish swimwear for men. This colorful collaboration began in our lifestyle boutiques in St. Tropez and Marbella during the summer of 2015. This winter, St. Barth will sell the branded beachwear—with more of our locations coming soon. For men, this no-hassle, one-stop shopping experience means that looking good on the beach is as easy as 1-2-3!

Our long awaited foray into the Middle East is finally here! An urban oasis, Nikki Beach Dubai is located on the Arabian Gulf on Pearl Jumeira Island with panoramic views of Downtown Dubai and the cityscape, including the Burj Khalifa. At the beach club, guests can enjoy signature Nikki Beach hospitality, entertainment, cuisine and impeccable service from day to night. Satine by Nikki Beach, a VIP restaurant and lounge serving dinner seven nights a week, is also part of the two-story property. Look for the second phase of the project, Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai, to debut in 2016 with hotel suites, villas, more restaurants, Nikki Spa by ESPA and Tone Fitness Center.

Q: What’s the best part about being a DJ at Nikki Beach?

A: “Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Queen, Sly Stone, M.A.W, Michel Legrand.”

A: “Playing music in beautiful places like St. Tropez and St. Barth. And the big events like the Cannes Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival.”

A: “Having the chance to travel and play in different locations all around the world, meeting all kinds of people and having the power to bring people together and make them dance as if it’s their last dance.”

Q: How do you keep up with the latest music trends? A: “On the net, but I want to keep the way I do it a secret.” Q: How has technology changed what you do as a DJ? A: “It’s now about more creativity. I laugh a lot when a young kid asks me, ‘Why you don’t play on vinyl?’ Vinyl is cool, but heavy and you can’t do one percent that the digital system can do. I love my Pioneer system. I bless them every day.”

Laurent Garnier, Daft Punk, Cerrone, Donna Summer, Rolling Stones, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Gil Scott Heron, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Elvis Presley and Marvin Gaye.” Q: How do you keep up with the latest music trends? A: “I listen to some shows by other DJs I respect on online services, or I go see their sets at nightclubs. I look at the Billboard charts every day. But for me, DJs should play the best music. Don’t be obsessed with the new. The most important thing, it is to believe in what you play and do it with conviction and emotion.”

Q: Who is your favorite musician of all time? A: “My favorite artist is Madonna. She is my inspiration. DJs who make me dance are Bob Sinclar and Dimitri From Paris.” Q: What’s the perfect afternoon at Nikki Beach musically? A: “We as DJs have one aim—to make people happy at all times, whether it’s during lunch, the beach time, the party, the dinner. We have to feel the crowd, and adapt the music all day. When you choose the good track, at the right moment, you make people come together! I want to see guests smiling, dancing and having fun.”

A: “Getting to party every day and meeting different people. Nikki Beach is known for its exquisite taste in music, and I pride myself on spinning the newest, sexiest and most fun music in the world. There’s nothing better than having the crowd vibe to your tunes.”

A: “I listen to a lot of podcasts, Defected Records being one of the best. I get sent a lot of music from various record labels too.”

Q: Who are your favorite musicians? A: “My all-time favorite musicians and artists, in no particular order, are Depeche Mode, Radiohead, The Cure, Miles Davis, Etta James, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dwele, Common, A Tribe Called Quest, Björk, NiN, Bob Marley, Tito Rodriguez, Drake, U2 and Coldplay.” Q: How do you keep up with the latest music trends? You never know what elaborate Champagne deliveries or famous faces will surprise you throughout the day!” Q: Who are your favorite musicians? A: “My favorites are James Brown, Marvin Gaye and Al Green. The soul, funk music I grew up with is still my big passion and I try to reflect this in my sound by producing remixes of soulful tracks and looking for House music with a feel-good, soulful vibe.” Q: How do you keep up with the latest music trends? A: “Keeping one step ahead of the latest musical trends is something I really enjoy! Being sent many promotional tracks and EPs before they are released really helps, but also searching for new tracks on top House music websites such as Beatport and Tracksource and following artists on social media is the best way to achieve this.”

hile Miami is known for its beaches, sunshine, nightlife and celebrity visitors, there is a new city that is emerging—one that is steeped in the arts. Annually, this modern Miami hosts Art Basel, the world’s largest art fair; the Miami International Boat Show; and the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. When these luxury events aren’t in town, Miami boasts an impressive collection of museums, art galleries, music venues and performing arts centers. Cutting-edge neighborhoods like the Design District and Wynwood are leading the way in Miami’s cultural moment. Of course, no trip to Miami would be complete without visiting Miami Beach and its world-famous beaches. This is where all the hip restaurants, nightclubs and lounges are. Take a stroll on the pedestrian-friendly Lincoln Road where boutiques, cafes and gelato shops await. Yes, the sun and sand will always be the number-one attraction in this American Riviera. And that’s a beautiful thing. But when the Bain de Soleil and Prada sunglasses have been put away, there’s so much to explore in this tropical, artsy, design-oriented city.

CONNECTION TO LOCATION I was born and raised in Miami, although I have lived all over the world.

OTHER THAN NIKKI BEACH, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS I love Jugo Fresh for breakfast. Their acai bowls are everything. For lunch, I head to the pool at the St. Regis Bal Harbour. The food is gourmet and the crowd is always chicness galore! And Toni’s Sushi has the most incredible dinner. The fish is very fresh and the crowd is global socialite.

MOST DECADENT BRUNCH Nikki Beach & Zuma’s brunch are amazing! Normally, I hate the concept of a buffet, but these are next level.

LOCAL FOOD Whole fried fish is my new obsession. I am obsessed with the experience, starting with the crunch.

PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE Lyon Freres Petit Marche is an incredible market, and their Illy coffee is a great secret. They are open from 6 a.m. to midnight, so for that quick rush, this is the spot! I also love taking a coffee at Cafe Nikki.

BEST NIGHTCLUB The Basement at the Edition is my heaven. On Wednesday nights the hip-hop is next level and the dance floor makes you feel there are no limits in life.

POTENT COCKTAIL Grappa is the most potent cocktail. A limited dose sends you to a different stratosphere.

HANGOVER CURE Charcoal drink from Jugo Fresh, called the Limonada Negra. It sucks the toxins right out of you.

DON’T FORGET TO PACK An Eres swimsuit. The fabrics are everlasting and they fit conveniently into your suitcase.

WORTHWHILE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE The De La Cruz Collection is my favorite private art collection in the world. I could easily move in and stay for the rest of my life.

ST. BARTH C onsidered the jewel of the Caribbean, St. Barth is an island oasis renowned for its white

sandy beaches, mountainous terrain, beautiful women, delightful cuisine, high-end shopping, famous faces and French charm. This tiny island (just eight square miles) is a haven for celebrities who need no last names—Beyoncé, Brad, Leonardo, Paris, Mariah, Fergie, Martha and Diddy. Whether you are sunbathing, shopping or supping, it’s hard not to encounter a movie star or musician—day or night. Thankfully, everyone in St. Barth is having too much fun to pay attention to box-office records and top-ten charts. Time slows down in St. Barth with leisurely lunches (freshly caught lobster is popular), picturesque hikes, beach hopping (there are 14 to choose from), shopping excursions, gourmet dinners and a sexy nightlife scene. Plus, copious amounts of rosé. And despite its Cavalli, Cartier and Louis Vuitton reputation, St. Barth is delightfully laidback and user-friendly. You can drive from anywhere on the island within 20 minutes, and everyone speaks English.

OTHER THAN NIKKI BEACH, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS For breakfast, I like Hotel Cheval Blanc St. Barth Isle de France and Hotel Guanahani. They both offer a buffet with healthy products, French pastries, fresh fruit, homemade muffins and juices. The perfect start to the day. For lunch, I recommend Le Grain de Sel, close to Saline Beach. The food is prepared with Caribbean savoir-faire. And for dinner, I suggest Bonito. This restaurant welcomes you in an elegant and comfortable villa, with an outstanding view of the harbor and Gustavia. Book your reservation a few days before as it is always busy. Come early and sit at the bar with a cocktail and tasting of ceviches and tiraditos. My favorite dishes are the Chilean sea bass and the pork confit.

LOCAL FOOD Freshly caught local Mahi-Mahi and grilled lobster.

PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE Bar de L’Oubli, the red bar in Gustavia.

BEST NIGHTCLUB Modjo. It has a fun atmosphere, and they play great classic music. Go there after dinner.

POTENT COCKTAIL On the Rocks at the top of the Hotel Eden Rock.

HANGOVER CURE Drink plenty of water! And then swim in the turquoise Caribbean Sea.

BEST SPA The Spa Guerlain at the Hotel Cheval Blanc St Barth Isle de France is amazing. I also like the Spa Sisley at the Hotel Christopher, which has a beautiful sea view and soothing treatments.

BEST MASSAGE The St. Barth Solar Escape, which was especially created for the Spa Guerlain. It’s pure relaxation.

FAVORITE FESTIVAL The St. Barth Music Festival in January. The Carnival in February. The St. Barth Bucket Regatta in March. Les Voiles de St. Barth in April. And, of course, NYE at Nikki Beach!

SOUVENIR YOU MUST BRING HOME The natural body care range from Ligne St. Barth, and a local vanilla rum.

FAVORITE SHOPPING DISTRICT In St. Jean, you will find shops that offer a selection of clothes and accessories typical of island style. I like Terra, Rose Indie, Bamboo and Pain de Sucre. In Gustavia, you have all the famous brands like Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Vanita Rose. There are also jewelry stores such as Bijoux de la Mer and Les Artisans, where you will find some beautiful treasures.

BEST ACTIVITY FOR SPORTY TYPES Snorkeling, paddleboarding, kite surfing and running.

SECRET ONLY THE LOCALS KNOW A treasure was hidden at Gouverneur Beach a long time ago. Nobody has ever found it.

MOST INSTAGRAMMED LOCATION By the road above the airport, there is a spot where you can take a picture when a plane is landing. You will have the impression that the plane can touch you!

DUBAI Discover The World’s Most Luxurious City

E

ve r y t h i n g i s more extravagant, overthe-top and sparkly in Dubai. Not only does the world’s tallest building—the Burj Khalifa—dominate Dubai’s skyline, but there’s also an indoor ski resort, with 5 different slopes, located within the Mall of the Emirates. Yes, skiing and shopping within meters from each other is a reality in modern day Dubai, as well as a wide variety of watersports on the shores of the Persian Gulf. There are manmade islands—one in the shape of a palm tree, the most opulent hotels with 7star amenities, epicurean restaurants from the top toques and over 70 shopping malls. Dubai is a stylish, sophisticated and cutting-edge city with its high-tech skyscrapers and awe-inspiring dancing water fountains. There’s also old world charm with desert excursions, wildlife encounters and handcrafted jewels at the Gold Souk. Culturally, Dubai is known for its annual film festival, emerging arts district and international concert lineup. We would call Dubai the city of the future, except it is very much of the moment.

OTHER THAN NIKKI BEACH, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS I am a sushi addict so Dubai—with its large variety of Japanese restaurants—is almost like paradise to me. I really enjoy Sushi Art for a casual lunch, and Le Petit Maison for a more refined dining experience.

MOST DECADENT BRUNCH The brunch choice in this city is tremendous. But if you are after something different, and appreciate the concept of entertainment dining rather than just boring eating, then the Nikki Beach Resort & Spa brunch is a MUST!

PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE Baker & Spice downtown. They have the best croissants on earth. Plus, all of their products are made in-house with fresh and organic ingredients!

CHARMING HOTEL One & Only Royal Mirage on the Palm. It’s a good offering for a romantic getaway in a luxury setting. Additionally, Nikki Beach Resort & Spa offers the unique experience of a beachside property with private villas.

BEST NIGHTCLUB I am not really a big clubber myself. I prefer more vibrant restaurants, which transition from dinner and fine dining into a lounge/dance venue seamlessly after Midnight. Coya Dubai is always a great idea! But for club lovers, the choice in the city is huge.

DON’T FORGET TO PACK Forget everything! Come with an empty suitcase and enjoy the vast variety of shopping that Dubai offers.

BEST SPA I recommend trying the smaller salons. The majority of them have big comfortable chairs, and you can have your nails/feet/eyebrows done at the same time by three beauticians. I like Tips & Toes, which has locations all over Dubai.

BEST HAIR SALON Jacques La Coupe in Dubai Marina is great.

FAVORITE DAY TRIP Take a trip down to the desert with one of the luxury safaris. It’s an unforgettable experience.

35

WORTHWHILE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE Check out Alserkal Avenue, the new, hip arts district located in an industrial compound of warehouses. It’s full of lively galleries showcasing both well-known and emerging artists’ creative work. The ambiance is so boho chic and cool!

FAVORITE FESTIVAL Dubai Film Festival!

SOUVENIR YOU MUST BRING HOME Other than a nice pair of designer shoes, I think a cool souvenir is a custom made necklace that spells your name in Arabic. You can make these in the Dubai Mall.

FAVORITE SHOPPING DISTRICT Mall of the Emirates is my favorite. However, the smaller malls have some unique boutiques, such as the Sunset Mall.

BEST YOGA Try the Lifestyle Company. They have classes all over the city, and also offer private and luxury retreats for yoga lovers.

BEST ACTIVITY FOR SPORTY TYPES The world’s first and unique indoor ski resort in the Mall of the Emirates is definitely a one of a kind of experience—and a great photo opportunity for your social media account, too.

SECRET ONLY THE LOCALS KNOW The best parties and events don’t necessarily happen over the weekend.

MOST INSTAGRAMMED LOCATION The Dubai Mall, because of its close vicinity to Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Fountain and the Old Town.

TIPS TO NAVIGATING THE AIRPORT If you are a frequent visitor, apply for the e-gate card, which will ease your arrival/departure greatly.

NEW THIS SEASON Nikki Beach!

FAVORITE BEACH Although located in Abu Dhabi, and over an hour drive away, I love the natural scenery of Saadyat Beach. It has an extremely relaxed setting, so it is the perfect location to unwind from the city.

TOURIST SITE YOU CAN’T MISS The Dubai Fountain show is a must. Find a comfortable spot on one of the surrounding restaurant terraces and enjoy the breathtaking water shows daily. My favorite spot to watch the show is from the Mango Tree restaurant.

TOURIST SITE TO AVOID Dubai Marina during rush hour, otherwise you might end up being stuck in traffic for hours—unless you go by metro, tram or foot.

Nikki Beach has arrived in Dubai! And we are bringing our signature restaurants to the Middle East, along with several new dining concepts. Nikki Beach Dubai Resort & Spa is located on Pearl

and four restaurants. With so many components in

Jumeira, which is a completely manmade peninsula

play, we will be opening each venue over the 2016

on the Arabian Gulf. Our property spans 52,000

season.

square meters and includes the Resort, Beach Club

First to debut is our popular Beach Club & Restaurant with classic Nikki Beach dishes like the Luscious Salad, Chicken Satay, Rotisserie Chicken and Sushi Boats. With seating for over 500 customers around the pool and beach area, this two-story, stylish spot caters to a diverse group of diners. For Dubai, we’ve incorporated international dishes like Vegetarian Farrotto, with leek puree and young vegetables; Grilled Lamb Pita Pocket with ground lamb, pickled vegetable slaw and minted pomegranate labneh dip; and Whole Fresh Fish. The showstopper is the Arabic Mixed Grill, which features marinated spiced lamb kofta, lamb chops, chicken kofta, chicken drumsticks, grilled beef tenderloin, charred onions, tomato relish and pickled vegetables.

DINE at nikki beach dubai

Next, we are launching the very dynamic Satine by Nikki Beach – Restaurant & Lounge, which is situated on the second floor of the Beach Club and has wonderful views of the waterfront and the cityscape, including the Burj Khalifa. Focusing on Mediterranean cuisine, Satine is helmed by chef Udo Moreau, whose oeuvre includes working with several Michelin-starred chefs including Joël Robuchon. Expect elegant, but approachable, dishes such as Udo’s playful Lobster “Club” with lush layers of the crustacean, tomatoes and caviar. A signature feature of Satine will be the presentation of a 110-pound wheel of Laguiole cheese at the onset of every meal. Diners can order this famous French cheese to whet their appetites before dinner. Another dramatic element of the dining experience is the tabletops, which will be adorned with black titanium cutlery from Guy Degrenne, black-andwhite plateware and salt shakers from Nikko, black napkins, red napkin rings and glassware from Bormioli. Satine’s décor is contemporary, with a neutral palette comprised of white, beige, brown and grey tones. The restaurant transitions into a lounge later in the evening, with high-energy music and ambiance. Guests can drink featured Tropical Bellinis with fresh muddled fruit, sway to the beats of the top DJs and snack on a late-night menu. An octagonal bar is the centerpiece of the lounge, with a communal table turning into a catwalk for fashion shows.

Café Nikki will open with all-day dining after this. Café Nikki is an urban bistro, with an emphasis on creative and light fare. The eatery, located in the Resort, will be known for its exceptional breakfast menu, with many healthful options including cage-free eggs, multigrain bread, oatmeal, fresh yogurt, homemade granola and cereal. Lunch and dinner will also be wholesome, with salads, sandwiches and seafood. Guests on-the-go can also take a quick coffee, croissant, pastry or quiche here, too.

Finally, there is Key West, which captures the essence of the resort town on the tip of Florida. Expect the freshest fish and seafood, citrus flavors and tropical dishes when Key West launches. With its modern and serene setting and seafood-inspired menu, Key West will be the perfect venue for our Resort and Beach Club guests who are looking for a taste of America.

koh samui • TRAVEL

K oh Samui is a jewel of an island dotting Thailand. Despite being only a 45-minute flight from bustling Bangkok, Koh Samui is truly

paradise. Imagine liquid-diamond waterfalls and sun-silvered streams; filigree rainforests; banyan trees with banister-sized roots; and pristine pearly-white beaches. The Gulf of Siam ripples from turquoise to tourmaline, its water defying gemologists’ descriptions. While Koh Samui was settled by Malay and Chinese fishermen 1,500 years ago, it remained a well-kept secret until recently. Hippies and backpackers began popularizing this Thai treasure in the ‘70s. Now, cosmopolitan hipsters flock to the island’s posh resorts and restaurants. Much of Koh Samui is developed today, especially along the bustling east coast, yet Thai hospitality and culture remain. Visit the numerous Buddhist temples, or wats, for fascinating insights into local life (always cover up as a sign of respect). Most importantly, though, Koh Samui is a beachcomber’s haven for both vacationers, who enjoy the area’s sexy beach clubs, and surfers, who ride the strong waves.

TIME SPENT IN LOCATION Two years.

OTHER THAN NIKKI BEACH, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS Le Fabrique Samui in Lamai has the best breakfast. Their portions are huge and they offer an omelette wrapped in a crepe. It’s the place I go when I want to order something that sounds classy, but eat like an American. For lunch, visit Big John’s Seafood at Lipa Lovely Resort. The food is fantastic and I like their silverware. Great sunsets, too. And for dinner, I really enjoy Ochos Steakhouse in the Akaryn Hotel. Go for the rib eye steak. They also have Chateaubriand served on a hot lava rock.

MOST DECADENT BRUNCH Hands down, Nikki Beach.

LOCAL FOOD Most people would say Pad Thai, but my favorite authentic Thai dish is Goong Dten, which translates to “dancing shrimp.” It is raw baby shrimp tossed with seasoning, fish sauce, ground roasted dry chili, coriander, onion and lime.

BEST NIGHTCLUB It depends: Any club I end up at with the Nikki Beach crew always turns out to be the best nightclub for that night.

HANGOVER CURE Fresh young coconuts, which are packed with vitamins and potassium. You can pick them right off the trees.

B

ali has exploded in popularity ever since Eat, Pray, Love (the book and movie versions) romanticized the island. In fact, many hotels and tour companies have “Eat Pray Love” packages for the rabid fans who flock here. But Bali is far more than a dreamy cliché from a book. It is a verdant island characterized by majestic volcanoes, hillside temples, ancient palaces, gracious people and beautiful beaches. Stroll through rice paddy fields, which have become tourist attractions. Practice yoga in Ubud, the artsy, spiritual center of the island. Or take in an aquatic adventure such as surfing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, snorkeling, sport fishing, diving, banana boat rides, parasailing and jet skiing. Try out Tai Chi. Or relax over a signature Balinese massage (which can be had for as little as $6 outside the resort areas). There is so much to do in Bali, that many people stay here for months to explore this magical place.

een on the shores of St. Tropez and St. Barth, Vilebrequin is the swimsuit of choice for stylish men all over the world. Vilebrequin, which hearkens back to 1971 in St. Tropez, is one of the most recognized swimwear brands. You can’t miss their vibrant colors, whimsical sea turtles or bold patterns. We’ve long admired their men’s board shorts and resort wear. Great things happen over lunch at Nikki Beach, as was the case last year when Nikki Beach’s Jack and Lucia Penrod dined with Vilebrequin’s CEO, Roland Herlory, and Director of Business Development, Marc Pirinoli. Herlory proposed a partnership between the two brands

tion, which features swim trunks, linen shirts, linen

resulting swim trunks are signed Nikki Beach Vilebrequin, with the aim of giving our guests something original and fun to wear to the beach and pool. The rollout began in our lifestyle boutiques in St. Tropez and Marbella for the summer of 2015. This collection was a resounding success with our customers, and we sold out twice. Next up, the beachwear travels to our lifestyle boutique in St. Barth. And, finally, to all of our Nikki Beach locations across the globe. Nikki Beach will also be exclusively selling Vilebrequin’s MW collec-

“We are proud to be partners with Vilebrequin,” says Chiarastella Simone, Director of Nikki Beach Lifestyle. “Vilebrequin is a brand with quality, history and excellent design. Behind this brand, there is a great family ready to collaborate and respond to our needs. This allows us to give our customers what they deserve, which is the best.” The history of Vilebrequin is quite charming. In the summer of 1971, race car journalist Fred Prysquel fell in love with a woman he saw in St. Tropez. He wanted to impress her on the beach,

and set out to create swim

trunks that would stand out. Inspired by his travels to Africa and the American surf culture, Prysquel designed a swimsuit that not only got him the girl, but spawned a clothing empire. The emphasis on fun, wearable fashion continues forty-plus years later, even while the company was purchased by G-lll in 2012. Vilbrequin’s CEO Roland Herlory has kept Prysquel’s legacy and designs alive. Now let’s hit the beach!

ST. TROPEZ

The sexy seaside town in the South of France

E very summer, celebrities, models and moguls pull up by private jet or mega yacht for a champagne-soaked sojourn, marked by star-studded events and beach club hopping. Put on the map by Bridgette Bardot back in the 1960s, this small village is one of the most exclusive places in the world, symbolized by the maritime action in the harbor, designer shops in town, luxury hotels and elegant air of its visitors and residents. The beaches along the coast lure with crystal blue waters and perfectly sculpted bodies. This is where you will find the many beach clubs, hedonistic destinations where champagne spraying is de rigeur, orchestrated to music playing by world famous DJs. In the evening, the action shifts to the swanky bars and old school nightclubs in town. And, yes, even more Champagne.

Monaco is known as the playground for the rich and famous, with jet setters frequenting the luxurious Le Grand Casino de Monte Carlo for high stakes Baccarat and Black Jack. Formula One race enthusiasts gather here every May for the legendary Monaco Grand Prix with its hairpin turns running through the city and past the Mediterranean Sea. arbella is the ritziest resort of the Costa del Sol, as well as a magnet for golf aficionados. What was once a quiet Andalusian town of orange groves is now a must-stop on the jet set circuit. Don’t miss Puerto Banús, Spain’s version of St. Tropez with its mega yachts, swanky shops, pricey real estate developments and gourmet dining at every turn. Another highlight of Marbella is its natural beaches, and watersports ranging from windsurfing to snorkeling. Golf is probably one of Marbella’s best diversions, and the city boasts the most golf courses per linear kilometer. In fact, Marbella has earned the nickname “Costa del Golf.” For a dose of culture, Malaga is only 45 minutes away. Here you’ll find the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and a museum devoted to his artwork. While nearly every possible type of cuisine is available in Marbella, one of the local specialties is the seafood-laden paella. Chiringuitos (seafront bars) line the promenade and are popular by day. However, the town really comes alive after dark, and bars, pubs and clubs are open all night. Because of this mix of surf, sand and sports,Marbella attracts all types of visitors, from hedonists looking for fun to those who want to improve their golf game.

LOCAL FOOD It’s impossible to just choose one! I can’t live without a refreshing gazpacho in the summer. Or seafood paella, or Serrano ham, or any of our Manchego Cheeses. Spain is the best place to enjoy gourmet food.

PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE At any of the cafes on the well known Orange Square. Better than a coffee, try a hot chocolate together with typical churros malagueños.

BEST NIGHTCLUB A drink in Olivia Valere is always mandatory if you want to feel the heat of Marbella’s jet set nightlife.

POTENT COCKTAIL The Mojito at Nikki Beach Marbella.

HANGOVER CURE One of the healthy, fresh and energetic juices of Terra Sana after an invigorating morning walk.

DON’T FORGET TO PACK Sunscreen, your most chic cocktail dress and a trendy bikini and beach coverup.

MAKING MUSIC IN

The World’s Top Nightlife Destination Is A Haven For DJs

121

ibiza • TRAVEL

F

rom May until October, the world’s hottest DJs descend upon Ibiza for a summer long bacchanal, Spanish style. Indeed, the island is notorious for

being the party capital of the world and for having a happening beach scene. Ibiza also boasts a natural wonderland, a bountiful countryside dotted with groves of almonds, olives and figs. And when named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it wasn’t the night-until-dawn club scene that put the island on the list, but rather its biodiversity and culture. However, most visitors are sleeping during daylight hours, after dancing all night to marathon sets by Tiesto, David Guetta and Calvin Harris. And while you’re on the dancefloor, you might be grinding next to royalty, or stars like P. Diddy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton, Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum. The revelry continues on the island’s extraordinary beaches, where catching rays isn’t the only agenda. Many are a soiree in themselves with rosé-soaked beach clubs. Take to the waves to enjoy many of Ibiza’s watersports, including waterskiing, jet skiing, sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving and parasailing. Inevitably, though, you’ll end up closing one of the nightclubs in full sunshine. You’re on vacation, so party on!

MOST DECADENT BRUNCH: Not because I work here, but to be honest, the brunch at Nikki Beach is amazing. Chefs cook right in front of you and make your pasta live.

P

orto Heli is Greece’s most up-and-coming destination. What was once a sleepy fishing village is being transformed into a chic resort, mainly due to its incredible beauty and proximity to Athens (175 km away). Long a favorite weekend escape for wealthy Athenians, Porto Heli is now being discovered by the jet set, international crowd—including supermodel Bar Rafaeli. This resort town is perfect for aquatic enthusiasts, with activities ranging from waterskiing and sailing to diving and surfing. The beaches are pristine and unspoiled, with clandestine coves just waiting to be explored. Island hopping is a must: Visitors to Porto Heli often take the 20-minute hydrofoil to the nearby island of Spetses, celebrated for its beaches, seafood restaurants, cool bars and medieval architecture. Another island worth seeing is Hydra, where the scenery is unspoiled by cars and motorcycles. People get around via donkeys, water taxis and, of course, walking. SSAKA

TIME SPENT IN LOCATION Over a course of a year leading up to and during the opening of the Nikki Beach Resort and Spa.

OTHER THAN NIKKI BEACH, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS Mourayio, in a fishing village called Ermioni, serves the best breakfast. It’s a small guesthouse with delicious homemade baked pastries and cakes, freshly cut local fruit and beautifully scented coffee. It’s the ideal place to relax, read and tackle the hard task of deciding which site to take in for the day. For lunch, travel to Tarsanas Restaurant on Spetses Island. It’s known for great food, fresh catch of the day and local delicacies with an amazing setting. For dinner, you must eat at Pearl Rooftop Lounge at Nikki Beach Resort & Spa. It commands the best view of Porto Heli and probably the best sunsets in the region too. I love having light snacks and sushi with an amazing mix of drinks. This restaurant is the only place in Porto Heli to serve sushi.

MOST DECADENT BRUNCH Defintely Nikki Beach’s Amazing Sunday Brunch.

LOCAL FOOD Any catch of the day is great as it’s fresh and cooked in a variety of ways to suit the type of fish. A perfect accompaniment is fava (pureed yellow split peas), another local specialty.

PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE Dugas does the best coffee in town and you can take it to go.

BEST NIGHTCLUB Bikini Bar on Spetses Island is a happening, hip place to hang out. It boasts a fashionable location with a fun-loving crowd.

POTENT COCKTAIL Greek Mojito. It’s a mix of Melon liquor, blue curaçao and citrus, coconut and pineapple juices. As a potent kick, bartenders add local Metaxa Brandy. Wow!

HANGOVER CURE I always believe in black aspirin, aka Coca-Cola. But a hearty meal at one of the local tavernas is a very good cure, too.

DON’T FORGET TO PACK Waterproof casing for your valuables. A trip to this part of the world means one thing: You have to go on the high seas and experience yachting.

BEST SPA Amanzoe has a spa that leaves you refreshed and totally relaxed. It’s a true haven for escapism and detoxing with the wide array of journeys and treatments they have to offer.

BEST HAIR SALON Katja’s, based in the local town of Kranidi. She will even come to your hotel.

FAVORITE DAY TRIP A trip to the local island of Hydra. Hydra first became famous in the ‘70s with artists and poets. Today, it houses some quirky hotels and beautiful cafes. And as the island does not have cars, you either travel by foot, donkey or small water taxis.

FAVORITE BEACH The whole region is scattered with beautiful secluded beaches and coves. Some of them are only reachable by boat.

BEST LOCAL ADVENTURE Quad biking on Spetses or horseback riding near Porto Heli. Boating is by far the most popular in the region.

TOURIST SITE YOU CAN’T MISS Epidavros, which is an old Greek city approximately a 45-minute drive from Porto Heli. It has some of the best-preserved Greek ruins in the region. Of course, a stopover in Athens for a few days is worth it to experience the city’s historical sites and museums, especially the Acropolis.

BEST PLACE TO INTERACT WITH ANIMALS On the open sea to watch the dolphins. Early morning is usually the best time for sighting dolphins.

FAVORITE FESTIVAL The Classic Yacht Regatta happens each June in Spetses and is a festival for yachters. It is an amazing display of sail boats and luxury yachts. It kicks off the summer season in the area. This year’s event is June 30 - July 3.

SOUVENIR YOU MUST BRING HOME Locally designed jewelry sold on the island of Spetses is extremely popular and great value for your money.

FAVORITE SHOPPING DISTRICT Spetses and Hydra Island both have great local products from clothing to handicrafts.

BEST ACTIVITY FOR SPORTY TYPES Anything on the water: boating, sailing, wakeboarding or paddle boarding.

SECRET ONLY THE LOCALS KNOW Eat at Douglas’ restaurant in Kilada. This spot only has 15 tables and is full every night. His wife cooks and he serves. You get what is caught daily or bought from the market.

DINE at nikki beach

THE CULINARY SCENE

with Nikki Beach EAt . EVoLVe . EnJOY

What’s cooking at Nikki Beach this winter? Fresh fish, local vegetables, rotisserie chicken. It’s all part of our emphasis on healthful, light and modern cuisine.

BY C H E F B R I A N M O L LOY

Our locations in Miami Beach, St. Barth and Koh Samui embrace this way of eating, with smaller plates, olive oil-based sauces and herbaceous salads. Similarly, Nikki Beach diners are savvy about their health and how that relates to what they are eating. They are more educated and knowledgeable about cooking methodologies, such as sous vide, smoking, canning and pickling—practices we have adopted in our kitchens,

They want to snack, move seats, talk, mingle, drink rosé and enjoy. Subsequently, the Chicken Satay is one of the most popular items to share, as are our sushi boats. This communal eating style turns into a party. Make sure to order a whole fish, which can be salt crusted, grilled or steamed. First, we present the whole fish in its natural state. The customer picks it out and pays by the kilo (or pound). Next, the cooked fish is brought to the table and deboned. It’s good for two or four people, depending on the size of the fish.

DESIGNING nikki beach

A huge part of the Nikki Beach experience is its flowing, all white chic design. This cozy and deceivingly simple décor is marked by elements spanning teepees, oversized wood day beds, alligator benches, white curtains, bamboo accents, communal tables and a feeling of nature. Customers feel at home amidst these pieces, whether they are sunbathing, sharing a meal or spraying Champagne at sunset. The Nikki Beach look is so successful that our fans have incorporated it into their personal yachts and homes, including the singer Fergie. The man responsible for this signature aesthetic is none other than Nikki Beach founder and owner Jack Penrod, who started the company in 1998. We sat down and chatted with the visionary about his design inspiration. What was the original inspiration for the décor of Nikki Beach? My daughter Nicole. Everything was designed with her in mind. Soft, friendly, carefree, beautiful and safe. To make the ladies feel comfortable. How did the teepee come about? To me, it is a symbol of living close to the ground and nature. It is a great reminder to stay grounded and respect nature. It conjures up memories of family around a campfire, sharing meals and stories. Celebrating life in a simple but very rewarding way. What are some other important design elements of Nikki Beach? It’s all about keeping the look natural. Nothing synthetic or over the top. When we first started coming up with ideas, I spent a lot of time in Central America with my wife, Lucia, and we went around farms acquiring some of the large wooden tables that are made out of one big piece of solid wood. It was this natural look combined with soft sophistication in all white fabrics and free-flowing white curtains that make the essence of our Nikki Beach design. Basic, simple and with a touch of heaven. Like you are in the clouds. What has surprised you about how customers interact with the various elements found at Nikki Beach? Another important factor in designing Nikki Beach was to make sure we kept the good energy flowing through the space. Nothing should block the flow. My biggest surprise is when I see our customers’ attitude of feeling like they just got home. It’s very rewarding.

subtle. Candles on tables, and we use amber colored lighting because it is very favorable. Everybody looks good with this mood lighting. When you go into a new country, how important is it to mix some of the local elements with the Nikki Beach signature pieces? And how do you achieve this balance? Our Nikki Beach design is never exactly the same, but all of the locations have the elements that we know make our customers feel very comfortable. When we enter new regions, we find that there’s not much we need to change to fit their culture, mainly because we are all about natural and earthy elements and this is found all over the world. Since Nikki Beach has branched out into hotels, how does your design philosophy extend to hotel rooms and common areas? Inside our new hotels we are bringing a more modern design. However, we are still using many natural elements to complement the new look. Natural wood and earthy elements are a must. How has working with architects and designers around the world inspired you? When two people are open-minded and love to learn new things, I feel inspired. I am only working with architects and designers for the Hotel & Resort division, and my biggest challenge is to transfer my vision of Nikki Beach into the hotel expansion. When they get it, it’s an explosion of great ideas and new design concepts. For example, the people in Phuket were so great to work with because we spent time talking about the different elements of Nikki Beach, including kitchen location, flow of service, showcasing the DJ, creating the right space for people who like to be on stage versus the ones who like to be entertained. CAFE NIKKI at nikki beach

NIKKI’S

In December 1997, Jack Penrod launched Café Nikki in the courtyard of his Penrod’s beach club in Miami Beach. It was designed as a beautiful homage to his recently departed daughter Nicole, with a butterfly garden restaurant. Surrounded by trees, flowers and fountains, Café Nikki was a magical spot. The first incarnation was a chic restaurant and lounge, spurred on by the sexiness of the just emerging South Beach scene. Tapas style plates included seared tuna sashimi (quite nouvelle back then), ostrich salad, honey baked brie, smoked duck pizza and fried calamari. Socialites drank chocolate martinis and marveled at the all-white décor. From its debut, celebrities and A-Listers were regular patrons of Café Nikki. Most significantly, this charming al fresco eatery became the impetus for the worldwide brand Nikki Beach, now with 12 locations spanning the globe. Flash forward to 2015. Café Nikki has undergone a modern transformation. Yes, the garden is still here. The butterfly theme remains omnipresent. And the good vibes that surround this spot are strong. But Café Nikki is more progressive these days. With its 2.0 renovation, Café Nikki Miami Beach is a verdant paradise with tropical accents and a noticeably relaxed, almost meditative, atmosphere. There are lush flowers and trees, including a 40-year-old staghorn plant, whose presence under an all-white gazebo appears to be raining greenery. Stunning orchids cling to tree branches, creating colorful accents throughout. Comfortable couches, seating areas and suspended wicker chairs continue the cozy theme, welcoming guests to stay for a while.

CAFE NIKKI

This revamped Café Nikki is leading the way for an even bigger concept. We are rolling out an enhanced version of Café Nikki in Courchevel, France this winter; followed by Dubai, UAE later in 2016. Expect all day dining at these new Café Nikki locations, with a focus on light, fresh and creative global cuisine. Each Café Nikki will be beautifully designed to reflect both the location and our lifestyle philosophy. Café Nikki Courchevel is situated in the exciting Aquamotion complex at the base of Courchevel, which is the top ski resort in France. It’s the perfect place to dine after a long day on the slopes, in an inviting atmosphere with delicious food. The décor is ski lodge chic! Similarly, Café Nikki Dubai will reflect its Middle Eastern location, with signature dishes representative of the region and a modern look and feel. We are so excited about building Café Nikki into an internatio- nal brand, with multiple locations featuring top-notch cuisine and a friendly ambiance.

NIKKI BEACH • charities

By Jacquelynn Powers Maurice

h i l e Nikki Beach is best known for fun in the sun at our properties all over the world, we have a strong philanthropic philosophy, too. Whether it’s raising money and awareness for local charities or assisting in times of natural disaster, Nikki Beach prides itself on these community efforts. Plus, we always have a fabulous time helping others. Nikki Beach’s charitable endeavors happen on many levels. On a global scale, there is Nikki Cares, Nikki Beach Worldwide’s non-profit charity foundation. This is due to the extreme generosity of Nikki Beach Founder and CEO Jack Penrod and his wife, Lucia. A cause near and dear to the Penrod family, and thereby Nikki Cares, is The Heart Fund, an organization devoted to helping children with heart disease. Under the leadership of Dr. David Luu, their goal is to diagnose and prevent heart disease before it is too late. The Heart Fund works in regions such as Haiti, India and Cambodia. For more information on The Heart Fund, please visit www.theheartfund.eu

During the Cannes Film Festival in May 2015, the Penrods hosted the Generous People Gala, benefitting The Heart Fund on behalf of Nikki Cares. A record 5.1 million euros was raised during this glamorous evening, buoyed by the support of celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton, Akon and Victoria’ Secret model Sara Sampaio. This incredible outpouring of financial support will directly fund the screening, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases for children in the world’s poorest countries. Nikki Beach also took part in the second annual Celebrity Fight Night in Florence, Italy in Septemb e r 2 0 1 5 . S h a ro n Stone and Reba McEntire were honored with the Andrea Bocelli Humanitarian Awards onstage during the soiree, which was held in the historical Salone dei Cinquecento at the Palazzo Vecchio. This year’s event raised $12.5 million to benefit The Andrea Bocelli Foundation and The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center. Another example of this benevolence is the ongoing relationship Nikki Beach has forged with The Creative Coalition, the leading non-profit, non-partisan social

and political advocacy organization of the entertainment industry. At the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015, N i k k i B e a c h p r esented The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight I n i t i a t i ve Aw a r d s Gala Dinner, which was attended by Kevin Connolly. We were also involved with this dinner series during the Sundance Film Festival in 2014, with recipients Billy Crudup, Hailee Seinfeld and Jeffrey Tambor. Over the years, Nikki Beach Worldwide has been a fundraising partner with charities spanning The Global Gift Gala, Children For Peace, March of Dimes, PETA and Operation Smile. On a micro level, it’s no surprise that Nikki Beach Miami Beach, our flagship property, has led the way in local giving. This property has worked with organizations such as Easter Seals of South Florida, The Mourning Family Foundation’s H o n ey S h i n e , t h e Fabretto Organization and Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. However, all of our locations support their local community’s causes. These are just a few of the creative ways that Nikki Beach gives back. Globally, we are redefining “social philanthropy.”
